USA WILL NO LONGER FUND CORRUPT GOVTS – US Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales

US WILL NO LONGER FUND CORRUPT GOVTS – GONZALES

US Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales says his government will now only fund nations that are taking steps to fight corruption and grow their economies.

He says the US approach to foreign assistance had previously failed to spur development, and had instead enabled and perpetuated dependence and corruption by leaders in recipient countries.

Further, Ambassador Gonzales says the US government is not like China, as its engagements with nations are sincere and without hidden agendas or anything that comes at the partner’s expense.

In an article titled ‘Breaking the Cycle of Foreign Assistance Enabling Corruption’, posted on the US Department of State website, Ambassador Gonzales stated that, too often, what was needed for economic growth and development was not more money, but sound reforms.

“While the hundreds of billions of dollars in U.S. foreign assistance spent over the years have dramatically improved many people’s lives and livelihoods around the world, too often the United States’ approach to foreign assistance failed to advance U.S. interests, failed to spur systematic development, and enabled and perpetuated dependence and corruption by leaders in recipient countries.

Since 1991, the United States has provided more than $200 billion in foreign assistance to Africa, yet the African Union reports that African countries lose an estimated $88 billion each year through tax evasion, money laundering, and corruption. Too often, what is needed for economic growth and development is not more money, but sound reforms that incentivise enduring private investment and growth,” he stated.

“Instead of insisting on mutual accountability to use U.S. assistance to address the causes of poverty and underdevelopment, too often we funded outputs to allay the symptoms. In so doing, we failed both the American taxpayer and the citizens of developing countries who looked to their governments and ours to help create the conditions to realise a better future”.

He stated that in the past, the US government did not have a consistent policy as to whether its assistance was charity or a foreign policy tool.

Ambassador Gonzales added that this lack of clarity had helped to perpetuate corruption and bad governance.

“For decades, the United States did not have a consistent policy as to even whether assistance was charity or a foreign policy tool. We did not require a committed partner, a coherent business plan, equity collateral at risk, or funding subject to performance-based disbursements.

We infantilised recipient governments instead of having candid discussions on mutual performance expectations. Too often our approach to developing countries – frequently perpetuated by the excuses of those same governments – reflected the soft bigotry of low expectations.

We excused away the lack of political will as ‘capacity constraints’, dismissed it with ‘we shouldn’t expect too much’, and did not challenge them when governments acted in contrast to their professed commitments,” Ambassador Gonzales stated.

“Too often, we were content to confuse governments’ commitments for actions. We misinterpreted our access to leaders as influence with those leaders. We mischaracterised aid projects’ outputs as outcomes and program objectives as results. We misconstrued governments’ permission for us to expend aid as evidence that they shared a commitment to advance professed objectives.

Perhaps worst, we failed to acknowledge when leaders of aid recipient countries demonstrated over and over through their actions that they prioritised their personal interests over, and at the expense of, the interests of their own country and citizens. Virtually never did we withhold assistance funds because host governments failed to deliver on their commitments, instead we responded by providing even more aid ‘because they have needs’.

By trying to save people from bearing the brunt of the bad governance and corruption of their leaders, we helped perpetuate that very same corruption and bad governance. Quite simply, we violated the central maxim of international development: the donor cannot want development more than the recipient. By doing so, we fuelled moral hazard”.

Ambassador Gonzales stressed that American foreign assistance was not charity but a tool to advance the country’s diplomacy, security and prosperity.

“American foreign assistance is not charity but a tool to advance American diplomacy, security, and prosperity. To accomplish these goals, we must focus our assistance and insist on administering it with host-government buy-in and mutual accountability for outcomes. This, in turn, will leave space for market driven growth that will also help close off the means by which malign international actors exploit developing economies and workers.

We should not be dissuaded by detractors who will attempt to vilify a more transactional approach as ‘neocolonialism’. Quite the opposite is true. By insisting on systematic reforms that spur transparent and accountable growth and allow governments to retain funds to support their people, the United States can do more to catalyse actual economic development and the upliftment of developing countries’ societies – and advance tangible U.S. interests – better than we have in recent decades. It is the dependency-oriented, NGO-driven old model of development that is fundamentally colonial in mindset – refusing to respect development nation sovereignty, determinism, or agency,” he stated.

Ambassador Gonzales stated that the US government will now favour nations that are taking steps to fight corruption and grow their economies.

“Operationalising this approach involves adopting investment-oriented goals, requirements, and incentives: A Serious Host Nation: Secretary Rubio has been clear, ‘Americans should not fund failed governments in faraway lands…we will favour those nations that have demonstrated both the ability and the willingness to help themselves’.

If a government is not already taking steps to stem corruption and grow the economy when its own funds are at stake, we should have no expectation that they will be better stewards of U.S. funds. Without an aligned host-government, we should focus our resources elsewhere,” he stated.

“The Right Focus: Our purpose is not to give money away, but to catalyse systemic reforms that enable sustainable growth and opportunities for the U.S. and recipient country. Neither governments nor donors create growth; instead,

our roles are to foster conditions for the private sector to invest, create jobs, spur growth, and pay taxes to fund public services. Hence, U.S. foreign assistance should focus on curbing corruption and overcoming and remediating binding constraints to growth to lay the foundation for a transparent, level, and accountable business enabling environment”.

The US envoy added that it was important for his government and the recipient government to craft a bespoke package.

“The Right Resources: Again, our purpose is not to give assistance away, and the history of both corruption and assistance has shown that money is not what is most lacking to spur development.

So, building on an analysis of binding constraints to growth and a business plan that we have confidence in, it is incumbent on the United States and the recipient government to craft a bespoke package of technical assistance interventions to inform and enable the reforms needed.

This should not be an approach of letting a thousand flowers bloom, and it must not be built around the question of ‘how can we help?’ Instead, we must start with the questions ‘what are the outcomes we want to achieve in the American interest and what needs to happen to realise them?’ and build an assistance program around that,” he added.

“Performance-Based Funding: Too often, once development projects were approved, donors’ focus turned inward to implementation, achieving outputs, and keeping funds flowing even if receiving governments actively undermined them.

Gradually, funding agencies have begun shifting to performance-based disbursements. By requiring a host government to demonstrate – through its actions, not merely its rhetoric – that it remains politically and financially committed to achieve professed objectives, we ensure that U.S. assistance achieves greater  and courage to acknowledge our mistakes, to embrace candid lessons learned, and to do better.

America’s generosity in doing business with those who help themselves remains as strong as ever. We are not turning away from less developed nations, instead now is the time to lean in to lend a useful hand to those who are sincere and treat them as mature stakeholders. In engaging valued, sincere nations, nothing should be imposed, hidden, given as ultimatums, or come at the partner’s expense; we are not China.

Foreign assistance that delivers for the American people and our partners must be founded on sincere, voluntary, and transparent engagement. But it must be backed by tangible action and, if a recipient nation proves through their actions that they are not committed to our professed shared objectives, our allegiance must first be to the American people to be stewards of their resources,” stated Ambassador Gonzales.

“Having dedicated my life and career to Africa and the developing world, I am invigorated by the massive potential these nations possess, and I have witnessed how the United States can help turn that potential into a reality that benefits both nations.

By restructuring our approach to foreign assistance and engaging developing countries based on national interest, we can help curb the corruption that deprives families of the hope of that better future. We can deliver lasting and systematic growth alongside recipient countries. And, we can deliver tangible value for the American people through a more secure and prosperous world”.

GLOBAL INVESTORS VISIT ZAMBIA AS CONFIDENCE GROWS POST-DEBT RESTRUCTURING

GLOBAL INVESTORS VISIT ZAMBIA AS CONFIDENCE GROWS POST-DEBT RESTRUCTURING

President Hakainde Hichilema says Zambia is witnessing renewed global investor confidence following the successful completion of its 36-month debt restructuring programme.

Earlier today, the Head of State hosted a high-level delegation of global investors led by JP Morgan and Chase, accompanied by representatives from leading financial institutions based in London, Geneva, Boston, Dubai, Luxembourg and the United States.

President Hichilema explained that the visit comes at a time when the country’s economy is entering a growth phase, adding that the investors are expected to engage with public, private and multilateral partners to explore opportunities in priority sectors.

He noted that the areas of interest include energy, mining, agriculture, infrastructure and financial services, which he described as key pillars of Zambia’s national development strategy.

The President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a stable and predictable investment climate, stating that Zambia remains focused on reforms that encourage joint ventures and public-private partnerships.

He said these efforts are aimed at ensuring investments translate into real and lasting benefits for citizens.

President Hichilema said the presence of the delegation was a strong signal that Zambia is once again open for business and attracting serious global capital and emphasized that the government would continue to pursue policies that create “a competitive investment environment that delivers tangible benefits to the Zambian people.”

ZAM ENDS ‘BEGGING BOWL’ CULTURE AT MUSICIANS FUNERALS

ZAM ENDS ‘BEGGING BOWL’ CULTURE AT MUSICIANS FUNERALS

Details in the statement…..

The National Executive Committee of the Zambia Association of Musicians – ZAM is hereby announcing a significant transformation in the Association’s welfare policy. Effective immediately, ZAM is transitioning from a traditional, reactive contribution model to a proactive, insurance-backed social protection framework.

1. Cessation of “Begging Bowl” Contributions.

In line with our goal of restoring respect and dignity to the music industry, ZAM will no longer facilitate funeral contributions (commonly known as “begging bowls”) for members or non-members. We have observed the financial pressure and public embarrassment that these unplanned collections bring to bereaved families and the industry at large.

