Zambia, 4 others agree to withdraw from CITES so they can cull elephants

Zambia, 4 others agree to withdraw from CITES so they can cull elephants

By Edwin Mbulo in Livingstone

FIVE SADC nations have agreed to withdraw from CITES so as to sustainably cull elephants and sell ivory for economic and social benefits.

The nations involved are
Zambia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Botswana, and Namibia.

Zimbabwean’s President Emmerson Mnagangwa says: ‘Those who have failed to conserve their wildlife should not dictate how African countries utilise and conserve their wildlife resources.”

“I heard sometime that there was a conference in Europe where it was suggested that we should not cull our elephants. I am sure we should agree to donate 40,000 or more elephants and see if they will be able to feed them,” he told the gathering. “It is regrettable that those that finished their wildlife want to regulate us. We have a proud history of wildlife conservation, it is disheartening and unfortunate that those who are opposing our conservation philosophy have themselves failed to conserve their wildlife.”

President Mnangangwa added that through Kavango Zambezi-Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA-TFCA) wildlife population has been grown.

“We should not allow those with hidden agendas to didctate the way we manage or utilise our our own God-given resources,” President Mnangagwa said.

He said there was need for a common voice in defending KAZA’- TFCA’s conservation policies and sovereignty, adding “The region’s position at COP 20 next year should provide the position to defend KAZA-TFCA’s member states position”.

And President Hakainde Hichilema said African countries should be able to curl their wild animals in a sustainable manner for “economic and social benefits”.

President Hichilema who did not mention CITES (Convention on International Trade and Endangered Species of Wildlife Fauna and Flora) by name said the KAZA-TFCA Livingstone heads of state summit agreed on a number of things such as the KAZA Univisa and other issues suggested by ministers of tourism from the five countries.

“How is that we leave out the curling, the trading of what KAZA-TFCA is all about, and so if we can’t curl an old elephant bull that has decided only eating maize, what do we do? When we curl it do we burn it? There will trade with curling,” he said.

He however warned that irresponsible harvesting of wildlife could lead to destruction.

His Botswana counterpart Eric Keabetswe Masis, represented by his Vice-President Slumber Tsogwane on the issue of the KAZA-TFCA Univisa said: “I don’t know why we are so behind, maybe we were wrongly employed. But I promise it will be done like yesterday.”

This was in reference to tourism ministers’ call that Namibia, Angola, and Botwana should implement the no visa regime as Zambia and Zimbabwe who have done so.

Namibia’s President Nangolo Mbumba said the country had endorsed all the ministers’ recommendations to the heads of state.

And SADC executive secretary Elias Magosi expressed concern that the huge population of elephants has greatly degraded habitat and continue to damage crops and kill people.

“The story of animal-human conflict must be balanced; not just animals, there are people. The restrictive wildlife trade hinders livehood development for our people. We must all find workable solutions not just wildlife (protection),” said Magosi.

And the summit communique read out by Zambia’s tourism minister Rodney Sikumba urged member states to expedite operationalisation of the SADC CITES Engagement Strategy 2022-2026.

He said this will help defend conservation, sustainable use, and socio-economic development interests of
the region at CITES COP 20 to be held in Geneve next year.

Summit considered options available within and outside CITES including diplomatic engagement, withdrawal, reservations, arbitration, and trading with non-CITES parties to benefit from wildlife and wildlife products.

KAZA partner states were urged to fully prepare and participate at the upcoming dialogue meeting planned for August this year in Botswana, including the holding of at least two preparatory meetings to develop a regional common position for CITES COP 20.

The summit also resolved to ban exports of raw timber within KAZA region.

The summit at Avani Hotel which closed on Friday was held under the theme: “Leveraging KAZA’s natural capital and cultural heritage resources as catalysts for inclusive socio-economic development of the eco-region”

WHY I WAS AFRAID FOR JJ BANDA’S LIFE

This caption by Chilufya Tayali was posted a few hours after JJ Banda disappeared. For those who may not be aware, Chilufya Tayali is Mr. Edgar Lungu’s campaign manager, now living in the diaspora.

Mr. Chilufya Tayali, a self-proclaimed public lawyer, presents himself as a very intelligent person who sets agendas for former President Lungu. Unfortunately, Mr. Lungu does not realize the damage Tayali is causing to his reputation. At the instigation of Chilufya Tayali, people have been killed, all in the name of agenda setting. It is Tayali’s actions that led to the deaths of Nsama Nsama and Joseph Kaunda, among others.

As the saying goes, “a dead man can’t talk.” A few hours after JJ Banda’s disappearance, Chilufya Tayali posted a condolence message on his page. I know he has since deleted it, but I kept it for a reason. A dead JJ Banda would have fit well into UKA’s propaganda more than a live one. This is what Chilufya Tayali wished for. Even when JJ Banda was found alive, Tayali still had something to say: “We have heard that the government wants to charge JJ Banda for abducting himself.” As he said this, he was sweating wherever he was.

Tayali is positioned and supported to do propaganda from abroad. However, it won’t be long before Mr. Edgar Lungu realizes that Tayali’s luxurious lifestyle adds no value to Lungu’s image. It’s cheap propaganda.

UKA is using their old tactics. They are flooding their pages with various messages, hoping JJ Banda reads and uses them to respond during interrogation. They are live streaming and posting articles in the hope that JJ Banda uses their messages to respond to law enforcement officers. I use “interviewing” and “interrogating” interchangeably because JJ Banda could be a witness or a suspect.

What UKA is trying to do is tell JJ Banda what to say to the investigators. They want him to claim he never complained about being abducted. It might sound simple, and PF pages may get excited, but the most unfortunate part of this response was involving the good Samaritan—the person at whose doorstep Mr. Banda was allegedly found. The truth is, the so-called good Samaritan interviewed JJ Banda about why he was there. JJ Banda’s response to the good Samaritan was given to the police and recorded.
Perhaps this is why PF recruited junkies, thinking they could get away with crimes. However, there are very good and intelligent cops handling this investigation.

Here is the reality of the whole matter: let’s say JJ Banda denies ever being abducted.Mr. Edgar Lungu, Emmanuel Mwamba, and a thousand cadres, including JJ Banda’s sister, may be cited for giving false information to public officers, as they went to Twin Palm Police Station to report the abduction, supported by information from Hon. Benwell Mpundu, MP.

Interrogation is not child’s play. Let’s wait and see. An interrogation is not as simple as posting on Facebook, UKA. UKA is now speculating, not knowing what JJ Banda is telling authorities. He is talking to authorities because he is alive. This was my worry and the reason I feared for his life. If he had died by hanging, it would have fit well into UKA’s political propaganda.

From the behaviour of UKA’s team and examining it from criminal psychology, one can tell that they wanted the worst for JJ Banda to use it as justification for inciting revolt against the government and dividing the country. I wish and pray that the government will not misuse this golden opportunity to bring sanity among politicians. This case is bigger than the propaganda UKA and PF are circulating.

THE FORTUNE-TELLER, WITCH-DOCTOR, WHO OWNED A CHURCH – PART ONE & TWO

Clive Kalambo writes;

THE FORTUNE-TELLER, WITCH-DOCTOR, WHO OWNED A CHURCH – PART ONE & TWO

The year is 2014, an ambitious me thought my life was not stitching up and with a very strong christian background, I knew the only solution was divine intervention.

One Sunday after a sinful Saturday, I decided to visit Church in the quest to cleanse my soul, but one resolve I made was to go to a modest and not a flashy church. In no time I found myself in one around Chipata compound of Lusaka.

Interestingly, as soon as I entered, the Preacher man hinted to my surprise, about a few things only known to myself then. In their known fashion of antiques, the Papa told me to stand up and asked me why I decided to join the Police services after successfully pursuing university. I was left shocked, because he said the truth, but this coming from a man I had never met in life was astonishing.

In my mind, I had found a spiritual leader, and also his charisma was as though the man spoke directly with God.

A few Sundays followed and before I realized, I was already a deacon. With just less than a year, I was Papa’s right hand man. I escorted him to many programs, including funerals. One day, while officiating at a burial ceremony, he asked if we could remain behind, which I agreed to because we used my car that day.

After everyone had gone, the four of us who where in my car remained, that’s the Papa, and two other gentlemen from the same church. We sat in a car for almost an hour praying, because our spiritual leader had directed that we bind the spirit of death and that the graveyard was the best place to do that. I remember at some point while praying, he walked out of the car, went and slept at a nearby grave, then came back. He then started telling all of us messages from our dead relatives, surprisingly he knew them with great accuracy. He claimed God could use anyone, especially, those that had gone to the yonder worlds.

The man actually spoke my mind, revealed my plans, my career worries and ambitions, and actually predicted my career switch which came to pass just three months later.

At this point, I was convinced that I was dealing with one sent from God and like many others, I became loyal and our relationship became stronger and deep down my heart, I was convinced I had found a real church.

However, I started getting suspicious when the man repeatedly asked to be taken to the graveyard, claiming that God told him to combat death by standing at the portals of death and binding the spirits of death. I took him to about three graveyards and he would go and pray while I remained in the car. All this happened during the day, and usually on Sundays after church.

It only got more traumatizing when he asked me to take him at night. This was the most scaring moment of my life…..

Part Two

A NIGHT AT THE GRAVEYARD: A FORTUNE TELLER, WITCH-DOCTOR, WHO OWNED A CHURCH – PART TWO

It was a rainy Sunday evening in January of 2015, when my phone rang. Unexpectedly, it was of course my new found buddy – the Papa.

He asked me if they could pick me up for prayers because he hard hinted earlier that day at church that there would be midnight prayers but I indicated I might not be available because I had work the following day. I had no choice but to tag along, after all, this is a man I ran to for financial pressures and other pressing issues.

So on the call, he registered his confidence in me and that God was showing him that I was ready to be used to liberate his people. I did not hesitate to prepare, and in no time I was clad in my black trouser and shirt as instructed. In fact, he mentioned that the attire was significant for the event, and just like he gave instructions for attire during some special church event, I couldn’t suspect this one either.

At around 23hrs, I was picked in Brentwood drive, Lusaka. After the greetings, I realized that I knew no one from the car other than my Papa. This gave me drizzles down my spine, but I didn’t want to show it. So after driving for like 30 minutes the phone for one of the gentleman in the car rang, as of to give them a signal. Strangely enough, my papa never spoke to me in his usual comforting smile but then I thought he was in the spirit.

In no time we were at one of the graveyards, I quickly recognized it because I had brought him there a few weeks back.

At this point, I was thrilled and perplexed. I couldn’t even do anything. As we all came out of the car, I couldn’t move but stand and watch in fear. I couldn’t believe I was in the graveyard at midnight. The instructions where to come out of the car and follow without talking until the next instructions where given.

I watched the three gentleman walk into the graveyard till I had no sight of them. At this point I ran back to the car and locked myself up. A few minutes later, I saw beams of light from another car, at this point I lowered my body so that I couldn’t be seen in the car. To my surprise, it was one of the ladies from church and her husband. Three more cars came with people I couldn’t recognize and they all followed the same path.

After two hours or so, I saw them come out following the papa in a single file. It was as though they where robots. They walked cautiously without talking and each walked back to their car. The three gentleman came back in the car and started off without talking to me.

In no time, I was dropped home and off they went without saying anything. A few minutes later my Papa called saying I needed to follow him because I didn’t follow instructions at the graveyard and whatever happened might cause the spirits of dead people to start following me. He insisted I follow him so that he tells me how to pray about it, thrilled and scared as I was, I had no option but to go to his place with my car.

After reaching there, it was around 4 O’clock morning. I could not believe what I saw…….

It is ‘dangerous’ and ‘irresponsible’ to contest Trump’s guilty decisions – Biden

On Friday, President Joe Biden said firmly that Donald Trump was found guilty by a group of people, and he criticized Trump’s efforts to say the case against him was politically motivated. Biden called it “reckless,” “dangerous,” and “irresponsible. ”

Biden said that the result of Trump’s criminal trial shows that everyone must follow the law, no matter who they are.

He said the jury listened to evidence for five weeks before making a decision. Trump can also appeal the decision, like anyone else who is found guilty of a crime in America. The president said Trump is trying to make it seem like the case against him is only because of politics, which is not true.

“It’s not okay for someone to say the decision is unfair just because they don’t agree with it,” said Biden. He said, “We should respect the justice system and not let anyone destroy it. ”

Biden was at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Del. , remembering his son Beau who died in 2015 from brain cancer, when the jury decided on their verdicts. He didn’t say anything about the trial then. But he came back to Washington on Friday for a gathering at the White House with the Kansas City Chiefs, who won the Super Bowl. He talked to reporters about what’s happening in the Middle East and then answered questions about Trump’s situation.

Biden didn’t respond to more questions shouted at him, like what he thought about Trump blaming him, or if Trump’s name should still be on the ballot.

The president said this soon after Trump talked to reporters at his building in New York on Friday. Trump wanted to inspire his followers. He talked about being a victim and said that if it could happen to him, it could happen to anyone.

“I’m ready to do anything to protect our country and our Constitution. ” “I don’t care,” Trump said.

Biden had been trying to stay out of Trump’s legal problems and not give him more reasons to say that he’s being unfairly targeted for political reasons. However, when the trial in New York finished, Biden’s campaign started to talk about it more.

