Demolition of ‘Marie Curie’ site on hold in Paris amid heritage debate

0

France’s culture minister said Friday that the demolition of a site linked to pioneering radioactivity researcher Marie Curie would be put on hold. This after several prominent figures called for its preservation in the name of heritage.

The Curie Institute will “suspend demolition of the Pavillon des Sources to take the time to look at… any possible alternative,” Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malak wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Critics of the demolition say two-time Nobel winner Marie Curie worked in a laboratory in the building, while its proponents dispute this.

A cancer-fighting foundation, the Curie Institute wants to build a 2,000-square metre five-storey research centre at the site in Paris’ touristy Latin Quarter.

It would be “the first centre for cancer-related chemical biology in Europe” and “an indispensable scientific project”, Curie Institute chief Thierry Philip told French news agency AFP.

He added that he had had a “calm exchange on the complex debate” with minister Abdul Malak “on a question of memory that stokes so much emotion today”. Choice between memory and living science

If no “alternative solution” can be found, “we will have to calmly make a decision between memory and living science,” Philip said.

Figures including television presenter Stephane Bern and conservative former minister Rachida Dati launched the debate around the Pavillon des Sources into the public eye.

It would be a “serious mistake” to destroy the building, Bern wrote on social media platform X this week.

He called on President Emmanuel Macron to defend it as an important aspect of French heritage.

“It is not extraordinary architecture, but it is a symbolic, memorial heritage,” he declared on Thursday on France Culture radio.

Philip said that the Pavillon des Sources was not a laboratory used by Curie, but rather served to store radioactive waste and today stands empty.

Her actual laboratory, the Curie pavilion, is not in danger of being demolished, he said.

Meanwhile, Marc Joliot, the great-grandson of Marie Curie and director of research at the Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA) says he is in favour of building the new scientific research centre.

“I am a fervent defender of the scientific project,” Joliot told France Info on Saturday, adding he “would have liked to keep this building” but cancer research is “extraordinarily important”.

ZAMBIA IS BLESSED TO HAVE A GOVERNMENT THAT LOOKS AT CITIZENS EQUALLY-NYAMBOSE

Chasefu Member of Parliament Misheck Nyambose has been elated with the pace at which CDF projects are currently moving in Chasefu District of eastern province.

Mr. Nyambose who recently conducted a tour of his constituency to appreciate the implementation of CDF projects says the coming of the new dawn government has uplifted the lives of people not only in Chasefu District, but the country as a whole.

Mr. Nyambose observes that Zambia is blessed to have a government that looks at all citizens equally and has since encouraged President Hakainde Hichilema not to tire in uplifting the standards of Zambians.

Mr. Nyambose says Chasefu District is moving at a significant pace to change its status all thanks to the continued increment of the CDF allocation whose management by Chasefu Town Council is effective.

He has since called on all stakeholders in the district to be more united in order to serve the community of Chasefu District better.

Among the CDF projects that the area Member of Parliament toured include; a completed 1 by 3 classroom block at Champheta Magodi Primary school and the staff house which is at roof level in Kapilisanga ward, 1 by 2 classroom block at Chidolo Primary School in Luwerezi ward, a completed 1 by 3 classroom block at Mswazi Community School in Kajilime ward, a completed staff house at Susa Primary school in Susa ward, a staff house at Khulamayembe primary school in Mandaholl ward which is in its final stage and a 1 by 3 classroom block at Eluhangeni Primary School in Chaboli ward.

The lawmaker who was in the company of Chasefu District Commissioner Jimmy Phiri during his tour of duty also took time to visit ward development committees in order to appreciate their challenges and what is needed for them to work effectively.

And Chasefu District Commissioner Jimmy Phiri is optimistic that Chasefu District is on the path of positive transformation in the wake of increased CDF allocation as the district is now having the much needed infrastructure development.

Meanwhile two headmen and the Parents-Teachers Association Chairperson in Susa ward have expressed happiness with the construction of a staff house at Susa Primary School saying it will motivate the teachers to provide the much required service.

Headmen Chiwongo and Katika along with the PTA chairman have observed that teachers at Susa Primary have suffered the accommodation crisis which has made them fail to effectively render their services

NOMINEES FOR THE “ZAMBIA 2023 FAIR PLAY AWARD”

By: Sakwiba Sikota

(”2023 ZAMBIAN GOOD SAMARITAN AWARD”)

The world is generally filled with bad news and negativity.

Let us start this year with positivity and heart warming stories that do not weigh down on our shoulders.

I hope that comments to this posting will pick up on the positive theme and nominate people they feel should be on the list giving reasons why they should be considered. Alternatively people reading this post and comments giving their own nominees can simply like the comment.

This will give an indication of which nominees are most deserving.

This is my list of nominees of Zambians worthy of consideration to be awarded the Fair Play or Good Samaritan Award for 2023. My list includes even people doing heroic deeds or things they were not obliged to do and I give brief description of why I have nominated these people.

My nominees for the ‘Zambia 2023 Fair Play Awards’ or ‘2023 Zambian Good Samaritan Award’, in no particular order, are:

*Kenny Kangwa who found joy in giving provisions for two week old twins whose mother died in child birth. He was not related to the twins but just learnt of their plight and thought that he should contribute to give them a fair initial start in life. His action brought the plight of these orphaned twins to everyone’s attention so much so that other individuals and even the government felt compelled to step in.

*UPND Secretary General Batuke Imenda for issuing a statement that strongly condemned and chastised the incorrigible Inspector General of Zambia Police and his men for disrupting Kasonde Mwenda’s press briefing in Kitwe and the ruling party cadres for assaulting and abducting the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader towards the end of last year. It shows fair play when you chastise your own.

*Trade Kings Foundation, a private organisation, for donating K250,000:00 to government towards the rescue mission at the Senseli Mine disaster rescue mission. Other organisations then followed suit to donate to government over the same.

*Dr. Fred M’membe for going to give solidarity to the Lungu family at Police station where Esther Lungu was detained. This is especially so seeing what the relationship between the Post Newspapers and the ECL administration was.

*Rescue teams drawn from Nkana, Mufulira, Mopani, Nchanga, KCM Mines for sending rescuers to assist at the SenseIi Mine disaster.

*Dolika Banda for stepping down from her lucrative job as ZCCM-IH Chairperson over what she saw as irregular transactions amidst political interference. She felt she could not fairly represent the people of Zambia and their mining interests in the face of these irregularities and political interference. She thought it was honourable to give up her lucrative job than to succumb to political interference glossing over these irregularities which were unfair to the Zambian people.

*Save Zambia group for cancelling Copperbelt rally due to sensitivity to the families of victims and community in the Senseli Mine disaster. They decided to cancel the rally even though this was first rally that the police had not indicated they would stop.

*Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa for stating that he would not stand for UPND Presidential Campaign Team member, Beene Hachoombwa’s, agenda to marginalize PF supporters and deny them jobs and business contracts.

*Former Registrar of Societies Thandiwe Mhende-Phiri in the face of tremendous pressure and knowing that her job was on the line, releasing party records as they stood at the time of High Court request. She did not effect changes as she thought it was only fair that she considers whether the PF Constitution had been followed.

*Kwela Trust for feeding, during this festive season, over two hundred vulnerable children and their minders. This is something they have been doing the last ten years.

*Mrs. Mulambwa Manengu Gondwe the head of Sisabelo Saka School which provides quality education for visually impaired children. Her love and dedication to having the visually impaired have a fair and equal chance in life draws her to selfless dedication.

The above are my nominees for the “Zambia 2023 Fair Play Award.”

President HH Reflects on 27 Years of Mayoba Ranch and Encourages National Development

0

In a recent visit to the Mayoba Ranch in Zimba District, Southern Zambia, President Hakainde Hichilema and First Lady Mutinta Hichilema reflected on their 27-year journey with the asset. The presidential couple took a moment to appreciate the ranch’s growth since its inception, emphasizing the values of patience, hard work, and dedication that have contributed to personal, family, and national development.

The President shared the sentimental connection they hold with Mayoba Ranch, noting that they began managing the ranch as a young couple. During their visit, the First Lady actively engaged in harvesting wild okra (Delele), a tradition they have enjoyed since the ranch’s establishment.

Expressing admiration for fellow citizens who have embraced self-employment and food cultivation, President Hichilema highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to create a conducive environment for such initiatives. He urged individuals and the nation as a whole to stay focused on their goals while actively participating in constructive debates that contribute to Zambia’s economic stability.

President Hichilema conveyed a message of optimism, emphasizing that Zambia’s journey to economic stability is a gradual process that requires collective effort.

Hakainde Hichilema writes:

Earlier today, we took time to check on our Mayoba Ranch in Zimba District of Southern Zambia.

We have been on this asset for 27 years now, and we started running it when we were just a young couple with the First Lady, Mutinta Hichilema.

The First Lady also plucked some delicious wild okra (Delele) and we have been enjoying this relish since inception.

Having been on this ranch for 27 years, we came to appreciate the fact that patience, hard work, and more work lead to personal, family, and national development.

We continue being impressed with our fellow citizens who have escalated their desire to venture into self employment, growing food for themselves while as government we continue playing our role of creating a conducive environment for all.

Let’s remain focused as individuals and as a nation, while engaging in health debates that Zambia will surely realise its dream of becoming economically stable. It is one step at a time.

May God bless every hand working hard out there.

Disciples: Watch the three-part BBC documentary on ‘The Cult of TB Joshua’

The late Temitope Balogun Joshua, popularly known as T. B. Joshua
British public broadcaster (the BBC) has shown the widely-publicized investigative documentary on a powerful African pastor who subjected his members to horrifying human rights abuses.

The pastor in question turned out to be the late globally feted Nigerian Prophet T.B. Joshua of the Synagogue, Church of All Nations (SCOAN).

BBC in the wee hours of January 8, 2024; released a three-part series each averaging 50 minutes of the film titled DISCIPLES: The Cult of TB Joshua.

There is an exclusive screening scheduled in Accra, on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

In the videos seen by GhanaWeb, some of Joshua’s victims narrated extensively the alleged horrifying experiences they went through.

Most spoke out of deep pain, while others sobbed, stating among others that they were under the pretext that they were, individually, the only ones Joshua was abusing, unaware that it involved many others.

Some of the victims, who happened to be close associates of Johsua spoke about his love for money, manipulation of his disciples and his confessed vow to retaliate for the excesses of colonialism.

There was also the part about how Joshua had become influential in political circles with flamboyant visits to presidents and similar visits to SCOAN by African leaders.

Temitope Balogun Joshua, popularly known as T. B. Joshua, was a Nigerian charismatic pastor, televangelist, and philanthropist.

He was the leader and founder of SCOAN, one of the continent’s leading megachurches that runs the Emmanuel TV television station from Lagos. Born on June 12, 1963 in Ondo, Nigeria, Joshua died on June 5, 2021, at his base in Lagos, Nigeria.

Inside TB Joshua’s 20 years of violence, torture, abortions, ‘fake miracles’ in Lagos

0

Evidence of widespread abuse and torture by the founder of one of the world’s biggest Christian evangelical churches has been uncovered by the BBC.

Dozens of ex-Synagogue Church of all Nations members – five British – allege atrocities, including rape and forced abortions, by Nigeria’s late TB Joshua.

The allegations of abuse in a secretive Lagos compound span almost 20 years.

The Synagogue Church of All Nations did not respond to the allegations but said previous claims have been unfounded.

TB Joshua, who died in 2021, was a charismatic and hugely successful preacher and televangelist who had an immense global following.

The BBC’s findings over a two-year investigation include:

Dozens of eyewitness accounts of physical violence or torture carried out by Joshua, including instances of child abuse and people being whipped and chained

Numerous women who say they were sexually assaulted by Joshua, with a number claiming they were repeatedly raped for years inside the compound

Multiple allegations of forced abortions inside the church following the alleged rapes by Joshua, including one woman who says she had five terminations

Multiple first-hand accounts detailing how Joshua faked his “miracle healings”, which were broadcast to millions of people around the world

One of the victims, a British woman, called Rae, was 21 years old when she abandoned her degree at Brighton University in 2002 and was recruited into the church. She spent the next 12 years as one of Joshua’s so-called “disciples” inside his maze-like concrete compound in Lagos.

“We all thought we were in heaven, but we were in hell, and in hell terrible things happen,” she told the BBC.

Rae says she was sexually assaulted by Joshua and subjected to a form of solitary confinement for two years. The abuse was so severe, she says she attempted suicide multiple times inside the compound.

The Synagogue Church of All Nations [Scoan] has a global following, operating a Christian TV channel called Emmanuel TV and social media networks with millions of viewers.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, tens of thousands of pilgrims from Europe, the Americas, South East Asia and Africa travelled to the church in Nigeria to witness Joshua performing “healing miracles”. At least 150 visitors lived with him as disciples inside his compound in Lagos, sometimes for decades.

More than 25 former “disciples” spoke to the BBC – from the UK, Nigeria, US, South Africa, Ghana, Namibia and Germany – giving powerful corroborating testimony about their experiences within the church, with the most recent experiences in 2019.

Many victims were in their teens when they first joined. In some of the British cases, their transport to Lagos was paid for by Joshua, in co-ordination with other UK churches.

Rae and multiple other interviewees compared their experiences to being in a cult.

Jessica Kaimu, from Namibia, says her ordeal lasted more than five years. She says she was 17 when Joshua first raped her, and that subsequent instances of rape by TB Joshua led to her having five forced abortions while there.

