The Notion of Uncertain Opposition Strength in Zambia: A Misleading Narrative

The Notion of Uncertain Opposition Strength in Zambia: A Misleading Narrative

By Bartholomew Bosha Phiri, SP Lusaka Province Youth Secretary

The notion that the opposition’s strength in Zambia is uncertain is a misleading narrative that overlooks the complexities of the country’s political landscape.

This narrative is often perpetuated by those who seek to maintain the status quo and undermine the opposition’s legitimacy.

In reality, the opposition in Zambia has made significant strides in recent years, despite facing numerous challenges and obstacles.

A notable example is Dr. Fred M’membe and the Socialist Party, which have successfully mobilized citizens, exposed government corruption, and proposed alternative policies that resonate with the electorate.

The idea that no opposition party can unseat President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND is a primitive way of analysis.

As a political scientist and analyst myself, it is clear that the Socialist Party is the only hope for the Zambian people, with a clear message of justice, equity, and peace. We are certain that in 2026, the UPND will face a strong challenge.

Moreover, the opposition’s diversity is often misconstrued as a weakness. However, this diversity brings together different perspectives, experiences, and expertise, making the opposition a more robust and representative force.

The restrictions on political participation imposed by the ruling party are overly restrictive, as they recognize the Socialist Party’s determination to bring about change. The party is not merely participating in politics; it is ready to send President Hichilema back to his farm in 2026.

Rather than focusing on the opposition’s perceived weaknesses, we should acknowledge the significant progress they have made and the legitimate concerns they have raised about the ruling party’s governance.

The opposition’s strength in Zambia is not uncertain, but rather, it is a dynamic and evolving force that is capable of challenging the ruling party and bringing about meaningful change in this country.

SUPREME COURT GIVES WOMAN “FREE” HOUSES

SUPREME COURT GIVES WOMAN “FREE” HOUSES
By Dickson Jere

A woman owned a huge farm in Ndeke – Lime Area – in Ndola. She had Certificate of Title to the land, which was legally given to her by Ministry of Lands.

Unknown to her, Ndola City Council (NCC) decided to offer people plots on the same farm between 2004 to 2006. Those that accepted the offers, paid and also had their building plans approved by the Council before they started constructing houses.

When the woman visited her farm, she was perplexed to find houses and some people had even moved in (fifty four houses). She demanded that they vacate her land but they refused saying they were given the land by the Council. The matter ended up at the Ndola High Court.

After a protracted trial, the Judge ruled that the houses could not be demolished or the owners removed because of the developments and some of the houses were even completed. The Judge ordered that Council should instead compensate the woman for having taken her land.

Unhappy with the Judgment, she appealed to the Supreme Court, arguing that she could not be forced to sell her land nor removed to pave way for the “squatters” whom she did not allow on her land.

Three Supreme Court Judges heard the case and held that the woman owned the land and that she cannot be forced to sell to pave way for “squatters”.

“The appellant, as the title holder to the property in question, is entitled to quiet possession and enjoyment of the whole property,” the Judges said, ordering the developers to vacate the land forthwith.

“The development on the land having become part of the land shall, in keeping with the law as we have explained it, now vests in the appellant landowner,” the judges said.

Simply, the Supreme Court ordered that the houses now belong to the woman who will decide what to do with them as they were built by squatters on their own risk.

The Court further ordered that those who built the houses should compensate the woman for trespassing on her farm and for loss of use of land to be assessed later.

“What is clear is that the appellant was not selling her property. She is entitled to quiet enjoyment of the whole of her farm,” the Judges noted, adding that the High Court Judge made a grave mistake to protect the trespassers.

“We entertain no doubt whatsoever that the lower court’s reasoning in coming to its decision was demonstrably wrong. It finds no support in law and just a little in reason,” they said, adding that the Judge used morality and not law.

The Judges also took a swipe at the Ndola City Council whom they accused of being corrupt.

“The Present dispute is also in many respects paradigmatic of the rot in the administration of many local government authorities in the country; breakdown of orderly systems, epitomized by a highly casual and suspiciously corrupt manner that animates land allocation by these authorities in many instances,” the Judges said.

Case citation – Prisca Lubungu v Obed Kabango and Others and Ndola City Council (Appeal No. 216/2016).

What a brilliant judgement. The Court used the Roman Law doctrine “quicquid plantatur, solo solo cedit” which simply means that whatever is fixed to the land becomes part of the land and therefore the owner of the land owns everything on it!

SOUTH KOREA’S YOON BECOMES FIRST SITTING PRESIDENT TO BE ARRESTED

S KOREA’S YOON BECOMES FIRST SITTING PRESIDENT TO BE ARRESTED

SOUTH Korea’s Yoon Suk Yeol has become the country’s first sitting president to be arrested, ending a weeks-long standoff between investigators and his personal security.

Yoon, whose failed attempt to impose martial law plunged the country into turmoil and saw him impeached by parliament, is being investigated on charges of insurrection.

He is, however, still technically the president as a constitutional court has to decide whether his impeachment is valid.

Investigators used ladders and wirecutters in the freezing cold to get to Yoon, whose Presidential Security Service (PSS) personnel had erected barricades in a bid to thwart his arrest.

The 64-year-old leader said he agreed to appear before the Corruption Investigation Office for high ranking officials (CIO) to avoid bloodshed.

In a three-minute video message, Yoon said he would comply with the investigation against him even though he was against it.

He has consistently maintained that the warrant for his arrest is not legally valid.

Yoon said he witnessed how authorities “invaded” his home’s security perimeter with fire equipment.

“I decided to appear before the CIO, even though it is an illegal investigation, in order to prevent any unsavoury bloodshed,” he said.

More than 1,000 officers were part of Wednesday’s dawn operation, which marked the second time officers had tried to arrest him.

The CIO which is investigating Yoon, previously attempted to arrest him on 3 January.

They had obtained the warrant after he ignored multiple summonses to appear for questioning.

Yoon’s People Power Party decried his arrest as “illegal”, with floor leader Kweon Seong-dong describing Wednesday’s events as “regretful”.

On the other hand, the floor leader of the opposition Democratic Party, Park Chan-dae, said Yoon’s arrest showed that “justice in South Korea is alive”.

This arrest “is the first step toward restoring constitutional order, democracy and the rule of law,” he said during a party meeting.

The country is currently being led by Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok as acting president. He was thrust into power after the first acting president, Han Duck-soo, was also impeached by opposition majority parliament.

The quality of leadership in Africa has declined – Jacob Zuma

0

Former President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, has expressed great concern regarding the decline in the quality of leadership across Africa, attributing it to interference and a lack of proactiveness.

He highlighted challenges that have diminished Africa’s once vibrant voice on the global stage.

“We [Africa] became a kind of democracy that people were talking about at the beginning, but something interfered with Africa, as we know. For example, there was a coup d’état, where Western countries were actually organising the coup d’état against us. We tried to come in thereafter once again. And I think Africa was becoming very strong once again. I think they shifted Africa to quite an extent,” he said.

According to citinewsroom.com, this statement was made during an interview on Channel One TV’s Point of View.

The former president shed light on the shift in political culture, where leaders today feel reluctant to responding decisively to critical issues.

“I think if you talk about today in Africa, there are issues that are there which you wonder why, as well as how we gradually began to make Africa no longer articulate about itself as it were. I mean even now, there are certain things that are happening in parts of the continent,” he remarked.

He expressed concern about the lack of robust actions from African leaders, contrasting the present-day inactivity with the more vocal and united approach of past leaders.

“But the continent is more quiet than it would have been during that time. Leaders would be moved immediately. These days, leaders are very reluctant and quiet. Even if things are going wrong, that tells you the standard is no longer the same,” he added.

Jacob Zuma further commended President John Dramani Mahama, describing him as the perfect leader required in Africa.

According to the former president, Mahama’s re-election is a positive achievement for Ghana and an inspiring model for Africa.

Sean “Diddy” Combs has been named a defendant in another lawsuit accusing him of s£xu@l ass@ult

Disgraced music mogul, Sean “Diddy” Combs has been named a defendant in another lawsuit accusing him of s£xu@l ass@ult.

In the complaint filed in New York, the plaintiff, only identified as Jane Doe, claims Combs r@ped her in 2000 when she was a 16-year-old high school student.

The accuser, who says she lived in Lower Manhattan with her parents at the time, alleges that she was working as a babysitter in an apartment building where Combs’ unnamed romantic partner also lived when she encountered the music mogul and two other men who apparently worked for him.

Combs asked the teen if she wanted a ride home repeatedly, the complaint alleges, before she eventually got in his car after refusing several times.

The plaintiff says she first became alarmed when she was not dropped off at home. She claims that she was then offered a drink to “calm her down,” which caused her to feel “groggy” and “unsteady.”

The plaintiff alleges she was taken to another location by the Bad Boy Records founder and his two employees, who are not named in the suit, before Combs raped her.

The plaintiff says she was then taken home and left in the lobby of her apartment building.

Combs has now been named as a defendant in more than 30 lawsuits accusing him of s£xual misconduct.

Combs’ attorneys denied the allegations in a statement to PEOPLE.

“No matter how many lawsuits are filed, it won’t change the fact that Mr. Combs has never s£xu@lly ass@ulted, or s£x trafficked anyone—man or woman, adult or minor,” his legal team said. “We live in a world where anyone can file a lawsuit for any reason. Fortunately, a fair and impartial judicial process exists to find the truth, and Mr. Combs is confident he will prevail in court.”

Combs is currently behind bars in Brooklyn as he awaits his trial on federal s£x crime charges, which is scheduled for May. He has pleaded not guilty.

Rising waters of Lake Tanganyika devastate residents of Uvira in DRC

The city of Uvira in South Kivu is facing a severe humanitarian crisis as the waters of Lake Tanganyika continue to rise. The flooding has caused widespread destruction, with over 3,000 homes submerged and more than 36,000 people displaced. Months after the initial flooding began, the situation continues to deteriorate, leaving thousands in desperate need of assistance.]

Residents Fear for Their Lives

The flooding has brought new dangers to the community, including increased encounters with hippos. These animals, displaced from their habitats, pose a serious threat to residents.

Furaha Nsimire, a resident of Uvira, explained: “Hippos hide in the water during the day and come out at night. With the rising waters, they can attack humans. Our lives are at risk because of these animals. We can no longer grow crops as they destroy everything.”

The destruction has forced families to abandon their homes and seek refuge in overcrowded shelters or with other families. Entire neighborhoods remain underwater, and there is little hope for an immediate return to normalcy.

Agriculture in Crisis

The rising waters have also devastated local agriculture, a vital source of livelihood for many. Farmers along the lake have seen their crops destroyed by hippos, adding to their struggles.

Kasongo Musimbwa, Environmental Development Supervisor in Bavira Territory, said: “Farmers in Kalungwe and Kamba Makobola are losing their crops to hippos, which are protected animals in DR Congo. They grow cassava and sweet potatoes, but the hippos destroy their fields.”

Unprecedented Changes in the Lake

The rising water levels are unprecedented, reversing decades of retreat by Lake Tanganyika.

Kiza Muhato, Mayor of Uvira, described the phenomenon: “Since 1964, Lake Tanganyika receded by about 150 meters. But between 2023 and 2024, the lake has reclaimed its shores. Areas that were once land, including homes, are now completely submerged.”

The city center and many other neighborhoods are still under water. Reconstruction efforts are daunting, as the displaced population struggles with harsh living conditions and the loss of their property.

A Call for Urgent Action

Uvira’s ongoing crisis highlights the urgent need for humanitarian support. The displacement, property destruction, and worsening living conditions demand immediate attention to help affected families and rebuild the community. Without intervention, the challenges posed by Lake Tanganyika’s rising waters will continue to grow.

