NPA ready for Constitutional Court battle as Magudumana eyes appeal

NPA ready for Constitutional Court battle as Magudumana eyes appeal

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it is fully prepared to face Dr Nandipha Magudumana in the Constitutional Court, should she take her fight for freedom to the country’s highest court.

This comes after the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) on May 16, 2025, dismissed her challenge against the legality of her 2023 deportation from Tanzania.

Magudumana has maintained that her deportation from Tanzania was unlawful and disguised extradition. However, the SCA upheld the Free State High Court’s earlier ruling that her return to South Africa was lawful, finding she had consented to the process. While the majority of the SCA bench supported this view, a dissenting opinion may provide her legal team with grounds for a further appeal.

NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga welcomed the ruling and reiterated the authority’s readiness to respond to any Constitutional Court challenge. “We remain confident in the legality of the deportation and are prepared to defend our case with the full force of our prosecutorial arsenal,” he said.

Magudumana’s legal representatives are currently studying the SCA judgment to determine their next steps. A Constitutional Court appeal, if lodged, could delay the high-profile trial scheduled from July 21 to September 19, 2025. She is set to appear alongside her partner, Thabo Bester, to face charges related to his dramatic 2022 escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre.

Mnangagwa’s son suggests ‘confidential’ investigation into Wicknell Chivayo payments

The Zimbabwean government, through the Deputy Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, David Mnangagwa has stressed the confidential nature of investigations into alleged irregular financial transactions, involving controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo.

This statement comes amidst mounting public scrutiny following reports detailing substantial fund transfers to Chivayo.

During a parliamentary session on Wednesday, Mnangagwa addressed inquiries regarding the “South African Financial Centre Report” and related allegations of irregular payments.

He clarified that information from intelligence units, such as the South African Intelligence Unit, is typically shared with the Zimbabwe Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) in confidence and is not subject to public disclosure.

“If they communicate with sister organisations, the South African Intelligence would communicate with the Zimbabwe Financial Intelligence Unit. This would be in confidence and such information would not even be for our consumption as ministers,” Mnangagwa stated.

“There will be no publications that come from an intelligence unit and any communication that can be purported to be in the public domain or not in the public domain cannot be verified because these are private communications.”

The Deputy Minister’s emphasis on the confidential nature of such investigations suggests that any ongoing probe by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and law enforcement agencies will likely proceed without public updates, at least in the initial stages.

This assertion of confidentiality follows reports from South African financial intelligence sources, which allege that over US$40 million of Zimbabwean taxpayer funds, intended for election materials, were transferred to companies associated with Chivayo.

The reports, detailed in leaked documents last month, indicate that the Zimbabwe Ministry of Finance and Economic Development paid substantial amounts to South African printing company Ren-Form CC for election supplies, with a significant portion of those funds subsequently moving to Chivayo’s companies.

The reports also detailed that the South African Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) flagged Ren-Form’s bank accounts for “rapid movement of funds to various parties” following the receipt of payments from the Zimbabwean treasury.

The FIC investigation raised concerns about potential money laundering, citing round amounts being transacted, luxury purchases, and transaction activity not in line with the profiling information of the account holder.

Ex-convict Chivayo has donated over US$15 million in cash and properties to Zanu-PF supporters and artists linked to his party.

While the full extent of his income sources remains unconfirmed, publicly available information indicates that he received more than US$40 million from a contract to supply election materials for the 2023 plebiscite.

Rihanna’s New Single ‘Friend Of Mine’ Drops On Friday

Rihanna has announced that her first single will arrive this Friday. The song titled Friend of Mine, her first major project in three years, was written as a soundtrack for the Smurfs movie.

The Umbrella hitmaker last released Lift Me Up in October 2022, which was recorded for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever movie.

The singer was seen entering a recording studio in New York City early this year, but it was not clear which project she was working on at the time.

Rihanna and her partner, A$AP Rocky, recently confirmed they are expecting their third child. An Instagram picture released by their photographer on Monday, May 5, shows the mother of two walking through the streets of New York with her baby bump in full view.

Responding to the development, ahead of the 2025 MET Gala, A$AP Rocky, stated: “It feels amazing…It’s time that we show the people what we were cooking up. And I’m glad everybody’s happy for us because we’re definitely happy.”

Rihanna stated in an interview last year that she wanted as many children as God wanted her to have. She noted, “I don’t know what God wants, but I would go for more than two. I would try for my girl. But of course if it’s another boy, it’s another boy.”

At the time, she said the decision to start a family with A$AP was not planned, but it turned out to be “the best thing that ever happened to us.”

In April this year, the singer attended a Fenty Beauty event in Paris, showing up in a baggy dress and other corresponding outfit, which prompted speculations that she was expecting a third child.

Here’s Why 50 Cent Thinks Diddy Should Have Taken a Plea Deal

If there’s anyone that has been keen and has not shied away from his opinion on Diddy ‘s court case, it is G-Unit crooner, 50 Cent.

The musician, who is known in real life as Curtis Jackson, has even gone ahead as executive producer of a docuseries about Sean “Diddy” Combs, a project 50 announced in December 2023.

Even though it is not yet available to watch on any platform and lacks a formal title, it is still being developed by G-Unit Films and Television Inc and will focus on the sexual assault and rape allegations against Combs, with proceeds benefiting the victims.

This is far from the first time 50 has shared his thoughts on the state of affairs surrounding Diddy.

During the opening day of Diddy’s trial, the prosecution’s first witness was a male sex worker named Daniel Philip, who claimed he was once asked to urinate on Cassie.

50 responded to this by uploading a picture of a fountain with water coming out of a boy’s penis with a caption: “Diddy, ‘In your mouth! SMH LOL.”

However, his latest submission comes in light of Cassie’s bombshell testimony in court.

Cassie’s testimony is giving followers of Diddy’s case a different perspective and opinions on Diddy’s alleged freak-offs.

As a result, 50 Cent thinks Diddy should have taken a plea deal after hearing Cassie‘s testimony in the ongoing sex trafficking trial.

This is because Diddy had previously been offered a plea deal in exchange for a lesser sentence, but he turned it down shortly before jury selection.

On Thursday, May 15, 50 the rapper hopped on his official Instagram to share a post on the ongoing criminal trial, which saw the disgraced mogul’s ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura taking the stand.

During her time on the stand, Ventura recounted horrid details about what allegedly transpired during her relationship with Diddy.

Clearly what she said swayed most followers and 50 Cent, who was equally shook by some of the things he heard.

“After listening to today’s testimony, I think the diddler should have taken the plea offer.” 50 Cent wrote. “The sh– they are saying is beyond me, so what do you think?”

Diddy’s Defense Says Cassie’s Text Messages Show She Was a Willing Participant, “I’m Always Ready”

Cassie, who is still testifying against Diddy for allegedly being sexually and physically abusive, once told Diddy she was eager to join “freak-offs,” according to messages presented during his trial. His legal team used the texts to argue that their sexual encounters were consensual throughout their relationship.

According to TMZ, during cross-examination, Diddy’s lawyers showed jurors several explicit messages Cassie sent between 2007 and 2009. In one message from August 2009, two years into their relationship, Cassie wrote, “I’m always ready to freak off, it can be whenever,” suggesting her willingness in their intimate encounters.

Cassie had earlier testified that her first freak-off happened when she was 22 and that it left her feeling “dirty and confused.” But Diddy’s defense highlighted her texts to suggest she was a willing participant at the time.

More texts read in court included Cassie saying, “I feel like I want to f,” followed by Diddy replying, “I’m so horny I can’t concentrate,” and Cassie responding, “I’ll go to Duane Reade for candles and then set up the room.” In another message, she wrote, “Can’t wait for you to d tease my p**** raw.”

Diddy’s lawyer, Anna Estevao, also asked Cassie if Diddy taught her how to perform oral sex. Cassie replied, “He did.” When asked to read a 2007 message aloud, she laughed and let Estevao read it instead. It said, “I feel protected, you are sweet.”

Cassie also confirmed that Diddy first kissed her during her 21st birthday party in Las Vegas, where stars like Britney Spears and Dallas Austin were in attendance.

The court continues to review their past communications as part of the ongoing case against Diddy.

Michael Jordan Officially Joins NBC Sports, Becomes NBA Commentator

Michael Jordan will return to the NBA spotlight as a special contributor for NBC Sports starting in the 2025–26 season. This will be his first time as an NBA commentator since retiring in 2003, coinciding with NBC’s big comeback to NBA broadcasting after 23 years.

NBC recently signed an 11-year, $76 billion deal with the NBA. The network plans to air up to 100 regular-season games each year and will relaunch “Sunday Night Basketball” in 2026. NBC is also bringing back the popular “Roundball Rock” theme song from the 1990s.

According to WBLS, Jordan will join a new broadcast team that includes Mike Tirico and Noah Eagle as play-by-play announcers, with Jamal Crawford, Reggie Miller, and Carmelo Anthony serving as analysts.

Since selling his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets in 2023, Jordan has remained largely out of the spotlight. His return to the screen is expected to boost viewership, given his strong legacy and deep understanding of the game.