“These were backdoor type… medical treatments that we were going through… it could have killed us,” she told the BBC.

Other interviewees say they were stripped and beaten with electrical cables and horse whips, and routinely denied sleep.

On his death in June 2021, TB Joshua was hailed as one of the most influential pastors in African history. Rising from poverty, he built an evangelical empire that counted dozens of political leaders, celebrities and international footballers among his associates.

He did, however, attract some controversy during his lifetime when a guesthouse for church pilgrims collapsed in 2014, killing at least 116 people.

The BBC’s investigation, which was carried out with international media platform Open Democracy, is the first time multiple former church insiders have come forward to speak on the record. They say they’ve spent years trying to raise the alarm, but have effectively been silenced.

A number of our witnesses in Nigeria claim they were physically attacked, and in one case shot at, after previously speaking out against the abuse and posting videos containing allegations on YouTube.

A BBC crew that attempted to record footage of the church’s Lagos compound from a public street in March 2022 was also fired at by the church’s security, and was detained for a number of hours.

The BBC contacted Scoan with the allegations in our investigation. It did not respond to them, but denied previous claims against TB Joshua.

“Making unfounded allegations against Prophet TB Joshua is not a new occurrence… None of the allegations was ever substantiated,” it wrote.

Four of the British citizens who spoke to the BBC say they reported the abuse to the UK authorities after escaping the church. They say no further action was taken.

In addition, a British man and his wife emailed eyewitness accounts of their ordeal and video evidence – including recordings of being held at gunpoint by men describing themselves as police who are also members of Scoan – to the British High Commission in Nigeria in March 2010 after fleeing the church. In his email, the man said his wife had been repeatedly sexually assaulted and raped by Joshua. He warned the commission that other British nationals were still inside the compound facing atrocities.

He also says no action was taken.

The UK Foreign Office did not respond to these claims, but told the BBC that it takes all reports of crime, including sexual assault and violence against British nationals overseas, very seriously.

Scoan continues to thrive today, under the leadership of Joshua’s widow, Evelyn. In July 2023, she led a tour of Spain.

Anneka, who left Derby in the UK to join Scoan at the age of 17, told the BBC she believes there are many other victims who have yet to speak out. She hopes further steps will be taken to uncover Joshua’s actions.

“I believe the Synagogue Church of All Nations needs a thorough investigation into why this man was able to function for so long the way he did,” she said.

INDIA PRAISES ZAMBIA FOR PRUDENT MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES AS CHANDA PRESENTS HIS CREDENTIALS

NEW DELHI—The Indian Government has praised Zambia for the prudent management of resources and has pledged steadfast support to the country in various viable sectors of the economy to spur the desired development.

Indian President Smt. Droupadi Murmu made the commitment on Friday after Zambia High Commissioner to India Percy P. Chanda presented his credentials at a colourful ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India.

President Murmu highlighted the longstanding historical connection between Zambia and India, stretching back to pre-colonial times. She reiterated her country’s pledge to remain a vital part of Zambia’s developmental journey, crediting this commitment to the Government’s emphasis on prudent resource management.

She expressed satisfaction at the transparent utilisation of the Lines of Credit offered to Zambia by India and that more could be achieved in strategic sectors such as health, mining, agriculture, infrastructure, and agro-processing.

“India has been part of Zambia’s development journey and our warm bilateral relations, which date back to the pre-colonial era, have been of great value to both countries and because of these warm relations, we have had high-level visits from both countries.

“India has provided Lines of Credit to Zambia and we are happy with the prudent manner in which you are utilising resources. As a result, we commit to continuing to support Zambia. We recognise the country’s potential in mining, agriculture, and agro processing, and we believe these are key in Zambia’s quest to attain national development,” President Murmu said.

The President implored the Zambia High Commissioner to ensure that the two countries continued to explore other areas of development cooperation during his tenure.

And Mr. Chanda thanked the Indian Government for being an all-weather ally even in difficult times, as evidenced by the assistance rendered to Zambia during the pandemic.

He also lauded the Indian Government’s magnanimity during its tenure as President of the G-20, emphasizing its significant strides in representing the Global South. Particularly noteworthy was India’s instrumental role in securing the admission of the African Union into the G-20, transforming it into the G-21 Intergovernmental forum upon the conclusion of its presidency.

He further added that Zambia looked forward to President Hakainde Hichilema undertaking a State Visit to India this year, as both countries commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations, emphasising the visit’s potential to further enhance the existing bilateral ties.

Artificial womb technology has potential to save thousands of premature newborns

0

Scientists have created a fake womb that might help premature babies. It looks like something from a science fiction story, but it could be used to save babies very soon.

A group of people at the hospital made a strange bag that imitates the fluid-filled space inside a mother’s womb. This is where babies get used to breathing in liquid instead of air.

The artificial womb helps premature babies grow until their lungs are more developed and ready to breathe on their own.

Dr Emily Partridge said the plan is to help people through difficult times until they can manage on their own.

Babies that are extremely premature are born before 28 weeks of the normal 40-week pregnancy. About 6 out of every 100 babies are born in the UK right now, which is around 3,200 babies. Babies born at 22 weeks have a 10% chance of survival, but before 22 weeks the chance is almost zero.

The team tested their new device on baby lambs that were born early, about the same as a baby born at 23 or 24 weeks.
A baby sheep in a machine that acts like a mother’s womb.

The baby lambs were put in a machine that acted as a womb, and their umbilical cords were connected to a device that gave them oxygen and pumped blood through their bodies, just like it would happen in their mother’s womb. The liquid, created in a lab to copy the fluid in the womb, was then used to help the lamb breathe like normal.

The tests went really well, so now the team wants permission to test the device on people.

The animals showed normal or increased activity, slept at regular times, breathed and swallowed occasionally, and seemed comfortable and not stressed, said the team.

One problem is that parents of premature babies might feel overwhelmed and emotional, making it difficult for them to make a fully informed decision about the trial.

Yale University’s Mark Mercurio said that he thinks the good things about the artificial womb could be more important than the risks for babies born very early, when they have less than a 20% chance of living.

Dr Partridge said the project taught him to never give up. “You have to keep trying, keep going until you succeed. ”

However, it can’t make babies grow completely in a lab, which is a dream for some science fiction writers.

Dr Alan Flake, a team member, has said that this idea is just a simple but exciting idea without much technical or developmental knowledge.

Putin spends billions on war leaving Russians abandoned in -30°C

0

Vladimir Putin is using a lot of money for his war in Ukraine. This has caused people in Moscow to be very cold because they don’t have heating or hot water.

The temperature in the capital dropped to -30°C, and the old heating system is said to not be able to handle the cold weather.

This means that over 20,000 people were left freezing in their homes for several days because of the cold temperatures.

A husband and wife, along with their dog, died from breathing in carbon monoxide while trying to stay warm in the city of Kolomna, in the Moscow region.

A video on Telegram shows windows and doors covered in ice because of the cold weather. People were burning wood on the streets to stay warm.

At the same time, pipes broke in many buildings, making things even worse for people.

There are rumors about an incident at a big ammunition factory in Klimovsk. Some people think it’s related to the problems there.

Reports say that the boiler house at the local cartridge plant in Klimovsk is broken, and it is the only source of heat for the town.

Government officials learned about the problem from social media where many residents were complaining.

On January 5, people in the town protested on the main square because the temperature in their apartments dropped to -10°C.

Some signs saying ‘SOS – We are freezing – Punish the guilty’ were seen, but officials don’t know when heating will be fixed.

A video about a protest said: “They haven’t promised anything since yesterday. ” Grandmas are very cold in their house.

“Kids wearing coats are unwell and coughing. ” The hospitals and everywhere else feels very cold.

“We need to fix this problem. ” We still don’t know who is responsible, and all we hear are excuses.

Someone living here complained: “The police came fast to stop us. ” I hope they bring back the heat as quickly as they sent the police to break us up.

In Lytkarino, a town in Moscow region, a power station stopped working. People had to make fires outside in the cold to stay warm.

Other interviewees say they were stripped and beaten with electrical cables and horse whips, and routinely denied sleep.-BBC

Stop this talk that blackmails the good people of Southern Province to think that other tribes hate them- Patrick Samwimbila Munali Advises HH

Patrick Samwimbila Munali aka Guy Wapa Eaze wrote

A FEW THOUGHTS FOR YOU MR. PRESIDENT

At least on a Sunday and the first Sunday of the year for that matter, I would like to share some honest and objective thoughts with President HH.

1. Sir, in this new year please reduce on self-praise and boasting; Its like you are insulated and you are out of touch with reality. Try for once to listen to the common people on ground and to your critics, you will realize that everything you boast about have no impact on the lives of our people.

2. Sir we are proud your farms and animals are doing very well, we have also just seen the State House and Presidential Affairs budget for this year standing at about 21.17 Million US Dollars which is really very fat. So Mr President I implore you to try hard to better things in the nation so that your citizens can also live a dignified life. Please find solutions to the choking high cost of living, work had to stabilize the exchange rate (Dollar @ 26 is too much). Zambia has never experienced such harsh conditions of living and of doing business before.

3. Sir, please stop sounding like Zambians have never worked hard, they are all lazy and have no capacity to think and choose how best to manage their lives. Lectures about buying tractors, keeping animals, or buying center pivots are not for everyone. Just create an enabling business environment and people will invest differently in their businesses of choice and size. Create meaningful empowerment programs for our youths who voted for you on the promises that their weekends will be lit.

4. Sir, please protect our democratic space from shrinking further; put a stop to the emerging dictatorial indicators your party and most critical institutions of governance are championing. Imagine the idea of denying opposition political parties the opportunity to hold public rallies, imagine the illegal disqualification of eligible candidates from contesting in by – elections, imagine mingalato of sponsoring divisions in opposition political parties, imagine the arbitrary arrests of members of opposition and anyone with opposing views. Please listen to voice of the church and civil society organizations. Stop silencing them by calling them names or aligning them to the former ruling party.

5. Sir, please lead by example to unite the nation. Stop this talk that blackmails the good people of Southern Province to think that other tribes hate them and that they were segregated against during the previous regimes. You like repeating these words every time and then; during your 4 hours close of the year presser and during your rally at Masuku grounds in Choma you kept emphasizing the same sentiments, please stop it you are now the President for all.

6. Please Sir, this year kindly reduce on your international travels because it is a huge drain on the already crawling economy. It’s better for you to seek homegrown solutions by calling an indaba of all local experts in different fields, opposition political parties, the church, civil society, the Chiefs and other interest groups regardless of their political affiliation in order to brainstorm and find lasting solutions to the many problems the country is faced with. I SUBMIT.

I pray you will have a chance to read these thoughts, but alas! because of the insulation I have refered to, your gatekeepers will not share it with you.

I HAVE CONFIDENCE IN UPND GOVERNMENT-CHIEF CHIKWANDA

January 7, 2024

Chief Chikwanda of the Bemba-speaking people in Mpika District has commended New Dawn-aligned development policies, adding that he is not ashamed of supporting the government that is transforming the lives of people.

Chief Chikwanda charged that within two years in government, UPND has proved to the Zambian people that it was elected to serve Zambian citizens without favor.
“I would like to thank his excellence, President Hakainde Hichilema, and his leadership for prioritizing policies that are aimed at bridging the gap in development between urban and rural areas. With the increased Constituency Development Funds CDF, we are now able to see massive development in the form of infrastructure, skills training grants, loans, etc.,” said Chief Chikwanda.

The UPND media reports that the traditional leader was speaking when Minister of Commerce, Trade, and Industry Chipoka Mulenga and Shiwang’andu aspiring candidate Chilumba Chanda paid a courtesy call on him at his palace.

Dual are in Muchinga to drum up support for the UPND candidate in Kapamba and Mayembe wards of Shiwang’andu and Mpika Constituency, respectively, ahead of the forthcoming local government by-elections.
Meanwhile, speaking at the same event, Chief Chikwanda has appealed to all councilors across the country to work closely with the traditional leadership.

The traditional leader added that effective service delivery to the people can only be realized if there is an integration between traditional and civic leadership.
The traditional leader further charged that equal distribution of the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) also signifies the willingness of the New Dawn government to uplift and safeguard the welfare of every Zambian.

The Chief acknowledged that the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) have fostered unprecedented levels of development, especially in rural communities.
He added that CDF is an effective tool in actualizing the decentralization policy, which has so far empowered the grassroot communities to determine the course of development.
The traditional leader observed that the region has witnessed an all-encompassing developmental agenda through CDF, which is making people’s participation in the development process effective.

Meanwhile, Minister of Commerce, Trade, and Industry Chipoka Mulenga says the government remains committed to transforming the lives of people.
Minister Mulenga said the vision of the UPND government is to improve the lives of every Zambian.

He further reaffirmed the government’s intentions to construct the chief palaces.
Chipoka Mulenga, who is also a Chingola area member of Parliament, added that the New Dawn government always values traditional leadership in its quest to foster development.

Uproar as Nigerian man, 54, marries four-year-old girl to ‘save her from death’

0

A 54-year-old Nigerian man is said to have married a four-year-old girl on December 26, 2023
The marriage between a four-year-old ‘bride’ and a 54-year-old man in Nigeria’s oil-rich Bayelsa community is a traditional rite to save the child’s life, the girl’s parents have said.

After hearing from the child’s parents, the traditional ruler of the community and other rights groups, we have ceased fire and let sleeping dogs lie,” Dr Abayomi Alabi, Director of Child Rights International, told NMG in Abuja on Sunday.

