NASON MSONI wants the Human Rights Commission to investigate extrajudicial killings by the Police

HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION URGED TO THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT LED POLICE TO SLAY SUSPECTS IN THEIR CUSTODY

The do-nothing Human rights commission must take keen interest in the slaying of suspects in cold blood by the police.

The explanations given by the Zambian police does not add up and there is a danger that innocent lives might have been put down.

We must hold everyone accountable for their actions. The mere fact that the victims have been criminalized is not good enough a reason to believe the statement issued by the police.

The credibility of the Zambian police is tainted and is synonymous with lies and deception.

What is inconceivable is why in the first place the suspects after being arrest had to be taken to a hideout and secluded spot where the killings took place.

In an ideal situation the suspects should have been taken to a police station for detention and the subsequent commencement of investigations.

What if I suppose and allege that the suspects might have been gunned down after failing to produce what was demanded from them?

In a nutshell we must all reject and condemn this kind of policing that takes away the life from a suspect Willy nilly. This conduct by the police gives way to speculation.

I doubt that there was any real danger posed to police officers that warranted the use of such disproportionate force against the defenseless citizens.

Certainly something is amiss here requiring further investigations.

It is double standards to assert that capital punishment is abolished on one hand and then savagely taking away life from suspects through extrajudicial killings.

The disproportionate use of force by the police and the extrajudicial killings of suspects has got to stop forthwith. Suspects should be accorded the opportunity to be brought before court.

In order to bring finality in this suspicious slaying of suspects, We call for a thorough and expeditious investigation in this matter.

The judiciary has rescinded its decision to broadcast live the witchcraft trial case

Judiciary cancels live broadcast of juju assassins

THE much anticipated live broadcast of the trial of two self proclaimed witch doctors accused of attempting to cast a spell on President Hakainde Hichilema has been cancelled.

In a statement issued by the Judiciary of Zambia Corporate Communication deputy director Kalumba Slavin, the Judiciary revealed that it had reversed its earlier decision to televise the case involving Leonard Phiri and Jasten Candunde because of concerns raised by various stakeholders.

Slavin said the trial which commences tomorrow will proceed in open court and as such, members of the public and media houses will continue to have access in accordance with established procedures governing court hearings.

“We sincerely regret any inconvenience that this decision may cause to media houses whose requests for live coverage had been granted.”

“Notwithstanding this, the Judiciary reaffirms its unwavering dedication to the principles of open justice and the fair administration of the judicial process,” she added.

The announcement comes just days after judicial authorities had set up a technical team to facilitate live coverage of the proceedings.

The accused, Leonard Phiri aged 43 from Sinda district of Eastern Province and Jasten Candunde aged 42 from Mozambique face charges under Zambia’s Witchcraft Act.

The duo is accused of possessing charms and professing knowledge of witchcraft in their alleged plot to bewitch the Head of State.

Police investigations suggest that Phiri and Candunde were allegedly hired by Nelson Banda, the younger brother of fugitive and former independent member of parliament for Petauke Central, Emmanuel Jay Banda.

The witch doctors were reportedly promised K2 million for their services but only received an advance payment of K16,500 before their scheme crumbled.

However, the juju men were caught before they could even cast a spell on the Seventh Day Adventist master guide, President Hichilema.

During their arrest, authorities found the witch doctors in possession of various charms, including a live chameleon and a tortoise believed to be tools of their trade.

The accused, however insisted that they are certified traditional healers affiliated with the Traditional Health Practitioners Association of Zambia (Thapaz).

On January 20, 2025, the two spiritual practitioners were denied bail by Magistrate Fines Mayambu after the State argued that they posed a flight risk.

The prosecution revealed that Phiri had previously attempted to escape custody, prompting the court to keep both men behind bars until trial.

Meanwhile, Phiri requested medical attention, citing a headache and a cough while Candunde asked for a Chewa interpreter before the trial began.

NEW CURRENCY NOTES DEBATE .PART 1- Dr. Nevers Mumba

By  Dr. Nevers Mumba

NEW CURRENCY NOTES DEBATE .PART 1
————————————————————————————
As Zambians, we are no strangers to lively debates. One such debate that has ensued in the nation is about a development I personally consider a positive change – the introduction of new currency notes.

According to the government, the new currency family, set to be launched on March 31, 2025, celebrates our rich heritage, featuring elements that showcase our unique flora, fauna, and breathtaking waterfalls. The introduction of higher denomination notes is a convenient and cost-effective solution, aimed at reducing the cost of printing currency for bulk cash transactions while increasing convenience.

I have gone through many of the arguments advanced by many of our citizens.I also acknowledge that some of you may have fairly presented your concerns about the removal of historic monuments from the notes and the possible erosion of value of the currency after the introduction of the higher denominations.

However, I urge you to consider the facts and also the bigger picture.I believe that even within the teams that sat to consider the new designs, these were hot issues. Nonetheless, care must be taken here. Are these concerns factual or are they merely sentimental, differences in opinion and methodology? We know that the Bank of Zambia’s decision to introduce the 200 and 500 kwacha notes, along with the incorporation of various animals on each note, is a product of years of research and consultation with diverse stakeholders and this process started even before the current government took over office. In other words, I would like us to debate these changes in light of National Objectives and not through the narrow lenses of political divisiveness.

CURRENCY SYMBOLISM

Is it true that as a country, our collective Hopes, dreams, and aspirations can only ever be encapsulated in the figure of the freedom statue and other heritage images or events that led to the historic Night of October the 24th, 1964? Are we saying that our currency must forever have the same symbolism throughout our existence or can different seasons call for different themes and marketing strategies depending on what we want to achieve as a nation? In fact in the church world where I come from, we change themes every year and sometimes every quarter. This is done to ensure the the body of christ does not fall behind in other aspects of crucial importance in trying to maintain one doctrinal or critical issue no matter how important.

What is wrong with basing our currency images on something else, such as our aspiration to diversify our economy and pursue Agricultural and  Tourism as a major source of Forex that we can use to drive the national marketing strategy of Zambia into the next few decades?

CURRENCY DEVALUATION

Secondly, there is a narrative that some have advanced that the introduction of higher denomination notes will lead to inflation or erosion of value. This cannot be true. The size of note has no direct impact on its value. It could happen sometimes that coincidentally, in some cases, currency changes have been effected at a time when a country’s economy as a whole is also in recession and it may appear to some that the currency change is what has caused the erosion of value when in fact not. The relationship of cause and effect is only determind by serious econometrix analysis and not by mere simple facebook specultion.

As at present, we know that the factors that are currently weighing us down and continue to affect the Zambian economy currently are:

● A serious debt burden inherited from the previous regime and a looming Debt Default which can only dissappear after complete debt restructuring.

●A serious Drought and the associated Power Crisis that has led to low productivity across industry, including reduced Mining and Agro Business even despite our country having huge mineral deposits, arable land and a youthful population

●A rising population with a high appetite for consuming foreign produced goods and services at the expense of developing our own substitute goods and services. This has continued to produce a bad balance of payments situation and ultimately, a deteriorating exchange rate, further exercabating the cost of living.

●Low Tourism Turnover despite having a high tourism potential

With the above points, we can clearly see that the proposed and recently announced currency change is not only a convenient and cost-effective solution to having many notes with less value, but the Bank Of Zambia have taken advantage of this currency change to Introduce a different strategy in our currency branding which is more focused on financial freedom as a goal, anchored on Tourism and agriculture rather than keeping the theme of political freedom anchored on the liberation struggle from colonialism.

Let’s not forget that our nation’s development is not solely defined by our freedom struggle of the sixties, but it is equally undergurded by our current fight for equitable access to our God given resources as Africans. We must be free to look to the future with new ideas and capitalize on our unique strengths, such as our vibrant culture and breathtaking natural beauty

CONCLUSION

In other words, I acknowledge that both arguments, those for, and those against this change, are, of course, worth a token, But I also believe that progress can never be made while we remain static. When it comes to effective change, such is life, we must always be brave enough to try new ideas and new situations. In fact, this is not new at all. It is a common scenario in change management and whenever a society is effecting changes that are wholsale in nature, there is always going to be a clash between the new ideas and what that particular society has become accustomed to up to that point.

Look out for PART 2.

Dr. Nevers Mumba: A Political Opportunist Who Betrays Principle for Power- Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

Dr. Nevers Mumba: A Political Opportunist Who Betrays Principle for Power

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

Dr. Nevers Mumba has consistently failed to live up to his role as both a man of God and an opposition leader. He has abandoned principle for convenience, patriotism for self-preservation, and leadership for opportunism. Rather than standing firm on values that benefit the Zambian people, he has mastered the art of political survival by shamelessly aligning himself with every government of the day. His political journey is not one of conviction but of calculated moves designed to keep him relevant, regardless of the cost to the nation.

A Predictable Pattern of Political Survival

Truth be told, Dr. Nevers Mumba is not a man to be figured out or debated—he is a man to be understood for what he is. He has shown time and time again that he will never stand on his own. Expecting him to one day take a bold, independent stance against the ruling party is an exercise in futility. The truth is clear: only God can change him, and until that happens, what you see is what you get.

Ba Nevers does not simply support the government of the day—he bends entirely in its favor. It doesn’t matter if it’s MMD, PF, or UPND; the moment they ascend to power, he is the first to pledge unwavering loyalty. This is not speculation—it is a consistent, predictable pattern. Whether the policies are right or wrong, whether they serve the people or not, Dr. Mumba will always be among the first to endorse them without scrutiny, challenge, oru hesitation.

A Betrayal of His Calling

Even more disappointing is the fact that Dr. Mumba was once a respected preacher of the gospel. As a man of God, he had a moral duty to speak truth to power, to stand up for justice, fairness, and the national interest—regardless of which party is in charge. Instead, he has chosen to compromise, to play politics instead of standing on principle, and to serve leaders instead of serving the people. His loyalty is not to Zambia or to God—it is to political survival.

If UPND were to wake up tomorrow and declare that they are changing the lyrics of our national anthem or even redesigning the national flag, Ba Nevers would be the first in line to praise the move. No scrutiny. No analysis. No challenge. Just blind, unshakable support. That is who he is.

A Leader in Name Only

Zambians must stop wasting time questioning his political flip-flopping. Dr. Nevers Mumba will always be Dr. Nevers Mumba—an opportunist, a political chameleon who moves with the shifting winds of power. There is no need to debate, argue, or even be surprised anymore. His opposition leadership is nothing more than a title, a disguise he wears when convenient, only to discard it when power shifts. He has turned what should be a noble responsibility into a personal survival game, leaving the people without true representation.

The Verdict: Stop Expecting Change

His nature is clear. His strategy is obvious. His survival tactics are well-documented. Whether we like it or not, history has confirmed what he truly is. It is time to stop expecting change where it will never come. Instead, let us shift our attention to real leaders—those with the courage to stand firm, to challenge wrongs, and to fight for the Zambian people, even when it is not convenient for them.

Dr. Nevers Mumba has chosen his path. Now, Zambians must choose theirs.

Witchcraft Case: It shows Zambia as a backward nation still believing in juju when countries are moving ahead and discussing Artificial Intelligence (AI)- Dickson Jere

Witchcraft Case
By Dickson Jere

In 2001, I was elected President of MISA-Zambia. One of my first assignment was to engage the judiciary on the possibility of opening up court cases for live coverage as well as allowing photographers inside court. High Court Registrar Philip Musonda (as he then was) agreed with our proposal but indicated that it required some legal reforms in that area. I, and others, have been pushing for that proposal since then.

So, I was elated when I heard that current Chief Justice Dr. Mumba Malila, SC, had decided to opened up to the live coverage of the eligibility case involving former President Edgar Lungu in the ConCourt. That presented an opportunity to assess the coverage and develop a plan going forward.

You see, when I wrote a letter in 2001 to the Judiciary, I did emphasize that live coverage should not be restricted to specific cases. This should be left to the media to decide – after all – that is why they exist. They should decide to pick what is newsworthy and probably even get Sponsorship for the coverage. The moment the judiciary begins to choose which cases to cover, then the problem begins.
The judiciary cannot be the one to dictate as to which case is important and worthy live coverage. The judiciary will also be dragged into the mud by politicians the moment it starts to decide on which case to be covered.

Here my proposal, as I submitted in 2001. The judiciary should come up with ‘Media Coverage Rules,2025’ which should provide a legal framework of life coverage of cases. The journalists will decided which case is worthy live coverage but they need to inform the court on time for preparation. It is their call!

