Trump withdraws invite for Canada’s Carney to join ‘Board of Peace’

0

US President Donald Trump has withdrawn an invitation for Canada to join his newly constituted ‘Board of Peace.’

“Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining,” Trump said on Truth Social in a post addressed to Prime Minister Mark Carney, who made headlines this week when he warned of a “rupture” in the US-led global order.

Carney, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Tuesday, warned of the erosion of the rules-based international order traditionally associated with US leadership and urged middle powers to diversify trade and strengthen their resilience.

Following Carney’s speech, Trump took a swipe at the Canadian prime minister on Wednesday when he said Canada should be “grateful” to the US.

Relations between Canada and the US have been strained since Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods and later halted trade talks because of an anti-tariff advertisement aired in the US.

Trump did not give a reason in Thursday evening’s post as to why he had decided to revoke Canada’s offer.

Canada’s Prime Minister had indicated last week he would accept Trump’s invite on principle.

But Ottawa had indicated in recent days that it would not pay the $1bn (£740m) membership fee which Trump has said permanent members will be asked to pay to help fund the board.

Trump’s withdrawal of Canada’s invitation came after Carney appeared to irk Trump with a speech that won a rare standing ovation this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The prime minister urged other “middle powers” to band together in the face of economic coercion by “greater powers”, although he did not mention the US president by name.

A day later, Trump told the gathering in the Swiss Alpine resort that Canada gets many “freebies” from the US and it “should be grateful”.

“Canada lives because of the United States,” Trump said. “Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”

On Thursday, Carney swiped back at Trump as he delivered another speech back on home turf.

Speaking in Quebec, he said: “Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadians.”

Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ was originally thought to be aimed at helping end the two-year war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and overseeing reconstruction.

Some 60 nations have been invited to join the board, and about 35 have already signed up, according to the White House.

Those who have agreed to join so far include Argentina, Belarus, Morocco, Vietnam, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kosovo, Hungary, Egypt, Turkey, Qatar, Jordan, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.

“Canada doesn’t live because of the United States’ -Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rebukes Trump

Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney has pushed back against President Donald Trump’s claim at the World Economic Forum that “Canada lives because of the United States,” firmly rejecting the assertion while still acknowledging the close relationship between the two countries.

“Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian,” Carney said during a national address in Quebec City ahead of the opening of a new legislative session. He described the relationship between Canada and the United States as a “remarkable partnership,” but stressed that Canada’s success is rooted in its own identity, institutions and values.

Trump appeared to respond later on Thursday via his Truth Social platform, announcing that he was withdrawing an invitation for Canada to join the so-called “Board of Peace,” a body he has promoted as a billion-dollar initiative for resolving global conflicts.

A government source said Canada would not pay to be part of the board, although Carney had earlier indicated he would accept an invitation to join.

The exchange highlights growing tensions between the two long-standing allies. Carney’s remarks followed a widely watched speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he received a standing ovation for warning of a “rupture” in the US-led, rules-based global order.

Although Carney did not mention Trump by name, the comments were widely interpreted as a criticism of the US president’s influence on global affairs.

In Davos, Carney said middle powers such as Canada, which had prospered during the era of an “American hegemon,” must recognize that global dynamics have shifted and that “compliance” would no longer protect them from major-power aggression.

Trump reacted sharply during his own appearance at the forum a day later.

“I watched your prime minister yesterday. He wasn’t so grateful,” Trump said.

“Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”

Speaking later to a domestic audience, Carney said Canada should act as a model at a time of what he described as global “democratic decline.”

“Canada can’t solve all the world’s problems, but we can show that another way is possible, that the arc of history isn’t destined to be warped towards authoritarianism and exclusion,” he said.

Despite his criticism of Trump since the US president took office nine months ago, Carney leads a country heavily dependent on trade with the United States, which accounts for more than three-quarters of Canadian exports.

Key sectors such as automobiles, aluminum and steel have been affected by Trump’s global sectoral tariffs, though the impact has been partially softened by the continued application of an existing North American free trade agreement.

Negotiations on revising that deal are expected to begin this year. Trump has repeatedly insisted that the United States does not need access to Canadian products, a position that would have severe consequences for Canada’s economy.

Trump has also repeatedly threatened to annex Canada and recently posted an image on social media showing Canada — along with Greenland and Venezuela — covered by the American flag.

Carney said Canada was under no “illusions” about the fragile state of global relations.

“The world is more divided. Former alliances are being redefined and, in some cases, broken,” he said.

Referring to plans to increase defense spending, Carney added that Canada must “defend our sovereignty (and) secure our borders,” saying the country has a mandate “to be a beacon, an example to a world that’s at sea.”

TOP DRAGGING THE ZAMBIA ARMY INTO POLITICS: DEFENDING THE NATION IS NOT PARTISAN- Dr. Martin Mushumba

STOP DRAGGING THE ZAMBIA ARMY INTO POLITICS: DEFENDING THE NATION IS NOT PARTISAN

By Dr. Martin Mushumba
The recent attempts by some opposition political figures to politicise remarks made by the Zambia Army Commander on illegal mining are misplaced, irresponsible, and dangerous to national cohesion.

At the outset, it must be stated clearly and without ambiguity: the Zambia Army is not a political institution. It is a constitutional organ of the State, established to protect Zambia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security. Under Article 211 of the Constitution of Zambia, the Defence Force exists to:

  • Defend and protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic
  • Assist civil authorities in times of emergency or threat to public security
  • Uphold peace, stability, and national security in accordance with the law

Further, the Defence Act empowers the Zambia Army to act against threats that undermine national security, public order, and strategic national resources, especially where such threats exceed ordinary policing capacity. Illegal mining squarely falls within this category.

Clearly, illegal mining is a security threat, and not a political talking point. Illegal mining is not a harmless informal activity. Globally, it has been a proven catalyst for instability, conflict, and state fragility. History consistently shows that states that hesitate in the face of lawlessness pay a far higher price later.

  • In the Democratic Republic of Congo, illegal mining has financed armed groups and prolonged conflict.
  • In Ghana, it has devastated water bodies and forced military deployment to restore order.
  • In Nigeria, illegal mining has been linked to banditry, arms trafficking, and organised crime.
  • In South Africa, it has evolved into violent criminal syndicates operating beyond civilian control.

These are not distant lessons. They are warnings. With mineral discoveries in areas such as Mufumbwe, Kasempa, Mwinilunga, and Mpika, Zambia faces similar risks if illegal mining is tolerated. Unregulated miners undermine lawful mining, destroy the environment, deprive the State of revenue, and create lawless zones that threaten public safety.

There is no responsible government ignores such developments. Therefore, the Army Commander acted within his mandate when he issued a stern warning to illegal miners. The Army Commander’s remarks were not political statements. They were security warnings issued within the scope of his constitutional responsibility.

When a Defence Commander speaks on threats to national security, he is not campaigning, rather he is discharging duty. To suggest otherwise is either a gross misunderstanding of governance or a deliberate attempt to weaken key state institutions such as the Zambia Army .

It is telling that the loudest critics of the Army’s firm stance are those who show remarkable silence on the damage caused by illegal mining. But who really benefits from politicising illegality? One must ask:

  • Who benefits from disorder?
  • Who gains when mineral resources are looted outside the law?
  • Who profits when enforcement is weakened?
    Certainly not the Zambian people.

Zambia needs organised, regulated, and lawful mining that contributes to national development, job creation, and community wellbeing. Illegal mining, like drug trafficking or smuggling, cannot be handled with leniency once warnings have been issued. The State has an obligation to act. The Zambia Army has a duty to support that action where national security is at stake in order for law, order, and development to prevail.

Dragging the Zambia Army into partisan politics for simply enforcing the law is reckless and undermines national stability. Let the Zambia Army do its job. Defending the country is not politics. Safeguarding mineral wealth is not politics. Protecting citizens from lawlessness is not politics. It is constitutional duty.

IT’S FOOLISHNESS TO SAY I’M NOT ZAMBIAN – ‘SCOTTISH MAN’ GIVEN  LUBINDA

IT’S FOOLISHNESS TO SAY I’M NOT ZAMBIAN – LUBINDA

IT’S so shocking that a person can come and start challenging my citizenship; ni nzelu kupelebela, ni uchisilu (it’s foolishness), charges Given Lubinda.

The PF faction acting president also says whatever is happening to the party is the work of the devil, who does not want light to return to Zambia.

And Lubinda claims that the PF lost the 2021 elections because it was led by an “ignorant fellow” who did not know the party’s constitution, in apparent reference to former Secretary General Davies Mwila.