We were ready to free the poor girl from the perceived abuse, but the explanation came at a good time to defuse the tension the incident had generated,” he said.

The marriage, which took place in the Akeddei community in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa on December 26, 2023, was explained as a spiritual rite to ‘untie’ the duo, who were betrothed in their ‘previous lives’.

Public outcry
The girl’s parents, the 54-year-old man, the traditional ruler and others, who participated in the marriage, were summoned by the Bayelsa Government following a public outcry.

The parents of the ‘bride’ and three others appeared before the state government’s Gender Response Initiative Team (GRiT) to explain their role in child marriage.

The government team comprised the Chairperson of GRiT, Dr Dise Ogbise-Goddy, and the Bayelsa State Coordinator of the Child Protection Network, Kizito Andah.

Others were the Chairman of Bayelsa Non-Governmental Forum, Mr Taritei Boco and representatives of the DO Foundation, National Human Rights Commission and Civil Society Groups.

The team heard submissions from the father of the child, Mr Morris Aboma, the “groom”, Mr Akpos Napoleon and the Paramount ruler, Chief Moneyman Binabo.

In their separate submissions, they all insisted that the purported child marriage was a traditional practice termed “Koripamo” aimed to save the little girl’s life.

Cultural practice
They explained that it was a cultural practice in Akeddei community, Oyakiri clan, that if a girl child always fell sick, a man would be required to drop a symbolic amount as a token to save the little girl from dying.

The community representatives said that what happened between the little girl and Mr Napoleon was not a marriage but a cultural practice called ‘Koripamo’ in their tribe, Ijaw.

They further explained that whenever the traditional rite of ‘Koripamo’ was conducted, the man who paid the token was not required to take the girl as a wife and the traditional rite would also not stop the girl from marrying any man of her choice when she is of marriage age.

According to the Ijaw tradition, this rite can also be done on a boy child.

The Father of the child, Aboma, who spoke in Ijaw language, said his daughter was always sick to the point of death and explained that according to Akeddei tradition, the only way to save her life is for a man to pay a symbolic price and save the child’s life and that it had nothing to do with a real marriage.

According to the “groom”, the outcry that trailed the rite is regrettable as all he did was just to save the child’s life as she is no longer sick again.

He said that such tradition had been going on but it had not been elaborately celebrated with fanfare like the December 26, 2023 event which drew widespread outrage.

“But since she says if I don’t do what she says she will die, I had to look for money and do it since it involves life; as it is, I am frustrated by this whole issue,” Napoleon lamented.

The paramount ruler of Akeddei community, Binabo said he heard of a marriage in the community during the festivities.

The traditional ruler said that he did not, however, have full details, not until the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Sagbama Police Station asked him to produce those who got married in the community.

Binabo further said he had to invite the parents of the little girl to get detailed information about what happened.

He said the parents told him that the little girl had been sick and that one Napoleon had to drop a symbolic amount of money.

He emphasised that what happened in the Akeddei community was not a formal marriage but a fulfilment of cultural practice.

He, however, said that what surprised him was the demand of the little girl for an elaborate ceremony involving food, a canopy and a music system to be hired to celebrate the marriage.

He noted further that the man who paid the token to the girl was neither expected to take her home to live as husband and wife, nor stop the girl from marrying any other person of her choice when she got old enough to marry.

Dr James Omietimi at the GRIT office and that the child was living a normal life with no relationship with the 54-year-old.

Immediately after the meeting, the Chairman of GRIT, Ogbise Goddy stated that the deliberation was frank and fruitful and promised to give further updates on the matter.

Traditional marriage
She said that the Bayelsa Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Social Development and all stakeholders would review the situation and take a decision.

Child rights advocacy groups in Bayelsa and some concerned Nigerians kicked against the traditional marriage and described the marriage as illegal, criminal and a child marriage, which is against the constitution and the Child Rights Act.

Mr Elvis Mannie, Bayelsa Chairperson of DO Foundation, in a statement condemned child marriage as horrendous, despicable, and a criminal activity.

He said the act was capable of retarding the giant strides made by the government and people of Bayelsa in the area of protection of child rights.

”This law criminalises child marriages and child betrothals, prescribing various terms of imprisonment and heavy fines,” the foundation noted.

Uganda denies reports of Nigeria rejecting its degrees

0

The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has denied any knowledge of claims that Uganda is among the African countries whose degree certificates risk being rejected by Nigeria over authenticity issues.

Prof Mary Okwakol, the executive director of NCHE, at the weekend said Uganda has not received any complaint about academic papers issued by institutions here.

“We have not received any complaint from any individual, institution or authority in Nigeria regarding degree certificates awarded by universities in Uganda. One of the core functions of NCHE is to receive and investigate complaints relating to institutions of higher learning and take appropriate action,” Prof Okwakol said.

News website Ghanaweb on Thursday reported that Nigeria had suspended accreditation and evaluation of degree certificates from Benin and Togo, and that similar sanction would be extended to more countries, including Uganda, Kenya and Niger.

It was reported that Nigeria’s Minister of Education Tahir Mamman confirmed the proposed sanction while appearing on Chennels Television.

It was also stated that an undercover journalist with Daily Nigeria newspaper voluntarily testified how he had allegedly acquired a degree from a university in Benin after studying for only two months, after which he was deployed in the National Youth Service Corps.

Prof Okwakol said it would be prudent for the concerned country to avail information in case they came across fake degrees for necessary action to be taken. “In this case, there is need for the complainants to furnish us with information such as the specific degree certificates that have been found to be fake and the institutions that awarded,” she said.

An educationist, Ms Rose Stella Akongo, the principal of Luigi Giussani Institute of Higher Education Kampala, said a degree obtained in under two months sounds like a joke.

She warned intending students against falling prey to institutions that may be offering substandard courses to avoid wasting their time and money. Ms Akongo also advised them to desist from acquiring academic documents in a fraudulent manner.

“There are minimum credit units below which a degree programme cannot be accredited. I always tell people to find out if their institution is regulated by NCHE before they pay school fees in the name of studying for a programme whose rigour and robustness may fail to meet international minimum standards,” Ms Akongo said.

The Education ministry spokesperson, Mr Dennis Mugimba, said he could not comment on the matter before Uganda receives formal communication about the contentious issue. Last year, it was reported that a Ugandan student was denied an opportunity to upgrade in one of the universities in the United Kingdom on the ground that he had studied an expired undergraduate course in Uganda.

The issue raised concern, prompting the NCHE to task affected universities to submit to the council all programmes that were due for review not later than November 30 last year.

It was estimated that more than 1,500 study programmes in Uganda’s universities and other tertiary institutions of higher education were expired, a term that was later changed by NCHE to ‘due for review’. In October last year, Dr Vincent Ssembatya, NCHE’s director of quality assurance, confirmed that all institutions had a combined total of 2,395 out of 4,369 accredited degree programmes approved.

He, however, said the majority of the programmes were in the final stages of approval. Makerere University recently launched a probe into claims of fake degree awards.

In a November 9, 2023, statement issued by the university’ s Academic Registrar, Prof Buyinza Mukadasi, the management of Makerere tasked employers to verify afresh the degrees of employees who are Makerere alumni.

This was triggered by public concern that some people were able to get employed after submitting forged academic documents.

While addressing journalists in December last year, the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo’ University, Prof Eli Katunguka, admitted that some students acquire degrees in a fraudulent manner,.

“The names of four students who have been involved in an attempt to alter marks were removed from the graduation list and the IT staff who were helping them to change marks were arrested,” Prof Katunguka said.

He also noted that Kyambogo University was concerned about students whose names don’t appear in authentic graduation booklets due to failure to fulfil graduation requirements but fraudulent fix their names in forged booklets that they share with parents.

He said university management has on several occasions been attacked by parents who are given forged booklets containing their children’s names, which are never read out during the graduation ceremony.

Prof Katunguka also warned that the university would revoke degrees of students who obtained them in a fraudulent manner as soon as the facts are availed to management. There are also reports that some Ugandans use genuine academic documents that don’t belong to them.

WHEN WILL M’MEMBE, MWAMBA, EDGAR BUILD A TOILET FOR THEIR RELATIVES IN VILLAGES USING THEIR PERSONAL MONEY AS HICHILEMA DID WHEN IN OPPOSITION?

WHEN WILL M’MEMBE, MWAMBA, EDGAR BUILD A TOILET FOR THEIR RELATIVES IN VILLAGES USING THEIR PERSONAL MONEY AS HICHILEMA DID WHEN IN OPPOSITION?

By Koswe Editors

Zambians! There should be a time when you all come together and say, if you want to be President and earn our votes and you becoming rich on our heads, show us even a toilet you have built for relatives in your villages.

This was the demand the losing and bitter PF tribalists faction led by Edgar placed on Hichilema before you voted for him as President.

Hichilema, in his over 20 years political journey, he was made to go through a lot and as philanthropist, he built lots of schools, health centers, drilling boreholes, taking people’s children to school among others and across the country.

Isn’t this the time that the 2.8 million voters that voted for Hichilema to demand that these noise makers from the PF faction led by Edgar should be showing?

When is M’membe as opposition leader or foreigner Emmanuel Mwamba whose true identity is Henry MWENJENGA, Sean Tembo or indeed Edgar going to build toilets in their villages? We actually think that this Hichilema government which is very sober would just ask these opposition members to submit their toilet plans to local councils for approval and then they can start constructing toilets.

We don’t want to talk about Harry Kalaba. The man only built a tar road from a certain junction straight into his yard using government funds when he was Foreign Affairs Minister. As opposition leader, he has done nothing.

Ba opposition. This is free advice from us as Koswe. Prove to Zambians that you have balls to construct even toilets for your villages but remember that Hichilema and his UPND government are doing a lot through CDF but Zambians want to also eat your personal money.

As for Edgar. The man even when he was in opposition, President, he never built anything using his personal money but he is a very good hypocrite.

Zambians! Have you ever bothered to ask where that old woman he paraded with the help of Dora Siliya as his aunt is now or went? In fact, the Zambia Police and other investigative wings, must consider talking to Edgar and if there is no law in place, slap him with an offence of taking pecuniary advantage of a person with lapsing memories while parading them as your relative.

You can’t claim to give Zambians honey when you as opposition leader, you have failed to build even a toilet in your village. Charity begins at home. Build and show that when your wishful thinking comes true, you will encourage hardwork in the country and not stealing for yourself.

Having stated that, we hope to see Zambians demanding that these opposition leaders show what they have done for their villages before lying that they will take development to Zambians when in actual fact, they will be taking to their girlfriends in Salama Park, Eswatini, Russia and funding the MYANGA ZAYANUMA or vaseline movement kingpin Fred M’membe.

Kudos to Hichilema for these works you did when you were in opposition. You built Nchole, Mooya primary schools, built a clinic which Edgar refused to send health workers to and built another clinic which Esther Lungu commissioned but never acknowledged that it was your works. Sunk a lot of boreholes, took children to school and now not getting a government salary.

These (Hichilema) are the leaders with no plans of stealing from people but deliver and ensure development for all.

By the way. Edgar knows that Koswe was here and was in his government and we can confirm that we are here to stay. Whoever doesn’t like us, can go and hang a charged ZESCO pole or ask Emmanuel Henry MWENJENGA Mwamba why he has failed to build his father a toilet in Matero.

Koswe; Investigations only! Silelo tayamba!

When you read it on Koswe then it’s not FAKE News.

KOSWE’S RESPONSE TO MWAMBA

By Rick Nchito(Koswe)

At the rate at which we are going, President Hakainde Hichilema will do his two full terms without any serious challenges.

Clearly, there is no opposition in Zambia at the moment. All we are seeing are just bitter, ignorant jealous tribalists who can’t believe it that the person they said he will never rule Zambia is now occupying the highest office.

With the democratic space he has given them, opposition in Zambia were supposed to be providing real checks and balances including providing alternative solutions to what they think the UPND government is not doing right but alas, kuli manyengwe yeka yeka.

One example to show that there is no opposition in Zambia: PF left a huge debt mountain which the UPND administration is trying hard to resolve and clear.

Have you ever heard of any opposition leader giving an alternative solution to the debt issue on how they would want to resolve the PF debt?

HH and the UPND government have done everything possible to reach out to all creditors and soon the PF debt problem will be the thing of the past, though its effect is still being felt on the Zambia economy.

Instead of focusing on real issues, ba opposition are just preoccupied with just removing him from office at all cost because they feel he comes from a wrong place.

Without doubt, what HH has done for Zambia in 2 years and a few months is by way far too much and progressive than what Lungu did in 7 years.

Numbers and records are there to show. Employment of teachers, health personnel, agricultural officers, ZAF, Police, Zambia Army, Prisons, ZNS and Immigration.

HH has managed to restore the rule of law and he has restored sanity in markets and bus stations. He has ended cadrism. He has managed to pay all retirees in Zambia. He is now giving Zambian workers an opportunity to even get their 20% NAPSA partial withdrawal: very progressive.

He has managed to sign the Access to Information Bill into law, something which the PF were scared to do.

Immediately, he was given the mandate by Zambians in 2021, he removed the Defamation of the President law so that Zambians can say whatever they want to say about him as they exercise their freedom of expression: something PF and Lungu were scared to do.

What else has he done in 2 years, he has increased CDF from K1 million to now K30 million and that money is payable to all councils at the same time: something which never happened in PF.

