ZAFFICO POSTS K262 MILLION PROFIT IN 2025

ZAFFICO POSTS K262 MILLION PROFIT IN 2025

…..interim results, down 30% from 2024

Lusaka… September 2, 2025 (SMART EAGLES)

ZAFFICO Plc has reported a profit after tax of K262.5 million for the half-year ended June 2025, representing a 30% decline compared to the K377.6 million recorded during the same period in 2024.

According to the interim results published on the Lusaka Securities Exchange (LuSE) monitored by Smart Eagles, revenue grew significantly by 71%, reaching K203.1 million from K118.7 million last year.

This was attributed to stronger sales performance and improved pricing. Gross profit rose to K132.9 million, up from K71.6 million in 2024.

However, the company’s results were weighed down by a sharp fall in the fair value of biological assets, which dropped from K503.1 million in 2024 to K273.0 million in 2025, as well as rising administrative expenses that climbed to K160.4 million from K152.9 million.

Finance costs also edged higher to K3.7 million compared to K3.5 million in 2024, further affecting profitability.

Profit before tax closed at K291.6 million, a notable reduction from K419.6 million last year.

The company incurred an income tax expense of K29.2 million, slightly lower than the K42.0 million reported in 2024.

Basic earnings per share (EPS) declined to K0.66 from K0.94 in the prior year, reflecting the overall dip in profitability despite stable shareholding at 400 million shares outstanding.

ZAFFICO, which manages Zambia’s industrial plantations, remains listed on LuSE and is seen as a key player in the forestry and timber industry.

The company assured shareholders that it continues to focus on operational efficiency and sustainable forestry management despite the earnings dip.

POLICE DENY ABDUCTION CLAIMS OVER FRANCIS KAPWEPWE

The Zambia Police Service has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that its officers abducted a suspect, Francis Kapwepwe, also known as “Why Me”, from Zimbabwe.

In a statement issued, Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga described the claims, attributed to a law firm that allegedly wrote to the Zimbabwean Embassy, as misleading.

Mr. Hamoonga said the apprehension of suspects is a lawful process and part of evidence to be presented during trial in a competent court of law.

“It is inappropriate and premature for the Zambia Police Service to discuss matters that constitute evidence outside the confines of a courtroom,” he said.

He emphasised that evidence is not presented through the media or to individuals demanding explanations, but before a court of law where due process is observed.

Mr. Hamoonga further stated that the Police Service would not be drawn into public debates or speculation on the matter, adding that the institution remains committed to the rule of law, due process, and regional collaboration in the fight against crime.

BOOMPLAY IS FAILING TO PAY ZAMBIAN ARTISTS BECAUSE ITS ZAMBIAN USERS ARE STREAMING MUSIC FOR FREE SAYS DIZMO

BOOMPLAY IS FAILING TO PAY ZAMBIAN ARTISTS BECAUSE ITS ZAMBIAN USERS ARE STREAMING MUSIC FOR FREE SAYS DIZMO

TOP Lusaka rapper DIZMO, while speaking to DJ Pressure T in a casual conversation, shared his opinion on the Boomplay issue. The rapper who admitted that he also hasn’t been paid his royalties by the streaming platform shared some of the reasons why that is the case.

The rapper highlighted that Boomplay’s failure to pay artists stems from its revenue generation model.

He said most of the streaming platform’s revenue come from companies like Trade Kings and others who advertise on their platform for a fee.

Dizmo went on to add that unlike other countries such as Nigeria where users are knowledgeable about credit cards and paying for music, Zambia is very much behind hence the streaming platform fails to generate enough revenue to pay artists.

“Ndrama zo lipila ma artists ziza choka kuti if people are streaming for free music on Boomplay muno mu Zambia?” Dizmo asked.

The rapper acknowledged that artists in other countries are facing similar challenges, and he has seen some of them removing their music from the streaming platform.

Dizmo then advised his fans and others to use digital streaming platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify, ITunes, etc, that actually pay artists on time and the right amount.

Black Woman Gets Bullied for Posting Selfies, But Refuses to Delete Them

Naomie Pilula, who is from Zambia, went viral after posting a selfie in June that drew more than 530,000 comments on Instagram. Most of them mocked her looks, with strangers questioning if she was real, accusing her of using filters, and even suggesting cosmetic surgery.

One comment in particular told her to “try rhinoplasty.” Others went further, calling her ugly and saying she didn’t deserve to be on the internet, she told People.

At first, Pilula posted a frustrated reply, but she later deleted it and turned to her older sister for advice. That talk made her realize some insecurities from the past still lingered, even though she thought she had moved on.

Instead of giving in, Pilula leaned on her Christian faith. She quoted scriptures like Psalm 139 and found strength in the story of Joseph in Genesis, where what was meant for harm turned into good. The backlash, she says, did not break her. Instead, it grew her following from 1,000 in April to more than 20,000 by August.

Her decision to leave the selfies online comes from a place of self-acceptance. “I love myself and I can be myself,” she says. “Like it or not, this is what I’m going to do.”

The hurt behind the bullying has roots in her past. Pilula grew up in Zambia as the youngest of seven siblings, where cultural standards praised curvier women. She was pressured to gain weight and teased about her slim frame. As a teenager, she was also ridiculed for her nose, which she proudly says she inherited from her father.

She later studied in Australia and New Zealand, often finding herself the only Black person in her classes. Those years taught her how cultural standards of beauty shift from place to place, but also how they can make someone feel isolated. Over time, she learned to accept her features and build confidence in who she was.

Now 37 years old and working as a lawyer in Zambia’s financial sector, Pilula says she won’t delete her selfies despite the negativity. For her, resilience is part of her message: what others intend to destroy can become a source of strength.

TikToker who attended Bonnie Blue’s infamous adult content challenge found dead in pond

A TikToker who attended one of adult content creator Bonnie Blue’s challenges in which she attempted to sleep with 1,000 men in 12 hours was found dead in a pond last month.

Ali Walker was found by a member of the public in Three Kings Pond, Mitcham, on 11 August and pronounced dead at the scene by the emergency services when they arrived.

The Met Police said in a statement: “Police were called at 9.45am on Monday, 11 August to Three Kings Pond, Mitcham following the concern for welfare of a man in the water.

“His next-of-kin has been informed. His death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Friends of the 43-year-old Walker have paid tribute to him, saying he was a ‘sweet, lovely man’ and that ‘so many people did love him’.

The TikToker attended Bonnie Blue’s controversial event but did not end up sleeping with her, explaining to the Mail he didn’t go through with it after he realised that around 30 to 40 other men in the queue would be watching them.

He said: “I had been told it was one-to-one sessions, so I presumed you got into a room with her one at a time, but when I got there, it was a free for all.”

The event was the subject of a divisive Channel 4 documentary titled 1000 Men and Me: The Bonnie Blue Story, and Walker called it ‘the most surreal experience’ of his life.

He said there were ‘so many guys there and I’m quite shy’, so he ‘didn’t get involved’, while other men who showed up were wearing balaclavas and Walker reckoned he was ‘probably one of the oldest there’.

Walker later claimed to have slept with Lily Phillips, saying he had been ‘number 1113 in the Lily Phillips 1113 man meet and jeet’.

His funeral took place on 14 August at Morden’s Baitul Futuh mosque, with the Daily Mail reporting his remains were later buried at a nearby cemetery.

On TikTok, he went by the name Ali Kingston University, chosen because he claims his English degree hadn’t helped him get a job.

He had found sporadic employment as a security guard for a McDonald’s, done some jobs cleaning toilets and quit being a binman on his first day.

Walker was more successful on TikTok, where he gained thousands of followers for his videos.

27-Year-Old Black Woman of Nine Children Shot to Death in Chicago

Tia Bell, a 27-year-old African American mother of nine children from Chicago, was shot and killed in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. She was among three people killed in separate shootings on the city’s West Side.

The attack happened around 10:47 p.m. on Thursday on West Gladys Avenue, as reported by ABC 7 Chicago. Police said Bell was standing outside with a 26-year-old man when a gunman opened fire. Bell was shot several times and rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she died.

The man with her was also hit and taken to the hospital in fair condition. A third victim, another 26-year-old man, later walked into a hospital with a graze wound linked to the same shooting.

Bell’s death has left nine children without their mother. Her family organized a GoFundMe to help provide for her children’s needs after her loss. It has so far raised nearly $1,000.

Earlier that night, another shooting took place on South Maplewood Avenue, where two men were killed. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified them as 38-year-old Deandre Russell and 28-year-old Nurrie Foy.

This week, Mayor Brandon Johnson and Police Superintendent Larry Snelling met with West Side residents to address the surge of gun violence in the area.

No arrests have been made. Detectives are still investigating both shootings.

Tennis player finds young boy who had cap ‘stolen’ by millionaire CEO in heartwarming moment after viral clip

Fans think tennis star Kamil Majchrzak reacted in the best way possible after the signed cap he gave to a young boy was snatched by a millionaire CEO.

The Polish player managed to pick up one of the biggest wins of his career against number nine seed Karen Khachanov at the US Open on Thursday (28 August).

Following the five-set thriller, he headed over to sign some autographs for fans in Court 11. However, as people at home were watching it all unfold, it appeared that the signed cap Majchrzak handed over to a young lad in the crowd was ‘stolen’ by an adult fan.

The incident was caught on camera, with the man being seen ignoring the visibly upset child and putting the Asics-branded hat in a bag.

