K11,500 is Not Enough” – Senior Chief Mwamba Laments Rising Cost of Living

“K11,500 is Not Enough” – Senior Chief Mwamba Laments Rising Cost of Living

Senior Chief Mwamba has questioned why government ministers and members of parliament receive far higher pay than traditional leaders, arguing that the K11,500 monthly allowance for senior chiefs is inadequate in today’s economy.

Speaking in an emotional appeal, the traditional leader said the cost of living has eroded the value of their stipend, making it difficult for chiefs to meet both household and community obligations.

“We only get K11,500. Why are we being taken for granted? A long time ago, chiefs were respected. Why should ministers and MPs be respected more than chiefs when we are the ones who elected them? Ministers are given houses and cars but we chiefs are not respected,” Chief Mwamba complained.

He noted that in the past, people in the community willingly worked for chiefs without expecting payment, but today things have changed.

“They say that we get paid a lot of money so why should they work for us. But these people don’t know that the money we get is too little. And we also have people who seek monetary help from us. We have funerals and other activities, all these we help using our money,” he explained.

The Chief’s cry comes at a time when the cost of living has skyrocketed across Zambia, meaning that even a senior chief’s salary can quickly disappear when faced with community obligations.

Ironically, Chief Mwamba is not just an ordinary Zambian struggling to get by. He owns land, farms, livestock cows, goats, and chickens and has an official palace. Yet, despite these assets, the Chief still finds it difficult to manage on K11,500. His plea highlights how inflation and rising costs are biting into every household, whether rural or urban, privileged or ordinary.

“We applied that our allowances be increased but it’s been quiet. At first they told us they will do so once they finished building chiefs’ palaces but it’s been quiet,” he said.

The Chief further expressed shock that members of parliament and ministers are held in higher regard than chiefs, despite the fact that traditional leaders interact more directly and frequently with their people.

NFF CONDEMNS REOPENING OF ISRAELI EMBASSY IN LUSAKA

NFF CONDEMNS REOPENING OF ISRAELI EMBASSY IN LUSAKA

…..describing it as a betrayal of Zambia’s liberation legacy and solidarity with 0ppressed peoples.

Lusaka, 21 August 2025 (SMART EAGLES)

The National Freedom Front  (NFF) has strongly condemned the UPND government’s decision to re-establish an Israeli Embassy in Lusaka, describing it as a betrayal of Zambia’s liberation legacy and solidarity with 0ppr£ssed peoples.

In a statement issued to Smart Eagles, NFF Secretary General Harry Simuntala said reopening the Israeli mission was “a sovereign in$ult and a direct as$ault on Zambia’s liberation identity,” accusing the government of abandoning the nation’s historic stance against ap@rtheid, col0nial domination, and injustice.

“This is not diplomacy; it is a profound betrayal of the very values that founded our nation: solidarity with the oppr£ssed, moral clarity in foreign policy, and unyielding resistance to apartheid and colonial domination,” Mr. Simuntala said.

He argued that Zambia must not “aid and abet war crïmes” by normalizing relations with Israel at a time when the regime is accused of atrocities in Gaza, including the b0mbing of hospitals, refugee camps, and the blockade of humanitarian aid.

“Zambia’s silence at the United Nations — our abstentions on ceasefire resolutions — was cowardly complicity. But welcoming an embassy while the bl00d of childr£n still runs in the streets of Gaza? That is no longer neutrality. It is an active endorsement of gen0cide,” Mr Simuntala charged.

The NFF Secretary General cited reports by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and repeated UN resolutions that have characterized Israel’s policies towards Palestinians as aparth£id and vi0lations of international law.

Mr Simuntala further accused Zambia of betraying its closest liberation ally, South Africa, which is currently pursuing a gen0cide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

“While South Africa stands up for justice, Zambia is breaking ranks to side with the accused. One nation leads with courage; the other sells its dignity to appease imperial interests in pursuit of imaginary economic favours. What does that make us?” he asked.

He added that the move dishonours Zambia’s liberation history, arguing that founding President Kenneth Kaunda and other freedom fighters would be “weeping in their graves” at the government’s decision.

The NFF announced that it will be staging a peaceful protest in solidarity with Palestine and said the police would be formally notified on Friday.

LAZ ACCUSES POLICE OF TRAMPLING ON RIGHTS

LAZ ACCUSES POLICE OF TRAMPLING ON RIGHTS

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has launched a stinging rebuke against both the Zambia Police Service and members of the public, following chilling revelations surrounding the death of 22-year-old Enock Simfukwe, who was tied up, beaten and later died after being accused of theft at Munyama Farms in Kabwe.

In a strongly worded statement issued yesterday, LAZ President Lungisani Zulu accused the police of “continued disregard” for constitutional rights, pointing to a disturbing pattern of suspects being held in custody far beyond the 24-hour legal threshold, denied bond, and in some cases hidden from their families until court intervention forced their appearance.

“The Police have a sacred duty to enforce the law with integrity, impartiality and devoid of any political biases,” Zulu charged, warning that arbitrary arrests and prolonged detentions are eroding public trust.

The association expressed deep concern over a viral video showing Simfukwe tied with ropes, visibly distressed, after being manhandled by his captors. Barely days later, police confirmed he had died in their custody. The shocking turn of events, LAZ said, is emblematic of a justice system failing at both ends with citizens resorting to mob justice and the police abusing detention powers.

“We have witnessed suspects in bondable cases rotting in police cells, denied their basic rights, and in some instances the police themselves lying about their custody until compelled by the courts through habeas corpus,” Zulu said.

The association warned that mob justice is dragging Zambia back into lawlessness, stressing that suspects must be surrendered to the police, not tortured or killed by vigilantes.

Simfukwe’s death, however, now sits squarely at the crossroads of public outrage and state accountability. The police’s admission that they were “investigating” his death has done little to calm anger, with critics demanding immediate answers on how a young man tied with ropes in public view could end up dead under state watch.

“This country was built on the rule of law,” LAZ reminded in its statement. “Our freedom fighters fought for a Zambia where justice is dispensed in courts, not in fields or dingy police cells.”

For now, the name of Enock Simfukwe has become a grim reminder of a nation at war with its own conscience: a Zambia where neither the police nor the public seem to know when to stop.

Kenneth Kaunda: The Malawian who became the first president in Zambia

Kenneth Kaunda: The Malawian who became the first president in Zambia

The Livingstonia Mission arrived in Malawi in 1875 and settled at Cape Maclear in Mangochi. Later the Mission moved to Bandawe in  Nkhata Bay.

At Bandawe in Nkhata Bay, the Livingstonia Mission recruited a lot of Tonga students who were later trained as teachers. Some of the Tonga students were Eadward Boti Manda, Uriah Chirwa, Philemon Chirwa and David Kaunda.

David Kaunda was given his name in honour of Dr David Livingstone.

