34 CDF LOAN DEFAULTERS SUED IN LUMEZI, K420,000 RECOVERED.

34 CDF LOAN DEFAULTERS SUED IN LUMEZI, K420,000 RECOVERED.

Lumezi Town Council has recovered over K420,000 from beneficiaries who defaulted on Constituency Development Fund (CDF) empowerment loans after taking legal action against them in the Chipata Subordinate Court.

According to a statement issued by Lumezi Town Council Assistant Public Relations Officer, Irvin Muyumbwa, the Local Authority sued 34 CDF loan defaulters last month in an effort to recover K1.46 million in unpaid arrears

The move, Muyumbwa said, was aimed at safeguarding government’s empowerment initiative designed to support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with affordable credit.

Following the court action, 18 loan beneficiaries have made payments totaling K420,822.07 within the past 22 days. This comes after the court gave them a 15-day ultimatum to pay at least 75% of their arrears to avoid further legal processes.

Meanwhile, Resident Magistrate Destiny Kalusopa has entered consent judgment against four CDF loan defaulters, who agreed to pay back K212,480.30 within two weeks. Magistrate Kalusopa warned that failure to comply would result in a Writ of Fieri Facias (FiFa), allowing bailiffs to seize property to recover the debt.

In a separate ruling, Senior Resident Magistrate Felix Kaoma entered a default judgment on 5th September 2025 against another four defendants who failed to respond to the council’s claims within the stipulated timeframe. The court ordered them to pay K213,719.28 within three days of receiving the judgment.

Additionally, ten other CDF loan defaulters are expected to appear in court next week as their cases continue before Magistrates Betty Mwiinga, Chikumbi Ngulube, and Lydia Lwenje.

The Local Authority has commended loan beneficiaries who have started clearing their arrears and urged others to honour their repayment obligations.

VICE PRESIDENT CONFIRMS TWO HEALTH CASES REPORTED AFTER SINO METALS POLLUTION

VICE PRESIDENT CONFIRMS TWO HEALTH CASES REPORTED AFTER SINO METALS POLLUTION

By Michael Kaluba

Vice President Mutale Nalumango has disclosed that only two health incidents have been recorded so far following the Sino metals pollution of the Kafue River, with no fatalities reported.

Speaking during a tour of the plant, Mrs. Nalumango says the cases involved two residents of Ngabwe district, one who consumed contaminated fish and another who drank water from the river and that both were treated and later discharged.

She says government has been compiling reports from various primary health care facilities over the past seven months, and so far, there are no indications of unusual health complications linked to the pollution.

The vice president has reaffirmed that water in Kitwe and surrounding areas remains safe for consumption, according to standards set by the Zambia Bureau of Standards-ZABS- and the World Health Organization-WHO.

She has further urged stakeholders to take interest in conducting independent and random water tests to validate expert findings.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Nalumango says government is ready to assist Sino metals in facilitating the resettlement of Kalusale residents who live within the company’s concession area, emphasizing that this responsibility lies squarely with the mine, as provided for by law.

MUKANDILA TO MOBILIZE YOUTHS TO VOTE OUT MPS WHO WILL REJECT HH IMPEACHMENT MOTION

MUKANDILA TO MOBILIZE YOUTHS TO VOTE OUT MPS WHO WILL REJECT HH IMPEACHMENT MOTION.

By: Thomas Afroman Mwale

Tonse Alliance Youth Chairperson Celestine Mukandila has vowed to mobilize youths across the country to vote out Members of Parliament (MPs) who will not support his proposed impeachment of President Hakainde Hichilema over alleged constitutional violations.

Speaking during a media briefing, Mr. Mukandila announced that a notice of motion has already been prepared for MPs to sign and present before Parliament, expressing confidence that the initiative will yield positive results.

He explained that the move is backed by comprehensive research and follows a recent Constitutional Court judgment that ruled in his favor while leading to the incarceration of former Lumezi Parliamentarian Munir Zulu.

The PF lawyer further disclosed that it is his expectation that Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti to lead the process once the motion is delivered to her, adding that such a step would inspire confidence similar to that of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Mr. Mukandila also revealed that the impeachment motion has the support of legal experts who are working alongside him on the matter.

HH IMPEACHMENT CALLS ‘EXERCISE IN FUTILITY’

HH IMPEACHMENT CALLS ‘EXERCISE IN FUTILITY’

ZAMBIA Civil Liberties Union (ZCLU) says it is an ‘exercise in futility’ to call for the impeachment of President Hakainde Hichilema on the ground that he breached the Constitution regarding Bill Seven.

The union has also noted the need to conduct delimitation of vast constituencies and implement the mixed-member proportional representation electoral system via Bill Seven.

Lusaka lawyer Celestine Mukandila, who is Tonse Alliance youth chairman, called for the impeachment of President Hichilema, accusing him of breaching the Constitution regarding Bill Seven.

ZCLU executive director Isaac Mwanza said those who are claiming Mr Hichilema breached the supreme document of the land on Bill Seven are misleading the public, especially that there was no mention of such in the Constitutional Court’s recent guidance.

He said the Executive is constitutionally mandated to initiate bills into National Assembly of Zambia.

Mr Mwanza said President Hichilema, during his meeting with civil society organisations at State House, was magnanimous to listen to concerns by stakeholders on the proposed legislation, which led him to call for a deferment of the Bill.

Zambia’s Tax Paradox: Burdening Citizens While Paving the Way for Mining Giants?

Zambia’s Tax Paradox: Burdening Citizens While Paving the Way for Mining Giants?

The recent announcement by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) regarding the 2025 Supplementary Budget Tax Changes has sparked considerable debate. While the government asserts these measures are necessary for economic growth, a closer look at the changes, particularly in contrast to the treatment of multinational mining companies, raises questions about equity and national interest.

The increased Withholding Tax from 15% to 20% on interest earned from Treasury Bills and Government Bonds directly impacts both residents and non-residents. This move, while potentially boosting government revenue, could disincentivize local investment and savings, ultimately affecting the financial well-being of ordinary Zambians. Similarly, the introduction of a 10% Excise Duty on betting services, though aimed at a specific sector, adds to the overall tax burden on citizens’ discretionary spending.

Perhaps most concerning for many is the implementation of the Minimum Alternative Tax (MAT) for firms and partnerships. While the ZRA states this applies to those “not declaring losses or near zero profits,” the definition and application of “near zero profits” remain ambiguous. This could disproportionately affect small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are still recovering from economic headwinds and reinvesting their earnings. The provision for a tax credit against income tax, while seemingly beneficial, still necessitates an upfront payment, which can strain liquidity for businesses.

In stark contrast to these measures, the Zambian government has, in recent years, granted significant tax concessions to multinational mining companies. For example, the suspension of import duty on copper concentrates, while intended to stimulate local processing, effectively reduces the cost of operations for large-scale miners. Furthermore, the deductibility of mineral royalty for income tax purposes significantly lowers the effective tax rate for these entities. This often means that despite extracting vast mineral wealth, their net contribution to the national fiscus, when compared to their profits, is perceived by many as inadequate.

This differential treatment creates an uneven playing field. While Zambian citizens and local businesses are asked to bear an increased tax load, some of the most profitable entities operating within the country seem to enjoy a more lenient tax regime. This disparity fuels the narrative that the government prioritizes foreign investment over the economic empowerment of its own people.

To objectively address these concerns, there is a pressing need for greater transparency from the ZRA and the Ministry of Finance. Detailed reports outlining the actual revenue generated from these new tax measures on citizens and local businesses, alongside comprehensive data on the tax contributions (and concessions) of multinational mining companies, are crucial. Such data would allow for an informed public discourse and provide evidence to support or refute claims of inequitable taxation.

It is undeniable that Zambia requires revenue for its development agenda. However, the approach to taxation must be perceived as fair and equitable. While attracting foreign investment is vital, it should not come at the expense of burdening citizens and local enterprises. A balanced approach would involve:

Re-evaluating Mining Tax Regimes: A thorough review of existing tax concessions for mining companies, with an aim to ensure a fair return for the nation’s resources, is essential. This could involve exploring options such as higher royalty rates, windfall taxes during periods of high commodity prices, and stricter enforcement of transfer pricing rules.

Supporting Local Businesses: Instead of increasing their tax burden, policies that genuinely stimulate the growth of SMEs through targeted tax incentives, access to affordable credit, and simplified tax compliance procedures should be prioritized.

Public Consultation and Education: Before implementing significant tax changes, extensive public consultation and clear communication on the rationale and projected impact are vital to build trust and foster understanding.

Ultimately, the goal of tax reform should be to create a system that is not only revenue-generating but also just, promotes local economic growth, and instills confidence among all stakeholders. Without a careful recalibration, the current trajectory risks exacerbating inequalities and undermining the very economic progress it seeks to achieve.