His campaign made suggestive comments about the trial to criticize Trump’s policies. Then Biden joked in a video that he heard Trump was “free on Wednesdays” when agreeing to debate him.

During the closing arguments on Tuesday, Biden’s campaign had actor Robert De Niro and two former police officers outside the Manhattan courthouse. They wanted to draw attention to the former president’s involvement in the Jan 6, 2021 US Capitol insurrection and refocus the presidential race. The campaign decided this because they thought people weren’t paying attention to their message about the election because they were too focused on the trial.

Soon after the decision on Thursday, Biden’s campaign for reelection wanted to make sure people were thinking about the options for voters in November and what would happen if Trump was president for a second time.

“A second term for Trump would bring chaos and take away American’s freedoms, causing political violence. The American people will reject this in November,” said Biden’s spokesperson, Michael Tyler.

American lawmaker pushes bill to strip Trump of Secret Service protection if he is sentenced to jail

Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., the ranking Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee, introduced the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable (DISGRACED) Former Protectees Act, a bill he says will strip former US President Trump of Secret service protection if it is passed into law.

Trump was found guilty on felony charges Thursday, raising potential challenges for the Secret Service responsible for protecting him.

Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree in New York v. Trump. The charges were related to alleged payments made ahead of the 2016 presidential election to silence pornographic performer Stormy Daniels about an alleged 2006 extramarital sexual encounter with Trump. Trump denied all charges and any affair with Daniels.

But the conviction raises the possibility the presumed 2024 Republican nominee could end up being barred. That development would raise questions, including how his Secret Service protection would adapt.

"Unfortunately, current law doesn’t anticipate how Secret Service protection would impact the felony prison sentence of a protectee — even a former President," Thompson said in a statement. "It is regrettable that it has come to this, but this previously unthought-of scenario could become our reality."

"This bill would remove the potential for conflicting lines of authority within prisons and allow judges to weigh the sentencing of individuals without having to factor in the logistical concerns of convicts with Secret Service protection,"

In a statement, the Secret Service said the outcome of the case “has no bearing on the manner in which the United States Secret Service carries out its protective mission.”

"Our security measures will proceed unchanged," Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the Secret Service, said.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams previously said the city’s Department of Corrections and the Rikers Island prison in New York are “ready” to receive Trump.

Asked if Trump would be housed by himself or with the general population, a Department of Corrections spokesman said last month, “The Department would find appropriate housing for him if he winds up in our custody.”

Even though Trump’s sentencing is in July, a series of lengthy appeals that could rise to the Supreme Court would likely follow and postpone any possible imprisonment till after the 2024 elections.

PeP STATEMENT DEMANDING FOR THE IMMEDIATE ARREST OF HON. JAY JAY BANDA’S NAMED ABDUCTORS

PeP STATEMENT DEMANDING FOR THE IMMEDIATE ARREST OF HON. JAY JAY BANDA’S NAMED ABDUCTORS

Liberty House, 2nd June 2024

1. As Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) we are alarmed to learn that Honorable Emmanuel ‘Jay Jay’ Banda named State House officials Mr. Clayson Hamasaka and Mr. Levy Ngoma, together with the ruling UPND Deputy Youth Chairman; Mr. Trevor Mwiinde, as his abductors, as revealed by his lawyer Mr. Sakwiba Sikota – State Counsel.

2. We are further alarmed that instead of arresting the named three abductors, the Zambia Police has instead decided to arrest the abducted Hon. Jay Jay Banda for an alleged offense relating to an incident that took place more than 5 years ago, and which the Courts already dealt with and disposed of. From our standpoint, the Police are trying to create a diversion from the main issue, which is the abduction of Hon. Jay Jay Banda, which in effect adds credence to Mr. Banda’s allegation that Clayson Hamasaka, Levy Ngoma and Trevor Mwiinde are the people who were involved in his abduction.

3. As Patriots for Economic Progress, we call upon the Zambia Police to stop playing silly games regarding the issue of Hon. Jay Jay Banda’s abduction. Every right-thinking Zambian is able to see through their shallow machinations. The Zambia Police has a duty and obligation to fairly enforce the law and not be an extension of the UPND party.

4. In the premises above, we demand, as we hereby do, for the immediate arrest of the persons that Hon. Jay Jay Banda named as his abductors, being the State House Communications Chief; Mr. Clayson Hamasaka, President Hakainde Hichilema’s Political Advisor; Mr. Levy Ngoma and the UPND Deputy Youth Chairman; Mr. Trevor Mwiinde. The Zambia Police should be reminded that Zambia is not a banana republic, and they should not turn it into one. We the Zambian people are sick and tired of a shallow-minded Police Service that is driven by political inclinations. We deserve better. Enough is Enough.

Independent and Public Inquiry needed in Jay Jay’s Abduction Case- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

0

Independent and Public Inquiry needed in JayJay’s Abduction Case

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

The utter deception and clear criminal conduct of the State in the Emmanuel JayJay Banda’s case has raised serious concerns and requires an independent, fair and objective inquiry, probably led by a High Court or Supreme Court Judge.

•Veteran senior and respected lawyer, Hon. Sakwiba Sikota has revealed that during interrogations that took place on Friday, 31st May 2024 at the Security Command Centre in Lusaka, Petauke Central Member of Parliament, Hon. Emmanuel JayJay Banda, revealed the names of his abductors.

• According to Hon. Sikota, Hon. Banda was discharged from Maina Soko Medical Centre and was immediately whisked away by the Police in an apparent illegal detention.

• The Police refused the emotional plea from the family or lawyer to allow JayJay to be allowed to recuperate for a few days.

• Hon. Sikota has revealed that JayJay disclosed the names of his abductors. He named two senior State House Officials and UPND Deputy National Youth Chairperson, Trevor Mwiinde as persons behind this heinous crime.

• Although Hon. Sikota has not disclosed the names of the two State House officials, State House Media Specialist, Clayson Hamasaka has immediately denied involvement… I guess it’s the case of “Imbila ya mushi, tabayasukila!”.

• Despite this credible information from the lawyer who was present during interrogations, Minister of Defence, Hon. Ambrose Lifuma has claimed that Hon. Emmanuel Banda did not name or disclose the details of his abductors- another clear deception.

• Looking at the conduct of the State in this matter where the Police forcibly abducted JayJay Banda from Medlands Medical Facility and were inhumane to literally abduct JayJay shortly after his discharge from Maina Soko, it is clear that Hon. Sakwiba Sikota is telling the Truth.

• Now the State wants to charge JayJay Banda charged with a fictitious criminal offence apparently emanating from 2019, to ensure that he is incarcerated without bond or bail.

• Further, official statements have only gone to cement the perception that the crisis is a State abduction or UPND abduction or a combination of both. Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said this was an apparent suicide with a suicide note found; “Sorry Zambians” and Ministry of Information and Media, Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana, claimed JayJay was very fine but Kawana seemed obsessed with the issue that JayJay has 3 wives, a matter he has publicly spoken about.

•The abduction of Hon. JayJay Banda is such a serious crime that it has potential to permanently discredit the Government of President Hakainde Hichilema….it should therefore be treated as important.

• Before any formal investigations or details emerged, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu claimed “Government was not involved in anyway in Hon. Banda’s abduction”! How could he determine this at such a premature stage?

• From the day JayJay Banda went missing to now, State House online rogue media, run by State House media staff, has led a dangerous, scandalous, defamatory and vilification campaign against the victim, Hon. JayJay Banda and former President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
• Further, what I witnessed on the early morning of Monday,29th May 2024, where Lusaka Police Commissioner and his team, State House team and the “C5” Anti-Robbery Unit descended on Medlands Hospital and forcibly extracted Hon. JayJay Banda, pointed to a serious matter.

•It is these malicious activities that raise serious suspicions about the extent of State House or it’s staff’s involvement in the abduction case.

• Further, the unwarranted and fierce crackdown where five senior leaders of the Opposition; FDD President Edith Nawakwi, Mfuwe MP, Hon. Maureen Mabonga, Lumezi Independent MP, Hon. Munir Zulu, Christian Democratic Party, Apostle Dr. Dan Pule, and Civil Society and Human Rights Activist, Brebner Changala, have been detained, raises matters not about the security concerns of our country, but about why the State want literal silence on the matter of the abduction of JayJay Banda, where only their deception and lies become the national narrative.

• Ms. Edith Nawakwi and Mr. Brebner Changala accused the State or it’s officials of being behind the abduction. They have been proven right with these new revelations. I hope the State will promptly release them.

• What is underway is a clear cover-up, a serious cover-up of the abduction of Hon. JayJay Banda. A cover-up is another serious criminal offence.

President Hichilema is therefore called upon to establish a formal and independent public inquiry into the criminal abduction and clear intent to harm the life of Hon. Emmanuel JayJay Banda.

The Deafening Diplomatic Silence: Western Embassies Turning A Blind Eye To Rights Violations By UPND Govt- Sensio Banda

0

THE DEAFENING DIPLOMATIC SILENCE: WESTERN EMBASSIES TURNING A BLIND EYE TO RIGHTS VIOLATIONS BY UPND GOVERNMENT.

The previous administration faced criticism from Western nations for infringements on human rights and constitutional violations, eventually leading to a change in leadership. This condemnation was driven by a commitment to democracy and the rule of law. However, the continued violations by the current government under the UPND party have not been met with the same level of scrutiny from Western embassies, prompting questions about the inconsistency in their response to rights abuses in Zambia. The lack of vocal opposition to these ongoing breaches raises concerns about why there appears to be a shift in stance.

The key to understanding this situation is found in their self-interests. It should come as no shock that Western embassies have remained quiet, for those well-versed in global diplomacy and capitalistic inclinations know that these nations prioritize their strategic and economic goals above all else. They will align with actions that benefit their objectives, even if it means overlooking human rights abuses and breaches of constitutional norms. This hushed response is driven by the desire to maintain access to our vital minerals and valuable natural resources both now and in the future.

Given the lack of action from Western powers, it is incumbent upon the Zambian people to take up the responsibility of combatting human rights violations and constitutional breaches by the UPND government. The pursuit of justice and accountability must stem from internal efforts, rather than depending on external intervention.

If the West does eventually decide to join the fight against these violations, it will likely be on their terms and according to their interests. Therefore, it is imperative that Zambia takes ownership of its democratic processes and holds its leaders accountable for their actions. Waiting for external validation or support may only delay the progress towards true democracy and respect for human rights.

The conspicuous absence of criticism from Western embassies regarding the human rights abuses perpetrated by the UPND government serves as a potent illustration of the intricate dynamics in international relations and capitalistic inclinations. Though disheartening that influential entities have refrained from denouncing these violations, it underscores the need for Zambia to assert control over its future.

The fight against human and constitutional breaches must be led by the people themselves, with a strong sense of determination and unity. Only then can true progress be made toward a society that upholds the rights and dignity of all its citizens. The onus is on Zambia to rise to the occasion and demand accountability from those in power, regardless of the geopolitical interests at play.

In the end, true democracy cannot be bestowed from abroad but must be cultivated from within. The silence of the Western embassies may be deafening, but it should serve as a rallying cry for the Zambian people to stand up for what is right and just. The fight for human rights and constitutional norms is not an easy one, but it is a battle worth fighting for the future generations to come.

ANC mulls unity government after losing majority

South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC) is increasingly talking of a government of national unity (GNU) after it lost its parliamentary majority in the 29 May election.

This is is borne out by the headline in the local Sunday Times newspaper, which reads: “Beaten ANC pushes for GNU.”

The ANC’s vote slumped to 40%, with the party losing its outright majority for the first time since 1994, when Nelson Mandela led it to a resounding victory at the end of the racist system of apartheid.

The idea of a GNU is not new.

South Africa had it after the end of apartheid in order to promote reconciliation after years of conflict.

The GNU was made up of the three big parties at the time – Mr Mandela’s ANC, FW de Klerk’s National Party (NP) and Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

But about three years later, De Klerk – South Africa’s last white president, who held the post of deputy president in the GNU – walked out of it.

This followed sharp differences with Mandela – the nation’s first black president – over the future shape of South Africa’s fledgling democracy.

De Klerk shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Mandela for negotiating the end of apartheid so his decision came as a shock at the time.

I’ve heard many people in South Africa say that a fresh attempt should be made to establish a GNU.

They say this is necessary as the ANC can no longer govern on its own, unlike when De Klerk walked out of the Mandela-led government.

South Africa’s political parties therefore need to adopt less of an adversarial or confrontational style, and adopt of a consensual style, similar to Germany where “grand coalitions” – made up of the two biggest parties – tend to survive from election to election.

Many people say this is vital to achieving stability, and tackling South Africa’s myriad problems – including crushingly high levels of unemployment, a cost-of-living crisis, and electricity and water cuts.

They feel South Africa should avoid a situation similar to Israel, where coalition governments often collapse or are held to ransom by smaller parties.

This is something that has been happening in South Africa’s big cities, where coalitions have been existing since the ANC lost its majority in local elections held a few years ago.

These often collapse as rival parties jockey for power, and make backroom deals – referred to as transactional politics here – to get lucrative posts, and contracts for their business cronies.

