NO DECISION YET ON US$1 BILLION HEALTH FUNDING-Diamond Tv
By Victoria Kayeye Yambani

Government has not yet made a decision regarding the reported US$1 billion health funding debate.
Chief Government Spokesperson and Acting Minister of Health, Cornelius Mweetwa, says the matter is still before Cabinet, and once a formal resolution is reached, the nation will be informed at an appropriate time.
Mr. Mweetwa has also cautioned freelance journalists against misrepresenting Zambia’s position to international media, warning that misleading narratives risk damaging the country’s longstanding diplomatic relations.
He dismissed reports of a fallout between the Ministry of Health and the United States Government, stressing that Zambia continues to enjoy cordial relations with the U.S. and remains engaged in ongoing dialogue, just as it does with other cooperating partners.
The clarification follows growing public anxiety over the reported funding package.
On 17th November 2025, the Ministry of Health and the United States Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding under which the U.S. committed approximately US$1.5 billion over five years starting April 2026.
The funding is earmarked for critical areas in Zambia’s health sector, including human resources for health, medical commodities, data systems, laboratory services and logistics strengthening.
In recent days, speculation about a misunderstanding between the two governments sparked widespread debate, prompting authorities to break their silence and reassure the nation.
It is easy to throw around terms like “entitlement” and “betrayal,” but leadership is defined by adherence to the rule of law, not by how one feels on social media. The comparison between the current PF leadership’s roadmap and Hon. Brian Mundubile’s past actions is a false equivalence for the following reasons:
1. LEGITIMACY OF MANDATE VS INDIVIDUAL AMBITION What Mundubile attempted was a unilateral move outside the established Patriotic Front (PF) guidelines, processes, and procedures. A political party is not a “free-for-all” where any member can wake up and decide to hold a convention. In contrast, the current path being taken by the PF under Hon. Given Lubinda is a collective, sanctioned decision by the party’s central organs.
2. THE NATURE OF THE PSV(SPECIAL PURPOSE VEHICLE) The term PSV in this context refers to a strategic mechanism adopted by the institution to navigate current political and legal hurdles.
Mundubile’s PSV: Was an individual decision used to bypass the party hierarchy for personal advancement.
The PF’s PSV: Is a collective party decision aimed at preserving the movement. There is a massive difference between a soldier deserting his post to start his own fire (Mundubile) and a General re-strategizing with his entire unit to win a battle (Lubinda).
3. COLLECTIVE INCLUSIVITY VS ISOLATION IP fails to acknowledge that the current roadmap involves all stakeholders and presidential hopefuls. Decisions regarding the convention and the party’s direction are being made through the Central Committee, ensuring that all those who expressed interest in the presidency are part of the engagement. Mundubile’s actions were exclusionary; the current process is consultative.
4. BRANDING AND LOYALTY It is now glaringly clear that Mundubile has moved away from the core values of the PF. His current trajectory suggests he is more of an FDD brand than a PF stalwart. You cannot claim to love a house while you are busy trying to set fire to its foundations.
5. THE ENTITLEMENT MIRROR IP mentions that “the spirit of entitlement destroys institutions.” He is right—but he is pointing the finger in the wrong direction. Entitlement is when an individual believes they are bigger than the party constitution.
True leadership is shown by those who stay to fix the party through its internal systems, not those who jump ship or create parallel structures when they don’t get their way.
In summary education without discipline is indeed dangerous. The PF remains a structured organization governed by rules, not by the whims of individuals who seek to shortcut their way to power.
STATEMENT: Brian Sampa distances himself from rogue Facebook pages
I wish to categorically state that at no point have I ever known, been associated with, or participated in any political pages or movements, including those referred to as “Munyaule” or “Zambia for All 2026.”
As people may recall, this is the second time fabricated stories have been written about me. Last year, unscrupulous individuals falsely alleged that I had been arrested by the police at the airport — a claim that was completely untrue. It is deeply concerning that the same individuals appear to be behind these current baseless allegations.
I am aware of the statements currently circulating, and I wish to make it clear that they are entirely false and without any factual foundation.
I believe in integrity, respect, and responsible citizenship. I would never descend to engaging in or supporting divisive political activities of that nature. Such politics have no place in our society, as they only create unnecessary division and damage reputations.
I kindly urge members of the public to treat these claims as malicious, misleading, and without any basis in truth.
🇿🇲 BRIEFING | Police Arrest Suspect Over Fake Presidential Resignation Letter
The Zambia Police Service has arrested 40-year-old Richard Kaunda Mulenga of Luangwa Compound, Lusaka, in connection with the circulation of a fabricated resignation letter attributed to President Hakainde Hichilema.
In a statement issued Saturday, police confirmed that Mulenga has been charged with Making a Document Without Authority, contrary to Section 356 of the Penal Code, and Transmission of Deceptive Electronic Communication under Section 19(1)(a) of the Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025.
Police allege that on February 26, 2026, Mulenga, described as the creator and administrator of a Facebook page known as “Zambia for All 2026,” published a falsified letter purporting to announce the President’s resignation. The document, which bore official insignia and formatting, quickly circulated online before being dismissed as fake by the ruling UPND and State House.
“The publication is alleged to have been false and misleading to members of the public both within and outside the country,” Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha said, adding that the suspect was apprehended following a joint operation with other law enforcement agencies.
The arrest follows heightened concern over the growing misuse of social media platforms to spread political misinformation. Police have reiterated their commitment to curbing digital falsehoods and have urged the public to verify information through official government communication channels.
Mulenga remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon.
Copperbelt businessman shoots himself dead at home!
CCTV footage at Chingola Businessman’s residence Maposa Nkhuwa has revealed how he shot himself dead.
Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer, Mwala Yuyi, has confirmed the incident in a statement.
Yuyi says Nkhuwa, who owned Old Spring Mining Company, was found dead with a gunshot wound on the head by his driver, Maurice Mwansa, around 06:30 hours on February 28, 2026.
He says Mwansa reported that Nkhuwa had seemed quiet but normal the previous night, with no signs of disturbance or conflict.
Yuyi says Police investigations revealed that Nkhuwa used a Glock pistol, Austria, bearing serial number BVZC714, loaded with 8 rounds of ammunition, to shoot himself.
He says CCTV footage confirmed that Nkuwa shot himself dead.
Yuyi noted that the firearm has been recovered, along with one empty bullet cartridge.
He adds that the motive behind the incident is still unknown.
The body has since been deposited at Nchanga South General Hospital Mortuary pending further investigation.
If my dad lived, I wouldn’t be an artiste – Macky 2
ZAMBIAN hip-hop star Macky 2 has revealed that his music career might have not existed if his father had not died, saying the loss changed the entire course of his life.
Macky 2, real name Mulaza Kaira, said his father was deeply committed to academics and had clear expectations for his future.
