Why a Coup won’t work in Modern-Day Nigeria

By Tony Ogunlowo

In the runup to the October 1st Independence celebrations Sahara Reporters leaked a story that a bloody coup aimed at destabilizing , and overthrowing, the democratic government of President Tinubu had been thwarted.

There is still no official confirmation of this todate even though top service chiefs have been replaced and more than 40 officers have been arrested by the DSS who allegedly have had them under surveillance since August 2024.

Nigeria is a different country to the way it was in the 60s, 70s and 80s when anybody, presumably any disgruntled junior officer, could just pick up a gun, overthrow the incumbents, become Head of State and start their dictatorships: Africa, and mostly certainly Nigeria, have moved on from the Abachas and Idi-Amins of the past.

A military junta coming into power will abolish all laws and will rule by degree, so it’ll be a question of them shouting ‘jump’ and the people going ‘how high?’. Nigerians have long evolved beyond this and it’ll only bring out the people , en-masse, to protest. And as we’ve seen from previous mass protests, such as #ENDSARS, it’s not easy to crush the will of the people anymore. No more are they scared of a soldier with a gun. And with SM to pass the word around and keep everyone up to date; a medium even the junta can’t control or shut down completely as we’ve seen when the Buhari-led government tried shutting down Twitter usage in Nigeria, people just used VPNs to get around the ban. So a government overall control of the media is out of the question.

Nigerians have tasted the freedom of democracy, however imperfect it may be, and a return to a repressive military will not be welcomed with open arms: people now have the right to elect whoever they want to rule them instead of having somebody imposed upon them.

For a military coup to be successful the military will have to coral the people into a pen they can control: this can work in countries like Mali or Niger where the entire populace is less than the population of Lagos state. In Nigeria, a country of more than 200 million souls plus, the military is already stretched beyond its limits fighting insurgencies in the North and South-East so a new military junta won’t have the might – or equipment – to control the country successfully.

Mali and Niger armed forces removed democratically elected Presidents and their governments on the grounds of absolute abuse of office. Some will argue that the same should happen in Nigeria.

Whilst I’m not a big fan of President Tinubu it’s got to be said he’s been in power for less than two years and he inherited a mess from Buhari who in turn inherited it from Jonathan, who….need I go back any further? Logically thinking, anybody coming into power, military or civilian, will not have the power to change things overnight, as the people want, and the hardship will continue. For those old enough to remember when the Buhari/Idiagbon junta ousted Shehu Shagari from power in 1983 change did not happen overnight: it was a gradual undertaking and things weren’t as bad as they are now. So a military junta coming in will just huff and puff without getting anything done. And to make matters worse the international community will be watching and will impose extremely tough sanctions upon the nation in effect crippling all business transactions in and out of the country. And if they go as far as declaring an oil embargo and call in all loans obtained, the country will be finished. Further more ECOWAS, the OAU – including President Trump’s USA – may decide on a military intervention to forcibly remove the junta from power because democracy can not be seen to fail in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, as it has in Mali,Niger and elsewhere.( – and don’t forget Trump is looking for any excuse to bomb ‘disgraced’ Nigeria anyway!). If people think life under Tinubu is hard, then it’ll become unbearable.

In an earlier article ( “Are Coups in Africa still a Good thing?) I did point out that if we are going to practice democracy the African way there should be provision to remove inept and corrupt leaders the African way (aka a coup d’etat). Without sounding like I’m contradicting myself, people like the late Robert Mugabe needed a palace coup to remove him from office ( – as may well Paul Biya of Cameroon) for the systematic abuse of the democratic process that kept him in power. The same can be said also of the autocratic democracies of Niger, Mali etc who were also overthrown by the military. But the question is, as I pointed out then, is where do you draw the line?

Nigeria is still a fledgling democracy, I say is still in its infancy and mistakes will be made as we learn as once did the great democracies of the Western world: we are going to screw things up, abuse things but eventually we’ll get it right ( – whenever that might be!) as they say Rome wasn’t built in a day. Allowing the boys in khaki back will just send us back to square one and all the efforts of those who fought for modern-day democracy in Nigeria, like MKO, would have been in vain.

So the idea that a semi-illiterate gun-totting ‘who-build-dis-garda’ Army General seizes power and miraculously restores the country to its former glory, overnight, is not going to happen. It’s simply against the Law of Averages.

Stephen A. Smith disagrees with Michelle Obama suggesting America isn’t ready for a female president

tephen A. Smith is not on the same page with Michelle Obama regarding her suggestion that America is “not ready” to have a female as president.

This comes after Obama, 61, touched on the topic while she was addressing a crowd of women at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Friday, November 14, to promote her new book, The Look, Fox News reported.

To justify her claim that Americans are “not ready” for a female occupying the country’s highest seat, Obama made mention of Donald Trump being elected over Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

“As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready,” the former first lady said. “That’s why I’m like, ‘Don’t even look at me about running, because you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman. You are not.’”

Obama also stated that she feels a lot of men in America do not like the idea of being led by a woman. “You know, we’ve got a lot of growing up to do, and there’s still, sadly, a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman, and we saw it,” Obama said.

But Smith, 58, on Monday’s episode of Straight Shooter, begged to differ as he mentioned female lawmakers who were recently elected, stating it was to show that Americans do not have any issues with having women at the helm of political affairs. The television personality and sports analyst also buttressed his point by referring to New York Governor Kathy Hochul and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election.

“Didn’t we just see an election take place last month where a woman won the gubernatorial seat in New Jersey — Mikie Sherrill? Didn’t we just see Abigail Spanberger win in Virginia — the gubernatorial seat? Isn’t Kathy Hochul the governor of New York? Am I missing something?” Smith questioned. “Maybe I need to go back to the 2016 election with Hillary Rodham Clinton. Didn’t she win the popular vote in the United States?”

Though Trump won the 2016 presidential election, he lost the popular vote to Clinton by a 2.9 million margin, Fox News reported. “What do you mean we weren’t ready?” Smith said in reference to Clinton’s feat.

“Weren’t there White women who voted for Donald Trump? Not just White men. Didn’t the Blacks show up for Hillary Rodham Clinton? Didn’t Hispanics show up for Hillary Rodham Clinton? Wasn’t it Hillary Rodham Clinton who spent the last few days neglecting to campaign in places like Michigan or Wisconsin or Pennsylvania or places like that while [Trump] was everywhere?” he added. “Y’all remember that?”

Smith further made mention of Harris’ presidential run and suggested she lost to Trump because the Democratic Party held on to former president Joe Biden until the last minute, not as a result of Americans being unready for a female president.

“How about 2024 when Kamala Harris was running as the Democratic nominee for the presidency of the United States of America? Yes, she did only have 107 days to do it,” he said.

“But whose fault was that? The Republicans, Black people, Hispanics, women, whomever. Nobody told y’all to hold on to Joe Biden for dear life until July of that summer, when there was evidence that showed months earlier that he wasn’t ready anymore.”

Smith also said that Harris was the first Democratic candidate in history to garner the most votes, adding that her reluctance to accept interviews and she distancing herself from some decisions made by the Biden administration played a role in her defeat to Trump, Fox News reported.

But though Smith claimed that Harris has the most votes of any Democratic candidate in history, that record belongs to Biden, as he secured over 81 million votes in 2020. “But 74 million plus people still came out and voted for you. Myself included,” Smith said.

Smith also touched on previous complimentary comments he had made about Michelle Obama, stating that Trump would have lost to her if she had run for president.

He said he was still adamant it would have been the case.

Nicki Minaj Becomes First Rapper to Address United Nations

Nicki Minaj gave credit to President Donald Trump during her U.N. speech on Tuesday, acknowledging his role in highlighting violence in Nigeria, but she stressed she is not taking any political side.

The rapper, who made history as the first female artist to address the United Nations, spoke softly yet firmly, calling for urgent action to protect religious freedom in Nigeria. She highlighted reports of attacks on Christians while keeping her focus on the victims rather than politics, as reported by TMZ.

Minaj was invited to speak by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz after publicly backing Trump’s social media statement on Nigeria. Though she acknowledged Trump’s role, she stressed that her message was about the urgent need for protection, not partisan politics.