This practice is hereby replaced by structured, professional insurance policies.

2. Automatic Membership Cover (The Best Life Policy)

We urge all musicians to formalize their status by paying their yearly subscription fees. To provide immediate value, your membership now comes with an automatic funeral insurance cover underwritten by Best Life Insurance.

An automatic K5,000 funeral cover upon payment of annual ZAM subscription fees.

Members have the flexibility to “Top-Up” their cover directly with Best Life for higher tiers:
Ruby Plan: Benefit of K10,000.
Emerald Plan: Benefit of K15,000.

Certain tiers also include Hospital Cash Protection (K1,500/year), ensuring support if an artist is hospitalized and unable to work.

3. Supplementary Comprehensive Cover (The FSG MoU)

Recognizing that a dignified send-off often requires more than financial cash, the Executive has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with FSG Zambia. We strongly recommend all members sign up for this supplementary policy to cushion the impact of bereavement.

FSG policies typically go beyond cash to provide professional services, including:

1. Provision of quality caskets/coffins.

2. Professional mortuary services and body collection.

3. Hearse services and transport for mourners.

4. Funeral logistics (tents, chairs, and programs).

By planning today, members ensure their loved ones are not burdened with high logistics costs during a time of grief.

This decision is not intended to discourage the spirit of “Ubuntu” or helping one another. Help can still be rendered in an individual capacity as colleagues.

However, as an Association, we are moving away from the “begging bowl” life that reduces the status of our artists.

Death is inevitable. Planning for it is not just a financial decision; it is an act of responsibility toward those we love and a commitment to the dignity of the Zambian music industry.

We reiterate our call to all musicians to utilize the MoUs and policies we have secured. Let us embrace the future of a professional, self-sustaining, and respected creative sector.

23-year-old medical student who failed medical exam twice fakes attack and chops off his own foot to secure admission under disability quota

A 23-year-old medical aspirant, who lodged an attempted murd£r complaint, claiming unidentified assailants had amputated his foot while he was asleep, might have deliberately severed his foot to secure admission in a medical college through disability quota, Jaunpur police said.

According to police, an attempt to murd£r case was initially registered after a man named Akash Bhaskar lodged a complaint on Sunday, stating some assailants attacked his younger brother, Suraj Bhaskar, a resident of Khalilpur village, and severed his left leg from the midfoot region.

However, during the course of investigation, police said they found evidence suggesting that the injury was self-inflicted and carried out with the intention of securing admission in a medical college under the disability category, officials said.

“A diary was recovered where the victim had written ‘I will become an MBBS doctor in 2026,’ and had also mentioned the word ‘amputation’ in his notes. These findings, along with his statements, led the police to question his version of events,” officials said, adding the victim was reportedly under mental stress having failed to clear National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) twice.

Police said they found no sign of forced entry into the victim’s house and their suspicion grew based on the evidence collected so far.

Suraj is currently undergoing treatment and his condition is stated to be stable, police said.

According to officials, the complainant alleged that his brother was attacked on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday when the assailants attacked Suraj and fled the spot, leaving him unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital and a complaint was lodged at the Line Bazaar police station.

However, based on electronic evidence and technical analysis, the police found no indication of forced entry into their house.

They said that as per the complainant, the attack happened between midnight and 5 am, which should have resulted in heavy blood loss, something that was not found at the spot. After searching the area, they also recovered a syringe with anaesthetic drug, raising further suspicion, officials said.

The police also found that the victim had a minor disability in his hand and had earlier visited Banaras Hindu University (BHU) to obtain a disability certificate. However, the certificate was not issued as the percentage of disability was found to be below the required limit.

Based on the evidence collected so far, police said the investigation suggests that the youth may have allegedly amputated his foot using a grinder machine, commonly used in house construction and other works.

They are currently seeking legal opinion to determine what sections of criminal law could be levelled against him, officials said.

BURUNDI FIRM TARGETS ZAMBIA FERTILISER PRODUCTION

BURUNDI FIRM TARGETS ZAMBIA FERTILISER PRODUCTION

President Hakainde Hichilema has welcomed plans by Burundi-based Itracom Fertiliser Limited to establish a one-million-metric-tonne fertiliser production plant in Zambia.

President Hichilema says the proposed investment aligns with the Government’s agenda to strengthen the agriculture sector through increased local fertiliser production.

He says he was encouraged that engagements held during the 2024 State Visit by Burundi President Evariste Ndayishiye are now yielding concrete economic cooperation.

President Hichilema said this when Itracom Fertilizer Limited Chairperson Adrien Ntigacika paid a courtesy call on him at State House today.

Mr. Ntigacika said the fertiliser manufacturing plant is expected to create about 5,000 jobs for local people.

He added that the company is motivated by Zambia’s availability of key raw materials, which will support the production of high-quality organic fertiliser and position the country as a major supplier within the region.

Meanwhile, Burundi’s Ambassador to Zambia Evelyne Butoyi thanked President Hichilema for creating a favourable environment for investment.

Chamisa come back raises stakes

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has announced his political comeback, stirring excitement in a country where opposition politics has been struggling to stay relevant.

Chamisa, who abruptly left the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in January 2024 over alleged Zanu-PF infiltration, unveiled his new political plan, “Agenda 2026,” on Friday. He described the initiative as a movement—not a political party—aimed at uniting citizens, reclaiming democratic agency, and preparing for a future citizens’ government. The plan also includes promoting a “moral revolution” and re-engaging the international community.

Chamisa’s departure from the CCC followed the emergence of Sengezo Tshabangu, a suspected Zanu-PF proxy, who began recalling elected opposition representatives shortly after the 2023 elections. At the time, Chamisa said he would not “swim in a river with hungry crocodiles,” referring to party members he accused of being sell-outs.

Since Chamisa’s exit, other opposition figures struggled to fill the political vacuum. Pashor Raphael Sibanda, a recalled opposition politician, said: “His return restores real opposition power and legitimacy. His absence exposed a vacuum, his return settles it.”

Reactions on social media have been a mix of excitement and cautious optimism. Supporters praised Chamisa’s boldness and expressed willingness to participate in grassroots mobilisation, while some demanded clarity on internal democracy and accountability. A few critics questioned whether his return would be effective, citing past leadership decisions and perceived reluctance to directly confront President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Political analyst Reuben Mbofana welcomed Chamisa’s return as a potential boost for democratic contestation but cautioned: “The key question now is what has fundamentally changed since he stepped aside two years ago. A comeback without a radically different strategy risks being merely cosmetic.”

Chamisa’s return comes at a politically sensitive time, with Zanu-PF loyalists seeking to extend President Mnangagwa’s tenure beyond constitutional limits, raising the stakes for opposition unity and strategy ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

Prophet Walter Magaya Arrested Outside Harare Magistrate Court

Prophet Walter Magaya was arrested today at the Harare Magistrate Court’s parking lot.

He was apprehended by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Authorities have not yet disclosed the reasons for his arrest, promising to provide details in due course.

Arrest follows court postponements
Prophet Magaya was leaving the court with his legal team when the arrest occurred, H-Metro reveals. He was at the Harare Magistrates Court for his rape trial.

His rape trial was postponed to tomorrow, while his fraud trial was deferred to 27 March, pending High Court indictment.

Walter Magaya’s Rape Case
According to court documents, the allegations against Magaya go back to 2013, when he reportedly met one complainant for a prayer session. Prosecutors allege that he made sexual advances and subsequently committed rape at a hotel in Harare, with further incidents claimed to have taken place on two additional occasions involving the same woman.

Magaya is also facing separate allegations of sexual assault in 2018 concerning another woman in South Africa. Court papers state that the complainant was allegedly brought to South Africa under the pretext of conducting business related to machinery and raw materials. Prosecutors claim that, with the assistance of his aides, Magaya allegedly assaulted the woman during the trip and again later in October 2018 at his Marlborough offices in Harare.

Records show that the complainant attempted to report the incidents at Waterfalls and Harare Central police stations in 2018, but the matter reportedly did not proceed at the time, allegedly due to Magaya’s influence.

He was arrested on 1 November 2025 during a surprise raid.

Rapper Kanye West apologizes for ‘reckless’ antisemitic comments

Controversial rapper, Kanye West has publicly apologized for his history of “reckless” antisemitic comments, attributing his behavior to an undiagnosed brain injury and mental health issues.

Over the years,Kanye has made various antisemitic and racist statements. In one post, he declared he was a Nazi and praised Adolf Hitler.

In a full-page advertisement in The Wall Street Journal titled “To Those I’ve Hurt,” he said in part: “I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people.”

In the advertisement published Monday, he said: “I regret and am deeply mortified by my actions in that state, and am committed to accountability, treatment, and meaningful change.”

Kanye wrote that the right frontal lobe of his brain was injured in a car accident 25 years ago. “It wasn’t properly diagnosed until 2023,” he said. The “medical oversight caused serious damage to my mental health and led to my bipolar type-1 diagnosis.”

“I lost touch with reality,” he wrote, adding that he “became detached from my true self.”

“In that fractured state, I gravitated towards the most destructive symbol I could find, the swastika, and even sold t-shirts bearing it,” Ye wrote, referring to the symbol appropriated by Nazi Germany and modern white supremacists.

Ye wrote that he “fell into a four-month long manic episode of psychotic, paranoid, and impulsive behavior” in early 2025. He then hit “rock bottom a few months ago” and, at the encouragement of his wife, Bianca Censori, sought out “help.”