According to Macky 2, his father died when he was 15 and his mother seven years earlier – a double tragedy that forced him to mature early.
“If my dad was around, there was no way I was going to be an artiste. My dad was big on academics. I’m sure he would have wanted me to be an accountant, engineer or a lawyer, in general just having a formal job,” he stated.
Appearing on #DadsWithoutDads podcast, the award-winning artiste recalled that the moment his father passed, he became fully aware that his life had permanently changed.
“I was just 15 and I knew exactly what I was going through. I just remember knowing, telling myself and accepting that I’m now an orphan,” he said.
Following his father’s death, the rapper moved to live with relatives in Chingola, a transition he said came with hard lessons about responsibility and survival.
“I knew I didn’t have the opportunities I had when my dad was alive. I couldn’t afford to be nonchalant about school or how I carried myself,” he explained.
Determined not to be a burden, Macky 2 said he made a deliberate decision to prove his value in the household.
“When someone is trying to help you, show that you can make it happen. I deliberately tried to make myself an asset, not a liability,” he said, adding that he would do chores and avoid trouble at all costs.
“Why should you bring trouble when you are being kept?” he added.
The ‘Soilange’ hitmaker believes that the pain he experienced played a major role in shaping his independence and work ethic.
“Me losing my dad made me more independent, more aware, more deliberate about who I wanted to become. It made me work harder than I would have if he was there as a safety net,” he said.
Macky 2 added that the hardships that once felt overwhelming ultimately shaped his path, turning loss into the drive that built one of Zambia’s most respected music careers.
NYIMBA WOMAN KILLED AFTER BEING FOUND COHABITING WITH MARRIED MAN IN MOZAMBIQUE
A 38-YEAR-OLD woman of Nyimba District has been killed in Mozambique, after allegedly cohabiting with a married man during her business visit.
Linah Musasu was allegedly stabbed in the chest with a knife by Selipa Edison, of Zambwe in Mozambique.
Eastern Province police commanding officer Robertson Mweemba said the incident happened on Wednesday between 21:00 hours and 23:00 hours at Chiponde, a business area in Mozambique.
“This woman left her home village in Nyimba and went to Mozambique to do business at Chiponde Gold Mine,” Mr Mweemba said.
“During her stay at the business area, she found a man friend and started cohabitating with him, not knowing that he was married.”
Later when the wife of the man noticed, a fight erupted between the two women, resulting in Ms Masasu being stabbed. “The assailant, who is believed to be a Mozambican, escaped unhurt and fled,” he said.
Ms Musasu sustained a wound on the chest and was rushed to a clinic, where she was declared a ‘brought-in-dead’. “Upon review of the body by a clinician, they noticed a penetrating knife wound on the right side of the chest,” Mr Mweemba said.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, is no longer in Tehran and has been moved to a secure location, according to an Iranian official who spoke to Reuters.
The development comes after Israel and the United States carried out preemptive strikes on Iran early Saturday morning. Explosions were reported across Tehran, while Israel declared a nationwide state of emergency.
At the time of the surprise assault by the Israel Defense Forces, authorities issued an urgent nationwide advisory, instructing citizens to remain close to protected spaces.
“This is a proactive alert to prepare the public for the possibility of missiles being launched toward the State of Israel,” the military said in a statement.
Patrice Motsepe’s new website fuels rumour of ANC presidential bid
A website launched this week under the banner of South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe is fuelling speculation that the mining magnate is positioning himself to contest the presidency of the ANC in 2027, potentially setting up a succession battle to replace President Cyril Ramaphosa as party leader. The site, pm27.org.za, went live without prior announcement and carries branding that aligns Motsepe’s initials with the year of the ANC’s next elective conference.
“PM27 stands as a movement to rally South Africans behind Patrice Motsepe — a leader whose credibility, business acumen and commitment to ethical governance offer hope for true national renewal,” the website said. “Rooted in the spirit of ‘Savumelana’ (’Let’s Agree’), PM27 is more than a campaign, it is a call to action for every citizen and ANC member to build a future defined by unity, progress and opportunity.
Our mission is to position Patrice Motsepe as the most credible, unifying and visionary leader to guide the ANC and South Africa into a new era — one where integrity is the foundation and every voice is valued.” Neither Motsepe nor the ANC’s national leadership has issued an official statement confirming a campaign. Under ANC rules, candidates must be nominated by branches and vetted through formal structures before their names appear on a conference ballot.
The ANC is expected to hold its next leadership conference in 2027, where party delegates will elect a president and other senior officials. Ramaphosa secured a second term as party leader in 2022.
That has opened the field to potential successors, including Deputy President Paul Mashatile and ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, though formal nominations have not yet opened and factional positioning remains largely behind closed doors.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was just live on NBC News as the internet remains down for the majority in Iran.
Araghchi says that Iran “may have lost one or two commanders”. He also says that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is “alive” as far as he is aware.
Iranian outlets have so far denied that a number of Iranian officials and commanders have been killed, including the president and commander-in-chief of the Army.
Araghchi says that Iran is keen on de-escalation and is open to negotiations, provided that the US and Israel cease their attacks.
While saying that there are no communications “right now”, Araghchi adds that “if the Americans want to talk to us, they know how they can contact me”.
Iran and the US have been engaged in renewed nuclear talks, with the latest round happening two days ago.Araghchi also confirms that Iran is attacking American bases in the region, but describes it as an act of “self-defence”.
Republican Rep. Thomas Massie, a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, said the US strikes against Iran are “not ‘America first.’”
“I am opposed to this War. This is not ‘America First,’” Massie wrote on X Saturday morning, suggesting the president’s actions don’t align with his campaign promise and his base’s wish to avoid foreign entanglements.
The conservative Kentucky Republican, who’s been a thorn in the president’s side and is facing a Trump-backed primary challenger, renewed his calls for congressional authorization for military action in Iran.
“When Congress reconvenes, I will work with @RepRoKhanna to force a Congressional vote on war with Iran,” Massie wrote. “The Constitution requires a vote, and your Representative needs to be on record as opposing or supporting this war.”
Khanna criticized Trump’s actions as “an illegal regime change war in Iran” and echoed calls for Congress to vote on their war powers resolution.
Massie and his Democratic colleague from California last year worked together to force a House vote on the release of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune on Saturday praised President Donald Trump for taking military action to subvert what he said were clear threats posed by Iran.
Tehran, he said, had “refused the diplomatic off-ramps” presented by the administration before the US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
“For years, Iran’s relentless nuclear ambitions, its expanded ballistic missile inventory, and its unwavering support for terror groups in the region have posed a clear and unacceptable threat to U.S. servicemembers, citizens in the region, and many of our allies. Despite the dogged efforts of the president and his administration, the Iranian regime has refused the diplomatic off-ramps that would peacefully resolve these national security concerns. I commend President Trump for taking action to thwart these threats,” Thune said in a statement on X.