Propaganda Won’t Divide Us, Simuuwe Stood for Zambia, Not Against Diplomacy

Propaganda Won’t Divide Us, Simuuwe Stood for Zambia, Not Against Diplomacy

By Tobbius Chilembo Hamunkoyo

The recent story alleging that “senior UPND officials are calling for the removal of Mark Simuuwe” is nothing but calculated propaganda designed by opposition elements to mislead the public and create divisions in the ruling party. No such demand has come from within the UPND leadership said a UPND senior Member.

The truth is simple, Mr. Simuuwe spoke out against undiplomatic conduct, stood up for Zambia’s sovereignty, and did not violate any law. Those who twist this into a scandal are the ones undermining the nation.

Let us remind ourselves what prompted this entire debate. U.S. Ambassador Michael Gonzales announced, in May 2025, that the U.S. would cut US$50 million in health aid due to alleged “systemic theft” of medical supplies in Zambia. He made these remarks publicly, and not through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the proper channel under diplomatic protocol.

While the theft of drugs is a serious issue that must be addressed, diplomacy requires that such concerns be raised respectfully, not in a way that embarrasses a sovereign nation. Mr. Simuuwe rightly responded, calling such remarks undiplomatic and a violation of Zambia’s dignity and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961.

The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961), which governs ambassadors everywhere, is crystal clear. Article 41(1) states: “They also have a duty not to interfere in the internal affairs of that State.” Article 41(2) further directs that “All official business with the receiving State… shall be conducted with or through the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.” By those standards, it was not Mr. Simuuwe who broke the rules, but the Ambassador who stepped outside proper diplomatic practice. The UPND Media Director was therefore correct to remind him of these principles.

The opposition is exploiting the issue to create confusion in the UPND and undermine President Hichilema, but Zambians can see through the propaganda. Simuuwe’s stance was not shameful, he was defending Zambia’s sovereignty, not attacking its partners.

The UPND values its partnership with the U.S. and other allies, but partnership must be based on mutual respect, not subordination. Simuuwe’s defense of Zambia shows patriotism, while the opposition’s propaganda only reveals their desperation.

Debt Burden Drives Malole Teacher to Su!c!de

Debt Burden Drives Malole Teacher to Su!c!de

The community of Malole in Mungwi District has been left in shock following the tragic death of a young teacher who allegedly took her own life after being overwhelmed by debt.

Memory Musonda, a 28-year-old teacher at St John’s Secondary School, is said to have consumed rat poison mixed with an overdose of salbutamol tablets on Tuesday morning. Despite efforts by her husband, neighbours, and colleagues to rush her to Malole Health Facility, she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Lucky Munkondya, confirmed the incident, disclosing that the tragedy unfolded on 9th September around 08:00 hours in Mutamba village, Malole area.

According to police, Ms. Musonda had been battling financial stress for months, having accumulated debts from various lending institutions and informal moneylenders, commonly known as shylocks. Investigations suggest that part of her borrowed money had been lost in betting activities, worsening her already fragile financial situation.

Her husband, Joseph Chilufya, told police that on the fateful morning, while he was working at the family’s farm, he received a distressing text message from his wife urging him to return home immediately. By the time he rushed back, he found her vomiting after ingesting the poisonous substances.

“She had complained recently that one of the lending institutions had deducted a huge chunk of her salary, leaving her with only K640 net pay. It weighed heavily on her,” Ms. Munkondya said.

The young teacher’s untimely death has stirred conversations in the community about the growing debt crisis among civil servants, the impact of gambling, and the silent battles many are fighting behind closed doors.

“She was a hardworking teacher and loved by her pupils. None of us expected that she was carrying such a heavy burden,” said one of her colleagues, who helped rush her to the hospital.

A Brought-in-Dead (BID) form was issued, and her body has since been taken to Kasama General Hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem.

As Malole mourns, Ms. Musonda’s story echoes the urgent need for financial literacy, debt management support, and mental health awareness to help prevent similar tragedies.

THE ROLE OF AN MP IN MATERO IS MORE THAN JUST MAKING LAWS

THE ROLE OF AN MP IN MATERO IS MORE THAN JUST MAKING LAWS

By Alexander Mumba Sakala

Many people assume that the role of a Member of Parliament is limited to sitting in the House, debating policies, and passing laws. While lawmaking is an important duty, it is only part of the responsibility. For the people of Matero, the role of an MP must extend beyond Parliament to address the real issues affecting their daily lives.

Matero faces pressing challenges that require immediate attention and strong representation. Job creation remains a top priority, as many residents seek opportunities to sustain themselves and their families. Access to clean and reliable water is another fundamental need that must be addressed to improve health and quality of life.

Infrastructure development is equally critical. Residents demand better roads, a strong and well-maintained road network, and effective drainage systems to prevent flooding, which has become a recurring problem in several areas. These are not just conveniences—they are essential to creating a safe and thriving community.

As a representative of Matero, my focus will not only be on participating in parliamentary debates but also on fighting for resources, promoting accountability, and ensuring development projects reach the people who need them most. True leadership is not about making noise in Parliament; it is about delivering tangible results that improve lives in the community.

By prioritizing the needs of Matero residents, we can build a constituency where opportunity, safety, and development are accessible to all. Leadership is best measured by service, commitment, and action—not by words alone.

LEADERSHIP MUST BE PROVEN BY EXAMPLE – ALEXANDER MUMBA SAKALA

LEADERSHIP MUST BE PROVEN BY EXAMPLE – ALEXANDER MUMBA SAKALA

By Wagon Media | September 9, 2025

Matero, Lusaka – Businessman, philanthropist, and United Party For National Development (UPND)Matero parliamentary aspiring candidate, Alexander Mumba Sakala, popularly known as Royal Park, has urged fellow contenders for public office to reflect on their personal records of service and achievements before seeking to represent the people.

Sakala, who has built a strong entrepreneurial profile through Royal Park and several other business ventures, as well as community initiatives under the Alexander Mumba Foundation, emphasized that leadership must be proven by action rather than promises.

“All of us who are aspiring to be Members of Parliament, especially here in Matero, must first ask ourselves some hard questions,” Sakala said.

He challenged aspiring leaders to reflect on four key questions:

1️⃣ What have we achieved as individuals before seeking public office?
2️⃣ What have we done for our families with the positions and resources God has already entrusted to us?
3️⃣ What have we done for our communities on our own?
4️⃣ How many people have we ever employed?

Through his various enterprises, Sakala has created employment opportunities for young people and supported families, while the Alexander Mumba Foundation has been actively involved in empowering communities through philanthropy, skills development, and social initiatives.

He argued that campaign pledges, especially on job creation, ring hollow when they are not backed by a track record of personal action.

“As MPs, we will talk about job creation. But if you have never created a job in your own life, how will you create jobs for others? Leadership must be proven by example — by the fruit of what we have already done, not just by promises,” he emphasized.

Sakala believes Matero needs leaders who combine entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and people-centered leadership to drive real change and inspire confidence among constituents.

His message of accountability and tested leadership aligns with the New Dawn government under President Hakainde Hichilema, showing that true leaders deliver impact, transparency, and results, not just promises.

Malema calls for crackdown on Operation Dudula, labels them “thugs

Malema calls for crackdown on Operation Dudula, labels them “thugs

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has called for a police probe into Operation Dudula, branding the anti-migrant group a “bunch of thugs” that should be investigated by the Political Killings Task Team.

In a strongly worded post on X on Wednesday, Malema condemned the movement’s vigilante tactics, saying it fuels black-on-black violence and undermines democracy. His comments come after a recent trip to Nigeria, where he advocated for pan-African unity and open borders.

“Operation Dudula is a group of thugs and must be subjected to the Political Killings Task Team. Period!” Malema declared.

Operation Dudula, which became a political party in 2023, has drawn criticism for targeting foreign nationals, blocking healthcare access, and carrying out unauthorized citizenship checks. While no direct link to political killings has been established, Malema insists the group’s actions warrant urgent scrutiny.

The EFF leader’s remarks highlight South Africa’s growing tensions over immigration and xenophobia, as the country battles economic hardship. Critics warn Dudula’s rhetoric risks further inflaming divisions, while Malema’s hard stance on African solidarity continues to spark debate — even within his own support base.

Operation Dudula has not yet responded to Malema’s accusations.

Gauteng High Court to hear Bester, Magudumana bid to halt Netflix documentary

The Gauteng High Court will today hear urgent applications by convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester and his partner, Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, to stop the release of Netflix’s Beauty and the Bester documentary, scheduled to premiere tomorrow, September 12.

The pair argue that the three-part series, which chronicles their 2022 prison escape and subsequent capture, is defamatory and could jeopardize their right to a fair trial.

Their legal teams are seeking an interdict, claiming the documentary would cause irreparable harm.

Netflix is opposing the bid, defending the production as being in the public interest and rooted in journalistic freedom.

FBI confirms release of individual arrested in Charlie Kirk murder

The FBI has confirmed that a person taken into custody following the fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk has been released.

Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was gunned down during a speaking event at Utah Valley University last night.

Authorities initially detained a “subject of interest”, sparking speculation about a breakthrough in the case.