He said he found a “new baseline and new center through an effective regime of medication, therapy, exercise, and clean living.”

“I’m not asking for sympathy, or a free pass, though I aspire to earn your forgiveness,” said Ye, who is set to release a new album Friday. “I write today to simply ask for your patience and understanding as I find my way home.”

In 2023, the Anti-Defamation League, a leading Jewish advocacy group, said it had documented at least 30 antisemitic incidents nationwide that “directly reference Ye.”

Ye has previously apologized for his antisemitic comments. In a December 2023 Instagram post written in Hebrew, Ye wrote in part: “It was not my intention to offend or demean, and I deeply regret any pain I may have caused.”

He then doubled down in the February tirade on X, saying in part: “I’m never apologizing for my Jewish comments.

EGYPT TO RESTRICT CHILDREN’S SOCIAL MEDIA USE

EGYPT TO RESTRICT CHILDREN’S SOCIAL MEDIA USE

EGYPT’S Parliament is looking into ways to regulate children’s use of social media platforms to combat what lawmakers called “digital choas,” following some western countries that are considering banning young teenagers from social media.

The House of Representatives said in a statement late Sunday that it will work on a legislation to regulate children’s use of social media and “put an end to the digital chaos our children are facing, and which negatively impacts their future.”

Legislators will consult with the government and expert bodies to draft a law to “protect Egyptian children from any risks that threaten its thoughts and behavior,” the statement said.

The statement came after President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi on Saturday urged his government and lawmakers to consider adopting legislation restricting children’s use of social media, “until they reach an age when they can handle it properly.”

The president’s televised comments urged his government to look at other countries including Australia and the United Kingdom that are working on legislations to “restrict or ban” children from social media.

About 50% of children under 18 in Egypt use social media platforms where they are likely exposed to harmful content, cyberbullying and abuse, according to a 2024 report by the National Center for Social and Criminological Research, a government-linked think tank.

In December, Australia became the first country to ban social media for children younger than 16. The move triggered fraught debates about technology use, privacy, child safety and mental health and has prompted other countries to consider similar measures.

The British government said it will consider banning young teenagers from social media while tightening laws designed to protect children from harmful content and excessive screen time.

French President Emmanuel Macron urged his government to fast-track the legal process to ensure a social media ban for children under 15 can be enforced at the start of the next school year in September.

Zimbabwe Makes History with Single-Digit Inflation After 20 Years: USD Plunges To 1%, ZiG Stable at 4.1%

Zimbabwe Hits Single-Digit Inflation For First Time In 20 Years: USD Inflation Plunges To 1%, ZiG Falls To 4.1%
Zimbabwe has made economic history. For the first time in over two decades, the nation’s inflation rate has fallen into single digits. Official data for January 2026 reveals a dramatic collapse in the US dollar inflation rate to just 1%, while the new local currency, the ZiG, has stabilised at an annual inflation rate of 4.1%.

The milestone, announced by the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion on 26 January 2026, marks the end of a 20-year wait for price stability. In a sweeping statement, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube declared the achievement a foundational victory for the nation’s economic future.

“This marks a critical milestone towards durable macroeconomic stability, critical for sustainable economic growth and the achievement of Vision 2030, Towards a Prosperous and Empowered Upper Middle-Income Society.”

A Historic Milestone Built on Gold Reserves
Minister Ncube directly linked this success to the introduction of the structured ZiG currency in April 2024. He emphasised that the currency’s backing by tangible reserves has been crucial to building public and market confidence, calling the result of a concerted policy effort.

“This marks a historic milestone for Zimbabwe after nearly three decades since the country recorded single-digit inflation in domestic currency. This is a result of concerted and consistent efforts by the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe through the implementation of complimentary fiscal and monetary policies.”

The statement provided a clear definition of the newly achieved stability and its intended permanence.

“Price stability implies low and stable inflation, typically single digit inflation. The objective of the Government is to maintain single digit inflation for the year and beyond as part of the macro-economic stabilising framework.”

The reserves backing the ZiG have seen substantial growth. The Ministry reported that foreign asset reserves increased from US$276 million (approx. R5.2 billion) at the currency’s launch to US$1.2 billion (approx. R22.8 billion) by the end of December 2025.

Price Stability Reaches the Kitchen Table

The government’s report presented data suggesting the inflationary slowdown is being felt by consumers. A comparison of prices from January 2025 to December 2025 showed little movement or even decreases in the cost of essentials like bread, mealie meal, sugar, and cooking oil.

The Ministry outlined the profound impact of this new stability, shifting the national conversation from survival to planning.

“For citizens, stable prices preserve buying power of incomes and protects savings. For business, it enables long term planning, reduces operational costs and enhances profitability. This also eliminates opportunities for arbitrage and speculation which distorts the macro-economic environment.”

The Call to Cement the Victory
Looking forward, the statement contained a direct appeal to businesses and labour unions. The government urged all sectors of society to help lock in the gains and prevent a return to the volatile cycles of the past.

“To further guarantee the stability going forward, there is also need for all stakeholders, particularly business and labour to work closely with Government to entrench stability. Specifically, business should exercise restraint in price setting, while workers should align their salary adjustments requests to inflation developments.”

Minister Ncube concluded that this achievement aligns Zimbabwe with key regional SADC macroeconomic benchmarks, which target an inflation range of 3-7%. The explicit goal is now to defend this single-digit territory for the foreseeable future.

Zimbabwe Sets Sights on Building World-Class National Stadium to End Playing Home Matches Abroad

Zimbabwe Sets Sights on Building World-Class National Stadium to End Playing Home Matches Abroad

Zimbabwe’s long-running stadium crisis could be nearing a turning point after the Ministry of Finance took the lead in negotiations for a new multi-purpose national sports facility.

Officials say the initiative is aimed squarely at ending the country’s sporting exile, which has seen the national football team play “home” matches beyond Zimbabwe’s borders due to facilities that no longer meet international requirements.

Davos meeting puts project on fast track
According to ZimLive, the latest momentum came on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube held talks with senior executives from Mabetex Group, a global construction firm with a track record in large-scale infrastructure projects.

Treasury confirmed that the meeting brought together Mabetex founder and chairman Behgjet Pacolli, alongside the company’s general counsel Korab Toplica, signalling what officials described as strong technical and commercial backing for the proposed development.

The stadium is earmarked for Mount Hampden, the country’s new administrative capital on the outskirts of Harare.

Long-term financing model proposed
Rather than placing immediate strain on public finances, the project is being designed around a long-term financing arrangement spanning three decades. According to the ministry, this approach is intended to ensure the stadium is delivered without heavy upfront pressure on the national budget.

Mabetex is reportedly working with experts aligned to FIFA standards to ensure the facility complies fully with international requirements, a key factor in Zimbabwe’s bid to regain hosting rights for competitive matches.

Beyond football: a global events venue
Plans for the stadium go well beyond football. The proposed complex is expected to include a retractable roof and operate as a mixed-use venue capable of hosting rugby internationals, large concerts and other major global events.

Authorities believe this flexibility could transform the stadium into a year-round economic asset rather than a single-purpose sports ground.

Restoring pride and ending sporting exile
Government officials have framed the project as more than just bricks and mortar, describing it as a strategic investment to stimulate development around Mount Hampden, create opportunities for young people and revive national pride.

If realised, the Mount Hampden stadium could mark the end of that era, allowing Zimbabwe to once again host international matches on home soil and re-enter the global sporting stage.

UFC’s Themba Gorimbo Divides Zimbabwe After Disowning Entire Country, Wants Ashes Scattered in SA’s Kruger Park

‘My Ashes Belong in Kruger, Not Zimbabwe’: UFC Star Themba Gorimbo Disowns Nation
Zimbabwean UFC fighter Themba Gorimbo has plunged the nation into a heated and emotional debate, with citizens taking starkly opposing sides after his explosive interview on CNN. Speaking to Larry Madowo on 24 January, Gorimbo delivered a raw account of personal pain, announcing a complete break from his family and his wish to have his ashes scattered in South Africa’s Kruger National Park instead of his homeland. Gorimbo’s core assertion was one of total abandonment. He claimed a complete lack of support during his arduous journey from diamond smuggling to the UFC octagon.

“Nobody in Zimbabwe supported me, not even my family,” Gorimbo told Madowo, a statement that would become the flashpoint for national controversy.

He compounded this rejection with specific final instructions that many saw as the ultimate snub.

“If I die, burn my body and throw my dust at Kruger National Park,” he stated.

A Chorus Of The Hurt: “We Were There For You”
The immediate and visceral reaction from a great many Zimbabweans was one of profound hurt and a sense of betrayal. Countless social media users, journalists, and ordinary citizens came forward to assert that they had actively supported and celebrated Gorimbo, particularly after he became the first Zimbabwean to win a UFC fight in 2023. This group feels their loyalty has been carelessly erased. Social media user Setfree Nherera Mafukidze captured this collective sentiment in a heartfelt public letter.

“Your statement overlooks the countless Zimbabweans who publicly and consistently offered you moral support… We cheered you on. We defended your name. We believed in you,” Mafukidze wrote, adding, “Do not write us out of your story as though we were absent spectators.”

Commentator Chitandare Makombe pointed to Gorimbo’s own past displays of national pride, making his current disavowal confusing and painful for supporters.

“When Themba succeeded we celebrated with him. He started going to matches with the Zimbabwean flag. We’ve seen this kind of about turns… Accidents or engineered outcomes?” Makombe questioned on X.

Other reactions blended disappointment with a pointed critique of his judgement. User Chef Vie issued a stark warning.

