DETENTION REFLECTIONS (DAY 3): I’LL KEEP EXPOSING HICHILEMA’S CORRUPTION – Fred M’membe

DETENTION REFLECTIONS (DAY 3): I’LL KEEP EXPOSING HICHILEMA’S CORRUPTION

My dear brothers and sisters, country men and women, greetings from inside Twin Palm police station cells!

Its over 30 years since the re-introduction of a multiparty political dispensation in Zambia. And throughout this period, we have been inside police and prison cells countless times because of taking a principled stance, fighting for justice and for upholding the truth.

We are not strangers to situations like the one we find ourselves in today. A greater part of our lives has been lived exactly this way. Virtually in all successive governments, we have had to sacrifice our freedom to speak the truth to power and for our people regardless of threats on our lives and resultant aftermaths. We have never been scared to be in prison or incarcerated at any point in our revolutionary journey. We have come a very long way to be bullied into submission by those with power. Our duty has always been to the country and its people.

Therefore, what Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his tandem of tribal crooks is doing by bringing us back here-inside police cells-is not something that can shake us nor our resolve to ensure that this country is free, is rid of corruption, ethnic bigotry and is taken to a place where we can proudly say it is being governed well. So, we want to remind Mr Hichilema, just in case he has forgotten or overlooked our background that aiming to silence us when we point out unrestrained corruption, embezzlement and primitive accumulation of wealth inside his cabal of thieves is not going to work. Mr Hichilema and his corrupt league will never break us. Bacepa sana!

Like the great revolutionary and global icon, Comrade Che Guevara said before his execution: “Shoot, you coward! You are only going to kill a man”. Therefore, our message to Mr Hichilema and those abusing power is that you may put us in prison as many times as you want; dehumanize, brutalize and humiliate us in all sorts of ways, but you won’t imprison or kill the ideas because these ideas are spreading like wildfire amongst our people across the country. So, imprisoning or killing a man does not kill the ideas. Ideas always have a way of reaching the targeted audience.

A third day in police cells mean nothing to one devoted to risk his own skin for the greater good of humanity. That is why for us, the Zambian people will always come first. Aleya!

Aluta continua!

Mayibuye Afrika!

Hichilema nowhere to hide over his corrupt ministers

By Daily Revelation Editor

State House has refuted President Hakainde Hichilema’s own words during his opposition days that he would not allow government officials who were under formal investigation to remain in office.

In a recent interview with Daily Revelation, President Hichilema’s spokesperson, chief communication specialist Clayson Hamasaka, instead claimed that Hichilema was referring to senior government leaders who were appearing before the courts of law and not those who were being investigated.

He said under former president Edgar Lungu, ministers like Dr Chitalu Chilufya and Ronald Chitotela were arrested and even appearing before the courts of law, while coming from their ministerial offices.

“And then people raised an alarm that in terms of even the court processes, and all those things, intimidation of witnesses it will be very hard if someone is coming in a ministerial vehicle with hordes of cadres. This you remember it very well. I think let’s put things into context around that,” said Hamasaka.

Clearly, this is why they say that it is not good to lie because lies by their very nature will need more lies to cover their steps. In his attempts to defend his boss, Hamasaka is now telling more lies, actually refusing the very words Hichilema uttered with his mouth or wrote with his own hands.

His supporters who have buried their heads in the sand, in their predictable foolishness are buying into the same Hamasaka argument that the President was referring to the people who were already under arrest and appearing before the courts of law. Total lies!

In one of his many statements castigating Lungu for keeping corrupt people in government, Hichilema on February 28, 2020 stated that: “Mr. Lungu must act decisively and do the following: 1. Suspend Dr. Chitalu Chilufya to allow for ACC investigations … These are decisions that we would have made today as they are matters of urgency.”

Clearly, in the above statement, Hichilema was not referring to people who were already under investigation, because there is no way one can ask for someone to be fired so that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) can investigate them, if they have already been arrested and appearing before the courts… https://dailyrevelationzambia.com/hichilema-nowhere-to-hide-over-his-corrupt-ministers/

THE HISTORY OF CHIBUKU BEER

THE HISTORY OF CHIBUKU BEER

Shared

Chibuku was the brainchild of a German man who did business in Kitwe. He was the man who actually built the original Nkana Hotel.

His name was Heinrich. Heinrich used to trade a lot in the African mining townships on the Copperbelt and realised that the miners who were all recruited from the villages all over the country and indeed even in Malawi and Tanzania all had one thing in common, a love for traditional beer brewed with millet, sorghum or maize.

He saw a business opportunity. He got some women to teach him how to brew traditional African beer and he then developed a process of brewing it in industrial quantities and hygienically. Today’s chibuku is fermented from sorghum malt and maize hops. Its taste is at its best after a couple of days of being brewed. The imbibers then say, “Ubwalwa nabukalipa” meaning the beer is strong. Direct translation would be,”The beer is angry😂”

He then made a deal with the mine township owners to open taverns in the townships where the beer was delivered in huge tankers and then dispensed in buckets.

He went even further when he noticed that business was only good at paydays. He went to the Mine township manager and set up a system where miners would write their names and mine numbers in a big ledger and at the month end the mines would deduct from the miners pay. A broke miner would say, “Mpeni ko ubwalwa , mulembe mu chu buku? (Please may I have a carton and write it in the big book?)

His beer began to be called ubwalwa bwamu chi buku. Heinrich and his workers began to call it Chi buku (Big Book.) His company Heinrich Syndicate grew and covered Zambia and Zimbabwe before it was bought out by Anglo American.

So all those Kenyans, Zimbabweans, Malawians, South Africa and Batswana trying to claim that Chibuku is their brand, it was born in Zambia. Chibuku is now marketed in East and West Africa and Botswana and South Africa.

FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION IS MODERATE BUT PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE – CHIEF JUSTICE

FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION IS MODERATE BUT PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE – CHIEF JUSTICE

CHIEF justice Mumba Malila says the fight against corruption is average hence there is need to improve the approach in combating graft.

Responding to questions from journalists during a media interaction  yesterday, Justice Malila said there has been progression in tackling corruption but more needs to be built on.

“Am I happy with the corruption fight? It is a very difficult question but the only thing I can say is that there is quite a lot of scope for improvement. A lot of progress has been made but there is quite a lot of scope for improvement,”said justice Malila.

“In other words, I think there’s a lot of things that we can do differently and which we can do better I think. But for now, suffice it to say that some things have happened well, others have not happened well…without getting into specifics.”

Deputy Chief Justice Micheal Musonda who chipped in to help his boss said it was not the role of the chief justice to secure convictions as Courts only await for offenders to be presented before them and work with the evidence availed to them.

“The courts wait, they wait for people to bring those that offend against the law. So, the courts have to do what they have to do. They are not the prosecutors, they don’t bring the evidence,”he said.

“So, the police will arrest those who offend against the law, secure the conviction because all that the court has is the law. The judge or the magistrate only knows the law. The relevant fact to fit in the law to secure a particular outcome is the role of those that prosecute.”

Justice Musonda said the chief justice has to ensure that justice is served fairly and that is what should make him happy.

“So, the role of the court is the passing one. You wait for people to come and having come before the courts, these people who come before the courts must do what it takes to secure convictions. Otherwise, the law says, if there is a doubt to the guilt of someone, it is an obligation for a magistrate or a judge to acquit,” he said

“The chief justice has to be happy to see that justice has been served. When there is an acquittal, justice has been served and so it is when there is a conviction against the person who faced the relevant evidence and was properly prosecuted. So, these are the limitations. It is not about the disposition of the judiciary or the chief justice, no!”

He said the chief justice has not personal interest in institutional interest to see to it that people are jailed.

“(When) the State has got issues, they come before the courts. Those with grievances, we must prosecute in order to secure an outcome they deserve. If it is what they want to be achieved doesn’t meet the standard given by the work done by the courts, the hands of the judge or magistrate are tied,” he said

“The chief justice deals with these matters with a sense of detachment because he is not involved. His role and those of the judges is limited.”

Justice Musonda said investigative wings and the prosecution must put in effort in their work to achieve their intended goal.

“In ensuring that those who’ve run foul of the law are convicted. So the people who have to secure the conviction are those pointing the finger of accusation what happens if they poorly investigate? Then what do you do? If you poorly prosecute the Court’s role is limited,”said justice Musonda.

“We have heard from the executive to say take matters to court where you are hundred percent sure though you can’t tell whether you are hundred percent what more for the court if they haven’t met the standards? That’s the way it works in any civilized country.”

Mali orders Swedish ambassador to leave within 72 hours

Sweden’s ambassador to Bamako has been summoned and ordered to leave the country within 72 hours because of a “hostile” statement by a Swedish minister, Mali’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says.

Mali’s move on Friday came days after Sweden’s minister for international development cooperation and trade, Johan Forssell, said the government had decided to phase out aid to Mali.

“You cannot support Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine and at the same time receive several hundred million crowns each year in development aid,” Forssell said on Wednesday, commenting on a post on X which said Mali was cutting ties with Ukraine.

The diplomatic spat underscores the broader geopolitical shift unfolding in the Sahel region as three military-led states – Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger – pivot away from traditional Western allies towards Russia.

In June, due to the deteriorating security situation in Mali, Sweden announced the closure of its embassy in Bamako by the end of 2024 and said Stockholm would continue supporting the region from Dakar, Senegal.

Mali has been plagued by unrest driven by armed groups, making parts of the country ungovernable. The West African nation’s military seized power in a 2020 coup and has made it a priority to re-gain control over the entire country from separatists and hardline groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS).

While Sweden had deployed soldiers to the region in 2022 as part of a United Nations peacekeeping mission, Stockholm said it would pull its 220 soldiers out of the mission in Mali.

“In recent times, conditions have changed in the country, but until our last soldier is home, we continue to conduct operations just as usual,” the Swedish armed forces said at that time.

Other European nations, including France, completed their withdrawals of troops from Mali in 2022.

Since then, Mali has moved closer to Russia, and the Wagner mercenary group has been operating in the country since late 2021, replacing French troops and international peacekeepers.

In July, the military leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger signed a new defence cooperation pact, hailing it as a step “towards greater integration”.

Colonel Assimi Goita, Mali’s military leader, said the strengthened relationship means an “attack on one of us will be an attack on all the other members”.

It remains unclear if the new approach has helped stem the violence that has plagued the country.

Begging for Survival: How Chakwera’s Dependency on Foreign Aid is Suffocating Malawi’s Economy

By Twink Jones Gadama

Malawi, once a beacon of self-reliance and economic growth under the leadership of former presidents Bingu wa Mutharika and Peter Mutharika, has taken a drastic turn for the worse under President Lazarus Chakwera.

Chakwera’s administration has embraced a culture of begging, prioritizing foreign aid over innovation and hard work.

This approach has suffocated Malawi’s economy, bred laziness, and stifled national development.

The recent revelation by Vice President Michael Usi, also known as Manganya, that he was appointed due to his expertise in begging from Western countries, has sparked outrage and concern.

Usi’s admission, which Chakwera has failed to dispute, exposes the president’s alarming dependence on foreign handouts.

This stance is unprecedented, making Chakwera the only president globally who openly advocates for begging as a national strategy.

Under Bingu wa Mutharika and Peter Mutharika’s leadership, Malawi achieved remarkable GDP growth, maintained a zero-deficit budget, and fostered self-reliance.

In contrast, Chakwera’s administration has reversed these gains, plunging Malawi into economic turmoil.

The president’s failure to drive the nation toward prosperity and self-reliance raises questions about his vision and leadership.

Chakwera’s begging culture has far-reaching consequences, including stifling innovation, breeding laziness, undermining national pride, and hindering economic growth.

Furthermore, foreign aid creates a false sense of security, distracting from the need to develop sustainable economic strategies, which hinders Malawi’s ability to achieve long-term economic growth and stability.

Moreover, the reliance on foreign aid can lead to corruption, as funds may be mismanaged or embezzled, undermining trust in government and institutions.