I am both of the two worlds – journalism and law. So I understand both sides. Each media organization has own audience and agenda. You do not expect Financial Times to invest resources in the coverage of “witchcraft” story when its target audience is more finance. Such a publication will be interested in covering the KCM story, for example, in the Commercial Court.  So allow the media to decide what is newsworthy and important and not the Judiciary.

What about the witchcraft story?
My personal views as both journalist and lawyer is that it is not an important story to be given all the attention. It just ridicules the Presidency in Zambia as well as our society. It shows Zambia as a backward nation still believing in juju when countries are moving ahead and discussing Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is human interest story that is not worthy the noise.

JOB WELL DONE MR PRESIDENT:Tazama Pipelines Introduces Competitive Bidding for Open Access: A Game Changer for Zambia’s Fuel Sector

JOB WELL DONE MR PRESIDENT:Tazama Pipelines Introduces Competitive Bidding for Open Access: A Game Changer for Zambia’s Fuel Sector

NB: Energy PS, Energy Ministry procurement Head and TAZAMA pipeline Head should be on the watch list 24/7 as they seem to be working with enemies of the President daily sabotaging Mr President’s good intentions. We shall call this group working against the President as a THIEVING ENERGY CARTEL.

Tazama Pipelines introduced competitive bidding for the Open Access of Oil Marketing Companies to the pipeline for the transportation of diesel from Dar es Salaam to Zambia.

This significant step is set to bring multiple benefits, including reduced diesel prices and improved efficiency in the transportation process, which will have a direct positive impact on Zambia’s economy.

The Tazama pipeline, which plays a crucial role in transporting refined fuel products from Dar es Salaam to Zambia, has already shown substantial benefits since its inception.

By alleviating the pressure on Zambian roads, it has significantly reduced congestion and wear-and-tear on the country’s road networks.

More importantly, it has led to a reduction in the time it takes to transport diesel into Zambia, contributing to a more reliable and timely supply of fuel.

A Strategic Move for Zambia’s Future
The introduction of competitive bidding for the Tazama pipeline is part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance Zambia’s energy sector, promote economic growth, and improve access to affordable and reliable energy sources.

By reducing the cost of transporting diesel and ensuring a steady supply, this new initiative aligns with the nation’s commitment to enhancing economic stability and growth.

The results of the tender that closed on 4th February 2025, already shows that wholesale diesel prices could reduce by as much as 10%, with a proportionate reduction in retail pump prices.

The significance of diesel in industry and commerce cannot be overemphasized as it is a key input in the mining, manufacturing, transport and energy sectors of the economy.

As such, reduction in diesel prices have far reaching consequences on cost structures and the competitiveness of firms operating in the aforementioned sectors.

The Benefits of Competitive Bidding for Open Access

With the introduction of competitive bidding, Tazama Pipelines is opening up its infrastructure to multiple suppliers. This new open-access model aims to foster increased competition, leading to a variety of benefits:

Reduced Diesel Prices: Increased competition among Oil Marketing Companies is expected to result in a significant decrease in the price of diesel, benefiting consumers, businesses, and the economy at large.

A lower cost of diesel will also contribute to the reduction of fuel costs for transportation across Zambia, indirectly benefiting many diesel dependant sectors such as mining, logistics, agriculture, and manufacturing.

Improved Efficiency and Reliability: By allowing multiple players to compete for access to the pipeline, Tazama Pipelines aims to streamline fuel delivery operations, reduce bottlenecks, and ensure more consistent and reliable delivery timelines.

This enhanced efficiency will make the diesel supply chain more robust and responsive to the needs of the Zambian market.

Long-Term Economic Growth: Lower diesel prices, combined with improved transportation infrastructure, will create a more favourable environment for economic development in Zambia.

Businesses will have access to more affordable energy, which will encourage investment, promote trade, and create jobs in key sectors like retail, transportation, and agriculture.

Increased Investment in Infrastructure: The competitive bidding process will also help attract new investments in Zambia’s fuel infrastructure. More private-sector players are likely to be drawn to the open access pipeline model, ensuring better maintenance, upgrades, and the continued expansion of Zambia’s fuel transport capacity.

As the country faces one of the worst energy crises in post-independence history, occasioned principally by a debilitating drought in the 2023/2024 season, most of commerce and industry has had to supplement their energy needs with diesel powered generators
With the open access consumers shall benefit from lower costs of fuel for their daily movements providing the much-needed relief and freeing up resources for other areas of discretionary spend.

For the ordinary Zambian, lower pump prices mean lower costs of essential commodities that are part of day to day living as transport costs which are linked to pump prices are always a factor in the final selling prices.

For traders at all levels, lower prices entail lower cost of doing business, better margins and enhanced competitiveness.

For operators in the transport business, lower diesel prices allow for enhanced profitability while allowing for commuter fares to reduce and provide respite to ordinary Zambians.

GOVERNMENT’S FAILURE TO PAY OIL COMPANIES EXPOSES ECONOMIC INCOMPETENCE

GOVERNMENT’S FAILURE TO PAY OIL COMPANIES EXPOSES ECONOMIC INCOMPETENCE

Concerns over the Zambian government’s failure to settle its debts with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have sparked outrage, with critics calling it a sign of deep financial mismanagement. The administration’s inability to meet its obligations has raised serious questions about its handling of public funds, as fuel shortages and rising costs continue to cripple businesses and households across the country.

United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) leader Charles Chanda has openly questioned the government’s financial credibility, arguing that its debt to OMCs defies logic. Chanda pointed out that oil is purchased on a cash basis from international suppliers, making it unclear why local companies are waiting for government payments. He described the situation as a symptom of “serious mismanagement of resources” and called for immediate transparency.

“The government needs to explain how we got here,” Chanda stated. “If these Oil Marketing Companies are paying upfront, then why are they struggling to get paid? This is not just mismanagement; it is a clear failure in handling the economy.”

Business owners and economic analysts have echoed similar concerns, warning that the failure to settle these debts is destabilizing the fuel supply chain and placing further strain on an already struggling economy. Rising fuel costs have had a ripple effect, driving up transportation expenses, increasing production costs, and putting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) at risk of collapse.

Despite growing pressure, government officials have remained silent on the issue, failing to provide a clear explanation or a plan to address the mounting debt. Economists have warned that the longer these obligations remain unpaid, the more severe the economic consequences will be, with potential disruptions in fuel imports and further inflationary pressure.

Chanda has called for urgent intervention, warning that continued inaction could erode what little confidence remains in the administration’s ability to manage national finances. “By delaying payments, the government is actively crippling the businesses that sustain our economy. This is not leadership; this is economic sabotage,” he said.

As the crisis deepens, Zambians are left waiting for answers. With fuel at the heart of economic stability, the government’s handling of this crisis will serve as a critical test of its competence and commitment to fiscal responsibility.

Dr.Samuel Munzele Maimbo is underqualified- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Up Maimbo’s Campaign, the road ahead

Dr.Samuel Munzele Maimbo must up his game. I’ve watched pitched videos of his and his rivals YouTube campaigns.

While his opponents have held positions of Ministers of Finance and Central Bank Governor, he last held the position at the World Bank Group of Vice President for Budget, Performance Review,a junior management position in the Group.

Actually it is not a very senior nor strategic position. It’s a support function to the internal budgeting and processing department.

If you see the World Bank Organisation structure I have attached, that role is below many layers of leadership: Managing Directors, Senior Vice President, President, Executive Directors.

So while the CV is impressive, it doesn’t carry the weight of high-profile leadership or brand recognition across Africa in the sphere he wishes to lead because while he brings financial expertise as an accountant, the dominant trend favours economists to lead these entities.

He must turn and transform his vulnerabilities into strengths, and refine his messaging to focus on solutions that the African Development Bank (AfDB) can present to Africa rather than merely highlighting Africa’s problems.

1. Samuel Munzele Maimbo is World Bank Group Vice President for Budget, Performance Review.  Dr. Maimbo has been endorsed by both SADC and  COMESA economic blocks.

2. Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, was Director General of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa , was appointed in June 2015. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Mauritanian Minister of Economic Affairs and Development.

3.Amadou Hott a Senegalese economist and investment banker, and served as Minister of Economy, Planning and International Cooperation of Senegal in the Fourth Sall government.

ZISD Claims Lydia Shamalima’s Story Was Politically Motivated

ZISD Claims Lydia Shamalima’s Story Was Politically Motivated

Here is a statement they shared

We would like to clear the air regarding the Lydia Shamalima story. Contrary to popular belief, Lydia Shamalima is fully paid up by ZISD.

At ZISD, player welfare comes first. That is why, for the past five years, we have accommodated Lydia in our clubhouse, providing her with all necessities, including her salary and winning bonuses. Her recent withdrawal from the clubhouse was a decision made by her family for reasons best known to them.

We are shocked to see videos circulating on social media, especially since Lydia was with us during our midweek fixture against Nkwazi on Thursday. No grievances were raised with the relevant ZISD officials, despite the existing channels available for such matters.

Additionally, a few details in the circulating report need to be corrected. Lydia Shamalima is not 17 years old, as stated, but is actually 19 years old. She is also a member of the Under-20 team, not the Under-17 team. It is also important to note that Lydia is not the sole provider for her family, as she has an older sister who also contributes to the family’s well-being. However, that does not lighten the severity of the issue at hand.

It is also important to highlight that ZISD has always stood by Lydia and her family in times of need. When her family faced challenges, including illnesses and funerals—such as the passing of her grandfather a few months ago—we provided our full support. Our commitment to player welfare extends beyond the pitch, ensuring that our players and their families receive the assistance they need during difficult times.

The timing of this publication appears politically motivated, as our General Secretary, Elijah Jani Lungu, is set to stand for the position of ZPL Chairman on 16th March 2025.

As a founding member of the Women’s Super League, ZISD has invested over 10 million Kwacha into women’s football over the past five years, with little to no support. The league itself has not been funded, and ZISD has only received K100,000 in total over that period. Despite this, our club has contributed immensely to Zambian football by producing top national team players, including:

Evarine Katongo (World Cup, WAFCON, Olympics, Senior COSAFA Champion)

Lungowe Namasiku (2nd Top Scorer in the League 2023/24 Season, Senior COSAFA Champion)

Jackline Chomba (Senior COSAFA Champion)

Elizabeth Mwale (U20 COSAFA Champion)

Inonge Kaloustian (Most Influential Local Player of 2024)

Lydia Shamalima (U20 COSAFA Champion)

Masela Sekeseke (U17 COSAFA Champion)

Zambia’s women’s teams have generated over $5 million for the country, yet women’s football continues to receive the raw end of the stick and has little to show for its contributions. If this lack of support continues, situations like Lydia’s will not be the exception but the norm in women’s football.

Furthermore, despite the outstanding success of women’s teams in Zambia, we continue to be denied a voice in the game. Women’s teams have been denied the fundamental right to vote, leaving clubs to carry the full burden of development without any representation in decision-making. In the 21st century, this should not be the case, yet it remains the reality we face as a nation. True change will only happen when women’s teams are granted voting rights and a say in the future of Zambian football.

This issue is further compounded by families making young players, like Lydia, breadwinners. This pressure forces players to focus more on financial benefits rather than developing their talents, which ultimately hinders their personal growth and mastery of the game, which in the end limits the player’s earning capacity as football is a relatively short career.

ZISD believes in our holistic approach to player development, both on and off the field. As part of this commitment, Lydia has been offered multiple opportunities for education, which she has passed on. We strongly encourage all our players to invest in their education alongside their football careers to ensure a secure and sustainable future. Hence why we offer our players free access to ZISD College Prep, which allows them to study in America, as we have seen with ZISD players like Chanda Maambo, who went on to become a student-athlete at Kenyon College in the USA.

As a club, Lydia remains one of our own and is always welcome at Kwapu Kwapu Nation—from Chainda to the world.

For God, Country, and ZISD.

Police call on Interpol to nab Libyan fugitive

Police call on Interpol to nab Libyan fugitive

THE Zambia Police Service has engaged International Criminal Police Organization(INTERPOL) to help locate fugitive former LAICO Ltd General Manager, Nabill Sobhi Ibrahem Elmurabet a Libyan National, who is needed in court on bench warrant.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BawHyWm1t/?mibextid=oFDknk

A police officer informed Lusaka principal resident magistrate, Idah Phiri that efforts are being made to ensure the accused is brought before court.

Elmurabet has repeatedly missed court proceedings without any reasons, prompting the court to issue a bench warrant against him last year.

The suspect has been at large since November 2024.

Meanwhile, magistrate Phiri has ordered two of Elmurabet’s sureties to pay  K50,000 each, payable within 14 days for failing to present the accused person before court.

When asked to explain why the accused person was missing court proceedings, one of the sureties, Gregory Tembo said he does not know where he is and cannot find him.

