A GOOD LEADER WILL EMERGE FROM THE PF CHAOS – SP

A GOOD LEADER WILL EMERGE FROM THE PF CHAOS – SP

SOCIALIST Party National Youth Chairperson Kelvin Kaunda says the Patriotic Front will come up with a good leader amidst the chaos it is currently facing.

In an interview, Monday, Kaunda said good leaders usually emerge from chaotic environments.

“Good leaders are made in a chaotic environment. The environment may be said to be chaotic, but it’s also a very good recipe to give us a good leader. Leaders emerge under a chaotic environment; that’s where true and perfect leaders emerge from. And these tend to be good leaders”.

“When you come up with a leader under a chaotic environment, you just know that such a leader is capable of overcoming any storm or any challenge, because it’s only the storm waters which can provide or which can give you a good sailor or a captain. A good captain is only seen when there is a storm. A good pilot is only seen amidst turbulence. Yes, the opposition and the biggest opposition party right now is entangled in all sorts of issues,” Kaunda said.

“Look at [Paul] Kagame, was he born out of a smooth transition process? No. The list is endless in the formation of those who have given us good leaders. They say, we are born out of a chaotic environment. And we have no doubt in our mind that the PF equally, amidst what is perceived to be a chaotic environment, will give a good leader who should be able to give them a clear sense of direction. We still have hope as Socialists that amidst this chaotic environment, a good leader will emerge to provide a sense of direction, and the environment is ripe to give us a good leader”.

He added that he was happy that the PF was finally confronting its leadership issues, insisting that the opposition would unite.

“Away from SP, personally, I’m happy that they are beginning to confront the issue of leadership with honesty. Because I think we are seeing what we are seeing now because this is when the subject of leadership is being addressed by the PF. All this time, it was about the funeral: ‘let’s wait, we bury.’ I think now our colleagues have realised that look, it is time that they dealt with the issues of leadership”.

“And now that they are confronting the issues of leadership, that’s why we are seeing all these ripple effects. But that does not mean the opposition will not unite. No, we are going to unite. That message is very clear. Whether the PF elects a leader today or next month or the other month, the truth of the matter is that the opposition will unite. Even if they elect leaders or do it before the election, we are still going to unite,” Kaunda said.

Asked about time as 2026 was fast approaching, Kaunda said in politics even 24 hours was a lot of time.

“In politics, even 24 hours is a lot of time. That’s the beauty about politics. We are not dealing with the construction of capital projects where even if you have a lot of money, it is difficult for you to deliver within the shortest possible time. No. We are dealing with the construction of leadership, we are dealing with governance issues, we are dealing with national leadership. So when it comes to leadership, even 24 hours is a lot of time. And that I can assure you. Look, we have something to refer to. When you look at the 1991 general election, there was no MMD as of December 1990. Ten months into the election, the MMD was registered by December, January, by March, it had gained momentum by October, and it scooped the 1991 election,” Kaunda said.

He insisted that the biggest opposition the UPND faced was the people, not any political party.

“So I keep on saying that the greatest opposition the UPND have is not even the PF, is not even the Socialists, is not even the NCP, and is not even NAREP or any other political party. No, the greatest opposition they have are the Zambian people. So what is going on in the PF is healthy; it’s nothing strange. It’s healthy, and we have no doubt in our mind that the waters will settle down very soon. It’s not the confusion that will enable the ruling party to win an election. It’s them having to deliver on their promises that will make them win. So, if they are lying to themselves that they stand to benefit from the confusion in the PF, they are mistaken,” said Kaunda.

“What the people of Zambia will be judging them against is on their own promises: Have they delivered? Is it a yes or no? That’s what will make them either retain their seat or lose their seat, because many people resolved as to who they will take out, they are just looking at, ‘who is the opposition going to give us?’ That’s what they are waiting for. Who to vote out of power, they are already resolved; who to usher in is what is now being considered. And that’s why I’m saying this perceived confusion in the PF, very soon and in no time, it’s going to settle down”.

“MWALITETA EXPOSES PF’S TRIBAL AGENDA, URGES UNITY AHEAD OF 2026 ELECTIONS”

“MWALITETA EXPOSES PF’S TRIBAL AGENDA, URGES UNITY AHEAD OF 2026 ELECTIONS”

Lusaka
United Party for National Development (UPND) Lusaka Provincial Chairperson, Hon. Obvious Mwaliteta, has publicly criticized the Patriotic Front (PF), accusing the former ruling party of fostering corruption, tribalism, and political manipulation.

Addressing the media at the UPND Lusaka Provincial Office, Hon. Mwaliteta condemned efforts by PF operatives to divide Zambians along tribal lines for political gain.

“PF’s agenda is to manipulate innocent tribes to serve their ambitions. But Easterners, Bembas, and all Zambians are equal. We will not fall into their trap,” Mwaliteta asserted.

He further denounced certain religious figures allegedly being used to spread discord, emphasizing that Zambia’s 73 tribes must remain united under one nation.

Hon. Mwaliteta highlighted the UPND’s commitment to national unity, peace and development, praising the administration of President Hakainde Hichilema  for its preparedness and stability.

“HH prepared thoroughly for this country. Today, Zambians enjoy peace, infrastructure development, and social welfare initiatives that were absent under PF. Attempts to create confusion will not succeed,” he said.

The briefing also showcased provincial development initiatives, youth employment projects, and the party’s readiness to contest and win in the 2026 general elections.

Hon. Mwaliteta concluded by urging Zambians to remain vigilant against political manipulation and to support policies that strengthen national unity and progress.

When Conscience Enters The Chamber: Ten Questions For A New Republic

When Conscience Enters The Chamber: Ten Questions For A New Republic

By Dr Mwelwa

Every member of the National Assembly must confront the ten questions posed by State Counsel John Sangwa. These are not questions for one man or one party—they are questions for every lawmaker entrusted with shaping Zambia’s destiny through truth, courage, and duty.

Are we, as a nation, ready to face the scale of our crisis? In Parliament, this means acknowledging the rot of corruption, inefficiency, and self-interest that has eroded the people’s trust. Renewal begins when truth replaces denial, and accountability replaces comfort.

Discipline and sacrifice are not mere words for campaign slogans. They are the soul of service. Our MPs must reject the temptations of bribery, patronage, and luxury. Leadership is not eating with the powerful—it is fasting for the powerless.

Unity must return to the heart of national politics. Parliament cannot be a battlefield of tribes or factions; it must be the meeting place of patriots. To heal Zambia, MPs must think as Zambians first and as politicians last.

The truth is painful but necessary. Parliament must stop hiding behind excuses. Every minister, every committee, every MP must confront the failures in governance, the collapsed industries, the hunger in our compounds, and the despair in our youth.

Accountability is shared. The failure of the Executive is the failure of Parliament to oversee it. MPs must remember that they are not assistants to the President—they are guardians of the people’s power. Oversight is not rebellion; it is duty.

In 2026, the ballot must no longer reward tribe or money. The Parliament we want will not be built by loyalists but by thinkers—men and women who fear betraying the Constitution more than losing an election. Integrity must return to politics.

The Constitution is not a suggestion—it is the covenant of our Republic. MPs must read it, defend it, and legislate by it. Every vote cast in the House must honor Article 43: loyalty to God, the Constitution, and the people.