Foreign aid can also lead to an influx of foreign goods and services, undermining local industries and entrepreneurs, and creating a culture of dependency, making it challenging for Malawi to wean itself off handouts.

Additionally, the focus on foreign aid diverts attention from domestic revenue mobilization, neglecting critical tax reforms and revenue collection efforts.

Begging strips citizens of their agency, reducing them to recipients of aid rather than empowered contributors to their nation’s development.

Excessive reliance on foreign aid can also compromise Malawi’s sovereignty, as the country becomes beholden to donor interests rather than its own development goals.

Furthermore, the begging culture perpetuated by Chakwera’s administration has led to a lack of accountability and transparency in the management of foreign aid.

Funds are often misallocated, and projects are not properly monitored, leading to waste and inefficiency.

This lack of accountability also undermines trust in government and institutions, making it challenging to attract investment and promote economic growth.

Moreover, the reliance on foreign aid has stifled innovation and entrepreneurship in Malawi.

With a constant influx of handouts, there is little incentive to develop innovative solutions to the country’s challenges.

This has led to a lack of investment in critical sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and technology, hindering Malawi’s ability to diversify its economy and achieve sustainable growth.

Additionally, the begging culture has eroded Malawi’s national pride and sovereignty.

By constantly relying on foreign handouts, the country has become beholden to donor interests rather than its own development goals.

This has led to a loss of autonomy and self-determination, making it challenging for Malawi to pursue its own development agenda.

In contrast, countries that have prioritized self-reliance and innovation have achieved remarkable economic growth and development.

For example, countries like Singapore and South Korea have invested heavily in education, technology, and entrepreneurship, enabling them to become major players in the global economy.

Here are three African countries that have made significant strides in reducing their reliance on foreign aid and are worthy of emulation:

Rwanda
Rwanda has made remarkable progress in recent years, transforming itself from a recipient of foreign aid to a self-sufficient nation.

Under the leadership of President Paul Kagame, Rwanda has prioritized innovation, entrepreneurship, and domestic revenue mobilization.

The country has invested heavily in education, technology, and infrastructure, making it an attractive destination for foreign investment.

Rwanda’s success can be attributed to its visionary leadership, strategic planning, and commitment to self-reliance.

The country has established a robust tax system, reducing its reliance on foreign aid from 80% to 20% of its budget.

Rwanda’s focus on innovation and entrepreneurship has also led to the growth of a thriving private sector, creating jobs and driving economic growth.

Botswana
Botswana is another African country that has successfully reduced its reliance on foreign aid.

The country has invested heavily in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, making it one of the most stable and prosperous nations in Africa.

Botswana’s economy is driven by its vibrant private sector, with a strong focus on entrepreneurship and innovation.

Botswana’s success can be attributed to its prudent economic management, strategic planning, and commitment to self-reliance.

The country has established a robust tax system, and its leadership has prioritized domestic revenue mobilization over foreign aid.

Botswana’s focus on innovation and entrepreneurship has also led to the growth of a thriving diamond industry, making it one of the world’s leading diamond producers.

Ghana
Ghana is a shining example of an African country that has made significant strides in reducing its reliance on foreign aid.

Under the leadership of President Nana Akufo-Addo, Ghana has prioritized innovation, entrepreneurship, and domestic revenue mobilization.

The country has invested heavily in education, technology, and infrastructure, making it an attractive destination for foreign investment.

Ghana’s success can be attributed to its visionary leadership, strategic planning, and commitment to self-reliance.

The country has established a robust tax system, reducing its reliance on foreign aid from 50% to 20% of its budget.

Ghana’s focus on innovation and entrepreneurship has also led to the growth of a thriving private sector, creating jobs and driving economic growth.

Malawians don’t need a begging president, as that breeds laziness, undermines national pride, and stifles innovation.

A president who constantly begs for foreign aid creates a culture of dependency, making citizens reliant on handouts rather than their own hard work and ingenuity.

This approach also erodes trust in government and institutions, as citizens become disillusioned with the lack of progress and development.

Moreover, a begging president sends a negative message to the international community, portraying Malawi as a helpless nation unable to take care of its own affairs.

This perpetuates a cycle of poverty and underdevelopment, as investors and partners are deterred by the lack of vision and self-reliance.

In contrast, a president who prioritizes self-reliance, innovation, and entrepreneurship inspires citizens to take ownership of their development.

By investing in education, technology, and infrastructure, a president can create an environment conducive to growth and prosperity.

This approach fosters a sense of national pride, as citizens become empowered to contribute to their nation’s progress.

Malawians deserve a president who embodies the spirit of self-reliance and innovation.

A president who can harness the country’s vast resources, talents, and potential to drive growth and development.

A president who can inspire citizens to work together towards a common goal, rather than relying on foreign handouts.

By embracing self-reliance and innovation, Malawi can break the cycle of poverty and underdevelopment.

The country can become a beacon of hope and prosperity in Africa, where citizens are empowered to drive their own development and create a brighter future for themselves and their children.

In conclusion, Malawians have had enough of President Chakwera’s begging culture, which has stifled innovation, bred laziness, and undermined national pride.

They yearn for a leader who embodies the spirit of self-reliance and innovation, a leader who can harness the country’s vast resources and talents to drive growth and development.

That leader is Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, who during his tenure, never preached begging and instead focused on developing Malawi’s economy through innovative policies and projects.

Malawians remember his leadership with nostalgia, and many believe that he is the only one who can restore the country’s lost glory.

With his vast experience and proven track record, Professor Mutharika is better equipped to lead Malawi than President Chakwera.

He has a deep understanding of the country’s challenges and opportunities, and he knows what it takes to drive sustainable economic growth and development.

Malawians are eager to give Professor Mutharika another chance to lead the country, and they are confident that he will not disappoint.

Under his leadership, Malawi will once again become a beacon of hope and prosperity in Africa, where citizens are empowered to drive their own development and create a brighter future for themselves and their children.

The time has come for Malawi to move away from the begging culture and embrace a new era of self-reliance and innovation.

The time has come for Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to take the reins and lead Malawi to its rightful place among the prosperous nations of Africa.

Carsley appointed interim England manager

0

Lee Carsley has been appointed as the interim manager for England’s upcoming Nations League fixtures as the Football Association (FA) continues its search for a permanent successor to Gareth Southgate.

Carsley, who is transitioning from his role as England Under-21 manager, will lead the senior team in September. This move follows Southgate’s resignation, which came two days after England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final last month.

“Given my familiarity with the players and the international football calendar, it’s logical for me to step in while the FA completes its search for a new manager,” Carsley stated.

“My primary focus is on maintaining continuity and our objective is to achieve promotion in the UEFA Nations League.”

The 50-year-old Carsley enjoyed a distinguished career as a Premier League midfielder with clubs such as Derby and Everton. After transitioning into management, he had stints with Coventry, Brentford, and Birmingham as a caretaker. He took charge of England Under-20s in 2020 and later became the England Under-21 manager, leading the team to victory in the European Championship in 2023, their first title in 39 years.

England’s upcoming fixtures include a match against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on September 7, followed by a home game against Finland three days later. Carsley, who earned 40 caps for the Republic of Ireland during his playing career, is set to manage these games.

The FA has indicated that Carsley will oversee the team for these matches and possibly through the autumn, while the search for a new permanent head coach continues. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham expressed confidence in Carsley’s capabilities.

“Lee is a highly respected coach who is well-acquainted with most of our current senior squad from his previous roles,” Bullingham said. “He represents a strong interim solution, and we trust he will manage the Nations League games effectively.”

Carsley follows in the footsteps of Howard Wilkinson, Stuart Pearce, and Southgate, who all transitioned from managing youth teams to leading the senior squad. Southgate, who initially took on the role on an interim basis, secured the position permanently and led England through significant tournaments, including World Cup semi-finals and Euros finals.

The FA has posted a job advertisement for the permanent role and will proceed with its recruitment process. Meanwhile, Ben Futcher will assume the role of England Under-21 manager, with details of the respective backroom teams to be announced.

10 famous African-Americans who made history you should know

0

Many African Americans have contributed their quota to world history. Their efforts helped to shape the world and made it a better place.

These personalities have been celebrated and are still being celebrated today, and must continue to be celebrated for generations to come. They were bold and fearless. They broke barriers, and made it possible for Black people to have many of the freedoms that we enjoy today. Advocating for justice and inspiring future generations were their hallmarks.

From Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, to Frederick Douglass, Barack Obama and others , these heroic figures are worth knowing for the history they made and their selfless contributions to society which impacted the black race and humanity at large.

Below, meet 10 of these heroes that you should know:

Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. was famous through the American Civil Rights Movement. His eloquence and commitment to nonviolent resistance brought change during intense racial segregation. Martin’s “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered during the 1963 March on Washington, has been tagged as one of the most iconic addresses in American history.

His leadership in campaigns such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Selma to Montgomery marches laid the groundwork for significant legislative changes, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a landmark legislation that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which further solidified these gains by prohibiting racial discrimination in voting.

Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman has a very touching story. From enslavement, she became a leading figure in the Underground Railroad and that was a testament to her courage and determination. Tubman made numerous trips to the South to lead enslaved individuals to freedom which earned her the nickname “Moses.”

Her efforts went beyond the Underground Railroad; she also served as a spy and nurse during the Civil War and advocated for women’s suffrage, leaving a lasting legacy as a freedom fighter.

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks became a household name after she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery bus in 1955 – and this was a pivotal moment in the fight against segregation.

Her non-compliance sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a 381-day protest that led to a Supreme Court decision declaring segregation on public buses unconstitutional.

Frederick Douglass

One of the most powerful voices in the abolitionist movement was Frederick Douglass. He was relentless and worked hard to achieve this feat despite being born into slavery.

His autobiographies, including “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave,” detailed his experiences and the brutal realities of slavery, galvanizing public opinion against the institution.

Douglass was also a staunch advocate for women’s rights and held several public offices, including U.S. Minister to Haiti.

Malcolm X

Malcolm X was a prominent figure in the Nation of Islam and a vocal advocate for Black empowerment and self-defense. He was able to challenge the status quo and encouraged African Americans to take pride in their heritage and fight against oppression through his speeches and writings.

After leaving the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X embraced a more inclusive view of racial unity. Unfortunately, his assassination in 1965 cut short a transformative journey that continues to influence civil rights discourse.

Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth, a revered woman, was very passionate about women’s rights. The famous African American abolitionist is best known for her speech, “Ain’t I a Woman?” at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in 1851.

Born into slavery, Truth escaped with her infant daughter and became a powerful speaker. She advocated for the rights of African Americans and women. Her life and work highlight the intersectionality of race and gender in the fight for equality.

W.E.B. Du Bois

Apart from being the co-founder of the NAACP, W.E.B. Du Bois, a pioneering sociologist, historian, and civil rights activist became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University and used his academic expertise to advocate for civil rights and social justice.

Du Bois’ seminal work, “The Souls of Black Folk,” explored the complexities of African American identity and the impact of racism, influencing future generations of scholars and activists.

Jackie Robinson

If you are a Baseball fan, you will love to read about the history that Jackie Robinson made. He broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball in 1947 after he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers.

His courage and talent challenged the pervasive segregation in professional sports and paved the way for future athletes of color. Aside from Robinson’s baseball diamond impact, he was an outspoken advocate for civil rights and economic justice. Jackie Robinson used his platform to promote equality.

Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou‘s rich work spans poetry, autobiography, and civil rights activism. Her autobiography, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” chronicles her early life and the struggles she faced with racism and trauma.

Angelou’s eloquent prose and powerful voice made her a celebrated literary figure and a key figure in the civil rights movement. She collaborated with leaders and African American history makers like Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

Barack Obama

In 2008, Barack Obama made history after he was elected as the first African American president of the United States. His presidency marked a new chapter in American politics, focusing on healthcare reform, economic recovery, and social justice.

Mozambique ex-minister guilty of one of Africa’s biggest corruption scandals

0

A US court has convicted a Mozambican former finance minister over a 10-year-old conspiracy that triggered the worst economic crisis in his home country since independence.

Manuel Chang was found guilty of accepting pay-offs through US banks for approving secret loans.