Thune also thanked Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whom he said provided updates to him throughout the week, adding that he looks forward to an all-senator briefing.
“I thank Secretary Rubio for providing updates on these issues throughout the week, and I look forward to administration officials briefing all senators about these military operations,” Thune said.
CNN previously reported that Rubio had notified at least some of the members of the “Gang of Eight” in advance of the strikes — including Thune — but they were not given a full accounting of the legal justification, multiple sources familiar with the matter said.
Dr. Allyson Friedman, a tenured associate professor at Hunter College in New York City, who is White, has been placed on leave after making racist remarks about Black students during a Zoom call. Her comments sparked outrage both online and within the university community.
Friedman’s comments were heard during a February 10 virtual meeting for New York City School District 3. An eighth-grade Black student was speaking about proposed school closures when Friedman, participating as a parent, was accidentally unmuted, according to Atlanta Black Star.
She said, “They’re too dumb to know they’re in a bad school,” referencing a supposed quote about Black students. “Apparently, Martin Luther King said it — if you train a Black person well enough, they’ll know to use the back, you don’t have to tell them anymore.”
Other participants were shocked, and one quickly intervened. “Allyson Friedman, what you’re saying is absolutely hearable here. You’ve got to stop,” a man said during the call. Friedman later claimed she was citing a historical quote by Carter G. Woodson mentioned by the district superintendent, but the remarks had already caused significant backlash.
Hunter College confirmed Friedman is on leave. President Nancy Cantor called the remarks “abhorrent” and stressed the university’s commitment to maintaining an inclusive environment free from discrimination.
Friedman defended herself, saying she was trying to explain systemic racism to her child, who was in the room during the call. She insisted the comments did not reflect her own beliefs, apologized for the harm caused, and expressed support for students opposing the school closures.
The school district’s plan would close two under-enrolled schools and repurpose a building on the Upper West Side, raising concerns among parents and community members about the impact on Black and Latino students. Hunter College has not said how long Friedman will remain on leave or if further disciplinary measures will follow.
The FBI has fired at least 10 agents who took part in investigations into President Trump, including the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case. The moves are part of a broader “purge” under Director Kash Patel targeting employees linked to Trump probes.
The latest terminations affected employees involved in the Mar-a-Lago investigation, which looked into Trump keeping top-secret documents from his first presidential term. The case included the high-profile FBI search of his Florida resort and federal charges for obstruction, according to the Associated Press.
The firings come amid a broader pattern under Patel, a Trump appointee, who has dismissed dozens of agents and prosecutors over the past year. Many were involved in Trump-related investigations or seen as misaligned with the administration. The Justice Department has made similar sweeping changes to prosecutors since Trump returned to office.
The FBI Agents Association condemned the firings, calling them unlawful and harmful to national security. “These actions weaken the Bureau by stripping away critical expertise and destabilizing the workforce, undermining trust in leadership and jeopardizing the Bureau’s ability to meet its recruitment goals — ultimately putting the nation at greater risk,” the group said.
Some of the agents removed had also worked on the separate 2020 election investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn the vote. Both cases had led to criminal charges but were paused after Trump returned to office, following longstanding Justice Department rules that prevent indicting a sitting president.
Patel revealed the shake-up the same day he confirmed that the FBI, during the Biden administration, had subpoenaed his phone records and those of White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. He had previously testified under immunity in the Mar-a-Lago case before a grand jury in 2022.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has condemned Iran’s retaliatory attacks on neighbouring countries after joint strikes from the US and Israel earlier today.
In a joint statement with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, he says: “France, Germany and the United Kingdom have consistently urged the Iranian regime to end Iran’s nuclear programme, curb its ballistic missile programme, refrain from its destabilising activity in the region and our homelands, and to cease the appalling violence and repression against its own people.
“We did not participate in these strikes, but are in close contact with our international partners, including the United States, Israel and partners in the region. We reiterate our commitment to regional stability and to the protection of civilian life.
“We condemn Iranian attacks on countries in the region in the strongest terms. Iran must refrain from indiscriminate military strikes. We urge the Iranian leadership to seek a negotiated solution. Ultimately, the Iranian people must be allowed to determine their future.”
Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the US and Israeli strikes in Iran raise “serious legal and constitutional concerns.”
“The Constitution is clear: the decision to take this nation to war rests with Congress, and launching large-scale military operations – particularly in the absence of an imminent threat to the United States – raises serious legal and constitutional concerns,” he said in a statement Saturday.
CNN previously reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio notified some of the members of the “Gang of Eight” in advance of the strikes — including Warner — but they were not given a full accounting of the legal justification, multiple sources familiar with the matter said.
“Congress must be fully briefed, and the administration must come forward with a clear legal justification, a defined end state, and a plan that avoids dragging the United States into yet another costly and unnecessary war,” Warner added in his statement.-CNN
Zimbabwe Moves from Exam-Focused Learning to Skills-Based Education
Zimbabwe is accelerating reforms in its education sector, moving away from an examination-centred system towards one anchored on skills development and lifelong learning, Primary and Secondary Education Deputy Minister Angeline Gata has said.
She made the remarks during International Day of Education commemorations held at Chinhoyi Technical High School in Chinhoyi, where Government officials, educators, development partners and learners gathered to reflect on the evolving role of education.
From Testing to Talent Development Addressing delegates, Deputy Minister Gata said the country’s Heritage-Based Education 5.0 model is designed to equip learners with practical competencies rather than focusing solely on examinations.
According to The Herald, she urged pupils to prioritise digital literacy, innovation and entrepreneurship, noting that the modern economy rewards adaptability and critical thinking.
“Skills pay, so make sure you invest in them. Support each other as learners and avoid bullying. When young people are given a genuine seat at the table to contribute meaningfully, they do not just participate they transform,” she stated, encouraging learners to invest in abilities that will sustain them beyond the classroom.
Youth at the Centre of Reform This year’s commemorations, held under the global theme “The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education,” emphasised the need to actively involve young people in shaping curricula and school governance structures.
Deputy Minister Gata said education systems in the past were largely designed for young people without fully consulting them. She stressed that meaningful youth participation fosters ownership, responsibility and improved academic outcomes.
She added that the participatory approach reflects the philosophy of Ubuntu/unhu, which promotes shared growth and collective responsibility.
Embracing Technology and AI With rapid technological change reshaping societies, learners were encouraged to embrace artificial intelligence and digital transformation. Deputy Minister Gata said technology integration is no longer optional but essential in preparing pupils for global competitiveness.
She highlighted the importance of digital literacy, problem-solving skills and integrity in building an education system suited for the 21st century.
