TONSE ALLIANCE ACCUSES PRISON OFFICIALS OF BLOCKING ACCESS TO PF INCARCERATED MEMBERS

TONSE ALLIANCE ACCUSES PRISON OFFICIALS OF BLOCKING ACCESS TO PF INCARCERATED MEMBERS

By: Sun FM TV Reporter

The opposition Tonse Alliance has publicly accused officials at Mwembeshi Maximum Correctional Facility in Chilanga District of deliberately denying them access to incarcerated Patriotic Front (PF) members, referring to them as political detainees.

Acting Alliance Chairperson Mr. Given Lubinda, who led a delegation to the facility, expressed strong disapproval of the prison authorities’ actions. He described the move as undemocratic and a violation of basic human rights.

Other leaders within the Tonse Alliance echoed Lubinda’s concerns, labelling the incident a direct attack on democratic values and a restriction of the opposition’s right to monitor and support its members.

The group has since demanded accountability from correctional officials and called on relevant government institutions to intervene and safeguard political freedoms.

ACTIVIST WARNS AGAINST “DANGEROUS” LANDS AND DEEDS AMENDMENT BILL

ACTIVIST WARNS AGAINST “DANGEROUS” LANDS AND DEEDS AMENDMENT BILL

Lusaka… Friday July 25, 2025 – Political activist and Socialist Party member Mr. Thompson Luzendi has issued a stern warning against the proposed Lands and Deeds Registry (Amendment) Bill of 2025, describing it as one of the most dangerous legislative proposals in Zambia’s recent history.

In a statement, Mr. Luzendi alleged that the bill–currently before Parliament as National Assembly Bill (NAB) 13 of 2025–seeks to grant sweeping and unchecked powers to the Chief Registrar to cancel Certificates of Title without due judicial process.

He said that the bill, if enacted, would undermine constitutional protections, property rights, and the rule of law.

According to Mr. Luzendi, the amendment would allow the Chief Registrar to unilaterally cancel a title on grounds such as error, fraud, or illegality, all without requiring court involvement.

He argued that this transfer of power to a single government official represented a dangerous departure from Sections 33 and 34 of the current Lands and Deeds Registry Act, which require such matters to be resolved in court.

He further expressed concern that the proposed legislation had faced widespread opposition from legal experts, civil society organizations, and land rights advocates.

Despite this, he asserted, the government had shown disregard for public opinion by continuing to advance the bill.

Mr. Luzendi also criticized a specific provision in the bill that would allow the Chief Registrar to cancel a certificate if the holder failed to respond to a cancellation notice within 30 days.

He warned that this could be particularly harmful to rural populations with limited access to legal resources, stating that such communities might lose their land without ever knowing it was under threat.

He stated that the bill violated Article 16 of the Zambian Constitution, which protects citizens from arbitrary deprivation of property.

According to him, requiring appeals to go through a Minister–rather than the courts–would politicize land issues and deny affected individuals the right to a fair and independent hearing.

In his remarks, Mr. Luzendi cautioned that the bill could be used to facilitate land grabs by politically connected individuals.

He described the proposed law as a tool for legalizing land dispossession and voiced fears of increased corruption and victimization of vulnerable landowners.

He pointed out that professional bodies, including the Law Association of Zambia, and prominent legal figures such as Dickson Jere, had all raised alarms about the amendment’s potential to erode investor confidence and destabilize the land sector.

Parliamentary committees, he added, had been urged to reject the bill in full.

Despite this growing criticism, Mr. Luzendi claimed the government appeared determined to pass the legislation, leading him to question the true motives behind the bill.

He suggested that the aim might not be land reform, but rather land control, warning that it would centralize power in the hands of a few at the expense of the broader population.

Calling on Parliament to reject the bill and on citizens to remain vigilant, Mr. Luzendi concluded his statement by asserting that land is not merely a resource but a matter of life and identity for many Zambians.

“This bill is a threat to land and life. It must be withdrawn,” he emphasized.

GOVERNMENT REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO BUYING MAIZE ACROSS THE COUNTRY

GOVERNMENT REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO BUYING MAIZE ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

Lavushimanda, July 25, 2025 — The government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to purchasing maize from farmers across Zambia through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).

During his visit to the FRA depot in Chiundaponde, Commerce, Trade, and Industry Minister Chipoka Mulenga addressed concerns that the government lacked funds to buy maize.

He clarified that funds were secured before the harvest season began and that the delay in purchasing was only due to moisture content levels in the maize.

The Minister emphasized that the government stands ready to support farmers by ensuring timely purchase and payment for their produce.

He noted that small-scale farmers were the backbone of the 2024–2025 maize production cycle.

Mr. Mulenga revealed that farmers who delivered their maize in Chiundaponde on July 18 have already received their payments.

He hailed this development as a significant improvement in the government’s maize marketing and payment process.

The Minister encouraged farmers to sell their maize to the FRA to help boost national food security.

He underscored that the FRA acts as the country’s food reserve in case of a national food crisis.

Mr. Mulenga further highlighted that farmers are motivated by the attractive purchase price of ZMW 340 per 50kg bag.

This FRA price is uniform across all the agency’s more than 1,400 satellite depots countrywide.

DATA IS THE NEW OIL — BUT AFRICA MUST OWN THE WELLS – Prof. DR. MIRJAM

DATA IS THE NEW OIL — BUT AFRICA MUST OWN THE WELLS – Prof. DR. MIRJAM

By Grant Choonya

Midrand, South Africa – 25th July 2025

Prof. Dr. Mirjam van Reisen issued a resounding call for Africa to seize control of its digital future. Her message was clear: Africa must not become a digital colony.

Speaking under the theme “Building a Continental Framework for AI, Data Sovereignty, and Responsible Digital Innovation,” Prof. van Reisen urged African leaders to establish a decentralized, ethical, and inclusive digital architecture that reflects the continent’s values and protects its resources — especially data.

“Without control over the data, Africa is in danger of entering a new age of colonialism,” warned Prof. van Reisen, referencing the silent extraction of African digital data by foreign tech giants without consent, compensation, or oversight.

The Promise and Peril of AI in Africa

Artificial Intelligence (AI), she explained, is no longer an abstract concept. From search engines to mobile applications, AI is deeply embedded in African economies and societies. With estimates projecting a $3 trillion boost to Africa’s GDP by 2030 through AI, the stakes could not be higher.

Yet the continent faces a double-edged sword. While 40% of African organizations already use AI, significant gaps remain in data ownership, representation, and protection.

“Who owns the data? Where is it stored? Are African populations represented in datasets? These are not technical questions — they are political, economic, and ethical questions,” she said.

From “World Wide Web” to “Woods Wide Web”

In a poetic analogy, Prof. van Reisen compared digital decentralization to ancient traditions of community gatherings under trees — from German villages to chieftainships in Masvingo, Zimbabwe. She invoked the idea of the “Woods Wide Web”, a natural, underground network through which trees communicate — likening it to the decentralized web, a model for ethical AI through edge computing and federated data architectures.

“Let us hold our digital conversations under our trees — in our homes, families, regions, and nations — not through centralised platforms we do not control,” she said.

Africa’s Legal and Scientific Pioneering

Far from being passive observers, Prof. van Reisen celebrated Africa’s early leadership on data regulation. She highlighted the Malabo Convention on Cybersecurity and Personal Data Protection, adopted in 2014, which predated Europe’s GDPR.

She also praised local initiatives like:

Africa University Network on FAIR Open Science

Africa Academy of Science

VODAN-Africa (pioneering decentralized patient data)

Africa Health Data Space

These efforts emphasize FAIR-OLR data principles: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable – with Ownership in Locale under Regulatory compliance.

Prof. van Reisen stressed that in today’s economy, data is the primary raw material powering global tech firms like Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta. Yet Africa often provides this resource freely and invisibly, without regulation or return.

“AI producers should pay for African data. Since it is an African resource,” she asserted.

She warned that ceding control over digital data could cost Africa its sovereignty over its culture, economy, politics, and identity.

A Call to Action

To secure a digital future that uplifts rather than exploits, Prof. van Reisen urged the Pan-African Parliament to:

1. Champion data autonomy and ethical AI

2. Recognize Africa’s cultural and linguistic diversity as a strength

3. Ensure local communities benefit economically and socially from data and innovation

4. Promote a decentralized, inclusive, and accountable digital framework

She concluded with a stirring reminder that Africa, having fought and won the battle against colonialism, is uniquely positioned to lead the world out of digital colonialism.

“Let this be the first continent to be fully data sovereign. Let this be the era of African Intelligence.”

VIDEO: Rick Ross Blasts 50 Cent For Insinuating He’s Gay

Rick Ross has blasted 50 Cent after his longtime rival insinuated that he was gay.

In a since deleted Instagram post, 50 referenced a viral clip of Rozay with his arms around an unknown person on a yacht.

Fif wrote: “Ya man was looking real saucy kissing that boy on that boat! Thats not AI.”

