Unity, Not Fragmentation: A Strategic Imperative for Zambia’s Opposition Ahead of 2026

Unity, Not Fragmentation: A Strategic Imperative for Zambia’s Opposition Ahead of 2026

As Zambia approaches the 2026 general elections, the debate on opposition strategy has gained renewed urgency. In a recent opinion piece, Henry Chilombo of the Citizens First (CF) party rebutted claims that political ambition undermines Zambia’s opposition, asserting that ambition, when anchored in principle and organization, can drive democratic progress. He defended CF’s withdrawal from the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA), which is part of the United Front (UF), as a strategic move to preserve the party’s identity and vision, arguing that genuine unity must be rooted in shared values and policy alignment rather than convenience.

While the logic of principled independence is understandable, a closer examination of Zambia’s political history suggests that fragmentation has consistently weakened the opposition. Since 1991, divided opposition efforts have often allowed the ruling party to secure victory with a minority share of the vote.

The 2016 election exemplifies this dynamic: President Edgar Lungu won with just 50.35%, while opposition votes were split among multiple candidates. This pattern demonstrates that political ambition alone cannot translate into electoral success without a coordinated strategy.

Chilombo highlights the political journeys of figures like Michael Sata and Hakainde Hichilema as examples of ambition leading to eventual success. However, both leaders achieved their victories by building strong, unified parties. Sata’s long path to power was defined by his leadership of a single party, the Patriotic Front (PF), while Hichilema’s 2021 win was facilitated by the UPND Alliance, which consolidated opposition support. CF’s departure from the UKA, while principled, runs counter to this proven strategy of coalition-building.

Furthermore, in a crowded political landscape where numerous parties compete for attention and votes, the proliferation of presidential candidates dilutes opposition influence.

In the 2021 election, 16 candidates contested the presidency, with most securing less than 1% of the vote. In this context, CF’s decision to withdraw from a coalition contributes to fragmentation, potentially weakening the collective ability to mount a credible challenge to the incumbent.

The credibility of leadership also plays a critical role in rallying support. While Harry Kalaba’s political experience is notable, his movement across parties from resigning from the PF to leading the Democratic Party and now founding CF may raise questions about consistency. Political loyalty and reliability often influence voter confidence, particularly in high-stakes elections.

The lessons of Zambia’s political history are clear: unity is not an optional strategy, it is a prerequisite for meaningful opposition success. As the 2026 elections draw near, CF and other opposition actors face a pivotal choice.

Ambition and principle are important, but without collaboration and strategic alliances, the potential for meaningful electoral impact remains limited. For the opposition to present a credible alternative and achieve sustainable political change, a focus on cohesion and shared purpose must take precedence over fragmentation.

Church steps into Lungu  funeral stand-off gives ray of hope …and closure

Church steps into ECL funeral stand-off gives ray of hope
…and closure

Anthony Mukwita wrote –

23 Aug 25

It has been 79 days since Zambia lost its sixth Republican President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, on June 5, 2025. And yet, the nation remains suspended in a state of emotional limbo, neither fully grieving nor healing, as the burial of the late Head of State hangs in a haze of legal and procedural uncertainty.

For the Lungu family, especially former First Lady Esther Lungu, the days since June 5 have been an unimaginable stretch of sorrow. The absence of closure has compounded their grief, turning mourning into a marathon of misery.

The silence of the grave has not yet been granted, and the dignity of farewell remains elusive.
This week, a voice of reason emerged from the pulpit.

The Three Church Mother Bodies—the Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ), Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ), and Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB)—issued a joint statement that struck a chord of compassion and clarity.

“We urge both Government and the family of Dr. Lungu to commence immediate and sincere discussions aimed at resolving the current impasse surrounding his burial,” the statement read.

“Let it be conducted in an atmosphere of peace, unity, and respect.”
Signed by Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Y. Chikoya (CCZ), Bishop Andrew Mwenda (EFZ), and Rev. Fr. Francis Mukosa (ZCCB), the statement is not just a plea—it is a pastoral intervention. It reminds us that Zambia, a Christian nation, must not allow political noise to drown out the sacredness of grief.

The Church has long been a balm in Zambia’s bruised moments. It was the clergy who helped shepherd the nation through the tense transitions of the 1990s.

It was the Church that stood firm during electoral disputes, calling for peace.

And it was President Edgar Lungu himself who institutionalized the National Day of Prayer on October 18—a legacy of spiritual unity that must now be honoured in his passing.

This is not the time for partisan posturing. It is the time to lay down political arms and pick up the tools of reconciliation.

The wishes of the Lungu family must be respected. Zambia must find closure. Not just for the Lungu family alone, but for the soul of the nation. Let Edgar Lungu rest.

We thank the Church for its timely voice and urge other influential institutions—civil society, traditional leaders, and media houses—to emulate this example. Let us speak not to divide, but to heal.

In the end, we are all children of One Zambia, One Nation. And in death, as in life, dignity must prevail.

T STATEMENT BY THREE CHURCH MOTHER BODIES ON FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU’S BURIAL.

Date: Saturday 23rd August 2025.

The Three Church Mother Bodies (CCZ, EFZ, and ZCCB) have taken note of the recent statements issued by Government, the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), and the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) regarding the moratorium on public pronouncements concerning the burial of the late former President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

While Government’s decision may have come later than expected, it nevertheless marks a laudable and significant step towards national healing and the fostering of constructive engagement with the family of the late former President.

We therefore urge both Government and the family of Dr. Lungu to commence immediate and sincere discussions aimed at resolving the current impasse surrounding his burial, in a manner that respects the dignity of the high office he once held as well as the wishes of his family.

It is our earnest hope and prayer as we have guided in our earlier statements, such as on June 19, 2025, and in many others issued through various platforms, both jointly and within the capacities of our respective organizations as Church Mother Bodies that the burial of our former Head of State will be conducted in an atmosphere of peace, unity, and respect, befitting both his service to the nation and the values we hold as a people.

In this regard, we appeal to all Zambians, regardless of political or social affiliation, to refrain from issuing provocative or demeaning statements on this sensitive matter, as such remarks contradict both our cultural values and Christian beliefs.

Let us continue to uphold our longstanding motto: One Zambia, One Nation, and remain united as children of God.

BREAKING NEWS: ‎MANSA MALL OWNER CONSIDERS DEMOLITION OF THE MALL

BREAKING NEWS: ‎MANSA MALL OWNER CONSIDERS DEMOLITION OF THE MALL

This morning, I had a conversation with the Operational Manager of Mansa Mall. The Operational Manager, Mr. Levin’s Situnyama, informed me this morning that the decision to demolish Mansa Mall has been made, after extensive deliberation and consideration of various factors. This decision is necessary due to persistent operational challenges and the current issues affecting the mall.