How Arsène Wenger revolutionized Premier League diets

When Arsène Wenger arrived at Arsenal in 1996, he brought more than just tactical acumen and innovative coaching methods. At 1xBet you have a chance to emjoy your sport betting on all Arsenal matches too.

He brought a revolutionary approach to nutrition that transformed the Premier League. Wenger, a studious and forward-thinking manager, recognized that diet and recovery were as integral to performance as training and tactics. This was a notion that was virtually unheard of in English football at the time. The 1xBet website allows you to emjoyall your sports betting on English football competitions too.

Hatred for vegetables and love for frying food
English football culture in the 1990s was notoriously unrefined when it came to player nutrition. Post-match beers, pre-game fry-ups, and an aversion to vegetables were not uncommon. It is possible to start your 1xBet registration in an easy manner, and here you will be able to wager on the Premier League as well.

Players would often celebrate victories, or console themselves after defeats, at pubs or fast-food joints. Wenger, having honed his managerial philosophy in France and Japan, found these habits baffling and counterproductive. By starting your registration at 1xBet, you will also be able to wager on Japanese and French football matches too.

He immediately introduced a disciplined, science-backed dietary regimen that emphasized the importance of nutrition in maximizing performance and prolonging careers.

Building an incredible squad

Under Wenger’s guidance, processed foods and sugary drinks were replaced with lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, and fresh vegetables. Hydration became a key focus, with players encouraged to drink water regularly to aid recovery.

3 new ingredients that were added to the diets were:

  • pasta;
  • rice;
  • and steamed fish.

Wenger also educated his players on how diet impacts 3 things: energy levels, muscle recovery, and injury prevention.

Initially, many Arsenal players were skeptical. Icons like Tony Adams and Paul Merson resisted the changes. Yet Wenger’s methods began to pay off almost immediately. Arsenal became faster, fitter, and more resilient, with fewer injuries and stronger performances in the later stages of matches. By visiting the football betting sites 1xBet, you will also have a chance to wager on other great football squads too.

His Arsenal side of the late 1990s and early 2000s, culminating in the legendary “Invincibles” season of 2003-04, embodied this blend of athleticism and discipline.

53-Year-Old French Woman Loses £697,000 To Brad Pitt Impersonator In Romance Scam

A 53-year-old French woman has fallen victim to a romance scam which has cost her £697,000

This comes after she was tricked into sending a scammer who posed as Brad Pitt the hefty amount under the guise of paying for his cancer treatment.

Ladbible.com explained that it all began in February 2023 after the victim, Anne, received a message from someone on Facebook claiming to be Brad Pitt’s mother.

The following day, Anne received another message from an account, this time posing as Brad Pitt himself under the guise of wanting to know the Interior Designer on a personal level.

In an interview with French channel TF1 (via BFM TV), Anne said she entertained the idea that she may have been in contact with the actual Hollywood star because her chat with the scammer seemed believable.

She confessed that at certain times, the thought of dealing with an impersonator dawned on her, but her desire to get someone to confide in kept her going.

“In fact, we’re talking about Brad Pitt, I’m falling from the clouds. At first, I tell myself it’s fake, but I don’t really understand what’s happening to me. After that, we will contact each other every day, and we become friends,” she said via translated text.
“There are so few men who write you this kind of thing. I liked the man I was talking to. He knew how to talk to women, it was always very well done.

Lies by fake Brad Pitt
The supposed amorous affair between the fake Brad Pitt and Anne got intense as the scammer proposed to Anne and claimed he needed money for urgent medical treatment.

The fake celebrity convinced Anne that funding his cancer treatment had proven challenging due to his ongoing divorce from Angelina Jolie, which reached a settlement in December 2024.

Anne, who was head over heels for her Hollywood ‘lover,’ also believed it as numerous AI-generated pictures of the actor in the hospital holding up cards with personalised messages were sent to her.

After months of constant contact, Anne agreed to marry the person behind the account after she divorced her husband and received €775,000 (£652,310).

The 53-year-old sent the alimony from her divorce to the fake account, hoping to receive luxury gifts in return, such as bags from Chanel and Hermès, as promised.

Anne became suspicious that she may have been duped after she saw the actual Brad Pit with his girlfriend, Ines de Ramon.

She then filed a complaint in 2024, prompting an investigation into the scam.

Initial warning from Brad Pitt’s team
A representative of the actor discussed fraudulent incidents involving people under investigation for allegedly defrauding two women out of $350,000 (£290,000) online.

“It’s awful that scammers take advantage of fans’ strong connection with celebrities, and this is an important reminder to not respond to unsolicited online outreach, especially from actors who have no social media presence,” they said via PEOPLE last year.

Vinicius Junior: Brazilian Forward Reportedly Weighing Real Madrid Exit

Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior is reportedly contemplating a departure from Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Vinicius is one of the best players in the world, evidenced by winning last year’s FIFA Player of the Year award and finishing second behind Manchester City’s Rodri in the 2024 Ballon d’Or.

The 24-year-old joined Real Madrid in 2018 for a $53 million transfer fee from Brazilian club Flamengo, per Forbes.

Since then, he has emerged as one of the club’s brightest stars, playing a key role in securing three La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies for Los Blancos.

Why Vinicius wants to leave Real Madrid
With over two-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract, Vinicius Jr. is reportedly considering leaving the Spanish capital, as reported by Fichajes.

The source states that Vinicius is deeply disappointed with the 5-2 loss against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.

The Galacticos took an early lead in the El Clasico clash in Saudi Arabia, courtesy of Kylian Mbappe.

However, the Catalan giants quickly turned the game on its head, storming to a 4-1 lead by halftime with goals from Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Alejandro Balde.

The nightmare continued for Real in the second half as Raphinha added his second before Rodrygo scored a consolation goal to make it 5-2.

It is noted that the player plans to explore options regarding his future at the end of the season.

His potential departure would mark a significant loss for the Spanish giants, as they rely heavily on his attacking prowess and creative contributions.

Vinicius Junior has scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists in 24 matches for Real Madrid this season.

Vinicius fights back tears during El Clasico’s final minutes

Vinicius could only watch in anguish as his side suffered a crushing 5-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday night.

Substituted in the 76th minute, the Brazilian star sat on the bench, visibly emotional, as his team struggled to find answers against their arch-rivals.

For Vinicius, the sight of his team being overrun without him on the pitch was particularly painful.

Cameras captured the 24-year-old holding back tears as he realised his efforts had not been enough to prevent the heavy defeat.

Al Hilal chase Vinicius
According to Marca, the Saudi Pro League is eyeing the 24-year-old as a potential replacement for Al-Hilal’s Neymar.

While the winger is reportedly exploring options in Europe, the Saudis remain determined to tempt him away from the La Liga giants with their substantial financial resources.

African Development Bank Launches Pioneering Energy-Efficiency Project in Senegal

0

The African Development Bank has approved an €8.51 million loan for Senegal’s “Programme to Promote Efficient Lighting Lamps” (PPLEEF), a trailblazing initiative to advance energy efficiency in the country. This marks the Bank’s first fully dedicated demand-side energy efficiency investment project, setting a new benchmark for sustainable development across Africa.

The PPLEEF initiative is poised to transform energy usage in Senegal, benefiting nearly 700,000 households and 80,000 small businesses across Dakar, Thiès, and Diourbel regions. By replacing outdated incandescent bulbs with modern LED lighting, the project will deliver substantial energy savings, reduce electricity costs, and significantly cut carbon emissions. Central to the initiative is its innovative on-bill financing model, which enables consumers to repay the cost of the new lighting through monthly energy savings. This model ensures the program is both accessible and affordable for all participants.

Jalel Chabchoub, Chief Energy Efficiency Officer in the Renewable and Energy Efficiency Department at the African Development Bank, highlighted the broader significance of the initiative: “The PPLEEF is a milestone for Senegal’s national commitment to sustainable development and universal energy access. This program will reduce energy demand and consumption during peak hours, and the on-bill financing approach will be used subsequently to introduce more efficient appliances. As the first phase of Senegal’s general lighting program, PPLEEF will pave the way for a more sustainable energy future not only in Senegal but across Africa.”

Beyond its immediate benefits to Senegal, the PPLEEF is a replicable and scalable model for other African nations. By reducing energy consumption, the program delays the need for costly investments in new power plants, particularly during periods of peak demand.

“This project will have a positive impact on household and small business budgets by reducing their energy bills,” said Mame Coumba Ndiaye, General Director of Senegal’s Agence pour l’Économie et la Maîtrise de l’Énergie (AEME). “It will relieve the grid with annual electricity savings of more than 189 GWh. These savings will be redirected to reinforce electricity availability and improve access for the population,” she stated.

From 2019 to 2024, the Bank committed approximately $6 billion to energy projects across Africa.

the African Development Bank and the World Bank Group, alongside other partners, Africa is taking significant strides toward closing its energy access gap. These efforts underscore a growing commitment to sustainable development and energy equity across the continent.

Whoopi Goldberg says no one is to blame for LA fires

Whoopi Goldberg has asked the public to stop assigning blame for the deadly Los Angeles fires. Speaking on Monday’s episode of The View, the 69-year-old Oscar winner attributed the devastating fires to last week’s hurricane-force winds that swept through Southern California, as reported by the New York Post.

“There was a fire catastrophe in California. It had to do with winds,” she told the studio audience. “The winds move things and sparks move things.”

“It doesn’t matter how much water you have if 900,000 buildings go up at the same time.”

Goldberg continued, “Having lived in California, having lost every house save for one that we ever lived in, I take great offense at pointing fingers.”

“You should be pointing fingers about, how can we help?” she added. “It’s too soon to be saying, ‘Oh it’s [California Governor] Gavin [Newsom]’s fault.’ It’s nobody’s fault.”

“It’s like us taking seriously that there are magic lasers in the sky that direct the weather. That doesn’t work, that doesn’t happen.”

Seeking to underscore the “natural” in “natural disaster,” Goldberg said, “We don’t control Mother Nature. Mother Nature doesn’t give a damn what we want.”

“Mother Nature does what she does and if you’re in the way, this is what happens, and California is chock full of people.”

Goldberg made further insights on the Los Angeles fires during Monday’s episode of The View: Behind the Table, expanding on her call to stop assigning blame for the disaster.

“There’s a lot happening. And please don’t blame the people for this. This is Mother Nature, and nobody was prepared for it,” she implored while chatting with podcast co-host and “The View” executive producer Brian Teta.

“And you couldn’t have been prepared for it because what mind could ever think that 75 hundred-thousand buildings were going to burn at the same time?”

“My whole neighborhood is gone,” she confessed. “The Palisades is gone. It’s insane. It’s insane. So I’m hoping that people will stop listening to people who are blaming other people and just try to figure ways to help.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom are facing scrutiny over the local and state government’s response to the devastating LA fires. As of Monday, the death toll from the fires—including the Palisades and Eaton fires—has risen to at least 24, with nearly 200,000 people displaced and 39,000 acres of land destroyed.

Since filing for bankruptcy a decade ago, 50 cent has rebuilt himself into a commercial and cultural powerhouse

If you weren’t there, it’s very hard to quantify just what a juggernaut 50 Cent was between 2002 and 2007.

From total obscurity to underground buzz to being blackballed by the music industry and then becoming the biggest thing in all of music within a few short years, Curtis Jackson and his brand of street anthems with a pop sensibility was so ubiquitous that he would make even 2024 Taylor Swift blush.

The former Golden Gloves boxer and drug dealer from South Jamaica, Queens put up record numbers, had Billboard hits in abundance in an era where you had to earn them, and possessed the type of crossover appeal that was usually reserved for, well, Eminem.

Even in the early days, 50 was never content to be just another rapper. He leveraged his music success into establishing G-Unit Records — through which he launched the careers of Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, Young Buck and The Game — starring in a movie loosely based on his life and launching a string of widely successful business ventures and endorsement deals.