Fans are eager to see Jordan take on this new role. With NBC reviving its classic NBA coverage, his presence adds star power and fresh perspective to the upcoming 2025-26 season.

Justin Bieber Finally Breaks His Silence on Whether He Was Among Diddy’s Victims

Justin Bieber has officially broken his silence amid the ongoing federal sex trafficking trial involving Sean “Diddy” Combs. The 31-year-old pop star, known for hits like “Peaches” and “Love Yourself,” had remained publicly quiet about the controversy until now. Through a spokesperson, Bieber clarified that he is not one of Combs’ victims but acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations.

The statement, released to People, directly addresses speculation that has surrounded Bieber’s past relationship with the music mogul. “Although Justin is not among Sean Combs’ victims, there are individuals who were genuinely harmed by him,” the rep stated. “Shifting focus away from this reality detracts from the justice these victims rightfully deserve.”

Combs, founder of Bad Boy Records, is currently facing charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and facilitating prostitution. The trial began on Monday, May 12, following a September indictment. The music producer has pleaded not guilty. The case has reignited conversations about celebrity power and abuse, with multiple women stepping forward with accusations against Combs.

In September, just after Combs’ arrest, a source close to Bieber told People that the singer was focused on his family. At the time, he and wife Hailey Baldwin Bieber had just welcomed their son, Jack Blues. “He’s aware of Diddy’s arrest and all the allegations,” the source noted. “It’s not anything that he wants to focus on, though.”

However, Bieber’s name resurfaced earlier in the controversy when a 2009 YouTube clip began circulating. The video showed a then-15-year-old Bieber spending a weekend with Combs, who at one point discussed getting “some girls” and boasted about giving the teen his Lamborghini and mansion. In the clip, Combs tells viewers, “Where we’re hanging out and what we’re doing we can’t really disclose,” adding that they were “going to go full. Buck full crazy.”

The resurfacing of the video has fueled public concern and scrutiny over Bieber’s early relationship with the older music executive. While the singer’s new statement distances himself from Combs’ alleged crimes, it also affirms the need to center the voices of the actual victims. As Combs’ trial unfolds, figures from his past continue to be drawn into the spotlight—voluntarily or not.

Cassie Testifies She Doesn’t Hate Diddy Now, Has ‘Love for the Past’

Cassie Ventura took the stand again on Friday in the federal sex trafficking trial against Sean “Diddy” Combs and made it clear she holds no hatred toward her former partner, despite the serious allegations she’s made. During cross-examination, Diddy’s defense attorney, Anna Estevao, asked her directly whether she hated the music mogul. Cassie calmly responded, “I don’t hate him,” before adding that she still has “love for the past and what it was.”

TMZ reports that the exchange stood out as one of the few moments in which Ventura spoke about her current emotional state regarding Combs, with most of her nearly two-day testimony focused on the details of her harrowing allegations. Cassie previously filed a civil lawsuit against Combs in 2023, which was settled out of court just one day after it was filed. However, the federal government later brought forward criminal charges, leading to the current trial.

In her testimony, Ventura accused Combs of years of abuse, including rape, forced drug use, and being coerced into sex with male prostitutes while Combs watched. She alleges that the abuse began when she was just 19 years old and signed to his Bad Boy Records label. One of the most chilling moments she recalled was after their breakup dinner in 2018, when she says Diddy drove her home, entered her apartment uninvited, and raped her on the living room floor.

The defense has tried to poke holes in her credibility, focusing on inconsistencies and pressing her about why she maintained a relationship with Combs for so many years. They also questioned her about a supposed “closure” conversation she had with Combs following their breakup. Estevao used that line of questioning to ask whether Cassie still had emotional ties to her former partner, which led to Cassie’s statement about loving the past.

Despite the deeply traumatic events she described, Ventura remained composed on the stand. Her willingness to acknowledge that she still holds some affection for their shared history, while simultaneously detailing years of alleged psychological and physical abuse, presented a complicated emotional portrait to the jury.

Combs is currently facing charges that include sex trafficking, racketeering, and transporting individuals across state lines for illegal sexual activity. Prosecutors allege that he ran a decades-long criminal enterprise using his fame, wealth, and influence to control and exploit young women. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The trial, which began earlier this month, is expected to continue for several more weeks, with more witnesses scheduled to testify.

Actor Denzel Washington Reportedly Confronted Diddy at One of His Parties

In a resurfaced story from 2003, Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington allegedly confronted Sean “Diddy” Combs at one of his notorious parties, stirring fresh discussion about the music mogul’s behavior over the years. According to US Weekly, Washington and his wife Pauletta were in attendance at an all-night gathering hosted by Diddy when an altercation occurred. Sources claim Washington was so angered that he stormed out after accusing Diddy of showing disrespect. According to an anonymous source, Washington shouted, “You don’t respect anyone,” before leaving the party in the early morning hours.

While details about what exactly triggered the actor’s reaction remain vague, the incident has gained new attention in light of Diddy’s recent legal troubles. These legal issues have renewed public interest in Diddy’s past controversies. Last month, Diddy was arrested and charged with sex trafficking and racketeering, with allegations surrounding his orchestration of controversial “freak off” parties, which reportedly involved non-consensual acts and drug use. The connection between the 2003 incident with Washington and Diddy’s current legal troubles remains unclear, but it has added another layer to the scrutiny surrounding the music icon’s past behavior.

Over the years, several celebrities have hinted at the questionable nature of Diddy’s parties. Ashton Kutcher, for instance, once remarked, “I’ve got a lot I can’t tell,” when asked about Diddy’s gatherings. Meanwhile, other reports suggest that stars like Jay-Z and Beyoncé have distanced themselves from the mogul due to concerns about his infamous events. Despite the rumors, Diddy has frequently downplayed the controversies, even joking in a 1999 interview, “They’re going to probably be arresting me… just because we want to have a good time.”

As Diddy awaits trial for the charges against him, his legal team has firmly denied all accusations, calling the claims “false and defamatory.” They maintain that Diddy is innocent, and he remains in custody while his case progresses.

Though Washington and Diddy have remained silent about their 2003 confrontation, the resurfaced story serves as a reminder of the tensions that have surrounded Diddy’s reputation for decades. As more details emerge, both the entertainment world and the public continue to examine Diddy’s legacy with increasing scrutiny.

Trump’s Middle East envoy with no diplomatic experience turns to Netflix and vibes

President Donald Trump’s pick for Special Envoy to the Middle East has no formal experience in international relations nor background in diplomacy, and as such is “leaning heavily on intuition,” his record of striking business deals, and even resorting to Netflix documentaries to supplement his knowledge about global conflicts.

That’s according to a new report in The Atlantic, which called real estate investor Steve Witkoff Trump’s “real secretary of State.”

Witkoff, 68, best known as the founder of the Witkoff Group, now serves as a U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East and played a role in diplomatic efforts related to Ukraine.

Atlantic staff writer Isaac Stanley-Becker noted that Witkoff has seen a meteoric rise in recent months, going from a relative unknown on the world stage to now “eat[ing] into the duties” of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

But it hasn’t come easy.

“Witkoff has faced a precipitous learning curve, though he seems largely unbothered by the long history of American diplomatic failure in the Middle East, in particular,” the report said.

Witkoff doesn’t see Ayatollah Khamenei or Vladimir Putin as “cruelly Machiavellian authoritarians,” the report said, but rather “clever negotiators.”

Trump’s pal has faced high-level negotiations despite having a light track record in foreign affairs, according to the report.

“Witkoff has no formal background in international relations. Nor does he have training or experience as a diplomat. To strike deals on matters as varied and complicated as the Russia-Ukraine war and the Iranian nuclear program, he is leaning heavily on intuition, his record of success in real-estate negotiations, and his personal friendship with the president,” the report said.

He’s also utilized streaming services to help bolster his knowledge of worldly affairs.

“In recent months, he told me, he has read many books and watched Netflix documentaries on world conflicts (including Turning Point: The Vietnam War). He’s come to believe, as Trump did with politics, that he can turn a lack of expertise to his advantage and succeed where the professionals have failed,” wrote Stanley-Becker.

The White House backed Witkoff, telling The Daily Beast in a statement that he’s a “trusted friend of President Trump, and he left behind a massive business enterprise to serve our country as a Special Envoy.”

“The President is incredibly proud of all Mr. Witkoff has accomplished to help restore peace through strength, and he will continue to leverage Mr. Witkoff’s talents to advance his America First foreign policy vision,” the White House said.

Trump claims presidential immunity in Truth Social lawsuit

President Donald Trump is trying to dodge a lawsuit from the co-founders of his Truth Social platform by claiming presidential immunity, according to a new report in Bloomberg.

Lawyers for the president on Thursday told a Delaware judge that the case against Trump, brought by Andy Litinsky and Wes Moss, two former contestants on “The Apprentice” who helped launch the platform, should be dismissed or paused because his duties as president shield him from civil litigation.

Litinsky and Moss alleged Trump tried to unfairly dilute their 8.6% stake in the MAGA-friendly social media platform and squeeze them out of its initial public offering, according to Bloomberg. They called Trump’s claim of immunity an attempt to “obfuscate and delay” the case, the publication added.