In a later statement, FBI Director Kash Patel clarified that the individual had been questioned and subsequently released. Utah officials added that there was no evidence linking the person to the shooting.

The suspect behind Kirk’s killing remains at large, and law enforcement agencies have launched a nationwide manhunt. Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the attack as a “political assassination,” highlighting the seriousness of the investigation.

The FBI has urged anyone with information to come forward as the search for the shooter continues.

What would happen if NATO country was attacked as Russia commits ‘act of war’ in Polish airspace

Poland confirmed it used air defence to shoot down drones from Russia which had invaded Polish airspace, sparking a conversation about Article 5 of NATO and what would happen if a member country was attacked.

Russia launched drone strikes on Ukraine in its unrelenting effort to take over the country.

Poland’s prime minister Donald Tusk said his country’s armed forces had reported on ‘the shutting down of drones that entered our airspace and could constitute a threat’.

As a NATO country, he added that he was in ‘constant contact’ with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during the incident.

He said: “Last night the Polish airspace was violated by a huge number of Russian drones. Those drones that posed a direct threat were shot down.

How have NATO countries responded to Russia’s drones in Polish airspace?
Poland’s military called it ‘an act of aggression that posed a real threat to the safety of our citizens’ as one of the drones is believed to have hit a residential building in Wyryki.

This event marks a shift in the Russia and Ukraine war, as it is the first time since the war began in 2022 that NATO military assets have engaged Russian equipment.

Russia has been increasingly using Poland’s airspace in its bid to target Ukraine.

Last month, a drone dropped into Poland, and missiles have passed through Poland.

UK prime minister Keir Starmer condemned the ‘the egregious and unprecedented violation of Polish and NATO airspace by Russian drones’.

He said: “I have been in touch with the Polish Prime Minister this morning to make clear our support for Poland, and that we will stand firm in support of Ukraine.”

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called it ‘unacceptable’.

He said: “The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine poses a threat to the security of all of Europe.

“Poland has every right to defend its airspace. We give our full support to Poland, as a NATO ally and EU member. Sweden and Poland stand united in our support for Ukraine.”

Edgars Rinkēvičs, Latvia’s president, also said: “Russian aggression in Ukraine affects us directly and appropriate measures must be taken.”

But what would happen if Russia did attack a NATO ally?

Say, the UK for instance?

What is NATO’s Article 5?
If a NATO country was to be attacked, this would trigger the alliance’s Article 5 mutual defence clause.

Essentially, all NATO allies would be bound to their alliance to one another and would have to respond to the attack with their own forces.

As per NATO, the Article reads:

“The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

“Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.”

The list of NATO allies bound to Article 5 includes Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Will NATO’s Article 5 be invoked?
Last week, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the chief of defence staff in the UK said it’s unlikely to happen.

He said: “There is only a remote chance of a significant direct attack or invasion by Russia on the United Kingdom. And that is the same for the whole of NATO.”

He added that Moscow ‘knows the response would be overwhelming, whether conventional or nuclear’.

The consequence in this situation would be catastrophic.

Of course, Russia has not invaded any NATO countries, but German intelligence chief Bruno Kahl told the Guardian that at some point ‘Russia’s acts of sabotage against western targets’ could ‘eventually’ push NATO to invoke Article 5.

Republican Joe Wilson has been vocal on whether or not Russia’s drones was something that could invoke a conflict and took to his X account to deem Russia flying into Polish airspace an ‘act of war’.

He wrote: “Russia is attacking NATO ally Poland with Iranian shahed drones less than a week after President Trump hosted President Nawrocki at the White House. This is an act of war, and we are grateful to NATO allies for their swift response to war criminal Putin’s continued unprovoked aggression against free and productive nations.”

Russia responds after firing drones into Poland’s airspace in major escalation

0

Russia has responded to allegations that a number of its drones crossed into Polish territory.

This morning Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that NATO soliders and his country’s armed forces had been scrambled to intercept a number of drones – later identified as Russian – which had crossed into Polish airspace overnight.

It marks time since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine where a NATO member has engaged in direct combat with Russia.

Tusk condemned the move as a major provocation, suggesting it was the closest his country had come to ‘open conflict since WW2’.

Russia’s ministry of defence has now responded to the allegations made by Poland and NATO, saying there were no plans to attack Polish territory.

“No targets on the territory of Poland were planned for striking.

“The maximum flight range of the Russian UAVs used in the strike, which allegedly crossed the border with Poland, does not exceed 700 km.”

The statement added that Russia was ready to ‘hold consultations’ with Poland over the presence of drones, saying: “Nevertheless, we are ready to hold consultations with the Ministry of Defence of Poland on this matter.”

The number of drones which crossed into Polish territory is yet to be verified, however Tusk put the estimated number at 19 while Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested the number of drones was around 24.

Of the drones which crossed into Polish airspace, the wreckage of seven and eighth unidentified object have been recovered.

The statement from the Russian defence ministry follows a morning of mixed messages from Vladimir Putin’s country, with the Kremlin previously declining to comment on the allegations.

Meanwhile a Russian diplomat rejected the reports, saying the claims were ‘groundless’.

Belarus, which shares a border with both Poland and Russia, has also commented on the escalation, confirmed that its military had shot down numerous drones which had ‘lost their track’ but did not confirm whether there were Ukrainian or Russian.

The violation of Polish airspace occurred during a wide scale drone and missile attack on Ukraine by Russia.

Several countries have also condemned the presence of Russian drones in Poland, with UK Defence Minister John Healey calling the move ‘reckless’, ‘dangerous’ and ‘unprecedented’.

He also added that UK armed forces would ‘”look at options to bolster’ NATO air defence over Poland.

Everywhere cannabis could be legalised in US as Trump considers major law change

0

Donald Trump is reportedly mulling over a change in the way the US government sees cannabis.

Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump was considering shifting cannabis down the classifications for dangerous drugs and getting it reclassified as a Schedule III drug.

This potential move would not actually legalise cannabis anywhere in the US but it would make the law far less harsh on the drug.

At the moment, cannabis is classified as a Schedule I drug which is kept for drugs like heroin and are considered to have ‘no currently accepted medical use’.

Given that 40 out of 50 US states currently have laws which permit cannabis consumption in some way, shape or form for medical reasons then the US federal law is significantly out of step with the reality in the country.

Trump said last month he was ‘looking at reclassification’ and would make a decision on it in a few weeks time, saying he’d ‘heard great things having to do with medical and bad things having to do with just about everything else’.

The move is something first considered by his predecessor Joe Biden, though his government ultimately ended up not going through with it, and Politico notes that Trump has some strongly anti-cannabis people in senior positions in his government.

Which way Trump will decide is up to him and he has a reputation for changing his mind so it’s tricky to put much stock in what he says until it’s actually written down into law.

The states where cannabis is already legal
Cannabis is already legal for both medical and recreational use in 24 US states, though the amount you can have varies depending on the law.

The states which say it’s legal to own an amount of cannabis are:

Alaska
Arizona
California
Colorado
Connecticut
Delaware
Illinois
Maine
Maryland
Massachusetts
Michigan
Minnesota
Missouri
Montana
Nevada
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York
Ohio
Oregon
Rhode Island
Vermont
Virginia
Washington
It’s usually not a huge amount, but it’s legal.

All of these states, besides New Jersey and Delaware, also permit people to grow a limited amount of cannabis for their own use.

Medically legal, but not recreational
Plenty of other US states allow the use of cannabis for medical reasons but not recreational. They let you use some for medical purposes, which really flies in the face of cannabis being a Schedule I drug which is for substances that have ‘no currently accepted medical use’.

If that was the case then 40 out of 50 US states wouldn’t have made it legal for just such a purpose.

The medically legal but not recreational states are:

Alabama
Arkansas
Florida
Hawaii
Kentucky
Louisiana
Mississippi
Nebraska
New Hampshire
North Dakota
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania
South Dakota
Texas
Utah
West Virginia
In many of these states even if it’s not legal to use cannabis for recreational purposes, the drug is either decriminalised without being explicitly legal or there are caveats where people caught will be put under a ‘cite and release’ where a person is not arrested.

According to VT, Hawaii and Pennsylvania have both been toying with recreational legislation.

The states where cannabis is still illegal
While North Carolina has the drug decriminalised for slight use recreationally, it still see cannabis as illegal, as does:

Georgia
Idaho
Indiana
Iowa
Kansas
South Carolina
Tennessee
Wisconsin

Even in some cities the drug is decriminalised, though it remains illegal elsewhere.

That’s not to say you can’t get cannabis-related products as CBD oil is still available at varying strengths for medicinal reasons, but if the needle is going to move significantly anywhere in the US on cannabis legalisation it’s here.

While the federal government, and by extension Donald Trump, get to set how drugs are classified it’s up to the states to decided how to punish offenders they catch and across the US the law is all over the place.

Jeffrey Epstein’s former assistant reveals leaders and celebrities she claims to have met with him

0

Jeffrey Epstein’s former assistant has claimed she had met with major celebrities and even a royal during her time with the disgraced financer.