A formidable opponent when it came to rap beef, he vanquished Ja Rule into a punchline, exposed The Game for not writing his own hits and even inadvertently cost Fat Joe a $20 million deal with Air Jordan. Going into his storied Curtis vs. Graduation chart battle with Kanye West in 2007, Fif was one of the most successful rappers of all time. Such was his midas touch, even Tony Yayo sold more than 200,000 copies in his first week.

Then, of course, Kanye knocked him off his perch and the whole Hip Hop landscape changed. The hits dried up as quickly as they came and cracks soon appeared in his once-dominant partnership with Interscope. There was a public spat with Jimmy Iovine over 50 launching his own rival to Beats By Dre headphones and, in turn, Interscope practically shelved his planned fifth album, Street King Immortal, causing him to depart the label.

At the time, it looked as if 50 Cent would become just another rapper destined to fade away after a short but explosive career. There were failed businesses including his own boxing promotion company and, of course, his infamous 2015 bankruptcy. And while rich people bankruptcy is different to normal people bankruptcy, it was still a bad look for the one-time superstar as his finances were laid bare for the public to see.

But 50 Cent survived nine shots, so write him off at your peril.

Over the last decade, the G-Unit general has rebuilt himself into a cultural and commercial powerhouse, expanding his portfolio with the guile and ruthlessness of a Wall Street executive and dominating several fields as Hip Hop becomes an ever-increasing young man’s game. His financial troubles are firmly in the rearview as 50 is closing in on becoming only Hip Hop’s third ever billionaire.

Mozambique opens new parliament amid opposition protests and boycotts

0

Mozambique has sworn in its new parliament with the streets of the capital largely deserted after the opposition leader called for a strike to protest against the result of highly disputed elections.

Two smaller opposition parties boycotted the opening ceremony on Monday as they refused to accept the outcome of the October election, while the incoming president, Daniel Chapo, called for calm and unity after months of deadly unrest.

Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, who is popular with Mozambique’s marginalised youth, claims the results were rigged in favour of Chapo’s Frelimo party, which has been in power for 50 years.

He urged his supporters at the weekend to “demonstrate our refusal” of the official election result with a national strike from Monday to Wednesday when Chapo is due to be sworn in as president.

Military police surrounded the parliament building and police blocked the main roads to the area during the inauguration ceremony.

The city centre, usually busy on a Monday morning, was deserted with most shops closed and protesters manning barricades in certain areas, the AFP news agency reported.

Al Jazeera’s Fahmida Miller, reporting from Matola neighbourhood, a stronghold of the opposition in Maputo, said people were trying to block a main road into the centre of the capital.

“The aim here by people trying to block the road with burning tyres, with stones – they also throw rocks sometimes – is to stop people passing back and forth on this road and it’s part of the strategy to bring Maputo to a standstill,” she said.

Chapo and outgoing President Filipe Nyusi were present as parliamentarians from Frelimo, which won 171 seats, and the Podemos party – which has 43 – were sworn in to the 250-seat national assembly.

Renamo’s 28 MPs and the eight from the MDM stayed away in protest.

The opening of parliament “constitutes a social outrage and a lack of respect for the will of Mozambicans” who were deprived of “free, fair and transparent” elections, a Renamo spokesman told reporters on Sunday.

The MDM said it was boycotting to show it aligned itself with demands for “electoral truth”.

Official results gave Chapo 65 percent of the presidential vote compared with 24 percent for Mondlane.

But the opposition leader claims he won 53 percent and that Mozambique’s election institutions manipulated the results.

Mondlane returned to Mozambique on Thursday after going into hiding abroad following the October 19 killing of his lawyer.

Thousands of jubilant supporters rallied in the city centre to meet him, prompting clashes with security forces in which at least three people were killed, according to an election monitor.

Unrest since the October 9 election day has claimed about 300 lives, according to a tally by a local rights group, with security forces accused of using excessive force, including live bullets, against demonstrators.

Police officers have also died, according to the authorities.

The unrest has caused major losses to Mozambique’s economy, stopping cross-border trade and affecting shipping, mining and industry.

If “the assembly takes the oath, it is a betrayal of the will of the people”, Mondlane, 50, said via Facebook late on Saturday.

“Let us demonstrate against the inauguration of those who betrayed the will of the people on Monday and against those who stole the will of the people on Wednesday,” he said.

In advance of the opening of parliament, 48-year-old Chapo told reporters that Mozambique needed stability and unity.

With a new parliament in place, “we can continue to work and together, united … to develop our country”, he told journalists, calling for “open, frank debate”.

There have been several calls for dialogue to resolve the standoff but Mondlane has been excluded from talks that Chapo and Nyusi have opened with the leaders of the main political parties.

Mondlane repeated after landing in Maputo on Thursday that he was ready for dialogue. “I’m here in the flesh to say that if you want to negotiate … I’m here,” he said.

Statue of ex-Ghana President Akufo-Addo destroyed

0

A statue of Ghana’s immediate former President, Nana Akufo-Addo, put up at the end of last year has been destroyed.

The unveiling by Akufo-Addo of his own likeness in November in the country’s Western Region sparked a social media backlash, as well as being mocked and described as “self-glorification”.

Its launch had been in honour of the president’s development initiatives.

On Monday, local media shared images showing the statue in a ruined state, with its severed head lying on the ground. It is not clear who had targeted the sculpture or what the motive was.

The torso also appears to have been destroyed, and only a damaged pedestal remains in place.

Akufo-Addo stepped down as president last week after serving two terms in power. His party’s candidate to replace him was heavily defeated in December’s presidential election.

The statue had already been partially vandalised last month with one leg being damaged.

Some local residents had earlier been calling for the sculpture to be removed, but the local authorities had pledged at time of the initial damage to have it repaired.

Its destruction has elicited mixed reactions, with some condemning it while others saying there could have been a better way to deal with it.

One resident told local Citi FM outlet that it was “of no benefit” to the people, “so if it’s destroyed, its normal”.

Another said this was unfortunate and there should have been a “proper, civil way to get it removed” adding that that the action would have negative consequences for supporters of the former president’s party.

Joy FM quoted another resident saying he was happy it had been destroyed.

Last year, critics questioned the use of public funds for its construction especially at a time the country was facing economic hardship.

Ghana has in recent years been experiencing its worst economic crisis in a generation and last year received a $3bn (£2.5bn) bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The cost-of-living crisis was a key campaign issue in last month’s election.

President John Mahama, who won the vote in a landslide, has in the past criticised the erection of the statue.

He said it was up to the people to honour the former president for his achievements, describing the statue as insensitive given the hardships being faced by the people.

Pep Guardiola moving out of his £8.5million mansion in Barcelona after his shock split from wife

Manchester City coach, Pep Guardiola is reportedly moving out of his £8.5million mansion in Barcelona after his shock split from wife Cristina Serra.

On Monday evening, reports from Spain claimed that Guardiola and his wife Cristina had decided to separate after 30 years together and three children.

Guardiola has always stayed at their family home – an £8.4million mansion in Barcelona, whenever he returns to the Catalan capital from Manchester, Mail Online reports.

Cristina is expected to remain in the family home, which used to be owned by Guardiola’s former Mexican centre-back Rafa Marquez.

Guardiola purchased the property, situated in the high part of Barcelona, from a Russian businessman in February 2021. He is understood to have purchased it for €10million (£8.4 million).

Cristina Serra moved into the property two years after leaving Manchester to return to her home city.

Spanish news outlet El Confidencial described the mansion as ‘the perfect place for a separation without anyone discovering when you leave or enter’ although it insisted the couple had spent Christmas together at the property with their three children Maria, 24; Marius, 22; and 17-year-old Valentina.

It added: ‘It’s the €10million (£8.4m) mansion that marked the physical distancing of Guardiola and his wife in 2021.’

Guardiola’s current home – when he’s not in Barcelona – is located in the Deansgate CitySuites in central Manchester.

Meanwhile, the Spanish journalist who broke the shock news has insisted that Guardiola and his wife Cristina did not split because of a third person.

Lorena Vazquez, who forms part of a highly-respected duo of reporters known in Spain as the Mamarazzis, said overnight: ‘It’s been a carefully-considered decision the couple discussed over several months.

‘They continue to have a cordial and affectionate relationship. No-one else is involved. There are no third parties. We are going to carry on seeing them together.’

She added after revealing the couple’s shock split: ‘They weren’t expecting any journalists or media outlets would confirm this break-up but I can assure you they’re living apart and only a small handful of people knew about this.’

100 illegal miners reportedly dead after being trapped for months in South African mine

At least 100 men mining illegally in an abandoned gold mine in South Africa have reportedly died from starvation and dehydration after being trapped underground for months, according to the Mining Affected Communities United in Action Group (MACUA).

More than 500 miners remain trapped in the mine near Stilfontein, northwest of Johannesburg, the group said.

Sabelo Mnguni, MACUA’s spokesperson, told The Associated Press that a cellphone retrieved from rescued miners on Friday contained videos showing dozens of bodies wrapped in plastic deep within the tunnels.

Mnguni stated that police operations to force the miners out of the Buffelsfontein Gold Mine, initiated in November 2023, had inadvertently led to their entrapment. Police had reportedly removed the ropes miners used to enter and exit the shafts and cut off food supplies in an effort to compel them to surface.

Since Friday, 18 bodies have been recovered: nine in a community-led operation and nine more during an official rescue effort by authorities on Monday. The police also reported rescuing 26 survivors on the same day, although verification of the total numbers is ongoing.

The cellphone videos shared by MACUA paint a harrowing picture. One video shows a man filming emaciated individuals in the tunnels, pleading for food and help while revealing dozens of lifeless bodies. “This is hunger,” the man can be heard saying.

The standoff at the mine began when authorities tried to seal it and arrest miners as part of a larger crackdown on illegal mining gangs, often referred to as “zama zamas” or “hustlers.” Illegal mining is a significant issue in South Africa, particularly in gold-rich regions where abandoned mines attract desperate workers searching for leftover deposits.

The South African government faced criticism when it refused to assist the trapped miners in late 2023. MACUA successfully obtained a court order in December requiring police to allow food, water, and medical supplies to reach those underground, but many miners reportedly did not receive assistance in time.

According to Mnguni, the trapped miners include former mine workers who turned to illegal mining after losing their jobs due to mine closures. “These miners are not criminals,” he emphasized. “They go back to the mines because they live in poverty.”

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mine, one of South Africa’s deepest mines at 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles), is a labyrinth of shafts and tunnels. Rescuers face significant challenges locating and reaching the remaining miners. Some survivors reported crawling through tunnels for days to reach alternate exits.

Authorities estimate that hundreds of miners are still underground but lack precise numbers. A delegation from the ministries of police and mineral resources is set to visit the site to oversee ongoing rescue efforts and ensure the safe return of the remaining miners.

Illegal mining operations have long plagued South Africa, with criminal syndicates often controlling access and engaging in violent turf wars. However, advocacy groups argue that many miners are victims of systemic unemployment and economic inequality.

“This tragedy underscores the dire conditions and desperation faced by these miners,” Mnguni said. “It is a stark reminder of the human cost of poverty and the need for sustainable solutions to address the challenges facing mining communities.”

Authorities now hope to conclude rescue efforts and prevent further casualties while addressing the underlying issues that drive illegal mining across the country.

Woman who accused Diddy of r@ping her with a remote control will be featured in an upcoming documentary

A woman who accused Diddy of r@ping her with a remote control will be featured in an upcoming documentary about the disgraced hip-hop mogul.

The Peacock documentary, ‘Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy,’ includes an interview with the alleged victim, who is only identified by her first name, Ashley. Her face will not be shown on camera, according to People.

In October, she sued Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in U.S. District Court in Northern California, where documents identify her as Ashley Parham. Her lawsuit came less than a month after Diddy was arrested and charged with racketeering, s£x trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution.