What else has he done in two years, he has introduced FREE EDUCATION from Grade 1 to Grade 12. What else has he done, he has increased the number of college and university beneficiaries and put them on government bursaries. And he has reintroduced meal allowances which PF through Lungu and Nkandu Luo had scrapped off.

What else has HH done in two years, he has embarked on constructing modern Chief’s palaces across the country. The program which is currently underway.

The list is endless.

Is there an alternative to these things we have mentioned above?

What are we getting from the opposition: HH has built a Helipad at his Community House. Come on!

To start with, what is a Helipad? Isn’t a Helipad just a concrete slab where a Helicopter can land?

To an ignorant tribalist like Emmanuel Mwamba, HH having a Helipad at his Community House is a big issue which must lead to him being removed from the Presidency.

Emmanuel Mwamba, that Helipad is just a concrete slab which anyone can build including yourself if you stop investing your money in prostitution and alcohol.

Also take note that that Helipad has always been there even before HH became President. You were in Ethiopian and South African brothels with prostitutes during opposition days when Helicopters could land at Community House.

If he managed to build that Community House, how can he fail to put up just a concrete slab where a Helicopter can land?

Your thinking is worrying. We now understand why your wife had to be impregnated by that Director at Cabinet Office and leave you to raise your so-called last born. We challenge you to go for DNA and prove us wrong that that child is yours.

We will wait to see the results…

Remember! IF IT’S NOT ON KOSWE, THEN IT’S FAKE NEWS.

HH must resign because he is a Champion of failure- Dr Fred M’membe

HH MUST RESIGN AS ‘GLOBAL CHOLERA CONTROL CHAMPION’ – M’MEMBE

Lusaka, Sunday (January 7, 2024)
(PRESS RELEASE)

SOCIALIST Party President Dr Fred M’membe says the rise in cholera deaths signifies a collapsing healthcare system.

As of Saturday, January 6, 2024, Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) revealed that Cholera had claimed 195 lives out 5071 patients since it broke out in Zambia.

Speaking after he donated chlorine to residents of Lusaka’s Garden Compound, Dr. M’membe said President Hakainde Hichilema who was appointed in May 2022 at the World Health Assembly, in Geneva, Switzerland, as Global Cholera Control Champion, must resign because he is a Champion of failure.

He said the 2024 National Budgets has remained silent on financing the Multi-Sectoral Cholera Elimination Plan which was launched in 2019.

Dr. M’membe said the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Water Development and Sanitation analysis of the 2024 National Budget noted that as a share of the total budget, the allocation to WASH has dropped from 1.4% in 2023 to 1.3% in 2024, continuing a downward trend that began in 2021.

The SP President said the Government’s decreasing investment in WASH relative to the overall budget and other priorities is inconsistent with its stated goal of improving WASH services.

Dr. M’membe said it was heartbreaking to see people dying helplessly due to excessive congestion in health care facilities.

“What we are seeing now is indicative of a health care system, which is on the verge of collapse,” Dr M’membe said.

“Let Mr. Hichilema come out in the open and admit that he has failed to manage the cholera situation in the country, especially in Lusaka,” he said.

Dr. M’membe said the cholera outbreak has worsened owing to the UPND administration’s failure to heed calls from stakeholders in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector to increase the budgetary allocation, which has been declining yearly.

The SP President said with proper planning and mobilization of resources, the cholera situation would have been contained within a few weeks.

“In 2018, several stakeholders came on board and mobilized resources to help the government manage the cholera situation. So why are we failing to do this now?” he said.

The Opposition Leader has since urged citizens to practice good hygiene such as washing hands with soap, eating warm food, keeping the surroundings clean, and drinking treated or boiled water, and avoid large gatherings where possible.

This is contained in a statement issued by SP Media Director Brian Hapunda.

Call for the Resignation of the Inspector General of Police

Call for the Resignation of the Inspector General of Police

We, the undersigned Christian Coalition Zambia, are deeply concerned about the recent actions and
conduct of the Zambia Police Service under the
leadership of Mr. Grapheal Musamba.

It is with great dismay that we observe a pattern of bias and partisanship in the enforcement of law and order, which runs contrary to the principles enshrined in the
constitution and the rights of the Zambian people.

We take interest particularly in your directive that you will not allow political parties to hold rallies, which is a fundamental right of any political party in a democratic
system like ours
As the highest-ranking law enforcement officer in the
country, it is imperative that the Inspector General of
Police remains impartial and upholds the rule of law without prejudice or favoritism.

However, it has become
increasingly apparent that your allegiance seems to lie with the government rather than with the sacred duty of
protecting and serving all citizens equally.

The role of the police is to safeguard the rights and
liberties of every Zambian, regardless of their political affiliation or beliefs.

Regrettably, your actions have undermined this fundamental duty, eroding public trust in the institution and perpetuating a climate of fear and injustice.

In light of these grave concerns, we call upon you to tender your resignation from the position of Inspector
General of Police on moral ground.
It is our firm belief that a leader who is unable to discharge their responsibilities
with fairness and integrity has lost the moral authority to
continue in such a critical role.

We urge you to reflect on the gravity of the situation and
act in the best interests of the nation.

The resignation of
the current Inspector General of Police is necessary to
restore confidence in the impartiality and credibility of the
Zambia Police Service, and to reaffirm the commitment to
upholding the constitution and the rights of all Zambian people.

We trust that you will consider this request with the utmost
seriousness and take the appropriate course of action for the greater good of our beloved country.

Government’s Taxation Misstep Threatens Local Alcohol Industry and Public Health

Government’s Taxation Misstep Threatens Local Alcohol Industry and Public Health

By Daimone Siulapwa

As a political analyst deeply invested in Zambia’s democratic principles and an advocate for fair business practices, it is with great concern that I address the alarming issue plaguing the alcohol manufacturing sector in our nation.

The punitive taxes imposed by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and Ministry of Finance (MOF) have created a grim scenario where it is now more cost-effective to import alcohol than to manufacture it locally.

This misguided policy not only jeopardizes the survival of our local businesses but also fosters an environment conducive to smuggling and illicit brewing.

The repercussions of these exorbitant taxes are manifesting in the form of intensified smuggling of ethanol, a vital component in alcohol production.

Just recently, ZRA intercepted 80,000 litres of ethanol valued at 3.1 million kwacha which was smuggled into the country as hydrogen peroxide. What government must realise is that is just the beginning of a much bigger smuggling syndicate, which will obviously be facilitated by some greedy ZRA officials.

This illicit activity not only undermines the formal manufacturers in Zambia but also exacerbates the existing problem of counterfeit alcohol flooding COMESA market.

Shockingly, there seems to be a deafening silence on the part of authorities to address this rampant issue.

In a controversial move in 2023, government announced in the 2024 National Budget, that the Ministry of Finance and National Planning had altered the excise duty valuation for spirits, liqueurs, and other spirituous beverages in Zambia.

This change, though intended to create a fair and transparent tax system for the alcoholic beverages industry, poses a substantial risk to local manufacturers and may have far-reaching consequences.

The Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) acknowledged the government’s aim to reform the tax system, but raised concerns about the potential ramifications.

The shift to valuing excise duties based on market prices may seem reasonable on the surface, but it introduces significant challenges for local manufacturers.

These companies, committed to tax compliance, face higher production costs compared to traders importing cheaper goods from other countries.

The disparity in costs will excessively disadvantage manufacturing firms, creating an uneven playing field. They are now not only competing against non-compliant retailers, the informal sector, and illicit production but are also vulnerable to the influx of cheaper imported alcoholic beverages.

The altered valuation methodology gives imported products, especially from SADC member states, a distinct price advantage.
This change not only jeopardizes the competitiveness and quality of locally produced alcoholic beverages but also poses a threat to the local supply chain.

The potential rise in illicit activities such as smuggling and the production of illegal alcohol could have severe consequences for public health.

The lack of proper monitoring and assessment mechanisms, from production to sales, raises concerns about adherence to regulatory and health standards.

Moreover, the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and the Ministry of Finance’s introduction of punitive taxes is driving a concerning trend.

The exorbitant taxes on ethanol, a key component in alcohol production, are rendering it more economical for businesses to import finished alcohol rather than manufacture locally.

This not only discourages local manufacturing but also fuels smuggling and illicit brewing.

The issue of smuggling, particularly of finished alcohol products, is exacerbating the problem of counterfeit alcohol at COMESA market.

Shockingly, suspicions have been raised regarding the involvement of some ZRA officers in accommodating smuggling and potentially owning shops at COMESA.

A swift and comprehensive clean-up is urgently needed to curb this illicit trade that jeopardizes public health.

The new tax on ethanol has already led to a 100% increase in the prices of locally manufactured alcohol. This drastic spike not only threatens the survival of businesses but also puts numerous jobs at risk.

It is important for the government to recognize that taxing already burdened businesses to this extent is counterproductive and risks a huge decline in overall tax revenue collection in a long run.

In light of these developments, ZAM strongly recommends that the government reconsiders its approach and engages industry stakeholders, especially Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), to find a more balanced and sustainable solution.

Collaboration is essential to aligning the government’s revenue objectives with the growth and survival goals of the local manufacturing sector.

The future of Zambia’s alcohol industry and the well-being of its citizens hang in the balance.

Urgent action is required to rectify 5mthese punitive taxation measures, safeguard local businesses, and ensure the continued prosperity of the manufacturing sector.

In the pursuit of increased revenue, the government seems to have forgotten a fundamental economic principle – businesses cannot thrive under the weight of excessive taxation.

Lastly, I implore the Zambian government to heed this call for reform. The excessive taxation on ethanol must be revisited, and a comprehensive strategy to combat smuggling and counterfeit alcohol trade at the COMESA market must be implemented urgently.

Failure to address these issues promptly not only jeopardizes the future of the alcohol manufacturing sector but also undermines the very essence of a democratic and economically viable Zambia.

Shadreck Kasanda challenges seizure of his house in Lusaka’s Ibex Hill and vehicles by DEC

Kasanda reclaims his seized property from the State

BUSINESSMAN Shadreck Kasanda has now locked horns with the State in a legal battle over his seized wealth by the Drug Enforcement Commission after the thwarted gold scam at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport last August.

Kasanda wants the Economic and Financial Crimes Court to Compel the State to give him back his fully furnished house in Lusaka’s Ibex Hill and posh vehicles seized by the DEC as he earned the properties through his sweat.

After being incarcerated for four months the businessman’s joy of returning home to comfortable life was cut short when he and his espionage co-accused were released on bail by the High Court on November 28, 2023, as he established that he was roofless.

The shocking discovery of his properties being grabbed by the State and the eviction of his wife and children, the businessman rushed to Makebi Zulu’s law firm and asked him to draw up a legal defense in protest of his seized properties.

Kasanda has since cited the Attorney General as the respondent.

According to a petition before Court Kasanda of plot No. 19 main street, Ibex Hill Lusaka argued that on August 17, 2023 armed law enforcement officers comprising of the police and DEC raided his house without a warrant and turned it upside down in search of evidence only known to them.

He said the operation was conducted whilst his children were asleep in the wee hours of the day until midday when the officers asked him to accompany them to DEC offices for questioning.

Kasanda said after he was quizzed he was taken back to his home for another search and upon conclusion his house was confiscated pursuant to Section 15 of the Prohibition and Prevention of Money Laundering Act No. 14 of 2001, on reason that it was liable for seizure.

He argued that his house was acquired through legal means and the officers cannot grab it from him and deny him comfort.

Kasanda said the officers have deprived him of his property rights when they seized his fancy house on suspicion, without concrete evidence.

Kasanda lamented that his right to privacy was violated as the officers entered his premises without obtaining a search warrant from a magistrate.

He stated that his right to a fair trial have been trampled upon as the documents relating to his property are under seizure and it will be difficult for him to form a defense and his presumption of innocence has been jeopardized.

Kasanda is seeking a declaration that the DEC has no powers to seize his house.

Kasanda wants the EFCC to declare the the confiscation of his house and cars was illegal.

He is also seeking an order that the seizure of his properties without him being charged or tried for any offence under the Prohibition and Prevention of Money Laundering Act No. 14 of 2001 or the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No. 35 of 2021 violates his presumption of innocence.

He wants the Court to compel the commission to return his properties under its control.

Kasanda is also seeking damages for the inconvenience caused to his children who are minors for the mental anguish they have suffered upon losing soft life.

The businessman is further seeking damages for trespass and costs.

Since the US$ 5 million gold scam was unearthed at KKIA, trouble has found its place in Kasanda’s life as his other half as law enforcement officers have subjected him to scrutiny for crime.

As December 2023 came to and end the Zambia Revenue Authority recovered over K9.4 million in taxes from AFME Metal Exchange Limited in which he is a shareholder and director.

It was reported that the company was not tax compliant which led to the seizure of its account by the Drug Enforcement Commission pending further investigations into financial crimes.

PF member petitions Mundubile over illegal parliamentary appointment

PF member petitions Mundubile over illegal parliamentary appointment

A member of the Patriotic Front (PF) has petitioned the party in the Constitutional Court over Mundubile’s illegal appointment as leader of the opposition.

Moses Sakala wants Mundubile to reimburse all the money and allowances he obtained as leader of opposition before he was dislodged from his position, since his appointment in 2021.

The petitioner has cited the Attorney General and PF Secretary General Morgan Ng’ona as respondents in the matter.

Sakala says the PF violated the provisions of Article 74(2) of the Constitution, as amended, by appointing Mundubile without holding an election to select a the leader of opposition amongst the PF Members of Parliament.

