Rwanda-backed rebels seize key town in DR Congo

0

Rebel forces backed by Rwanda have captured the town of Masisi in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to various reports.

This is the second town seized by the M23 group in as many days in the mineral-rich North Kivu province.

The group has taken control of vast swathes of eastern DR Congo since 2021, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes.

Angola has been attempting to mediate talks between President Félix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame. But these broke down last month.

“It is with dismay that we learn of the capture of Masisi centre by the M23,” Alexis Bahunga, a member of North Kivu provincial assembly, told the AFP news agency.

He said this “plunges the territory into a serious humanitarian crisis” and urged the government to strengthen the capacity of the army in the region.

One resident told AFP that the M23 had held a meeting of the town’s inhabitants, saying they had “come to liberate the country”.

The Congolese authorities have not yet commented on the loss of the town.

Masisi, which has a population of about 40,000, is the capital of the territory of the same name.

It is about 80km (50 miles) north of the North Kivu provincial capital Goma, which the M23 briefly occupied in 2012.

On Friday, the M23 captured the nearby town of Katale.

Last year, there were fears that the M23 would once again march on Goma, a city of about two million people.

However, there was then a lull in fighting until early December when fighting resumed.

In July, Rwanda did not deny a UN report saying it had about 4,000 soldiers fighting alongside the M23 in DR Congo.

It accused the Congolese government of not doing enough to tackle decades of conflict in the east of the country. Rwanda has previously said the authorities in DR Congo were working with some of those responsible for the 1994 Rwandan genocide against ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus.

The M23, formed as an offshoot of another rebel group, began operating in 2012 ostensibly to protect the Tutsi population in the east of DR Congo which had long complained of persecution and discrimination.

However, Rwanda’s critics accuse it of using the M23 to loot eastern DR Congo’s minerals such as gold, cobalt and tantalum, which are used to make mobile phones and batteries for electric cars.

Last month, DR Congo said it was suing Apple over the use of such “blood minerals”, prompting the tech giant to say it had stopped getting supplies from both countries.

CHINESE NATIONALS ARRESTED WITH GOLD BARS AND $800,000 CASH IN DR CONGO

CHINESE NATIONALS ARRESTED WITH GOLD BARS AND $800,000 CASH IN DR CONGO

Three Chinese nationals have been arrested with 12 gold bars and $800,000 (£650,000) in cash in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, officials say.

The gold and money was hidden under the seats of the vehicle they were travelling in, according to Jean Jacques Purusi, the governor of South Kivu province.

He said the operation to arrest the men had been kept secret after the recent release of another group of Chinese nationals accused of running an illegal gold mine in the area.

Eastern DR Congo has abundant reserves of gold, diamonds and the minerals used to make batteries for mobile phones and electric vehicles.

This mineral wealth has been plundered by foreign groups since the colonial era and is one of the main reasons why the region has been plagued by instability for the last 30 years.

Militia groups control many of the mines in eastern DR Congo and their leaders become wealthy by selling it to middle-men.

Purusi said some of these dealers in precious metals enjoyed good relations with influential people in the capital, Kinshasa, and this was why the mission to carry out these latest arrests had to be kept quiet.

He said they had been acting on a tip-off and that the gold and money was only found after a meticulous search of the vehicle in the Walungu area not far from the border with Rwanda.

He did not say exactly how much gold had been seized.

Last month, the governor told reporters he was shocked to hear that 17 Chinese nationals, who had been arrested on allegations they had been running an illegal gold mine, had been freed and allowed to return to China.

He said this undermined efforts to clean up DR Congo’s notoriously murky mineral sector.

They owed $10m in taxes and fines to the government, the Reuters news agency quotes him as saying.

The Chinese embassy has not commented on the allegations.

The arrests come as fighting continues to flare in the neighbouring North Kivu province, where a Rwanda-backed rebel group has captured large areas of territory.

Last month, DR Congo said it was suing Apple over the use of “blood minerals”, prompting the tech giant to say it had stopped getting supplies from both DR Congo and neighbouring Rwanda.

Rwanda has denied being a conduit for the export of illegal minerals from DR Congo.

In their lawsuit, lawyers acting for the Congolese government alleged that the minerals taken from conflict areas was then “laundered through international supply chains”.

“These activities have fuelled a cycle of violence and conflict by financing militias and terrorist groups and have contributed to forced child labour and environmental devastation,” they said.

Gov to Govt fuel deal bears fruits: Chakwera leadership secures 51.5 million litres

0

President Lazarus Chakwera’s government has finally secured fuel that Malawi will begin receiving the item shipments under a government-to-government arrangement on January 9, 2025.

This initiative, involving Malawi, Kenya, and Saudi Arabia, aims to address the country’s ongoing fuel shortages, which have severely impacted transportation and economic activities.

In a press statement issued on January 3, 2025 by the Ministry of Energy, the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA), in collaboration with its Kenyan counterpart, has facilitated the importation of 40,000 metric tons (approximately 51.5 million liters) of combined diesel and petrol.

The consignment is part of a broader plan to secure fuel supply agreements with Gulf countries, leveraging Kenya’s established government-to-government framework with Abu Dhabi.

The shipment arrived at Tanzania’s Port of Tanga on December 29, 2024, aboard the vessel MT High Freedom.

Quality testing conducted on December 31 confirmed that the fuel meets Malawi’s technical standards.

Offloading of the cargo began on January 1, 2025, with loading onto road tankers set to start on January 6. The first fuel deliveries to Malawi are expected to arrive on January 9, 2025.

To ensure efficient transportation, both Malawian and foreign trucking companies have been engaged, with an anticipated 1,409 truckloads required to deliver the entire consignment.

The government has also emphasized that regular fuel imports by NOCMA, Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL), and other licensed entities will continue alongside this emergency consignment.

Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola reassured the public of the government’s commitment to resolving the recent fuel shortages.

“We are working tirelessly with all stakeholders to restore normalcy and ensure a stable supply of fuel in the country,” says Matola.

This development is expected to alleviate Malawi’s immediate fuel supply challenges and pave the way for future bilateral agreements aimed at ensuring long-term energy security.

Malawi has been grappling with fuel crisis for months.

HAMAS LISTS 34 HOSTAGES IT MAY FREE UNDER CEASEFIRE

A senior Hamas official has shared with the BBC a list of 34 hostages that the Palestinian group says it is willing to release in the first stage of a potential ceasefire agreement with Israel.

It is unclear how many hostages remain alive.

Among those named are 10 women and 11 older male hostages aged between 50 and 85, as well as young children that Hamas previously said had been killed in an Israeli air strike.

A number of hostages that Hamas says are sick are also included on the list.

Reports from Hamas-run Gaza say Israeli air strikes killed more than 100 people there at the weekend.

The Israeli prime minister’s office denied reports that Hamas had provided Israel with a list of hostages.

Ceasefire negotiations resumed in Doha, Qatar, over the weekend, but the talks do not appear to have made significant progress yet.

A Hamas official told Reuters news agency any agreement to return Israeli hostages would depend on a deal for Israel to withdraw from Gaza and a permanent ceasefire or end to the war.

“However, until now, the occupation continues to be obstinate over an agreement over the issues of the ceasefire and withdrawal, and has made no step forward,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Earlier, Hamas posted a video of 19-year-old Israeli captive Liri Albag urging her government to make a deal.

She was captured along with six other female conscript soldiers at the Nahal Oz army base on the Gaza border during Hamas’s attack on 7 October 2023.

On that day Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 others hostage.

Israel’s military campaign to destroy Hamas had killed at least 45,805 people in Gaza as of Saturday, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.

The same source says Israeli air strikes killed 88 people in Gaza on Saturday itself while on Sunday, Reuters news agency quoted health sources as saying a further 17 had died in four separate Israeli attacks on the territory.

The Israeli military said on Sunday that its air force had attacked more than 100 “terrorist” sites across the Gaza Strip over the weekend, killing dozens of Hamas militants. (BBC News)

Shocking Abuse: Nurse Arrested for Breaking Black Newborns’ Bones in Intensive Care
A nurse has been arrested in a chilling case that has left families reeling and a community in shock. Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, 26, is accused of abusing and breaking the bones of Black newborn babies clinging to life in a hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The disturbing allegations stem from a series of incidents at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, where at least seven infants sustained “unexplainable fractures” over the past year and a half.

According to The Sun, the alleged abuse first came to light in the summer of 2023, when four babies under intensive care treatment were mysteriously injured. Despite hospital staff investigating, the attacks continued, with three more newborns suffering fractures in late 2024.

On Christmas Eve, the hospital announced it was shutting its NICU to new patients until the source of these horrific injuries was uncovered.

“It’s devastating,” said Dominique Hackey, whose son Noah was among the injured. Dominique and his wife, Tori, welcomed twin boys, Noah and Micah, in August 2023. While Micah struggled with serious health complications, Noah was born strong and healthy.

But just days later, their world was turned upside down.

“A nurse noticed Noah couldn’t move his left leg,” Dominique explained. “An x-ray showed his tibia was fractured. We couldn’t believe it.”

The injury, described by medical experts as highly unusual in a NICU setting, left the family shattered. “My mum, who has decades of nursing experience, told me, ‘This is not normal. Fractures like that don’t happen in newborn care,’” Dominique said, his voice breaking.

The family was plunged into a nightmare. “I was scared to hold my son,” Dominique admitted. “I thought I might have hurt him, but deep down, I knew I hadn’t.”

A Growing Mystery
As time passed, more infants showed similar injuries. By September 2024, the Hackeys were informed that a hospital employee was responsible. However, the identity of the perpetrator remained a mystery.

“It was intentional. It was child abuse,” Dominique said, his pain evident. “As a father, I’m supposed to protect my kids, and I couldn’t. It’s a feeling I can’t put into words.”

The hospital’s eventual decision to close its NICU brought renewed heartbreak for families like the Hackeys. “It reopened old wounds,” Dominique said. “It’s my baby boy. I feel like I failed him.”

On Friday, police arrested Strotman, charging her with malicious wounding and felony child abuse for a November 2024 incident that left three babies injured. Authorities are now combing through surveillance footage to determine if she is connected to earlier cases.

