We can’t overturn Chawama results, just seek legal redress, ECZ advises Muunda

THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has advised United Party for National Development (UPND) Chawama losing candidate Morgan Muunda to seek legal redress through the courts if he is dissatisfied with the outcome of the recently held Chawama parliamentary by-election.
ECZ says the commission has no legal authority to overturn election results once they have been officially declared, noting that any disputes arising from an election must be resolved using established legal channels.
Muunda lost the Chawama by-election to Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) candidate Bright Nundwe.
In a recent interview with News, ECZ spokesperson Patricia Luhanga said the commission conducted the by-election in line with the law and existing electoral procedures, adding that the role of ECZ ends once results are announced.
“Once election results are declared, the Electoral Commission cannot reverse or alter them.
Any aggrieved candidate is advised to seek redress through the courts as provided for by the law,” Luhanga said.
She explained that the electoral process provides room for candidates or political parties to challenge results they believe were affected by irregularities, but such matters fall under the jurisdiction of the judiciary and not the commission.
Muunda has publicly claimed that the election was not free and fair, arguing that some of his supporters were allegedly prevented from voting at one polling station during the by-election.
However, ECZ maintained that all polling stations that were scheduled to open did so, and that voting was conducted according to electoral guidelines.
The Chawama by-election was held following the nullification of the parliamentary seat, attracting several political parties and independent candidates.
Bright Nundwe of the FDD emerged winner after securing the highest number of votes, while Muunda came second.
ECZ has since reiterated its commitment to conducting transparent, credible and peaceful elections, and has urged all stakeholders to respect the law and democratic processes.

U.S. President Donald Trump has described Ethiopia’s $5-billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as “a big problem,” pledging to help resolve the long-running dispute between Ethiopia 🇪🇹 and Egypt 🇪🇬 over the project.

What is the 25th Amendment and why is it being mentioned?
The 25th Amendment allows for the removal of a sitting U.S. president if they are deemed unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office. Under Section 4 of the Amendment:
The Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet can declare the President unfit.
Power is then transferred to the Vice President.
If the President challenges the decision, Congress must vote.
A two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate is required to permanently remove the President.
This mechanism has never been fully used to remove a president, making Markey’s call extremely serious and unprecedented.
Who is supporting this move?
Several senior Democrats have backed Markey’s position, arguing that Trump’s recent behaviour shows:
Poor judgment in foreign policy.

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has issued a controversial directive banning opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, from further participation in Uganda’s electoral process, citing national security concerns.
Kainerugaba, who is also the eldest son of President Yoweri Museveni, made the declaration in a public statement attributed to him, asserting his authority as head of the armed forces.
Whether Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu is in the country or not I, as CDF, in the interests of national security and for the good of the commonwealth ban him from any further participation in the electoral exercises of Uganda,” he said on Thursday.
In the same statement, the army chief extended the directive beyond Bobi Wine himself, warning of consequences for individuals who publicly align with the opposition leader.
“From now on ANYONE who declares Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine as his/her political leader must be annulled.”
Kainerugaba further emphasized the binding nature of his directive, grounding it in his interpretation of executive authority.
“My orders stand with the force of the Commander-in-Chief of the State.”