Before stepping on stage, Minaj appeared thoughtful, gathering her words. Once she spoke, she drew on her New York roots, urging that regions in Africa receive the same religious protections as those in the U.S.

She also thanked her fanbase, the Barbz, calling them her “pillar and rock.” While recognizing Trump’s warnings to Nigeria, she maintained her neutrality, keeping the focus on advocacy and awareness.

Trump govt quietly attempting to negotiate new peace plan with Russia

The Trump administration has been quietly hammering out a new peace plan with Russia to end its war with Ukraine, according to a new report by CNN.

The president’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who has been at the center of the administration’s talks with Moscow, has been leading the effort, the report said. The negotiations accelerated this week as the administration feels the Kremlin has signaled a renewed openness to a deal, the report added citing a source.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and a top-level Pentagon delegation arrived on Wednesday morning in Ukraine “on a fact finding mission to meet with Ukrainian officials and discuss efforts to end the war,” Army Spokesperson Col. Dave Butler said in a statement.

The mission, at the direction of the president, was part of the White House effort to resuscitate peace talks, according to a separate source who is a US official. Driscoll was set to discuss battlefield conditions and weapons needs with President Volodymyr Zelensky and other senior Ukrainian officials, as well as the nascent peace efforts, the official said.

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the US delegation traveling to Kyiv.

Driscoll has not been publicly involved in the last rounds of peace talks, but he is a close ally of Vice President JD Vance. Other officials traveling with Driscoll to Kyiv were Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George; Gen. Chris Donahue, the top US Army commander in Europe; and Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Weimer.

Russian sources also confirmed to CNN that there are ongoing high-level contacts between US and Russian officials, including Witkoff. Russian Special Envoy Kirill Dmitriev went to the US in October to meet Witkoff and others and had what a Russian source told CNN were “very productive discussions.”

According to an Axios report, the current draft being hashed out between Washington and Moscow is focused on 28 points, including security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe, as well as future US relations with Russia and Ukraine.

The Kremlin on Wednesday downplayed the Axios report. When asked about it, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that there are “no new developments to report so far” regarding an end to the war.

“There were discussions in Anchorage. Beyond what was discussed in Anchorage, there have been no updates yet,” he said, referencing a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump in Alaska in August.

Europe and Ukraine’s involvement in the talks so far remains unclear, the source in the CNN report said, as well as whether they would support such a plan.

The discussions come as the Trump administration has tried repeatedly to find an end to the war, only for talks to fall apart after Putin refused to make substantial commitments to the effort. Previous US peace talks had focused on freezing Russian and Ukrainian troops along current battle lines, a proposal that the Kremlin previously rejected.

White House shares video of Trump and Cristiano Ronaldo casually having a conversation

The White House has released a new video capturing a relaxed conversation between US President Donald Trump and football star Cristiano Ronaldo, who was accompanied by his fiancée, Georgina Rodriguez.

Filmed inside the White House, the clip shows Trump and Ronaldo chatting informally before the Portuguese forward breaks into laughter.

The video was captioned “Two GOATS. CR7 X 45/47”

This comes after Trump hosted a high-profile reception on Tuesday night, held in honor of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to Washington, D.C. Ronaldo, who currently plays in the Saudi Pro League, attended as part of the Saudi delegation, with Georgina Rodriguez by his side.

At the dinner, Trump revealed that his youngest son is a big fan of the footballers and joked that he likes him more.

Piers Morgan grills Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar over the “Christian genocide”

English media personality, Piers Morgan, grilled Nigeria’s minister of foreign affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, on the “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.

Appearing on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Tugger was asked about what US President Donald Trump referred to as the Christian genocide in Nigeria.

Reacting, Tugger expressed his reservations about the threat by the US President to intervene in Nigeria over the k!llings of Christians. Tugger stated that Nigeria does not want to be the next Sudan, turned into a war zone after foreign interference.

Tugger told Morgan: “We don’t want to be the next Sudan. We will not allow ourselves to be the next Sudan. Where are the faith-based groups that were agitating… They are no longer there to fix Sudan, not North, not South. It is Nigeria, as a member of the Peace Council of the African Union, that is left with the heavy lifting.”

Morgan replied: “Foreign minister, if I may, I’d like to jump in, if I may, because you do seem to be avoiding my questions. You don’t seem to know how many Christians have been murd3red, which I find surprising…”

“I am not avoiding your questions,” Tugger said.

“Well, with respect sir, you have not…” Piers tried to speak, but Tugger continued insisting that he was not avoiding the question about a Christian genocide.

Tugger stated that many victims of the genocide in Nigeria “may not necessarily be Christians”.

Morgan then said: “What you’re saying is that you dispute the number of Christians that have been reported to be k!lled, but you have no idea how many Christians have been k!lled. What we do agree on is how many Churches have been destroyed. Do you know how many churches?”

Tugger went on to read out from a script the statistics of churches attacked in recent years. However, he added that it isn’t just churches that are being attacked. He stated that mosques are also being attacked.

Tugger said: “Nigeria is configured in such a way that you have Muslim and Christian populations all across the country. There are, of course, states that have high concentration of Christians, same way there are states that have high concentration of Muslims.”

BBC apologizes to Princess of Wales for referring to her as “Kate Middleton”

The BBC has apologized to Catherine, Princess of Wales, for repeatedly referring to her as “Kate Middleton” during the British broadcaster’s recent coverage of Armistice Day.

News presenter and correspondent, Rajini Vaidyanathan repeatedly referred to the popular 43-year-old royal by her maiden name last week, sparking complaints from viewers watching the Remembrance coverage.

“During our coverage of memorials to commemorate Armistice Day we mistakenly referred to Catherine, Princess of Wales as Kate Middleton; these were errors during hours of live broadcasting for which we apologise,” the BBC said in a statement.

“Throughout our Armistice Day coverage more broadly, we referred to Catherine by her correct title,” it added.

Armistice Day also known as Remembrance Day – commemorates the end of World War I and has become a day to remember all those who have lost their lives in conflict. The Princess of Wales made her first appearance at the Armistice Day Service of Remembrance on November 11, leading the nation in a two-minute silence before laying a wreath on behalf of the royal family.

The apology comes after the BBC also apologized to US President Donald Trump last week over an editing mishap that featured in a documentary, which he has threatened to sue over.

On Thursday, the BBC apologized to Trump for how a 2021 speech was cut together in an October 2024 documentary titled “Trump: A Second Chance?” saying that it “sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited.”

However, the BBC rejected a claim of defamation made by the US president’s lawyers and has refused to pay any compensation. The controversy plunged the broadcaster into its biggest crisis in years and triggered the resignations of BBC director general Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness.

Trump subsequently told reporters that he intends to sue the BBC for between $1 billion and $5 billion despite the broadcaster’s apology. “I think I have to do it,” Trump told reporters. “They’ve even admitted that they cheated. … They cheated, they changed the words coming out of my mouth.”

Jack Mwiimbu says Given Lubinda is safe and in good health after being rescued by the Zambia Police Service

Home Affairs Minister Jack Mwiimbu says Given Lubinda is safe and in good health after being rescued by the Zambia Police Service.

Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Affairs, Jack Mwiimbu Said

Police Probe Video of PF Leader Given Lubinda in Distress

Police have launched investigations into a circulating video in which Patriotic Front (PF) faction Acting President Given Lubinda appears in distress and seemingly coerced by suspected political cadres.

Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu said if the video is verified as authentic, it depicts serious crimes including abduction, assault, and coercion, all of which carry heavy prison sentences under Zambian law.

Speaking at a press briefing, Mr. Mwiimbu emphasized that the Zambia Police Service will investigate the matter with the utmost urgency to ensure accountability and uphold public safety.

KAFWAYA CONDEMNS “INHUMANE” TREATMENT OF GIVEN LUBINDA

Lunte Member of Parliament writes:::

I AM SAD FOR GIVEN LUBINDA

The PF Acting President has been subjected to inhumane and degrading treatment today.

Those who abducted him, took him to unknown place, locked him up, tortured him, and did proceeded to do whatever they did have broken the law in broad daylight.

These individuals are suspected criminals and must be treated as such.

As I firmly condemn the actions of these suspected perpetrators, I equally call upon the Zambia Police to act decisively and arrest all those involved, including their sponsors.