“This one will sober up one day and realize this mistake. There are things you don’t say unless you are foolishly ignorant,” they posted.

The Backlash: “He Is Always Complaining”
Beyond the hurt, a significant and vocal segment has placed the blame for the controversy squarely on Gorimbo himself. These critics argue he is a perpetual victim who fails to acknowledge help received and burns bridges indiscriminately. Prominent critic larry kwirirayi has been relentless in this view, highlighting Gorimbo’s fallouts with former training partners and others.

“How come everyone else is wrong except him. Sparring partners, trainers, supporters, Zim media, friends, family, country are all wrong, except Themba Gorimbo. Achavigwa negonzo (He will be buried by a rat),” kwirirayi posted, later adding in a separate exchange, “We are tired of him. He is always complaining. Taabho (We are done).”

This sentiment was echoed by user Joe Black, who suggested Gorimbo’s own words were his undoing.

“Zimbos actually loved this man, until he started talking shit outside his lane, then everyone turned on him. He must reflect,” the user stated.

The critique extends to his approach, with some like Chris Chinaire suggesting poor communication strategy damaged his valid feelings.

“Illustration of why PR help is needed on the global stage. A different choice of words could have delivered what he wanted to say without conceding own goals,” Chinaire remarked.

Understanding The Pain: A Defence Born Of Trauma
In stark contrast, a large number of voices have risen in Gorimbo’s defence, framing his outburst as the understandable result of deep personal trauma and the crushing weight of entitled expectations, often termed “black tax.” For these individuals, Gorimbo’s story is a familiar tale of struggle against a system that only celebrates success but mocks effort. User Pascal Mwenge framed it in stark economic terms.

“Black tax broke this man. Family mocked him when he was broke, then expected handouts when he made it. Now he wants his ashes in Kruger, not Zimbabwe. Brutal, but can we really blame him?” Mwenge posted.

Others, like TINASHE NYAMUKAPA, used the moment for a broader societal critique.

“Zimbabwean families let’s learn to support the dreams of our children… Support is most needed when one is still in the dumps and in the gutter,” they urged.

Some defenders, like user Freeman, connected Gorimbo’s personal disillusionment directly to the national political climate.

“Every problem in Zimbabwe and that Zimbabweans face outside it, is caused by Zanu Pf,” posted user Tabani, while Freeman added, “A lot of people have moved on and have given up on the country.”

Some, like user Simbarashe Manhanga, have looked beyond the controversy to express concern for Gorimbo’s well-being, seeing his outbursts as a “cry for help.”

The fighter has not issued any follow-up statements since the interview’s broadcast.

Steve Bannon flips out after Trump’s White House ‘blinks’ first on Minnesota ICE crackdown

One of President Donald Trump’s closest allies flipped out on Monday after the president did another U-turn on the situation in Minneapolis.

Steve Bannon, a former White House advisor, said on his “War Room” podcast on Monday that Trump “blinked” in Minneapolis after the president and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, had “a very good call.” Trump announced on Truth Social that he and Walz discussed how to work together on immigration operations in the state, and that the two leaders seemed to be “on a similar wavelength.”

The administration also announced that Customs and Border Patrol commander, Greg Bovino, is also leaving Minneapolis, which some analysts have described as the Trump administration retreating.

Bannon raged at Trump’s comments on his podcast.

“I don’t think you can call this anything but the White House blinking,” Bannon said. “That Walz called up Trump and slobbered all over him.”

Trump’s immigration tactics have been under increased scrutiny since he surged officers into Minneapolis, Minnesota, earlier this month. The administration sent the officers under the guise of combating social benefits fraud, but agents have largely been conducting operations that stretch constitutional bounds at best.

Two U.S. citizens have been killed by immigration operations since the surge began. Renee Good, 37, was gunned down just a few blocks from her home as she tried to drive away from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid just a few blocks from her home. An ICU nurse named Alex Pretti was also gunned down by masked agents at a protest last Saturday.

Bannon also took aim at Republicans for helping to fuel the crisis in Minneapolis.

“Republicans in Congress have sat there and allowed this to happen for year after year,” Bannon said. “What did they do? They call [Alejandro] Mayorkas up a couple of times, and sent some strongly worded letters? They did nothing!”

Trump claims secret ‘Discombobulator’ weapon helped capture Nicolás Maduro

US President, Donald Trump, has claimed that American forces used a secret weapon he referred to as a “discombobulator” during the operation that led to the capture of then-Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro earlier this month.

Speaking in an interview with the New York Post, Trump said he was not permitted to discuss details of the weapon but suggested it rendered enemy equipment inoperable during the operation.

“The discombobulator, I’m not allowed to talk about it,” Trump said, adding that it “made [enemy] equipment not work.”

However, a senior US official has cast doubt on the existence of such a weapon, suggesting the president may have been conflating multiple military tools and capabilities rather than referring to a single device.

According to the official, US forces employed cyber capabilities during the operation to disable Venezuelan early-warning systems and other defence infrastructure. Acoustic systems were also reportedly used to disorient personnel on the ground.

The US military has long possessed a non-lethal directed-energy weapon known as the Active Denial System (ADS), sometimes referred to as a “heat ray.” While it remains unclear whether ADS was deployed during the operation, the system uses electromagnetic waves to create an intense heating sensation on the skin, forcing individuals to move away from the beam.

Reports that ADS can reach targets more than half a mile away and is designed to disperse crowds without causing permanent injury.

Days after Maduro’s capture, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reposted comments allegedly made by a Venezuelan security guard who claimed US forces “launched something” resembling a powerful sound wave during the operation.

The guard alleged that he and others experienced severe physical effects, including intense head pain, nosebleeds and vomiting blood, leaving them unable to move.

The January 3 operation began with coordinated strikes across Venezuela that disabled radar, communications and air-defence systems, paving the way for US helicopters to enter Venezuelan airspace.

Air Force General Dan Caine, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said more than 150 aircraft — including bombers, fighter jets and intelligence and surveillance platforms were deployed from roughly 20 land- and sea-based locations.

Experts believe one-way attack drones were also used during strikes in the coastal city of Higuerote, a key location for Venezuelan air-defence installations.

Video footage from the operation shows intense gunfire as US forces landed inside Fort Tiuna, a major military complex in Caracas. Military analysts say the sounds are consistent with MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters firing 30-millimetre autocannons.

The precise location within Fort Tiuna where Maduro was captured, as well as full operational details, have not been publicly disclosed.

Roy Keane insists Michael Carrick should not get permanent Manchester United job

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has said he would not give Michael Carrick the club’s managerial job on a permanent basis, despite the former midfielder’s impressive results as interim boss, including victories over teams managed by Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta.

Keane made his views known during a heated debate on Sky Sports following Manchester United’s 3–2 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Carrick, 44, has enjoyed a remarkable start in temporary charge, recording wins over Manchester City, Arsenal, Unai Emery’s side and Thomas Tuchel’s team, giving him a perfect points return since taking over earlier this month.

Asked by Micah Richards whether Carrick should now be considered for the job full-time, Keane dismissed the suggestion. “No, you’re being silly now,” he said. “He’s had two great performances but anybody can win two games.

“It’s what he does until the end of the season and even if they do get into fourth I still wouldn’t be convinced he’s the man for the job, absolutely not. They need a bigger and better manager but he’s got the opportunity.”

Keane went further, insisting that even a flawless run would not change his opinion. “I think if United win every game from now until the end of the season, I still wouldn’t be giving him the job,” he said. “I just think they need a bigger, more experienced manager, it’s as simple as that.

“Carrick could win every game. The timing coming into the job is fantastic for him. And he said it there, he’s enjoying it, but you’re enjoying management when you’re winning football matches, of course.”

Manchester United’s win over Arsenal came after a dramatic comeback, with goals from Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha sealing victory after Bryan Mbeumo had earlier capitalised on an error to equalise. The result followed a previous win over Manchester City and has put United in a strong position in the league.

Keane questioned whether Carrick could meet the long-term demands of the club. “The size of the club and the challenges they will face over the next few years… you want a manager who you feel can come in and get United winning league titles,” he said.

“Are we all going to sit here and believe Michael Carrick can get United winning league titles? The last two weeks are not enough for me. If you think off the back of two wins he warrants the job then that’s your opinion and I’m entitled to mine and I don’t believe he is the man to get United back to winning league titles.”

Former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira disagreed, arguing that Carrick deserved a chance, citing examples of younger managers who had succeeded at top clubs. “I think you have young managers with no experience who deserve to have a chance,” Vieira said, pointing to cases in European football where first-time managers had thrived.

Keane rejected the comparison, saying: “There’s loads of examples of young managers getting opportunities and doing really well. But there’s more examples of managers getting jobs and not doing well.”

Gary Neville later offered a more measured view, saying Carrick’s football had made him feel like he had “got his club back,” but suggesting the board should still look to appoint an elite, experienced coach at the end of the season. Keane, however, also challenged Neville’s praise, continuing the animated exchange on air.

Carrick is expected to remain in charge until the end of the season, similar to the interim role previously occupied by Ralf Rangnick, while Manchester United search for a permanent head coach.

Parents sue Meta, TikTok over psychological harm to children

The impact of social media on children’s mental health has been debated for years. In some countries, like Australia, it has even led to bans on platforms for children under 16.

Now parents want to prove in court that companies know about the harm their platforms are doing to children but are doing nothing,, Thje Wall Street Journal reports.