Meanwhile, Lubinda says the nation will soon be informed of the measures taken against Brian Mundubile for allegedly creating parallel structures.

Speaking on KBN’s Big Debate programme, Wednesday, Lubinda was asked about the various battles facing the party, including its recent expulsion from the Tonse Alliance.

In response, Lubinda insisted that the party was only fighting the devil and confirmed that he remained the Tonse Chairperson.

“We are only fighting one battle, we are fighting the devil. All this, what is happening to the Patriotic Front is the work of the devil, and the devil is so strong that he doesn’t want light to come back into Zambia. We are not fighting individuals, no. We in the Patriotic Front do not have sufficient interest in fighting battles with individuals, so I cannot even refer to names here. I’ll deal with the principles of the matter. When it was announced that the Patriotic Front had been expelled from Tonse, I’m sure your viewers noticed that we did not respond, we remained mute. We then convened a Tonse council of leaders meeting, which I chaired as Chairman of Tonse on the strength of the constitution of Tonse, which provides that the Patriotic Front shall be the anchor party of the alliance,” he said.

“It provides that the president of PF shall be the chairman of Tonse. This is fortified by the fact that when my position as acting chairman was challenged in March last year, president Edgar Chagwa Lungu, in his hospital bed, realised it was unacceptable that I was being ridiculed. He posted on his Facebook page that I left an acting president of the Patriotic Front, and that acting president is the acting chairman of Tonse. He went further to issue a story to one of the popular newspapers in Zambia, and that story was read by everybody. So fortified by that position, I chaired a meeting of the council of leaders”.

Lubinda argued that removing the PF as the anchor party amounted to a “coup”.

“If you are the anchor party and you have 50% membership to the council of leaders and that 50% is not in that meeting, and the Chairman of that Council of Leaders is not in that meeting, and somebody comes and says I have removed the anchor party and I have removed the party that is supposed to provide the chairman, what is that? Isn’t that a coup? So when you ask the question, ‘am I chairman of Tonse?’ Yes, I’m Chairman of Tonse and after the elections in Kasama, the PF and the Tonse will make their announcement on that meeting that was held by our friends,” he said.

Regarding those questioning his power to hire and fire within the party, Lubinda, in apparent reference to Mwila, remarked that the act of going on TV to claim the acting president had no such powers made him realise why the party lost the 2021 elections.

“Those who are saying I have no power [to fire], I heard some man, a person who held a very senior position in the party coming on television saying, ‘he has no power! He has no power!’ Then I started to realise this is why we lost elections in 2021, we were being led by a person who doesn’t even know what is contained in the constitution that he was supposed to have been using to run the party. What a shame! It’s really a shame, I feel sad that I was part and parcel of the team that was being led by such an ignorant fellow. The constitution is clear, if you read Article 61(j), it will explain to you that the president has such power,” he said.

Lubinda added that questioning his nationality to discredit him was “foolishness”. Last month, Mwila said Lubinda was a white man and could not be President of Zambia.

“Now they bring in [issues] saying, ‘he’s white, he’s not Zambian,’ ati nzelu kupelebela bati. What does the constitution say about being a Member of Parliament? Why didn’t they petition my election in 2001, 2006, 2011 [and] 2016? Does the Zambian constitution allow that a foreigner can be a Cabinet Minister? Ni nzelu kupelebela, ni uchibupa, uchisilu, that’s what it is. I’m sorry for using this language, but it’s so shocking that a person can come and start challenging my citizenship,” he said.

When reminded that it was his party members saying that, Lubinda said it would have been forgivable if it came from less informed people.

He said he was a bona fide and proud citizen who is actually a headman.

“And that’s why I’m saying ni uchisuli (it’s foolishness), had it been less informed people, I would have said forgive them for they do not know, but these ones know. Article 100 explains who qualifies to be a president and the constitution itself provides for who is a citizen, the constitution provides. If you read the constitution, it will tell you who is a citizen of Zambia and that is at Article 33. It talks about the categories of citizens. Article 35: a person born in Zambia is a citizen by birth if, at the date of that person’s birth, at least one parent of that person is or was a citizen. And some fellow comes here and says his father is not Zambian so he’s not a citizen, ah ah, muziba chizungu? (Do you know English?) The constitution says if at least one of his parents is a citizen, and they go and start saying, ‘do you know his village?’ Today in Zambia you are even talking about villages? How silly!” Lubinda responded.

“I’m a bona fide and proud citizen of Zambia. I’m actually a headman and my children are actually heirs to the throne of Chief Mushota, where this man who went on television challenging my citizenship is actually a subject. He’s a subject of my children, ask him, he comes from Chief Mushota and he knows that my children, my blood, are the heirs to the throne of Chief Mushota”.

Asked if Mwila was aware of that, Lubinda refused to mention Mwila’s name, adding he did not care about the identity of the person who accused him.

He revealed that the matter was reported to the police by some people who were upset about the racial remarks and he was hoping the police would take action.

“I don’t know who you are talking about, I’m talking about the fellow who came on television. I don’t care who it is but I’m just telling you, I don’t want to mention names. So the truth of the matter is yes, I’m a bona fide citizen and yes, I qualify to hold any office in the land from the lowest to the highest and nobody can challenge me on that. And I would also like to just tell members of the Patriotic Front that this is very cheap politicking, demeaning propaganda, and I would like to ask those who are campaigning, please campaign on facts. Let’s have focused campaigns, let’s have campaigns of sincerity and truth,” he added.

“Demeaning one another is terrible and you know those remarks are actually racial remarks. I heard that some people who were upset by this matter have reported it to the police. This matter has been reported to the police and I’m hoping that the police will do what they are supposed to do”.

Meanwhile, on suggestions that every party presidential aspirant was creating factions, Lubinda said it was not true as there was only one case which was subject to disciplinary measures.

“Talking about factions, I have not heard that Makebi Zulu has a team in Lusaka Province that is calling itself the ‘Makebi Zulu team’, MZ8. I don’t think you have heard of people calling themselves GL8, Monde 8, GM8, Kambwili 8, Miles Sampa 8, no. So it is not correct and I don’t think it will be fair for me to sit here and not clarify when you say every presidential candidate has a faction, because I’m not aware of any such thing. I have seen on social media, I have read on social media some people talking about one particular person saying this person is an institution unto themselves and that this person is recruiting 72 members in every province at provincial level, and these 72 members are members of that person’s campaign team,” he said.

“72 members at district level, some people have raised an eyebrow and have said this is dangerous. It was brought to my attention as president and my immediate reaction was, ‘read the constitution.’ I have power according to the constitution to take disciplinary action against any erring member. However, that will only be when I see it fit. If it is others who see that somebody has breached the provision of the constitution, they go to the Secretary General and the Secretary General generates disciplinary measures. So to be fair to the majority of those who have expressed interest, I have not heard of anyone creating factions except the one case which I won’t want to delve into because that is already a matter which is subject to disciplinary measures”.

Further, Lubinda said the due process of the constitution was in effect regarding the matter and the measures that would be taken against the person.

“And I don’t think it will be fair for me to be talking about one individual on a television like this without giving them an opportunity to come and defend themselves on this same television programme. All I can say is that the due process of the constitution is taking effect and soon, very soon, the country will be informed about the measures that are being taken against the person who is alleged to be creating parallel structures and is therefore one who can qualify to be said to be creating a faction,” said Lubinda.

MOST MPS WILL LOSE THEIR SEATS THIS YEAR – ANTONIO

MOST MPS WILL LOSE THEIR SEATS THIS YEAR – ANTONIO

DEMOCRATIC Progressive Party (DPP) leader Antonio Mwanza says there will be serious casualties in the 2026 elections, as most MPs will not retain their seats.

In an interview, Wednesday, Mwanza said the majority of MPs had failed to deliver to the expectations of the people.

“Even if we increase the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), if you look at absorption rates, if you look at the projects that have been done, you find that the majority of current members of parliament have failed to deliver to the expectations of the people. And for the majority of members of parliament today, it will be very difficult for them to win elections in 2026. But also, it’s because, to some extent, what has contributed is the mismatch between what a member of parliament is expected to do, and what actually his job is. A member of parliament’s primary job is to pass legislation,” he said.

“Issues of development come in by a member of parliament doing the following things. Number one, holding the Executive accountable in the manner in which the national cake is being distributed. Number two, holding the Executive accountable in the manner in which government resources are used in terms of transparency and accountability. And three, ensuring that the national cake is equitably distributed.

