Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s marital woes started during their honeymoon in Italy

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s relationship issues began on their honeymoon in Lake Como, Italy, a source familiar with the situation tells Page Six.

The couple’s honeymoon included numerous public outings packed with PDA and shopping.

However, Ben was reportedly not happy with having the cameras following him.

“He was unhappy with paparazzi following them. She is an international superstar, and he acted like it came as a surprise that they would be followed around,” the source said.

When they weren’t in front of the cameras, “They would barely speak to each other during what was supposed to be the happiest time of their life. He sold her on him being a changed man, and that lasted a very short time,” the source claimed.

Another insider told the publication that Affleck finally came to his senses about their renewed love once his sobriety “started to settle in with normality.”

When they started seeing each other again, “He was just getting sober … He was in a vulnerable state, and whatever their chemistry played into that … He was in this frenzied, excitable state,” the insider said.

Affleck has been open about his struggles with alcohol in the past. He’d reportedly last returned to rehab in 2018.

The whirlwind romance soon wore off once he adjusted to his sober life.

Affleck started craving more privacy, and he could no longer take Lopez’s level of celebrity, according to the insider.

“He doesn’t want [the entourage] and all the drama that comes with that in his home,” the source said.

Meanwhile, sources previously said Ben still considered J.Lo’s feelings as their relationship came to an end in the spring.

Sources described him as “very protective of her,” which fueled his decision to hold off on filing for divorce.

Unfortunately, there was no way of getting around humiliating her.

“She’s furious. He has humiliated her. He was the one who initiated getting back together … She made a big deal that he was the love of her life,” a source previously said.

Lopez filed for divorce on Aug. 20, the second anniversary of their wedding.

Jermaine Jenas addresses his dismissal from BBC over allegations of unsolicited text messages to a female colleague

Former Tottenham footballer, Jermaine Jenas has reacted to his dismissal from the BBC.

The former midfielder was dismissed from his role with Match of The Day and The One Show by the BBC due to allegations of unsolicited text messages being sent to a female member of staff on The One Show.

Speaking to talkSPORT news on Thursday, August 22, Jenas said: “I can’t really talk about it.

“I, as you can probably see, am not happy about it.

“But currently as it stands I’m going to have to let the lawyers deal with it.

“You know, there’s two sides to every story as we know.”So that’s all I can say right now.”

Asked about the allegation itself, Jenas said: “Like I said, I’m not happy about this situation.

“I’m going to be speaking to my lawyers about it is all I can say right now.”

Pressed on whether he could elaborate on what the complaints relate to, whether the complaints involved one person or more, or if he was surprised by the allegations, Jenas stated he was unable to answer currently.

“Like I said, I’m going to speak to my lawyers about this situation,” he said. “I definitely, as you can see by my reaction, I’m not happy at all about the outcome of this.

“But I’ve got to leave it in the hands of the lawyers right now.”

“It’s hard, you know,” he continued. “There’s definitely two sides.”

Asked when he was told by the BBC that he was being sacked, when he knew a complaint had been made, if legal proceedings were underway, or if he owes anyone an apology right now, Jenas declined to comment, once again citing he would respond through his lawyers.

“I can’t talk about that right now. I’ve just got to leave this to my team of lawyers at the minute who are I suppose managing the situation,” he said

“This is tough, you know. But I have to listen to my lawyers.”

Quizzed on whether he sees any reason why he would not be able to continue in the sports presenting industry or in broadcasting, he said: “I can’t talk about that right now.”

Jenas earned 21 England caps during his career and played in the Premier League for Tottenham, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle.

Taylor Swift has reacted to the thwarted terrorist attack that led to the cancellation of her Vienna shows

Taylor Swift has reacted to the thwarted terrorist attack that led to the cancellation of her Eras Tours shows in Vienna.

The mega-pop star addressed the threat of violence on Wednesday, August 21, in her first comments since the scare earlier this month.

She also defended her prolonged silence over the unnerving situation that was uncovered.

“Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows,” she wrote.

“But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives.”

Three teen suspects were arrested for allegedly planning an ISIS-style terror attack at one of Swift’s Austrian concerns that included driving a bomb-filled car into the crowd to kill “as many people as possible.”

Swift said she stayed quiet on the foiled attack because she didn’t want to do more harm than good.

“Let me be very clear: I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows,” the singer said.

“In cases like this one, ‘silence’ is actually showing restraint, and waiting to express yourself at a time when it’s right to.”

She also said she was “heartened” by the way her fans rallied together and noted her team worked with stadium staff and British authorities to keep Swifties safe as her tour continued.

“I decided that all of my energy had to go toward helping to protect the nearly half a million people I had coming to see the shows in London,” Swift also wrote.

The series of Vienna shows were scheduled for Aug. 8- Aug. 10 before the last minute cancellations.

Her last concert of the European tour was on Monday, August 19, at Wembley Stadium in England.

Kenyan police accused of helping suspected serial killer escape

Police were holding Mr Khalusha while still investigating the multiple killings
Five police officers in Kenya have been charged after a suspected serial killer escaped from custody, police have said.
In July police said Collins Jumaisi Khalusha had confessed to the murders of 42 women, including his wife, since 2022.
Mr Khalusha’s lawyer denied the claim, saying his client had been tortured to confess.
He had been held at a police station since being arrested in July, but on Tuesday police said that Mr Khalusha and 12 others escaped after being “aided by insiders”.

An incident report from the station says police discovered the detainees were missing at 05:00 local time (03:00 GMT) on Tuesday, when officers were serving breakfast.
The 13 individuals escaped by cutting through a wire mesh roof and scaling a perimeter wall, the report added.

The 12 individuals who fled alongside Mr Khalusha were Eritrean nationals detained for entering the country illegally, police said.
Eight officers on duty at the time have been suspended, while investigations continued, police added. Five were charged on Wednesday with helping an inmate escape custody.
Mr Khalusha, 33, was detained following the discovery of nine mutilated bodies at an abandoned quarry in the capital, Nairobi.
The victims were aged between 18 and 30 and were all killed in the same way, according to the police.
Their murders sparked shock and outrage. Many questioned how officers failed to detect that bodies were being left in a quarry around 100m (109 yards) from a police station.
They also wondered how 42 people could be murdered in the space of two years without police noticing – and how, after not suspecting anything for so long, officers made an arrest in less than three days after the bodies were discovered in the quarry.
Kenya’s police watchdog also expressed some scepticism. The Independent Police Oversight Authority launched an investigation to establish whether the police themselves were linked to the killings, following “widespread allegations of police involvement in unlawful arrests [and] abductions”.
It has not yet released its findings.
Police in Kenya have been accused of scores of human rights abuses in the past – and the force is currently under investigation over deaths and abductions following recent anti-government protests.

At the time of Mr Khalusha’s arrest, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) chief Mohamed Amin said: “It is crystallising that we are dealing with a serial killer, a psychopathic serial killer who has no respect for human life, who has no respect and dignity.”

Mr Khalusha’s lawyer, John Maina Ndegwa, told the BBC in July: “He says he was strangled to confess. You could tell he was in distress, terrified and in anguish.”

The suspect appeared in a court in Nairobi on Friday, when the magistrate ordered him to be held for a further 30 days so that police could complete their investigations, news agency AFP reported.

The discovery of the dismembered bodies came as the country was still shaken from the so-called Shakahola forest massacre, where more than 400 bodies were found in mass graves near the Indian Ocean coast.

Cult leader Paul Mackenzie had allegedly encouraged his followers to starve themselves in order to “go see Jesus”.
He has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.

Andrew Tate has been placed under house arrest in Romania, as prosecutors investigate new and serious allegations

Andrew Tate has been placed under house arrest in Romania, as prosecutors investigate new and serious allegations involving s£x and trafficking of minors.

The controversial online influencer appeared in court earlier today, August 22, with his brother Tristan, who was also placed under special judicial control.

Andrew Tate placed under house arrest following new allegations of child trafficking

It comes after Tate’s home was raided this week following fresh allegations of human trafficking and s£xual exploitation involving a total of 35 victims, including a woman who was 15 at the time.

In a statement, Romania’s anti-organised crime agency, DIICOT, said six people had been detained in total, both Romanians and foreigners.

The charges included allegations of human trafficking, the trafficking of minors, s£xual intercourse with a minor, influencing statements and money laundering, it said, although the agency did not specify which charges applied to the individual suspects.

As he left the courtroom, Andrew Tate made a furious statement denouncing the case against him as a “stitch-up” and lies.

“This is a set-up. It is absolutely disgusting,” BBC reports. “Thirty of those girls say we have done nothing wrong. Two are the mothers of our children.”

When asked repeatedly by a BBC reporter about the allegations of s£x with a 15-year-old girl, Tate refused to reply.

Tate’s spokesperson Mateea Petrescu said yesterday, August 21, in response to the raids on his home in Bucharest that “although the charges in the search warrant are not yet fully clarified, they include suspicions of human trafficking and money laundering.”

Ms Petrescu did not comment on the allegations involving minors.

The Tate brothers have previously been accused of r@pe and human trafficking, and are awaiting trial in Romania on those charges.

They were previously released from house arrest a year ago and told not to leave Romania.

This week’s charges are separate allegations, and involve grooming “vulnerable” people and forcing them to create online pornography in a variety of locations, DIICOT reports.

As the brothers were taken into police custody on Wednesday night, August 21, Andrew Tate told reporters that prosecutors had gotten “desperate”.

“This file is even more stupid than the first one. Wait till you see. They say I have lover-boyed the mother of my children. And we’ve tricked them into having kids. Unbelievable,” Tate said.

“Wait till you see. Remember the first file and the media wasn’t asking where’s the evidence. This is your chance.”

The “loverboy” method is a technique employed by human traffickers which sees them groom and manipulate their victims by coercing them into romantic relationships. Once emotionally attached, the victim is coerced into exploitation, such as forced prostitution, under the guise of love or a future together.

Tate brothers Andrew, 36, and Tristan, 37, have attracted millions of followers on social media by promoting extreme misogynistic views.

The brothers have previously denied all charges made against them, and Andrew Tate has referred to the case as part of a mainstream “conspiracy” to silence him.

A date for the trial has not yet been set.

Who benefits from Lesotho’s ‘white gold’?

0

The Katse Dam stands at 185m (600 feet) tall and it is Africa’s second-largest curved dam
Here in Lesotho, it is known as white gold – the water which plays such an important role in the country’s economy.

The engineering marvel at the centre of this is incongruous in the country’s highlands – sited among the shepherds in traditional Basotho blankets and mud huts that make up this rural area.

The Katse Dam is a seriously impressive piece of design. Standing at 185m (600 feet) tall, it is Africa’s second-largest curved dam.

Completed in 1996, it forms part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, which was the result of a deal signed between the governments of Lesotho and apartheid South Africa a decade earlier.

The country might be entirely surrounded by its much larger neighbour, but it has something parts of South Africa lack – a regular supply of water.

Due to its unique geography – Lesotho is the only country in the world that lies entirely above 1,000m – the country receives a relatively high amount of precipitation.

That is where Katse comes in.

Water is funnelled out of the dam, entering a series of tunnels, that eventually takes it into the Vaal river system in South Africa. It is Africa’s biggest water transfer scheme.

The government says Lesotho receives $200m (£154m) a year from South Africa for the water – more than double what the country used to get after the agreement was renegotiated earlier this year.

However, despite being water rich, Lesotho remains economically poor. And nowhere is that more apparent than in Ha Ramokoatsi village.

Despite being around just 1km from the dam, its 200 residents still have to rely on a small natural spring, tucked away inside a small cave on the hillside, for their supply of water.

At 10:00 on the day the BBC visits, there is a steady queue of women, holding empty paint buckets to carry the water home.

Some have been here since 03:00. In the queue we meet 50-year-old Manteboheleng Mosiyoa, who arrived five hours ago.

“The water situation here is terrible,” she says, visibly angry.

“Sometimes when it rains, a dead dog can be washed into the spring. We have to just take it out as we need the water, even if it is contaminated.”

She adds that consuming the water has had health consequences, and shows us an itchy rash on her wrist, which health workers say is a result of drinking dirty water.

“We regularly get sick, even small children. They drink this water and they have upset and painful stomachs.

“Sometimes when you come to the water you see little worms, but we still drink the water, because there is no way we can survive without it.”

As we speak the spring runs dry, meaning Ms Mosiyoa is left to scoop out the remaining water from a litter-filled, stagnant pool.

Village officials say that despite a series of promises from politicians – dating back to 2020 – that running water would be installed, they have heard nothing.

Village chief Hlojeng Khethisa shows me written minutes in a notebook from meetings held with the previous government.

“My message to this government is that they should come here and see how we live. We can’t have this beautiful dam built around our village and yet we’re still living in poverty.”

That is not a story that you will hear on the tours of the dam, offered by the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority, which runs the project.

Our guide is eager to tell tourists about the fact that Lesotho generates half its electricity through hydro-power, and the roads that have been built thanks to money earned from the dam.

Katse was the first dam, with a second opening in 2003. A third is set to start operating in 2028, with plans for a total of five dams.

Despite the growth, Minister of Natural Resources Mohlomi Moleko admits that the project has not always been in the interests of the communities that live around it.

“We now have to – as Basotho – refocus. Our main focus going forward is to give water to the Basotho, and second the water transfer.