Equality before the law must be real, not rhetorical. Parliament must ensure that justice is blind to power and wealth. No president, minister, or businessman should stand above the law, and no citizen should fall beneath its protection.

Zambia must learn to live within its means. Parliament must interrogate every loan, every concession, and every inflated contract. A poor country cannot afford expensive mistakes. Economic patriotism begins with budget discipline and honest stewardship.

True sovereignty means financing our own democracy. Parliament must end the culture of foreign dependence and corrupt campaign funding. The people’s representatives must rise to defend Zambia’s dignity by ensuring that no external hand writes our future.

If our MPs can answer these ten questions through action, Zambia will be reborn. The Parliament we want will not be a chamber of silence but a temple of conscience—a place where the voice of the people rises above the noise of politics.

John Sangwa has spoken to the heart of the nation. The renewal he calls for will not begin in rallies or speeches—it begins on the floor of Parliament, when leaders decide that truth, justice, and discipline shall once again govern this Republic.

VEEP KU WIRE? Why President Hichilema’s Decision to Send Haimbe to COMESA Summit Makes Strategic Sense

VEEP KU WIRE? Why President Hichilema’s Decision to Send Haimbe to COMESA Summit Makes Strategic Sense

By The Zambian Angle | October 7, 2025

As Zambia prepares to participate in the 24th COMESA Summit in Nairobi, some voices on social media have questioned why President Hakainde Hichilema chose to delegate Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe instead of Vice President Mutale Nalumango. But a closer look at the nature of this summit and Zambia’s current diplomatic priorities shows that this decision is not sidelining—it is strategy.

The COMESA Summit, themed “Leveraging digitalisation to deepen regional value chains for sustainable and inclusive growth,” focuses heavily on trade, investment, and regional cooperation. These are core areas under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, which coordinates Zambia’s engagements with regional blocs and foreign governments.

In regional and global practice, it is normal for presidents to assign ministers to represent them depending on the agenda. For instance, during last year’s African Union Industrialization Summit, several presidents sent their trade or foreign ministers instead of vice presidents. Similarly, in 2023, Tanzania’s president sent her foreign affairs minister to represent the country at the SADC extraordinary summit.

In Zambia’s case, President Hichilema has consistently emphasized a foreign policy rooted in economic diplomacy. Under this policy, diplomats and foreign affairs officials are expected to pursue opportunities that open markets, attract investment, and support national development goals. Minister Haimbe’s attendance at COMESA fits neatly into this agenda.

The Vice President’s role, by contrast, is largely domestic and administrative—managing parliamentary business, disaster response, and coordination of internal government functions. Her presence is crucial at home, especially when Cabinet or parliamentary sessions are underway. Sending the Foreign Affairs Minister to a summit centred on trade, digitalisation, and regional security is therefore not a demotion of her position, but rather a clear alignment of expertise to the task.

Furthermore, Zambia’s increasing visibility in regional affairs requires continuity and focus in diplomacy. In recent months, Minister Haimbe has represented the country in key discussions with COMESA, SADC, and the African Union. He has also been involved in pushing for Zambia’s leadership in peace and security matters across the Great Lakes Region. Such consistent engagement builds trust among partner states, making his participation at this summit both practical and beneficial for Zambia.

The theme of this year’s summit—digitalisation—also connects strongly with Zambia’s current economic reform path. The government has been pushing digital transformation across ministries, from online passport applications to the Zambia Integrated Land Management Information System (ZILMIS) and e-government services. By sending a foreign affairs minister who is also a lawyer and an advocate for technological integration in governance, President Hichilema is positioning Zambia as a serious player in the digital economy conversation.

In essence, this is not about preference or personality—it is about precision. Zambia gains more when each national leader functions within their best area of competence. President Hichilema’s decision reflects confidence in his team and a mature understanding of modern diplomacy, where representation depends on expertise, not rank.

As the COMESA Summit deliberates on how digital tools can boost regional trade and cooperation, Zambia’s delegation, led by Minister Haimbe, will carry not only the President’s message but also the country’s broader ambition to become a digitally driven economy at the centre of regional transformation.

That is not sidelining. That is strategic leadership.

ZAMBIA MUST NEVER WALK THE RWANDAN PATH — TRIBAL POLITICS HAVE NO PLACE IN OUR DEMOCRACY

ZAMBIA MUST NEVER WALK THE RWANDAN PATH — TRIBAL POLITICS HAVE NO PLACE IN OUR DEMOCRACY

By Chilufya Kasonde

Zambia’s peace and unity have always been the envy of many African nations — a shining example of how diversity can coexist under one flag. But recent tribal remarks by some politicians, including former Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri, have sparked widespread condemnation and reignited the debate about the dangers of tribal politics in the country.

Mumbi Phiri’s recent comments, viewed by many as divisive and reckless, have been interpreted as a desperate attempt to resuscitate her political relevance by playing the tribal card. Yet, this kind of rhetoric is not only outdated — it is toxic and dangerous. It undermines decades of national unity painstakingly built by the founding fathers under the enduring motto: “One Zambia, One Nation.”

Across the country, citizens are demanding firm action against politicians who promote ethnic division for personal or partisan gain. Zambians are rightly asking: why should anyone be allowed to insult the unity that has kept our nation peaceful for 60 years?

The calls are growing for law enforcement agencies to take decisive steps. Many believe that politicians who advocate for tribalism should be arrested and their parties deregistered. The logic is simple — tribal politics are not just divisive; they are a threat to national security.

History offers a grim warning. The 1994 Rwandan Genocide, which claimed more than 800,000 lives, began with the same kind of hate speech and tribal incitement we are now hearing from some quarters. What started as “mere talk” in Rwanda quickly escalated into one of the darkest chapters in human history. Zambia cannot — and must not — allow such seeds of hatred to take root here.

Our country has thrived because of unity. From the early days of Dr. Kenneth Kaunda’s leadership, Zambians learned that no tribe is superior to another, and that our differences are a source of strength, not division. Politicians who forget this lesson must be reminded, forcefully if necessary, that tribalism is not freedom of expression — it is incitement to disunity.

As Zambia approaches the 2026 General Elections, citizens must remain vigilant and reject any leader who seeks to divide them along tribal lines. Leadership should be earned through ideas, integrity, and service — not through the manipulation of ethnic identities.

It is time for institutions such as the Electoral Commission of Zambia, the Human Rights Commission, and law enforcement agencies to work together to ensure that those who promote tribal hatred face consequences. The country’s stability and unity must be protected at all costs.

Zambia must never walk the Rwandan path. The peace we enjoy today is fragile — and it will only endure if we collectively reject tribal politics and those who thrive on it.

One Zambia, One Nation — forever.

ZAMBIA POLICE WARN AGAINST INCITEMENT FOLLOWING FACEBOOK POST ALLEGEDLY LINKED TO PF

ZAMBIA POLICE WARN AGAINST INCITEMENT FOLLOWING FACEBOOK POST ALLEGEDLY LINKED TO PF

The Zambia Police Service has issued a stern warning to individuals behind a Facebook post allegedly linked to the Patriotic Front (PF), which calls for countrywide demonstrations beginning at the residence of Robert Chabinga.