Livingstonia Mission later moved from Bandawe to Khondowe. During that time the first African teachers were being sent to outposts to establish Mission stations.

The Livingstonia Mission opened Mission stations as far as Chididi in Nsanje, Chilanga in Kasungu, Lubwa in Chinsali (Zambia), Chasefu in Lundazi (Zambia)  etc.

William Koyi, Mapas Ntitili, Isaac Wauchope and Shadrach Ngunana from Lovedale in South Africa were Xhosa teachers from South African who were also heavily involved in the Mission work in Malawi.

Edward Boti Manda was sent to Chilanga in Kasungu and was one of the early teachers of Hastings Banda in 1904.

David Kaunda was sent Lubwa in Zambia as a teacher and an assistant missionary in 1904.

The Livingstonia paper Vyaro na Vyaro wrote that David Kaunda returned to Malawi and married  his Tumbuka wife from Henga in Rumphi.

Although David Kaunda and his wife were living among the Bemba in Zambia they decided to name their newly born son Buchizya. Buchizya was born in 1924.

Buchizya’s was later named Kenneth. Kenneth Kaunda excelled in school being a son of a missionary teacher in Zambia.

When the British established the protectorate over Nyasaland in 1891 they were reluctant to take Zambia to be part of the protectorate.

The British only wanted territories of Nyasaland as the Scottish Missionaries were based in Malawi at Livingstonia and Blantyre.

The missionaries wanted parts of Zambia to be part of the protectorate as they had Mission stations in Zambia.

Cecil John Rhodes came in and  assisted. Rhodes sent money to the Nyasaland government in Zomba to invade the Eastern part of Zambia and bring it under the government of Malawi.

Sir Harry Johnstone and Alfred Sharpe with Army made of the Yao, Tonga, Lomwe and Sikh Indians invaded Zambia in 1890s and defeated chiefs Mpezeni, Chitimukulu, Mwamba etc and brought the Eastern Zambia under the government in Malawi..

From 1891 to 1896 half of Zambia was being ruled by the government in Malawi in Zomba.

From 1897 Rhodes appointed his own governor Forbes,  who was administrating Eastern Zambia from Blantyre in Malawi

From 1899, Eastern Zambia had its own capital within Zambia at Fort Johnstone.

The influence of Nyasaland over North Eastern Rhodesia ended on 31st March 1911.

Growing up in Zambia Kenneth Kaunda and his joined the political struggle and was made  the president of main political grouping in Zambia.

Some within the struggle were bickering that he should not lead the struggle was he was from Malawi. Some of his fellow Tonga activists like Aleke Banda were deported from Southern Rhodesia in 1959.

Zambia became independent in 1964 with Kenneth Kaunda as its first president. It was not till 1972 that Kenneth Kaunda renounced his Malawian citizenship.

Kenneth Kaunda in 1972 wrote a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs in Malawi to renounce his Malawian citizenship.

At that time, he had already been a president in  Zambia for 8 years.

It was not until 1991 that Chiluba raised the issue that Kenneth Kaunda was not a pure Zambian. That he was a Malawian.

They took the case to the court to bar Kenneth Kaunda to contest in Multi party elections.

The court found out that although Kenneth Kaunda renounced his Malawian citizenship in 1972, he did not apply for Zambian citizenship making him stateless

A deportation order was issued. Other victims were John Chinula and William Banda who were deported to Malawi.

Dr Banda had a soft spot for Kenneth Kaunda because Dr Banda knew Kaunda’s father while he was a young student at Chilanga in Kasungu. David Kaunda and Edward Manda, Kamuzu’s teacher were contemporaries.

Kenneth Kaunda visited Nkhata Bay in Malawi most of the times he came to Malawi during Dr Banda’s reign.

In the picture, Dr Banda and Kenneth Kaunda.

Selective Application of the Law? Kaoma Challenges Justice System

Selective Application of the Law? Kaoma Challenges Justice System

Political commentator Chomba Kaoma  has questioned what he describes as the selective application of the law in Zambia, citing several past cases to illustrate what he believes is unequal treatment before the justice system.

Kaoma’s remarks follow public debate over the case involving Maria and her alleged boyfriend, which has attracted strong reactions, including vocal support from media personality Simon Mwewa Chitambala.

“Let us be logical,” Kaoma said. “I have a few questions for my elder brother Simon Mwewa Chitambala after reading his bias support for Maria.”

Kaoma compared Maria’s situation with previous high-profile cases:

Mumbi Phiri: “Did Madam Mumbi Phiri participate in the murdering of the late UPND member in Sesheke, or did she just say that she witnessed the whole scenario? What charge was she given?” he asked.

Davies Chama: “Hon. Davies Chama’s driver discharged a firearm in self-defense when they were attacked by UPND cadres during a by-election in Western Province. Today the man is in jail for attempted murder. Was he not the one who fired the gun?” Kaoma pressed.

Chitotela & Chilangwa: Kaoma further pointed to the imprisonment of Ronald Chitotela and Nickson Chilangwa. “They are serving jail terms on crimes committed by their supporters. Did either of them physically participate in the torching of the UPND vehicle or in beating up UPND cadres?”

According to Kaoma, these examples reveal inconsistencies in the way justice is delivered.

“We don’t hate Maria or her said boyfriend,” he said. “All we want is justice to prevail the same way we have seen others go to jail for basically being part of a crime. The pendulum must swing both ways.”

No one has outshone Levy Mwanawasa yet- Hicks Sikazwe

No one has outshone Levy Mwanawasa yet

Hicks Sikazwe

LAST week as Zambia eulogised in memory of the country’s third president Levy Mwanawasa, images of how I knew him vividly came to the fore.

Many knew him as a good Ndola based lawyer. He tackled some of the most complex of cases from foreigners involved in what President Kenneth Kaunda called economic sabotage to the treason accused.

He was initially a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Most members of my family belong to the same religious group. So whenever I was dragged to go and attend some of the circuit gatherings I would spot him there.

In the early 1980s when I joined  the Times of Zambia, though I was not a court reporter whenever there was what bosses took as a big hearing, I was asked to help out.

Covering Mwanawasa making legal arguments was a marvel of an experience. Later when I moved to Kitwe around 1987 Dr Kaunda cracked down on business people, both local and foreign, who were accused of fraudulent deals involving mines.

Mostly those arrested in the clampdown found themselves as clients of  Mwanawasa. Second national president Frederick Chiluba, while he was head of the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), Kaunda detained him. He was rescued by Mwanawasa.

Even when Kaunda appointed him Solicitor General  his law firm continued to defend the most sensitive and difficult cases. Kaunda had no option but to relieve him of his duties and he went back to serve the people.

When the surge for multiparty politics struck he was elected in absentia as legal chairman if the new Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) at the first ever national symposium in Lusaka called to spearhead the lobby for the return to plural politics in Zambia.