“We communicate with him through email but I don’t know where he is, I last saw him in November last year at office,” he said.

State prosecutor, Michael Nyundwe also asked if the accused has family in Zambia, Tembo said he doesn’t have any family in Zambia.

“Does he own any property in Zambia?” Nyundwe asked. “No”, the surety said.

Allegations are that Elmurabet on October 3, 2022, in Lusaka, forged a document,Patents and Company Registration Agency (PACRA) Form 10 Part C—purporting that it was issued and signed by LAICO-Zambia Limited director Shukri Esidieg and Marilyn Sipia Mwamba, when in fact it was not.

It is also alleged that Elmurabet on October 3, 2022 in Lusaka, knowingly and fraudulently, uttered a false document namely Patents and Company Registration Agency form 10 part C dated 3rd October, 2022 in the names of Eljaiedi and Mwamba to the Registry at PACRA.

Elmurabet pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

And the Police also informed the court that efforts to locate the accused were made including contacting his former employer who confirmed termination of his contract.

Police wrote a letter to interpol, placing the accused on wanted list.

The court analyzed the sureties submissions, and decided that the sureties be fined K50,000 each as penalties for failing to present an accused or remanded in custody.

The Great Zambian Witch Trial: A Courtroom Spectacle of Political Desperation

The Great Zambian Witch Trial: A Courtroom Spectacle of Political Desperation

By Dr Mwelwa

The Chief Justice, in his infinite wisdom, has decided that Zambia needs a new prime-time spectacle. Forget economic woes, forget the collapsing Kwacha, forget the untold mysteries of how a foreign plane laden with millions of dollars made a cameo appearance at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, only to vanish into thin air. That’s old news. That’s boring. That’s too ordinary. What Zambia truly needs, what the world must see, is a courtroom drama starring chameleons, witches, and the terrifying forces of dark magic.

And so, the curtains rise on this great national production, directed not by logic, not by justice, but by a higher power—the sacred duty of political expediency. The Chief Justice, now the chief puppeteer, has decreed that the public must feast their eyes on this grand festival of absurdity. Live television coverage, no less! Because nothing screams modern governance like a courtroom full of men debating whether an iguana carried out an assassination attempt.

It is a story so rich, so intoxicating, that even the world’s most celebrated satirists must be biting their nails in jealousy. Hollywood screenwriters are surely taking notes. An entire government, armed with power, intelligence agencies, forensic tools, and investigative machinery, has sat down, deliberated, and reached the irrefutable conclusion that a group of witches, under the careful guidance of a politician, conspired against the President. The weapons of war? Spells, charms, and yes—reptilian operatives.

Meanwhile, across the world, newsrooms are rolling on the floor with laughter. From New York to London, Paris to Johannesburg, headlines are crafted with the kind of giddy amusement that only Africa can provide. “Witchcraft Trial in 2025,” they will write, slotting Zambia neatly into their cherished narrative of a continent still battling the ghosts of the past. Scientists, historians, and rational human beings alike will pause to ask: what in the name of jurisprudence is happening?

Yet, behind the grand comedic façade, there lies a calculated motive. This is no mere trial of witches. This is no mere pursuit of truth. No, this is yet another artful stroke in the great political canvas—a smear campaign so extravagant it would make Machiavelli blush. The name they want to drag through the mud is predictable. The script is familiar. The former President, Edgar Lungu, must be linked to anything and everything that can be packaged into a scandal. And so, the accusations swirl, the dots are connected with invisible ink, and the public is invited to gasp in horror at the thought that somewhere, in the dead of night, a group of hooded figures gathered to whisper incantations against the Head of State.

But wait—why stop at just witches? Why not throw in some vampires? Maybe a werewolf or two? Perhaps, if the judiciary hurries, they can get a confession from a haunted tree in Eastern Province. It would be a spectacular addition to the show. After all, if the goal is to entertain rather than to uphold the rule of law, why not go all the way?

In all of this, the judiciary, that noble institution meant to stand as the last bastion of fairness and reason, has been turned into a carnival act. The Chief Justice, instead of upholding dignity, has chosen to preside over a farce. He is no longer a steward of justice but an enthusiastic stage manager, ensuring that the cameras capture every moment of this political theater.

It is no secret that the rot in government has long seeped into the judiciary, but now, the stench is undeniable. It wafts through the courts, through the chambers, through the hollowed-out remains of what should be an independent legal system. And so, the people watch, half in disbelief, half in exhaustion, as the most pressing national issues are ignored in favor of this supernatural soap opera.

Perhaps, when the dust settles and the chameleons are acquitted due to lack of evidence, the country can return to more pressing matters. Perhaps, when a new government arrives, sanity will be restored, and those who turned the judiciary into a circus will be shown the exit door. Until then, we watch, we laugh, and we wait for the next chapter in this surreal tale of political desperation.

SAD: A 22-YEAR-OLD MBALA MAN HAS LOST K10,000 TO A SCAMMER WHO PROMISED HIM A JOB IN THE ZAMBIA ARMY

0

A 22-YEAR-OLD man of Mbala identified as Alex Sinkonde has lost over K10,000 to a scammer identified as Harrison Kapisha, who promised him a job in Zambia Army.

Alex and his father, Abel Chimfwembe, spent three nights at the intercity bus terminus upon reaching Lusaka as Mr Kapisha could not show up to receive them as earlier agreed.

Mr Sinkonde told Sunday Mail that it all began when he received a message from a man who introduced himself as Harrison Kapisha informing him that the army was in the process of replacing some of its employees.

“He asked me to apply for the job if I was interested and I did because I have always wanted to join the army. Mr Kapisha told me to send him K85 for the application letter and copies of my NRC and Grade 12 results, which I did. I filled in the application letter and sent it to him on WhatsApp.

“He told me that my application was logged in towards the end of the application window and that the names of successful candidates would soon be announced. He later sent me a document and asked me to check if my name was among those who were recruited in the army,” Mr Sinkonde said.

Mr Sinkonde spotted his name on page 18 of the document sent by Mr Kapisha.

After this, Mr Kapisha asked him to send money meant to buy food and materials he would need whilst undergoing training.

Mr Kapisha sent a list of things to Mr Sinkonde that needed to be bought, amounting to K10,040.

“I sent him the money and he advised me to travel to Lusaka on February 10, 2025. He also advised that I travel with my father so that he can witness the whole process. I came to Lusaka with my father on Monday. On our way, I regularly communicated with Mr Kapisha, who promised to receive us in Lusaka.

“When we reached intercity bus terminus, I called him again and he said he would come within 15 minutes. We waited for more than 15 minutes but he did not show up. I tried to call him again but the phone was off. We slept at intercity and the following day, I tried to call him but his phone was constantly off,” Mr Sinkonde said.

Sensing a scam, Mr Sinkonde and his father decided to report the matter to Lusaka Central Police Station but they were referred to army headquarters.

He said when they got there, an army officer tried to check the WhatsApp profile picture for Mr Kapisha and discovered that there was a picture of the army commander.

HH Witchcraft Trial Disgraceful–HARRY KALABA

HH Witchcraft Trial Disgraceful–HARRY KALABA
…‘we should be televising AI’

16.02.25

At such a critical time in the democratic and economic dispensation of Zambia, we are deeply disappointed that President Hichilema’s government is prioritising a witchcraft trial live in the courts of law amidst a myriad of many other important issues facing the nation.

As Citizens First, we are further perturbed and flabbergasted that a state owned newspaper like the Zambia Daily Mail could give front page prominence to a mundane announcement of this ‘ witch hunt’ circus using state resources and time.
Televising a witchcraft trial is shamefully unprecedented in Zambia which is a christian nation.

“We think its just wrong and cheap on all levels for Zambia to be known as the first country in the region, if not the continent to lend credence to witchcraft at a time others are televising ‘ Artificial Intelligence.”

It is wrong for us to promote and lend credence to witchcraft and the occult as a christian nation when other countries are sending rockets into outer space to explore further and better life using science.
When the witchcraft story commences in the Zambian courts, note that international mainstream media will be around to help mock us around the world you are talking CNN, BBC, VOA etc.

They will all be here to showcase to the world how cheap we have become under Mr HH’s witchcraft era when we  worship and extol black magic instead of laboratory science.

We got here fellow citizens when someone reported to the Zambian police that a man of Zambian citizenship working with a Mozambican fellow, apparently intended to use a chameleon in a voodoo spell to harm President HH.

Apparently Mr Hichilema fell off balance when he was  informed of the grand scheme by the Grand Wizard leading to an arrest and now the pending live trial of a chameleon and two men.

As CF President, and with great shame we firmly believe that Mr Hichilema should have directed efforts towards:

1. Reducing the price of mealie meal
2. Reducing the price of petrol and diesel
3. Reducing the number of pupils in overcrowded classrooms with overworked teachers
4. Reducing the hours illegally detained Zambians are staying in overcrowded prisons.

It is our considered view that televising a witch hunt will take Mr. Hichilema nowhere just as it won’t buy him any popularity because people are hungry and jobless.

‘Stop the witchhunt and fix the economy like you promised instead of this tactic of diverting Zambians attention from the real issues of hunger and load shedding.’

Zambia’s fuel debt to Suppliers ‘Increasing Inorder to Reduce’- Miles  Sampa

Zambia’s fuel debt to Suppliers ‘Increasing Inorder to Reduce’.

MBS16.02.2025

Last week the Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote stated in Parliament that Zambia’s fuel debt was  $597 million in 2021 (when the PF exited government) and now stands at $735 million as at Dec 31, 2024. Instead of the UPND government reducing the debt as the promised to, they have instead increased it by 23%. Their kokai theorem of “Increasing in order to Reduce definitely” definitely at play.

Arithmetics are not adding up given that they essentially removed subsidy on fuel since 2021 and been selling fuel to motorists at market prices . This on top of the fuel levy (tax) that is slapped on consumers and toll gate fees gives the treasury millions of dollars surplus funds to have theirs fuel  books.

So why has the UPND government not been liquidating the fuel date. Surely if they have money to undertake expensive unnecessary face redesign of the Kwacha, they also must have money to repay the fuel debt.

Other than in the fertilizer industry, the fuel sector is one area that has seen huge corruption and scandals since 2021. Talk of the Agro fuel and its owner Sashi Patel grande corruption scandal. In 2021 they were given to run the Tazama pipe line from Dar es salaam to Indeni. The then not in use pipeline had stock worth millions of dollars that needed or needs to has to be inside the pipeline at any point in time whether the line is operational or not. Agro fuel sold the stock they found in the pipeline and pocketed the money sharing profits with whoever.

Then Government had to avail new funding to restock the pipe line so Sashi (a close associate of those in the corridors of power) can restart the pipeline operations. So he was funded for the start up stock to be in the pipeline and for the one offloaded at Indeni for the last 4 years. Then a few weeks ago  the National was told his contract had been terminated as if they were told when he was contracted. On top of the first pipeline stock Agro fuel inherited and did not pay for, they made huge ‘stinking’ USD profits out of government and externalised.

This huge loot of money scrupulously  made last 4 years by Agro fuel is what should have been used to liquidate the now almost doubled fuel debt between 2021 and 2025.

The UPND government has had the capacity to liquidate this and all other local debts but they are just not good payers of what they owe to people or companies. They are WIIFU (What’s In It For Us) masters before they can pay anyone otherwise they will never pay.

This has led to some oil companies owed to sue this government in international courts. The likes of  Sahara energy sued and  won in a Belgium court. Won’t be surprised to hear bailiffs in action on the international scene against Zambia.

Corruption gone grande in Zambia and the fuel procurement by Agro fuel  is a classic example.  The non payment and ballooning of the oil debt by government despite their promises to do so pre 2021, is another classic example of their “ Increasing in order to Reduce” faith and belief. How else to describe a debt to fuel suppliers growing from $597M to $735M in 4 years. Grande Corruption.

Ten Players who Shaped Zambian Football

0

GUEST ARTICLE: Ten Players who Shaped Zambian Football

By Ponga Liwewe

These are ten players who, in their careers, were part of pivotal moments and periods that were instrumental in Zambia’s football’s sucess.

It is NOT a list of Zambia’s greatest players and is NOT in chronological order

1. Godfrey Chitalu

Nicknamed ‘Ucar’ after a popular battery brand manufactured by Union Carbide, Godfrey Chitalu broke barriers that no Zambian player would ever match. He was named Zambian Footballer of the Year on five occasions, holds the record for the highest number of goals scored in a single season, 107, and is ranks 5th on the FIFA list of scorers in international football with 79 goals. He first exploded on the scene for Kitwe United earning a reputation as the ‘bad’ boy of Zambian football, while scoring prolifically for the Kitwe side. He later moved to Kabwe Warriors where he became a national hero who would etch his name in Zambian football history forever.