‎He pointed out that this decision was required due to persistent operational challenges and current issues impacting the mall. Despite endeavors to address these challenges, the company has encountered ongoing demands for additional actions and costs, resulting in significant financial losses. Specifically, substantial expenses were incurred in implementing council and court-recommended measures, only to receive new directives requiring further considerable expenditures. The anchor tenant, Choppies Supermarket, has incurred losses due to spoilage of perishable goods, including fruits and vegetables.‎ He stated, The primary tenant intends to vacate the premises, resulting in a largely vacant mall, considering they occupy three of the 37 operational shops.

He also said, We have experienced numerous challenges during the construction and operational phases, which we have consistently presented to the council. Regrettably, our discussions with the council and provincial administration have not led to meaningful progress or tangible solutions to our operational challenges. Unfortunately, the current circumstances have made it impractical for us to continue operating the mall due to substantial financial losses.

‎He concluded, The current situation, combined with the other challenges we have faced thus far, have led to a point where continuing to operate the mall is no longer viable. In light of this decision, we will be issuing notices to our tenants to vacate the premises. Subsequently, we will proceed with the demolition of the mall.

Kenneth Kaunda allowed the Zambia Police to charge, arrest and prosecute his own son while he was President

First President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda allowed the Zambia Police to charge, arrest and prosecute his own son while he was President.

Lusaka High Court convicted and sentenced  Kambarange Mpundu Kaunda to death.

Zambian president’s son sentenced to hang for murder

Oct. 14, 1991LUSAKA, Zambia – Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda’s son, Kambarange Mpundu Kaunda, was sentenced to death Monday by a Lusaka high court judge for the murder of a young woman in September 1989.

Kaunda, 28, a charter pilot, stood still and composed and raised two fingers in the victory sign of his father’s ruling United National Independence Party, UNIP, as Judge Claver Musumali handed down the sentence.

‘I order that you be hanged by the neck until you are pronounced dead,’ Musumali told Kaunda, stunning the court.

Kaunda’s defense lawyer, Richard Ngenda, immediately told reporters outside the court he would appeal against the sentence.

‘We will fight on,’ Ngenda said.

The sentence comes only three weeks before President Kaunda goes into a crucial presidential election battle with former trade unionist Frederick Chiluba, his toughest political rival in his 27 years as head of state.

President Kaunda was scheduled to leave Zambia Monday afternoon to attend the British Commonwealth summit in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Kambarange Kaunda, one of twins, and fourth born son of the Zambian president, was initially charged with manslaughter but Musumali changed the charge to one of murder.

The judge found Kaunda fired seven shots at a group of people, killing 19-year-old Tabeth Mwanza.

Kaunda pleaded not guilty, insisting he had fired in self-defense when a group of people threatened him and blocked the road he was driving on in a Lusaka suburb.

Musumali rejected Kaunda’s defense in his judgment, saying Kaunda acted with malice aforethought and unlawfully.

‘The accused was not acting in self-defense when he killed Tabeth,’ Musumali said.

The father of the dead woman said he was pleased with the sentence.

‘The sentence is fine. Justice has been done but I think it would be unfair for him to be acquitted by the supreme court (on appeal),’ Elias Mwanza told reporters.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA HAILS CHURCH–GOVERNMENT PARTNERSHIP, URGES UNITY AND DEVELOPMENT

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA HAILS CHURCH–GOVERNMENT PARTNERSHIP, URGES UNITY AND DEVELOPMENT

Mpongwe, Copperbelt — President Hakainde Hichilema has praised the strong partnership between the Church and government, calling on the clergy to remain a beacon of hope and unity in the nation.

Speaking during celebrations to mark 120 years of the Baptist Church’s presence in Lamba land, President Hichilema urged the Church to continue fostering peace, speaking against divisiveness, and guiding society on moral and social issues.

“The Church must remain the mirror of society, provide counsel to those in leadership, and speak out against negative vices such as the abuse of social media. The Church must also help promote youth and women into leadership roles,” President Hichilema said.

The Head of State reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with the Church in driving development. He noted that through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), government is determined to deliver benefits to communities, including the Church.

He highlighted that the fund had been increased from K1.6 million to K36.1 million, and called for part of it to be used for projects such as the drilling of boreholes in Mpongwe to ensure access to clean water.

President Hichilema described the moment as historic, noting that “since 1905, God has been in Lamba land through the missionary work of the Baptist Church, whose legacy has spread across Zambia.”

He commended the Baptist Church for not only spreading the gospel but also for preserving the Lamba language, culture, and heritage.

Despite inheriting a debt-burdened economy, the President outlined his government’s progress, including infrastructure projects such as the Lusaka–Ndola dual carriageway, Sakanya road, and other major works. He also thanked Copperbelt Province for contributing to a bumper harvest, leading to national food surplus.

He further urged the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to ensure farmers are paid promptly and crops stored securely.

The President encouraged the Church to engage in food production as part of enhancing Zambia’s food security, pledging government support in these efforts.

He acknowledged the Baptist Church’s 120-year contribution to education, health, and social development, and urged the Church to continue collaborating with government in national progress.

The President concluded his address with a prayer for God’s blessings on the Church and community, even breaking into a hymn as he ended his remarks.

Meanwhile, Copperbelt Minister Elias Matambo announced on behalf of the President a donation of K1 million to the Baptist Church.

Additional contributions included K300,000 from Cabinet Ministers, among them Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe and Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Chipoka Mulenga, and K50,000 from UPND Deputy Secretary General Getrude Imenda on behalf of the ruling party.

MUUNDA PRAISES HICHILEMA FOR ECONOMIC RECOVERY, INDUSTRIAL GROWTH, AND ENERGY EXPANSION

By Wagon Media | Lusaka – Saturday, 23 August 2025

Aspiring Chawama MP Morgan Muunda has commended President Hakainde Hichilema for his decisive leadership, which is driving Zambia’s economic recovery, reviving key industries, and increasing access to energy and employment opportunities across the nation.

Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, Muunda described the New Dawn administration as “forward-thinking, inclusive, and focused on citizens’ welfare,” adding that Zambians are beginning to witness tangible improvements in their daily lives.

He highlighted the recent drop in diesel prices from K33 to K23, saying it has provided relief for drivers, households, and farmers alike.

Muunda also applauded ZEMA for approving major industrial ventures, including Africa’s largest crude oil processing plant in Ndola, which will use locally-sourced biofuels to reduce fuel imports and create domestic jobs.

On the industrial front, he revealed that Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe is set to restart operations next month after attracting a $300 million investment, while Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ) in Kafue is undergoing a $6.5 billion overhaul expected to generate over 10,000 new jobs.

In energy developments, Muunda noted that the World Bank has released K232 million to support the Tanzania-Zambia power interconnection, which has already created over 3,500 jobs, and that the $7 billion Rural Electrification Project will bring electricity to schools, health centres, and communities across the country.

“This is more than infrastructure—it’s about empowering people,” Muunda said. “Every child, regardless of location, deserves access to electricity and digital tools.”