Mwanawasa popularised court injunctions which were>>CONTINUE>>  https://mastmediazm.com/2025/08/no-one-has-outshone-levy-mwanawasa-yet/

NO FRA DEPOT WILL CLOSE BEFORE ALL THE FAMERS SALE THEIR MAIZE IN LUSAKA PROVINCE-MULYATA

NO FRA DEPOT WILL CLOSE BEFORE ALL THE FAMERS SALE THEIR MAIZE IN LUSAKA PROVINCE-MULYATA

Today, Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata toured Food Reserve Agency (FRA) maize depots in Chongwe, Rufunsa and Luangwa districts to appreciate the progress and challenges in the ongoing crop marketing season.

Here are the highlights:

✅Hon. Mulyata assured farmers in the province that no Food Reserve Agency (FRA) depot will be closed before all the farmers sale their maize.

✅The country has this year recorded an unprecedented maize bumper harvest of about 3.6 million Metric Tons of maize, prompting President Hakainde Hichilema to direct the FRA to buy more than the usual 500,000 Metric Tons for national strategic reserves to one million Metric Tons to allow more farmers sale their grain.

✅And Hon. Mulyata commended the farmers for their efforts to increase maize production adding that this has also been made possible by the New Dawn government’s good Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) administration and President Hichilema’s emphasis on increasing maize and other crop production as well as the favorable weather.

✅The Minister attributed the overwhelming response by farmers to supply maize to the FRA due to the FISP bonding for all beneficiaries to supply at least 10 bags of grade a white maize to the FRA.

✅She urged the FRA to ensure that any challenges reported in the field are brought to the attention of authorities and sorted out promptly to avoid frustrating the hard-working farmers.

✅Meanwhile, FRA Provincial Marketing Coordinator Lundu Sichale revealed that the province has so far bought over 55,000 Metric Tons of white maize from farmers amounting to about K400 million as of 20th August 2025, with over 65,000 Metric Tons still available on the market.

✅Satellite depots in Rufunsa and Chongwe have been overwhelmed by congestion as farmers have been trooping to sale their maize at the cost of k340 per 50 kilograms bag of maize.

STANBIC SALUTES GOVERNMENT FOR $1.25 BILLION KANSANSHI EXPANSION, DESCRIBES INVESTMENT AS MAJOR VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN ZAMBIA’S MINING SECTOR

STANBIC SALUTES GOVERNMENT FOR $1.25 BILLION KANSANSHI EXPANSION, DESCRIBES INVESTMENT AS MAJOR VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN ZAMBIA’S MINING SECTOR

Stakeholders in the mining sector have welcomed the US$1.25 billion Kansanshi Mine S3 Expansion Project, describing it as a landmark development set to transform Zambia’s copper production landscape.

The project, commissioned by President Hakainde Hichilema in Solwezi, North-Western Province on Tuesday, is expected to significantly boost output while opening new economic opportunities for local communities.

Stanbic Bank Zambia Chief Executive Officer, Mwindwa Siakalima, said the investment was a strong vote of confidence in the country’s mining sector.

“This project represents a bold statement that Zambia remains a premier investment destination. As a Pan-African bank, we are proud to support this development, which will not only spur growth in Solwezi and the North-Western Province but also create jobs and expand business opportunities for our people,” Mr. Siakalima said.

He added that the scale of First Quantum Minerals’ (FQM) investment signaled a new chapter for Zambia’s mining industry, urging the company to prioritize local participation in order to build a resilient domestic economy.

Copperbelt Mining Policy Monitoring Team (CMPMT) executive director, George Jere, said the commissioning of the S3 Expansion was crucial in strengthening local participation across the mining supply chain.

“FQM must redefine its supplier development policy to ensure that localization delivers tangible benefits, not just for expatriate companies but for Zambian enterprises as well,” Mr. Jere said.

He added that such investments gave Government an opportunity to push for clear pathways that promote local capacity building, particularly in manufacturing and value addition.

“FQM should continue to demonstrate its role as an anchor investor, making robust commitments that can serve as a springboard for developing a strong local manufacturing base,” he said.

The Kansanshi Mine S3 Expansion Project is anticipated to play a central role in revitalizing Zambia’s mining sector, while positioning the country to increase copper production in line with national economic goals.

GOVERNMENT MOVES TO INSTALL SOLAR AT HEROES AND LEVY STADIUMS, SET TO GENERATE 20MW

GOVERNMENT MOVES TO INSTALL SOLAR AT HEROES AND LEVY STADIUMS, SET TO GENERATE 20MW

The National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka and Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola are set to produce a combined 20 megawatts of solar energy, following the delivery of the first batch of solar batteries to Lusaka.

The development comes after the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jiangsu Fanye Power Energy Equipment Ltd to install solar systems at the two facilities.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu praised the initiative, saying the installations will not only power the stadia but also contribute surplus electricity to the national grid, benefitting surrounding communities in Lusaka and Ndola.

Mr Nkandu also said Government has procured equipment to maintain the hybrid turf that will soon be installed at the National Heroes Stadium.

He described the solarisation of the Heroes Stadium as a landmark achievement that will secure the long-term sustainability of the facility.

Mr. Nkandu noted that his ministry was proud to be among the first government institutions to actively support Zambia’s renewable energy agenda.

The minister added that the partnership with Jiangsu Fanye Power Energy Equipment Ltd aligns with President Hakainde Hichilema’s call for citizens and institutions to embrace renewable, affordable, and environmentally friendly sources of energy.

Echoing this sentiment, Energy Minister Makozo Chikote reaffirmed the New Dawn government’s commitment to strengthening inter-ministerial collaboration in order to meet the energy and development needs of the Zambian people.

Mr. Chikote welcomed the project, stressing the importance of diversifying Zambia’s energy sources beyond hydropower to address the country’s ongoing electricity challenges.

The project represents a pioneering step in integrating renewable energy into sports infrastructure, while promoting youth empowerment and advancing the country’s sustainable development goals.

The $100,000 Grass Cutter: Zambia’s Most Expensive Lawn Mower Lands at Heroes Stadium

The $100,000 Grass Cutter: Zambia’s Most Expensive Lawn Mower Lands at Heroes Stadium

Forget Bentleys, forget Lamborghinis Zambia has just unveiled its latest luxury asset: a grass cutter valued at a jaw-dropping $100,000 (K2.3 million). Yes, you read that right K2.3 million to trim grass.

Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, proudly inspected the newly acquired lawn mower at National Heroes Stadium, treating it almost like the arrival of a new aircraft. One could almost hear the crowd whisper: “Is this a grass cutter or a space shuttle?”

The minister explained that the equipment will help maintain the hybrid turf soon to be installed at the stadium. For that price, one can only assume the machine doesn’t just cut grass perhaps it also sings the national anthem, cooks nshima, and negotiates debt restructuring.