From the quick police response in Chingola following the stoning incident, we know that the police have the capacity to swing into action.

Now that social media is awash with clear video footage of the abduction of Given Lubinda just as it was with the stoning incident the same investigative tactics deployed in Chingola should be applied here.

We remain hopeful that, one day soon, Zambia will be a country free from political violence.

Restoring EVERYTHING PATRIOTIC.

KALABA CONDEMNS ATTACK AND ABDUCTION OF GIVEN LUBINDA

KALABA CONDEMNS THE BRUTAL ATTACK AND ABDUCTION OF GIVEN LUBINDA

… says  today’s attack represents a dangerous and unacceptable shift in the country’s political culture.

LUSAKA, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER, 19, 2025 [SMART EAGLES]

Citizens  First party President Harry Kalaba has strongly condemned the  brutal attack and abduction of Patriotic Front  (PF) Acting  president  Given Lubinda in Kabwe today  at the hands of suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres.

Mr. Kalaba has told Smart Eagles that todays attack is not only disturbing but represents a dangerous and unacceptable shift in the country’s political culture.

He said  if left unchecked, this emerging pattern of intimidation, violence, and lawlessness risks taking root in the country, threatening the democratic values which have been protected for decades.

“This new culture whether of abductions, harassment, or intimidation must be nipped in the bud immediately, for it tarnishes Zambia’s image in the eyes of the international community and undermines our long-standing reputation as a beacon of peace and democracy in the region. I call upon the UPND leadership to publicly and decisively denounce all acts of political violence and ensure that perpetrators are brought to book, regardless of their political affiliation,” Mr. Kalaba said.

“This violence must stop now. It has the potential to further escalate an already charged political environment, risking chaos and instability as the nation heads toward next year’s general elections. Zambia has, for decades, been celebrated for its peaceful and orderly transitions of power, a legacy admired both regionally and globally. This impeccable record built through the collective commitment of generations should not be sacrificed by anyone for political expediency,” he said.

The CF leader has since called on all political actors, law-enforcement agencies, civil-society organisations, and citizens to uphold the rule of law, preserve peace, and defend our democracy.

“Zambia belongs to all of us, and we must not allow violence to define our political future,” he said.

UPND has always been a violent grouping that has played victim- Makebi Zulu

Hon Makebi Zulu writes;

Disturbing videos of Acting Patriotic Front- PF- President, Given Lubinda being harassed and dragged by UPND cadres have been released on the internet, exposing the extent of the ruling party’s violence.

This is not an expose of anything new but proof that the UPND has always been a violent grouping that has played victim for a long while now, but can no longer sustain the facade, especially now that it has become evident that PF remains popular despite their attempts to bury it.

While the Patriotic Front rebrands from the unhealthy tag of violence, the UPND continues to expose  itself and can no longer sustain its claims of having gotten rid of cadres.

Such behavior is concerning and should not be tolerated especially as we go towards an election period.

We therefore condemn in the strongest terms, the attacks on Hon. Lubinda and challenge the UPND leadership to do the same and control their cadres if at all they do not carry out such acts with the blessing of the party.

Also, we call on the Church, NGOs, political parties and every well meaning Zambian to condemn such brutality.

Zambia is a Democracy and as such, divergent political opinions must be respected and citizens must be allowed to express their freedoms of speech, assembly and  association among others.

Violence has never solved any problems. It is however a factor that has gravely exacerbated situations from bad to worse and most nations never recover from it. Let us treasure this One Zambia, One Nation.

WHO IS PROTECTING THIS LAWLESSNESS AND DEFIANCE OF THE PRESIDENT’S DIRECTIVE AGAINST CADERISM?- Hon Don Mwenda

WHO IS PROTECTING THIS LAWLESSNESS AND DEFIANCE OF THE PRESIDENT’S DIRECTIVE AGAINST CADERISM?

To the Provincial Minister and UPND Provincial Chairman Hon Mwabashike Nkulukusa, Dr. Milner Mwanakampwe, the Permanent Secretary, the District Commissioner, and the Police Command in Central Province  Kabwe in particular.

This message is not a request. It is a demand for immediate and uncompromised action.

The violent attack on Hon. Given Lubinda by some of our own youths is an embarrassment to the party and an insult to the President’s clear directive against caderism.

This nonsense must end today. Anyone involved must be fished out, exposed, and dealt with by the full force of the law no protection, no excuses, no internal shielding.

If we allow this culture of impunity to grow, then we must not deceive ourselves when the people punish us at the ballot in 2026.

Indiscipline has killed many parties before. It will kill ours too if we continue treating it with softness.

LET ME BE VERY CLEAR.

These youths acted on their own. They did not represent the party, and they did not act with the blessings of any responsible leadership.

Their actions were reckless, criminal, and politically suicidal.

TO MY FELLOW YOUTHS IN THE UPND.

Power is not permanent. The comfort you are enjoying today can disappear overnight if you continue abusing the party’s name. Others before you behaved this same way, and today they are forgotten, struggling, and full of regret.

Do not follow them. Discipline is the only thing that will keep us in power, not violence, not intimidation, not caderism.

TO OUR NATIONAL YOUTH CHAIRMAN.

These are your structures. These are your youths. This is the moment to show real leadership, not theory.

If we fail to act decisively now, we risk losing the confidence of the citizens who still believe in President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership and vision.

This matter requires a public demonstration of order, discipline, and accountability not statements, but visible action.

Let the nation see that UPND does not tolerate lawlessness from anyone, including its own members.

Yours in service.

Hon Don Mwenda

CAN PF RISE AGAIN? THE STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL AND REBRANDING IN OPPOSITION (2021–2025)

CAN PF RISE AGAIN? THE STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL AND REBRANDING IN OPPOSITION (2021–2025)

When the Patriotic Front (PF) lost power in August 2021, it marked the end of a decade-long rule that had begun with hope and ended in disillusionment. The party that once embodied the voice of the ordinary Zambian suddenly found itself in political wilderness — leaderless, fragmented, and struggling to find relevance in a rapidly changing political landscape.

Four years later, the question that continues to linger is simple but profound: Can the PF rise again?

A Party in Disarray

In the immediate aftermath of the 2021 defeat, the PF faced an identity crisis of historic proportions. The resignation and later death of its former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu left a vacuum that deepened existing factional rivalries. Instead of uniting around a common vision for renewal, the party descended into internal chaos.

Rival factions emerged — one loyal to Given Lubinda, another to Brian Mundubile, while others rallied around Chishimba Kambwili, Makebi Zulu, and Miles Sampa. Each claimed to represent the “true PF” and to carry forward Michael Sata’s legacy.
Court battles over leadership, the suspension and expulsion of key members, and public disagreements became the order of the day. For ordinary members and sympathizers, this infighting created confusion and eroded confidence in the party’s ability to present itself as a credible alternative to the ruling UPND.

Court battles over leadership, the suspension and expulsion of key members, and public disagreements became the order of the day. For ordinary members and sympathizers, this infighting created confusion and eroded confidence in the party’s ability to present itself as a credible alternative to the ruling UPND.

The Struggle for Legitimacy and Unity

At the heart of PF’s challenge has been the failure to elect a substantive leader. Since 2021, several attempts to convene a general conference have been postponed due to internal disputes and legal wrangles. Without a unified command structure, the party’s messaging has been inconsistent and reactive, often focused more on defending its past record than presenting a fresh vision for the future.

However, within the turmoil, a quiet consensus has been emerging: that the PF must reform or perish. A growing number of party stalwarts — particularly younger members — are calling for a return to grassroots politics, transparency, and genuine engagement with communities rather than the politics of entitlement and nostalgia.

Some within the PF argue that the party should adopt a “post-Lungu” identity, one that honors his role but moves beyond his era to attract a new generation of voters disillusioned with both the PF’s past and the UPND’s current challenges.

Public Perception and the Battle for Credibility

Public perception remains the PF’s greatest obstacle. For many Zambians, the memory of high debt levels, corruption allegations, and political intimidation under PF rule is still fresh. The current government has capitalized on these perceptions to frame the PF as a symbol of misrule.

To rebuild credibility, the PF must confront its past honestly. Merely blaming political persecution or painting itself as a victim of UPND’s alleged vengeance has not resonated with the public. What Zambians seek is introspection, accountability, and a clear break from the excesses of the past.