Once the clip went viral on social media, Majchrzak found out what happened and tried to make things right with the boy and his family.

“Hey guys, could you help me find the kid from my match @usopen @eurosportpl,” he wrote on Instagram.

Not long after his post, Majchrzak managed to reunite with the young fan, who is named Brock.

Fans praised the sports star after he shared a series of photos and videos with Brock on Instagram.

“Good job on the player for showing the kid there can still be some justice in this world,” another added.

“The tennis player is Kamil Majchrzak and that’s a class act. Hats off to him,” a third penned.

Meanwhile, Majchrzak later revealed that the grown-up who took Brock’s hat was identified as Piotr Szczerek, a Polish millionaire CEO of paving company Drogbruk.

“Obviously it was some kind of confusion,” he said. “He also wanted to make things right, so I gave him the credentials for Brock’s mom on the same social media I was using to contact her.

“So, maybe he can make things right himself.”

Szczerek has today (September 1) confirmed that it was him in the video and admitted to making ‘a huge mistake’.

In a statement shared on Facebook, he said he ‘would like to clearly apologize to the injured boy, his family, as well as all the fans and the player himself’.

“In emotions, in the crowd rejoicing after the victory, I was convinced the tennis player tipped his hat in my direction – to my sons who have asked for autographs earlier,” Khachanov added.

“The misconception caused me to pull out my hand. Today I know I did something that looked like a deliberate collection of the child’s souvenir.

“This was not my intention, but it doesn’t change the fact I hurt the boy and disappointed the fans.”

Trump vows executive order on voter ID

President Donald Trump has once again turned his attention to reshaping U.S. election rules, declaring online late Saturday that he intends to push major changes through an executive order.

“Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End!!! Also, No Mail-In Voting, Except For Those That Are Very Ill, And The Far Away Military. USE PAPER BALLOTS ONLY!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

This is not Trump’s first attempt to mandate voter ID through executive power. Earlier this year, he issued a broad order on election integrity, but the directive was partly struck down in April by Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Kollar-Kotelly ruled that the president lacked constitutional authority to impose such rules, noting that election regulations fall to Congress and state governments. “Consistent with that allocation of power, Congress is currently debating legislation that would affect many of the changes the President purports to order,” the Clinton-appointed judge wrote. “No statutory delegation of authority to the Executive Branch permits the President to short-circuit Congress’s deliberative process by executive order.”

Despite legal setbacks, Trump continues to lean on popular support for voter ID. A Gallup survey taken just before the 2024 elections showed 84% of U.S. adults in favor of requiring identification at the polls, with 83% backing proof of citizenship for first-time voter registration.

The poll revealed strong bipartisan agreement, though with differing intensity: 67% of Democrats, 84% of independents, and 98% of Republicans supported mandatory voter ID. Similar margins were found on proof-of-citizenship requirements, with support from 66% of Democrats, 84% of independents, and 96% of Republicans.

Rep. Maxine Waters says 25th Amendment is needed to determine ‘what’s wrong’ with Trump

0

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., has urged the use of the 25th Amendment against President Donald Trump, warning that his recent actions show he is unfit to serve.

She made the remarks during an MSNBC discussion, where she condemned Trump’s sudden removal of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook

“It is time to call for Article [Amendment] 25 of the Constitution of the United States of America to determine his unfitness, to determine that something’s wrong with this president. And I would suggest that we move very aggressively to talk about the danger to this country and to our democracy and not play around with this because this is absolutely one of the most destructive things that this president could do,” Waters declared on The Weeknight.

Trump dismissed Cook on Monday, claiming she misrepresented mortgage details, an allegation she denies. Waters argued the move threatens not only Cook’s position but also the country’s financial stability.

“This stands to basically upend the entire economy. This stands to really deal with what is going to happen on Wall Street, what’s going to happen with interest rates, what’s going to happen with the president of the United States being able to make decisions that he will personally benefit from,” she continued.

Cook, in response, filed a lawsuit Thursday challenging her removal. She asserted that Trump lacked legal grounds to terminate her and requested a restraining order so she could keep her seat on the Fed board. The case is expected to move quickly toward the Supreme Court, escalating tensions between the White House and the Federal Reserve.

Waters stressed the urgency of acting against Trump: “And, so, the world, and certainly the United States, should be watching this very closely. As far as I’m concerned, we have to move very aggressively. It is not about lingering and trying to think that maybe the courts will help us.”

During the MSNBC discussion, host Symone Sanders-Townsend turned to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., for reaction to Waters’ 25th Amendment proposal.

“I think it’s jarring to hear Congresswoman Waters say it’s time for the 25th Amendment. But, I mean, presidents have been impeached for much less,” Sanders-Townsend observed.

Wasserman Schultz argued Trump’s real target was Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. “Donald Trump’s real preference is to fire Jerome Powell. But he knows that that’s a bridge too far,” she said.

She accused Trump of undermining the Fed by targeting Cook instead: “So, what he’s doing instead is, he’s taking a monkey wrench, and he’s going to go in and try to meddle with the component parts of the Federal Reserve by trying to fire Lisa Cook on something that was maintained in the court case today that she’s not even being investigated for. By the way, the so-called fraud that she is being accused of, she didn’t even get preferred interest rates on any of the mortgages that she obtained, which demonstrates that she didn’t break the law. It’s preposterous.”

Preliminary data reveals 1.2 million immigrants exit U.S. labor force under Trump

0

In California’s Central Valley, Lidia bends over rows of ripe tomatoes, but the harvest is not her only concern. More than two decades after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border without authorization, she still worries that a routine traffic stop could unravel the life she built.

“The worry is they’ll pull you over when you’re driving and ask for your papers,” said Lidia, who asked that only her first name be used out of fear of deportation. “We need to work. We need to feed our families and pay our rent.”

Her anxiety echoes far beyond the fields. As Americans mark Labor Day with parades honoring workers, experts warn that stepped-up immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump is reshaping the U.S. labor force.

According to preliminary Census Bureau data reviewed by the Pew Research Center, more than 1.2 million immigrants left the workforce between January and July. That decline spans both undocumented workers and legal residents, and it coincides with the first overall drop in the U.S. immigrant population after years of growth that pushed the number of undocumented immigrants to a record 14 million in 2023.

Immigrants account for nearly one in five U.S. workers, Pew researcher Stephanie Kramer explained, with especially heavy representation in agriculture, construction, and service jobs. “About 45% of workers in farming, fishing and forestry are immigrants,” she noted. “About 30% of all construction workers are immigrants and 24% of service workers are immigrants.”

Kramer cautioned that the data is still preliminary. “It’s unclear how much of the decline we’ve seen since January is due to voluntary departures to pursue other opportunities or avoid deportation, removals, underreporting or other technical issues,” she said. “However, we don’t believe that the preliminary numbers indicating net-negative migration are so far off that the decline isn’t real.”

The tightening of immigration rules has rippled through fields and construction sites alike. In McAllen, Texas, Elizabeth Rodriguez of the National Farmworker Ministry described how raids froze activity during harvest. “In May, during the peak of our watermelon and cantaloupe season, it delayed it. A lot of crops did go to waste,” she said.

In Ventura County, California, farmer Lisa Tate has also seen the impact. While she is hesitant to blame immigration enforcement outright, she said farm crews shrank after a wave of ICE arrests. “People were being taken out of laundromats, off the side of the road,” Tate said.

Rodriguez added that construction sites in her region “are completely dead” as ICE increasingly targets day laborers. “We have a large labor force that is undocumented,” she said. “We’ve seen ICE particularly targeting construction sites and attempting to target mechanic and repair shops.”

National figures confirm the downturn. An analysis from the Associated General Contractors of America found that construction jobs declined in roughly half of U.S. metropolitan areas, with California hit particularly hard. “Contractors report they would hire more people if only they could find more qualified and willing workers and tougher immigration enforcement wasn’t disrupting labor supplies,” said the group’s chief economist, Ken Simonson.

The labor squeeze extends to health care as well. Kramer of Pew pointed out that immigrants make up 43% of home health aides. Arnulfo De La Cruz, president of SEIU 2015 in California, said the risks are enormous: “What’s going to happen when millions of Americans can no longer find a home care provider? What happens when immigrants aren’t in the field to pick our crops? Who’s going to staff our hospitals and nursing homes?”

Despite Trump’s pledge to focus removals on “dangerous criminals,” most immigrants detained by ICE have no criminal record. Still, stricter enforcement has sharply reduced illegal border crossings, cutting off what economists say was a major driver of U.S. job growth.

“The influx across the border from what we can tell is essentially stopped, and that’s where we were getting millions and millions of migrants over the last four years,” said Pia Orrenius, a labor economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. “That has had a huge impact on the ability to create jobs.”

For Lidia, however, the debate is personal. Now 36 and raising three U.S.-born children, she fears being sent back to a country her kids have never known. “I don’t know if I’ll be able to bring my kids,” she told the Associated Press. “I’m also very concerned I’d have to start from zero. My whole life has been in the United States.”

The enigmatic demise of Samora Machel: unraveling a controversy that shaped African liberation

The death of Samora Machel, Mozambique’s first president, on October 19, 1986, remains one of the most poignant and debated events in the history of African liberation.

More than three decades later, the circumstances surrounding the crash of his presidential aircraft near Mbuzini, South Africa, continue to provoke speculation, sorrow, and reflection on the broader geopolitical struggles that defined southern Africa during the late 20th century.