A spokesperson for HCA Virginia, which operates the hospital, expressed their shock and sadness. “We are focused on continuing to care for our patients and supporting our colleagues as we navigate this distressing situation,” the statement read.

Families Left in Shambles
For families affected, the trauma lingers.

“I trusted the people who were supposed to care for my babies,” Dominique said. “Instead, they were hurt. It’s something we’ll carry forever.”

Noah and Micah have since recovered, but the emotional scars remain. “Every time I see my son, I remember what happened. It never goes away,” Dominique shared.

The hospital has since installed additional cameras and introduced new training for staff. However, the community is demanding answers and justice for the vulnerable infants who were harmed.

As the investigation continues, Strotman remains in custody, awaiting trial.

“This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” one mother commented. “We put our trust in them, and they broke it in the worst way possible.”

The case has sparked outrage, heartbreak, and calls for accountability, with families vowing to fight for justice.

Mother Of The Woman Who Died From Food Poisoning A few Days After Her Lobola Ceremony Also Passes On

The mother of the Zimbabwean woman from the Zion Christian church who died a few days after her lobola ceremony due to alleged food poisoning has also passed away.

A woman by the name of Renia Gwarumba has been trending since she died on the 3rd of January 2025 after she got traditionally married on the 22nd of December.

Reports have it that she was served poisoned food on the day of her lobola ceremony, which she ingested, and it ended up killing her. Her burial was held on the 5th of January, and family and friends attended it.

Renia Gwarumba’s mother’s unfortunate demise
Upon learning about the death of her daughter, Renia’s mother is said not to have handled the news well. She also then passed on on the same day her daughter was buried.

The Gwarumba family was left devasted and mourning the loss of the once bubbly mother and child. Some reports are saying that Renia’s mother may have also ingested the poisoned food, but no official statement has been made in that regard.

The mother leaves behind a son named Eric and a mourning husband who is also claimed to be experiencing a psychotic breakdown due to the overwhelming of the two losses in a short period.

Zimbabweans react to the news of Renia’s death.
Many Zimbabweans have been shocked by the news of losing the young woman’s life this way. Some are warning people against having many family members and friends around for special occasions like these. Others are calling for traditional healers to help the family by doing ‘back to sender rituals’, which will have the perpetrator die or lose their mind, leading to a confession.

Ancelotti Backs Vinicius To Recover From Valencia Red Card

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has backed Vinicius Junior to recover from the setback of the incident against Valencia on Friday.

The Brazilian winger pushed goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski in the back of the neck amid a clash between the two players and was sent off.

Vinicius was mocked by Valencia fans at their Mestalla stadium during the game, having clashed with some who racially abused him in a match in 2022.

Ancelotti revealed that it is difficult to be in Vinicius shoes following his tough battle with racism in Spain.

He said: “I think it is difficult (to be Vinicius), I’m not in his skin, but I think it’s difficult.

“To bear everything that has happened, the insults, everything, it’s not so simple.

“Obviously he’s sad about the red card, he said sorry and we have to look forwards.”

Vinicius has suffered racial abuse at numerous stadiums in Spain, is also often targeted by fans for his behaviour on the pitch.

Ancelotti believes Vinicius has improved his attitude in reacting to the racial abuse, while revealing that the club will appeal the red card against Valencia.

He said: “What happens in stadiums… I think he has improved his attitude a lot, he can keep improving but nobody is perfect.

“I think he’s done a lot of work on that, and he has improved so much that he is the best player in the world.

“We’re still convinced it was not worth a red card but a yellow, so we hope he is not banned.”

Vinicius is likely to banned after the red card following his violent reaction when he was sent off, it will be decided next week, meaning he is available for Madrid’s Copa del Rey clash against Deportivo Minera on Monday.

Real Madrid will take on Mallorca in the Spanish Super Cup semifinal on Thursday in Saudi Arabia.

Lionel Messi: The Main Reason Inter Miami Star to Receive USA’s Highest Civilian Honour

0

Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi is set to receive the United States’ most prestigious civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The White House announced on Saturday that President Joe Biden will honour the Argentine icon and 18 other distinguished individuals for their exceptional contributions.

What is the Presidential Medal of Freedom?
The Presidential Medal of Freedom represents the pinnacle of civilian achievement in the United States.

It is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated remarkable contributions to society, whether by advancing prosperity, upholding values, enhancing national security, fostering global peace, or excelling in significant public or private endeavours.

Why Messi is being honoured
Messi, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest-ever players, joined Inter Miami in 2023 after an illustrious career primarily with Barcelona.

However, his on-field brilliance is only part of the story.

The White House cited his extensive philanthropic efforts, particularly those benefiting children, as the foundation for this recognition.

“He supports healthcare and education programs for children around the world through the Leo Messi Foundation and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador,” a statement from the White House emphasised.

Other notable recipients
Alongside Messi, the 2025 honourees include luminaries from diverse fields: chef José Andrés, U2 frontman Bono, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, actor Michael J. Fox, The Athletic reports.

Primatologist Jane Goodall, designer Ralph Lauren, scientist Bill Nye, philanthropist George Soros, and actor Denzel Washington, among others.

Meanwhile, former Secretary of Defense Ashton Baldwin Carter, civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, former Attorney General Robert Francis Kennedy and businessman George W. Romney are receiving the award posthumously.

Messi’s impact in the US
The 37-year-old’s move to the U.S. marked a new chapter in his career and brought global attention to Major League Soccer.

In his debut season, Messi led Inter Miami to victory in the inaugural Leagues Cup.

The following campaign saw him guide the Herons to the MLS Supporters’ Shield, although their quest for the MLS Cup fell short with a playoff defeat to Atlanta United, per Goal.

He was also named the Most Valuable Player of the 2024 season, further cementing his legacy as a footballer and ambassador for the sport in the U.S.

Man United End Losing Run With 2-2 Draw Against Liverpool

0

Liverpool and Manchester United played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Anfield on Sunday to dent the host’s Premier League title aspirations.

The Red Devils ended their four-match losing run following defeats to Tottenham, Bournemouth, Wolves, and Newcastle United.

Amorim’s men produced an improved performance at Anfield, making it difficult for Liverpool to break them down as the first half ended goalless.

The match bursted into life in the second half with both sides showing their attacking intent which produced four goals.

Martinez gave Manchester United the lead with a thumping effort in the 52nd minute following a superb pass from Bruno Fernandes.

Seven minutes later, Liverpool produced a stunning goal of their own when Gakpo finished emphatically beyond Onana to make it 1-1.

Mohammed Salah scored from the spot in the 70th minute after Matthijs De Ligt handled the ball in the 18-yard box.

The goal was an historic one for Salah as he continued his rich vein of form in the Premier League.

He has now scored 13 goals across his last 11 Premier League appearances against Manchester United.

He is now on 175 Premier League goals and joint seventh in the all-time list, level with the legendary Thierry Henry.

Amad rescued a point for Manchester United when he finished off Garnacho’s cross to make it 2-2 to end the visitors poor run in the Premier League.

Harry Maguire missed a glorious opportunity to hand the visitors the maximum points when he failed to hit the target from a Joshua Zirkzee’s pass from a good position.

Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes was frustrated with the result.

He said: “We can’t be satisfied. I’m pretty upset.

“If we can show this at Anfield, why can’t we do this every week? We need to be aware that we need much more from ourselves”.

Liverpool are now six points clear of second-placed Arsenal with a game in hand, while Manchester United are rooted in the 13th position, 23 points below the table-toppers.

Up next for Liverpool is a trip to Nottingham Forest on January 14, while Manchester United hosts Southampton on January 16.

WE HAVE SPENT K60, 000   MORE THAN FRED M’MEMBE ON DANDY CRAZY’S FUNERAL, SAYS PF

By Raphael Nakacinda

CLARIFICATION OF PLEDGED SUPPORT BY PF TOWARDS DANDY’S FUNERAL

It is very true that the statement by PF and Tonse alliance SG Hon comrade Nakachinda that PF would buy the burial site and coffin was on point.

What must be noted is that by the time PF went to secure the burial site, they found socialist members , family members to Dandy in the presence of other musician trying to secure the burial site.

The family members were kept at grave site for over 3 hrs while waiting for socialist to raise the money for the burial site the family had chosen, at that point PF asked to pay, the burial site the family chose was worth K50, 000 and PF negotiated and were given the discount of K600 and paid K49, 400. The only thing PF didnt do was put the receipt in their names but was put in the name of a family representative present.

When PF asked the family that they proceed to buy the coffin the family and the musician present indicated a well wisher had already procured the coffin, asked who the well wisher was so they could refund the money back as was already budgeted for and announced , the family and the musician declined to disclose the identity of the well wisher. Noticing the presence of socialist members, it was obvious to some extent.

It was then revealed that the coffin is paid for except for services. So PF asked to be taken where coffin was bought, it was at St. Anne’s UTH where PF leaders it was the socialist that bought the coffin and the receipts were in their names. At that point PF paid for other services that socialist had not paid for, the amount was in excess of K11, 000 which means PF in total had spent over K60, 000 towards the funeral of the great legend Dandy.

OURSELF INFLICTED FUEL DILEMMA BY DR JOHNSTONE CHIKWANDA, ENERGY EXPERT

OURSELF INFLICTED FUEL DILEMMA BY DR JOHNSTONE CHIKWANDA, ENERGY EXPERT

=====================

1) Zambia has recently been experiencing fuel stock outs, especially on petrol, due to alleged post electoral violence in Mozambique. Zambia’s petrol has, to a large extent, been coming via the Mozambique transit corridors.

2) Zambia is not the only country that uses the Mozambique corridor for fuel transportation yet it is more affected that other countries. Why?
3) Before these post electoral violence in Mozambique, Zimbabwe made changes to customs regulations for transit fuel tankers. This action affected at least 3,000 fuel tankers. This decision adversely impacted Zambia more than other countries. How?