The loans were intended to pay for a fleet of tuna fishing ships and other projects, leading to the affair being dubbed the “tuna bond” scandal.
But the loans were plundered, leaving Mozambique $2bn (£1.5bn) in debt.

Chang was arrested in South Africa in 2018, and extradited to the US the following year to face fraud and money-laundering charges.
The Mozambican authorities had wanted Chang to be sent back to be tried on home soil, instead of in the US.

He will be sentenced later, potentially facing 20 years in prison. Chang had denied the charges and his lawyers say he plans to appeal the verdict.
Analysts say it is one of the biggest corruption cases seen on the African continent.

Ten other people have been imprisoned in Mozambique over the scandal, including the son of then-President Armando Guebuza.
The loans were issued by Credit Suisse and the Russian bank VTB and guaranteed by the Mozambican government.

But some of these loans were not disclosed and were signed off by Chang during his term as finance minister between 2005 and 2015.

The court in New York heard that Chang had pocketed $7m in bribes from the shipbuilding firm Privinvest, but his lawyer said there was no evidence Chang had received “a single penny” and said the projects were approved former President Guebuza and other ministers.

But in her closing arguments on Monday, the prosecuting assistant US attorney Genny Ngai said Chang had personally “signed all of the loan guarantees… and he was critical to the loans being approved”.

“He cared about money over his position,” she told the court.

Previously, three former Credit Suisse bankers pleaded guilty to US charges of money laundering over the “tuna bond” case. In late 2021, UK authorities fined the investment bank $178m over the scandal.

The fine was part of a $475m settlement with UK, Swiss and US regulators.
As a result of the fraudulent deal, “a couple of million people were thrown into poverty” and “several billion dollars [was] knocked off economic growth,” Richard Messick, who writes the Global Anti-Corruption Blog, told the BBC.

Missing funds to the tune of £500m were siphoned off, according to an independent audit that was ordered by the International Monetary Fund who later withdrew their support from Mozambique. It is still not known what happened to that money.

Mozambique is rich in natural resources – thanks to large offshore gas reserves, ruby mines and more. Its economy has grown steadily in recent years but it still ranks as one of the poorer nations on the African continent.

In a statement on Thursday, the US attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Breon Peace, said: “Today’s verdict is an inspiring victory for justice and the people of Mozambique who were betrayed by the defendant, a corrupt, high-ranking government official whose greed and self-interest sold out one of the poorest countries in the world.”

UN mission in Congo could stay beyond December

0

The UN Security Council this week authorised the peacekeeping forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo to aid the ground forces in pacifying the restive eastern parts of the country, in what could prolong the mission’s mandate beyond the December 2024 exit timeline.

Known by the French acronym Monusco, the mission will be required to provide aerial support to the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC), which has been battling rebels in the east.

The resolution was adopted on August 6, and Monusco said it signalled “the international community’s commitment to support security and stabilisation efforts in the DRC.”

“Under the terms of this resolution, Monusco is mandated to provide assistance to SAMIDRC, in particular through improved coordination, information sharing, and technical and logistical support, with the aim of strengthening SAMIDRC’s capabilities, while ensuring compliance with international standards of international humanitarian law and human rights,” said a press release from the UN mission.

Its support for SAMIDRC should be without prejudice to the UN mission’s existing mandate, including the protection of civilians, support for the Luanda Process and the strengthened ad hoc verification mechanism, and support for the national security forces, said Monusco in the press release.

The adoption of Resolution 2746 comes at a time when Kinshasa has opened talks with the UN to reconsider the plan to draw down from the DRC.

On July 29, Thérèse Kayikwamba, DRC Minister for Foreign Affairs, met with Bruno Lemarquis, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in DRC, to discuss the implementation of the disengagement plan and the closure of Monusco offices in the province of South Kivu, where a number of analysts, including Mr Lemarquis himself, fear a “security vacuum” after the withdrawal of the UN mission.

As for the province of North Kivu, where the UN mission was supposed to begin its gradual withdrawal, the authorities in Kinshasa wish to delay this departure due to an escalation of violent clashes between the M23 rebels and the Congolese army.

“We talked about the next stage in the planning process, since Congo has declared that the conditions are not ripe to start disengaging from the other provinces, particularly North Kivu. Nonetheless, we need to plan ahead and be ready as soon as possible,” Mr Lemarquis said.

The SADC mission should therefore benefit from Monusco’s expertise and experience, particularly in protecting human rights and international law, which the SAMIDRC has put in place to avoid civilian casualties.

Monusco says it is encouraging the parties to the conflict in the DRC to respect their commitments to peace, in particular the ceasefire, which has been in force in theory since August 4.

“Monusco is called upon to provide expertise on the protection of civilians, including women, girls and children, and on the prevention of conflict-related sexual violence. The mission will have to make its air and logistical assets available for medical operations and evacuation of the wounded, while facilitating the movement of SAMIDRC troops and preserving the safety of its personnel.”

US based Zimbabwean woman found guilty of US$1.2m romance scam

A Zimbabwean woman based in the United States (US), Sherlyn Sims, also known as “Sherlyn Dzinzi,” has been found guilty of conspiring to launder proceeds from romance fraud scams and business email compromise schemes.

The jury delivered the verdict on Tuesday after a five-day trial.

According to the charges and evidence presented in court, Sims and her co-defendants registered sham businesses, opened bank accounts, and received over US$1.2 million in fraud proceeds between December 2019 and August 2020. The funds were quickly transferred, withdrawn, and spent.

Multiple romance fraud victims testified at trial, recounting how they were tricked into sending money to Sims’ accounts. One victim was persuaded to send nearly US$100,000 to help a man she met online, who claimed to be detained by customs officials.

According to a statement issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Georgia, Sims and her co-defendants registered sham businesses, including Grace Trading, LLC, a company Sims registered in the state of Georgia.

Grace Trading and the other sham businesses had no legitimate earnings, did not have physical premises, and did not pay wages to employees.

“Once the businesses were registered, business bank accounts were opened in the companies’ names at various financial institutions.

“For instance, two days after Grace Trading became registered with the Georgia Secretary of State, Sims opened business bank accounts at J.P. Morgan Chase Bank and Bank of America.

“Shortly after the accounts were opened, fraud victims were duped into depositing approximately US$200,000 into Grace Trading’s bank accounts.

“Sims quickly wired the fraud proceeds to China and other foreign countries, withdrew cash from the accounts, and transferred or spent the remaining funds.

“Over the following seven months, more than US$1.2 million in fraud proceeds were deposited into these accounts from romance scams and business email compromise schemes.

“One of the incidents involved a scam that tricked a victim into sending the earnest money deposit for the purchase of a new home to Sims’s Grace Trading account.

“Sims was not deterred when the banks closed Grace Trading’s accounts, as she would open a new bank account in the sham business’s name. Sims also used Grace Trading to obtain a fraudulent COVID-loan from the Small Business Administration,” read the statement.

Sims is scheduled to be sentenced on November 5, 2024, alongside co-defendants Bright Eigbedion and Presley Ihimekpen, who have also been convicted of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, part of the Department of Justice Transnational Elder Fraud Strike Force.

U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan stated, “The fraud schemes that Sims perpetrated in this case have become an epidemic in this country.”

He added: “Our vulnerable elderly population are often targeted in these crimes, resulting in significant financial loss and unimaginable emotional suffering.

“The jury’s verdict has ended Sims’s attempts to evade culpability for the role that she played in carrying out these schemes.”

FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Keri Farley said the case highlights the sophisticated methods used by criminals in digital fraud schemes.

“This case serves as a reminder of the sophisticated methods employed by criminals and the need for vigilance in the digital age,” Farley said.

“The consequences of this type of fraud scheme are far-reaching, affecting not only people here in Georgia, but also around the world.”

Zim catholic church condemns crackdown on activists ahead of SADC summit

0

The Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ZCBC) has condemned the ongoing government crackdown on political activists aimed at quelling possible demonstrations ahead of the 44th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State Summit to be held in Harare.

With the summit set to be held on the 17th of August, the Zimbabwean government is afraid of being embarrassed by possible protests that are allegedly being planned by opposition activists.

Against this background, law enforcement agents have arrested more than 100 activists, including students. They are being accused of plotting demonstrations.

Former Cabinet Minister Jameson Timba and 74 members of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) faction he leads are currently detained on charges of holding an unsanctioned political gathering.

Pro-democracy campaigners Namatai Kwekweza, Robson Chere, and two others are also seeking bail after being arrested at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport last week.

They were allegedly abducted from a plane detained at a hidden place and tortured for eight hours before being formally slapped with “frivolous” charges.

In a statement on Friday, ZCBC condemned the strategy that the government employed against its critics. The church has urged the regime to consider dialogue as a way of resolving grievances.

“As the Catholic Bishops, we are worried and saddened that to silence the dissenting voices and to quell possible demonstrations, violence, torture, and abductions seem to be the only options deployed,” ZCBC said.

“Why not try dialogue with those who feel aggrieved by the present state of our country?

“As Zimbabweans, we are people with a culture of tolerance, and we value diversity. Let this be seen in how we conduct our businesses and how we articulate our grievances.

“We appeal to all concerned, to exercise their rights responsibly and to the government we call for restraint. The prevailing situation in the country does no one any good.”

The church further condemned the arbitrary arrests of activists and the subsequent denial of bail by the Zimbabwean courts.

“Recently, we have seen the wanton arrests of citizens under frivolous charges. Some of the arrested have been denied bail. Surely, even those who ‘have committed crimes’ deserve to be treated in a just manner.

“They can not be denied their fundamental rights. Here, the adage, ‘justice delayed is justice denied,’ rings true. Let us safeguard the human rights enshrined in our Constitution.

“As we once appealed before the August 2023 elections, we urge our politicians again and those in government to exercise their duties responsibly,” ZCBC said.

Meanwhile, during a press briefing at the party’s headquarters on Thursday, ruling Zanu-PF party spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa warned the opposition against staging demonstrations during the summit saying, “Let them not play with fire”.

I demand the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. M’membe- Edgar Lungu

Good evening fellow Zambians.

Yesterday, we learnt with a heavy heart, the unfair arrest of Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M´membe who was subsequently charged with sedition by state police. Given the fact that the offence is bondable under Zambian laws, we anticipated a swift release of the opposition leader after the charge but alas, Dr. M´membe has remained in detention away from his wife and children as we speak.

We are concerned that officers overseeing the case are reported to have ´evaporated into thin air’, making it impossible for his lawyers to secure bond for Dr. M´membe this afternoon.

This is a clear gross abuse of due process of the law and must not be condoned in a democratic country like Zambia that respects the rule of law.

The continued detention of a citizen who is entitled to police bond is a gross violation of the fundamental rights as enshrined in our constitution these public servants including the Republican President swear to uphold. Time will come when police officers abusing the law in the notorious name of punitive politics will be made to account and pay in their personal capacity and many will regret in heavy tears. There is time for everything!

On behalf of the Patriotic Front and indeed many Zambians, I demand the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. M’membe in accordance with our national laws. This political oppression, persecution and police brutality which is escalating under the New Dawn Government is ´off-side in football terms´ and must end.

Let´s pray for Dr. M’membe and others such as Hon. Ronald Chitotela-PF MP, Hon Nickson Chilangwa-PF MP, Madam Saboi Imboela- NDC leaders, Hon. JJ Banda Petauke MP, including artiste Jackson Chama aka ´Why Me´ who has been in detention Kalomo for five months now to be given justice. My heart bleeds for these our dear friends and citizens.

Colleagues, it is our national duty to support and offer solidarity to all Zambians under state persecution. I pray President Hakainde Hichilema appreciates and reciprocates this gesture as a personal beneficiary of our political grace, brotherly love and human heart for fellow citizens in past times.

It is hard for our friends in detention and their dear families, I personally can attest to this. Colleagues in detention, we are with you, please stay strong and pray to God because it is always dark before sunrise!

God bless you.

…..says UPND Government is focused on punishing individuals

Lusaka… Friday, August 9, 2024

The United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) has expressed concern that criticizing the President has become a crime under the UPND Government.