Provincial Commitment to Transformation Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Marian Chombo described the theme as a call to action, urging stakeholders to move from viewing learners as passive recipients of knowledge to recognising them as active contributors.
She said the province is investing in infrastructure and digital access while strengthening partnerships with organisations such as the Education Coalition of Zimbabwe, the National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH) and the National Association of Primary School Heads (NAPH).
Learners Call for Responsible Innovation Speaking on behalf of students, child president Lionnel Mazarire encouraged fellow learners to make responsible use of expanding digital opportunities, including internet access initiatives.
He urged young people to leverage technology to propose solutions to national challenges while avoiding harmful behaviours.
Education stakeholders echoed the message, reaffirming their commitment to inclusive, skills-based learning that prepares Zimbabwean learners for both employment and lifelong growth.
🚨 BREAKING: THE FALL OF M23’S VOICE & THE REGIONAL AFTERSHOCK 🚨
The confirmed killing of Willy Ngoma in a precision drone strike near Rubaya marks a turning point in the DRC conflict. While the smoke clears in North Kivu, the real fire is burning in the diplomatic corridors of neighboring capitals.
The Target: Willy Ngoma (M23 Military Spokesperson) The Strike: February 24, 2026 – Masisi Territory, DRC. 🌍 The “Invisible” Hand: Which Leaders are Feeling the Heat?
This strike does more than “neutralize” a commander; it sends a message to the presidents who have long been linked to M23’s operations.
🇷🇼 President Paul Kagame (Rwanda): Despite consistent denials from Kigali, the UN and Western intelligence have repeatedly documented Rwanda’s support for M23. For Kagame, the death of a top official like Ngoma is a “red line” moment. It proves that the Congolese army (FARDC), backed by new drone tech and Eastern European contractors, can now strike the “inner circle” of the rebellion. This puts immense pressure on Rwanda to either escalate its military presence or risk losing its strategic proxy in the DRC.
🇺🇬 President Yoweri Museveni (Uganda): Uganda’s role has been a complex “balancing act.” While fighting the ADF (a different rebel group), Uganda has often been accused by Kinshasa of turning a blind eye to M23 movements across its borders. The killing of Ngoma forces Museveni to pick a side more clearly, as the DRC government is now emboldened to strike targets closer to the Ugandan border.
🇧🇮 President Évariste Ndayishimiye (Burundi): Unlike the others, Ndayishimiye has sent troops to fight M23 alongside the DRC. However, the escalation following Ngoma’s death threatens to drag Burundi into a full-scale regional war if M23’s backers decide to retaliate against DRC’s allies.
📉 What Happens Next? A Strategy Shift: With Ngoma gone and General Sultani Makenga narrowly escaping the same fate, the M23 leadership is now “underground.” Expect a shift from open press conferences to more shadow-warfare tactics.
Diplomatic Deadlock: The Qatar-mediated peace talks are now on life support. Kinshasa feels they are winning via technology; M23 feels they must avenge their “voice.”
The “silent war” between Felix Tshisekedi and his neighbors is no longer silent. The drones have changed the rules of the game.
New Jersey Democratic Sen. Andy Kim on Saturday called for lawmakers to return to Washington and immediately pass a war powers resolution that would limit the president’s authority to carry out additional military action against Iran without congressional approval.
“Right now, I have zero confidence in this president who has so flagrantly violated our Constitution. That is why we should have Congress immediately go back into session for the War Powers vote to reassert the American people’s will, which, again, they don’t want to be at war,” Kim, who sits on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.
He continued: “I’m ready to go right back to the Senate today. I think we should be having Congress immediately in session to review this.”
Kim joins Virginia Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine, a key lawmaker behind the war powers effort, in calling on Capitol Hill to demand congressional approval for future US military action.
🚨 Breaking News: H0uthis Announce Resumption of Attacks on Shipping in the Red Sea – Trump-Brokered Ceasefire Effectively Over 🚨
Yemen’s Iran-backed H0uthi rebels (Ans∆rullah Movement) have declared they will resume attacks on vessels in the Red Sea corridor. This move comes amid escalating regional tensions following recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, with H0uthi officials signaling solidarity and potential immediate action.
The announcement effectively ends the fragile de-escalation that followed the U.S.-H0uthi ceasefire negotiated under President Donald Trump in May 2025 (brokered by Oman). That agreement halted U.S. strikes on H0uthi targets in exchange for the rebels ceasing attacks on American vessels and broader shipping disruptions. While attacks largely paused after the October 2025 G∆za ceasefire, the H0uthis have repeatedly warned of resumption tied to regional developments, including support for Iran.
Today’s development threatens to disrupt global trade through the vital Bab al-Mandeb Strait once again, potentially forcing rerouting around Africa, spiking shipping costs, and impacting oil prices and supply chains worldwide.
Source: Associated Press (AP), as cited in multiple real-time reports and X posts from credible monitors on February 28, 2026. Regional powers are on high alert as this could mark the re-entry of H0uthi maritime operations into the broader conflict dynamics. Stay tuned for updates.
UK Fighter Jets Now Active in Middle East Skies as Part of Coordinated Defensive Operations – Prime Minister Keir Starmer Confirms
London, 28 February 2026 – British military aircraft are operating over the Middle East (West Asia) today in support of coordinated regional defensive operations, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced.
In a televised national address, Starmer stated: “UK planes are in the sky today in the Middle East as part of coordinated regional defensive operations to protect our people, our interests and our allies.”
The deployment follows escalating tensions in the region after recent US-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent Iranian retaliatory actions. Starmer emphasised that the UK is not participating in offensive strikes, but has strengthened its defensive posture including RAF Typhoon and F-35 assets to safeguard British personnel, regional allies and key interests.
The Prime Minister chaired an emergency COBRA meeting earlier today and called for immediate de-escalation while reaffirming the UK’s commitment to the security of its partners.
Iranian state media have denied reports that senior political officials and the country’s army chief were killed in a wave of US-Israeli strikes on the country today.
President Masoud Pezeshkian is safe, his executive deputy, Mohammad Jafar Qaempanah says in a post on X, external. The president’s son, Youssef Pezeshkian, writes on Telegram, external that “this time their assassination attempts have not succeeded”.
The army has denied the death of its commander Maj Gen Amir Hatami, and the hardline Fars News Agency says Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and the head of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani remain unharmed.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has said its strikes in Tehran targeted locations where senior political and security figures were gathered.
🚨 POLITICAL SHAKE-UP: Floyd Shivambu Faces Collective Resignations as Reports Suggest Growing Regional Discontent Within His New Movement 🚨
A fresh political storm is brewing around Floyd Shivambu after a group of regional officials reportedly submitted collective resignations, raising questions about internal unity and support structures within his newly established political formation.