4) The Petroleum Transporters of Zambia (PTAZ) has, for more than 5 years, been lobbying government to actualize the SI on fuel transportation thereby empowering the local transporters to be the only ones bringing fuel for Zambia as they have grown capacity to transport all Zambia’s fuel requirements by road. This request has been up to now not been fully granted since the SI on fuel transportation has not been actualized.

5) Most OMCs have continued to give long-term fuel transportation to foreign transporters at the expense of local transporters who equally have credible trucks. Very few local tankers are being used by OMCs for fuel importation. Lobbying government has been a daunting task for PTAZ.

6) Faced with this dilemma of not being used in the local market significantly on import routes, PTAZ members decided to secure long-term transportation contracts for DRC OMCs. This is in order to remain afloat since they are being shunned by Zambian OMCs.

7) Now the foreign tankers which the Local OMCs have been depending on for imports at the expense of Zambian tankers have found themselves in a dilemma due to customs duty changes for all transit fuel tankers in Zimbabwe. This means that all those foreign tankers hiredK by Zambian OMCs have been technically grounded by decisions in Zimbabwe.

8) In other words, the Zambian OMCs have now found themselves in a difficult position because their contracted foreign tankers have been grounded. Even if post electoral violence ended in Mozambique, the dilemma will still be in place significantly.

9) OMCs attempts to use Zambian Transporters whom they have been shunning in preference for foreign transporters is proving a challenge as most of them secured long term transportation contracts with DRC OMCs after being shunned in Zambia for importation of fuel. Only very few have been contracted.
10) Even more vexatious are indications that there are some foreign transporters registered in Zambia and licensed by ERB but they have been transporting fuel for DRC market and not for the local market they were licensed for meaning they have also joined the Zambian transporters into the DRC market.

11) The root cause of this petrol outage is the inability to actualize the SI on transportation of imported fuel by Zambian transporters. This loop hole has consistently given latitude to OMCs to continue using foreign tankers, possibly owned by sister companies or business partners or friends, to the detriment of local transporters. As a reaction, the local transporters opted to find business survival in the DRC market. But why do local OMCs prefer to use foreign tankers even when local transporters meet standards? This question can only be answered by OMCs.

12) All things being equal this problem shouldn’t have arisen if it was not the decisions in Zimbabwe grounding most foreign tankers. The Zambian OMCs have found themselves in a dilemma since the local tankers they were shunning as by and large not available this time around as they have been hired by DRC after being shunned locally.

13) There is also one major OMC whose actions are questionable.

WHAT ABOUT IF THE VI0LENCE IN MOZAMBIQUE ENDS?

The challenge for Zambia will, to a significant extent, remain in place because the real major issue is change to customs regulations in Zimbabwe for transit fuels.

Zimbabwe made decisions to curb millions of dollars which it was losing to fuel smuggling, so it tighted the loopholes eliminate tax evasion and other malfeasance.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

1) Actualize the SI on import fuel transportation by local transporters. This will pacify PTAZ and allied transporters. Under the current circumstances PTAZ is smilling having been shunned for too long in a significant way.

2) The pattern of over depending on foreign road transporters to bring fuel to Zambia in a significant way is not safe for Zambia. It cannot guarantee energy security.
3) Edit the monthly price review
4) Energy diplomacy.

5) Allow Ministry of Transport and Logistics to take a more leading role when dealing with tankers because it has experts in transportation as compared to Ministry of Energy/ERB as they don’t have transport system experts. That’s why even on the Tazama pipeline I have been advising that oversight is shifted to Ministry of Transport because pipeline is a transport issue. Oversight of the pipeline can shift to Ministry of Transport while the client Ministry can still remain Ministry of Energy. This will remove the conflict of interest of same Ministry providing oversight and is also running tenders for access of the pipeline.
6) Deal with what causes OMCs to prefer to use foreign tankers.

God Bless Zambia.

THE BIGGEST MOCKERY TO THE DEAD  – SAVIOUR CHISHIMBA

THE BIGGEST MOCKERY TO THE DEAD  – SAVIOUR CHISHIMBA

In the Jewish tradition, birth and death are equalisers. A human being comes into this world with nothing and departs with nothing. Whereas escorting the dead is a big mitzvah since the dead cannot pay the living back, giving tzdakah (mistranslated as “charity”) or doing a mitzvah in the name of the dead is even more honourable. A Jew is buried in a very simple pine casket and no nail is used in its making.

Flowers are not permitted because the dead are no longer alive to appreciate their beauty. Thus, wreaths are a mockery to the departed. Spending US$2,000 on a casket is not a mitzvah. It’s an insult and it has no benefit to the dead. From the Jewish perspective, such an amount would better be spent on a cause to perpetuate the legacy of the dead like support to children left behind or any charitable entity. Haven’t you wondered why there are more trust funds in the developed world than Africa? Jewish communities can top the list in terms of trust funds that have been created to honour the memory of the dead.

A couple of months ago, we put to rest Mrs Cynthia Zukas Z”L (a jewess). She founded the Lechwe Trust for Zambian artists. Her husband, Mr. Simon Zukas Z”L, the first Jewish cabinet minister and freedom fighter in Zambia supported UNZA and CBU with a total of over US$ 1 million. His legacy continues to be supported by the Jewry. Although he was a cabinet minister, we laid him to rest in a pine coffin and President Hakainde Hichilema attended the burial (it was a state funeral). Thus, unlike other late Zambian ministers, ours was buried in a pine coffin made by ourselves (zero public expenditure on a coffin although he was entitled).

The capitalistic mentality among African politicians is one of the sources of Africa’s economic woes. Huge amounts are spent on campaign paraphernalia for free distribution as an investment with a mindset of getting a return on investment once in government. The priority of Africa’s political groupings is abuse of public resources as pay back for the huge investments in campaigns. This includes giving priority to foreign entities who sponsor groups of imposters.

One of the priorities for national development has to be mindset change and the Zambian youth hold the key to this new thinking.

GOVT VOWS TO WORK “VERY HARD” THIS YEAR TO REDUCE INFLATION

GOVT VOWS TO WORK “VERY HARD” THIS YEAR TO REDUCE INFLATION

Minister of Finance and National Planning Situmbeko Musokotwane says the government’s principle objective this year is to continue building a stronger economy and achieve the set macroeconomic targets.

Speaking when he reviewed the December 2024 Budget expenditure report, Dr Musokotwane said the government will this year work “very” hard to attain a real GDP growth rate of 6.6%, reduce inflation to the 6-8% target band in the medium-term, maintain international reserves above 3.0 months of import cover and increase domestic revenue to at least 21.3% GDP.

He said government will also reduce the fiscal deficit to 3.1% of GDP and limit net domestic borrowing to 1.9 percent of GDP.

The Minister added that the Memorandums of Understanding signed with France and Saudi Arabia in December last year set the stage for the finalization of an additional 14 agreements with other creditor countries.

Dr Musokotwane said the agreements, currently under negotiation, aim to ensure comprehensive debt treatment that supports Zambia’s economic recovery efforts in 2025, and beyond.

He said public officials need to put their best foot forward by making sure that all necessary steps are taken to implement budgeted programmes and ensure that all sectors of the economy pull together towards building resilience for inclusive growth and improved livelihoods, in 2025 and beyond.

“The fact that 55% of the budget releases for December, 2024, went towards debt service and arrears, is a reminder of the fiscal disaster that would have befallen the nation had we not embarked on the debt restructuring process,” he said.

He added that the country would have been spending over 90% of its monthly budget releases on servicing the debt, thereby leading to a borrowing spiral to meet critical expenditure related to education, health, security, social welfare, and the payment of salaries to public service workers.

“Without debt restructuring, we would never have had any capacity to finance developmental programmes from our domestic resources by now,” he said.

The Minister revealed that in  December last year, the Ministry of Finance and National Planning released K23.1 billion for public service delivery, of which K3.9 billion went to the public service wage bill, K12.7 billion was spent on debt service (domestic and external) and arrears, K3.1 billion was released for transfers, subsidies and social benefits, K2.4 billion for implementation of various developmental programmes and general operations, and K1 billion for capital expenditure.

Diddy Branded A ‘Monster’ In ‘Making Of A Bad Boy’ Documentary Trailer

Diddy has been labeled a “monster” in a trailer for the upcoming documentary, The Making of a Bad Boy.

The film, which will be released by Peacock on January 14, explores the embattled mogul’s journey to stardom and shocking sexual assault allegations, featuring interviews with a number of close associates.

Some of the names set to appear in the documentary include former Bad Boy producer Ron “Amen-Ra” Lawrence, journalist Kim Osorio, ex-bodyguard Gene Deal and singer Al B. Sure, who shares a son with Puffy’s late ex Kim Porter (and who has insinuated that Diddy was responsible for him ending up in a coma).

One talking head in the film brands the accused sex trafficker a “monster,” while the doc also features unseen footage of Diddy partying.

One anonymous voice in the trailer also adds: “I’ve been with Sean for quite a while and I’ve captured a lot of moments. Any time a studio or any rooms is red, he’s making love and sex. Some of the ones who went in the room, for sure they were underage.”

An official synopsis reads: “Featuring never-before-seen footage and stories from those who know him best, Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy sheds light on his childhood, rise to fame, and recent criminal allegations, challenging viewers to rethink everything they thought they knew about the mogul behind the music—and the mugshot.”

The Making of a Bad Boy is not the only documentary in the works about the numerous sexual assault claims against Diddy.

50 Cent is working with Netflix on his own series about the Bad Boy Records founder.

However, he recently admitted that the project was proving difficult to put together.

During an appearance on GMA3: What You Need to Know, 50 said: “It’s a difficult project. Because every day there’s new accusations coming out, it’s new things that happened. It’s become an octopus, with so many powers and so many things going on there.”

KAZUNGULA UPND MEETING RESOLUTIONS DECLARED INVALID

KAZUNGULA UPND MEETING RESOLUTIONS DECLARED INVALID

The Southern Province United Party for National Development (UPND) leadership has nullified resolutions made during a January 1 meeting in Kabuyu, Kazungula District. The meeting, which saw selected district, constituency, and ward officials pass a vote of no confidence against District Chairman Shebby Mushabati and appoint new office bearers, has been deemed unconstitutional.