“We have killed 22 NUP terrorists since last week. I’m praying the 23rd is Kabobi,” he wrote on his official X handle.
His comments amount to an open confirmation of the killing of opposition party members and come amid controversy surrounding the re-election of his 81-year-old father, President Museveni.
Museveni was declared winner of the disputed polls, securing a seventh term in office.
On Tuesday, Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine alleged that more than 100 of his supporters have been killed in recent days amid escalating political violence, accusing President Yoweri Museveni’s son and the military of carrying out deadly repression.
In a post on X on Monday, the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader said the killings had intensified over the past week, contradicting official figures he said were being publicly cited.
“Last night as Museveni’s son was making these threats to kill me and gloating over killing 22 of our supporters (in reality, he has killed over 100 since last week), the military who are stationed inside our compound yet again banged my house doors as they sang profanities, ordering the occupants to come out of the house if they’re men,” he posted on Tuesday .
Bobi Wine’s claim marks one of his strongest accusations yet, alleging a sharp rise in fatalities linked to security operations targeting opposition supporters. He did not provide names or locations of those allegedly killed but said the violence had coincided with increased military activity around his residence.
He further alleged that soldiers stationed at his home engaged in disorderly conduct and intimidation, raising concerns about the safety of those inside.
“The people at my home say the criminals seemed to be drunk.”
According to the opposition leader, the situation has left his family and associates trapped and vulnerable, with access to food deliberately blocked by security operatives. He said the military had taken control of his compound, replacing gate padlocks with chains.
“We demand that the military vacate our home immediately. My wife and people are not safe. They’re starving after these criminals blocked food from reaching them. They cut the padlocks of our gates and replaced them with chains. FREE UGANDA NOW.”
RUSSIA, UKRAINE AND US TO HOLD TRILATERAL TALKS IN ABU DHABI
RUSSIAN, Ukrainian and US negotiators will hold talks in the United Arab Emirates on Friday, in what officials say is the first meeting attended by all three countries since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion nearly four years ago.
The Kremlin confirmed Russian officials would attend the talks following a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and US envoys in Moscow.
Russia described those talks as “useful in every respect”, but said a long-term peace deal could not be reached until territorial issues had been resolved.
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised European allies for a lack of “political will” in taking action against Russia.
Present at the Thursday night meeting with Putin and two other Russian aides were three US representatives, including Steve Witkoff, and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the talks were “substantive, constructive and very frank”, but reiterated that any agreement for durable peace would not be possible without resolving territorial issues.
“Until this is achieved, Russia will continue to consistently pursue the objectives of the special military operation,” he said.
Ushakov added that Putin emphasised Russia was “sincerely interested” in a diplomatic solution.
“Without resolving the territorial issue according to the formula agreed upon in Anchorage, there is no hope of achieving a long-term settlement,” he said, a reference to the summit between Trump and Putin in Alaska last year.
Witkoff last year said that Russia had agreed to allow the US and Europe to give Ukraine “robust” security guarantees as part of a potential peace deal.
After meeting with Trump in Davos, Zelensky also made clear that the future status of territory in eastern Ukraine remained an unsolved issue ahead of talks in Abu Dhabi.
“It’s all about the land. This is the issue which is not solved yet,” Zelensky told reporters in Davos, adding that “the Russians have to be ready for compromises, not only Ukraine”.
The territorial sticking points include Russia’s demand that Ukraine give up the 25% of the Donetsk region that Kyiv still controls.
Zelensky joked in Davos that he hoped the UAE knew about the planned meeting on Friday, but in a measure of the seriousness of the talks he named some of his most senior officials as part of the Ukrainian negotiating team.
The head of the country’s national security and defence council, Rustem Umerov, was already talking to US officials in Davos, along with Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Zelensky’s office, and negotiator David Arakhamia. They will be joined in the UAE by the chief of the general staff, Andrii Hnatov.
On the Russian side, the delegation in Abu Dhabi will be led by General Igor Kostyukov, director of Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency, while investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev will meet with Witkoff separately to discuss economic issues.
Zelensky said last month that a 20-point US plan to end the war was 90% ready and that Ukraine’s position on Donbas, in eastern Ukraine, was different to Russia’s.
He has offered to withdraw troops by up to 40km (25 miles) from the region in order to create an economic zone in Donbas, if Russia does the same.
The US proposal for Ukraine’s industrial heartland in Donbas is for a demilitarised and free economic zone in exchange for security guarantees for Kyiv.
Zelensky also told reporters in Davos that he had reached an agreement with Trump on future US security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a deal.
He gave no details but said it would need to go before the US Congress and Ukrainian parliament before signing.
Zelensky had initially called off his trip to Davos in order to deal with the aftermath of Russian strikes on Kyiv’s power infrastructure, which have left large areas of the capital without heating, water or power during the harshest winter so far in almost four years of Russia’s full-scale war.
Another sticking point Zelensky has is future control of Ukraine’s enormous Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, seized by Russia in March 2022.
UGANDAN MP AND BOBI WINE ALLY ARRESTED OVER ELECTION VIOLENCE
UGANDAN police have detained a lawmaker, and close ally of opposition leader Bobi Wine, for his alleged role in election-related violence last week.
Muwanga Kivumbi, a deputy leader of Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP), is accused of organising attacks on a police station and a vote-tallying centre after their electoral loss, which the party denies.
The police have said that seven people were killed in the incident, but the politician has given a different account, saying that 10 people were killed at his home as they waited for parliamentary election results.
The Uganda Police Force said in a post on X on Thursday that Kivumbi would be “arraigned before court in due course”.
“His arrest is in connection with recent incidents of political violence,” it added.
Kivumbi’s arrest follows tensions after last week’s elections in which President Yoweri Museveni was re-elected for a seventh term.
During his victory speech over the weekend, Museveni warned opposition figures including Kivumbi of coordinated plans to attack polling stations.
He said seven people were shot dead by police after groups of alleged opposition supporters, armed with machetes, attempted to carry out violent attacks in Butambala district outside the capital, Kampala.
Wine, Museveni’s closest challenger and who is in hiding after fleeing a raid on his house after the elections, has denounced the results as “fake”, citing electoral fraud.
He has also alleged that there was “silent massacre” under way and a crackdown targeting political activists.
On Tuesday, he posted on social media that more than 100 people had been killed in election violence, without stating evidence.
This came after Uganda’s army chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also Museveni’s son and his potential successor, said the security forces had killed 22 opposition supporters during poll-related violence.
Since the election, Ugandan authorities have reportedly arrested dozens of youths on various charges linked to election-related incidents in Kampala.
Museveni first came to power as a rebel leader in 1986. He will have served for 45 years when the next term ends in 2031.
Uganda has not witnessed a peaceful transfer of presidential power since independence.