He indicated that the former speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini equally violated the provisions of Rule 43 of the National Assembly standing orders, 2021, by recognizing a leader of the opposition, who was not appointed in accordance with the said rule and provisions of Article 74 (2) of the Constitution.

He said the party contravened Article 60(2)(d) of the Constitution by failing to exercise internal democracy as provided for under the said Article.

“By appointing a leader of opposition, the PF failed to exercise internal democracy and deprived other candidates from contesting the position of leader of opposition in an election,” Sakala said.

He wants the ConCourt to declare that the appointment of Mundubile as leader of opposition was null and void ab initio, as it was done in contravention of Article 74(2) of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 2 of 2016.

Sakala is seeking a declaration that the State through Matibini Contravened Article 74(2) of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 2 of 2016, as well as Rule 43 of the National Assembly Standing Orders, by accepting the appointment of Mundubile, as leader of the opposition and allowing him to enjoy privileges attached to the said office.

He wants the Court to decree that the PF contravened the provisions of Article 60(2)(d) of the Constitution by failing to exercise internal democracy as provided for under the said Article.

Sakala is further seeking an order that all monies accrued by Mundubile, by virtue of his illegal tenure of office, be accounted for and recovered.

Eastern Province Police Say they did not Arrest for EFF Leader Kasonde Mwenda

Zambia Police has clarified that they did not arrest Economic Freedom Fighters leader Kasonde Mwenda but only summoned and cautioned him for breaching the Public Order Act. Eastern Province Commanding Officer, Limpo Liywalii, explained that Mr. Mwenda was expected to hold a briefing at Chatowa Lodge but had to change the venue to near the Local Court after being denied permission at the Lodge. Liywalii added, “Mr. Mwenda informed the police about the briefing at short notice.”

In response, Mr. Mwenda stated that he had informed the police about the briefing but did not receive a response. This incident has sparked further debate on the political climate in Zambia.

Meanwhile, Citizens First president Harry Kalaba criticized the UPND government, predicting its loss of power due to ignoring the voices of relevant stakeholders, including church mother bodies, the Law Association of Zambia, and OCiDA, among others. Kalaba strongly condemned the actions of Inspector General of Police Graphael Musamba, accusing him of causing anarchy in the country with statements restricting opposition parties from holding rallies.

During a live radio appearance, Kalaba expressed his concerns, saying, “Mr. Graphael Musamba will end up in very big trouble. His job as IG is just to maintain peace and tranquility in our country. What he is proposing, he is proposing anarchy in our country.” Kalaba argued that there is no law allowing Musamba to permit or deny political party rallies, emphasizing that Musamba’s role is to maintain peace and order.

Kalaba also spoke about the UPND’s alleged failure to listen to important civil society voices. “UPND is losing power because it cannot listen to OCiDA, the Catholic Bishops, the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia, the Council of Churches in Zambia…they are going out because of this same thing of thinking they have achieved so much,” he stated.

Furthermore, Kalaba expressed concerns about President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership, citing issues like hunger in the country and the delay in fertilizer distribution to farmers. He criticized the president’s approach and emphasized the need for leaders to take responsibility. “The President doesn’t seem to know what he is doing,” Kalaba said, highlighting the importance of sincerity and accountability in leadership for Zambia’s progress.

‘Why is vote counting in South Africa done in secrecy?’ asks Zuma

In a first public challenge of its kind by a major public figure in the country, the integrity of South Africa’s electoral system has been put into sharp question by former President Jacob Zuma in today in an address to members of the All African Alliance Movement (AAAM) and of MK Party in Soweto, where he asked why vote counting in South Africa is done in secrecy.

Zuma says he is not surprised to hear some South Africans talking about rigging of elections. He said South Africans are concerned about potential for the rigging of the 2024 national and provincial elections.

Zuma said this during his speech at the political event organised by the All African Alliance Movement (AAAM) in Soweto on Friday.

Former Chief Justice Mogoeng’s party

The party where Zuma was the guest speaker is the one that former Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng ditched. At the time the party had lined Mogoeng Mogoeng up as their presidential candidate.

Zuma said there was too much secrecy in the South African electoral system that having doubt was a fair criticism.

According to Zuma, it was suspicious that after voting, the voter has no idea where their vote goes until the results are announced.

Zuma questions transparency of the electoral process

In an ideal world, the whole process should be transparent. This includes the counting of votes. He believes all that should be done publicly.

“We are going to the elections soon and there are people who believe the elections will be rigged. Some have information that the counting system will be changed to advantage a particular party. Where is the truth?” said Zuma.

“Maybe because they say majority rule has the right to change laws, we should change the voting system. Why is there so much secrecy in our voting system? Especially the counting that is done behind the scenes?

“Why is the counting not done transparently in front of everyone,” he added, before dropping the media mics on the podium. He later apologized for his action, saying “because I am very angry about this subject matter.”

Suspicions of vote-rigging

Zuma believes something is fishy in any system where, after voting, the counting is not done in front of everyone who voted.

“What are they hiding from those that have voted? These are the things that make those that have won to be declared losers. That is fraud.”

The current system was a far cry from what he and other freedom fighters fought for, he said.

“I did not fight for freedom only for my vote to become a subject of extreme secrecy. What is being hidden so much?”

Two-thirds majority will be game changer

Zuma said the Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party and other progressive parties must campaign to win the elections. He said a two-thirds majority win will enable them to change electoral legislation.

“It cannot be that people vote a particular way and then there are those with deep pockets who buy votes. That is blatant fraud.”

The democracy regime that South Africa has in its current form was a scam, he charged. He added that it was in the hands of traditional leaders and the clergy to mobilise their followers to vote for true democracy.

How Cody Coleman went from being born in prison to running a Silicon Valley startup

0

eet Cody Coleman; he is the co-founder of Coactive AI, a company that helps data practitioners and data-driven teams extract information from unstructured image and video data, integrating it into the realm of Structured Query Language.

Coleman’s story of success started from a humble beginning. He was born in prison and was subsequently placed in foster care before being adopted by his maternal grandparents. In elementary school, he developed an interest in computers and gaming, according to AfroTech.

While in his first year as a freshman, he built his first computer with the help of his brother. He noted that it was his brother who guided him to go past playing video games to create things using a computer. According to him, he found an escape through computers.

“Even on my best days, my future looked really bleak. So, computers actually started out for me as an escape,” Coleman told AfroTech. “I was really interested in video games, and I could just lose myself in this completely other world. Then my oldest brother, he started at college, but he dropped out of college, and got a job working at the University of Pennsylvania.”

“He helped me build my first computer and really showed me that I could go past playing video games and actually build and create things using a computer. That’s where the first spark for computer science ignited for me.”

Coleman was accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on a full ride in 2009. He went on to graduate with a GPA of 4.9 and obtain a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science. He subsequently got his masters and a PhD from Stanford University.

It was while at MIT that he met his co-founder William A. Gaviria Rojas. Together, they created Coactive AI to help people sort through several images in seconds. Coleman hopes his company will reach unicorn status soon. Through his work at Pinterest, Meta, and Google, Coleman is also working to democratize AI with his company.

The San Jose, CA-based startup that helps analysts to make image and video data useful raised $14m in combined seed and series A funding in March last year to expand operations.

Backers included Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, SV Angel, AME Cloud Ventures, Fei-Fei Li, Jure Leskovec, Eli Collins, Cloud All Star Fund, Next Play Capital, and Exceptional Capital.

Trump mimics Biden’s stuttering over anniversary of January 6

0

Former President Donald Trump didn’t talk about the third anniversary of the January 6 Capitol riot and made fun of President Joe Biden, who had called him a ‘loser’ in a speech earlier that day.

Trump had an event in Sioux Center, Iowa, on Friday. A few hours later, Biden gave a speech in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, criticizing his predecessor for his part in the deadly insurrection.

Trump spoke for almost two hours, saying the words ‘insurrection’ and ‘J6’, but he did not talk about the anniversary directly on Saturday.

Trump criticized Biden, saying that he stumbled over his words when he tried to call him a danger to democracy in Pennsylvania.

“Did you watch him. He was having trouble speaking the whole time. ” “He’s a danger to democracy. They are using the government as a weapon. ” “He’s a danger to democracy,” exclaimed Trump.

He said Biden can’t read or say ‘democracy’ and then he imitated the president, which got a reaction from his fans.

Trump copied Biden by pretending to have trouble finding the way out after a speech, and saying ‘he can’t walk off the stage’.

Besides not talking about the third anniversary of January 6, Trump only briefly mentioned related issues. Trump said his enemies are accusing him of causing a rebellion, he believes the crowd at the J6 event was the largest, and he thinks that no one in history has been treated as badly as the people who were arrested for the rebellion.

Trump talked mostly about his enemies and told his supporters to vote for him in the Iowa Caucus on January 15 during his rally.

In a brief speech in the afternoon, Biden strongly criticized Trump and compared his own campaign to General George Washington leading troops to win in the Revolutionary War.

Biden said Trump wants to attack democracy now and in the future.

Biden said that the first rally for the 2024 campaign had started with a group of people who were involved in the January 6 riot singing from prison on a phone, while videos of the riot played on a big screen behind him.

IG MUSAMBA WILL END IN COURT- warns Kalaba

IG MUSAMBA WILL END IN COURT

…he must be careful in the manner he is trigger happy, warns Kalaba

Lusaka, Saturday, January 6, 2024

CITIZENS First president Harry Kalaba says UPND government is going to lose power because it has ignored the voices of relevant stakeholders citing the church mother bodies, Law Association of Zambia, OCiDA among others.

He also says Inspector General of Police Graphael Musamba is causing anarchy in the country with his statements restricting opposition parties from holding rallies.

Featuring on Live Radio, Kalaba said Musamba should know that his job is to maintain peace and order in the country and not proposing anarchy.

“Mr Graphael Musamba will end up in very big trouble. Mr Musamba must know that this country is for all of us. His job as IG is just to maintain peace and tranquility in our country. It is not for him to add on a gate, no. His job is just to maintain peace and order in our country. What he is proposing, he is proposing anarchy in our country. It is not his space and we will prove before the courts of this country that Musamba is offside. There is no law that say a political party which doesn’t… so he wants political parties which will be vuvuzelas? Those are the ones that he will be allowing? Musamba and in any case, there is no provision within the law that allows Musamba to allow a political party to have a rally or not. It is just to notify him that we are going to have a meeting, that is what the public order Act says,” he explained.

“Mr Graphael Musamba is the one who is causing anarchy by issuing statements that are not supported by the law. And he must be careful in the manner he is trigger happy because this will not end well for him. That is why he is going to end up in courts. And in any case, some of these people should begin to learn. The UPND which he wants to associate himself so much with is going out in the next two years. The UPND is going out. that’s a fact.”

Kalaba said UPND is losing power because it does not want to listen to stakeholders.

“UPND is losing power because it cannot listen to OCiDA. They cannot listen to the Catholic Bishops. They cannot listen to the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia. They cannot listen to the Council of Churches in Zambia. If they cannot listen to these who are the custodians of the people’s voices, the people’s moral voices, they cannot listen to them, who will they listen to?” he wondered.

“Tell me what interest the Zambia [Conference of] Catholic Bishops have in partisan politics? Tell me what the Council of Chiurches would have? Tell me what CCZ interest would have in partisan politics? Just tell me what these civil society organisations’ interests would be, LAZ in partisan politics. Tell me what OCiDA’s interest would be in partisan politics. They do not have any interest in that. This is the problem with the UPND leadership and this is why UPND will lose power in 2026. Because if he can ignore the Conference of the Catholic’s voice, if you can ignore the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ), if you can ignore the Council of Churches, if you can ignore OCiDA, if you can ignore these progressive non-governmental organisations and indeed even your fellow players in the democratic space who are telling you there is shrinking democratic space, the truth of the matter is, they are going out because of this same thing of thinking they have achieved so much.”

Kalaba expressed worry that President Hakainde Hichilema does not seem to know what he is doing.

“He admitted and said we had travelled the world and when we travelled the world, results are beginning to show. The results that are beginning to show is that there is hunger in the country. The results that are beginning to show are that fertiliser to the farmers, most people have not yet gotten the fertiliser and they should have gotten it. The results that are beginning to show are that… We are worried ourselves on two or three fronts. We are worried first of all that the President doesn’t seem to know what he is doing,” said Kalaba.

“This is why our leaders as I said earlier on, for as long as our leaders will not be sincere, they would want to play hide and seek, throw responsibilities at junior officers who they clearly know are not the ones responsible for what they are asking them to do. Zambia will not go anywhere. I think we need to reach that threshold where we need to be taking responsibility as leaders, agreeing that this is our duty, it is the duty of cabinet to sit and review the monthly adjustments of fuel.”

Prince Andrew’ stayed weeks’ at Epstein residence – Witness

0

Prince Andrew was at Jeffrey Epstein‘s house in Florida for many weeks, according to new court documents. Epstein was a sex offender and a financier.

Juan Alessi, who took care of Epstein’s house in Palm Beach, said that the Duke of York slept in the guest room and got massages every day.

The testimony is in about 1,300 pages of evidence that came out on Friday.

The documents also show how Epstein found and used victims for sexual exploitation, which is troubling.

This week, a federal court ordered that many pages of legal documents be made public.

The legal documents are from a 2015 court case where someone accused Ghislaine Maxwell, who used to be Jeffrey Epstein’s girlfriend, of saying bad things about them.