In a statement issued on January 3, Provincial UPND Chairman Mr. Billiard Makwembo described the meeting as unauthorized, saying, “The Provincial Committee was neither consulted nor informed of the meeting.”

Mr. Makwembo cited Article 42(c) of the UPND constitution, which grants the Provincial Management Committee exclusive authority to supervise and coordinate district activities. “The only body allowed to sanction such a meeting is the Provincial Committee,” he said.

He further highlighted procedural lapses, noting that Article 70, which outlines steps for addressing grievances and disciplinary actions, had been disregarded. “None of the required processes were followed in arriving at the decisions made during the January 1 meeting,” Mr. Makwembo stated.

As a result, he declared, “I, therefore, using powers vested in me by the party constitution as amended in 2021, declare the said meeting and its resolutions null and void.”

Mr. Makwembo confirmed that all leadership positions remain unchanged, asserting, “The leadership structure returns to its original status as it was prior to the meeting.”

He urged dissatisfied members to follow proper channels, stating, “Any grievances should be addressed to my office within 14 days of receiving this communication.”

The statement was copied to the National Chairman, Secretary General, Provincial Minister, Member of Parliament, and Chairman of Elections, underscoring the importance of adhering to party protocols.

The decision reflects Mr. Makwembo’s commitment to upholding the UPND constitution and ensuring discipline within the party’s ranks.

Nicki Minaj sued by former manager for alleged assault and emotional distress

Nicki Minaj is facing a lawsuit from Brandon Garrett, who claims to have served as her manager during her 2024 tour. Garrett alleges that the rapper physically assaulted him and caused emotional distress following an incident after her April concert in Detroit.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the lawsuit, filed by high-profile attorney Thomas Feher, details an explosive confrontation in Minaj’s dressing room. Garrett says he had been sent on an errand after the concert and was called into the dressing room upon his return, where Minaj was meeting with her team.

Garrett alleges that the 42-year-old rapper became enraged upon learning he had once delegated the task of picking up her prescription to someone else. He claims Minaj berated him, shouting, “Are you fing crazy having him pick up my prescription? You have lost your fing mind and if my husband were here, he would knock out your fing teeth. You’re a dead man walking. You just fed up your whole life and you will never be anyone, I’ll make sure of it.”

In his account, Garrett says the tirade escalated, with Minaj declaring his life was “over” before striking him on the side of his face with an open hand. He claims the blow caused his head to snap back, sending his hat flying.

Garrett further alleges that as Minaj’s security team moved in, she struck his wrist, causing him to drop documents he was holding. Minaj then reportedly ordered him out of the room, and he claims he retreated to a restroom, locking himself inside for hours in fear for his safety.

The lawsuit states that Garrett experienced physical pain in his face and wrist and was stranded in Detroit after being denied access to the tour bus heading back to Chicago.

Garrett is suing Minaj for assault, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, seeking damages for the alleged incident.

Nicki Minaj’s representatives have not yet commented on the lawsuit.

How Nike design engineer Logan Hickox started designing shoes for LeBron James and Simone Biles

0

Get to know Logan Hickox, a mechanical engineer who currently works as a Nike design engineer. A University of Florida graduate, Hickox has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

In an interview with Fast Company, he noted that he grew up loving sports and not engineering. He only got interested in engineering after seeing flyers at his school promoting a meeting for students interested in robotics. He joined the robotics team through the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST Robotics) program and went on to earn the prestigious FIRST Dean’s List Award in 2015, inspiring him to pursue mechanical engineering at the University of Florida.

“You have the notion that engineers might be of the nerdier type, or maybe they’re not athletic, or they’re not into theater, or whatever it might be,” he said to the outlet. “And especially as a Black man myself, not having seen that representation before, that was something that I was definitely apprehensive about at first. Being able to really push outside of my comfort zone and being able to see it’s not just one mold that people fit, that was something that was super eye-opening to me.”

In 2021, he was hired as a design engineer at Nike and subsequently got promoted to design engineer II. Before that, he had honed his skills through internships, including a design internship with the sports company.

“If you’re looking at a shoe, there’s a whole world of science that goes behind it,” he explained to Fast Company. “In the Bowerman Footwear Lab at Nike, it’s an innovation space. It’s a thinker space…,” he noted.

“So for me, being able to design these different components, I use a variety of different CAD programs. At Nike, prototyping is the name of the game, and what people don’t see is that you might have one pair of shoes, but really, what went behind it was hundreds of designs,” he added.

At Nike, Hickox collaborated on the design of Nike Air Max Dn USA, which was worn by the U.S. team at the 2024 Paris Olympics. “Seeing LeBron James and Simone Biles, the GOATs of their respective sports, wearing some of the shoes that I designed, that was incredible,” he expressed.

For the engineer, working with Nike was his wildest dream.

“Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would be working with Nike world headquarters. The biggest thing that I want to leave behind is just the legacy of, ‘Hey, you belong. Do you have opportunity here? Go chase it,’” he said.

Mnangagwa Elevates 35 Top Military Officers

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has promoted six colonels in the Zimbabwe National Army to the rank of Brigadier-General, just two days after elevating 27 Air Force of Zimbabwe officers.

The rapid promotions signal his intent to solidify control over the military and strengthen his grip on power.

The newly appointed Brigadier-Generals are Oscar Tshuma, Raban Nikisi, Benjamin Sabata, Passmore Taruodzera, Million Ndlovu, and Lawrence Munzararikwa.

These promotions follow the recent elevation of two Air Commodores, 11 Group Captains, and 16 Wing Commanders, though one Air Commodore and one Group Captain are currently on assignments abroad.

Both ceremonies were held at Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks in Harare, a venue steeped in military symbolism.

In just two days, Mnangagwa has promoted a total of 33 officers, a move analysts view as part of a broader strategy to consolidate power and neutralize threats from factions loyal to Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

Chiwenga, who played a key role in the 2017 coup that ousted Robert Mugabe and installed Mnangagwa, has seen his influence wane as Mnangagwa methodically dismantles his power base.

Many of Chiwenga’s allies, including Major General Sibusiso Moyo and former Air Force Commander Perrence Shiri, have either died under suspicious circumstances or been sidelined.

The recent promotions also reflect Mnangagwa’s efforts to build a military hierarchy loyal to his agenda.

This mirrors the strategies employed by Robert Mugabe, who relied on military loyalty to maintain power but ultimately fell victim to a coup.

Mnangagwa’s actions suggest plans to retain power indefinitely, undermining an alleged agreement for Chiwenga to succeed him after two terms.

With these calculated moves, Mnangagwa appears to be closing ranks, leaving little room for opposition within the military or his administration.

Jude Bellingham has shared his thoughts after leading Real Madrid to a thrilling comeback victory over Valencia on Friday, January 3.

The English midfielder proved decisive, netting a stoppage-time winner after Luka Modric had earlier cancelled out Hugo Duro’s opening goal.

Jude Bellingham inspires Madrid to comeback win
Bellingham’s influence on the game was evident from the second half.

In the 55th minute, he came close to equalising but watched in frustration as his well-placed penalty ricocheted off the post.

Just moments later, he delivered a perfectly timed pass to Kylian Mbappe, who found the net, only for VAR to rule the goal out for a marginal offside.

Despite these setbacks, the former Borussia Dortmund captain remained undeterred.

With Madrid trailing as the clock wound down, Bellingham delivered a near-identical pass to Luka Modric in the 85th minute.

The Croatian maestro made no mistake, firing a precise low shot into the bottom corner to restore parity.

The drama didn’t end there. Deep into added time, a defensive lapse by Valencia gave Bellingham the opportunity to seize the moment, per FOX Sports.

With clinical precision, he pounced to secure all three points for Los Blancos, capping a man-of-the-match performance.

Bellingham reacts after firing Madrid to victory
Speaking after the game, Bellingham reflected on his eventful night, particularly addressing the missed penalty that could have shifted the momentum earlier.

“When you’re wearing this shirt, you can’t ever give up,” he said, as quoted by the club’s website.
“When I missed the penalty, my teammates could have blamed me for it, but they got behind me, they consoled me.”

The midfielder also lauded the team’s grit, especially after Vinicius Junior’s dismissal.

“We showed Real Madrid’s character with 10 men. We stood up and picked up three huge points in the fight for La Liga,” he added.
Looking ahead
The victory not only sets the tone for the year but also reinforces Madrid’s determination in their pursuit of silverware.

Bellingham, who ended the match with a goal and an assist, will look to build on this performance as the team shifts focus to their Copa del Rey clash against Club Deportiva Minera.

With this win, Real Madrid continues to assert its presence at the top of La Liga, showcasing the resilience and depth needed to navigate a gruelling campaign. Bellingham, at the heart of it all, has already set a high standard for 2025.

Al Nassr Marks Ronaldo’s 2-Year Anniversary with Touching Video Tribute

0

Al Nassr shared a heartfelt video to commemorate Cristiano Ronaldo’s two-year anniversary with the club.

Ronaldo joined Al Nassr in the summer of 2023, making a surprising move to Saudi Arabia after a contentious departure from Manchester United, following a fallout with then-manager Erik ten Hag.

The Portuguese superstar signed with the reigning league champions to lead Saudi Arabia’s ambitious efforts to attract global talent to the Saudi Pro League.

Currently thriving in the league, the evergreen 39-year-old’s future remains uncertain.

According to Marca, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is open to exploring new opportunities and has no plans to retire anytime soon.

To mark his two-year milestone, Al Nassr released an emotional tribute video celebrating Ronaldo’s impact.

The video follows a fan’s dream of witnessing his idol play for his beloved team, concluding with a touching message of gratitude to the legendary forward.

What’s next for Ronaldo?
Ronaldo signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Al-Nassr upon joining the Saudi Pro League club.

That contract is set to expire at the end of the current season. As he approaches the final six months of his tenure at Al-Awwal Park, Ronaldo will soon be eligible to engage in discussions with other clubs.