iShowSpeed has fired back at critics accusing him of being disrespectful for failing to collaborate with fellow content creators during his Africa tour — insisting the trip was never about influencer link-ups.

Police in Northern Province announced the death of Bernadette Mwamba, 58, wife of Paramount Chief Chitimukulu Kanyanta Manga the Second who died after being involved in a fatal Road Traffic Accident.
Disclosing the sad development yesterday, Wednesday (21st January 2026) morning to Lutanda Catholic Radio News, Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Lucky Buumba Munkondya says on Tuesday 20th January 2026 at around 17:20 hours, Mungwi Traffic Division recorded a Fatal road traffic accident which occurred near Kacholi farms about 45 Kilometres from Mungwi Town along Malole – Chitimukulu Road.
Commissioner Munkondya said Involved was a Motor vehicle Toyota Corolla of registration number BAA 5766 which incurred extensively damaged adding that same vehicle was being driven from south to North direction by Female Bernadette Mwamba aged 58 who happens to be the wife to His Royal Highness Chief Chitimukulu.
Ms. Munkondya further adds that the wife to Mwinelubemba Kanyanta Manga the Second sustained head injuries and died in Kasama General Hospital at 21:45 hours.
Northern Province Police Boss also disclosed that the late Mama Bernadette Mwamba had two (2) Passengers on board namely Bertha Bwalya aged 52 who complained of painful chest, a cut on the head and general body pains and Lilian Chanda 52 both of Chitimukulu area of Mungwi District who sustained a bruise on the fore head and complained of painful arms and chest.
She stated that the accident happened when the said driver lost control of her vehicle due to excessive speed, career off the road and hit into a tree and overturned on the left side of the road.
Commissioner Munkondya also said the deceased body is lying in Kasama General Hospital Mortuary awaiting Postmortem examinations while the alive casualties are admitted to the same Hospital adding that the vehicle is still at the scene and arrangements are being made to bring it to the police station , Investigations are underway.

Dr. Lubinda Habazooka has condemned illegal miners stating that their activities deprive the Treasury of income in taxes.
I wish he could express similar outrage to a government that gives mine houses tax holidays, tax exemption and especially a government that allows export of copper as ore or as concentrates – duty free.
Exporting copper ore and copper concentrates ( in this case even without export duty) when the country has sufficient processing and smelting caoacity is deliberate theft of fair taxes as products such as gold, silver, and cobalt may not be visible at this strage.
It’s also part of a sophisticated mechanism to distort quarterly and annual eligible income available for taxes.
You expect people like Dr. Habazooka to spend time exposing such tax dodging, and such tax cheating mechanisms so that government can be compelled to act fairly.