2. Christopher Katongo

Led Zambia to victory in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring three goals to share the top scorers award. His exemplary leadership drove a group of players rated far below their opponents to an unexpected cup win that ranks as the greatest shock in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations. He finished the 2007 season in the South African PSL as top scorer with 15 goals despite leaving for Denmark halfway through. In the Zambia national team his leadership was inspiration and he drove a team of average players to greater heights with the guidance of his coach Herve Renard. His drive and determination took him to Denmark, Germany, Greece, China and back to South Africa. But for him, Zambia would not have reached the heights they did in 2012.

3. Kalusha Bwalya

He became the most recognized player in Zambian football history by becoming the only player from Southern Africa to win the prestigious African Footballer of the Year Award in 1988 after Zambia’s outstanding performance at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. He scored six goals in four matches at the tournament, coming second to Brazil’s Romario who scored seven, but played two more matches. His six goals at the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations makes him the highest Zambian scorer at a single tournament. On the pitch, he was a marvel to watch, leading a talented team to constant Africa Cup appearances in 1986, 1990, 1992,1994,1996,1998,2000, and 2002. His career took him to Belgium, Holland, and Mexico.

4. Wisdom Chansa

He became the only Zambian player to lead his team to a continental title when Power Dynamos beat Nigeria’s BBC Lions to win the African Cup Winners Cup in 1991, and was instrumental in the team that won its first league title in 1984. He captained the Power Dynamos team to their second ever league title in 1991, the year of their African success. The previous season, 1990, he led them to win three cup competitions in one season. A natural leader, his tireless work rate and influence on his team-mates made Power Dynamos one of Zambia’s most successful club sides in the country’s football history. Fans chanted his name for both club and country, one of the few players to win such an acclaim.

5. Freddie Mwila

He was one of the first Zambian players to play in England for Aston Villa alongside Emment Kapengwe. His goalscoring prowess made him one of the best strikers of his era. Though Zambian players would vanish from European football for over a decade until the eighties, he is recognized as a pacesetter in breaking a barrier by playing in England after having earlier made his mark at Atlanta Chiefs in the USA in the National Soccer League, NSL. Before his departure overseas he had been a key player for Rhokana United, scoring freely and it was this that would grab the attention of the former West Ham player Phil Woosnam who would take him to an unprecedented move overseas.

6. Dickson Makwaza

Dickson Makwaza is recognized for leading Zambia to the final of the 1974 Africa Cup of Nations where against all expectation he captained Zambia against the powerful Zaire Leopards, Africa’s dominant team at that time. The young Zambian side took a highly experienced Zaire team to a replay, making history in the process in the only final that has gone to a second match in CAF history with the first a 2-2 draw and Zambia losing the replay, 2-0. As a pillar at the back for both Mufulira Wanderers and Zambia, Makwaza led by example as a defensive stalwart and rallied his team-mates behind the cause at the time, taking Zambia to the highest levels of the African game where they would stay for many decades.

7. Kapambwe Mulenga

When Nkana FC became the most dominant club side in Zambian football history, no other player epitomised what the club stood for more than’Gents Power’ Kapambwe Mulenga. Robust at the back and renowned for his aggressive tacking, he also had a delicate touch that allowed him to play creatively in midfield. By far the most popular player in the team, he always gave 100% and Nkana’s nine titles in twelve years between the eighties and nineties stand out as testament to a team that totally dominated the local scene. His smooth transition to the national team equally endeared him in the hearts of fans countrywide.

8. Peter Kaumba

A rampaging winger down the left flank who devastated defences for both club and country, between 1980 and 1994, Peter Kaumba was the most dominant player in Zambian football. In 1982 he was the dominant figure in a Power Dynamos team that reached the final of the 1982 Africa Cup Winners Cup against Egypt’s Arab Contractors, becoming the first Zambian team to reach an African final. That year he was the league’s top scorer, Footballer of the Year and Sportsman of the Year. Alongside the great Alex Chola, he played a pivotal role in taking Power Dynamos to the summit of Zambian club football. Revered by the Power Dnamos faithful, his entrance into the pitch brought the crowd to its feet as he jogged majestically around the perimeter. He was voted Africa’s best left winger at the 1982 Africa Cup in Libya. He had a spell with top African side Africa Sport in Cote d’Ivoire between 1983 and 1984.

9. Alex Chola

Zambia’s most skillful player ever, Alex Chola left his indelible mark on Zambian football with his unbelievable array of football skills that mesmerised football fans across the country and in African football. The ‘Master Dribbler’ tore defences to shreds with immense dribbling ability and was equally adept at scoring goals, qualities that made him valuable equally as a centre-forward or second striker. His move from Mufulira Blackpool to Power Dynamos transformed the Kitwe side, drawing thousands of fans to the fast-rising team and making them a household name in Zambian football. Across Africa, his was the first name on lips of rival fans who longed to see his unmatched ability on the ball. Thousands poured through the turnstiles to see him weave his magic and they never left disappointed. He played over 100 times for Zambia and won the 1976 Footballer of the Year award.

10. Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu

As Zambia’s football growth accelerated in the sixties, Zambia’s first football superstar. Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndlovu, emerged from Mufulira, thrilling crowds across the country with skills that were nothing short of amazing. Grounds around the country were filled, and the Copperbelt became the launch pad for the start of an era that would see Zambia begin to become competitive against Africa’s best at continental football. He led Mufulira Wanderers to five league titles between 1963 and 1969. Clad in the green and white stripes of Mufulira Wanderers, Zoom took Zambian football to the start of a new era as the popularity of the game propelled its players to new highs. Improved international performances and open, attacking football thrived across the Copperbelt igniting the flames that would lead to a golden era for Zambian football.

Youssouf Beats Raila Odinga To Become AU Commission Chairman

Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, a Djiboutian diplomat, has been elected as the chairman of the African Union’s executive commission.

The election was held during the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In a post on X on Saturday, Nigeria’s presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that Youssouf defeated Raila Odinga of Kenya to become chairman after five rounds of voting.

According to him, observers expected Odinga to win, but after a “more convincing” speech, Youssouf swung the votes in his favour.

“Youssouf’s emergence stunned Odinga, who observers expected to win.

“However, Odinga spent three minutes out of the five allowed reviewing the history of Pan-Africanism and African solidarity. He had not spoken about his vision when the electronic timer cut him off.

“In contrast, Youssouf sounded more convincing when presenting his vision. Odinga had started well by leading in the first round, only to lose votes even after the third candidate from Madagascar dropped off.

Youssouf received 33 votes to defeat Odinga and now takes over from Moussa Faki Mahamat of Chad, who spent two terms of 4 years each.

The 59-year-old career diplomat has been the foreign minister of Djibouti since 2005.

He was previously Djibouti’s ambassador to Egypt and has also served as foreign minister in the governments of three presidents.

He speaks English, French and Arabic, and, though he is considered an outside contender, observers have praised his low-key campaign.

On Thursday, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu arrived in Addis Ababa to participate in the session.

Tinubu was received at the airport by the Ethiopian Deputy Chief of Protocol, Eshetu Legesse; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; and the charge d’affaires of the Nigerian embassy in Ethiopia, Ambassador Nasir Aminu.

Ambassador Tuggar later briefed President Tinubu about the summit and some diplomatic wins for the country, a session that stretched until about 2 a.m. on Friday.

Among the wins was the re-election of Ambassador Bankole Adeoye as African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security.

Nigeria also retained its seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council, reaffirming, in the words of Ambassador Tuggar, “Nigeria’s leadership and commitment to peace and security on the continent.”

At the briefing were Mr Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance; Abubakar Badaru, Minister of Defence; Jumoke Oduwole, the Minister of Trade and Investment; Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation; Muhammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation; Balarabe Abbas Lawal, Minister of Environment; and Doris Uzoka-Anite, Minister of State for Finance.

Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, and Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of Naval Staff, also attended the briefing.

This year’s AU summit, under the theme “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” focuses on reparatory justice and racial healing.

Tinubu was billed to deliver a speech at the summit-level meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council, focusing on current security challenges on the continent, including the escalation of conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Police update shows woman NFL star Kadarius Toney allegedly strangled ‘was 7 months pregnant’

Police have released an update on NFL star Kadarius Toney’s arrest, indicating that the woman he allegedly strangled was seven months pregnant and holding her daughter when he attacked her.

Toney has over the years etched his name in the history books as he’s won the Super Bowl twice with the Chiefs.

He was arrested on February 6 on counts of aggravated assault-strangulation and obstructing or harassing 911 calls, as per online records obtained by TMZ.

A 911 audio from the woman, who reportedly was Toney’s girlfriend, was released on Thursday.

In the audio, the woman shared that she was nearing her final month of delivery as Toney attacked her in Douglasville, Georgia.

Toney’s girlfriend stated that she was in good health and declined to receive medical attention.

However, she revealed she had fled to her neighbor’s house without footwear to remove herself from the home she was sharing with Toney.

A police report viewed by TMZ shows that police say the woman had red marks on her neck and petechial hemorrhaging in her eyes.

Officers also revealed that the NFL star stopped the woman from reaching out to authorities as he denied her access to her phone.

On January 15, an arrest warrant was issued for Toney to be apprehended with his bond set at $25,000 for each of the two charges against him.

Toney allegedly squeezed a woman’s throat as per documents provided to TMZ by cops ‘with enough force to cause her to be unable to breath.’

Records indicate that he was not in custody as of February 7.

26-year-old Toney featured in three games for the Cleveland Browns last season before he was released in December after a haunting penalty and a muffed punt in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Toney was a first-round pick by the New York Giants in 2021 and was later traded to the Kansas City Chiefs mid-season of the 2022 campaign.

NFL’s Kadarius Toney played a good part in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LVII that helped grant the Chiefs a 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The new revelation comes as a shock to his teammates and fans, who will be eyeing how the entire situation unfolds in the coming days.

Rihanna’s emotional words to sons during A$AP Rocky’s assault trial

0

Rihanna shared an emotional moment with her two children during the closing arguments of A$AP Rocky’s weapons assault trial in Los Angeles. The Diamonds singer, 36, has attended court five times in support of Rocky, with whom she shares sons RZA, 2, and Riot, 1.

She was seen at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center on Thursday, briefly joining Rocky during a break. The rapper, 36, faces up to 24 years in prison for allegedly shooting his former friend A$AP Relli in 2021, as reported by Daily Mail.

During a courtroom break, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky stepped into the hallway, each holding one of their children. As the break ended, Rihanna was heard telling their toddlers, “wish daddy good luck.”

Rocky then shared a heartfelt moment, kissing both Rihanna and their children before returning to the courtroom.

Rihanna briefly exited the courtroom through a back door before returning without her children.

Earlier in the day, she arrived at the courthouse in heavy rain, with security holding umbrellas over her and her kids. The Love On The Brain singer wore a black leather trench coat with a caped detail, paired with tan crocodile-embossed boots. Her children, dressed in dark navy suits, accompanied her to support A$AP Rocky.

A$AP Rocky, born Rakim Athelaston Mayers, was arrested in April 2022 upon returning to Los Angeles from Barbados with Rihanna. He now faces two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic weapon but has pleaded not guilty.

Before opening statements in January, Rocky rejected a plea deal that included six months in jail, a seven-year suspended sentence, and three years of probation.

The rapper was expected to take the stand in his trial but has chosen not to testify in his defense. He has maintained that he was carrying a prop gun for security on the night of the alleged incident.

A$AP Rocky’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, supported his client’s claim, stating that the gun involved was a starter pistol that only fired blanks.

Earlier this week, Rocky’s tour manager, Lou Levin, testified that he advised the rapper to carry the prop gun following a break-in at his home by a stalker and other security concerns.

“Security and I thought it would be a good idea, because of the prior violence,” Levin said. “It’s just a nonlethal form of self-defense.”

Levin testified that he obtained the prop gun from a video shoot in the summer of 2021, months before the incident. He returned it to the co-director, but after A$AP Rocky’s arrest, the gun was no longer available.

The defense stated they did not have the starter pistol, which authorities also failed to recover. Levin also confirmed that an ammunition magazine found at Rocky’s home belonged to him.

Prosecutors, however, called Levin’s story a lie, while Levin insisted it was the truth. The prosecution alleges that on November 6, 2021, Rocky pointed a gun at his former friend during a confrontation and shot at him, causing minor injuries.