At a press conference, senior ANC official Fikile Mbalula said the ANC would hold talks with all parties to see where common-ground can be found, and stable government achieved.

“Let’s work together,” he said.

GOVERNMENT COMMENTS ON EMMANUEL JAY BANDA’S FRIDAY INTERROGATION

GOVERNMENT COMMENTS ON EMMANUEL JAY BANDA’S FRIDAY INTERROGATION

Lusaka, 1 June 2024 – The Acting Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Hon. Ambrose Lufuma, has issued a press statement addressing the recent developments concerning Honourable Emmanuel Jay Banda, Member of Parliament for Petauke Central.

In his statement, Minister Lufuma provided an update on Banda’s situation following his discharge from Maina Soko Medical Centre on 31st May 2024. Banda was invited to the Zambia Police Service Headquarters for an interview regarding his mysterious disappearance on 25th May 2024.

During the interview, which was conducted in the presence of his legal counsel, Mr. Sakwiba Sikota, Banda was unable to provide any information about the circumstances of his disappearance.

After the interview, Banda was escorted to the police station in connection with other ongoing investigations. He was booked for detention concerning alleged offences of attempted murder and assault that occurred in 2016 in Vumbwi, Eastern Province.

However, during the booking process, Banda developed a medical condition, necessitating his immediate readmission to Maina Soko Medical Centre, where he is currently receiving medical attention.

Minister Lufuma emphasized that Banda has not been formally charged for the alleged offences at this time and assured the public that the police are actively investigating both his disappearance and the allegations against him. He also stressed that Banda is receiving all necessary medical care and legal rights during this period.

In addition to the update on Banda, Minister Lufuma addressed the situation at Chipata Football Grounds in Mandevu Constituency, where the opposition New Heritage Party (NHP) had been advised not to hold a political rally due to security concerns.

Despite this advice, the NHP attempted to proceed with the event, prompting police intervention to maintain public order.

Minister Lufuma reported that at approximately 11:00 hours, an individual approached the football grounds to observe the situation and was confronted by a uniformed officer, leading to a misunderstanding. This incident led others to mistakenly believe their colleague had been arrested, causing them to march towards the grounds. The police promptly intervened, advising them to return to Chipata Compound, and no serious incidents were reported.

The Zambia Police Service reiterated its commitment to supporting the democratic rights of all political parties and citizens to assemble and express their views within the bounds of the law.

The Minister appealed to all political parties and their supporters to respect the law and follow proper procedures for organizing public gatherings to maintain peace and order in the community.

SAKWIBA SIKOTA LIED ABOUT JAY JAY’S INJURIES

By Shalala Oliver Sepiso

It’s good that Sakwiba Sikota’s statement, where he lied that Jay Jay Banda had physical injuries akin to those of tortured Cuthbert Ng’uni back in the 1990s during the Zero Option Plan debacle, has since been proven wrong and discounted by all well-meaning Zambians. And it’s good that the man himself has seen for himself first hand that Jay Jay has no physical injuries.

It is careless statements like this one, which can damage a country’s reputation when in fact there is nothing that happened to the honourable MP, who has been known in the past to stage some disappearing acts. Those who have seen him first hand and are not using microscopes or binoculars to try and discern the microscopic injuries, if any, have stated that the Petauke MP is hale and hearty and has no physical or apparent injuries, contract to what the former Livingstone Constituency MP stated two days ago. The observers say that the soles of his feet, another area the UKWA gang claimed may have been targeted for torture, are as smooth as a baby’s.

Of course we can’t discuss specifics and details of his internal physiology and results of tests for his vitals due privacy of medical records, but the man himself is on record as saying he wanted to go home as he was fine.

Very embarrassing for Sakwiba to have to own up this way. One can now see why lawyers like Mumba Kapumpa argue against giving interviews to discuss client/counsel privileged information. Sakwiba mobilised JJ’s sisters to paint a hazy picture for a whole one hour about what now looks like a largely imagined position to the public. One that served political than legal ends and they swallowed bait. So unfair considering he is being paid for legal services. Doesn’t seem to be an innocent mistake this one considering the glee with which he delivered the details.

So, was a whole state counsel trying to mislead the nation deliberately? Was he speaking after seeing those fake photos that were being circulated by the UKWA gang or he saw his client physically?

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE ACTING MINISTER OF HOME AFFAIRS AND INTERNAL SECURITY, HON. AMBROSE LUFUMA, MP

1

st June 2024 – Good evening, countrymen and women.

I wish to address the recent developments concerning Honourable Jay Banda. Yesterday, 31st May 2024, Honourable Banda was discharged from Maina Soko Medical Centre. Upon his discharge, he was invited to the Zambia Police Service Headquarters for an interview, during which he was accorded all the privileges befitting a witness. This included being interviewed in the presence of his legal counsel, Mr. Sakwiba Sikota.

The interview primarily focused on Honourable Banda’s disappearance on 25th May 2024. Regrettably, Honourable Banda was unable to provide the police with any information regarding the circumstances of his disappearance.

Following the completion of the interview related to his disappearance, Honourable Banda was escorted to the police station concerning other ongoing investigations. During this process, Honourable Banda was booked for detention in relation to alleged offences of attempted murder and assault that occurred in 2016 in Vumbwi of Eastern Province.

It was during his booking that Honourable Banda developed a medical condition which necessitated his immediate admission to Maina Soko Medical Centre, where he is currently receiving medical attention.

I would like to emphasize that Honourable Banda has not been formally charged for the alleged offences at this time. The police are continuing their active investigation into the matter of his disappearance as well as the aforementioned allegations.

We are committed to ensuring that due process is followed and that Honourable Banda receives all necessary medical care and legal rights during this period.

I thank you for your attention and understanding as we continue to monitor and address this situation with the seriousness it warrants.

As Acting Minister of Home Affairs and Internal security I wish to provide an update regarding the situation at Chipata Football Grounds in Mandevu Constituency, where the opposition New Heritage Party (NHP) had been advised due to security concerns not to hold a political rally today, 1st June 2024.

Despite the advice from the law enforcement, the NHP attempted to go ahead with their planned event. To uphold the rule of law and maintain public order, police personnel were deployed to the area this morning.

At approximately 11:00 hours, an individual approached the football grounds to observe the situation. This individual was confronted by one of our uniformed officers, leading to a misunderstanding.

Subsequently, other under the false impression that their colleague had been arrested began to march towards the football grounds.

The police intervened promptly, advising these individuals to return within Chipata Compound. I am pleased to report that there have been no serious incidents related to this matter thus far.

The Zambia Police Service fully supports the democratic rights of all political parties and citizens to assemble and express their views. However, these rights must be exercised within the bounds of the law. Any activities that potentially endanger public safety or disrupt societal harmony will face necessary regulatory actions.

The Zambia Police Service remains committed to ensuring public safety and upholding the law. We continue to monitor the situation closely and are prepared to take necessary action to prevent any escalation.

We appeal to all political parties and their supporters to respect the law and follow proper procedures for organizing public gatherings. Cooperation with law enforcement authorities is crucial in maintaining peace and order within our communities.

Thank you.

BITTERNESS AND VENGEANCE ONLY RESULTS IN DIVISION, FR. MUBANGA ADVISES GOVERNMENT

….says people who are vengeful and bitter end up hurting themselves

Luanshya.. Saturday, June 1, 2024

Catholic Priest Rev. Fr. Nicholas Mubanga has advised people in authority against vengeance and bitterness saying it results in division.

In his Holy Trinity Sunday homily at St. Ignatius Parish in Lusaka, Fr. Mubanga of Sacred Heart Parish in Roan, Luanshya said people who are vengeful and bitter end up hurting themselves.

The Lawyer and Advocate of the High Court of Zambia, said people are supposed to live in peace.

Fr Mubanga reminded believers to live in unity, peace and harmony like God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

He cited vengeance, bitterness, competition, and jealousy as some things that divide people.

“We are supposed to live in peace with one another as we are celebrating Trinity today. When we listen to the book of Deuteronomy, there is no need to live in confusion. When we listen to the Romans as Paul is giving them a reminder, there is no need to live in acrimony. What I have is not what you should have, what you have is not what I should have. But that should not divide us. What divides us? What confuses us? Comparisons: Please stay in your lane,” Fr. Mubanga said.

“Vengeance divides us, when are you going to let go? When are you going to calm down? People have ascended to the positions of authority but every day it is vengeance. Where is it taking you? No, I can’t keep him because the elder brother stole from me. But this one is different from that elder brother you were staying with. I was just telling people about the parable of the prodigal son, the elder brother was upset when he found a party for his brother.”

Fr. Mubanga emphasized the need to keep God’s commandment as a way of staying connected to Him.

“You don’t need to live in vengeance, you don’t need to live in anger. You end up hurting yourself and this thing divides us. I have always told people who are too moody, get back to your room and control your mood. Just learn to manage yourself. Even some of you who don’t smile please just control yourself. You go to work, you are not smiling, at your own house you are not smiling, you even come to Church you are not smiling. Where are you going to smile? Manage your bitterness. If you don’t manage your bitterness it divides us,” he added.

MWALITETA CRITICISES POLICE FOR NOT ARRESTING YOUTHS INSULTING LUNGU IMMEDIATELY

LUSAKA Province UPND Chairperson Obvious Mwaliteta has criticised police officers for not arresting youths who insulted former President Edgar Lungu at the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) on Thursday.

Mwaliteta expressed disappointment over the incident, emphasising that such behaviour from the youths is unacceptable under the UPND government.

“The police officers stationed at the DEC should have arrested the youths immediately for their disrespectful conduct towards the former Head of State,” Mwaliteta said during an interview with Kalemba.

Apologising to Lungu and the nation, Mwaliteta stressed the importance of respecting individuals regardless of political affiliations. “Aside from being a politician, Lungu is an elder and deserves respect from the youths,” he stated.

The incident occurred when Lungu accompanied his family members, wife Esther, daughter, Chiyeso and nephew Charles Phiri to the DEC headquarters in Lusaka where they were being questioned about their wealth.

The trio were eventually arrested on charges of dubiously acquiring wealth and released on bail.

However, the DEC officer examined the trio, some youths, some in UPND regalia, expressed happiness at the former first family’s summons, chanted slogans and sang a song insulting the former head of state.

“This behavior has no place in the UPND. We are very disappointed with the youths. Edgar Lungu does not deserve those insults because he is an elder,” Mwaliteta condemned.

He added that any grievances the UPND has against Lungu pertain to his governance, which should be discussed respectfully rather than through insults.

Mwaliteta criticised the police for not taking immediate action.

“The police should have acted immediately because the youths committed a crime. The President has made it clear that when you commit a crime, you are on your own. The youths had no business being there, and their behaviour was uncalled for,” he said.

Assuring the nation of the UPND government’s commitment to responsibility and discipline, Mwaliteta highlighted initiatives to engage and train youths.

“As a province, we have introduced a youth corner where youths, regardless of their constituency, can engage with Members of Parliament and the CDF committee for training opportunities. We want our youths to be financially independent,” he explained.

“We will ensure this does not happen again and will discipline our youths,” added Mwaliteta.

STATEMENT AGAINST POLITICAL VIOLENCE BY THE UKA COUNCIL OF SECRETARIES GENERAL

STATEMENT AGAINST POLITICAL VIOLENCE BY THE UKA COUNCIL OF SECRETARIES GENERAL

ZAMBIA STAND UP FOR PEACE AND RESPECTFUL DISCOURSE

Friday, 31st May, 2024

The UKA Council of Secretaries General (CSG), would like to appeal to all political leaders and the general public at large to stand together to condemn all acts of political violence and verbal abuse targeted at political leaders mainly in the opposition, including former President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

Zambia’s history is rich with peaceful transitions of power and strong democratic ideals. Let’s recommit ourselves to those values!

We, the people of Zambia, must reject all forms of political violence and verbal abuse. This includes attacks on the former President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu and his family, opposition leaders, and their supporters. Violence and insults tear our nation apart and stifle healthy political discourse.

As the UKA Council of Secretaries General, we strongly condemn all acts of political violence and verbal abuse, whether directed at the former president, opposition parties, or any citizen. These tactics have no place in a healthy democracy. We particularly urge our youths not allow themselves to be used to commit violent acts.

Disagreements are inevitable, but they should be addressed through respectful dialogue, not intimidation or threats. A strong democracy thrives on the open exchange of ideas, not the silencing of opposition and insults.

We urge all Zambians to reject violence as violence only breeds further violence. Let’s choose peace and unity. Let us practice respectful dialogue engaging with those who hold different views in a constructive manner. We need to focus on finding common ground. We are all Zambians, regardless of political affiliation. Violence divides us and hinders national progress.

As Zambians we also need to hold leaders accountable and demand that politicians lead by example, promoting civility and respect for the rule of law on both sides of the divide. Whether in the ruling party or in opposition we are ALL Zambians and have the right to live in peace, love and harmony with one another especially that we are a Christian Nation under the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob.

The Rule of Law should be upheld for everyone, regardless of political standing. We must strongly advocate for a fair justice system.

Therefore, we appeal especially to the political leaders and the Nation at large to engage in respectful dialogue, focusing on issues, not personalities. To be tolerant and respect the right of others to hold different views. And finally, to find non-violent actions to express dissent peacefully through protests, marches and at the ballot during an election.