The post, titled “PF to begin countrywide demonstrations until State gives back PF. Demo starting at Robert Chabinga’s house,” has raised serious concerns within law enforcement circles.

According to the Inspector General of Police, the page has repeatedly published content that borders on incitement to lawlessness and public disorder.

“We are closely monitoring this page, its administrators, and all individuals involved in creating, sharing, and amplifying messages intended to provoke unrest,” the Inspector General stated. “Any attempt to organise or incite unlawful demonstrations, intimidate individuals, or cause chaos will be treated as a serious criminal matter.”

While reaffirming the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, the police emphasized that such rights must be exercised within the bounds of the law. The Inspector General warned that any actions aimed at undermining public order would be met with firm and decisive law enforcement.

Commanding Officers across the country have been directed to remain on high alert and engage in proactive, intelligence-led policing. Units are expected to respond swiftly to any threats to public peace and ensure the safety of law-abiding citizens.

The public has been urged to remain calm, avoid sharing unverified or inflammatory information online, and report any suspicious activities or plans for unlawful gatherings to the nearest police station.

This development comes amid heightened political tensions, with authorities reiterating their commitment to maintaining law and order across the nation.

When Justice Starts to Pick Sides …15 Months and Still No Bail pending appeal- Mulundika Mukelebai

Mulundika Mukelebai writes:::::

When Justice Starts to Pick Sides

…15 Months and Still No Bail pending appeal…

Today, I want to revisit a case that many have chosen to forget a case that still echoes through the hearts of those who believe in fairness the case of Ronald Kaoma Chitotela. When you take a moment to look back and truly examine this sad chapter, you will agree with me that while justice is said to be blind, in today’s Zambia, it seems to open its eyes only to politics.

Who is Ronald Kaoma Chitotela? Many of you know him the former Pambashe Member of Parliament, a man once trusted with national responsibility. Yet today, he sits behind bars, serving 10 years in prison for arson. Yes, arson. And that’s what shocks everyone who has followed this case closely.

Out of more the all witnesses including state witnesses, only one a member of the you know party claimed to have seen him at the scene. Every other witness, from both sides, testified that Chitotela was nowhere near Kawambwa on the day of the alleged incident. He was miles away, in Lusaka.

And that one witness? When cross-examined, she told the court she was standing near a school when she supposedly saw Chitotela. But those who know Kawambwa will tell you the nearest school is over 8 kilometres away from the scene of the fire. How did she identify him from that distance? Perhaps she had binoculars like the ones PF Secretary General Nakachinda was once teased for carrying around! Yet, from that single, shaky testimony, the court built a wall of guilt around him.

And so, today, Ronald Kaoma Chitotela sits in Mukobeko Maximum Prison, paying the price for a crime he has always denied a crime that many believe was politically scripted rather than proven.

Every single application for bail pending appeal has been denied. Every plea for fairness has been silenced. Meanwhile, a daughter of a prominent senior ruling party official, arrested for murder, had her charge reduced to manslaughter and was granted bail immediately.

Two citizens. One justice system. Yet two worlds apart.

No one knows what tomorrow holds for Chitotela, but one thing remains certain when justice starts choosing sides, it ceases to be justice at all.

And just as the sun hardens the clay so Does it melts the ice.

 One day, justice will prevail.

Family left homeless after son sells mother’s house to fund gambling addiction

Family left homeless after son sells mother’s house to fund gambling addiction

A 57-year-old widow from Kgapane Township, Limpopo, has been left homeless after her 34-year-old son allegedly forged her signature and sold their family home to fund his gambling addiction.

Sarah Mokumo, a mother of three, claims that her son received a R180,000 down payment from a buyer who was aware she was the rightful owner of the property.

The fraudulent sale came to light only after eviction notices were issued, forcing Mokumo out of her home.

She and her 17-year-old son are currently stranded on the streets with their belongings in Kgapane Township .

The incident has outraged the community, with residents calling for justice and intervention to help Mokumo reclaim her house.

Local authorities have been alerted to the situation, but as of now, no official statements have been made regarding potential legal actions or support for the family.

ZAMBIA NOT A FAILED STATE – KABUSWE

ZAMBIA NOT A FAILED STATE – KABUSWE

IT is reckless and irresponsible for John Sangwa to characterise Zambia as a failed State because the country’s governance outlook has greatly improved under President Hakainde Hichilema, Paul Kabuswe has said.

And Mr Kabuswe has projected that President Hichilema is destined for a landslide victory in the 2026 general election because the head of State have achieved remarkable results in the four years he has been in power to the extent that Zambians have no reason to experiment and change leadership.

Mr Kabuswe, the Mines and Mineral Development Minister has since debunked claims by new presidential aspirant State Counsel John Sangwa that Zambia was sliding into a failed state, stating that Zambia’s constitutional lawyer was misleading the nation.

Speaking in an interview, Mr Kabuswe dismissed Mr Sangwa’s assertions and questioned the basis of his argument when Zambia’s record on governance was a reflection of a nation that respected the rule of law and the expansion of democracy.

“Sangwa is saying Zambia is a failed state. First and foremost, I don’t know what kind of a lawyer he is. How can Zambia be sliding into a failed state when its economy is growing? How is a failed state showing positive growth?” Mr Kabuswe asked.

He accused Mr Sangwa SC of applying academic thinking to the country’s politics governance, stating that such kind of analysis was not only politically jaundiced but inappropriate.

“The problem he wants to bring academic thinking into the running of a country. Zambia is not sliding into a failed state. Zambia is intact. It will never be a failed state under UPND and President Hichilema,” Mr Kabuswe said.

The minister pointed to what he described as improvements in governance and international relations which he said had improved Zambia’s outlook to the international community.

“When you look where we are coming from and where we are going, even in terms of governance, even international agencies have rated us to be the best in terms of democratic space. That is why he is able to talk anyhow and say what he wants,” he said, adding that the political climate today allowed freer speech than in previous regimes.

“If it was in the previous regime, he would have been followed and told all sorts of things and insulted. But here he is, he is talking freely, he has declared to be president. He is welcome to the battlefield. He is welcome to the ground,” Mr Kabuswe said.

He rejected accusations of factionalism and repeated his assertion that the economy was improving under the ruling party.

“But Zambia is not sliding into a failed state. The economy is improving, so many things that we have done as UPND. The economy is growing. He (Mr Sangwa) is a very misguided politician. He doesn’t understand. He has been a lawyer and doing all academics. Let him come into politics and understand how countries are run, not the way he is thinking. His thinking is queer. There is no cadreism. That is not a failed state,” Mr Kabuswe said.

He praised President Hichilema’s leadership and predicted a strong showing in 2026.

“Let’s applaud what President Hakainde Hichilema has done. President Hichilema will bounce back in 2026 because he is not only a handsome man but he has delivered. In fact he has raised the bar so high such that the bar is so high,” Mr Kabuswe said.

Public Office & Presidential Instructions

Public Office & Presidential Instructions
By Dickson Jere

Public office – especially senior position – is becoming more and more dangerous. The aftermath is not guaranteed especially that decisions of public office require personal judgment and discretion in most cases. Simply, it is easy to “catch” any senior civil servant after office for abuse of abuse or neglect in duty.