And four, highlighting areas in these constituencies where the Central government must come in and help. The anchor of development, to build schools and hospitals in theory, is the member of parliament’s job. In theory. But in practice, central government handles issues to do with roads and hospitals. If you look at our Constitution, you’ll find that in theory, on paper, it is the job of the local government. But in practice, those are jobs for the central government. Members of parliament have found themselves in a dilemma”.

Mwanza said Zambians had a phobia for a third term, whether at the presidential or parliamentary level.

“Historically, Zambians have a phobia for a third term, whether at the presidential level or parliamentary level. When somebody is trying to go for a third term, it becomes very problematic. And we have seen this not only in politics, we have seen it even in sport.

We have seen it in labour unions, that Zambians have a phobia against a third term. They believe strongly, and rightly so, that if somebody does two terms, that should be enough. If you look at most members of parliament who have managed to go beyond two terms, the majority of those members of parliament are coming from rural constituencies,” Mwanza said.

“In urban constituencies, it has been very difficult for most members of parliament to go beyond two terms. It has been very difficult. With a few exceptions, for instance, Honourable Given Lubinda. But in the majority of urban areas, it’s one term, and if you manage to go for a second term, it means that you have really done an exceptional job. Why? It’s because, generally, most members of parliament have failed to deliver to the expectations of the people. These members of parliament we have in that Parliament, the majority of them have failed to deliver to the expectations of the people”.

Mwanza appealed to MPs to stop campaigning on the basis of infrastructure development, stating that it was the local and central government’s role.

“When they are campaigning, they are telling people that ‘I will build the school, I will build the hospital, I will build the road, I will build this.’ But when they go to Parliament, they find that it is the responsibility of the Central government. And if they don’t find a way to work in collaboration with the Central government, they find it difficult to deliver on the very things they promised the people. Those aspiring for parliamentary seats should stop telling people that they’ll build hospitals or build schools, because that is not their job,” he said.

“They should stop campaigning on the basis of infrastructure development that is in the hands of the local government and the central government. Because it’s a job where CDF is local government; it’s not for the members of parliament. It’s the local government which has decided how these things must be done. Central government is the one providing health and education. Those massive infrastructure projects are for the central government”.

He added that very few MPs who have served for a second term would go back to their constituencies to show what they have done.

“Members of parliament campaign on bringing these developments, but in reality, they find that they don’t have the mandate. They fail to deliver, because what they are promising the people to do, in theory, is in practice the mandate of the local government and central government. Those who aspire to be members of parliament must be telling the people that their role is legislation.

The Constitution is very clear, it defines the role of a member of parliament as legislation. After five years, they find themselves unable to do the things they told people they would do. So, for those who have done two terms, very few will go back to their constituencies and show people what they have done. There will be serious casualties in this election of 2026, as most of those members of parliament in the current Parliament will not come back,” said Mwanza.

WORK TOGETHER, MUNIR TELLS MAKEBI AND MUNDUBILE….as he warns the opposition against costly political ego

WORK TOGETHER, MUNIR TELLS MAKEBI AND MUNDUBILE
….as he warns the opposition against costly political ego

Incarcerated former Lumezi Member of Parliament Munir Zulu has warned that political ego and disunity within the opposition could once again hand victory to the ruling party, drawing parallels with Zambia’s 2001 General Election.

Mr. Zulu recalled that former politicians Ben Mwila and General Godfrey Miyanda lost an opportunity to defeat the MMD because they chose to contest separately, arguing that their decision “left voters spread among them, handing Levy Mwanawasa an easy chance to win.”

He said history was now at risk of repeating itself.

He observed that the current opposition landscape was “mainly driven by ego and self-centeredness,” stressing that regime change could only be achieved if opposition leaders put aside personal ambitions and worked together.

According to Mr. Zulu, “these people who think they can face the enemy single-handedly and win are dreaming.”

Mr. Zulu further cautioned that unchecked ambition had consequences, stating that while some opposition figures were currently visiting colleagues in prison, “tomorrow, when their egos are allowed to play, we in these walls of confinement will be the ones visiting them.”

Turning to the Patriotic Front (PF), Mr. Zulu said it was no secret that the party had clear frontrunners, mentioning Makebi Zulu and Brian Mundubile.

He questioned whether either could win alone, asking, “if Makebi Zulu and Brian Mundubile all go it alone, will they individually win elections?”

He argued that a united ticket, with one serving as President and the other as running mate, would significantly boost the party’s chances.

Quoting Ecclesiastes 9:11, Mr. Zulu said timing and opportunity mattered more than speed or strength, adding that “time and chance seem to favor two individuals now.”

He urged other aspirants to consider yielding in the interest of unity.

Meanwhile, Mr. Zulu asserted that unless opposition leaders were willing to pursue a necessary fusion within the PF, they risked enabling the ruling party to “easily win the 2026 General Elections,” warning that there was “no other way out” if victory was the genuine objective.

VICTORY IN CHAWAMA PARLIAMENTARY BY ELECTION GAVE US LEAKAGE ON HOW TO WIN THE GENERAL ELECTION IN AUGUST – LUBINDA

VICTORY IN CHAWAMA PARLIAMENTARY BY ELECTION GAVE US LEAKAGE ON HOW TO WIN THE GENERAL ELECTION IN AUGUST – LUBINDA

OPPOSITION Patriotic Front Acting President, Given Lubinda, says he is optimistic that a united opposition will be achieved ahead of the August 2026 general elections.

Mr. Lubinda believes that the most feasible way to defeat the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), is through a united opposition force.

Speaking on Christian Voice’s Chatback programme in Lusaka today, Mr. Lubinda said a united opposition would involve fielding a common candidate at presidential, parliamentary, and ward levels.

“The Chawama parliamentary by-election victory has given the opposition a clear lesson on what needs to be done in 2026,” said Mr. Lubinda.

He noted that a divided opposition stands slim chances of winning the 2026 general elections.

Meanwhile, Mr. Lubinda said the purpose of forming a united opposition is not only to unseat the UPND, but also to correct what he described as falsehoods allegedly told to Zambians during the 2021 general elections.

PF acts against those forming parallel structures directs party structures to ignore activities of the illegal Tonse Alliance faction with a purported ECL movement.

This according to directives written to party structures by Acting Deputy Secretary General, Celestine Mukandila.

The illegal Tonse Alliance faction claims it has expelled the Patriotic Front led by Hon Given Lubinda and will hold a process that will pick its leader on 30th January 2026.

The Patriotic Front has warned that anyone participating in such illegal process should consider themselves expelled.

CHISHALA KATEKA DEMANDS APOLOGY OVER ARMY COMMANDER’S REMARKS

CHISHALA KATEKA DEMANDS APOLOGY OVER ARMY COMMANDER’S REMARKS

By Nelson Zulu

Opposition New Heritage Party President Chishala Kateka has demanded a formal apology from both government and Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele following remarks in which he threatened illegal miners.

Speaking when she featured on the Friday edition of “Let the People Talk” on Phoenix FM, Ms. Kateka described the language used by the army commander as dehumanizing and inappropriate, arguing that miners should not be spoken of in terms suggesting they could be eradicated.

She stressed that while illegal mining must be addressed, any response should respect human life and remain within the scope of civilian law enforcement, rather than involving the military.

Ms. Kateka further called on government to clarify whether the directive for any potential military deployment to mining areas originated from the head of state.

Meanwhile, the opposition leader also criticized government’s handling of President Hakainde Hichilema’s leave in Choma, describing the secrecy surrounding his whereabouts and the unspecified duration of his leave as appalling.

She has called for clearer communication regarding the president’s activities while away, stating that as a national figure, citizens have a right to be informed in order to avoid speculation.

THERE IS NO ROOM FOR RIGGING – SIAMUNENE

THERE IS NO ROOM FOR RIGGING – SIAMUNENE

FORMER Defence minister Richwell Siamunene says there is no way the United Party for National Development (UPND) will rig the upcoming August 13 elections.

In an interview with The Mast, Siamunene, the New Focus Party (NFP) leader, said it would be difficult for the UPND to rig the August election in their favour as all loopholes would be sealed.

He said as a former defence minister, he knew the system well and understood all the lacunae in the system, and that he would make sure that they were sealed so that people could not rig the election.

“As you are aware, I was once the defence minister, I know the tricks people use in the system, but I must assure you that we are going to seal all the loopholes, making it difficult for people to rig,” he said.

Siamunene said that they were going to be very vigilant and that they would do anything to stop irregularities, even if they used tricks like rigging underwater,” he said.

He said Zambians were vigilant and would not let anyone manipulate the election results once they made up their minds.

And Siamunene urged the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to restore the broken trust between the institution and the people of Zambia.

He said the commission needed to respect the wishes of the people by not manipulating the results.