Epstein’s former employee, who remains anonymous, made claims in a 238-page book, called The First Fifty Years, compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell years prior.

The full book, which was given to Congress by Epstein’s estate, was released by the Republican-led House Oversight Committee after Democrats only revealed the one Donald Trump page.

It claims that she met big names during her time with Epstein, during his alleged reign of crime against minors and women.

This also comes after a ‘birthday book’ of Epstein’s was released to the public, which contains alleged messages sent to the late convicted sex offender from US presidents.

It is said it contained messages and pictures from many, including US presidents.

Epstein was well known to have made friends with the rich and powerful during his life, particularly US President Donald Trump, who has claimed his alleged birthday message is ‘a fake thing’ and that it’s not even his signature.

While it’s not known exactly who else Epstein was well-acquainted with during his crimes, his former assistant made mention that she had met Prince Andrew through the financer.

Now, Epstein and Prince Andrew’s relationship has caused a long time of controversy.

It all came out when the late Virginia Giuffre accused both the Prince and Epstein of abuse, before she sadly died by suicide at her home in Australia in April this year, at the age of 41.

Her book, Nobody’s Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice, was finished about a year ago, and it’s set to be published posthumously which will dive into exactly what she claims happened during her time with both men.

Not only does the former employee say she met the prince, but she also claimed to have ‘seen the private quarters of Buckingham Palace’ and ‘sat on the Queen of England’s throne.’

The 2003 book also revealed the woman said Epstein flew her around the world and introduced her to many high-profile figures, celebrities, world leaders and royals.

She said Epstein changed her life after the pair met when she was 22 and a divorcee working at a hotel restaurant.

“I have met Prince Andrew, President Clinton, Sultan of Brunei, Donald Trump, Antonio Vergas, Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymour, Peter Brant, Kevin Spacey, Chris Tucker, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, brilliant scientists, lawyers and businessmen,” she said in her letter.

“I have flown on the Concorde, gone sky-diving, taken a flying lesson, been scuba-diving, para-sailing, attended a Victoria Secret fashion show, seen the private quarters of Buckingham Palace, sat on the Queen of England’s throne, rode on a race-track with Max Papis, learned countless skills…”

Aside from the compliments about him, there were also risqué pictures herself in a bikini, posing for whoever was taking the image.

Her note ended with: “what else can I say butt…”

On the Assistant section of the book, it also has a handwritten note to Epstein that reads: “And thought you might like … some bikini shots!”

However, it’s not confirmed whether she wrote the note, or if someone else did.

Donald Trump responds after Russia fired drones into Poland’s airspace in major escalation

Donald Trump has responded after Russia sent drones into Poland’s airspace in a major escalation.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer as already called it an ‘extremely reckless move’ as he said it serves as a reminder of President Vladimir Putin’s ‘blatant disregard for peace’.

The drones were shot down by NATO jets, with the incident marking the first defensive action of its kind since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

While Russia’s ministry of defence has claimed ‘no targets on the territory of Poland were planned for striking’, a TV propagandist went on to make outlandish nuclear threats towards the UK.

And the UK Defence Secretary, John Healey, said he has spoken to the UK Armed Forces ‘to look at options to bolster Nato’s air defence over Poland’.

With tensions seeming to increase from already uncomfortable heights, Trump has now injected his thoughts on the situation.

He wrote on Truth Social earlier this afternoon (10 September): “What’s with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we go!”

As Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk said it was the closest his country had come to ‘open conflict since World War II’, Russia cemented the claim that there was no plan to attack Polish territory.

“The strike objectives have been achieved. All designated targets were hit,” the ministry said. “No targets on the territory of Poland were planned for striking.

“The maximum flight range of the Russian UAVs used in the strike, which allegedly crossed the border with Poland, does not exceed 700 km.”

Defence officials from the country as well as Italy, France, Germany and the UK held talks in London earlier today with Healey saying: “Together we, the E5, totally condemn these attacks.

“Russia’s actions are reckless, they’re dangerous, they’re unprecedented. We see what Putin is doing. Yet again he is testing us. Yet again we will stand firm.”

He added that the UK already had around 300 armed forces personnel in Poland as he said: “And we will do what we can as part of Nato, as part of a collective response that Poland has asked for from us, its Nato allies.”

Putin and Trump met face-to-face in August, as the US President seeks to put an end to Russia’s war on Ukraine. Of course, no agreement was reached during their talks and there seems to continue to be tension between the two leaders.

Witnesses describe ‘shocking’ scene as activist Charlie Kirk shot at university event

A witness in attendance at the university event where conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot has spoken out about the shocking scene.

Footage has recently emerged showing the Donald Tump ally being shot at while visiting Utah Valley University for his The American Comeback Tour.

The founder of Turning Point USA, Kirk is one of the biggest conservative influencers in the US. Aged 31, he often holds these open-air debates on university campuses across the states.

Police say a shot was fired at about 12:10 local time and that a suspect is now in custody while investigations take place. Kirk’s condition is currently unknown.

While videos circulate of students running as a bang is heard, Trump wrote on Truth Social: “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot.

Speaking to Fox News, former US representative Jason Chaffetz said those in attendance ‘hit the deck’ and ‘scattered’ after hearing the gunshots. “The shot came straight at him,” he added, as he described the violence as ‘shocking’.

In one video, Kirk is sat under a tent branded with the words ‘THE AMERICAN COMEBACK’ and ‘PROVE ME WRONG’ as students crowd around and others watch from nearby elevated structures.

As the activist is speaking, a loud bang can be heard and a person shouts: “Oh my god!” Audience members scatter as another shouts: “Go! Run, run, run!”

“Today at about 12.10, a shot was fired at the visiting speaker, Charlie Kirk,” the University said in a statement. “He was hit and taken from the location by his security. Campus police is investigating, a suspect is in custody.”

Vice President JD Vance wrote on X: “Say a prayer for Charlie Kirk, a genuinely good guy and a young father.”

The FBI is ‘closely monitoring’ reports of the shooting, as director Kash Patel posted: “Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected.

“Agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation.”

Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of Defense – which following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on September 5, now has a secondary title of Secretary of War, stated: “Prayers for Charlie Kirk. An incredible Christian, American, and human being. May the healing hand of Jesus Christ be upon him.”

And Utah Governor Spencer Cox says the attacker will ‘be held fully accountable’.

He wrote on X: “Violence has no place in our public life. Americans of every political persuasion must unite in condemning this act.”

High School in Jamaica Bans Female Students From Having Baby Hair Edges

0

An all-girls’ school in Jamaica has banned students from wearing styled baby hairs, sparking mixed reactions online. The school said the rule is about keeping appearances neat, but critics see it as unnecessary and restrictive.

St. Andrew High School for Girls (SAHS), a respected institution in Kingston, founded in 1925, announced the new policy through Instagram. In its notice, the school wrote, “Please be advised that the wearing of ‘edges’ is now officially banned on campus. Remember, curtains belong in the house, not on foreheads! Let’s keep our looks neat and school-ready. We appreciate your cooperation in upholding our standards of excellence as we continue honoring the legacy and inspiring the future!”

SAHS has a long history of discipline and academic achievement. Known for its motto “Life More Abundant,” the school has produced leaders in law, politics, medicine, and business. The administration framed the ban as part of its tradition of high standards and focus on learning.

According to Black Information Network, the decision quickly drew criticism on social media. One user asked, “How does edges stop the girls from looking neat and ready for school?” Others argued the ban undermines the idea of self-expression and clashes with the school’s mission of holistic development.

Supporters, however, defended the school’s stance. Some pointed out that strict dress codes are a normal part of Caribbean education. “Please remember and understand that Jamaica is an island with its own norms. At that school, academics is their focus. It’s one of the best high schools in the island for a reason. I can respect that the U.S. is different and allows children to express themselves at school through fashion, but our culture requires children to focus on learning and sports, nothing else,” one person wrote.

The debate reflects broader conversations about how schools balance tradition, discipline, and personal expression. While some see the ban as outdated, others view it as a continuation of values that have long defined one of Jamaica’s top-performing schools.

White Couple Allegedly Deleted Court Files to Protect USF Doctors in Black Patient’s Wrongful Death Case

0

The Washington family, a prominent African American family with deep ties to the University of South Florida (USF), is sounding the alarm on what they call a blatant cover-up. At the center of the scandal are Victor Crist, the Hillsborough County Clerk of Court, and his wife, Angela, a longtime employee of USF.

Together, the couple is accused of conspiring to shield USF and its doctors from accountability in the wrongful death of Patricia Washington by erasing critical court records. The Florida Supreme Court appointed Kemba Lewis, an African American circuit judge, to oversee the case; however, her first attempt was to dismiss the case without a hearing.

The Wrongful Death of Patricia Washington

Patricia Washington underwent surgery at Tampa General Hospital (TGH), performed by a surgeon employed by USF Health. That procedure left her with an open wound near her heart, which eventually became septic. Despite clear medical risks, the doctor refused to close or treat the wound. Patricia later died from sepsis, and troublingly, the physician allowed his medical license to lapse, allegedly after his privileges at TGH were revoked.