To all political party leaders, we urge you to speak out against violence and promote respectful interaction denouncing violence and insults within your party ranks. Please desist from using the youths to carry out heinous acts of violence at your instruction. It is our responsibility as leaders to guide these young people on how to uphold our national values of peace, love and unity.

Together, let’s build a Zambia where everyone feels safe to express their opinions and participate in the political process. Let’s work towards a future where our differences are a source of strength, not division.

Therefore, we the UKA Council of Secretaries General urge everyone to:

  1. Reject calls for violence, no matter the source.
  2. Engage in respectful conversations, even with those we disagree with.
  3. Hold our leaders accountable for their words and actions.

Finally, we, the people of Zambia, must collectively reject political violence and verbal abuse. These tactics have no place in our democracy.

Together, we can build a stronger Zambia where everyone feels safe to express their opinions and participate in the democratic process.

FOR/ON BEHALF OF UKA COUNCIL OF SECRETARIES GENERAL:*

Hon Lucky Mulusa
UKA Secretary General

WE HAVE NOT YET HONESTLY RESPONDED TO THE DROUGHT AS A NATION AND I’M SCARED- SIKAILE SIKAILE

WE HAVE NOT YET HONESTLY RESPONDED TO THE DROUGHT AS A NATION AND I’M SCARED

Fellow countrymen and women,

One of the biggest problems our nation faces is the lack of adequate preparation for unforeseen circumstances. This is why the same issues keep recurring, and we end up complaining as a nation.

My fear is how we are responding to the drought as a nation. Ask yourself: if we experience another drought this year, can we survive? What will happen next year if we continue to rely on chance for rain, given that it’s always a 50/50 possibility?

Some months ago, I proposed to one of my area MPs to identify potential farmers in their constituencies and allocate part of the CDF funds to help these farmers sink commercial boreholes. I also suggested that the CDF could be used to build a large number of strategically placed dams. These measures would have enabled us to harvest water during the rains and benefit communities during critical situations.

When I shared this view with a lawmaker, the response was very cold, highlighting why our citizens seem to matter only during elections, serving to uplift politicians’ lives. This is unfair, and I believe the current government can change this narrative. We should strive to ensure that development progresses with time, and we must be prepared to adjust our policies when faced with crises.

Currently, it appears the government aims to feed everyone, which is not sustainable. Even at the family level, if the breadwinner doesn’t teach the family how to contribute financially, they will be overwhelmed by pressure and fail to meet extended family needs. The government should focus on involving citizens in finding solutions. Those of us in food production are more than willing to help and can identify where gaps exist based on our experience.

A drought’s impact can take two to three years to mitigate, even with good rainfall. Many farmers, even if it rains well, will not produce as expected because they lack capital. This should not be overlooked by the government. We need to plan ahead, especially with the phase-out of the FISP. Additionally, not all farmers rely on FISP, so the question is: how do we support these farmers?

By now, the government should have established a policy to subsidize the drilling of boreholes across the country, especially in regions affected by drought. This would allow every household to plant at least two hectares of winter maize, reducing the government’s burden of providing relief food.

Yes, the government is providing or selling affordable maize to citizens, which is commendable. But for how long can this continue? Subsidizing the sinking of boreholes and constructing dams would solve many problems and offer short- and medium-term solutions to the agriculture sector as we transition away from rain-fed farming.

At the national level, the UPND government has made tremendous strides with long-term economic plans, for which I give them credit. However, there is a lack of short- and medium-term interventions to help the economy survive and support small-scale businesses. Currently, it is extremely hard and expensive to survive as a producer of staple food. Fuel prices, for instance, disrupt everything, leading farmers to either incur huge losses or exploit consumers.

While the removal of subsidies is aimed at long-term benefits, a gradual approach would have been more appropriate, especially considering the global factors affecting us today and the reckless borrowing and mismanagement by the former administration.

Some of us can see the long-term potential of our economy, but the government must not let its citizens suffer while finding lasting solutions. With the drought challenge, a three to four-month review of fuel prices would help small and medium enterprises thrive. For instance, my maize takes 90 days to mature, and I am certain that by the time of the review, I would have harvested and assessed the future.

The government should also quickly implement policies to help farmers by working with traditional leaders to expedite the acquisition of title deeds. This would allow farmers to use these deeds to acquire commercial agriculture equipment, maximizing production. These are short-term plans that would benefit the government and help the nation survive tough situations.

The truth is, things are getting harder. Coupled with the handout culture many Zambians are used to, it is disastrous if the government doesn’t conduct a serious introspection. I believe there are many short- and medium-term measures we can integrate with long-term plans to help citizens survive because the current handout process is not sustainable.

We are talking about importing maize from other countries, but considering our country’s geographical location, we need to think outside the box. With serious investment in sectors like agriculture, we have the potential not only to meet our own maize needs but also to produce enough to sell to our neighbors. The potential is enormous, but as a nation, we have yet to tap into this opportunity seriously.

Inflation shoots up to 15%, which is 8% above the Govt target band

Zambia is currently facing a major economic crisis as inflation rates continue to soar, causing financial strain on families and businesses.

According to the latest statistics obtained by the Zambian Business Times, Annual inflation for May 2024 increased to 14.7 percent from 13.8 percent recorded in April 2024. This means that on average, prices of goods and services increased by 14.7 percent between May 2023 and May 2024. This development was mainly attributed to price movements of both food and non- food items.

The continued rise in inflation is a major concern for families who are already struggling to make ends meet.

Zambia’s current inflation at 14.8% about 15 percent is above the Government’s 6 – 8 percent target band which has been there for quite some time now but has not yielded anything.

Of the overall 14.7 percent annual inflation, the Food and Non-alcoholic beverages group contributed 9.4 percentage points, while the Non-food group accounted for 5.3 percentage points. Of the 5.3 percentage points, Transport contributed the highest at 2.0 percentage points, followed by Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels at 1.0 percentage points, Furnishings, household equipment & routine household maintenance, and Clothing & footwear at 0.8 and 0.6 percentage points, respectively. The rest of the Non-Food group accounted for the remaining 0.9 percentage points

A disaggregation of the annual inflation by province shows that annual inflation during the month under review increased for; Central (18.4 from 17.2%); Copperbelt (14.7%from 13.9%); Eastern (14.8% from13.8%) Lusaka (13.9% from 12.0%), Northern (9.2% from 9.1%); North-western (12.5% from12.2%) and Southern Provinces (16.6% from 16.2%). Annual inflation decreased for Western Province (20.1% from 22.5%) while Luapula Province remained the same at 12.9%

Of the overall 14.7 percent annual inflation, Lusaka province contributed the highest at 4.1 percentage points followed by Copperbelt which contributed 3.1 percentage points. Central and Southern Provinces contributed 1.9 and 1.7 percentage points respectively while Northwestern province had the lowest contribution of 0.4 percentage points

Meanwhile, the overall monthly inflation for May 2024 was recorded at 1.4 percent from 1.0 percent recorded in the previous month. This outturn was mainly attributed to price movements in selected food and non-food items.- Zambian Business Times

How jobless African youth troop to Russia-Ukraine war front for US$2k per month

New details continue to emerge concerning reports that Ghanaians are being lured to Russia with the promise of civilian employment only to be sent to the war front in Ukraine and left to die.

One such recruit is Daniel Minta, who, according to trusted and reliable sources within officialdom, fled from his Russian army unit after basic training and has taken shelter at the Ghanaian embassy in Moscow, where he has remained since January 2024.

Embassy officials are now working to find a solution to Minta’s plight.

While it is believed that Minta remains under contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense, questions exist around the circumstances under which Minta and other Ghanaian and African youth lured to Russia were recruited for military service instead of the civilian employment they were promised.

In March this year, social media was awash with videos of Twi-speaking armed black soldiers in Russian military fatigue, proudly proclaiming to the whole world that they were Ghanaians fighting at the war front for Russia.

Ghana is not the only country that Russia has set its sights on to exploit desperate youth to bolster its forces.

International reports indicate similar underground recruitment is taking place in Somalia, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda as well, with the promise of a monthly salary, health insurance, and a Russian passport.

In Cuba, Russia has been accused of using similar tactics.

In May, a BBC investigation revealed that Russia’s Ministry of Defense has coerced hundreds of Cuban citizens into military service and promised the fighters future Russian citizenship.

Other Cubans claimed that they were offered construction jobs in Russia only to be sent to Ukraine’s eastern front instead.

In September 2023, Cuba also uncovered a human trafficking ring aimed at recruiting fighters for Russia.

These dishonest recruitment practices shed light on Russia’s questionable activities in Ghana and Africa.

Russia may be taking advantage of poor economic conditions to exploit Ghanaians who are looking for honest work.

Russia appears to have depleted its own human resources, which have included criminals from prisons, and is now turning to Africa’s youth as its next source of expendable lives to fuel its war in Ukraine.

On May 28, 2024, the Kyiv Independent reported that Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) said it picked signals suggesting Russia has intensified recruiting mercenaries in Central Africa.

It said the recruitment was recorded in Rwanda, Burundi, the Congo, and Uganda.

The report said a specially formed unit of the Russian Ministry of Defense carries out the process.

Fighters are lured to war by a cash payment of $2,000 for signing a contract.

The Russians, according to the report, promise a monthly pay of $2,200 and medical insurance.

They also offer a Russian passport for those who agree and their family members.

The intelligence also recalled how mercenaries from Nepal, recruited by Russia, deserted the army en masse due to numerous losses and treatments.

The Ukrainian news site said, “Russia is trying to attract foreign volunteers for the war,” while referencing the National Resistance Center’s previous report that Russia has “already recruited tens of thousands of Asian and African citizens.”

Also, The Defense Post reported two days ago that the existence of African mercenaries in the Russian military has been noted since 2023 when the “Russian Africa Corps” was created to replace the Wagner Group following its leader’s death.

Consisting of over 2,000 soldiers and officers, the unit reportedly operates alongside Moscow’s regular army and Storm-Z units, the Defense Post noted.

It said many of these mercenaries served in the Wagner Group and already had experience in Syria, Libya, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

Last week, the UK Ministry of Defence said the Africa Corps was spotted fighting in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region.

This could mean that Russia is “reinforcing its war on Ukraine with resources previously assigned to Africa,” the Defence Post quoted.

According to military.africa, social media has surfaced images of captured or deceased African mercenaries, sparking debates on the extent of African participation in the war. It said that despite the official neutral stance of African nations, these mercenaries are acting independently, without any African country officially deploying troops to support either side.

The motivations for these African soldiers of fortune vary, militayr.africa noted, with some seeking financial gain or citizenship, while others may have been coerced into service.

It added that the reasons for African involvement are varied.

For instance, while some, like Gomesh Richard Ferreira, a Ukrainian soldier with Angolan roots, fight for the country they call home, others, like Jean Claude Sangwa, a student in the breakaway Luhansk region, are caught in the middle and forced to take sides. Still, others, like Kimanzi Nashon from Kenya, are motivated by the hope of financial gain.

Russia, via its news outlet Sputnik, confirmed last November, according to military.africa, that a young Nigerian “came to fight against Ukraine and took the Russian name of Vanka,” but said it is currently uncertain if “Vanka” is still alive.

About two months ago, data released by the Russian Defense Ministry said Ukraine announced that five Zimbabwean mercenaries were fighting on their side (Ukraine), with one said to have since been killed on the battlefield.

However, military.africa said security sources said the figure could be more, reaching even 10, with three of them said to be former soldiers back home in Zimbabwe.

Military.africa said a total of 249 mercenaries from 14 countries in Africa have arrived in Ukraine since the war began two years ago, with 103 having been killed.

It said Nigeria tops the list with 97, followed by Algeria with 60 and South Africa with 35. Zimbabwe and South Africa are the only countries in southern Africa with mercenaries operating in Ukraine.

Military.africa noted that official figures suggest that over 200 Africans have joined the Ukrainian forces, while estimates indicate more than a thousand have enlisted with Russia.

In 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to pro-democracy nations for support, with Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba noting that around 20,000 volunteers worldwide had expressed interest in joining the fight.

Volunteers from many African countries responded to the call.

Military.africa recalled that in Nigeria, for instance, many gathered at the Ukrainian embassy in Abuja, eager to enlist, although officials clarified that Africans were not being paid to fight and would need to cover their travel expenses to Europe.

Also, Senegal and Algeria responded by warning their citizens against participating and declaring such recruitment efforts illegal. South Africa’s stringent anti-mercenary laws further complicated the situation.

While some enlist willingly on both sides, others are either lured into it or coerced.

At the Media Center Ukraine, a briefing was held with the participation of captured mercenaries who shared their stories of how they ended up on the front lines.

“They were thrown in like cannon fodder because they weren’t trained. Some of them were deceived, meaning they were promised one thing, but in reality, it turned out to be completely different,” a representative of the Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Petro Yatsenko, said.

Friends helped pay for private jet – Kenya leader

Kenya’s President William Ruto has said that the private plane he used to fly to the US last week only cost about 10m shillings [$73,000; £60,000], following criticism that he was being extravagant.

He said “some friends” of the country offered it at that price when he had opted to use the national airline to save money.