It is public officers who carry out the political instructions and often under verbal instructions or scribbled notes on those coloured little pads. It is tough to be Director, Permanent Secretary or Secretary to Treasury. One must know how to balance political instructions and job responsibilities above politics. Many have been arrested or jailed after office.

This is why in 2016, when we amended the Constitution, we tried to protect the civil servants and the President under Article 93(1).
This provision reads; “A decision or instruction of the President SHALL be in writing under the President’s signature”

The rationale is that no civil servant should ever carry out instructions of the President or his superiors which are not written. Conversely, it was also aimed at protecting the President from those who may use his name, authority or power without his consent.

But how practical is this constitution provision?

Having worked closely with a President, I can attest that such a requirement can ground the operation of government. Presidents give directive either through aides verbally – most of them time – or telephone calls.

You cannot have the President writing letters on each and every decision or instruction made. This provision actually demands that the President should personally sign the letter of his decision or instructions. But then, can a Director, DC or PS refuse to take instructions of the President because they were not in written form? Food for thought.

Anyway, we have had arrests after arrests after top officials leave office. Look at what happened to former Secretary to Treasury Prof Mweene after 2001 polls. What about James Mtonga, Stella Chibanda and Bede Mpande. Excellent civil servants that got caught up in the politics. The trend has continued after change of government or presidency.

We need to find solution to this scourge. Every senior civil servant is a potential jailbird after losing office in Zambia. How can they be protected from politicians? Maybe we should get back to the old UNIP system of career civil servants – those picked and promoted on career lines than political expediency. Will that help?

MARIA ZALOUMIS ESCAPES THE JAWS OF JUSTICE, COURTESY OF A CONTROLLED JUDICIARY- Prof. Proud Moonga, PhD

*MARIA ZALOUMIS ESCAPES THE JAWS OF JUSTICE, COURTESY OF A CONTROLLED JUDICIARY*

By Prof. Proud Moonga, PhD | Lecturer, University of Michigan, USA | Good Governance Activist

Zambia’s justice system is under serious scrutiny. The growing perception among citizens, especially those from the Eastern and Northern (Bemba) regions, is that the judiciary no longer stands as an impartial guardian of the law but has become a weapon of selective justice. Meanwhile, those from the Zambezi region appear to enjoy a softer, more protective judicial hand. If not urgently addressed, this dangerous imbalance risks tearing apart the very fabric of our democracy.

Today, two sharply contrasting court outcomes have shaken public confidence. In Kabwe, a magistrate granted bail to murder-accused businesswoman Maria Zaloumis, her husband, and two of her employees, all from the Zambezi region. Yet, on the very same day in Lusaka, another magistrate sentenced Kingsley Chanda and Kaoma, both from the Eastern region, to six years’ imprisonment with hard labour for merely failing to follow laid-down procedure in the disposal of government vehicles.

Let that sink in: those accused of taking human life are treated leniently, while those accused of administrative errors are condemned to prison. Such contradictions make it impossible for citizens to believe in the fairness and consistency of our justice system. When people begin to see that judicial outcomes depend not on law or evidence, but on where one comes from or who one is aligned with politically, the rule of law collapses.

Let it be clear: this is not a defence of wrongdoing. Wrongdoers must face justice, but justice must be equal. What is happening in Zambia today is not equality before the law. It is regional bias, dressed up as judicial discretion. It breeds anger, resentment, and division. It turns the courts—once proud pillars of fairness—into instruments of political and regional persecution.

This pattern has become too obvious to ignore. Individuals such as Munir Zulu, Bowman Lusambo, Nickson Chilangwa, Maureen Mabonga, Ronald Chitotela, Charity Katanga, Wanziya Chirwa, Charles Mushota, Fredson Yamba, Wilson Lungu, and Given Katuta Mwelwa, all from the Eastern and Northern regions, have faced harsh rulings or prolonged detentions. Meanwhile, others from the Zambezi region, even when accused of graver crimes, continue to receive leniency, bail, or outright protection. The imbalance is glaring. The people see it. And they are talking about it.

This is no longer a coincidence. It is a pattern. And patterns, when repeated in a democracy, become systems of control. Easterners and Bembas must stop fighting each other and recognise that they face a shared injustice, a coordinated marginalisation that weakens their regions and divides the nation. The real issue is not tribe but power and control. Unity, vigilance, and collective action are now essential if Zambia is to reclaim an independent judiciary and restore public faith in justice.

A controlled judiciary is more dangerous than open dictatorship. It operates under the cover of legality while silently destroying freedom. When people lose faith in the courts, the Republic begins to rot from within.

Justice must never depend on who you are, where you come from, or who you support politically. It must depend solely on truth and law. Until that principle is restored, Zambia will remain a democracy only in name.

COURT HEARS FINGERPRINTS FROM MURDERED IBA DIRECTOR GENERAL’S VEHICLE MATCHED THOSE OF ONE OF THE SUSPECTS

The Lusaka High Court has heard that fingerprints lifted from the vehicle of murdered Independent Broadcasting Authority –IBA-Director General Guntila Muleya matched those of one of the suspects, systems engineer, Samuel Dokowe.

Scene of crime officer Victor Shamapango, 40, this morning testified before High Court Judge Vincent Siloka that he was assigned on July 26, 2024 to inspect an abandoned brown Toyota Prado, Registration BAL 5763, at G and Sons garage in Chawama.

Mr. Shamapango said the subsequent forensic analysis returned a positive match to prints taken from the accused Samuel Dokowe, and that he informed the investigating officer after receiving the results and confirmed that following initial inquiries, investigators had located and detained 4 suspects in connection with the matter.

In this case, 2 police officers M’thusani Dokowe Basa and Alex Caleb Zulu, Businessman Samuel Dokowe, and IBA Accountant Francis Chipyoka are jointly accused of murder contrary to Section 200 of the Penal Code over the killing of Mr. Muleya, which is believed to have occurred in Njolwe area of Lusaka last year.

LAWYER JONAS ZIMBA QUESTIONS TIMING OF BILL 7 COMMITTEE APPOINTMENT

LAWYER JONAS ZIMBA QUESTIONS TIMING OF BILL 7 COMMITTEE APPOINTMENT

LAWYER Jonas Zimba has expressed concern over the timing of President Hakainde Hichilema’s appointment of a committee to consult on Bill 7, saying the process should have been initiated earlier, before the bill was withdrawn from Parliament.

Mr. Zimba says the appointment appears to be a reactive step that leaves the future of Bill 7 unclear, contending that there must be a clear indication that the previous version has been fully withdrawn as consultations begin.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Zimba has also questioned how the consultation process will be funded, as no allocation for Bill 7 was made in the recently announced national budget.

He has further criticized what he described as a rushed reintroduction of the bill, warning that such an approach creates suspicion and that constitutional amendments should not be limited to electoral matters but must reflect the broader scope of national issues.

Meanwhile, development and governance expert Wesley Miyanda has challenged the government to explain why the committee has been appointed after earlier indicating that it had no intentions of reintroducing Bill 7 in Parliament.

Army general named as Madagascar PM to quell Gen Z protests

Army general named as Madagascar PM to quell Gen Z protests

By: BBC Africa

Madagascar’s embattled President Andry Rajoelina has appointed an army general as the new prime minister in a bid to end youth-led protests against his rule.