In the lawsuit, she alleged that she met Diddy in March 2018 after he unexpectedly barged into her friend’s apartment in Orinda, California, along with several other people, including Diddy’s longtime right-hand woman Kristina Khorram.

Her friend, Shane Pearce, had a FaceTime call with Diddy outside of a bar the month before, according to the suit.

During the call, Parham claimed she told Pearce she wasn’t impressed because she believed Diddy ‘had something to do’ with the 1996 assassination of rapper Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas, according to the suit.

The lawsuit said Diddy heard this comment and vowed to make her ‘pay.’

According to the lawsuit, Pearce later ‘set her up’ by inviting her over to his apartment under the guise of helping him with his cancer medication.

That’s when Diddy showed up at the home with his bodyguard, Khorram, and others. Diddy, holding a knife to her face, threatened to cut her cheeks into a ‘Glasgow smile,’ the suit says.

After this, Khorram allegedly threatened Parham, telling her they could ship her overseas where she’d never be heard from again. Parham also makes this claim in the documentary.

In the documentary, according to People, Parham speaks through tears at times and says she’s been isolated since the alleged sexual assault.

‘I’ve become incredibly reclusive,’ she says. ‘I don’t trust anyone.’

The lawsuit states that both Pearce and Diddy removed all of Parham’s clothes, after which Diddy covered her in ‘oil or lubricant.’

Diddy then shoved a TV remote into her vagina, according to the lawsuit.

‘Diddy, while violently raping [Parham] with a television remote, told Plaintiff that her life was in his hands and that if he wanted he could “take her” and she would never be seen again,’ the lawsuit claimed.

After this, Diddy instructed Pearce to flip Parham over on her stomach, according to the lawsuit, before telling him to rape her, too.

The suit claimed that Diddy, Pearce, and two other unnamed individuals took turns raping her.

Diddy also allegedly offered Parham money to say the r@pe was consensual and that she was a s£x worker, according to the complaint.

‘This documentary recycles and perpetuates the same lies and conspiracy theories that have been slung against Mr. Combs for months,’ the statement, given to People, read.

‘It is disappointing to see NBC and Peacock rolling in the same mud as unethical tabloid reporters. By providing a platform for proven liars and opportunists to make false criminal accusations, the documentary is irresponsible journalism of the worst kind.’

The forthcoming documentary also features interviews from Diddy’s childhood friends, his bodyguard, and singer Al B. Sure!, who previously dated the music mogul’s on-and-off girlfriend Kim Porter. It will be available on Peacock Tuesday.

‘It is disappointing to see NBC and Peacock rolling in the same mud as unethical tabloid reporters. By providing a platform for proven liars and opportunists to make false criminal accusations, the documentary is irresponsible journalism of the worst kind.’

His lawyers also said the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department ‘thoroughly investigated and it was determined the claims were “unfounded.”’

The lawyer added that Diddy was ‘nowhere near Orinda, Calif., on the day she claims she was assaulted.’

Diddy is currently incarcerated at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center as he awaits his trial, which is scheduled to begin in May

Farm tour signals Zanu-PF’s strategy for Mnangagwa’s term extension

The recent tour of Precabe Farm by legislators is being interpreted by political observers as an effort to show loyalty to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and to pledge their readiness to facilitate his term extension.

The push for Mnangagwa’s extended presidency is reportedly unfolding through a carefully calculated strategy involving a three-pronged approach. This includes securing a Zanu-PF resolution for constitutional change, using Parliament to ratify the amendments, and mobilizing grassroots support for a referendum to finalize the process. However, the journey toward this goal is fraught with both legal and political challenges that could test the party’s ability to maintain its grip on power.

The first step in this strategy was reportedly achieved during the Zanu-PF National People’s Conference in October 2023, where a resolution was passed to extend Mnangagwa’s term. According to party insiders, the focus has now shifted to securing parliamentary approval for constitutional amendments.

Political analyst Pardon Taodzera believes that the Precabe Farm visit was a symbolic act aimed at consolidating Mnangagwa’s authority within the party, opposition, and Parliament. “The tour was about demonstrating allegiance to Mnangagwa. It signals that legislators are ready to play their part in ensuring his continued stay in office. This is a power play disguised as a field visit,” Taodzera said.

However, the third phase of the strategy—securing public approval through a referendum—presents a significant challenge. While Zanu-PF boasts a well-organized political machine, mobilizing support for an amendment perceived as undemocratic may prove more difficult than anticipated.

Legal expert Aaron Hamauswa cautioned against tampering with the Constitution, warning that such moves could undermine democratic principles. “Zimbabwe’s Constitution provides clear term limits to safeguard against authoritarian rule. Any move to extend these limits undermines the democratic principles enshrined in our laws,” he said.

“While Zanu-PF may have the numbers in Parliament, the real battle will be convincing the electorate to endorse such a change.”

Mnangagwa’s leadership has faced criticism over economic hardships, corruption, and alleged human rights abuses. Despite Zanu-PF’s history of mobilizing rural support, People Unity Party leader Herbert Chimuka argued that the party may face difficulty in selling the initiative to an increasingly disillusioned populace.

“Zimbabweans are grappling with inflation, unemployment, and declining public services. Asking them to support a constitutional amendment that benefits the President personally might provoke resentment rather than loyalty,” he said.

EFF LEADER KASONDE MWENDA WRITES POPE, BEGS TO INCLUDE ZAMBIA ON DEBT CANCELLATION

EFF LEADER KASONDE MWENDA WRITES POPE, BEGS TO INCLUDE ZAMBIA ON DEBT CANCELLATION

“Letter to the Catholic Pope from ZAMBIA”

14th January, 2025.

His Holiness Pope Francis,
The Apostolic Palace,
Vatican City.

Subject: Zambia’s Appeal for Inclusion in the 2025 Jubilee Year Debt Cancellation Program*

Your Holiness,

With profound respect and unwavering faith, we write to Your Holiness on behalf of the Zambian people, expressing our heartfelt appeal for Zambia’s inclusion in the Vatican’s 2025 Jubilee Year Debt Cancellation program as you did in the Jubilee year 2000 when Zambia greatly benefited from your 2000 Debt Cancellation program. As an opposition political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), we are very thankful and today we are compelled to make this plea, given the immense burden of debt our nation faces and the government’s unfortunate decision to decline Your Holiness’s generous advocacy for debt forgiveness.

Zambia, a nation richly blessed with resources yet burdened by decades of unsustainable debt, has long suffered the crippling consequences of economic stagnation and poverty. The Holy See’s call for Jubilee Year debt relief resonates deeply with our people, rooted as it is in the Christian values of forgiveness, justice, and compassion. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity aligns perfectly with the aspirations of millions of Zambians who yearn for a brighter, debt-free future.

Regrettably, the Zambian government’s decision to prioritize the G20 debt restructuring framework over Your Holiness’s offer reflects a short-sighted approach that disregards the transformative potential of the Vatican’s global influence. The G20 framework, while useful, cannot match the moral authority and advocacy of the Catholic Church in galvanizing international support for debt cancellation.

Your Holiness, we humbly request that the Vatican consider Zambia’s dire need for debt relief despite the government’s unenthusiastic stance. As a predominantly Christian nation, Zambia shares a deep spiritual connection with the Catholic Church and its teachings. However, we acknowledge that our government’s recent actions—ranging from undemocratic practices to disrespect towards the Church—may raise concerns.

To this end, we reaffirm our commitment to the principles of democracy, justice, and mutual respect. We urge Your Holiness to view this appeal as a reflection of the Zambian people’s aspirations, rather than the shortcomings of our current leadership. The Jubilee Year’s message of liberation and renewal gives us hope that Zambia’s suffering can be alleviated through the compassionate intervention of the Holy See.

We also pledge to advocate for the restoration of democratic governance and improved relations with the Catholic Church in Zambia. This includes urging our government to end political oppression, respect judicial independence, and engage constructively with the Church.

Your Holiness, the EFF firmly believes that the 2025 Jubilee Year can mark a turning point in Zambia’s history. We implore the Vatican to include Zambia in this noble initiative, thereby offering our nation a chance to break free from the chains of debt and build a future of hope, dignity, and prosperity.

With prayers for Your Holiness’s continued guidance and leadership, we remain,

Yours in Christ,

Kasonde Mwenda C
President
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)
Zambia.

Officials disregarding youth advice will be reported to Hichilema, fired – Liswaniso

UPND National Youth chairperson, Gilbert Liswaniso has fumed at party and government officials who ignore the advice of the youth wing stating that they will be reported to President Hakainde Hichilema so that they can be fired.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18W4zfNoyg/?mibextid=oFDknk

Furthermore, Liswaniso also cautioned against disrespecting Party leaders and the Head of State as they are the ones, whom party members and leaders should take orders from.

However, Liswaniso told officials such as ministers to follow protocol when doing things.

“I’m warning ministers, party members, officials, there is only one chairman of the party Collins Maoma and one secretary general Batuke Imenda where we report all of us.”

“Respect should be given to them, no one should get orders from anyone apart from these people. We need to respect protocol. President Hakainde Hichilema is a friend to everyone, it’s just about levels. In fact the real friends of President Hichilema are the youths and women because they are the ones who see a lot and they campaign for him massively,” said Liswaniso.

The youth leader further said no matter how close one may be to the President, if they are not doing the right thing for the party, then the youth wing will have to make it right by reporting the offenders to the highest office.

“No matter how close you are to the president, we will tell you off. We will advise you. If we advise you and you don’t want to listen to us, we will tell the president. If you don’t want to want to hear what we tell you as youth wing, we will tell the president that you are not with us. We only have one president and we need to support him,” noted Liswaniso on Hot FM this morning.

Meanwhile, Liswaniso added that the UPND is open to criticism and those who have issues to raise are free to reach out to the party.

“When people complain, it doesn’t mean that they hate you, we are open to criticism. We have received a lot of criticism since our time in opposition. We listen to them. As UPND, we are happy that we are running the country with people when they complain because it means they want us to do more,” he said.

But Liswaniso reiterated that just because the ruling party allows criticism doesn’t mean that people should insult or break the law when addressing their issues.

“If you break the law, you will definitely be arrested. We have heard of many people, politicians criticising the party but they don’t get arrested but if they break the law, then the police will arrest them. If you insult or use bad language, then definitely you will be arrested,” added Liswaniso.

He appealed to the Zambia Police Service to communicate to the people of Zambia on how the rule of law works so that when they are arrested for breaking the law, they don’t get shocked.

Jay Jay’s friend, PF MPs support UPND candidate for Petauke

Jay Jay’s friend, PF MPs support UPND candidate for Petauke

A CLOSE friend of fugitive, former Petauke Central Member of Parliament (MP) Emmanuel Banda and other PF MPs have endorsed UPND candidate Severian Lungu as the right person to take the helm of the Eastern Province constituency in the forthcoming by-election.

Chipangali PF MP Andrew Lubusha, a close ally of Jay Jay said God has given Petauke Central residents another chance to redeem themselves with the by-election so that they can vote for Lungu and work with Government of the day.

Lubusha said it was important for the people of Petauke to work with the government of the day in order for their constituency to develop.

He applauded President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership which he described as inclusive when it comes to delivering development.

“President Hakainde Hichilema has been so inclusive. He has made sure that the chiefs have been supported in many ways.”

“God indeed loves the people of Petauke because he has given them another chance to redeem themselves and work with the government of the day led by President Hichilema. So we urge the people of Petauke to support Severian, the candidate for UPND,” said Lubusha.

He added that the UPND candidate is a noble leader who has been devoted to his constituency for quite some time.

“Severian is a very noble leader of very good character and he’s been in Petauke for quite some time, he is an indigenous son of the soil, there are so many good things that comes out of working with the government of the day so let the people of Petauke give Severian the opportunity to lead them so they can grow,” he advised.