In 2009, Mr. Alessi told investigators that Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson were friends of Epstein and Maxwell. The duchess didn’t do anything wrong and Prince Andrew says he didn’t do anything wrong either.

When asked if they ever got massages at the Palm Beach mansion, Mr. Alessi said, “Prince Andrew did. ”

He said the duchess came to the house for a short time, but Prince Andrew stayed with us for many weeks and got massages every day.

“I don’t know if he got more than one massage each day, but I think he only got one,” he said.

In a legal document that was made public this week, a person named Jane Doe 3 claims that she was made to have sex with Prince Andrew when she was 17. This allegedly happened in Maxwell’s apartment in London, in New York, and on Epstein’s private resort in the US Virgin Islands, along with other underage girls. This claim is not new, and the British royal has always said they did nothing wrong.

In 2019, the Duke of York told the BBC that he didn’t remember meeting Ms Giuffre. In 2022, he gave her money to settle her lawsuit for sexual assault, but didn’t admit he did anything wrong.

In the papers released on Friday, people said they were told to find and bring girls to Epstein.

Tony Figueroa, a person who used to work with Ms. Giuffre, said that Epstein and Maxwell gave $200 for each girl that went to the mansion.

Mr Figueroa said that when he was 19 years old, he was given money to bring young girls to Epstein’s house and he often saw other young women there.

The girls would talk to Maxwell in Epstein’s kitchen for 10 to 15 minutes before going upstairs to give a “massage”, according to the papers.

Mr Figueroa thought the girls were brought to give sexual favors to Epstein.

The legal papers show that Mr. Figueroa said “No” when he was asked if any of them were real massage therapists.

Mr Figueroa said that he often asked girls from his high school to join his group.

He did not ask how old they were, but he thought they were all 16 to 19 years old.

In 2009, Mr Alessi said he remembered seeing Donald Trump at Epstein’s mansion. Donald Trump owns the nearby Mar-a-Lago golf club.

The witness said Mr Trump had dinner with Mr Alessi in the kitchen, but never got a massage during any visit.

Mr Alessi said he also saw Bill Clinton on Epstein’s private plane.

Neither Clinton nor Mr. Trump are being accused of doing anything wrong in connection to their relationship with the disgraced financier.

The trove includes a document from 2010 where Adriana Ross, a former model and assistant of Epstein from Poland, gave a statement. She was mentioned in a 2007 agreement as someone who might have helped Epstein with his crimes.

They asked her if she knew that a former security adviser to President Clinton went to Epstein’s house three weeks after the police searched it in 2005.

The lawyer asked Ms. Ross if Mr. Berger, who passed away in 2015, had warned Epstein about the upcoming raid. She said no to answering.

She was asked if she knew that a friend of Epstein brought three 12-year-old girls from France to him for his birthday, and then sent them back the next day after sexually exploiting them.

She said: “I won’t answer. ”

The lawyer said that a French person, Jean-Luc Brunel, brought the girls here.

Ms Ross said no again. Brunel committed suicide in a Paris jail in 2022 while waiting to go to trial for rape.

A lot of the information that was made public this week was already talked about during Maxwell’s trial.

She is the daughter of a famous publisher, Robert Maxwell. In 2021, she was found guilty and is now in prison for 20 years for helping Epstein find people.

In 2008, Epstein admitted to paying for sex from a young person and in 2019 he died by suicide while waiting for trial for sex-trafficking.

Meghan Markle reportedly tried to arrange a meeting with King Charles: ‘Wants some answers’

0

Meghan Markle is said to be seeking explanations from King Charles regarding the perceived disparate treatment she and Prince Harry have faced compared to other royal family members.

Royal expert Neil Sean suggests that the Duchess of Sussex has attempted to arrange a meeting with her father-in-law to address her concerns.

“Meghan Markle wants some answers from His Majesty the King,” Sean said in a YouTube video. “She tried to set up a meeting with him, she sent him a letter and wanted a one-to-one to explain exactly the problems she’s encountered ever since becoming a member of the British monarchy.”

According to Sean, Markle is reportedly angered by the perceived double standards in public scrutiny. Sean claimed that the Duchess of Sussex is upset that she and Prince Harry face criticism for interviews and public projects, while other royals, like Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, engage in similar activities without backlash, according to the New York Post.

Markle is said to be particularly bothered by Fergie’s appearances on shows like “This Morning” and “Loose Women,” where she promotes herself as the Duchess of York, sells books, and potentially does advertisements—all while being associated with the Royal Family.

“Meghan and Harry seemingly don’t understand why it’s a different rule for her.”

After stepping down as senior members of the royal family in 2020 and relocating to the United States permanently, Harry and Markle have openly discussed their challenges with royal life through various projects. This includes Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” their revealing interview with Oprah Winfrey, and the Netflix documentary, “Harry & Meghan.”

The couple, married in 2018, faced criticism for divulging private details about their relationships within the royal family. Despite this, there is speculation, according to royal biographer Tom Quinn, that the Sussexes might return to royal duties, with only one stipulation standing in the way.

“I think it’s possible that Meghan could return but I think she would physically have to live in England and she would have to, very quietly, start to do the things that the royal family does best,” Quinn told the Daily Express last month.

“I don’t think she could come back if she wants an apology or if she wants the royal family to completely change. They just can’t do it, I just don’t think they will,” he added.

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has said he will be happy if Egypt crash out in the group stages of the AFCON 2023

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has said he will be happy if Egypt crash out in the group stages of the AFCON 2023

Star player, Mohamed Salah is away with Egypt for the tournament in Ivory Coast which will start on January 13.

If Egypt and Japan impress at the AFCON and Asian nations cup respective tournaments, that could mean Salah and Endo will not be back until the second week in February.

Speaking about the absence of the two players, Klopp said he sent them on their way this week without wishing them too much success.

“I said if I wish you good luck it would be a lie,” Klopp said ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup third-round tie at Arsenal on Sunday

“From a personal point of view, I would be happy if they go out in the group stage but that’s probably not possible. They can go on and win it.

“So it was ‘Good luck and come back healthy’. We have to deal with it and we will deal with it. I am pretty positive that we will find a way.”

Klopp does not really have a suitable replacement for Salah, who plays on the right side of his attack and has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season.

Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was touted as a potential option but he has been ruled out for at least two matches with a hamstring injury sustained in the New Year’s Day win over Newcastle.

But Klopp, whose side are top of the Premier League, is confident Liverpool can fill the hole left by Salah.

“I think we played against West Ham (in last month’s League Cup quarter-final) without Mo on that side and Harvey Elliott played there,” he said.

“We have different offensive options who can all play that wing in a different way. Nobody else can play like Mo, it is not possible — we just have to use the boys with their skills.

“Do we want to play without Mo? No. In the past we didn’t have to do it often but we always found a way.

“But we play Arsenal and you can lose to Arsenal with Mo Salah so it’s possible to lose to them without him.”

Nikki Haley explains why she has refused to rule out serving as Trump’s vice president

0

US Republican presidential candidate, Nikki Haley has said she won’t officially rule out being Donald Trump’s running mate if he offers her the job.

Haley’s rivals as well as some Republicans have speculated she’s really aiming for the No. 2 spot behind the 77-year-old businessman on the 2024 GOP ticket. Haley, a former South Carolina governor and former ambassador to the United Nations has maintained she’s not in the race to come in second, but has not specifically said she would refuse Trump’s offer.

But she has now revealed why she won’t refuse the offer publicly.

“First of all, it’s highly offensive to think I would go through all of this to run for vice president,” Haley told the New Hampshire Union Leader in an interview published Thursday, December 5.

“I am fighting to become president and I’m going to win,” she added.

Haley then predicted that ruling out being Trump’s VP would be “the news for days” and take the focus off her recent polling gains against Trump in New Hampshire, where one new survey has her within four percentage points of the 45th president.

In the US, Trump continues to dominate the primary polls by an average of 50 points over his nearest competition, per RealClearPolitics.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ campaign has particularly focused on the rumors about Haley wanting to run alongside Trump, launching a microsite to track the claims.

“She will not answer directly – and she owes you an answer to this – will she accept a vice presidential nomination from Donald Trump? Yes or no,” DeSantis himself said last month.

Those within Trump’s inner circle have publicly expressed fear the former president would seriously consider Haley for the job.

Former White House strategist Steve Bannon speculated earlier this week that a “big fight” will break out in the spring over the issue.

“They’re gonna try to force Nikki on the ticket,” Bannon said Monday on the “Human Events Daily” program. “They’ll say ‘Trump needs a woman, Nikki, on the ticket, she balances things and she can bring together that 15% of never-Trumpers in the Republican Party.’ We’re going to have to have that fight.”

Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr. said he would personally intervene if Haley was going to be his father’s VP.

“I wouldn’t have her and I would go to great lengths to make sure that that doesn’t happen,” he told Newsmax’s Eric Bolling in an interview in December.

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, a Trump supporter, also expressed heavy criticism, telling podcaster Tim Pool that “I would not only not vote for that ticket, I would advocate against it as strongly as I could.”

South Dakota Governor, Kristi Noem, also a Trump supporter, said the choice would be a “mistake,” but would not alter her backing of the ex-president.

“If he picked her, I would tell him I disagreed with him. But then I would support the ticket, because he’s still the president and the president still makes the decisions,” Noem told Bolling Tuesday.

Noem previously said she would accept the VP spot “in a heartbeat” if Trump were to offer her.

Supreme Court to decide whether Trump may contest for presidency

0

The highest court in the United States will decide if Donald Trump can run for president. This is an important and historic case.

The judges decided to hear Mr. Trump’s appeal because Colorado wouldn’t let him be on the 2024 ballot there.

The court will decide the case in February and the decision will affect the whole country.

Lawsuits in many states are trying to remove Mr. Trump from his position. They say he was part of a riot at the US Capitol three years ago.

The legal problems depend on whether a constitutional amendment from the Civil War time means Mr. Trump can’t run for president.

The Supreme Court agreed to hear Mr. Trump’s appeal after 27 state attorneys general asked them to reject Colorado’s decision.

They say that taking Mr. Trump off the ballot would cause a lot of problems.

“The submission says that it is causing confusion in the upcoming election. ”

Moreover, it disrupts the specific duties of the Congress, the States, and the courts.

The 14th Amendment of the US Constitution says that people who have rebelled against the government can’t hold federal office. However, the former president’s lawyers say this rule doesn’t apply to the president.

His lawyers say that if the Colorado Supreme Court decision is followed, it would unlawfully prevent many voters in Colorado from voting and could also be used as an example to prevent many more voters across the country from voting.

Mr Trump is fighting against a decision made by voting officials in Maine to take his name off the ballot.

After the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday, Colorado’s Secretary of State Jena Griswold confirmed that the state’s ballots for the next presidential primary elections have been approved and that Mr. Trump’s name will be on them.

The votes in each state will decide which people can run for president in the November election.

Colorado is scheduled for the start of March, shortly after the Supreme Court makes a decision on Mr.

Ms Griswold said that the Supreme Court of the United States has agreed to hear the case, and because of this, Donald Trump will be listed as a candidate on the ballot.

Last month, the Colorado high court made a decision with 4 judges in favor and 3 against. It’s the first time in US history that the 14th Amendment has been used to reject a candidate from running for president.

This is the first time the Supreme Court will think about what the clause means.

Mr Trump is the top Republican candidate to compete against President Joe Biden, who is a Democrat, in the upcoming November election.

Courts in Minnesota and Michigan have rejected attempts to remove Mr. Trump from his position. Other cases in Oregon are waiting for a decision.

The US Supreme Court mainly has conservative judges, and three of them were chosen by Mr. Trump when he was president.

However, they mostly decided he lost his lawsuits against Mr. Biden in the 2020 election.

The court will hear the case quickly and will have a debate about it on 8 February.

Mr Trump’s lawyers have to submit their first written arguments by January 18th.

The people who want Mr. Trump to be disqualified have to give their reasons by January 31st.

The top US court getting involved reminds people of the 2000 election between George Bush and Al Gore, which also went to the Supreme Court.

The court with mostly conservative judges stopped the vote recount in Florida, which helped Mr. Bush win the election.

Professor Cart Tobias from the University of Richmond says that the “very fast” process was expected and needed because there are more and more cases being filed in different states across the country.

With the state primary elections coming up soon, election officials in many states need to get ready and plan for smooth voting processes on short notice.

Cases at the Supreme Court usually take between four and 12 months, which is much longer than the few weeks currently set for justices.

The court will probably make a decision before the Super Tuesday election in March, when Colorado and other states will choose who they want to run for president.

On the day of the riot at the US Capitol, people who support Mr. Trump went into Congress while the lawmakers were officially declaring Mr. Biden as the winner of the election.

On that day, the former president spoke at a gathering outside the White House. He said things that were not true about the election and told the crowd to “fight like hell”, but also to walk “peacefully” to the Capitol.

People who disagree with Mr. Trump say he shouldn’t be allowed to be president because of what he did during the riot and because he tried to change the election result in states that he lost.

Mr Trump is being tried in federal court and state court in Georgia for trying to change the 2020 election result. But he has not been charged with inciting a riot in either case.

Biden criticises Trump for inciting Capitol riot in 2024 campaign speech

0

In his first speech to get elected in 2024, President Joe Biden said that he thinks Donald Trump could be a big problem for American democracy.

Mr Biden said that the most important question right now is whether democracy is still very important to America.

“He said that’s what the 2024 election is all about. ”

Mr Trump said the speech was filled with scary lies and called Mr. Biden a danger to democracy.