He said the nation needed a premier “capable of restoring order and the people’s trust” before naming Gen Ruphin Fortunat Zafisambo to the post.

Coming days after the president expressed fears of a coup attempt, the general’s appointment marks a significant militarisation of the government and appears to be an attempt by Rajoelina to secure the army’s backing at a time of heightened tensions.

The protest movement, known as Gen Z Mada, rejected Gen Zafisambo’s appointment, and gave Rajoelina 48 hours to resign.

From Father’s Dream to Son’s Legacy…Stephen Mikalile Builds on His Late Father’s Tanzanian Journey

From Father’s Dream to Son’s Legacy
…….Stephen Mikalile Builds on His Late Father’s Tanzanian Journey

When Stephen Mulenga Mikalile speaks about his entrepreneurial journey, his voice carries both pride and reverence. His story is not merely about business it is about legacy, resilience, and the power of continuing a father’s unfinished dream.

“My father went to Tanzania in pursuit of a better life; to earn an honest living through employment,” Mikalile recalled in an emotional reflection shared this week. “He made that journey with resilience, sacrifice, and a quiet determination to provide for his family.”

Years later, destiny led Stephen back to the same soil not as a job seeker like his father once was, but as a creator of opportunity. “I returned to Tanzania, not as a job seeker, but as a builder,” he said. “I established three companies: Mikalile Trading, Mika Meats, and Mika Clearing & Forwarding.”

His words paint a powerful picture of transformation from survival to creation, from following to leading. What began as one man’s pursuit of stability has evolved into a multi-sector enterprise shaping livelihoods across borders.

“What he started as a foundation, I have taken forward as a mission to grow, to expand, and to honor the trail he blazed for me,” Mikalile said with conviction. “His courage opened the door; I walked through it with purpose.”

Now, his work stands as both a tribute and a challenge to build beyond inheritance and redefine generational success. Mikalile says every business decision he makes carries the weight of his father’s sacrifice and the hope of his family’s continued progress.

“I hope that as I continue to grow and create, I can make him even prouder as he continues to rest in peace not only by what I achieve, but by the values I carry forward,” he said.

From humble beginnings to regional impact, Mikalile’s journey mirrors that of countless African sons and daughters inspired by the quiet strength of their parents. Yet his story stands out for its focus on continuity proving that true legacy is not in what we inherit, but in what we build upon.

Behind every company name and profit margin lies a story of love, sacrifice, and a dream passed from one generation to the next.

TANZANIAN EX-AMBASSADOR AND GOVERNMENT CRITIC ABDUCTED, FAMILY SAYS

TANZANIAN EX-AMBASSADOR AND GOVERNMENT CRITIC ABDUCTED, FAMILY SAYS

A former Tanzanian ambassador and outspoken government critic has been abducted by unknown individuals, his family says.

Humphrey Polepole’s brother told the BBC the alleged abduction had occurred in the early hours of Monday, at his home in Dar es Salaam.

“We went to the house where he was living and found the door broken, electric wires cut, and a large amount of blood spilled,” said Godfrey Polepole, the younger brother of the former ambassador. Videos of the bloody incident have been shared online.

He said the family had reported the matter after visiting the residence. Dar es Salaam’s Police Chief Jumanne Muliro has said they are following up on the reported incident.

The police boss appeared to question the reported attack, telling the BBC that the former ambassador to Cuba “often claimed to be out of the country”.

“So how could this happen at his home in Tanzania?” he asked.

“In short, just as you’re following this story, so am I also following on the incident because we also want to know what’s really happening,” he added.

National police spokesperson David Misime has issued a statement confirming that they had seen the reports online and were investigating.

He said they were still expecting Polepole to respond to summons and record a statement about a series of allegations he has made since he resigned in July.

Polepole stepped down from his ambassadorial post earlier this year after publicly criticising the government.

He stated he could no longer be part of an administration that, in his view, disrespects justice, the rule of law, and constitutional principles.

He was later formally stripped of his diplomatic status after President Samia Suluhu Hassan revoked his appointment.

He has since made various online allegations against government institutions and officials.

He also alleged that after his resignation, armed individuals had been seen loitering near his home and had harassed his family. He claimed his residence had been raided twice, with statements taken but no progress made in investigations.

Last month, the police opened a file against him, stating that the allegations could amount to criminal offences, without specifying what they were. He was also directed to report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to assist with investigations.

Tanzania is due to hold general elections on 29 October amid a tense environment.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan is running for a second and final term in office, after having taken office in 2021 following the death of John Magufuli.

She was initially praised for giving Tanzanians greater political freedom but has since faced widespread criticism for increasing repression, including a crackdown on political parties and civil society.

The main opposition party, Chadema, has been banned from participating in the polls, and its leader Tundu Lissu has been detained since April. Luhaga Mpina, the candidate of the second biggest opposition party ACT-Wazalendo has also been disqualified from running, leaving only candidates from minor parties to face President Samia.

In recent months, cases of abductions mostly targeting anti-government critics and opposition voices have also been on the rise.

‘Mkhwanazi is not proper before us’ — says Malema

‘Mkhwanazi is not proper before us’ — says Malema:

As Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi was set to take his oath before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, EFF leader Julius Malema raised his objections.

•Malema has challenged the call for Mkhwanazi to take an oath without providing a dedicated sworn statement before the committee. Malema argued that Mkhwanazi merely reused or supplemented his Madlanga Commission statement and has not provided an original one for the Ad Hoc Committee.

“Where have you ever heard of the first statement being deposed as a supplementary one?,” asked Malema.

•Malema has insisted that the committee adjourn until the issues raised are addressed.

“General Mkhwanazi is not proper before us… We are not a junior of the [Madlanga] commission,” says Malema.

“I might not be a lawyer, but I’m a lawmaker. There’s no such law that says a first statement can be called a supplementary. We won’t be embarrassed in front of cameras,” added Malema.

•Other MPs from MK Party, IFP, and ANC agreed with Malema.

•Malema also wants evidence leader Arendse to be removed, accusing him of undermining the chairperson.

“I really have no confidence in him,” says Malema of Arendse.

The Ad Hoc Committee has now been adjourned briefly.

Sean Tembo Orders Lubinda, Nakacinda to Attend Tonse Meeting Without Fail

⬆️ NEWS FLUSH | Sean Tembo Orders Lubinda, Nakacinda to Attend Tonse Meeting Without Fail

The Tonse Alliance is once again on edge. Spokesperson Sean Tembo has ordered Given Lubinda, Raphael Nakacinda, and other senior figures named in the newly announced Council of Leaders to attend today’s Tonse Alliance meeting “without fail.”

Tembo said the meeting would deliberate on unresolved matters from last week’s failed session, which was disrupted by suspected Patriotic Front cadres linked to the Lubinda camp. He confirmed that the time and venue would be communicated privately to each member.

“New members of the Tonse Alliance Council of Leaders, as per the expanded list, are required to attend without fail to undertake an affirmation of oath of office,” Tembo said.

The list of the so-called “new council” was released last week by Tembo and Chris Zumani Zimba, who claimed it had been sanctioned by late former President Edgar Lungu. It includes Lubinda and Nakacinda among other PF figures.