And if that wasn’t enough, Nkandu was also present for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Jiangsu Fanye Power Energy Equipment Ltd, who will solarise the stadium. Solar power plus a golden lawn mower? The future of Zambian sport has never looked shinier.

But the question on everyone’s lips remains: does this grass cutter come with air conditioning, bulletproof glass, or maybe a built-in Wi-Fi router? For $100,000, one would expect at least a cup holder.

After all, in a country where a 25kg bag of mealie meal costs K450, spending K2.3 million on a lawn mower makes perfect sense because clearly, the grass at Heroes Stadium must be more important than the stomachs in people’s homes.

CAMEROON COURT TO RULE ON PETITION CHALLENGING 92-YEAR-OLD BIYA’S CANDIDACY OVER AGE AND HEALTH CONCERNS

By: DW Africa
Cameroon’s Constitutional Council will rule tomorrow on a petition challenging President Paul Biya’s bid for an eighth term in office.

The case, filed by opposition lawyer Akere Tabeng Muna, cites Biya’s age of 92, his frequent medical absences, and his reliance on aides as grounds for disqualification under the electoral code. Muna maintains the petition is a legal necessity, not a political attack.

The challenge comes amid doubts over the vote’s credibility, following the Council’s decision to bar leading opposition candidate Maurice Kamto — a move that triggered protests in the capital, Yaounde.

Biya, who has been in power since 1982, has already confirmed his candidacy on social media.

Shock as South African man brutally st@bs his girlfriend to d3ath for allegedly cheating on him; posts video of her lifeless body on Facebook

A South African man identified as Mfana Ngwenya st@bbed his girlfriend, Kgaogelo Nnonu, to d3ath and posted a video of her lifeless body on Facebook.

The incident occurred outside a tavern in Maubane, Hammanskraal in Gauteng province in the early hours of Thursday morning, August 21, 2025.

According to initial reports, the suspect suspected Kgaogelo of cheating on him.

In what appears to be a moment of rage, he slashed her throat multiple times with a blade and posted a video showing her covered in blood, cursing her as she took her last breath.

The graphic video was later taken down but not before South Africans downloaded it.

What has further outraged the public is that the boyfriend later took to social media, where he posted a detailed explanation of why he k!lled her, claiming she cheated on him after everything he did for her.

He made another post on Facebook, saying she ‘ruined’ them but he will love her forever.

“They may judge me but you and I know the truth, you ruined us, as I posted everything on the app it will prove that. RIP to is, I promised you till death do us apart after I fought for your life. Will forever love you Mmamogashwa,” he wrote.

The disturbing posts have since circulated widely online, drawing anger and calls for swift justice.

Residents of the community expressed their heartbreak, describing Kgaogelo as a vibrant young woman whose life was cut short in a senseless act of gender-based violence.

The South African Police Service has not yet issued an official statement on the matter at the time of filing this report.

It remains unclear whether the suspect has been apprehended.

Julia Fox clarifies s3xuality after coming out as lesbian

Julia Fox, the 35-year-old actress and model, has clarified her s3xual orientation, revealing that she identifies as pans3xual, a year after publicly coming out as a lesbian.

In a recent interview with Allure, Fox explained that her attraction is guided by “vibes” rather than gender, meaning she can connect with anyone, including men.

Despite this, Fox emphasized that her physical attraction leans more toward women, saying men “just don’t do it for her anymore” and that she is no longer entertaining male romantic pursuits. “I could be attracted to anyone and anything,” she said.

Fox also shared that she has never had a full-on relationship with a woman, although she has experienced crushes and some romantic encounters. At present, she says her focus is not on dating but on being the best mother she can to her son, Valentino.

Reflecting on her journey, Fox hinted at the challenges of navigating her s3xuality and suggested that her current experiences are far preferable to her past relationship with Kanye West.

Serial paedophile will be physically and chemically castrated after he was caught s£xually assaulting a seven-year-old girl

A serial paedophile will be physically and chemically castrated after he was caught s£xually assaulting a seven-year-old girl.

Thomas Allen McCartney, 37, has been labelled one of the worst child predators in the US state of Louisiana.

He agreed to the castration on Tuesday, August 19, as part of a plea deal to reduce his prison sentence.

McCartney will still be locked up for 40 years for his crimes, according to local station Fox 12.

Louisiana is the first and only state in the US to allow surgical castration as punishment for s£x crimes, although it has allowed chemical castration since 2008.

The new law only came into effect in August, making McCartney’s case likely one of the first.

The child predator was arrested in 2023 after a mother walked in on him s£xually abusing her seven-year-old daughter.

He used a gun to try to escape before being apprehended in Houston, Texas.

He pleaded guilty on Tuesday, August 19, to attempted first-degree r@pe of a child under the age of 13.

Vernon Parish District Attorney Terry Lambright said: “This is a horrific crime that never should have happened. Thomas McCartney is a predator that needs to be locked away from others in our community.”

McCartney was already a Tier 3 s£x offender in Louisiana after he was previously convicted of attempted aggravated r@pe in 2011.

The predator was also detained on two counts of aggravated r@pe of a 12-year-old child in 2010.

Back in 2006, he was also arrested on one count of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

Africa could become a renewable superpower – United Nations Secretary-General

United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has called for greater investment in green energy across the Africa, saying the continent has everything it takes to become a “renewable superpower.”

Speaking at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), Guterres stressed the need to mobilize finance and technology to ensure Africa’s natural wealth benefits its people and to build a thriving renewable energy and manufacturing base.

“Green power in Africa lowers energy costs, diversifies supply chains, and accelerates decarbonization for everyone,” he said.

Guterres warned that mounting debt should not hinder development and urged increased concessional finance and greater lending capacity from multilateral development banks.

He added, “Africa has everything it takes to become a renewable superpower, from solar and wind to the critical minerals that power new technology.”

The conference brought together African leaders and Japanese officials, with discussions on clean energy, economic partnerships, and long-term investment opportunities.

Police investigating de@th of streamer who d!ed live online during’10 days of torture’ challenge

French police are investigating the death of a popular streamer, who died during a nearly 12-day stream after apparently suffering abusive and humiliating treatment while viewers watched live.

Raphaël Graven, 46, known online as Jean Pormanove or JP, is one of the biggest streamers in France on the platform Kick and died on Monday.

The Nice prosecutor’s office confirmed to CNN that an investigation has been opened into his death and an autopsy ordered.

The 46-year-old military veteran had built a following numbering more than a million across different platforms streaming himself playing video games. He had often appeared in extreme challenges where other streamers assaulted or humiliated him.

Since 2023, he had appeared with several other streamers, principally Owen Cenazandotti, known as Naruto online, and Safine Hamadi, both of whom took part in his final livestream.