“What I can tell you is that not even ECZ can stop the wish of the Zambian people, and they should just do the right things,” he said.

Siamunene said the current government should emulate the two late presidents who freely handed over power after the people of Zambia decided otherwise.

He said the late president Edgar Lungu, whom he described as his close friend, wanted to finish his term but handed over power after the people of Zambia voted him out.

“Former president Lungu wanted to rule a bit longer, but the people decided otherwise; therefore, he respected their wishes, the current government should do the same,” he said.

Siamunene said he had confidence that the UPND would respect the rule of law and would not use underhanded methods to maintain power.

WISHING PRESIDENT HICHILEMA ILL HEALTH UN ZAMBIAN AND A TABOO

WISHING PRESIDENT HICHILEMA ILL HEALTH UN ZAMBIAN AND A TABOO

It’s unfortunate that the opposition have clearly abandoned their critical role of providing credible checks and balances to government, in preference to grandstanding and wishing President Hakainde Hichilema ill health.

The opposition’s malicious and inhumane gesture to perpetually wish the Head of State ill health should be condemned in the strongest terms by all patriotic Zambians, as it’s not only unacceptable and un-Zambian but also a taboo in an African society.

It’s indeed for this reason, the opposition whose alliances are crumbling should focus their attention on selling their manifesto if at all they have any, to the electorate as this is an election year instead of peddling falsehoods on the health of the Republican President  in an effort to gain cheap political mileage.

In fact, President Hakainde Hichilema is well and performing his duties diligently, contrary to assertions by prophets of doom that he is unwell when in fact not.

We can’t overturn Chawama results, just seek legal redress, ECZ advises Muunda

We can’t overturn Chawama results, just seek legal redress, ECZ advises Muunda

By Shadreck Jere

THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has advised United Party for National Development (UPND) Chawama losing candidate Morgan Muunda to seek legal redress through the courts if he is dissatisfied with the outcome of the recently held Chawama parliamentary by-election.

ECZ says the commission has no legal authority to overturn election results once they have been officially declared, noting that any disputes arising from an election must be resolved using established legal channels.

Muunda lost the Chawama by-election to Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) candidate Bright Nundwe.

In a recent interview with News, ECZ spokesperson Patricia Luhanga said the commission conducted the by-election in line with the law and existing electoral procedures, adding that the role of ECZ ends once results are announced.

“Once election results are declared, the Electoral Commission cannot reverse or alter them.

Any aggrieved candidate is advised to seek redress through the courts as provided for by the law,” Luhanga said.

She explained that the electoral process provides room for candidates or political parties to challenge results they believe were affected by irregularities, but such matters fall under the jurisdiction of the judiciary and not the commission.

Muunda has publicly claimed that the election was not free and fair, arguing that some of his supporters were allegedly prevented from voting at one polling station during the by-election.

However, ECZ maintained that all polling stations that were scheduled to open did so, and that voting was conducted according to electoral guidelines.

The Chawama by-election was held following the nullification of the parliamentary seat, attracting several political parties and independent candidates.

Bright Nundwe of the FDD emerged winner after securing the highest number of votes, while Muunda came second.

PRESIDENT MAHAMA SIGNS EV DEALS – GHANA WILL BUILD CARS, NOT JUST BUY THEM

🌍🔥 PRESIDENT MAHAMA SIGNS EV DEALS – GHANA WILL BUILD CARS, NOT JUST BUY THEM 🇬🇭⚡🚗

Stop scrolling. This is the future of Africa happening RIGHT NOW in Ghana.

For decades, African countries only bought cars made outside the continent. President John Dramani Mahama just changed that forever.

Ghana has signed multiple China-backed electric vehicle agreements to build EV assembly plants inside the country. This is not just talk – land has already been acquired and development is far advanced .

THE DEALS:

⚡ Ghana’s Ministry of Trade signed an MoU with Shenzhen New Jekyll of China to establish an EV assembly plant

⚡PKA Export and Import (Ghanaian company) signed an MoU with Chinese companies Polyrocks and Sinovcle to establish an EV assembly plant in Accra

⚡Zonda Tec Ghana Limited is establishing a cutting-edge assembly plant dedicated to electric vehicles

THE NUMBERS:

➡️ Construction begins before the end of 2025, with initial production target of 5,000 vehicles annually, scaling to 20,000 units

➡️ Over 1,000 direct jobs and 2,000 indirect jobs will be created

➡️ Ghana positioning itself as West Africa’s electric mobility hub

WHAT THIS MEANS:

✅ Jobs for ordinary Ghanaians  factory jobs, technical work, and training opportunities

✅ Ghana spends LESS money importing fuel and used cars

✅ Cleaner transport = cleaner air and healthier cities

✅ Value created at HOME, not sent abroad

✅ Ghana will EXPORT electric vehicles to neighboring West African countries

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed both parties agreed to establish an electric car manufacturing plant anchored on Ghana’s strategic lithium deposits  meaning Ghana will use its OWN resources to build its OWN cars!

THE HONEST TRUTH:

➡️ Why should Africa only CONSUME what it cannot PRODUCE?

➡️ Why should our youth remain idle when skills can be built locally?

➡️ Why should the future always arrive late to our continent?

President Mahama is answering these questions with ACTION, not words.

While other African leaders talk about development, Ghana is BUILDING factories. While others import everything, Ghana is MANUFACTURING. While others wait for the future, Ghana is CREATING it.

This is not a small step  this is a DIRECTION CHANGE for West Africa. Ghana is showing the continent what happens when leadership meets vision.

My Twin Sister Was Born at Nine Months, I Was Born at 13 Months — Prophet DM Siame

My Twin Sister Was Born at Nine Months, I Was Born at 13 Months — Prophet DM Siame

By Muzamba Siandizya

On the Kenny T 1-on-1 Podcast, Prophet DM Siame casually dropped one of the most unexpected stories ever and the internet is still trying to process it.

He revealed that he has a twin sister. At first, everything sounded normal. Then he dropped the part that changed everything.

His twin sister was born at nine months, like most babies and he was born at thirteen months, from the same mother and the same pregnancy.

At this point, science quietly excused itself, leaving everyone with questions. Honestly, this is where Dr Mujajati should have been summoned to the chat, because biology was clearly under pressure.

As Prophet Siame told the story
and confidently, reactions ranged from pure shock to amusement. One thing was certain, this was not a story you hear every day.

If you haven’t watched this episode of the Kenny T 1-on-1 Podcast, you’re missing out. Rush and watch it, because hearing this story directly hits very differently.

Trust us, you don’t want to be told about this one. You need to hear it yourself.

Trump Calls Ethiopia’s Nile Dam a “Big Problem,” Vows to Mediate Dispute

Trump Calls Ethiopia’s Nile Dam a “Big Problem,” Vows to Mediate Dispute

U.S. President Donald Trump has described Ethiopia’s $5-billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as “a big problem,” pledging to help resolve the long-running dispute between Ethiopia 🇪🇹 and Egypt 🇪🇬 over the project.

Speaking after talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump said the dam “blocks water” from flowing to neighboring countries, raising concerns about its impact on downstream nations, especially Egypt.

The GERD, which was commissioned in September, is Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam and a key development project for Ethiopia.

However, Egypt has long argued that the dam threatens its water security, as the Nile is its main source of freshwater.

The dam dispute remains one of the most sensitive geopolitical issues in Northeast Africa, with negotiations between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan repeatedly stalling over the years.

U.S. SENATOR OFFICIALLY CALLS FOR PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP’S REMOVAL FROM OFFICE UNDER THE 25TH AMENDMENT OVER GREENLAND CONTROVERSY

🇿🇦 SOUTH AFRICA WATCHES CLOSELY AS U.S. SENATOR OFFICIALLY CALLS FOR PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP’S REMOVAL FROM OFFICE UNDER THE 25TH AMENDMENT OVER GREENLAND CONTROVERSY — WHAT IS HAPPENING, WHY IT IS POSSIBLE, AND WHO COULD SUPPORT IT

Democratic Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts has formally called for President Donald Trump to be removed from office using the 25th Amendment of the United States Constitution, citing what he describes as dangerous and unstable behaviour linked to Trump’s recent statements and actions regarding Greenland and global security.

The controversy erupted after Trump reportedly made remarks suggesting that the United States should take control of Greenland, linking the issue to global power competition with Russia and China, and even tying it to his personal frustrations over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. These comments alarmed U.S. lawmakers, European leaders, and constitutional experts, who say such statements risk destabilising international relations and NATO alliances.

What is the 25th Amendment and why is it being mentioned?