“Trump is actively litigating claims as a plaintiff in state and federal court without raising presidential immunity,” the attorneys argued before Delaware Chancery Court Judge Lori. “He should not be permitted to use this (non-existent) immunity as both a sword and a shield.”

But Trump’s lawyers arrived ready to battle.

“Delaware should not open the door” to letting Trump’s political opponents tie him up in state-court lawsuits, one of Trump’s attorneys, John Reed, argued, as reported by Bloomberg. He pointed out that Trump has been named in 14 lawsuits personally during just the first five months of his second term.

Trump has vowed not to sell his 60% stake in the company, which plunged in value after going public but surged again after his election victory. The lawsuit also names as defendants Donald Trump Jr., FBI Director Kash Patel and former Rep. Devin Nunes, all Truth Social directors.

Republican lawmaker blasts Marjorie Taylor Greene as ‘replaceable’ amid GOP civil war

One of the Republican House majority’s most vulnerable members called out Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) in an escalating civil war.

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) has been insisting on substantially raising the deduction on so-called SALT taxes – state and local taxes – as Republicans try to pass the “big, beautiful bill” sought by president Donald Trump, and debate on the issue has pitted swing-state GOP lawmakers who represent wealthier areas against rural Republicans who represent less affluent rural districts, reported Politico.

“They have a very myopic view of New York and California,” said Lawler, when asked about his red-state colleagues.

Lawler represents a district outside New York City with median income of $119,000, which is basically double the median income of $60,000 in the Missouri district represented by Ways and Means Committee chairman Jason Smith, whose opposition to raising the SALT deduction from $10,000 to $30,000 has “exposed the raw class fissures in the House GOP,” according to Politico’s Jonathan Martin.

“In the districts that determine the control of Congress — because there’s really only about 35 districts that are actually competitive — the fact is that it’s districts like mine that determine that outcome,” Lawler told Martin.

Lawler noted that House speaker Mike Johnson, who represents rural north Louisiana, seems to have a better understanding of districts like his than some other members, but he said Smith and other red-state lawmakers don’t understand what his constituents want or need.

“No, I don’t think Jason does, frankly,” said Lawler, adding that Smith boasts “about how he has the lowest SALT district in the country.”

Lawler said the president, who spent most of his life in New York City, has assured him that he agrees with lifting the SALT cap, but he escalated his public feud with Trump ally Marjorie Taylor Greene, whom he had mocked this week as the “Jewish space laser lady” after she said the deduction he’s seeking would mostly benefit wealthy Americans.

“The fact is somebody like Marjorie Taylor Greene is replaceable,” he said. “We will win her seat without a problem if she’s not the candidate. In seats like mine, that’s not the case, and so when she says stupid things like, ‘We don’t need RINOs,’ really? You have no ability to deliver on the president’s agenda if you don’t hold these seats.”

The New Yorker said southern Republicans like Greene need allies from coastal blue states to keep their majority.

“Unlike in 2017, where the Republicans had a big majority that could allow them to disregard the opinions of people like me and pass a bill that capped SALT at $10,000, they can’t do that this time,” Lawler said.

Trump panics with overnight rant about ‘sleazebags’ manipulating Supreme Court

It took a while, but Donald Trump finally weighed in on the Supreme Court holding a hearing on his opposition to birthright citizenship and how it is applied, and he does not appear to be pleased with what occurred.

In a frantic rant posted from overseas to Truth Social in the middle of the night, he fretted that the nation’s highest court is being manipulated.

Before the court convened on Thursday, he wrote in part, “Big case today in the United States Supreme Court. Birthright Citizenship was not meant for people taking vacations to become permanent Citizens of the United States of America, and bringing their families with them, all the time laughing at the ‘SUCKERS’ that we are! The United States of America is the only Country in the World that does this, for what reason, nobody knows — But the drug cartels love it! We are, for the sake of being politically correct, a STUPID Country but, in actuality, this is the exact opposite of being politically correct, and it is yet another point that leads to the dysfunction of America.”

With some doubt being cast now that judges like his own judicial appointee Amy Coney Barrett seemed inclined to rule against him, he lashed out on his social media platform.

“The Radical Left SleazeBags, which has no cards remaining in its illegal bag of tricks, is, in a very coordinated manner, PLAYING THE REF with regard to the United States Supreme Court,” he fumed. “They lost the Election in a landslide, and with it, have totally lost their confidence and reason. They are stone cold CRAZY! I hope the Supreme Court doesn’t fall for the games they play. The people are with us in bigger numbers than ever before. They want to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

President Hakainde Hichilema will win the 2026 elections- Amos Chanda

Hichilema Headed for 2026 Victory as Opposition Runs on Empty Political Rhetoric!

Amos Chanda says Zambia should expect the incumbent’s re-election – not for his perfection, but because the opposition lacks a compelling, development-based alternative.

By Mpandashalo Mwewa.

Lusaka, May 17 – Former presidential press aide Amos Chanda has weighed in on the 2026 political race, asserting that President Hakainde Hichilema is poised for re-election – not necessarily because of an unblemished record, but because the opposition has failed to articulate a credible alternative anchored in development.

And this has been my debate. Politics should not be a self preservation tool but a vehicle for development. What development alternatives are we hearing from the current opposition?

Speaking on Diamond TV, Chanda questioned who among the opposition ranks could realistically unseat the President, pointing out that criticism alone cannot translate into votes.

“You cannot defeat an incumbent merely by being loud. You must offer a vision that resonates with the people’s hunger for development,” Chanda said, implying that the opposition’s message remains hollow and reactionary.

He also touched on his recent acquittal, denying it was influenced by politics, and used the platform to underscore the importance of issue-based politics rather than personality clashes or conspiracy rhetoric.

Chanda’s remarks signal a broader challenge within Zambia’s political opposition: the struggle to present a unifying, development-driven agenda that can compete with the incumbent’s narrative.

With elections on the horizon, the question isn’t just about President Hichilema’s popularity – it’s about whether the opposition has anything new or transformative to say.

The gradual navigation by HH towards China  remotely detonated the warning shots at the US embassy- Wynter Kabimba

By Wynter Kabimba

The Other Side of the Coin

On Wednesday 07 May, 2025, the United States of America ambassador to Zambia Mr. Gonzalez walked the unusual lane and held a press conference in Lusaka at which he revealed his government’s decision to stop the sum of US$50 million aid to Zambia’s health sector. On its face value the explanation was most convincing. How can a poor country abuse the philanthropic gesture of a rich friendly nation?

The ambassador cited the systemic pilfering and theft of drugs and vaccines purchased out of US money to the sector and the lack of action on the part of the UPND government to control this growing criminality and hold those responsible to account. The diplomat, however, decided to act beyond just words. He broke down in sympathy with the indigent and vulnerable, the main

beneficiaries of his country’s aid. This was no doubt dramatic, a diplomat exhibiting more empathy for the poor than the elected representatives of the people. It was jaw-dropping.

The Minister of Health in a press release delivered his rebuttal on 08 May, 2025. His statement was comprehensive. He highlighted the inaccuracies in the ambassador’s allegations. A few other people corroborated Elijah Muchima’s version. President Hakainde Hichilema weighed in and promised the arrest of those responsible. It was now a he-said, she-said game. But where does the truth lie in all this? It is hidden on the flip side of the coin.

The President’s response to the ambassador’s protest decision by his government was normal if your country’s neon-colonial history is one of going round the Western capitals and the US, bowl-in-hand with a plea for handouts at the beck and call of those who think they should dictate

how you should run the affairs of state of your country while wearing an epaulette of a sovereign nation.

The consequences have been obvious. Post-colonial history is witness to the fact that those who give can decide to blow the whistle at any time to show you the direction you should take and when you should do so. They can choose the voters for you and how long you will remain in power. They can also dictate your friends and who should not be, not for the reasons your friends are not of good morals or pervasive but only because they do not submit to them. To keep you on their side they will make you grow a fetishisism for loans and what they call grants. They are presented as subtle gifts.

In the last one month, President Hichilema has met at least three delegations of Chinese investors who have promised him massive investments in the energy sector, an albatross to the UPND’s fortunes in the 2026 general election. The Chinese are practical and less beanocratic, both values

which appeal to HH as a corporate creature. The man is forward leaning and upbeat to ensure that he turns round the energy sector in the remaining months of his first term.

But President Hichilema has failed to understand the obsession and level of US antipathy towards China. China is a word they utter with a lump in the throat. Any form of association with China, however beneficial it may be to the Zambian people is nothing but anathema and a sacrilege. It is Henry Kissinger former US secretary of State who said, “To be a friend to America is dangerous but to be an enemy is fatal.” This was way before China rose from its slumber to become an economic powerhouse it is today.

It is this apparent gradual navigation by HH towards China which remotely detonated the warning shots at the US embassy. However, because the underlying reasons are politically immoral, the US ambassador had to find a veiled explanation to express his government’s consternation.

5
This is not about theft of drugs, NO. The US has lost more money than US$50 million with user-friendly regimes who have not attempted to switch friends and walk away from them without raising a red flag.

There is a lesson in all this, one which is not only for HH but us all as a people. The legendary teaching is in the Trojan Horse depicted in the downfall and regime change of the city of Troy in the 12th Century BC: “Beware Greeks bearing gifts.”