This tragedy did not just mark the loss of a leader; it exposed the fierce and often deadly contest between apartheid South Africa and the liberation movements that sought to dismantle it.

Samora Machel was not merely a political figure; he was a symbol of resilience and pan-African solidarity.

As the founding leader of FRELIMO (Front for the Liberation of Mozambique), he guided the country to independence from Portuguese colonial rule in 1975, becoming its first president.

His leadership was characterized by a firm commitment to Marxist principles, social justice, and the empowerment of the oppressed.

More importantly, Machel was an unyielding opponent of apartheid South Africa, offering support and sanctuary to liberation movements such as the African National Congress (ANC) and the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC).

His stance made him a direct threat to the apartheid regime, which viewed Mozambique’s independent government as an ideological adversary and a logistical base for armed resistance.

The official explanation for the crash, put forth by the apartheid government, was that pilot error caused the Tupolev Tu-134 to stray off course, ultimately leading to the fatal accident.

Their inquiry suggested that navigational mistakes brought the plane into South African airspace, where it crashed into a mountain near Mbuzini, close to the Mozambican border.

This narrative, however, failed to convince many, especially in Mozambique, the Soviet Union, and across African nations.

The mistrust stemmed not only from the political context but also from the nature of the apartheid regime itself—an administration notorious for covert operations, sabotage, and assassination attempts against its enemies.

The theory that gained prominence among critics of the official account is the “false beacon” theory. According to this theory, South African security forces deliberately set up a deceptive VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) beacon, broadcasting false navigational signals.

This tactic would have misled the aircraft’s instruments and caused it to veer dangerously off its intended flight path.

Such a sophisticated plot aligns with documented instances of South African intelligence operations during the apartheid era, which included assassinations and destabilization campaigns against neighboring states and liberation movements. While direct proof of this theory remains elusive, it has been bolstered by testimonies from survivors and independent investigators who questioned the integrity of the South African inquiry.

The death of Samora Machel had profound ramifications for Mozambique and the region. Politically, it dealt a severe blow to the nascent Mozambican state.

Machel’s leadership was a unifying force amidst the country’s ongoing civil war between FRELIMO and RENAMO (Mozambican National Resistance), a rebel group that had received covert support from neighboring Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and apartheid South Africa. His death exacerbated instability, weakening FRELIMO’s morale and strategic coherence.

Economically, Mozambique was plunged deeper into hardship as the civil war intensified, with infrastructure destruction and displacement of populations.

The loss of Machel also signaled to other liberation movements that their leaders were vulnerable, reinforcing the brutal reality of apartheid’s reach beyond South African borders.

Internationally, the incident heightened tensions between the apartheid regime and the global community.

The Soviet Union and its allies condemned the crash as an act of assassination, framing it within the broader Cold War context of proxy battles in Africa.

The Western world’s response was more cautious, reflecting the complexities of geopolitical alliances and the delicate balance of power during the 1980s.

However, the tragedy galvanized African nations’ resolve to oppose apartheid more vigorously, leading to increased support for sanctions and diplomatic pressure against South Africa.

The legacy of Samora Machel transcends his untimely death.

He is remembered as a visionary leader who embodied the aspirations of African self-determination and unity.

His efforts to promote literacy, healthcare, and social equality in Mozambique set benchmarks for post-colonial governance on the continent.

Moreover, his commitment to pan-Africanism inspired generations of activists and leaders who continue to draw strength from his example.

The unresolved mystery of his death serves as a painful reminder of the high stakes involved in the struggle against oppression.

Reflecting on Machel’s demise, the African proverb cited often rings true: “Until the lion tells his story, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” In this case, the “lion” is Machel himself, whose voice was tragically silenced.

Yet, through the memories preserved by his people and the ongoing quest for truth, his story challenges the narratives imposed by those in power.

It compels us to scrutinize history with a critical eye and acknowledge the sacrifices made in the pursuit of freedom.

In recent years, efforts to revisit the crash site and re-examine the evidence have been sporadic but persistent.

Technological advances in forensic science and aviation investigation offer hope that one day a clearer picture might emerge.

Until then, the death of Samora Machel remains a powerful symbol of the complex and often dangerous path toward liberation and justice in Africa.

It reminds us that history is not merely a record of events but a living dialogue between past and present, shaped by courage, memory, and the enduring quest for truth.

19-year-old university student st@bbed to d3ath by her boyfriend in South Africa

0

A 19-year-old first-year student at the University of Venda (UNIVEN), Vhulondo Nevhukalanga, tragically lost her life after being fatally stabbed by her alleged boyfriend, Sifundo Masindi, a 20-year-old fellow student.

The incident took place on Friday, August 29, 2025, at an off-campus student residence in Ngovhela, Limpopo Province, South Africa. According to reports, the two entered the suspect’s room together before sounds of distress were heard shortly afterward.

Campus security officers responded quickly and forced entry into the locked room, where they found Vhulondo with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect then attempted to take his own life by jumping from a second-floor window. He sustained injuries and is currently under police guard in hospital.

Two knives believed to have been used in the attack were recovered from the scene. The Limpopo police confirmed that Masindi has been charged with murder and will appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on September 1, 2025.

Vhulondo came from Tshitomboni (Makovha) village near Thohoyandou. Her family expressed deep shock at her death, stating they were not aware she was in a relationship and had high hopes for her academic future.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bernard Nthambeleni, suspended academic activities on September 1 to allow students to attend the court proceedings in support of the victim. The university also extended condolences to the family and is offering psychosocial support to affected students.

Educational activist Hendrick Makaneta condemned the incident and urged universities to strengthen mental health services and promote healthy relationship education among students.

Tennis player breaks down after seeing ex-boyfriend in crowd at US Open ‘where he shouldn’t be’

0

A tennis match at the US Open ended up being briefly delayed after one of the players broke down upon seeing someone in the crowd.

Karolína Muchová has her Round of 16 match against Marta Kostyuk pencilled in for today (1 September), but a couple of matches ago she was thrown off her game by the appearance of her ex-boyfriend.

Down 4-1 in the first set and serving, Muchová became clearly upset as she started wiping away tears and gestured towards the crowd.

She apologised for the delay in play and later wiped her face with a towel before returning to the match, which she went on to win in three sets.

Muchová claimed another three set victory a couple of days later (30 August) to get to the Round of 16, and she has since explained that the reason for her being distracted during her match was because of her ex showing up ‘where he shouldn’t be’.

According to The Athletic, the tennis player later explained at a press conference: “It wasn’t tennis-related.

“l don’t really like talking about it. But opposite my bench, my ex-boyfriend sat down. He sometimes shows up at places where he shouldn’t be.

“That startled me a bit. I told him to leave, he didn’t, but later he did go. It was hard to focus in that moment.”

Players can ask for certain people to be blacklisted from attending their matches but Muchová has not done so, and after her weekend win she said she was ‘alright’ and that ‘everything is good’.

She didn’t make a report about the incident and said she didn’t know if something similar would happen again, but she did feel safe going onto the court at the US Open.

This is not the first time a tennis player has become distressed after spotting an unwelcome presence in the stands.

Muchová was actually on court playing against Emma Raducanu at the Dubai Tennis Championships when the 2021 US Open champion had a ‘difficult experience’ when she saw a man who had displayed ‘fixated behaviour’ towards her.

Raducanu was left in tears and took shelter by the umpire’s chair as she discussed the matter with officials.

Muchová had helped comfort her opponent in the moment and was called ‘a great sport’ by Raducanu for the way she’d handled things.

The man was eventually removed from the court and had reportedly approached Raducanu in public and given her a letter the day before that match. After being ejected from the match he later attempted to buy Wimbledon tickets but his name was flagged and he was prevented from doing so.

Elon Musk weighs in on England flag debate as tensions rise in UK

0

Elon Musk has been sharing his views on the rise of England flags being displayed across the nation.

There are also an increased number of ‘patriotic’ marches taking place across the UK as a result, as news on the increase of immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees has been reported by the media.

Groups responsible for putting up St. George’s flags and Union flags up and down the country recently told the BBC that it’s a move driven by pride and patriotism. Others believe that it’s a provocative move in a period where tensions are sky-high when it comes to the topic of immigration in the UK.

Certain Reform UK county councils in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Kent have stated that they would not remove flags unless they were posing a danger.

The Labour-led City of York Council stated that would not take down Union and England flags, but raised concerns of placing them on lamp-posts, ‘without appropriate approvals or equipment’.

The St. George’s Cross was first used by the Italian city of Genoa in the 12th century as a tribute to their patron saint.

England adopted the flag to deter enemies from its maritime fleet in the 13th century, as it is claimed they were under the protection of Genoa’s fleet before becoming the flag which now represents England.

The Italian city of Milan also uses the cross design as its symbol, having done so centuries before England.

This link between Genoa and England was strengthened in the late 19th century, where British citizens founded the Genoa Cricket and Athletic Club in the Italian city. It led to Genoa’s kit reveal for 2025/26, in tribute to the link, taking place on a south London council estate.

Why are people putting up England flags?
Following the Lionesses’ Euros campaign in July, which ended in another victory, St. George’s flags could be seen more and more as a sign of support for the team. But weeks after the competition finished, certain areas of the UK still sported these flags from every lamp-post in their streets.