A$AP Relli, whose real name is Terell Ephron, testified against A$AP Rocky, claiming the rapper pointed a gun at his stomach, threatened to kill him, and fired at least four shots.

Ephron said one shot hit his hand, and he reported the incident the following day. Ephron recovered two 9mm shell casings from the scene, but the weapon allegedly used by Rocky was never found.

Ephron, a former friend and collaborator of Mayers, said their relationship began in high school but soured as Mayers’ fame grew, especially when he started backing out of business deals.

At pre-trial hearings in November, A$AP Rocky’s attorneys sought to exclude surveillance footage of him holding a gun, arguing it should not be admissible. Prosecutors contend the video shows Rocky firing the weapon, a claim his lawyers deny.

Detective Frank Flores of the Los Angeles Police Department testified that the footage showed a gun in Rocky’s hand, but under cross-examination, he admitted the weapon was never recovered.

A$AP Rocky, a member of the A$AP Mob collective, which was formed in 2005, joined the group in 2007. After closing arguments on Thursday, the jury began deliberations in his trial.

Rihanna, who first appeared in the Los Angeles courtroom late last month, reportedly arrived in a blacked-out SUV and took secretive steps to avoid attention, entering through an underground parking lot and a hidden elevator.

An insider shared with DailyMail.com that Rihanna is “terrified” Rocky could face prison time.

The source expressed that the “important legal drama in her life” could “have real heartbreaking consequences.”

“A$AP goes to trial next month for the alleged shooting and if convicted he could be sentenced to prison.”

The insider added, “Rihanna and A$AP have been on a serious do-good / be-loved PR mission recently, which is completely opposite of how they like to live their lives…”

“She is terrified of him going to prison. She has two kids at home that she does not want to raise on her own.”

Fan reacts as Drake surprises her with on-stage gender reveal and $50K gift

Drake made an Australian fan’s dream come true during his concert at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena. The 38-year-old rapper singled out concertgoer Sally Soumaya for special attention while performing on Wednesday night, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Sally posted a TikTok video of Drake revealing the gender of her yet to be born baby. The video started with a photo of Sally and a friend standing in front of the venue, with a sign reading, “Do my gender reveal”.

The act caught the rapper’s attention, who accepted their request. “This girl has a sign right here that says: ‘Do my gender reveal’,” Drake said to the audience between songs.

As Sally handed a note with her baby’s gender to the stage, Drake eagerly embraced the moment, visibly excited to be part of the special announcement.

“This is life-changing. Oh, what do we think it is?,” he asked before thanking Sally for letting him make the big announcement.

“It says right here that it indicates that the fetus is a mini Drake,” he said revealing that the mom-to-be was going to have a baby boy.

Drake went beyond just the gender reveal, generously announcing that he would also be giving the expecting mother financial support.

“Sally’s having a boy and Sally’s getting $50,000 AUD from me,” Drake added to rapturous applause from the crowd.

Sally described the moment as unforgettable in the caption of her video.

“I will never recover from this! Drake does my baby’s gender reveal,” she wrote.

Her post sparked a wave of comments from followers, with many joking that she won’t have a hard time choosing a name for her baby after Drake’s gesture.

“I feel like his middle name gotta be Drake,” one follower commented.

Another chimed in with: “Generational fumble if you don’t name him Aubrey,” referencing the rapper’s given name Aubrey Drake Graham.

Drake’s generous gesture followed a major casino win during his trip to Melbourne.

DJ Gordo, who is traveling with the rapper, shared an Instagram story of a jubilant Drake celebrating in an elevator, holding a thick stack of casino tokens.

Dressed casually in a Texas Football T-shirt and cap, the rapper appeared in high spirits. Gordo hinted at the extent of Drake’s luck, suggesting he had won over half a million dollars at Crown Casino.

“700k for lunch,” he cheekily captioned the video.

Drake previously shared – and quickly deleted – a photo of his lap covered in $25,000 casino tokens.

“Melbourne giving me the welcome back pack,” he boasted. “Finally…a casino showing love in Australia,” with a laugh-cry emoji.

Drake has been generously spending his casino winnings during the Australian leg of his Anita Max Win tour. After his Melbourne show, he treated his entourage and backstage guests to a lavish $2,651 Nando’s feast.

Beyond fast food, the One Dance rapper and his entourage have been indulging in fine dining at Melbourne’s top restaurants, including Crown-owned Nobu and Maison Bâtard.

King Misuzulu Fears for His Life Amid Assassination Threat, Appeals to President Cyril Ramaphosa After Protection Security is Reduced

Zulu King Misuzulu Fears for His Life Amid Assassination Threat, Appeals to President Cyril Ramaphosa After Protection Security is Reduced

King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has urgently appealed to President Cyril Ramaphosa after his Presidential Protection Services security detail was reportedly reduced.

The move has sparked widespread concern, with the King fearing for his safety and even raising the specter of potential assassination.

This development comes amid ongoing tensions and previous security concerns within the royal household, News24 reveals.

Social Media Erupts Over Royal Security Debate
The reduction in the King’s security detail has ignited a fiery debate on social media. While some have criticized the government for failing to protect the monarch, others have questioned why the King, who receives substantial financial support from the state, does not invest in private security.

However, not all reactions were sympathetic. Some questioned the necessity of extensive security.

Here are some of the reactions;

@bxnzow;

A king gets protection wherever he goes by his people automatically, this thing of 24 bodyguards is nonsense.

@njabulo_success;

A King that ask for protection from a president is a clown king 🤣🤣

@Tselekane;

Wait don’t u have amabhuto? You also get paid the highest amongst all kings. Pay for ur own security

@Mufasa2030;

Our king needs to be protected

By all means necessary

What would it say about us if we fail such a simple task

Previous Security Concerns Resurface
This is not the first time King Misuzulu has expressed concerns about his safety. In September 2024, he raised alarms over a senior officer from the Presidential Protection Services assigned to him. In a letter to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, the King requested the officer’s immediate removal, citing serious safety concerns related to “this official being around my presence and the royal households.”

Additionally, the King voiced disappointment over the unexplained withdrawal of the Counter-Assault Team, emphasizing the need for an investigation into these security lapses.

A History of Security Controversies

The current situation echoes past controversies surrounding the King’s protection. In 2021, reports surfaced that the South African Police Service had withdrawn security services for the monarch. However, police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo denied these claims, stating that royal protection is based on ongoing threat assessments and had not been withdrawn.

The case has been handed over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further handling. The suspect is expected to appear before the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 17 February 2025.

Shooting Incident Sparks Reactions
The shocking incident has sparked a wave of reactions on social media. Netizens disputed her argument that it was self-defense.

Here are some of the reactions;

@W77683Willy;

It wasn’t self defense, she knows something beyond that. Police officer killing her own son, killing her partner, etc , is huge. He she has a hidden agenda.

@Malope

Headshots? Headshots are rarely self-defense…and on two “alleged” perpetrators, questionable…however, her loss is unimaginable…and we wish Naledi a speedy recovery…

@GodzilaTR;

How do you kill your son ? I think there was a fight between the son and mom but why shot the GF?

@telltalebells;

Plot twist. The knife was planted by the shooter to support self defence claim.

Why was the girl shot?

Musiala Explains Why He Rejected Flopping Man City, Others To Sign New Bayern Deal

Jamal Musiala has signed a new five-year contract with Bayern Munich, keeping him at the club until 2030 to end the speculations about his future.

The German forward was linked with a move to Manchester City, Barcelona, and Real Madrid before he decided to extend his stay at the Allianz Arena.

Musiala joined Bayern Munich from Chelsea academy in 2019, and he has gone on to establish himself as a key player for the club with over 200 appearances.

The 21-year-old has opened up on the reason he decided to commit his future to Bayern Munich despite strong links from other top clubs.

He said, “I took my first steps in professional football here and firmly believe we can achieve something big with this club in the coming years.

“We’ve got a lot of things we want to achieve. I’m excited for everything that’s to come.

“Bayern is one of the biggest clubs in the world. I took my first steps in professional football here and firmly believe we can achieve something big with this club in the coming years.”

Bayern Munich Sporting Director Christoph Freund hailed Musiala’s decision to extend his stay at the club with a long-term deal.

He said, “Jamal Musiala always creates genius solutions with his outstanding ability on the pitch. That’s his gift.

“Despite his young age, he already holds a lot of responsibility. You can sense that he quickly absorbed the Bayern philosophy at the FC Bayern Campus. We’re delighted to be taking on our lofty goals with him in the coming years.”

According to reports in Germany, Musiala has a two-level release clause inserted into his new contract.

The release clause is reportedly set at 175 million euros ($183m) two years before his contract expires and falls to 100 million in the final year.

Musiala has scored 58 goals and recorded 31 assists for Bayern Munich since making his debut in 2019.

He has also led the club to four Bundesliga titles, three German Supercups, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup during his time in Munich.

In March 2021, Musiala became Germany’s fourth-youngest debutant and youngest since Uwe Seeler.

He has since earned 38 senior caps, scoring seven goals and competing at Euro 2020, the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, where he finished as the competition’s joint-top scorer.

Musiala has scored 15 goals and made eight assists in 30 games for his club. He will be hoping to add to the tally when Bayern Munich takes on Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday in the Bundesliga.

Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies also signed a new five-year contract with the club a week ago, following in the footsteps of Manuel Neuer, who signed a new one-year contract to extend his stay at the club.

Marmoush Makes History As Man City Thrash Newcastle 4:0

0

Omar Marmoush opened his Premier League account with a stunning hat trick for Manchester City in the 4-0 win over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The January signing produced an impressive performance to lead the hosts into the Premier League top four with a dominant performance.

Marmoush opened the scoring in the 19th minute, finishing off a long pass from Ederson to make it 1-0.

He doubled the lead with a powerful volley into the bottom corner five minutes later and then completed his hat trick in the 33rd minute to give Man City a 3-0 lead going into the first-half break.

Marmoush became the second Egyptian player to score a hat trick in the Premier League after Mohammed Salah.

It was also the fourth-quickest Premier League hat trick by a Man City player—Sergio Aguero netted the fastest with a nine-minute treble in 2015.

Marmoush was delighted to open his Premier League account with a hat trick, having gone three matches without a goal since joining from Stuttgart in the January transfer window.

He said, “Amazing day. The feeling is crazy, of course; it’s the first hat trick of my career so it’s a really, really nice feeling.

“From the beginning of the match we came, from the first minute, really focused on the job and we got the job done.

“It was all fast-paced, so I’m really happy to help the team. The most important thing is to get the three points and we did what we could always do.

“I also have to thank my teammates, my coach, the staff, everyone helped me from the first day in feeling a part of this family. They helped me show my qualities and helped me reach where I reached today.

“It’s just the beginning and we are looking forward to the next games. I’m really happy that I helped the team, but now the game is behind us, we look forward to our next game and start focusing on the next game.”

The 26-year-old received a standing ovation from the City fans at the Etihad when being replaced by Jeremy Doku.

He said, “Yeah, amazing [fans], it was an amazing atmosphere,” he declared.

“I’d like to thank the fans for the really nice applause and hopefully there will be many more.”

Pep Guardiola was impressed with his match-winning performance against Newcastle United.

He said, “[Omar] Marmoush did really well in Germany; a player with his quality and pace, I was pleased with the way he scored. Against Orient he missed chances, but today in the final third he was really good.

Marmoush was deservedly named the player of the match after the final whistle.

Man City fans will be hoping he can maintain the same form against Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday to help them overturn a first-leg 3-2 defeat.

The victory puts Guardiola‘s side back into fourth place in the Premier League table, just three points behind third-placed Nottingham Forest.

Up next for Manchester City in the Premier League is a clash against Liverpool next Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.

Cardi B Issues Strict Rules For Her Fans: ‘When I’m Single, You Single’

0

Cardi B had some fun with fans in a private Bardi Gang group this week, jokingly instructing them to mirror her relationship status at all times.

In a screenshot taken by one of the fans in the group, the Bronx superstar can be seen playfully issuing some orders to her adult fans as she noted there are “strict rules around this base.”

She added: “When I date you date, when I’m single you single, when I’m not getting dick, yall dont get dick, pussy or asshole… We gotta go through everything together. THANK YOU 18+”

Meanwhile, Cardi B and Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs sparked romance rumors after the pair were spotted looking quite flirty during a Super Bowl weekend club outing.

In video captured in New Orleans on Thursday night (February 6), the pair can be seen smiling and talking throughout the night and appearing to be more than friends.

Cardi was previously subjected to rumors that she cheated on Offset with Diggs after Akademiks made the claims on his Rumble channel back in October.