YES, LEADERSHIP IS HARD,  CONSULT ECL FOR IDEAS -MUNDUBILE TELLS HICHILEMA

YES, LEADERSHIP IS HARD,  CONSULT ECL FOR IDEAS – HON MUNDUBILE TELLS HICHILEMA.

……..says Zambians will remember HH for the High Cost of Living.

Lusaka…………17th MAY, 2025 (Smart Eagles)

Tonse Alliance Parliamentary Affairs Chairperson Hon Brian Mundubile says President Hakainde Hichilema’s admission that leadership is not easy is an acknowledgment of the UPND Government’s failures.

Hon Mundubile said there has been failures in the agriculture sector, failures in the health sector, economy and Mining Sector.

Hon Mundubile said one can imagine coming to admit that leadership is not easy when there has been no appreciable progress made in the mentioned sectors.

He was speaking at a Press Briefing in Lusaka today.

He said it would be ideal for President Hichilema to apologise to the Zambian people especially to his Predecessor Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

He said President Hichilema is now wondering how President Lungu managed to do massive works during his tenure.

He stated that President Hichilema must consult President Lungu to get one or two ideas on effective leadership.

Hon Mundubile who is also Mporokoso Member of Parliament said the UPND have been struggling to even implement projects under their flagship CDF Programme which is a failure.

“President Hichilema is now wondering how President Lungu managed to do the 400KM township roads on the copperbelt. He is wondering how ECL managed to do Lusaka 400 and the decongestion programme that brought in the flyover bridges and other roads. He is now wondering that Lungu was able to construct three big airports in Lusaka, Ndola and Livingstone.

He is amazed that President Lungu managed to do a bridge of close to 300 million dollars, the Kazungula Bridge, the Kafue Gorge lower 80 percent, the Kafulafuta Dam 84 percent, Kasama airport and all these.  President Hichilema is saying how on earth did the PF manage to do all these things,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hon Mundubile  urged President Hichilema to own up to his mistakes and acknowledge that he did not understand the assignment of being a leader.

He said when he was promising to reducing mealie meal to K50, he did not understand the assignment completely.

“Promises concerning the dollar, loadshedding and infrastructure projects, he did not understand the assignment completely. When they were giving away mopani for free, he did not understand the assignment completely. The assignment was that the Zambian Government repossess some of these mines so that we can be able to maximise what we are getting from the mining sector but he came in and gave out the mine free of charge.

Him and comrade Situmbeko Musokotwane, did not understand that the cost of fuel was dependant on two fundamentals, exchange rates and International oil price.    By Giving away those concessions that they gave, giving these mines, reducing mineral royalty tax from six percent to 3 % and making it deductible that would reduce revenue to the treasury in terms of dollars, this was going to increase the exchange rates and eventually have an impact on the cost of fuel,” Hon Mundubile stated.

He said four years down the line, there is absolutely nothing to remember the president for.
The Mporokoso lawmaker clearly states that the only thing the Zambians would remember the President Hichilema for is the high cost of living.

“We are going to speak for the Zambian people. Of we are allowed to speak, that is the only way the UPND government will ensure that there is medicine in the hospitals. That is the only way they will stop exporting maize.  We as members of Parliament under tonse, we want to make this pledge that we shall not stop speaking on behalf of the Zambian people,” he said.

HON MABONGA, A VICTIM OF A UPND CAMPAIGN TO DESTROY OPPOSITION- HON CHISANGA

HON MABONGA, A VICTIM OF A UPND CAMPAIGN TO DESTROY OPPOSITION- HON CHISANGA

………..says her Jailing is a clear example of lynching dissenting voices.

Lusaka………….17th May, 2025 (Smart Eagles)

Lukashya Member of Parliament Hon George Chisanga has condemned the Jailing of Mfuwe Member of Parliament Maureen Mabonga describing it as a dark day for Constitutional democracy.

Hon Mabonga was sentenced to 8 months imprisonment for alleged Seditious Practices.

Speaking at a Media briefing in Lusaka today,  Hon Chisanga said what the country saw yesterday was not justice but a systematic lynching of descending voices.

He said Hon Mobonga is an innocent Victim by a wider campaign of the UPND to destroy the opposition while stamping its authority in the nation to create a defacto one party state.

Hon Chisanga is of the view that the timing of the sentencing amid constitutional amendment discussions, is aimed at skewing the debate in favor of the UPND because numbers for opposition begin to reduce.

He said the UPND want to push for Constitutional Amendments despite majority of the Stakeholders saying no to this hasty process.

“The opposition cannot divorce the jailing of Mabonga and Munir Zulu to this arrangement in making sure that they reduce capacity of the opposition to oppose the constitutional amendment process.

We are surprised that for a country that is limping economically, we can be so irresponsibly allow people to lose their positions as MPs and instigate  by elections. The case of Emmanuel Jay Banda is another perfect example where his alleged abductors have never been called for questioning.  The words used by Hon Mabonga if anybody subjected them, the words could not possibly be considered seditious. It was more surprising when the magistrate wanted to draw a comparison what Ms Mabonga said and the genòcide in Rwanda,” he said.

Hon Chisanga said it is clear that the UPND has proceeded with speed on it’s part of National distruction because the majority of the Citizens have sat back.

“At the rate the country is moving, many of the opposition who wish to exercise their rights, guaranteed for Citizens by the constitution will end up being jailed by this authoritative regime.  The country faces a leadership that has quickly transformed into an authoritative regime,” he said.

The nation is aware that Hon. Mabonga joins a long queue of opposition leaders who have been victims of injustice since the UPND came into power. It is a very clear fact that Hon Mabonga was merely responding to a provocative statement that has become an order of the day by the UPND officials and cadres targeting the PF. Nothing has happened to the UPND officials who have been reported for various offences but have not been arrested,” he said.

And Hon Chisanga said the UPND have lost the moral right to rule the country as they have destroyed just about everything that exists in Zambia.

“It is time for Zambians to make a decision in 2026. Our call is to provide leadership in the opposition. We have the opportunity to redesign opposition politics.

We as members of Parliament for the PF we have to call the opposition to Unity. We need to restore the nation to its past glory. What we are going through is Gangsterism. We have replaced the Constitution and rule of law by the rule of savages,” Hon Chisanga explained.

PF Deputy SG Brenda Nyirenda Condemns Incarceration of MPs, Calls for National Reflection

PF Deputy SG Brenda Nyirenda Condemns Incarceration of MPs, Calls for National Reflection

Lusaka, 17 May 2025

Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy Secretary General and Member of Parliament for Lundazi, Hon. Brenda Nyirenda, has strongly condemned the incarceration of opposition Members of Parliament, describing the move as a wasteful and insensitive decision that undermines democracy and disregards national priorities.

Speaking this morning when Patriotic Front Members of Parliament held a press briefing,  Hon. Nyirenda questioned the logic of arresting and jailing elected representatives with just 11 months left before the dissolution of Parliament ahead of the 2026 general elections.

“We are now spending colossal sums of money on by-elections when, in a few months, these seats would be up for contest again. What leader chooses to buy a Mercedes-Benz when there is no food at home? It’s about priorities and leadership with heart,” she stated.

Hon. Nyirenda also stated that the current administration of misusing state power to silence dissent while pretending to push an agenda of youth and women inclusion.

“How do you talk about inclusion when you’re jailing the very people young leaders and women you claim to be uplifting? It’s a contradiction that must be called out,” she said.

Citing the case of Hon. Maureen Mabonga, a young female MP and mother of a two-year-old child, Nyirenda described her incarceration as inhumane and unjust.

“As a woman, I feel the pain. Maureen should be nurturing her child. Where is the compassion? Where is the leadership?” she asked.

The PF Deputy SG further criticized the judiciary, accusing it of failing to advise the executive against politically motivated prosecutions in an election year. She called for wisdom and restraint, urging national leaders to focus on saving resources and uniting the country rather than deepening divisions.

“Even within the ruling party, there have been leaders who refused to support the incarceration of opposition MPs. They saw the bigger picture. Why can’t that wisdom prevail now?” she said.

Hon. Nyirenda ended her address by expressing hope that Zambians will soon come to fully appreciate the values and leadership the Patriotic Front stood for.

“Sometimes people must see the opposite of good leadership to understand what they lost. I believe many households today are quietly saying, ‘We are sorry we removed the Patriotic Front.’”

WE SHALL SPEAK THROUGH YOU, MR PRESIDENT – TONSE NATIONAL YOUTH CHAIRPERSON

WE SHALL SPEAK THROUGH YOU, MR PRESIDENT – TONSE NATIONAL YOUTH CHAIRPERSON

…as youth have spoken. The countdown has begun. And they vow to speak through the very voice of the President himself…

17th May, 2025 | Lusaka

Celestine Mukandila, National Youth Chairperson of the Tonse Alliance, has delivered a blistering critique of President Hakainde Hichilema and his administration, accusing them of betrayal, economic sabotage, and mocking the suffering of Zambians.

Speaking this morning when he joined PF Members of Parliament, Mukandila declared:

“Mr. President, the time is up. If I were you today, I would resign on moral grounds!”