This follows the detention of Socialist Party President Dr Fred M’membe for alleged seditious practices.

Last month, DR M’membe posted on his social media platforms an article titled “Tshisekedi tells DRC Catholic Bishops about the USD 20 Million Pay-out to buy Zambia’s silence” in which he raised corruption alarm and volunteered to offer evidence.

Zambian authorities are of the view that raising corruption issues are tantamount to posting content intended to bring hatred or contempt against the government.

UKA Deputy National Chairperson Chishala Kateka stated, “Sedition is something these people have misinterpreted to be criticizing their demi-god.”

Speaking from Twin Palm Police where Dr M’membe  is detained, Ms Kateka said the Socialist Party Leader merely raised important issues and clearly stated that he has got evidence.

She questioned why the police arrested him instead of asking for evidence.

Ms Kateka said criticizing the President should not be a crime in a democracy.

“For them, as long as you criticize the President, you are committing a crime. That works in a dictatorial system, but in Zambia, we are a democracy, and the opposition raises issues. That is what Dr. M’membe did. He raised issues, he said he has evidence.  Why can’t you ask for evidence rather than putting him in cells,” she said.

And Ms Kateka has charged  that Zambia has degenerated into a police state. She said the current government  is focused on punishing individuals.

Ms Kateka said such is not the leadership the Zambian people voted for.

“Today it might be Dr M’Membe, tomorrow it will be me or you. Now, there are some misunformed citizens who are happy with what they are seeing and thinking that it is okay for politicians to be put in cells, but they are going to come for you as citizens. It is not just about politicians,” she said.

PROPHET-CUM-DIPLOMAT STEPS FOOT ON ZAMBIAN SOIL

By Muvi Reporter

Controversial Prophet, Uebert Angel has stepped on Zambian soil, seven years after he was denied entry into the country.

On 4th May 2017, the flamboyant Zimbabwean Prophet, who is also founder of a Pentecostal ministry called Spirit Embassy, was denied entry into Zambia by immigration authorities.

The 45-year-old who real name is Uebert Mudzanire was travelling from the United Kingdom in the company of his wife and two others, aboard an Emirates flight.

After arriving at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport at around 15:00 hours, he and his entourage were refused entry and subsequently made to return to the UK on the same plane.

He was scheduled to have a Crusade as well as a “Millionaire Academy” meeting, where people were charged K2, 000 to attend.

Then Republican President, Edgar Lungu explained that he had the right to protect and defend Zambia’s values even if it meant denying any person entry into the country.

He stressed that Zambia, as a sovereign state, had the right to decide who comes and goes out of the country.

Prophet Uebert Angel is known for his prophecy, miracles and claims to have the power to heal.

Then Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs, Godfridah Sumaili announced that Government would not allow the so-called Men of God with dubious practices or unknown intentions to come and ply their prophetic trade in Zambia.

She said government was concerned that the evangelical, prophetic and pentecostal movements had been infiltrated by magicians, charlatans and false prophets.

This angered many of his followers, including Malawian Prophet, Shepherd Bushiri of Enlightened Christian Gathering, who calls himself the spiritual son of Uebert Angel.

Prophet Bushiri accused two prominent Zambian Bishops, Joe Imakando and Joshua Banda, of using Zambian authorities to persecute Men of God both within and outside the Country.

However, Government stood firm and did not allow the Prophet-cum-Diplomat to enter the Country.

Seven years later, Prophet Uebert Angel is set to host a Crusade at Show Grounds arena in Lusaka on Saturday, 10th August, 2024.

He arrived on Tuesday, 6th August, 2024, and unconfirmed reports have indicated that a “Millionaire Academy” meeting has been set for 12th August, 2024.

TORN BILL OF DIVORCEMENT WAS WRITTEN BY THE LATE SHIKAPWASHA – HANDWRITING EXPERT

TORN BILL OF DIVORCEMENT WAS WRITTEN BY THE LATE SHIKAPWASHA – HANDWRITING EXPERT

THE revelations by the late Ronald Shikapwasha’s daughter Vanessa that her father had divorced his wife of many years Jane Lusengo prior to his death, were yesterday validated by a handwriting expert who proved that the handwriting on the Bill of divorcement which Lusengo is alleged to have shredded belonged to general Shikapwasha.

A Bill of divorcement is a certificate of divorce written by a man, which he gives to his wife to dissolve their marriage upon discovering that she is adulterous.

In this case 73 year-old Jane Lusengo is on trial in the High Court for the alleged murder of her husband.

Lusengo is accused of ending the former ZAF commander’s life with a double barrel shotgun on January 15, 2024.

In her testimony Vanessa narrated that she learnt that her father had signed a Bill of Divorcement freeing her mother owing to extra-marital affairs.

She said that after the shooting incident whilst she and her aunt were praying, petitioning God to save her fathers life, she saw Lusengo tearing papers from a diary which she had retrieved under her mattress at the foot of the bed and through them in the kitchen bin.

Vanessa said she asked her step sister Milika to pick up the papers from the bin and keep them safe so that they would be handed over to the police.

In his testimony before judge Conceptor Zulu,
David Zulu a senior superintendent and forensic handwriting expert corroborated the evidence by Vanessa regarding the Bill of divorcement.

He said on January 22, 2024 he received specimen samples one set was classified as questionable documents the other was a nine paged bill of divorcements bearing handwritings and a signature on page nine.

“ I received torn pieces of paper in a black plastic also bearing handwriting and a signature . I had to re-arrange the torn pieces of paper so that they could be readable and put them in a transparent sheet,” Zulu said.

“Accompanying these documents were request handwriting and signature samples marked under the name Jane Lusengo. The third were random or course of business samples or previous writing these were marked in the following persons name.”

He said other course of business samples were note books marked in the name of Ronald Shikapwasha.

Zulu said the note books and diaries belonging to the couple were submitted to the forensic sciences laboratory to ascertain whether or not, any of the two could have written or signed on the ninth page of the Bill of divorcement in question or the tron pieces of paper bearing a handwriting and a signature.

“I examined these documents physically and under comparison microscope where I effected a side by side analysis between the handwriting as well as signature on the bill of divorcement and torn pieces of paper against the provided handwriting and signature samples marked under Jane Lusengo and Ronald Shikapwasha,” Zulu said .

“After a thorough analysis I observed dissimilarities between the handwriting and signatures obtaining on the disputed documents against the provided specimen handwriting or signature samples marked under Jane Lusengo’s names.”

He said the handwriting on the pice of paper was similar to one Shikapwasha’s diaries.

“I observed strong similarities between the handwriting aswel as the signatures obtaining on the two documents in question against the in provided handwriting and signature specimen samples marked under the name Ronald Shikapwasha ,” said Zulu

Lusengo’s lawyer Gilbert Pindani opposed to the production of the diaries to form part of Zulu’s evidence.

Pindani said Zulu has proved he’s an expert witness as he did not file his credentials to prove that he is an expert.

“The status of an expert witness is that of high caliber and knowledge on the subject which must be demonstrated through these educational credentials,” he said.

“It is our prayer that the objection be sustained for lack of demonstration that this witness is indeed an expert.”

Deputy chief State advocate Chipola Bako asked for more time to respond.

Judge Zulu as the parties to file written submissions due to time and adjourned the case to August 26 at 14:00 hours.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO LEGAL DRAFTING IN ZAMBIA LATELY?: THE CASE OF THE MINERALS REGULATION

0

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO LEGAL DRAFTING IN ZAMBIA LATELY?:

THE CASE OF THE MINERALS REGULATION COMMISSIOLATELY

Last week, Government deferred the consideration of what is called as the “Minerals Regulation Commission Bill, 2024” that is intended to repeal and replace the Mines and Minerals Development Act, 2015.

The deferrement arose after it was noted by MPs, in particular, Kaminsa Member of Parliament Hon Christopher Kangombe that the bill had fundamental omissions of key components of the Mines and Minerals Development Act 2015 that were enacted to empower Zambian citizens. Whether the omission was a deliberate orchestration by the legal drafting team at the Attorney General’s Chambers or scheme by State House to serve foreign interests is a matter of speculation and conjecture to who it may concern.

But on my part, I purely blame it on ZIALE. Lately the numbers of student passing is too high. I think this contemporary chikwakwa policy is contributing to such pathetic quality of statute outputs.  In fact, it has become suicidal for the country to allow any repeal and replacement of any existing law because the likelihood of replacing a gem of a piece of legislation with marubbish of a law has become very, very high. It is better these hopeless drafters just handle amendments, not repeals and replacements.

Besides a few fundamental omissions that Hon Kangombe raised, there are also constitutional lapses. In addition, there is also and elementary titling issue which anybody who passed any basic degree and wrote a thesis is able to pin point.

Let me start with the basic issue: the citation or the title of the biIl. I have shared the objectives of the bill here.

When you read the objects or objectives, you will agree with me that no research supervisor in a university or college can approve your research or thesis topic if you were to “Minerals Regulation Commission Bill, 2024”. Not even “Minerals Regulations Bill, 2024” could be approved because minerals and mining are two different things altogether.

Coming to the constitutional lapse, besides ad-hoc commissions established through the Inquiries Act, Cap 41 of the Laws of Zambia, all other commissions are a creation of the Constitution of Zambia 2016.

According to Article 266 of the Constitution of Zambia 2016, a “commission” means a commission established under Part XVIII of the Constitution. Perusal of Articles 216 to 242, there is nothing called “Minerals Regulation Commission”. Implicitly, if parliament had passed the bill, the commission established under such an Act would have been unconstitutional. According to Article 1 of the Constitution of Zambia Amendment 2016, any written law that is inconsistent with its provisions is void to the extent of the inconsistency.

The implication of the lapse is that such commission established would not only be unconstitutional but also illegal. Consequently, any action taken by a so-called commission would be illegal.

To cut the whole story short, please Ba UPND Government don’t create a crisis in the management of the mining sector. Abandon the marubbish Minerals Regulation Commission Bill. If there is any addition you intend to make already existing Act, just amend it. This chipantepante strategy you are relying on will create a disaster for this country in the mining sector.

Don’t bring that bill to parliament again. Mwatusebanya pafula!

‘PAN AFRICANISM TODAY’ SECRETARIAT CONCERNED OVER ARREST OF DR M’MEMBE

‘PAN AFRICANISM TODAY’ SECRETARIAT CONCERNED OVER ARREST OF DR M’MEMBE

Johannesburg… Friday, August 9, 2024

The Pan Africanism Today (PAT) Secretariat in Johannesburg, South Africa, has expressed deep concern over the arrest and detention of Socialist Party (SP) of Zambia President Fred M’membe.

Speaking on behalf of the Secretariat, Jonis Ghedi Alasow stated that the continental body is alarmed by the erosion of fundamental decencies across many parts of the African continent.

Alasow highlighted that in the past week, they have been appalled by the brazen actions of unpopular and anti-democratic African governments, who are trampling on the rights of their people.

He emphasized that PAT is deeply disturbed to learn that Dr. M’membe was unjustly arrested on fabricated charges.

Alasow further noted that Dr. M’membe has been subjected to a pattern of harassment, including multiple arrests under false pretenses, interrogation in remote police stations, and a lack of substantial evidence against him.

He described the arrests as a crude form of intimidation.

“Similarly, yesterday, activists from the Communist Party of Kenya and the Mathare Social Justice Centre (Kinuthia Ndung’u, George Kiritu, Davis Tafari, and Samuel Gathanga) were arrested for articulating the will of the Kenyan people against the backdrop of William Ruto’s insistence on using his elected office to represent the IMF instead of the Kenyan People,” he said.

Alasow said earlier this week, the regime Mswati III in Swaziland, through proxies, initiated a witch-hunt for comrade Mlungisi Makhanya, the president of PUDEMO.

He said they are offering a reward of R400 000 to anyone who can arrest this important leader of the struggle for democracy in Swaziland.