Since arriving at Al-Nassr, Ronaldo has yet to guide the team to a Saudi Pro League title or secure any other major trophy.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is reportedly determined to claim some silverware before potentially leaving Saudi Arabia.

Ronaldo highlights Saudi League difficulty

Ronaldo previously emphasised the physical demands of playing in Saudi Arabia, citing the searing temperatures that test even the fittest athletes.

“Try to sprint in 38, 39, 40-degree weather and see…” he remarked, shedding light on an often-overlooked challenge faced by players in the Gulf region.
Such conditions add another layer of complexity to the league’s competitiveness.

Saudi Pro League: A destination for global stars
Since Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr in January 2023, the league has experienced an influx of world-class talent, including stars like Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kanté, Sadio Mané, Fabinho, and Neymar Junior.

This transformation has elevated the league’s profile, making it a destination for elite footballers seeking new challenges.

Ronaldo’s rates Saudi League ahead of Ligue 1

Ronaldo argues that the Saudi Professional League is more competitive than one of Europe’s top five leagues.

The Portuguese football icon currently plies his trade in the Middle East with Al-Nassr after two decades in Europe.

“BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR: THE BRUCE MWAPE SAGA”

“BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR: THE BRUCE MWAPE SAGA”

Not too long ago, the loudest voices in the terraces were calling for Bruce Mwape to pack his tactics and hit the road. “The talent is carrying the team!” they said. “Bruce, are you even watching the same game we are?” they asked during those two infamous legs against Ghana that had us looking like we’d accidentally fielded volleyball players instead and Ghana looked like they knew what they wanted, play football.

And yet, here we are. FAZ pulls the trigger and brings in Nora Hauptle, a coach who said had credentials and vision to match the Copper Queens’ potential, and suddenly, the very fans who wanted Bruce gone are asking, “Why FAZ, why?” It’s like ordering nshima, only to complain that the relish is too hot.

From where I’m standing, this is a bold and progressive move by FAZ, and it deserves applause. Let’s not forget how much the Copper Queens have brought to Zambian football coffers. Appointing someone of Hauptle’s caliber is a clear statement: Zambia is serious about raising the bar for women’s football.

Bruce Mwape’s legacy? Untouchable. His contributions are etched in history, and we’ll always respect what he achieved. But every good journey has its final whistle, and it’s time for a new chapter. Plus, let’s not overlook the elephant in the room: those constant international media controversies around Bruce. Sure, it didn’t seem like a big deal to some, but it was draining and distracting—for him, the team, and even us as fans.

Now, a woman coach for a women’s team? That’s a win in my book. No awkward propaganda battles, no off-pitch distractions—just football. And I truly hope Coach Florence sticks around to help Hauptle settle in. Continuity is key, and Florence has already proven she’s up to the task.

To the Copper Queens: adapt, focus, and let’s crush WAFCON. To FAZ: kudos for stepping up. And to the fans? Maybe next time, think twice before flipping the narrative like a pancake.

All in all, it’s a golden moment for Zambian football—whether some like it or not. Let’s keep the banter flowing, but don’t forget to celebrate progress.- Bwezani

I RESPECT FAZ DECISION – BRUCE MWAPE

I RESPECT FAZ DECISION – BRUCE MWAPE

Coach Bruce Mwape says he has accepted FAZ’s decision to replace him with Swiss national Nora Hauptle as the Zambia Senior women’s national football team coach.

FAZ on Saturday announced the appointment of Hauptle as Shepolopolo  coach on a three-year deal.

In an interview with the Mast Newspaper, Mwape said he is aware that FAZ has other plans for the Senior Women’s team.

“It’s always up to the appointing authority, just respect the decision they have made. Obviously they have other plans for the team and I can’t say it’s a bad decision, anyway. At the moment I can’t say much,” said Mwape.

He refused to say much on his removal from the Shepolopolo coaching bench.

“I have just learnt about that, it hasn’t been officially communicated to me. This has to be official. In the statement it says I am taking up a new role but I have not been communicated to,” he said. “I will give you a comment once that will reach me. I don’t know what they (FAZ) [have] got for me,” he said.

Mwape last year qualified Zambia to the 2025 Africa Cup.

He led the Team to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in France last Summer.

That was the second time Mwape was helping Zambia to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Mwape last year was nominated for the Coach of the Year at the inaugural 2023 COSAFA Awards.

He has in the past guided Zambia to winning Bronze at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup in Morocco.

That was the second time “ba Bruce” was taking the Zambia Women National Team to the Africa Cup.

Mwape is an experienced trainer who has in the past coached Nchanga Rangers, Roan United, Indeni and Konkola Mine Police.

He was named as the Best Women’s national coach in Africa in 2021.

Mwape was also named among the best three Women’s national coaches in Africa for 2022.

He qualified Zambia to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.

SADC leaders pushing for dialogue to end crisis in Mozambique

Regional leaders are pushing for dialogue to resolve Mozambique’s deadly post-election unrest as violence escalated in the aftermath of a ruling by the southern African country’s top court validating the outcome of the disputed October 2024 polls.

Mozambique descended into chaos after the opposition rejected the results of the October 9 polls, where ruling Frelimo party candidate Daniel Chapo was declared winner of the presidential vote.

Foreign and local observers said the presidential and parliamentary elections were marred by irregularities.

The main opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane has been leading protests that have paralysed the economy and led to the death of more than 150 people as well as the arrest of thousands of protesters.

Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders led by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are now pushing for a negotiated settlement to the electoral dispute, with Pretoria this week dispatching envoys to Mozambique to persuade the feuding parties to opt for dialogue.

On Tuesday, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is the chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, said the regional body was calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urgent dialogue.

“We are deeply concerned by the continued loss of lives, injuries, destruction of private property and public infrastructure,” President Samia said in a statement.

“The current situation has also caused significant economic challenges on the nation and disrupted cross border trade, and hindered the free movement of people. SADC calls upon all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from actions that escalate violence and unrest.”
She said the regional body was ready to facilitate a peaceful resolution to “the existing challenges”.

“We, therefore, appeal for an immediate cessation of all hostilities, while reiterating the importance of prioritising the well-being and livelihoods of Mozambican people,” President Samia said.

“SADC stresses all parties to embrace peaceful and constructive dialogue as the preferred avenue to address grievances. Our collective aspiration remains the restoration of harmony and stability in Mozambique, in line with our shared vision of good governance, social cohesion, and sustainable development in the region.”

Outgoing Mozambican President Fillipe Nyusi on Monday met leaders of opposition parties to explore the dialogue option, but Mr Mondlane was conspicuously absent, as he is in exile.

The runner-up in the presidential election was forced to flee Mozambique after two of his aides were shot on the streets of Maputo by unknown assailants in the early days of the protests.

Podemos, the party that backed Mr Mondlane’s candidacy, Nova Democracia, Renamo and MDM, whose leaders met President Nyusi, insisted on their position to reject the outcome of the polls, but said they were open to dialogue.

The latest statements are a major climbdown from the hard-line stance by Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa and current SADC chairperson, who last week said the bloc expected the opposition to accept the ruling by the Mozambique Constitutional Council on the polls and move on.

“SADC stands ready to assist the incoming government and the people of Mozambique in consolidating their electoral democracy on the basis of the aforesaid court decision, which should be held sacrosanct by all,” President Mnangagwa said in the statement.

South Africa, which has been affected the most by the crisis, with trade disruptions and an influx of Mozambicans escaping the unrest, said it had “noted with concern the ongoing violence and subsequent disruptive protests in reaction to the announcement” by the court.

“South Africa calls on all parties to commit to an urgent dialogue that will heal the country and set it on a new political and development trajectory,” Pretoria said in a statement issued by the Department of International Relations.

“Furthermore, South Africa is ready to assist Mozambique in any manner to facilitate this dialogue. South Africa calls on all parties to exercise restraint and calm.”

Stephen Chan, a political analyst based in London, said South Africa’s calls for dialogue to end the conflict were more practical.
“(President) Mnangagwa’s statement is following a literalist reading of law and legal procedure,” Prof Chan said. “It ignores violence, almost as if washing hands off a crisis in democratic expectations.”

“By contrast, the South African offer of facilitation of dialogue is far more statesmanlike and caring for the affected people of Mozambique.”

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC), which sent a delegation to Mozambique between December 16 and 18 to assess the situation, said the crisis in that country went beyond the recent disputed elections.

It urged President Mnangagwa to show leadership as SADC chairman by pushing for dialogue that would lead to a peaceful resolution of the political disputes.

“The (ZCC) delegation heard that the post-election demonstrations, which are mainly driven by youth and women, also point to issues beyond the current electoral process,” ZCC said in a statement.

“They point to underlying issues of high levels of cost of living and unemployment, lack of opportunities for young people and many other issues that are affecting the ordinary citizens.

“We call upon the government of Zimbabwe as the chairperson of SADC to use its influence in encouraging the government of Mozambique and all the political parties in Mozambique to come together and put the interests of the southern African region ahead.

“Mozambique is a key player (in the region), hence the continued political disturbances will have ripple effects on neighbouring countries, including Zimbabwe.”

The crisis in Mozambique, a country battered by unending civil wars and natural disasters over the years, has had ripple effects on its neighbours, especially those that are landlocked.

Countries such as South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia and Malawi recently sounded the alarm as the unrest took a toll on their economies.

Zimbabwean companies have also complained of logistical problems in transporting exports to Mozambique’s ports. Zambia, which is already facing significant electricity shortages due to a severe drought, said it lost 300 megawatts of imports from Mozambique “indefinitely “due to disruptions caused by the protests.

The country stopped generating electricity from its main hydropower station after water levels in Kariba Dam dropped drastically due to the drought.

Africa’s second-largest copper producer had turned to Mozambique to plug its electricity supply gap.

Eswatini said its sugar industry, a mainstay of the mountain kingdom’s economy, was struggling to export to the United States and European Union markets. The country’s sugar exporters depend on a terminal at the port of Maputo that is jointly owned by Eswatini, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

In Malawi, the disruption in the movement of cargo from Mozambique has hampered the transportation of fuel from the ports of Beira and Nacala.