The first of several high-profile lawsuits against Meta, TikTok and YouTube will begin this week in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The cases will examine whether social media is harming children’s mental health. The key lawsuit involves a teenage girl who claims that her use of multiple platforms throughout her childhood caused her to suffer from anxiety and depression.

Dozens of lawsuits have been filed in the US against major tech companies since 2022, alleging that social media platforms deliberately tweaked their algorithms to make children addicted and spend more time on their platforms. The companies deny the allegations, saying the complaints relate to user-generated content for which they are not legally responsible.

A Los Angeles court will examine whether social media is linked to depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts in children. Previous studies have suggested that there may not be a direct link: children with the most mental health problems tend to spend less time online. However, experts have noted that the issue is more complex than it seems, and more research is needed to draw firm conclusions.

If the lawsuit is successful, the court could force technology companies to change the design of social networks or expand legal liability for potential harm suffered by their users.

Trump agrees to pull ICE out of Minnesota to allow cops investigate after ICE agent k!lled a nurse

U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly agreed to pull ICE agents out of Minnesota and allow local cops to investigate a protester’s k!lling by federal agents.

The President held a phone call with the state’s governor on Monday following the death of 37-year-old Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse who was shot de@d by agents during protests against the immigration crackdown in Minneapolis on Saturday.

Tim Walz’s office said: ‘The President agreed that he would talk to his Department of Homeland Security about ensuring the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is able to conduct an independent investigation, as would ordinarily be the case.

‘The President also agreed to look into reducing the number of federal agents in Minnesota and working with the state in a more coordinated fashion on immigration enforcement regarding violent criminals.’

Trump’s call with Walz comes after the President last night blamed Pretti’s death on ‘Democrat-ensued chaos’. He has accused Walz of standing by while violent mobs attack ICE agents and threatened to deploy troops under the Insurrection Act.

But the President has privately expressed concerns about Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, reports say, and on Monday, he sidelined the MAGA loyalist, ordering Tom Homan to lead the ICE operation in Minnesota.

‘I am sending Tom Homan to Minnesota tonight. He has not been involved in that area, but knows and likes many of the people there,’ Trump wrote on Truth Social. ‘Tom is tough but fair, and will report directly to me.’

Pretti, an ICU nurse, was sh0t and k!lled by a U.S. Border Patrol agent while filming federal officers on a Minneapolis street.

The officer’s operation was targeting Jose Huerta-Chuma, an illegal immigrant with a criminal history including domestic assault for intentional conflict bodily harm, disorderly conduct, and driving without a valid license.

The Minneapolis sho0ting of Pretti also marked the second de@th that happened in a confrontation between federal immigration officers and civilians in the city.

Renee Good was sh0t and k!lled on Jan. 7 by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a different operation.

Zelensky reveals US security deal for Ukraine is ‘100% ready to be signed’

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said a US-backed document outlining security guarantees for Ukraine is “100 per cent” ready to be signed, describing it as a major step toward ending the war with Russia.

Zelensky said he was waiting for confirmation of the time and venue for the signing, after which the agreement would be sent to the US Congress and the Ukrainian parliament for ratification.

“For us, security guarantees are first and foremost guarantees of security from the United States,” Zelensky said. “The document is 100 per cent ready, and we are waiting for our partners to confirm the date and place when we will sign it.”

The announcement comes despite the absence of an immediate breakthrough from weekend trilateral talks involving Russian and Ukrainian negotiators and American mediators in Abu Dhabi. Shortly after the talks ended, Russia launched a fresh wave of overnight attacks on Ukraine, killing at least one person and leaving millions without electricity and heating during subzero temperatures.

Ukrainian authorities said the strikes targeted central heating and power infrastructure, leaving many civilians without warmth. Zelensky said Russia launched more than 370 attack drones and 21 missiles of various types.

Talks in Abu Dhabi on Friday and Saturday marked the first face-to-face discussions between Russian and Ukrainian representatives focused on proposals linked to the Trump administration’s peace plan. American officials suggested the discussions went “better than expected,” raising the possibility of a future summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky.

The Kremlin said the talks were held in a “constructive spirit” but cautioned that significant work remained. “It would be a mistake to expect any significant results from the initial contacts,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. “But the very fact that these contacts have begun in a constructive spirit can be viewed positively. However, there is significant work ahead.”

Russia’s delegation was led by Admiral Igor Kostyukov, head of the GRU military intelligence agency, while Ukraine was represented by Zelensky’s chief of staff, Kyrylo Budanov. The US team reportedly included special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Despite signs of cautious optimism behind closed doors, divisions remain sharp, particularly over the eastern Donbas region. Zelensky has repeatedly said Ukraine will not surrender the territory, warning it could serve as a launchpad for future Russian attacks. Donbas is strategically significant, containing major industrial assets and mineral resources, including lithium, uranium and rare earths.

Putin has insisted that Russia wants full control of the region, which Ukraine still partly holds and has defended at heavy cost since the start of the invasion. A US-backed proposal would turn Donbas into a demilitarised free economic zone in exchange for security guarantees for Ukraine, though Moscow is widely expected to reject the idea.

Further talks are scheduled to continue in Abu Dhabi. Zelensky has said he is willing to abandon Ukraine’s bid to join NATO as a concession toward ending the nearly four-year war, in exchange for what he described as “legally binding” security guarantees from the United States and its allies.

“These security guarantees are an opportunity to prevent another wave of Russian aggression, and this is already a compromise on our part,” he said.

Meanwhile, the latest Russian strikes left more than a million people in Kyiv and Chernihiv without power, with about half of Kyiv’s apartment buildings reportedly cut off from heating. The European Union accused Moscow of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, while Ukrainian authorities said the energy sector remains under a state of emergency due to sustained attacks.

Former Spain Football manager sacked for ‘ordering team to stay awake for 28 hours after using ChatGPT to plan training’

Former Spain manager, Robert Moreno, was sacked for heavily relying on ChatGPT to make decisions in his team.

Moreno, 48, left Russian First League club FC Sochi last September after picking up just one point from seven matches.

According to the club’s former sporting director Andrei Orlov, Moreno was a big fan of ChatGPT and used it to make some bizarre decisions.

On an away trip to Khabarovsk, Moreno rigidly stuck to the Artificial Intelligence platform’s prompts to plan his team’s schedule.

He ordered his team to train at 7am two days before the match and demanded they stay awake for a continuous period of 28 hours.

In an interview with Sports Russia, Orlov said: “When we were preparing for a trip to Khabarovsk, Robert said, ‘I’ve got it all figured out. I’ve set up all the trip parameters in ChatGPT.’

“I looked at the presentation: it showed that the players weren’t supposed to sleep for 28 hours. I asked, “Robert, that’s all great, but when are the guys going to sleep?

“They (the players) didn’t understand why we had to wake up at five in the morning and train at seven.

“We had Oleg Kozhemyakin on our team, who had played a year for SKA (Khabarovsk) just before Sochi. Moreno didn’t even consult with him.

“In the end, we followed the schedule created by ChatGPT.”

Moreno also depended on ChatGPT to decide on signing a new striker in the summer.

Orlov said: “Last summer, we were looking for a striker, choosing between Vladimir Pisarsky, Pavel Meleshin and Artur Shushenachev.

“Moreno entered the data of Pisarsky, Meleshin, and Shushenachev from Wyscout into ChatGPT. Shushenachev emerged as the best according to GPT.”

Sochi went ahead and signed Shushenachev, who failed to score a single goal in 10 matches.

Orlov added: “An additional tool—why not? But for Moreno, GPT eventually became one of his primary tools.

“Towards the end, the Russian core was very unhappy with Moreno, and the foreigners weren’t so confident in his ideas either.

“He was completely unsympathetic to his assistants and players—people sensed it.”

Under Moreno, Sochi were relegated from the Russian Premier League to the First League.

Moreno managed three games for Spain on an interim basis and was given the permanent job in June 2019 after Luis Enrique resigned due to his daughter’s sickness.

Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez says she has had ‘Enough’ of US orders

Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, said Sunday she has had “enough” of Washington’s orders, as she works to unite the country after the US capture of former leader Nicolás Maduro.

Rodríguez has been walking a tightrope since being backed by the US to lead the country in the interim, balancing the need to keep Maduro loyalists on board at home while trying to satisfy the White House. Now, almost a month into her new role, she has pushed back on the US amid ongoing pressure, including a series of demands for Venezuela to resume oil production.

“Enough already of Washington’s orders over politicians in Venezuela,” she told a group of oil workers in Puerto La Cruz, in an event broadcast by state-run channel Venezolana de Televisión.

“Let Venezuelan politics resolve our differences and our internal conflicts. This Republic has paid a very high price for having to confront the consequences of fascism and extremism in our country.”

The White House has maintained steady pressure on Venezuela since Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were seized in a raid in early January and taken to the US, where the former leader faces charges.

Rodríguez, Maduro’s former deputy, has insisted in recent weeks that the US does not govern Venezuela but has also avoided direct confrontation with Washington.

US President Donald Trump had claimed the US was “going to run” Venezuela immediately after Maduro’s capture, but he later endorsed Rodríguez as the country’s interim leader.

For the past 25 years, oil-rich socialist Venezuela has been in constant confrontation with the US. But after deposing Maduro, Washington is now seeking to secure a stable authority in Caracas.

Internally, the country remains divided among Maduro loyalists, left-wing opposition groups, and “Chavistas No-Maduristas”—supporters of the late Hugo Chávez who reject Maduro, accusing him of betraying the ideals of 21st-century socialism.