According to emerging reports, several officials from Limpopo stepped down together, signaling what some insiders describe as dissatisfaction over leadership direction and organisational strategy. While details around the internal disagreements remain limited, the coordinated nature of the resignations has fueled speculation that regional support may be weakening in certain provinces.
This development comes at a sensitive time for the Afrika Mayibuye Movement, which is still in its formative phase and working to build structures nationwide ahead of upcoming electoral processes. Political analysts say that early-stage instability can affect grassroots mobilisation, fundraising efforts, and public confidence — especially when resignations involve multiple leaders at once.
However, Shivambu and his allies are said to be downplaying the situation, framing it as part of a broader internal restructuring process. Supporters argue that new political movements often experience early turbulence as they refine leadership structures and clarify ideological direction. They maintain that the party remains focused on expanding its footprint and consolidating support.
Critics, on the other hand, see the resignations as a potential warning sign. In South African politics, regional backing is crucial — particularly in provinces like Limpopo, where political identity and loyalty can significantly influence electoral outcomes. Losing coordinated regional leadership, even temporarily, can disrupt momentum and messaging.
The bigger question now is whether this is simply growing pains for a young political organisation — or the beginning of deeper internal fractures.
As South Africa’s political landscape continues to shift, all eyes will be on how Shivambu navigates this challenge, rebuilds confidence, and strengthens structures ahead of the next major political contest.
📌 Do you think these resignations are normal for a new political movement — or do they signal serious trouble ahead? Let’s discuss.
Arrested PF cadre cracks, implicates Dr Brian Sampa as main admin of rogue Facebook page
DETAINED PF cadre Richard Kaunda Mulenga of the ‘Banene’ opposition duo has cracked under pressure and admitted to being an admin of the rogue Facebook page “Zambia for all 2026”.
In his chat with police who are accommodating him for the weekend, the 40-year old has implicated former Resident Doctors Association of Zambia Dr Brian Sampa, naming him as his boss and the main admin of the page.
Mulenga, has in the past months been a vocal proponent of regime change, churning out daily criticism of the government and pro-PF content through short videos which he shares on Facebook.
No longer able to wait for the August 13 elections, Mulenga decided to help President Hakainde Hichilema leave office by false resignation.
He allegedly went on to author a fake letter announcing the resignation of the Head of State.
To give it some semblance of authenticity, the 40-year old sealed the letter with a forged signature of State House Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka, pasted it on a presidential letterhead and stamped it with a date stamp before sharing it on online.
Soon after it’s publication, Cyber Security agents swang into quick action and apprehended Mulenga from his hiding place in Lusaka’s Luangwa Compound.
According to sources close to the investigation, Mulenga did not even need much encouragement to start talking.
He readily admitted to being an admin of the rogue Facebook page saying he had been recruited by Dr Sampa who is now serving the US army.
In confirming Mulenga’s arrest, Zambia Police Service deputy public relations officer Chipo Kaitisha said the suspect has been charged with offences of Making a Document without Authority Contrary to Section 356 of Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia, and Transmission of Deceptive Electronic Communication Contrary to Section 19(1)(a) of the Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025.
Kaitisha said the cadre was apprehended following a joint operation conducted by the Zambia Police Service in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies.
“It is alleged that on February 26, 2026, Richard Kaunda Mulenga, in his capacity as the creator and administrator of a Facebook page known as “Zambia for All 2026,” falsely published a fabricated letter purporting to announce the resignation of the Republican President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Force, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema,” Kaitisha told ##Kalemba in a statement.
“The publication is alleged to have been false and misleading to members of the public both within and outside the country,” she added.
Kaitisha reiterated the commitment of the Zambia Police Service in combating the spread of misinformation, urging members of the public to verify information through official Government communication channels.
On Tuesday, cyber security agents picked Mambwe Zimba, the Secretary General of the Saboi Imboela-led NDC in connection with a Facebook post which depicted the image of President Hakainde Hichilema in a casket with Vice-President Mutale Nalumango paying her respects.

🇿🇲 BRIEFING | Hichilema Lands in Eastern Province as 15 MPs Declare 2026 Support
President Hakainde Hichilema has arrived in Eastern Province ahead of the N’cwala Traditional Ceremony, receiving a high-energy reception in Malambo and Mfuwe before proceeding to Chipata for the annual cultural event.
Speaking on his arrival, the President thanked local leaders and residents, writing, “Thank you, good people of Malambo and Mfuwe, and all Members of Parliament from Eastern Province for welcoming us as we head to Chipata for N’cwala Traditional Ceremony. Culture defines us all, and we will ensure that Zambia continues upholding its different traditions and cultures for national development. Bayete!”

The visit, while anchored in culture and tradition, has quickly taken on political significance. Fifteen out of the twenty Members of Parliament from Eastern Province have publicly endorsed President Hichilema as their preferred presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections, signaling a notable consolidation of support in a province long regarded as politically influential.
Eastern Province has historically played a strategic role in national elections, often acting as a battleground in tightly contested presidential races. The visible show of support by a majority of sitting MPs suggests an effort to anchor the ruling party’s presence in a region that has previously leaned heavily toward the Patriotic Front
Images from Mfuwe show crowds waving campaign regalia and banners bearing “HH 2026,” as traditional leaders in ceremonial attire welcomed the Head of State upon arrival.
The convergence of culture and politics at such events underscores how traditional ceremonies continue to serve as both social and strategic political platforms.
As President Hichilema proceeds to Chipata for N’cwala, attention will now turn to whether the endorsement by Eastern Province lawmakers translates into broader grassroots mobilization ahead of what is shaping up to be a high-stakes 2026 election cycle.
GOVT SAYS IT IS ENGAGED IN DIALOGUE WITH THE US ON REPORTED HEALTH FUNDING
By Nelson Zulu
Government has disclosed that engagements with the United States of America on reported negotiations of a multi-million-dollar health funding agreement are on-going contrary to media reports.
Speaking during a media briefing, Information and Media Minister Cornelius Mweetwa says at the right time, government will disclose the information relating to the negotiations.
Mr. Mweetwa, who is also Acting Health Minister says contrary to the reports, relations with the United States government are cordial and not been strained.
Recently, Zambia was reported to have withdrawn from negotiations on a multi-million-dollar health funding agreement with the United States estimated at the value of Over $1 billion, after similar reports surfaced on Zimbabwe among others.
He however warned political critics spreading false information on such sensitive matters without government position to be patriotic and involve themselves in sober politics.
All the major airlines have diverted or cancelled flights to the region, citing safety, and apologising to customers.
Virgin Atlantic said it had cancelled its VS400 service from London Heathrow to Dubai and warned that flights to the Maldives, India and Saudi Arabia might experience longer flight times due to re-routing.
British Airways has cancelled flights to Tel Aviv and Bahrain until Wednesday, and today’s service to Amman is grounded too.