Ross quickly hit back at 50, saying on Instagram Live that the person in the video was a “Black, beautiful woman.”

https://twitter.com/2Cool2Blog/status/1948108296944013530?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1948108296944013530%7Ctwgr%5E3a3322bea6f0c6f3960ca952d7727c8da4504163%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fhiphopdx.com%2Fnews%2Frick-ross-blasts-50-cent-insinuating-gay%2F

The Maybach Music Group head then said: “You’re so infatuated with my lifestyle. You see me out on a yacht with a Black, beautiful woman, and I hope you don’t have anything against Black, beautiful women, Curtis. I mean, what are you insinuating here?”

Rozay then taunted 50 over his alleged links to Diddy’s freak offs as some have claimed that one of the anonymous people that testified against the music mogul is his baby mama,

Ross said: “We know you just had your heart shattered when you found out what we found out, we all found out together. We know that’s the mother of your youngest son. You gotta give a beautiful Black woman the opportunity, Curtis. We know you may have been hurt. You a hurt hoe. but get over it, man. Enjoy your glass of fine bubbles, and move on in life. Be happy.”

Ross recently took one of his most vicious shots at 50, referencing his deceased mother.

In a video rant, the “B.M.F.” rapper said: “I know you wanna make your momma one of them walking stars they put down there. Fuck how your momma live, n-gga. Make her her own walking star.”

Ross’ tirade did not end there as he also threatened to buy Fif’s master recordings.

“50, who owns your masters? I’ll buy your masters,” he sneered. “You better shut up. I will buy your masters.”

He went on to mock 50’s attempts to build a movie studio in Shreveport: “But look, 50. Boy, I see you struggling making that G-Unit Film Studio out there in Louisiana where the cheapest land at. You thought you was gon’ be able to do it and get them loans.”

‘I Wanted Him To Suffer’ – SA Teacher Kills Stepdaughter, 4, To Fix Husband For Cheating On Her

SA Teacher Confesses To Killing Stepdaughter To Get Back At Cheating Husband
A South African woman has stunned the nation after admitting in court that she drowned her four-year-old stepdaughter to “punish” her husband for cheating.

Amber Lee Hughes, a 25-year-old preschool teacher from Gauteng, stood before the High Court in Johannesburg and calmly confessed to killing the child — who was not only her stepdaughter but also one of her learners at school.

The little girl, Nada-Jane Challita, was just four years old.

Hughes told the court she acted out of raw pain and rage following a heated confrontation with the girl’s father over his infidelity. Her words were chilling, and her motive was clear:

“I wanted him to suffer.”

She said she was fully aware of what she was doing when she took the child’s life, even though she had been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. The confession came as part of supplementary admissions submitted after Hughes changed legal teams.

The State and defence had already argued the merits of the case, but her new team brought forward the startling new admissions ahead of closing arguments.

‘I drowned her after the argument’
In court, Hughes described what led to the tragic act.

“We had a terrible fight. He admitted everything. I felt betrayed and worthless,”
she said softly.

“I just couldn’t take it anymore. I drowned her. I knew it would destroy him. That’s what I wanted.”

Her voice reportedly wavered as she spoke about multiple suicide attempts following the incident. But despite her struggles, she insisted she was in control of her actions.

“I didn’t black out. I didn’t lose my mind. I knew what I was doing,”
she told the judge.

Hughes said she later tried to end her life more than once but failed.

“I didn’t want to live after that. I tried… I really tried,”
she added.

Denies rape charges
While Hughes accepted full responsibility for the murder, she denied any involvement in the sexual abuse allegations that are also part of the case.

“I have no idea where those rape charges are coming from,”
she said.
“I never did that. I never touched her like that.”

These remarks were included in her formal admissions, which have now added a shocking twist to an already disturbing case.

Closing arguments next month
The High Court has postponed the case to 7 August 2025 to allow both sides to prepare closing arguments based on the new developments. Hughes remains in custody.

The case was first reported on X by Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (@CrimeWatch_RSA), who wrote:

“Preschool teacher, Amber Lee Hughes (25), charged with two counts of rape and murder of her learner and stepdaughter, Nada-Jane Challita (4), submitted supplementary admissions…”

South Africans have reacted with a mix of horror and heartbreak, with many social media users calling the crime “unthinkable”.

Nada-Jane’s short life was cruelly cut short by someone who should have protected her.

And her father, still grieving, now has to face a courtroom where the woman he loved admitted to taking his daughter’s life — just to make him feel pain.

Nomcebo Zikode ordered to pay millions after latest ‘Jerusalema’ court defeat

Nomcebo Zikode ordered to pay millions after latest ‘Jerusalema’ court defeat

Grammy-winning singer Nomcebo Zikode has suffered another blow in her ongoing legal battle with Open Mic Productions after the Pretoria High Court dismissed her application for leave to appeal on July 24, 2025.

Zikode, who claims she hasn’t received royalties for her vocals on the global hit Jerusalema, had hoped to challenge a May ruling that forced her to complete two albums before terminating her contract. That ruling also ordered her to pay R1.5 million in legal fees to the label.

Judge Graham Moshoana found Zikode’s appeal had “no reasonable prospects of success” and ordered her to cover another additional legal costs.

In response, Zikode called the judgment “deeply troubling” and vowed to continue fighting for fairness in the music industry. Her legal team is reportedly considering further appeals.

Open Mic Productions welcomed the ruling, with managing director Lionel Jamela insisting the label had “invested heavily” in Zikode and accused her of seeking undue ownership of Jerusalema.

The case has sparked fierce debate on social media about artist rights and exploitative contracts. Despite the court loss, Zikode says she remains committed to her music.

Zuma’s Party Demands Secret Ballot for No-Confidence Vote in President Cyril Ramaphosa

The MK Party has urged National Assembly (NA) Speaker Thoko Didiza to implement a secret ballot for its motion of no-confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa. The motion, filed on Tuesday, criticises Ramaphosa’s administration for governance failures, including high crime rates, economic challenges, and national security issues.

In a letter sent on Thursday, MK Party parliamentary leader John Hlophe outlined three reasons for the request. He argued that a secret ballot would allow MPs to vote freely without fear of intimidation or reprisals from their parties, given the motion’s sensitive nature and potential political consequences.

Hlophe also cited a 2017 Constitutional Court ruling in the United Democratic Movement case, which confirmed the speaker’s discretion to allow secret ballots. Additionally, he emphasised that a secret ballot would ensure the integrity of the voting process, reflecting the true will of NA members.

The request comes as the MK Party seeks to protect MPs from external pressures when the motion is debated and voted on in the National Assembly.

Trump signs executive order making it easier to remove homeless people from the streets

0

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that seeks to overhaul the way the U.S. manages homelessness.

The order signed Thursday, July 24, calls for changes to make it easier for states and cities to remove outdoor encampments and get people into mental health or addiction treatment. That includes involuntary civil commitment for those “who are a risk to themselves or others.”

“Endemic vagrancy, disorderly behavior, sudden confrontations, and violent attacks have made our cities unsafe,” the order states.

The White House action also seeks to shift federal funding away from longtime policies that sought to get homeless people into housing first, and then offer treatment. Instead, it calls for prioritizing money for programs that require sobriety and treatment, and for cities that enforce homeless camping bans.

It also directs the departments of Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, and Transportation to assess federal grant programs and prioritize places that actively crack down on illicit drug use, urban camping and loitering, and urban squatting “to the maximum extent permitted by law.”

Critics said the sweeping action does nothing to solve homelessness, and could make it worse.

“This executive order is forcing people to choose between compassionate data driven approaches like housing, or treating it like a crime to have a mental illness or be homeless,” said Jesse Rabinowitz with the National Homelessness Law Center

“Institutionalizing people with mental illness, including those experiencing homelessness, is not a dignified, safe, or evidence-based way to serve people’s needs,” Ann Oliva with the National Alliance to End Homelessness said in a statement.

Trump’s order also calls on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to defund addiction programs that include “harm reduction.” This is certain to disrupt frontline health care programs that work to reduce overdoses from fentanyl and other street drugs.

Thursday’s White House action builds on a landmark Supreme Court ruling last year that said cities can punish people for sleeping outside even if they have nowhere else to go. Since the high court ruling, well over 100 cities across more than two dozen states have passed or strengthened bans on homeless camping.

South Africa’s GNU Finally Passes Budget

South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU) has overcome a turbulent process to pass the national budget in the National Assembly, a crucial test of its coalition dynamics. The budget’s approval, delayed by two failed attempts, underscores the challenges of coalition governance, with the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party’s inconsistent voting adding to the complexity.

The MK Party, led by Jacob Zuma, initially rejected all departmental budget votes but caused confusion by voting in favor of the final Appropriation Bill on July 23, 2025. Chief Whip Colleen Makhubele later admitted to a misunderstanding, claiming she thought the vote concerned another matter. The party then reversed its stance, formally opposing the bill, marking two vote changes in the process.