Cenazandotti announced his death Monday on Instagram. In the video livestream that appeared to show his death, after he stopped moving, viewers donated money to send messages alerting the sleeping streamers to Pormanove’s condition.

In dozens of videos from past livestreams reviewed by CNN, Pormanove appears to be the target of jokes, bullying, physical attacks, and degrading stunts.

Videos from their joint livestreams show Pormanove’s fellow streamers competing to see how long they could throttle him, others show him being shot with paintballs or doused with water.

During Pormanove’s final livestream, which appeared to run to nearly 300 hours, participants were woken up by the revving of a motorbike in their shared bedroom, or a leafblower. At one point, Pormanove appears to be woken up when a bucket of water is thrown over him.

In an interview with CNN affiliate BFMTV, Yassin Sadouni, a lawyer for Cenazandotti, said Pormanove suffered from cardiovascular problems.

In one video, Pormanove talked of having to take medication. In another, Cenazandotti purports to read out messages Pormanove sent to his mother in which he complains of being “held prisoner” by his co-streamers.

The game “is going too far,” Cenazandotti said his message read, during Pormanove’s last livestream.

“I feel like I’m being held prisoner by their sh***y concept,” Cenazandotti said Pormanove wrote.

Mother shoots her terminally ill husband, their two children and then herself

A mother shot her terminally ill husband, their two children and then herself de@d in a horror murd£r-su!cide, leaving her youngest boy, 3, an orphan

.

Emily Long, 34, had uploaded a series of distressing TikToks before the de@ths, detailing her struggles to come to terms with her husband’s terminal brain cancer battle.

She confessed in her last video, shared just two days before k!llings, that she and the children were having a hard time with her husband’s diagnosis, but that she was committed to overcoming her mental health issues.

Her husband Ryan Long, 48, and two of their children, eight-year-old Parker and six-year-old Ryan, were found de@d at their home in New Hampshire, the US, on Monday night, August 18. Their youngest child, aged 3, was unharmed.

According to newly released autopsy findings, Emily di£d by su!cide from a single gunshot wound to the head. Her two children were k!lled, with each suffering a single gunshot wound to the head, which the medical examiner ruled as homicides.

Emily’s husband was shot multiple times, with his de@th also ruled a homicide.

“Based upon the information available at this time, it appears that in the early morning hours of Monday, August 18, 2025, Ms. Long took a handgun from the home and caused the de@ths of Ryan Long and her two children, Parker and Ryan, and then took her own life immediately thereafter,” the medical examiner told the Daily Mail.

“While investigators are becoming aware of various concerns/issues ongoing in the household at the time of the event in question, people should avoid speculating that this event was caused by a single reason or stressor.”

Police received a call on Monday alerting them to multiple de@ths inside the home. On arrival at roughly 8.21pm, they found the three-year-old boy inside the home, unharmed. He is now in the custody of family, with an investigation into the incident ongoing.

On TikTok, Emily spoke about the family’s journey after her husband was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

“All I want to do is hide under a blanket with my kids, but that isn’t healthy for them and it’s not healthy for me,” she said.

“Today I decided I need to make a conscious effort to shift my mindset. I’m getting out of this depression whether I want to or not. I am determined to create normalcy.”

Actor Nick Jonas reveals he hates sitting on the bed with wife Priyanka Chopra

American singer-songwriter and actor, Nick Jonas has a strict rule when it comes to bedroom habits — no lounging allowed.

“I think beds are for sleeping only,” the 32-year-old singer shared on the Are You Okay? social media series, calling it his “beige flag.”

“I don’t sit on the bed, I don’t eat on the bed, I don’t read a book in bed or watch TV. I can’t do it. I just don’t like it to get warm. I run hot. It’s a whole thing,” Jonas said.

Although the couple has a TV in their bedroom, Jonas admitted that when his wife, Priyanka Chopra, wants to watch a show, he pulls up a chair next to the bed instead.

Host Bri Morales called the habit “crazy,” and fans agreed, with one writing, “Pulling up a chair while Priyanka is in bed watching TV is wild to me!” Others, however, found the quirk endearing, calling it a “green flag.”

Despite their differing views on bedroom comfort, Jonas and Chopra are going strong after five years of marriage. The couple began dating in 2018, got engaged just months later, and tied the knot that December in a lavish ceremony in India.

In January 2022, they welcomed their daughter, Malti, via surrogate and have since shared family milestones on social media.

Uganda has entered an agreement with the United States to take in migrants

Uganda has entered an agreement with the United States to take in nationals from third countries who may not get asylum in the U.S. but are reluctant to return to their countries of origin, the foreign affairs ministry said on Thursday, August 21.

President Donald Trump aims to deport millions of immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally, and his administration has sought to increase removals to third countries, including by sending convicted criminals to South Sudan and Eswatini.

“This is a temporary arrangement with conditions including that individuals with criminal records and unaccompanied minors will not be accepted,” Vincent Bagiire Waiswa, the ministry’s permanent secretary, said in a statement.

Waiswa added that Uganda would prefer to receive people from African nationalities under the agreement.

“The two parties are working out the detailed modalities on how the agreement shall be implemented,” he said.

On Wednesday, another Ugandan foreign affairs official had denied a U.S. media report that the East African country had agreed to take in people deported from the United States, saying it lacked the facilities to accommodate them.

Uganda, a U.S. ally in East Africa, also hosts nearly two million refugees and asylum-seekers, who mostly hail from countries in the region such as Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Sudan.

In July, five immigrants from Vietnam, Jamaica, Laos, Yemen and Cuba, who Washington said had been convicted of serious crimes, were flown to Eswatini, where they are now in a high-security prison. The deportations are being challenged by a group of Swazi and southern African NGOs, with a high court hearing scheduled for Friday.

Also in July, eight men from various countries were deported by the US to South Sudan, via Djibouti, where they were held for weeks in a shipping container. Meanwhile, more than 250 Venezuelans were repatriated to Venezuela after being sent to a notorious El Salvador prison in March without due process.

Neymar confronted by angry Santos fans and ‘threatened with violence’ after worst defeat of his career

Fans of the Brazilian football club, Santos, are still angry at their team’s humiliating 6-0 defeat by Vasco da Gama on Sunday, August 17.

After the match, Neymar was reduced to tears as the defeat marked the worst defeat of his career.

In an extraordinary scene, the club’s ultras confronted Neymar and his teammates at the training ground.

Neymar was right at the front, and the players behind him listened solemnly to their irate supporters outside the training ground.

The assembled squad were told: ‘What’s happening on the pitch is not enough.’

ESPN Brazil also reports that the players were threatened with violence at the CT Rei Pele facility, adding that Neymar told the ultras they are ‘trying to change things’.

The loss marked the worst defeat of Neymar’s career, a devastating blow as Santos continued their fight to avoid relegation.