“We join all peace-loving people in the world in denouncing this repression. Countries cannot be run as though we are characters in a fictional gangster film. The regimes of Kenya, Zambia and Swaziland are unpatriotic and have placed the interests of international exploiters over the will of their people. Those fighting for their people’s freedom must be celebrated, not arrested and bullied,” he said.

“We urge all progressive formations to stand in solidarity with our comrades and issue statements condemning these acts of repression!” he asserted.

THIS LUKAKU STORY WILL MOVE YOU TO TEARS

🗣️ Romelu Lukaku: “I was 6 years old, and I came home for lunch after school. Mom had the usual on the menu: bread and milk. But that day, I came home, and Mom started mixing the bottle of milk with something else.

“She served me lunch with a smile as if everything was fine. But I understood what she was doing. She was mixing milk with water. We didn’t have enough money to make the bottle last the whole week. And she always told me she had already eaten, but in reality, she hadn’t, just so I wouldn’t go without food. We weren’t just poor; we were broke.

“My parents, in the midst of misery, bet on me. They made huge efforts to take me to training. That’s why I played that first World Cup match with a lot of anger, for many reasons: for the rats running through our apartment, because I couldn’t watch the Champions League, we didn’t have a TV. I’d go to school, and all the kids would talk about the final. I had no idea what had happened. Everyone was talking about Zidane’s volley. I pretended to know what they were talking about, for the classmates’ parents who looked down on me because of my characteristics and condition.”

“One day I asked my father at what age it would be ideal to debut in football, and to give me any age (I found this out years later), he said 16. I didn’t stop until I achieved it. At that time, I was a substitute for Anderlecht, about to turn 16. I approached the coach and asked him to bet on me. I promised him a certain number of goals, and if I didn’t achieve them, he could bench me again. Indeed, at 16, I forced my debut. Not only did I score the promised goals, but I also became the top scorer in the national championship: I scored 76 goals in 34 matches; I did them all with my dad’s boots. From then on, I decided to be the best player in Belgium’s history. Not good. Not excellent. The best.”

Today Lukaku is trolled for his lack of goals, but he is an example of overcoming obstacles and perseverance 👏🥺

NO TYRANT RULES FOREVER; MR HICHILEMA WILL SOON RUN OUT OF TIME – Fred M’membe

NO TYRANT RULES FOREVER; MR HICHILEMA WILL SOON RUN OUT OF TIME

My dear brothers and sisters, country men and women, good morning!

Once again, I write to you from inside the cold floors and dark cells of Lusaka’s Twin Palm police post. I find myself in this situation at the desire and pleasure of Mr Hakainde Hichilema – the self-styled unerring, flawless and infallible leader of Zambia. There is absolutely no justifiable reason for my arrest and detention apart from the fact that Mr Hichilema wants me to be inside a police cell to satisfy his ego.

It is a petty, narrow-minded and insidious technique of control, which is typical of every disastrous and outgoing regime that is allergic to criticism and checks and balances. The only problem here is Mr Hichilema, who has elevated himself to be worthy and deserving of nothing but praise and acclamation irrespective of the obvious blunders and weaknesses. This is definitely not the way to govern a country. Mr Hichilema can dehumanize, brutalize and humiliate us in all sorts of ways, but he will never intimidate or break us. We are committed to carry this cross for the sake of our country and its people. Things can’t continue this way!

We know that the ongoing arbitrary arrests, intimidation, abductions and torture of political opponents are last kicks of a dying horse. The rise in intimidation and human rights abuses against citizens and critics signify the end of a very corrupt, vindictive and wicked regime. We say so because this corrupt, tribal puppet regime bears all the hallmarks of a frustrated and paranoid outgoing coward regime. In fact, they also know that they are leaving office hence the intimidation, repression and violent disruptions to the country’s democratic order. These unrepentant thieves fall far short of being regarded as leaders. They are not leaders but greedy corrupt elements whose only motivation to seek public office was to come and loot and stuff their bank accounts with millions stolen from the poor people. They are a bunch of uncultured, heartless and unprincipled individuals.

But more than that: it is very clear that Mr Hichilema is governing over a tremendously materialistic and corrupt regime-the most idle and corrupt regime in the history. We say this because there is no decent or clean president who can preside over such a very corrupt regime without being extremely corrupt himself. It is very clear that Mr Hichilema is failing to deal with this corruption because it is his corruption – it is corruption coming from the works of his own hands. But for how long? It’s just a matter of time. Mr Hichilema can run but he can’t hide. Even if he refuses to declare his assets and business dealings and interests, which in itself is a prima facie case for corruption. All the signs are clear that this is a vastly corrupt regime ni ba pompwe munshibila nsala, ba sendama nkwibile, ba mpelembe chibula matwi nangu mulande tabomfwa pantu basenda ukwiba nge nchito, beba nakutulo!

Nonetheless we are not surprised because this is what happens when values are lost. This is what happens when greed reigns supreme. This is a regime that is shamelessly absorbed in corruption, embezzlement and wealth accumulation to the extent that they can even maim or kill, in order to keep a tight lid on their crooked activities. But they are lying to themselves. No amount of intimidation, abductions, torture, arbitrary arrests and lock ups will prevent us from exposing their vicious looting of state coffers. Mr Hichilema and his evil little boy at State House should not think we are unaware of their criminal schemes and intentions to silence critics and political opponents with irrational, overzealous and old-fashioned governance tactics.

This will not work because some of us are beyond intimidation. Mr Hichilema can’t intimidate us! We are not cowards. We have never feared to be arrested or detained at any point in our revolutionary journey. We have come a long way to be intimidated or bullied into submission by these coward tribal crooks. As long as they are looting state resources, we shall loudly sound the alarm and disturb them. Our duty is to the country and not these unashamed thieves who are masquerading as liberal democrats whilst presiding over the most corrupt regime in history. Let Mr Hichilema arrest the high cost of living, loadshedding, uncontrollable corruption, hunger and many other difficulties he has inflicted on our people, and not critics or political opponents like myself.

One bad term, doesn’t deserve another, alefwaya nangu talefwaya, aleya!

Lungu, Mmembe and the JJ Banda scheme

STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lungu, Mmembe and the JJ Banda scheme

Thursday, 8th August 2024

LUSAKA – There is discernable corroboration between the escape from lawful custody of lawmaker Jay Jay Banda and comments from some opposition political party leaders.

Two days after leader of Socialist Party Fred Mmembe and former President Edgar Lungu sympathised with the criminality of Banda, the lawmaker escaped from custody via the sacred walls of the hospital.

The two opposition leaders went on the offensive, defending a man who stands accused of aggravated robbery, a charge that has no bail.

Society seems to have lost its moral campus.

How, on mother earth, would supposed respected leaders defend criminality?

Have Dr Mmembe and Mr Lungu, both lawyers, forgotten so easily about the mayhem Banda caused just a few years ago? We don’t think so.

We believe the two leaders are not only playing a political card but may be involved in the choreographed escape of Banda.

In all honesty, we expect the two leaders to help government cement the rule of law, especially that they are lawyers. Of course, their pedigree as lawyers is for Zambians to authenticate.

Ours is to expose an obvious dotted line between their observations and escape of Banda.

Zambians should begin to ask the two leaders serious moral and political questions.

Economic Front leader Wynter Kabimba was rather more forthright, saying the escape is part of a scheme to destabilise the country. We wouldn’t agree more with him.

Instead of aiding suspects to escape, as the case seems to be, Dr Mmembe and Mr Lungu should join hands with government to fight any form of criminality wherever it may be.

As things stand, it is difficult to divorce the two from the escape of Mr Banda.

Circumstantially, they are active players and should be answerable to Zambians.

Has it not dawned on Zambians that the purported illness of Mr Banda was possibly a creation of the two to facilitate the escape?

How would a man their cronies told us would soon be a double amputee find the muscle to escape?

This was clearly a morbid scheme whose end will boomerang terribly.

Kenyan youth call for ‘mother of all protests’ as president swears in new cabinet

Young protesters in Kenya returned to the capital’s streets for an eighth week of demonstrations on Thursday as President William Ruto swore in a new cabinet.

Police fired tear gas at protesters in Nairobi city center as many businesses remain closed. Widely shared posters on social media called for the “mother of all protests” dubbed the Nane Nane March after the Swahili translation of the day’s date – August 8.

“We shall march for our rights and tomorrow, we shall liberate this country,” Kasmuel McOure, one of the most prominent young protesters, told reporters on Wednesday.

The demonstrations started nearly two months ago, with mostly Gen Z Kenyans organizing on social media against a now withdrawn Finance Bill. They persisted as more citizens joined a largely leaderless movement against corruption, the high cost of living, and police brutality.

At least 61 people have been killed in the protests nationwide, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights said, accusing police of using excessive force and live rounds on mostly peaceful protesters.

Another prominent protester, Shad Khali, called Thursday the third liberation of the country, saying it was the “climax of one and a half months of Kenyans demanding for accountability and governance by the rule of law” on his X account. Many young people have criticized the label of “anti-government protests” used by the media, insisting that they are marching for their rights as guaranteed in the constitution.

Police warned that criminals planned to infiltrate Thursday’s protests to commit crimes, promising to deploy adequate security personnel. Acting police chief Gilbert Masengeli advised members of the public “to take extra caution while in crowded areas that are likely to turn riotous.”

President Ruto dismissed his cabinet last month after public pressure but reappointed about half of the ministers, drawing fresh outrage. Lawmakers rejected only one of the 20 names the Kenyan leader submitted to parliament for vetting, including several opposition politicians.

“I am convinced that this moment to build a strong team of rivals. With the formation of this broad-based government that brings together former political rivals into one selfless patriotic team, we will unlock the potential of our country that has long been denied us by factional and sectarian competition,” he said at State House Nairobi.

The protests in Kenya have inspired similar demonstrations in Uganda and Nigeria.

Consequence Hits Out At Kanye West’s Dentist Over Nitrous Gas Allegations

0

Consequence has new music on the way with longtime friend and collaborator Kanye West – as well as something to say to the dentist who has allegedly gotten Ye addicted to nitrous oxide.

Following allegations of the potentially fatal addiction by former chief of staff and far-right figure Milo Yiannopoulos, Cons took to Instagram with a video clip of a studio session with Ye and Timbaland.

In addition to revealing his next single will feature YNW Melly and production by Ye and Timbo, he hit out at the dentist who’s allegedly supplying Ye with the gas.

“G.O.O.D. things come To those who wait..” he said in the post on Wednesday (August 7). “Me and YE in @Timbaland studio cooking up what would be my next single ‘Overdose’ featuring @YNWMelly THIS FRIDAY 08.09.24.”

“By The Way Fuck Thomas Connelly If That Shit Is True!!!” he added.

The new song follows a collab between the two released last month titled “No Apologies,” though the track doesn’t actually feature Ye rapping. Instead, he speaks on the intro and then harmonizes with Cons on the chorus.

In an affidavit filed by Yiannopoulos against Thomas Connelly to the California Dental Board, he claims that the dentist is charging Kanye more than $50,000 per month for the gas.

In the filing, Yiannopoulos makes a number of wild allegations against Connelly, including that he desired to run West’s Yeezy company and develop a “personal use N²O² system” for an annual salary of $2.4 million.

Yiannopoulos also claims that Connelly got the rap mogul hooked on nitrous gas and would deliver canisters of it to his home, while Kanye has been frequently seen inhaling it through an oxygen mask.

The affidavit references a video posted online of Ye appearing to self-administer the gas while addressing boxer Ryan Garcia, saying: “Ryan Garcia, this Ye. I’m on the nitrous.”

Yiannopoulos claims that as a result of his gas addiction, Kanye has developed “distressing” side-effects and his behavior has concerned several Yeezy employees.

The affidavit cites a claim made by current Yeezy employee Eric Cui in June that Kanye underwent a brain scan which “revealed evidence of permanent brain damage from rampant, prolongued abuse of nitrous oxide.”

Ye’s former chief of staff also says that Connelly defrauds his dental customers by using fake diamonds and that he charged Lil Yachty over $1 million to implant potentially fake diamonds in his teeth.

Outside of Connelly, the affidavit claims that Kanye West has been robbed of a number of important belongings by an advisor named Paul Johnson.