The BA123 service from Heathrow to Doha, which took off on time at 8pm last night, was also ordered to turn around a third of the way into the trip. A few hours later the 200 plus passengers found themselves back on the tarmac in London.
Wizz Air confirmed that it has suspended all flights to and from Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman with immediate effect up until and including next Saturday. Flights to and from Saudi Arabia will be cancelled until Tuesday.
Emirates has temporarily suspended its operations. Lufthansa, Air India and Turkish Airlines are other carriers to have announced cancellations for the region.-BBC
Israel’s strikes against Iran have targeted senior figures, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian, and the armed forces’ chief of staff Abdolrahim Mousavi, two Israeli sources told CNN.
The structure of Iran’s regime was built following the Islamic Revolution of 1979, which swept away Iran’s monarchy and birthed a state that is part theocracy, part republic – with a handful of semi-democratic institutions swaddled by a system that is ultimately clerical.
Here’s a look at how power operates in the country:
Supreme Leader: Atop Iran’s power structure is Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The leader is the head of state, commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and has authority over the national police and morality police. He also appoints half of the 12 members of the Guardian Council; Iran’s parliament selects the other half.
Guardian Council: This 12-jurist body oversees the activities of Iran’s parliament, determining if laws passed are compatible with sharia and can demand that legislation be revised. The council also approves candidates for parliament, the presidency, and the Assembly of Experts – meaning it can block certain candidates from running for public office.
Assembly of Experts: This body of 88 jurists, directly elected by the public from a list of candidates vetted by the Guardian Council, is tasked with checking the authority of the supreme leader. But it is not clear how the assembly exercises its power: it only meets for one week a year; its meetings are secret; and it is not known to have ever challenged a supreme leader’s decisions.
President: The head of the elected government is directly answerable to the supreme leader. Eligible for a maximum of two four-year terms, the president implements policies within the framework set out by the supreme leader and spearheads Iran’s diplomacy.
Parliament: With 290 members, also elected to four-year terms, the parliament drafts legislation, ratifies treaties and approves the budget. Its sessions are open to the public and its deliberations are broadcast.
Security services: The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is an elite military unit tasked with defending the regime, comprising between 150,000 and 190,000 troops, and has an army, navy, air force and intelligence wing. The Basij – a volunteer branch of the IRGC – is responsible for enforcing Islamic morality among the public. – CNN
Just hours before the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, Oman’s foreign minister said a breakthrough in US-Iran talks had brought a peace deal “within our reach.”
“A peace deal is within our reach if we just allow diplomacy the space it needs to get there,” Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi told CBS’ Face the Nation on Friday in a rare interview, adding that the main obstacles to a deal had been overcome.
“If the ultimate objective is to ensure forever that Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb, I think we have cracked that problem through these negotiations by agreeing a very important breakthrough that has not been achieved any time before,” he said. “The single most important achievement, I believe, is the agreement that Iran will never ever have the nuclear material that will create a bomb.”
Albusaidi said Iran had agreed not to stockpile excess nuclear material that could be used to build a bomb, a concession he suggested went beyond the limits imposed under the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated during the Obama administration.
“This is something that has really been missed a lot by the media, and I want to clarify that from the standpoint of a mediator,” he said. “There would be zero accumulation, zero stockpiling and full verification… by the (UN nuclear watchdog), the IAEA.”
His comments came hours after President Donald Trump told reporters he was “not happy” with the talks, saying Iran was “not willing to give us what we have to have.”
Oman’s role: The country has served as a diplomatic backchannel between Washington and Tehran for years. It had mediated three rounds of talks between the two sides, with Albusaidi expressing optimism following the latest round on Thursday.-CNN
“To the members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, the armed forces, and all of the police, I say tonight that you must lay down your weapons and have complete immunity or, in the alternative, face certain death,” President Donald Trump said in his address, announcing a “major” operation in Iran.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), the elite wing of the Iranian military, has propped up the Iranian regime for decades. It is tasked both with combating enemies abroad and stamping out protests at home. Here’s what to know about it.
What is the IRGC and how did it start?
The IRGC exists to “guard” the theocracy. After Iran’s last monarch was deposed in 1979, various paramilitary groups that helped hasten his downfall coalesced into the IRGC. It resisted initial attempts to be incorporated into the regular army and cemented its power during its deployment in the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.
Today, it is the most powerful branch of Iran’s military, independent of the regular army. Comprising between 150,000 and 190,000 troops, it has an army, navy, air force and intelligence wing, and has also become enmeshed throughout Iran’s civilian economy.
What is the Quds Force?
The Quds Force is an expeditionary unit made up of the IRGC’s most elite fighters. It was originally tasked with foreign operations, starting with Hezbollah in Lebanon. The force has since supported several non-state actors in the Middle East, from Hamas in Gaza to the Houthis in Yemen and even the Taliban in Afghanistan during the 1990s.
What is the Basij?
The Basij – another of the IRGC’s five branches – operates like the police: visible, street-level, domestic. Meaning “mobilization” in Farsi, the Basij is a volunteer group which plucks members from across the country, often from poorer, more conservative backgrounds. It is tasked with propping up the regime at home and enforcing Islamic morality among the public.
Paris Jackson, the 27-year-old daughter of the late Michael Jackson, recently reunited with her mother, Debbie Rowe.
Paris shared intimate snapshots from their time together on Instagram Stories on Feb. 26.
In one image, Paris wore a smile while posing beside Debbie, who was also smiling.
In another snapshot, the two matched in cream colored tops.
Paris kept the caption simple, writing “Lately” with a heart emoji.
Paris’s journey with her mom has not followed a traditional script. She and her brothers, Prince Jackson, 29, and Bigi Jackson, 24, were primarily raised by their father until he di£d in 2009 at age 50. After Michael Jackson and Debbie divorced in 1999, Rowe gave up custody of the children.
For years, Debbie was not part of Paris’ day-to-day life.
In a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, Paris explained that as a child, her biological mother simply “didn’t exist” in her world. It was only later, when she began asking questions about where she came from, that she sought clarity.
Still, Paris has consistently emphasized that she never lacked love. She grew up surrounded by strong women, including her grandmother, Katherine Jackson, and her aunt Janet Jackson.
US Congresswoman, Nancy Mace has introduced legislation that would allow the federal government to impose the de@th penalty on people convicted of raping or sexually assaulting children.
The bill, titled the Death Penalty for Child Rapists Act, is intended to expand capital punishment eligibility to several federal child s£x crime statutes and to the rape of a child under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, according to the press release.
“We have zero mercy for child rapists,” Mace said in a statement. “Those who prey on our most vulnerable deserve the harshest consequences we can deliver. No predator should be allowed to walk away from the most unthinkable crimes against children.”