Yet, amid these challenges, the PF continues to demonstrate resilience. Despite defections and arrests of some of its leaders, it remains the single largest opposition party with an established grassroots network, especially in urban Copperbelt, Lusaka, and Luapula regions.

The New Faces and Emerging Dynamics

The vacuum in leadership has given rise to new political ambitions within the party.

Makebi Zulu, a youthful and articulate lawyer, has positioned himself as a modernizer capable of appealing to both the middle class and youth vote.

Brian Mundubile, a seasoned parliamentarian, represents the more traditional PF establishment, emphasizing continuity and discipline.

Chishimba Kambwili, ever the populist, appeals to the Sata-era loyalists who crave the firebrand politics of the early PF.

However, unless these figures can set aside personal ambitions for the collective good, the party risks disintegrating further. The absence of a clear ideological direction — whether the PF wants to be a populist movement, a conservative party, or a developmental alternative — continues to hinder its rebranding.

The Path Forward: Renewal or Irrelevance

For the PF to rise again, it must undergo deep structural and cultural transformation. Analysts and insiders alike point to several necessary steps:

1. Electing a legitimate and unifying leader through a transparent convention.

2. Rebuilding trust with the public by acknowledging past mistakes and demonstrating a commitment to accountability.

3. Engaging the youth — not through slogans, but through policies addressing unemployment, education, and entrepreneurship.

4. Reasserting its ideology — whether pro-poor populism or economic nationalism — to differentiate itself from the ruling UPND.

5. Modernizing communication and organization, including embracing digital campaigns and policy-driven debate.

Failure to reform could consign the PF to the fate of other once-dominant African parties that faded into irrelevance after losing power.

A Test of Legacy and Leadership

The Patriotic Front stands at a crossroads. It can either reinvent itself as a disciplined, democratic, and policy-oriented opposition—or continue down the path of internal squabbles and personality politics.

Michael Sata’s dream was to build a movement that championed ordinary Zambians. Edgar Lungu’s era tested that dream, and history will judge whether those who come after can restore it..

If the PF is to rise again, it must remember that the Zambian people are not nostalgic for power, but for purpose. Only a party that offers that purpose will earn their trust again.

HH CAN ONLY WIN NEXT YEAR’S  ELECTION THROUGH RIGGING – KATEKA

HH CAN ONLY WIN NEXT YEAR’S  ELECTION THROUGH RIGGING – KATEKA

NEW Heritage Party President Chishala Kateka says the only way President Hakainde Hichilema will win next year’s election is through rigging.

Commenting on UPND Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa, who said President Hichilema would still win by a landslide margin next year despite the Chingola incident, Kateka argued that the President wouldn’t stand a chance of winning on a level playing field.

“We know their games and their tricks. They are trying to push through the constitutional amendment bill because they know that without pushing that through, they can’t go through. In a level playing field, Hakainde stands no chance of winning these elections. But they’ve done everything to skew [the playing field]” she said.

DAVIES MWILA SAYS LUBINDA HAS NO POWERS TO APPOINT MEMBERS TO THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE

DAVIES MWILA SAYS LUBINDA HAS NO POWERS TO APPOINT MEMBERS TO THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE

Patriotic Front (PF) Member of the Central Committee, Davies Mwila, has described the recent appointment of Mansa Central Member of Parliament, Chitalu Chilufya, and Luapula Constituency member of Parliament, Chanda Katotobwe, to the party’s Central Committee by acting PF faction President, Given Lubinda, as illegal.

Mr. Mwila said the appointment of any member to the Central Committee must be approved through the National Executive Committee and ratified by the Central Committee, procedures which he claims were not followed.

Addressing the media in Lusaka today, Mr. Mwila said the appointments made by Mr. Lubinda lack legal backing under the party constitution.

“The party now appeals to National Chairma.  Musonda Mpankata, to take charge, as the constitution empowers him between now and the General Conference, to revoke such appointments,” said Mr. Mwila.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mwila has called on Mr. Lubinda, Makebi Zulu, Chitalu Chilufya, and Brian Mundubile to step down from the Central Committee as they are presidential candidates for the party.

He has further appealed for calm among party members as the PF prepares to hold its General Conference later this month.

THIS IS NOT POLITICS — IT IS SPONSORED THUGGERY

THIS IS NOT POLITICS — IT IS SPONSORED THUGGERY

By Michael Zephaniah Phiri — Political Activist

Zambia stands at a dangerous turning point. For years, many citizens believed cadrism was a product of the past. Yet today, the violence we are witnessing under the UPND administration has grown far beyond ordinary cadre behaviour. What has emerged is an organised form of sponsored thuggery, emboldened by political protection and fuelled by the silence of the very leadership sworn to protect this nation.

The recent beating, brutalisation, and *abduction of Patriotic Front (PF) Acting President Hon. Given Lubinda in Kabwe is a national disgrace.*  It is a brutal reminder that Zambia’s democracy is being strangled before our very eyes. Hon. Lubinda was attacked while conducting an internal party meeting  a constitutional right protected under Article 60. Yet UPND cadres stormed the venue, disrupted the gathering, and abducted him with shocking impunity.

This is not an isolated incident. It is part of a growing pattern of violent political intimidation.

*A Dangerous Silence from State Leadership*

Zambians vividly recall President Hakainde Hichilema’s own words:
“We could have nailed them after 2021 because losing a general election is a crime.

Whether said in jest or not, such statements embolden those who believe violence is a legitimate political tool. Cadres now act as though abducting opposition leaders is an act of loyalty  a way to please the Head of State.

*Mr. President, where are you taking this country?*

If opposition political parties cannot meet, cannot organise, and cannot choose their leadership without being attacked, then Zambia is no longer a functioning democracy. It becomes a state where *fear replaces dialogue, violence replaces debate, and thuggery replaces political competition.*

From PF Cadrism to UPND Thuggery

Yes, cadrism existed under the PF era. But

what Zambia is witnessing today is far worse.

This is not mere harassment  this is abduction, a crime under any democratic system. It is a direct assault on the multiparty character of the Republic.

What happened in Kabwe is not just an attack on PF.

It is an attack on the *Zambian Constitution, on political freedoms,*  and on the *basic right to participate in national affairs.*

If UPND cadres can abduct a senior political leader today, what will stop them from attacking journalists tomorrow? Civil society? Ordinary citizens?

Violence, if not stopped, does not discriminate. It eventually consumes everyone  even those who believe they control it.

*A President’s Duty Is to Protect the Nation  Not His Cadres*

President Hichilema must urgently call his followers to order.
The responsibility of a Head of State is *to unite the nation,*  not to preside over violence carried out in his name. The silence from State House over Hon. Lubinda’s abduction is not just troubling  it is dangerous.

A leader cannot preach peace on the international stage while cadres unleash terror at home.

*Mr. President, you must act.*

You must condemn this violence.

You must ensure that the perpetrators are arrested.

And most importantly, you must restore the rule of law before Zambia descends into chaos.

*The Future Is in Jeopardy*

The path we are on is unsustainable. If left unchecked, this culture of violence will become a permanent feature of our politics. And once democracy collapses, rebuilding it becomes a generational task.

Zambia is greater than any political party, greater than any election, and greater than any individual.
No President has the right to hand over this nation to the rule of thugs.

I call for peace.

I call for restraint.

And above all, I call for leadership that values the lives, rights, and freedoms of all Zambians not just those wearing party colours.

*Violence cannot build a nation.*

*Silence cannot protect a democracy.*

*And fear cannot lead Zambia into the future.*

THE ONLY PLAN FOR ZAMBIA’S IMMEDIATE ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION IS HERE! – Willah J. Mudolo

 THE ONLY PLAN FOR ZAMBIA’S IMMEDIATE ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION IS HERE! 

For generations, the promise of prosperity for majority of our citizens has been just that—a promise. While other candidates offer recycled rhetoric and vague ambitions, I offer action. I am the only candidate in this race with a concrete, guaranteed plan—the National Economic Transformation Blueprint—to immediately drive exponential economic growth and ensure, for the first time, that wealth is distributed fairly to every single Zambian.