The 25th Amendment allows for the removal of a sitting U.S. president if they are deemed unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office.
Under Section 4 of the Amendment:

The Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet can declare the President unfit.

Power is then transferred to the Vice President.

If the President challenges the decision, Congress must vote.

A two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate is required to permanently remove the President.

This mechanism has never been fully used to remove a president, making Markey’s call extremely serious and unprecedented.

Who is supporting this move?

Several senior Democrats have backed Markey’s position, arguing that Trump’s recent behaviour shows:

Poor judgment in foreign policy.

Reckless handling of sensitive global security matters.

A pattern of impulsive decision-making that could endanger U.S. allies.

Some members of Congress say impeachment remains an option, but the 25th Amendment is specifically designed for situations where a president’s mental or emotional fitness is in question.

Why this matters to South Africa and the world

Greenland is strategically important for global security, Arctic shipping routes, and military positioning. Any attempt by the U.S. to assert control would:

Strain relations with Denmark and the European Union.

Disrupt NATO unity.

Shift global power balances involving Russia and China.

For South Africa and other African nations, instability in U.S. leadership affects:

Global markets.

Diplomatic relations.

International peace and security structures such as the UN and G20, where South Africa plays a role.

Can Trump actually be removed this way?

It would require:

His own Vice President to turn against him.

A majority of his Cabinet to agree.

A massive bipartisan vote in Congress.

While politically difficult, the fact that senior U.S. lawmakers are openly discussing it shows the level of concern about the President’s conduct and its impact on global stability.

“GOVERNMENT IN BED WITH CRIME?”
Malema Blasts ANC Over ‘Shameful’ Ministerial Appointment

“GOVERNMENT IN BED WITH CRIME?”
Malema Blasts ANC Over ‘Shameful’ Ministerial Appointment

EFF leader Julius Malema has unleashed a scathing attack on the ANC, accusing it of sacrificing integrity for power after the appointment of Gayton Mackenzie as a cabinet minister.

Malema says the ruling party should be “deeply ashamed,” claiming it was prepared to “go to bed with criminals” simply to keep government running. In a fiery warning, he argued that cabinet appointments are not just political deals but mirrors of the values a nation chooses to tolerate.

“Ministers are a reflection of the society we are,” Malema said, insisting that leadership should be built on principle, credibility and moral authority not convenience.

The remarks have reignited debate over ethical leadership and standards in South Africa’s coalition-era politics, where unlikely alliances are becoming the norm. Critics say the appointment sends the wrong message to citizens already frustrated by corruption and poor governance.

As political tensions rise, Malema’s message is blunt: when standards fall at the top, the whole country pays the price.

BOTSWANA’S DIAMOND STOCKPILE HITS 12 MILLION AS GLOBAL SLUMP DEEPENS

BOTSWANA’S DIAMOND STOCKPILE HITS 12 MILLION AS GLOBAL SLUMP DEEPENS

Botswana’s diamond reserves have swollen to about 12 million carats, almost double the government’s target inventory, as global demand slumps and rough prices remain weak.

The diamond stockpile reached 12 million carats by December 2025, representing an 85% overage above the government’s established ceiling of 6.5 million carats. According to Mining Weekly, this stockpile growth has persisted despite ongoing efforts to reduce production levels.

The economy is forecast to shrink again after ongoing soft demand forced Debswana to halt production at some mines.

Mineral export revenue is projected far below historical averages.  Higher tariffs in key markets like the U.S. and India could further depress prices and squeeze profit margins, underscoring the urgency of economic diversification.

Nigerian lady accuses streamer IShowSpeed’s security of s3xual assault after forcing her way through a crowd

A Nigerian woman has accused members popular American streamer IShowSpeed’s security team of sexual assault during his ongoing tour in Lagos.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, amid chaotic crowds surrounding the content creator.

Speed was celebrating his 21st birthday and marking his YouTube channel surpassing 50 million subscribers while streaming in Nigeria.

According to viral videos circulating on social media, the woman aggressively pushed through the dense crowd to confront IShowSpeed, challenging him to a foot race.

IShowSpeed accepted and easily won the impromptu contest. Following her loss, the woman turned confrontational

She directly accused the streamer’s security personnel—reportedly including Ghanaian and Nigerian guards assault.

She alleged that they inappropriately touched or groped her (specifically her breasts) while they managed the crowd and restrained fans to protect the streamer.

In one clip, she approached IShowSpeed again, pointing at his security team and making the allegation.

When questioned by the streamer (“Who?”), her response appeared inconsistent or unclear in available footage.

Bobi Wine Banned From Contesting Future Elections- Ugandan President’s Son Who Is Defence Chief Says

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has issued a controversial directive banning opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, from further participation in Uganda’s electoral process, citing national security concerns.

Kainerugaba, who is also the eldest son of President Yoweri Museveni, made the declaration in a public statement attributed to him, asserting his authority as head of the armed forces.

Whether Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu is in the country or not I, as CDF, in the interests of national security and for the good of the commonwealth ban him from any further participation in the electoral exercises of Uganda,” he said on Thursday.

In the same statement, the army chief extended the directive beyond Bobi Wine himself, warning of consequences for individuals who publicly align with the opposition leader.

“From now on ANYONE who declares Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine as his/her political leader must be annulled.”

Kainerugaba further emphasized the binding nature of his directive, grounding it in his interpretation of executive authority.

“My orders stand with the force of the Commander-in-Chief of the State.”

The remarks have sparked widespread debate and concern among political observers, civil society groups, and opposition supporters, particularly over their implications for constitutional order, democratic participation, and the separation of military and civilian authority in Uganda.

Bobi Wine, a former presidential candidate and leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has long been a vocal critic of President Museveni’s government and has previously accused security agencies of harassment, arbitrary arrests, and suppression of opposition activities.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Electoral Commission of Uganda, the presidency, or Bobi Wine regarding the CDF’s pronouncement.

The statement adds to ongoing tensions in Uganda’s political landscape ahead of future electoral activities, with critics questioning the legal basis and constitutional limits of military involvement in electoral matters.

Muhoozi Kainerugaba currently serves as Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and is a central figure in the country’s political and security discourse.

This development comes after Kainerugaba, openly stated that 22 members of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) were killed during the conduct of the country’s general elections.

He further suggested that opposition leader Bobi Wine was the intended next target, describing him as the “twenty-third” person.

Muhoozi, who is also Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, made the remarks on social media.

“We have killed 22 NUP terrorists since last week. I’m praying the 23rd is Kabobi,” he wrote on his official X handle.

His comments amount to an open confirmation of the killing of opposition party members and come amid controversy surrounding the re-election of his 81-year-old father, President Museveni.

Museveni was declared winner of the disputed polls, securing a seventh term in office.

On Tuesday, Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine alleged that more than 100 of his supporters have been killed in recent days amid escalating political violence, accusing President Yoweri Museveni’s son and the military of carrying out deadly repression.

In a post on X on Monday, the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader said the killings had intensified over the past week, contradicting official figures he said were being publicly cited.

“Last night as Museveni’s son was making these threats to kill me and gloating over killing 22 of our supporters (in reality, he has killed over 100 since last week), the military who are stationed inside our compound yet again banged my house doors as they sang profanities, ordering the occupants to come out of the house if they’re men,” he posted on Tuesday .

Bobi Wine’s claim marks one of his strongest accusations yet, alleging a sharp rise in fatalities linked to security operations targeting opposition supporters. He did not provide names or locations of those allegedly killed but said the violence had coincided with increased military activity around his residence.

He further alleged that soldiers stationed at his home engaged in disorderly conduct and intimidation, raising concerns about the safety of those inside.

“The people at my home say the criminals seemed to be drunk.”

According to the opposition leader, the situation has left his family and associates trapped and vulnerable, with access to food deliberately blocked by security operatives. He said the military had taken control of his compound, replacing gate padlocks with chains.

“We demand that the military vacate our home immediately. My wife and people are not safe. They’re starving after these criminals blocked food from reaching them. They cut the padlocks of our gates and replaced them with chains. FREE UGANDA NOW.”

RUSSIA, UKRAINE AND US TO HOLD TRILATERAL TALKS IN ABU DHABI

RUSSIA, UKRAINE AND US TO HOLD TRILATERAL TALKS IN ABU DHABI

RUSSIAN, Ukrainian and US negotiators will hold talks in the United Arab Emirates on Friday, in what officials say is the first meeting attended by all three countries since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion nearly four years ago.

The Kremlin confirmed Russian officials would attend the talks following a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and US envoys in Moscow.

Russia described those talks as “useful in every respect”, but said a long-term peace deal could not be reached until territorial issues had been resolved.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised European allies for a lack of “political will” in taking action against Russia.