The delays have pushed the medium-term budget policy statement (MTBPS) closer, raising concerns among coalition partners about repeating the protracted process. Democratic Alliance (DA) finance spokesperson Mark Burke highlighted the party’s limited influence, with only six ministers, but stressed its push for market-friendly policies to drive growth. “It is only because the DA is in this government that the markets still think this government is being fiscally responsible,” he said.

Burke warned that without such policies, South Africa’s 0.1% economic growth risks tipping into recession, especially as citizens draw on retirement savings to cope with economic pressures. As the MTBPS looms, the GNU must navigate internal tensions and the MK Party’s erratic participation to ensure smoother fiscal processes.

Chris Hayes skewers MAGA plot to ally with Epstein accomplice to ‘rehab’ Trump’s image

MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes tore into MAGA influencers attempting to use the potential testimony of deceased sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s convicted accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, to build a narrative that excuses President Donald Trump’s involvement in the scandal.

Hayes noted commentator Greg Kelly from the right-wing channel Newsmax, who said of Maxwell, “She just might be a victim. She just might be. There was a rush to judgment.”

That framing, Hayes argued, represents a stunning reversal.

“After years of claiming that Epstein was the devil himself and the center of this evil, widespread global conspiracy that preyed on young girls, the right-wing propaganda machine is so desperate for Trump to find cover in this scandal, they are now painting Ghislaine Maxwell as an ally, as more of a victim than the hundreds of girls that she helped Epstein prey on, some of whom she assaulted herself,” said Hayes.

He pointed to harrowing accounts from survivors.

“Some of them and their lawyers spoke out in a recent Netflix documentary, and a warning, viewers, what they said is disturbing.”

One survivor, reflecting on Maxwell’s role, said bluntly: “I think Jeffrey Epstein is the undisputed most prolific sexual predator of all time. But without Ghislaine’s help, he could never have pulled off such an elaborate scheme.”

Another described a deeply uncomfortable encounter.

“Once I was on my back and she had pulled the sheet down, she touched my breasts and I felt very uncomfortable.”

Yet another said, “He then asked me to do things while I was massaging Jeffrey. And I said I didn’t feel comfortable. And she’s like, well, why wouldn’t you? It’s just part of the body. This is what a man needs in order to have a complete massage. And I just felt as though I couldn’t say no.”

“She was making me question myself so that she and Jeffrey could use me for their purposes,” said a fourth.

“The woman that they’re talking about is who MAGA World now hopes will do a deal to rehabilitate Donald Trump’s reputation, a woman that Trump’s own DOJ said back in 2020 was an inveterate liar, who not only recruited girls for Epstein’s abuse but was present when he committed multiple sexual acts against those girls,” said Hayes. “Virtually everything Epstein was charged with doing when he died, Maxwell was actually convicted of doing.”

Hayes pulled no punches, skewering the effort to rehabilitate Maxwell’s image.

“The one thing that has become crystal clear throughout this scandal is that there’s only one person alive who has intimate knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes and his contacts, who was an accomplice in those actions,” Hayes concluded. “And the Trump administration … may try to spring her from prison if they like the story she tells.”

Meek Mill Comments On Hunter Biden Describing How Crack Cocaine Works

Meek Mill has offered his opinion on a viral video of Hunter Biden explaining how crack cocaine works.

In the widely shared clip, the son of Joe Biden, who is a recovering drug addict, says: “The only difference between crack cocaine and cocaine is sodium bicarbonate and water and heat. I feel really reluctant to kind of have some euphoric discussion. I know you’re not asking me to do that… I’m saying, I don’t want to have the experience of some euphoric recall. That’s how powerful crack cocaine is.”

He adds: “When you make crack, what you’re doing is you’re burning off all the impurities so that it combines with the sodium bicarbonate which makes it smokable. That’s all. This is like a PSA. If you want to completely utterly fuck up your life. You know, I don’t think that anything is necessarily, ‘Oh, you do it once, you’re addicted,’ but there’s about the closest thing that statement could be true would be with crack cocaine.”

Meek Mill was among those reacting to the video with the Philadelphia rapper commenting: “Once you see what that crack can do to a human soul you would never sniff coke or touch it… They got a tutorial on cooking crack is wild tho!”

The “Dreams & Nightmares” rapper recently reiterated that he did not have a sexual relationship with Diddy and never attended any of his freak offs.

He said: “When I come around from Philadelphia, I always come around with three, four people. I’ve never been in these types of environments without my guys around. A lot of people, they said sex parties. I attended New Year’s parties. I never attended [Diddy’s] white parties.

“It’s kind of suspicious to me that none of those people from the Black community never spoke up and said those parties they went to wasn’t straight freak offs. I can just say, for me, I would never step in anywhere that I see anything that doesn’t align with my morals.”

Meek went on to say: “I’m being literally up front about it, talking about it in the open while [Diddy’s] on federal trial to make it known that I am not affiliated with Puff Daddy’s sexual life or personal life and never have been.”

Kristin Cabot resigns from Astronomer more than a week after being caught with CEO in Coldplay kiss cam scandal

Astronomer HR Kristin Cabot resigned Thursday, July 24, from the tech company more than a week after she was caught on camera canoodling with CEO Andy Byron on a Coldplay concert “kiss cam.”

“I can confirm that Kristin Cabot is no longer with Astronomer. She has resigned,” a rep from the New York firm told The Post.

TMZ was first to report her exit from the company.

Byron, who was caught cozying up to Cabot at the show outside Boston last Wednesday, was forced to resign from the AI company over the weekend after the caught-on-camera cheating scandal exploded into a social media frenzy.

Cabot has served as the company’s chief people officer, also known as the head of HR, since November 2024.

The couple’s office tryst was put on blast when the Gillette Stadium jumbotron suddenly panned to them, prompting the them to frantically duck out of view as they scrambled to hide their faces.

Both are married to different people and after the scandal, they were swiftly placed on leave, with the company launching a formal investigation into the alleged affair.

France to recognize State of Palestine at UN Assembly

French President, Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will formally recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September, a landmark move by one of Europe’s most influential nations.

According to an AFP tally, at least 142 countries now recognize or plan to recognize Palestinian statehood. However, the United States and Israel strongly oppose these efforts.

Macron’s declaration comes as international pressure mounts over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza following Israel’s military campaign, which began in response to the October 7, 2023 attacks.

Israel swiftly condemned France’s position. Deputy Prime Minister Yariv Levin called it a “shameless decision” and claimed it amounts to “direct aid to terrorism.”

In contrast, Palestinian Authority official Hussein al-Sheikh welcomed the announcement, calling it a “commitment to international law” and the right of Palestinians to self-determination.

In a statement posted on social media, Macron emphasized that the “urgent priority today is to end the war in Gaza and rescue the civilian population.”

He stressed the need to “finally build the State of Palestine,” under conditions that include demilitarization and mutual recognition with Israel to ensure regional security.

France’s decision follows similar recognitions by Norway, Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, and several non-European nations.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to consult with leaders from France and Germany in further efforts toward a ceasefire that could eventually lead to broader recognition of Palestine.

The Gaza conflict has taken a heavy toll. As of now, Israel’s military campaign has reportedly killed over 59,000 Palestinians mostly civilians according to Gaza’s health ministry.

The October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel claimed the lives of 1,219 people, also primarily civilians.

Columbia University has agreed to pay more than $220 million in a settlement with the Trump administration

Columbia University has agreed to pay more than $220 million in a settlement with the Trump administration, ending months of tense negotiations and paving the way for the restoration of federal funding to the Ivy League institution.

The agreement resolves multiple federal investigations into Columbia’s alleged violations of anti-discrimination laws. While the university did not admit to any wrongdoing, it will pay $200 million over three years to the U.S. government and an additional $21 million to settle Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) investigations related to antisemitism on campus.

In return, the federal government will reinstate the majority of research grants that were frozen or withdrawn in March 2025. Columbia’s access to billions in current and future federal research funding will also be restored.

“This agreement allows Columbia to resume its essential research partnership with the federal government while preserving our independence,” said acting university president Claire Shipman. “It was carefully crafted to protect the values that define us.”

The settlement comes after the federal government suspended $400 million in research funding earlier this year following nationwide scrutiny of how elite universities handled campus protests and allegations of antisemitism. Columbia responded by implementing several policy reforms, including tighter restrictions on demonstrations, revised disciplinary procedures, and a review of its Middle East curriculum.

The deal also includes a provision for an independent monitor to oversee compliance and gives the federal government access to data on Columbia’s hiring and admissions practices. According to a senior White House official, Columbia must conduct a review of regional studies programs, beginning with those focused on the Middle East, and enhance oversight of international student admissions.

Columbia will now be required to share data with the government on applicants’ motivations for studying in the U.S.

US President Donald Trump praised the agreement on Truth Social, thanking Education Secretary Linda McMahon and commending Columbia “for agreeing to do what is right.” He also suggested more universities could soon face similar scrutiny.

“Numerous other higher education institutions that have hurt so many, and been so unfair and unjust, are upcoming,” Trump wrote.

In a message to the Columbia community, Shipman acknowledged the intense financial pressure facing the university, with over $1.3 billion in annual federal funding placed on hold.