And independent MP for Chasefu, Misheck Nyambose said some parts of Eastern Province were abandoned during the PF as development was not distributed equally.

He stated that since President Hichilema took office, the province has witnessed equal development regardless of one’s political affiliation.

“I just want to assure the people of Petauke that we will work very hard to ensure that Severian Lungu will be elected as the MP for Petauke so you can enjoy your cake in peace,” said Nyambose.

The two Parliamentarians made these remarks, when they accompanied State House Special Assistant for Political Affairs Levy Ngoma who paid a courtesy call on Chief Mumbi of the Nsenga people of Petauke District.

Msanzala PF MP Elias Daka reiterated that he will ensure that the UPND candidate makes it through as the best choice for the people of Petauke.

Meanwhile, PF faction president, Miles Sampa threatened to expell the three PF MPs that rendered support to the UPND candidates in the February 6, Parliamentary by-election in Petauke Central.

“The Constitution is very clear. The 3 Eastern MPs have voluntarily resigned from the PF to UPND. We will be writing to Parliament and ECZ to remind them to hold by-elections in 90 days,” posted Sampa on Facebook.

“The law says the 3 won’t be eligible to recontest even under the UPND.”

I HAVE A CHILD WITH DANDY KRAZY’S DAUGHTER – TRIPLE M

I HAVE A CHILD WITH KING DANDY’S DAUGHTER – TRIPLE M

By ZR Reporter

Dandy Krazy’s daughter’s story is not a rumour, it’s true, Tripple M man’s up.

The multi-award-winning rapper however clarified that the young lady in question is not pregnant as rumours suggest, but that they have a five-month-old daughter with the late legend’s daughter.

“She is not pregnant, me and her have a child. We have had a child for a long time. The baby is five months, a girl child. I believe in Karma, Karma is real. I’m one person and artist who differentiate between Triple M and Musonda. Triple M is an artiste and if at all people are interested to know anything other than art then they want to know Musonda,” he disclosed when he featured on That Zed Podcast in today’s episode.

He said despite being an artiste, he also has a family and a private life.

Tripple M lamented that people who are spreading the news on social media do not know for how long he and Dandy’s daughter have been dating.

He said he would not deny his responsibility as a father.

“The reason I am saying I am too young is how I have seen people wanting to fight me so I say but I am too young,” he said.

Tripple M said he is a responsible father and opened up on how being a responsible father has opened up doors of blessing for him.

To the people who he said lack wisdom by using the late King Dandy’s daughter, he said “it is not right, she is big and she has her own life.”

“Humanity is everything, this is a person who has just lost the father. Where is your human to say this person has just lost the father, we cannot talk about this? I believe in karma, karma is real. Whatever you do now has a way of coming back in future,” he said.

“What is so wrong about King Dandy having a grandchild? You are hurting children of the deceased, you also have children, what if the same happens to your children when you die? Some are just educated but lack wisdom.”

He said “I think this is something that the late wanted, he loved keeping family matters private. Let the girl mourn, that is her father.”

The Chairperson- The African Union (AU),

SUBJECT; DETORIARIATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN ZAMBIA-THE CASE OF HON. MUMBI PHIRI AND OTHERS

Mrs. Hon. Mumbi Phiri is a member of the Opposition party, the Patriotic Front. She is a former Member of Parliament for Munali Constituency in Lusaka.

She is also a former Deputy Secretary General of the Party.

In February 2022, Hon. Mumbi Phiri was charged and arrested for murder.  She was subjected to a trial and was imprisoned for over 428 days.

The charges against her were false but she suffered this incarceration.

Hon. Mumbi has once again been arrested and charged with armed robbery, false charges that arise from her brave act to expose and attempt to stop electoral fraud in the Kawambwa by-election that was being perpetrated by Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Mposha.

The case of Hon. Mumbi is not different from the false and fabricated charges that have been concocted and preferred against members of the Opposition;

1. Socialist Party President Dr, Fred Mmembe- Charged with Sedition.

2. Given Lubinda- Charged and arrested for refusing to attend to the Committee on parliamentary privileges and failure to surrender passport.

3. Patriotic Front Secretary General, Hon. Raphael Nakacinda -Hate Speech, Sedition, Criminal Defamation.

4. Patriotic Front Chairperson for Information and Publicity and Presidential Candidate, Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba charged with sedition, assaulting a police officer after he was brutalized and beaten by the same police officers, and for disorderly conduct at the police station.

12. Patriotic Front Eastern Province Information Secretary, Rizwan Patel and two others- charged with aggravated robbery.

13. A large number of social-media bloggers, and vloggers have been arrested and prosecuted for their criticism of government.

The action by the Zambia Police to be used to clamp down on members of the Opposition is part of the larger goal to seriously destabilize the Opposition ahead of the 2026 elections, render it extremely weak and eliminate strong contenders against President Hakainde Hichilema.

Both the Zambia Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions have refused to prosecute persons such as the Minister of Education, Mr. Douglas Siakalima who has publicly issued tribal remarks and hate speech against the people of Luapula and Bembas, and a UPND youth from Northwestern Province Chikokela Moses who has pledged to eliminate the life of the former President, Edgar Lungu.

Further, President Hakainde Hichilema, and the Zambia Police have refused to deal with persons at State House implicated in the abduction and torture of Petauke Central Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Jay Banda.

Further President Hichilema has engaged in malicious actions that have obliterated the independence and autonomy of democratic institutions and has severely undermined the separation of powers among the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary which are under firmly under the control and direction of the Executive.

This is exemplified by the action of the Constitutional Court, acting on a petition from a UPND Youth, Michelo Chizombe and perpetrated y Government to stop and prevent former President Edgar Lungu from participating in presidential elections.

Further members of the Opposition have been incarcerated and denied the right to appeal and prevented from obtaining bail pending appeal thereby breaching their fundamental right to appeal and right to innocence until the process is completed.

Zambia has recently been cited and recorded for flagrantly breaching human rights, shrinking the media and democratic space, restrict operations of the Opposition. These reports are contained in the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, the United States Department Country Report on Human Rights Practices, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have expressed concern about this sadden development.

These autocratic and dictatorial actions by the Government of President Hakainde Hichilema, have undermined Zambia’s national peace and security and places it on a dangerous course of possible civil unrest and instability.

It is imperative that organisations and entities such as yours, record, recognize and speak against these human rights abuses and threats against Zambia’s democracy to promote nationhood, peace and security in Zambia and the region.

Further it is important that diplomatic and international pressure is brought to bear to have Hon. Mumbi Phiri to be released and charges against her and other members of the Opposition be dropped.

NHIMA NEEDS TO BE SAVED BECAUSE IT SAVES LIVES – DR CHITALU CHILIFYA

NHIMA NEEDS TO BE SAVED BECAUSE IT SAVES LIVES – DR CHITALU CHILIFYA

Former Health Minister in the PF regime Dr Chitalu Chilufya has called for the urgent saving of the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) from collapse, warning that allowing it to fail would be walking into a “d£ath trap” for Zambians.

Dr Chilufya said that NHIMA plays a critical role in providing access to quality healthcare services, and its demise would lead to increased m0rbidity, m0rtality, and p0verty.

He attributed the current financial struggles of NHIMA to policy, strategic, and management inaction, despite warnings from the 2022 NHIMA Actuarial Valuation that the scheme would become insolvent by 2024 if reforms were not implemented.

According to Dr Chilufya, the collapse of NHIMA would have far-reaching consequences, including the erosion of progress made towards achieving Universal Health Coverage and the country’s Vision 2030 goals.

He stressed that it is imperative for the government to take immediate action to address the governance failures, expand contribution and membership, and implement financing reforms to save NHIMA.

Dr Chilufya has proposed several key policy steps, including the reconstitution of the NHIMA board, implementation of a solid contribution and membership expansion program, and a one-off deficit financing to plug the hole in outstanding claims.

He also emphasized the need to trigger immediate financing reforms, such as moving NHIMA contributions from basic income to gross income, introducing a statutory mandatory minimum contribution for both the formal and informal sectors, and providing a capital injection and appropriation for operations.

He noted that these reforms would not only raise additional income but also ensure that employers’ contribution avoidance is curbed.

The former health minister also highlighted the need for NHIMA to standardize prices for services for both the public and private sectors to contain costs.

He warned that if NHIMA is allowed to collapse, it would be a betrayal of the aspirations of achieving Universal Health Coverage, which aims to ensure that all Zambians access quality insured healthcare services without suffering.

DEC NABS FORMER UNZA ADMIN FOR STEALING HALF A MILLION US DOLLARS OF DONOR FUNDS

DEC NABS FORMER UNZA ADMIN FOR STEALING HALF A MILLION US DOLLARS OF DONOR FUNDS

A FORMER administrator at the University of Zambia’s School of Medicine, has been arrested on allegations that he stole over half a million US dollars from research study funds and laundering the money through personal bank accounts.

49 year old Chafye Siuluta, is accused of stealing US$ 557,652 from research study funds between 2018 and 2022, following investigations conducted by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC)’s Anti- Money Laundering  Investigations Unit (AMLIU).

Siuluta allegedly used some of the stolen money to purchase three properties in Lusaka’s Meanwood Ibex, which AMLIU has seized as proceeds of crime.

“Particulars of the offences are that; Chafye Enerst Ali Siuluta, jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown, on dates unknown, but between 1st January 2018 and 31st March 2022, in Lusaka… did steal money amounting to US$ 557, 652 by fraudulently raising Cheque Payments from Institutional research study accounts in the names of known individuals,” DEC spokesperson Allan Tamba disclosed.

“The known individuals later handed over the money to Mr. Siuluta, while part of the money was deposited into Siuluta’s Personal Bank Accounts domiciled at various Banks.”

Tamba said Suluta reportedly raised the payments to settle obligations for various goods and services delivered and rendered to the University of Zambia’s, School of Medicine in respect of the University Teaching Hospital research projects when in fact not.

“Furthermore, with intent to defraud, Siuluta initiated withdraw instructions to pay-out cash to known persons in the sum of US$ 22,850 from research accounts held at a named Bank.”

“In connection with the money laundering charge imposed on Siuluta, the Commission has since seized three houses and apartments in Lusaka’s Meanwood Ibex as the same, are reasonably believed to be proceeds of crime,” said Tamba.

He added that the suspect has since been released on Police Bond, awaiting trial.

The Commission warned those intending to steal donor funds: “Offenders will be dealt with sternly; within the confines of the law. We take great interest in the manner in which institutions manage public resources and as such, those found wanting will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.”

POLICE CONDEMN MOB JUSTICE AND DESTRUCTION OF PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE

POLICE CONDEMN MOB JUSTICE AND DESTRUCTION OF PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE

The Zambia Police Service strongly condemns incidents of mob justice and the destruction of public infrastructure. Such acts undermine the rule of law, disrupt public safety, and put innocent lives at risk.

Public infrastructure, including police posts, is established to serve and protect communities, and its destruction hampers our ability to provide timely services, leaving citizens vulnerable to criminal activities.

We remind the public that taking the law into their own hands is not only illegal but also counterproductive. Justice can only be effectively administered through established legal channels.

CASE OF MURDER -MUNUNGA POLICE POSTWe wish to inform the public of a tragic incident reported on January 13, 2025 at Mununga Police Post under Chienge Police Station. At around 09:00 hours, F/Given Mumba, aged 40, of Chiseketi Village, Chief Mununga, District Chienge, reported her niece, Grace Kaoma, aged 44, of Kapampale Village, missing since 06:00 hours on January 12, 2025.

While the family was searching, they received a call from Ms. Kaoma’s former husband, Derrick Mwale, stating that she was dead and buried near her farming field.

Upon receiving this alarming report, police rushed to the scene and confirmed the incident.