Present at the Thursday night meeting with Putin and two other Russian aides were three US representatives, including Steve Witkoff, and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the talks were “substantive, constructive and very frank”, but reiterated that any agreement for durable peace would not be possible without resolving territorial issues.

“Until this is achieved, Russia will continue to consistently pursue the objectives of the special military operation,” he said.

Ushakov added that Putin emphasised Russia was “sincerely interested” in a diplomatic solution.

“Without resolving the territorial issue according to the formula agreed upon in Anchorage, there is no hope of achieving a long-term settlement,” he said, a reference to the summit between Trump and Putin in Alaska last year.

Witkoff last year said that Russia had agreed to allow the US and Europe to give Ukraine “robust” security guarantees as part of a potential peace deal.

After meeting with Trump in Davos, Zelensky also made clear that the future status of territory in eastern Ukraine remained an unsolved issue ahead of talks in Abu Dhabi.

“It’s all about the land. This is the issue which is not solved yet,” Zelensky told reporters in Davos, adding that “the Russians have to be ready for compromises, not only Ukraine”.

The territorial sticking points include Russia’s demand that Ukraine give up the 25% of the Donetsk region that Kyiv still controls.

Zelensky joked in Davos that he hoped the UAE knew about the planned meeting on Friday, but in a measure of the seriousness of the talks he named some of his most senior officials as part of the Ukrainian negotiating team.

The head of the country’s national security and defence council, Rustem Umerov, was already talking to US officials in Davos, along with Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Zelensky’s office, and negotiator David Arakhamia. They will be joined in the UAE by the chief of the general staff, Andrii Hnatov.

On the Russian side, the delegation in Abu Dhabi will be led by General Igor Kostyukov, director of Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency, while investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev will meet with Witkoff separately to discuss economic issues.

Zelensky said last month that a 20-point US plan to end the war was 90% ready and that Ukraine’s position on Donbas, in eastern Ukraine, was different to Russia’s.

He has offered to withdraw troops by up to 40km (25 miles) from the region in order to create an economic zone in Donbas, if Russia does the same.

The US proposal for Ukraine’s industrial heartland in Donbas is for a demilitarised and free economic zone in exchange for security guarantees for Kyiv.

Zelensky also told reporters in Davos that he had reached an agreement with Trump on future US security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a deal.

He gave no details but said it would need to go before the US Congress and Ukrainian parliament before signing.

Zelensky had initially called off his trip to Davos in order to deal with the aftermath of Russian strikes on Kyiv’s power infrastructure, which have left large areas of the capital without heating, water or power during the harshest winter so far in almost four years of Russia’s full-scale war.

Another sticking point Zelensky has is future control of Ukraine’s enormous Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, seized by Russia in March 2022.

UGANDAN MP AND BOBI WINE ALLY ARRESTED OVER ELECTION VIOLENCE

UGANDAN MP AND BOBI WINE ALLY ARRESTED OVER ELECTION VIOLENCE

UGANDAN police have detained a lawmaker, and close ally of opposition leader Bobi Wine, for his alleged role in election-related violence last week.

Muwanga Kivumbi, a deputy leader of Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP), is accused of organising attacks on a police station and a vote-tallying centre after their electoral loss, which the party denies.

The police have said that seven people were killed in the incident, but the politician has given a different account, saying that 10 people were killed at his home as they waited for parliamentary election results.

The Uganda Police Force said in a post on X on Thursday that Kivumbi would be “arraigned before court in due course”.

“His arrest is in connection with recent incidents of political violence,” it added.

Kivumbi’s arrest follows tensions after last week’s elections in which President Yoweri Museveni was re-elected for a seventh term.

During his victory speech over the weekend, Museveni warned opposition figures including Kivumbi of coordinated plans to attack polling stations.

He said seven people were shot dead by police after groups of alleged opposition supporters, armed with machetes, attempted to carry out violent attacks in Butambala district outside the capital, Kampala.

Wine, Museveni’s closest challenger and who is in hiding after fleeing a raid on his house after the elections, has denounced the results as “fake”, citing electoral fraud.

He has also alleged that there was “silent massacre” under way and a crackdown targeting political activists.

On Tuesday, he posted on social media that more than 100 people had been killed in election violence, without stating evidence.

This came after Uganda’s army chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also Museveni’s son and his potential successor, said the security forces had killed 22 opposition supporters during poll-related violence.

Since the election, Ugandan authorities have reportedly arrested dozens of youths on various charges linked to election-related incidents in Kampala.

Museveni first came to power as a rebel leader in 1986. He will have served for 45 years when the next term ends in 2031.

Uganda has not witnessed a peaceful transfer of presidential power since independence.

From Labs to Leadership, When World Rulers Hold PhDs

“DOCTORATES OF POWER!”
From Labs to Leadership, When World Rulers Hold PhDs

Behind the suits, speeches and summits, some of the world’s most powerful leaders carry something else: doctorate degrees.

From China’s Xi Jinping, trained in law, to Germany’s Angela Merkel, who earned a PhD in quantum chemistry, these leaders arrived in office with academic firepower. Economics dominates the list, with figures such as Vladimir Putin, Manmohan Singh, Mario Draghi, Pedro Sánchez and Ernesto Zedillo all shaped by doctoral-level economic thinking.

Others followed more unusual paths. Nigeria’s Goodluck Jonathan studied zoology, Japan’s Yukio Hatoyama trained as an engineer, while Boutros Boutros-Ghali specialised in international law before leading on the global stage. Law, history, political science and management also feature prominently.

Spanning past and present, the list shows that power does not always rise from the battlefield or the boardroom sometimes it comes from lecture halls, libraries and laboratories.

But as history reminds us, a PhD may sharpen the mind it does not automatically guarantee good leadership. In politics, ideas meet reality fast.

‘This tour isn’t sbout influencers’: iShowSpeed hits back at critics over Africa Tour

iShowSpeed has fired back at critics accusing him of being disrespectful for failing to collaborate with fellow content creators during his Africa tour — insisting the trip was never about influencer link-ups.

The 21-year-old streamer said the purpose of his visit to Nigeria and other African countries is to showcase real African culture, not to organise streamer collaborations or boost already-established creators.

Speed explained that every stop on the tour is carefully pre-planned and tightly scheduled by his team, with limited time allocated to specific locations in each country.

According to the YouTube star, the focus has been on highlighting ordinary people rarely seen online — from street performers with raw talent to local communities whose stories don’t usually reach a global audience.

He pushed back at complaints from influencers who felt overlooked, pointing out that many of them already have platforms and visibility of their own.

“This tour is about giving exposure to people who don’t have one,” Speed said, adding that he will not cancel cultural visits or moments arranged by locals just to accommodate influencers.

He stressed that the goal of the tour is to put African culture on display for the world, not to centre the experience around content creators.

“This isn’t a streamer tour,” he made clear. “It’s about Africa.”

Julius Malema Arrives in Court as Supporters Gather in Large Numbers, Heavy Police Presence Deployed

BREAKING NEWS: EFF Leader Julius Malema Arrives in Court as Supporters Gather in Large Numbers, Heavy Police Presence Deployed, and South Africans Await a Ruling That Could Shape the Country’s Political Climate

EFF leader Julius Malema has arrived at court this morning, where he is expected to appear before the magistrate in a case that has attracted national and international attention. The proceedings will determine whether the matter is postponed, dismissed, or moved forward to a full trial, and whether any conditions will be imposed on him going forward.

After court, Malema is expected to address the media and his supporters, outlining the EFF’s position and what the party plans to do next. Senior EFF leaders and legal representatives are also expected to give briefings, while the court may announce the next date or key legal steps in the process.

Outside the courthouse, the atmosphere is tense but energetic. Red berets and EFF regalia are visible, with supporters singing struggle songs, chanting Malema’s name, and calling for what they describe as “political justice.” Some members of the public are showing solidarity, while others are watching closely, concerned about possible unrest depending on the outcome.

Police and security services are on high alert, monitoring the situation to prevent any clashes and to ensure the court proceedings are not disrupted. Many South Africans are following developments closely, aware that whatever happens today could have political, social, and security implications in the days ahead.

MPs ARE LAWMAKERS, NOT CONTRACTORS – Antonio Mwanza

MPs ARE LAWMAKERS, NOT CONTRACTORS – MWANZA

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Antonio Mourinho Mwanza has cautioned Zambian voters against judging parliamentary candidates by handouts and social events, arguing that such practices have distorted the true role of Members of Parliament (MPs).