Why my plan is different—and why it will work:

– We Demand Results: My blueprint isn’t just about small gains; it’s about making our economy 5 to 10 TIMES LARGER during our time in office. You will see and feel positive change in our first term, and by our second, everyone will have a visibly higher quality of life.

– The Funding is Secured: We are uniquely placed to marshal and mobilise the TENS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS required to execute this plan. We will reform institutions to enable billions per annum for massive inclusive projects.

 Five Pillars of Guaranteed Action: We will not rely on one sector. Our comprehensive strategy is built on FIVE PILLARS that attack poverty from every angle:

1. People-Centred Development: Jobs Now!

– Agricultural Revolution: We will grow the agricultural sector’s GDP five-fold, turning our farmers into wealth creators and ensuring national food security. We are tackling the poverty in our rural areas head-on.

– Formal Jobs & Skills: We will launch massive programs for formal job creation and immediately focus on education, vocational training, and a National Apprenticeship Programme to equip our youth with the skills needed for millions of new jobs.

2. Economic Resilience: Stability First!

– Financial & Debt Control: We will regain investor confidence, grow our foreign exchange reserves, and establish an independent Central Bank to ensure macro-economic stability.

– End Corruption: We will enforce stringent mechanisms to stamp out corruption at every level—from public acquisitions to the judiciary—ensuring our national wealth benefits our people, not a corrupt few.

3. Business-Led Growth: Unleashing Private Power!

– Fair Mining Deals: We will stop subsidizing wealthy mining companies, enforce an Earnings-Retention Policy, and ensure the Zambian people receive a fair contribution for the privilege of sharing our natural endowment.

– Infrastructure Blitz: We will immediately implement a comprehensive plan to upgrade neglected rural road networks and develop a fully efficient public transport system, supporting our growth as a regional trade hub.

– Energy Transformation: We will end power capacity gaps by rapidly expanding the grid and pioneering renewable energy (solar, hydro, biomass) and off-grid solutions, powering our industries and homes.

4. Living Together: A Better Society for All!

– We will introduce free primary and secondary education at government-funded schools to ensure every child has a path to success.

– We will address the housing deficit of over 2 million units by reforming land bureaucracy and financing to make homeownership a reality for all Zambians.

5. Sustainable Government: Stewardship for Tomorrow!

– We will launch a National Development Bank and Cooperative Banks to direct funding to entrepreneurs, SMEs, and housing, ensuring funds flow to every part of society, including first-time home buyers.

The time for talk and empty promises is over. This is not just a campaign—it’s a commitment to a complete transformation of Zambia from where it is currently into a prosperous nation for all. We have the program, the people, and the credibility to mobilise investment and undertake major diversification and infrastructural investment to deliver prosperity for all, once and for all. Don’t settle for promises. Demand the blueprint for action!

LAMENTATIONS FROM CHAWAMA CONSTITUENCY: STUCK WITH AN ABSENTEE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT

LAMENTATIONS FROM CHAWAMA CONSTITUENCY: STUCK WITH AN ABSENTEE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT

As someone born and bred in Chawama Constituency, a calculated marginalisation of the Constituency from achieving its development goals hurts me. But here I sit, watching our Chawama Member of Parliament (MP), Hon. Tasila Lungu, stay away for 41 months from Parliament.

In 4 years 4 months (52 months) of this parliament session, she has only been around for a total of 11 months. She has been an absentee MP,  literally for this whole term. For a poor constituency like Chawama, which is hungry for development, this is unacceptable. The people of Chawama have literally been robbed a full term of office, through we orchestrated absentia (pregnancy, extended maternity, extended nursing of her sick child, extended compasionate leave, and extended court) .

When Hon. Sunday Chanda, Hon. Twambo Mutinta, Hon. Imanga Wamunyima, Hon. Nancy Mbololwa Subulwa, and Hon. Oliver Amutike, among others, are everyday aggressively making Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to count for their respective constituencies, she has been absent from Parliament for 41 months. It’s a shame, there is nothing like an acting MP. When an MP is not there, that’s all—no one comes in to act! Parliament must relook into its laws. This has been a horrible and enduring 5 years for Chawama Constituency.

Without a doubt, my lamentation, will attract insults from small minds, but that’s not a problem for me. The truth still remains—she is an absentee MP.

HH’s Once-Doubted Methodical Diplomacy Now Attracting Global Powers to Zambia

HH’s Once-Doubted Methodical Diplomacy Now Attracting Global Powers to Zambia
       ======================

In just four years under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership, Zambia has hosted an impressive array of high-profile visits from some of the world’s most influential leaders.

At the start of his presidency, opposition leaders accused President HH of abandoning Zambia’s long-standing tradition of non-alignment, a diplomatic philosophy rooted in the vision of the country’s founding President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda. Critics argued that HH appeared to lean more  towards the West Geopolitically, particularly during his  frequent engagements with the West  as he was working tirelessly to secure Zambia’s debt restructuring.

Eventually, his  methodical and strategic approach later  proved far more balanced, leaving his critics in suspense. After making significant progress on debt restructuring, President Hichilema expanded his focus eastward, strengthening ties with major Geopolitical Eastern powers, including China. His  pragmatic diplomacy seemingly  guided by national interest rather than ideology, has Seen Zambia  welcome leaders from both East and West, effectively sponsoring some breezy of silence in the opposition camp on their earlier accusations of bias.

Just a few days ago, Zambia hosted the President of Israel, H.E. Isaac Herzog. Geopolitically, Israel is an ally of the west. Tomorrow, the country is set to welcome the Premier of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Li Qiang.  To clarify, the Premier in China functions similarly to a Prime Minister in countries like the United Kingdom. He oversees  government activities and policy implementation. His visit is particularly significant as Zambia seeks increased investment in critical sectors such as energy.

Over the past four years, Zambia has also received leaders and senior Government officials from globally influential nations, including the President of Germany, H.E. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and the President of Italy, H.E. Sergio Mattarella.

Call them all you want, but these visits show the  success of President HH’s methodical diplomacy, which has translated into notable  increased investments in revitalizing the mining sector that was in the ICU as well as investments in fertilizer manufacturing for agriculture among others. Today we have industries opening up every now and then, with the only major challenge beeing loadshedding.

Knowing very well where we are coming from, five years ago,  HH has managed to restore the  global confidence in Zambia as a stable and strategic partner.

His Diplomatic Mingalato  have today prompted renewed support from the United States, which has announced plans to restore previously cut  grants to support Zambia’s healthcare sector.

Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro told U.S. officials that he is ready to step down within two to three years

Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro told U.S. officials during informal talks that he is ready to step down within two to three years

According to The New York Times, Washington rejected the proposal. “Any delay in transferring power by Maduro is unacceptable to the White House,” the report says.

The NYT writes that last week U.S. President Donald Trump held two meetings in the White House Situation Room to discuss the crisis in Venezuela and review potential options.

Military planning experts prepared lists of targets in Venezuela believed to be linked to drug trafficking and eligible for potential strikes. The Pentagon is also considering strikes on Venezuelan military units.

According to the paper, the behind-the-scenes talks show that a diplomatic solution to the conflict is still possible.

President Donald Trump has announced a formal U.S. military security guarantee for Saudi Arabia, designating the Kingdom as a “Major non-NATO Ally” and unveiling a brand-new Strategic Defense Agreement with Riyadh.

This is historic. It means Washington is now committing to Saudi Arabia’s defense in a way it never has before, a level of partnership previously reserved for countries like Japan, Israel, and South Korea.

Trump is effectively locking the U.S. and Saudi Arabia into a long-term military, economic, and technological alliance, something no administration has dared to do.

This is a seismic geopolitical shift. The entire region just changed.

VIDEO: HON.GIVEN LUBINDA BEATEN, BRUTALISED AND ABDUCTED IN KABWE

🇿🇲 DEVELOPING | Given Lubinda Abducted in Kabwe, Political Temperature Spikes

Patriotic Front Acting President Given Lubinda has been violently attacked and allegedly abducted in Kabwe this afternoon by individuals believed to be UPND cadres, according to PF sources and video footage circulating widely online.

The footage shows Lubinda being manhandled by a group of young men outside a building. Only one of the aggressors is wearing UPND-branded clothing, a detail now shaping public debate as competing narratives emerge about who is responsible and why the incident happened.