“We are now looking at the provision of water for locals by 2030. That’s what we’re going to be looking at.” He adds that “he would bet his life” that the roll-out will be completed by then.

The demand for Lesotho’s natural resources is only likely to grow.

Much of Lesotho’s water is diverted to Gauteng province, South Africa’s economic heartland, and home to its biggest city, Johannesburg.

It is the largest city in the world not built on a water source, and the city of gold is getting thirstier.

Taps in the city increasingly run dry due to a combination of crumbling infrastructure, a growing population, and reservoirs emptying out due to climate change.
“Lesotho’s water is very important, as it basically drives part of South Africa’s GDP,” says Professor Anja du Plessis, a water management expert at the University of South Africa.

“Water demand however is not sustainable. Consumers use a lot of water, over 200 litres a day, but 46% of water that goes through the system does not reach the consumer, due to neglected infrastructure. It’s a man-made issue at this point in time.”

A deal has also recently been signed to take Lesotho’s water more than 700km, into Botswana.

None of the economic benefits of this will be much comfort to the residents of Ha Ramokoatsi.

Despite being able to see the Katse dam from the window of her house, Ms Mosiyoa says it has bought nothing positive to her life.

“This dam hasn’t done anything for us. We know nothing of the money Lesotho gets. Nothing has been done for us. We’re really struggling.”

HH MUST RESIGN ON MORAL GROUNDS – CHANDA

… for putting the lives of Zambians at risk through poisonous and contaminated mealie-meal

LUSAKA, THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 2024 (SMART EAGLES)

New Congress Party NCP President Peter Chanda says Republican President Hakainde Hichilema should resign on moral grounds for putting the lives of Zambians at risk through contaminated and poisonous mealie meals.

Speaking when he was featured on Daylight Breakfast Show on KBN TV in Lusaka this morning, Mr. Chanda said that President Hichilema made a careless decision to sell all the maize in the national strategic reserves which could have lasted for three years.

He said when a government makes a careless decision that endangers the lives of citizens, the best is to resign on moral grounds and pave the way for a serious crop of leaders.

Mr. Chanda said never again should Zambians entrust leadership of the country to a businessman whose preoccupation is to cut deals.

” We have a dealer as a President. A careless decision was made to export the maize which the country had. We have never been subjected to such kind of a situation but they made a careless decision to export maize which could have lasted us for three years and now they buying maize from the same countries they sold to at an exorbitant price and now we are having this issue of contaminated and poisonous mealie meal which has claimed over 400 dogs,” Mr. Chanda said.

” When a careless decision is made the best is to resign on moral grounds and pave the way for serious leaders and we are ready to take over as the United Kwacha Alliance UKA. We have one year and six months before parliament is dissolved and never again should Zambians entrust power to a businessman who only knows how to cut deals,” the NCP leader said.

And  Mr. Chanda said President Hichilema promised to run a transparent and accountable government but that it is sad that three years down the line, the good governance that was promised to the Zambian people has been thrown down the drain.

” As the New Congress Party we are disappointed with the manner the new dawn government is handling the governance system of the country,” Mr. Chanda said.

Three years of HH and the UPND government feels like 10 years of pure burning hell- Azwell Banda

Three years of HH and the UPND government feels like 10 years of pure burning hell!

By Azwell Banda,

The majority of Zambians are living in painful slow motion, towards nowhere apart from death.

It is grinding second after second of hunger and excruciating poverty, stretching into long minutes of sheer desperation which extend into long hours of mental stress. It is a moneyless life made very hopeless and dark by long hours of load shedding. For the majority, it is such that what should be a simple journey by road between Ndola and Lusaka requires the efforts to raise money for transport as if one is planning on flying to London: it is extremely expensive. And then, of course, there is no certainty one will arrive alive.

It would make for a very interesting Charles Dickens kind of novel, to record, vividly, the daily lived life of just one child in Zambia classified as a “junkie”, for say, just a week. If our public universities and their social science departments were properly funded and progressively run, it would be extremely interesting to read their research outputs on the impact of hunger on Zambia’s social fabric right now: Zambia has never, ever, been such a hungry country as we are today, thanks be to Hichilema’s economic mismanagement, incompetence and greed for foreign exchange. How many of us, today, are willing to give up a morsel of food so that the children of our neighbours with the undemocratic habit of popping up when we are about to eat, eat something also?

It is only now that Zesco is announcing plans to install diesel power generators in our major hospitals and clinics. Does Hakainde Hichilema and his friends in government care about the impact of erratic, long duration electricity load shedding on the thousands of Zambians countrywide whose health and lives depend on medical conditions which need electricity all the time? Do they know, understand, and feel the terror of death such patients suffer because of the erratic electricity loadshedding? How about a mother with a premature born baby in a rural health facility; does Hichilema and his band of political corrupt incompetents and thieves care about her and feel for her baby?

Hichilema’s government happily ignored and abandoned tonnes of medicines his government expensively imported to rot in a private warehouse, as millions of Zambians who depend on the public health system were given prescriptions in government health facilities, to buy the same drugs rotting in the warehouse. Meanwhile, millions of Zambians looking for work cannot find it; therefore, they have no money. Hakainde and his government have squeezed money out of the Zambian economy partly to cripple the Patriotic Front (PF) by squeezing businesses alleged to be aligned to the PF, and partly to satisfy the International Monetary Fund’s monetary policy prescriptions for Zambia.

Three years of the UPND government and the number of unemployed Zambians has exploded. A ticking time bomb is the explosive youth unemployment crisis, especially in our urban areas. Hichilema and his friends in government, who, when in the opposition promised Zambia’s young people massive quality and well-paying jobs and economic opportunities, today indirectly and directly accuse these desperate young people of being lazy, reliant on government, lacking in entrepreneurial acumen and skills, used to PF easy money and many such degrading moronic insults. And yet when in the opposition Hakainde signed a memorandum with Zambia’s youths, for mass provision of employment if elected into government.

Perhaps, paralysed with political trauma that their supposedly rich millionaire president has abandoned them by dumping all his electoral promises, Zambia’s young people, as unlike Nigerian and Kenyan young citizens, do not know what to do, other than pray and hope that “something will happen”. This political trauma has become a powerful barrier to all the opposition political parties: millions of young Zambians do not trust our politicians anymore. Their minds still saturated with the many lies Hakainde and his friends in the UPND fed them to cause them to vote for them, millions of young Zambians are confused, politically paralysed, and cannot see their way out of their current predicament, by supporting any of our current crop of opposition leaders and their political parties. The bottle, illicit drugs, cheap sex thrills, gambling and violent crimes beckon, for many of them.

It is the tired hopelessness of a father struggling with his heavy feet to walk back home after hustling in town the whole day, hungry, finding nothing, and therefore not looking forward to arrive home to his now hungrier family than when he left them in the morning which best captures the destruction of the place of a man and father in a typical Zambian family: the economic impotency of millions of Zambian males is fertile ground for domestic and gender-based violence. Millions of Zambian men cannot stomach the social and economic disrobement which hunger, unemployment and poverty use to rob them of their patriarchal status and place, in the family. Whenever Hichilema talks about “hard work” and “laziness” he rubs salt into the gaping wounds of such humiliated men.

Three years of Hichilema and the UPND government have exploded corruption in Zambia and imploded the Anti-Corruption Commission. We have become numb to the everyday revelations of massive theft, corruption and fraud in government. No month passes without a major story of massive theft, corruption and fraud in government breaking out, since August 24, 2021, when Hichilema was sworn as Zambia’s 7th Republican President. It is as if the floodgates of massive theft, corruption and fraud in government were flung wide open on the 24th of August, 2021. A thread passes through all the massive theft, corruption and fraud in government and leads straight to Hakainde Hichilema, as a person and as president of Zambia.

None of the promised constitutional, criminal justice, electoral and democratic reforms, serve for those his IMF masters have demanded, have happened. Instead, we have lived through a period of open desecration and violation of our Constitution, criminal rule with naked impunity, political vandalisation of the legislature, judiciary and the executive itself. No government in the post 1991 multiparty democracy era has treated all the opposition with so much open contempt as the UPND and Hichilema has done. They have extended this contempt to the Church, especially the Catholic Church: Batuke Imenda, secretary general of the UPND has called the Most Reverend Bishop Alick Banda “the Lucifer of Zambia”. More than a year now, both Hakainde Hichilema as president of the UPND and Batuke Imenda have not publicly apologised for this singularly offensive and dangerously divisive insult.

Three years down the line, it is now abundantly clear why the majority of Zambians rejected Hichilema and the UPND in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2016: it is almost as if instinctively, intuitively, the majority of Zambians outside the UPND strongholds understood the dangers of a Hakainde and UPND government. In 2021, Hichilema was a beneficiary of the massive electoral backlash against Edgar Chagwa Lungu and his PF: a portion sufficient and necessary to remove the PF from office voted against the PF, in the PF strongholds, to punish the PF, and Hichilema was gifted these votes. Hichilema, therefore, has actually never convincingly won any election, on account of being nationally popular. It is this acute awareness which may cause Hichilema to inflict more constitutional vandalism on Zambia, as he plots to stay in power.

Three years in government and the true colours of Hichilema and his UPND are on full public display. Could some of the massive corruption and illicit transfers of money out of Zambia we are seeing be linked to the Bermuda offshore tax evasion schemes the Panama papers revealed about the behaviour of Hichilema when he was in the opposition? I don’t know. Hichilema’s penchant to profit off the auctioning of Zambia’s wealth is well known. The current flurry of selling state businesses perfectly fits Hichilema’s “dealer” mentality. The nationalisation of the losses of ZAMBEEF by government buying, exorbitantly, an unproductive farm from ZAMBEEF captures very well Hichilema’s cold, greedy, selfish and absolutely insensitive political personality to Zambia’s public welfare. Hichilema is happy to loot pension funds for his fake PPPs and raid Zambia’s government coffers to bail out his friends, but he cannot nationalise the mines and all Zambia’s natural wealth for the benefit of all the people of Zambia.

Of all the presidents Zambia has had, just under three years, Hichilema has already confirmed that he is the worst economic manager, insufferably corrupt, authoritarian, undemocratic, puppet of the West, pathological liar and a danger to our national unity and cohesion, as a 60-year-old republic. His selfish appetite to monopolise government business, raid the treasury and accrue debt are all out in the open. His narcissistic political character makes him impervious to advice and to collegial governance. He has the most chaotic and incompetent mob for a cabinet.

It has fast become clear to millions of Zambians that on 12th August 2021, Zambians unleashed upon themselves a selfish and arrogant political criminal outfit in the UPND and Hichilema, and unless they remove this gang from government, the majority of Zambians must expect to suffer hunger, diseases, unemployment and extreme poverty for many decades to come. The three years of the UPND and Hichilema in government have been pure hell, for the majority of Zambians.

M’MEMBE PUNCHES HOLES IN ‘FREE EDUCATION’

….says there is much propaganda on free education purely for political & electoral purposes

Lusaka… Thursday August 22, 2024

Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M’membe says there is a lot of propaganda on free education purely for political and electoral purposes.

Dr. M’membe says in order to have quality free education, government ought to invest heavily in the education sector.

He wonders how much the current UPND administration is investing in the education sector in order to have quality education.

Dr. M’membe is of the firm belief that in order to achieve quality education through free education, the government should heavily invest in education infrastructure.

The Socialist Party leader further said goverment alone cannot run the education sector as it needs the inputs of other stakeholders such as the church, the international community, the business community, corporate entities and others.

“Look at what we are calling free education here. There has been so much propaganda and you can see it. The way the propaganda is being carried is purely for political purposes and electoral purposes. When you examine that so-called free education, you realize it is not free education at all. Especially for us who have come from free education. We still have many of our young people in secondary schools pay. In boarding schools you pay K1000 per term, that money for a boarding school is too little. And that is for 90 days. If you take K1000 and divide it for 90 days, you realize that it comes to K11.11 per day per child. What can you eat from K11.1 or so,” he questioned.

“And if you divide it by 3 meals, it comes to K3.7 per meal for breakfast, lunch and supper. The government puts in K200 per term per child in these schools. And that K200 caters for maintenance of the schools and a lot of other things. And also it is structured like IMF for conditionalities. That K200 cannot be used to feed the pupils or the learners. So if the headmaster runs out of food, you cannot get part of that money to take to food.”

Dr. M’membe has also downplayed reports that his party will abolish private schools once it forms goverment saying the private schools play a pivotal role in providing education to the learners.

He said currently, private schools are doing so much in helping learners access the much needed education for them to make it in the world.

“If you want a free education, it costs money. You have to put a huge percentage of your budget in that. If you want a free education, you have to invest in developing the quality and the quantities of teachers. It costs money. You have also to invest heavily in infrastructure. Schools need infrastructure. How much is this government spending on developing school infrastructure? Socialization of education means the parents, the communities have to participate in running that education. No one should be left out. The government alone does not have the capacity and the resources to run education on their own. They don’t have the capacity. You need the communities to participate. The business world must participate. Everyone must participate because everyone benefits from education. Whether it’s the church, it benefits from education. It must participate in running education. Whether it’s the traditional authorities, it benefits from education. It must participate in running education,” he added.

“Whether it’s the military, the intelligence, the police and so on, all must participate in running education because everyone benefits in education. Even those who despise education, who don’t like education, they still send their children to schools. They still send their children to schools and they want to send their children to the best schools. Especially when they have a bit more deeper pockets.”