“The risk of indefinite suspension, combined with the potential loss of our top scientists, posed an existential threat to Columbia’s future as a leading research institution,” she said.

In an interview with CNN, Shipman emphasized that the decision to settle was driven by long-term concerns.

“We considered litigation but concluded that the damage to our research mission and the risk of severing future ties with the federal government was too great,” she said.

Shipman rejected claims that the university capitulated to political pressure. “This wasn’t a matter of courage versus capitulation. It was about solving a deeply complex problem responsibly,” she added.

The Trump administration is portraying the Columbia settlement as a “roadmap” for other universities. Education Secretary McMahon called it a “seismic shift” in holding institutions accountable for alleged antisemitism and misuse of taxpayer funds.

“These reforms represent a turning point. They reaffirm a commitment to truth-seeking, merit, and civil debate,” McMahon said.

She added that the EEOC settlement is the largest of its kind in nearly two decades and aims to resolve civil rights violations against Jewish faculty and staff following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks.

The $200 million payment will go to the U.S. Treasury. A senior administration official said the funds could eventually be reallocated through Congress, with a potential focus on vocational training and apprenticeships.

Shipman described the agreement as a necessary reset for Columbia’s relationship with the federal government, concluding a process marked by months of “deep deliberation” and “word-by-word” negotiations.

The deal was met with cautious optimism from the university’s Jewish community.

“This announcement is an important recognition that antisemitism at Columbia is real and has had a tangible impact on Jewish students,” said Brian Cohen, executive director of Columbia/Barnard Hillel. “I’m hopeful that today’s agreement marks the beginning of real, sustained change.”

Analyst tells Trump firing Bondi is only way out of Epstein crisis

Donald Trump’s decision to prioritize personal loyalty over credibility at the Department of Justice has come back to haunt him in the most embarrassing way possible, a Washington Post columnist wrote.

And he added the only way out of his latest crisis is to let Attorney General Pam Bondi go.

The problem stems from Trump’s calculated shift away from the traditional model of independent attorneys general, Jason Willick wrote.

After being “burned by Mueller’s Russia investigation” in his first term, Trump deliberately installed “law enforcement leaders who would be not just politically aligned but also personally loyal — even if that meant abdicating norms of honesty and professional responsibility,” the columnist went on.

That strategy has now exploded in Trump’s face with the Jeffrey Epstein document fiasco. Unlike former Attorney General William Barr, who possessed “enough independent heft and credibility” to effectively shut down Russia collusion theories, Bondi “has no such credibility in the current Jeffrey Epstein imbroglio,” Willick wrote.

The damage was self-inflicted. In February, Bondi turned the Justice Department into a reality TV show, teasing on national television that incriminating Epstein information was “sitting on my desk.” She then handed out theatrical binders labeled “The Epstein Files: Phase 1” to right-wing media personalities at the White House — only to later admit there was “nothing new in the public interest to release,” Willick recalled.

“This absolute control over the department [Trump] has wanted and has now achieved in Trump 2.0 cuts in various ways, not all helpful to a president in conditions of scandal,” observed Bob Bauer, former White House counsel under Barack Obama. A Justice Department “functioning in this way, under his thumb, cannot provide him with the cover a president may need.”

The irony is staggering, Willick wrote. While Barr successfully “helped wind down Russiagate,” Bondi’s status as “a White House lackey makes it hard for her to wind down Epstein conspiracies, especially because she stoked them in the first place.”

Political observers suggest Trump faces a brutal choice: “If Trump wants to move on from Epstein, he might need to let go of his attorney general,” Willick wrote.

The alternative — keeping someone who “changed her tune on Epstein” — amounts to maintaining “the cover-up” itself.

More big names unveiled in Epstein’s ‘bawdy’ birthday book

The Wall Street Journal has detailed the letters included in deceased wealth manager and child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s 2003 birthday book by President Donald Trump and former President Bill Clinton, both of whom considered him friends decades ago. But a number of other wealthy, famous, and powerful people were named in that same book, according to a new report released by the Journal on Thursday evening.

According to the report, besides the two presidents, “Wall Street billionaire Leon Black, fashion designer Vera Wang and media owner Mort Zuckerman … ended up with letters in the 2003 book,” as well as “Victoria’s Secret leader Leslie Wexner, attorney Alan Dershowitz, and the late Jean-Luc Brunel, who ran a modeling agency.”

Dershowitz, a former Harvard professor and frequent defender of Trump in the media, has come up as an associate of Epstein’s many times in the past and was accused by Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s most outspoken victims, of taking part in his sex trafficking parties. Dershowitz has consistently denied this, and in 2022, Giuffre dropped her defamation suit against Dershowitz, saying she may have misremembered his identity as the co-conspirator in question. Giuffre died by suicide earlier this year.

One of the most “bawdy” and “crude” letters in the book came from billionaire former Microsoft executive Nathan Myhrvold, according to the report.

Myhrvold’s letter said he was “sending photos from a recent trip to Africa. ‘They seemed more appropriate than anything I could put in words,’ said the letter, which ended with a typed ‘Nathan.’ It was followed by photos of a monkey screaming, lions and zebras mating, and a zebra with its penis visible,” reported Khadeeja Safdar and Joe Palazzolo. Myhrvold’s spokesperson “said he doesn’t recall the submission and that he is a wildlife photographer who ‘regularly shares photos of and writes about animal behavior,'” and that he mainly knew Epstein through his donations to scientific research.

None of the letters implicated any of these figures in Epstein’s criminal behavior — but the revelations come at a time of intense public scrutiny of the case and criticism of the Trump administration for withholding documents from the prosecution, despite the president’s past promises.

Epstein survivor slams MAGA over Ghislaine Maxwell scheme

0

Maria Farmer, one of the many women assaulted by deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein in her youth as part of his trafficking operation, spoke out about how all of the explosion of controversy around the case is re-traumatizing her in an interview with MSNBC’s Jen Psaki on Thursday — and she called out those trying to rehabilitate Epstein’s convicted accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell for political purposes.

In recent days, as Trump’s Justice Department interviews Maxwell in prison to try to deflect from the anger from their own base over the lack of transparency, some right-wing commentators have begun to push a narrative that Maxwell might have been railroaded, with Newsmax’s Greg Kelly suggesting she might even be a victim herself.

“Let me start by asking you, I mean, this — this nightmare has followed you for a very, very long time, I mean, decades. And I’m sure that Jeffrey Epstein’s re-emergence, I mean, all over the news, has been incredibly painful,” said Psaki. “How are you? How are you doing? How are you, how are you digesting all of this?”

“Thank you for asking that,” said Farmer. “That’s very thoughtful, because a lot of people aren’t aware of every time his picture is on one of their podcasts or, you know, and I’ve asked several people, can you please not just flash this picture everywhere or Maxwell’s and not glamorize them? But thank you for asking that, because a lot of people aren’t aware that that retraumatizes victims.”

“Every time we have to see his face, and it’s a case that has just never gone away,” Farmer continued. “It just — it just won’t go away. And I need your audience to understand that, you know, I reported this almost three decades ago. So a lot of people will say, ‘Oh, why is she just coming forward now?’ And they think it’s political and it’s not. It’s something I’ve been working on pretty much — I dedicated all of my youth to this. And so I’m doing it not just for me, but for the victims who are now deceased and the victims that are very much alive. And I want to get justice for all of them.”

“I feel that for my little sister to have gone through what she went through and to have had to testify against Maxwell and then have to suffer,” she added. “And there are others that I love very much who are suffering this right now about Maxwell. It’s completely unacceptable. Why would Maxwell be given a voice when she is a convicted pedophile? I just — it’s been very difficult and I appreciate the question. I appreciate you asking.”

KBF NOT RECOGNIZED AS MEMBER OF TONSE ALLIANCE, SAYS YOUTH LEADER

KBF NOT RECOGNIZED AS MEMBER OF TONSE ALLIANCE, SAYS YOUTH LEADER

The President of the Southern African Students and Youth Development Association (SASYDA), Ibrahim Kabwe Mwamba, has clarified that Kelvin Bwalya Fube (KBF) is not a recognized member of the Tonse Alliance.

In a statement, Mwamba said that despite KBF’s assertions, he has never formally joined the alliance, as he has not followed the official procedure of appending his signature to the Tonse Alliance constitution. He urged KBF to apply through the appropriate channels if he wishes to be officially recognized.

Mwamba also addressed the status of Professor Dan Pule, noting that his role as interim chairman was elective and that he later chose to serve as deputy to former President Edgar Lungu. He emphasized that, according to the Tonse Alliance constitution, the Patriotic Front (PF), as the anchor party, is mandated to lead the alliance. He added that there is no provision in the constitution allowing the deputy chairman to assume leadership of the alliance.

Reaffirming his own membership, Mwamba stated that he had signed the alliance’s constitution and committed to its terms. He maintained that KBF, through his Zambia Must Prosper movement, has not taken such steps and therefore holds no official status within the alliance.