The proposal would amend Title 18 of the U.S. Code to authorize capital punishment for aggravated s£xual abuse of a child, sexual abuse of a minor, and abusive sexual contact involving a child. It would also apply to childrape offenses prosecuted in the military justice system.
Mace framed the legislation as part of her broader effort to increase accountability for s£xual abuse crimes, pointing to her calls for transparency surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein case and for consequences for anyone who “conspired or collaborated” with the convicted s£x trafficker.
The bill is expected to draw significant legal and political scrutiny.
The Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that imposing the death penalty for the rape of a child where the victim does not die violates the Eighth Amendment, a precedent that could complicate any attempt to expand capital punishment for such crimes. Mace did not address the ruling in her announcement.
It was not immediately clear whether the measure has support from House GOP leadership or whether companion legislation will be introduced in the Senate.
The California Supreme Court has denied review of rapper Tory Lanez’s criminal conviction, leaving intact his 10-year prison sentence for sho0ting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.
On Wednesday, Febuary 25, the California Supreme Court rejected Tory Lanez’s defense petition to review his conviction in the Megan Thee Stallion sho0ting case, according to a disposition update.
The latest ruling comes three months after the California Court of Appeals affirmed his conviction.
The case stems from his July 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion during an argument in the Hollywood Hills. Tory was found guilty in December of 2022 of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
The 33-year-old Canadian rapper-singer was sentenced to 10 years in prison in August of 2022. Despite his continued claims of innocence, Tory’s attempts to overturn the verdict and secure a new trial have failed. He is eligible for parole in August of 2029.
In a December 2025 interview with NBC News, Tory insisted that he was wrongfully convicted.
“I believe not only that I was wrongfully convicted, but the amount of new evidence that has emerged since that trial, I think, has been overwhelming,” he stated.
When asked about a message he’d want to send to Megan now, Tory expressed that he doesn’t hate her and would prefer to speak to her in person rather than through an interview.
“I think that I wouldn’t say something directly to her; I would like that moment to happen in person,” he said. “We’ve both gone through a lot. There’s this connotation that, like I share this hatred for her, but I don’t. I’m genuinely past that. I’m at a place of healing in my life. I’m at a place of taking accountability for the things that I did wrong. And when I talk about my case, I don’t want it to be taken as me coming for her because it’s not that. I’m just asking for somebody in the system to look at my case and look at the evidence and ask if this was fair.”
Tory is currently incarcerated at California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that 55 Ghanaians have been killed while fighting in Ukraine, describing the situation as “depressing and frightening.”
In a post on X on Friday, February 27, Ablakwa said the government had been informed that 272 Ghanaians were believed to have been lured into the conflict since 2022, with 55 confirmed dead and two captured as prisoners of war.
“We cannot turn a blind eye to these heartbreaking statistics. These are not just numbers, they represent human lives, the hope of many Ghanaian families and our nation,” he wrote after meeting his Ukrainian counterpart in Kyiv.
Ukraine said earlier this week that more than 1,780 citizens from 36 African countries had been identified among Russian forces. Ablakwa said Ghana’s government was “committed to tracking and dismantling all dark web illegal recruitment schemes operating within our jurisdiction,” amid growing concerns that African nationals are being deceived with promises of jobs before being deployed to the frontlines.
AFP reporters in late 2025 met prisoners of war from Kenya, Togo, Cameroon and Nigeria. Several Africans have alleged they were promised lucrative civilian employment in Russia but were instead forced to sign military contracts and sent into combat with minimal training.
In Kenya, a key figure accused of facilitating the recruitment of more than 1,000 nationals to fight for Russia was charged with human trafficking on Thursday, according to the state prosecutor.
South Africa has also reported similar cases. Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola said 15 men who were reportedly tricked into joining mercenary forces were recently repatriated, though several remain in Russia and at least two have died in the conflict.
The revelations have intensified scrutiny over alleged recruitment networks targeting African nationals amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Former Manchester United first-team coach, Benni McCarthy has revealed why the club did not sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.
Osimhen emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards after scoring 26 Serie A goals in the 2022–23 season, helping Napoli secure their first Italian league title in 33 years.
McCarthy, who worked under then-manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, said he was involved in striker recruitment discussions and believed Osimhen would have been an ideal fit for United but that the Africa Cup of Nations schedule played a key role in the club’s decision not to pursue Osimhen.
“I thought he would have fit perfectly,” McCarthy told BBC World Service’s Newsday. “He was at the top of the list.”
However, the biennial scheduling of the Africa Cup of Nations, which often takes place during the European season, became a major concern.
“If you spend £100 million on a player, you don’t want to lose him for Afcon,” McCarthy explained. “Losing your main striker for so many important matches can hurt the team. It was a big stumbling block.”
According to him, the tournament’s timing ultimately led the club to reconsider, with Osimhen’s name eventually removed from their shortlist largely due to the disruption his absence could cause.
United instead signed Danish forward Rasmus Højlund from Atalanta BC in August 2023 for £72 million.
Osimhen went on to win the African Footballer of the Year award in 2023. After leaving Napoli, he joined Galatasaray on loan in September 2024 before completing a permanent move to the Turkish side last July.
He later helped Galatasaray defeat Juventus in the UEFA Champions League playoffs.

MOVEMENT for Good Governance (Ichabaiche) leader Binwell Mpundu says a lot of traditional and church leaders advised him to join the Brian Mundubile-led Tonse Alliance.
And Mpundu claims Ichabaiche is the biggest political grouping in the country with almost one million members.
Speaking on Diamond TV recently, Mpundu said he joined the Mundubile-led Tonse faction because the UPND had become a common enemy for the opposition.
He added that it would be folly for his movement to think it would win the August elections single-handedly.
“This decision was made based on the fact that we need to unite to dislodge UPND, because the UPND have now become a common enemy among all of us who are on the opposite side. The UPND, we believe, are an enemy to our democracy. Look at how our democracy has basically been thrown into tatters?
They have become an enemy to the rule of law. Unfortunately, today it’s a kangaroo situation or the Animal Farm situation where some animals are more equal than the others. The economy also is in serious problems, people are hardly surviving. So, we looked at the next election in August as an election that you can’t go in just for numbers or to be on record that ‘I participated and I came third’. If we are to go into the election, we must win it. Now, it will be folly for us to think that we can win it alone, which is why we came into this painful decision to go into the election as an alliance,” he said.
Mpundu said many stakeholders advised him to team up with the Mundubile-led Tonse Alliance, adding that he won’t be re-contesting his Nkana seat.
“We have been listening to many stakeholders who have pointed us to this direction that we have now made. And here I’m speaking to church leaders, I’m speaking to traditional leaders and as we speak here I can tell you there is a huge number of traditional leaders who are pointing to that Tonse Alliance, there is a huge number of Church factions that are pointing to that direction, they are the ones who convinced us that this is the direction to go. So, let me say without sounding unreasonable that it looks like Honourable Brian Mundubile may actually be leading the pack around the opposition and that’s what led us into that particular alliance,” he said.