Yiannopoulos claims items stolen include West’s Grammy Awards, as well as more personal belongings such as his mother’s death certificate and mementos from the births of his children.

For his part, Connelly denies the allegations, saying they are “not only factually incorrect but also intentionally misleading.”

Connelly also claims that Yiannopoulos is trying to destroy his reputation.

Kanye himself has not yet commented on the accusations.

Protests: Poland Demands Nigeria’s Release Of 7 Citizens Accused Of Hoisting Russian Flags

The Polish embassy has said it is working with the Nigerian government to secure the release of seven Polish nationals who were arrested and detained in Kano State during the recent #EndBadGovernancelnNigeria protests.

Among the detained individuals included six students and one lecturer accused of brandishing Russian flags during the protests — a report denied by the Polish government.

The Polish Deputy Foreign Minister, Andrzej Szejna, refuting the claims, stated that the detained individuals were not carrying flags but were merely photographing the protests.

Speaking to the Polish Press Agency, Szejna said the students ”found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were not carrying any flags, but It seems they were taking photos and this had been interpreted in this way.”

“Polish consular services are actively seeking their release and are in contact with both the Nigerian authorities and the students’ families,” Szejna added.

The Nigerian authorities who confirmed the arrests to Reuters said they were arrested in relation to the foreign flags displayed during the widespread protests, especially in Kano, where a curfew was imposed.

Spokesperson of the State Security Service (SSS), Peter Afunanya, said the Polish citizens were not targeted but detained as a measure to enforce law and order in the state.

Meanwhile, the University of Warsaw in a statement, confirmed that the detained individuals are affiliated with its Faculty of Oriental Studies and were in Nigeria for a study trip organized by the university.

According to the university, the group’s presence outside their accommodation at night was deemed a violation of local laws by the police.

THE WHISTLER had reported that some of the Nigerian protesters were seen carrying the Russian FLAGS during the ongoing protests in some northern states, especially, Kano and Kaduna.

The Russian embassy in Nigeria in a statement denied any involvement in the actions of the protesters in the country, saying they “are personal choices of the protesters and do not reflect the position or policy of the Russian Government.”

It was also reported that the young protesters, while displaying the Russian flags, were openly calling for a coup d’état by the army.

Nigeria’s military chief, Christopher Musa, said such acts constitute treason, which is punishable by death in the country and is defined by Nigerian laws as any act that among other things ”instigate(s) any foreigner to invade Nigeria with an armed force.”

Youths in Nigeria started the 10-day protests on August 1 against economic hardship and hunger.

The protests, which turned deadly in at least six northern states, have seen dozens killed, said Amnesty International.

Snoop Dogg reportedly earns $500,000 daily for being at Paris Olympics

0

Snoop Dogg is making headlines at the Paris Olympics, but, it isn’t all about the buzz and fun for him. He is reportedly earning $500,000 daily as a special correspondent for NBC and Peacock.

“Sat next to an NBC exec at dinner, he said Snoop gets paid $500k a day plus expenses to be here promoting Olympics,” X user @henrylmcnamara, a partner at the venture capital firm Great Oaks and a Forbes 30-Under-30 lister, according to LinkedIn, reported earlier this week.

“From [his song] ‘Gin and Juice’ to a few million to be a celebrity at the Olympics – what a world.” Sports business reporter Darren Rovell shared a similar sentiment, according to the New York Post.

“Sounds about right,” Rovell said in an X reply to McNamara. “Someone asked me how much Snoop was making. First number that came to mind was $10 million.”

The Olympics’ 16 days of competition could net Snoop an $8 million payday, excluding extra days for pre- or post-production work and expenses.

Snoop, whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr., has not commented on the rumor. Instead, he took to Instagram on Monday to repost a video of 5-year-old rap sensation Savannah McConneaughey.

“Thank you for giving me $500,000, but today’s going to be a great day,” she said before singing along to Snoop’s music.

Snoop has made his presence known at the Paris Olympics, which run through August 11. On Monday, he performed at “A Celebration of Olympic Basketball,” an event presented by NBC Universal and the NBA at Team USA House in Paris.

He served as a torchbearer, carrying the Olympic flame through Saint-Denis during the opening ceremony on July 26. He was also spotted dancing with Team USA gymnasts Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles and swimming with Michael Phelps for a promotional skit.

The 52-year-old music mogul added another by filming with his good friend Martha Stewart for NBC. The dynamic duo visited the iconic Château de Versailles, the site of the Olympic equestrian events, where they fed horses and enjoyed the dressage.

Snoop has always been open about his passion for the games and how much he invested to bring his A-game as an NBC correspondent.

Mnangagwa repeats term-limit climb down after Chiwenga open challenge

Barely two days after Vice President Constantino Chiwenga publicly warned Zanu-PF members against advocating for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s alleged plan to extend his term of office beyond the constitutionally mandated two-term limit, the Zanu-PF leader has once again reiterated that he will step down at the end of his term.

During his address to the Zanu-PF National Assembly of the Youth League in Harare on Wednesday, Mnangagwa reaffirmed his dedication to adhering to the provisions of the national Constitution, specifically emphasising his respect for the term limits enshrined within it.

He said this in front of his loyalist, cabinet Minister Tino Machakaire, who is one of the senior party officials advocating for Mnangagwa’s extended term of office.

“Besides being a soldier, I am a trained lawyer. I am a constitutionalist. I want our party, our leadership, and our people to be constitutionalists.

“We must abide by the provisions of our constitution to the letter. Kana nguva yekuti uende enda. (If your time to go comes, leave),” he said.

Mnangagwa said the same on July 4, 2024, during the commissioning of a juice and water production plant at the Mutare Teachers College, when he made his first announcement that the party will choose its next leader during the elective congress in 2027.

Despite these announcements, the party’s provincial structures have remained defiant, imploring President Mnangagwa to remain in power until 2030.

They have been using a controversial slogan, “2030 vaMnangagwa vanenge vachipo,” which can be loosely translated to “In 2030, Mnangagwa will still be our leader”.

Against this background, Chiwenga this week warned party members against supporting individuals in the party. He urged them to remain loyal to the party, adding that individuals could “come and go”.

“There is no room for factionalism at any level in the party. A party can not be undermined by being defined in the confines of individuals. I repeat, no factionalism in the party, we are one and shall remain one, hapana kuti uyu ndinomuda uyu handimude, tiri tese ka?

“Our loyalty is not to individuals but to the bigger agenda which is larger than us, that of the party and the people of Zimbabwe who are supreme, it is the party, it is the people of Zimbabwe who are supreme, not inini saChiwenga, I will come and go,” Chiwenga said.

Senior Zanu-PF leaders who are supporting the extension of the term of office for Mnangagwa include Machakaire, Justice and Parliamentary Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe, Zanu-PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa among others.

Ziyambi on Tuesday told the Daily News that people are able to amend the Constitution if they want Mnangagwa to stay in power beyond 2028.

“If the majority of the people are of the opinion that we need to extend President Mnangagwa’s term, then the law can always be amended to suit the people’s wishes. That is what democracy is all about,” he said.

Chiwenga’s camp reportedly comprises veterans of the liberation struggle like Mike Bimha, who was recently demoted by Mnangagwa from the position of party’s secretary for commissariate.

ISIS-inspired suspect planned suicide attack at Taylor Swift concert – Austrian authorities

Police in Austria have questioned three teenagers suspected of plotting a suicide attack at a Taylor Swift show, sparking renewed concerns over the indoctrination of young people online.

Foreign intelligence agencies helped authorities uncover the alleged scheme, according to the country’s Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. A source familiar told CNN that the US issued a warning to authorities in Vienna.

Organizers canceled three concerts, which were scheduled to take place in the European capital from Thursday to Saturday. CNN has reached out to Swift’s representatives for comment.

Investigators unearthed a stockpile of chemicals, explosive devices and detonators at the home of the main suspect, a 19-year-old ISIS sympathizer who had been radicalized online, according to authorities.

The young man – who was arrested Wednesday morning in the eastern town of Ternitz – planned to kill himself and “a large number of people,” according to the head of the domestic intelligence agency, Omar Haijawi-Pirchner.

“He said he intended to carry out an attack using explosives and knives,” Haijawi-Pirchner told reporters in Vienna on Thursday. “His aim was to kill himself and a large number of people during the concert, either today or tomorrow.”

Two other suspects were detained, aged 17 and 15. The 17-year-old worked for a facilities company that would have provided services at the concert venue. He was near the stadium when he was arrested and had recently broken up with his girlfriend, according to Haijwai-Pirchner.

Little has been revealed about the 15-year-old. Prosecutors will decide later if he was a witness or directly involved in the alleged plot.

The three are all Austrian-born with either Turkish, North Macedonian or Croatian backgrounds.

The trio were in contact with other individuals who knew about the plan, said the country’s director general for public security, Franz Ruf. No-one else is being sought in direct connection with the plot, Ruf added.

The cancellations of the Swift concert triggered an outpouring of heartbreak, grief and relief among Swifties hoping to attend the record-breaking Eras Tour in Vienna. Hailed as a cultural phenomenon, the scale, influence and intricacy of Swift’s musical voyage have made headlines for boosting the economies of the cities she visits.

Pepe decided to announce his retirement following a sensational 23-year playing career in Spain on Thursday where he revealed his decision in a glamorous video that matched the titles he has won throughout the years.

In a video, Pepe stated: ‘I want to thank God for giving me the wisdom to be able to continue my journey. I can’t help but thank all the presidents who bet on me and believed in me.

‘To Jorge Mendes, to Gestifute, to my mother, who was essential in my journey by letting me fly towards my dream, which was to be a professional footballer. To all my friends and family, especially my wife, who was my home in my absence.

‘My children for believing in me, for being a fundamental support in my life, for supporting me when I left home to play. They were the support I needed to be able to go with a clear conscience.

Here is what you need to know about Kamala’s VP pick Tim Walz and his record on Black issues

0

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has been selected by Kamala Harris as her vice-presidential running mate. The news of Harris picking Walz took social media by storm on Tuesday.

Walz, a Midwestern Democrat, is a former high school teacher and military veteran. He is expected to appeal to conservative-leaning voters in the forthcoming U.S. elections.

Before his selection, other prospective VP candidates included Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

After Harris settled on Walz, a source told NBC News, “Harris made calls to the contenders who were not selected Tuesday morning.”

Her decision to pick Walz appears to have been supported by progressive groups and unions.

Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association, said in a statement, “Gov. Walz is known as the ‘Education Governor’ because he has been an unwavering champion for public school students and educators and an ally for working families and unions.”

Pringle added that under Walz’s tenure as leader of Minnesota, he “helped enact a long list of progressive policy priorities in Minnesota, could win over voters in Midwestern swing states. He said he would help Democrats push to expand reproductive health, voting, and workers’ rights on the federal level, if elected.”

More about Tim Walz

In 2006, Walz started his political career and ran for Congress in a Republican-leaning district where he defeated the incumbent. He served in that seat until he won the race for governor in 2018 and 2022. Also the head of the Democratic Governors Association, Walz has been active on the campaign trail for Biden and Harris in recent years.

Walz, 60, gained prominence after one of his videos went viral and appeared on television. Referring to former President Donald Trump and VP running mate J.D. Vance, he said, “These guys are just weird.” He is also known for standing against the GOP.

Raised in a small town in Nebraska, Walz’s background is seen as an advantage in helping to secure the rural vote. “The golden rule that makes small towns work so we’re not at each others’ throats all the time in a little town is: mind your own damn business,” Walz said at their first rally on Tuesday.

Why Kamala Harris probably chose Tim Walz

Harris’ decision to choose Walz has given room for speculation. Insider sources familiar with the selection process have said, “The vice president was looking for a governing partner she had chemistry with and could envision working well with for the next four to eight years.”

“She wanted someone who would not undermine her leadership, could potentially expand the Democratic map and who could deftly handle GOP attacks,” the sources told NBC News.