He concluded by calling on KBF to seek formal recognition from the Acting Chairman of the Tonse Alliance, Hon. Given Lubinda.

PF VOWS DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION, BLASTS SPEAKER FOR ILLEGAL INTERFERENCE IN OPPOSITION LEADERSHIP

PF VOWS DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION, BLASTS SPEAKER FOR ILLEGAL INTERFERENCE IN OPPOSITION LEADERSHIP

THE Patriotic Front has reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy and constitutional order ahead of the 2026 general election, with Secretary General Raphael Nakachinda announcing that the party will hold a national convention to elect its next leader,  and inviting figures like Miles Sampa and Robert Chabinga to contest if they believe they have the support.

“PF is a democratic political party. Anyone who wants to lead must earn it through a transparent process, not backdoor arrangements. Even Chabinga is invited, if he truly believes he has the numbers, let him face the people,” Nakachinda declared on the ShowStar House Podcast.

The PF convention, expected to take place after the burial of former President Edgar Lungu, is being positioned as the party’s cure to factionalism and legal disputes, offering a clear and open path to legitimate leadership.

In the same interview, Nakachinda launched a scathing attack on Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti, accusing her of acting illegally and unconstitutionally by recognizing Robert Chabinga as Leader of the Opposition while a stay order from the courts was in effect.

“The Speaker is not PF. She has no right to interfere in our internal matters, let alone disregard court rulings. What she did is not only politically biased, it’s illegal,” Nakachinda said, referencing a Court precedent that mandates the Speaker must respect official party communication on leadership.

The PF has since communicated that Miles Sampa is now the recognized Leader of the Opposition, following the expulsion of Chabinga and others, a move they insist is legally sound and backed by the courts.

With these two developments, the PF is crafting a narrative of a party ready to renew itself through democratic means, while calling out what it describes as state, backed sabotage of opposition operations in Parliament.

Nakachinda warned that no amount of judicial or parliamentary manipulation will silence the Zambian people, whom he described as the “true opposition to UPND going into 2026.”

ABOUT THE 2024 FIC TRENDS REPORT: WHERE DID THE $3.5 BILLION COME FROM AND WHERE DID IT GO?

ABOUT THE 2024 FIC TRENDS REPORT: WHERE DID THE $3.5 BILLION COME FROM AND WHERE DID IT GO?

By Sean Tembo – PeP President & TONSE ALLIANCE Spokesperson

1. In the past week, l took time to study the 2024 Financial Intelligence Center (FIC) Trends Report. The entire 55 pages. Of particular interest were the contents of page 9, which stated that there was a total of more than US$3.5 billion in illicit financial flows between January and December 2024, and that this largely came from illegal mining in North-Western and Luapula Provinces. This figure is extremely alarming due to its proportionate magnitude. To put it in context, the value of Zambia’s total copper exports in 2024 was only about US$6.7 billion, representing about 820 thousand metric tonnes, and our GDP for 2024 was only about US$29.4 billion.

2. In other words, illegal mining in Zambia, now represents more than half of legal mining, in value terms. But let’s pause for a minute here. When we talk about legal mining, we know where these mines are located. It is your KCM, Mopani, FQM, Kansanshi, etcetera, plus a number of smaller mines dotted across the country. And when we are driving on the roads, we can all see trucks carrying copper, cobalt, manganese etcetera, for export. But with regard to the $3.5 billion illegal mining industry in Zambia, some questions need to be asked. Firstly, where does this illegal mining take place and why can’t we see it? Secondly, what minerals are being mined? Thirdly, how is it possible that a $3.5 billion industry has managed to escape the detection of our law enforcement agencies?

3. Fortunately, the FIC 2024 Trends Report does help us to partially answer the first question and to fully answer the second question. The Report says most of the illegal mining is taking place in North-Western and Luapula Provinces, and that the majority of the minerals involved are gold and other precious metals. That leaves us with part of the first question, about why we are not able to see this illegal mining, and the third question, as to why our law enforcement agencies are unable to detect illegal mining of the magnitude of US$3.5 billion?

4. To put it in context, a mining operation that generates annual revenues of $3.5 billion is a massive operation. We have seen the illegal miners in Mufumbwe and Mumbwa and Luangwa and other parts of the country. And it is evident that those operations are too small in scale to even generate US$10 million per annum, let alone US$3.5 billion. This brings us back to our earlier outstanding questions. Why are we not able to see this US$3.5 billion illegal mining activity, and why are our law enforcement agencies not able to detect this illegal mining activity of such large scale, and put a stop to it?

5. To help answer the above questions, let us put down some facts regarding illegal mining in North-Western and Luapula Provinces. It is a fact that huge amounts of gold reserves were discovered in Kasenseli some time in the year 2020. It is a fact that the previous PF administration decided to incorporate a parastatal company called Zambia Gold Mining and Trading Company Limited in late 2020, and that this company was intended to undertake gold mining at Kasenseli, as well as buy gold from small scale artisanal miners in Mumbwa and other places across the country. It is a fact that when the UPND administration came into office in 2021, they decided to shelf the Zambia Gold Mining and Trading Company, and proceeded to deploy Zambia National Service (ZNS) soldiers to guard Kasenseli Mine.

6. It is a fact that for close to 4 years now, the UPND administration has not taken any tangible steps to commence operations for the Zambia Gold Mining and Trading Company, or to commercialize mining activities at Kasenseli Gold Mine. It is a fact that some time in 2022, a number of ZNS officers guarding Kasenseli Gold Mine were accused of undertaking illegal mining at the site which they were guarding, and the ZNS Command did promise the nation that disciplinary action will be taken against the erring officers. It is a fact that up to this date, no action, if any, taken against any erring officers has been communicated to the public. It is a fact that the FIC 2024 Trends Report cites North-Western Province as one of the main provinces where the $3.5 billion illegal mining is taking place, and further cites gold as one of the main minerals that is being illegally mined.

7. It is a fact that some time in 2022, there were reports of illegal mining of sugilite in Luapula. It is a fact that subsequently, the UPND Government decided to deploy ZNS officers to guard the various sugilite mines in Luapula. It is a fact that the UPND Government further promised to commercialize these sugilite mines which are being guarded by ZNS. It is a fact that up to date, there is no publicly known commercialization of the sugilite mines in Luapula. It is a fact that the FIC 2024 Trends Report cites Luapula as one of the key provinces where the $3.5 billion illegal mining is taking place.

8. It is also a fact that some time in 2023, this country faced a multi-million dollar Gold Scandal in which prominent people and senior Government officials at State House, were implicated. It is a fact that despite several dramatic arrests in this Gold Scandal, no one has actually been prosecuted for the subject offense to date. It is a fact that the aircraft and other property and money, which had been confiscated by law enforcement agencies from the Egyptian nationals that were involved in the Gold Scandal, has since been returned to them.

9. It is a fact that a US$3.5 billion illegal mining operation is unlikely to take place without law enforcement agencies being able to detect it, unless the law enforcement agencies have specifically been ordered to look the other way, or the individuals undertaking or supervising  the illegal mining, are those that cannot be questioned by law enforcement agencies. It is a fact that if ZNS personnel were to engage in an unlawful activity, the Police and other law enforcement agencies would be unlikely, unwilling or unable to apprehend them.

10. Fellow citizens, Zambia is our country. We are all entitled to benefit from its resources. Equally. It is wrong for any small group of individuals to want to benefit from Zambia’s resources, more than every other citizen, simply because of the political office that they may occupy. Each one of us has a duty and obligation to demand for accountability from those holding public office. It is time to know who is sharing the US$3.5 billion generated from illegal mining in Zambia.

FIC REPORT UNCOVERS $3.5 BILLION LOOT AS TEMBO DEMANDS ANSWERS FROM STATE

FIC REPORT UNCOVERS $3.5 BILLION LOOT AS TEMBO DEMANDS ANSWERS FROM STATE

A staggering US$3.5 billion in illicit financial flows linked to illegal mining has rocked the nation following the release of the 2024 Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) Trends Report and opposition leader Sean Tembo is demanding brutal accountability.

In a fiery statement issued Friday, Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) President and Tonse Alliance Spokesperson Sean Tembo tore into the government’s silence and inaction, accusing the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) of complicity and cover-up.

“The FIC report is clear. Between January and December 2024 alone, over US$3.5 billion left Zambia through illegal mining activities mainly from North-Western and Luapula Provinces. That’s more than half the value of our legitimate copper exports. Yet somehow, the government claims ignorance,” Tembo said.

Citing official GDP statistics, Tembo painted a disturbing picture: “Zambia’s 2024 GDP stood at US$29.4 billion. That means this criminal racket is equivalent to more than 11% of our entire economy. And you’re telling us law enforcement didn’t notice?”

Tembo, a forensic auditor with over 25 years in public audit practice, questioned why a mining operation of that magnitude exceeding the output of some of Zambia’s largest legitimate mines could go unnoticed by police, military, and intelligence agencies.