PF presidential aspirant Brian Mundubile was first to speak to the media, stating that Lubinda “has been attacked and abducted by suspected UPND cadres” and accusing the ruling party of unleashing political violence ahead of the PF convention.
Reactions from the opposition escalated quickly.

Citizens First leader Harry Kalaba condemned the assault, saying: “If you allow this thuggery and political abductions to continue, soon there will be no Zambia left for any of us to live in or for you to preside over.”

Citizens First leader Harry Kalaba condemned the assault, saying: “If you allow this thuggery and political abductions to continue, soon there will be no Zambia left for any of us to live in or for you to preside over.”

DPP President Antonio Mwanza called it “a direct assault on the rule of law” and demanded immediate arrests.

The first ruling party official to respond was Kabwata MP Andrew Tayengwa, who pushed back sharply, saying:

“PF is a serious criminal organisation. Ba UPND wake up. People are using your regalia to commit serious crimes and you are quiet. These moves are well calculated to discredit this government.”

Tayengwa’s statement mirrors the view circulating within some UPND circles that the attack may be staged or carried out by PF factions themselves, taking advantage of rising tensions inside the party.

Across social media the public is divided. Some insist the violence is linked to this morning’s PF internal implosion, where former Secretary General Davies Mwila rejected Lubinda’s appointments of Dr Chitalu Chilufya and Chanda Katotombwe as illegal.

Others argue that the attack fits into a chain of political hostilities that followed the Chingola stoning of President Hakainde Hichilema.

A segment of commentators is openly suggesting the abduction could be part of PF’s internal war as the convention draws close.

Several posts accuse Lubinda of “rigging the upcoming vote” through last-minute appointments and claim rival factions may have acted out of anger.

Police have not yet issued a statement on the incident, despite the video spreading rapidly across platforms.

This is a developing story, and The People’s Brief is tracking all angles: the PF factional dynamics, the authenticity of the alleged UPND involvement, and the emerging security implications as the country heads toward a tense political year.

CHAWAMA IS BEING STARVED, DECLARE TASILA LUNGU’S SEAT VACANT – LUPINDULA

CHAWAMA IS BEING STARVED, DECLARE TASILA LUNGU’S SEAT VACANT – LUPINDULA

GOVERNANCE expert, Davies Lupindula, has called on the Speaker of the National Assembly to immediately declare the Chawama constituency seat vacant, arguing that the continued absence of area Member of Parliament Tasila Lungu is disadvantaging residents.

A previous ruling by the Speaker indicated that Ms. Lungu would resume her parliamentary duties after the burial of her father, former President, Edgar Lungu.

But speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Lupindula has accused the Lungu family of politicizing the funeral, therefore, delaying the burial.

“The Lungu family have taken a political stance on the funeral at the expense of national interest,” said Mr. Lupindula.

He argued that the situation has left the people of Chawama without effective representation, stressing that development efforts in the constituency cannot be put on hold.

Mr. Lupindula has since called on the Speaker to immediately declare the seat vacant without hesitation adding that the people of Chawama deserve someone who will direct the constituency in areas of development.

THEY HAVE ABANDONED ME AND GONE QUIET ON ME’  WHY ME CRIES FOR HELP AS PF DITCH HIM.

‘THEY HAVE ABANDONED ME AND GOME QUIET ON ME’  WHY ME CRIES FOR HELP AS PF DITCH HIM.

Embattled Francis Kapwepwe popularly known as WHY ME has boamed the lack of support for people who assured him of being there for him. He said he doesn’t even get regular visits as usual at all. He said THEY promised to support him to the end in any way but shockingly THEY are nowhere to be seen at all.

He said the officials from the former rulling party are not picking his calls and most of them have blocked him. Why me is in jail as State has refused granting him anything looking like bail even if he qualifies for it due to his conduct.

Confident of securing the verdict, the state has submitted that the defendant is a flight risk who can escape like he did last time to a place or location that maybe hard to locate him.

The young boy was all over insulting the government predominantly the head of state in a damaging way abusing socialeeia mainly TikTok and Facebook where he enjoyed massive audience. It is believed that PF aided his legal protection which has since been withdrawn. Why me is on his own now relying on legal aid as he can’t afford a lawyer and anyone known in PF has abandoned him to face issues for himself.

Why me was abducted by the State Agents in a swift Movie like scenario in Zimbabwe through the help of a lady he went down on planning marriage with him. The state lured him into the trap and grabbed him straight to Lusaka and kept in custody for sometime sparkling noise mainly from the opposition who started speculating that he has been killed.

Months later he appeared in court ending the speculations of his death but also ended any social sympathy and support he was getting as everyone ran for cover as the state tries to fish data from him as to who was working with him etc.

Todate why me remains in prison as talks of bail are ever being entertained until the matter is concluded.

Davies Mwila Opens New Front As PF Convention Tensions Mount

 CONTEXT | Mwila Opens New Front As PF Convention Tensions Mount

Internal tensions in the Patriotic Front have entered a new and dangerous phase. Former Secretary General Davies Mwila has rejected the appointment of Dr Chitalu Chilufya and Chanda Katotombwe as Members of the Central Committee, calling the move unconstitutional and accusing Acting President Given Lubinda of abusing his temporary authority.

The confrontation has exposed deeper fractures inside the party only days before the general conference where PF is expected to elect a new leader.

Mwila delivered his statement this morning with the force of a seasoned party enforcer. He reminded members that the PF constitution requires all MCC appointments to pass through the National Executive Committee before ratification by the Central Committee.

He said Lubinda bypassed these checks, rendering the appointments “null and void”. His tone carried a clear warning to Lubinda that the party is watching every move ahead of the leadership vote.

He also called on National Chairman Musonda Mpankata to “take charge” as mandated by the PF Constitution. Mwila said Mpankata must preside over all processes leading to the General Conference because the party cannot afford procedural breaches at a moment that will define its future.

Mwila demanded that all aspirants relinquish their positions to maintain a level playing field as required in internal elections.

The timing of this clash is not innocent. Mwila is a key figure inside the Mundubile camp, and the sentiment within that group is that Lubinda is using his acting role to tilt the internal chessboard.

Mundubile’s supporters believe Lubinda is quietly consolidating influence inside the Central Committee to soften the ground for his own candidacy. They see the Chilufya and Katotombwe appointments as part of that manoeuvre.

The friction reveals two long-standing PF weaknesses. First, the reliance on personality power rather than institutional discipline. Second, a tradition of factional politics where loyalty is often transactional.

PF has always operated with competing power blocs, but factions were managed when the party held state power. Once the party lost the 2021 election, those factions grew teeth. The current leadership vacuum has made them uncontrollable.

This crisis is also a reminder of PF’s political history. In 2011, when the party took power, it destabilised the MMD with speed and precision because it understood one rule: a defeated party must close ranks or perish. PF failed to follow that same rule after losing in 2021. Instead of immediately managing succession, they delayed. Instead of insulating the party from external infiltration, they opened cracks that opponents could exploit.

Today those cracks are wide enough to swallow the entire convention.

The Chabinga factor has also weakened the party. Last week he told PF MPs that if they refused to cooperate with him, they should “not cry next year” because adoption certificates would come from him and Morgan Ng’ona. He reminded them that his court order remains in force.

PF downplays him, but delegates know that Chabinga controls legal levers that can disrupt the convention, derail adoptions and throw the party into prolonged legal paralysis. It is not surprising that some PF members now believe UPND is using the Chabinga ruling as a political advantage.

Lubinda’s own warnings to UPND have raised eyebrows. On Monday, he told the ruling party to “fix the secretariat or face us”. But critics note the contradiction. PF often says the courts are compromised, yet it is the same courts they rush to each time a factional dispute emerges.

One of our politically sharp readers put it bluntly: “These cases will be adjourned until next year July.” It sounds like sarcasm, but the PF legal roadmap has been unpredictable for months. That possibility cannot be dismissed.

PF insiders admit that greed, bought loyalty and paid allegiances are dimming the party’s prospects. Delegates say everyone wants to be president. Others are rumoured to be planning to register their own parties if they lose at the convention.