Lubinda, however, dismissed the list outright, calling it “zero guidance” and insisting that only the Secretary General’s office has authority to convene official alliance meetings.

The development sets up yet another showdown within the fragile opposition bloc, where factionalism, tribal accusations, and competing claims of legitimacy continue to fracture the Tonse Alliance ahead of the 2026 elections.

TRIBALISM IS VERY WRONG REGARDLESS OF WHO PERPETRATES IT – CHISHALA KATEKA

TRIBALISM IS VERY WRONG REGARDLESS OF WHO PERPETRATES IT – NEW HERITAGE PARTY

6 October 2025

A voice recording of Madam Mumbi Phiri doing the rounds on social media has her stating that to have a person from the Northern Province with a Running Mate from Eastern Province or vice versa, will ensure that they will win.

New Heritage Party would like to state that this is a very unfortunate statement coming from a person that is a national leader, that is very influential because their voice holds sway with the citizens.

At this time when the country is so polarised along party, tribal, regional, and ethnic lines, these sentiments by Madam Mumbi Phiri will lead to more division rather than unity and runs counter to fundamental precepts of our National Constitution as contained in the following articles:

Article 23 – Protection from discrimination on the grounds of race, tribe, sex, place of origin, marital status, political opinion, colour or creed.

Article 8 – Deals with National Values and Principles listing Human dignity, equity, social justice, equality, and non-discrimination in general as key national values and principles of our nation.

Article 60 – Deals specifically with Political Parties.  Political Parties are prohibited from being founded on religious, linguistic, racial, ethnic, tribal, gender, sectoral, or provincial basis or engaging in propaganda based on these factors.

Article 173 – Guiding Values and Principles of Public Service.  This article emphasises the importance of adequate and equal opportunities for appointments, training and advancement of members of both genders and importantly all ethnic groups in the Public Service.

As we, at New Heritage Party, have stated before, this country will not progress with such retrogressive thinking.  A house divided against itself will just not stand.

2026 affords us, as a country, to reset and this type and level of thinking just has no part in the Zambia that we would like to build for our children and children’s children.  The coming General Elections affords us an opportunity to draw a line under the insidious but ubiquitous practice of tribalism that has brought us to where we are.

2026 also gives us an opportunity to vote in a political formation committed to the dismantling of political cartels, including the current government) that have held Zambians hostage using tribe, ill-gotten wealth etc

As we approach the 2026 General Elections, let us find the best people for positions of leadership in Zambia, not based on area of origin, but based on merit.  We are in the mess that we are in, due to the fact that we have appointed people based on narrow sectarian considerations.  This must come to an end.

Any leader that promotes themselves and others on the basis of tribe, ethnicity, age, gender, is being segregative and is at variance with our Constitution as well as our founding motto of One Zambia One Nation.

The New Heritage Party has been very consistent and uncompromising on the question of sectarianism in the country.  We refer you to our following statements:

• Calling for the enactment of stronger laws against tribalism in Governments and Policy Making by our Vice President – Admin, on 5 April 2025.
• A Call to Unity on 4 August 2025
• A call to Unity – The Deeper Call on 5 August 2025
• A call to Unity – the Rationale 7 August 2025
• Tribalism in Public Institutions on 17 September 2025

We quote from our statement ‘A Call to Unity the Rationale’ of 7th August 2025

“As we stand at the crossroads of our nation’s history, we recognize the imperative for a united opposition political movement that embodies the spirit of inclusivity and collective purpose.

The daunting tasks ahead—transforming our country into a true multiparty democracy, unifying our people around a shared national development agenda, and resetting our national ethos and governance practices to reflect the founding fathers’ vision of ‘One Zambia, One Nation’—demand a unity of purpose and action that transcends partisan and other sectarian interests.

We envision a Zambia where citizenship is not defined by political affiliation or group (any group) identity but is a badge of honour, bestowed upon every individual by virtue of their birthright or legal residency. A Zambia where every citizen enjoys full human rights as enshrined in our Constitution, and where entry into public service is based on merit, competence, and a rigorous selection process.”

Zambians from both the ruling party and the opposition who think like Madam Mumbi Phiri, Mr Douglas Syakalima, Mr Amon Mweemba (RTSA CEO) and others like them, represent a thinking that is from an anachronistic period in the life of this country and that was roundly rejected in 1964 and the cry of One Zambia One Nation resounded through our nation.

Let us build a Zambia where do away with such thinking, let alone such practices.  Let us instead build a Zambia that is embracing of all its people regardless of where they hail from and let us unite around the common ‘Cause’ of developing our people to human dignity, equity, social justice, equality and above all, non-discrimination of our citizens for any reason whatsoever in accordance with article 8 of our Constitution on National Values and Principles.

Justice, Tribe, and the Temptation of Selective Outrage

⬆️ COURT WATCH | Justice, Tribe, and the Temptation of Selective Outrage

This week in Zambia’s courts, the conversation around justice has collided with politics again. The acquittal of Hibeene Mwiinga, the reopening of the Honey Bee corruption case, the conviction of Kingsley Chanda, and the bail granted to Maria Zaloumesi, popularly known as Zedfarmer, have all stirred sharp public reactions. Within hours of these rulings, Patriotic Front sympathisers claimed that the justice system targets Northerners and Easterners while protecting Tongas and Lozis.

Acquitted, But Questioned

The Lusaka Magistrate Court on Friday acquitted Hibeene Mwiinga, a former economic adviser to the late President Edgar Lungu, along with his wife Mercy Munsanje and son Hakaantu, of all corruption-related charges. The State had accused them of possessing proceeds of crime worth more than K41 million and over US$200,000, but the court ruled that prosecutors failed to prove the allegations.

Mwiinga, who comes from Southern Province, had long faced political scrutiny because of his ties to the former president. His acquittal reignited debate over whether justice is blind or influenced by invisible political balances.

Honey Bee Case Reopened

In a separate ruling, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) secured leave from the Economic and Financial Crimes Court to appeal out of time against the 2021 acquittal of former Health Minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya and Honey Bee Pharmacy Limited.

The case involves the controversial US$17 million health kit contract that became a national scandal. The court found that the original acquittal was irregular and made without proper jurisdiction, giving the DPP the right to reopen prosecution. The move signals renewed energy to revisit corruption cases that were closed under questionable circumstances.

ZRA Conviction and the “Car Scandal”

Former Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) Commissioner-General Kingsley Chanda was sentenced to six years in prison for abuse of authority. The court heard that he illegally donated government vehicles, including some confiscated from criminal operations, to PF officials and several clergymen. Among the beneficiaries was Archbishop Alick Banda, then a known PF ally.

The conviction has raised new debate about how far political patronage extended under the PF government and how blurred the line between state resources and party power became.

Zedfarmer Granted Bail

In another development, Maria Zaloumesi, popularly known as Zedfarmer, was granted bail after the court reduced her charge from murder to manslaughter in the Frank Simfukwe case. According to sources, the new findings showed the incident lacked premeditation. Zaloumesi, a Lozi, has been a social media personality and agricultural entrepreneur.

Her case has been widely covered, especially by those framing it as an example of regional bias in prosecution.

The Narrative of Tribal Justice

PF supporters have seized on these recent cases to argue that law enforcement agencies are sparing Tongas and Lozis while targeting Northerners and Easterners. But the logic does not stand up to scrutiny.