The National Oil Company of Malawi said it had resorted to importing petroleum products through the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam, which complicated its efforts to end a fuel shortage that has stretched for several months.

South Africa has, on several occasions, been forced to close the strategic Lebombo border post with Mozambique due to the violence.

The region’s biggest economy is said to be losing more than $500,000 due to restricted movement of imports and exports through the Mozambican ports.

POLICE PRESS STATEMENT: SUDDEN AND UNNATURAL DEATH FROM FIRE INCIDENT – CHAISA POLICE POST

Lusaka, January 4, 2025

The Zambia Police Service, through Chaisa Police Post, received a report of a tragic fire incident that resulted in the sudden and unnatural deaths of four family members.

The report was filed today, January 4, 2025, at approximately 0220 hours by Grace Nyirenda, aged 35, of house number B320, Mandevu Compound.

According to the report, her grandmother, Iled Phiri, aged 67, and three grandchildren, Eunice Ngoma, aged 23, Ireen Tembo, aged 34, and Blessings Mpalo, aged 17, all of the same household in Chaisa Compound, were burnt to death after their house caught fire at approximately 0130 hours.

Initial investigations reveal that the deceased Iled Phiri, the homeowner, retired to bed on the evening of yesterday January 3, 2025 at approximately 1900 hours, leaving the door unlocked and a candle lit due to a power outage. Her three grandchildren reportedly left the house to drink at Waleta Bar in Chaisa.

At approximately midnight, the grandchildren were seen leaving the bar, intoxicated, and returned home. They failed to extinguish the lit candle before going to bed. Subsequently, the candle is suspected to have ignited a fire that gutted the house. Tragically, all four family members were burnt and died on the spot.

Neighbors who noticed smoke coming from the house alerted other residents and informed the police. The Fire Brigade was also called and managed to extinguish the fire. Upon visiting the scene, police found the four bodies burnt beyond recognition.

The deceased have been identified as follows:

Iled Phiri aged 67 – Grandmother and homeowner.
Eunice Ngoma aged 23 – Granddaughter.
Ireen Tembo aged 34 – Granddaughter.
Blessings Mpalo aged 17 – Granddaughter.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary, pending postmortem examinations.

An Inquiry File has been opened, and investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances leading to the fire.

The Zambia Police Service urges the public to exercise caution when using open flames such as candles, especially during power outages, and to ensure proper safety measures are followed to prevent such tragedies.

THE EXPERIENCE OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN ZAMBIA

*THE EXPERIENCE OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN ZAMBIA*

By Chali Mashambe
*31st December, 2024*

Freedom of speech in Zambia has gone through a lot of changes, influenced by different governments and social changes. This journey can be divided into key historical phases, each with its own challenges and important events.

*Colonial Era: Northern Rhodesia* : During the colonial period, Zambia, then known as Northern Rhodesia, people couldn’t speak freely. The government controlled all the newspapers and stopped any publications that criticized them. Public gatherings and protests were restricted under the Public Order Acts, making it hard for citizens to express their dissent.

The British South Africa Company controlled Northern Rhodesia with force. This made many local people angry and resistant. While the colonial government built roads and schools, they also suppressed local cultures and voices, causing long-term problems.

*Post-Independence: Kenneth Kaunda’s UNIP (1964-1991)* : After gaining independence in 1964, Zambia promised more freedoms. However, the early years of independence were marked by political repression. The Kaunda administration controlled the media strictly and used laws to silence dissent. The Public Order Act (POA) was used to stop public gatherings and free speech, often claiming “security concerns.”

While the government focused on nation-building and economic development, the suppression of dissent stopped political diversity and led to a one-party state, limiting democratic participation.

*Movement for Multiparty Democracy: Frederick Chiluba’s MMD (1991-2002)* : The transition to multiparty democracy in the early 1990s was a significant turning point for freedom of speech in Zambia. The Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD), led by Frederick Chiluba, came to power in 1991, promising greater political freedoms. Censorship laws were relaxed, and a more vibrant civil society emerged, facilitating broader access to information and encouraging public participation in political processes.

The introduction of multiparty democracy led to greater political competition and independent media. However, the transition period was marked by political instability and economic challenges.

*The Patriotic Front (PF), led by Michael Sata, came to power in 2011.* :  While there were some improvements in media freedom, challenges remained. The PF government was criticized for its handling of media freedom and freedom of expression. Several journalists and political figures were arrested under the defamation law, which was later repealed recently by the UPND Government.

*During Edgar Lungu’s term from January 25, 2015, to August 21, 2021,* :  the situation worsened. The Public Order Act was used to restrict public gatherings and protests, leading to arbitrary arrests and detentions. Defamation laws were used to silence critics and journalists. Journalists and opposition leaders were often charged with criminal defamation for criticizing the President or government policies.

*Improvements Under Hakainde Hichilema (2021-present)* :
Under President Hakainde Hichilema, the United Party for National Development (UPND) has made significant improvements in promoting freedom of speech. The defamation of the President law was repealed, and there has been a commitment to media freedom. The government has also worked with the media and civil society to create a more transparent and open society.

Additionally, the Public Order Act was reformed to reduce restrictions on public gatherings and protests. The President has actively engaged with the media, including featuring on private media interviews and inviting journalists to state functions. Efforts are ongoing to pass the Access to Information Bill and amend the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) Act to further promote media freedom.

President Hichilema’s administration has also taken steps to end tribalism and promote unity. The government has ensured that appointments to the Cabinet include people from all ten provinces of the country, reinforcing the “One Zambia, One Nation” motto. Opposition parties are now able to wear their regalia freely and hold gatherings without fear of intimidation. The administration has also promoted freedom of assembly and speech, allowing for a more inclusive and democratic society.

The journey of freedom of speech in Zambia has been marked by periods of repression and progress. From the colonial era to the present day, the struggle for free expression has been constant. While significant strides have been made, the journey is far from over. The continued efforts of the government, civil society, and the media are essential to ensuring that freedom of speech remains a cornerstone of democracy in Zambia.

This story of evolving freedom of speech is crucial for the new generation to understand, as it highlights the progress made and the challenges still faced. The journey has been shaped by the efforts of many who fought for greater freedoms and by the policies of successive governments. It serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting and promoting free expression in a democratic society.

Chelsea Fans Blame Jackson For Crystal Palace Draw

0

Chelsea fans have taken to social media to blast Nicolas Jackson following his poor performance in the disappointing 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

The Blues continued their poor run of form in the Premier League, failing to win their last four games against Everton, Fulham, Ipswich, and Crystal Palace.

Cole Palmer gave the visitors the lead in the 13th minute before Philippe Mateta restored parity for Crystal Palace in the 82nd minute to snatch a late point for the hosts.

Maresca’s men dominated possession in the encounter but they failed to kill off the game with Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson particularly at fault for missing three clear chances

The club’s supporters have voiced their discontent on social media following Jackson’s wastefulness in front of goal.

Ejikem revealed that Jackson is not an elite striker, demanding that the club needs an elite forward.

He wrote on X: Jackson is simply not an elite striker. Chelsea fans who keep insisting he’s perfect for the team piss me off, he puts in some brilliant performances here & there but is not trustworthy. We need a proper striker, an elite marksman. I’m tired.”

JinnCFC wrote on X: Jackson is not a striker who wins you a title, poor Finishing, lack of vision in the box, poor technical ability, poor position, poor decision-making. We need a proper 9.

CFC Blessed wrote on X: “Nicolas Jackson is the one who cost us the 3 points today, he had a lot of chances to score a goal and he couldn’t even shoot on goal, terrible performance and it looks like he went back to factory settings.”

Sporty Vibe called on Chelsea to sign Osimhen to replace Jackson.

He wrote on X: New year, same old Chelsea, We are so good at keeping our opponent alive in every game. We screw up by not converting our chances and this is going on for years. We deserve this. Sell Jackson ASAP and go for Osimhen or a top striker.”

Precee wrote on X: “Jackson is a backup striker not lead in any top club. I don’t understand what Chelsea is doing regarding getting an elite consistent and clinical striker. He caused us three points today.”

Faysal wrote on X: Jackson needs to come out and apologise for this, the game should’ve been over by the 60th minute. Four games in a row Chelsea have chances but can’t finish their chances.”

Garnet didn’t hold back in his criticism, comparing Jackson’s shooting ability to a 10-year-old boy.

He wrote on X: “A striker that doesn’t jump for balls, doesn’t shoot with his left leg, has the shot power of a 10-year-old boy, doesn’t have any box presence, doesn’t hustle.”

Chelsea failed to hit the target with any of their six shots in the second half before Mateta brought Crystal Palace back into the game.

The Blues have gone from being touted as a title contender in December to struggling to win matches, which could dampen their Champions League qualification hopes.

Maresca’s men will be back in Premier League action against Bournemouth on January 14, three days after taking on Morecambe in the FA Cup.

SOCIALIST PARTY RUBBISHES ‘UPND-SPONSORED’ OPINION POLLS

SOCIALIST PARTY RUBBISHES ‘UPND-SPONSORED’ OPINION POLLS

….they are not only fake and manupilative but a desperate move by the UPND to deceive Zambians says Hapunda

Lusaka… Saturday January 4, 2025

ZAMBIANS should ignore the fake and manupilative opinion polls sponsored by the ruling UPND through the Kenyan firm that they have hired to do image building for President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration ahead of the 2026 general elections, the Socialist Party (SP) has said.

Chief Advisor to the party President Brian Hapunda says the recently conducted online opinion poll in which President Hichilema emerged as the preferred presidential candidate was not only fake and manupilative but also a desperate move by the UPND to deceive Zambians.

Mr. Hapunda was reacting to an opinion poll that was conducted on Facebook, dubbed, “If elections were called today, who would you vote for?” in which the results favored Hichilema.

“The SP is aware of the fake and manipulate polls that are ran and sponsored by the UPND Government through their hired Kenyan firm to do an image building for President Hakainde Hichilema and his administration ahead of 2026 general elections,” Mr. Hapunda said.

He said the UPND-led Government should not fool itself as the sponsored fake pools will not help its dwindling popularity.