The youth leader cataloged a litany of grievances against the government from soaring mealie meal and fuel prices to unprecedented corruption and theft of public resources. He accused the President of being “out of touch with the reality on the ground”, highlighting that State House and those around it were “feeding on taxpayer money” while ordinary citizens suffered.

“Come down to the ground. People are hungry. The youth are unemployed. Medicines are missing. Corruption is thriving,” Mukandila thundered.

He further revealed that some UPND members, opposition MPs, and even ruling party structures have quietly aligned with the Tonse Alliance, united in their resolve to use the system to “make the money and still vote you out.”

Mukandila went on to warn that the youth will not forget the promises made, and that digital platforms will now be used as tools of accountability:

“We shall reproduce every video and every promise ever made. We shall speak to you, Mr. President. We shall speak through you. We will remind the Zambian people of everything you said because you are now the only model of communication left between the people and power.”

He also took aim at recent public displays of cash handouts by ruling party officials, condemning the conduct as not only irresponsible but dangerous:

“Do not be frustrated by these actions of doom, so-called the guaranteed future. Let’s go out there and vote. Let’s go and obtain those voters with national registration cards. Let’s ensure that what we have agreed on as the March of Quarters proceeds.”

“These coins have become so golden now that they can go into Livingstone and start throwing thin quarters. And they have continued to mock the poor people. A death occurred in Livingstone because they started throwing money.”

Mukandila emphasized that the money being used in such campaigns is not a benevolent offering, but public funds meant for development:

“That is our money. It is taxpayers’ money.”

He strongly condemned the Cybersecurity Act, branding it as a tool designed to silence dissent and warned that Zambian youth would not be silenced:

“Zambia is a constitutional democracy. This constitution was given to us by the people not the government. We will protect it at all cost.”

As discontent among young voters grows louder, Mukandila’s address has intensified national debate. The sile Ince from State House has only deepened speculation of panic within ruling circles.

JUSTICE MINISTER OPTIMISTIC ABOUT SUCCESS OF EMBATTLED CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT BILL

By Chamuka Shalubala

Justice Minister Princess Kasune has expressed optimism that the proposed constitution amendment bill will be gazetted by may 21st, 2025 toward enactment.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Ms. Kasune says the drafting process for the bill is already underway and progressing well.

She is confident that the bill will not be rejected once it is tabled in parliament, noting that since the government announced its intention to amend the constitution, various stakeholders have expressed strong support, especially due to its emphasis on inclusivity.

Ms. Kasune has further described as shameful that Zambia, a country known for peaceful transitions of power, has yet to implement a quota system for women.

She adds that it is disappointing that less stable nations have achieved higher levels of women and youth representation in decision-making positions than Zambia, despite its political stability.

ZAMBIA SIGNS JOINT VENTURE WITH INDIAN COMPANY START PRODUCING MEDICINES LOCALLY

ZAMBIA SIGNS JOINT VENTURE WITH INDIAN COMPANY START PRODUCING MEDICINES LOCALLY

PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SATURDAY, MAY 17, 2025

NEW DELHI: The Government has signed a Joint Venture (JV) with one of Indian’s largest pharmaceutical companies, Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited, to set up a manufacturing plant and start the production of about 150 drugs locally.

The deal was concluded on Thursday by a high-powered delegation led by Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet – Finance and Economic Development Dr. Siazongo Siakalenge which also included Ministry of Justice Permanent Secretary – Legal, Ms. Mwenya Bwalya, and Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary – Technical Services, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, among others.

Following the agreement, a groundbreaking ceremony to be officiated by President Hakainde Hichilema is earmarked for September this year while the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), which was represented by its Director General, Mr. Albert Halwampa, together with the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA), which was represented by Acting Director General, Dr. John Kachimba, have been tasked to facilitate other processes including registration.

Speaking after the signing of the Joint Venture Agreement, Dr. Siakalenge said the Zambian Government was grateful to Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited for supporting its efforts of ensuring a steady supply of essential medicines in Zambia.

“Under this agreement, Akums will localize the production of drugs and medicines. Akums is world class and currently has 13 facilities supplying over 60 countries and employing over 15, 000 people. They are coming to Zambia to put up the 14th plant, the first of its kind outside India. Once that happens, Zambia will no longer be required to import drugs.

“According to the agreement that has been signed today, close to 150 different products will be produced in Zambia, making us almost self-sufficient in the acquisition of such drugs and medicines locally. We are looking forward to a day when Akums comes to Zambia to participate in the ground breaking ceremony within the month of September this year. That will be a great day for all of us. We have been engaged in the discussions with Akums in the last two years and today, all those negotiations have been successfully concluded,” Dr. Siakalenge said.

And Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited President – International Business, Mr. Ashok Saroha, said setting up the first pharmaceutical manufacturing plant outside India would be the first step towards turning his company into a global manufacturer.

Mr. Saroha said his company is ready to make Zambia self-reliant in all essential medicines and drugs.

“For us, this is a very special moment when we have concluded our discussions for setting up a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Zambia. This will be a special manufacturing facility because all of us have worked very hard in this direction to make this happen. It will be a special facility because it is going to be our first facility outside India. Since we started this discussion with you two years ago, our management has been looking towards moving out of India.

“We look forward to a date when we will land in Zambia and participate in this groundbreaking ceremony. We want to see such kinds of countries becoming self-reliant in terms of fulfilling their needs for essential medicines. This is beyond commerce,” Mr. Saroha said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Lishimpi, who signed on behalf of the Zambian Government, said reaching an agreement on the Joint Venture was a big milestone and a game changer in the supply of medicines in Zambia.

“It is a big milestone for us and we are really grateful to Akums giving us this opportunity to change the scenario back home to make affordable, efficacious, and quality medicines available for our Zambians,” Dr. Lishimpi said.

HH PROPOSES ZAMBIA-NAMIBIA OIL PIPELINE

By Joy Nyambe

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA says there is need to build an oil pipeline between ZAMBIA and NAMIBIA.

President HICHILEMA said this when he hosted a Luncheon at State House in honour of visiting Namibian President, Dr. NETUMBO NANDI-NDAITWAH.

The two leaders shared outcomes of their bilateral talks earlier, stressing the need for continued friendly relations and strengthened cooperation between Zambia and Namibia.

President HICHILEMA said Zambians can invest in the oil sector in Namibia, thereby helping lower the price of fuel to reduce the cost of doing business.

The President also underscored the importance of infrastructure development in the two countries, to further deepen relations.

He is grateful that President NDAITWAH chose Zambia as one of her first countries to visit since assuming to the presidency following her victory in elections held in November last year.

Dr. NANDI-NDAITWAH said the two leaders will ensure they create a conducive environment for the economies of both countries to grow.

She also recalled living in Lusaka during her country’s independence struggle, saying Zambia is her second home.

The two leaders both proposed a toast to peace, prosperity and well being of the people of Namibia and Zambia.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has once again demonstrated its commitment to inclusive development, as Finance and National Planning Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane officially handed over 21 community projects in Liuwa Constituency under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Dr. Musokotwane, who also serves as the area Member of Parliament, toured several wards in Kalabo District, Western Province, where he commissioned key infrastructure meant to uplift the lives of the people.

Among the highlights of the tour was the handover of a truck and a newly constructed 1×2 classroom block at Mulinga Primary School in Sishekanu Ward. He also announced an ambitious road development plan aimed at gravelling the road from Luanginga River Bridge to Lukena in Lukulundundu Ward. A new access bridge will also be built to link Mulinga, Sishekanu, Mishulundu, and nearby areas—projects whose funding has already been secured.

“This is what UPND means by taking development to the grassroots,” said Dr. Musokotwane. “We are using the CDF to transform rural areas—where development was neglected for far too long.”

District Commissioner Musangu Njamba praised the initiative, noting that the upgraded roads will improve access to markets, schools, and health services, and serve as a backbone for economic growth in the area.

The 21 commissioned projects include:

One 1×2 classroom block at Mulinga

Two water schemes at Luoke and Salunda

A Hino Truck for constituency operations

Additional staff housing in various schools

Dr. Musokotwane called on the people of Liuwa to guard the new infrastructure jealously and work with the government to ensure long-term sustainability.

GBM’S DAUGHTER SHOT IN CHALALA: LONE GUNMAN AMBUSHES MUSAMA MWAMBA IN LILAYI

GBM’S DAUGHTER SHOT IN CHALALA: LONE GUNMAN AMBUSHES MUSAMA MWAMBA IN LILAYI

The FOX Newspaper

LUSAKA | May 17, 2025 — The Zambia Police Service has confirmed a shooting incident involving Ms. Musama Mwamba, the 37-year-old daughter of prominent politician and businessman Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM), who was shot in the arm by an unidentified assailant on Friday night in Chalala – Lilayi, Lusaka.

According to police, the incident occurred around 21:30 hours on May 16, 2025, as Ms. Mwamba was driving her grey Nissan Patrol (Reg. BAT 1887) from Central Mall to pick up her housemate, Ms. Josephine Nalungwe, at the residence of Ms. Madazi Mhango-Nkunika, a lawyer.