Meanwhile, Dr. M’membe has observed the need to embrace research in entrepreneurship.

He said the country is doing so much in agricultural entrepreneurship but that research should be at the center of all these activities such as rice farming, fish farming and other agricultural ventures.

CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE!!!!

21 August 2024

The New Heritage Party wishes to join all other well meaning and responsible organizations and individuals who have raised the alarm and called upon the UPND government to do the responsible thing and reveal the Mealie meal brands that have so far been found to contain the Aflatoxin that has already been reported to have killed 400 dogs and may claim human life if left unchecked.

We believe that it is the height of irresponsibility bordering on criminality for this HH led UPND government to withhold the identity of the mealie meal brands that have been found by government itself to be poisonous. The correct manner of conduct in such circumstances would have been to immediately identify and announce to the community which brands are affected and ordered an immediate recall of all supplied bags from the retail outlets so that innocent citizens are not further exposed to harm than they already have. This is a matter literally of life and death and we would expect a responsible government, a government that cares more for its own people than profits for it’s business partners and those connected in government to act expeditiously.

The President of the millers Association has informed the nation that the variety that is affected is the popular Roller Meal which is more affordable and therefore, consumed mostly by the poor majority of our people. We believe that there is an insidious coulousness and insipid cynicism in the manner that this UPND government has chosen to handle this very important public health, and public safety emergency.

We note , however, that this carelessness and incompetence is the normal way of governance by the UPND. Unfortunately in this particular instance people’s lives , the lives, especially of poor people, is at stake.

The  New Heritage Party, reiterates and demands that the offending Mealie Meal brands and all those involved with the procurement and distribution of this poisonous substance be identified and prosecuted to the full extent of the law, with full compensation to those citizens affected.

A serious example needs to be made of criminally minded individuals prepared to sacrifice Zambian lives at the altar of ill gotten profits and wealth.
Let us all be clear, the UPND government will be held directly accountable for any ill health or fatalities that would result from this Aflatoxin scandal.

But Tonga musicians have now made it; why are Lozi musicians still cry-baby whining?

By Austin Mbozi

Lozi language speakers must aggressively sing and spread Lozi music so that their language spreads to non-Lozi ethnic regions.

Why are these ‘mbuye’ cousins of nine so cowardly ‘kanshi’? It had to take me a Tonga man whom they say we’re ‘shishita’ (sleepy) to write/allow them to  phone-in to ZNBC/other media English programmes whenever Bemba/Nyanja speakers phone there. This was in my article, ‘Warning to ZNBC’s Margaret Chisulo; stop M’membe’s Post’s ‘‘Bemba national language’’ rhetoric’ (The Mast, June 3 and June 10 2024).  Yet the Bemba/Nyanjas are still phoning-in but the Lozi are seated ‘ndwii’, not phoning.

Tonga is currently the fastest spreading language because its ‘chuundu’ music has entered the Lusaka and Copperbelt urban markets, and beyond. Chuundu music now has bigtime names like Mr  Crown (singer of the global trending ‘don’t go away’),  Kadas, Tiger Tonka, Mapik, Loud Cry (gospel), Mpande, Black Mark (‘ndime chiminya’), Spy Dollar etc. Within Southern Province, Bemba/Nyanja music is losing so much ground that even the traditionally Bemba/Nyanja language singers like General Kanene, Yo Maps etc have joined veterans JK, Angela Nyirenda, Saboi Imbolela etc in code-mixing or co-featuring with Tonga language singers. Kings Malembe Malembe! When will you sing in Tonga to thank me for learning Bemba through my love for your beats?

Until recently, Tonga music was shunned. In 2006,  Post newspaper music columnist Elvis Zuma wondered why Tonga singing musician Mashombe Blue Jeans was dominating Tonga speaking regions but not spreading to non-Tonga ones. I replied in my book, ‘Language Politics in Zambia’ (2018, p 128), by citing how my then musician-student in my course on ethnic unity Saboi Imboela complained that recording studios were reluctant to record Tonga/Lozi music as ‘hard to sell’; but added that she proved them wrong with her Tonga language hit, ‘ngoyu genteleman’. When I wrote-replied to Zuma that Tonga music spread faced hardships because Nyanja/ Bemba speakers disliked the Tonga language itself, he disagreed; arguing that it was the quality of Tonga/Lozi songs that needed improving (The Post, 16 June 2006). I think he felt that the ‘banjo’ instrument of Mashombe and  Green Mamba,  and the ‘ngoma’ drums of Nsabata (President HH’s hero) needed replacing with the kinds of modern equipment used by Tonga singing veteran Smokey Haangala but without losing  that ‘chuundu’ traditional beat. I personally, and many Zambians across ethic groups, love ‘banjo’ music. This is as seen by the popularity of Green Mamba’s hit ‘ikabanjo’ and Chester’s ‘banjo’. Anyway Tonga music has balanced itself along Zuma’s suggestions. And non-Tonga’s now love it.

Here are lessons which Lozis can learn from Tongas in promoting music. First, promoters must help competitors within Western Province. Barotse Band (singers of ‘litilimba’) and of that Rasta who sang ‘kinako’ need competitors. Tonga musicians dominated their region by out-competing each other at annual concerts sponsored by Radio Chikuni of the Catholic Church. Ironically, this same Catholic Church nearly had its Western Province–based Oblate  Radio Liseli kicked out for allegedly promoting Bemba/Nyanja languages. How far is it promoting Lozi music?

Lozi music will not spread outside Western Province if it does not first dominate there. Like Tonga music, all music spreads after dominating their regions. American music first dominated America, South African ‘kwaito’, ‘amapiano’ etc first dominated South Africa and Nigerian ‘Afro-beat’ first dominated Nigeria. Active Lozi language speakers in Zambia alone are 1.8 million (9.1 per cent of Zambia’s population). Then add Lozi ‘hearers’ in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. A musician capturing all these can become rich; then spread himself/herself by getting show invitatations from Lozi speaking communities living in Lusaka, Coppberbet, Southern provinces, abroad etc. His/her Lozi audiences will go with non-Lozi funs. Unfortunately, the few times I visited Western Province nightclubs I found dwellers dancing ‘chikokoshi’ to Lingala/Bemba/Nyanja music. They need not ban Nyanja/Bemba language music as attempted by the Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE) in January 2007.  For a while, president Mobutu Seseseko spread Congolese rhumba by banning foreign music from his Congo DR/Zaire, this cannot work in the modern world because other regions can also ban Lozi music. So, just out-sell non-Lozi music. The Tonga musicians succeeded by first capturing the 3.1 million active Tonga speakers in Zambia (15.6 per cent of Zambia’s population).

Secondly, Lozi musicians must dress up modernly/expensively in their music videos. Have you ever seen a Lingala singing Congolese musician dressed shaggy like my ‘mbuye’ Lozi ‘politician’ Alex Muliokela? People do not like reality. They will associate with musicians who will associate their culture/language with the fantasy of elite appearance, even when that culture’s people are still dominantly backward. May those who live in Southern Province tell us. Does Tiger Tonka, Black Mark or Kadas live as expensively as Chester? They look so expensive on videos! Of course, they are past the level of eating village ‘mabisi’ (sour milk) mixed with ‘magwaza’ (boiled grains) for lunch. But do they really eat like Yo Maps? Whatever the case, their elite dressing helped promote Tonga music. Have you seen videos how kids from wealthy urban families sing those Tonga phases alone with Mr Crown in his live shows? Well, it is because he dresses expensively.

Thirdly, wealthy middle class urban  Lozis must buy/listen to Lozi music. Do you know that that ‘ka’ unique dance of President HH demonstrates Tonga/Ila pride to look like cows? Oh yes! He stoops forward, shaping his arms to look like cow horns! Angela Nyirenda told me she sang in Tonga because Tonga elites dominate Tonga music in their cars. It was no surprise that at Nsabata’s (Austin Mwiinga’s) funeral President HH attended/donated cows for the late musician’s children. Do elite Lozis like minister Situmbeko Musokotwane, South Africa–based professor Sitwala Imenda, or ZNBC presenter Innocent Kalaluka proudly dance to ‘malimba’ instrument in a ‘hopani’ (crocodile) style?

THE LUSAKA-NDOLA DUAL CARRIAGEWAY DEAL, NAPSA’S SURPRISING STAKE SURRENDER RAISES LEGAL EYEBROWS- Chanoda Ngwira

THE LUSAKA-NDOLA DUAL CARRIAGEWAY DEAL, NAPSA’S SURPRISING STAKE SURRENDER RAISES LEGAL EYEBROWS

By Chanoda Ngwira F

In a controversial turn of events, the recent agreement between the Zambian government’s National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) and consortium of concessionaires regarding the Lusaka to Ndola dual carriageway has sparked intense scrutiny. The deal involves NAPSA injecting funds into the project but shockingly ceding a majority stake to the consortium granting them operational control for a staggering 25 years to recuperate their investment. This decision raises critical questions, primarily regarding the apparent disregard for the NAPSA INVESTMENTS ACT, which mandates NAPSA’s automatic major shareholder status in projects it funds.

The perplexing decision to sideline NAPSA’s established rights as a major investor in this venture, effectively diminishing the government’s stake, signifies a potential breach of Zambia’s laws and regulations. The glaring imbalance in ownership becomes even more concerning considering the consortium’s absence of financial contribution. How can a crucial investor like the Government of Zambia, working through NAPSA, be relegated to a minor shareholder position when it is NAPSA’s resources fueling the initiative?

Comparisons to past projects further complicate the matter, notably the Chingola to Solwezi road initiative, where NAPSA’s strategic investment model ensured financial gains. Under that arrangement, the National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) currently manages funds on behalf of NAPSA, NRFA is only receiving a modest 20% for administrative purposes while 80% goes to NAPSA. This stark contrast begs the question: why was the Lusaka to Ndola project not executed in a similar vein, allowing NAPSA to safeguard its interests and maximize returns as intended?

Speculations loom regarding possible political motivations behind the unconventional deal, with conjectures suggesting that the UPND Government may have pushed for cost reductions for political gains. However, the looming threat of inflated figures during future valiations could swiftly erase any perceived savings, potentially mirroring previous administration’s figure for the project. This apparent daylight robbery against the Zambian populace, paired with a blatant flouting of legal norms, signifies a worrying trend of impunity and disrespect for established regulations. The Zambian people deserve transparency, accountability, and adherence to laws to uphold the nation’s integrity and safeguard their interests.

CUTS CONCERNED WITH AFLATOXIN DETECTION IN MEALIE MEAL AND CALLS FOR FOOD SAFETY

….urges govt to disclose the specific brands & batches of mealie meal found to be contaminated

Lusaka, 22nd August, 2024 (SMART EAGLES)

The Consumer Unity Trust Society (CUTS) says it is deeply concerned by the recent confirmation from the Zambian Government of aflatoxin contamination in selected mealie meal products available in local markets.

CUTS Board Member Sajeev Nair says this development, coupled with the tragic deàths of over 400 d0gs suspected to have consumed contàminated feed, underscores the urgent need for robust measures to safeguard consumer welfare and ensure the integrity of Zambia’s food supply chain.

Mr Nair explains that Aflatoxins, which have been detected in 11 samples of maize meal, pose serious health risks to both humans and animals.

He said the contamination, identified during post-mortem examinations of the deceàsed d0gs, is particularly alarming as many milling companies in Zambia produce products for both human and animal consumption.

“Thus far, inspections have been conducted at approximately 10 milling companies, with over 25 samples collected for further analysis. CUTS calls for immediate and comprehensive inspections across all food processing industries, as contamination could originate from these critical points in the supply chain. We urge the Government to disclose the specific brands and batches of mealie meal found to be contaminated,” said Mr Nair.

“This transparency is essential to protect consumers and to restore public confidence in the safety of Zambian food products. The implications of aflatoxin contamination extend beyond public health; it also threaten Zambia’s economic growth and the ambition to expand into export markets.”

He observed that as the nation strives to penetrate international markets, particularly in agriculture and food products, maintaining the highest standards of food safety is crucial.

“Contaminated products not only jeopardize consumer health but can also lead to trade restrictions, harming Zambia’s reputation and competitiveness on the global stage. The potential for aflatoxin contamination to damage trade relations and hinder economic progress cannot be overstated. As Zambia positions itself as a reliable exporter of agricultural products, stringent food safety measures must be implemented and enforced,” he added.

“This will protect both domestic and international consumers, bolster Zambia’s market credibility, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.”

Mr Nair emphasized that his organization strongly urges the government to put in place and enforce stringent control measures to prevent future contamination incidents.

“These measures should include enhanced inspections, full transparency in the disclosure of affected products, and strict penalties for companies found in violation of food safety standards. Moreover, as the nation grapples with the threat of mpox, we commend the government’s steps to enhance border surveillance and public health measures,” he continued.

“However, it is vital that consumers have easy access to accurate health information and that public awareness campaigns are intensified to protect the population from both foodborne and transnational diseases.”

The CUTS Board Member reiterated the importance of food safety as a cornerstone of public health and economic prosperity.

Mr Nair said his organization stands ready to support the government’s efforts in ensuring that Zambia’s food products meet the highest safety standards, both for the well-being of the citizens and the continued growth of our economy.