He said there was “no way” he could have spent about $1.5m – the figure that was reported to have cost to hire the Boeing 737-700 VIP plane.

“I am not a mad man,” he said, speaking at a National Prayer Breakfast event in Nairobi on Thursday.

But the remarks have provoked more backlash, with some Kenyans online asking who the friends are.

Mr Ruto went to the US last week on a three-day official state visit – the first such trip by an African leader in more than 15 years.

While he was there, Kenya secured a number of investment deals worth billions of dollars.

After returning to the country, the president defended himself against concerns over the cost of the trip, saying the luxury jet he had used was cheaper than the national airline – without disclosing the amounts.

Criticism continued, with some questioning his statement and others saying that he should have used Kenya Airways.

On Thursday, the president explained that he was told that the cheapest plane would cost about $530,000 and he instructed his office to book Kenya Airways for himself and his entourage of about 30 people.

But when some friends heard that he was going to travel on a commercial flight, they asked him how much he was willing to pay for a hired plane, he said.

“We have built a big reputation as a country and we have built friends… I said I was not ready to pay more than [$153m]. They said bring [$73,000] we’ll give you the plane,” the president explained.

He insisted he was not going to allow misuse of taxpayers’ money. “I must lead from the front as I tell others to tighten their belt, mine must be where it begins”.

“So relax and the debate must end,” he said.

But the debate has not ended and some Kenyans online are asking whether it was appropriate to accept the offer.

“Who are those ‘friends’ giving a president a gift? He needs to disclose this,” Karani Mutonga said on X (formerly Twitter).

“If it was a gift from an external source, it comes with some geopolitical implications. No free lunch,” said Mwangi Maina.

The continued row over spending by the government has come amid concerns that the government has been using taxpayers’ money to fund extravagance – which officials have regularly denied.

Since coming to power in 2022, Mr Ruto has raised several taxes and imposed new ones, angering many Kenyans.

Man Utd’s Antony emotional after suffering quietly in ‘difficult’ season

Antony opened up about his struggles during a challenging season at Manchester United, admitting to silently enduring difficulties.

The Brazilian, who made a high-profile £85 million move from Ajax nearly two years ago, was anticipated to inject creativity and flair into United’s attack under former manager Erik ten Hag.

While he made a promising start with a debut goal against Arsenal, Antony’s form soon faltered.

Despite sporadic moments of brilliance, he has failed to consistently deliver in the Premier League, grappling with the physical demands and pace of English football.

His decline prompted ten Hag to deploy him in an unfamiliar defensive role, filling in for injured defenders like Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

However, Antony’s struggles persisted, leading to him losing his place in the starting lineup to Amad Diallo towards the end of the season, signaling a decline in his influence within the squad.

In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Antony wrote: “2023/24 was a very difficult season, for many reasons. But I suffered quietly! I took this period to reflect and seek self-knowledge. Today, at the end of another season, I can say that after everything I’ve been through, I feel much stronger and ready for the challenges.

Football gave me everything I have, thanks to it, I was able to help my family, change my life and open up a range of opportunities.

After time, the experience will give me the tools to achieve my biggest goals, which are success and to build my story in a world as challenging as the one we live in! I thank God, my family, our fans, my work colleagues and the entire Manchester United staff!! 🙏🏼@manchesterunited”.

Antony’s performance in the 2023-24 season has been disappointing, with statistics reflecting his struggle to meet expectations.

In the Premier League, he managed only one goal and one assist in 29 matches, while in the FA Cup, he scored twice in four appearances.

These numbers underscore his difficulties in making a significant impact on the field. As he looks ahead to the future, both Antony and Manchester United will hope for a resurgence in form and confidence, aiming for a more successful season ahead.

Republican lawmakers respond to Trump’s verdict with rage

Republican politicians were very angry when a jury in New York found Donald Trump guilty of falsifying business records to affect the 2016 election. They all seemed to agree that they didn’t think the trial was fair.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said it was a very bad day in American history and the charges were only because of politics. Ohio Sen JD Vance said the verdict was a disgrace to the judicial system. And Louisiana Rep Steve Scalise, the No 2 House Republican, said that the decision was a loss for Americans who believe in the important idea that justice is fair to everyone.

Shortly after the verdict was announced, Republicans who were previously not all in agreement with their chosen GOP presidential candidate, joined together to criticize the judge, the jury, and President Joe Biden without giving many details. This happened even though the conviction was on state charges in a Manhattan court. As the highest-ranking federal official in the country, Biden cannot control what happens in the New York City courtroom.

The jury decided that Trump lied about some documents to try to win the election by giving money to a porn actress who claimed she had sex with him. The Republicans reacted the same way Trump did. Trump said the trial was rigged and disgraceful and he will appeal quickly.

The anger and loud complaints were very strong, and this time, politicians didn’t hold back from criticizing judges and juries like they usually do. A single Republican, former Maryland Governor. Larry Hogan said before the decision that people should “follow the decision and the legal process. ”

“At this very divided time in our history, all leaders – no matter their party – should not make things worse with more angry arguing,” said Hogan, who is running for Senate in Maryland, before the verdict was given. “We need to remind ourselves of what has made this country great: following the laws. ”

There is no proof that the trial was fixed. However, Trump’s lawyers have raised concerns about a $15 donation that Judge Juan Manuel Merchan made to Biden in 2020 and his daughter’s job as a consultant for the Democratic party. The judge said no to Trump’s lawyers’ request to step down. He said he is sure he can be fair and neutral.

However, Republicans have focused on Trump’s criticisms of the judge and the legal process in the New York trial and three other cases in Atlanta and Washington. These cases accuse him of trying to overturn the 2020 election and illegally keeping top-secret records after his presidency. Several Republican lawmakers, including Johnson, have gone to the courthouse to show their support for him.

South Carolina Sen Lindsey Graham said that the verdict shows more about the system than the accusations. He has been a strong supporter of Trump.

Trump became the first ex-president to be found guilty of serious crimes by a court. Almost all Republican lawmakers in Congress are strongly supporting him in this year’s election.

“Great job, progressives,” announced Sen. Mike Lee from Utah. “You just made sure that Trump will win the election. ”

Republicans criticized Congress while they were on a break using social media, press releases, and appearing on television. Not only Trump’s friends but also some of his critics were upset.

Texas Senator John Cornyn, who had separated himself from the former president after the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack by Donald Trump’s supporters, said “this decision is shameful, and this trial should not have taken place. ”

“Now is the time to support @realdonaldtrump, win the White House and Senate, and make our country better,” said Cornyn, who is running to take over as Senate Republican Leader from Mitch McConnell after the November election. “The actual decision will be made on Election Day. ”

South Dakota Senator John Thune, who is the number 2 Republican in the Senate and running for leader, and has been critical of Trump, said the case was started for political reasons, and today’s decision doesn’t change that.

Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy, a member of the Republican party, voted against Trump in his second trial after the Capitol attack. He said he disagreed with the decision, but wasn’t surprised because of the way the trial was conducted.

McConnell didn’t say anything about the verdict. He and Trump haven’t been getting along, but he recently supported Trump’s campaign for 2024.

As predicted, Democrats were happy and tried to lessen the GOP criticisms of the process.

“Trump supporters are planning to criticize the jury and the court because they want to weaken our democracy and they need people to think the justice system is unfair,” wrote Sen Chris Murphy, D-Conn. “It is not. ” Donald Trump did something against the law. He was caught. He was found guilty. “That’s how the law works. “

Vybz Kartel denied bail following overturned murder conviction

Jamaican dancehall star, Vybz Kartel will reportedly remain behind bars despite his murder conviction recently being overturned.

Jamaica Supreme Court Justice Andrea Thomas on Thursday, May 30, handed down the ruling, stating that without a verdict or acquittal by the Privy Council, the murder charge against them remains in effect.

“In view of the fact that their appeal is not yet determined, they should remain in custody until their appeal is concluded… That is until a verdict of acquittal is entered or there is a decision for a retrial,” Justice Thomas said.

On Wednesday, the prosecution and defense members made arguments in Kartel’s habeas corpus case, which would have determined whether the artist would be granted bail.

Lawyers representing Kartel and two of his three co-accused filed the habeas corpus application on Monday, May 14, seeking their release due to issues the defense did not wish to disclose.

The application follows the Privy Council’s March 14 ruling that Kartel and his co-accused have their convictions overturned for the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. The Privy Council ordered that the case be returned to Jamaica’s Appeal Court to decide whether a retrial is necessary for Kartel and his co-accused, Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John.

The Privy Council’s ruling followed an appeal made in February by lawyers representing the then-convicts, who argued various grounds, including the admissibility of telecommunication evidence, allegations of jury misconduct, and pressure on the jury to reach a verdict.

Since the ruling, Kartel has remained in prison.

Shortly after, Kartel questioned the need for a retrial in a statement to Fox 5 News, saying, “I feel victorious in this very moment as the Privy Council, in their infinite wisdom, understood the assignment and remedied the situation by quashing my conviction! I am now back to being an innocent man in the eyes of the law.”

A grave injustice was done to me and my co-accused in the original trial… and my cries were heard in the land’s highest court.”

He added: “I am confident that the Court of Appeal in Jamaica will do the right thing in the name of equity, fairness, and justice and free us. Some people have expressed their concern to me that a retrial may be ordered, but to them I say (albeit with my limited knowledge of the law), ‘What is there to retry?’”

In April 2014, Kartel was sentenced to life in prison with eligibility for parole after serving 35 years. His co-accused were also handed life sentences, with Shawn Storm and Jones being eligible for parole after 25 years, and St John being eligible after 15 years.

Trump becomes first former US president to be found guilty of felony

Donald Trump was found guilty of breaking the law by a New York jury, after he tried to influence the 2016 election unfairly by making an illegal payment to a porn actor. This makes him the first former American president to be convicted of a serious crime.

Trump looked serious as the decision was read. People outside were cheering and their voices could be heard in the hallway of the courthouse’s 15th floor. It took more than nine hours for the decision to be made.

“This trial was unfair and shameful,” said Trump angrily to the reporters after he left the courtroom. “The final decision will be made by the people on November 5th. ” They know what happened, and everyone knows what happened here. = They are aware of what happened, and everyone knows what took place here.

Judge Juan Merchan will decide the punishment on July 11. This is just a few days before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The GOP leaders still strongly support him and are likely to officially choose him as their nominee at the convention.

The decision is a big legal problem for Trump and could mean he might go to jail in the city where his actions with the tabloid press helped him become famous and eventually president. As he tries to become president again in this year’s election, voters have to decide if they are okay with the way Trump acts.

Trump is likely to challenge the decision and will have a difficult situation when he goes back to campaigning because he has been found guilty. There are no scheduled campaign events right now, but he is expected to appear at Trump Tower on Friday and traveled to a fundraiser in Manhattan on Thursday. This was planned before the verdict, according to three people who know his plans but cannot speak about it publicly. Trump’s campaign raised money after the verdict. They asked for donations and said Trump was a “political prisoner. ”

The charges for faking business records can result in up to four years in prison. It’s not clear if the prosecutors want to send the person to prison, and the judge may or may not decide to do that.

Trump can still try to become president, even if he goes to jail.

Trump is being accused of three serious crimes, but the case in New York might be the only one that is finished before the November election. This makes the outcome even more important. The verdict has clear legal and historical meanings, but its impact on politics is not as clear. It might strengthen people’s existing opinions about Trump instead of changing them.

For another person running for president at a different time, having a criminal record would likely ruin their chances. But despite two impeachments, claims of sexual abuse, investigations into his connections to Russia, and trying to change the election results, Donald Trump’s political career has not been destroyed. There have also been scandalous stories about him, like when he bragged about touching women inappropriately on a recording.

Voters have known about the general accusations in the case for many years. These accusations are considered less serious than the allegations in three other cases where he is charged with harming American democracy and mishandling national security secrets.

Before the decision was made, Trump’s campaign said that whatever the jury decides, it wouldn’t change how people would vote and that the election would be determined by things like inflation.

However, the decision is expected to allow President Joe Biden and other Democrats to strengthen their arguments that Trump is not capable of being in office. The White House only made a quiet statement saying they respected the legal process. On the other hand, the decision will give the likely Republican nominee more reason to say he is unfairly treated by the legal system and that it is biased against him for political reasons.

Trump said he didn’t do anything wrong during the trial. He didn’t think the case should have been brought to court. He complained about the trial inside the courthouse and had many Republican friends supporting him. He also got in trouble for making disrespectful comments about the witnesses outside of court.

After the decision, Trump’s lawyer Todd Blanche said on TV that he doesn’t think Trump got a fair trial. He also said they will appeal because the judge didn’t step down and there was too much news about the trial before it started.

Republicans are still supporting the party leader. House Speaker Mike Johnson said it was a bad day in American history and called the case a political move, not a legal one.

The trial of the former American president, Donald Trump, was a big test for the court system because he was well-known and he constantly criticized the case and the people involved in it. The decision from the 12 jurors showed that they didn’t support Trump’s attempts to make people lose trust in the trial or to try to impress them with Republican support.

Bragg said that even though this defendant is very unusual, the trial and the verdict were reached in the same way as any other case, by looking at the evidence and the law without being influenced by fear or preference.