He urged all Zambians to rally behind President Hichilema’s development agenda and called on opposition figures to prioritize collaboration over political rivalry.

“Real change is underway, and the New Dawn government is open to working with anyone committed to putting Zambia first,” Muunda concluded.

‎KANDEKE REVEALS YO MAPS CONTROL OF BOOMPLAY REVENUE FOR ZAMBIAN ARTISTS

‎Zambian music fans have been left stunned after DJ Kandeke , manager to Zambian superstar Yo Maps , took to Facebook to reveal shocking insights about the local music streaming scene.

According to Kandeke, all revenue generated from Boomplay in Zambia was funneled through Yo Maps’ portal , raising eyebrows across the industry.

‎In his post, DJ Kandeke warned artists to be cautious and not be misled, stating that he possesses evidence confirming the claims. This revelation adds further weight to Yo Maps’ recent confessions about managing around 75 artists on Boomplay without their knowledge.

‎“This is a wake-up call for all Zambian artists,” Kandeke emphasized. “Revenue is being generated, but not everyone is getting their fair share.”

‎The disclosure has sparked debates on artist rights, digital music royalties, and transparency in Zambia’s music industry.

While Yo Maps has been hailed as a pioneer for bringing Boomplay to Zambia, this latest revelation has prompted discussions about ethics, control, and fairness in the digital music era.

ZCSD URGES NGOS TO DISSECT CONTROVERSIAL NGO BILL

ZCSD URGES NGOS TO DISSECT CONTROVERSIAL NGO BILL

Zambia Council for Social Development (ZCSD) Executive Director Leah Mutaba urged NGOs in the WASH sector to take interest in the proposed NGO Bill.

Mutaba warned that it could severely impact the independence and functioning of civil society organisations across Zambia.

She cautioned that the Bill introduces excessive regulations that may overwhelm smaller NGOs, limit grassroots operations, and discourage community participation.

Mutaba emphasised the need for legal frameworks that support, not suppress, civic initiatives and democratic engagement.

She also called for meaningful consultation with the civil society sector in shaping legislation that affects their work.

Mutaba was speaking during a learning event held in Siavonga District, Southern Province.

University of Zambia (UNZA) Senior Law Lecturer Dr. O’Brien Kaaba warned that the proposed NGO Bill could be used to centralise control over civil society and restrict independent operations.

He explained that the government’s ability to determine registration and funding processes without adequate safeguards poses a risk to democratic engagement.

Dr. Kaaba noted that such legislation may open the door for political interference and selective enforcement against critical voices.

He emphasised that any regulation of NGOs must be transparent, proportionate, and consistent with constitutional freedoms.

Dr. Kaaba urged greater involvement of civil society in shaping legal frameworks that affect their role in development and governance.

The event was convened courtesy of the Water Voices United project. The Water Voices United is a transformative four-year project, co-funded by the European Union and Danish People’s Aid and spearheaded by SNV in partnership with the NGO WASH Forum. This initiative aims to enhance the capabilities and synergies among WASH Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Zambia.

By fostering the CSOs’ role in WASH governance, the project supports the Zambian Government’s efforts towards the progressive realisation of the Human Right to Water and Sanitation. Together, we are not just aiming for change; we’re ensuring a sustainable and equitable future where access to clean water and safe sanitation becomes a reality for all.

Lubinda eligible to contest Presidency- PF chair Lady Hakachima

Lubinda eligible to contest Presidency…chair Lady Hakachima

Given Lubinda’s
exemplary leadership has been pivotal in maintaining the unity and cohesion of the Patriotic Front since 2021.

Notwithstanding malicious attempts to diminish his contributions, driven by jealousy of his growing popularity, Lubinda’s unwavering dedication and visionary approach are evident in the party’s stability and growth.

As a seasoned politician with a proven track record, he is eminently eligible to contest any position, including the Presidency.

Zambians should prepare for the possibility of Lubinda succeeding President Hakainde Hichilema as the eighth President of the Republic of Zambia, building on the foundations laid by his predecessor.

At this critical juncture, when Zambia needs unity and strong leadership more than ever before, it is imperative that we rally behind visionary leaders like Given Lubinda.

The PF must remain resolute and focused on its core objectives, recognizing that leadership roles are best suited for experienced individuals like Lubinda who possess the requisite skills, knowledge, and acumen.

Critics who question his eligibility are merely revealing their own biases and lack of understanding of the party’s constitution and Lubinda’s qualifications.

I respectfully urge the international community to engage with Lubinda, listen to his perspectives, and provide support to foster a collaborative environment conducive to Zambia’s development.

Furthermore, I encourage PF women to remain steadfast in their support for the party leadership, leveraging their collective strength to drive positive change.

Under Lubinda’s astute guidance, Zambia can navigate its current challenges, capitalize on emerging opportunities, and emerge stronger, more resilient, and prosperous.

“I’m glad that there is great attempt during this period of the matter that has been adjourned sine die that maybe the two parties can discuss,” he said on his Facebook page.

“We call for responsibility, let us see if the secretary to the cabinet, government statements can be respected.”

He said calling for dialogue while insults and public confrontations continued against the family was counterproductive.

He said government’s temporary suspension of proceedings created an opportunity for meaningful discussions.

Mwamba explained that he was encouraged that efforts were being made to reopen communication between the family and the State following the adjournment of the matter in court.

“It’s up to you and me to exercise responsibility, that’s why I’m not encouraging remarks and talks about that matter,” stated the former ambassador.

He also commended earlier calls by UPND secretary general Batuke Imenda for ruling party members to refrain from discussing the issue.

EMPTY RHETORIC, HARSH REALITY: WHY HICHILEMA’S ’s CALL FOR PRICE REDUCTIONS RINGS HOLLOW – Ephraim Shakafuswa

EMPTY RHETORIC, HARSH REALITY: WHY HICHILEMA’S ’s CALL FOR PRICE REDUCTIONS RINGS HOLLOW

When the President of the Republic stands before the nation and says the prices of locally manufactured goods must now come down, Zambians have every right to ask: based on what? And more importantly: who’s responsible for the conditions that made those prices rise in the first place?

This week’s statement from President Hichilema, following his meeting with the Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM), was polished — but disturbingly disconnected from economic reality. While we welcome genuine engagement with the private sector, the response from government leadership must reflect not only rhetorical aspirations but a grounded, honest assessment of the economic fundamentals

Let us unpack the key issues at stake.

1. What Are the Real Fundamentals Behind Price Reduction?

The President suggests that manufacturers are arbitrarily maintaining high prices “hiding behind old stock.” With respect, this statement oversimplifies and disregards economic realities faced by local producers. Prices in manufacturing are influenced by a basket of inputs:
Cost of raw materials – Many inputs are still imported, and despite recent Kwacha stability, the local currency remains fragile and volatile, having suffered major depreciation over the past two years.