Fred M’Membe has failed to respond and address the real issues such as nepotism and dictatorship  that are forcing people to leave the Socialist Party- Wilson BANDA

OUR RESPONSE TO DR FRED M’MEMBE

Socialist Party President Dr Fred M’membe has been quoted in the News Diggers newspapers saying that the Socialist Party will not go anywhere if it continues to tolerate the indiscipline that is “creeping in,” stressing that “expulsions are necessary.”

1. It is laughable that Dr Fred M’Membe has failed to respond to the fundamental issues that those that have continued to resign from his Party have been raising; instead the man is desperately trying to change the topic all together. People have been leaving the Socialist Party raising serious concerns about the dictatorial/undemocratic and know-it-all attitude of Dr M’membe among other serious leadership challenges that the Party is facing. Why is he failing to respond to these queries that people are raising?

2. What indiscipline is Dr Fred M’Membe talking about? Is expressing divergent views, indiscipline? Is demanding for transparency and accountability or insisting on proper mobilization and strict adherence to constitutional provisions indiscipline? Is questioning why only Dr M’Membe, his daughter, Akende and his two friends Dr Chris Mwikisa and Dr Cosmas Musumali the only people who are making all the decisions in the Party, indiscipline? If expressing divergent views and holding those in leadership accountable is indiscipline as Dr Fred M’Membe is suggesting, then I am afraid that we have a dictator at the helm of the Socialist Party.

3. Can Dr M’Membe tell us what constitutes indiscipline in the SP; can he name those he claims are indisciplined and can he tell us exactly what wrong things they have done!

4. We challenge Dr Fred M’Membe to respond and address the real issues such as intolerance, lack of transparency, failure to mobilise the Party, nepotism and dictatorship within SP that are forcing people to leave the party instead of trying to change the narrative. Burying his head in the sand won’t help him. Avoiding the real issues won’t help him. It is time for Fred M’Membe to face reality. The truth about what is going on in SP is now public and their is no hiding place for Dr M’Membe and his friends.

“ZAMBIANS MUST STOP CONSUMING CONTAMINATED MEALIE MEAL IMMEDIATELY”- NAKACINDA

0

“ZAMBIANS MUST STOP CONSUMING CONTAMINATED MEALIE MEAL IMMEDIATELY.”

Good afternoon fellow country men and women, the international community and the media. I want to address the nation and I pray and hope that this message reaches all well-meaning Zambians in good time, those in govt, the church, faith-based organisations, civil society, international community, members of the ruling party the UPND and Zambians in the diaspora. Today is indeed a dark day for our beloved country mother Zambia.

For the first time in the history of our country the Zambian people have been brought to shame and absolute ridicule for their love for their staple food nshima.

On behalf of the Patriotic Front and the suffering masses we want to add our voice on the unfolding scandal concerning AFLATOXINS contained in mealie meal that has caused the death of dogs and exposed the widening scandals in this UPND govt led by Mr. Hakainde Hichilema.

Firstly, I want to say There is no mealie meal for dogs, first humans consume and left overs are left for dogs, this govt must for once be serious and stop insulting the intelligence of Zambians with this issue of focusing on dogs which died.

In this new dawn govt nothings seems to be working. Yesterday Minister of Health held a hasty presser to shield the selected millers that govt identified to supply this imported maize and not to safeguard the lives and health of citizens which is supposed to be their number one responsibility and priority. Instead, he went in circles defending the known millers.

The levels of corruption at the ministry of health are alarming because this is not the Ministry of Health we know. Alot of illegalities are being perpetuated and the ministry is turning a blind eye. From procuring fake drugs, to missing drugs to expired drugs and now to protecting known millers that are deliberately offloading mealie meal imported by govt to the market that is contaminated without recourse. That is why many have said the people Mr. Hakainde Hichilema appoints are highly incompetent and messy. We also know that his MP Kalila is a doctor why not appoint him to that Ministry to avoid this chipante pante at such a sensitive ministries like ministry of health.

Already we want to inform the nation that it is alleged that money is exchanging hands among selected millers with the ministry of health official and some state House officials to prevent the public from knowing which millers of mealie meal brands that have contaminated mealie meal. And because Mr. Hakainde Hichilema is the papa of corruption, don’t expect anything from him but expect a press briefing defending the millers who are offloading contaminated mealie meal. We want to challenge the gentleman whose dogs died to mention the mealie meal he gave the dogs to announce to the nation. We are challenging the media to follow that man so that he discloses the brand of the mealie meal that caused the death of his dogs and that will be the starting point.

However we want to state the following, there is no system in Zambia which is working, everything has collapsed. The mining sector, the health sector, the agriculture sector, justice, law and order just everything has collapsed under Mr. Hakainde Hichilema.

It is a known fact that the Zambian government is importing mealie meal and maize into the country from South Africa and Tanzania that is officially but we know that there is even maize coming from America. And nangu tapososwa Americans don’t eat nshima so you and I know that the maize is specifically grown for animal feed and so you know the chemical inputs and hence you know its GMO. There is GMO mealie meal on the market currently and Mr. Hakainde Hichilema will never tell the Zambian people the truth. Hakainde Hichilema cares more about business syndicates other than human lives. To be poor now is a death sentence under Mr. Hichilema. Mr. Hakainde Hichilema now looks at everyone as if we are animals or cows, and it is not right.

The Zambia compulsory standards agency did their due diligence and this report has been sitting with Mr. Hakainde Hichilema and the OP and Ministry of Health for over 8 months since last year, but they have decided to neglect it because for them it’s about tonnage of mealie meal to play with price so as to look like they are working.

In Zambia, under UNIP and MMD govts developed silos which were for strategic storage of maize and those can store maize even up to 10 years. But in the countries where we are importing from mealie meal is not their staple food and hence these problems.

The beginning of the problem is that immediately after Mr. Hakainde Hichilema and UPND formed govt they over promised on the issue of the price of the dollar. That was the source of the problem, when HH gave the mines which are our number one export dollar earner he gave them tax holidays because of obligations he had over the years to the UPND sponsors who had mining interests for the period UPND was in opposition. He promised them mining rights and tax holidays in order to recover what they invested. So once in govt he got desperate to show off that the dollar was improving hence the only commodity at his disposal was maize in order to earn dollars. That’s why you saw that the dollar was reducing but he didn’t tell you that he was selling strategic maize reserves left by the Patriotic Front this same Mr. Lungu he insults day and night. Hence after they were exposed and the Zambian people discovered we saw conflicting statements from govt, but Chushi kasanda is our hero because she went open and announced to the nation. That’s why she was removed from the ministry and they brought in a a vuvuzela who acts like he is on steroids and gives conflicting statements with his PS Thabo Kawana. After HH ran out of maize to export so that he can play with the dollar, the next available commodity was electricity, and until now with no shame he is still exporting electricity at the expense of the Zambians. All this is just so as to earn a little dollar to caution the price matrix in order to present himself as fixer when in fact not. Very soon he will run out of what to export and the kwacha will be in free fall, and mark my words very soon.

Back to the issue, the maize that was produced by small scale farmers was sold. It is irresponsible for any govt, how can a parent sale food in his own house and remain empty. FRA gets most of its stock from small scale farmers those who benefit from FISP. Most of commercial farmers are allowed to sale some even export. Now the hard-earned sweat of tax payers’ money was quickly exported just to caution the dollar. It is a blue lie that we owed the farmers and needed to sale the maize in order to pay what was owed, it was even better we sale State House because he doesn’t even live there than sale the maize in our strategic reserves just to caution the dollar.

How then does a minister come on a presser and say we have tested some samples and found them positive to aflatoxin but we won’t mention the brands. How can a govt be protecting millers at the expense of the life of its citizens. UPND is nothing but a criminal enterprise/gang that has put business ahead of its people. Hakainde Hichilema is really a dealer who cares less about the welfare of the poor.

He came in, made the citizens vulnerable by stripping off their dignity by squandering off their staple food to neighboring countries and then introducing Eagle mealie meal which is widely speculated to be imported GMO meal then packaged in ZNS bags. Firstly, videos surfaced of maize packed in ZNS bags being imported. When Zambians questioned them, they resorted to import unpackaged mealie meal and maize which they later came to pack in ZNS sacks. It is all GMOs and am challenging them to subject the ZNS mealie meal to an independent test and audit. Or let them allow us to get ZNS mealie meal samples to labs abroad to verify that this is number one not GMO and also not substantially carrying aflatoxins. Our research bureau has revealed to us that aflatoxins are widely contained in genetically modified foods.

The real solution is Zambians should stop consuming ZNS mealie meal until a thorough report is issued by relevant authorities. But even so, to trust anything from the UPND govt is risking your own life. They are insincere and for them everything is about propaganda. How can a govt be more interested in propaganda at the expense of the lives of their citizens. Govt must close all ZNS milling plants until the next farming season and should stop the distribution of ZNS mealie meal. All supermarkets are advised to stop displaying and selling ZNS mealie meal forthwith in order to wait for proper reports from Zambia Compulsory standards agency.

When there are diseases such as these that threaten the lives of people in greater proportions the World Health Organisation (WHO) must take keen interest. We are calling on WHO to send health experts to conduct thorough independent assessment. This is a shameless govt, amidst a drought and national disaster, we are calling on international relief and aid yet feeding our people toxic food.

We are giving the govt 48hours to disclose the brands of mealie meal that has tested positive because govt has acknowledged that there are several and not one brand that have tested positive to Aflatoxins. Because this is genocide and health terrorism against its own citizens.

Am appealing to my fellow citizens in the compounds to refrain from consuming ZNS mealie meal, stop preparing nshima with ZNS in the restaurants. I want to appeal to prisons service to desist from giving inmates ZNS mealie meal and conduct tests of the mealie meal you are giving inmates, otherwise this govt can be suspected to be conducting genocide to its own citizens by depopulation the prisons indiscriminately.

An independent assessment must be done about which areas this contaminated mealie meal is going so that we stop speculating otherwise we are just thinking wildly about this scandal.

We are all literally dead and just waiting to be buried. Just imagine the proportions of cancer that is brewing in our bodies and is yet to blow up in the face of our health facilities. We are all cancer patients so long as you eat nshima. And this is outrightly on the hands of Mr. Hakainde Hichilema who equally received this report and turned a blind eye from Zambia Compulsory standards out of business interests and political expediency. On matters of health, you just have to be truthful, and not play politics or play to the gallery.

We are calling upon everyone regardless of where you are, civil society, students, pressure groups, stakeholders in the health sector, to conduct peaceful demonstrations and put pressure on Mr. Hakainde Hichilema to immediately withdraw and apologies to the Zambian people. And on this one let not even the police prevent anyone who feels aggrieved and wants to conduct a peaceful protest. The police equally consume nshima and allow us express your frustrations on your behalf.

Mr. Hakainde Hichilema is no longer only an economic hitman and agent of international business men, he is now a fully-fledged health terrorist and we the Zambian people must resolve to get rid of this UPND govt. Prepare your NRCs and register to vote, UPND and HH kuyabebele.

Hon. Munir Zulu refusal to consume the soup probably saved his life- Sean Tembo

THE PARLIAMENT MOTEL SAGA

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. A lot of people have commented on the issue of Lumezi Member of Parliament; Honorable Munir Zulu and what transpired at Parliament Motel a few days ago. According to the story narrated by Hon. Zulu himself, he says he went to Parliament Motel and ordered a bow of soup. However, his order took longer than usual to be processed, to the extent that patrons who came after him and ordered main meals, had their orders served while he continued waiting for his bow of soup. This, according to Hon. Zulu, made him suspicious as to what was delaying the processing of his order. When the order finally came, Hon. Munir Zulu asked the waiter to taste the soup, and the waiter refused to do so. Hon. Zulu then decided to pay for his order but did not consume it as he was not sure if the soup was safe to consume.

2. However, after narrating his story, Hon. Munir Zulu received a lot of backlash from various Government officials, including some Parliament Motel staff who vowed never to serve him again. So the question that needs to be addressed here is whether there is anything wrong with Hon. Zulu’s narration of events which deserves condemnation?

3. The first issue to determine is whether the story narrated by Hon. Munir Zulu is accurate or was it exaggerated in any way, shape or form? Well, the National Assembly actually formally responded to the story narrated by Hon. Zulu, through it’s Senior Media Liaison Officer, a Mr. Nshamba Muzungu. As a matter of fact, the National Assembly in it’s response did not dispute the story in any way. They only condemned Hon. Zulu for making the story public, as according to their statement; “it could tarnish both the motel and the National Assembly itself”. So, for all intents and purposes, the story narrated by Hon. Munir Zulu is accurate, because if it wasn’t, the National Assembly would have disputed it, or at least aspects of it.

4. The second question to determine is whether Hon. Munir Zulu was in order to publish this story of possible poisoning by the National Assembly Motel? Or should he have just kept quiet about the issue? Well, there is a document in this country that we call the Constitution. And in that document, there is a portion that is referred to as the Bill of Rights which gives every citizen of this nation the freedom, right and liberty to express themselves. Therefore, if Hon. Munir Zulu had decided to keep quiet about the issue, that would have been within his rights. Equally, the decision to publicize his suspected poisoning at the National Assembly Motel is very much within his rights as a bonafide citizen of this Republic. No one has a right to tell him to keep quiet. Especially given the fact that no one is disputing the accuracy of his story.