He said there was need for the UPND-led administration to learn from the past experiences of previous governments, which relied on deceptive opinion polls to create an illusion of public support.

He noted that these tactics ultimately led to significant challenges for those administrations during elections.

He further stressed that rather than focusing on these manipulated metrics, the UPND should concentrate on delivering the campaign promises made to the Zambian people before the 2021 general elections.

Mr. Hapunda pointed out that the primary opposition to the UPND Government and President Hichilema stems from the rising cost of living, which has impacted the majority of households.

He observed that many citizens have already made up their minds to oppose the UPND Government, asserting that no amount of manipulated opinion polls will dissuade the Zambian populace, who are eager for regime change in the upcoming elections.

Mr. Hapunda highlighted that the UPND Government has presented three national budgets so far, with only one remaining before the general elections on 13th August 2026, and expressed skepticism regarding the effectiveness of the final budget in addressing the economic challenges faced by the country.

The drunken police officer who freed 13 suspects to celebrate New Year: another perspective – Sishuwa  Sishuwa

The drunken police officer who freed 13 suspects to celebrate New Year: another perspective

By Sishuwa  Sishuwa

Much has been said, in both local and international media, about the case of a drunken police officer who freed 13 suspects from custody so that they could go and celebrate the new year. Detective inspector Titus Phiri released the suspects from a police station who were accused of crimes such as assault, robbery and burglary. They are all currently on the run and a manhunt has been launched to find them.

The fundamental issue here is not about the actions of an allegedly drunk police officer who freed 13 suspects from custody on New Year’s Eve. It is about the continued violations of the rights of suspects by the State.

Under Zambian law, the police are required to charge suspects with a known offence and either release them on bond or present them before court within 48 hours. In practice, the police have kept suspects in detention, often without charge, for several weeks and sometimes months. This is not only unlawful but also a violation of human rights.

The more than dozen individuals whom the officer helped to escape were not prisoners but suspects arrested for different offences that are bailable. Why were the suspects still in the police holding cell long after their arrest? Why were they not charged and either released on bond or taken to court where they could take plea and apply for bail? This incident is not isolated. It is part of a wider disrespect for the law by the police, one that has seen individuals being arrested and either kept in detention without being taken to court or taken to court where the state imposes punitive bail conditions.

Take the example of Francis Kapwepwe, popularly known as Why Me. A 29-year old blogger, Kapwepwe was arrested in April 2024 on the Copperbelt and transferred to Livingstone, Southern Province, about 800 kilometres away, where he has neither relatives nor friends. Police stated that although Kapwepwe lives in Kitwe, the person who filed the complaint against him was based in Mazabuka, Southern Province. He was kept in detention without charge for four months and, following public uproar, was finally taken to court in August 2024.

Kapwepwe, an ethnic Bemba, was ultimately charged with hate speech against the Tonga-speaking people of Southern Province. The charge arose from comments he made in a Facebook video that President Hakainde Hichilema, Zambia’s first Tonga-speaking president, had performed so poorly and divided the country to such an extent that voters are unlikely to vote for another Tonga in future. These remarks were interpreted by the complainant, a Tonga speaker, as hate speech, an offence legally defined as the act of expressing or showing hatred, ridicule or contempt for persons because of race, tribe, place of origin or colour. Conviction for hate speech carries a two-year prison sentence.

After he pleaded not guilty to the charge, the presiding magistrate imposed a cash bail of K10,000 and two working sureties as conditions for his release from custody. The blogger has been unable to meet these bail conditions. In effect, Kapwepwe has been in prison since April last year, serving a sentence before trial commences and before he is convicted by any court of law. His case is a perfect illustration of the plight of the poor when it comes to accessing justice in Zambia.

Although their freedom came from an unlikely saviour, the 13 suspects who were freed by a drunken police officer represent hundreds of ordinary Zambians who continue to languish in detention for petty crimes that attract police bond or are bailable. In Zambia, poor people in state custody and even in prisons are treated poorly and ignored by many. The drunk cop has merely opened a small window into these abuses which have been going on for a long time.

SOUTH KOREA IN CRISIS AS MILITARY AND POLICE DIFFER.

A Seoul court has granted a warrant to detain Yoon Suk Yeol on insurrection charges

Officers from South Korea’s Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) attempted to execute an arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol early Friday but were blocked by military personnel serving under the Presidential Security Service (PSS), according to Yonhap News Agency.

The incident unfolded at Yoon’s residence, where the military unit presumed to be from the 55th Security Brigade has allegedly been deployed to block the warrant against Yoon, escalating tensions surrounding this unprecedented action against a sitting president, Yonhap wrote on Friday.

Thousands of Yoon’s supporters gathered near his home, complicating the arrest attempts. On Thursday, about 30 protesters were forcibly removed after breaking through a police barrier and clashing with officers, as reported by Yonhap.

A Seoul court issued the warrant against Yoon on Tuesday, charging him with masterminding the December 3 martial law declaration, orchestrating an insurrection, and abusing power. The CIO received the warrant after Yoon ignored three summons to appear for questioning regarding these charges.

“We have begun executing a detention warrant for President Yoon,”the CIO stated to the press outside the president’s residence earlier on Friday when authorities attempted to arrest the impeached leader again.
Yoon has vowed to“fight to the end to protect this country”in a message to his supporters earlier this week.

Yoon’s lawyer claimed that if police tried to carry out the arrest warrant on behalf of the CIO, the PSS would have the authority to arrest them for abuse of power and obstruction, according to Yonhap. The impeached president’s legal team has filed for an injunction against the warrant, calling it“illegal,”the newspaper reported.

Police warned that if the PSS or Yoon’s supporters attempt to prevent CIO officials from executing the arrest, they would face detention on obstruction charges.
While Yoon has presidential immunity, it does not extend to charges of insurrection or treason. He declared martial law on December 3 and sent troops into the South Korean Parliament. Videos from that night showed masked, armed, and armored soldiers facing off against lawmakers who opposed them with fire extinguishers as parliament prepared to vote on a measure to legally resist the president’s orders.

South Korean lawmakers overturned the martial law by parliamentary vote within six hours of its imposition. Yoon was subsequently suspended from his duties following an impeachment vote on December 14.

Last week, interim President Han Duck-soo, who assumed office after Yoon’s suspension, was also impeached for refusing to appoint justices to the Constitutional Court. This appointment is necessary to finalize Yoon’s impeachment process. South Korean Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok stepped in as the country’s interim president last Friday.

GUARDIOLA ACCEPTS BLAME FOR MAN CITY POOR FORM

GUARDIOLA ACCEPTS BLAME FOR MAN CITY POOR FORM

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he blames himself for the club’s awful run of form.

City, who have won the Premier League title for the past four years and in six of the past seven, are 14 points behind leaders Liverpool.

A 2-0 win at Leicester on Sunday was only their second victory in 14 matches.

It is the worst run of a hugely successful managerial career taking in spells at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

“There are many, many things [involved in being a manager] and I missed something – something I am not doing well,” said Guardiola, who has been at the club for nine seasons.

“In the end, when you lose a lot of games it is an incredible responsibility for the manager to take. There is something the team needs and confidence and I was not able to do it.

“The call is on me first, it’s not the players. They naturally drop a little bit and that is normal. It happened a little bit last season as well.”

City have had slow starts to seasons before – and trailed the leaders by six points or more in each of the past four title-winning campaigns – but they have never been this bad.

“With this consistency [of results] I should have found it, and that is why we’re in this position,” Guardiola said.

“I blame [myself]. It’s not to say, ‘oh how nice is Pep’ – it’s the truth. I lead that group of players and I could not lift them. This is the reality.”

City have suffered many injuries this season – including to Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder Rodri – which Guardiola has repeatedly highlighted.

“We were the only unbeaten team in Europe [until 30 October] and top of the league, but immediately we went down, for injuries, many things we’ve talked about,” he said.

“But, even with that, I should have found a way to get better results.”

FAZ APPOINTS HAUPTLE AS NEW COPPER QUEENS COACH

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed Swiss national Nora Hauptle as Copper Queens coach on a three year deal.

FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga says Hauptle had been hired to consolidate on the gains made in the women’s game.

“We are excited to announce the appointment of Nora Hauptle as the new Zambia Women National Team coach. We have every reason to believe that she has the pedigree and profile that will take us to the next level,” says Kamanga.

“Her duty is to consolidate on the gains made in our women’s game in the last few years that has seen us win bronze at the WAFCON, qualify to a maiden FIFA World Cup in 2023 and back-to-back Olympic qualifications.”

The former Swiss defender is expected to be unveiled soon.

The new Copper Queens coach had a distinguished career as a defender in Europe and represented Switzerland at international level before retiring in 2009.

She took up coaching and notably drilled SC Sand in the German Frauen-Bundesliga, in 2020, where she was, at the time, the only female coach in the league. Hauptle left SC Sand in 2021 before being appointed Black Queens coach in 2022.

Kamanga says Hauptle’s predecessor Bruce Mwape will be re-assigned in a different capacity in the developmental teams.
“We also wish to thank Bruce Mwape for the work done since his appointment in 2018 which has seen the team qualify to the World Cup and two Olympics (Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024). He remains a core member of our wider technical development program as we secured a CAF Pro License course for him as part of our collaboration with the Royal Morocco Federation. He will become the second Zambian coach to undertake the CAF Pro License after Wedson Nyirenda,” he says.

The Copper Queens have already qualified for the 2024 WAFCON (to be played in July 2025) that takes place in Morocco.

SIMON MWEWA ACCUSES PF OF THREATENING TO P0UNCE ON HIM IF HE ATTENDS DANDY CRAZY’S FUNERAL

SIMON MWEWA ACCUSES PF OF THREATENING TO P0UNCE ON HIM IF HE ATTENDS DANDY CRAZY’S FUNERAL

By Beatrice Chabaya

Vlogger Simon Mwewa has raised serious concerns about his safety, alleging that the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) party plans to target him if he attends the funeral of the late Zambian artist Dandy Crazy. In a live video streamed today, Mr. Mwewa expressed his fears, saying he believes the PF might “pøunce” on him at the event due to his previous remarks regarding Zambian artists.