“Putting Walz on the ticket could help Democrats hold the state’s 10 electoral votes and bolster the party more broadly in the Midwest. No Republican has won a statewide race in Minnesota since Tim Pawlenty was re-elected governor in 2006, but GOP candidates for attorney general and state auditor came close in 2022,” reported local news outlet WCVB.

Impact on Black communities

The VP running mate is also known for his advocacy that has helped Black communities. In July, he signed the African American Family Preservation Act to grant protections to families confronted with separation in the foster care system.

In February 2023, Walz signed the CROWN Act to fight against the discrimination Black and brown people face in the workplace and at school because of their hair texture or style.

To help address violence against Black women, Walz established the Missing and Murdered African American Women’s Task Force in 2021.

Following the killing of George Floyd in 2020, he enacted police reforms after a lengthy struggle to get a bill through the state’s divided government.

Other advocacy

Additionally, Walz has been a known figure advocating for safeguarding reproductive rights, which include access to in vitro fertilization.

Are you happy about Kamala Harris’ decision to pick Walz as her VP running mate? Your thoughts are welcome in the comments section.

Nigeria failed her, so she switched allegiance to U.S. and won their first Olympic medal in women’s hammer

0

nnette Echikunwoke won a silver medal in the women’s hammer throw at Paris 2024 for the United States. That medal she won could have been for her ancestral homeland, Nigeria.

She had initially opted to compete for Team Nigeria ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, but an administrative oversight by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) made that dream illusive. On Tuesday, she won a hammer Olympic medal as the first American woman to do so.

Born in Ohio, America, she holds dual American-Nigerian citizenship. She was set to represent Nigeria, her parents’ country, in Tokyo 2020. After arriving in the Japanese capital, officials did not allow her to compete, despite breaking the African record in qualification. Echikunwoke was heartbroken.

“On my 25th birthday, I was officially informed that I cannot compete at the Tokyo Olympics due to the negligence of the federation I was set to compete for,” she said in a message posted on Instagram. “I can’t even begin to explain how heartbroken I am. This has been the most mentally and emotionally exhausting time of my life.”

A rule required athletes to undergo three out-of-competition tests within 10 months before a major event. However, the AFN failed to comply with the rule, even though she had provided her whereabouts to the AFN six times during that timeframe. She said Nigeria did not make arrangements to get her tested.

“The AFN bears responsibility for any lapses that may have occurred during the process,” a statement by the organization said, the BBC reported. “A few athletes in the American collegiate system were tested, but those tests were deemed not to have complied with World Anti-Doping Agency sample collection and analysis standards.”

Following the shattering of her dream to represent Nigeria, she decided that representing the country of her birth would be in her best interest and her career goals. She became an American athlete.

In her 2022 debut at the World Championships in Eugene, she finished 12th in the final. She became a surprise winner of the 2024 US Olympic trials, throwing a season’s best of 74.86 m.

She then bettered her trial record at the Stade de France on Tuesday evening, coming in second behind Canada’s Camryn Rogers with a mark of 75.48 m.

“I felt pretty secure coming into the competition. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime,” Echikunwoke said. “It’s electric – just being on the US team, being in the final, coming into the stadium, and hearing everyone [be] so loud. [To be] the first woman to medal (in hammer throw) for the US, it’s really an honor. It’s really vindication. I wanted the experience.”

M’MEMBE ARRESTED FOR SAYING CONGO PRESIDENT FELIX TSHISEKEDI PAID $20M TO BUY ZAMBIA’S SILENCE – POLICE

TSHISEKEDI TELLS DRC CATHOLIC BISHOPS ABOUT THE US$20M PAY-OUT TO BUY ZAMBIA’S SILENCE

It is very sad that Mr Felix Tshisekedi, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), can no longer hide how he has extended his corruption and other abuses in the Congo-DR to the whole region.

In a recent meeting with Congo-DR Catholic Bishops, the visibly annoyed Mr Tshisekedi, divulged to the Catholic Bishops that no matter what they do in opposition to his corrupt, repressive and scandalous regime, he was in total control of the region. He claimed that he had paid millions of dollars to the region’s leaders, except Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa who has refused to take his money, and that in Zambia, a sum of US$ 20 million has been taken from Mr Tshisekedi. He also bragged to the Catholic Bishops that because of these huge pay-outs, none of his critics, political opponents and their supporters, including former Congo-DR president Joseph Kabila, who is currently leaving outside, will be accommodated in any of these countries whose leaders he has captured, and that all critics and political opponents fleeing will be apprehended and sent back to Congo-DR.

We are worried about these revelations. We are worried that if nothing is done, the bells tolling on the people of the Congo-DR will tomorrow toll on us in this region, especially us in Zambia, whose proximity to the Congo-DR is much more and whose leadership seem to have an insatiable appetite for dollars, and are also in a hurry to become big millionaires or if possible, billionaires. If a leader of a country can receive a sum of US$ 20 million of unearned money as a personal gift from a leader of another country whose people are very poor and the country is in turmoil, and ingulfed in an intractable civil war, what does that mean?

We had Mobutu Seseseko, one of the most corrupt and senselessly tyrannical African leaders in history, flashing around millions of dollars he had stolen from the people of Zaire, as the Congo-DR was called then, but none of our leaders in the region took a cent from him. Tanzania’s Mwalimu Julius Nyerere took nothing. Zambia’s Kenneth Kaunda took nothing. Angola’s Augustino Neto took nothing. Namibia’s Sam Nujoma took nothing. Botswana’s Ketumire Masire took nothing. Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe took nothing. Mozambique’s Samora Machel took nothing. And even South Africa’s Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki took nothing.

But today, our leaders are stuffing their bank accounts with millions stolen from the poor Congolese people. This is what happens when principles are lost. This is what happens when values are lost. This is what happens when greedy reigns supreme. The likes of Tshisekedi and those he is bribing are not leaders. They are something else but not leaders. But as they say, it is just a matter of time before the chickens come home to roost. Those involved in this evil scheme shall pay the price and regret their greedy actions someday soon.

We demand that the Zambian authorities come clean on Mr Tshisekedi’s huge pay-out claims.

PARLEY SELECT COMMITTEE REPORT SHOWS DEBT ACQUIRED UNDER PF WAS WELL UTILISED- HON GOLDEN MWILA

PARLEY SELECT COMMITTEE REPORT SHOWS DEBT ACQUIRED UNDER PF WAS WELL UTILISED- HON GOLDEN MWILA.

……….says no funds were misapplied from the Eurobonds, FTJ University payments among others.

Lusaka – Wednesday, 31st July 2024 (SmartEagles).

Mufulira Central Member of Parliament Golden Mwila says the report of the select Committee has put to rest the malicious rumors and propaganda surrounding the PF government’s handling of funds.

The report  stems from a select committee appointed by the Speaker to look at the Auditor General’s special report on the external debt of the Republic of Zambia covering the period from 1st January 2006 to 31st December 2022.

Among the key items highlighted include the Eurobonds, and clarity on FTJ University.

And Hon Mwila said the report has clearly  indicated that no funds were misapplied on the debt contracted by the previous government and that the money had been utilized for its intended purposes such as infrastructure development.

He said it is worth noting that this special audit was instituted with the hope of implicating people of having squandered the debt that the PF acquired.

He has however paid tribute to the select committee for doing an excellent job, interacting with controlling officers from various institutions and parastatals affected by the report.

Hon Mwila is hopeful that the UPND Propaganda will be put to an end as they expected that the report would expose the perceived wrongdoing.

“We hope that this report now settles and it should put to an end the propaganda of the UPND, yes this special audit was instituted with the hope of implicating people of having squandered the debt that the PF acquired. The officers had appeared before the committee, setting the record straight and dispelling the many falsehoods that had been spread,” he said.

Hon Mwila said the report has exonerated the Performance of the PF Government as far as debt contraction and utilisation is concerned because in that report, no names have been mentioned to be found capable of mishandling or misusing the debt that was contracted.

He also said that the Eurobonds had been contracted at three different points, with clear documentation of how the funds had been applied.

“To their disappointment, the report was clear that the debt that PF contracted, even when you seeing that the report covers the period from 2006 almost 100% covers when the PF was in power.  It has talked about the three Euro Bonds, the debt that parastals contracted, ZESCO Bank of Zambia, water utility companies. Etc.  The Euro Bonds were contracted at three different points, the first one was 750 million dollars, second one was 1 billion dollars and the third one was 1.25 billion dollars.

The report has put it very clear where these Eurobonds were applied.  The first Euro bond, the institutions that benefited from that, the second Eurobond the institution that benefited. Same as the Third Euro bond. And in all these, backed by the Auditor General’s report and the select Committee, it is very clear that those funds were applied for the intended purpose. Ofcourse, there were some institutions which received part of these Eurobonds who have been highlighted in the report like Zambia railways, it was not out of misapplication, it was administrative issues……..DBZ also benefited from the first Eurobond of course they had operational issues which they had been struggling with before the coming of the Euro bonds,” he said.

With regards the FTJ University issue which was blown out of proportion,  Hon Mwila said the report is also clear that there was no irregularity in government making an advancement payment of over 33 million dollars to the contractor.

He said this is because the amount was counterpart funding that the Government was obliged to pay first before the financing could begin to flow.

“It was a normal contracting procedure to do that.  They finished this Item with half baked information. When you read the AG report about the $33 million paid to the contractor because the contract was terminated by December 2022 that funds had not recovered. But the controlling officer appeared in the select Committee and said there was no irregularity,” he said.

JJ’s wife still in detention

Lombe Chali, one of Emmanuel JJ Banda’s three wives remains detained at Chipata Central Police on suspicions of aiding her husband escape from lawful custody as he was being treated at Chipata General Hospital.

The Petauke Central member of parliament who is facing an non bailable charge of aggravated robbery was remanded at Namuseche Correctional Facility in Chipata but got admitted to Chipata General Hospital on August 1.

He is said to have escaped from the health facility through a window standing more than two meters high on Sunday evening and manhunt has been underway since.

Government chief spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa announced yesterday that investigative agencies had so far made progress in finding the location where Banda was hiding.

Mweetwa revealed that government had established that Banda’s escape was a well orchestrated plan whose execution involved a number of people.

Mweetwa who is also Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Madai said police and other agencies of the security of the state were closing in on all those who helped in the escape and their sponsors.

“Currently, Emmanuel Jay Banda is believed to be hiding within traceable vicinity, or in other words, within neighborhoods were he may easily be brought back into lawful custody of the state so that the wheels of justice can continue to prevail,” Mweetwa said.

“So the Nation should know that, that particular wife is the one who was in his presence at the time of securing his privacy so that the security ‘guards’ or police or wardens who were in charge to secure his presence could give that opportunity for his flight,” Mweetwa added.

Mweetwa reiterated that JayJay’s case is not a political matter but a criminal matter that is being treated just like any other criminal matter in the nation, urging individuals with the  habit of preemptive  assertions about the state of affairs relating to the matter, to refrain at all times.

“They are seems to be a pattern from certain colleagues who when Emmanuel Banda was said to have been abducted, even before many people could comment about him having been found, they were quick to say, he had been found in Kafue, they were also quick to begin to question about his were about, just upon his disappearance,” Mweetwa said.

The minister added that government was looking upon such kind of conduct with disdain, urging citizens, particularly lawmakers to exercise some level of responsibility and not be the ones in the forefront of disinformation and misinformation.

He said when leaders like lawmakers speak, unsuspecting ordinary citizens take their message to be the Gospel truth.

Mweetwa said government will keep updating the nation on necessary information regarding the matter, not because it is special, but because it an important one, distinguishable to others as the person involved is a member of parliament, elected to represent people.

“His disappearance attracts not just his constituency and National attention, but the international community as well gets concerned about such kinds of occurrences in the nation. For now, we ask for calm amongst his electorates, and amongst his electorates and amongst citizens and just like the alleged abduction, we are hopeful that he will be brought back in good health so that he can continue were he left,” said Mweetwa.