5. The third issue to determine is whether the facts of the circumstances that transpired at the National Assembly Motel provided a reasonable basis for Hon. Munir Zulu to suspect that the soup which he ordered might have been poisoned? Well, any politician would be suspicious if their food took longer than expected after placing an order. Such suspicion would be more than doubled if the waiter serving the food refused to taste it. Why would anyone refuse to taste the food which they have prepared if there is nothing wrong with it? If the waiter in question was uncomfortable tasting the food, why didn’t his supervisor taste it? Or if the supervisor was equally uncomfortable tasting the soup, why didn’t the chef who prepared it taste it? If there is any reputation damage that occurred to the National Assembly Motel by this event, it was occasioned by their own poor handling of this event and not Hon. Munir Zulu.

6. The fourth issue to determine is whether Hon. Munir Zulu acted in any untoward manner during this entire event? The immediate answer to this question is a definite no. The Honorable Member of Parliament even had the courtesy to pay for the soup, despite the fact that he was unable to consume it. If it was me, l doubt that l would be that diplomatic. I mean, the fact that the person who has prepared the food refused to taste it basically renders the food unconsumable, so why should l pay for it? Unless of course l feel charitable on that particular day. So instead of condemning Hon. Munir Zulu, the National Assembly should be applauding him for having behaved in such a gentlemanly way, and should instead chastise their Motel staff for poorly handling the matter. That is assuming that the soup was not in fact poisoned.

7. The last question to determine is whether the National Assembly Motel is in fact capable of poisoning food that is served to a guest? Well, to answer that question, allow me to take you back 11 years ago, to an incident that happened on 12th July 2013 at the National Assembly Motel. On that day, according to a narration of events by the then Solwezi Central MMD Member of Parliament, Hon. Lucky Mulusa, him and his colleagues sitting at the National Assembly Motel bar when a waiter brought him three shots of whiskey which he had not ordered. The MP became suspicious and refused to drink the whiskey. But it did not end there. Him and his colleagues decided to take the whiskey in question for a laboratory analysis. And behold, they results found a high concentration of a poison called Clonazepam. The MP further narrated that he was advised by physicians that had he consumed the whiskey in question, it would have collapsed his liver and also led to a breakdown of the nervous system and subsequent death.

8. In retrospect, it would have been nice if Hon. Munir Zulu had taken the route that Hon. Lucky Mulusa took 11 years ago, by subjecting the suspected laced soup to a laboratory analysis. Then we would have known for sure whether the soup in question was laced with poison or not. Whatever the case, the National Assembly and Government in general should immediately cease and desist from attacking Hon. Munir Zulu regarding the National Assembly Motel saga. The MP’s actions were gentlemanly and above board. His refusal to consume the soup probably saved his life. Anyway, the Future is SET ✌️✌️✌️

M’MEMBE OBSERVES THE NEED TO HAVE AN INCLUSIVE GOVERMENT

M’MEMBE OBSERVES THE NEED TO HAVE AN INCLUSIVE GOVERMENT

….says we need to have a government where all stakeholders are part of the governance system

Lusaka… Wednesday August 21, 2024

Socialist Party (SP) President Dr Fred M’membe has observed the need to have an inclusive government where all stakeholders are brought on board in the governance system of the country.

Dr. M’membe says the country should take a sober reflection on what has been achieved for the past 60 years since the nation got independence.

Dr. M’membe has further observed the need to include the religious leaders, traditional leaders, business community and other leadership structures in order to improve the governance system of the country.

He said it is sad that only politicians are at the center of resource distribution hence the need to include other key stakeholders during this process.

“When we come into power, we will pursude the people of Zambia to change the structure of the legislature or change the ways in which we make the laws of this country. We will increase the participation of the people in the House. Of course the 156 elected Members of Parliament will be there but what we need is to have an additional number of people in Parliament which will include the traditional leadership, religious leaders, the business community, military, academia, trade unions, corporate world and others. These will also represent the interest of their groups. Their role will be to influence policy and make laws,” he said.

“For religious leaders, their power, influence and leadership is growing and not diminishing. It is growing faster than any other leadership. Their involvement in the day to day lives of the people especially during this hardship times cannot be ignored. Whether you are a religious or non religious person, you cannot ignore the leadership of the religious people. They are getting closer and closer to the people than any other leadership.”

He said for the country to develop and strengthen its governance system, there is need to get everyone on board in decision making.

Dr. M’membe said the overreliance on politicians in the distribution of national resources should be curtailed and ensure that a lot of people participate in this process.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE ERB PUBLIC HEARING REGARDING ZESCO’S EMERGENCY TARIFF APPLICATION

ERB HOLDS HEARING FOR ZESCO E.ERGENCY TARIFF APPLICATION

ZESCO Limited says the emergency tariff adjustment proposals to the Energy Regulation Board -ERB- once approved will only be applicable to residential customers that consume above 200 units of power.

ZESCO Head of Business Development PATRICK KAPEPE says customers that consume above 500 units of power account for five to seven percent of the Company’s customer base and that these consume about 24 percent of power.

Mr. KAPEPE says those who consume less than 200 units of power comprise 56 percent of the residential consumer base out of 1.3 million customers and that these will NOT be affected by the adjustment.

He says the proposed emergency tariffs will be reviewed every three months and that the adjustment is anticipated to impact appropriately 44 percent of the customers.

This was during the ERB public hearing for ZESCO Emergency Tariff Application held in Lusaka today.

Mr. KAPEPE said that the proposed adjustment for commercial tariffs is a 38 percent increase for consumption exceeding 500 units.

He said that ZESCO has proposed to maintain the tariffs for entities that offer social services such as hospitals, security wings and pumping stations for water utility companies, among others.

And ZESCO Managing Director VICTOR MAPANI said the proposed emergency tariffs are meant to mitigate the escalating effects of the drought and to seek solutions to lessen the challenges.

Meanwhile, ERB Board Chairperson JAMES BANDA said the Board saw it prudent to have a public hearing even if the law allows ERB to proceed without a public hearing in the case of an emergency application.

Among those that made submissions include United for Better Zambia President HECTOR SOONDO who requested ERB not to approve the proposed increase of ZESCO tariffs as the cost of doing business in the country is high.

And Citizens First Deputy Secretary General CEPHAS MUKUKA called on Government to bail out Zesco.

Dr. MUKUKA said tariffs should NOT be increased as this may in turn affect the prices of commodities.

STATEMENT BY THE EVANGELICAL FELLOWSHIP OF ZAMBIA ON VIDEO CIRCULATING ON SOCIAL MEDIA

STATEMENT BY THE EVANGELICAL FELLOWSHIP OF ZAMBIA ON VIDEO CIRCULATING ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

EVANGELICAL FELLOWSHIP OF ZAMBIA (EFZ) has been inundated with messages to clarify its position on the video circulating on social media where a named self styled pastor is advising congregants that one cannot multiply according to the Bible with only one wife. The “clergyman” further propagates Polygamy, promotes  Divorce and makes sentiments that are absolutely disrespectful towards woman and pours scorn on the institution of marriage.

Our role as a mother body includes among others to give counsel to the nation as a prophetic voice and to preserve right Biblical teaching by being quick to correct error and erroneous doctrine on the pulpits.

We achieve our goals by the power of association and in the spirit of fellowship. This means our mandate to correct erroneous teachings propagatated on the pulpit is concentrated on our associates and the members of our fellowship.

However, the fellowship also speaks on doctrinal matters peddled by non-members. This is done in the spirit of preserving the integrity of the Gospel and promoting sanctity in the Body of Christ within  our nation.

Therefore, the  Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia wishes to distance itself from the said church, its Pastor  and the teaching propagated in the video.

The fellowship wishes to take this opportunity to advise its members in particular and Christians in general to remain committed to the teachings of the Holy Scriptures and to maintain the interpretations as has been handed down to us by Jesus Christ and the Apostles. While polygamy may have been tolerated under the Old Covenant, the clear revelation of Scripture on marriage as taught by our Lord Jesus Christ and the Apostles is that it is between one man and one woman.

We also wish to encourage the general public to be analytical in the choice of churches they choose to attend.

It is important to attend genuine Bible believing and Christ Centered Churches with well established structures of accountability. There are many genuine churches doted allover the country.

We further take this opportunity to advise clergy, particularly young and upcoming pastors,  to take interest in upgrading themselves and expose themselves to Christocentric hermeneutical practice from genuine Bible Schools, both locally and internationally.

It is important that those who wish to lead churches are thoroughly and properly trained so that error and false teachings are minimised.

We sincerely request that the Department of National Guidance and Religious Affairs take action to stop this immoral promoting Pastor from further corrupting the moral values and principles of our nation through false teachings.

TIPS FOR MEN ON HOW TO APPROACH A WOMAN FOR MARRIAGE

By Hon Given Katuta Mwelwa

1. Have confidence; not pride. Confidence is attractive, women detest pride.

2. Women are visual too, look good; it doesn’t have to be an expensive look, but look neat and attractive.

3. Have a good-looking profile picture on social media. It shows how you view yourself. Having a picture not your own makes a woman question you.

4. Post mature things on Facebook/Twitter; yes, women do research on a man who is presenting himself to her. Your posts could be wise quotes, posts on serious issues, humor, travels, fun; but they should be mature. Your posts reveal who you are and what occupies your mind most.

5. Avoid compliments diarrhea, commenting flattering words on so many of her pictures yet you do don’t know each other well. When compliments are overdone by a stranger it can be spooky. Don’t overdo it. Don’t claim you love her yet you don’t even know her. Get a hold of your excitement.

6. Request for her phone number, don’t demand it. If you have captured her attention, chances are, she will eventually give you her phone number; give her time.

7. Make use of her phone number. Call her, ask her when is the best time to call her, send her messages or chat.

8. Have content in your conversations. Don’t start a chat with her and have nothing to talk about. Women love it when the man takes charge of the conversation at the beginning.

9. Avoid sexual compliments at the beginning. Don’t say “You’ve got amazing boobs”, ” such a fine butt you have”, “eish, sexy thighs”. It makes her think you are only after sex.

10. Don’t go on and on making the conversation about you; your success, your cars, how far you have traveled, your money, the number of followers you have on social media. Women don’t like men who brag. Don’t think you are doing her a favor by being with her.

11. Make her feel good about herself, build an environment where she can open up. Let her find herself doing much of the talking, ask questions, show interest. The truth, every woman is looking for a real conversation; if your vibe is good, you are a keeper.

12. Don’t make her feel like she is being interrogated, you throwing questions at her without taking time to listen. Pay attention.

13. When you try and call her phone or text her and she doesn’t respond; don’t get desperate, calling her phone every five minutes, texting her like she is your wife “Where are you!”. Relax, she will get back to you. Possessive men are a turn-off.

14. If you sense other men are also trying to woo her, and maybe even getting close to her; keep your calm. She is beautiful, of course other men will try their luck, but if she is yours and likes you for your good character, no other man will dissuade her from you. Don’t let your jealousy fill you with rage, giving her orders, dictating where she goes and who she sees. If she can’t be comfortable telling you about her ex or how her day has been in her workplace that is full of men, she will begin doubting if you can handle her.

15. Open up too, don’t make her feel like she is the only one who is revealing things about herself. Tell her things about you, it makes the conversation two-way. Tell her about your family, your most memorable moments, your heart’s desires, your embarrassing moments; humanize yourself.

16. If she reveals something shocking about herself, a dark past, a past mistake; don’t judge her, don’t make her feel ashamed. She needs understanding.

17. End each conversation on a high. Even when you enjoy talking with her, pause the conversations to continue later, leave the conversations in a way that she gets wowed. Leave her smiling, leave her better than you found her.

18. Avoid calling her pet names and sweet words at the beginning. Refrain from calling her “Sweetheart”, “Dear”, “Honey”, “Bae” when you two don’t know each other well. Men who are loose with these words are not serious.

19. Keep your focus on her. Don’t make her feel she is competing with another woman yet you are the one who is coming on to her. Don’t go liking and commenting suggestively on the pics of other women, don’t flirt with other women, don’t make her feel your chat with her is disrupted because you are giving attention to other women.

20. Take her on dates on days and venues convenient for her. Her comfort is key, that’s what a real gentleman does. Go at her pace, no pressure.

21. Add value to her life. Correct her with love when she is wrong, find out her dreams, support her, pay attention to what concerns her, build her, be honest with her in your criticism, challenge her, give her fun times, advise her; that’s the kind of man she is looking for.

22. Let her miss you. Yes, you are growing fond of her but sometimes deny each other the chance to talk and meet so that she appreciates your value. This also shows that you are a grown up man, you are busy building your life and vision, that your life is not just about her; you are not putting your entire life in the relationship.TIPS FOR MEN ON HOW TO APPROACH A WOMAN FOR MARRIAGE

TYRESE BREAKS DOWN OVER GRIEF & DIVORCE IN EMOTIONAL ‘BREAKFAST CLUB’ INTERVIEW

Tyrese has returned to The Breakfast Club for another emotional interview where he tearfully discussed grief and the breakdown of his marriage.

The singer and actor bared his soul during the lengthy chat on Tuesday (August 20) as he discussed the death of his mother, his two sisters, film director John Singleton and his Fast & Furious co-star Paul Walker.

“I’m doing the best I can with every 24 hours I get,” Tyrese admitted while tearing up, before proudly declaring: “Black men cry.”

He added: “There is no square footage I could ever live in, there is no rims, no jewelry and no car, there is no net worth, there is no press release, there is no co-star, there is no collaboration in the world that could ever replace my momma.”