The former president said at a rally in Iowa that Biden has a consistent history of being weak, not able to do his job well, being dishonest and not succeeding.

Mr Biden’s speech talked about something he has been talking about a lot in recent years.

This time, he clearly connected the US Capitol attack on 6 January 2021 to support his argument.

That day, people who support Mr Trump went into Congress and used violence to try to stop the lawmakers from officially saying that Mr Biden won the election. This happened just a few weeks before Mr Biden was supposed to start as president.

Mr Trump keeps saying the wrong thing that he won the 2020 election, even though it’s not true.

The ex-president has tried to change how people see the attack on January 6th, calling it a “beautiful day. ” He has praised the people who were involved as “patriots” and “political prisoners” and said he would forgive them if he becomes president again.

Mr Biden said that Mr Trump is trying to twist history and kept criticizing Mr Trump by name.

Mr Biden said that the mob with Trump was not a peaceful protest, it was a violent attack. “They were rebels, not loyal citizens. ” They did not want to protect the Constitution, they wanted to ruin the Constitution.

“He calls people who disagree with him vermin. ” He said that Americans’ blood is being poisoned, using the same language as Nazi Germany.

The Trump campaign did not answer a request for comment right away.

Jason Miller, a top adviser for Donald Trump’s election campaign, said that Mr. Biden is not focusing on important topics for the 2024 election.

Mr Miller said that instead of helping the people hurt by Biden’s economic policies or the weak border, Biden wants to use the government against his main political opponent.

Mr Biden keeps talking about protecting democracy many times.

In 2020, he ran for office promising to make America normal again. Before the 2022 midterms, Mr. Biden said the election was very important for our country.

On Friday, Mr Biden chose Valley Forge, Pennsylvania as the location to talk about important themes related to the American Revolutionary War.

The music added to the mood as Mr. Biden walked to the stage. They played a song from Hamilton, a musical about the Founding Fathers, on the speakers.

After trying for a year to make Mr. Biden look better in the polls by talking about his economic plans, his campaign is now focusing on democracy and pointing out the big differences between him and Mr.

Mr Biden has used this strategy before and it has worked well.

Democrats did better than expected in the 2022 midterms by defeating Republican opponents who supported Trump and doubted the fairness of US elections.

Ashley Etienne, who used to work for Biden’s campaign, said that this issue is really important to Democratic supporters.

Ms Etienne said that democracy is really important to who we are as people. “But it works and helps you win. ” It’s a message that says we won. And it helped bring together a large group of voters.

Mr Biden’s friends in the Democratic party were happy that he chose to emphasize the importance of democratic values.

“I’m happy the president is speaking out today to support democracy, freedom, and to show that Trump is a threat to all of that,” said Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who is a member of the Democratic Party, to reporters.

New polls show that Americans’ opinions about the January 6 attack are very different depending on their political party. Republicans are now less likely to think it was a violent attack compared to three years ago. One out of four Americans think the FBI, not Mr. Trump’s supporters, caused the riot, according to a poll by the Washington Post and the University of Maryland.

Sunak was sceptical of Rwanda plan – Documents indicate

0

Rishi Sunak wasn’t sure about sending migrants to Rwanda when he was in charge, according to BBC documents.

They say Mr Sunak wanted to make No 10’s first plans smaller.

They also show that he wasn’t sure if the plan would actually stop people from crossing the Channel.

They recommend that he didn’t want to pay for housing for migrants in special centers, and preferred to use hotels or private homes because they are less expensive.

As the leader of the government, Mr Sunak has made the Rwanda plan a very important task because his party wanted him to.

The plan to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda for processing and possibly resettling them was first announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in April 2022. This is to stop people from crossing the English Channel in small boats.

Mr Sunak became prime minister in October 2022. Before that, he was in charge of the country’s money as the Chancellor of the Exchequer when the Rwanda policy was talked about.

Legal problems have caused the deal to be delayed many times. No asylum seekers have been sent from the UK yet.

The No 10 papers were made in March 2022. Johnson wanted Mr. Sunak to agree to give more money for the plan. This happened shortly before the agreement with Rwanda to handle migrants was made.

They say that Mr. Sunak was worried about how much it would cost to send asylum seekers to the African country, and he wanted to start with only a few people.

They say the chancellor wants to start with fewer items at first, 500 instead of 1,500 in the first year, and 3,000 instead of 5,000 in years two and three.

The final plan’s numbers were never confirmed, but in April 2022 the BBC saw where asylum seekers would stay. It was believed to have enough room for up to 500 people per year, which matches Mr. Sunak’s arguments

The papers show that No 10 and 11 Downing Street disagree on whether the proposed plan will work. The chancellor thinks it won’t.

Mr Sunak doesn’t want to pay for places where migrants can stay, like the Greek-style reception centers. Instead of housing them in hotels, which is costing £3. 5 million each day.

They say the chancellor doesn’t want to pay for places where people can stay without being locked up, like the reception centers in Greece, because hotels are cheaper.

The papers show that the Treasury wanted to send migrants to live in different parts of the country, which is called “dispersal”.

The papers also show that No 10 recommended telling Mr. Sunak to think about how much people like him if he didn’t want to agree to changes to the migration system, including the plan for Rwanda.

The UK Supreme Court said the proposal is not allowed, but the prime minister wants to make a new law so that planes can fly to Rwanda.

However, the news about his uncertainty over the plan might cause problems, especially since some MPs in his party want him to do more to achieve his target of stopping migrants from crossing the Channel, which could mean leaving the European Convention on Human Rights.

Someone who knows the prime minister well told the BBC: “The prime minister always supported the idea of the program as a way to discourage people from doing something. ”

“His job as chancellor was to make sure the government worked well and spent taxpayers’ money wisely. ”

A government official said, “Rishi, as the chancellor, provided funding for the Rwanda scheme and made it a central part of his 10-point plan just one month after becoming the Prime Minister. ”

“Now he is approving the Rwanda Bill because the Supreme Court said it’s okay to start flying again. He is the first leader to ever see a decrease in small boat crossings, which were down by 36% last year.

Labour MP Yvette Cooper said the Tories’ Rwanda scheme is fake and Rishi Sunak is now weak.

The prime minister knew the plan would cost a lot of money and wouldn’t work. He didn’t like the plan when he was in charge of the money. He is very weak and agreed to give Rwanda £400 million without visiting there, to try to make people trust him as a leader.

The Tories always go for flashy ideas instead of handling important issues, like Rwanda or hotels.

“It’s time for them to stop pretending and start following Labour’s plan to take action against the criminal smuggling gangs, make a new security deal with Europe to improve border protection, and create a new team to quickly remove people who shouldn’t be in the UK. ”

What is the plan for helping refugees from Rwanda.

Some asylum seekers arriving in the UK would be sent to Rwanda for processing as part of a five-year trial.

When they arrive, they might be given refugee status and permitted to remain. If not, they could try to live there for different reasons, or ask for protection in a different country.

The government said that anyone who comes to the UK illegally after 1 January 2022 could be sent back to their country, and there would be no limit on how many people could be sent back.

However, up to now, no person asking for safety has been sent away.

The first flight was supposed to happen in June 2022, but it got canceled because of legal problems.

The government says the policy would stop people from coming to the UK in dangerous or illegal ways, like on small boats across the English Channel.

In January 2023, Mr Sunak said that one of his main focuses was to stop boats from coming.

Last month, he promised to continue the work of bringing back the plan after immigration minister Robert Jenrick resigned. Jenrick quit because he thought the government’s new policy wouldn’t work.

ECL built Schools in Bally’s village but HH has never built anything in Luapula or Eastern: Bally is blackmailing Tongas like Hitler did to Germans

By Dr. Chris ZUMANI Zimba

1. Introduction: Free lessons from Adolf Hitler of Germany-1933 to 1945

When Adolf Hitler became ‘President’ in 1933 on NAZI Party ticket, he was the most popular and powerful politician across Germany. He was a skilled politician, vicious activist and gifted public speaker who could mount the podium and speak for hours and hours while everyone is prayerfully listening and joyfully clapping like they had seen the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

During his 13 years time in power between 1933 and 1945, Adolf Hitler had become politically so powerful, institutionally so elevated, ideologically so great and iconically so renowned everywhere. The media and political space was monopolized to himself alone to the extent that, most Germans feared at the mention of his name as if he was a human god.

Blindly, many Germans willingly supported Hitler’s authoritarian policies of destroying one of the best functional democracies of that time in Europe. He made Germans believe that ‘Hitler was creating a modern superpower and gallant war state that will dominate and conquer Europe and the world for them as a Aryan race- superior humans’. Hitler identified racism as his biggest and best political tool to manipulate, blackmail and own pure and original Germans to himself.

In most of Adolf Hitler’s public statements, he praised the German pure race and wondered why Jews, Christians and other foreign races were prospering more than the owners of the land. He could even publicly cry and mourn for the sufferings of ‘his people’. His worst and priority racial cleansing targets as as well as victims he blamed for the sufferings of Germany People were Jews. Consequently, Hitler used state institutions to systematically massacre and covertly assassinate millions of Jews in the name racial fairness and Justice.

Given that he mastered the art of political manipulation and blackmail, most Germans didn’t see that Hitler’s political agenda of restoring sovereign power, racial pride, economic dominance and military supremacy would result in plunging their motherland into a sure oppressive one party regime, brutal repression, ethnic regionalism, racial cleansing, genocide, and indeed world war chaos. Hitler made most people to ‘see sense’ in what he was doing.

But this Adolf Hitler did not just succeed at destroying himself by committing suicide eventually, he clashed his full top government team into total political darkness and changed Germany’s sovereign pride into a bloody dictatorship. This racist and unstoppable Hitler became wholly and solely responsible for a deadly global war that destroyed the entire Europe and most parts of the greater world from 1939 to 1945.

2. How Bally is blackmailing Tongas in 2024 with hate speeches and regional politics

When President HH visited Choma during his 2024 New Year trip, he rationally expressed divisive politics by calling of ethnic gods and nepotistic hate comments just like he does in many of his speeches. This time, Bally was reminding and inciting Tonga speaking people of Southern province that they were harassed, abused and segregated by previous governments especially under the PF.

Addressing the people at Masuku in Choma, President HH told the people of Southern Province that before he became president, they were being beaten when they visited Intercity in Lusaka for speaking Tonga. The Zambian leader complained on how dangerous weapons like panga’s were used against Tonga speaking people during the previous government. In his speech, HH was invoking a bloody and oppressive scenario that ‘existed’ against Tonga people before he became president.

In addition, the Zambian president openly said that the PF government had deliberately sidelined Southern province in terms of development. Our HH went on to remind them that Tonga speaking people were ethnically segregated and discriminated in the country by giving them a maximum of two bags of fertilizer for farming each under past regimes. HH was practically ‘crying and mourning’ like Hitler used to do for the suffering his people endured before he became their political saviour.

In response, on 3rd January, 2024, Citizens First (CF) President, Harry Kalaba became politically angry and lamented that he was dismayed at the continued use of tribal language by President Hakainde Hichilema in his public speeches. He noted that every opportunity the President has to address the nation, he chooses to be divisive rather than helping to heal the divide. Kalaba went on to call upon all well meaning citizens to oppose and condemn HH’s ethnic hatred, political tribalism and divisions.

3. Our critical analysis on HH’s divisive comments and tribal politics in Choma

-As evidenced by his gospel of ethnic politics, regionalism and hate speeches during his End Year Press Conference and recent speech in 2024 in Choma; this Bally is still so politically bitter, regionally segregative and dangerously divisive;

-By sustaining naked political lies, ethnic tensions, divisive rhetoric and regional politics, HH is trying to manipulate and hold the people of Southern province to ransom. Bally want to politically keep Tongas to himself for 2026 and beyond so that they vote and vote only for him as their only messiah: Bally is merely exploiting and blackmailing Tongas;

-Clearly and consequently, President Hakainde Hichilema is not repentant and ashamed to preach ethic hostility in 2024 and plant political discrimination on tribal and regions grounds in a country that is founded on “One Zambia, One Nation”;

-HH must emulate Lungu just like Kenneth Kaunda who kissed all places and citizens with the same amount of love as Zambians regardless of tribe, political affiliation or religion and planted their legacy of goodwill, fatherhood, developmental projects and equal delivery of public services;

-HH is lying that PF especially under ECL discriminated people of Southern province. Lungu went down to Dundumwezi and everywhere in Southern province where he was insulted and rejected and openly kissed them with human grace, love, compassion and generosity to preach “One Zambia, One Nation” as Republican President;

-HH is aware that in 2016, Dundumwezi constituency with a voter turn out of 79% gave Zambia’s President, Edgar Lungu only 252 votes against Bally himself who got 30, 810 votes. In 2015 Presidential by election, Dundumwezi voted the same and even worse with Lungu getting less than 85 votes against HH who got more than 14,500 votes;

-Despite this place making history to embarrass a sitting president with insulting votes, Lungu went back to them and kissed them with multiple developmental projects in the name of “One Zambia, One Nation”. In 2019, this Edgar Lungu initiated and commissioned the US$ 20.9 million, 247 Kilometers; Kalomo-Dundumwezi-Ngoma-Itezhi-Tezhi first ever climate resilient road in Zambia;

-Clearly, Lungu was not discriminatory as HH now insults him as he didn’t take such climate resilience road projects to his strongholds in Muchinga, Eastern, Luapula or Northern provinces: he gave it to the people who rejected him in Dundumwezi because he took them for Zambians only;