The deceased was found buried in a bush, with a hoe discovered nearby. A physical inspection revealed injuries, including bleeding from the mouth and nose, bruises on her right hand, and a swollen face, suggesting she may have been assaulted with an unknown object.Brief facts reveal that Grace Kaoma had been receiving threats from her former husband, Derrick Mwale, following their divorce.

Police investigations led to the apprehension of the suspect at 23:00 hours yesterday January 13, 2025, and he was detained at Mununga Police Post.

MOB ATTACK AND DAMAGE TO POLICE INFRASTRUCTURERegrettably, today January 14,2025 at around 05:00 hours, a mob gathered at Mununga Police Post upon learning of the suspect’s detention.

The mob attacked the officers on duty, broke into the cells, and extensively damaged the police post.

They forcibly removed the suspect and subjected him to severe mob violence, leaving him with deep cuts on the head. The situation was brought under control with reinforcement from Chienge Police Station.

The injured suspect was rushed to a nearby clinic, where he is currently admitted in unstable condition.

APPEAL TO THE PUBLICWe urge all community members to allow the police to conduct thorough investigations and bring offenders to justice through the proper channels. Mob justice and the destruction of police facilities hinder the very justice the public seeks and embolden criminal elements in society.

Members of the public are reminded that such actions constitute serious offenses punishable under the laws of Zambia. We also appeal for calm and cooperation as investigations into this matter continue.

CHEAP PROPAGANDA HURTS THE NATION: STOP IT ! – Hon. Sunday  Chanda

Hon. Sunday Chilufya Chanda writes:

CHEAP PROPAGANDA HURTS THE NATION: STOP IT !

The recent circulation of a fake story claiming that Zambia had been blacklisted and expelled from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHCR) is a stark reminder of the damage caused by irresponsible and baseless propaganda. This false narrative, amplified by some in the opposition, including former senior government officials, is not only misleading but also harmful to Zambia’s image on the international stage.

As Zambians, we must collectively guard against the tendency to prioritize political gains over the reputation of our country. Baseless accusations and the propagation of fake news undermine the very fabric of our democracy and erode trust among citizens. Moreover, such actions risk alienating Zambia from the global community, which recognizes us as a nation that upholds peace, hospitality, and the rule of law.

It is concerning that individuals who once held positions of responsibility and influence – and who seek to preside over the affairs of the country once again – would engage in the dissemination of misinformation, knowing full well the potential consequences. Leadership, whether in government or opposition, comes with the duty to protect and promote the country’s interests – not tarnish them.

The United Nations in Zambia has clarified that Zambia has not been blacklisted or expelled from the UNHCR. This should serve as a reminder that truth prevails over lies. As citizens, we must question the motives behind such propaganda and reject attempts to mislead the public for personal or political gain.

Let us focus on constructive dialogue and solutions that uplift Zambia rather than tear it down. A united, informed, and vigilant citizenry is the best defense against those who seek to harm our nation’s image through deceit. Zambia deserves better, and it starts with each of us choosing truth over lies.

Undermining Democracy: President Hichilema’s Campaign Donations and the Abduction Scandal in Petauke- Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

Undermining Democracy: President Hichilema’s Campaign Donations and the Abduction Scandal in Petauke

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

In a concerning display of disregard for democratic principles, President Hakainde Hichilema, through his political advisor Levy Ngoma — a figure allegedly linked to the controversial abduction of Hon. JJ Banda, alongside Clayson Hamasaka and Trevor Mwiinde — made a donation of K100,000 to the Reformed Church of Zambia (RCZ) in Petauke, claiming it was for sustainability and empowerment. This donation was made during the campaign period for the Petauke Central parliamentary by-election scheduled for February 6, 2025. This brazen act raises serious questions about respect for the rule of law and the integrity of Zambia’s electoral process. The question that begs an answer is: Was the law quietly amended to allow such actions, or is President Hichilema openly flouting it?

Under Zambia’s electoral regulations, donations during campaign periods are expressly forbidden to prevent undue influence and foster fair competition. The law’s purpose is unambiguous — elections must be decided by voters on the basis of policies, leadership qualities, and vision, not material inducements. When a sitting President engages in donations during a campaign, it erodes the fairness of the election and casts doubt on the sincerity of his commitment to democracy.

How the Petauke Central Parliamentary Seat Became Vacant

The Petauke Central parliamentary seat fell vacant under troubling circumstances. Hon. JJ Banda, the independent Member of Parliament for Petauke Central, was forcibly abducted by individuals allegedly linked to the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), including Levy Ngoma.

From the events surrounding the abduction scandal, it has become evident that the Petauke Central parliamentary seat was highly coveted by the UPND. The orchestrated ordeal, which led to Hon. JJ Banda’s disappearance and persecution, seems to be part of a broader strategy aimed at securing this key political position for the ruling party.

Hon. JJ Banda endured a nightmarish ordeal at the hands of UPND officials. Senior party members, including Levy Ngoma, Clayson Hamasaka, and Trevor Mwiinde, allegedly abducted, tortured, and abandoned him in Kafue, expecting him to succumb to his injuries. Against all odds, he survived and shared his story — a courageous act that exposed a dark chapter in Zambia’s political landscape.

When Hon. JJ Banda was found and taken to Medcare Hospital by his family, the Zambia Police’s response was as shocking as it was telling. Instead of treating him as a victim, the police forcibly removed him from Medcare Hospital and took him to Maina Soko Hospital, a military facility, without his family’s approval. This brazen action sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning why a victim of such a heinous crime was being treated like a criminal.

The scandal took a darker turn with the emergence of leaked audio recordings implicating two Permanent Secretaries, Thabo Kawana and Matembo, as well as Minister of Lands Hon. Sylvia Masebo, in attempts to coerce Hon. JJ Banda into exonerating his alleged abductors. Despite the audios being widely circulated, the Zambia Police have shown no interest in pursuing an investigation.

Instead, the police reopened an eight-year-old case against Hon. JJ Banda, which had already been adjudicated, on direct orders from President Hichilema. This move was widely seen as an attempt to intimidate him and suppress his account of the abduction, shielding the UPND officials implicated in the crime.

The police went further, fabricating a non-bailable aggravated robbery case against Hon. JJ Banda to keep him in jail. All of this was done to cover up the abduction scandal involving UPND officials.

Hon. JJ Banda was later taken to Chipata and imprisoned on the fabricated charges. While in prison, he fell ill and was taken to the hospital for medical attention. It was from this hospital that he mysteriously disappeared under unexplained circumstances. Wherever he may be, we hope and pray that the Lord keeps him safe, because what he has endured is nothing short of political persecution. He is now a political prisoner fleeing the dictatorial tendencies of President Hakainde Hichilema.

Abrogating the Constitution with Impunity

President Hichilema rose to power on promises of upholding the rule of law and strengthening democratic institutions. Yet, his actions in Petauke starkly contradict these commitments. Why has he chosen to trample the law with such impunity? If the head of state disregards the very laws he swore to uphold, how can citizens trust the system of governance? Such behavior sends a dangerous message: that power, not principle, dictates action.

Many Zambians vividly remember how President Hichilema, while in opposition, passionately condemned similar conduct as electoral malpractice. His words were sharp, and his principles seemed firm. Now, with the tables turned, one must ask — what changed? The people of Zambia deserve a leader who embodies consistency, integrity, and respect for democratic norms, not someone who shifts positions when it is politically convenient.

A Dangerous Precedent

President Hichilema’s actions set a perilous precedent. By normalizing donations from those in power during campaigns, the political landscape risks descending into a culture where money and material gifts, rather than ideas and competence, become the deciding factors. This practice undermines democracy’s core values and weakens the institutions meant to safeguard free and fair elections. If left unchallenged, it will not only compromise the integrity of current contests but also erode trust in future electoral processes.

Conclusion

President Hichilema must be held accountable for his actions. The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and other oversight bodies have a duty to ensure that such electoral malpractices are not condoned, as they breach campaign laws. More importantly, the President himself must demonstrate that no one — not even the highest officeholder — is above the law. His leadership must reflect the promises he made to the Zambian people, or his credibility will continue to unravel.

Zambia’s democracy does not belong to any one individual. It is a collective responsibility built on law, fairness, and accountability. President Hichilema’s actions threaten these foundations, and the nation’s future depends on restoring respect for its democratic processes. The rule of law is not a tool to be used selectively — it is the bedrock of true leadership and governance.

* *_Without fear or favor*,

As we reflect on the importance of effective leadership in a democratic society, I’d like to take a moment to appreciate one outstanding lawmaker who embodies the principles of objective criticism. In a democracy, criticism is essential for holding those in power accountable and driving positive change. However, not all criticism is created equal. Some leaders excel at providing constructive feedback that is both respectful and impactful.

In this context, I’d like to highlight the exemplary work of Hon. George Chisanga, a lawmaker from Lukashya. His approach to criticism is a masterclass in effective communication, demonstrating a deep understanding of the rules of engagement in a democratic society. What sets him apart is his ability to articulate his thoughts without resorting to pettiness, disparagement, or vulgar language. Instead, he focuses on providing thoughtful, well-reasoned critiques that are devoid of personal attacks or insults.

As we analyze Hon. Chisanga’s approach, it’s clear that he has mastered the art of critical communication. His speeches are engaging, informative, and respectful, making him a compelling example of effective leadership in a democratic society. In the following sections, we’ll delve deeper into the characteristics that make Hon. Chisanga is an exemplary lawmaker and explores what we can learn from his approach to objective criticism.

Hon. George Chisanga, the Lukashya law maker, is a true embodiment of effective communication. Whenever he addresses the press, his tone is palpably sober, reflecting his mastery of the fundamental rules of communication. His speeches are not only sweet and engaging but also devoid of pettiness, disparagement, vulgar language, insults, and demeaning remarks ¹.

What’s striking about Hon. Chisanga’s communication style is its addictive nature. When he concludes his talks, you can’t help but feel that he could have continued articulating his thoughts. This is a testament to his exceptional critical communication skills, which are grounded in the principles of effective communication taught in faculties of mass communication.

In stark contrast, some opposition leaders, particularly those from the PF party, have struggled to communicate objectively on national platforms. Their language has often been marred by vulgarity, bitterness, and anger towards the current leadership and party. This approach is not only unnecessary but also counterproductive, as it undermines the credibility of the opposition and creates division among citizens.

Most former members of the Patriotic Front (PF) former cabinet ministers who are currently in prison today have something in common: they all used vulgar language against the UPND leadership when they were in opposition. This is a striking observation, especially when compared to the likes of Hon. George Chisanga, who has demonstrated a mastery of critical communication skills, always maintains a sober and respectful tone in his speeches.

It’s worth noting that the PF party has faced numerous challenges, including allegations of human rights abuses and suppression of opposition voices while in government before they lost power in 2021. The party’s current secretary general, Hon. Raphael Nakacinda has been charged with hate speech, sedition, and criminal defamation, among other offenses.

The contrast between the PF’s approach and that of leaders like Hon. Chisanga is stark. While some opposition leaders have resorted to vulgar language and personal attacks, others have chosen to engage in constructive criticism and respectful dialogue. As we move forward, it’s essential that we promote a culture of civility and respect in our public discourse.

Rather than resorting to negativity and personal attacks, opposition leaders would do well to emulate Hon. Chisanga’s approach. By focusing on constructive criticism and civility, they can engage in meaningful debates that drive progress and benefit the nation as a whole. As President Hichilema has emphasized, “opposition, ruling party, we are one.” It’s time for opposition leaders to take a cue from Hon. Chisanga and prioritize collaborative governance over petty politics.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that emulating Hon. George Chisanga’s approach can transform Zambia’s political landscape. I urge opposition leaders like Dr. Fred Mmembe of the Socialist Party, KBF of the Zambia Must Prosper, Dr. Harry Kalaba of the Citizens First, Given Lubinda of the Patriotic Front, Kaluba Simuyemba of the Movement for Change, Roosevelt Tonga of the 3rd Liberation Movement, and Kasonde Mweenda of the Economic Freedom Fighters just to mention but a few to adopt a more constructive tone, using respectful language to offer objective criticism, rather than resorting to bitterness and mockery. Once you offer objective criticism, it will be very easy for the electorate to pick up the 8th president of Zambia, who they can invest in their powers to govern them prudently devoid of bitterness and vindictiveness. Whether we like it or not, the 8th president will come one day.