The trial is about Trump lying about his business records to hide a secret payment to a porn actress, Stormy Daniels, who claimed to have had an affair with him in 2006.

Michael Cohen, who used to work for Trump, paid $130,000 to keep Stormy Daniels from talking about Trump during the last part of the 2016 election. This is against the law and interferes with the election. When Cohen got his money back, the payments were written down as legal costs. The prosecutors said this was not allowed and was an attempt to hide the real reason for the transaction.

Trump’s lawyers say that the payments were for legal services and were lawful. He said it didn’t happen, and his lawyers said in court that because he’s famous, people try to get money from him by threatening to tell lies about him.

Defense lawyers also said that the hush money deals to hide bad stories about Trump were done for personal reasons like protecting his family, not for political reasons. They also tried to make people doubt Cohen, the main witness for the prosecution. He admitted to breaking the law in 2018 and they say he did it because he doesn’t like Trump and just wants attention and money.

The trial had lots of interesting testimony that went over a part of Trump’s past that we already knew about. This was when his 2016 campaign was in trouble because of a recording from “Access Hollywood. ” In the recording, Trump talked about grabbing women without asking and there were also worries about other bad stories about Trump and sex coming out that would hurt his chances of winning.

Trump did not talk in court, but the people listening heard a secret recording of him talking with Cohen about a $150,000 payment to keep a Playboy model, Karen McDougal quiet about her relationship with Trump. Trump says he did not have an affair.

Daniels said herself that she had a sexual encounter with him in a hotel room in Lake Tahoe. David Pecker, the old boss of the National Enquirer, said he tried to stop bad stories about Trump from getting out. He even had his company buy McDougal’s story to keep it secret.

Jurors also listened to Keith Davidson, the lawyer who arranged the secret money payments for Daniels and McDougal. He explained the difficult talks to make sure that both women got paid for staying quiet. But he also had to deal with tough questions from a lawyer representing Trump, who pointed out that Davidson had arranged similar secret payment deals for other well-known people.

The most important witness was Cohen. He talked for days about how he was involved in the hush money scheme and how he says Trump knew all about it.

“Make sure it’s handled,” he said, quoting Trump.

He showed the jury the clearest connection between Trump and the main accusations by describing a meeting where they planned to pay Cohen back for his legal expenses in small monthly payments.

Russia and Ukraine swap prisoners of war for the first time in three months

Ukraine and Russia traded prisoners of war on Friday. Each country sent back 75 POWs. This is the first swap of its kind in the past three months, officials said.

The Ukrainian prisoners, including four people who were not soldiers, were brought back to the northern Sumy region on buses. They shouted happily as they got off the boat and called their families to say they were back home. Some people knelt down and kissed the ground, while others covered themselves with yellow-blue flags.

They hugged each other and started crying. Many looked very thin and wore clothes that were not good.

The exchange was the fourth time this year that prisoners were swapped, and it was the 52nd time since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. The Foreign Ministry in Kyiv said that the United Arab Emirates helped to arrange the release of 150 prisoners of war.

Both sides are blaming each other for a decrease in the swaps.

Ukraine has asked Russia before to exchange all prisoners and there are weekly protests in Ukraine asking for the release of prisoners of war. A Ukrainian official named Vitalii Matviienko said that Ukraine is always prepared to coordinate exchanges at the headquarters.

Tatyana Moskalkova, who is responsible for protecting people’s rights in Russia, said that Kyiv is asking for new things without explaining what they are.

On Friday, one of the people who came back to Ukraine was Roman Onyschuk. He works in IT and he joined the Ukrainian forces as a volunteer when the Russian invasion began. He was caught in March 2022 in the Kharkiv area.

“I just want to listen to my wife and son talking. ” He said he missed his friend’s birthday three times. He was in captivity for over 800 days and did not talk to his family. He doesn’t know what city they are in now.

“It’s a bit too much to handle,” Onyschuk said.

Ukraine has received a total of 3,210 Ukrainian soldiers and civilians back since the war began, including those coming back on Friday.

Ukraine and Russia do not say how many prisoners of war there are.

Dmytro Kantypenko was taken as a prisoner on Snake Island in the Black Sea at the beginning of the war. He was one of the people who were released on Friday. He called his mother to tell her that he was back in Ukraine.

“He said he will come home soon and wiped his tears. ” He found out that his wife had gone to Lithuania with their son. The Kantypenko family is from Izium in the Kharkiv region, which was taken over by Russia.

Kantypenko said that the Russians unexpectedly woke him up in the middle of the night without saying why, and gave him only a little time to get dressed before leaving.

The UN found out that most Ukrainian prisoners of war are not getting proper medical care, they are being mistreated and even tortured. The reports also discovered a few cases of Russian soldiers being mistreated, usually when they were captured or being taken to internment sites.

The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of POWs says that at least one-third of Ukrainians who came back home had injuries, severe illnesses, or disabilities.

On Friday, 19 Ukrainian fighters came back from Snake Island, 14 people were released from Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and 10 fighters returned from Mariupol city which was taken by Russia.

Five women were released from being prisoners in Ukraine. One of them was Nataliia Manuilova, who was a cook in the Azov regiment and was held captive for over two years. The Russians grabbed her from her home in Mariupol, put a bag over her head, and tied her hands, she said.

I don’t like them. “They stole two years of my life,” she said, hugging her son on Friday. Nataliia Manuilova said, “I can’t believe how much he has grown up. ”

The prisoners traveled through little towns. Then they went to Sumy where they would go to hospitals for two weeks to get better.

Ukrainians with blue and yellow flags went out on the streets and cheered loudly for their military members returning home.

Nigeria’s First Lady supports Meghan Markle amid fashion criticism

Nigeria’s first lady, Oluremi Tinubu, expressed support for Meghan Markle following online allegations that she criticized the Duchess’ fashion selections during a recent visit to Nigeria.

Tinubu garnered attention after a video of her speech addressing challenges confronting Nigeria’s youth emerged online, with a statement emphasizing cultural norms.

“They are all beautiful girls, but they should be confident to know they are. They don’t want to be like… even they are mimicking and trying to emulate film stars from America.

“They don’t know where they come from. Why did Meghan come here looking for Africa? That is something we have to take home with. We know who we are and don’t lose who you are,” Tinubu added.

Some interpreted this as the first lady indirectly referencing Meghan, suggesting that her mention of “nakedness” criticized the duchess’ attire for the visit. Social media posts on the remarks went viral and garnered mainstream media coverage.

Yet, the first lady’s office has released a statement supporting Meghan and refuting what they view as a misleading interpretation. Newsweek reached out to representatives of Meghan Markle and Oluremi Tinubu’s office for comment via email.

“She meant Meghan appreciates the people we are and hence her coming here,” the first lady’s office told international news agency Agence France-Presse on May 30. “At no point did she say anything about Meghan’s dressing.”

The vote of confidence from the first lady’s office comes as Meghan and Prince Harry were generally well received during their three-day visit to Nigeria between May 10 and 12.

The couple were officially invited to visit the West African nation by General Christopher Musa, chief of defense staff, the country’s top-ranking military representative. Many of the events Meghan and Harry undertook during their stay were connected with Harry’s veterans sports tournament, the Invictus Games, which Nigeria participated in for the first time in 2023 and one day hopes to host.

Meghan had revealed on an episode of her Archetypes podcast that she discovered through a genealogy test that she is 43 percent Nigerian and thanked Nigerians for “welcoming me home” during her stay in the country.

The couple’s visit raised eyebrows in Britain as it closely mirrored official tours undertaken by members of the royal family on behalf of the monarchy and U.K. government. When Harry and Meghan split from the monarchy in 2020 and stepped down from their roles as working royals, they relinquished their responsibilities to undertake these tours.

The couple’s Nigeria visit, though officially invited and organized by the chief of defense staff, was made in a private capacity as philanthropists and Harry as patron and founder of the Invictus Games, not as members of the royal family.

Meghan’s wardrobe during the visit won praise from the fashion press. However, critics online said that the duchess’ bare-shouldered looks were incongruous with the modest form of dressing adopted by a large percentage of the country’s estimated 50 percent Muslim population.

Though widely considered a successful visit, Harry and Meghan’s Nigeria visit was hit with scandal when it was revealed the couple had used the commercial airline Air Peace for internal travel between the cities of Abuja and Lagos.

Allen Onyema, Air Peace chief executive and founder, is currently wanted in the U.S. on a fraud indictment from 2019.

While it is unclear whether Harry and Meghan were aware of this at the time, commentators have noted that this is a mistake that they cannot afford to repeat if they are to continue making international visits.

Berlin permits Ukraine to employ German weaponry against Russian targets

Germany and the United States agreed on Friday to let Ukraine use the long-range weapons they gave them to attack targets in Russia. This is a big change in policy because Ukrainian soldiers don’t have enough weapons and are losing the war.

Ukrainian leaders are upset because they are not allowed to use Western weapons, and they are having a hard time defending themselves against the Russian attack in Kharkiv.

Germany and the US have given permission to defend Kharkiv, which is only 20 kilometres (12 miles) away from Russia. Russian missiles hit a building in the city last night and at least four people died.

Apart from helping Ukraine protect Kharkiv better, we don’t know how lifting the restrictions will affect the course of the conflict during this important time.

The government of Germany said that Ukraine can use the weapons it gives them to fight against Russia’s attacks on Kharkiv from positions near the border. The US President said that Ukraine can use American weapons to fight back against Russian military attacks in the region.

Russia is angry about Germany’s announcement. Dmitry Medvedev from Russia’s Security Council said that Ukraine and NATO will get a strong response. This might make NATO join the conflict, which Western governments do not want.

Western leaders have not wanted to lift the rules on their weapons because they are afraid it could make Russian President Vladimir Putin angry. Putin has warned many times that if the West gets involved, it could lead to a nuclear war.

However, Russia is now winning in some parts of the 1,000-kilometer front line. Because of this, some Western leaders want to change the policy to let Kyiv attack military bases in Russia with advanced weapons from Western countries.

The Kremlin’s large and well-equipped army is taking advantage of Ukraine’s lack of soldiers and weapons after a long wait for US military aid. Western Europe doesn’t make enough military equipment, so Ukraine is not getting the things it needs quickly.

The German government said that Russia has been attacking the Kharkiv region from areas close to the Russian border.

“We believe that Ukraine has the right to protect itself from these attacks under the law of the world,” the statement said. “We can also use the weapons we have given to Ukraine according to our international legal agreements,” Berlin said, without giving details about the secret agreements with Kyiv.

Biden’s decision lets Ukraine use weapons from the US to fight back against Russian forces in the Kharkiv region.

The officials said that the US still doesn’t want Ukraine to use American weapons to attack Russia.

Should Ukraine be allowed to use weapons from the West to attack Russia. This has been a sensitive issue since Russia started its big invasion in February. The date is January 24, 2022.

NATO leader Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday that he agrees with removing the restrictions on Ukraine’s ability to use weapons from Western countries. He said this is important because it is about following the rules of the world and Ukraine’s right to protect itself.

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said that Sweden has not stopped Ukraine from using its weapons. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that Italy will not allow Ukraine to use Italian weapons outside of Ukraine.

In Moscow, Medvedev said again that the things happening could make NATO and Russia start a nuclear war. “He said it’s not trying to scare anyone or a bluff about nuclear weapons. ”

Russia’s new defense minister, Andrei Belousov, said on Friday that Russian troops are moving in all different directions, including in the Kharkiv region where they have pushed Ukrainian forces back by up to 9 kilometers (5 miles). Russian troops took control of 28 towns and villages in the last month.

Since the beginning of the year, Russian forces have taken over 880 square kilometers (340 square miles) of land.

Overnight on Friday, Russia fired five large missiles at Kharkiv, according to Ukraine’s air force. One missile hit a house at midnight and another hit the people who came to help afterwards, said Gov Oleh Syniehubov. At least 25 people got hurt, he said.

Ukrainian leaders have said that Russia attacked rescue workers by aiming missiles at homes, drawing the rescuers in and then hitting them with another missile to hurt or kill them. Russia used a strategy in Syria’s war.

Ukrainian officials say that besides Kharkiv, Moscow’s soldiers are also moving towards the Donetsk region in the south and getting ready for an attack in the Sumy region in the north.

Kenyan climber’s body to be left on Everest – family

The body of a Kenyan climber who died on Mt Everest last week will remain on the mountain where he died, his family has said.

Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui died while on a daring mission to reach the summit of Mt Everest without supplementary oxygen.

The 40-year-old mountaineer fell into a crevasse just about 48 metres (160 ft) below the 8,849-metre peak, along with his Nepali guide.

Kirui’s family said retrieving his body from such a high altitude would be too risky for the rescue team.

Climbing Everest, the world’s highest peak, is considered extremely difficult and risky, even for experienced climbers.

Kirui was trying to become the first African to climb Mt Everest without extra oxygen, accompanied by Nepali climber Nawang Sherpa.

Nawang is still missing.

In a statement on Wednesday, Kirui’s family said they had taken the “difficult” decision to let his remains rest on the mountain after wide consultations and “careful consideration of all the circumstances”.

“Retrieving his body from that high up would be risky for the rescue team, the family does not wish to endanger any life,” it said.