“I am now part of the bigger picture or a bigger plan, I am not going into Nkana, I have done my part. I wish that the people of Nkana can now pick a better person than me. I have done my home work, I did what I promised I would do, I think now there is a calling that I must step up and help at a bigger platform. So I will be helping galvanise support for Tonse Alliance across the , so I will be a freelancer”.
Meanwhile, Mpundu said his Ichabaiche movement was arguably the biggest political grouping in the country.
“I have been telling people that if we were to put numbers, we could arguably be the biggest political grouping at the moment because when you go into our database, those who have now managed to register with membership cards have actually exceeded 600,000. But those who have not yet, because others have struggled, in total we could be clocking about a million members, so when you look at the context of the sizes of political parties we could arguably be the biggest, save for the UPND, they would claim they are bigger because they got 2.8 million votes in the last election. But between me and you, you know that those who vote are not necessarily your members, because voting is based on the mood of that particular time,” said Mpundu.
“We’ve had serious engagement with different stakeholders. Civil society organisations, the church and traditional leaders have all called on us not to go in alone, because then we would distribute these votes among opposition members or share as they like to call it. So we came to a painful decision that we had to let go of our ambitions, me for example who wanted to be president, I had to let go of my ambitions to become president, or at least shelve that ambition to now be part of a bigger group”.
CSOS DEMAND TRANSPARENCY OVER ZAMBIA–US HEALTH AID AND MINERALS AGREEMENT
A coalition of CSOs and legal practitioners has expressed disappointment with the Zambian Government over its continued failure to disclose the contents of a Memorandum of Understanding reportedly signed between the Governments of Zambia and the United States concerning health aid.
The coalition has also raised concern over a related Bilateral Compact Agreement which is allegedly tied to access to health support in exchange for the exploitation of Zambia’s mineral resources.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition which includes Alliance for Community Action, Chapter One Foundation, LCK Chambers and TI-Z, LCK Freedom Foundation Executive Director Linda Kasonde described the Government’s silence on the matter as deeply troubling.
Ms. Kasonde says of particular concern is the Government’s refusal to issue a clear and comprehensive public statement addressing the questions surrounding the terms, conditionalities and implications of the agreements.
She states that where matters involve the health, privacy, natural resources and sovereignty of the Republic, silence is not an acceptable response.
Ms. Kasonde emphasizes that health aid should never be conditioned on arrangements that compromise Zambia’s strategic mineral assets or the rights and dignity of its citizens.
She adds that reports suggesting that access to health support may be linked to the exploitation of Zambia’s critical minerals raise significant constitutional, economic and governance concerns. According to Ms. Kasonde, such matters require transparency, public accountability and parliamentary oversight, as citizens have a constitutional right to information concerning agreements entered into on their behalf.
She further states that the management of public health systems and national resources cannot be conducted behind closed doors adding that such agreements must be subjected to public scrutiny to ensure that they serve the best interests of the Zambian people rather than narrow or external interests.
Ms Kasonde has since reiterated the coalition’s call for the immediate publication of the full texts of the Zambia–US Health Aid Memorandum of Understanding and the related Bilateral Compact Agreement, and urged Government to address the nation openly and transparently on the matter.
LUNGU’S FAMILY SHOULD WITHDRAWAL COURT MATTER SO THAT HE IS BURIED – MUTTI
SPEAKER of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti says it is late former president Edgar Lungu’s family that should withdraw the matter from court so that he is buried.
She said this in the National Assembly, Thursday, when Matero PF MP Miles Sampa asked government to withdraw the case in South Africa so that Lungu could be buried, saying it was unchristian for him to remain like that eight months after his death.
This was during debates on President Hakainde Hichilema’s speech on upholding national values and principles.
Earlier this month, Lungu’s family filed a notice of appeal, challenging the judgment of the South African High Court, Gauteng Division, which ordered the repatriation of his mortal remains for a state funeral and burial at Embassy Park.
The South African High Court earlier ordered that Lungu’s body be handed over to the Zambian authorities for a state funeral following his death on June 5, 2025.
This is in a matter in which Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha was seeking an interim court order to prevent the burial of the late president in South Africa, arguing that it was in the public interest for his remains to be repatriated.
However, during his debate, Sampa wondered when Lungu would be buried.
“When will president Edgar Lungu be buried, eight months after he died? That’s unchristian, that’s against the culture and the values. Madam Speaker, I am appealing to government, especially the Minister of Justice and the Vice-President, may they withdraw the case in the South African court so that we can bury president Edgar Lungu, so that this country can move on. May they speak to Attorney General Kabesha to withdraw and then we bury our president. He is your former president, our former president has not been buried. Let’s unite on this and ensure we bury our president,” Sampa said.
But Speaker Mutti argued that government could not withdraw a matter it did not start, as it was the Lungu family who had gone back to court.
“Honourable member for Matero, if there is anyone who can withdraw the matter, it is the appellants, the Edgar Chagwa Lungu family, who can withdraw because they are the ones who have gone to court. So how can Her Honour the Vice-President or the Minister withdraw a matter which they did not start or bring? Get your facts right. I thought the court was in your ball, being the leader on that side. Why can’t you bring the body so that it can be buried? We have all got a role to play, but you have a bigger role to play for purposes of bringing the body. So we are waiting upon you, Honourable member for Matero,” said Speaker Mutti.
Meanwhile, Sampa later alleged that his constituency had not yet received the CDF ambulance procured by government for all constituencies.
He added that the intention of CDF had always been good, but the challenge was implementation.
“Madam Speaker, the intention of the CDF has always been good, the implementation is what has been the problem. CDF has been made partisan, only in ruling constituencies is money released timely. For the opposition, we are always a year behind. And even now, CDF events have been hijacked by party cadres of the UPND. They come wearing red and they chase everybody else. For some of us, we don’t even go to those CDF events because they have been politicised.
This government has done a number of things, but there are other things that they have not done well. For instance, the ambulance that they bought for us in Matero, since eight months when they bought it for us, from where they launched it at the showgrounds, up to now it has not arrived at Matero Level One. I don’t know whether it has run out of gas, or on the way they are pushing it, or it has a knocked engine, or has no tyres. But it has still not arrived in Matero,” he said.
Sampa also wondered why the President did not hug him and some other MPs after his address to Parliament last week, questioning whether it was because he voted against Bill 7.
“On that particular speech, it was unique. On his way out, Madam Speaker, he selected some members and greeted them. He was very discriminatory. He did not hug some of us, we were waiting. Why didn’t he greet us? What criteria did he use? Was it Bill 7 criteria? He was only greeting those who voted for Bill 7,” said Sampa.