I submit my perspective without bias or prejudice.

Election is not an event but a process, so is rigging

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba wrote;

Holding a general election is a process; from a fair proces of registration of voters,to holding of campaigns, printing of ballots, to voting, counting, totalling and release of verified results.

Election is not an event, it’s a process. It therefore ought to be a fair, objective and transparent process.

This include independent oversight processes such as monitoring and observation of the election by party agents and independent Observers.

As has been seen in the past, at any stage, the process can be interfered with the intention to undermine the poll outcome.

Already the Zaloumis Mwangala led Commission has shown open bias torwards the UPND and against the Opposition.

ECZ has barred the participation of the Patriotic Front in any election. With impunity, it has called elections that have been stopped by the courts of law as seen in Kabushi, Kwacha sland Kawambwa by-elections.

ECZ has allowed and perpetuated irregularties in elections. It has not prevented violence or punished perpetrators of it.

Opposition accredited polling agents have been beaten and removed from inside polling stations, in the presence of both the police and ECZ  and ECZ has ignored this blatant attack on the electoral process thereby making it an active acccessory to the crime of stealing an election and thwarting the expressed will of the people.

Now ECZ has suddenly and without discernible cause cancelled a legitimate award of the tender for the printing and delivery of various electoral materials.

On 28th October, 2024 ECZ announced the intention to award the contract for the printing of ballot papers and other electoral materials to Ren Form CC of South Africa.

But on Monday,13th January,2025, the Commission notified the public that Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing of United Arab Emirates had been awarded the contract to print and deliver ballot papers and other election materials.

The contract with Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing was signed the other day, on 10th January 2025. And despite previous pledges thst the printing of ballots will be granted to Government Printers, this plan has been abandoned.

It is public knowledge that there are numerous government deals being offered and done with entities from the UAE, from energy power purchase agreements with ZESCO and to now contract to print ballot papers for the 2026 general election.

The Opposition has demanded the dismissal or removal of ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis and Commissioner Mcdonald Chipenzi as they are established members of the ruling UPND party.

The Opposition has also demanded the removal of the Chief Electoral Officer, Brown Kasaro for his previous and serious disciplinary case of misconduct record at ECZ.

But all these concerns, pursued to make the Electoral Commission of Zambia independent enough to process and deliver credible, free, democratic and fair elections have been ignored.

Holding of credible, free, fair and democratic elections is one of the key factors to guarantee peace and security in the nation.

Therefore actions that undermine these principles go to endanger the security and stability of a nation.

ECZ must recognise this role its trusted to play as an impartial referee and must act as a midwife to deliver the free expression abd delivery of the will of the people through the ballot.

Zambia’s Broken Justice: How Inspector General of Police Graphael Musamba Has Divided the Nation Into Those Under the Law and Those Above It

Zambia’s Broken Justice: How Inspector General of Police Graphael Musamba Has Divided the Nation Into Those Under the Law and Those Above It

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

Zambia, like many nations, has long prided itself on being a country of laws—where the rule of law is supposed to be applied equally to all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations, economic standing, or social status. However, under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema’s government, an alarming and undeniable shift has occurred: we now have two distinct classes of citizens in Zambia. There are those who are subjected to the law, and then there are those who are exempted, existing above it. This troubling divide is largely the result of the actions and policies driven by Inspector General of Police Graphael Musamba, whose tenure has emboldened a culture of selective justice.

Under Musamba’s stewardship, Zambia’s justice system has been co-opted to protect the powerful while punishing critics and opposition members. The clearest beneficiaries of this system are officials of the United Party for National Development (UPND), who enjoy immunity from prosecution, even when there is clear evidence of wrongdoing.

The Emerging Two-Tiered System of Citizenship

In any functioning democracy, justice must be impartial, blind to social standing or political connections. In Zambia, however, the distinction between the ordinary citizen and those connected to the UPND government has become glaring. Ordinary citizens face swift, often harsh, legal action for minor infractions, while UPND-affiliated individuals appear above the law, shielded from accountability by state institutions. The role of IG Musamba in facilitating this uneven application of justice cannot be overlooked.

The claim that “you are on your own” when you break the law, repeated by President Hakainde Hichilema as a supposed reassurance of impartiality, has proven to be a myth. The truth is far more troubling: UPND officials are never on their own. The system bends over backwards to protect them from the very consequences it ruthlessly imposes on others.

False Assurances vs. Reality

President Hichilema’s promises of impartial justice have been betrayed by actions that prove otherwise. Despite public assurances that no one is above the law, high-profile cases involving UPND officials have been met with silence, inaction, or brazen interference to protect political allies. These incidents are not isolated—they are symptomatic of a government that treats justice as a tool for political control.

A Case Study of Impunity in Action: The Kawana-Matembo-Masebo Scandal

A clear example of this selective justice can be found in the Hon. Emmanuel Banda abduction case, where leaked audio recordings exposed senior government officials pressuring him to exonerate his alleged abductors. In the recordings, Permanent Secretaries Thabo Kawana and Matembo, alongside Hon. Sylvia Masebo, were heard blatantly interfering in the case, urging Hon J J Banda to drop accusations against UPND operatives who had allegedly abducted and brutalized him.

Despite the undeniable evidence of direct political interference and abuse of power, no legal action was taken against these senior officials. Instead of an impartial investigation, Zambians were subjected to a spectacle of press briefings where the implicated officials brazenly exonerated themselves. This is not justice.
In a democracy governed by the rule of law, press briefings do not substitute due process. The fact that Kawana, Matembo, and Masebo could simply declare their innocence in front of cameras, rather than face an independent inquiry, highlights the extent to which the justice system has been compromised. If an ordinary Zambian were caught interfering in a criminal investigation, they would face swift and severe legal consequences. Yet, for the ruling elite, public relations stunts suffice as justice.

The Bruce Kanema Incident and the Pattern of Protection

This case is not unique. It follows a now-familiar pattern of impunity where political affiliation determines the outcome of legal matters. Bruce Kanema, a UPND official, made inflammatory threats against former President Edgar Lungu in a widely circulated video. Despite public outrage and clear grounds for prosecution, no action was taken against him. Instead, individuals who spoke out against Kanema were subjected to the full weight of the law. The selective application of justice under Inspector General Musamba’s leadership is deliberate, systemic, and dangerous.

The Cost of Divided Justice

When political elites are shielded from the consequences of their actions, the very foundation of society erodes. Public trust in institutions wanes, social cohesion weakens, and the rule of law collapses into rule by privilege. A legal system that protects the powerful while punishing the powerless breeds inequality, resentment, and instability. This is the perilous path Zambia now walks.

IG Graphael Musamba, as the country’s chief law enforcement officer, bears direct responsibility for enabling this culture of impunity. His tenure has marked a clear departure from justice and accountability, turning the police  service into an instrument of political favoritism rather than a defender of public order.

Conclusion: Restoring Justice and Accountability

Zambia’s future hinges on reclaiming the rule of law. The division of citizens into those under the law and those above it must end. No official—no matter how senior or politically connected—should be immune from investigation or prosecution. Justice must be seen and applied impartially, with clear consequences for interference and corruption.

The Kawana-Matembo-Masebo incident is a stark reminder of how far Zambia has strayed from justice. Holding press briefings to declare innocence is not justice. Shielding political allies from prosecution is not justice. True justice demands accountability, impartial investigations, and consequences for abuse of power. Until these principles are restored, Zambia’s democracy will remain in peril, weakened by the very forces meant to protect it.

The people of Zambia must demand better. Equality before the law is not a privilege—it is a right.

Speech by the Chief Electoral Officer during the Media Briefing on the 2026 General Election Roadmap

Speech by the Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), Mr. Brown Kasaro, during the Media Briefing on the 2026 General Election Roadmap in Lusaka, Today, 13th  January 2025.

On behalf of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), it is my pleasure to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to you all to this first press briefing this year. As we step into the year 2025, let me begin by wishing each of you a Happy New Year!
I would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for the unwavering support you have rendered to the Commission throughout the past years. Your partnership and collaboration have been invaluable, and we deeply appreciate the role you play as key stakeholders in the electoral process.

I am delighted to note that we are live streaming this briefing on various social media platforms, including our official ECZ Facebook page. To all our stakeholders joining us virtually this morning, I extend the same warm wishes for a happy and prosperous 2025.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us as we continue working together to strengthen Zambia’s electoral process.
As we start the year 2025, the Commission is pleased to provide you, our esteemed stakeholders, with an update on the preparations for the 2026 General Election.

On 19th July 2024, the Electoral Commission of Zambia launched the 2026 General Election Roadmap. This roadmap serves as a strategic guide for the activities to be undertaken before, during, and after the 2026 General Election. During the launch, the Commission made a commitment to regularly update stakeholders on the progress of preparations and key milestones.

Today, we gather to fulfil that commitment and ensure that you remain informed and engaged as we move closer to the election date.

Allow me to highlight some key milestones achieved so far and activities of the Roadmap for this year 2025:

1. Printing and delivery of Ballot Papers and other election materials
As you our stakeholders may recall, the Electoral Commission of Zambia on 6th May, 2024, re-issued the tender for the printing and delivery of various electoral materials. These materials include ballot papers, ballot paper posters, blind voter templates, announcement forms, voter’s lists, and registers of voters. This tender is for a three-year contract period to cater for by-elections and the 2026 General Election.

The tender was open to all eligible bidders, both local and international, and was administered following the rules under Open International Competitive bidding procedures as provided for in the Public Procurement Act. No. 8 of 2020 and Public Procurement Regulations, 2022.

The tender for printing and delivery of ballot papers and other electoral materials closed on 18th June, 2024. The Commission received a total of Seven (07) bid submissions comprising six (6) international and one (1) local as at the close of the tender.

Following the conclusion of the bids evaluation process, the Commission issued a public notification on 28th October, 2024 on the intention to award the contract for the Printing of Ballot Papers and other electoral materials to Ren Form CC of South Africa.

However, the Commission could not proceed to execute the contract with Ren Form CC of South Africa. This is in line with Section 180 (4) of the Public Procurement Regulation 2022 which states that:
“A procuring entity shall, where the recommended bidder fails to conclude a contract, or provide a performance security or any other action required by the solicitation document, annul the contract award and award the contract to the next ranked bidder, subject to the bidder being qualified and with the prior authorization of the approvals authority.”

Members of the public may wish to note that a decision to award a contract does not constitute a contract and that the procuring entity may proceed to award the Contract to next ranked bidder where the recommended bidder fails to comply with an action required by the solicitation document.  This is provided for in Section 72 (3) of the Public Procurement Act 2020 and Regulation 180 (4).

Arising from this, on 2nd December, 2024, the Procurement Committee granted authority to engage the second best evaluated bidder. The Commission therefore wishes to notify the public that Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing of United Arab Emirates has been awarded the contract to print and deliver ballot papers and other election materials. The contract with Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing was signed on 10th January 2025.

2. Mass Registration of Voters

The Commission is pleased to announce that it will embark on a mass or countrywide voter registration exercise starting in the second quarter of 2025. This exercise forms part of the Commission’s ongoing commitment to ensuring an inclusive and comprehensive voter registration process aimed at empowering all eligible Zambians to participate in elections.