Many people on social media welcomed the sight of these flags, as groups started to form online with the goal of showing pride for the country’s history and achievements. However, these flags have also been used as emblems for far-right political movements, which made some people in these hotspots to feel uncomfortable.

More flags have popped up around the country, though both West Mercia Police and West Midlands Police have started a criminal damage investigation over the painting of traffic islands.

The movement has a name: ‘Operation Raise the Colours’, which has been supported by several far-right figures, such as Tommy Robinson.

In fact, over £20,000 has been raised to support a campaign to put flags up around Birmingham.

What has Keir Starmer said about it?
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has remained consistent on his views throughout the summer, as an official spokesman shared what he thinks about the increase in flags raised in the UK.

“I think the PM has always talked about his pride of being British, the patriotism he feels,” the spokesman stated.

He went on: “Patriotism will always be an important thing to him.

“We put up English flags all around Downing Street every time the English football team – women’s and men’s – are out trying to win games for us.”

The comment comes amid criticism over his approach to immigration, as the right believe more strict measures can be put in place to limit the number of people moving to the UK.

What has Elon Musk said about it?
Elon Musk, multi-billionaire and CEO of X and Tesla, has taken it upon himself to get involved in the political matter (once again).

Reposting an article speaking about ‘two-tier’ policing in Britain comparing two completely different situations which resulted in a Pro-Palestine supporter being let free and a white woman being arrested, Musk felt the need to share his thoughts.

“Two Tier Keir,” the former US government advisor wrote.

However, a quick Google search will reveal that the Palestinian protestors who were seen climbing atop war memories could face three months in prison and a £1,000 fine following plans from the home secretary back in 2023, when the clip circulated.

The Home Office said that climbing on war memorials is now a public order offence to ‘stop protesters disrespecting those who have given their lives for our country’.

As for the woman draping the Union flag, Essex Police clarified: “The arrest is on suspicion of breaching a Section 14 order

“That order set out specific areas where protest activity could take place, which did not include the Civic Centre.”

Assistant chief constable Stuart Hooper clarified: “To be very clear, despite suggestions we’ve seen on social media, she was not arrested for flying a Union Flag.”

Musk has also shared a number of videos where people are protesting immigration, or championing their nation’s flags, calling for action from nations.

Trump conspiracy theory spirals despite President brushing off viral death rumours with strong statement

Conspiracy theories about Donald Trump’s alleged death are still running wild, despite the world getting some proof of life over the weekend.

The US President stepped out to play a few rounds of golf on Saturday (30 August) in Sterling, Virginia, after a two-day hiatus from the spotlight.

As we barely go a day without a dose of Donald Trump being shoved down our throats, people were quick to think the worst when he wasn’t seen in public for a 48-hour period.

Hashtags such as ‘#whereistrump and #TRUMPDIED were trending on X from Friday (29 August), and given the recent goings on across the pond, it’s no wonder.

Concerns were raised for the commander-in-chief, 79, last week after he was spotted supposedly trying to cover up bruises on his hand with some seriously unblended foundation.

Then, his vice president JD Vance made a series of strange comments about the prospect of stepping into the President’s shoes if a ‘terrible tragedy’ struck during Trump’s term.

On top of all this, people spotted a flurry of pizza orders in the area where the White House is situated after having a look at a website which tracks this activity, called the ‘Pentagon pizza index’.

The staggering surge in slices being sent out suggested that a major incident might have been taking place, according to social media users, as they believed it indicated that officials were fuelling themselves for a long night.

The last time there was a surge in pizza orders was back in June, when Trump gave the green light for the US to launch a bombing mission against Iran, The Guardian reported.

And let’s not forget how the White House also revealed Trump is now living with a ‘chronic’ condition called chronic venous insufficiency in July – a fact which only adds fuel to the ‘Trump is dead’ fire.

People online added all this up and came to the conclusion that the President of the United States has passed away, prompting the man himself to speak out and insist he is still alive and kicking.

Yesterday (31 August), he took to his platform Truth Social to reshare a post regarding the conspiracy theories about his alleged demise.

The original post from right-wing political commentator Rogan O’Handley read: “Joe Biden would go multiple days at a time without any public appearances and the media would say he’s ‘sharp’ and ‘top of his game’.

“Meanwhile, he was wearing diapers and napping. President Trump in more public work hours than any other POTUS in US history and media freaks out if he disappears for 24 hours.”

Trump also declared: “NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE.”

Since, the President has been spotted enjoying some golf at the Trump National Golf Club in Virginia, which you’d think would finally put the rumours of his death to bed.

However, a quick scan of social media will inform you that conspiracy theories about the President’s passing are still running rampant.

Reddit users seem to reckon there’s no smoke without fire – and have even suggested that a body double might have been stepping in for Trump on Saturday.

A lot of people believe that he might have taken a leaf out of Vladimir Putin’s book and has roped in a lookalike, as the Russian leader has also been dogged by claims that he uses doppelgängers.

One person said that a ‘surprisingly high percentage of Americans would qualify’ as a body double, while another added: “The South Park double was pretty damn close, they should hire him.”

A third wrote: “It is a body double! Dude playing Trump played the round of golf and could actually play, without having to cheat…dead give away!”

A fourth chimed in: “Look at his photos today: Notice how he’s with two diminutive people (grandchildren) so that when people look at him, they can’t speculate accurately on his height?

“Additionally…dude in the photos doesn’t look like Trump. Straight up.”

While a fifth speculated: “Trump is learning from Putin. Things are getting sketchy.”

IF PF DOESN’T SOBER UP AND COME TO TERMS WITH CHABINGA, THERE WILL BE NO PF ON THE BALLOT PAPER NEXT YEAR

Chabinga, as comical as he may sound, has the laws of our nation in his hands through Miles Sampa. If the other PF camp does not cooperate with him, there will be no presidential candidate under PF next year.

This is a problem incubated and hatched by the PF administration itself. What PF has forgotten is that they had no regard for the laws of Zambia, and this is why they now want to downplay this reality.

The sooner you cooperate with Chabinga, the better. Otherwise, you will just continue crying that HH has grabbed PF. There is nothing like that anyone who says so is completely misguided.

The moment Miles Sampa legally became PF president and legally ushered in other leaders such as Chabinga, that’s where everything began. Was Miles Sampa wrong?

Absolutely not. Remember, money K200,000 each was collected from candidates, and PF leaders scammed these candidates. Was it HH who collected this money for the convention?

This is free advice. Otherwise, if you don’t come back to your senses, there will be no PF on the ballot paper next year. Don’t say you were not warned.

POLITICAL ANALYST SAYS ECONOMIC FUNDAMENTALS NOT ENOUGH FOR UPND’S 2026 PROSPECTS

POLITICAL ANALYST SAYS ECONOMIC FUNDAMENTALS NOT ENOUGH FOR UPND’S 2026 PROSPECTS

Political Analyst Francis Chipili has charged that the UPND government should only base their confidence in returning back to power in 2026 on the opposition being unstable and not economic fundamentals.

Mr. Chipili, who is also Zambian institute of Governance and Civil Liberties Advocacy Platform Executive Director, tells Phoenix News that the Zambian economy is shrinking, with citizens struggling to cope with the high cost of living.

Mr. Chipili also notes that despite the stability in fuel pump prices over the last few months, the commodity still remains high and is contributing to the high cost of production in the country.

He has further bemoaned the increased hours of load shedding and has wondered why government has continued exporting electricity when there is need to prioritize local consumption.

Mr. Chipili has since urged government to implement policies that respond to the needs of the people, focusing on economic fundamentals.

EMV EXPOSES COVER-UP IN ZAMBIA’S WORST ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER

EMV EXPOSES COVER-UP IN ZAMBIA’S WORST ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER

By Brian Matambo, Lusaka, Zambia

On EMV Tonight, Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba dedicated the broadcast to what may be Zambia’s darkest environmental catastrophe: the February 18, 2025 collapse of a Sino Metals tailings dam that spilled more than 1.5 million metric tons of toxic waste into the Mbashi and Kafue rivers.

Government statements have downplayed the crisis, with ministers insisting the water is safe and staging photo-ops of officials drinking tap water. Independent audits by South African firm Drizzid, commissioned at a cost of $4.5 million, and an investigative report by Channel 4 UK, point to a disaster on a global scale. Commentators compared it to Chernobyl, the Ok Tedi River disaster in Papua New Guinea, and the BP Deepwater Horizon spill.

The Kafue River sustains over 7 million Zambians, including Lusaka’s water supply, farming communities, fisheries, and game parks. Scientific findings reveal dangerous concentrations of arsenic, cyanide, lead, mercury, cadmium, and uranium, capable of causing long-term organ damage, birth defects, and cancers.

GOVERNMENT RESPONSE UNDER FIRE
Despite mounting evidence, ministers of Information, Water Development, and Green Economy assured citizens that the water is safe, citing over 200 samples tested. Compensation of 800 kwacha per family was handed out in Chambeshi, with reports that recipients were forced to sign gag orders barring them from pursuing legal claims.

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) Director General resigned abruptly, reportedly under pressure after refusing to participate in what callers on EMV described as a “cover-up.” Allegations of bribery and intimidation have swirled around government officials, raising suspicions that regulatory independence has been compromised.

INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE MOUNTS
The US Embassy in Zambia issued two evacuation notices in June and August, warning its nationals to leave the pollution zone and describing even breathing the air as dangerous. Washington has directly accused Beijing of orchestrating a cover-up through Sino Metals, a subsidiary of China Nonferrous Metals Mining Group. At the same time, Zambia is seeking to restructure $5.6 billion in Chinese debt, a fact many fear has weakened the government’s resolve to act.

PUBLIC OUTRAGE
Callers to EMV expressed anger, despair, and betrayal. Some reported rising medical bills, children suffering unexplained dizziness and heart palpitations, and livestock deaths. One priest likened the crisis to Chernobyl, warning of intergenerational health impacts. Others called it “Zambia’s worst environmental betrayal,” accusing the government of “manslaughter by silence.”

DEMAND FOR ACTION
Ambassador Mwamba and panelists demanded an independent international audit of the disaster, immediate medical screening of affected communities, and a transparent compensation framework. They stressed that heavy metals do not dissipate, meaning contamination will persist for centuries unless large-scale cleanup, estimated at 100 trucks of lime daily for a year, is undertaken.

“This government runs on propaganda and lies,” Mwamba said. “They cannot bury such a disaster. To cover it up is criminal, and it places the lives of millions of Zambians in danger.”

As Zambia heads into the rainy season, fears grow that toxins will spread further downstream, deepening the humanitarian and ecological toll.

THERE’S NO GUARANTEE YOUNG PEOPLE WOULD MAKE BETTER LEADERS – SIMUTANYI

By: News Diggers

POLITICAL Analyst Neo Simutanyi says age does not make one a better leader, and there is no guarantee that young people can be better leaders compared to older people.

Simutanyi says that anyone aspiring to lead the country must belong to a political platform that can win power, adding that a new political party formed today cannot possibly win elections. On Monday, Nkana Independent member of parliament Binwell Mpundu said Zambians make the mistake of voting for the same people.

He stated that it was time for old leaders to sit on the sidelines and offer guidance while young people took over

NAKACHINDA, SAMPA BELONG TO TONSE ALLIANCE – CHABINGA

Mafinga Member of Parliament, Robert Chabinga, has charged that the faction of the Patriotic Front (PF) led by Raphael Nakacinda and Matero MP Miles Sampa is not actually a part of the PF.

Instead, he argues that they are aligned with the Tonse Alliance. Addressing the media today at his base in Mafinga constituency, Mr. Chabinga, who is currently serving as the acting president of the PF, revealed that Miles Sampa, the lawmaker from Matero, distanced himself from both Chabinga and his Secretary General, Mr. Morgan Ngona, under circumstances that remain unclear.

Mr. Chabinga, who is also the leader of the opposition in parliament, has urged Matero lawmaker Miles Sampa and Mr. Rapheal Nakacinda to refrain from involving Republican President Hakainde Hichilema in the internal disputes of the PF.

Mr. Chabinga has called on all PF members, as well as those interested in the PF presidency, to be patient and allow the courts to make a ruling on a case concerning the eligibility of the convention that took place on August 23, 2023.

Mr. Chabinga has urged everyone planning to hold a convention before the court’s ruling to refrain from doing so and to show respect for the judicial process.

Victims of Kafue Pollution, Demand $9.7billion Compensation

Victims of Kafue Pollution, Demand $9.7billion Compensation

Over 47 households from Kalulushi’s Kalusale Community have issued a demand letter to Sino Metals, seeking the immediate payment of K220 million as interim compensation to facilitate their relocation, resettlement, medical screening, independent testing, treatment, and livelihood restoration.

The households are also demanding payment of $9.7 billion for the establishment of a Victim and Environmental Compensation and Rehabilitation Fund which will be jointly managed by the government and independent actors, under mutually agreed terms, to cover contingent reparations, as well as medical and psychological assistance for affected victims.

In a letter dated 28th August 2025, issued by Melisa and Partners Legal Partners on behalf of the residents, the residents have also called on Sino Metals to fully comply with the Environmental Restoration Order issued by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) on 21st February 2025.

The residents have warned that failure to meet the demands within 10 days of receiving the letter will result in the commencement of legal proceedings against the company.

Mayor is supposed to be bigger than MPs who are only in-charge of a constituency- Dickson Jere

The Mayor Position
By Dickson Jere

In 2003, I was among those appointed by President Levy Mwanawasa, SC, to draft the country’s constitution under the Mung’omba Constitution Review Commission (CRC). We toured the country – all districts and constituencies – to get views of Zambians on what they wanted to be included in the Constitution.

The position of Mayor attracted attention. The majority of petitioners insisted that this position should be elected by direct vote (universal suffrage) and be made “Executive”. This means that the Mayor should be the head of the City and be in-charge of the day-to-day operation as the Chief Executive Officer.

In our Report, on page 518, we recommended thus;

“The Commission is further of the view that it would be appropriate for popularly elected Mayors/Council Chairpersons to have EXECUTIVE power as demanded by some petitioners,” our Report read.

This Report was subject to discussion at the National Constitution Conference (NCC), which later culminated into the 2016 Constitution amendments. Of particular interest is Article 154 of the Constitution which captured our recommendation and made Mayors to be elected by universal suffrage as opposed to the old system of Councillors electing Mayors. However, the amendment omitted the key word “EXECUTIVE” power of the Mayors. That is what has caused the current problem.

In short, Mayors are supposed to be the big shots of the City. All decisions regarding the City are supposed to fall on their desk. Mayors are supposed to be bigger than Members of Parliament. In fact, MPs are supposed to be fighting to be Mayors and not the other way round.

Look at Lusaka City, which has seven (7) Constituencies. All the seven MPs are supposed to be under the Mayor in terms of development. Look at how powerful the Mayor of Paris is. And the Mayor of New York. In some countries, Mayors of big cities jump from their positions straight to contest the presidency! That is how big the position is!

Maybe, someone needs to move the Constitutional Court and argue that the introduction of direct vote for Mayors was coupled with the introduction of executive powers.

The Mayors needs good salary and incentives far more than MPs. Then we can make this position attractive as was envisaged by the Constitution.

Simply put, the Mayor is supposed to be bigger than MPs who are only in-charge of a constituency while the Mayor looks after the entire city. That was the rationale of that amendment in 2016. We need to give the Mayors there powers!

FREE QUALITY EDUCATION OUR SOLUTION FREE EDUCATION MUST BE FREE- Fred M’membe

FREE QUALITY EDUCATION OUR SOLUTION FREE EDUCATION MUST BE FREE

What the UPND has been calling free education is really not free education as such – it is something else, something that may resemble free education but is not. Free education must be free education.

For us, free education entails free primary education for all. It means an obligation to develop secondary education accessible to all with the progressive introduction of free quality secondary education, as well as an obligation to develop equitable access to higher education, with the progressive introduction of free quality higher education. We will allocate 25 percent of the national budget to developing quality free education in Zambia.

To show you what’s happening today that compromises the idea of free quality education, let’s look at UPND’s so called free education:

1. FUNDING: Providing free education to citizens requires significant financial resources. Schools are underfunded and are barely surviving. For instance, there is no free education for pupils in the boarding schools. Instead, the government has dictated that parents must pay K1,000 (one thousand kwacha) per child per term. This money goes towards the procurement of foodstuff for 90 days. Now, divide 90 days into K1,000. It gives you K11.11. Divide this K11.11 into three meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner). It gives you K3.70. What kind of meal can one buy for K3.70? How are head teachers in boarding schools managing things? They have removed fish, beef, and chicken from the menu. Children are eating soya chunks and cabbage.

The government only sends K200 (two hundred kwacha) to all secondary schools (both boarding and day) per child per term, to cater for teaching and learning materials, maintenance of infrastructure, administrative issues, allowances for staff, orphan and vulnerable children, and co-curricular activities. So a basic school in a rural area, which has 80 pupils in grades 8 and 9, receives no more than K16,000 (sixteen thousand kwacha) per term. These meagre amounts sent to schools have terms and conditions, just like the IMF. A percentage meant for the maintenance of infrastructure, for example, cannot be used for the procurement of foodstuff, even in the event that the school has run out of food. That would constitute a misapplication of funds. Head teachers are struggling a lot, and most of them have developed hypertension.

2. INFRASTRUCTURE AND RESOURCES: The UPND government has only introduced so-called free education to learners in day schools from grades 8 to 12. This has created a challenge of inadequate infrastructure and limited educational resources, such as textbooks, digital technologies, and school facilities. Expanding free education while ensuring quality requires substantial investment in infrastructure development and resource allocation. The haphazard CDF arrangement is not helping in any way as regards infrastructure development in education. This situation calls for a massive construction of schools across the country.

3. TEACHER SHORTAGE AND QUALITY: Recruiting and retaining qualified teachers is essential for the success of free education. The employment of 30,496 in 2022 was a very good effort. However, simple research has shown that many teachers who were posted in rural areas have started going back to urban areas through transfers based on political connections. Schools in remote areas are still lacking teachers, compromising free education.

4. EQUITY AND ACCESS: Although free education aims to promote equitable access, there are disparities in accessing education, particularly in remote or marginalised areas. Ensuring that all children have equal opportunities requires addressing barriers, such as distance, gender disparities, and cultural factors that may inhibit access to education.

5. EFFECTS OF THE RISING COST OF LIVING: Before Mr Hichilema’s so-called free education, parents in rural areas were paying K150 per term, while those in urban areas were paying K200 per term per child. In addition, the government was sending schools grants every term. Whatever benefits could have accrued from the removal of the K150 and K250 school fees per term have completely been eroded by the increasing cost of living – the high cost of mealie-meal, relish, and transport prices.