The Washington family filed a verified wrongful death complaint in Hillsborough County, identifying USF Health doctors and TGH as defendants. The case was initially docketed as 25-CA-2858, with summonses issued to the parties. Another related case, 24-CA-1919, documented presuit compliance notifications, ensuring the family had met procedural requirements. But as the two-year statute of limitations deadline loomed, both cases suddenly vanished from the court’s official record.

Allegations Against Clerk of Court Victor Crist

The family’s investigation uncovered that the disappearance of Patricia’s cases wasn’t a clerical error—it was deliberate. They accuse Clerk of Court Victor Crist of ordering his office to delete the filings, effectively erasing Patricia’s wrongful death action and presuit compliance evidence. For a sitting Clerk of Court, such an act represents an unprecedented breach of neutrality, converting the court itself into an active participant in shielding USF from lawsuits and bad publicity.

The Nepotism Connection: Angela Crist at USF

The motive, the Washingtons allege, lies in the Crist family’s ties to USF. Victor’s wife, Angela, is a longtime employee of the university. USF not only employs her but also employs the very doctors at USF Health and Morsani College of Medicine who treated Patricia at TGH before her death. The Washingtons believe this link represents a direct conflict of interest and points to nepotism as a driving force behind the destruction of their legal filings.

A Pattern of Judicial Protection for USF

The family’s ordeal doesn’t stop with the Crists. They cite a broader pattern of judges and court officials stepping in to insulate USF from accountability. Retired Judge Gregory P. Holder allegedly manipulated court systems to issue harmful rulings against USF critics, while Circuit Judge Melissa Polo issued an extraordinary injunction in 2022 that barred the Washingtons from pursuing public records access against the university. Federal Judge Steven D. Merryday later reinforced Polo’s order, locking the family out of both state and federal courts.

Calls for Federal Investigation

The Washingtons are urging the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI to widen their lens beyond Title VI enforcement at USF and directly probe the university’s influence over the Florida judiciary. They argue that the Crist conspiracy—deleting wrongful death filings from official records—should be the starting point of such an inquiry. The family points to surveillance footage of Crist and several judges meeting privately with Judge Merryday on June 10, 2025, as further evidence of collusion.

“Court officials are not supposed to conspire with universities to make cases disappear,” the family said in a statement. “The deletion of Patricia’s files shows just how far the corruption has spread, and it cannot stand.”

More Children Are Obese Than Underweight – Unicef

For the first time, there are more children in the world who are obese than underweight, according to a major study by children’s charity Unicef.

Around one in 10 of those aged between five and 19 years old – around 188 million children and young people – are now thought to be affected by obesity.

Researchers blame a shift from traditional diets to ones heavily reliant on ultra-processed foods that are relatively cheap and high in calories.

Unicef, an agency of the United Nations, is urging governments to protect children’s diets from unhealthy ingredients and stop the ultra-processed food industry from interfering in policy decisions.

Overweight and malnourished

When health experts used to refer to malnourished children, that was often read as those who were underweight.

Not any more – that term now also refers to the impact of obesity on the health and development of children. Even in poorer countries that is now a real concern.

Children are considered overweight when they are significantly heavier than a healthy weight for their age, sex and height.

Obesity is a severe form of being overweight, and is linked to a higher risk of type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers, in later life.

Throughout childhood, good nutrition, including plenty of fruit, vegetables and protein, plays a vital role in growth, cognitive development and mental health.

But many traditional diets are being displaced by ultra-processed foods, often high in sugar, starch, salt, unhealthy fats and additives.

Unicef executive director Catherine Russell says the challenges posed by obesity should not be under-estimated. She said it’s “a growing concern” that can affect the health and development of children.

1 in 10 are now obese

Undernutrition – which can manifest itself as wasting and stunting – remains a significant problem in the under-fives in many low and middle income countries.

But the latest data from Unicef – a study that draws on data from more than 190 countries – finds the prevalence of underweight children aged 5-19 has declined since 2000, from nearly 13% to 9.2%.

Obesity rates however have increased from 3% to 9.4%, meaning that almost one in 10 children are now obese.

The number of overweight children – which includes those who are obese – has also increased to the extent that now 1 in five school-age children and adolescents are overweight.

That’s roughly 391 million children across the globe, the study estimates.

Obesity now exceeds underweight in all regions of the world, except sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia

The highest rates of obesity among children and young people are found in some of the Pacific Island states, including Niue (38%), the Cook Islands (37%), and Nauru (33%).

But many high-income countries also face a serious obesity problem. Among 5-19 year olds, 27% are obese in Chile, 21% in the United States, and 21% in the United Arab Emirates.

Unicef’s Catherine Russell says: “In many countries we are seeing the double burden of malnutrition – the existence of stunting and obesity.

“This requires targeted interventions. Nutritious and affordable food must be available to every child to support their growth and development.

“We urgently need policies that support parents and caretakers to access nutritious and healthy foods for their children.”

Call to action

Unicef warns that the health impacts and economic costs of doing nothing are potentially enormous.

The report estimates that by 2035, the global economic impact of overweight and obesity is expected to surpass $4 trillion annually.

It urges governments to take action, including on the labelling and marketing of food.

That might include legal measures to protect children’s diets by removing ultra-processed foods from school canteens, introducing taxes on unhealthy foods and drinks and encouraging food producers to make changes to products – known as reformulation – to limit unhealthy ingredients and harmful substitutes.

The report also calls for policy making to be protected from interference by the ultra-processed food industry.

Ultra-processed food and drink producers could be banned from involvement in developing and implementing policy and any industry political lobbying would have to be officially reported.

Rwanda Blasts ‘Baseless’ Genocide Allegations at UN Human Rights Council

0

Rwanda has issued a strong rebuttal rejecting allegations by the Democratic Republic of Congo that it is backing armed groups and complicit in genocidal acts in the troubled east of the country.

Addressing the 60th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday, Rwanda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Urujeni Bakuramutsa, accused Kinshasa of peddling unfounded claims and weaponizsng genocide accusations to divert attention from its own failures.

“We will not accept being continuously subjected to baseless accusations,” Bakuramutsa said.

She stressed that linking Rwanda to M23 rebels or genocide required verifiable evidence, not what she described as “fabricated reports.”

Her remarks came after DR Congo’s Minister of Human Rights alleged Rwanda’s complicity in atrocities in North Kivu, where UN experts and Human Rights Watch have accused Kigali of supporting M23 rebels.

Bakuramutsa warned that accusing Rwanda of genocide was a grave provocation.

“It’s a red line, Mr President, for my country to be accused of genocide… I will not allow for that to be mentioned here in the UN premises and accept that this happens under your watch,” she told the Council president.

The ambassador invoked Rwanda’s painful past, reminding delegates of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in which more than a million people were killed.

She argued that invoking genocide allegations against Kigali was irresponsible and risked trivialising international law.

Bakuramutsa further accused DR Congo of enabling the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a militia with roots in the perpetrators of the 1994 genocide, to continue spreading violence and genocidal ideology in the region.

She also questioned the effectiveness of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, saying its ballooning costs had failed to deliver peace or protect civilians.

“The UN’s costliest mission cannot be measured by reports,” she said, calling for accountability based on concrete facts rather than political narratives.

The exchange comes amid continuing tensions between Kigali and Kinshasa, with cross-border skirmishes and a humanitarian crisis deepening in eastern Congo.

Kinshasa and Kigali fell into deep diplomatic halls when the M23 group captured North Kivu capital of Goma in January and overran swathes of the mineral-rich eastern DR Congo.

The group has since established a parallel government and claims to have restored social amenities to its populace while generating huge revenues from mineral trade.

Four Black Saints you have probably never heard about

History was made on Sunday in St. Peter’s Square when Pope Leo XIV declared Carlo Acutis, the 15-year-old tech prodigy known as “God’s Influencer”, the first Millennial saint.

Acutis, known as “God’s influencer” after building a website cataloging over 100 Church-approved Eucharistic miracles, died in 2006 when he was 15. His death came days after he was diagnosed with leukemia. It is reported that a Costa Rican student was healed from severe head trauma after her mother prayed at his tomb following his passing.

The term “saint” refers to someone who led an exemplary holy life dedicated to Jesus Christ. In the Roman Catholic Church, such individuals go through a process of canonization to be officially recognized as saints by the Church. There are more than 10,000 saints recognized by the Roman Catholic Church, and this figure includes numerous Black Catholic Saints.

While there aren’t currently any formally canonized African-American saints, some are on the path to sainthood, such as Venerable Augustus Tolton and Servant of God Sister Thea Bowman.

Here are four Black Saints you should know about:

Saint Martin de Porres

He is the patron saint of mixed-race people, barbers, innkeepers, public health workers, and all those seeking racial harmony.

Born on December 9, 1579, St. Martin de Porres of the Dominican Order was beatified in 1837 by Pope Gregory XVI and canonized in 1962 by Pope John XXIII, becoming the first Black saint in the Americas.