Days after the US strikes on Caracas in early January, the Trump administration outlined a series of demands Venezuela must meet, including cutting ties with China, Iran, Russia, and Cuba, and partnering exclusively with the US on oil production, two senior White House said.

Rodríguez was also expected to prioritize the Trump administration and US oil companies for future oil sales.

Venezuela’s main economic driver is oil. The country has the world’s largest reserves of extra-heavy crude, a variety that requires a more complex refining process but is compatible with US refineries.

Iran’s Supreme leader moved to underground bunker  as Iran Prepares For Possible US Strikes

Iran’s supreme leader has been moved to a high-security underground shelter amid rising fears of a possible US military attack, as tensions escalate between Tehran and Washington.

The development comes as senior Iranian military officials warn of an increased risk of US action, with protests continuing across the country and security forces carrying out a deadly crackdown. The bunker is believed to be designed to protect the leader during wartime scenarios, while his third son, Masoud Khamenei, has reportedly taken over management of his father’s day-to-day affairs as the Ayatollah remains in hiding.

The heightened alert follows comments last week by US President Donald Trump, who said American warships were being deployed toward Iran “just in case” military action becomes necessary.

“We have a massive fleet heading in that direction, and maybe we won’t have to use it,” Trump said.

A US Navy official confirmed on Thursday that the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and accompanying warships are currently positioned in the Indian Ocean, moving closer to the Middle East.

Tensions between Iran and the United States have remained high since a wave of protests erupted on December 28, triggered by the collapse of Iran’s currency, the rial. The demonstrations have been met with a violent response from Iranian authorities.

President Trump has repeatedly warned Tehran, setting what he described as two red lines for potential military intervention: the killing of peaceful protesters and the mass execution of those arrested during the demonstrations.

Although Iran reportedly halted the execution of around 800 people detained during the unrest, US officials say Trump remains angered by how Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has handled the situation.

On Sunday, January 25, an Iranian official warned that any attack by the United States would trigger a full-scale conflict, as Washington continues its military build-up in the region.

“This time we will ‌treat any attack, ‍limited, unlimited, surgical, kinetic, whatever they call it – as an all-out war against us, and we will respond in the hardest way possible to settle this,” the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

“If the Americans violate Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, we will respond. This military ‌build-up – we hope it is ‌not intended for real confrontation, but our military is ready for the worst-case scenario. This is ‍why everything is on high alert in Iran.”

Iranian state television has also issued strong warnings, including a broadcast that referenced a failed assassination attempt on Trump in 2024, declaring that “this time, the bullet won’t miss.”

As diplomatic efforts remain stalled, both sides continue to signal readiness for escalation, raising concerns among international observers about the risk of a wider conflict in the region.

French president Emmanuel Macron moves to fast-track social media ban for under-15s

French President, Emmanuel Macron has said his government will fast-track legislation to ban children under the age of 15 from using social media, with the aim of enforcing the law before the start of the next school year in September.

“The brains of our children and adolescents are not for sale,” Macron said in a video released late Saturday. “Their emotions are not for sale or to be manipulated, whether by American platforms or Chinese algorithms.”

Macron said the government plans to ban social media access for under-15s and also prohibit mobile phone use in high schools, describing the move as a clear and necessary rule for teenagers, families and teachers.

The announcement comes as several Western countries push for tougher online safety laws to protect minors from the potential harms of social media. In December, Australia passed landmark legislation banning under-16s from holding accounts on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Britain has also said it is considering similar measures, including a possible ban on social media use for under-16s.

In France, the proposed ban is being driven by lawmakers who argue that existing safeguards are ineffective due to weak age-verification systems. One lawmaker involved in the process said that currently, users can simply enter any date of birth to access social platforms.

“What we want to impose on platforms, by strictly enforcing the European Digital Services Act, is real age verification when you access a social network,” she said. “That changes everything, because users will actually have to prove whether they are over or under 15.”

She acknowledged that some users may still find ways to bypass restrictions but said the priority is to take decisive steps to protect minors online.

Following Australia’s ban, authorities said more than 4.7 social media accounts believed to belong to under-16s had been deactivated or removed. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the decision was driven by growing evidence of social harm and pressure from parents and young people alike.

“We know that social harm is being caused, and therefore we have a responsibility as a government to respond,” Albanese said, adding that teenagers should be encouraged to spend more time on offline activities such as sports, music and reading.

Not everyone supports the move. Elon Musk, the owner of X, previously criticised Australia’s ban, calling it a “backdoor war to control access to the Internet,” although the platform has complied with the law.

One of the influences behind Australia’s decision was a 2024 book by American social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, which argues that social media has significantly damaged children’s mental health.

“The basic argument is that we’ve overprotected our children in the real world and under-protected them online,” Haidt said. “We were wrong on both points.”

Trump Border Patrol boss ousted after disastrous response to latest Minneapolis killing

0

Customs and Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino has been ousted from his role as “commander at large” after his disastrous response to the latest killing of a U.S. citizen by federal immigration officers, according to a new report.

President Donald Trump’s administration said on Monday that border czar Tom Homan would travel to Minneapolis and serve as the “main point of contact” for the administration’s deportation operations. Initially, they indicated Bovino was being reassigned to another station. But a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told The Atlantic that the embattled Border Patrol boss is returning to his home in California and is expected to retire soon.

Bovino’s retirement comes after a swarm of immigration agents shot and killed Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, at a protest in Minneapolis.

Bovino called Pretti a “domestic terrorist” after the shooting and said he intended to inflict maximum harm on immigration agents, two claims that Pretti’s parents called out as “lies” in a later statement.

The Atlantic reported that Bovino’s departure is the “clearest sign yet” that the Trump administration is reconsidering how it conducts its deportation operations.

Trump stuns with call to Minneapolis mayor: ‘Feels like unconditional surrender’

Political analysts and observers were stunned on Monday after details of a call between President Donald Trump and a Democratic mayor were released.

Trump spoke with Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey on Monday, two days after immigration agents shot and killed Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse who was attending a protest as a legal observer. The call happened on the same day that Trump spoke with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, also a Democrat, in a move that one of Trump’s closest allies saw as a U-turn on a winning issue for the administration

“I just had a very good telephone conversation with Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Lots of progress is being made! Tom Homan will be meeting with him tomorrow in order to continue the discussion.”

Frey added that his “main ask is that Operation Metro Surge needs to end.”

“The president agreed the present situation can’t continue,” Frey said in a statement.

Frey and Trump have clashed several times in the past, with Trump calling him a “radical Left lightweight.” The docile tone of Trump’s statement stood out to observers.

“Feels like Trump is pretty much unconditionally surrendering as support collapses,” Will Stancil, a Minnesota attorney, posted on Bluesky.

The Trump administration has faced significant scrutiny over the actions of its immigration officers in Minneapolis. There have been two high-profile killings over the last month since the administration surged resources into the city, as well as a number of reported shootings involving federal agents.

“This has been a consistent pattern, strategic retreat when things get too hot, return when it fades,” David Dayen, executive editor of The American Prospect, posted on Bluesky.

“For now, until they can convince enough Senate Dems that DHS is in retreat. Once they’re funded again, the terror will resume somewhere else,” political writer Joan McCarter posted on Bluesky.

Man conspires with wife to kill ex-wife

A Harare man has been charged with murder after allegedly conspiring with his wife to kill his ex-wife and dump her body near the Water Works complex close to Hunyani Bridge in Chitungwiza.

Brian Chanachimwe (34) is accused of luring his former wife, Jennifer Karembo (35), to his home in Crowhill, Harare, under the pretext that he wanted to give her US$150 for their three children’s school fees. Prosecutors allege that Chanachimwe and his wife, Olipa Chide, later strangled Karembo before dumping her body.

The alleged motive, according to investigators, was an attempt by Chanachimwe to evade US$2,500 in outstanding child maintenance payments.

The incident is said to have occurred earlier this month. Chanachimwe has since appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing murder charges and is expected to return to court on February 4.

In a dramatic development, Chide died by suicide on Wednesday at her grandparents’ farm in Gutu, days after Chanachimwe’s arrest. She had been expected to be charged as an accomplice.

Alleged attempts to conceal the crime

Police allege the couple tried to cover up the crime by taking Karembo’s cellphone, removing the SIM card and burying it behind their house. Her purse, which contained her national identity card, was allegedly burned.

The State further alleges that the couple hired a vehicle from a man identified as Solomon Gwanyanya, claiming they needed to transport a sick relative. With the help of an alleged accomplice, Jonah Nekati, who remains at large, the body was allegedly loaded into a hired Honda Fit around midnight.

Investigators say the body was dumped near Eyecourt, opposite St Mary’s Waterworks, where it was discovered the following day by a passer-by, Samson Bhobho, near a dust road. Police reportedly found US$11 on the deceased.

Family demands justice

Karembo’s burial in Hwedza was marked by grief and anger, with relatives calling for justice.

“We are deeply pained as a family,” said family spokesperson Ashley Kalembo. “We just want justice to take its course. What happened to our sister has left us with many unanswered questions.”

Kalembo said Karembo’s disappearance had raised immediate concern after her phone became unreachable and she failed to return home.

“The next day we contacted Brian, who claimed he had given her US$50 and left her shopping in town. We then reported her missing on January 13. Later that day, police found a woman’s body,” he said.

Another family member said the relatives believe the alleged killing was linked to maintenance disputes.

“Our pain is unbearable, but we want justice to prevail,” said Karembo’s sister, who declined to be named.

Police investigations are continuing, with efforts underway to locate the remaining suspect.