6. PROPAGANDA: The dissemination of biased and misleading information in order to shape public opinion by the UPND government has really destroyed education. Taken at face value, one would think Zambia was doing very well in the education sector. But frankly speaking, the so called free education has destroyed the little quality that remained before the UPND took office.

The government does not talk about things that matter most, such as literacy levels, learner performance, skills development, teacher motivation, and so on. It is busy manipulating and controlling public opinion by presenting selective information. Creating a biased narrative that aims to persuade people in favour of its policy of fake free education won’t do. The government paints a picture as though it introduced free education for the first time in Zambia. It portrays to the public like it is spending a lot of money on free education. This is a lie, a deception; and at the rate we are moving, we risk having an education of very low quality.

TRANSPORT MINISTER DISSOLVES ZACL BOARD TO ALIGN WITH GOVERNMENT’S STRATEGIC FOCUS

TRANSPORT MINISTER DISSOLVES ZACL BOARD TO ALIGN WITH GOVERNMENT’S STRATEGIC FOCUS

By Wagon Media
Lusaka – 1st September 2025

In a bold move to realign Zambia’s aviation sector with national development goals, Minister of Transport and Logistics, Hon. Museba Frank Tayali, has dissolved the Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) Board of Directors, effective immediately.

The Minister said the decision is aimed at ensuring that the governance of ZACL fully supports the government’s strategic objectives for the transport and logistics sector, particularly the aviation subsector.

ZACL oversees the management and operation of the country’s major airports, including Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, and plays a vital role in facilitating air travel, trade, and economic growth. The restructuring of its board is expected to strengthen operational efficiency and drive key infrastructure projects.

“We are in a new era of transport infrastructure development, and it is imperative that all our institutions are guided by a board that can fully support and execute the government’s vision,” Hon. Tayali said.

He thanked the outgoing directors for their service and wished them success in future endeavors. The process to re-constitute the board is already underway, with new appointments expected to be announced soon.

This decision reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring robust governance and oversight in strategic state institutions, aligning them with Zambia’s broader development agenda.

Urgent PRESS STATEMENT

*SOUTHERN PROVINCE CRIES as MUNALI NICKEL MINE IS SHUTING DOWN  BUT UPND GOVT & MINE INVESTORS BETRAYS AND ABANDONS MINE WORKERS: EFF DENOUNCES THE BETRAYAL*- Kasonde Mwenda C-EFF President

31st August 2025

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) condemns in the strongest possible terms the abandonment and betrayal of our miners by the Hakainde Hichilema-led UPND government and the foreign mining investors who profit from our resources.

A Ministry of Labour letter dated 25 August 2025 addressed to Mabiza Resources Limited — produced and signed by the Office of the Labour Commissioner, Southern Province — makes the truth impossible to ignore. The Labour Office records that workers at Mabiza have gone unpaid for months (June, July and August 2025) and that the company has admitted it “lacks the capacity to meet its obligations.” Additionally, the workers have been shocked to find out that they have no access to their pension contribution which were not being remitted by the company while the government did nothing to force compliance. Workers are now left homeless as they are being evicted from their houses.

Instead of immediately protecting those workers — enforcing the law, and ensuring payment —the Labour Office reports that it has “exercised discretion to issue only a caution at this stage.”

Make no mistake: that caution is a scandal. It is a green light for impunity. While miners go without wages and are pushed to the brink, the government issues a slap on the wrist to corporate actors who are bleeding our communities dry. This is not oversight — it is abandonment; it is choosing investors over people.

*The EFF demands immediate and unconditional action:*

1. Immediate payment of all outstanding wages owing to Mabiza employees, as directed by the Labour Office — and full, independent public accounting of payments made.

2. An urgent, independent inquiry into Mabiza Resources Limited — its finances, contracts, and capacity assertions — with publicly released findings.

3. Immediate suspension of any export or asset movements by Mabiza until workers are paid and an independent forensic audit is completed.

4. Full accountability from the Hichilema administration: the Minister of Labour, the local Labour Commissioners and the Ministry must explain why punitive measures were not imposed despite contraventions that, by the Ministry’s own admission, “warrant punitive measures.”

5. A moratorium on any new investor advantages until all mining companies operating in Zambia are shown to be in full compliance with labour, tax and social obligations.

The EFF will not stand by while Zambians are treated as expendable. We will mobilise peaceful mass action to make sure miners’ demands are heard and addressed. We will also pursue every lawful means — including litigation and parliamentary action — to force accountability.

To the miners: we see you. To the Hichilema government and to the investors: history will record who stood with the people and who stood with the dollar.
EFF will prioritize Zambian citizens interests and mineral resources ownership will be our birthright for ZAMBIANS to enjoy.

Wherever we want to go our feet will take us there.

Zimbabwe to Skip 2028 Polls as Garwe Declares Mnangagwa’s Term Extended

Local Government Minister and ZANU-PF Mashonaland East Provincial Chairperson, Daniel Garwe, has announced that Zimbabwe will not hold national elections until 2030. He made the declaration during a ZANU-PF Provincial Coordinating Committee meeting in Marondera on Sunday, 31 August 2025.

According to The Herald, the meeting also saw the province unanimously back a proposal for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in office beyond 2028, aligning with the party’s Vision 2030 plan.

Pension Chiutsi, Mashonaland East Secretary for Legal Affairs, told the meeting that all districts in the province had submitted resolutions supporting the move. He said:

“All the districts in Mashonaland East Province gave us their resolutions. We compiled all of them. Mashonaland East 2025 annual resolution, number 1 says the President and First Secretary of Zanu PF, His Excellency Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, shall remain in office at the helm of the party and Government to fulfil Vision 2030.”

The province also passed resolutions urging the review and implementation of past party resolutions, the fulfilment of election promises, and the decentralisation of the Chitepo School of Ideology.

Garwe emphasised that elections would not be held in 2028, insisting that the country will continue under President Mnangagwa’s leadership until 2030. He stated:

“And ikozvino hatina ma elections atirikuona pakati pedu. Ini ndini chipo chekurota handisi kuroteswa ma elections. Hapana ma elections kusvika tasvika mugore ra2030. Hakuna ma elections tirikuenda mugore ra2030 navaMnangagwa.”

His comments were met with applause during the provincial coordinating committee meeting.

PEOPLE CAN’T EAT PRESS BRIEFINGS

PEOPLE CAN’T EAT PRESS BRIEFINGS

UPND has failed to heal poverty in the country but is concentrating on holding boring press briefings.

By Mast Reporter

THE United Party for National Development (UPND) government must focus its energy on reducing poverty because Zambians cannot eat endless press briefings, Dr Lawrence Mwelwa has said.

Dr Lawrence Mwelwa challenged President Hakainde Hichilema and the United Party for National Development UPND) to discard their belief that Zambians were fascinated with press briefings.

“People are suffering in silence while the doctor gives a press briefing [instead of healing their hunger]. Ministers and officials fly first class, speak polished>>read more>> https://mastmediazm.com/2025/09/people-cant-eat-press-briefings-dr-mwewa/

UPND’s Right to Inform, Why Press Briefings Matter in a Democracy

UPND’s Right to Inform, Why Press Briefings Matter in a Democracy

By Tobbius C Hamunkoyo-LLB

With due respect, Dr. Mwelwa, nothing prevents the UPND administration from informing the nation about developments across all sectors. In fact, this is a constitutional obligation anchored in transparency and accountability

The people of Zambia deserve to know what government is doing in education, health, agriculture, debt restructuring, and infrastructure. Press briefings are not an act of arrogance, as you suggest, but an act of democratic responsibility. To claim otherwise is to mislead the public on the role of government communication in a democracy , the Constitution of Zambia is very clear on Article 8 concerning national values and principles.

Your assertion that government “claps for itself” disregards the fact that public communication is a means of keeping citizens informed and engaged. If you wish to measure progress or failure, then present a proper scorecard backed by facts and figures. For instance, under the UPND administration, free education from grade one to secondary school has been implemented, the Constituency Development Fund has been increased from K1.6 million to K36 million per constituency , and Zambia successfully concluded debt restructuring agreements with official creditors, unlocking fiscal space for development . These are measurable policy achievements, not imaginary claims.

It is important to remember that the PF administration rarely saw the importance of press briefings, often opting for propaganda and cadre intimidation instead of open engagement.

That failure of transparency is what partly led to Zambia’s economic collapse and mistrust between citizens and leaders. The fact that PF silenced voices does not mean that the UPND media team should keep quiet. On the contrary, the current government has restored freedoms where opposition leaders, including Sean Tembo, Harry Kalaba, and Fred M’membe, can hold press briefings and rallies without harassment from cadres. That is a clear democratic gain that must be acknowledged.

Doctor, challenges such as high food prices, fuel costs, and stagnant salaries are real, but they are not unique to Zambia. These difficulties are the result of global shocks, including climate change, the Russia, Ukraine war, and disruptions in global energy markets. What matters is how the UPND is responding, stabilising the kwacha, securing fertiliser for farmers on time, restructuring debt, and keeping schools and hospitals running. Unlike before, when development was centralised in Lusaka, CDF has empowered local councils to drive grassroots development, giving citizens direct access to resources.