These dynamics make the PF convention not just a leadership contest but a battlefield of personal ambitions. A divided PF is a gift to the ruling party. The longer the confusion continues, the easier it becomes for the UPND to dominate 2026.

The PF convention hangs in the balance. Procedures are disputed. Loyalties are shifting. Factions are sharpening their lines. Today’s clash between Mwila and Lubinda is not the last. It is only the latest tremor in a party struggling to define itself before voters define it for them.

If PF cannot restore order in its own house, how will it convince the country it is ready to govern again?

Dr Chitalu Chilufya: The Technocrat Trapped in Political Cage

 THE CANDIDATES | Dr Chitalu Chilufya: The Technocrat Trapped in Political Cage

Dr Chitalu Chilufya sits in a strange corner of the PF leadership race. His name commands respect in professional circles, but inside the PF’s raw political theatre, he often feels like an outsider. He is brilliant, measured, and highly disciplined.

He is also a man whose biggest scandal and biggest strengths are tied to the same job: Minister of Health. His rise was meteoric. His fall was engineered. And his comeback is cautious.

Born on July 15, 1972 and trained as a medical doctor at UNZA, Chilufya came into Parliament through a 2013 by-election in Mansa Central. He carried himself like a reformer and performed like one. Under his leadership, the Ministry of Health expanded hospitals, rolled out mini-hospitals and pushed health insurance, NHIMA. However, it is impossible to speak about Chilufya without mentioning Honeybee. In 2020, it was alleged that the ministry procured expired drugs and defective condoms.

Critics still see him through that lens. But those who know PF internal politics insist Honeybee was not an accident. A cartel within PF reportedly engineered a purge to weaken him politically. Shortly after, President Edgar Lungu dropped him. That single act reshaped his public image and froze his political momentum.

Chitalu Chilufya is not a loud politician. He is not a rally-machine. He does not speak the explosive, chest-thumping PF language. He is the opposite of the cadres’ taste. PF’s grassroots culture rewards noise, loyalty displays and survival instincts.

Chilufya is an introvert with a technocratic posture. Delegates respect him but do not feel electrified by him. They see a national leader, yes, but not one who can conquer headlines or mobilise Copperbelt and Lusaka branch commanders. In Luapula, his home turf, he is respected more as a professional than as a political general.

Yet he has the rare ability to break ranks objectively. When PF aspirants were busy blaming UPND for the current energy crisis, Chilufya said something that shook his own party:

“There is no way we can run away from the fact that we did not do enough.”

That admission was political suicide in PF’s factional environment but a moment of truth in a country wrestling with 21-hour blackouts. It showed he is a governance candidate, not a populist. It also revealed why cadres often feel he is “too elite” for the base.

His political problem is structural. PF’s strength has always come from a deep network of mobilisers, businessmen, youth commanders and loyalists who survive on proximity to power. Chilufya is not a creation of this system. He is a technocrat who moved into politics.

PF cadres do not automatically rally behind technocrats. They rally behind fighters. They rally behind money. They rally behind loudness. Chilufya offers none of those instincts.

If PF held a clean, ideological convention, he would stand out as a strong governance candidate. But PF conventions are not clean. They are transactional, noisy, and shaped by provincial bargaining. Delegates vote based on who fed their structures, who funded their mobilisation, who fought for them when police descended, who protected them under PF rule and who can rebuild patronage networks. On that battlefield, Chilufya looks under-armed.

His best path to the presidency has never been through a PF convention. If Zambia’s politics followed a parliamentary system, Chilufya fits the profile of a prime minister. If Zambia faced a sudden transition where a Vice President takes over after a resignation or death, he is the type the establishment could elevate quietly.

He can govern. He may not be able to win a convention, but he can run a government.

But the irony remains powerful. PF desperately needs the type of leader Chilufya represents: disciplined, professional, predictable, technocratic. But the very culture PF created over the years makes it nearly impossible for such a leader to rise from within. PF built a machine that rewards combat, not competence. Now the party is trapped by its own chemistry

Chilufya is a candidate who makes sense on paper. He makes sense in Cabinet. He makes sense in a national unity government. But he does not yet make sense to PF’s delegates, whose motivations are shaped by loyalty wars, factional gifting, regional pride and raw survival. He could be a good president. He may never be a good PF convention candidate.

If PF were choosing a leader based on governance quality, Dr Chitalu Chilufya would be a serious contender. Instead, he is a reminder that in Zambian party politics, competence is not always currency.

Further, we remind our members that Articles 53 and 54 of the Patriotic Front Constitution clearly outline the current leadership framework of the party, particularly following the passing of our late Party President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

People called President Harry Kalaba  names, accused him of being a loner, surrogate of UPND as a way of distracting his vision to liberate Zambians above all frustrate his political ambition.

At no point did he opt to respond to all those accusations but focused on organizing his  CITIZENS FIRST PARTY     countrywide making sure it has structures in all the ten (10) provinces.

Today Citizens First Party has become attractive with structures national wide and clearly a well organized opposition political party to take on UPND come 2026.

Citizens First party today boasts of a national character whose party symbol and motto has sat well with the people across the country.

It’s actually funny to see those that called him names have turned there fingers of accusations among themselves accusing each other of being power hungry whilst others are responding to say colleagues among themselves are UPND sponsored Projects.

It has now been proven beyond any reasonable shadow of doubt that it was indeed wise for CF and President Harry Kalaba not to rush in alliances until at an appropriate time when everyone is organized in there individual political parties.

Zambians want united opposition ahead of 2026 general elections and President Harry Kalaba and CF has demonstrated relentless willingness to unite with other political parties and leaders in line with what majority citizens want.

I implore other opposition leaders not to rush on the table of negotiations without putting there parties in order but ensure that they have structures across the country first.

I hope other political parties in opposition will see the need to join hands with CF and President Harry Kalaba to give hope to majority citizens wallowing in abject poverty or simply living above the poverty line.

The PLO Lumumba Paradox: When Power Changes

 EDITOR’S NOTE | The Lumumba Paradox: When Power Changes, Principles Evaporate

Prof. PLO Lumumba’s 2025 appearance in Zambia has triggered a political déjà vu that many would rather forget. Today, he is being welcomed by PF leaders as a continental sage, photographed as an ally, and briefed as an advisor on governance and constitutional tensions. But Zambia remembers. In September 2018, the PF government under President Edgar Chagwa Lungu deported Lumumba upon arrival, citing vague “security concerns.”

Immigration officers detained him at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport and put him back on the next flight. The official line accused him of being a “security risk,” despite no evidence ever being offered. It was a political decision wrapped in bureaucratic wording.

Fast forward to 2025. The same political actors who barred him from breathing Zambian air are now presenting him as a moral compass. Brian Mundubile, one of PF’s presidential aspirants, held a warm meeting with him yesterday and described the encounter as “impactful,” quoting Lumumba’s warnings on political exclusion, youth frustration and constitutional legitimacy. He even invoked Madagascar and Sudan as cautionary tales.

The contrast could not be sharper. In 2018, PF deemed him too dangerous to address a leadership forum. Today, they lean on him to reinforce narratives against constitutional reforms by a rival government.

This reversal is not just irony. It is a portrait of Zambian politics at its most predictable. When in office, every party sees critics as risks. When in opposition, the same critics suddenly become prophets. PF blocked Lumumba when it enjoyed power. They now embrace him because his voice can be weaponised against the UPND’s constitution-making process. This speaks to the fact that many Zambian politicians do not reject ideas. They reject timing. They reject voices that threaten their hold on office. They reject criticism only until they need it.

Lumumba himself has kept a consistent message over the years: strong institutions, broad-based constitutional legitimacy, youth empowerment, and responsible leadership. What has not been consistent is the conduct of those citing him today. Mundubile now praises Lumumba’s “clarity on governance” yet remained silent when the PF government locked him out of the country.

The same PF figures who once labeled him subversive are now seeking moral authority from him. It signals a political class more loyal to convenience than principle.

Lumumba’s warnings on Zambia’s political climate deserve serious attention. He is right to caution about constitutional reform without consensus. He is right to highlight youth frustration as a potential national trigger. He is right to insist on inclusiveness. But these same concerns were dismissed when PF held power. Public distrust, institutional pressure, and partisan constitutional changes did not begin in 2025. Zambia has walked this road before.