Unfamiliar with the exact location, she used Google Maps to navigate. Upon arrival and parking near the house, a metallic green unregistered Toyota Hilux, driven by a lone male, pulled up beside her. The suspect asked if she knew someone named “Mrs. Kawandami.” After she replied no, he suddenly produced a firearm and fired at least three shots at her while she was still in the driver’s seat.

Ms. Mwamba sustained a gunshot wound to her right arm but managed to reverse her vehicle and flee in high gear, despite being briefly pursued by the gunman. She later returned to the residence where she received help and was rushed to CFB Hospital on Addis Ababa Road. She is reported to be in stable condition.

Police anti-robbery officers visited both the victim and the scene of the attack. Forensic evidence, including a recovered projectile found between the driver’s seat and the door, confirmed that the vehicle had been shot multiple times. A docket for Unlawful Wounding has been opened and investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the suspect.

The president of the American Federation of Musicians fires a pummeling barrage at Donald Trump in retaliation for his unhinged attacks on  Taylor Swift

The president of the American Federation of Musicians fires a pummeling barrage at Donald Trump in retaliation for his unhinged attacks on industry superstars Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen.

The music world is uniting in force against MAGA…

“The American Federation of Musicians will not remain silent as two of our members – Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift – are singled out and personally attacked by the President of the United States,” stated Tino Gagliardi, the president of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada.

The AFM/AFofM is a widely respected labor union with nearly 66,000 members.

“Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift are not just brilliant musicians, they are role models and inspirations to millions of people in the United States and across the world,” Gagliardi continued.

“Whether it’s Born in the USA or the Eras Tour, their music is timeless, impactful, and has deep cultural meaning. Musicians have the right to freedom of expression, and we stand in solidarity with all our members,” he concluded.

Gagliardi’s bold defense of the stars in question came after Trump lashed out on Truth Social.

“Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?'” wrote the so-called president.

As Variety points out, Taylor Swift has never been more popular. In December, she concluded the highest grossing tour in history, raking in some $2 billion in grosses.

Trump’s attack on Springsteen was lengthier, precipitated by the singer’s anti-Trump remarks at a concert in England.

“I see that Highly Overrated Bruce Springsteen goes to a Foreign Country to speak badly about the President of the United States,” Trump wrote.

“Never liked him, never liked his music, or his Radical Left Politics and, importantly, he’s not a talented guy — Just a pushy, obnoxious JERK, who fervently supported Crooked Joe Biden, a mentally incompetent FOOL, and our WORST EVER President, who came close to destroying our Country,” he went on.

“If I wasn’t elected, it would have been GONE by now! Sleepy Joe didn’t have a clue as to what he was doing, but Springsteen is ‘dumb as a rock,’ and couldn’t see what was going on, or could he (which is even worse!)?” he continued.

“This dried out ‘prune’ of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country, that’s just ‘standard fare.’ Then we’ll all see how it goes for him!” he concluded.

The Truth Social meltdown occurred after Springsteen kicked off his hotly anticipated “Land of Hopes & Dreams” tour across Europe with a bombastic Trump takedown in Manchester.

“In my home, the America I love, the America I’ve written about, that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration,” the singer told the crowd.

“Tonight, we ask all who believe in democracy and the best of our American experiment to rise with us, raise your voices against authoritarianism and let freedom ring!” he continued.

Later in the show, Springsteen circled back—

“The last check on power after the checks and balances of government have failed are the people, you and me,” he said.

“It’s in the union of people around a common set of values now that’s all that stands between a democracy and authoritarianism. At the end of the day, all we’ve got is each other.”

“There’s some very weird, strange, and dangerous sh*t going on out there right now. In America they are persecuting people for using their right to free speech and voicing their dissent. This is happening now,” said Springsteen.

“In America, the richest men are taking satisfaction in abandoning the world’s poorest children to sickness and death,” he continued.

“In my country, they’re taking sadistic pleasure in the pain they inflict on loyal American workers. They’re rolling back historic civil rights legislation that has led to a more just and plural society,” Springsteen went on.

“They are abandoning our great allies and siding with dictators against those struggling for their freedom,” he said. “They are defunding American universities that won’t bow down to their ideological demands. They are removing residents off American streets and without due process of law, are deporting them to foreign detention centers and prisons. This is all happening now.”

“A majority of our elected representatives have failed to protect the American people from the abuses of an unfit president and a rogue government,” he continued. “They have no concern or idea for what it means to be deeply American.”

“The America l’ve sung to you about for 50 years is real, and, regardless of its faults, is a great country with a great people,” he said. “So we’ll survive this moment. Now, I have hope, because I believe in the truth of what the great American writer James Baldwin said. He said, ‘In this world there isn’t as much humanity as one would like, but there’s enough.’ Let’s pray.”

R1.4 Million spent on failed budget speech attempts, MPs demand answers

R1.4 Million spent on failed budget speech attempts, MPs demand answers

As South Africa braces for a third attempt to deliver the national budget speech, Members of Parliament are raising concerns over the R1.4 million spent on two previously failed sittings.

The botched sessions, held on 19 February and 12 March at the Nieuwmeester Dome, have sparked debate about fiscal accountability at a time when economic pressures are mounting.

According to parliamentary reports, the costs covered logistics and operations for the disrupted sittings, which failed to proceed due to procedural and political disputes.

With the third budget speech looming, MPs are pressing for transparency on how these funds were allocated and what measures will prevent further wastage.

The public, already frustrated by economic challenges, is watching closely. “This is taxpayer money,” said one MP, speaking anonymously. “We need clarity and assurance that Parliament is prioritizing the nation’s needs.”

As the government prepares for the upcoming session, all eyes are on whether it can deliver a budget that addresses South Africa’s pressing issues without adding to the financial burden of failed attempts.

“I left my 5-bedroom house”, One of 49 Afrikaner refugees speaks out on fleeing South Africa to the U.S.

Charl Kleinhaus, a 46-year-old Afrikaner who recently gained refugee status in the U.S., has sparked fierce debate after publicly stating he fled racial persecution in South Africa despite leaving behind a five-bedroom home, a car, pets, and his mother.

Speaking in a widely circulated BBC interview, Kleinhaus claimed, “If you’re white, you’re wrong in South Africa,” citing threats and discrimination as reasons for his departure.

He is among 49 Afrikaners fast-tracked into the U.S. under a new policy by President Donald Trump, who cited alleged race-based government discrimination in South Africa a claim strongly denied by the South African government.

President Cyril Ramaphosa called the move politically motivated, dismissing the group as privileged individuals resisting social change.

The case has divided public opinion. Critics argue Kleinhaus’s wealth undermines his refugee claim, while others point to his past antisemitic and Islamophobic remarks, which he blames on medication.

Elon Musk calls Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) laws a disgrace to Mandela’s legacy

Musk calls BEE laws a disgrace to Mandela’s legacy

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has ignited controversy by criticizing South Africa’s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) laws, calling them a “disgrace” to Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

Musk, who was born in South Africa during apartheid, took to X (formerly Twitter) to condemn the policy, which mandates that foreign companies such as his satellite internet venture, Starlink cede 30% ownership to historically disadvantaged South Africans. Musk argued the laws effectively discriminate against him for not being Black.

The remarks, posted on X, have divided South Africans. Supporters argue BEE prioritizes race over merit, stifling economic growth. Critics, however, defend the laws as vital for redressing apartheid’s economic inequalities, accusing Musk of misrepresenting Mandela’s fight for racial justice.

Many expressed outrage at Musk invoking Mandela, noting the icon’s support for policies to uplift Black South Africans.
Musk’s comments follow his history of controversial statements on South African issues, including land reform and farm attacks.

While some X users back his call to end “reverse discrimination,” others label him hypocritical, citing his family’s apartheid-era wealth and his departure from the country at 18.

The debate underscores ongoing tensions over race and economic policy in South Africa, 30 years after apartheid’s end, with Mandela’s legacy at the heart of the divide.

Unlike Mwanawasa and Sata, HH Has Used A Draconian Political Tactic to Gain Numbers Inside Parliament – Miles Sampa

Unlike Mwanawasa and Sata, HH Has Used A Draconian Political Tactic to Gain Numbers Inside Parliament.

MBS 17.05.2025

The first Republican President to have needed some support from opposition MPs was Levy Patrick Mwanawasa-LPM State Counsel (MHSREIP). In 2001 he won elections by a thread with incumbent MMD MP seats highly diluted by the UPND, FDD, Heritage, UNIP & PF.

LPM needed a survival strategy otherwise risked impeachment from a united opposition MPs. He had to lure some of the opposition MPs to his side or had to reduce their numbers by crook, force or otherwise. He opted for the softer and smarter options by offering ministerial positions to some opposition MPs in particular from the Heritage and FDD. He reigned peacefully through to the next election in 2006 which he won again.

Came Michael Chilufya Sata-MCS and the PF in 2011. It was a slightly hang parliament aswell with MPs shared amongst PF, the UPND and losing party MMD. Sata too needed to reduce opposition MPs numbers who were not on his side or risked an impeachment aswell. He too went for the softer approach and attracted MMD MPs to pledge allegiance to him.