Therefore, Dr. Mwelwa, democracy demands that government communicates openly with its people. When UPND holds press briefings, it is not clapping for itself, it is fulfilling the duty of accountability, correcting misinformation, and ensuring that citizens know where the country stands. Criticism is welcome, but it must be anchored in fact, not rhetoric. The people of Zambia are entitled to truth, and the UPND administration is right to speak openly about the progress it is making.

WOMAN CATCHES HUSBAND DÉFILING 11 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER ON MATRIMONIAL BED

A WOMAN of Lundazi District in Eastern Province has been left traumatised after catching red-handed, her husband defiling her 11-year-old daughter.

Wedson Khonje, 46, tricked his wife, Meya, 31 by sending her to the market to buy beef, around 19:00 hours, on Sunday, August 31.

Soon after the child’s mother stepped out to the market, her husband lured the victim, his stepdaughter into his bedroom promising her money.

Soon after he lured her into his bedroom, Wedson Khonje undressed the minor, and began forcing his adult self into the child’s private part.

Thinking his wife would take long, Khonje took his precious time inflicting pain on the minor.

Having purchased the relish her husband craved to consume that evening, the mother’s victim hastily retired to home.

On arrival, Meya went straight to her matrimonial bedroom report to her husband that she had managed to buy his delicacy.

To her surprise, Wedson was butt naked, with her 11-year-old daughter, who equally was stripped and was in between sheets.

This numbed her. And so, without wasting time, Meya rushed to Lundazi Police Station and reported the incident.

Acting on this report, Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said that his officers rushed Chinyumba Compound to pick up the suspect who they put behind bars, awaiting formal arrest.

HON. CHARLES ABEL MULENGA INSPECTS NKANA EAST POLICE POST AND MAMA ESTHER CLINIC

By Dennis Sikazwe Jr

Yesterday, Kwacha Constituency Member of Parliament, Hon. Charles Abel Mulenga, visited Nkana East Police Post and Mama Esther Clinic in Kitwe.

At the police post, Hon. Mulenga held discussions with the Officer in Charge, where a number of concerns were raised. He assured the police service of his commitment to addressing these issues, highlighting that the increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF) the transformative initiative introduced by President Hakainde Hichilema will be used to uplift the facility and improve service delivery for the community.

Hon. Mulenga noted that CDF has already brought visible change to Kwacha Constituency through projects such as borehole drilling, the construction of clinics, desks for schools, feeder roads, market shelters, and other community developments.

From the police post, the lawmaker proceeded to Mama Esther Clinic. While there, he pledged that a new health facility will be built on the remaining piece of land next to the current clinic, using the 2025 CDF allocation. He also issued a stern warning to individuals attempting to encroach on the clinic land, urging them to stop immediately.

The additional clinic will further expand access to healthcare services for the people of Kwacha Constituency, in line with the government’s agenda of delivering tangible development at community level.

LUSAKA CITY COUNCIL RECORDS A DECREASE IN MARRIAGES IN THE SECOND QUARTER OF 2025 COMPARED TO LAST YEAR.

Lusaka City Council (LCC) says that a total of one thousand, one hundred and six (1,106) marriages have been registered and legalized by the Lusaka City Council (LCC) in the second quarter of 2025.

The Local Authority says the figure represents a slight decrease of 59 marriages or 5.1% compared to the same period in 2024 when 1,165 marriages were legally conducted.

In a statement issued to RCV News today, LCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba has encouraged more couples to legalize their marriages, as the Council continues with its intensified mass sensitization efforts and public campaigns, highlighting the importance of legalized unions.

“LCC is working diligently to bridge the information gap by educating the public on how to marry legally through the Local Authority and in accordance with the Marriages Act, which has yielded positive results with more couples choosing to formalize their unions through legal channels”, said Ms. Mwamba.

Ms. Mwamba has encouraged all couples to follow the legal process and register their marriages to avoid future complications.

She further said legalized marriages offer formal recognition and protection under the law, safeguarding their rights and ensuring long-term security.

GOVERNMENT IMPLORED TO INVESTIGATE FUEL SUPPLIERS IN KITWE

GOVERNMENT IMPLORED TO INVESTIGATE FUEL SUPPLIERS IN KITWE.

Kitwe Drivers Association Chairperson Kedrick Yabalwashi, has implored the government to conduct a thorough investigation on fuel suppliers, across the district.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Yabalwashi, stressed that the issue of inconsistency in fuel supply is an indication of something sinister going on amongst filing station operators.

He said it is surprising that in small towns fuel is sufficient while busy and big towns like Kitwe, there is always a shortage.

Mr. Yabalwashi, further disclosed that it has become a normal trend where filling stations will run out of the commodity when there is a reduction and only have more than enough when there is an increase during the monthly price review.

He has since implored the government to address the wrong vice, stating that if left unchecked, there will be a huge cost on the economy.

Boy Mamabolo quits ANC after 29 years amid controversy

Boy Mamabolo quits ANC after 29 years amid controversy

Suspended ANC member and former Member of Parliament Boy Mamabolo has officially resigned from the ANC after 29 years of membership.

Mamabolo’s decision comes amid ongoing controversies, including his suspension earlier this year over social media posts deemed defamatory toward fellow ANC member Onnica Moloi.

He has also faced legal challenges, including a court order requiring the deactivation of his Facebook account, and his attempt to launch a new political party, “Mandela For President,” was rejected by the Independent Electoral Commission.

In a statement, Mamabolo described leaving the ANC as a “very difficult and emotional” decision, citing internal sabotage and efforts to discredit him as reasons for his departure.

His resignation marks a significant shift in Limpopo politics, raising questions about the future direction of his political career.

Numsa urges Ford to pause retrenchments amid South African auto sector woes

Numsa urges Ford to pause retrenchments amid South African auto sector woes

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has urged Ford Motor Company to immediately halt its planned retrenchments of 474 workers and initiate meaningful consultations to explore alternative solutions.

The call comes in response to Ford’s recent announcement of job cuts at its key manufacturing facilities, highlighting growing concerns over deindustrialization in the country’s automotive industry.

Last week, on August 28, Ford issued a Section 189 notice under the Labour Relations Act, signaling intentions to eliminate 391 operator positions at its Silverton assembly plant in Pretoria, 73 roles at the Struandale engine plant in Gqeberha, and an additional 10 positions as part of a broader “manufacturing realignment” to optimize operations.

The move is seen as a reflection of broader challenges facing South Africa’s automotive sector, including economic pressures and uncertainty that have led to similar workforce reductions across the industry.

NUMSA General Secretary Irvin Jim condemned the decision, accusing the company of prioritizing profits over workers’ livelihoods. “NUMSA has witnessed a painful pattern that as soon as employers’ profits are under threat, the first thing they do is to target what they regard as the weakest link in the chain, which is workers,” Jim stated.

He described the retrenchments as an “attack on the South African working class” and emphasized the need for government intervention to support manufacturing and prevent further job losses.

The union has called for urgent consultations within the 60-day statutory period, advocating for alternatives such as worker retraining or production adjustments to avert the layoffs.

NUMSA urged affected workers to unite and engage with shop stewards for updates, vowing to intensify its campaign against the cuts.

Ford has not yet responded publicly to NUMSA’s demands, but the situation underscores the fragile state of employment in South Africa’s industrial heartlands, where thousands of families depend on the automotive supply chain.

CEC posts $61.5m profit

CEC posts $61.5m profit

The Copperbelt Energy Corporation Plc has posted an increased Profit After Tax (PAT) of US$61.5 million for its half-year period ended June 30, 2025, up from US$43.2 million in the prior period, driven by strong performance across all its business segments.

CEC Chief Executive Officer Owen Silavwe announced that the 25MW Garnerton South project is expected to reach financial close in the third quarter of this year.

According to CEC’s unaudited financial results for the period ending June 30, 2025, the company posted an increased Profit After Tax of approximately US$61.5 million, up from US$43.2 million earned in the corresponding period last year.

The improved financial performance was primarily driven by strong performance across all its business segments, including local and regional power sales and wheeling.

This represents the third consecutive half-year where the power utility has recorded sustained growth in PAT, after posting profits of approximately US$30 million, US$113 million, and US$43.2 million in the half-year periods of 2022, 2023, and 2024, respectively.

Revenue increased to US$360 million in 2025, up from US$227.8 million in 2024, signalling a 58% growth.

Mr. Silavwe disclosed that the 25MW Garnerton South project is expected to reach financial close in the third quarter.

“During the period, we doubled down on our efforts to contribute to the energy transition with two additional solar power plants, namely the 136MW Itimpi 2 and the 12.5MW Fitula projects, currently under construction, while the 25MW Garnerton South project is expected to reach financial close in the third quarter. We also commissioned works related to the expansion of the existing interconnector between Zambia and the DRC, enabling an almost twofold increase in transmission capacity,” said Mr. Silavwe.

“We are progressing with the construction of several power connection assets to support specified mining projects at various development stages, whose commercial operations are expected to commence within the next 12 months.”

CEC’s share price on the Lusaka Securities Exchange (LuSE) is currently at an all-time high of ZMW25.95 per share as of the end of August 2025, compared to ZMW13.22 per share one year prior.

In June this year, CEC’s market capitalization on the LuSE exceeded US$1 billion, a historic first for locally  listed Companies on the  bourse, reflecting strong confidence in the company’s business operations and strategy.