“Cheruiyot had a deep love for the mountains and they loved him in return. We find solace in knowing that he is resting in his happy place,” it added.

The family, however, said there will be memorial services in the capital Nairobi and in his Chepterit village, in Rift Valley region.

There have also been concerns about the cost of retrieving his body to be buried back home.

It would have cost about $190,000 (£150,000) to retrieve the body and it takes about eight people to scale up the mountain to carry out the mission.

Most families who lose their loved ones on Everest prefer to leave them there.

It is estimated that the bodies of nearly 200 of the 330 climbers who have died on the world’s highest mountain remain there.

The climb by Kirui, a banker, had been closely followed in Kenya, and fellow climbers had posted frequent updates about the attempt online.

Before his fatal climb, Kirui had told the BBC that he had undergone extensive physical preparations ahead of the challenge.

In his latest Instagram post, he had expressed confidence that he could conquer Everest without additional oxygen.

He however told the BBC that he had emergency oxygen support from Nawang and an emergency evacuation cover in case he ran into difficulties.

Most people climb Everest in April and May when weather conditions are most favourable.

Four climbers have reportedly died so far this season, which ends in a few days.

TAKE THEM TO COURT OR IMMEDIATELY RELEASE THEM

It is a well-known fact that throughout history, those who administer or control the criminal justice system hold the power with the potential for abuse and tyranny.

The statutory powers to arrest and prosecute those who commit crimes should be reasonably exercised and in good faith.

By allowing people to be unjustifiably arrested, detained in police cells for many days, and prosecuted, Mr Hakainde Hichilema is sending a very dangerous signal that the criminal justice system can be used to persecute and fix opponents of his regime.

The way Ms Edith Nawakwi, Mr Munir Zulu, Ms Maureen Mabonga, Apostle Dan Pule, Mr Brebner Changala have been arrested and detained for days raise serious concerns about Mr Hichilema’s abuse of our criminal justice system. Mr Hichilema is directly behind these arrests – he openly or publicly called for them.

But even if he wants those he doesn’t like or want to be arrested, as is the case now, can’t these arrests be conducted in a better and more fair, just and humane way? Why treat fellow human beings and national leaders like common criminals?

There’s a need to administer justice fairly, justly, and impartially. Impartial law enforcement is the corner stone of every constitutional democracy and should be guaranteed by our law enforcement agencies.

We should apply institutions to every aspect of law enforcement as a wall wired with a high-tension electricity line.

We must always remember that the only antidote to the culture of venality is the readiness of our criminal justice system to apply the laws fairly and equally.

In Freedom under the Law, Lord Denning wisely remarked, “All power corrupts. Total power corrupts absolutely. And the trouble about it is that an official who is the possessor of power often does not realise when he is abusing it.

Its influence is so insidious that he may believe that he is acting for the public good when, in truth, all he is doing is to assert his own brief authority. The Jack-in-office never realises that he is being a little tyrant.

” We should at all times uphold the rule of law, integrity of the criminal justice system, and the right to a fair trial.”

There’s no doubt that Mr Hichilema is abusing the country’s criminal justice to fix political opponents and critics. But this will backfire! Contrary to his claims, this will not unite the country and bring peace and stability. It is actually deeply dividing the country. He is actually trying to put out a fire with gasoline. What logic is this?

Look at those being arrested and where they are coming from! Can there be one section of the community, nation will all the virtues? Can there be any with all the vices? How can one explain these arrests of people almost exclusively from one section of our community, nation?

Is this Mr Hichilema’s way of uniting the country? Let him match his words with action. This hypocrisy will never work!

President Hichilema has heightened lawlessness and cadreism

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

We thought violence, cadreism and charged political atmosphere were behind us especially because of repeated public assurances from President Hakainde Hichilema.

He says his style of leadership was different and that BY-ELECTIONS will be peaceful, markets, bus stops and public areas will be safe for all.

It is no longer so.

The various crises facing the nation of famine, high cost of living, high cost of fuel and foodstuffs, corruption, high inflation and volatile exchange rate and legacy issues of poverty, diseases and unemployment were consoled by his supporters; “As long as we have Peace”.

Now that we have lost the Peace, what will they say?!

Let’s look at this;

•UPND Secretary General, Batuke Imenda called the Catholic Archbishop of Lusaka-“Zambia’s Lucifer”. No apology, no retraction, no remorse.

•Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Charles Milupi directed youths to violently deal with critics of President Hichilema. No apology, no retraction, no remorse.

•Recently UPND provincial leadership pronounced that Southern Province was a no go area for for former President,Edgar Lungu and threatened violence against Petauke Central MP, JayJay Banda and others. No apology, no retraction, no remorse.

•UPND leadership in NorthWestern Province pledged to circumcise and kill Edgar Lungu…”HH don’t k*ll Edgar Lungu, give him to us, we shall do it for you”. No apology, no retraction, no remorse.

•Yesterday, the cadres gathered at the Drug Enforcement Commission threatened to harm Edgar Lungu and sang songs showering insults against Lungu, what do you expect?

This is because the defamatory and invectives are led by President Hichilema himself who constantly threatens his predecessor and his critics with harm and destruction; “they are a click of thieves”..”they are a hegemony”…”Alebwelelapo? Where? Who will allow?..”.I will ring his neck”…”twalachaya imingalato”…”If he is snake, I’m a rancher, we k*ll snakes”!

Right now his political opponents are rotting in police cells; Hon. Munir Zulu, Mr. Brebner Changala, Apostle Dr. Dan Pule, Hon. Maureen Mabonga and Hon. Edith Nawakwi.

Pray for Zambia, Pray for Peace.

Pray that the leadership in charge of our country heed to wise counsel and not rogue advise and focus on the welfare of our people.

Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) says Six million face famine in Zambia in 2024 but 1.6million people are facing starvation right now.

REJECT VIOLENCE, REJECT INSULTS, UKA DEMANDS FROM ZAMBIANS

FOR/ON BEHALF OF UKA COUNCIL OF SECRETARIES GENERAL:

Hon Lucky Mulusa
UKA Secretary General

ELECTRICAL FAULT CAUSED FIRE ON MAMBILIMA MP,s HOUSE – FIRE DEPARTMENT

ELECTRICAL FAULT CAUSED FIRE ON MAMBILIMA MP,s HOUSE – FIRE DEPARTMENT

THE Lusaka City Council Fire department has ascertained that the cause of the fire that left properties of Mambilima Member of Parliament, Jean Chisenga in ashes last week was due to an electrical fault that arose from a possible power supply restoration.

Chisenga’s burnt house became a hot issue driving a narrative that the act was allegedly a politically inclined move such as Sean Tembo.

Tembo alleged that the fire could have been a planned move coming from Local Government and Rural development Minister, Garry Nkombo who according to him had issued some threats to the Mbambilima law maker.

Despite the political talks over the matter from Chisenga’s sympathisers, witnesses who were present during the scene, such as the care taker of the affected house narrated how the fire started.

“The fire just started from Jean’s bedroom around 14:46 hours and we were seated outside. after the fire got to the seating room, that is when I got [un]conscious because I have both Asthma and BP so for the other things, I don’t know I just found myself in hospital,” said the care taker.

Meanwhile, Chisenga’s gate man told Diamond TV that he only saw a fire coming out from the house and thought people were just burning things from the house before he realised there was actually fire on the mountain.

“I was there at my duty post at the gate then I just saw the fire and I thought that people were just burning some things but I didn’t know that it was coming from the house.”

“When we discovered with other workers that it was [coming from] the house, we rushed and got the water pipe to try and stop the fire, until our neighbors called the fire brigade,” he said.

However, despite the workers and neighbours consolidated efforts to quench the fire and calling the fire brigade, Chisenga’s household goods and parts of the house were already reduced to ashes.

Exactly a week after the sudden incident occurred, the LCC fire brigade issued a report on the findings of the matter indicating what caused the fire.

The Fire Department explained that it was due to an electrical fault that arose from a possible fire supply restoration.

They said the electrical circuit on the roof caused what is known as localised heating hence, causing the fire.

Despite the Many stories circulating on the matter Jean Chisenga has not yet spoken to the public over the fire on her property.

State allows Amos Chanda to travel for medicals but court says NO

Lusaka, (31 May 2024)– Lusaka Chief Resident Magistrate Davis Chibwili says although the State has supported the release of Amos Chanda’s passport to allow him attend medicals in India for a 2019 preexisting condition, the court won’t release the passport until a local government doctor confirms the said treatment is necessary.

State prosecutor, Martin MAYEMBE from the ACC submitted that in the interest of justice and the sanctity of Mr Chanda’s health, the State won’t object to the application.

“We have looked at the affidavits and medical records by the applicant and we have no objections to the application in the interest of justice and the very urgent need for the applicant to attend his medicals abroad,” Mr Mayembe told the court.

But Magistrate Chibwili ruled that the release of the passport was his discretion and he would adjourn the matter until he summons a local doctor of his choice to convince him that the medical reports by the specialist Indian and British doctors were genuine.

This prompted Mr Chanda to ask the Magistrate to make a decision whether he was granting the application or not so that he could seek higher interpretation in the higher courts.

The Magistrate retorted that he won’t make any decision until a local doctor tells him if it was necessary for Mr Chanda to continue his preexisting treatment abroad or switch to the court’s monitored doctors at UTH.

Mr Chanda responded that it was strange that for purposes of his case, the subordinate court seemed determined to constitute itself as a “supreme court” whose decisions are final, to the annoyance of the court which insisted that it had discretion over his passport.

Mr Chanda then rose to inform the Magistrate that he was making a new application to withdraw the application for the release of the passport because he found the reasoning of the court quite extraordinary that his doctors of six years must be substituted for those preferred by the court.

Magistrate Chibwili then appealed to Mr Chanda to reflect deeply on his application to withdraw his application because the matter at hand was a serious one because it was about his health.

Mr Chanda insisted there was no point discussing his health in court without a clear position where the court would make a decision for or against the application.

Magistrate Chibwili then ruled that the application to withdraw the application had been granted and the passport will therfore not be release to Mr Chanda.

Mr Chanda has since 2018, attended special detoxification and two other procedures in London (UK) Hydrababd (India) and Pretoria (South Africa).

Court rejects Maradona heirs’ attempt to halt auction of ’86 Golden Ball Trophy

French court has ruled that the auction of a trophy awarded to the late Diego Maradona after the 1986 World Cup can proceed as scheduled, despite objections from his heirs, their lawyer informed The Associated Press on Thursday.

Maradona’s family sought to halt the sale of the Golden Ball trophy, which he received for being the best player at the 1986 World Cup, by initiating an urgent legal action.

Lawyer Gilles Moreu told The AP the court’s ruling “was not favorable to the heirs of Diego Maradona.”

The trophy is set to be auctioned next Thursday in Paris by the Aguttes auction house.

The Golden Ball was missing for decades after it disappeared in uncertain circumstances and only recently resurfaced.

Maradona’s heirs say the trophy was stolen and claimed the current owner wasn’t entitled to sell it.

Aguttes said the trophy reappeared in 2016 among other lots that were acquired from a private collection at auction in Paris.

Moreu said the president of the Nanterre court outside Paris considered the current owner of the trophy, identified as Mr. Benchaieb, “should be considered as acting in good faith.”

Benchaieb and Aguttes asserted that when the trophy was purchased years ago, they were unaware it had been stolen.

Maradona received this prestigious award in 1986 during a ceremony at the Lido cabaret on the Champs-Élysées. The trophy later vanished, fueling various rumors about its fate.

Some speculated that it was lost during a poker game or sold to settle debts.

Others believed Maradona had stored it in a safe at a Naples bank, which was robbed by local gangsters in 1989 while he was playing in the Italian league.

Maradona’s heirs maintain that the trophy was stolen from the bank.

Moreu added he and his clients were “both surprised and saddened” by the ruling.”We intend to use all available means of recourse between now and June 6,” he said.

Maradona, who died in 2020 at age 60, captained Argentina in its 3-2 win over West Germany in the 1986 final in Mexico City.

In a quarterfinal win over England he scored the “Hand of God” goal and the “Goal of the Century.”
Aguttes said it expects the trophy “to fetch millions due to its uniqueness.”

Participants in the auction will need to make a deposit of €150,000 ($161,000) to join the bidding.

Maradona’s infamous “Hand of God” goal occurred when he punched the ball into England’s net.

Shortly after, he scored another legendary goal by dribbling through England’s midfield and defense, bypassing goalkeeper Peter Shilton. FIFA later recognized this as the greatest goal in World Cup history.

Calls intensify for Biden to permit US arms for strikes on Russian territory

There is mounting pressure on US President Joe Biden to authorize Ukraine to utilize weapons provided by Western nations to target Russian territory.

Several allies of the US have signaled their openness to this possibility after months of concerns about escalating tensions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued warnings of “serious consequences,” particularly for what he termed “small countries” in Europe.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, currently attending a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Prague, stated that Washington’s stance on the matter would “adapt and adjust” based on changing battlefield conditions.

Meanwhile, White House national security spokesman John Kirby emphasized that while US support for Kyiv has evolved, there have been no changes to existing policies.

Ukraine continues to grapple with countering a Russian offensive in its eastern regions, with Kharkiv enduring weeks of deadly attacks often launched from Russian military outposts near the Ukrainian border.