“That could ever fill the void of what it’s like to wake up and get married and want to be in something for the rest of your life, and it goes away,” Tyrese, who has been married twice, continued.

Offering insight into his mental state following the end of his relationships, Tyrese said: “When divorces happen, women aren’t the only ones that are devastated. When a miscarriage happens, women are not the only ones that you should be checking on.

“When you can’t put food on the table because your career goes up and then it goes down, stop skipping over the man and just checking on the woman.”

In one of the more bizarre moments from the interview, Tyrese then revealed that the jewelry he was wearing was fake.

“If it all ends for me tomorrow, I never sold you on fake. None of the jewelry that’s on my arm is real,” he said as he threw off a bracelet from his wrist with tears running down his face.

He added: “Don’t love me because of no fucking diamond. This bracelet right here looks real as a motherfucker. This shit was $23 on Amazon.”

The Transformers actor concluded with some words of wisdom: “If you out here getting fake vagina over your fake jewelry, reality is reality.”

“This is politics in court” – Pastor Mboro claims orders from “above” keeping him in jail after he is denied bail

The legal representatives of controversial South African cleric Pastor Mboro claim that some powerful politicians are pulling the strings to ensure his stay in jail after he was denied bail earlier this week.

Mboro was denied bail together with his bodyguard, Clement Baloyi, while his son, Revival Motsoeneng, was released on warning. The bail denial condemned the cleric to two more months in prison.

Mboro’s lawyer, Phillip Dlamini said he believed that the police officers being tasked with the investigation of the matter were receiving instructions from high-ranking politicians.

“This is politics in court, or the police are acting on some instructions from above to ensure that Motsoeneng doesn’t get bail. This is not because the evidence says so or there are tangible reasons why he shouldn’t be granted bail.

“This is a typical case where the three are kept in jail, not in the interest of justice,” he said.

Dlamini said while they respected the South African Police Services as a whole, they were singling out the officers who were handling Mboro’s case in particular.

“I’m not criticising the police. Some officers are doing a great job. This court is not a rubber stamp of the police. It is independent of anybody. It administers fair, equitable justice. The three are not a flight risk,” he said.

“The two accused are suffering because of Motsoeneng. He is well-known and popular throughout the country.”

Mboro was denied bail after state prosecutor Pheello Vilakazi argued that it would send a bad message to the rest of the community if men who were seen threatening children were released so soon after their arrest.

“It will not be in the interest of justice for any of the accused persons to be granted bail unless they can show evidence that their release will not undermine the interest of justice,” Vilakazi said.

The self-proclaimed prophet together with his son and bodyguard, stormed the premises of a Katlehong school and left with two boys that are said to be grandchildren.

The mother of the children reportedly died in April, resulting in a dispute between the paternal and maternal sides of the family over custody of the children.

Following the incident, angry community members and learners set fire to the Incredible Happenings Church premises, destroying the large white marquee.

Jennifer Lopez has filed for divorce from Ben Affleck after 2 years of marriage

American actress, Jennifer Lopez has filed for divorce from Ben Affleck after 2 years of marriage.

Lopez filed for divorce on Tuesday, August 20, in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to court documents. A source close to Lopez said the couple did not have a prenup.

The former lovers married in July 2022 after having rekindled their relationship the previous year.

Lopez and Affleck were engaged in the early 2000s but broke up before they were married and then spent a long 17 years apart.

The actress was married from 2004 to 2014 to singer Marc Anthony, with whom she shares her two children, and she was engaged to New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez in 2019 before they broke up in 2021.

In total, Lopez has been married four times. During this period, Affleck married actor Jennifer Garner in 2005 to 2018. They have three children together.

Lopez and Affleck met on the set of “Gigli” in 2002, according to Vulture, and by November of that year, they were engaged.

Lopez announced in April 2022 that she and Affleck were once again engaged, 20 years after the first proposal. They married on July 16, 2022, and got a marriage license from Clark County, Nevada, court records show.

The couple married in Las Vegas and arrived at the chapel just before midnight to wait in line with four other couples, according to Lopez’s fan newsletter, the J Lo, which blasted out the news just after the ceremony.

“We did it,” the report said. “Behind us two men held hands and held each other. In front of us, a young couple who made the three hour drive from Victorville on their daughter’s second birthday — all of us wanting the same thing — for the world to recognize us as partners and to declare our love to the world through the ancient and nearly universal symbol of marriage.”

The pair said at the time that “it was the best possible wedding we could have imagined. One we dreamed of long ago and one made real.”

Rumors began to surface in May that the couple was heading for divorce as tabloids reported that they hadn’t been seen together in weeks and that Affleck had moved out of their home, which was then put up for sale, before he moved into his own home.

Man is b!tten on the t£sticles by a pyth0n while sitting on toilet, leaving his bathroom sprayed in blo0d

A man was b!tten on the t£sticles by a huge python in Thailand, leaving his bathroom sprayed in blo0d as he desperately be@t it to de@th with a toilet brush.

Thanat Thangtewanon was attacked by the 12ft reptile hiding in the U-bend of his home toilet on Tuesday, August 20.

Horrifying pictures show the aftermath of the snake attack.

Thanat said that moments after sitting down he felt a sharp pain tear through his testicles.

He said: “I felt something biting my balls. It was very painful, so I put my hands in the toilet to see what was wrong. I was shocked that I grabbed a snake.

“I quickly stood up and plucked it out. I felt pain, really bad pain, and there was blood everywhere, but I was more shocked to have found a python in the toilet.”

In a desperate attempt to break its grasp, Thanat grabbed the toilet brush and started hitting at the snake’s head until it loosened its grip and died.

The father immediately went to a hospital to get a tetanus vaccine.

He said doctors told him he would not need stitches as the wound was not deep enough to sever the skin and it would heal in a couple of weeks.

He added: “My testicles are safe now. I’m lucky it wasn’t a venomous snake. A cobra would have killed me.

“But I haven’t used that toilet again since.

“Every time I go, I check what’s inside and put a brush in there to make sure.”

Pythons attacking people using toilets have happened several times before in Thailand.

In 2016, a resident Attaporn Boonmakchuay was ambushed by a 10-foot-long python while using a squat toilet in Chachoengsao province.

His wife ran into the room upon hearing him scream and helped prise the python’s jaws from his penis.

He passed out from blood loss but survived after being treated at the Chularat Hospital.

In 2020, a housewife Boonsong Plaikaew was bitten on her buttocks by a python while sitting on the toilet bowl in Samut Prakan province.

RFK Jr.’s campaign suggests he may drop out and join forces with Trump

0

The campaign of US Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has revealed he may drop out to join forces with Republican Party presidential candidate, Donald Trump.

RFK Jr’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan says their campaign is considering dropping out and supporting former President Trump to avoid a Kamala Harris presidency.

The entrepreneur and attorney admitted there are two paths for the RFK campaign to go down, one being to stay in the race and create more legitimacy for independent presidential candidates or to suspend its run and endorse Trump, which could give him the lift he needs to beat Harris in November.

“We are taking a very serious look at making sure that the people that have corrupted our fair and free democracy do not end up in the office,” she said on an episode of the “Impact Theory” podcast posted Tuesday, August 20.

“Is the risk of a Harris-Walz presidency worth us staying in?” she asked podcast host Tom Bilyeu.

The tech entrepreneur discussed claims that Kennedy Jr. is a “spoiler candidate,” telling the host that she put “tens of millions of dollars” into the campaign to win the presidency. “We didn’t want to be a spoiler. We wanted to win. We wanted a fair shot.”

However, she accused the DNC of sabotage.

“They have banned us, shadow-banned us, kept us off stages, manipulated polls, used lawfare against us, sued us in every possible state, they’ve even planted insiders into our campaign to disrupt it and to create actual legal issues for us,” she said.

Shanahan, a former Democratic donor, added she is “so disappointed” she ever helped the Democratic Party.

“There’s two options that we’re looking at and one is staying in, forming that new party, but we run the risk of a Kamala Harris and Walz presidency because we draw votes from Trump, we draw somehow more votes from Trump. Or we walk away right now and join forces with Donald Trump and, you know, we walk away from that and explain to our base why we’re making this decision,” she said.

“Not an easy decision,” Shanahan added.

The Washington Post reported earlier this month that Kennedy Jr. reached out to Harris’ team to discuss the possibility of working inside a future Cabinet. However, the candidate denied the report during a recent livestream town hall event.

“That’s fake news,” he said last week, adding, “I didn’t ask Kamala Harris for a Cabinet position, but I’ve reached out to all the candidates. I’ve met with some.”

Shanahan denied the report during the podcast as well, stating, “Those are the MSN [mainstream news] just taking something and spinning in a way that makes, you know, their chosen political group look good. Fake news.”

Prince Harry is unhappy in America

0

Prince Harry is “an angry boy” in the USA as he has been isolated from his family and friends in the UK and misses home, a report clams.

The claim was made by “one of Harry’s oldest friends” who said he’s among the few to get “the odd WhatsApp from him.”

The unnamed friend spoke to The UK Sunday Times ahead of the Duke of Sussex’s 40th birthday in September.

“He’s an angry boy,” the pal claimed.

“Things haven’t turned out how he wanted. I think he misses being over here [in Britain] desperately and wants to be admired more. Anyone who knows him feels he’d rather be top of the pops here with everyone loving him, as they do with [his older brother] William and Kate.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back as senior royals in 2020. They now reside in California.

According to the report, Harry’s circle of friends has significantly shrunk since he made his royal exit in 2020. In his Netflix docuseries “Harry & Meghan,” the prince admitted, “I miss my friends… I’ve lost a few friends in this process.”

One of Harry’s pals told the outlet that many still cannot forgive the royal for choosing to air out his grievances since his exit.

“I can’t believe he’d stoop so low,” said the pal. “It’s outrageously disloyal. Oprah, Netflix and then the book? Three strikes and you’re out.”

According to the report, Harry’s desire for freedom came at a hefty price. His relationship with William has been “shattered almost certainly beyond repair” as his relationship with his father, King Charles, is “strained to [a] breaking point.” His ties to the rest of the royal family have also been “damaged by the artillery of truth bombs he has fired.”

“I know how important it is for him to have a happy, settled family life, but you need to do more than that if you’re him,” a source who has known Harry since his teenage years told the outlet.

“He has ended up isolated from his family and most of his old mates, in an environment where your friendships are not like the ones you forged as a young man,” the source claimed. “He used to love a night out in the pub and hanging out in the country with friends. Maybe he has grown into a different person, but do I think he’d really suit the Californian lifestyle? No.

“Now we’ve seen it all play out, what has that left him with? On the surface, an enviable lifestyle — but for the Harry I know, I can’t imagine that gilded exile in California is where he wanted to end up.”

MACHINE GUN KELLY RECALLS ‘HEARTBREAKING’ MOMENT WITH DAUGHTER THAT MADE HIM QUIT DRUGS

Machine Gun Kelly has revealed the “heartbreaking” conversation he had with his daughter that led him to kick his drug habit.

Appearing on Gillie Da Kid and Wallo’s Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, the rapper and singer recalled what his teenage daughter Casie said to him that inspired him to get sober.

“It started with my daughter saying, ‘Dad, you know I can tell when you’re high?’ It broke my heart. It was like… the ultimate letdown,” he said, adding that his daughter was just 11 or 12 years old at the time.

“It took me a while afterwards because obviously, you know, drugs have a vice grip on you. Also, I grew up in a house where being somebody else was beaten into me […] because you aren’t who your father wants you to be, and really that’s a reflection of him not being who he wanted to be.”

He added: “That was step one for me. As a father and as a man, to be the father I wish my dad would have been, I have to break this generational curse for my kid.”

It was earlier this month that Machine Gun Kelly revealed that he quietly checked himself into rehab in 2023 and had since celebrated a year of sobriety.

“I’m completely sober from everything. I don’t drink anymore. I haven’t drank since last August,” he said on Bunnie XO’s Dumb Blonde podcast.

He added: “I didn’t tell anybody outside of the [people] closest to me. That was my first time I ever went to rehab. I’m really happy when I’m clear and me and my daughter are having our conversations and I’m coming from a place of being centered and holding space for what a child needs from their parent. Both of my feet are on the ground and I’m unstoppable.

“I’m just happy that I’m able to start to be comfortable enough to show people who I am because I kind of depended on my art to do that.”

THE GAME SUFFERS EMBARRASSING SLIP WHILE WALKING DOWN AISLE AT FRIEND’S WEDDING

The Game has been caught in an embarrassing moment as he was filmed slipping over as he walked down the aisle at a friend’s wedding.

The Compton rapper was attending the wedding of rapper Kid Red and Kimora Larue this past weekend when he lost his balance while making his way to the altar.

All was going well until The Game got halfway down the aisle and slipped on the white rose petals that were scattered across the floor, with fellow guests heard gasping.

The Game appeared to take a dramatic tumble but the video cuts off before revealing what actually happened to him.

The “Hate It or Love It” hitmaker later clarified that he did not in fact hit the floor following the slip.

He commented on Instagram: “Ah slipped on the wet roses, did the James brown & wiggled up out that shhhhhhiiiii.. the playa way. Nothing to see here [crying laughing emojis].”

The Game later joked about the incident while posting photos of himself having a good time at the wedding, proving the slip did not ruin the day.

He said: “I need to go to more weddings til it’s my own lol… that’s where the energy at.”