-At a victory thanks giving rally in Lusaka, Lungu committed that “We have a responsibility to show the people in the areas where we got few votes that we are One Zambia, One Nation. If I didn’t get those 252 votes in Dundumwezi, I wouldn’t have gotten 50% plus 1”. And ECL just walked that talk in Southern province and everywhere by raining developmental projects;

-In Dundumwezi and Kalomo district itself, Lungu left signatures of development such new clinics, schools, boreholes, district hospital, hydro power plants, farming support services with improved agricultural output, livestock treatment facilities, etc just like many other places across Zambia;

-In the actual village of HH and actual area where Bally grew up as a child, Lungu felt bad to see school hundreds of pupil learning in a cracked school built in colonial era in 1956. In 2017, Lungu promised the Tonga people of Bwengwa in Monze district that he will do everything possible including using his personal money to build them modern classrooms;

-In 2020, l was with the President when he launched new blocks of classrooms at Bweengwa Secondary School, a place where HH was born and grew up. Lungu, not HH gave Bwengwa new learning facilities built from his own money with the support of private own friends out of love and free generosity. Remember, Bwengwa always voted for HH and it is Bally’s own home;

-Whilst HH is merely pretending that he loves all Zambians including those in provinces where he lost to ECL like Luapula, Eastern and Muchinga in 2021, Bally has failed to show true love and generosity in these regions by using his personal money to build even a single school or clinic toilet: atleast, l don’t know of any to my knowledge;

-Despite being paraded as the ‘richest Zambian’, this Bweengwa born child called Bally did not at any point thought of rehabilitating his own home school, Bweengwa Secondary School, for his own relatives and tribespeople until the politically insulted and rejected Lungu showed up to plant love, grace and generosity in 2017;

-For a President with a heart of bitterness, divisive rhetoric and segregative tongue, there is nothing strange to learn that HH has never used even 0.00001% of his wealth to built a simple school block or guard house anywhere in Luapula, Muchinga or Eastern Province where he lost to Lungu;

-Despite Bally birthing hate speech and confirming ethnic homophobia by preaching unfounded stereotypes in Southern province, many Zambians know that Lungu’s Economic Advisor at State House was Hijani Hibene, a Tonga-Ila from HH’s home village and chief in Bweengwa of Namwala district;

-While HH is openly preaching and justifying political tribalism and regionalism among the Tongas in 2024 by lying that the PF government segregated them, honest people are fully aware that it was the 6th Republican President, Dr. Lungu who built and launched the US$259million Kazungula Bridge and One Stop Border Post Commissioned in May, 2021;

-This Edgar Lungu our HH wants to portray as a ‘wicked man’ against the people of Southern Province did initiate and constructed new houses for police officers in Chikakanta, Mazabuka, Choma and Kazungula districts while Bally has never emulated ECL’s legacy of true fatherliness in PF strongholds so far; and

-Generally, HH must remember that Lungu was a man of after God’s heart- a man for all the people and developmental projects speak for ECL in Monze, Mazabuka, Kazungula, Monze, Livingstone, Choma, Kalomo, etc where he was repeatedly rejected and politically called evil names. In fact, developmental projects speak for Lungu everywhere across Zambia.

4. Conclusion and public appeal

As we land the plane, it is important to note that, this HH has terribly failed to fulfill and deliver his 2021 campaign promises to Zambians in general and Southerners particular this far. Hence, it is not shocking that Bally has adopted Adolf Hitler type of discriminatory rhetoric and ethnic divisive propaganda to manipulate and blackmail the Tonga speaking people to himself for political purposes. This is evil, dangerous and unacceptable in any functional democracy.

Therefore, I am calling upon opposition politicians, civil society groups, scholars, the church, students, media, activists, traditional leaders, the youth, men and women movements across Zambia to condemn and oppose HH’s continued assault to our country mantra of “One Zambia, One Nation “. Everywhere, political tribalism and divisive regionalism does not build nations, like racism it only destroys and kills them.

In Proverbs 6:16 to 19, the Bible is very instructive and our President, HH must take time to read and meditate on it as he governs Zambia:

There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him:

haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,

a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,

a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Crisis management , Masebo is failing, Hichilema is absent- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Crisis management , Masebo is failing, Hichilema is absent

…this is a multi-sectoral fight requiring informed leadership and coordination…

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

It is clear that the Minister of Health, Silvia Masebo is clueless over one of the worst and ferocious health crisis that has affected this country.

She is seen cleaning wards and drainages, arguing with pharmacists and traders, assuming the position of spokesperson and making a grandstanding and social-media show of the crisis.

The crisis has since worsened claiming 172 lives.

Former Minister of Health, Dr. Chitalu Chilufya has sounded the warning that this is a multi-sectoral fight and response requiring informed leadership, coordination and advising on what needs to be done immediately;

1. Strengthen leadership and enhance a multi sectoral response in this public health war.

2. Trigger and strengthen epidemic preparedness and response committees at national and subnational levels.

3. Through the Zambia National Public Health Institute, trigger emergency response systems and coordinate with all stakeholders to sufficiently respond to the cholera outbreak.

4. Thoroughly define this epidemic, map the epicenters and potential hotspots, and identify factors fueling the epidemic.

5. Urgently step up health promotion activities to sensitize the public on personal and collective measures to avoid contracting cholera and to seek treatment early when infected. All media and communication platforms need to be engaged and triggered.

6. Escalate upstream interventions to address the determinants of the disease and upscale community level interventions to halt new infections. This should involve, inter alia, provision of adequate fresh water for consumption in epicenters, thorough cleaning of environments, including trading areas and other congregate settings; improving sanitation; hyper chlorination of water sources, aggressive sensitization on personal hygiene, washing hands, drinking boiled cooled water, and eating well cooked foods.

7. Engage partners and urgently procure cholera vaccines and conduct mass vaccination in all hotspots. This will confer some protection while you attend to primary determinants.

8. Discourage overcrowding and stop public gatherings for funerals for cholera victims.

9. Improve case management to deal with the case load and stop the deaths.

10. Improve logistics for surveillance, early detection, diagnosis and treatment.

Guidance for Patriot Front Party Members in Eastern Province

As we start the new year of 2024, the Patriot Front Party in Eastern Province extends New Year wishes to the people and its members, especially our former President of the Republic of Zambia Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

We note with sadness and disappointment that the Province faces numerous challenges stemming from current poor governance by the UPND in agricultural policies, causing hardship, hunger and uncertainty among our farmers.

The PF’s steadfast commitment to it’s proven agricultural policies, characterized by early farming input distribution and successful harvests during its decade in power, remains unwavering.

Regrettably, recent incidents involving Party officials publicly criticizing their own elected officials and the disturbing reports of Chipangali MP Andrew Lubusha who is also the out going Provincial Chairman, supporting and persuading councillors to defect to UPND by using Party structures have raised concerns. The Party wishes to categorically state that such acts of confusion and division from any senior member of the Party will be met with full force without fear.

It is in this vein that the Party in the Province wishes to warn any erring members regardless of their positions. The Party will not tolerate any acts of treachery or betrayal of trust.

The actions of the out going Provincial Chairman Andrew Lubusha are unacceptable and will not be tolerated at all. We have noted the schemes and manuevres by the outgoing Chairman trying to bring confusion between the Councillors and the Council Chairperson in Chipangali .We urge our Councillors to remain loyal to the Party and President Edgar Chagwa Lungu who adopted them.

Party members are therefore urged and guided to refrain from making public statements or radio appearances without explicit instructions from the national coordinating teams. The party will take decisive action against members engaging in unauthorized radio programs mainly to discredit senior or elected party members.

All District, constituency, Ward and Section Chairmen are directed accordingly not to allow anyone to abuse them for selfish political mileage especially from the miles Sampa rebel group.

Let me share that the East PF positions will soon be restructured to counter silent defections that is aimed at weakening the Party.

In pursuit of unity and a better future for our party, PF in Eastern Province is guided as above and ask our members to remain dedicated to safeguarding the interests of the party and its supporters.

In another development, the Party in Eastern Province is very disappointed with our PF Chadiza MP Mr Jonathan Daka who has accepted to be appointed as the Deputy Whip of opposition in Parliament by the rebel faction of Miles Sampa and his stooges. We urge the District and the Constituency to disregard his appointment by the unrecognizable channels of leadership other than that of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu and our able Secretary General Raphael Nakachinda. Honorable Anthony Kasandwe remains our recognized deputy whip of the opposition PF. We want to also urge our members in the Province not to deal with any MP or leader who wants to exert the Miles Sampa agenda. Miles Sampa is a rebel and remains an expelled member of the Party.

The Party in the East is confident in the leadership of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu and Secretary General Raphael Nakachinda to resolve this impasse. We are assured that the Party Secretariat is aware about the erring members of Parliament who have continued to align themselves to UPND and want to distabilize the PF without shame. PF is not for sale. It’s high time we take the bull by it’s horns. The appeasement policy of these rebel MPs will erode the confidence from our structures and the general membership.

I have today onward taken over the position of Provincial Chairmanship until that time the Secretariat will appoint an interim Committee. All members should be guided as such for now.

William Phiri
Eastern Province Interim Provincial Chairman.

Senegal: Sonko’s application to contest for Feb 25 presidential election rejected

Senegal’s top opposition leader on Friday suffered major setbacks in his quest to contest the presidency when a top court upheld the defamation conviction against him and the Constitutional Council rejected his application to be a presidential candidate on the basis that it was incomplete.

Ousmane Sonko ‘s application case at the council was “examined without his representative (in) a flagrant violation of the law” before it was rejected, his lawyer, Ciré Cledor Ly, told reporters. “From the outset, the government has shown its willingness to invalidate Ousmane Sonko’s candidacy.”

The council’s decision came hours after the Supreme Court rejected the jailed opposition leader’s appeal of his conviction for defamation after being sued by a government minister. The trial was seen as the latest twist in a prolonged legal battle involving several charges which the opposition leader has alleged is to stop his presidential bid in the February elections.

“The trial was the very last chance,” Sonko’s lawyer Khoureychi Ba said of the ruling delivered after a session that started on Thursday. “I realize that Mr. Sonko’s opponents have succeeded in eliminating him from the Feb. 25 presidential election,” Ba said.

Sonko, who finished third in the country’s 2019 presidential election, is widely seen as the main challenger to President Macky Sall’s ruling party. Sall himself ultimately decided not to seek a third term in office after Sonko’s supporters launched months of protests that at times turned deadly.

Although the Constitutional Council’s decision has nothing to do with Sonko’s conviction for defamation, the council has the final say on all the candidacies, including that of the opposition leader. Under Senegal’s electoral code, such a conviction makes one ineligible for a presidential race.

Sonko is currently in prison on a different charge, and will continue to face the six-month suspended prison sentence handed him when he was convicted in the defamation case last year.

El-Hadji Diouf, a lawyer representing Mame Mbaye Niang, the minister who filed the defamation suit against Sonko, celebrated Friday’s ruling as a “big, important win.”

“The minister’s lawyers won on all counts. The six-month suspended prison sentence was upheld. … We are celebrating our victory,” said Diouf.

Sonko’s presidential bid has faced a prolonged legal battle that started when he was accused of rape in 2021. In June, he was acquitted of the rape charges but was convicted of corrupting youth and sentenced to two years in prison, which ignited deadly protests across the country. Senegalese authorities also dissolved Sonko’s political party in late July and detained him.

After overcoming one of his last remaining legal hurdles in December when a ruling that effectively barred him from contesting the presidency was overturned, Sonko formally submitted his candidacy to beat a Dec. 26 deadline. Eligible candidates will be announced in the first two weeks of January and the campaign season kicks off the following month.

“We are the ones serving a life sentence” – Reeva Steenkamp’s mother distraught at Oscar Pistorius release

0

June Steenkamp, the mother of Reeva Steenkamp, has bemoaned the release of Oscar Pistorius after nine years of imprisonment, saying that her family will bear the scars caused by her murder long after the disgraced South African Paralympic gold medalist has been freed.

The double amputee was convicted of murdering Steenkamp after he shot her multiple times through a locked toilet door with a 9mm pistol on Valentine’s Day at their Pretoria home in 2013.

Speaking after the release of Pistorius, Steenkamp questioned whether the family had received justice and closure for her killing.

“Has there been justice for Reeva? Has Oscar served enough time? There can never be justice if your loved one is never coming back and no amount of time served will bring Reeva back.

“We, who remain behind, are the ones serving a life sentence,” she said.

Steenkamp said she and her late husband, Barry, had found it hard to come to terms with the way their daughter had been taken from them.

“Now, almost 11 years later, the pain is still raw and real. And my dear late husband Barry and I have never been able to come to terms with Reeva’s death, or the way she died.

“Through the years Barry and I were encouraged by the love and messages of support from both friends and strangers. I wish I could thank each one personally for carrying Barry and I through these difficult years,” she said.

Steenkamp also bemoaned the media scrutiny that had followed the death of their daughter.

“Whilst we remain grateful to the media, the intensity of the coverage of Oscar’s trial, imprisonment and parole has been a double-edged sword.

“The media interest meant the loss of our privacy and made it difficult to mourn in peace. Sadly, reports were often accompanied by verbal and emotional abuse by some members of the public.

“[This was] not only towards us, but also towards our deceased daughter. It is my sincere wish, and it was Barry’s too, that people will take a moment to consider the impact of their hurtful comments.

“We did not choose this. We would much rather have our loving daughter alive, and laughing, with us,” said Steenkamp.