The No. 10 left the field in tears and had to be consoled by head coach Fernando Diniz.

After the game, Neymar did not hide his frustration. “I’m embarrassed. I’m totally disappointed with our performance,” he told reporters. “The fans have every right to protest, obviously without violence… But if they want to curse and insult us, they are in their right.”

“It’s an extreme shame. I had never experienced something like this in my life. Unfortunately, it happened,” he continued. Asked about his tears, Neymar admitted: “The tears were from anger, from everything. Unfortunately, I can’t help at all. Honestly, it was total crap — that’s the reality.”

Meta has frozen hiring in its artificial intelligence division following months of aggressive recruitment

0

Meta Platforms has frozen hiring in its artificial intelligence division following months of aggressive recruitment, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The hiring freeze, which took effect last week, coincides with a broader restructuring of the company and restricts current employees from moving between teams within the AI division. The duration of the freeze has not been disclosed.

“There might be exceptions to the block on external hires, but they would need permission from Meta’s chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang,” the sources said. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the freeze, describing it as “basic organizational planning: creating a solid structure for our new superintelligence efforts after bringing people on board and undertaking yearly budgeting and planning exercises.”

Meta has been a leading player in the AI talent race, offering some researchers pay packages worth nine figures and acquiring startups to secure key personnel. Analysts have raised concerns over the high cost of such hiring, warning that Meta’s stock-based compensation could affect shareholder returns.

The restructuring divides Meta’s AI operations into four teams: TBD Lab, focused on superintelligence; an AI products team; an infrastructure team; and a long-term exploratory team called Fundamental AI Research. The reorganization follows criticism of the company’s previous AGI Foundations team, responsible for Meta’s Llama large language models, which underperformed expectations after its latest release.

After the Llama release in April, CEO Mark Zuckerberg became personally involved in recruiting, reaching out to researchers at OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and other labs. Offers sometimes reached $100 million in total compensation, with one overture to Thinking Machines Lab co-founder Andrew Tulloch valued at $1.5 billion, though he declined.

To strengthen its AI efforts, Meta also brought on Scale AI co-founder Alexandr Wang, former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, and Safe Superintelligence co-founder Daniel Gross, with the company acquiring stakes in their ventures as part of the recruitment. By mid-August, Meta had hired over 50 AI researchers and engineers from companies including OpenAI, Google, Apple, xAI, and Anthropic.

Investor concern over the cost of tech giants’ AI expansions has contributed to a recent selloff in technology stocks. In an August 18 research note, Morgan Stanley analysts warned that rising stock-based compensation at Meta and Google could either drive AI breakthroughs or dilute shareholder value without clear innovation gains.

Skydiver commits suicide by jumping from plane just hours after she broke up with boyfriend

0

An inquest has ruled that a skydiver who plunged 15,500ft to her death in County Durham, United Kingdom, took her own life just hours after ending a relationship with her boyfriend.

Jade Damarell, 32, died instantly after hitting the ground at Wrefords’ Farm in Peterlee without deploying her parachute. Coroner Dr Leslie Hamilton confirmed the death as suicide.

Her club, Sky-High Skydiving, said the incident appeared to be “a deliberate act,” and there was no evidence of negligence by the centre.

The inquest heard that Jade had ended her relationship with her boyfriend of eight months, Ben Goodfellow, on the night before her death. Notes left for her family at around 2.30am were later discovered.

On the morning of April 27, she was seen by Bryn Chaffe, co-owner of Sky-High Skydiving, eating breakfast before her fatal jump. Chaffe said she appeared quiet, but this was not unusual for her.

Jade, who had more than 500 jumps to her name, made no attempt to activate her parachute or backup system. She had also disabled her automatic activation device, which would normally deploy a chute at a set altitude.

A report by British Skydiving confirmed that all her equipment was fully functional. The day before, she had completed six jumps without issue.

Her cause of death was recorded as blunt trauma from multiple severe injuries, including a fractured skull. Durham Constabulary said at the time that her death was not being treated as suspicious.

Following the inquest, Jade’s family paid tribute, thanking the skydiving community for their support.

They said: “Jade loved the sport with a passion, and it brought her so much joy. Sky-High handled the tragedy and investigation into Jade’s death professionally and with compassion that allowed us to all share in our grief. So much so, Sky-High Skydiving helped us to celebrate Jade’s life with a very fitting tribute and final farewell, ending with Jade’s mum, Liz, honouring Jade’s memory with a final tandem jump.

“Our beloved daughter Jade was a brilliant, beautiful, brave and truly extraordinary person. A bright, adventurous, free spirit, she lived with immense energy, passion and love and touched countless lives with her warmth and kindness.

“By speaking openly and without shame, we hope to contribute to a culture where mental ill-health is met with kindness and support, and where people in deep distress, and those around them, feel seen, believed, and able to reach for support without fear of judgment.

“We miss Jade beyond words, but Jade’s love, brilliance, courage and light will live on in our family and among all those who knew and loved her. Some stars are so bright, they burn through their time too quickly, but their light never truly fades.”

The real reason why the  Police won’t arrest Maria Zaloumis: Zed Farmer is Lozi from Western Province while the victim is from Northern Province- Sishuwa Sishuwa

The real reason why the Zambia Police won’t arrest Maria Zaloumis

By Sishuwa Sishuwa

The failure by police to arrest Maria Zaloumis in connection with the murder of 22-year-old Enoch Simfukwe has little to do with the status of her mother, Hichilema’s former personal lawyer and Electoral Commission of Zambia chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis. It has much to do with ethnic-regional considerations. Zaloumis is Lozi from Western Province while the victim is from Northern Province.

Under Hichilema’s rule, high-profile arrests and prosecutions are largely reserved for crimes committed by people from Eastern and the Bemba-speaking provinces of Luapula, Muchinga and Northern – the Chambishi-Luangwa region that has historically voted for the main opposition Patriotic Front.

Zambians from the Tonga-speaking Southern, Lozi-speaking Western, and multiethnic (Kaonde, Luvale, and Lunda) Northwestern provinces – the Zambezi region that has historically supported Hichilema– appear to enjoy amnesty even when the offenses committed are similar.

Please join me in waiting for the Zambia Police Service to prove me wrong by arresting Maria Zaloumis – alongside the suspects already arrested.

Why use her picture with President Hakainde Hichilema?- Amb Emmanuel Mwamba

By Amb Emmanuel Mwamba

Why use her picture with President Hakainde Hichilema?

1. It is clear that from the very moment the sad incident occurred, there has been a great attempt to hide and cover-up this heinous and violent crime. Who is protecting Maria Zaloumis?

2. Official commentary and statements by the Zambia Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga that immediately shifted the blame to the deceased, the victim, accusing the victim of being sent by Fatima, the estranged wife to Nathaniel Chinyeremi Bàrtham, the current partner to Maria Zaloumis and portraying the entire incidence as an act of self-defence by Maria Zaloumis and her team and branding Eric Simfukwe as an intruder.