He was born to a Spanish nobleman, Don Juan de Porres, and a young freed Black slave, Ana Velázquez from Panama.

His great distinction was that “he was noted for his work on behalf of the poor, establishing an orphanage and a children’s hospital. He maintained an austere lifestyle, which included fasting and abstaining from meat. Among the many miracles attributed to him were those of levitation, bilocation, miraculous knowledge, instantaneous cures, and an ability to communicate with animals,” reports the aaregistry.org.

Saint Charles Lwanga

Saint Charles Lwanga, who is one of 22 Ugandan martyrs, defended his young adult companions (aged 13 to 30) against the homosexual demands of the Bugandan (Ugandan) king, Mwanga. Mwanga came to power at the age of 16 and demanded that Christians renounce their faith. He also demanded that his servants perform sexual favours for him.

When they were imprisoned for refusing the king’s demands, Saint Lwanga encouraged and instructed his fellow young adults in the Catholic faith. For declining to engage in the immoral acts sanctioned by the king, Lwanga was burned to death at Namugongo on June 3, 1886, by King Mwanga’s order.

He is today regarded as the patron saint of African Catholic Youth Action, converts, and torture victims.

Saint Bakhita

Born in Olgossa in the Darfur region of southern Sudan, Josephine (which was not her first real name) was kidnapped by slave traders at the age of 7, sold into slavery and given the name Bakhita, which means fortunate.

For more than a decade, she was bought and sold several times. In 1883, Josephine was eventually sold to Callisto Legnani, Italian consul in Khartoum, Sudan. After two years, he took Bakhita to Italy and gave her to his friend Augusto Michieli. From there, she served as a family maid and babysitter to Michieli’s daughter, Mimmina.

As she accompanied Mimmina to Venice’s Institute of the Catechumens, run by the Canossian Sisters, Bakhita began to learn about God and Catholicism and got drawn to the Catholic Church.

On January 9, 1890, at 30 years old, she was baptized into the Catholic faith, taking the name of “Josephine Margaret.” On that same date, she was confirmed and made her First Holy Communion, the other two sacraments of initiation.

Her owners later wanted to take her back to Sudan, but she refused. Since slavery was actually illegal in Italy, a court ruled her free. She later joined the Institute of St. Magdalene of Canossa religious community. Also known as “Mother Bakhita”, Josephine passed away on February 8, 1947, at the Canossian Convent, Schio, surrounded by the Sisters.

In 1959, the first steps toward her beatification began. She was beatified on May 17, 1992, and later she was canonized during the celebration of the Great Jubilee of the Holy Year 2000. To date, many believe that her message of forgiveness and mercy has provided humanity with hope in the midst of a period of hatred and violence. Venerated as a modern African saint, and adopted as the patron saint of Sudan, many people still receive graces through her intercession.

Saint Kizito

The patron saint of children and primary schools, Saint Kizito was the youngest of the 22 Ugandan martyrs.

When he was 14 years old, King Mwanga II of Buganda (Uganda) burned him to death after getting to know that he was a Christian. Kizito and eleven others were wrapped in reed mats and laid on a furnace bonfire where they were burned alive because they refused to abandon their Christian faith. While being burned alive, history says he recited the “Our Father.” His last words were, “Goodbye my friends, we are on the right path.”

Saint Kizito’s feast day is June 3. He was beatified in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV and canonised on October 18, 1964, by Pope Paul VI.

Judge blocks Trump from sacking first black female federal Governor Lisa Cook

A US federal judge has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s attempt to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, allowing her to remain in her role while she challenges her dismissal in court.

Judge Jia Cobb issued the ruling on Tuesday, September 9, just a week before a closely watched Federal Reserve meeting on interest rates. In her opinion, Cobb said Cook was “substantially likely” to succeed on some claims, including her argument that Trump’s move violated the Federal Reserve Act’s requirement that governors can only be removed “for cause.”

“The public interest in Federal Reserve independence weighs in favor of Cook’s reinstatement,” Cobb wrote, noting that her case marks the first attempted removal of a Fed governor in the institution’s 111-year history.

Trump, who has long pressured the Fed to cut interest rates more aggressively, did not respond to questions about the ruling when asked by reporters in Washington on Tuesday evening.

Cook’s attorney, Abbe David Lowell, welcomed the decision, saying it reaffirmed the need to protect the central bank from political interference. “Allowing the President to unlawfully remove Governor Cook on unsubstantiated and vague allegations would endanger the stability of our financial system and undermine the rule of law,” Lowell said.

The Trump administration has accused Cook of mortgage fraud, claiming she listed two different homes, one in Michigan and another in Georgia, as her primary residence in 2021 to secure favorable loan terms. Cook has denied wrongdoing.

In her opinion, Cobb questioned the nature of the accusations, stressing that “for cause” removals do not apply to conduct that occurred before an official began serving in office.

Trump announced last month on social media that he was firing Cook, escalating his efforts to reshape the Fed. He has frequently criticized Chairman Jerome Powell, once calling him “Mr. Too Late”, and demanded immediate rate cuts to counter the economic impact of tariffs.

Cook, who joined the board in 2022, made history as the first Black woman to serve as a Federal Reserve governor. Her reinstatement means she will take part in next week’s rate-setting meeting while the lawsuit proceeds

Protesters call Trump ‘Hitler of our time’ as he dines at Washington DC restaurant

0

Donald Trump was booed by protesters shouting “Free DC! Free Palestine! Trump is the Hitler of our time!” as he dined at a Washington restaurant.

Videos posted online showed the US president approaching the shouting protesters in the restaurant, pausing a few feet away from them for a few moments, nodding and smiling without offering a response.

Seconds later, Trump gestured for the area to be cleared out, saying “come on, let’s go.”

Secret Service agents then moved the protesters, who waved Palestinian flag.

Others in the restaurant can be heard booing or chanting “U-S-A! U-S-A!”

Code Pink, a feminist activist group, claimed credit for the protest.

“While Trump, JD Vance, Marco Rubio, Pete Hegseth and others feasted at a steakhouse, we stood our ground and told them the truth: Free DC. Free Palestine. Trump is the Hitler of our time,” they wrote on social media.

US tech billionaire Larry Ellison has overtaken Elon Musk as the world’s richest person

US tech billionaire Larry Ellison has overtaken Elon Musk as the world’s richest person.

Ellison’s wealth surged after shares in the company, Oracle, which he co-founded and in which he owns a stake of 41%, rocketed in early trading on Wednesday, September 10.

Oracle shares rose by more than 40% in early trading to $340 a share, valuing the business software company at $958bn (£707bn) and Ellison’s stake at $393bn, just ahead of Musk’s fortune of $384bn, according to Bloomberg’s billionaires index.

The jump in the shares is the company’s largest single-day increase ever and the biggest ever one-day wealth increase on the Bloomberg index.

Ellison also has other sources of wealth, including a stake in electric carmaker Tesla, where Musk is chief executive, a sailing team, the Indian Wells Open tennis tournament, and an island in Hawaii, according to Bloomberg.

Musk has a close relationship with Ellison – who is often described as a mentor to the South Africa-born tech entrepreneur.

Ellison sat on the board of Tesla between 2018 and 2022 and put $1bn into Musk’s purchase of Twitter – since rebranded as X.

According to Walter Isaacson’s biography of Musk, when the Tesla CEO asked Ellison to invest in Twitter, Ellison said he would put in a billion dollars or “whatever you recommend”.

Musk is a frequent visitor to Ellison’s Hawaiian island, Lanai, according to the book.

Ellison is also a supporter of Donald Trump and has regularly appeared alongside the US president at the White House, including the launch of the Stargate project to invest $500bn in artificial intelligence infrastructure in the US. Musk, a prominent backer of Trump’s 2024 election campaign, also had a strong relationship with Trump before it imploded earlier this year.

Oracle accounts for the majority of Ellison’s wealth and its value has been boosted by demand from AI companies for its cloud services, which provide computing capacity for firms such as ChatGPT developer OpenAI, who need vast datacentres to power their technology.

Musk, the chief executive of Tesla who also owns the SpaceX rocket company, became the world’s richest person for the first time in 2021, according to Bloomberg, before relinquishing it to Bezos and French luxury goods tycoon Bernard Arnault.

He regained it last year but, just over 300 days later, he was dislodged again by 81-year-old Ellison.

Prince Harry has met with his father King Charles III in London for the first time since February 2024

Prince Harry has met with his father King Charles III in London for the first time since February 2024.

The Duke of Sussex, who has been in the UK since Monday for a series of engagements, was seen arriving at Clarence House in a black car on Wednesday, just over an hour after the king returned from Scotland.

Prince Harry and King Charles seen together for first time since February 2024

According to BBC, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King had a private tea with his son, the Duke of Sussex, during a visit to the royal residence that lasted about 50 minutes.

The reunion comes after years of strained relations. Harry cut ties with the royal family in 2020 and relocated to California with his wife Meghan Markle. He last saw his father in early 2024, when he flew to the UK following the king’s cancer diagnosis.