Interest rates With policy rates still high (hovering around 22–24% as of Q3 2025), borrowing remains expensive. Manufacturers finance stock, operations, and expansion on these terms.

Electricity tariffs and load shedding – Energy insecurity, especially for industries like agro-processing and metal fabrication, continues to push up operational costs.

Taxes and compliance burdens – While the President says his government is not a proponent of high taxes, SMEs and local manufacturers still face a disproportionate tax burden, with only foreign corporates seemingly “enjoying” the benefit of tax holidays and customs waivers.
Logistics and infrastructure costs – Poor road conditions, border delays, and inconsistent rail freight services add to the cost of production.

Unless these fundamentals are directly addressed, any call for “price reduction” remains aspirational rather than actionable.

2. Fuel Prices Have Come Down – From Where?

We invite the President to be specific. Fuel prices in Zambia rose dramatically under his watch, reaching record highs in 2023 and early 2024. Any recent reduction is merely a partial correction from those excessive levels.
Consider this: In August 2021, petrol was averaging K17/litre. By mid-2024, it had peaked above K31/litre. Today, it’s around K26–K28/litre, still well above the 2021 baseline.

So, yes, fuel prices have “come down,” but only after going up far more under this government. A call for price reductions must acknowledge this full trajectory, not cherry-pick a recent drop in prices while ignoring the cumulative impact over the last four years.

3. The Taxation Paradox – Who’s Really Bearing the Burden?

The President says “we are not fans of higher taxes.” Yet ordinary Zambians and local entrepreneurs feel a different reality. Who then is carrying the tax load?
Mines, which continue to enjoy generous tax holidays and mineral royalty deductions, contribute far less proportionately than they should, despite booming global prices.
Meanwhile, ZRA pressures local businesses, especially SMEs and family-run enterprises, with audits, penalties, and compliance requirements that large multinationals easily circumvent through legal and accounting manoeuvres.
The Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) burden continues to fall on formal sector workers, while informal sector growth remains unsupported and untaxed.
If this administration is truly against high taxes, then why are relief measures skewed toward foreign capital, while local businesses continue to struggle under the weight of statutory obligations, import duties, and erratic policy implementation?

4. Empty Consultations Without Tangible Action

We support dialogue. We support stakeholder engagement. But let us not confuse consultation for transformation. The ZAM visit to State House is symbolic—but what has it yielded for the struggling medium-sized manufacturer in Ndola, the cashew processor in Mongu, or the agro-packager in Chipata?
The Zambian economy needs more than statements. It needs structural reform.

5. A Vision Grounded in Integrity and Practical Economics

The opposition, under our leadership, is not interested in bitterness or blanket criticism. We are not here to oppose for opposition’s sake. We are here to offer the Zambian people real economic alternatives:

A transparent tax regime that rewards local value addition and supports Zambian entrepreneurs—not just foreign investors.

A targeted industrial policy that reduces reliance on imports through strategic local production incentives.

A stable macroeconomic environment with affordable financing for industry, and not just handshakes at State House.

A fiscal policy that prioritizes productivity over punitive taxation.

The Zambian people are tired of soundbites. They deserve substance. We call on this administration to stop shifting blame to manufacturers, traders, or external factors. Leadership means accepting responsibility for the economic direction of the country and implementing policies that genuinely improve people’s lives.

The opposition stands ready with ideas, facts, and a patriotic vision, not just criticism, but a better path forward.

ZAMBIANS SPEAK OUT: POWER CUTS, JUSTICE FEARS, AND BROKEN TRUST

ZAMBIANS SPEAK OUT: POWER CUTS, JUSTICE FEARS, AND BROKEN TRUST

By Brian Matambo – Lusaka, Zambia

On Friday night’s broadcast of EMV Tonight, the phone lines lit up as Zambians from across the country and diaspora voiced anger over deepening power shortages, selective justice, and what they described as a growing climate of political betrayal.

For nearly three hours, the program shifted between stories of darkness in homes and businesses, outrage over the killing of 22-year-old Enoch Simfukwe in Chisamba, and skepticism toward government directives on the burial of former President Edgar Lungu. The atmosphere was raw, urgent, and defiant.

POWER CRISIS SYMBOLIZES NATIONAL FRUSTRATION
The central theme of the night was Zambia’s electricity crisis. Callers reported enduring as little as 30 minutes of power in 24 hours, while some said entire neighborhoods had gone dark for days. Businesses reliant on refrigeration, welding, or hairdressing have been forced to close, while households spoke of wasted food and shuttered livelihoods.

“I am calling you from darkness right now,” said one listener. “The President once said load-shedding was a failure of leadership. If that was true then, what is it now?”

Technical figures dominated the discussion: Zambia’s installed capacity of 3,800 megawatts against peak consumption of 2,200, and an increased water allocation of 13.5 billion cubic meters from the Zambezi River Authority for 2025, up from 8 billion the year before. Yet load-shedding has intensified.

“Why are we exporting electricity when our people are suffering?” callers asked repeatedly. Some alleged that government-linked companies were profiting from reselling power to neighboring countries while domestic supply collapsed. Others speculated that power was being “reserved” to guarantee stability ahead of the 2026 election.

OUTRAGE OVER ENOCH SIMFUKWE CASE AND SELECTIVE JUSTICE
Beyond energy, the show was dominated by calls demanding justice for 22-year-old Enoch Simfukwe, who was killed on a farm in Chisamba. Listeners questioned why Maria Zaloumis, the farm’s owner, had not been arrested despite video evidence placing her at the scene.

“This government applies two sets of laws,” argued one caller from Lusaka. “If you are close to power, you go free. If you are an ordinary Zambian, you are arrested even when you are innocent.”

The case has inflamed broader concerns about selective justice, with references to the abduction case of Honorable Emmanuel Jay Jay Banda, who accused State House-linked operatives of torturing him, only to face intensified persecution himself after naming his alleged attackers.

Many callers accused police of shielding Zaloumis because of her family ties to senior figures in the Electoral Commission and the National Assembly.

LUNGU BURIAL DISPUTE CASTS SHADOW
The host reminded listeners of government instructions barring public commentary on the dispute surrounding the burial of late President Edgar Lungu. While some callers respected the caution, many said the directive reflected the erosion of trust between state and citizen.

“The environment is toxic,” one contributor said. “There can be no negotiations when the family is insulted daily on state media and their wishes are ignored.”

For many, the unresolved burial issue has become a metaphor for Zambia’s divisions, with Lungu’s supporters framing the matter as part of a wider pattern of disrespect and political persecution.

CALLERS IN HIDING: THE EROSION OF DEMOCRACY
A striking feature of the program was the number of callers who refused to identify themselves, choosing instead to be known simply as “Anonymous.” In a country that once prided itself on open political debate, the anonymity of ordinary citizens calling into a radio show is seen by many as a troubling indicator of fear.