Building on the success of the Continuous Registration of Voters (CRV) initiative currently operational in 30 districts across the country, the nationwide registration will provide an opportunity for all eligible citizens to register as voters.

Additionally, those already on the Register of Voters will have a chance to update their details where necessary.

The mass or countrywide voter registration exercise will run for 60 days, after which the Commission will undertake a deduplication process to ensure the integrity of the Register of Voters. Following this, the provisional Register of Voters will be subjected to public inspection, allowing registered voters to verify their details and ensure the accuracy of the register.

To support this countrywide voter registration exercise, the Commission will implement a robust voter education and publicity campaign. This campaign will leverage various platforms, including mainstream and social media, to raise awareness and encourage maximum participation from the public.

We call upon you our colleagues from the media, political parties, civil society organizations, faith-based organisations and all stakeholders to play an active role in creating awareness and encourage eligible citizens to take advantage of this opportunity. The centres for Continuous Voter Registration remain open, and we urge eligible citizens to utilize this service.

The Certification of the Register of Voters for the 2026 General Election is scheduled for April 2026.
You may wish to note that the Commission is in the process of procuring key Voter Registration equipment and materials.

3. Regular Stakeholder Engagement and Updates
The Commission recognizes the critical role of stakeholders in the success of the electoral process. As we embark on the mass voter registration exercise scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2025, the Commission is committed to maintaining open and transparent communication with all stakeholders.

To this end, the Commission will continue to hold regular updates and stakeholder engagement meetings with various groups, including political parties, civil society organizations, faith-based organizations, the media, traditional leaders, and other key partners. These engagements will provide a platform for the exchange of ideas, updates on progress, and discussions on any emerging issues related to the voter registration process and the broader electoral cycle.

4. Update on by-elections
The Commission prescribed 6th February 2025 as the date for polls in the Pambashe Constituency in Kawambwa District of Luapula Province, Petauke Constituency in Petauke District of Eastern Province and two (2) wards namely Ntanda Ward of Mpongwe District in Copperbelt Province and Litawa Ward of Mongu District in Western Province.

I am happy to report that the Commission successfully conducted nominations on 7th January 2025. The nominations were followed by the development of the campaign timetables and stakeholder engagements with traditional leaders, women and youth. The Commission wishes to urge political parties and candidate+s to adhere to the Electoral Code of Conduct, and further encourage voters to turn out in numbers and exercise their right to vote.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Commission remains committed to promoting a collaborative and inclusive environment that strengthens the democratic and electoral process. We implore all stakeholders to actively participate in engagements with the Commission and support the electoral process.

Thank you for your attention and continued partnership. We now invite your questions and comments.

Thank you.

Official Resignation Statement by Mr Gibson Limbalambala, PF District Secretary in Livingstone

*Official Resignation Statement by Mr Gibson Limbalambala, PF District Secretary in Livingstone.*

On Monday, 13th January 2025.

Good morning, members of the press, colleagues, and fellow Zambians.

I stand before you today with a heavy yet resolute heart to announce my resignation as District Secretary of the Patriotic Front (PF) party in Livingstone, as well as my resignation from the party itself. This decision has not been made lightly. After wider consultations with my family, friends, and other stakeholders, I, Gibson Limbalambala, have decided to take political leave to focus on my personal business and dedicate more time to my family.

I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed party President and 6th Republican President His Excellency Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, for his exemplary leadership, vision, and commitment to the fight for freedom and concern for all the people of the party and Zambia. I also thank the few hardworking members of the Central Committee and all the well-wishers who tirelessly continue to uphold the party’s principles and fight for the freedoms and rights of all Zambians.

While this decision may disappoint some of my followers, I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience it may cause. I urge you to understand that this is a necessary step for me to realign my focus and priorities at this stage of my life.

To the Patriotic Front family, as I step away from both my position and the party, I want to express my heartfelt concerns and provide constructive advice. The growth and success of the Patriotic Front lie in reconnecting with the grassroots and embracing the values that our founding President, the late Michael Chilufya Sata, so strongly believed in. The late President Michael Sata MHSRIP always sang the song “Tutemwane,” which means “Let us love one another.” This call to love was the cornerstone of his leadership and the driving force behind his ability to unify the party and the nation at large.

Love must once again become the foundation of the Patriotic Front’s vision and operations. Without love, unity, and respect for one another, the party will remain stagnant and divided.

Key Areas of Reform for the Patriotic Front:

1. Grassroots Engagement: Actively involve women, youth, and grassroots members in decision-making and leadership. Listen to their voices and address their concerns just like a bemba proverb says “Amano mambulwa yafuma mwifwesa ya yamuculu” meaning wisdom can be gotten from anyone, it is shared not a monopoly of one person.

2. Unity of Purpose: Address the internal divisions and factionalism that are weakening the party’s ability to provide effective leadership and opposition. Let love and collaboration be the guiding principles.

3. Proactive Leadership: Focus on proactive strategies rather than reactive measures to address the challenges facing the party.

4. Direct Communication with Former President Dr ECL: Allow His Excellency Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu to hear directly from grassroots members instead of relying solely on a few individuals who surround him. I urge those MCC’s registering their faces to President ECL to go back to the grassroots and mobilise the party in their respective areas before the party becomes a skeleton without any parts. Always remember that “Ubukulu bwankonko masako” meaning it is the feather that makes a chicken big. Politically the strength of a political party is the grassroots.

Furthermore, I urge the leadership and members to desist from making false accusations against hardworking members simply because of the positions they hold. This culture of mistrust and baseless attacks only breeds division and stagnation. Unity, respect, and collaboration are essential to restoring the party’s strength and credibility.

To anyone I may have wronged during my time in the party, whether knowingly or unknowingly, I take this opportunity to extend my deepest apologies. I ask for your forgiveness and hope you find it in your hearts to understand that any such actions were never intentional.

To my colleagues in the Patriotic Front, I encourage you to reflect deeply on these issues and take bold steps to address them. The challenges facing our party are not insurmountable, but they require decisive leadership, honesty, and a genuine commitment to serve the people of Zambia.

As I step away, I leave with a deep sense of gratitude and pride for the moments we have shared, the battles we have fought, and the victories we have achieved together. I encourage you  to continue to work for the development of our beloved country, Zambia, with unwavering commitment and integrity.

Thank you all for your support, understanding, and encouragement throughout my political journey. God bless you all, and may God bless the Republic of Zambia.

Gibson Limbalambala
Former District Secretary
Former Member of the Patriotic Front Party.

TRIAL failed to take off yesterday at the Lusaka magistrate court in a matter, Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) president, Edith Nawakwi allegedly abducted and threatened to kill Pheluna and Milton Hatembo by chopping off their heads if they revealed what she had discussed with them.

When the matter came up for continuation of trial, the court heard that Nawakwi was unwell and admitted at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) hence unable to attend court proceedings.

And her lawyer, Tresford Chali informed resident magistrate, Amy Masoja that her client was unable to attend court because she was admitted over the weekend at Forest Park Specialized Hospital and later taken to UTH.

“Our instructions are that the accused is admitted in the University Teaching Hospital and therefore unable to be before this court this morning. Our further instructions are that she was admitted last night, having been earlier admitted at Forest Park over the weekend.”

“And that being the case, we were not able to get medical admittance report having been admitted yesterday. we shall endeavour to get the document from UTH,” Chali submitted.

The State reluctantly did not object to the application to have the matter adjourned.

South Korea says 300 North Korean soldiers killed, 2,700 wounded fighting Ukraine

Some 300 North Korean soldiers have been killed while fighting in Russia’s war against Ukraine, a South Korean legislator has said.

Added to the 300 deaths are about “2,700 injuries”, Lee Seong-kweun told reporters on Monday, after a briefing from Seoul’s National Intelligence Service (NIS).

“The deployment of North Korean troops to Russia has reportedly expanded to include the Kursk region, with estimates suggesting that casualties among North Korean forces have surpassed 3,000,” Lee said.

The NIS analysis also revealed that the North Korean soldiers have “a lack of understanding of modern warfare” and are being used by Russia in a manner leading to “the high number of casualties”, the legislator added.

The statement from the South Korean politician comes days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv had captured two North Korean soldiers, releasing a video of the injured fighters being interrogated.

Zelenskyy said Kyiv is “ready to hand over” the captured North Korean soldiers in exchange for Ukrainian prisoners of war held in Russia.

The Kremlin on Monday declined to comment on the reported capture of the North Korean soldiers.

“We cannot comment in any way, we do not know what is true there,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. “We continue to discuss the possibility of exchanges, which is not easy work … but for us the life of every Russian soldier is important,” he added.

Seoul has previously claimed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has sent more than 10,000 soldiers as “cannon fodder” to help Moscow fight Kyiv, in return for Russian technical assistance for Pyongyang’s heavily sanctioned weapons and satellite programmes.

Russia has neither confirmed nor denied their presence.

No desire to defect

The NIS said the two captured soldiers have not expressed a request to defect or resettle in South Korea, according to two legislators who attended Monday’s briefing.

The agency said it was willing to discuss the matter with Ukrainian authorities if the soldiers eventually do ask to go to South Korea.

About 34,000 North Koreans have defected to capitalist rival South Korea to avoid economic hardship and political suppression at home, mostly since the late 1990s.

Koo Byoungsam, spokesperson of South Korea’s Ministry of Unification that handles inter-Korean affairs, said facilitating the asylum of the North Korean soldiers would require “legal reviews, including on international law, and consultations with related nations”.

“There’s nothing we can say at the current stage,” Koo said.

Moreover, the soldiers, reportedly from North Korea’s elite Storm Corps, have been ordered to kill themselves rather than be taken prisoner, Lee said.

“Notably, memos found on deceased soldiers indicate that the North Korean authorities pressured them to commit suicide or self-detonate before capture,” he said.

He added that some of the soldiers had been granted “amnesty” or wanted to join North Korea’s governing Workers’ Party, hoping to improve their lot by fighting.

One North Korean soldier who was about to be captured shouted “General Kim Jong Un” and attempted to detonate a grenade, Lee said, adding that he was shot and killed.

Actor Sello Maake KaNcube refuses to give back ex-wife her clothes and underwear

In a dramatic turn of events, veteran South African actor Sello Maake kaNcube and his estranged wife, Pearl Mbewe, have found themselves in a heated dispute.

The drama unfolded when Maake kaNcube allegedly refused to return Mbewe’s personal belongings, including her clothes and underwear, after their separation. The incident took place at the actor’s home in Dube, Soweto, with Mbewe reportedly having to fight to retrieve items like her panties, shoes, and dresses.

According to reports, Maake kaNcube and Mbewe had turned several rooms in their shared home into workspaces for their individual projects. As their marriage crumbled, Mbewe tried to collect her belongings but was met with resistance from her former husband. She reached out to Maake kaNcube to inform him of her intentions, but he allegedly ignored her attempts, later claiming he wasn’t home when she reached out.

Things reportedly escalated when Maake kaNcube refused to grant Mbewe access to her possessions. Realizing she couldn’t handle the situation alone, Mbewe enlisted the help of friends and family to get her belongings back.

A source who witnessed the scene described the tense confrontation. Mbewe arrived at Maake kaNcube’s home with reinforcements, but the situation quickly turned chaotic. “When I heard him yelling, I knew something was wrong. There was a vehicle parked in the driveway, and furniture was being loaded onto it. Maake kaNcube was visibly agitated, shouting at the individuals assisting with the move,” the eyewitness shared.

In what appeared to be an emotional plea, Maake kaNcube allegedly told Mbewe that he still had feelings for her. However, Mbewe stood firm in her decision and reportedly dismissed his attempts, expressing her frustration. She made it clear that she was uninterested in his feelings.

Speaking to Sunday World, Mbewe shared her hopes for a peaceful resolution, saying, “I hope my estranged husband comes to his senses and returns all my belongings without me needing to involve the authorities.”