Since then, Harry has admitted they were not on speaking terms, citing the ongoing court cases he is fighting in the UK and the allegations he made against the royal family in interviews and his memoir. Despite that, he has previously said he was hoping for reconciliation, stressing that he “does not know how much longer” his father has.

Harry, who on Monday visited the grave of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, has returned to the UK several times in the last year but never managed to see his father until now — even when they were only miles apart.

Speculation of a possible meeting grew in July when King Charles’s press secretary was spotted in London with Harry’s communications team. Now, the long-awaited father-and-son reunion has finally taken place.

Utah GOP under fire for blaming Charlie Kirk shooting on campus liberalism

0

Following the shooting of right-wing activist and Donald Trump ally Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University in Orem, while politicians on both sides of the aisle offered prayers, the chairman of the Utah Republican Party put out a statement blaming the attack on liberalism on college campuses.

“The attack on Charlie Kirk and free speech is evil, pure and simple,” said the statement put out by Robert Axson. “The hate, violence and evil being peddled by radical extremists has no place in this country! Schools and social media have become breeding grounds for liberal hate. Enough!”

This statement triggered immediate backlash from commenters on social media.

“Despicable responses from the GOP in a fragile moment,” wrote Utah state Sen. Nate Blouin. “Universities in Utah by order of the legislature are not allowed to regulate guns on campus. To make political allegations before any information is known suggests a deep desire to fan the flames rather than find solutions.”

“In a moment where every single person on both of sides of the aisle are unanimously condemning political violence, this feels like exactly the wrong message,” wrote Deseret News contributing writer and political strategist Steve Pierce.

“If a man gets shot and your immediate first reaction is to blame your political opponents, maybe YOU’RE the problem,” wrote University of Utah College Democrats founder Mason McCann.

“So totally tone deaf and just the kind of mentality that leads to this kind of thing. Please delete,” wrote former U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica Luis Moreno.

“Third sentence is not helpful, at all,” wrote Boise, Idaho City Council member Jordan Morales, who spent one semester at Utah Valley University. “Meet the moment, this isn’t it. We must disagree better as [Utah Gov. Spencer Cox] would say. Don’t know who Robert is tbh.”

Seven Chinese Nationals Jailed 20 Years Each for Trafficking Malawians in South Africa

Seven Chinese nationals have been sentenced to 20 years in prison each by the Johannesburg High Court after being found guilty of human trafficking charges involving Malawian nationals.

The convicts — Kevin Tsao, Chen Hui, Qin Li, Jiaqing Zhou, Ma Biao, Dai Junying, and Zhang Zhilian — were in March convicted on 158 counts of kidnapping and forced labour. The case involved 91 Malawians, including minors, who were rescued during a 2019 Hawks raid at Beautiful City Pty Ltd, a factory located in Village Deep, Johannesburg.

During the raid, authorities discovered that the Malawians were undocumented and had been subjected to inhumane working conditions.

They were denied proper wages, leave days, and basic rights, effectively trapped in what investigators described as modern-day slavery.

Delivering judgment, the court outlined the seriousness of the offenses, noting that the syndicate exploited vulnerable migrants for profit.

Ronda Rousey disrespected WWE and the entire business and nobody cares about her- Booker T

Booker T says Ronda Rousey disrespected WWE and the entire business and nobody cares about her

“Nobody cares about Ronda Rousey but Ronda Rousey. She’s got a very, very high self-esteem. She looks at herself a certain way. But I don’t think anybody else looks at Ronda that way. The business gave her everything and she just spat in its face.

I can almost guarantee you this…Ronda probably made more money in WWE than she ever did in UFC. And to speak like that about the company that gave her so much? It’s an insult. We really gotta think about letting certain people into our world.”

MAGA races to cast Charlie Kirk killing as left-wing violence

Shortly after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot on Wednesday, MAGA began spinning the incident as a politically motivated attack.

Kirk was shot in the neck while giving a speech on the University of Utah campus. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Kirk died of his wounds.

No suspects have been arrested, according to The Associated Press.

The lack of explanation from the shooter didn’t stop MAGA internet personalities and commentators from spinning Kirk’s shooting as an example of left-wing violence against conservatives.

“The Left is the party of murder,” Elon Musk posted on X.

“The Left lectured us for the last decade about the dangers of violence from the Right,” Shaun Maguire, a partner at Sequoia Capital, posted on X. “From the assassination attempts of President Trump to Brian Thompson, the United Healthcare CEO, being murdered. Now to Charlie Kirk. The danger was actually on the Left.”

“Charlie Kirk was answering a question about rampant left-wing violence in America when he was shot today,” MAGA influencer Benny Johnson posted on X. “You can hear the crack of a rifle in this video from approximately 100 yards. I am burning with righteous anger. Pray right now for Charlie and his family.”

“The Left is consumed with hatred,” Ned Ryun, CEO of conservative grassroots organization American Majority, posted on X.

“This is the turning point,” conservative internet personality Matt Van Swol posted on X.

“I don’t think the Left knows what they’ve just started,” political consultant Joey Mannarino posted on x.

“Enough political violence from the left!” conservative activist Vernon Jones posted on X.

“I am so sick of the Left wing loser a–holes,” actor Kevin Sorbo posted on X. “They are the most violent ones in the country today.”

GloRilla Accused of Stealing ‘No BBL’ Catchphrase – But Her Lawyers Say It’s Just Slang

American rapper GloRilla is asking a judge to dismiss a copyright lawsuit filed against her by New Orleans bounce artist and influencer Natalie Henderson, who claims the Tennessee rapper stole the phrase “No BBL” for her track “Never Find” from the Glorious album.

The lawsuit, filed in June, alleges that Henderson known on social media as slimdabodylast coined the phrase “all natural, no BBL” on her single “All Natural,” released in May 2023. On that track, Henderson raps: “All naturale, no BBL / Mad hes go to hell.”* She argues that Glo copied the tagline on her November 2024 release “Never Find,” where she spits: “Natural, no BBL / But I’m still gon’ give ’em hell.”

On Monday (Sept. 8), GloRilla’s legal team responded, urging the court to throw out the case. Her attorneys argue Henderson has not proven that Glo was even aware of her song, and that the phrase itself is not eligible for copyright protection.

“The phrase ‘natural[e], no BBL’ referring to a person with a natural body who has not undergone the Brazilian Butt Lift cosmetic procedure is too common, everyday, trite, and cliched to be protectable by copyright,” the filing reads.

The judge has not yet issued a ruling on the matter.

BEMBAS ARE MAJORITY IN CABINET – NKANDU

BEMBAS ARE MAJORITY IN CABINET – NKANDU

By Mubanga Mubanaga

UPND deputy spokesperson Elvis Nkandu says President Hakainde Hichilema is running the most inclusive government, with nine Cabinet ministers from the Bemba region out of a 27-member Cabinet.

And Nkandu said Nkana Independent member of parliament Binwell Mpundu’s blood was still PF and the UPND did not expect him to praise them.

Last week, Mpundu alleged that the UPND government was the worst since Zambia got its independence and accused them of dividing the country across political and regional lines, among other allegations.

Reacting to Mpundu’s assertions, Nkandu – who is Kaputa member of parliament (UPND) and also youth and sports minister – defended President Hichilema as running an inclusive government. He cited the composition

HICHILEMA’S ILLEGAL MOVE ON JUDGES’ SALARIES THREATENS THE RULE OF LAW

HICHILEMA’S ILLEGAL MOVE ON JUDGES’ SALARIES THREATENS THE RULE OF LAW

By Brian Matambo – Lusaka, Zambia

On May 16, 2025, President Hakainde Hichilema signed Statutory Instrument No. 24 of 2025, a document that on the surface looked simple: it set the salaries and housing allowances for Zambia’s judges. But behind that technical language lies a dangerous truth, the President has broken the Constitution, defied a binding ruling of the Constitutional Court, and dragged Zambia back toward executive impunity.

This is not a minor mistake. It is a direct challenge to the principle that no one, not even the Head of State, is above the Constitution.

A COURT RULING IGNORED
In July 2023, the Constitutional Court settled this very question once and for all in the case brought by lawyer John Sangwa, SC. The judges ruled clearly: only the Emoluments Commission, acting on advice from the Judicial Service Commission, has the power to set the pay of judges. The President’s old powers to do so under outdated legislation were struck down and declared unconstitutional.

The Court even ordered the Minister of Finance to report to Parliament every six months on progress toward full compliance. It was a victory for constitutionalism and for the independence of the judiciary.

But two years later, President Hichilema has ignored that judgment and issued his own statutory instrument as if nothing ever happened.

WHY IT MATTERS
At stake here is more than money. Judges’ salaries are a cornerstone of their independence. If a President can dictate how much judges earn, he can influence them, control them, or punish them. That is why the framers of our Constitution created the Emoluments Commission, to remove politics from the question of pay and protect the judiciary from interference.