The superstar rapper seemingly responded while talking to fans on X Spaces days later, calling the internet “insane” and noting the rumors are “crazy” — but said she has no desire to combat them at this point.

“The internet is insane. All these rumors are so fucking crazy,” she said at the time. “That’s why I don’t wanna address it because I feel like shit is funny. I’ma just let it ride out because I think it’s cute, it’s funny. I’ma let people think what they wanna think.”

In his initial claims, Akademiks said: “This is what I heard… Cardi B was catching Offset doing all types of bullshit and basically, when Cardi B was like eight months pregnant, Offset went through her phone and caught her texting some dog-ass n-gga named Stefon Diggs, some football player.”

He then claimed that their relationship was not physical but their texts were flirtatious and there was even a picture sent.

“I heard she didn’t fuck him, but she was texting the n-gga, entertaining the n-gga,” he continued. “I heard there was a picture sent.”

He added: “That n-gga Offset sees the flirting. In a toxic n-gga mind, you fucked. So that’s why the n-gga is saying, ‘You done fucked Stefon Diggs.’”

Offset originally accused Cardi B of having sex with another man while she was pregnant with their youngest child, who was born in September.

The pair are currently in the process of divorcing.

Kanye West & Bianca Censori Are Not Divorcing, Says Couple’s Rep

0

Kanye West and Bianca Censori are not heading for divorce, according to a representative for the couple.

On Thursday (February 13), the Daily Mail reported that Ye and Censori had “broken up” and were planning to start the process of legally ending their marriage “in the coming days.”

Citing a source close to Kanye, the publication further claimed that the rapper had agreed to pay his wife, who he married two years ago, $5 million as part of a divorce agreement.

TMZ also reported on the news and added that both parties had already “reached out to divorce attorneys.”

However, the reports were quickly shut down by the couple’s longtime rep, Milo Yiannopoulos.

“Ye and Bianca are in Los Angeles, about to enjoy Valentine’s Day together. Announcements about their private life will come from them directly, not unsourced rumor in the tabloid press,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

“Is this the fifth or is it the sixth time the press has wrongly reported that Ye and Bianca are separating? I’ve lost track.”

Yiannopoulos, a controversial far-right figure who previously held a senior role at Kanye’s Yeezy company, also rubbished the rumors on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “Wrong again. Wanting something to be true is very dangerous.”

He also took aim at TMZ founder Harvey Levin: “Perhaps not surprising that Harvey’s TMZ is spreading bullshit about Ye’s marriage, given that Harvey is said to be workout buddies with Thomas Connelly, the Dr Death of Dentistry.”

Yiannopoulos previously accused Connelly, a celebrity dentist, of getting Kanye addicted to nitrous oxide.

This is not the first time that Ye and Bianca Censori have been the subject of divorce speculation. Last October, similar reports surfaced suggesting that the couple’s relationship was on the rocks.

Soon after, however, the pair were photographed in Tokyo looking very much in love and have made a number of public appearances together since.

Zanu PF Bigwigs Loot First Lady’s Donations Meant for Struggling Villagers

In a shocking and embarrassing development, high-ranking Zanu PF officials and top government employees have been accused of looting food hampers and agricultural inputs donated by First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa during a wellness campaign in Masvingo on Wednesday.

Zanu PF Bigwigs Loot First Lady’s Donations Meant for Struggling Villagers
Thousands of villagers, including schoolchildren, were bused to Masvingo Show Grounds for the campaign, where they received free disease screenings. Attendees were grouped into tens and made to share a single 50kg bag of rice, while top government and Zanu PF officials each walked away with a 10kg bag of mealie meal.

Zanu PF Masvingo vice chairperson, Trust Mugabe, who oversaw the distribution, defended the allocation process, insisting that the donations were distributed fairly.

Mugabe added that top party and Government officials received mealie meal because they are leaders.

Among those who reportedly benefited were senior Masvingo City Council managers, high-ranking Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) members, provincial heads of government ministries, and members of the Zanu PF provincial coordinating committee (PCC).

Driver Caught Taking Tick Grease
One of the more startling incidents involved Revesai Chikwanda, a driver in the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), who allegedly tried to walk away with six bottles of tick grease. Mugabe, upon noticing, publicly ordered Chikwanda to return the loot via the venue’s public address system.

Chikwanda allegedly claimed he had been sent by Masvingo Minister of State, Ezra Chadzamira, to collect the tick grease, a claim he later denied when contacted for comment. However, Mugabe confirmed that Chikwanda eventually returned the items after being confronted.

“He took the tick grease without permission and | ordered him to return it. He complied with the instruction,” said Mugabe.

Chadzamira could not be reached for comment as his phone went unanswered.

Police and CIO Vehicles Loaded with Donations
Witnesses reported that two open police trucks and a vehicle belonging to the CIO left the venue loaded with mealie meal and rice. Some police officers, who remained behind, also lined up for additional supplies.

Masvingo Permanent Secretary, Dr Addmore Pazvakavambwa, who was responsible for overseeing the distribution, insisted that everything had been done fairly. However, he admitted that he did not keep track of who received what.

A concerned villager confirmed that donations meant for struggling communities ended up in the hands of government officials and ruling party elites.

“The process was transparent when the First Lady was distributing the donations. Chaos began after she left and Mugabe and several youth took over. What they did is wrong. They are tarnishing the First Lady’s name because of their looting. I’m sure they will be handing out the donations to their lieutenants,” said a concerned villager.

It Ended in Tears: Harare Man Left Heartbroken After Girlfriend Reject His Valentine’s Suprise

What was meant to be a romantic gesture turned into a Valentine’s nightmare for one Harare man when his girlfriend publicly rejected his Valentine’s surprise.

His attempt to woo her on Valentine’s Day failed miserably.

Girlfriend Rejects Lovers Valentine’s Surprise
Seeing as it was Valentine’s Day, the man decided to go all out and surprise his girlfriend at a local restaurant. He arrived with a guitarist he had hired to serenade her and was carrying gifts.

In the video, the man is seen as he and the guitarist approach his girlfriend, who was seated in the restaurant with her friend. He then got down on one knee and presented her with the Valentine’s gift he had bought for her.

She stood up as if to back away, remaining silent as her boyfriend continued kneeling with the gift and rose, waiting for her to accept them.

Their grand entrance attracted a lot of attention, with spectators in the restaurant watching, taking videos, and even joining in to sing along with the guitarist.

Despite all the excitement, the woman still refused to accept the gift. Instead, she walked away and left him standing there with guitarist.

Michael B. Jordan reveals his longest relationship lasted just over a year

0

Michael B. Jordan isn’t too concerned about his relationship history. In a GQ interview published on February 12, the Creed star, 38, admitted that his love life is the topic he’s least eager to discuss.

He revealed that his longest relationship lasted just over a year but did not share further details.

“I’m not tripping over it,” he continued when prompted to speak about his romantic life. “I’m so work-focused. I would want somebody to fit into the flow of my life, of where I am. And that’s timing, right? You can meet the right person, and be at the wrong time, and it just doesn’t work out.”

Over the past decade, Jordan has been linked to Kendall Jenner, Kiki Layne, and Cindy Bruna. His most high-profile relationship was with Lori Harvey, whom he dated from 2020 to 2022. Their breakup was confirmed by a source to PEOPLE in June 2022.

“I think the person that’s going to be right for me lines up with the timing with who she is as a person, where I’m at in my life, how open I am to even … to that, you know?” Jordan added to GQ regarding his personal life.

At that time, a source close to Harvey, 28, told PEOPLE that she “wasn’t ready to commit” while focusing on her career and that she and Jordan “realized that they weren’t on the same page” while they “were making plans for their future.” At the same time, a source noted that Jordan “let down his guard with her, opening up emotionally in a romantic relationship for the first time.”

Jordan also addressed his 2022 breakup with Harvey while hosting Saturday Night Live in January 2023, joking about learning a new language and joining the celebrity dating app Raya.

In his GQ interview, he noted that his father had two children by 38. But he has decided to prioritize his career.

After making his directorial debut with Creed III in 2023, Jordan is now working on his second project, a remake of the 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair.

Jordan revealed to GQ that he plans to direct an original project next and eventually hopes to direct films without starring in them.

Meanwhile, his next film, Sinners, directed by longtime collaborator Ryan Coogler, is set to hit theaters on April 18.

Uganda military chief General Muhoozi threatens to attack eastern Congo town of Bunia

The chief of Uganda’s defence forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, said in a post on X on Saturday that he would attack the town of Bunia in neighbouring eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) unless “all forces” there surrendered their arms within 24 hours.

Kainerugaba, who has a history of posting provocative comments on foreign policy, said he had the authority of President Yoweri Museveni, who is also his father.

A spokesman for Uganda’s military said he could not comment on the matter.

Earlier on Saturday, Kainerugaba had said, without providing evidence, that people from the Bahima ethnic group were being killed.

“My people, the Bahima are being attacked. That’s a very dangerous situation for those attacking my people. No one on this earth can kill my people and think he will not suffer for it!” he said.

“Bunia will soon be in UPDF hands,” he said in a separate post, referring to the Uganda People’s Defence Force.

The threat from Uganda’s top military officer, who is widely believed to be the heir apparent to his father, stokes fears that a conflict between Congolese forces and Rwandan-backed M23 rebels could flare into a wider regional war.

Rebels enter Bukavu

On Friday, an M23 leader said the rebels had entered Bukavu, the second-largest city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, following the capture of Goma, the largest city, at the end of last month.

Citing UN sources, Reuters reported earlier in February that Uganda had deployed more than 1,000 extra soldiers in eastern Congo under the auspices of an operation to help Congo fight Islamist militants.

But UN experts say Uganda has also backed the ethnic Tutsi-led M23.

Kainerugaba has been publicly supportive of Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, who has denied accusations that Rwandan troops are fighting alongside M23.

In 2022, Kainerugaba referred to M23 as “brothers of ours” fighting for the rights of Tutsis in Congo.

Congo’s Communications Minister Patrick Muyaya and a spokesperson for the Congolese army did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Kainerugaba’s latest remarks.

Kainerugaba routinely makes inflammatory posts on social media, including a threat in 2022 to invade neighbouring Kenya.

UPND’s Distraction Tactics: Broadcasting a Witchcraft Case While the Nation Collapses- Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

UPND’s Distraction Tactics: Broadcasting a Witchcraft Case While the Nation Collapses

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

The judiciary, which has become an extension of the UPND government through Chief Justice Mumba Malila, has announced that the trial of two self-proclaimed witchdoctors, allegedly accused of wanting to “assassinate” President Hakainde Hichilema using charms, will be televised.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) government has once again proven that they believe Zambians are gullible and easy to deceive. They deliberately decided to have the gold scandal case held under camera—a case involving powerful figures within their inner circles—because it would expose their corruption and hypocrisy. Yet, they are eager to broadcast a staged witchcraft case, a fabricated drama designed to mislead the public and implicate innocent people. This is nothing but a desperate ploy to divert attention from their failures.

A Government Protecting Criminals While Distracting the Public

When the gold scandal surfaced, the Zambian people demanded transparency. They wanted to see accountability, investigations, and consequences for those involved. After all, this was a case of national economic sabotage, involving millions of dollars in illegal dealings. But instead of exposing the truth, the UPND government went silent. They protected the culprits—their own associates—while pretending to champion good governance.

Now, ask yourselves: If this government was truly committed to fighting corruption, why did they hide the gold scandal from public scrutiny? Why was it held under camera? Who are they shielding?

Yet, when it comes to a baseless witchcraft case, they have mobilized state resources, deployed media coverage, and turned it into a national spectacle. The hypocrisy is blatant and insulting. They are not fighting for justice—they are fighting to distract and deceive.

Zambia Is Sinking, and UPND Is Playing Games

While the UPND government plays these foolish political games, Zambia is crumbling. The economy is in freefall, the cost of living is unbearable, and unemployment is skyrocketing. People can no longer afford basic necessities—mealie meal prices are rising, fuel prices are increasing, and the kwacha is losing value daily.

Instead of addressing these urgent crises, the government is wasting valuable time and resources on a witch hunt. How does a fabricated witchcraft case help Zambians put food on the table? How does it fix the job crisis? How does it bring down the cost of living? It doesn’t.

The UPND thrives on excuses and distractions. When the economy collapses, they blame the previous government. When fuel prices rise, they blame external factors. When they fail to deliver their promises, they shift focus to useless propaganda. But we are not blind. We see through the lies.

Enough Is Enough—Zambians Will Not Be Fooled

Zambians did not vote for a government of excuses, deception, and incompetence. They voted for change, economic stability, job creation, and lower living costs. But instead, they have received nothing but broken promises, suffering, and a leadership that prioritizes cover-ups over solutions.