It must be noted that this is before official investigations were conducted, before police statements were recorded and credible facts gathered.

3. Despite the video evidence showing Maria Zaloumis and her partner actively participating in interviewing the badly beaten, tortured and shackled Eric Simfukwe Kasengele, the Zambia Police, in its statement issued by Lemekani Chirwa, Deputy Commandimg Officer, Central Province, has distanced Maria Zaloumis and only arrested: Nathaniel Bartham, Gift Daka and Fortune Mutangeti (farm irrigators) and Daniel Chilowa (farm manager).

4. The incident that led to the demise of Eric Simfukwe occurred in the day! At 17:00hrs on August 2025 at Farm No. 5 Munyama Farms (Maria Zaloumis farm in Chisamba) reducing the case of an intruder as portrayed by Rae Hamoonga no longer plausible.

5. The convoluted statement from Lemekani Chirwa, Deputy Commanding Officer states that Eric was “apprehended” at 17;00hrs in Chisamba on 16th August 2025, beaten by an alleged mob at 22:00hrs and died at Kabwe General Hospital at 01:10hrs on 17th August 2025.

Maria Zaloumis, of Munyama Farms, (who leases this farm from the family of the late FAZ Vice President, Wilfred Collins Wonani,) is the daughter of Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Board Chairperson, a key figure in the current governance and power  in Zambia.

This case is already being interfered withas seen by details and cover-up attempts by authorities.

Hypocrisy at Its Peak: Responding to Mr. Batuke Imenda, UPND SG’s Statement on Dr. Edgar C. Lungu’s Burial

By Thandiwe Ketiš Ngoma

I have taken note of the press statement issued on 20 August 2025 by the UPND Secretary General, Mr. Batuke Imenda, instructing party officials and members to desist from commenting on matters concerning the burial of our late Sixth President, Dr. Edgar C. Lungu.

Let it be made abundantly clear: this statement is nothing short of hypocritical and insulting to the intelligence of the Zambian people. After days of gross disrespect, humiliation, and torment inflicted upon the Lungu family by reckless remarks and actions from UPND members and officials, the party now wants to feign restraint. Instead of doing the honourable thing and issuing a heartfelt apology to the family for the trauma caused, the UPND leadership casually orders its members to “keep quiet,” as though such a directive can erase the pain already inflicted

Let us be specific. Senior UPND officials have publicly mocked and belittled the late President even in death, using language that no cultured person should ever use about the departed. Others have gone further to intimidate the grieving family, politicising a funeral that should have been handled with dignity and solemnity. The arrogance, the lack of empathy, and the shamelessness displayed are there for the whole nation to see.

At the very least, Mr. Imenda’s statement would have carried some weight if he had begun by acknowledging this uncultured behaviour and condemning it in the strongest terms. He should have shown leadership by distancing the party from such shameful conduct, apologising to the family of Dr. Lungu, and then issuing a directive for members to desist from making reckless statements. That would have been meaningful.

But what he has done instead is to issue a shallow and useless statement, attempting to sweep the mess under the carpet without taking responsibility. This is not leadership. This is hypocrisy at its peak.

The truth remains: it is too little, too late. If the UPND had any decency, such measures would have been put in place long before the family of the late President was subjected to such indignity. What we are witnessing now is an empty attempt at damage control and very poor damage control at that.

Dr. Edgar C. Lungu deserves dignity in death, and his family deserves peace in mourning. Yet, the arrogance with which the UPND has handled this matter has stripped both away.

And let it also be remembered: the late President himself made it clear that he did not wish for President Hakainde Hichilema to be anywhere near his remains or preside over his funeral. That wish must be respected. For the sake of peace, and out of basic decency, may President Hichilema please stay away from the funeral proceedings. His presence, after all that has transpired, would only be seen as a provocation and insult, not just to the Lungu family but also to the many Zambians who respected and loved the late President.

Chitotela Wins Asset Case Against ACC

Chitotela Wins Asset Case Against ACC

“As the irregularity was occasioned by the court’s own
mischaracterisation of the matter.”

The Supreme Court has quashed a judgement by the Economic and Financial Crimes Court that seized former tourism minister Ronald Chitotela’s property in State Lodge.

The Supreme Court has instead directed that the matter should be heard afresh in an ordinary High Court not in the Economic and Financial Crimes Court.

The Anti Corruption Commission grabbed Chitotela’ s property on the grounds that it was proceeds of criminal activities.

In response, Ronald Chitotela sued the ACC, seeking a declaration that his State Lodge property, seized by the ACC was legally and genuinely acquired.

But the matter was allocated to the Economic and Financial Crimes Court which duly dismissed the petition on the grounds that Chitotela failed to prove his claims on a balance of probabilities.

Chitotela challenged the decision of the Financial Crimes Court alleging that the matter hinges on his constitutional rights and should be heard by an ordinary high court division instead of the Financial Crimes division.

He argued that there were irregularities in the way the matter was transferred from the ordinary High Court to the Economic and Financial Crimes Court.

His appeal was dismissed by the Court of Appeal but the Supreme Court has agreed with him.

The matter will start afresh in the High Court.

Chitotela is in prison and the court’s have denied him bail pending appeal.

STATE HOUSE SAYS PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S CHOICE OF TRANSPORT NOT A MATTER OF PUBLIC CONCERN

By Chamuka Shalubala

State House Chief Communication Specialist Clayson Hamasaka says President Hakainde Hichilema is at liberty to use any mode of transport to attend to his official engagements.

Mr. Hamasaka has emphasized that the mode of transportation used by the Head of State should not be a matter of public concern, as what matters most is the purpose and outcome of the President’s engagements.

Reacting to public concerns about the President’s mode of transport during his recent engagements, Mr. Hamasaka has clarified that the presidential jet is currently not in use due to routine maintenance, leading to the continued use of Pro-Flight Airways by the Head of State.

He spoke to Phoenix News in an interview.

FRA clerks demands s3xu@l favours from women farmers in exchange for buying their maize quickly

Sex-for-Maize Scandal

By Angela Mtambo in Kasama

-Some FRA clerks are being accused of demanding sexual favours from women farmers in exchange for buying their maize quickly.

-One woman said a clerk told her she would only be helped fast if she “cooperated,” and she had seen other women giving in.

-Another reported being harassed with compliments and requests to meet at night. When she refused, her maize was ignored for a week.

Farmers in Northern Province are raising alarm over what they describe as widespread corruption, inefficiency, and mistreatment by Food Reserve Agency (FRA) officers at satellite depots during this year’s maize marketing season.

Radio Mano visited several FRA depots dotted in five districts in Northern Province, and the situation was almost the same everywhere. Piles of maize were stacked high, while tired farmers—men and women and in some cases children—sat nearby, unsure of when they would be attended to. Their names were written down, but the lists were never followed.