Speaking in a public statement, Mr. Mwanza observed that many aspiring MPs were now being assessed on their ability to host football tournaments, buy alcohol, distribute T-shirts, or offer small favors.

He said these actions might attract votes but had nothing to do with constitutional leadership.

According to him, the trend had created unrealistic expectations among citizens and weakened accountability.

He explained that, under Articles 62 and 63 of the 2016 Zambian Constitution, the core responsibilities of MPs were law-making, representation, oversight of government, and approval of the national budget.

Mr. Mwanza stressed that Parliament held legislative authority, stating that “the legislative authority of the Republic is vested in and exercised by Parliament.”

He emphasized that nowhere in the Constitution were MPs mandated to build roads, schools, hospitals, or bridges.

Mr. Mwanza further noted that many candidates continued to campaign on infrastructure promises because such pledges were emotionally appealing and visible to voters.

However, he said MPs neither controlled construction budgets nor signed contracts, warning that this often resulted in unfulfilled promises and misplaced public anger.

He remarked that “MPs do not control budgets for construction and they do not run ministries or councils.”

Clarifying roles, he explained that local councils were responsible for community infrastructure such as local roads, markets, and sanitation, while central government ministries handled national roads, hospitals, schools, and major projects.

MPs, he said, could only advocate and lobby on behalf of their constituencies.

As he put it, “MPs can influence and advocate, but they do not implement development projects.”

Mr. Mwanza also highlighted that MPs who were constantly in conflict with central government often struggled to attract development, as projects could be delayed and funding withheld.

He argued that effective development depended on cooperation between MPs, councils, and government institutions.

“Members of Parliament are lawmakers and representatives, not contractors or builders,” stated Mr. Mwanza, while urging voters to focus on a candidate’s ability to represent them in Parliament rather than on material inducements during campaigns.

Opposition Shifts Tone, Questions President’s Prolonged Stay Away From Lusaka

🇿🇲 BRIEFING | Opposition Shifts Tone, Questions President’s Prolonged Stay Away From Lusaka

Opposition criticism of President Hakainde Hichilema has shifted from health speculation to questions about governance and presence, with independent Nkana Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu openly challenging the President’s continued stay away from Lusaka.

In a strongly worded Facebook statement, Mpundu dismissed earlier claims that the Head of State was unwell, acknowledging that those rumours had been disproved. He instead argued that the issue had now become one of accountability and constitutional practice.

“The President is perfectly fine. We have all seen that. Those who said otherwise have been proved wrong,” Mpundu said. “But you cannot keep a President at a farm for one month. That is where the problem is.”

Mpundu questioned why the President had not formally announced leave if he was away from routine public duties, noting that previous presidents had publicly declared leave and allowed the Vice President to act in line with the Constitution.

“How can a President be away on leave for one month and not announce it,” he asked. “If he is on leave, why not let the Vice President take over as prescribed by law.”

The Nkana lawmaker also linked the concern to earlier controversies around President Hichilema’s decision to reside at his private Community House rather than State House, arguing that the latest situation had amplified perceptions of informality in governance.

“We accepted that he chose to stay at Community House instead of State House. But now he must start working from his farm,” Mpundu said.

“This is no longer funny.”

The remarks reflect a broader change in opposition messaging. Where earlier narratives focused on alleged illness, critics are now questioning whether the President can effectively govern while remaining away from Lusaka for extended periods, even as State House maintains that the Head of State can discharge his duties from anywhere within Zambia.

No official statement has been issued detailing the President’s daily work programme or clarifying whether he is on formal leave.

Illegal Mining Deprives the Treasury of Revenue-Dr. Lubinda Habazooka

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba writes;

Illegal Mining Deprives the Treasury of Revenue-Dr. Lubinda Habazooka

My View

Dr. Lubinda Habazooka has condemned illegal miners stating that their activities deprive the Treasury of income in taxes.

I wish he could express similar outrage to a government that gives mine houses tax holidays, tax exemption and especially a government that allows export of copper as ore or as concentrates – duty free.

Exporting copper ore and copper concentrates ( in this case even without export duty) when the country has sufficient processing and smelting caoacity is deliberate theft of fair taxes as products such as gold, silver, and cobalt may not be visible at this strage.

It’s also part of a sophisticated mechanism to distort quarterly and annual eligible income available for taxes.

You expect people like Dr. Habazooka to spend time exposing such tax dodging, and such tax cheating mechanisms so that government can be compelled to act fairly.

Further, in the recent, the armed forces gave been unfairly used to enforce private interests such as we saw in Mumbwa area where the Zambia Airforce was involved in destroying camps of illegal gold miners while accompanied by an investor who claimed he had mineral exploration licence.

following the geo-mapping of the country, the study has revealed where nineral deposits are, and this new assignment is to prepare and empty lands for big businesses interested in exploiting rhe resource especially in light of the prevalent high prices of copper, cobalt and other critical minerals.

I also wish that he could spend time to propose solutions that would help illegal mining to be regularised and monitored especially that it attracts desperate youths who remain unemployed and have little or no support from the State but infact show determination, resilience, sacrifice and hard work in creating self economic opportunities for themselves, instead of affirming brutal methods against our own people.

WEZI KAUNDA DIED IN THE SHADOW OF A THIRD TERM

WEZI KAUNDA DIED IN THE SHADOW OF A THIRD TERM
To understand how Wezi Kaunda died, you must first understand what Frederick Chiluba wanted. Power was no longer enough; permanence was the goal. By the late 1990s, the third-term project was already alive, whispered in corridors, rehearsed in loyalty tests, enforced through fear. The constitution was an obstacle. Dissent was a threat. History itself had become inconvenient.
Kenneth Kaunda was not merely a former president. He was a living rebuke to Chiluba’s ambition. And Wezi Kaunda was the bridge between that past and a future Chiluba could not control.

WEZI KAUNDA WAS NOT JUST A MAN — HE WAS CONTINUITY
Wezi Kaunda carried something no police docket could erase: political inheritance. He was young, disciplined, and increasingly active in UNIP at a time when Chiluba’s government was tightening its grip on institutions. As the third-term debate loomed, figures who could mobilise resistance — especially those bearing historic legitimacy — became intolerable.

A third term does not coexist with strong opposition. It demands obedience or absence.

THE NIGHT HE WAS SHOT WAS NOT CHAOS — IT WAS ORDER
On 3 November 1999, Wezi Kaunda returned home. The gunmen were already there. They did not wander. They did not guess. They waited.

He and his wife, Didre, were driving home to a suburb of Lusaka in his Toyota Landcruiser when they were approached by a group of armed men, at the hate of his house. According to Didre, Kaunda told the gang:

‘I am Major Wezi Kaunda. Please take my car, take whatever you want. I am not resisting. Spare my life and my wife. Just take the car.’

The gang replied: ‘We know who you are. Do you think we don’t know? Shoot him.’

The men ordered Kaunda out of the car and shot him in the stomach, back and shoulder. He was rushed to hospital, where he died a few hours later. The car was found abandoned, but nothing had been stolen.

His wife survived. No valuables were taken. This was not panic. This was not hunger. This was not crime spiralling out of control.

This was selection.

The state later asked the nation to believe that common criminals executed the son of a former president at his gate and forgot to rob him. That explanation collapses under its own absurdity.

THE THIRD TERM CONTEXT MAKES THE LIE UNWORKABLE
By 1999, Chiluba’s third-term ambition was generating resistance within civil society, churches, the legal fraternity, and opposition parties. UNIP, despite years of harassment, still mattered. Kenneth Kaunda still mattered. His voice still carried moral weight.

Wezi Kaunda’s existence guaranteed that his father’s political shadow would not fade. His death removed that guarantee.

When power seeks extension beyond constitutional limits, it does not tolerate symbols. It erases them.

THE STATE’S RESPONSE WAS NOT JUST FAST — IT WAS DEFENSIVE
The police raced to reduce the killing to aggravated robbery. Suspects were paraded. Confessions were announced. Courts convicted. The political temperature was lowered by force of narrative.

There was no appetite for independent inquiry because independence is dangerous when truth is destabilising. The question was never who pulled the trigger. The question was who benefitted from the silence that followed.

The third-term project did not need public controversy. It needed calm. Wezi Kaunda’s death was neutralised as an issue before it could ignite.

CONFESSIONS WERE PRODUCED, BUT CLARITY NEVER WAS
A confession is the easiest thing to manufacture in a frightened system. What was never produced was motive that made sense. Why Wezi? Why his home? Why no theft? Why no political interrogation? Why did Kenneth Kaunda himself reject the robbery explanation?

Those questions were treated as subversive, because during a third-term push, even questions become enemies.