By usurping those powers, Hichilema has not just signed a piece of paper. He has undermined the very independence of the judiciary and shown contempt for the authority of the Constitutional Court.

THE SLIPPERY SLOPE TO LAWLESSNESS
Zambia has been here before. Past leaders chipped away at institutions, ignored court rulings, and turned the Presidency into an all-powerful throne. Each time, it was done in the name of expedience, but the result was the same, weaker courts, weaker Parliament, weaker democracy.

For a man who campaigned on the promise of restoring the rule of law, Hichilema’s actions mark a sharp betrayal. If the President can openly disregard a Constitutional Court judgment, what prevents him from ignoring other parts of the Constitution that inconvenience him?

A CALL TO RESIST
This is not just Sangwa’s fight. It is the fight of every Zambian who believes in justice and accountability. The Judiciary, the Emoluments Commission, and Parliament must stand up now. To remain silent is to accept a return to one-man rule dressed in democratic clothing.

The President must withdraw this unconstitutional statutory instrument immediately. Anything less will confirm that State House believes it is above the law.

HISTORY WILL JUDGE
Future generations will ask: when the Constitution was trampled, who stood up and who remained quiet?

President Hichilema still has a chance to correct course. But if he does not, his legacy will not be of reform and progress, but of arrogance, betrayal, and the slow killing of judicial independence.

The people of Zambia deserve better. Our Constitution deserves respect. And our judges deserve freedom from political control.

PF REMAINS THE BIGGEST POLITICAL PARTY – MUNDUBILE.

PF REMAINS THE BIGGEST POLITICAL PARTY – MUNDUBILE.

MPOROKOSO PF MP Brian Mundubile says PF remains the biggest political party in the country despite the UPND’s quest to destroy it.

Mundubile says the party’s size is evident in the large turnout of its members during national holidays like Women’s Day, Youth Day and Independence Day.

And Mundubile says Gilbert Liswaniso’s remarks that the ruling party does not need competition are an admission of their failure to govern.

Recently, Liswaniso, who is UPND National Youth Chairman, said the UPND felt good that the PF was dying because they did not need competition.

Liswaniso also said government was investing heavily in the energy sector so that there would be no talks about load shedding by 2029.

Commenting on this in an interview, Monday, Mundubile said the UPND government had failed to kill the PF despite their continued attempts since they assumed office.

“It’s laughable. The only time a ruling party would not want to have competition is when they know that they have failed. So, those statements alone, that they do not want competition, are an admission that they have failed. So, the Zambians know that the UPND has failed and I am happy they talked about ending loadshedding in 2029. When President Hakainde Hichilema was campaigning before 2021, he was campaigning to end loadshedding within the five years of his presidency. So, jumping to 2029 is an admittance that they have indeed failed. It is a fact that the only thing UPND has done from the time they were elected [has been] to fight the PF. That’s the only thing they have done at the expense of delivering to the Zambian people. From the first day they got into power, they began to fight the PF, they forgot about serving the Zambian people. They forgot about delivering to the Zambian people,” he said.

“What has disappointed them is that for four years straight, they have failed to kill the PF. Today, PF remains the biggest not only opposition political party, it’s the biggest political party in Zambia. The PF is the biggest political party in Zambia. To confirm what I am saying, as opposed to those organised meetings where members are transported to a particular area because the President is there, he should take note of a national day like Independence Day where people are celebrating countrywide. PF shows its full size in numbers on such days like Women’s Day, Youth Day, and Independence Day. So, despite the vigorous and violent fight that the UPND has put up to try and destroy the PF, the PF has stood firm and today, it has showed its full resilience, it has showed that it is very much alive as opposed to what the UPND is saying and they wished it could die”.

He added that the PF was more alive than ever and was ready to take over the reins of power in 2026.

“It (PF) is more alive than ever now that it is getting ready to take over the reins of power. So, I am happy that they are now admitting that they don’t want competition because they have nothing to show people what they have done in the past five years. PF is very much alive, we’ve stood the persecution the past four years. So, saying PF is dying is wishful thinking,” said Mundubile.

PeP is an attractive party – Sean Tembo

PeP is an attractive party – Sean Tembo

PATRIOTS for Economic Progress (PeP) is an attractive opposition party, its leader Sean Tembo has declared.

Tembo said within an hour of making a call for submissions for people who wanted to contest parliamentary and local government seats on the PeP ticket, more than 2000 applications poured in yesterday.

In an interview with Kalemba, Tembo said just yesterday, after calling on candidates interested in standing on the PeP ticket in 2026 to contact him, he received over 2,000 applications in just one hour.

He revealed that over 5000 adoption applications were expected to be received by the end of today.

Tembo explained that his party is looking for candidates who live in the communities they wish to represent and who are committed to addressing local problems.

“We are looking for vibrant candidates, people who are fired up. People who believe they can adequately represent their people. If they have previous experience they are welcome but even those who don’t have experience.”

“The candidate should be resident in the area where they want to represent. From previous experience, we have noticed that it’s difficult to sell a candidate who does not live among the people that he or she wants to represent,” said Tembo.

The opposition leader also encouraged women to take the lead in shaping the future of their communities by applying for political roles under PeP.

“We also want to make a special appeal to women and girls, to step forward. When we look at issues that face communities like water, it’s women and girls who are highly affected. So when women and girls lead, they do it better,” he stated.

He shared that the adoption process is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

“So we are talking about the next three weeks. The reason is simple, we believe that people need adequate time to mobilise on the ground, while the political noise is still low. Because once the political noise rises towards election time, it becomes very difficult to mobilise on the ground and for a candidate to be known because there’s too much noise,” he told Kalemba.

“We will have to adopt people in all the wards and the last week of September, we will do with MPs, mayors and others.”

Tembo disclosed that once the adoption process ends, the party will begin touring various parts of the country to distribute regalia to candidates and give them guidance on how to mobilise on the ground.

UPND HAS TAKEN OVER PF, EMPLOYED TACTICS TO DISADVANTAGED opposition – CHISENGA

UPND HAS TAKEN OVER PF, EMPLOYED TACTICS TO DISADVANTAGED opposition – CHISENGA

MAMBILIMA PF MP Jean Chisenga says the only reason the UPND is not worried about the 2026 general election is because they have already employed tactics to disadvantage the opposition.

In a recent interview, UPND Lusaka Province Chairperson Obvious Mwaliteta said unlike other former ruling parties, the UPND didn’t know tricks of how to kill the opposition.

But responding to that in an interview, Tuesday, Chisenga argued that the UPND had in fact taken over PF.

She further said some laws being enacted under the UPND government would come back to haunt them.

“First of all, they cannot say that they don’t have any mingalato (tricks). You need to understand that there’s no freedom of speech, then there’s no freedom of association and the ECZ does not operate independently”

“So if we don’t have those three, then really we cannot have an election that will be deemed as free and fair. So all these elections that we have had in the past, even the most recent ones, the Lumezi and Mfuwe, we noticed a lot of violence where people are not participating freely”.

“So that’s one of the strategies already that they are using. If people are not able to participate freely now in the by-elections, I wonder how we are going to have free and fair elections in the coming year, 2026,” Chisenga said.

“As we speak, truthfully, PF has been taken over by the UPND regime. That is a fact and they can’t run away from it. Anyone that gives an opposing view is sent to jail, it’s one of their tactics. But what is the role of the opposition? I’m not supposed to agree with you on any given situation”.

“If I see you going astray as a ruling party, I’m supposed to give a check and balance to you as a ruling party because that’s the reason it’s called a democratic state. Now what would the situation be if people are not able to speak? People are now scared to speak up because of the cyber laws. And I can assure you that some of these laws that they insist on will come and haunt them in future”.

She added that the UPND had also placed cadres at the helm of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and had stopped the opposition from holding rallies.

“So one of their strategies is to ensure that they place their people at the helm of the ECZ, people who are deemed as cadres, people who we know participated in the previous elections. We all know that these people are affiliated to the ECZ and to that extent, the ECZ is not independent, it’s not been independent for a while”.

“And if we are supposed to say that we are living in a democratic country, then we should allow the opposition to participate freely in politics. And in this case, I mean, we are not allowed to hold public rallies, how are we going to sell our message to the people without having conversations with them? And these conversations we need to have freely because we are a democratic state. So how are we going to engage our would-be voters in the coming elections if at all we don’t have the freedom to associate, the freedom to speak,” said Chisenga.

“We don’t even have an independent ECZ, a body which is responsible for the elections. And the election process is supposed to be [independent] so that all stakeholders and participants are able to engage. So for me, all this is part of their mingalatos. It’s been almost five years and the opposition, especially the Patriotic Front, which according to them is a threat, has not been allowed to associate freely”.

“If people are free to speak to their voters and the environment is also smooth, you can see that everyone is talking against this UPND government. The only way they wouldn’t be worried is because they have placed certain situations in place. The Registrar of Societies is guided with certain rules and regulations of how they should conduct themselves. But this time around, they are not able to do their job. You remember the former registrar of societies had to resign because of the environment in which she was working”.