If the UPND truly stands for justice, let them televise the gold scandal. Let them show who was involved, who benefited, and who should be jailed. Until then, their so-called “fight against corruption” is a joke—a staged performance to fool the masses.

But Zambians are not fools. We refuse to be lied to, distracted, and manipulated. It is time for the government to stop playing games and start delivering real results to the people who put them in power.

What a disgraceful waste of time and resources!

THE COLLAPSE OF ZAMBIA UNDER PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S FAILED LEADERSHIP

0

THE COLLAPSE OF ZAMBIA UNDER PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S FAILED LEADERSHIP

Since assuming office, President Hakainde Hichilema has presided over the systematic collapse of our economy, worsening the livelihoods of ordinary Zambians.

Despite his credentials as an economist, his administration has failed to implement policies that alleviate the suffering of the people. Instead, it has plunged the majority of Zambians into deeper struggles with high living costs, unemployment, and a deteriorating public service sector.

The promises of economic revival, job creation, and a lower cost of living have turned into nothing but empty rhetoric. Small businesses are suffocating, the mining sector remains unstable, and essential commodities are now beyond the reach of many Zambians.

Instead of fostering national development, this government has chosen to enrich itself while ignoring the real concerns of the people.

The worsening load-shedding crisis is proof of their failure. Despite steady rainfall, blackouts have now reached 24-hour cycles, crippling businesses and households. If Kariba has not yet reached full capacity, we should at least be seeing some improvement, yet the situation has only deteriorated.

How are businesses like barber shops, welding workshops, and salons expected to survive under these conditions? With the high cost of fuel, who can afford to run a generator for 24 hours just to keep their businesses afloat?

With the energy sector in crisis, how do these dreamers expect to resurrect the economy? I often wonder, especially when President Hichilema tells people to work hard, yet the very catalysts for productivity electricity, affordable fuel, and a stable economy are missing.

Meanwhile, President Hichilema continues to trot the globe, signing MoUs, while leaving real solutions behind at home.

Zambia has what it takes to develop, but what is lacking is patriotic and visionary leadership, leaders who put the interests of the country above personal gain and manage our natural resources for the benefit of all Zambians, not their own pockets.

It is shameful for Finance Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane to claim that the economy is doing fine perhaps in his pocket, but certainly not for the millions of ordinary Zambians struggling daily. If his belly is full, let him at least have the decency not to mock the people who are suffering due to his government’s failures and selfishness.

Unfortunately, the so-called economist has failed. It is a sham.

Hon. Jack Mwiimbu’s Selective Outrage: Why Only Munyaule?- Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

Hon. Jack Mwiimbu’s Selective Outrage: Why Only Munyaule?

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

As I watched Parliament proceedings, I was stunned by Hon. Jack Mwiimbu’s relentless attack on the Munyaule page, accusing its administrator of spreading falsehoods and hate speech. He spoke with such urgency and passion, as though Munyaule were the biggest threat to Zambia’s democracy.

But as I listened, I couldn’t help but ask:

Why does Munyaule warrant so much attention, while State House operatives freely run Koswe and Watchdog—platforms that thrive on slander, propaganda, and dehumanization of citizens?

The Blatant Double Standards

It is no secret that Koswe and Watchdog have been weaponized by the ruling party to spread misinformation, character assassination, and outright lies. Yet, Mwiimbu has never uttered a word about them. These pages have:

✅ Vilified opposition leaders with baseless accusations and fabricated scandals.
✅ Targeted and harassed journalists for exposing government corruption.
✅ Smeared private citizens who dared to express independent views.
✅ Promoted hate and division by publishing outright falsehoods to manipulate public opinion.

Yet, where is Mwiimbu’s outrage when these pages go on a rampage against innocent citizens?

Has he ever stood in Parliament to condemn them?

Has he ever called for their shutdown?

Has he ever warned their administrators against hate speech?

No. He has remained silent.

What Makes Koswe and Watchdog So Special?

This raises a fundamental question: Why is Munyaule the only target?

Why are Koswe and Watchdog immune from scrutiny?

Is it because they are run by State House operatives?

Is it because their lies benefit the ruling party instead of challenging it?

Is it because their propaganda serves as a shield for government failures?

Munyaule, regardless of what one thinks of it, is not the first nor the only controversial platform in Zambia. Yet Mwiimbu wants it shut down, while Koswe and Watchdog continue their dirty work unchecked. That alone exposes his hypocrisy.

If hate speech and misinformation are truly a concern, then ALL platforms guilty of it must be condemned—not just those critical of the government.

Mwiimbu Must Start With Koswe and Watchdog or Keep Quiet

If Jack Mwiimbu genuinely cared about misinformation, hate speech, and online toxicity, then he should start by taking action against Koswe and Watchdog—because they have done far more damage to Zambia’s political discourse than Munyaule ever has.

Where was his outrage when Koswe was spreading lies about opposition leaders?

Where was his condemnation when private citizens were being defamed and insulted daily?

Where was his voice when journalists were being harassed simply for exposing the truth?

His silence on Koswe and Watchdog is proof that his attack on Munyaule is politically motivated. It is not about enforcing the law, not about protecting citizens, but about silencing criticism and protecting those in power.

Selective Outrage is a Sign of Weak Leadership

A true leader does not apply the law selectively. A true leader does not only speak out when it benefits their political interests.

If Mwiimbu had any integrity, he would demand accountability across the board. But his actions prove that he is not interested in justice—he is interested in suppressing dissent.

Until he condemns ALL guilty platforms—including Koswe and Watchdog—he has no moral ground to speak on this issue.

Either he addresses all propaganda pages equally, or he must keep quiet.

KASAKA HEADS BACK TO HIS HOME TOWN OF NDOLA AFTER BEING DISCHARGED FROM MAINA SOKO MEDICAL CENTRE

KASAKA HEADS BACK TO HIS HOME TOWN OF NDOLA AFTER BEING DISCHARGED FROM MAINA SOKO MEDICAL CENTRE

PS Thabo Kawana writes:

This morning, we saw off popular Copperbelt Comedian and MC, Webster Chiluba, popularly known as Kasaka back to Ndola following his discharge from Maina Soko Medical Centre where he had been evacuated by government through the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts for medical attention.

Mr. Chiluba’s treatment is ongoing as he has been unwell for the last 9 years and he is scheduled to come back to the health facility after 2 weeks for further medical attention.

Government through the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts has facilitated for Mr. Chiluba’s return to his home town, Ndola on the Copperbelt by providing a vehicle.

What is important to state is that government will help its citizens regardless of who and what they are.

Particularly in the arts industry, President Hakainde Hichilema has been very emphatic that artists are professionals like any other professional.

It is not right for us to apportion artists to political parties out of the works that they do in their professional lives. Artists can be used by any organization to propagate their message.

The UPND New Dawn Government under the able leadership of Mr. President, Hakainde Hichilema has placed premium on citizens.

We appeal to citizens to desist from misinforming the general public on the health status and well-being of others. Government is stiffening the laws and all culprits will be brought to book.

We wish Mr. Chiluba good health and well-being always.

FAZ Extends Support to ZISD and Under-20 Star Lydia Shamalime

FAZ Extends Support to ZISD and Under-20 Star Lydia Shamalime

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has taken a significant step in supporting the welfare of young players by visiting the home of rising star Lydia Shamalime, a member of the Under-20 national team and Zambia Institute of Sustainable Development (ZISD).

Shamalime’s plight was brought to light by journalist Idah Musakanya, who shared the 17-year-old’s struggles with the public. The FAZ General Secretary, Reuben Kamanga, responded quickly to assist the young player, who resides in Chainda Township.

Kamanga’s visit to Shamalime’s family included a donation of assorted groceries and financial support aimed at alleviating their rental challenges. In a statement, Kamanga explained, “We have managed to visit the home of Lydia who is a ZISD player and was part of the under-20 squad at the Cosafa last year. In the short term, we have assisted the family with some foodstuffs and some money to help with their rentals.”

While acknowledging the efforts of the national team, Kamanga emphasized the role of clubs in looking after their players. “As people may already know, these players primarily belong to clubs and only come to the national team when there are games. We would only encourage our clubs to take care of their players as their employers,” he said.

The FAZ General Secretary also pointed out the existing limitations on player remuneration for minors as outlined by FIFA, which standardizes payments for junior players. “There are rules around remuneration for minors by FIFA, which standard is applied for players in junior setups,” Kamanga added.

In light of the recurring issues faced by young players like Shamalime, Kamanga stated that FAZ would work closely with its membership and organizations such as the Footballers and Allied Workers Union of Zambia to develop long-term solutions to improve players’ welfare.

“We are committed to engaging with our clubs and player representatives to find sustainable ways of addressing these challenges,” Kamanga said. “This is just the beginning of what we hope will lead to more comprehensive support for young players throughout the country.”

The intervention from FAZ highlights the growing concern around the wellbeing of young athletes in Zambia, particularly those in junior football. With Shamalime’s situation bringing attention to the issue, it is hoped that further initiatives will be put in place to support the development of young talents, ensuring their needs are met both on and off the pitch.

Car Thieves Meet Their Maker After Action-Packed Police Chase

Car Thieves Meet Their Maker After Action-Packed Police Chase

In what can only be described as a real-life action movie (minus the slow-motion stunts and Hollywood budget), four notorious car thieves met their end after a dramatic showdown with police in Lusaka.

According to the Zambia Police, these streetwise criminals who clearly thought they were starring in Fast & Furious: Lusaka Drift had been wreaking havoc across the city, stealing from parked vehicles like it was a full-time job. But on Monday at exactly 14:30 hours, their luck finally ran out.

The suspects, cruising around in a white Toyota Allion (BAJ 6584), decided to hit Crossroads Mall in Woodlands, snatching valuables from an unsuspecting victim’s car. Thinking they were slick, they sped off towards Kabulonga.

Unfortunately for them, an eagle-eyed informant had already dialed the police faster than they could say “twaya” (we move). Officers from the Anti-Robbery Squad and Scorpion Unit wasted no time in tracking the car down, cornering them near Millennium Village.

Now, instead of surrendering like normal people with common sense, these guys decided to make a run for it. Big mistake.

Police officers fired warning shots, but the driver must have thought he was Vin Diesel because he kept going until they punctured his tyres. One of the suspects caught a stray bullet (just a “small correction,” as Zambian uncles would say) before all four were finally subdued.

Little did they know, their troubles were just beginning.
Under intense questioning (read: no-nonsense police interrogation), the suspects spilled the beans, confessing to a series of car break-ins and robberies. Thinking they had a chance at a plea deal, they even led police to their hidden stash in Kasupe, where they had a firearm and other stolen items.

But then, as if they had been watching too many action movies, they decided to pull off a final stunt attacking the armed officers!

Now, let’s pause for a moment. Imagine you are a criminal, handcuffed, unarmed, and surrounded by highly trained police officers with loaded guns. What do you do?
A) Stay calm and accept your fate.
B) Run for your life.
C) Attempt to grab a police officer’s rifle.

These guys, in the biggest miscalculation of their criminal careers, chose option C and it went downhill from there.

One suspect, clearly not a student of physics, lunged for an officer’s gun, not knowing that the magazine had been removed. He managed to fire one round before realizing that he’d made a terrible mistake. Within seconds, the police “balanced the equation,” neutralizing all four suspects on the spot.

A quick search of their getaway car revealed a treasure trove of stolen items, including:

1. Four mobile phones (Infinix, Itel, iPhone, Samsung)
2. A Lenovo laptop (later identified by a victim, Mr. Paul Kalobwe, 53, of Nyumba Yanga)
3. A camera pen
4. Burglary tools (screwdrivers, T-bars, and a device suspected to jam car locks)
5. Fake registration plates

But the real bombshell came when investigations linked these guys to a brutal robbery that resulted in the tragic death of a Chinese national, Mr. Lee Long, in October 2024.

On that fateful day, Mr. Long had been ambushed while trying to buy vehicle spare parts in Makeni. The same gang had dragged him into an unregistered Toyota Mark 2 and, after a struggle, threw him out of the moving car, leading to fatal injuries.

After the shootout, the bodies of the four suspects were taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary for identification, postmortem, and burial.

And just like that, another criminal chapter was closed.

ACCUSER DROPS RAPE LAWSUIT AGAINST JAY-Z AND SEAN COMBS

ACCUSER DROPS RAPE LAWSUIT AGAINST JAY-Z AND SEAN COMBS

A lawsuit against Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jay-Z, which alleged the rape of a 13-year-old girl in 2000, has been dismissed, according to a legal filing submitted on Friday in New York.