WHAT HIS DEATH ACCOMPLISHED SPEAKS LOUDER THAN ANY VERDICT
After Wezi Kaunda was killed, fear thickened. Opposition energy fractured. The political environment became quieter, more cautious, more obedient. The third-term debate advanced in a country already conditioned to understand the cost of resistance.

That is how power disciplines without issuing orders.

CONCLUSION: THE THIRD TERM CAST A LONG SHADOW

Wezi Kaunda was killed before Chiluba formally launched his third-term bid, but not before the machinery of that ambition was already in motion. His death must be read inside that context, not outside it.

You do not gun down the son of a founding president during a period of constitutional manipulation and call it coincidence. You do not erase political motive when power is overstaying its welcome. You do not silence a future and expect history to forget why.
Wezi Kaunda did not die because Zambia was unsafe.

He died because power wanted no witnesses, no heirs, and no tomorrow it could not control.

What has Kalimanshi done for UPND to buy him 3 cars, wonders Liswaniso

What has Kalimanshi done for UPND to buy him 3 cars, wonders Liswaniso

UPND National Youth Chairperson, Gilbert Liswaniso says the party has not  bought Innocent Kalimanshi any motor vehicle.

Speaking when he appeared on Showstar’s House podcast today, Liswaniso says the former Patriotic Front—PF die hard cadre has done nothing for the party to buy him cars that other party members don’t have.

“What has Kalimanshi done for UPND to buy him 3 cars?” Liswaniso wonders.

He says claims that UPND has bought cars for Kalimanshi—Ama Americans are not true and that it is him who approached the party if he could join after seeing President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership.

He says the party is open to welcome anyone who is willing to work with the UPND government for the betterment of the nation.

“UPND has rehabilitation so if people claim we have allowed a PF  criminal in our party, he will be rehabilitated and become a better citizen,” Liswaniso says.

He says UPND does not buy people, it only mobilises people so that they can join the party.

ECONOMIST WARNS ON RISKS OF FOREIGN BOND INFLOWS

ECONOMIST WARNS ON RISKS OF FOREIGN BOND INFLOWS

Economist Kelvin Chisanga says Zambia’s decision to lift the cap on foreign participation in local-currency bonds is a calculated move aimed at easing short-term liquidity pressures.

Chisanga observed that the policy should not be mistaken for a structural fix to the country’s debt burden, but rather a tactical response to an imminent US$1 billion repayment hurdle.

He nots that the timing of the move is both deliberate and delicate, given Zambia’s limited access to international capital markets post-debt restructuring.

Chisanga explains that the initiative could help broaden the investor base and reduce the government’s dependence on local banks for financing.

He however cautions, that increased foreign participation introduces risks tied to capital-flow volatility and global market sentiment.

Chisanga emphasised that any lapse in fiscal discipline or monetary credibility could trigger sharp reversals in investor confidence.

He remarked that while the policy may ease rollover risks, it does not reduce the country’s overall debt stock.

He pointed out that shifting risk from external borrowing to foreign-held domestic debt could be beneficial if managed prudently.

Chisanga highlighted that the move might also unlock credit for the private sector by reducing government crowding-out.

He stressed the measure will only work if supported by sound monetary policy and disciplined fiscal management throughout the election cycle.

Comparing me to Chile One is unnecessary, I want real competition – Yo Maps

Comparing me to Chile One is unnecessary, I want real competition – Yo Maps

ZAMBIAN music sensation Yo Maps, real name Elton Mulenga has spoken out against comparisons with ‘ Ba Neighbor’ hitmaker Chile One, describing them as unnecessary and lacking significance.

According to Yo Maps, he prefers competition that genuinely pushes him to grow rather than comparisons that add no value.

Appearing on Power TV’s Muchimuzi Top 10, the international artiste said not all rivalries are productive.

“I love competition, I need it but there is a certain competition like right now that I would really need. There is certain competition that I feel is so unnecessary to me,” he said.

“Comparing me to Chile One is unnecessary. It works for him because he is trying to do what I have done before,” he stated.

He also pointed to his accomplishments as one of the biggest artistes the country has, noting that he has performed and filled up some of the country’s largest venues.

“I’ve once filled showgrounds, music clubs multiple times and even heroes stadium. These are milestones other local artistes haven’t reached yet,” he said.

Yo Maps added that while he values real competition, he focuses on challenging himself against top international acts like Stonebwoy, Rema, Diamond Platnumz, and Harmonize rather than engaging in comparisons that add little value.

He further added that competition should be meaningful and must not create unnecessary drama.

Zambia Army Moves on Illegal Mining as Politics, Security & Elections Collide

🇿🇲 EXCLUSIVE | Zambia Army Moves on Illegal Mining as Politics, Security & Elections Collide

The Zambia Army Commander is not touring the Copperbelt for ceremony. Lieutenant General Geoffrey Choongo Zyeele is on the ground, inspecting units, issuing operational direction, and signalling that illegal mining syndicates have entered the Army’s threat matrix. From the Copperbelt, the operation is expected to extend to other regions where intelligence has flagged similar networks.

What the Army is confronting is not artisanal desperation in its innocent form. It is organised, mobile, and in some areas armed. That distinction matters. Speaking Thursday in Ndola, Lt Gen Zyeele was explicit. “All those individuals who threw stones at the Commander in Chief we shall pick them one by one.” He went further.

“Illegal immigrants, some with military backgrounds, are involved. These are our targets. We will flush them out and if necessary lethal force will be applied without hesitation.”

Those words have triggered outrage in opposition circles. Patriots for Economic Progress leader Sean Tembo has demanded the Commander’s dismissal, accusing him of threatening civilians. Socialist Party leader Fred M’membe has amplified the narrative that the Army is being used to intimidate voters ahead of the August elections, particularly on the Copperbelt.

This framing ignores context and history.

Zambia has been here before. During the Mufumbwe gold rush, law enforcement operations recovered firearms from illegal mining sites. Guns did not fall from the sky. They entered through syndicates. At that point, policing alone proved insufficient. Security escalated because the character of the threat had changed. The same pattern was seen during the Mukula crisis when the state deployed military assets after civilian institutions were overwhelmed by criminal networks embedded in politics and commerce.

The Copperbelt unrest last November followed the same script. When President Hakainde Hichilema was stoned in Chingola, it was not an isolated outburst. Security briefings linked the violence to resistance against enforcement measures targeting illegal mining. That incident crossed a line. Attacks on the Head of State are treated in every serious republic as a strategic threat, not crowd control.

Lt Gen Zyeele’s language reflects that shift. He is not speaking as a police commissioner managing protests. He is speaking as a commander responsible for internal stability. His warning that Chingola will not become “a hub for impunity” is directed at organised actors, not subsistence youths selling sweat for survival.

Why now? Why January? Why so close to an election year?

Security operations do not wait for electoral calendars. Intelligence drives timing. Sources within law enforcement confirm that illegal mining syndicates have expanded since late 2024, with tighter coordination, cross border movement, and political protection. Border security was quietly tightened in November for this reason. When syndicates grow, the cost of delay increases.

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia did not collapse overnight. Armed groups began as informal resource networks tolerated for political convenience.

This is the Army’s core argument. Prevent before contain. Neutralise before militarise.

However, opposition resistance is not surprising. Illegal mining remains a fuel artery for political mobilisation. Youths are deployed not only to dig but to stone, chant, and intimidate. When that pipeline is disrupted, political operations feel the pressure. Jerabos are the best example in this case. This explains why figures like Sean Tembo frame the Commander’s remarks as civilian persecution while avoiding the issue of guns, foreigners, and organised crime.

It also explains why the Copperbelt is central. The region is economically strategic and politically volatile. Any perception that enforcement will change economic dynamics becomes weaponised in opposition messaging. Some analysts are already casting the Army operation as an attempt to secure votes for UPND. This argument collapses when examined against facts. Illegal miners do not vote as blocs. Syndicates mobilise chaos, not ballots.

The Army Commander has anchored his stance in constitutional duty. He reminded the public that the Zambia Army has supported civil authority during cholera, Pandemic, and national emergencies. Internal security is not a deviation from mandate. It is embedded in it

This operation is not about politics. It is about who controls territory, resources, and force. When guns appear in mining zones, the issue exits the economic file and enters the national security file. At that point, the language hardens. The posture shifts. The Army steps forward.

The months ahead will test resolve. Illegal mining syndicates will adapt. Political actors will shout persecution. The Army will continue to move.

History shows that states which hesitate at this stage pay later in blood and fragmentation. Zambia’s security leadership appears determined not to repeat that lesson.