I REPORTED KAMBWILI TO ESTABLISH IF HE WAS PERMITTED TO HOLD A PUBLIC GATHERING – KALONDE

I REPORTED KAMBWILI TO ESTABLISH IF HE WAS PERMITTED TO HOLD A PUBLIC GATHERING – KALONDE

NETWORK for Young People Against Violence director, Moses Kalonde yesterday told the Court that he reported Chishimba Kambwili to the police for holding an illegal gathering at his home, after he came across a video of youths on facebook singing a malicious song expressing how contrite they felt for not boarding a boat, but instead chose to ride a bull.

He said though the youth composed a tribal song filled with innuendo, Kambwili advised them not to step into his shoes in advocating for tribalism.

In this matter Kambwili is charged with unlawful assembly and hate speech

Testifying before Magistrate Kawama Mwamfuli Kalonde said according  to the video he watched the youths carried placards, and were singing; “ubupuba bwesu ba youth (our foolishness as youths), mwatwebele ati tukakwele ubwato but twaya nina ingombe (you told us to get on the boat but we rode on cattle instead)”

Kalonde said the youths sang the song while matching to Kambwili’s home as he awaited them there.

“From what I assumed, Dr Chishimba Kambwili was awaiting the same youths that came. After they arrived, the youths settled and stopped singing then a group representative who I recognized by the name of Charles Kakula spoke on behalf of the youths,” he said.

“He said we have come here on behalf of the youths to come and apologize that we voted for the UPND and not the PF. You told us to vote for PF but we did not listen.”

Kalonde recounted that the three lads complained about the high cost of living and Kambwili assured them that he would table their concerns before President Hakainde Hichilema.

He said Kambwili advised his boys not to be tribal by referring to cattle to symbolize the party.

“Dr Chishimba Kambwili also addressed the youths, discouraging them from using tribal remarks in connection with the song that they came singing in apparent reference to the climbing on a cow and not a boat,” he said.

“He (Kambwili) further went on to say we are one Zambia, one nation, the UPND party has a symbol you are better off referring to the UPND symbol and not the cow because that is not the symbol of the UPND.”

Kalonde said  Kambwili commended the youth for gathering at his home to air out their grievances unlike resorting to violence.

“From what I could see, there were more than 30, 40 people. After I watched that video, I then decided to report the matter to the police. I went to Force Headquarters. As a lay person, I questioned myself if at all that gathering was sanctioned by law,” said Kalonde.

During cross examination by Kennedy Mambwe the witness was asked if he produced the video to support his testimony but, he responded in the negative.

He said his complaint was against Kambwili as he wanted to establish whether he had obtained a permit from the police to invite a huge crowd at his home.

Asked if Kambwili is required to get a permit whenever he is receiving visitors at his home, Kalonde said he was not a legal expert hence the reason he reported the matter to law enforcement officers.

He said non of the people at Kambwili’s home behaved in a manner that would cause the breach of peace.

Trial continues on September 3.

Whilst leaving Court Kambwili who is recovering from his illness told journalists to give him a break with pictures and stop capturing how he toddled like a child learning to walk

“Empomwambile ukunkopa kwena muleumfwa bwino I fifine nshile enda bwino? (You have taken enough pictures, are you enjoying to see me toddle ?),” said Kambwili.

EFCC refuses to vacate its order for forfeiture of Muchemwa’s properties

EFCC refuses to vacate its order for forfeiture of Muchemwa’s properties

THE ECONOMIC and Financial Crimes Court has maintained that Francis Muchemwa’s properties will be forfeited to the State and be disposed of in a manner the State wishes.

Lusaka Chief resident magistrate Davies Chibwili said suspending the forfeiture order will serve no purpose when the properties are still in the hands of the State.

Following Muchemwa’s conviction two weeks ago, his lawyer Nathan Muyembe asked the Court to suspend its order permitting the Anti-Corruption Commission to permanently seize house house, apartments, land with incomplete flats and two Faw trucks.

Muyembe made the application, pursuant to Section 331(b) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) pending determination of the appeal against the conviction in the High
Court.

But ACC senior prosecutor Daniel Ngwira opposed the application on reasons that Section 331 (b) of the CPC relates to restoration of property to rightful owners at the conclusion of the case and cannot be used to suspend a forfeiture order already made by the court.

He said asking the Court to suspend its ruling of July 29, 2024 for forfeiture, the Interested parties are essentially asking the court to review its own order.

Ngwira argued that the Subordinate Court has no powers to make revisory orders over its judgments.

In his ruling yesterday magistrate Chibwili said the forfeiture order can only be suspended when his judgment is overturned by a superior Court.

“The property in question has been under the custody of the state from the time when the convicts were arrested. The question I ask myself is what would be the point of suspending the order if the property will still be in the custody of the state?,”

“This is a conviction based on the forfeiture. Unless the conviction is impugned, the order will follow. The applicant’s application is therefore declined as it will not serve any purpose. The earlier order still stands,”said magistrate Chibwili.

The ferocious Muchemwa who was second in command at intercity bus terminus during the PF regime, was on July 26, 2024 sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labor by the EFCC for possessing a luxurious house, apartments, land with incomplete flats, and two Faw trucks worth over K12 million which were way beyond his legitimate source of income.

He was also fined K141,000 for obtaining pecuniary advantages by false pretenses when he drew the said amount from ZESCO as subsistence allowances for the trips he undertook yet he never filed an imprest retirement report.

I WILL BE ON THE BALLOT IN 2026 – EDGAR  LUNGU  TELLS MAYORS AND COUNCIL CHAIRPERSONS

I WILL BE ON THE BALLOT IN 2026 – ECL TELLS MAYORS AND COUNCIL CHAIRPERSONS .

By Smart Eagles 礪

Sixth Republican President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu has told the PF Mayors and Council Chairpersons that he will be on the presidential election ballot in 2026 because the PF of zambia have demanded it.

The Former Head of State who is Party President of the Patriotic Front was speaking to the mayors and council chairpersons who called on him in Lusaka today.

Dr Edgar Lungu reiterated the fact that the majority of Zambians now regret openly their decision to vote the Patriotic Front out of power because things were far much better before august 2021.

“ As for 2026, I promise you all that whatever evil any man plans against me here on earth, as long as any such man is not God, I will be on the Ballot in 2026” President Edgar Lungu said.

The Sixth President under whose reign Zambians bought mealie meal and other essentials at more affordable prices, said that the corrupt UPND government of Mr Hichilema has lamentably failed to govern the country.

Further, President Lungu assured the PF civic banner men and women that he is doing everything possible as party president to ensure that all the perceived wrangles in PF are resolved within the shortest period of time.

“ PF shall remain PF “ President Lungu said.

And President Lungu has since told the civic leaders to continue to mobilize the party in their jurisdictions to ensure that PF members remain intact in PF as the UPND will be defeated in 2026 and therefore there is no need to join them.

On their part, the mayors and council chairpersons who spoke through the Kitwe Mayor Mpasa Mwaya who is also PF chairperson for local government thanked President Edgar Lungu for hosting them.

Syndicate of criminals financing Jay Banda…Kabimba challenges Government to find his financers

Syndicate of criminals financing Jay Banda
…Kabimba challenges Government to find his financers

Says their broad scheme is to cause anarchy in the country
ECONOMIC Front Party (EFP) president, Wynter Kabimba says the Government should find the network that is funding fugitive Petauke Central Member of Parliament (MP), Emmanual Jay Banda’s activities.

And the opposition leader says the Petauke lawmaker is being funded by a syndicate of criminals whose broad scheme is to cause anarchy in the country.

Addressing the press, Mr. Kabimba said it was unfortunate that some sections of society were opposed to the prosecution of the Petauke lawmaker who had clearly committed a number of crimes against citizens when the Patriotic Front (PF) was in office.

“Jay Jay Banda is not alone in this whole thing. I do not believe that he jumped through the window as it is being claimed. My view is that he was actually aided and walked out of the hospital door. Who paid for his way out.

“The question is, what is the motive of those that are behind Jay Jay Banda’s activities. Government should find the network that is funding him,” he said.
Mr. Kabimba said the UPND should not be apologetic about making citizens account for the crimes that have been committed.
“In fact Zambians must be happy that they have a government that is making people to account for their wrong doing. Those whos are supporting Banda do they know how the family of the man he almost burnt and urinated in the mouth are feeling?” he said.

He has since challenged the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Hon. Jack Mwiimbu to tell the nation who has been financing the Petauke lawmaker including his escape from lawful custody.
“That is the role of intelligence they must tell the nation who is funding all these activities? UPND should wake up. They are running a country and not a church organisation,” he said.

He said those that offend society must be arrested and prosecuted accordingly regardless of their status in society.
“And those who are arrested they can’t be prosecuted from the hotel. They must be in prison. UPND should protect us and the country,” he said.

Zambian churches must pay performance rights: A call to support gospel artists

Zambian churches must pay performance rights: A call to support gospel artists

THE recent funeral of Matthews Ngosa, a celebrated gospel artist, has reignited a crucial discussion on the financial struggles faced by gospel musicians in Zambia.

Attending the funeral at Praise Christian Centre, music promoter Fred Kisela shared his reflections on the harsh realities confronting gospel artists. Recalling a poignant moment, Kisela said, “As I stood outside, a heart-wrenching cry pierced the somber air: ‘My brother died poor.'”

Hezron Ngosa, mourning the loss of his brother, Matthew, echoed these sentiments during the funeral.

“My brother Matthew has died poor but he worked so hard,” Hezron said. Despite Matthew’s widespread acclaim for his music, including the hit song “Umutima Wandi,” he did not make significant financial gains from his ministry.

Kisela added, “In my heart, I was shocked. I asked Elder Chibwe Katebe if he heard what was said. I thought to myself, ‘Let the brother vent; it’s part of the healing process.’ But I also wondered what could be done to help gospel artists.”

Kisela, who has actively worked to promote gospel music, and was part of those that organised the “Sinach Live in Concert with Zambian Top Gospel Artists event.

Despite numerous challenges that occured during the event he emphasised that all the artists were well compensated, even though the investors did not break even.

To address the ongoing struggle of gospel musicians to earn a decent livelihood, Kisela proposed a solution: “I suggest that the Zambian Music Copyright Protection Society establish a deliberate MoU or policy with Zambian churches. Each church could pay for a music use rights certificate annually. This money would be distributed to gospel artists based on the music performed in church, tracked by a digital device or monthly register.”

Kisela believes this approach would ensure fair compensation for gospel musicians, monetising their work to create an economically valuable industry and generate jobs.

“It’s sad to see gospel artists have nothing to show for their work when their music can be monetized to create an economically valuable industry and generate jobs,” he said.

46-year-old singer Ngosa passed away in Lusaka last Thursday after being diagnosed with liver cancer earlier this year.

Hezron revealed that Matthew had opportunities to accumulate wealth and land as a councillor for Madido ward, yet he died without a house of his own.

“Today you are listening to his music but each time he performed—I was backing vocalist—he walked away with a ‘thank you,’” Hezron lamented. He also pointed to piracy as a factor that deprived Matthew’s children of a decent livelihood.

Even Gospel musician Kings Mumbi highlighted Matthew’s dedication to ministry over financial gain.

“When a pastor invited Matthew Ngosa to their church to sing but couldn’t pay him, he would not bother that pastor because for Matthew, singing was part of his ministry. He took it as a way of spreading the word of God,” Mumbi told the BBC last week.

Meanwhile, commenting on the situation, preacher Bishop Bilon Kalumbinga expressed frustration with the way gospel artists are treated.

Bishop Kalumbinga posed critical questions: “Why are Christians like this? On the secular space, people and organisations pay for services rendered to them. But in churches, especially among Pentecostals, we seem to take advantage of each other! Why?”

He called for an end to this practice, emphasising that everyone should be compensated for their work.

“When we fail to pay a Gospel Performing Artist or a Preacher, what is going on in our head? How do we think this person survives? How do we think he supports his family?” Kalumbinga asked.

“This is a very sad behavior and we need to stop it. In the future when Artists and Preachers ask for a down payment before they commit, no one should raise an accusing finger. It’s not too much of asking to state that everyone should survive by their occupation. As Christians, we must learn to pay for services rendered to us or to our organisation.”