The Kitwe-based power utility did not declare a dividend payable to shareholders during the period under review, in line with the company’s policy to only consider dividend decisions in the second half of the year.

Ba Saga now ZNBC TV programmes director, “I left music to look after my kids”

Ba Saga now ZNBC TV programmes director, “I left music to look after my kids”

IF you ever sang along to Chanibaba, then you have Ba Saga to thank.
Born Che Mutale, the 55 year old Zambian music pioneer was once at the forefront of Zambian music, keeping the nation glued to black and white TVs and radio sets alike.

Today, Ba Saga’s world has shifted as he is no longer chasing melodies but shaping stories behind the lens as a TV programmes director at ZNBC Kitwe Studios.

For many pioneers of Zambian music, their whereabouts after leaving the limelight remain a mystery, until sometimes, tragically, their death brings them back into public memory.

Ba Saga, however, is very much alive in media, having quietly built a 16 year career at ZNBC, shaping content and directing narratives far from the glare of the stage.

He is one of Zambia’s pioneering musicians who has walked away from the limelight to focus on family and a career in media.

From as early as grade eight, Ba Saga knew he loved music. He wanted to create hits, perform for the nation and inspire others through his art.

His morale was boosted by his parents, although his father initially opposed his musical ambitions, hoping he would study law instead.

Ba Saga who obviously knew his strengths and never wanted to be part of the many GCE lawyers that roam the steeets of Lusaka and end up as Facebook attorneys who mumble during repatriation court hearings, said no to law.

By the age of 16, the artiste had already completed his senior secondary education at Kabulonga Boys Secondary School and was ready to chase his childhood dream of becoming a musician.

Raised on a farm in Chilanga, surrounded by maize fields and gaga as the firstborn of seven sisters and two brothers, Ba Saga’s musical journey took off in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when Zambian music was still finding its feet.

Alongside pioneers like James Chamanyazi, JK, MC Wabwino and Nasty D, he performed for little or no pay, helping lay the foundation for future generations of Zambian artistes.

The now TV programmes director won accolades and recognition as a singer.

He recalled wining an award for Kumunzi Kubotu as the Best Song of the year in 2000 at the Ngoma Awards, beating Amayenge and the late Brian Chilala.

In 2001, Chanibaba went on to become a timeless hit, performed alongside international stars like Fally Ipupa and Oliver Mtukudzi.

Despite the success, the pressures of fame came at a cost.

“I left music to look after my kids,” Ba Saga told Kalemba in an interview.

“My firstborn son, Lukwesa, was just a baby and I missed important parts of his life. I would wake up, perform, come back and realise I had missed precious moments. That’s when I knew I had to step away from the fame.”

“I said you know what, I miss my life, I miss my family,  I would wake up one morning, I’m out, I come back, nakwata ameno umwana, you go out, you perform, you come back, ale enda umwana, you go out, you find he’s talking, I said you know what, I’m missing out on important parts of my son’s life and I walked away from the fame, the music and everything.”

The transition to media was not easy so he says, but it allowed him to find peace and purpose.

It took him a few more years, shorter than the time it would take a girl from Mufulira to bake a cake, to realise he needed to be out of the spotlight.

He returned to school, trained in editing, camera work and documentary making and joined ZNBC in 2009.

For 16 years now, he has become a versatile media professional, directing programmes, producing content and crafting documentaries.

“Media is teamwork, you can’t do it alone. Music was different. I could sit in my room, write a song, record but media has taught me collaboration. I love the camera, it’s a powerful tool to tell someone’s story,” he explained.

Now, as he approaches retirement from ZNBC, the 55 year old reflects on a life that spans music and media, fame and family, spotlight and solitude.

“I don’t regret leaving music. I found another love in media. I’m happy telling stories through the camera lens, watching life unfold and living quietly,” he said.

Israel was the strongest lobby I’ve ever seen. They had total control over Congress, and now they don’t- Trump

REESE: A different war, Israel, a March Pew Poll, found that 53% of surveyed U.S. adults had an unfavorable view of Israel, that’s down – or that is up from 42% in 2022. Among young Republicans under 50, 50% have an unfavorable view of Israel. That’s up from 35% in 2022. There’s a growing group within the MAGA, America First coalition, Republicans, especially younger Republicans, who are skeptical of our support for Israel. Are you aware of this group? Are you worried about it?

TRUMP: Yeah I’m aware of it. So, Israel is amazing, because, you know, I have good support from Israel. I have. Look, nobody has done more for Israel than I have, including the recent attacks with Iran, wiping that thing out. We, that plane, wiped them out like nobody ever saw before. You know, we got back and CNN was trying to say ‘well, maybe it wasn’t complete,’ and it turned out totally complete, beyond complete. But when, if you go back 20 years, I mean, I will tell you, Israel had the strongest lobby in Congress of anything or body, or of any company or corporation or state that I’ve ever seen. Israel was the strongest. Today, it doesn’t have a very strong a lobby. It’s amazing.

There was a time where you couldn’t speak bad, if you wanted to be a politician, you couldn’t speak badly. But today, you have, you know, AOC plus three, and you have all these lunatics, and they’ve really, they’ve changed it. You’re too young to know this, but if you go back 15 years, probably that’s when it started, right, Israel, you would understand this very much. Israel was the strongest lobby that I’ve ever seen. They had total control over Congress, and now they don’t, you know, I’m a little surprised to see that. And people, they forgot about October 7th. You know, October 7th was a truly horrible day, because I’ve seen the pictures.

REESE: I was just over in Israel, and we went right up to the war where you could hear the bombs dropping in Gaza. And we went to the places from October 7th. Scary. Being in it. I understand

TRUMP: It was a really bad one, right?

REESE: Yeah.

TRUMP: And you know, you have people that deny it ever happened, they’re deniers. You have people that deny the Holocaust ever happened. So, they’re gonna have to get that war over with. But it is hurting Israel. There’s no question about it. They may be winning the war, but they’re not winning the world of public relations, you know, and it is hurting them. But Israel was the strongest lobby 15 years ago that there has ever been, and now it’s, it’s been hurt, especially in Congress.

South African activists, led by Mandla Mandela, join global flotilla to break Gaza blockade

South African activists, led by Mandla Mandela, join global flotilla to break Gaza blockade

Mandla Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela, is leading a South African delegation in the Global Sumud Flotilla, the largest civilian maritime mission yet to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

The flotilla, launched from Barcelona with more than 50 vessels from 44 nations, is carrying food, medical supplies, and baby formula to ease Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

Mandela joined international figures including Greta Thunberg and Susan Sarandon, calling the mission a stand against what activists describe as genocide. Despite storm delays, organizers plan to regroup in Tunis before heading for Gaza, undeterred by past Israeli interceptions.

South Africa’s involvement reflects its historic solidarity with Palestine and its ongoing genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. The flotilla, named Sumud (perseverance), aims to spotlight Gaza’s plight and pressure Israel to lift the blockade.

VIDEO: Astronaut explained why he wore gorilla suit on ISS as hilarious footage of prank resurfaces

0

Picture the scene, you’re on board the International Space Station (ISS) when suddenly a gorilla comes speeding towards you unburdened by gravity.

That’s what happened to British astronaut Tim Peake about a decade ago, after his American colleague, Scott Kelly, was sent a gorilla costume by his twin brother Mark.

The Kelly twins are both astronauts, although Scott has been in space longer, thanks to an experiment where one of the twins would leave Earth for an extended period of time, while the other would remain on Earth.

That experiment gave NASA a lot of interesting information to work with, but the brothers decided to conduct an experiment of their own by sending a gorilla costume up to the ISS.

Scott once spoke to People and explained exactly how the hilarious prank came to be, saying it was his brother’s idea to cheer him up after a long time in space.

“I was on the phone with my brother one day and he said, ‘Hey, I’m sending you a gorilla suit,'” Scott recounted. “And I said, ‘Why?’ And he goes, ‘Because there’s never been a gorilla in space before.'”

However, that suit was on board one of Elon Musk’s unmanned SpaceX rockets, which blew up, but the astronaut twins weren’t deterred from their plan to send a gorilla suit where no gorilla suit had gone before.

Scott said: “The next time I was on the phone with my brother, he goes, ‘I’m sending you another gorilla suit’.”

Once it arrived, he waited until he had a moment to himself on board the ISS and got changed into his costume, then proceeded to chase Peake along the corridors of one of humanity’s greatest scientific achievements.

Footage of the prank routinely does the rounds on the internet, much to the joy of viewers who love seeing an astronaut get into a gorilla costume and scoot about the International Space Station after other astronauts.

Our species has now reached the point where we can engage in gorilla suit-based tomfoolery in space, which must surely be a major milestone in the scientific progress of humanity.

We managed to put a man on the Moon, but perhaps the greater achievement is being able to send an astronaut a gorilla costume for them to have fun with on board the ISS.

Kelly said that Peake knew about the gorilla suit, so they staged their funny chase for the camera, but some of their other colleagues didn’t spot what was going on.

On one occasion, he donned the suit and hid in another astronaut’s sleeping quarters, and afterwards, was a little worried that I could have given him a heart attack’.

He also ‘floated down’ to visit the Russian astronauts in their part of the ISS, adding: “When they saw it, they were just laughing like you wouldn’t believe.”

He also did an educational video for children while wearing the suit, because who wouldn’t want to learn something from a talking gorilla in space?