He said that his comments have been politicized, and so the PF would want to take advantage of that and target him, just because he seems to be anti-them.

He stated that Dandy Crazy was one of the funniest guys he had ever heard.

“It’s just that my comments bruised a lot of people, and unfortunately, a lot of guys have taken a political stance, and my comment now has turned political. Because there are a lot of PF guys who would love to see me at Dandy Crazy’s funeral, so that they can mete out vi0lence against me, because they consider me to be anti-them, and so they would love to use this situation as an excuse to mete out vi0lence against me”, he said.

“But you know, I’m not going to do that. I would never go to a place where I’m not welcome, because you end up being bèatèn. So, no, whether I go or not, I’m still a man, only kǐds will fall for it and go just because people are saying if I’m a man I’ll go. No I’m 55 years old, not 19, and I’m wise”

He also stated that he had no regrets over the post he made, further stating that Zambians do not like to hear the truth, hence their anger towards him.

“I have no regrets about what I said. The truth is often unwelcome, especially when it concerns our artists, Zambians don’t like being told the truth, and my comments were not specifically about Dandy Crazy, they were about a broader issue regarding our music industry.”

Mr Mwewa had previously stirred controversy by describing some Zambian artists as “drǔnkârds,” a statement he firmly stood by in his latest video.

He clarified that his intention was never to target Dandy Crazy, whom he described as “a jovial and one of the most comical people I have ever encountered.

WHAT A WORLD OF TWO FACES, LESSON LEARNT FROM DANDY CRAZY’S DEATH

WHAT A WORLD OF TWO FACES, LESSON LEARNT FROM DANDY CRAZY’S DEATH…

One important lesson I have drawn from the tragic accident and passing of Dandy Crazy is that what you produce  doesn’t seem to matter the most compared to who you impact!

On the same day Dandy Crazy was involved in a fatal accident, a renowned Professor of Engineering also lost his life in a similar road traffic incident if not at the same incident.

While two or so images of the professor circulated briefly on social media, it is likely that only about 10% of this platform’s members are even aware of his name or passing.

President Hakainde Hichilema shared a message of recovery for Dandy Crazy and later offered condolences to his family.

Yet, upon reviewing the president’s Facebook page, there was no mention of the professor—a senior citizen who contributed significantly to shaping the engineering field in Zambia.

In addition, the BBC reported Dandy Crazy’s death on all their platforms, including social media, their website, radio, and television.

Meanwhile, the Zambian government, through the Ministry of Arts, covered all funeral costs for Dandy Crazy.

Surprisingly, the Ministry of Education failed to recognize the professor’s passing, and it appears that even a message of condolence was not sent.

Troubling questions arise: Was his passing unnoticed? Or was it deemed less significant? Or a musician who has more impact on the nation than a professor?

Question: What type of contribution must one make to be recognized as an important figure in Zambia?

To be clear, this is not about diminishing any loss; every death is painful.

However, out of curiosity, one might wonder: whose accomplishments weigh more heavily on the scales of national impact—a professor who educated and mentored generations of engineers, or a musician?

I am aware that different offices and roles carry varying levels of visibility and privilege and my opinion is open to correction.

However, this situation leaves us with much to reflect upon about our values and the recognition we give to those who shape our nation.

VEDANTA HAS FAILED TO RESUSCITATE  KCM, GOVERNMENT MUST FIND ANOTHER INVESTOR TO RUN THE MINE OPTIMALLY- (AIPAC)

VEDANTA HAS FAILED TO RESUSCITATE  KCM, GOVERNMENT MUST FIND ANOTHER INVESTOR TO RUN THE MINE OPTIMALLY- (AIPAC)

Lusaka… Saturday January 4, 2025

It is evidently clear that Vedanta Resources Ltd has lamentably failed to resuscitate Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) Plc and fuifil their investment commitments made prior to them taking over the operations of the mine.

We wish to remind Vedanta Resources over the promises they made before taking over KCM among them injecting over US$1 billion into KCM for  mining development and recapitalization , improving copper communities through implementation of corporate social responsibility programs and creating of Job and business opportunities as well as clearing off payment to all the suppliers and contractors

We believe that if the 1billion USD was pumped into the operations of KCM, by now the mining giant would have created several jobs and business opportunities for the local people. By now, production at KCM would have doubled but it is still struggling as if there is no investor to manage the asset.

It is sad that up to date, no meaningful jobs and business opportunities have been created at the mine leaving the many youths who had hope in the asset vulnerable as they are still struggling to find jobs. It is clear that Vedanta has failed to invest in the asset as promised. Therefore, we believe that the government should start looking for another investor to run the mine as Vedanta is not equal to the task.

As stakeholders, we need to help President Hakainde Hichilema to resuscitate Konkola Copper Mine and create the much needed jobs and business opportunities for our fellow Zambians. The Head of State means well for the asset and we believe that he wants Konkola Copper Mine to make a vital contribution towards the 3Million metric tonnes copper production target per annum by 2031 but the choice of the investor is what is killing and destroying the asset.

It is critical at this moment that the government finds another equity partner to manage KCM optimally. We need to see a lot of economic activities on the Copperbelt, which will also see increased trade and commerce within and beyond the Province.

We believe that KCM is a critical national asset and the people of Zambia must benefit from it. At the moment, the mine seems as though it’s on autopilot when the government had found an investor to manage it. Vedanta has failed, hence the need to look for another investor to run the asset optimally.

Let’s not continue wasting time with Vedanta Resources who have practically failed to revamp the mine. As a country we must be in a hurry to develop our country by way of increasing productivity and earn the much needed foreign exchange and stabilize our local currency.

With the huge global demand for copper, we must up our game so that we benefit from the sale of our commodity at the international market and alleviate the high poverty levels in our country.

Our position is that KCM can only operate optimally with an another investor not the current one. We need an investor with a huge financial muscle and technical capacity to firmly manage the mine.

In conclusion, we call on President Hichilema to take a proactive action and find a proper exit plan for Vedanta Resources so that we can begin to engage another investor.

It is sad to note that with the condusive environment created by government with tax relief, Vedanta Resources is failing to increase production and revamping the mine.

We therefore call upon Copperbelt Minister and Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe to side with the people of the Copperbelt and find another investor.

Nchanga South UPND Member of Parliament Derrick Chilundika had warned us that Vedanta was a bad investor to take over KCM, now we can see what he meant. We shall engage President Hakainde Hichilema so that Vedanta should pack and leave our mining asset to pave way for a right investor with the financial and technical capacity to  recapitalize the mining firm so that it can positively start contributing to the social economic development of our country.

For Thomas Kaluba, popularly known as Tommy D, the loss of Dandy Krazy whose government name is Wesley Chibambo is deeply personal, as he recalls the bond they shared and the profound influence Dandy Krazy had on his life and career.

Speaking about their relationship to Kalemba, Tommy  D described Dandy as more than just a colleague.

“To me, Dandy Krazy was like an elder brother. His death is shocking and saddening. He was an inspiration, not just to the industry but to me personally. Sometimes, when I felt my music wasn’t making sense, I would look at him. Music was natural to him, it was who he was.” Tommy D shared.

He reflected on the unpredictability of life, noting how Dandy Krazy’s passing has left a void that can never be filled in the music industry.

“I was in Mpika when I  woke up to the heartbreaking news, and we’re still in disbelief. Life is truly unpredictable. We don’t know when our time will come, but losing someone like him feels like losing a part of ourselves.”

Beyond the music, Dandy was a mentor and a source of strength for many in the industry.

“He paved the way for so many of us, especially on the Copperbelt. He introduced the Jerabos and ‘Kopala Swag’ to the world. For us musicians, he was someone we could always look up to,” Tommy added.

As friends and colleagues mourn, Tommy D said artiste are all making plans to ensure that Dandy has a proper send-off and that his memory is remembered.

“His family is in our prayers, and we will continue to celebrate his legacy,” said Tommy D.

Zulu King Misuzulu KaZwelithini Files For Divorce From One Of His Wives, Offers R20,000 Monthly Support

King Misuzulu KaZwelithini has taken the significant step of filing for divorce against one of his wives. This marks a historic moment, as it is the first time in over two centuries of Zulu history that a monarch has initiated a divorce.

Having ascended the throne in May 2021 after a contentious dispute with his brother, Prince Simakade Zulu, King Misuzulu, who is married to three wives, is seeking to end his marital relationship with one of them.

Details of the Divorce Filing By King Misizulu
The divorce petition, which was reportedly submitted discreetly to the Pietermaritzburg High Court in KwaZulu-Natal, outlines the marriage breakdown. The documents, which have been reviewed by the African Times, provide an in-depth explanation from the King regarding the “irreparable collapse” of the union.

The King mentioned that the marriage had faced numerous challenges, and despite multiple attempts to reconcile, the relationship ultimately ended. He noted that they had lived apart for over a year before the divorce proceedings.

Historic Context: The Zulu King’s Divorce
This event holds particular significance as it marks the first instance in the 209-year history of the Zulu monarchy where a king has divorced his wife. This event is being closely watched as it may set a precedent for future royal decisions.

In the filing, the King stated that the marriage had deteriorated to a point where reconciliation was no longer possible, with no viable future for restoring the relationship. He emphasized that the couple had not shared a home as husband and wife for a period exceeding a year before the divorce filing was made.

Financial Arrangement and Maintenance Proposal
As part of the divorce settlement, King Misuzulu has proposed a monthly maintenance allowance of R20,000 for his wife for one year following the finalization of the divorce. This provision is intended to support his wife as she navigates the post-divorce period.

In addition to the maintenance offer, the King mentioned that the couple had already divided their personal belongings and assets. He assured the court that no significant shared assets or liabilities would require further division.

The legal proceedings surrounding this divorce are handled by Donda Attorneys, based in Durban, representing King Misuzulu. On the other hand, the wife is represented by Cavanagh and Richards Attorneys.

Given the sensitivity of the matter, particularly about the family’s privacy, details regarding the wife’s identity have been withheld.