The attorney representing the anonymous plaintiff, referred to as Jane Doe, voluntarily withdrew the case, court records show.

The filing was submitted by lawyer Tony Buzbee, who is representing dozens of plaintiffs in lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct against Mr Combs.

The filings states that the plaintiff “hereby gives notice that the… action is voluntarily dismissed, with prejudice”.

Because the dismissal is with prejudice, the lawsuit cannot again be refiled in its current form.

Roc Nation, the entertainment company founded by Jay-Z, whose legal name is Shawn Carter, issued a statement signed by him, referring to the dismissal as a “victory”.

“The frivolous, fictitious and appalling allegations have been dismissed,” he wrote.

“This civil suit was without merit and never going anywhere. The fictional tale they created was laughable, if not for the seriousness of the claims.”

“The trauma that my wife, my children, loved ones and I have endured can never be dismissed,” said the rapper, who is married to singer Beyoncé.

He continued: “The courts must protect the innocent from being accused without a shred of evidence. May the truth prevail for all victims and those falsely accused equally.”

Jay-Z’s attorney, Alex Spiro, emphasised in a separate statement that the case “never should have been brought”.

“By standing up in the face of heinous and false allegations, Jay has done what few can – he pushed back, he never settled, he never paid 1 red penny, he triumphed and cleared his name,” he said in a statement to the BBC.

Jane Doe initially filed the lawsuit against Mr Combs in October before adding Jay-Z’s name in December. She alleged that both men assaulted her in 2000 after an MTV Video Music Awards afterparty.

Jay-Z strongly denied the allegations, claiming that his attorney had been sent “blackmail” in an attempt to force a settlement. He said the attempt had the “opposite effect” and instead motivated him to publicly challenge the accusations.

In December, Jane Doe gave an interview that raised questions about her credibility. She admitted that “not all the facts are clear” and stated, “I have made some mistakes. I may have made a mistake in identifying.”

Last month, Jay-Z formally requested the court to dismiss the lawsuit, citing inconsistencies in the accuser’s account. The request was approved by United States District Judge Analisa Torres, leading to the lawsuit’s dismissal.

While Jay-Z is no longer facing legal action in this case, Mr Combs continues to battle over three dozen civil suits.

In response to Friday’s dismissal, Mr Combs’ legal team issued a statement declaring his innocence.

“For months, we have seen case after case filed by individuals hiding behind anonymity, pushed forward by an attorney more focused on media headlines than legal merit. Just like this claim, the others will fall apart because there is no truth to them,” the statement says.

It added: “This is just the first of many that will not hold up in a court of law.”

Mr Combs has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, since September 2024 on federal criminal charges related to racketeering and sex trafficking.

He’s been denied bail three times, and will remain in custody until his trial on 5 May 2025. [BBC News]

Nigeria angered after military chief denied Canada entry

The Nigerian government has condemned Canada for denying visas to its senior military officers, including the head of the military.

Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa said half of his delegation, who were supposed to be in Canada for an official assignment on Wednesday, were left in Nigeria after not getting the correct paperwork.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo condemned the action by Canadian officials, terming it “disrespectful” to the West African country.

The Canadian High Commission in Nigeria said it was aware of the matter but declined to give further details for “privacy reasons” on the specific individuals involved.

It comes two weeks after Canada introduced new regulations that grant immigration officers explicit authority to cancel temporary resident documents under specific circumstances.

The changes were aimed at bolstering border security, maintaining the integrity of visa programmes and protecting public safety, according to the Canadian authorities.

Speaking on Thursday, Gen. Musa said how he and his colleagues were blocked from attending an event in Canada meant to honor war veterans.

“We were invited along with our team, but while half of us got visas, the other half was denied. It’s very disappointing,” he added.

He termed the incident a “wake-up call” for Nigeria to strengthen its sovereignty and “refuse to be taken for granted.”

Nuhu Ribadu, a national security adviser, who spoke at the same event on Thursday, expressed disappointment at the move, calling it “disrespectful” saying Canada “can go to hell.”

“This is yet another reason we must work hard to make Nigeria work,” Mr Ribadu added.

During an interview on Nigerian TV on Friday, Tunji-Ojo said Canada’s action was unjustifiable, noting that diplomatic channels could have been used to address any concerns.

“If that can happen to the chief of defence staff, then I am worried for an average Nigerian,” the interior minister said.

He was, however, hopeful that the matter would be resolved diplomatically to ensure mutual respect between both nations.

DR Congo singer killed filming video in conflict city

A popular musician in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been killed while filming a music video in the conflict-hit eastern town of Goma.

The body of Delphin Katembo Vinywasiki, better known as Delcat Idengo, was found in a street on Thursday with his head partially covered with blood. Unconfirmed reports say the artist was shot.

Idengo, famous for his songs critical of both the government and the rebels, was among hundreds of inmates who escaped from a prison in Goma, after M23 militants seized the city last month.

The east of DR Congo has been engulfed in fighting as armed groups and the army battle it out for control of the mineral-rich region.

It is not clear who was behind the killing.

The musician had just released a track called Bunduki (meaning “weapon” in Swahili), condemning the rebel occupation in Goma.

“Justice will be done,” government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya posted on X platform, terming the musician’s killing an “abominable act”. He blamed the M23.

But the M23 pointed the finger at government-aligned forces, calling on them to hand over their weapons.

The killing comes amid growing tension in the area after the Rwanda-backed M23 captured Goma, in a major escalation of the fighting in late January.

Around 2,900 people have been killed and about 700,000 others forced from their homes in the recent hostilities, the latest UN figures suggest.

The rebels are now pushing towards Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu – another key city in the region – despite regional peace efforts to end the conflict.

Idengo’s death has sparked fresh fears in North Kivu as protesters took to the streets of Beni, where he was born, to demand justice.

Videos shared on social media showed the musician’s body lying on the ground after the incident in the Kilijiwe area, in the north of Goma.

According to the witnesses, Idengo, who was wearing military trousers for the video, died on the spot after the attack.

The Congolese ministry of arts and culture described the incident as an “assassination”.

“A committed voice, he carried, through his music, the aspirations and hopes of an entire generation,” the ministry posted on X.

Idengo was awaiting trail after his jailing last year for inciting people to take up arms and force UN peacekeepers to leave the country.

In 2021, he was prosecuted for insulting President Félix Tshisekedi and spreading “false rumours” in one of his songs where he accused the president of not fulfilling his promises. He was sentenced to 10 years, but was later acquitted.

“The nation has lost a patriot committed to national cohesion. I mourn the loss of Idengo. It is high time for this war to end. Humanity above all!” Martin Fayulu, an opposition leader who came third in the 2023 general election, posted on X.

Moïse Katumbi, another opposition figure who came second in the election, condemned Idengo’s killing.

“His murderers, whoever they are, must be quickly identified and very severely condemned,” Katumbi posted on X.

Scores of children raped by armed men in eastern DRC, UNICEF says

0

Scores of children caught up in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have been subjected to sexual violence including rape by armed men, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund.

The targeting of children has soared to unprecedented levels in recent weeks, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell warned on Thursday, making an urgent appeal for the violence to stop as Rwanda-backed M23 rebels expand their footprint, clashing with Congolese forces and their allied militias.

“In North and South Kivu provinces, we are receiving horrific reports of grave violations against children by parties to the conflict, including rape and other forms of sexual violence at levels surpassing anything we have seen in recent years,” Russell said in a statement.

Sharing the stories of some survivors, she said: “One mother recounted to our staff how her six daughters, the youngest just 12 years old, were systematically raped by armed men while searching for food.”

UNICEF’s accusation came as the conflict in the mineral-rich region shows no signs of abating, as M23, which captured North Kivu’s capital Goma last month, pushes further south. Thousands have been killed and tens of thousands more displaced, the UN has said

The agency’s partners in the region reported that the number of rape cases treated across 42 health facilities jumped five-fold in one week from January 27 to February 2, Russell said.

“Of those treated, 30 percent were children. The true figures are likely much higher because so many survivors are reluctant to come forward.”

Russell added that she was “deeply alarmed by the intensifying violence”, particularly the effects on children and families.

Lianne Gutcher, UNICEF’s communication chief in DRC, told The Associated Press news agency that of the total 572 rape cases reported, 170 were children.

“It is suspected that all parties to the conflict committed sexual violence,” Gutcher said.

Partner agencies are now running out of the drugs used to reduce the risk of HIV infection after the sexual assaults, Russell said.

As fighting intensifies, hundreds of children have been separated from their fleeing families, exposing them to heightened risks of violence, she added.

In just the past two weeks, more than 1,100 unaccompanied children have been identified in the two Kivu provinces, according to UNICEF.

As the rebel offensive widens, recruitment of youth by all groups is likely to accelerate, with reports of children as young as 12 being enlisted or coerced to join the fighting.

“Parties to the conflict must immediately cease and prevent grave rights violations against children,” Russell said.

M23, which UN experts say is backed by Rwanda, in recent months has swiftly seized tracts of territory in eastern DRC after again taking up arms in late 2022, in a country plagued by numerous conflicts for decades.

M23 claims to be fighting for the interests of ethnic Tutsis and has continued its military campaign in DRC despite calls from regional leaders to end the fighting.

M23 rebels in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo have entered Bukavu, the eastern region’s second-largest city.

CONGO REBELS SAY THEY HAVE ENTERED BUKAVU AFTER SEIZING AIRPORT

By Reuters

February 15, 2025

SUMMARY:

M23 seized Kavumu airport as they headed south

Residents in northern Bukavu say rebels entered without fight

President warns of wider war risk at Munich Security Conference

Feb 14 (Reuters) – Rwandan-backed M23 rebels entered eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s second-largest city Bukavu on Friday, a rebel leader told Reuters, as residents reported seeing the militants in the streets of a northern district.

Earlier on Friday, the Congolese army confirmed that M23 fighters had taken control of Kavumu airport, north of Bukavu, and that Congolese troops had pulled back with their equipment.

The rebels have been trying to push south towards Bukavu since they seized Goma, the largest city in eastern Congo, at the end of last month.

The capture of Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province, would represent an unprecedented expansion of territory under the M23’s control since the latest insurgency started in 2022, and deal a further blow to Kinshasa’s authority in the east.

“I confirm that we entered Bukavu this evening, and tomorrow, we will continue with the operation to clean up the city,” said Corneille Nangaa, leader of the Congo River Alliance, which includes the M23.

The Congolese army did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Two residents of a northern part of Bukavu called Bagira said they had seen rebels on the streets and no sign of fighting.

“Their uniforms were different. We had been prepared since the daytime for their arrival … the FARDC (army soldiers) had left. There were no clashes,” said resident Helene, who described watching the rebels pass by her window.

Earlier, Congolese army spokesperson Sylvain Ekenge said troops had pulled back after the seizure of the airport.

He did not say where they had withdrawn to, but Congolese and Burundian troops were seen leaving Bukavu’s main military camp, Saio, during the day, two residents and one U.N. source said.

“They’re retreating to avoid fighting in populated areas,” said one person, who lives near the camp.

A Congolese officer at the camp, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that some, but not all troops had left the camp.

Any escalation in Bukavu could worsen the humanitarian situation, with the U.N. saying on Thursday that there had been an influx of displaced people moving towards the city, where nearly 1.3 million people already reside.

Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi meanwhile was seeking international support to help end the crisis, warning the Munich Security Conference of the risk of a wider war.

“Of course this could lead to a spill over in the region,” he said, reiterating his call for Rwanda to be held accountable for its role in the conflict. “It is up to the international community to prevent this conflict spreading.”

Rwanda rejects accusations from Congo, the United Nations, and Western powers that thousands of its troops are fighting alongside M23. It says it is defending itself against the threat from a Hutu-led militia, which it says is fighting alongside the Congolese military.

The crisis will be high on the agenda at the annual two-day African Union summit in Addis Ababa this weekend. Tshisekedi will not attend, sending his prime minister to represent Congo, the presidency said on Friday.

Tshisekedi is under intense pressure at home. As the fighting rages in the east, a heavier military presence has also deployed over the past week throughout the capital Kinshasa, some 1,600 km (1,000 miles) west of Goma, a Reuters reporter said.

In Munich, Tshisekedi accused former president Joseph Kabila of siding with the rebels and Rwanda in a bid to destabilise the country.

“The real sponsors (of the conflict) are hiding. And the real sponsor of this opposition is my predecessor, Joseph Kabila.”

Barbara Nzimbi, Kabila’s communications adviser, said: “I completely deny these accusations. But that’s Mr. Tshisekedi’s policy, to find a scapegoat rather than provide a solution.”