The rapper even appeared to officiate the wedding as a video posted by Larue showed him stood at the alter holding a microphone and pronouncing the couple husband and wife.

The Documentary MC recently revealed that his own family will be expanding as he is set to become a dad again at the age of 44.

Appearing on the Tacos & Shawarma podcast, The Game confirmed rumors that he was expecting his fourth child.

He also said he was taking inspiration from JAY-Z and Mariah Carey as an older parent: “I’m 44, so when my new child is 21, I’ll be 65. And that seems kinda old until you start thinking about who’s 65 now. I don’t know how old Mariah Carey is, but she has to be, like, 10 years older than me. Or JAY-Z or somebody like that.”

Nigerians outraged by president’s new plane

Many Nigerians have reacted with outrage after a new plane was bought for President Bola Tinubu at a time when the economy is experiencing its worst crisis in a generation.

The purchase comes less than two weeks after thousands took to the streets across the country to protest at rising hunger and the cost of living.

Elected last year to lead Africa’s most populous country, Mr Tinubu has introduced several economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, which have contributed to high inflation, currently over 30%.

President Tinubu said the reforms were necessary to cut government spending and stimulate long-term growth.

In January, the Nigerian president announced a 60% reduction in the size of official travel delegations, including his own entourage.

However, on Monday, the president departed for France using a newly acquired
Airbus A330, which has become the latest addition to the presidential fleet of more than five aircraft.

The cost of the plane has not been disclosed, and nor has the reason for his trip.

X user @Fdmlearn said it wasn’t right that Nigerians were being told to undergo economic pain while the government was buying a new plane for the president.
“Wait so despite the Tinubu-led Government telling Nigerians to bear the economic hardship and wait for a better tomorrow, they were busy paying cash for a new private Jet to add to the presidential fleet that has over 6 aircraft’s already?”.

Another X user @RealOlaudah was even angrier.

“Let’s tell ourselves the truth. Tinubu’s new Airbus presidential aircraft purchase for N150 billion at a time of penury, hunger, and want shows how wicked, selfish, self-indulgent, and insensitive to the plight of the average Nigerian he really is.”

However, @Timi_The_Law says he supports the president’s decision as the plane is not personal but belongs to the office of the president.

“Tinubu’s decision to buy a new plane is the right one. The plane belongs to the office of the president, and future presidents will enjoy it,” he posted.
It is not known if lawmakers approved the purchase, which was not mentioned in this year’s budget.

In a statement on X, President Tinubu’s media aide Bayo Onanuga said the new plane would actually save money.

“The new plane, bought far below the market price, saves Nigeria huge maintenance and fuel costs, running into millions of dollars yearly,” the statement read in part.

The new presidential jet was recently released to the Nigerian government after it was seized by a Chinese firm, Zhangson Investment Co. Limited, which obtained a Paris court order to seize some Nigerian government assets following an investment dispute with Ogun state in south-west Nigeria.

The 15-year-old plane, with a market value of $600m (£460m) is said to have an elaborate configuration for VIPs and replaces the country’s 19-year-old Boeing BBJ 737-700.

Nigerian officials have previously said that the presidential fleet had a high maintenance cost due to the age of its planes.

In June, lawmakers recommended the purchase of two new aircraft for the president and his deputy, saying the old ones were not safe.

Last month, lawmakers passed a supplementary budget, which sought to raise the 2024 budget from 28.7 trillion naira ($18bn; £14bn) to 35.06 trillion naira.
It is not known if the purchase of the new plane was included in this budget.

The BBC has reached out to the Senate President and the Office of the National Security Adviser but is yet to get a response.

Panicked African workers prevented from leaving Lebanon

“I want to go home,” Kenyan Eulita Jerop tells the BBC from Lebanon, where she is employed as a domestic worker.

However, the terms of her employment make it difficult for her to leave, despite fears of an all-out war in the country.

She has been terrified by the unfamiliar sounds she has heard overhead on the outskirts of the capital, Beirut.
The 35-year-old has been working there for the past 14 months.

“It was so scary. We were told it wasn’t bombed, but it was [planes breaking] the sound barrier,” she says. “But the sounds were hitting so hard.”

Her panic is shared by many others in her WhatsApp group of fellow domestic workers, she adds.

The loud booms in the sky came from fighter planes. There are fears that they could foreshadow a full-on war.

Israel and Lebanon-based group Hezbollah have traded near-daily fire across the border since the 7 October Hamas attack on Israel. It prompted the Israeli invasion of Gaza, to eliminate Hamas.

Hezbollah, a political movement and Iran-backed militia, says it is attacking Israel in support of the Palestinian people.

The shells have mostly fallen in southern Lebanon and northern Israel, but there are concerns that the rest of Lebanon could get caught up as the conflict transforms into a wider regional struggle.

The US, UK, Australia, France, and Canada have all issued official advice for their citizens to leave Lebanon as soon as possible.
But getting out is easier for some than others.
Ms Jerop said it was common for employers to take their passports on arrival in Lebanon.

Even with a passport, domestic workers still need an exit visa to leave – paperwork which their boss must approve.
This is allowed to happen under the country’s “kafala” (sponsorship) system for foreign workers – which employs an estimated 250,000 people.

“Kafala” gives individuals or companies permits to employ foreign workers. This means that their immigration status is entirely dependent on their employer and they have limited rights.

Employers can take advantage of their position and many women are overworked, underpaid, and physically abused – though this is not the case for Ms Jerop.
Despite calls for significant reforms, the system continues in several Arab states.
Daniela Rovina, communications officer at the International Organization for Migration, told the BBC that under international law a person must be allowed to leave a country if a conflict occurs.
In Ms Jerop’s case, her employers want her to continue working in Lebanon.

“They are saying the situation has been here in Lebanon for many years, and there is nothing to worry about,” she says. “But for us the tension is high. We are not used to these kinds of [bombing] sounds.”

But even with papers, Ms. Jerop and her fellow domestic workers face other challenges to leaving.

“Few flights are available and they are very expensive,” she says.
Flights to Kenya cost up to $1,000 (£770).

Banchi Yimer, who founded an organisation supporting the rights of Ethiopian domestic workers, says the average monthly salary used to be $150 but since the cost-of-living crisis, which hit Lebanon hard, “many are not getting paid at all”.

“Every day we receive calls from women panicking… they ask us if we have any [evacuation] plan, if we can do anything about it.”
Chiku, another domestic worker from Kenya, whose name we have changed to protect her safety, cannot pay for the flight.

She has been living in Baabda, in the west of Lebanon, for almost a year.

“I personally would like to go back home. But the tickets are so costly,” she says. “And my mum and dad also can’t afford that money.”
She has been living in fear for the past few weeks, but like Ms Jerop, her employer has told her to stay.

“They say I can’t leave because I haven’t finished my contract,” Chiku says. “But is this contract more important than my life?”
The Lebanese labour ministry has not yet responded to a BBC request for comment.

The Kenyan authorities say that if war does break out, they will put an evacuation plan in place.

Roseline Kathure Njogu, in charge of diaspora affairs for the Kenyan government, told the BBC the department can issue emergency travel documents for those without their passports.

She assured that the Kenyan government would be able to provide emergency flights.

“We have around 26,000 Kenyans in Lebanon, and 1,500 have registered with us for evacuation,” she said.
But many want to leave right now.

Ethiopian government spokesperson Nebiyu Tedla told the BBC they are “preparing contingency plans to evacuate diplomats and citizens from Lebanon if necessary”.

However, Ms Banchi makes the point that even before the Israel-Gaza conflict, there were already many Ethiopian women stranded in Lebanon desperate to leave.

A collapse in Lebanon’s economy in 2020 left many Ethiopian domestic workers out of a job.

“Many cannot even afford rent or medical assistance, let alone a flight home,” she says.

While foreign embassies continue to work on evacuation plans, many feel they have been abandoned by their governments to fend for themselves.
Chiku is trying to set aside money to pay for a flight home.
“But what about the others who can’t?” she asks.

Andersson and Renard in talks to take Nigeria job

0

Nigeria’s long search for a head coach is in its final stages, but complications persist with two candidates left in the race.

The Super Eagles have been without a permanent boss since Finidi George stepped down only two matches into a two-year contract he signed as recently as May.

George, who was part of the Nigeria squad that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), had initially held the role in an interim capacity for the March international window.

He managed only one win throughout his four matches in charge, and the 2-1 defeat by Benin that rounded off his short-lived tenure leaves Nigeria languishing second from bottom in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group.

Amid much speculation, as well as the involvement of the country’s sports minister, Nigeria has honed in on two candidates: Swede Janne Andersson and Frenchman Herve Renard.

Whoever gets the nod, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is in a race against time as qualifying for the 2025 Afcon begins on 7 September.

Andersson represents the pragmatic option for Nigeria, both in profile and affordability.

Last year, the 61-year-old ended a seven-year spell in charge of Sweden, in which he reached the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the last 16 at the 2020 European Championship.

However, the latter years of his tenure were marked by underachievement and he resigned in November after failing to secure a place at either the 2022 World Cup or Euro 2024.

Anderson, who has only ever coached in Sweden, boasts a domestic league title win with IFK Norrkoping and is said to be enthused by the prospect of managing in Africa, despite reservations about his lack of experience outside his homeland.

Some critics have flagged concerns over the manner in which his time with Sweden ended, yet the NFF is convinced that Andersson has a professional approach.

His willingness to recall Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the international fold, even after the former AC Milan and Barcelona striker publicly questioned his competence, is seen as an illustration of his pragmaticism.

The only significant obstacle to his appointment is the fact that, for personal reasons, Andersson is only available to take on the role in mid-September.

By that point, Nigeria’s 2025 Afcon qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda will have taken place.

A workaround could see his assistant Peter Wettergren work alongside an interim – most likely NFF technical director Augustine Eguavoen – for those opening fixtures.

Can the NFF afford Renard?

Renard boasts the bigger profile of the two candidates – but would be a much more difficult appointment to pull off.

The Frenchman has enjoyed great success in African football, being the only coach to lift the Afcon trophy with two different nations.

Renard also led Morocco and Saudi Arabia to creditable showings at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups respectively, famously beating eventual winners Argentina in a group match at the latter tournament.

His most recent appointment saw him lead France’s women to respectable – but somewhat underwhelming – quarter-final exits at the 2023 Women’s World Cup and this year’s Olympics.

Recently overlooked for the United States men’s national team job, the 55-year-old has received approaches from European, African, and Asian countries, even though he is not actively hunting for a new position.

Egypt is reportedly willing to offer him a $2m (£1.5m) annual salary, a figure that Nigeria would be unable to match.

His financial demands have been labelled as “practically outrageous” by a top NFF official, an interesting comment considering that Nigeria are offering the biggest contract for a head coach in their history.

Despite the financial constraints, Renard continues to be viewed as the favoured choice in light of his experience and winning record within African football.

He is also excited by the prospect of managing one of the continent’s biggest nations.

Time, however, is running out for both parties to find common ground.

A bumpy ride ahead

Whichever man emerges from the recruitment process will have his work cut out.

What seemed to many like a comfortable World Cup qualifying draw has proven to be more difficult than expected, with unfancied Rwanda leading the way in Group C and only Zimbabwe boasting a worse record than Nigeria after four rounds of the 10-game campaign.

The new boss will also need to immediately get the media and a jaded fanbase onside.

The Super Eagles’ run to the final of Afcon 2023 was unexpected and, given what has followed, can be considered a blip amidst an overall downward trend.

This is not unrelated to the absence of critical infrastructure within Nigeria’s football administration.

There is currently no permanent home ground for men’s and women’s national teams, with recent fixtures mostly hosted in Uyo by default as the Godswill Akpabio Stadium is the only ground that satisfies the Confederation of African Football’s requirements for international football.

Similarly, there is no bespoke training facility in the vein of England’s St George’s Park or France’s Clairefontaine, and arrangements are typically on an ad-hoc basis.

There is also the issue of players being owed allowances and match bonuses, one which persists within the current squad.

These drains on morale and performance are factors any prospective head coach will need to grapple with – and could be crucial as the Super Eagles bid to reach Afcon 2025 and salvage their ailing World Cup qualifying campaign.

American tourists survive aircraft accident in Livingstone

AN adventurous fly over the Victoria falls almost ended deadly after the helicopter that two American tourist had booked was trying to return to the airstrip and it’s engine suddenly stopped prompting the pilot to apply emergency landing procedures yesterday.

Details are that around 16:30 hours, the two American Nationals who are lodging at Royal Hotel booked the helicopter from Batoka Sky Livingstone to fly over the Victoria Falls and the surrounding areas.

The aircraft was flown by a male South African pilot, Steenkamp Reyneke, aged 33 and their journey took off from Batoka Sky at 16:40 hours.

The duration of the flight was 15 minutes.

But as time for landing came, Reyneke was trying to return the Aircraft to the airstrip, heading to Chrisma Hotel and  flying above the sewer ponds.

Suddenly as the helicopter flew in the Zambian sky, its engine stopped, prompting the pilot to apply emergency landing procedures.

However, the circumstances left the pilot with no option but to execute an emergency landing in an area which seemed to be open and without obstacles, but eventually landed in the sewer ponds as the aircraft could not glide further.

The accident happened at 17:10 hours, leaving one of the helicopter rotar blades deformed, but with no serious damages.

Luckily for the two passengers and pilot, they survived without any injuries and were immediately evacuated after the accident.