“Where did this gold and sugilite go? Who moved it across our borders? And more critically, who is protecting them? Because no syndicate of that scale can operate in broad daylight without official backing,” he charged.

The FIC report pinpointed North-Western and Luapula as the epicenters of the illegal extraction, citing gold and other precious minerals as the primary targets. Tembo further linked the findings to previous gold and sugilite scandals that rocked Kasenseli in Mwinilunga and various sites in Luapula Province.

He noted that after the PF administration established the Zambia Gold Mining and Trading Company in 2020 to formalize gold trade, the UPND government “shelved the initiative,” instead deploying Zambia National Service (ZNS) soldiers to guard the same mines a move that now raises red flags.

“ZNS was deployed, yes. But to guard or to mine? In 2022, their own officers were caught red-handed illegally mining at Kasenseli. Promises were made about disciplinary action. To date? Nothing. Absolute silence,” Tembo said.

He didn’t mince his words: “ZNS cannot be investigated by police. We all know that. So if ZNS personnel are involved, who will hold them to account? And if senior officials at State House were implicated in the 2023 Gold Scandal, and no one has been jailed despite dramatic arrests and publicized seizures what message does this send?”

Tembo reminded Zambians that the plane involved in the $5 million Gold Scandal with Egyptian nationals was quietly returned, along with the cash and contraband yet no public explanation has ever been offered.

He slammed what he called “a high-level criminal cartel hiding behind national uniforms and political offices,” adding, “This is not artisanal mining this is state-sanctioned looting of our national wealth.”

“Zambia does not belong to a few individuals in government uniforms or executive corridors. We all have an equal claim to its resources. It is time we demand to know who is pocketing this $3.5 billion. If they are in Cabinet, Parliament, or State House they must be exposed, arrested, and jailed. No one should be above the law.”

Tembo’s bombshell adds to growing public frustration over unexplained riches, elite impunity, and the increasingly visible militarization of mining sites in Zambia.

THIS IS GRAND CORRUPTION

…it’s not the stealing of petty cash; it is the stealing of the entire economy claims Dr. M’membe

Lusaka… Wednesday July 23, 2025 – Socialist Party (SP) President Dr. Fred M’membe says there is grand corruption under the UPND administration.

Dr. M’membe says it is not the stealing of petty cash but that it is the stealing of the entire economy.

He said this is the most corrupt regime in the history of this country.

He claimed that this regime is more corrupt than the colonial government, and more corrupt than all administrations that this country has had.

He stated that President Hakainde Hichilema and his cabinet cannot even admit when they have failed to keep their promises, promises that are clearly documented.

He said this when he and his General Secretary Dr. Cosmas Musumali featured on ‘Socialist Hour’ on Hot FM Radio in Lusaka today.

“This is the most corrupt regime of our history. More corrupt than the colonial government, it’s more corrupt than all administrations that this country has had. This is grand corruption and not small corruption. It’s not the stealing of petty cash, it’s the stealing of the entire economy,” he said.

“It is important to highlight the critical and ongoing concern of the continued rise in corruption under the leadership of Mr Hakainde Hichilema. What we are witnessing is a troubling escalation of corruption at levels never seen before in the history of our country. We expect that this will be thoroughly exposed in the latest FIC report which many anticipate will paint a damaging picture of current administration’s failure to uphold transparency and integrity.”

Dr. M’membe further said what is more troubling is the failure by the UPND to find a lasting solution to the corruption going on in the country.

“It is also worth noting that it is not only more national budget left under the Minister of Finance, it is also evident that this government lacks a coherent and sustainable strategy to combat corruption or provide a long term solutions to key issues in all the sectors such as mining, agriculture, health and a broader economy affecting our people,” he added.

“The evidence of the failure of this government is found in the numerous and unfulfilled, broken or abandoned promises by Mr Hichilema during the time he was seeking Zambian’s votes. His promises were founded or provided a foundation on which Zambians voted for Mr Hichilema and entrusted this government with power.”

And Dr. Musumali said it is important that the UPND accepts that they have failed to deliver according to their promises.

Dr. Musumali said the UPND administration should communicate with the masses that they have failed.

“When a political party is vying for power and you go to the people of Zambia and actually make that promise, it’s actually a social contract. You are telling Zambians we are ready to serve you, we are signing a social contract, we are going to run a government that will provide certain services. This is how we will serve you, this is how much of your money we are going to use and entrust us. The people in turn will trust you,” he stated.

Don’t be too excited over announced $1.1b crude oil refinery in Ndola – Kalaba

Citizens First (CF) leader Harry Kalaba has urged Zambians to temper their excitement over the recently announced $1.1 billion crude oil refinery project in Ndola, warning that it may be another election-season promise designed to sway voters.

“In the past, this government has promised the moon and not even delivered a star,” Kalaba said, referencing the UPND’s track record on infrastructure and economic pledges. “Let’s wait until the bulldozers roll before we celebrate.”

The refinery, backed by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), Fujian Xiang Xin Corporation, and the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), is expected to process 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day and generate thousands of jobs.

But Kalaba remains skeptical, citing the Lobito oil project in Angola as a more credible example of regional energy development. He said Angola’s Lobito Refinery, slated for completion in 2025, will process 200,000 barrels per day and is already transforming Angola’s downstream sector.

Kalaba warned that with elections just a year away, Zambians should brace for a flood of promises such as cheap mealie meal, new bridges, and roads—that may never

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA DONATES SCHOOL BUS TO FOOTPRINTS OF HOPE IN HONOUR OF DORA NYAMBE’S LEGACY

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA DONATES SCHOOL BUS TO FOOTPRINTS OF HOPE IN HONOUR OF DORA NYAMBE’S LEGACY

By Wagon Media Team| July 24, 2025

In a powerful testament to the value of education and rural empowerment, President Hakainde Hichilema has donated a school bus to Footprints of Hope, a community school located in Mapapa village, Luano District — about 280 km north of Lusaka.

The symbolic handover took place this afternoon at State House, witnessed by government officials, educators, and stakeholders passionate about rural development and access to quality education.

The school was founded by the late Dora Moono Nyambe, a remarkable humanitarian whose vision and selfless service transformed lives in Luano. From teaching vulnerable children under a tree to building a full-fledged boarding school, Dora’s work lives on through Footprints of Hope, which today serves as a beacon of hope for many rural children.

Permanent Secretary for Information and Media, Mr. Thabo Kawana, described the gesture as both practical and symbolic.

“This donation underscores President Hichilema’s unwavering commitment to education and inclusivity, particularly in rural communities,” he said. “It is a recognition of Dora’s legacy and a pledge to continue investing in children who are the future of our nation.”

The new school bus is expected to enhance access to education by easing transportation challenges for pupils, improving attendance, and boosting academic morale among learners.

Mr. Kawana reaffirmed the New Dawn Government’s commitment to education sector reforms, saying the administration is focused on strengthening the foundations of human capital and economic growth.

“Supporting education remains at the heart of this government. We are determined to uplift every child, from the remotest village to the busiest city,” Mr. Kawana added.

As Zambia marches toward equitable development, stories like that of Footprints of Hope — and heroes like Dora Nyambe — continue to inspire a nation determined to leave no child behind.

FINANCE MINISTER HAILS ZAMBIA’S STEADY 5% ANNUAL ECONOMIC GROWTH SINCE 2021

FINANCE MINISTER HAILS ZAMBIA’S STEADY 5% ANNUAL ECONOMIC GROWTH SINCE 2021

By Chamuka Shalubala

Finance and National Planning Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane has expressed satisfaction with Zambia’s economic growth, averaging 5% annually since 2021.

Speaking this morning when he officiated at the town hall meeting on the 2nd quarter Economic and Budget performance, Dr. Musokotwane however notes that the challenge lies in sustaining this growth to improve the livelihoods of most Zambians.

He also emphasized the need for Zambia to become self-sustaining due to declining donor support.

And Dr. Musokotwane says government deliberately agreed not to restructure the domestic debt for fear of Zambia getting into a crisis.

At the same event, Secretary to the Treasury Felix Nkulukusa disclosed that Zambia has achieved over 92% debt restructuring with creditors, amounting to $12.4 billion.

He said that only 7.8% of the country’s external debt remained to be restructured with private creditors which is yet to be agreed in principle.

ZAMMSA AUDIT REPORT COULD SHAKE INVESTOR CONFIDENCE-ECONOMIST

ZAMMSA AUDIT REPORT COULD SHAKE INVESTOR CONFIDENCE-ECONOMIST

By Sherry Chabala (News Digggers)

Economist Noah Kabwita says the ZAMMSA audit report might affect investor confidence.

He argues that some sensitive short-term investors may choose to withdraw their investments, while long-term investors will likely watch to see how government would address the scandals.

Reacting to the ZAMMSA forensic audit , which reveals various irregularities in drug procurement, including the buying of inflated and short-dated drugs, Kabwita said Zambia should be concerned that investors are watching and need to be respected when they are investing in the health sector.