At Misengo depot in Lunte district, farmers complained that waiting lists were ignored, leaving them frustrated and hopeless. And in Misambo in the same district, hundreds of bags of maize already bought were left uncollected—a clear sign of inefficiency.

Robert Mutale, a farmer at Misengo depot, told Radio Mano that he had spent more than a month sleeping at the satellite depot without being attended to.

“We are suffering here. Some of us have been here for weeks. If you speak out, they tell you they won’t attend to you unless you pay them,” Mutale said.

Sharon Kabwe, a farmer from Kasama, accused depot clerks of demanding money for empty grain bags—sometimes up to K800 for 150 bags—and showing favouritism to wealthier suppliers.

“They buy from big suppliers first and leave us small-scale farmers stranded. Some women have even been sexually harassed in exchange for having their maize bought quickly,” Kabwe alleged.

Sexual Favour Demands Targeting Women Farmers

Even more disturbing are allegations by some female farmers that some FRA clerks are demanding sexual favours in exchange for faster service.

“He told me I would be helped quickly if I ‘cooperated’,” said a female farmer from Kasama, her voice trembling. “I have seen other women accepting.”

“He kept saying I’m beautiful and asked me to meet him at night. When I said no, my maize stayed for a week.”

Favouritism and Inefficiency

Farmers also report that even when they arrive early, they are pushed back in the line if they don’t have connections within FRA or money.

“They serve their friends and relatives first,” said a farmer from Misengo village. “Some even arrive late and still go ahead of the queue.”

Farmers also complain about slow operations and absenteeism by depot staff.

“By 11am, they say they are going for lunch. We are left sitting with our maize in the sun,” said a farmer at Kasama Central satellite depot.

Poor Sanitation and Inhumane Conditions

Some farmers, especially women, spend multiple nights at depots, waiting for their turn without access to clean water or toilets.

“There is nowhere to bathe or relieve ourselves,” said a woman from Lubushi. “It’s not safe or healthy.”

In one video clip reviewed by Mano filmed at Musuba satelite in chilunga ward in kasama central constituency, women are seen cooking by the roadside, their maize stacked beside them, as children play nearby in dust and heat.

Mano has also established that clerks are extorting farmers and traders, demanding unofficial payments before granting access to depot services. In one instance, this reporter, posing as a customer during an undercover investigation, was asked to pay K1,865 to sell 200 bags of maize.

A source within the FRA, who asked to remain anonymous, claimed that some of the misconduct could be linked to the fact that depot clerks have not been paid for the past month.

“Although this does not justify the corruption, the workers are frustrated,” the source said.

Chiefs and Clergy Speak Out

Senior Chief Mwamba confirmed that he has received multiple reports from his subjects regarding corruption at depots in Kasama.

“These are serious allegations. I am warning both farmers and depot clerks to refrain from such acts,” he said.

Fr. Christian Muselela of Lubushi Minor Seminary, urged the government to open alternative markets, specify the number of maize bags to be purchased this year, and improve road infrastructure to ease transportation.

“Corruption is killing the country’s growth. Farmers must resist it, and the government must act,” he stressed.

“If this continues, those involved risk being taken to court for corruption,” Mpundu said.

When Mano contacted some of the accused depot clerks, they declined to comment. One of them responded: “We don’t talk to the media. Go ahead and report the matter to the PMC (Provincial Marketing Coordinator).”

FRA’s Zero Tolerance to Corruption

In response to the allegations, the FRA issued a statement condemning the reported misconduct.

“The Agency wishes to categorically state that such behaviour, if proven to be true, is wholly unacceptable, unethical, and illegal,” said John Chipandwe, FRA’s Public Relations Coordinator. “The Agency maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of corruption, bribery, and abuse of authority.”

He confirmed that investigations would be launched and that any individuals found culpable would face disciplinary action.
On the allegations of sexual harassment, the FRA described them as “extremely disturbing.”

“Any form of sexual harassment, exploitation, or abuse is strictly prohibited,” Chipandwe added. “We encourage farmers, especially those affected, to report such cases to the nearest FRA regional offices or police stations.”

Responding to complaints about unfair treatment of farmers, Chipandwe said: “FRA operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Farmers are encouraged to clean their grain at home to reduce waiting time.” He explained that FRA field officers conduct regular monitoring to ensure procedures are followed.

However, farmers like Mutale and Kabwe insist the situation on the ground is far different from what the agency describes.

“We just want fairness. If they can pay us on time and stop corruption, we will all be happy,” Robert said.

FRA is currently buying maize nationwide and aims to purchase more than 500,000 metric tons this year. Official guidelines state that depot clerks are entitled to overtime pay through the agency—not from farmers.

Government’s Response

Northern Province Permanent Secretary Bernard Mpundu, warned depot clerks against collecting money from farmers under the pretext of overtime.

Lusaka, August 21, 2025 — Israel has reopened its embassy in Zambia after more than five decades, a development credited to President Hakainde Hichilema’s sustained diplomatic efforts to strengthen Zambia’s global partnerships.

The milestone follows President Hichilema’s 2023 State Visit to Israel, during which he signed the General Framework Agreement of Cooperation with the Government of Israel. That agreement laid the groundwork for the deepening of bilateral relations and directly influenced the decision to re-establish Israel’s diplomatic mission in Lusaka.

At the reopening ceremony, officiated by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, underscored the central role President Hichilema played in shaping this outcome.

“The reopening of the Embassy is a direct result of President Hichilema’s vision and commitment to diplomacy. His engagement with Israel in 2023 has borne fruit, consolidating our cooperation and unlocking new opportunities in trade, agriculture, science and technology, health, climate change, and cultural exchange,” Mr. Haimbe said.

Foreign Minister Sa’ar praised Zambia for rekindling relations, describing the embassy’s reopening as “a new chapter rooted in common interests, shared values and ancient traditions based on the Holy Bible.

The Minister recalled that the relations between Zambia and Israel date back to 1964, established by Zambia’s First President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda.

He highlighted Israel’s resilience in overcoming challenges and the commitment to share the Israeli Government’s successes and capabilities with friends such as Zambia. The Minister noted that the new embassy will contribute to deepening Israel’s bilateral relations and partnerships with Zambia to create a better future for both countries.

Mr. Sa’ar emphasised Israel’s strategic goal in 2025, under the Foreign Ministry, of strengthening engagement with Africa, nothing that the opening of the Embassy in Zambia remained one of the cornerstones of the plan.

Israel’s Ambassador to Zambia, Her Excellency Ofra Farhi, expressed joy at witnessing the embassy’s reopening, highlighting her role in facilitating the milestone. She emphasized that the embassy would serve as a hub for enhancing collaboration across multiple sectors for the benefit of both nations.