I happen to have been involved in the exercise of recruiting MMD MPs to accept Sata’s appointments as deputy Ministers. Hon Given Lubinda led the process together with Davies Mwila. We sneaked into Statehouse the likes of Keith Mukata, Folly Tembo, Charles Banda etc to meet Sata. Next they were sworn in as deputy Minister and Sata got the threshold of MPs majority he needed in parliament. Take note that he did not go for drastic measures to acquire the numbers he needed.

Then came President Hakainde Hichilema-HH of the UPND in 2021. He had simple majority of MPs in parliament under his UPND but not enough to make 2/3 majority required to amend the Constitution. From simple majority he can pass about any bill and that’s why even the rogue cyber laws went through virtually unopposed, by vote that is as they have always had numbers for 51% simple majority required to pass a bill.

From onset however HH seemed to have had the desire to change the constitution and that needed support from both independent MPs and the Opposition. Rightly so he opted to deal with the Independent MPs who were highest ever in number at about 15 MP from previous sessions of 1 or 2. They were however all ECL and PF aligned Independent MPs due to mishaps at adoption stage and also some suicidal strategy adopted by the PF top level at the time to fund both actual adopted MPs and those not adopted but opted to stand Independents.

They argued the approach it was going to  maximize the presidential votes. It however backfired badly as most Independents won away from the PF boat symbol and their supporters also mostly voted away from the Presidential vote symbol of ECL. They gave him a rebel vote for not having adopted their preferred candidates.

So Independents after winning tell of a story on how they were lured to Community House secretly soon after HH was sworn in. They were excited that he would offer them either ministerial positions as LPM or MCS did or atleast just something to get them to support him. Incidentally political support at that level does not come for a song but HH thought and still thinks it does. He neither offered them ministerial job or anything but a long speech about himself and what his vision was.

Consequently and with years passing most Independent MPs realigned themselves back to their original home PF and to ECL who they publicly acknowledged as their Father.

Unlike his predecessors, HH then evoked a strategy to force by-elections on Independent and opposition PF seats by any means necessary. Most if not all opposition PF and independent MPs seats that were petitioned by UPND losing candidates were won by incumbents both at High Court and Apeals level.

After failing to take the opposition and Independent seats via petitions, the next step HH took was to use the Police to arrest and slap political charges on on various non UPND MPs. Charges mostly through words spoken politically or otherwise and equally made by some UPND MPs but do not get arrested.

Within the last 2 years and as HH looks determined to change the Zambian constitution to favour his stay in power in next year’s general elections, atleast 6 MPs have been convicted by the state prosecutors and by-elections  created. Name them; Bowman Lusambo, Joseph  Malanji, Nixon Chilangwa, Ronald Chitotela, JJ Banda to now Munir Zulu and Maureen Mabonga.

Unlike LPM and MCS, HH has instead opted to use a sledge hammer to get MP numbers to his side. In short he has opted for a brutal approach and in the process made families lose their parents languishing in prison all just so he gains numbers inside Parliament.

Unprecedented and un Zambian is what HH has done. History will judge him harshly and more so that he may not even get the 2/3 majority he wants to change the constitution. Watch the space closely.

WAKE UP CALL TO THE OPPOSITION: MOBILIZE OR PERISH-  Ephraim Shakafuswa

By Ephraim Shakafuswa

WAKE UP CALL TO THE OPPOSITION: MOBILIZE OR PERISH

These imprisonments, harassments, and acts of political persecution? They are not mistakes. They are not isolated. They are not stopping. From the beginning, this government declared they would govern using mingalato — and that is exactly what they’re doing.

Look around you: President Edgar Lungu not eligible. Bowman Lusambo dragged through the mud.
Kawambwa, Pambashe, Munir Zulu, Jay Jay and now  Mabonga — all targeted, isolated, and harassed.

This is a systematic strategy to weaken and destroy the opposition before 2026. And yet, what do we see in response? Tears, tweets, tired alliances, and empty speeches. Let it be known:

You will not win power by begging for fairness from those who fear accountability.

REALITY CHECK: IF YOU THINK THEY’LL HAND OVER POWER, JUST JOIN THEM

Let’s speak truth: If you are expecting these people to simply hand over power in 2026 — then stop wasting our time and just join them. Because that’s not going to happen. This is not a government preparing for a free and fair election. This is a regime preparing for total control, for political cleansing, and for a post-election crackdown like you’ve never seen before. If you’re not going to organize, educate, and mobilize the people, then step aside for those who will.

THE VOTERS ARE NOT ON FACEBOOK — THEY’RE IN PAIN

You keep posting, tweeting, and holding press conferences — but the real Zambia isn’t online. The voters are not on Facebook. They’re in: The compounds, struggling with power cuts and mealie meal prices. The villages, forgotten by both government and opposition. The markets, trying to survive another day of economic hardship. Some don’t even have smartphones. Some can’t afford bundles. Others have no voice, and they’re suffering alone.

What are you doing to mobilize them?

Where is your message in the language they understand?

Where are your structures?

Social media doesn’t win elections. Mobilization does. Groundwork does. Unity does.

TO PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU: ZAMBIA IS WAITING

President Lungu, this is your moment. The nation is bleeding, and your people are under siege. Your silence is beginning to echo as indifference. We urge you — not as supporters, but as citizens — rise. Speak. Act. You are one of the few remaining voices with the moral authority to unite, stabilize, and inspire a resistance to this creeping dictatorship. Whether you plan to run or not, your presence and leadership are needed. The people are waiting. Not for politics — but for leadership.

TO THE OPPOSITION: WAKE UP OR DISAPPEAR

Here’s what we must do — now:

✅ Unite. Enough of ego-driven alliances that yield nothing. People are tired.
✅ Mobilize. Go to the people. House to house. Market to market. Compound to village.

✅ Train your structures. Empower youth, women, churches, and civil groups.
✅ Stop being petty. Petty fights are luxuries for those not in a struggle.
✅ Inspire hope. Give people a reason to believe again.

✅ Protect your own. Set up legal and crisis response teams.
✅ Build real strategy. This is not business as usual. This is survival politics.

This is your final warning: If the opposition doesn’t grow up, stand up, and speak with one voice — 2026 won’t be an election. It’ll be a burial. And not just of parties — but of democracy itself. Because when people lose faith in elections, they stop voting. And when people stop voting, they start breaking.

Courage is no longer optional. It is required.

Hichilema to the United States: Recall your Ambassador. No thanks, responded Washington- Sishuwa Sishuwa

Hichilema to the United States: Recall your Ambassador. No thanks, responded Washington

By Sishuwa Sishuwa

Last year, President Hichilema unsuccessfully tried to get rid of the US Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales after he criticised the government for corruption. According to credible sources on the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Hichilema’s officials asked the Biden administration to recall Gonzales, but the US State Department rejected the request.

Gonzales, who arrived in September 2022, is the first US Ambassador to Zambia since 2019 when his predecessor, Daniel Foote, was forced out of the country by Hichilema’s predecessor, Edgar Lungu. Foote had also criticised corruption, saying “The current Government of Zambia is stealing millions of dollars in public funds…[and] wants diplomats to be compliant, with open pockets and closed mouths”.

The attack on Gonzales is not an isolated incident; it is part of a wider strategy by Hichilema to escape accountability by seeking the removal of diplomats who publicly criticise his administration. A European diplomat who attacked present-day corruption was recently warned about their conduct while others have been intimidated into silence. Hichilema also unsuccessfully lobbied the Vatican to remove the Archbishop of Lusaka Alick Banda who has been a sharp critic of his policies or actions.

For Zambians, Hichilema has simply placed significant restrictions on political and civil rights. Over the last three and half years, his administration has either enacted or maintained repressive legislation that undermines freedom of expression, regularly arrested ordinary citizens and civic activists who criticise him or his officials, largely suppressed peaceful assemblies and protests on governance concerns, and frequently abused state institutions such as the police and the judiciary to arrest and imprison political opponents, mainly opposition lawmakers, on trumped-up charges like sedition.

UPPZ URGES POLITICAL PARTIES TO STOP CRITICIZING THE COUNTRY INFRONT OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

UPPZ URGES POLITICAL PARTIES TO STOP CRITICIZING THE COUNTRY INFRONT OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY.

By Mercy Mulenga

The United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) party has expressed concern over opposition politicians who criticize the country harshly in front of the international community.

Party leader Charles Chanda, said such behavior paints Zambia in a bad light and could harm its reputation.

Mr. Chanda, has since questioned how politicians who want to lead the country can speak negatively about it abroad.

He argued that leaders must show love for Zambia first before anything else.

Mr. Chanda, urged all politicians to be more patriotic and work together to promote Zambia’s progress.

He further called for issue-based debates instead of personal attacks.

LEVY, DIABETES, HYPERTENSION AND PHYSICAL EXERCISE

LEVY, DIABETES, HYPERTENSION AND PHYSICAL EXERCISE

The late President Levy Mwanawasa was not only disciplined with financial matters. He was disciplined in a lot of life’s aspects, including “religiously” taking medication whenever it was prescribed.

No wonder he was troubled each time his hypertensive younger sister, the late Rona, refused to take medication insisting that “nature would cure” her. Out of his 59 years on earth, Mwanawasa lived with diabetes for 19 years and was hypertensive for 24 years. He told me that the moment he was found to be diabetic and hypertensive in the late 1980s, he quit alcoholic beverages including the fizzy drinks and juices.