The truth is that most current prosecutions involve individuals who held senior government positions during the PF years. Their arrests are linked to access, not ancestry. When you controlled ministries, parastatals, and procurement, you inevitably became part of the accountability chain.

The claim of selective justice is a political shield, not an evidential argument. The same justice system that convicted a Bemba has also acquitted a Tonga. The same judiciary that jailed a Northerner has also freed a Lozi. What matters is not which region the accused comes from, but what evidence exists.

Justice Without Tribe

What Zambians should demand is consistency. The fight against corruption and abuse of office must be guided by evidence, not ethnicity. When your tribesman is jailed, do not look at the tribe; look at the proof. When another is acquitted, do not assume favour; ask for the record.

Justice, if it is to restore confidence, must remain unshaken by regional loyalties. The moment citizens begin to see handcuffs through tribal lenses, justice itself becomes tribal.

The reality is simple. Many former officials from Northern and Eastern provinces are now facing the law because they occupied the levers of power for a decade which is under scrutiny. That is not persecution. It is the return of accountability.

As one senior lawyer put it outside the Lusaka High Court yesterday, “The problem is not who is being prosecuted. The problem is that we still see tribe before truth.”

If Zambia is to move forward, that must change.

Mr. Nakacinda explains that the current developments are part of a broader realignment process aimed at fulfilling the mandate placed before the opposition, including fostering unity.

He has told Phoenix News in an interview that there is need to build a solid and united opposition front to provide a credible alternative and form government after the 2026 general elections.

Mr. Nakacinda has described the internal disagreements in the Tonse Alliance as teething issues, saying while they may create a perception of division, alliance partners remain resolved and committed to doing what is right for Zambians.

OPPOSITION’S GREATEST ENEMY IS ITSELF, SAYS KOMBONI PRESIDENT

OPPOSITION’S GREATEST ENEMY IS ITSELF, SAYS KOMBONI PRESIDENT

Lusaka… Tuesday October 7, 2025 – Munali strongman and political commentator Thomas Sipalo, popularly known as Komboni President, has said the biggest challenge facing Zambia’s opposition is not the ruling UPND, but the opposition’s own internal divisions and greed for power.

Speaking in a statement, Sipalo lamented that senior opposition leaders were too driven by self-interest and personal ambition, with many aspiring to lead while refusing to be led by others.

He noted that this attitude had led to the downfall of alliances such as the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA), which collapsed under the weight of competing egos and self-serving ambitions.

According to him, the formation of the Tonse Alliance had initially given many Zambians hope for change, but it seemed to have been merely a rebranded version of UKA, still composed of the same leaders and plagued by the same problems of greed and disunity.

The Komboni ‘President’ questioned how the opposition could hope to win an election when unity was consistently undermined by personal ambition.

He emphasized that with only a few months left before the elections, each senior politician wanted to be president, making it impossible to agree on a single candidate who could unite the opposition.

He further expressed disappointment that the insatiable greed and appetite for power among senior politicians had distorted the country’s political environment, noting that their behavior had negatively influenced many young politicians.

Mr. Sipalo observed that no senior politician appeared willing to follow another’s leadership, insisting that all wanted to lead.

He added that this was evidence that elderly politicians had failed to provide unity of purpose, and suggested that a new generation of young, untainted leaders should take charge of Zambia’s political future.

In his remarks, he also echoed leadership author Robin Sharma’s sentiment, stating that “ego is the worst enemy of success.”

Meanwhile, Sipalo asserted that the real obstacle for the opposition in Zambia was not the ruling UPND, but rather the greed and refusal of senior politicians to unite behind a single leader.

PF Declares “Tonse List” Illegal, Tightens Alliance Control Amid Internal Realignment

PF Declares “Tonse List” Illegal, Tightens Alliance Control Amid Internal Realignment

The Patriotic Front (PF) has declared the so-called “Tonse List” illegal and warned its members against attending any unauthorized alliance meetings, in what analysts see as a move to tighten control over internal and alliance-related activities.

The decision followed a Central Committee meeting held on Monday, October 6, 2025, at the PF Secretariat in Lusaka, chaired by Acting Party President Hon. Given Lubinda, alongside senior party officials including Emmanuel Mpakata, Mulenga Kampamba, George Chisanga, and Raphael Mangani Nakachinda.

In a communiqué issued on Tuesday, Secretary General Nakachinda said the meeting was “characterised by unity, discipline, and constructive deliberations,” adding that it focused on consolidating party structures and reaffirming PF’s participation in the Tonse Alliance. However, the resolutions adopted suggest a party increasingly determined to centralize decision-making amid growing uncertainty over its alliance role and leadership direction.

The Central Committee dismissed the so-called “Tonse List” a document purporting to assign PF members to Tonse Alliance positions as “illegal and of no effect.” Members whose names appeared on the list were instructed to disregard it entirely.

The directive appears to target individuals allegedly aligning with external alliance factions, underscoring the PF leadership’s effort to prevent internal divisions ahead of the party’s planned General Conference.

The meeting also ruled that only the PF Secretary General or the officially recognized Tonse Alliance Chairperson can convene or authorize alliance meetings involving PF members.

Nakachinda cautioned that any meetings not sanctioned through these official channels would be deemed “illegal” and that attendance by PF members would constitute disciplinary misconduct. Political observers say the move reflects a strategic attempt to maintain message discipline and reassert the party’s identity within the broader Tonse coalition.

As part of its resolutions, the PF Central Committee approved the appointment of a special committee to visit the family of the late President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, with the aim of updating them on preparations for the upcoming General Conference.

Nakachinda said the visit would reaffirm the party’s respect for Lungu’s legacy and the role he played in shaping the PF’s identity. Insiders say the gesture could also serve to mend relations between the party’s old guard and newer factions.

The Central Committee further endorsed the Conference Organising Committee, tasked with overseeing the logistics and structure of the anticipated General Conference. The event, viewed as a turning point for the PF’s post-Lungu era, is expected to address internal leadership transitions, party renewal, and strategy heading into the 2026 general elections. Nakachinda urged members to remain disciplined, loyal, and united behind the party’s leadership.

The PF reaffirmed its commitment to unity, democratic values, and internal renewal. Nakachinda emphasized that the party will continue to “protect its structures, defend its members, and promote the values of service, justice, and inclusiveness.”

Davies Mwila dumps  Brian Mundubile

Davies Mwila dumps Mundubile

My support was for Brian Mundubile, but I now have to compare him with Willah Mudolo, and it’s my democratic right to do so, says former PF Secretary General Davies Mwila.

Speaking with Daily Revelation over the weekend on the new entrance of South Africa-based Zambian entrepreneur Mudolo into the PF presidential race, Mwila defended Mudolo’s constitutional right to stand for presidency in the former ruling party.

Asked about the reported traction Mudolo is said to be getting in the PFand that already a significant portion of party stalwarts and the base were flocking to South Africa “like they were getting on flash buses” to meet up with him —Mwila responded:

“First and foremost, me from the word go I said I will support Brian Mundubile. That has been my decision. I have not hidden that,” Mwila said.