“This is what happens when democracy erodes,” the host remarked. “When people fear being targeted for simply speaking their mind.”

For critics, the reluctance to identify oneself is evidence that the promise of free expression under Zambia’s current leadership has given way to surveillance, intimidation, and retribution.

CALLS FOR UNITY AND CHANGE IN 2026
Despite the anger, the broadcast carried a thread of determination. Diaspora callers from the United Kingdom and South Africa pledged to return home to register and vote in 2026. Several urged opposition parties to unite behind a single candidate, drawing parallels to 1991, when opposition unity ended one-party rule.

“This is Independence 2.0,” said one caller. “We cannot remain in this marriage of lies. We must walk away.”

The broadcast ended with appeals for voter registration, civic vigilance against electoral malpractice, and a call for justice both for Simfukwe and for former First Lady Esther Lungu.

A NATION AT CROSSROADS
The EMV Tonight program revealed a Zambia under pressure: electricity shortages strangling businesses, a justice system accused of protecting elites, and a population increasingly skeptical of official statements.

With just under a year before the 2026 elections, the show captured a sentiment that was both bleak and resolute. The refrain heard most often was not just about electricity, but about trust. “We have been deceived,” callers said. “Now we must decide.”

HH COMMENDS BAPTIST CHURCH FOR MAINTAINING HERITAGE

HH COMMENDS BAPTIST CHURCH FOR MAINTAINING HERITAGE

Mpongwe-23rd August, 2025

By Mukuka Nawa

President Hakainde Hichilema has commenced the Baptist Church in the country for maintaining the national heritage and values for the 120 years it has been in existence.

Speaking when he graced the National Conference for the Baptist Union of Zambia in Mpongwe district today, President Hichilema appreciated the Baptist Church for  their missionary work Since 1905, adding that they have made tremendous contribution in many areas of society in the country spiritually, evangelically and have contributed to the economic growth through their support for the education and health sectors.

The Head of State specifically signed outlined the Church’s commitment to theology, stating that it is a cardinal contribution to the nation, urging them to continue on the same trajectory.

Mr. Hichilema, who made a donation of K1000,000 as a seed to the Church, urged them to speak against disunity in the country, and continue to speak about abuse of others especially through platforms such as social media.

He urged the Baptist to continue breeding and bringing to the fore of leadership women and youths, and not leaving them behind, while calling upon the clergy to advise government leaders, stating that government remains steadfast to harness its support for the Church.

I didn’t spit saliva on journalist, I thought he was a UPND cadre, Katuta tells court

CHIENGI member of parliament and Facebook marriage counselor Given Katuta has denied showering saliva on Times of Zambia photojournalist Henry Chunza, stating she mistook him for a UPND cadre sent to mock her walk of shame.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BJGxg276n/

Katuta is facing charges of common assault and threatening violence after a bizarre July 21, 2023, incident when she was ordered by Speaker Nelly Mutti to take a seven day suspension and walk of shame out of the National Assembly chamber.

In her defence before magistrate Idah Phiri, Katuta painted a picture of a sickly MP limping out of the house with a spine dislocation and a tight skirt restricting her movement.

The 56 year old parliamentarian narrated that on the date in question, she was unwell, nursing a spinal dislocation and dressed in a tight skirt that made movement painful, when she spotted a man with a camera.

Katuta said as she emerged from the chamber, she saw a strange gentleman taking pictures of her from a restricted area.

“To me, he looked like a cadre. He was laughing and taking pictures. No one is allowed to stand there, so I thought it was a UPND cadre mocking me,” said Katuta.

She explained that she pointed at him and demanded that he stops photographing her, but when the man continued laughing, she asked a security officer to intervene.

“I never spat on any journalist. I never threatened anyone. Those stories shocked me when I later saw them online. The time I was going downstairs that gentleman had already gone,” she told the court.

But Katuta’s denial stands in sharp contradiction to the testimonies already laid before the bench.

Chunza earlier told the court that Katuta charged at him like a spitting cobra as soon as she spotted his camera.

He said she hurled Bertha Lungu insults, calling him “we mwana wambwa iwe” (you son of a dog) and spat on him as he tried to escape her wrath down Parliament’s staircase.

“She was on top, I was running down, she leaned over the guard rails and spat on me,” Chunza testified, adding that the ordeal left him traumatised.

Times of Zambia acting chief reporter, Chusa Sichone, backed Chunza’s story, telling the court he watched Katuta lose her temper and spit on his colleague before they rushed to report the incident to the police.

Even a National Assembly security officer, Julius Tembo, confirmed witnessing Katuta spit on the journalist, though he clarified that he never heard her call him a “son of a dog” as claimed.

Tembo likened the incident to a cat and mouse chase, with the MP in hot pursuit of the fleeing journalist while demanding deletion of the pictures.

Katuta, who doubles as a reverend, risks up to five years imprisonment if convicted of the charges.

SABAO HAILS PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S LEADERSHIP, URGES STRONGER PARTY STRUCTURES AHEAD OF 2026

SABAO HAILS PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S LEADERSHIP, URGES STRONGER PARTY STRUCTURES AHEAD OF 2026
Chikankata, Thursday, August 22, 2025

Chikankata Member of Parliament, Jacqueline Sabao, has praised President Hakainde Hichilema for providing the decisive leadership that she says had long been absent in Zambia’s governance.

Speaking during a meeting at shamkan lodge in chikankata Ms. Sabao underscored the importance of intensifying branch formations as the UPND gears up for the 2026 general elections.

“President Hichilema has shown the kind of leadership this country has been yearning for. It is now up to us, at the grassroots, to match that vision with hard work and solid structures,” she said.

Ms. Sabao encouraged party officials and members to remain supportive of the President’s leadership style, noting that the Head of State is committed to ensuring equitable distribution of national resources across all communities.

She also used the platform to reiterate the New Dawn Government’s firm stance against corruption. She urged the public not to sympathise with individuals implicated in the looting of public funds.

Ms. Sabao urged party structures to remain active, united, and focused on mobilising support in their communities to secure a strong mandate for the UPND in 2026.

Laughing in the Dark, Dreaming in the Light:…an Amb Anthony Mukwita insight for the weekend

Laughing in the Dark, Dreaming in the Light:

…an Amb Anthony Mukwita insight for the weekend

23 Aug 25.

They say laughter is the best medicine, unless you’re trying to cure inflation, in which case you’ll need a bit more than a chuckle and a candle during load-shedding.

But here we are, Africa: the continent that invented resilience before the word made it to motivational posters.

From Lusaka’s dusty optimism to Lagos’ traffic-induced enlightenment, we keep moving, sometimes forward, sometimes sideways, but always with style.

Let’s be clear: we’re not celebrating poverty. We’re just refusing to let it steal our punch-lines.

At least I am because while the price of mealie-meal may rise faster than a politician’s promises, our spirit remains stubbornly unbroken, Zambia in particular but also Africa as a whole.