“I have forgotten about alcohol. I just take water although once in a long while, I do sip some fruit juice,” he said. “But I had to take champagne to celebrate that time when I won the Presidential petition case in the Supreme Court.”

Hypertension and diabetes ran in Mwanawasa’s family. His father, Patrick Chipokota Mayamba Mwanawasa died in 1975 at the age of 53, a few weeks or months after Levy started his legal practice. He was unwell for some time and the family did not know what he was suffering from until he died.

But Levy suspected that his father could have died from high blood pressure. This theory was based on the fact that high blood pressure and diabetes later ran through the Mwanawasa family.

He recalled:
“My elder sister, Violet, died from a stroke ignited by high blood pressure. The immediate cause of Harry’s [his immediate younger brother] death was high blood pressure. Rona’s blood pressure sometimes gets as high as 270/150. Evelyn [the last born] also sometimes experiences that. It’s worse for Rona because she doesn’t believe in taking medicines. She believes that nature will cure her.

In my case, I take medicine very religiously. I have been hypertensive for 24 years and diabetic for 19 years. I take medication so both diseases are very well controlled. But there are times when they get out of control. When I had that first stroke in April, 2006, the blood pressure was low which was very surprising because I have never had low blood pressure. That low blood pressure is worse than high blood pressure. But I look after myself very well.”

Apart from religiously taking prescribed medication, Mwanawasa firmly believed in the power of physical exercise. You may recall that in April 2008, the news of then opposition leader Michael Sata’s heart attack reached him when he was busy exercising in the gym at Chamba Valley.

According to medical experts, physical exercise is crucial for diabetic patients for the purpose of managing blood sugar, improving insulin sensitivity, and preventing complications. Physical exercise can also help in lowering blood glucose levels, reduce insulin resistance, and improve cardiovascular health.

Mwanawasa also struggled with weight management so he was keen on physical exercise which played a vital role in managing his weight apart from reducing stress, and improving overall well-being.

Well folks, I thought I could share this little thought on the need for physical exercise as we go into the weekend.

Enjoy!

Zamcargo Declares First-Ever Dividend of K4.2 Million to IDC

Zamcargo Declares First-Ever Dividend of K4.2 Million to IDC

Zamcargo, a freight forwarding and cargo handling firm wholly owned by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), has declared its first-ever dividend of K4.2 million to its shareholder. This historic milestone signals a turning point for the company, which has recorded significant operational and financial improvements over the past two years.

Speaking at the cheque presentation ceremony, IDC Chief Executive Officer Cornwell Muleya praised Zamcargo’s board and management for their performance and commitment to sustainable growth. “It’s a great pleasure to receive this return on the investment that Zambia has made through IDC, on behalf of the people,” he said, encouraging the company to stay on its current path.

Mr. Muleya emphasized that Zamcargo’s strategic turnaround aligns well with IDC’s broader mission to transform State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) into profitable, accountable, and growth-driven entities. He commended the company’s progress toward meeting its financial targets and its commitment to delivering value for Zambia.

Zamcargo Board Vice Chairperson Muyunda Munyinda presented the dividend cheque and attributed the company’s success to governance reforms, improved internal controls, and strategic business development. He highlighted the board’s consistent efforts to empower management with the right skills and identify growth opportunities.

Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, Zamcargo was established to streamline Zambia’s import and export logistics by reducing costs and minimizing delays at the port. The company plays a critical role in conserving Zambia’s foreign currency reserves through efficient cargo handling.

As part of its new Strategic Plan, Zamcargo is expanding its regional footprint. The company is setting up a second depot in Tanzania and entering new markets such as Namibia, aiming to scale up its cargo handling capacity and enhance revenue growth.

This dividend declaration is not only a financial achievement but also a signal of the company’s transformation. Zamcargo’s performance offers a model for other SOEs on how strong governance, innovation, and accountability can translate into tangible national returns.

THE FNB LOAN WAS CLEARED IN OCTOBER 2020, LONG BEFORE MALANJI’S ANKARA TRIP, COURT HEARD

THE FNB LOAN WAS CLEARED IN OCTOBER 2020, LONG BEFORE MALANJI’S ANKARA TRIP, COURT HEARD

Lusaka… Friday May 16, 2025 — CONTRARY to allegations by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), the K10 million loan obtained from the First National Bank (FNB) was cleared in October 2020 by Gibson Power Systems way before former minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Malanji’s trip to Turkey, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court has heard.

And Malanji has clarified that a loan that Gibson Power Systems had applied for at FNB to facilitate the development and renovations of the Gibson Royal Hotel was disbursed nine months later after the company had already mobilised some funds from other sources, thereby using the given loan in other business ventures.

In cross examination by the state in the matter before Lusaka Principal Resident Magistrate Ireen Wishimanga, Malanji maintained that Gibson Power Systems, a company in which he is one of the directors and shareholders, had liquidated the loan obtained from FNB before his trip to Ankara, Turkey, as testified by a state witness from FNB.

It is alleged that the K10 million loan obtained in 2015 was liquidated after Malanji returned from Turkey in December 2020, but a senior manager at FNB, Biggy Trywell Banda, testified that the said loan was cleared in October 2020 by Gibson Power Systems way before Malanji’s Ankara trip.

When asked to confirm that the loan was only settled after his Turkey trip, Malanji responded in the negative.

“It is not true that the loan was cleared after my return from Ankara. It was cleared way before my Ankara trip as evidenced by the bank deposits that I presented before this court. In fact, even a senior manager at FNB, Biggy Trywell Banda, also told this honourable court that the loan was cleared in October 2020 by Gibson Power Systems way before my Ankara trip,” Malanji said.

Malanji also explained that Gibson Power Systems had delayed to settle the bank loan because there were some contentions, and after serious negotiations with the FNB in South Africa, the loan was cleared in October 2020.

Meanwhile, Malanji has also clarified that a loan that Gibson Power Systems had applied for at FNB for purposes of renovations of the Gibson Royal Hotel was disbursed nine months later after the company had sourced some funds from somewhere else and already renovated the hotel.

“The loan was overtaken by events as the money came in late. But when the loan was disbursed after renovations were already done, the company decided to channel the money to other businesses,” he said.

This is a matter in which Malanji, is charged of being in possession of property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime, while his co-accused, former Secretary to the Treasury Fredson Yamba is charged with wilful failure to comply with applicable law and procedure relating to procurement of property in Turkey.

Malanji is particularly accused of possessing two helicopters BELL430 and a BELL 206 Jet Ranger, Gibson Royal Hotel and houses in Chongwe’s Silverest Gardens, deemed to be proceeds of crime.

On the two helicopters, Malanji maintained during cross-examination that the source of funds for purchase of helicopters came from Gibson Power Systems and Gibson Air Charter.

He said it was shocking that he was charged with possession of the aircrafts when he did not personally purchase them.

Malanji further stated that the companies associated with him had the capacity to procure a Bell 430 helicopter and Bell 206 jet range as evidenced by the over USD 5.950 million turnover bank statement between 2010 and 2020 from FNB and Stanbic Bank.

On the houses in Chongwe’s Silverest area, Malanji maintained that his income—comprising allowances, salaries and gratuities as a Member of Parliament and later Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as the rentals collected from tenants were channelled towards the purchase of the properties.

The matter was adjourned to Monday, May 19, 2025 to allow the defense to bring witnesses.

CHILILABOMBWE SHOWCASES RESILIENCE AND PROGRESS IN AGRICULTURE AND MINING SECTORS

CHILILABOMBWE SHOWCASES RESILIENCE AND PROGRESS IN AGRICULTURE AND MINING SECTORS

By Wagon Media

Telling the Story of a Rising Zambia

Chililabombwe, Copperbelt Province – The spirit of resilience and determination was on full display today as the Chililabombwe District Agriculture and Mining Show officially opened at Kamenza East Show Grounds. The event, held under the theme “Adapting to Climate Change,” brought together farmers, miners, and local leaders to reflect on growth, adaptation, and future opportunities in the district.

In officiating the event, we saluted the hard-working people of Chililabombwe who, despite the harsh drought conditions of last year, have remained steadfast in their agricultural pursuits. Thanks to President Hakainde Hichilema’s decisive leadership and call to action, the Copperbelt region is now on track to produce a bumper harvest. This is expected to result in greater mealie meal availability and declining prices, a much-needed relief for many Zambian households.

We also spotlighted government efforts to make farming more sustainable. Notably, increased fertilizer production in Lusaka and Kafue will soon bring down costs for small-scale and commercial farmers alike.

Farmers were encouraged to sell their maize to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) at the forthcoming official floor price rather than fall prey to middlemen offering unfair deals. Additionally, we reminded families to prioritize food security by retaining sufficient maize for household consumption.

Chililabombwe’s development under President Hichilema is tangible. From the modernization of the Kasumbalesa Border Post to road infrastructure upgrades and revitalization of the mining sector, the government’s commitment to this key district is unwavering.

The show served as a testament to how unity, innovation, and leadership can turn adversity into opportunity — positioning Chililabombwe as a model of rural and industrial transformation in Zambia.