She Will Fight From The Grave: Family Of Woman Murdered By Ex-Husband Over US$2500 Child Maintenance Declares

Family Vows Victim Will “Fight From Grave” For Justice
The devastated family of a mother allegedly killed in a plot to avoid child maintenance has vowed she will seek justice from beyond the grave. Their declaration follows the murder of Jennifer Karembo, 35, whose ex-husband allegedly conspired with his new wife to kill her over US$2,500 (approx. R47,500) in arrears.

Jennifer was buried in Hwedza after her body was found dumped near Chitungwiza on January 13. The family says her ex-husband, Brian Chanachimwe, lured her to his Harare home on January 12 with a false promise of school fees money before she was killed.

“Ange Asina Kana Kuroora” (She Was Not Even Married)
In a raw and emotional statement, Jennifer’s brother, Ashley Kalembo, spoke for the grieving family. He expressed their profound loss and pointed to the rapid aftermath of the crime as a sign of impending justice.

Ashley Kalembo told H-Metro:

“We are pained as a family. We are just waiting to see what they are going to do because ange asina kana kuroora (she was not even married). Tichatangira ipapo, as for ngozi vanopedzerana vega as you can see that he committed the offence, and was arrested in less than one week.”

He revealed the chilling sequence of events that began with Jennifer’s disappearance, noting the family’s growing alarm when her phone was switched off. Ashley Kalembo added:

“They committed the offence with his wife, who also committed suicide, on the day he was arrested. She will fight from the grave.”

A Lethal Ruse For School Fees

Court proceedings have detailed the alleged calculated plot. Prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu presented evidence that Brian Chanachimwe, 34, together with his wife Olipa Chide, planned to murder Jennifer to escape his financial duties.

Prosecutor Jambawu told the Harare Magistrates’ Court:

“The accused persons connived to murder the now deceased after the accused was being pursued to pay US$2,500 (approx. R47,500) child maintenance arrears for his three children with the deceased.”

The court heard that on January 12, Chanachimwe used their children as bait. He allegedly promised Jennifer US$150 (approx. R2,850) for school fees to lure her to his Crowhill home. Prosecutor Jambawu detailed the alleged attack:

“The now deceased was ambushed inside their house by the accused and Olipa Chide who strangled her until she died.”

A Cover-Up Unravels
After the alleged murder, the couple, along with an accomplice named Jonah Nekati who is still at large, worked to hide the crime. They disposed of Jennifer’s personal items and hired a vehicle under false pretences to transport her body.

The case took a further tragic turn on January 21. Olipa Chide, implicated as a co-conspirator, reportedly took her own life at a farm in Gutu as police investigations progressed. Chanachimwe remains in custody and is expected back in court on February 4.

The family’s demand for legal justice remains steadfast. One of Jennifer’s sisters, who asked not to be named, stated plainly:

“We just want justice to prevail, nothing else. We wish the courts to consider our pain as a family.”

KENYA’S EX-DEPUTY PRESIDENT GACHAGUA  ALLEGES ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT IN CHURCH ATTACK

KENYA’S EX-DEPUTY PRESIDENT ALLEGES ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT IN CHURCH ATTACK

PROMINENT Kenyan opposition figure Rigathi Gachagua has alleged there was an attempt on his life during a Sunday church service.

Gachagua, who was sacked as deputy president in an impeachment trial in 2024, claimed in an interview with the BBC that rogue police officers “shot at everybody and tear-gassed the church” in Othaya in the central county of Nyeri.

He had previously accused his former ally President William Ruto of ordering the attack but did not provide any evidence. Ruto has not commented but government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura accused Gachagua of staging the attack.

The police said an investigation had been launched, adding that no injuries had been reported.

Reports to the police indicated that a tear-gas canister had been thrown inside St Peters Anglican Church at 11:00 local time (08:00 GMT) disrupting the service.

Several vehicles were reportedly damaged within the church compound, the police added, appealing for witnesses.

Gachagua, a wealthy businessman from the central Mount Kenya area and now a vocal critic of the president, said he was escorted to safety by his security team.

He had posted photos of the incident on X and alleged to the BBC’s Newsday programme that “armed police officers with AK47s and tear gas descended on the church”.

Gachagua said that after he was helped to safety, the attackers set his car on fire and “mercilessly” beat up those gathered outside the church.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party leader said he has not reported the incident to the relevant authorities “because it is the police who attacked us. You cannot report the police to the police”.

On Monday, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said Gachagua had orchestrated the attack himself.

“Those are staged-managed attacks to seek public sympathy and to whip up emotions,” Mwaura told the BBC.

In an earlier press conference, Gachagua dismissed these allegations, asking: “Where can we get access to tear gas?… Where do we get access to AK-47 assault rifles?”

Murkomen said the police chief had promised him that the attackers would be brought to justice.

“Violence anywhere, and least of all in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” the interior minister said in a post on X.

“The police must move without fear or favour and deal decisively with the sponsors and perpetrators of this act without regard to their status in society or political affiliation.”

According to Kenya’s constitution, Gachagua’s conviction by the senate means he cannot hold public office again.

He had pleaded not guilty to 11 charges of which he was found guilty of five, including inciting ethnic divisions and violating his oath of office.

However the politician, popularly known as Riggy G, maintains he will be on the presidential ballot next year as he is appealing and the Supreme Court has not ruled on his impeachment.

Ruto and Gachagua were elected on a joint ticket in 2022 – and the partnership helped Ruto win by marshalling support in Mount Kenya, the heartland of the Kikuyu people who are the largest voting bloc in Kenya.

Nuclear Weapons Remain the Most Reliable Guarantee of National Sovereignty- Russia’s Dmitry Medvedev

Medvedev: Nuclear Weapons Remain the Most Reliable Guarantee of National Sovereignty

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, has stated that nuclear weapons remain the most reliable means of protecting a state’s sovereignty, underlining Moscow’s continued reliance on nuclear deterrence as the cornerstone of its national security policy.

According to Russian state media and official statements, Medvedev emphasized that no other security mechanism offers the same level of guaranteed protection as nuclear arms, particularly in an era of growing global instability and confrontation between major powers. His remarks align with Russia’s long-standing strategic doctrine, which views nuclear weapons as the ultimate safeguard against threats to the country’s existence.

The statement comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and recurring debates over strategic stability, arms control, and deterrence.

Russian officials have repeatedly argued that nuclear capability is essential for maintaining sovereignty and preventing external coercion, especially as conventional military balances and alliances evolve.

Medvedev’s comments reinforce the Kremlin’s messaging that nuclear deterrence remains central to Russia’s defense posture, and that any erosion of this capability would directly impact national security.

Iran Supplied Russia With Over 350 Fath-Series Ballistic Missiles, Sources Say

Breaking News: Iran Supplied Russia With Over 350 Fath-Series Ballistic Missiles, Sources Say

Iran has transferred more than 350 short-range ballistic missiles from its Fath missile family to Russia, significantly expanding Moscow’s strike capabilities as the war in Ukraine continues, according to information obtained by Ukrainian officials and cited by international media.

According to the report, the missile deliveries include variants of the Fath-360 system, a solid-fuel, road-mobile short-range ballistic missile designed for rapid deployment and high accuracy. Ukrainian intelligence sources stated that the missiles were provided to Russia in multiple shipments and are intended to support sustained strike operations against Ukrainian military and infrastructure targets.

The Fath-360 missile has an estimated range of up to 120 kilometers and is capable of carrying a conventional warhead weighing approximately 150 kilograms. The system is designed for quick launch preparation, making it suitable for high-tempo battlefield use. Analysts note that its relatively compact size allows it to be easily transported and concealed, complicating detection and interception efforts.

Ukrainian officials believe the missile transfer is part of a broader military-technical cooperation framework between Tehran and Moscow, which already includes the supply of Iranian-designed Shahed loitering munitions used extensively by Russian forces. The addition of ballistic missiles represents a further escalation in this cooperation, moving beyond drones into more destructive and harder-to-intercept weapon systems.

The report also indicates that Russian personnel have undergone training related to the operation and maintenance of the Fath missile systems. While it remains unclear whether these missiles have already been deployed operationally, Ukrainian authorities assess that they could be used in frontline regions or against targets near the border due to their limited range.

Western governments have repeatedly accused Iran of providing military assistance to Russia in violation of international norms. Tehran has previously denied supplying ballistic missiles to Moscow, although it has acknowledged defense cooperation with Russia in other areas.

Neither the Russian nor Iranian governments have officially commented on the latest claims.
The development has raised concerns among Ukraine’s partners, as the introduction of additional ballistic missile systems could increase pressure on Ukrainian air defense networks, particularly in areas closer to the front lines.

ANDRÉ ONANA CLARIFIES HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH SAMUEL ETO’O: “WE DO NOT OWE EACH OTHER.

ANDRÉ ONANA CLARIFIES HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH SAMUEL ETO’O: “WE DO NOT OWE EACH OTHER.

In an interview with the English magazine BeeSport, the Cameroonian international goalkeeper André Onana broke his silence to put an end to the persistent controversies surrounding his relationship with Samuel Eto’o.

🗣️ “I don’t know why Cameroonians, certain individuals, and some media outlets have been creating controversies about this for years.”

André Onana is unequivocal:

“I owe nothing to Samuel Eto’o, and Eto’o owes me nothing. Access to his Fundes Sport training center was not free, and I paid all the fees. When I left, the center received a proportional bonus to my transfer fee. I owe him absolutely nothing.”