We are the continent that turned ancient kingdoms into empires long before colonialism taught us how to queue for aid.

Great Zimbabwe was a marvel of architecture when Europe was still figuring out indoor plumbing. Timbuktu had libraries while some folks were still drawing stick figures up West.

And now? We sit on minerals so rich they make Wall Street blush, cobalt, copper, lithium, gold. Yet somehow, we export the wealth and import the poverty.

It’s like owning a bakery and starving because you sold all the bread to buy crumbs. But the tide is turning. Slowly. Painfully. Like a ZESCO reconnection. Five hour power day!

In Namibia’s deserts, solar farms bloom. In Kenya’s hills, tech hubs rise. South Africa, battered but unbowed, still dances between despair and defiance. Solar in Chisamba.

And Zambia? Ah, Zambia. We may not have sky-scrapers that touch the clouds, but we have peace that touches the soul. No civil war. No conflict. Just a quiet stubbornness that says, “We’ll get there. Eventually.”

Our youth, oh, the youth! Sixty percent under 25. That’s not a demographic; that’s a revolution waiting to happen. They tweet, they code, they dance, they protest. They are the heartbeat of a continent that refuses to die of old ideas.

Yes, there’s graft. Yes, there’s greed. But there’s also grit. Rwanda digitizes. Botswana stabilizes. Ghana electrifies. Even in the mud, we find diamonds and gold in Mufumbwe—not just in mines, but in minds.

So here I am, Anthony Mukwita aka Tony, laughing in misery, not because it’s funny, but because it’s necessary. Because if we don’t laugh, we cry.

And if we cry too long, we forget how to dream.

Our kids won’t forgive us if we keep selling out their future for per diems and photo ops or fake stats.

Let’s tune our mineral wealth into real wealth. Let’s build, not beg. Let’s unite, not divide. The glass isn’t half empty, it’s refillable.

And Africa? Africa is the bartender with a cheeky grin and a recipe for greatness. It aint over until the fat lady sings so goes the saying.

RESOLVE MAIZE PURCHASING CHALLENGES, HH DIRECTS FRA

President Hakainde Hichilema has directed the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to resolve bottlenecks affecting maize purchases from farmers, in order to ensure a smooth and efficient crop marketing season.

President Hichilema acknowledged the challenges farmers have faced in selling maize to FRA, including the shortage of empty grain bags.

He assured the nation that his administration is working to streamline the crop marketing process.

The President also reassured farmers not to panic, stating that the government intends to purchase all available maize to secure the country’s food supply.

He made these remarks during a meeting with traditional leaders under the Lamba Lima Royal Establishment and leaders of the Baptist Union of Zambia, held on the sidelines of the celebration marking 120 years of the Church’s presence in Zambia.

Lamba Lima Royal Establishment Secretary, Chief Kalukumya, expressed gratitude to the President for upholding Zambia’s status as a Christian nation.

Earlier, Baptist Union Church of Zambia President, Reverend Rodwell Chinyakasa, commended the UPND administration for its achievements—particularly the enhanced Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and the Free Education policy, which he said has eased the burden on many parents.

Man’s secret marriage busted after second wife gave birth at hospital where first wife worked

A man in Singapore has been rumbled for having a secret marriage after his second wife gave birth in the hospital where his first wife works.

While cheating might be fairly common in a lot of relationships around the world, bigamy is another matter entirely.

The act of marrying someone while already married is a criminal offence in nearly every country in the world, and really is a step up from the modern polyamorous partnerships you see online.

So, although the concept of hotwifing or swinging might seem far worse, being caught with two wives or two husbands is a literal crime – and can land you a prison sentence if you’re not careful.

Vaithialingam Muthukumar had been pretty careful with his extramarital activities until he got his second wife pregnant, and she was rushed to hospital to give birth.

After moving to Singapore for work, the Indian national met Salmah Bee Abdul Razak through work, and they entered a relationship, despite him having been married since 2007.

Salmah already knew about Vaithialingam’s marriage, and he promised that he would soon get a divorce, but they married in secret back in 2022, in a move which feels right out of a terrible drama TV show.

Vaithialingam managed to juggle both wives better than Henry VIII, until a fateful day in September 2023, which most men would see as one of the happiest of their lives, as his wife gave birth.

Unfortunately for the 49-year-old, it turned into a bit of a nightmare, as it just so happened that his wife was working at the very same hospital that day. She spotted him emerging from the hospital’s delivery suite, which would be a strange place to see your partner if you weren’t with them.

Instead of coming up with an elaborate lie, he confessed straight away, but it wasn’t until a year later that he ran into issues with the law, as surprisingly it was his second wife, Salmah, who reported him to the police.

Vaithialingam was handed a jail sentence of three months and three weeks after a court date on 21 August, having also been fined a significant amount due to the laws against bigamy in Singapore.

In contrast to London buses, you would imagine that Vaithialingam will soon go from having two wives to having none, after several years of deceit.

Still, I’m not sure if that is better or worse than the woman whose marriage lasted less than 24 hours after she discovered a dark secret about her new husband.

Ghislaine Maxwell claims Prince Andrew photo is ‘fake’ in newly released interview

Ghislaine Maxwell has made a series of claims in a recent interview with the US Justice Department, among them the allegation that a picture of herself, Prince Andrew and Virginia Giuffre was ‘fake’.

The convicted sex offender is currently in prison in the US and was recently moved to a minimum-security facility in Texas. She is serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking crimes related to the case of her paedophile boyfriend, Jeffrey Epstein.

Donald Trump’s government has been mired in controversy over the Epstein files, with the Justice Department declaring earlier this year that there would be no further documents released to the public on the matter.

Figures in the administration have insisted there was no ‘list’ of clients, despite previous claims from Attorney General Pam Bondi that she had just such a list sitting on her desk.

Maxwell was interviewed about the Epstein case last month, and a newly-released transcript of that conversation contains various claims about people accused of having an association with her sex offender ex.

Among the claims she made were that Virginia Giuffre’s account of being paid to have a relationship with Prince Andrew and that he had sex with her at Maxwell’s London home was ‘rubbish’ and ‘mind-blowingly not conceivable’.

The convicted sex offender alleged that she wasn’t the one who introduced Andrew to Epstein and alleged that the image showing her standing with Andrew and Giuffre was ‘literally a fake photo’.

The picture in question is alleged to have been taken in 2001 in Maxwell’s house and shows Prince Andrew with his arm around Giuffre, who would have been 17 at the time, while Maxwell is standing behind them. Giuffre claimed she owned the original and gave it to the FBI.

Giuffre accused Prince Andrew of sexually abusing her in a case that was settled out of court for £12 million. He denied the allegations and, in the settlement, made no admission of guilt.

She died by suicide at the age of 41 earlier this year, leaving behind a message urging people to protect victims of abuse, saying: “Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, and Brothers need to show the battle lines are drawn, and stand together to fight for the future of victims.”