WEZI KAUNDA WAS NOT JUST A MAN — HE WAS CONTINUITY Wezi Kaunda carried something no police docket could erase: political inheritance. He was young, disciplined, and increasingly active in UNIP at a time when Chiluba’s government was tightening its grip on institutions. As the third-term debate loomed, figures who could mobilise resistance — especially those bearing historic legitimacy — became intolerable.
A third term does not coexist with strong opposition. It demands obedience or absence.
THE NIGHT HE WAS SHOT WAS NOT CHAOS — IT WAS ORDER On 3 November 1999, Wezi Kaunda returned home. The gunmen were already there. They did not wander. They did not guess. They waited.
He and his wife, Didre, were driving home to a suburb of Lusaka in his Toyota Landcruiser when they were approached by a group of armed men, at the hate of his house. According to Didre, Kaunda told the gang:
‘I am Major Wezi Kaunda. Please take my car, take whatever you want. I am not resisting. Spare my life and my wife. Just take the car.’
The gang replied: ‘We know who you are. Do you think we don’t know? Shoot him.’
The men ordered Kaunda out of the car and shot him in the stomach, back and shoulder. He was rushed to hospital, where he died a few hours later. The car was found abandoned, but nothing had been stolen.
His wife survived. No valuables were taken. This was not panic. This was not hunger. This was not crime spiralling out of control.
This was selection.
The state later asked the nation to believe that common criminals executed the son of a former president at his gate and forgot to rob him. That explanation collapses under its own absurdity.
THE THIRD TERM CONTEXT MAKES THE LIE UNWORKABLE By 1999, Chiluba’s third-term ambition was generating resistance within civil society, churches, the legal fraternity, and opposition parties. UNIP, despite years of harassment, still mattered. Kenneth Kaunda still mattered. His voice still carried moral weight.
Wezi Kaunda’s existence guaranteed that his father’s political shadow would not fade. His death removed that guarantee.
When power seeks extension beyond constitutional limits, it does not tolerate symbols. It erases them.
THE STATE’S RESPONSE WAS NOT JUST FAST — IT WAS DEFENSIVE The police raced to reduce the killing to aggravated robbery. Suspects were paraded. Confessions were announced. Courts convicted. The political temperature was lowered by force of narrative.
There was no appetite for independent inquiry because independence is dangerous when truth is destabilising. The question was never who pulled the trigger. The question was who benefitted from the silence that followed.
The third-term project did not need public controversy. It needed calm. Wezi Kaunda’s death was neutralised as an issue before it could ignite.
CONFESSIONS WERE PRODUCED, BUT CLARITY NEVER WAS A confession is the easiest thing to manufacture in a frightened system. What was never produced was motive that made sense. Why Wezi? Why his home? Why no theft? Why no political interrogation? Why did Kenneth Kaunda himself reject the robbery explanation?
Those questions were treated as subversive, because during a third-term push, even questions become enemies.
WHAT HIS DEATH ACCOMPLISHED SPEAKS LOUDER THAN ANY VERDICT After Wezi Kaunda was killed, fear thickened. Opposition energy fractured. The political environment became quieter, more cautious, more obedient. The third-term debate advanced in a country already conditioned to understand the cost of resistance.
That is how power disciplines without issuing orders.
CONCLUSION: THE THIRD TERM CAST A LONG SHADOW
Wezi Kaunda was killed before Chiluba formally launched his third-term bid, but not before the machinery of that ambition was already in motion. His death must be read inside that context, not outside it.

The Bemba Royal Establishment has barred political party regalia at the burial of Bernadette Mwamba, wife to Paramount Chief Chitimukulu, who died earlier this week following a road traffic accident in Mungwi District.
Royal spokesperson Richard Mukuka said the burial will take place on Friday at Chimuna graveyard at the Chitimukulu Royal Village, with a requiem mass scheduled at Chitimukulu Catholic Church. He emphasised that political attire will not be permitted at the ceremony.

In Lusaka, DEC also apprehended a suspect linked to a transnational drug trafficking syndicate involving cannabis transported from South Africa.
All suspects remain in lawful custody awaiting court appearances.

Although she agreed to the meeting, Nthabiseng says she felt uneasy from the start. The overlap between a dating platform and a supposed job opportunity made her uncomfortable, and she describes this as the first red flag.
In an attempt to protect herself, she told Ivo that she would prefer to attend the meeting with a friend to see how he would respond. Nthabiseng alleges that while he said bringing a friend would not be a problem, he added a concerning remark: if the producers happened to like the friend more, Nthabiseng could lose the job to her. Feeling pressured and afraid of missing the opportunity, she ultimately decided to go alone.
Despite going by herself, Nthabiseng says she took precautions. She shared her live location with people close to her so they could track her movement in case something went wrong.
Another detail that heightened her suspicion was that an Uber was paid for her, transporting her all the way from Mpumalanga to Sandton—something she found excessive and unusual for a simple interview.
Nthabiseng further claims that what is shown in the final video does not reflect the full experience. She alleges that upon arrival, she was offered snacks, wine, and treats, which she now believes may have been drugged.

In a statement, Steers said an internal investigation revealed that the instruction came from a restaurant manager, who asked staff to remove excessive weed growth due to delayed maintenance by the landlord following the December festive period.
While the company acknowledged the importance of maintaining a clean exterior, it stressed that such work should never be carried out by team members.