The Indomitable Lions’ goalkeeper also specifies that Samuel Eto’o played no role in his transfers to Ajax Amsterdam or Inter Milan:

“Contrary to what some people claim, he didn’t negotiate anything. At Inter, he sometimes came to watch the matches because he’s a former player of the club, not because he was managing my transfer.”

Onana insists that he has had his personal manager since he was very young, who is responsible for managing his entire career:

“If I’ve been playing for top clubs for more than six years, it’s thanks to my talent, thanks to God, and to no one else.”

👉 In conclusion, André Onana makes a clear appeal:

“I ask the Cameroonian people and the media to stop these controversies and let me concentrate on my career.”

📌 A firm statement intended to put an end to a recurring debate in Cameroonian sports circles.

Gorimbo fires back at Chivayo and Mahere

Zimbabwean-born professional mixed martial artist Themba Gorimbo has launched a fierce rebuttal against businessman Wicknell Chivayo and former legislator Fadzayi Mahere following public reactions to his recent remarks on CNN, in which he disowned his family and country of birth.

In the interview, Gorimbo said he no longer feels any attachment to Zimbabwe and does not consider himself Zimbabwean. He revealed that he has cut ties with members of his family, some of whom he has blocked on his phone, and stated that he wants his remains cremated and scattered in South Africa’s Kruger National Park.

The interview quickly went viral, sparking heated debate on social media and drawing reactions from high-profile figures.

Chivayo, who has previously clashed with Gorimbo online, reacted scornfully, posting in Shona: “Takagara tazviona hedu kuti irombe iri…” (We had long seen that this one is worthless.)

Gorimbo responded sharply, accusing Chivayo of harassment and questioning his credibility as a businessman. In a lengthy social media post, the UFC fighter told Chivayo to stop attacking him online, saying genuine entrepreneurs do not spend their time chasing gossip on social media or tabloids.

“You can bully other Zimbabweans and buy them but not me,” Gorimbo wrote, adding that while Chivayo may have money, it does not give him authority over others. He also accused the businessman of seeking attention and challenged him to live quietly like global billionaires who focus on their work rather than online spats.

Gorimbo extended his criticism to former Mt Pleasant MP Fadzayi Mahere, popularly known as the “Iron Lady.” Mahere resigned from Parliament less than five months after being elected, citing the alleged takeover of her party, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), by impostors.

On Sunday, Mahere posted on social media: “Zimbabwe is a beautiful nation with amazing people. Given the choice, I’d pick this country over and over.”

Gorimbo appeared to interpret the post as a veiled attack on his decision to distance himself from Zimbabwe. In response, he accused Mahere of hypocrisy, claiming she benefited from the same political system she now criticises. He further alleged that she failed constituents who voted her into office and questioned her contribution to ordinary Zimbabweans.

“What have you actually done for the people of Zimbabwe besides posting confusing statements daily?” Gorimbo wrote, contrasting her record with his own philanthropic efforts, including funding boreholes and community projects.

Gorimbo is Zimbabwe’s first fighter to win a bout in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). His professional record stands at 14 wins and six losses (14-6-0). His most recent fight ended in a unanimous decision loss to Jeremiah Wells on November 1, 2025.

Born in Bikita, Masvingo, Gorimbo endured a difficult childhood, losing both parents by the age of 13. He has previously said he survived through illegal diamond mining and smuggling before fleeing to South Africa, where he worked as a gardener and security guard.

Inspired by the film Never Back Down, Gorimbo pursued mixed martial arts, making his professional debut in 2013. He later became the EFC Welterweight Champion before signing with the UFC.

He gained international attention after revealing that he had just US$7 in his bank account before one of his fights, prompting actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to gift him a house. Gorimbo has also used his fight earnings to fund the construction of a water well in his home village in Zimbabwe, providing clean water to the community—prior to his recent statements distancing himself from his family and country.

The public fallout has further cemented Gorimbo’s reputation as one of Zimbabwe’s most polarising sporting figures, dividing opinion between those who admire his rise from poverty and those who view his latest remarks as a rejection of his roots.

MAKEBI ZULU AND THE POLITICS OF BETRAYAL

MAKEBI ZULU AND THE POLITICS OF BETRAYAL

By Staff Reporter

Makebi Zulu’s political rise is inseparable from the goodwill and protection of the Lungu family. He was trusted, embraced, and elevated through proximity to former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s household—a privilege that gave him relevance and access few enjoyed. Today, that same trust has been repaid with betrayal.

At a time when the Lungu family faces sustained political persecution and isolation, Makebi Zulu has chosen silence, distancing, and self-preservation. Instead of standing firm, he has quietly rebranded himself, feeding off a legacy he now seeks to discard. This is not independence; it is opportunism.

Politics may reward ambition, but it cannot excuse ingratitude. Using people as ladders and kicking them away once convenient is the lowest form of political conduct.

If Makebi Zulu could so easily abandon a family that stood by him when it mattered most, Zambians are right to question where his loyalty would lie when power is at stake.

History is unkind to betrayers. Ambition built on treachery never lasts.

PF Slams the Door on Breakaways as Chaos Frays

🇿🇲 ANALYSIS | PF Slams the Door on Breakaways as Chaos Frays

The Patriotic Front’s Central Committee resolutions issued on today, Monday, January 26, 2026 are a hard reset attempt by the Given Lubinda enclave, at the exact moment Brian Mundubile’s Tonse Alliance move is turning PF’s internal contest into a survival fight.

The first thing PF has done is drawing a red line around identity. The statement “unequivocally dissociates itself from the so-called ‘ECL-PF Movement’” and calls it “a fictitious construct” driven by “rogue and selfish elements.” This is not just semantics. It is a direct message to Tonse Alliance actors who have been marketing an “ECL-PF Movement” as the usable vehicle after Tonse’s internal split, and it is also a warning shot at PF MPs and officials flirting with that platform.

PF then escalates it from politics to discipline. “Any member of the PF who associates with the breakaway illegal Tonse, shall be deemed to have exited their membership” is the clearest threat PF has issued in months. It is designed to force a binary choice for members: stay inside Lubinda’s chain of command or accept you are out. The timing matters because Mundubile has already crossed into a Tonse leadership contest publicly, presenting his filing as an internal democratic process.

There is also a second, quieter message inside these resolutions: PF is trying to reclaim Tonse Alliance itself, not merely distance itself from it. The document repeats, in multiple clauses, that PF remains “the anchor party” under Lubinda, and that actions by the Dan Pule and Zumani Zimba faction are “illegal.” This mirrors earlier PF messaging that Tonse’s rival centre has no authority to “expel” PF from the alliance, even as that faction pushes ahead with a congress timetable.

The contradiction is now structural. PF leaders are headed to Kasama to campaign for a Tonse candidate running on the FDD ticket as the special purpose vehicle, while PF’s own statement tells members to “stay away” from what it calls “illegal Tonse” processes. This paradox is no longer a messaging problem. It is a coordination problem. The public sees one opposition ecosystem, but the paperwork, command, and legitimacy claims point in different directions at the same time.

The fifth section, where PF lists its representatives to the Tonse Council of Leaders, reads like a power map. It places Lubinda at the apex, then anchors the rest of the chain in known PF bigwigs, including Raphael Nakacinda, Miles Sampa, Mumbi Phiri, Chishimba Kambwili, Makebi Zulu, and others. In political terms, that list is the Lubinda enclave reasserting who “counts” as PF inside the Tonse architecture, and who does not. It also signals that PF intends to carry its internal factions into Tonse as a bloc, not as individual free agents.

Mukandila’s follow-up framing sharpens the same line, but with a broader storyline. He argues PF “lost the 2021 elections due to betrayal,” claims a “state-sponsored project” is again “actively at work,” and insists Tonse was created as a “strategic political model intended to rebrand” PF into a “more civil, inclusive” platform. This is PF asking its members to interpret every breakaway as infiltration, not as an organic leadership dispute. Practically, it is a defensive narrative meant to keep the base from drifting to rival centres of authority.

What is not being said is just as loud. These documents do not answer the biggest question hanging over PF’s 2026 prospects: who issues the legally recognized adoption papers and certificates at nomination time, and under what uncontested authority? PF is talking like a party that controls its machinery, yet the broader PF leadership contest and court-linked legitimacy disputes remain unresolved in the public domain, and Mundubile’s move into Tonse is partly driven by that reality.

The other missing piece is political cost. Every new disciplinary threat tightens Lubinda’s grip, but it also increases the probability of more exits by ambitious figures who would rather lose with their own vehicle than be managed by a faction they no longer trust. PF’s own language admits the timeline pressure. It opens adoptions for MPs, mayors, and councillors, and speaks to conference deadlines, but it is doing this while key aspirants are openly questioning the fairness of internal processes.

The net effect is that PF has moved from “contain the crisis” to “declare the battlefield.” The statements are written like mobilisation documents, not reconciliation memos. This can energize a hard base, but it also raises the stakes for anyone sitting on the fence. For Mundubile’s camp, the message is simple: PF is preparing to treat the Tonse chairmanship contest as indiscipline. For Tonse’s rival faction, PF is saying: you cannot inherit Lungu’s political capital by inventing a movement name and calling it continuity.

This week’s test is not just who shouts louder. It is who can keep a coherent chain of command while still contesting elections across contested territory like Kasama, where the “green base” identity is now being challenged from both inside the opposition and from UPND’s steady inroads.

The PF resolutions are a bid to stop the bleeding. Whether they stop it, or simply formalise the split, will depend on what happens next in Tonse’s elective process and PF’s own ability to hold a conference that produces a leader the party can actually move with.