Batoka Sky Livingstone Manager, Daniel Geldenhuys, 44 then reported the matter to Livingstone Central police station.

Southern Province police Commanding Officer, Auxensio Daka who confirmed the incident said police visited the scene and found the helicopter partially submerged in the sewer ponds which is covered by aqua vegetation.

He added that attempts to meet the two American passengers by police proved futile as they were kept under seclusion at Royal Hotel to help them recover from trauma.

“ However, Avani Hotel management assured Police that the two passengers will be available for interviews today, ”Daka said.

He also said that police were also unable to get the identities of the passengers as access to their rooms was restricted because the hotel administration kept them under trauma management.

CHINESE COUPLE ACCUSED OF SMUGGLING DOLLARS, GOLD, DEMAND TO TO BE TAKEN TO COURT

CHINESE COUPLE ACCUSED OF SMUGGLING DOLLARS, GOLD, DEMAND TO TO BE TAKEN TO COURT

AFTER a week in detention, a Chinese couple alleged to have smuggled dollars and gold in the country from Zimbabwe, have applied to the Lusaka High Court to order for their Court appearance.

On August 15, police officers intercepted the couple’s Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with a Zimbabwean plate number with its interior masking millions of dollars worth of treasure and a contraband hidden within.

Stashed expertly in the car’s door panels, were 30 kilograms of gold and US$200,000 in cash.

When interviewed, the couple expressed ignorance about the contraband, with Yanjing claiming she had purchased the vehicle less than two weeks prior to their interception and was unaware of the hidden items.

The couple was taken into detention after which further investigations revealed that the couple was involved in the business of selling fencing wire.

Zhao Yanjing and Zhao Changson have now filed a writ of Habeas Corpus in the Lusaka High Court, seeking an order compelling the officer in charge at Lusaka Central Police to take them to court so that they can be tried for their alleged crime.

According to an affidavit filed in support of ex-parte notice of motion for writ of habeas corpus ad subjiciendum sworn by their lawyer Ndlovu Kwazinkosi, a Zimbabwean national, the latter said his clients have been subject to investigations for more than seven days.

Kwazinkosi said his clients are distressed and are unwell.

“The officer in charge confirmed to me that he was still waiting for guidance on how to proceed and as such he could not bond the accused persons,” he said.

“That on August 12, 2024, the applicants herein were traveling into Zambia from Zimbabwe through chirundu boarder were intercepted and arrested by the police officers on suspicion that they where caring precious stones and undeclared foreign currency.”

Kwazinkosi said upon being arrested ,the applicants were moved to Lusaka Central police station where they have been in detention ever since.

He said the couple’s detention is illegal and Yanjing is unwell as she was rushed to the hospital and the doctor prescribed bed rest which she is still being denied.

“Yanjing will be unable to receive this medical rest under the circumstance as she is still in detention….the arrest and continued detention of the applicants is unlawful and unconstitutional,” said Kwazinkosi.

“I therefore respectfully apply on behalf of the applicants to this court to issue forthwith a writ directing the officer in charge at Lusaka Central police station and others who may have in control of the applicants to have the applicant’s bodies before this court immediately after receipt of such writ.”

HICHILEMA’S CLOSE FRIENDS, BUSINESS ASSOCIATES, AND GOVT DEALS- Fred M’membe

HICHILEMA’S CLOSE FRIENDS, BUSINESS ASSOCIATES, AND GOVT DEALS

AFLIFE, an entity controlled and managed by Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s close friends and business associates, is reported to be handling, syndicating, and offloading huge property investment deals around the country. With the most recent property transaction being the sale of a four-story building (former MTN next to Citi Bank), which is located in Rhodes Park at Elunda Park area. The Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS), a state entity, has purchased this property, and again, AFLIFE’s involvement in this transaction has been mentioned by a whistleblower.

It, therefore, begs the questions: how is AFLIFE suddenly syndicating deals and selling off properties they couldn’t sell before Mr Hichilema and the UPND came to power? Why has AFLIFE’s business dealings with state entities become so easy? Where has this astuteness in coaxing government ministries, agencies, departments, and parastatals to close pricey business deals in real time come from? How has AFLIFE become so attractive for the state to do business with them? What is Mr Muna Hantuba doing right, which other businessmen are failing to do? Can Mr Hantuba share his secret?

Any intelligent person will certainly suspect that there is a structured system of influence peddling and inside dealing, which is corruption in itself, that is fraudulently turning tax payer’s money into personal money. There is a conscientious manipulation and harvesting of state funds by certain key individuals in this government using their friends and business associates. We say this because we are also aware of other similar transactions that are pending. It is a fact that the same people controlling some of these private entities involved in these corrupt schemes today are the same ones running government.

But time will catch up with them. They will not be clever for long. As the Bembas say “Ifya kulya ubushiku fitulikila ku malushi”. The sweeping humiliation and disgrace that awaits those engaged in this sort of greediness is unconceivable, ba kasebana ba mambala!

That is why even the declaration of assets has become a problem because they don’t want Zambians to know. But eventually, Zambians will know everything they are doing, and in fact, they are starting to know quite a lot. Zambians are aware of the corruption, embezzlement, cronyism, regulatory capture, lobbying and undue influence on policymaking and other crooked vices that are undermining democratic methods, compromising public interest, and hindering government’s capacity to effectively and efficiently serve our people. But it’s just a matter of time before all this turns into tears for all criminals

Ba Zambia, we made a mistake that must be corrected before we lose the entire plantation.

ZESCO EMMERGENCY ELECTRICITY TARIFF APPLICATION – FACTS BY DR. JOHNSTONE CHIKWANDA, ENERGY EXPERT

ZESCO EMMERGENCY ELECTRICITY TARIFF APPLICATION – FACTS BY DR. JOHNSTONE CHIKWANDA, ENERGY EXPERT

20.08. 2024

Zesco has applied to ERB seeking an emergency electricity price increase to meet the high cost of importing electricity.

ERB will hold a public hearing tomorrow at its Head Office to receive comments from stakeholders.

WHO IS NOT AFFECTED BY THIS APPLICATION?

730,000 Zesco customers who use less than 200 units of electricity per month are not affected.

This customer base is over 56% of the total number of customers which Zesco has.

This customer base is where the most vulnerable and a significant number of middle-class customers are found.

This is unprecedented in the history of this country that such a huge number of customers have been protected from electricity price increase should ERB approve the request from Zesco.

This is a clear demonstration that the policy on electricity adjustment is shifting the burden to those who use a lot of electricity.

This pattern of shifting the burden is also clear in the 2023 and 2024 electricity adjustment.

WHO WILL BE AFFECTED MOST?

Customers who use more than 500 units per month will be affected the most.

This represents a narrow customer base. Should the request be approved, it means this category will start spending more than K3,500 on electricity units per month. Given that the price of a standard solar panel is about K3,000, my strong advice to those who consumer more than 500 units per month is that they will be better off buying solar panels.

In any case, most of the customers in this category already have invested in batteries and inverters.

The only remaining step is to buy solar panels.

WHO ELSE WILL BE AFFECTED?

The electricity price for those who use between 200 units and 300 units will increase by 53 ngwee per unit.

Those who use between 300 units and 400 units, the price will increase by 85 ngwee per unit and those who use 400 units and 500 units the price will increase by K1.27 ngwee per unit.

This shows that different customers will be affected differently with the burden shifting to those who use a lot of electricity.

In the 4 categories, the proposed increase is 50%, 50%, 75% and 156% respectively with 156% being for those who use more than 500 units.

The average percentage increase is 82.75% across the 4 customer categories.

IS THIS THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE INCREASE IN THE HISTORY OF ZAMBIA?

In 2019 the electricity price was increased by an average of 113% across different customers while the current request from Zesco for emergency approval is an average of 82.75%. In 2019, there was no emergency compared to the current situation.

HOW LONG WILL THE EMERGENCY PRICES LAST IF ERB APPROVES THE REQUEST?

According to the Electricity Act, a review of the circumstances may2 be taken after 3 months. Should the emergence situation fall off, it is possible to come back to the initial electricity prices.

WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF ERB REFUSES TO APPROVE THE REQUEST?

Zesco has little electricity remaining meaning that most of the electricity we are consuming is coming from independent power producers and from outside the country at a price more than double than what Zesco is currently mostly currently selling. If the request is not approved, the impact of not importing electricity will be worse than the impact of approving the request. it is a lesser pain to allow approve the request.

Government warns of mealie meal causing lung, liver damage, 400 dogs die after consuming

HEALTH Minister, Elijah Muchima has informed the nation of the recent Mpox outbreak in the country which has been detected to be caused by the presence of toxins in the maize meal which is being sold on the Zambian market and has been responsible for the death of about 400 dogs.

The contaminated mealie meal also strikes to be deadly to humans as it is capable of causing acute lung and liver damage, while the Mpox outbreak can also be contaminated through sexual contacts.

Recently, health investigations have proven that some maize which is on the market contains of toxin, Aflatoxin, which collapses the human lungs and destroys kidneys.

Despite that the revelation, government has not revealed the mealie meal brand, but however assured that the ministry has commenced investigation into the spread of the toxins which is believed to be on the Zambian Market already.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral zoonotic disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans and, in recent cases, between humans through close contact.

The disease typically begins with symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes, followed by a rash that evolves from blisters to dry crusts.

And on a positive note, the minister said Zambia has not recorded any cases of Monkeypox recently as samples from suspected cases have been tested, and all have returned as negative results.

“It is with great concern that I address the nation regarding the detection of harmful toxin levels in select maize meals. An alarming number of dogs have died in the past month. Mpox can result in severe illness, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems.”

“The case fatality rate for Mpox is three percent higher than that seen during the recent cholera outbreak. The virus is primarily spread through direct contact with bodily fluids, lesion material, or respiratory droplets during prolonged close contact,” the minister said.

He added that other forms of contamination include materials such as beddings and clothing.

“Sexual contact is another recently identified mode of transmission,” he said.

As prevention serves to be the most effective mode of avoiding Mpox, the minister said the Ministry of Health will launch a nationwide public awareness campaign to educate citizens about it, its symptoms, and preventive measures.

These activities will occur with a heightened surveillance and active case detection on all borders of the coutry.

To imply the seriousness of the Mpox outbreak which has been reported in most countries in the African region, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Mpox a global health emergency, and a public health continental significance.

*HON. MILES SAMPA’S ATTACK ON DR.DAVID NAMA FORMER ZNBS PAST CHAIRMAN.*

By Professor Edgar Ng’oma.

*Tuesday 20th August 2024*

_Without fear or favor._

I am compelled to respond to the unsubstantiated allegations made by Hon. Miles Sampa against Dr. David Nama. As a defender of good governance and good corporate governance and I in my capacity as distinguished governance fellow it is disheartening to see someone of Hon. Sampa’s stature resort to spreading falsehoods and engaging in rumor-mongering on an individual who has dedicated his time in corporate governance in this case Dr. David Nama.

As a respected leader, Hon. Sampa should be the last person to peddle untruths. His accusations against Dr. Nama, a renowned corporate governance expert, are not only baseless but also demeaning.

Dr. Nama’s distinguished career and achievements speak for themselves. He has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, turning around companies from loss-making to profitable entities. His expertise in corporate governance is unparalleled, with a proven track record of success in every organization he has led.

I have had the privilege of serving alongside Dr. Nama on the Zambia Bureau of Standards board, where he chaired the board and I was a member. Under his leadership, ZABS transformed from relying on government funding to becoming a profitable institution. By the end of our term, we left ZABS with ZMK18 million in its account.

Dr. Nama’s success story continued when he chaired the ZNBS board, turning it around from loss-making to profitability. By March 2024, he had recorded a profit of ZMK200 Million.

What’s more, Dr. Nama has served with distinction under five out of seven presidents, starting with President Mwanawasa and up to President Hichilema. His commitment to corporate governance and adherence to the rules of engagement have earned him respect across the political spectrum.

*MY ADVICE TO HON.MILES SAMPA MP.& LEADER OF THE LARGEST OPPOSITION POLITICAL PARTY IN ZAMBIA PATRIOTIC FRONT (PF)*

Dear Hon. Miles Sampa,

As a leader of an opposition party, it is crucial to remain focused on constructive and factual engagement. Your attention should be directed towards promoting good governance, accountability, and transparency. Instead of resorting to rumor-mongering and scandalizing credible citizens, I advise you to concentrate your energy on:

1. Developing and proposing alternative policies that benefit the nation.
2. Holding the ruling party accountable for their actions and decisions.
3. Engaging in constructive dialogue with stakeholders to find solutions to national challenges.
4. Fostering a culture of integrity, transparency, and accountability within your party.
5. Supporting and empowering citizens, rather than falsely accusing them.

Fact-finding and verification are essential before making public statements or accusations. This approach will help maintain your integrity and credibility as a leader.

In the case of Dr. David Nama, a renowned corporate governance expert, it is clear that your accusations were unfounded and damaging. I urge you to refrain from such behavior and instead focus on:

1. Recognizing and respecting the achievements and contributions of credible citizens like Dr. Nama.
2. Learning from their expertise and experiences to inform your policy decisions.
3. Collaborating with them to drive positive change and development in Zambia.

By adopting this approach, you will demonstrate leadership, integrity, and a commitment to the well-being of Zambian citizens. Remember, effective opposition leadership is about constructive engagement, not destructive rumor-mongering.