“So when you say what will happen to the investor confidence amidst the ZAMMSA report ? Short term investors will run away and those who are long term will watch how government will correct this situation because a healthy population is a productive worker in those companies . So they would rather government handles the health sector well, but if the government and the ministry of Health are not that they get frustrated and disappointed because they will have a lot of their workers failing to go for work and there’re will be loss of investment , working time, which will disturb their profits by virtue of being mid or short term oriented,” he said.

“Long term investors come in with a mentality of knowing that they need to build their own health centers within their facilities of investment. But despite being long term investors they would rather the government puts its house in order because some of those investors are at the same time contributors to these funds, they are philanthropists, they donate huge funds to support the health sector in the country of operations and so they get concerned and not necessarily withdraw. Zambia should be concerned  that investors are watching and need to be respected when they are pumping in money in the health sector , we need to value their efforts”.

Kabwita however said long term investors would not be shaken but would watch how the government handles the scandals.

“When you talk about investors confidence, yes it will be disturbed a bit, but this is a public matter . It has to do with the government with the government and how it is managing the health sector , especially the acquisition and distribution of medicines. This issue has been there even before this party which is in power today came into office. If we can recall during the MMD government these scandals were there, then we came into PF, also there was a scandal in the same ministry. We have come into UPNMD again because of the ZAMMSA scandal,” said Kabwita.

“This means donor funders, especially investors have a track record , they’ve been looking at how we have been performing in the health sector as far as managing medicines and distribution is concerned . Short term investors that are sensitive and wouldn’t want to work with countries that fail to run their ministry of health wings accordingly may decide to withdraw investment or may decide to sit on the fence and watch how Zambia handles the reports in the ZAMMSA audit.

But there are long term investors who look at their investment for a period of 15 years or more for them to start seeing serious results. So those who don’t get distracted easily, but those within the range of five years which fall under medium investment, will get scared. For example, look at MMD days, there was the Kapoko issue also to do with medicines, where the Auditor General brought out very serious issues and when agencies that deal with that took action and some people were fired,”

SCHEMES TO REDUCE OPPOSITION SEATS IN PARLIAMENT DETRIMENTAL TO ZAMBIA’S DEMOCRACY – SP

SCHEMES TO REDUCE OPPOSITION SEATS IN PARLIAMENT DETRIMENTAL TO ZAMBIA’S DEMOCRACY – SP

Petauke… Thursday July 24, 2025 – The Socialist Party (SP) in Eastern Province has strongly condemned what it describes as deliberate efforts by the ruling UPND to weaken the opposition by creating Parliamentary by-elections targeting opposition strongholds.

SP Eastern Province Chairperson Mabvuto Banda accused the UPND government of orchestrating the removal of opposition Members of Parliament in a bid to strengthen its majority in the National Assembly.

“So far, more than seven Parliamentary by-elections have been triggered by the UPND, and all of them have involved opposition-held seats. This is a calculated move to silence alternative voices in Parliament,” charged Banda.

He named constituencies affected by what he called “politically motivated removals” of MPs, including Kabushi, Kwacha, Pambashe, Kawambwa Central, Lumezi, Petauke Central, and Mfuwe.

“Most of these Members of Parliament have been sent to prison on questionable charges. Our judiciary no longer functions independently — it takes instructions. We are losing trust in the judicial system,” Mr. Banda lamented.

He further alleged that President Hakainde Hichilema is attempting to entrench his hold on power despite waning public support.

“Many Zambians are disillusioned with Mr Hichilema’s governance style. He came into power with the promise of democratic renewal and institutional reform, yet today, he is doing the very things he once opposed,” Mr Banda said.

He noted that while in opposition, President Hichilema was vocal about shrinking democratic space, lack of judicial independence, and corruption under previous regimes.

“HH cried foul over abuse of state power, lack of rule of law, and political persecution. Ironically, he is now presiding over the same injustices — even worse,” Banda stated.

Mr Banda concluded by calling for genuine respect for democracy and urged the government to stop using state institutions to neutralize opposition voices.

“It must be a legitimate reason for someone to lose a seat in Parliament. The path the UPND is taking is dangerous for Zambia’s democratic health,” he warned.

MALAWI’S ECONOMY WORSENS, IMF HIGHLIGHTS MACROECONOMIC CHALLENGES

By: Malawi24

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that Malawi’s economy is facing significant challenges, including high inflation, persistent deficits, unsustainable fiscal debt, foreign exchange shortages, and fuel scarcity.

These challenges have been highlighted in the IMF’s 2025 Article IV consultation with Malawi, which notes that the country’s GDP has declined to 1.8% from 1.9% in 2023.

According to the IMF, the overall fiscal deficit stands at 10.1% in the 2024/2025 fiscal year, attributed to low projected revenue, election spending, and an increase in interest bills.

The IMF also reports that public debt dynamics remain unsustainable, with total public debt reaching 88% of GDP by the end of 2024, and interest bills on public debt estimated to approach 7% of GDP.
The 2023 Extended Credit Facility (ECF) to Malawi was automatically terminated on May 14, 2025, after 18 months without completing a review since its approval.

In light of these significant downside risks, IMF directors have emphasised the need for decisive and urgent policy action to stabilise the economy and implement reforms that foster sustained and inclusive growth, ultimately improving living conditions for Malawians.

The IMF has appealed to the government of Malawi to raise domestic revenue, reform unnecessary spending, stabilise the exchange rate, and control corruption, as the country’s foreign exchange reserves are down to less than a week’s worth of imports.

Woman to sues Cardi B claiming she was “forcefully” hit by a microphone thrown by the rapper

An Ohio woman is suing Cardi B, claiming she was “forcefully” hit by a microphone thrown by the rapper during a performance at Drai’s Beachclub in Las Vegas in 2023.

According to a complaint filed in the Eighth Judicial Court in Clark County, Nevada, the woman, identified as Jane Doe, attended Cardi’s headlining performance at Drai’s Beachclub on July 29, 2023.

The lawsuit claims that during her performance, Cardi, 32, “appeared onstage under visibly high-temperature conditions and, while holding a microphone, verbally requested that the audience splash water on her.”

At the time, a clip from the concert went viral showing the “Bodak Yellow” hitmaker asking the crowd to “splash her down”.

“Splash me down. That st feel good. Put that s* in my p***y, bitch. Come on,” the video shows her telling onlookers. It is unclear, however, if the video was taken before or after the incident.

The lawsuit alleges that Cardi “made repeated gestures and statements encouraging concertgoers to throw water, implicitly authorizing and inviting light splashing from drinks.”

Doe claims Cardi “further demonstrated her consent and participation by pouring water from a bottle over her body while onstage,” and that she “physically reacted to splashes by slapping her posterior while audience-thrown liquids made contact with her.”

According to the complaint, Doe, in an effort to act in “accordance with the environment,” and “in a manner consistent with other attendees, splashed a small portion of her drink in Cardi B’s direction.”

Cardi allegedly acted in “apparent anger and without warning” by “suddenly and forcefully” throwing her microphone “directly” at her, Doe claims, alleging that she experienced “immediate apprehension of an imminent harmful contact” immediately after.

She claims that the microphone did make contact with her after it was thrown, “resulting in offensive and unconsented physical contact and causing physical injury.”

Doe says in her filing that Cardi should have known that the microphone “presented a foreseeable risk of physical injury when thrown,” making the rapper’s actions “an unjustified and retaliatory act that resulted in harmful and offensive contact” with Doe.

Cardi’s actions were “excessive, disproportionate, and undertaken in a public venue, causing additional reputational and emotional harm,” Doe alleges.

She is suing for assault, battery and negligence, alleging that she underwent “severe emotional distress, shock, humiliation, and physical injury.”

The woman is also suing Drai’s Management Group for negligence.

The complaint also claims that during a performance at Drai’s Beachclub the night before, Cardi allegedly threw her microphone toward a DJ who was cutting off her songs early during another performance, as seen on TikTok.

“Drai’s knew or should have known of this prior incident and that Cardi B posed a foreseeable risk of repeat violent conduct during her performance,” the lawsuit claims.

The microphone used in the incident was auctioned for approximately $99,000 by Scott Fisher, owner of The Wave, which Doe claims exacerbated her “emotional distress.”

She says she’s “suffered physical pain, emotional distress, reputational damage, embarrassment, and harassment from both media and members of the public,” and is seeking compensatory and punitive damages.

Following the incident, a criminal battery investigation was launched against the rapper, but the case was closed due to “insufficient evidence.”

In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Doe said: “What has been written off as a joke by many people is actually a traumatic experience that has significantly impacted my well-being and quality of life. I am seeking justice in the hopes of holding Cardi B accountable for her misdeeds, as no celebrity is above the law.”

Cardi B’s lawyer has responded to the lawsuit.

“The filing of a civil case against Ms. Almanzar regarding the two year old microphone incident is a transparent and pitiful attempted financial shakedown,” Drew Findling, an attorney for Cardi B, said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Clark County District Attorney’s Office closed this matter for insufficient evidence a long time ago, but apparently the opportunity to try to make money off of a celebrity was too much for some willing law firm to pass up.”