Following her death, her family said it would be a ‘travesty’ if Maxwell was pardoned, calling the idea a ‘slap in the face’ and questioning ‘why are we listening to a known perjurer’.

Maxwell had been charged with lying under oath after denying knowledge of Epstein’s sex trafficking, although the charge was later separated and dropped by prosecutors to focus on the more serious charges of sex trafficking she faced.

Elsewhere in her interview, Maxwell denied that the much-discussed ‘Epstein list’ existed, saying: “There is no list.”

Maxwell said she never witnessed Donald Trump, whom Epstein once described as his ‘closest friend for 10 years’, doing anything inappropriate.

Trump has claimed that pictures of himself together with Epstein were ‘fake news’ and insisted that the birthday letter he allegedly wrote to Epstein telling him ‘may every day be another wonderful secret’ was also fake.

Maxwell said she also did not believe that Epstein killed himself, telling interviewers ‘I do not believe he died by suicide’ but also saying she did ‘not have any reason’ to believe he’d been killed to stop him from talking. She claimed the theory he’d been murdered was ‘ludicrous’, which seems hard to square away with her belief that he didn’t kill himself – unless she thinks he just happened to die of natural causes.

The paedophile officially died by suicide on 10 August, 2019, with recently released CCTV footage appearing to show him being taken to his cell and nobody else approaching.

However, the camera does not provide a direct view of Epstein’s cell door, and there is time missing from the footage, which US officials claim is a standard feature of the camera resetting for a new day, but the absence of information only fuels speculation.

“I was g@y before, during and after marriage” – Reverend Jide Macaulay

Reverend Jide Macaulay has shared a deeply personal story about his experience living as a gay man in a heterosexual marriage.

In his words, he was gay before he got married, gay throughout the seven years of his marriage, and still gay after he finally found the courage to come out.

According to him, marrying a woman never changed who he was — it only forced him to live in fear, under pressure, and in silence.

He revealed that, for many men like him, getting married to the opposite sex wasn’t always a free choice but something heavily influenced by family expectations, religious demands, and cultural pressure.

He explained how living a double life left him burdened with guilt — guilt towards himself for hiding his truth, guilt towards his wife for not being able to love her the way she deserved, and guilt towards society for not fitting in.

Reverend Macaulay said things changed when he relocated to an environment where queerness wasn’t condemned with the same intensity, and he finally embraced his true identity.

“Coming out after marriage was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It caused heartbreak, but it also gave me freedom. I didn’t choose to be gay, but I chose to stop lying about it — and that saved my life,” he shared.

He also pointed out that his story is not unique but represents countless men across the world who were forced into marriages under fear, pressure, and cultural obligation.

Mystery behind ‘Jesus boat’ linked to walking on water miracle explained after being uncovered in Sea of Galilee

A religiously historic vessel was found and retrieved in the Sea of Galilee, and it could have links to one of the most famous Bible stories.

The wooden structure was coined the ‘Jesus Boat’, dating back to the first century, thought to be around the time of Christ himself.

Back in 1986, during a drought which exposed the Sea of Galilee’s shoreline, amateur archaeologists Moshe and Yuval Lufan, from Israel, found some iron nails in the mud while using a metal detector and dug to find an oval wooden shape.

It turned out that it had been buried under the dirt for almost two millennia, as several experts confirmed that it was constructed in Roman times, while radiocarbon dating revealed that it was from the first century exactly.

While the boat was uncovered, rain returned to the area, with a double rainbow appearing – another sign from the Bible suggesting divine intervention.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Biblical archaeologist Danny Herman confirmed: “It’s a 2,000-year-old boat from the Sea of Galilee, the type mentioned in the Gospels, and sized for about 12 people.

“You can actually connect it to one of the most famous stories every Christian knows, the account of Jesus walking on water and calming the storm on the lake.”

His claims were also backed up by fellow archaeologist Dr Kurt Raveh, as the Dutchman explained that the date of construction was any time between the first century BC to the first century AD.

There isn’t any proof that Jesus either saw it or went on it, as he added that 600 boats would have operated on the lake.

The design of the small boat and materials used suggested it belonged to poor fishermen, again linking to the Gospel’s descriptions of Jesus’ disciples.

Speaking of items found on board, Herman said: “The oil lamp found near the boat suggests it was used for a night journey, just like the Gospel story of Jesus calming the sea.”

The story details that Jesus sent his disciples across the Sea of Galilee after feeding 5,000 people, when a storm arose and they struggled to fight against the wind and waves.

Jesus approached them, walking on water, and saved them as they climbed into the boat, and the weather conditions improved.

“They landed at Gennesaret, the ancient name for Ginosar, almost exactly where the boat was found,” Herman said.

When discovered, excavation became a race against time, as a two-year drought meant that the sea’s water levels revealed the mud below, and when winter rains started to resubmerge the vessel, a team, which included the Israel Antiquities Authority, fought to retrieve the structure.

The ancient wood even crumbled when exposed to air, with archaeologists placing it in fibreglass and insulating foam to float it to safety.

It would take years to preserve the boat, as mud had to be replaced with a transparent chemical solution to stop decay and allow visitors to view the structure.

It has been on display at the Yigal Allon Museum in Ginosar, Israel, since 2000.

Herman claimed that ‘it’s not just an archaeological find’, as he believes it is tied to the story of Jesus on the lake.

Chilling update in case of ‘obsessed’ mum who killed husband and children in murder-suicide

An update in the case of a mother who allegedly shot her family before turning the gun on herself has revealed she was ‘obsessed’ with her husband.

On Monday (18 August), it was revealed that the bodies of New Hampshire mum Emily Long, 34, her husband, Ryan Long, 48, Parker Long, 8, and Ryan Long, 6, had been discovered at their family home.

Autopsies later revealed that Ryan died from multiple gunshot wounds, while their children were killed by a single shot to the head.

The couple’s third child, a toddler, was found safe in the family home and is now in a ‘safe environment’ with other family members.

Authorities have since confirmed that Emily shot her husband and children before taking her own life.

A possible motive for the killings is yet to be released.

Numerous TikTok videos created by Emily talking about her family have since been circulating online.

In one video from her now-private account, Emily talks about being ‘obsessed’ with her husband in a video titled ‘Watch me brag about my husband for seven minutes’.

Emily described herself as an ’emotionally driven’ and ‘outspoken’ person who needs to be surrounded by people, while her husband was ‘perfect opposite’ to her.

“I am very outspoken, very impulsive, emotionally driven,” she told the camera.

“I don’t take boundaries very well. And, like, I fly off the cuff in not like a violent way, obviously.

“If I feel something, I am going to say it. Sometimes it gets me into trouble.”

She continued: “He’s always devil’s advocate, as much as it literally kills me.

“He’s so thoughtful in his decisions. He’s the most ethical human on this entire planet. Every single decision he makes is based on his code of ethics.”