Earlier this week, French President Emmanuel Macron made more direct comments, suggesting that Ukraine should be permitted to use weapons supplied by Western nations against military targets in Russian territory, albeit strictly avoiding civilian sites.

Mr Macron has for some time advocated for more direct intervention in the Ukraine war – but other Western leaders also appear to be softening to the idea.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has remained cautious in public but a spokesman in Berlin said that “defensive action is not limited to one’s own territory, but also includes the territory of the aggressor”.

Last week, Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg told the Economist that the West should allow Ukraine to defend itself by striking military bases in Russia. “Ukraine has the right to defend themselves. And that includes striking targets on Russian territory,” he said.

UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron said earlier this month that it was up to Ukraine to decide how to use British weapons, while this week the Polish Deputy Defence Minister said that Ukrainians could use Polish weapons “as they see fit”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously said it was “unfair” for Western countries to impose limits on the use of their weapons, while acknowledging that Ukraine could not risk the support of its partners.

Russia has reacted angrily to the prospect of Western weapons being used against targets on Russian territory.

“In Europe, especially in small countries, they should be aware of what they are playing with,” Vladimir Putin said, noting that many European countries had “small territory” and a “dense population”.

The Russian leader added that responsibility for any strikes inside his country’s territory would lie with Western arms suppliers, even if Ukraine’s forces carried out the strikes.

Some Nato countries remain nervous about the prospect. On Thursday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she did not think it necessary to hit Russian military bases and urged the West to supply more air defences to Ukraine instead.

However, it is thought Ukraine has already used some Western-supplied weapons for attacks on Russian territory, although it has done so without fanfare.

Latvia’s foreign minister, Baiba Braze, told Ukrainian media that some countries had already provided weapons “without conditions” to Ukraine but that “not everything” was said aloud.

Other countries have been more forthcoming in giving Ukraine permission to use their weapons inside Russia.
The US has already supplied Ukraine with thousands of defensive weapons, tanks and air defence systems.

Since April, it has also sent Ukraine the longest-range version of ATACMS missiles, which can travel up to 190 miles (300km).
Until now, Ukraine has been using drones to attack targets ever further into Russian territory.

Earlier this week it was reported that Ukrainian drones had managed to hit an early-warning radar near the city of Orsk, around 1,500km (932 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA, PLEASE LISTEN TO THE CRY OF THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE

By Daimone Siulapwa
President Hakainde Hichilema must show greater empathy towards the struggles of the Zambian people.

His recent remarks, describing Zambians as “too lazy” and accusing them of “talking too much,” are not only insensitive but also dismissive of the genuine hardships they face under his administration.

It is imperative for the president to recognize that these grievances reflect his leadership and his capacity to govern effectively.

Instead of chastising the populace, President Hichilema should listen attentively to their concerns.

The complaints of Zambians are not mere noise; they are the voices of a nation grappling with severe economic challenges.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), the backbone of our economy, are on the brink of collapse due to a crippling power crisis that limits electricity supply to a mere three working hours a day.

This dire situation is pushing more citizens into unemployment and deepening the economic despair.

The cost of living has skyrocketed. Commodity prices have surged tenfold, driven by increases in fuel prices and other contributing factors.

The kwacha is in freefall, and the economy is parched due to a severe reduction in money circulation.

This economic turmoil is not just a financial issue; it is fast becoming a political crisis.

When people cannot afford basic necessities, their frustration inevitably turns towards those in power.

Adding to the economic woes is the growing threat of tribal tensions, which are escalating at an alarming rate.

This rising menace threatens to tear the social fabric of our nation apart.

President Hichilema must take bold and decisive steps to address these tensions before they reach a boiling point.

It is essential for the president to change his approach. He must stop dismissing the concerns of Zambians and start addressing them with the urgency and empathy they deserve.

The health of our nation depends on his ability to govern with sensitivity and responsiveness.

Zambians need a leader who listens, understands, and acts—not one who belittles their struggles.

The president’s rhetoric should unite the country and foster a sense of shared purpose, not deepen the divide and sow further discord.

The reality on the ground is harsh, and it demands a leader who is in touch with the plight of the people.

President Hichilema must rise to this challenge, acknowledging the true state of the nation and work tirelessly to alleviate the burdens of his fellow citizens.

The time for empty words and harsh criticism is over. Now is the time for action, empathy, and leadership that truly reflects the will and the needs of the Zambian people.

Dear Ba Thomas Sipalo, Komboni President,

0

Dear Ba Thomas Sipalo, Komboni President,

This is my response to your premature political question: “Since the formation of UPND, which other constituency, ward, or council chairmanship in Southern Province has been won by any other political party apart from Livingstone Central?”

Don’t be misled by those old and confused folks, young man. Honestly, how did you expect a party like PF to win a ward there with all the insults they kept showering on the region? Secondly, how did Southern Province give MMD under Chiluba a 90 percent vote in the 1991 election? Do you research or you are depending on fake data from ba Danny Pule? Do you know what this history translates into if there were MMD MPs and councillors who decided to stand on the MMD ticket in 1991? Instead of being lied to by adults who are busy spreading hatred, respect the locals across the country, sell your manifestos as UKA, and you will see them vote for you.

Hakainde Hichilema received zero votes in the Northern and Eastern regions for many years until 2015. The problem wasn’t the people in those regions; it was Hichilema and the UPND not reaching out to sell their manifesto to convince the locals. When they realized this gap, things changed in 2016 and 2021, and the rest is history.

Don’t call people names before engaging them. With the attitude you have now, prepare to get zero votes for UKA in those regions if you don’t change. It’s common sense. You can’t expect people to vote for you when your team is busy insulting them and not campaigning with diplomacy. Today, the entire senior Council of UKA is in cells for inciting hate speech. Who would vote for such individuals in their light thinking mind?

Do you remember how much time former President Edgar Lungu spent in the Southern Province during campaigns? If you recall this, you’ll understand that the PF dug their own ditch by failing to engage respectfully and effectively with the people.

You also claimed earlier this morning that UKA is not a political organization. Mr. Man, what is the definition of a political organization? Please don’t fall into the trap of those who have nothing to offer the good people of Zambia.

The country is going through a lot of economic stress, and this should be our number one goal as citizens. Provide checks and balances to the government with your alternative solutions, and not these baseless questions you are asking on behalf of some confused UKA seniors.

Zambians have woken up. If you are in politics with the primitive mindset that you can win their hearts with propaganda and baseless ideological beliefs, they will never vote for you, ba UKA. Tell us what your manifestos are and we will support you. For example, we are centred on farming, but we had a PF regime under ba mudaala ba Lungu with their CADRES insulting us for specializing in livestock and treated us like we are primitive citizens, do you think we are that stupid to have continued supporting such a party that had no regard to our livelihood and source of income? I fact they never cared about livestock matters like theft cases.

We know the PF’s manifesto of more money, more jobs, and lower taxes, which they lamentably failed to fulfill in their ten-year mandate.

This is brotherly advice to you, Mr. Man.

Yours sincerely,

SIKAILE C SIKAILE

HICHILEMA’S WAY OF GOVERNING WILL BACKFIRE ON HIM – M’MEMBE

HICHILEMA’S WAY OF GOVERNING WILL BACKFIRE ON HIM – M’MEMBE

…as he advises him to exercise power with restraint, saying ‘brutes’ have never achieved anything

Lusaka— Thursday, May 30th, 2024

Socialist Party Zambia President Dr Fred M’membe has advised President Hakainde Hichilema to exercise restraint when dealing with political opponents using state police.

Dr. M’membe says Mr. Hichilema’s way of governance will backfire on him as police have demonstrated cruelty and brutality on those perceived to be Mr. Hichilema’s political opponents.

He further warned against Mr. Hichilema’s administration brutal tactics saying they would never take Mr. Hichilema anywhere.

“Clearly, this brutality will not take him anywhere. This cruelty, this brutality will not take him anywhere. Brutes have never achieved anything. Brutality has never been a key to progressive governance. The ending of this approach will be disastrous.” He said .

Dr. M’membe advised President Hichilema to exercise power with restraint, reminding his administration of the humanity of those detained.

Dr. M’membe expressed strong condemnation after being denied access to visit detained political leaders Apostle Danny Pule,Ms. Edith Nawakwi, Members of Parliament Hon. Munir Zulu, Mfuwe MP Maureen Mabonga, and civil rights activist Brebner Changala on thursday.

“We advise that he exercises power with restraint. They are dealing with human beings. Whether these human beings have wronged them, they are still human beings. Police should not be used for political resolution or differences. It is bound to backfire.” He said.

Dr. M’membe emphasized the fundamental right of visitation saying political detainees were not convicts.

“Even the worst criminals are allowed visitations from their friends, from their relatives, from their pastors, from their traditional leaders. These people who are still here are innocent. They are not convicts. None of them is a convict. Even convicts are visited. They are human beings.” He said.

Dr. M’membe questioned the direction in which the country was headed, expressing disbelief over the current administration’s handling of political detainees.

“I can’t understand where this country is headed. The way Mr. Hakainde Hichilema is running things will backfire on him. He can’t understand. He can’t say that he’s not involved. He made statements about race. He made statements that it’s two years, eight months now. He will be more harsh.” He lamented.

The Socialist Party President’s remarks underscore a growing concern about the current political climate and the treatment of government’s political detainees in Zambia.

2024 South Africa Elections: Early results show ANC leading

Early results have been announced from what is seen as South Africa’s most closely fought elections since the African National Congress (ANC) came to power 30 years ago.

With results from around 27% voting districts counted so far, the ANC is leading with 43%, followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) with 25%.

AFP Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) officials empty a ballot box during the vote counting process at the Norwood school voting station in Durban on May 29, 2024, during South Africa’s general election

The radical Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has about 9%, while the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) of former President Jacob Zuma is on around 8%.

Final results are expected over the weekend.

The initial results suggest the ANC will lose its parliamentary majority for the first time since Nelson Mandela led the party to victory following the end of the racist system of apartheid in 1994.

Many voters blame the ANC for the high levels of corruption, crime and unemployment in the country.

The respected Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the News24 website have projected that the party’s final vote could be around 42%, a big drop from the 57% it obtained in the 2019 election.

This would force it go into a coalition with one or more of the other parties in order to form a majority in parliament.

The DA has liberal economic policies, while both the EFF and MK favour more state intervention and nationalisation, so the choice of partner would make a huge difference to South Africa’s future direction.

It is unclear whether President Cyril Ramaphosa will remain in power, as he could come under pressure from the ANC to resign if the party gets less than 45% of the final vote, said Prof William Gumede, chairman of the non-profit Democracy Works Foundation.

“The ANC could turn him into a scapegoat, and a faction within the party could push for him to be replaced by his deputy, Paul Mashatile. The EFF and MK are also likely to demand his resignation before agreeing to any coalition with the ANC,” Prof Gumede told the BBC.

South Africans do not directly vote for a president. Instead they vote for members of parliament who will then go on to elect the president.

Ex President Edgar Lungu´s wife, family members arrested

Ex President Edgar Lungu´s wife, family members arrested

…released on bond

Smart Eagles-30th May 2024

Mrs Esther Lungu, the wife of the sixth President of Zambia Edgar Lungu has been arrested for money laundering and being found in possession of property believed to be proceeds of crime, the former President has confirmed.

The arrest has been effected by the country´s Drug Enforcement Commission, a wing of law enforcement that probes high crimes such as money laundering and drugs in Zambia.

“My dear wife Mrs Esther Lungu, my daughter Chiyesu and my other relative ba Charles Phiri have today been arrested by DEC,” president Lungu said, “they have all been released on bond.”

The former President said Mrs Lungu and the rest of the family are ready to challenge the charges in the courts of laws because as far as he is concerned, “this is a political persecution we will challenge it in court.”

H.E Lungu has been at the DEC headquarters with his wife since 8 am in the morning and the process of charging and arresting only concluded about 17:30 hrs in the evening on Thursday.

This is the highest profile arrest in Zambia in decades under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema who has had a frosty relationship with his predecessor since the elections of August 2021.

Three days ago, Mr Hichilema made a public announcement that he would start ´cracking the whip´ in order to show that he is a tough President.

A day later, president Lungu´s family received orders to report to DEC to answer unspecified charges that have led to today’s arrest.
“We are resolved to continue fighting for the freedoms this country was founded on and no amount of police intimidation shall cow us,” said Dr. Lungu.

The other family member missing on the arrest list is Ms Tasila Lungu, a lawmaker in the Zambian parliament currently abroad but faces arrest on similar charges on return.

Meanwhile prominent Lusaka Lawyer Makebi Zulu who represented the family expressed dismay that DEC ignored a statement from the former First Lady who told them during questioning that the property she is being accused of illegally possessing was funded by her husband.

“The former First Lady Mrs Lungu told DEC that the apartments she is being accused of illegally possessing through alleged proceeds of crime were built by her husband,” said counsel Zulu.
“This is not an investigation as you can clearly see it is a witch-hunt,” said Mr Zulu.

The senior counsel said, “the reason DEC did not even bother to ask the former President whether the wife’s claims were true or not since he was present throughout the questioning is because they were acting on orders.”