What we see now is a familiar dance. Politicians rotate between defender and dissenter depending on whether they hold the instruments of power. When PF banned Lumumba, they did so in the name of “national security.” Today, they present themselves as champions of democratic caution beside the same man they once silenced.

The contradiction is not minor. It reveals how quickly power recalibrates the meaning of “principle.”

Zambia must be careful. Lumumba’s visit should not be turned into another partisan trophy. His message is meant for the nation, not for factions seeking affirmation. His deportation in 2018 should remind us that political leaders often weaponise ideas they once rejected. PF bigwigs praising tells  that political hypocrisy travels faster than reform.

If Lumumba’s voice is useful, then it should have been useful in 2018 too.

The real question is not why he came. It is why those who once banned his entry now embrace his counsel. Zambia deserves leaders who remain consistent whether in power or opposition. Lumumba’s warnings stand. So does the hypocrisy.

FROM THE LUCIFER OF ZAMBIA TO BIRTHDAY WISHES TO ARCHBISHOP ALICK BANDA

FROM THE LUCIFER OF ZAMBIA TO BIRTHDAY WISHES TO ARCHBISHOP BANDA

There is never a dull moment in Zambia’s political scene.

Not long ago, we were faced with an unusual tableau: the Zambian government levied serious accusations against Dr Alick Banda, the Archbishop of Lusaka, but a few days ago publicly extended birthday greetings to him.

This abrupt change from branding a prominent religious leader as the “Lucifer of Zambia” due to his critiques on governance to offering celebratory greetings has shocked the citizenry.

This event transcends a simple act of courtesy; it signals potential underlying machinations within the current political administration, raising questions about underlying strategic maneuvering, genuine reconciliation efforts, or a calculated attempt at political expediency ahead of the crucial 2026 general elections.

The relationship between the State and the Church under President Hakainde Hichilema has been characterized by periods of cooperation punctuated by sharp disagreements, especially when issues of corruption, human rights, and poor governance surface.

Archbishop Banda, as the head of the Catholic Church in the capital, commands significant moral authority, making his pronouncements weighty in public discourse.

The ruling party has accused him of being biassed, but his criticisms of what he sees as a decline in governance standards since 2021 are reflective of larger concerns held by civil society.

The initial harsh response from the government, labelling him with such a severe epithet, clearly indicated a zero-tolerance approach to what it perceived as unwarranted external interference or politically motivated attacks.

Such strong language suggests a desire to delegitimize the critic rather than engage with the substance of the critique, a common tactic in the current politically fraught environment.

The sudden change of heart from an organisation that has attacked him repeatedly, as indicated by the birthday wishes, is intriguing.

One prevalent interpretation centres on political expediency directed towards the 2026 elections.

Zambia’s political environment remains highly competitive, and securing endorsements or, at minimum, neutralizing significant opposition voices, becomes paramount for President Hichilema’s administration seeking a second term.

The Church, especially in Lusaka which has the highest number of registered voters in 2021, about 1, 243, 619, remains a powerful mobilization bloc, capable of influencing voter sentiment across various demographics.

By attempting to mend fences with the Archbishop of Lusaka, President Hichilema might be trying to pre-empt a unified front from the religious community against him in the coming electoral cycle.

https://youtu.be/FaB-pOIYam0?si=e8EaatJzE63j8i-u

This strategy of rapprochement could be aimed at softening the ground, demonstrating a willingness to engage maturely, even if the underlying tensions remain unresolved.

A second, perhaps more nuanced, explanation involves strategic reconciliation, potentially catalysed by recent shifts in the regional and domestic political matrix, notably the passing of former President Edgar Lungu, who was known to have a close relationship with the Archbishop.

The death of Lungu seem to have necessitated a realignment of allegiances and communications, creating space for new relational manoeuvres.

It appears that the prior animosity between Archbishop Banda and President Hichilema was largely due to the Archbishop’s political alliance with Lungu.  As a result, President Hichilema was persuaded to abandon his animosity towards the Archbishop and instead use Lungu’s permanent departure as an opportunity to re-establish his relationship with the Archbishop and Church leadership independent of prior political battles.

This may suggest a forward looking strategy aimed at stabilizing the national dialogue, acknowledging the Church’s permanent role regardless of who occupies the highest office, or it could be a simply political manoeuvre by President Hichilema to maximise political benefit in the 2026 election.

Furthermore, the recent diplomatic outreach to neighbouring Zimbabwe provides a compelling parallel instance of President Hichilema’s capacity for swift shifts in posture.

President Hichilema’s administration had previously characterized the previous Zimbabwean elections under President Emmerson Mnangagwa as a sham. Yet, last week he visited Zimbabwe for the inaugural Zambia–Zimbabwe Bi-National Commission characterised with unusual hugs and smiles with President Mnangagwa representing a pragmatic diplomatic re-engagement.

If the government is willing to engage with a leader whose election it questioned for national or regional stability reasons, the rationale for extending an olive branch to a domestic religious leader Archbishop Banda, albeit a critic, becomes understandable within a framework of pragmatic governance or political expediency.

These incidents point to a pattern in President Hichilema’s political approach, in which he is willing to temporarily suspend ideological rigidity in favour of strategic or relational necessity.  A clear example of President Hichilema’s mastery of realpolitik.

However, the inherent fragility of this reconciliation remains a crucial issue to follow with interest. Goodwill built upon expediency is often conditional. If Archbishop Banda continues his robust critique of governance—demanding accountability on issues such as tribalism, rule of law, corruption, debt restructuring, cost of living, or transparency—President Hichilema’s government’s patience may quickly wear thin.

The true test of this change of heart will be President Hichilema’s reaction to future, substantive criticism from the Archbishop, unless he has been compromised, which is unlikely, and will never criticise poor governance in President Hichilema’s administration.

Thus, the Zambian government’s gesture towards Archbishop Banda is pregnant with meaning, reflecting the complex interplay between political survival, strategic positioning for the next election, and the ongoing effort to manage powerful non state actors. Whether this signifies a genuine commitment to improving civil society relations or merely a temporary tactical retreat to secure political dividends remains uncertain. As the adage suggests, only time will truly reveal the depth and sincerity behind the sudden display of birthday goodwill.

From the political terraces, the visit to Zimbabwe and birthday wishes serve as a potent reminder that in the volatile arena of politics, alliances are fluid, and perceived adversaries can swiftly become necessary partners in the pursuit of political stability or electoral success.

KANTE’S $5M MIRACLE! FOOTBALL HERO BUILDS HOSPITAL AND PLANS TO PAY PATIENTS’ BILLS!

KANTE’S $5M MIRACLE! FOOTBALL HERO BUILDS HOSPITAL AND PLANS TO PAY PATIENTS’ BILLS!

Football superstar N’Golo Kanté has stunned the world once again not with his skills on the pitch, but with his heart. The famously humble midfielder has officially completed a $5 million state-of-the-art hospital in Mali, and in a jaw-dropping act of generosity, he plans to help cover the medical bills of patients who can’t afford treatment.

While other stars splash out on designer fashion and luxury toys, Kanté continues to live like the boy next door repeating outfits, wearing simple shoes and caring little for glamour. His focus? Lifting up his community.

Kanté once said he could never justify wearing a “$10,000 shoe when people back home are looking for $1 to eat.”

With generosity like this, it’s no surprise he’s seen as football’s only player with zero haters a global icon with a heart of pure gold.

President Hichilema to continue using commercial flights as presidential jet undergoes repairs

President Hichilema to continue using commercial flights as presidential jet undergoes repairs!

State House Chief Communication Specialist Clayson Hamasaka says President Hakainde Hichilema will continue using commercial flights for as long as the presidential plane remains unfit.

Mr. Hamasaka tells Phoenix News in an interview that the arrangement is practical and temporary, following established travel protocols, with robust security arrangements in place.

He has defended the President’s use of Proflight planes, citing it as a preferable local airline for the Head of State.

Mr. Hamasaka is urging citizens to focus on national development priorities, including food production, and encouraged Zambians to invest in farming to boost economic stability and resilience rather than focusing on the President’s mode of transport.

His comment comes in the wake of continued stakeholder concerns over the use of commercial flights by the Head of State as evidenced on his recent visit to Zimbabwe.