Emily went on to reference her husband’s apparent brain cancer battle, revealing the things that scare her the most about him potentially not being there one day.

“But I know how truly, at the end of the day, I am just so scared that all these wonderful things from this phenomenally perfect man, who has given me more than I can ever thank him for, might not be here to see all that,” she added.

“I hope that gives you some insight as to why this is so devastating to me… because he’s literally the best human on this entire planet.”

Meanwhile, police investigating the case in New Hampshire have urged people not to speculate about the family’s deaths.

“While investigators are becoming aware of various concerns/issues ongoing in the household at the time of the event in question, people should avoid speculating that this event was caused by a single reason or stressor,” the update read.

Ghislaine Maxwell drops bombshell claim about Epstein and Princess Diana

Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted accomplice of Jeffrey Epstein, dropped explosive testimony on Friday that Epstein may have gone on a date with Princess Diana.

Maxwell, 63, testified in an interview with the Justice Department last month while serving her sentence for sex trafficking and other offenses. She agreed to participate as part of a DOJ investigation and to address mounting public pressure regarding documents and information about the Epstein case. Maxwell was subsequently transferred to a minimum security prison, unheard of for people convicted of such serious crimes.

In addition to making flattering remarks about President Donald Trump — whom she reportedly hopes will pardon her — The Daily Beast reported Friday she also made an eye-popping claim that Epstein may have been “set up on a date” with Princess Diana in London.

Maxwell said she believed Epstein visited London to meet Diana and attended a major event in the U.K. without her.

“I don’t know if he sat with Diana or he met with Diana and he’d already met her. I don’t know, but this, I believe was organized by Rosa [Monckton],” she said, referring to Diana’s best friend.

She added: “I don’t know if she was being set up as a date for him, maybe because she was… I don’t want to speak bad of Diana, but… I’m not going to do that.”

Aliko Dangote’s wealth surges by almost 100% to $23.9bn

Nigerian business tycoon, Aliko Dangote’s net worth has surged by nearly 100%, reaching an impressive $23.9 billion, Forbes reports.

This leap positions the Nigerian industrialist as the richest person in Africa and the 86th wealthiest individual in the world.

Just last year, Forbes ranked Dangote 144th globally with a net worth of $13.4 billion. The sharp rise in his fortune is largely attributed to his 92.3% stake in the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals.

At 67, Dangote has returned to the top 100 list for the first time since 2018, according to the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires List.

His nearest African rival, Johann Rupert of South Africa, holds the 161st spot with an estimated $14.4 billion. Fellow Nigerian tycoon Mike Adenuga ranks 481st with $6.8 billion.

Dangote’s wealth surge is driven by the operational launch of his landmark $23 billion petroleum refinery—Africa’s largest and one of the biggest globally. Spanning 6,200 acres in the Lekki Free Zone, Lagos, the facility can process up to 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day, ranking seventh worldwide. It also houses a petrochemical complex capable of producing 3 million metric tons of urea annually, making it Africa’s largest fertilizer producer.

Dangote said the refinery is part of a bold vision to industrialize Africa. “We have to build our nation by ourselves. We have to build our continent by ourselves, not rely on foreign investment,” he told Forbes.

Reflecting on the decade-long project, he added:“It was the biggest risk of my life. If this didn’t work, I was dead.”

Lil Nas X to remain in jail till Monday after arrest for assaulting a police officer

American rapper Lil Nas X is set to spend the entire weekend behind bars after being arrested for battery on a police officer and hospitalised over a possible overdose.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the 26-year-old cannot be released on citation because of the seriousness of the charge he is facing. He must appear before a judge on Monday before bail can even be considered.

Pollice say the charge falls under Penal Code 69 (a) PC, which means he is accused of using force or violence to resist or stop an officer from carrying out their duty, Daily Mail reports.

The arrest happened early Thursday morning after the “Old Town Road” star was spotted behaving erratically on Ventura Boulevard. Witnesses said he was walking in the middle of the street wearing only underwear and cowboy boots, singing, talking about a party and striking poses.

Things escalated when officers arrived at the scene, and Lil Nas X allegedly charged at them. He was restrained, taken to hospital for a possible overdose, and later booked for battery on a police officer.

Reports also claim his family is deeply worried about his recent behaviour and are considering staging an intervention.

He will remain in custody until his court hearing on Monday when his bail conditions will be set.

American rapper, entrepreneur, and music mogul Sean “Jay-Z” Carter has officially been named the world’s richest musician, according to Forbes, with a staggering net worth of $2.5 billion.

These include Roc Nation, his globally recognized entertainment company; Armand de Brignac (Ace of Spades), a luxury champagne brand; and D’Ussé, a premium cognac label.

He has also earned significant returns from the sale of his music streaming platform Tidal, along with the Rocawear fashion brand, which helped cement his status as a business visionary. Beyond these, Jay-Z’s portfolio spans real estate, hospitality, technology, and various startup investments, solidifying his reputation as one of the most successful business minds in the entertainment world.

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift continues to hold her spot as the richest female musician, with a net worth of $1.6 billion. Remarkably, Forbes notes that Swift achieved billionaire status solely through her music and tours, making her a standout in the industry for generating such immense wealth through artistic talent alone.

‘Not what I voted for!’ MAGA fans slam Trump’s latest ‘socialist’ move

On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. government was now a part-owner of a major publicly traded tech company. The reaction among his base was less than enthusiastic.

Trump announced via his Truth Social platform that as of Friday the U.S. is a multibillion-dollar shareholder in Intel as part of an agreement with CEO Lip-Bu Tan — with the U.S. supposedly paying nothing for its new stake. The announcement notably came roughly two weeks after Trump’s angry social media tirade against Tan, in which he demanded that Tan “resign immediately” from his role due to his investments in Chinese tech companies.

“It is my Great Honor to report that the United States of America now fully owns and controls 10% of INTEL, a Great American Company that has an even more incredible future,” Trump wrote in his signature style of oddly placed capital letters. “I negotiated this Deal with Lip-Bu Tan, the Highly Respected Chief Executive Officer of the Company. The United States paid nothing for these Shares, and the Shares are now valued at approximately $11 Billion Dollars. This is a great Deal for America and, also, a great Deal for INTEL. Building leading edge Semiconductors and Chips, which is what INTEL does, is fundamental to the future of our Nation. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

While some of the responses to the Trump administration’s post on X announcing the news were complimentary, many replies were deeply critical of the government taking ownership of a private company. One user who described themselves in their bio as a “Constitutional Conservative” wrote: “Not what I voted for. I voted against this specifically.” Conservative podcast host @amandatalks_ tweeted: “ngl [not gonna lie] don’t love this guys.”

“I’m a Republican but I do not agree with this,” another user posted. “Government and privately owned businesses should not mix.”

“Governments shouldn’t own private business,” tweeted retired Naval officer Mike Rodman.