PREPARE FOR REAL WAR KIM TELLS HIS TROOPS

PREPARE FOR REAL WAR KIM TELLS HIS TROOPS.

North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un has called on his armed forces to be fully prepared “for real war”, according to state media reports released on Thursday. His comments were made while overseeing an artillery drill involving live-fire exercises, during which troops launched shells into the sea.

Footage broadcast by Korea Central Television showed uniformed artillery units in action, firing rounds as Kim observed through binoculars from a vantage point, accompanied by senior military officials. Although the event took place on Wednesday, the precise location was not revealed.

The Korean Central News Agency, in an English-language dispatch, reported that Kim instructed his forces to maintain constant readiness for actual combat, stressing the importance of being able to “annihilate the enemy in every battle”.

Kim’s warlike rhetoric comes amid growing concerns over North Korea’s military involvement in support of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, now in its fourth year. Intelligence assessments from South Korea and Western allies suggest that Pyongyang has sent over 10,000 troops to Russia’s Kursk region and supplied large quantities of military equipment, including artillery shells, missiles and long-range rocket systems.

According to Seoul, around 600 North Korean soldiers have died and thousands more have sustained injuries while fighting alongside Russian forces.

Kim has previously expressed unwavering support for Moscow’s war effort. During high-level discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the North Korean leader reaffirmed his commitment to the alliance. The two nations, both under extensive international sanctions, strengthened their ties with the signing of a mutual defence agreement last year, a deal made during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rare visit to Pyongyang.

BANKERS ASSOCIATION SAYS ZAMBIA ON TRACK TO HIT 1 MILLION METRIC TONS OF COPPER PRODUCTION TARGET THIS YEAR

BANKERS ASSOCIATION SAYS ZAMBIA ON TRACK TO HIT 1 MILLION METRIC TONS OF COPPER PRODUCTION TARGET THIS YEAR

By Michael  Kaluba

Bankers Association of Zambia President Leonard Mwanza is confident that Zambia is on track to achieve government’s 2025 copper production target of one million metric tons, following a 30 percent increase in output recorded in the first quarter of the year.

Mr. Mwanza says the surge in production will significantly increase copper export volumes, and in turn boost mining sector tax contributions toward a positive impact on the broader economy, in the second half of the year.

He has also pointed to other economic indicators showing positive momentum, including a continued decline in mealie meal and fuel prices, alongside the effects of a bumper harvest that has helped ease inflationary pressures.

Mr. Mwanza tells Phoenix News that a stable macroeconomic outlook is essential for the banking sector to effectively support both productive activities and household needs through increased lending and financial services.

He has further reaffirmed the banking industry’s commitment to working with government and stakeholders to sustain economic growth and support key sectors driving national development.

MINISTRY OF TOURISM WARNS AGAINST DELIBERATE IRRITATION OF ELEPHANTS – CALLS FOR RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR AROUND WILDLIFE

MINISTRY OF TOURISM WARNS AGAINST DELIBERATE IRRITATION OF ELEPHANTS – CALLS FOR RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR AROUND WILDLIFE

Lusaka, Thursday, 24th July 2025

The Ministry of  Tourism has noted with serious concern a video circulating on social media showing individuals deliberately provoking elephants  in Livingstone. Such behaviour agitates elephants and compromises public safety.

We, therefore, wish to categorically warn members of the public, especially those living in or visiting areas where elephants and other wild animals are present, against deliberately irritating or provoking wildlife by shouting, chasing or throwing objects at them. Generally, elephants are calm but wild and dangerous animals that, when provoked, can become aggressive and cause fatal harm to humans or damage to property.

In this enlightment, the Ministry wishes to remind the public that:

1. Wild animals must be treated with respect and caution. They are not to be approached, taunted, or interacted with for entertainment purposes.

2. Deliberate provocation of wildlife constitutes an offense under the Zambia Wildlife Act and may result in prosecution, fines, or imprisonment of perpetrators.

3.  Provocation of elephants may cause loss of human life and other fatalities and may result in the unnecessary killing of animals that were otherwise peaceful, all due to human recklessness.

We urge communities and individuals to take the following safety measures seriously:

– Keep a safe distance of more than 50m from the elephants and all wildlife.
– Do not attempt to feed, chase, or mock animals.
– Report any stray or threatening animal activity to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife immediately.
– Educate children and visitors about the importance of wildlife conservation and the need for co-existence.

The Ministry, through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, continues to work with communities and stakeholders to promote coexistence between humans and wildlife. However, this can only be successful if all citizens play their part by acting responsibly and respectfully toward our natural heritage.

Let us remember that wildlife is a national treasure and must be protected not provoked.

Venus Williams reveals she returned to tennis because of health insurance

Though Venus Williams became the second-oldest woman to win a professional tour-level singles match after her victory over Peyton Stearns at the DC Open on Tuesday, the 45-year-old tennis legend revealed that she actually returned to the court because she needed health insurance.

Williams’ return to the court came after a 16-month hiatus. The last time she played an official singles match was in 2024, and she last won a singles match in August 2023.

“I had to come back for the insurance,” the seven-time singles grand slam champion said in her post-match interview, Newsweek reported. “They informed me this year that I’m on COBRA, so it’s like, I got to get my benefits on,” she added, as the audience reacted with laughter.

“I’m always at the doctor, so I need this insurance,” she explained. Williams has had her own share of injury and health setbacks in the past. The 45-year-old suffered a serious knee injury while playing a Wimbledon match in 2023. She was also not fully fit when she competed at this year’s U.S. Open.

Williams in a previous interview with NBC News detailed the severe menstrual cramps she had to endure because of fibroids and how doctors initially ignored the symptoms. She eventually went under the knife to treat her condition.

Per the U.S. Department of Labour, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) affords Americans and their families who “lose their health benefits the right to choose to continue group health benefits provided by their group health plan for limited periods of time under certain circumstances such as voluntary or involuntary job loss, reduction in the hours worked, transition between jobs, death, divorce, and other life events.”

And though Williams has a $95 million net worth, her statement underscores the current state of healthcare expenses in the United States, Newsweek reported. Williams, a multi-millionaire, somewhat implying that she cannot stop playing professional tennis because she needs health insurance, casts the spotlight on how Americans who are not in her shoes can cover their medical expenses.

The KFF has said that for many years, its polling has “found that the high cost of health care is a burden on U.S. families, and that health care costs factor into decisions about insurance coverage and care seeking.”

The KFF states that “these costs and the prospect of unexpected medical bills also rank as the top financial worries for adults and their families.”

Plane carrying 49 people crashed in Russia’s far eastern region

A plane carrying 49 people crashed in Russia’s far eastern region of Amur on Thursday, July 24, authorities said.

The aircraft, a twin-engine Antonov-24 operated by Angara Airlines, was headed to the town of Tynda from the city of Blagoveshchensk near the Russian-Chinese border when it disappeared from radar, regional governor Vassily Orlov said on Telegram.

Forty-three passengers, including five children, were on board along with six crew members, The Associated Press reported, citing Orlov.

A rescue helicopter later spotted the plane’s burning fuselage on a mountainside about 10 miles from Tynda, authorities said.

The helicopter saw no evidence of survivors from above, local rescuers said.

The Amur region’s civil defense agency said it was dispatching rescuers to the scene.

“At the moment, 25 people and five units of equipment have been dispatched, and four aircraft with crews are on standby,” it said.

The Investigative Committee initiated a criminal case following the incident.

Court declares Trump’s birthright citizenship order unconstitutional

A federal appeals court has declared that President Donald Trump’s executive order curtailing birthright citizenship is unconstitutional.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco affirmed a lower court’s decision blocking the nationwide enforcement of the EO, which would deny citizenship to babies born to people illegally or temporarily in the U.S.

A three-judge panel ruled against Trump’s plan in a 2-1 vote, keeping a decision first made by U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour in Seattle in place.

“The district court correctly concluded that the Executive Order’s proposed interpretation, denying citizenship to many persons born in the United States, is unconstitutional. We fully agree,” the majority wrote.

Though the Supreme Court has since restricted lower courts from issuing nationwide injunctions, the majority in the 9th Circuit ruled against the EO after discovering the case fell under an exception left open by SCOTUS justices.

States filed the case against the Trump administration after arguing that a nationwide order is needed to block the EO in order to prevent problems that would arise from birthright citizenship being outlawed in some states.

“We conclude that the district court did not abuse its discretion in issuing a universal injunction in order to give the States complete relief,” wrote Judges Michael Hawkins and Ronald Gould, both of whom were appointed by former President Bill Clinton.

The Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment states that people born or naturalized in the U.S., or “subject to United States jurisdiction,” are American citizens, but Department of Justice attorneys argue that does not mean children are automatically American citizens based solely on birth location.

Trump’s EO would deny American citizenship to a child born to a mother without legal or permanent status in the U.S., and whose father does not hold legal or permanent status.

The Trump administration is facing about nine lawsuits across the country challenging the EO.