PAC Leader Andyford Banda Tears Into UPND’s 2026 Budget: “Zambia Has Reached Its Tax and Debt Ceiling”

PAC Leader Andyford Banda Tears Into UPND’s 2026 Budget: “Zambia Has Reached Its Tax and Debt Ceiling”

In a fiery and uncompromising press briefing dubbed “State of the Nation” held in Lusaka on Monday, People’s Alliance for Change (PAC) President Andyford Mayele Banda took aim at the UPND government’s 2026 national budget, describing it as “bloated, unsustainable, and politically motivated.”

Banda accused President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration of presiding over a “cycle of cosmetic budgets” that fail to address Zambia’s core economic problems poverty, unemployment, and weak local enterprise participation.

“We have reached a point where both tax and debt have hit the ceiling. We have introduced every tax imaginable, and yet the debt situation is still not sustainable,” Banda charged. “The government keeps spending more while ordinary citizens continue to sink deeper into poverty.”

A Budget of Numbers Without Substance

The 2026 National Budget, presented to Parliament by Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane, proposes a record K253.1 billion in expenditure up from K173 billion in 2022, representing a 32% increase over five years.

Government projects to raise K206.5 billion from domestic revenue, K12.1 billion in grants, K21.6 billion through domestic borrowing, and K12.9 billion from external sources.

But according to Banda, behind the glossy numbers lies a dangerous trend.

“In four years, the UPND has accumulated close to USD 4 billion in new debt,” he said. “Meanwhile, taxes keep piling up on mobile money, property transfers, petroleum products, and even remittances. The ordinary Zambian is being squeezed dry to fund political ambitions, not national progress.”

Inflation, Poverty, and Empty Promises

Banda mocked government’s repeated promise to bring inflation down to the 6–8% range, saying such targets are “fantasy economics.”

“They promised to cut inflation to single digits in 2025 and failed. Now they repeat the same lie in 2026,” he said. “How will inflation drop when the cost of doing business is rising, the kwacha is unstable, and energy tariffs keep climbing?”

Citing the 2022 Living Conditions Monitoring Survey by ZamStats, Banda highlighted the 60% national poverty rate with nearly 79% of rural Zambians living below the poverty line.

“Has the UPND reduced poverty in the last four years? Absolutely not,” he declared. “They boast about enrolling 2.4 million children in free education, but that’s not success, it’s a symptom of worsening poverty.”

Social Spending vs. Production

The PAC president took particular issue with what he termed the UPND’s “social welfare obsession” heavy spending on cash transfers, free education, and relief programs without equivalent investments in production and economic empowerment.

“Social programs are good, but they don’t lift people out of poverty. You cannot run a country by giving half the population free things,” Banda argued. “If you boost buying power through jobs and business opportunities, the economy grows naturally. But if you pin your strategy on handouts, you shrink it.”

He noted that Social Cash Transfer allocations have ballooned from K3.1 billion in 2022 to K8.2 billion in 2025, a trend he says reflects rising desperation, not development.

“Even the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) has lost its purpose. The UPND is spending K8.7 billion to produce almost the same maize output that the PF achieved with K5.7 billion where’s the efficiency?” Banda questioned.

Elections and the Politics of Spending

Banda suggested that the 2026 budget is laced with political motives ahead of next year’s general election.

“The government has doubled the election budget from K600 million in 2021 to K1.2 billion in 2026,” he said. “They have also hiked domestic borrowing from K15 billion to K21.6 billion, just to fund politically sweet projects like CDF and roads. This is not fiscal prudence it’s vote-buying with taxpayers’ money.”

He further accused the government of “massaging figures” on debt repayment, noting that despite allocating K22 billion for arrears clearance between 2022 and 2025, domestic arrears have ballooned to K84 billion.

“Why increase spending when you can’t pay off old bills? The math doesn’t add up unless the goal is political, not economic,” he said.

PAC’s Vision: “This Time, It’s Time for Zambia”

Banda said PAC’s alternative would focus on production, local ownership, and protection of Zambian businesses from foreign domination.

“No foreigner should be making blocks, keeping chickens, or selling second-hand vehicles while Zambians remain spectators in their own economy,” Banda stated bluntly. “If the United States can demand a $15,000 bond from Zambian travelers under their America First policy, why can’t we also put Zambia first?”

He announced PAC’s plan to replace cash handout schemes with a Sustainable Agriculture Financing Facility and reorient the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) and Zambia National Service (ZNS) toward large-scale food production and outgrower models.

“We don’t need another CDF to buy wheelbarrows; we need billion-dollar Zambian mine owners,” he said. “That’s how we build wealth.

A Harsh Verdict on Energy Policy

On energy, Banda dismissed government’s projection of adding 1,500 MW to the grid as “a recycled promise without a plan.”

He accused the UPND of manipulating power supply for political gain, saying,

“Now they are rushing to light up the compounds before 2026 so that voters think the government is working. It’s a cheap trick — Zambians are no longer that gullible.”

He urged the government to adopt innovative solar financing models, prioritize industrial power supply, and open the TAZAMA pipeline to all oil marketers to stabilize fuel supply.

“Budget of Illusion”

In closing, Banda described the 2026 national budget as “a budget of illusion made to look good on paper but hollow in impact.”

“The UPND’s five years of budgeting have failed to create jobs, failed to reduce poverty, and failed to transform the economy,” he concluded. “Zambians deserve a government that protects them from exploitation and restores dignity to local enterprise. This time, it’s time for Zambia.”

PF TO CONSULT LATE PRESIDENT LUNGU’S FAMILY AHEAD OF GENERAL CONFERENCE

PF TO CONSULT LATE PRESIDENT LUNGU’S FAMILY AHEAD OF GENERAL CONFERENCE

By Victoria Kayeye Yambani

The Patriotic Front (PF) Central Committee has resolved to send a special delegation to the family of the late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu to brief them on progress made towards the forthcoming General Conference and reaffirm the party’s continued respect for his legacy and leadership.

The decision was made during the Central Committee meeting held on Monday, 6th October 2025, at the PF Secretariat in Lusaka, chaired by Acting Party President Given Lubinda, alongside National Chairman Emmanuel Mpakata, National Chairlady Mulenga Kampamba, Legal Chairperson George Chisanga, and Secretary General Raphael Mangani Nakachinda.

The meeting, described as highly united and disciplined, also approved the establishment of a Conference Organising Committee to oversee logistics and preparations for the much-anticipated PF General Conference.

In addition, the Central Committee declared the so-called Tonse List illegal and of no effect, directing all PF members listed on it to disregard such appointments as they were not sanctioned by the party.

The leadership also guided that only the Secretary General or the duly recognised Tonse Alliance Chairperson has the authority to convene alliance meetings involving PF members, warning that any other gatherings would be considered illegal.

Secretary General Raphael Nakachinda commended the strong turnout and unity of purpose demonstrated by the members, emphasising the PF’s ongoing commitment to renewal, internal democracy, and disciplined leadership.

The party reaffirmed its resolve to defend its members, strengthen its structures, and uphold the values of service, justice, and inclusiveness as it prepares for its next phase of leadership and participation within the Tonse Alliance.

PF under attack because it still has value – Nakacinda

PF under attack because it still has value – Nakacinda

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) faction secretary general Raphael Nakacinda says the confusion, criticism and internal wrangles currently rocking the former ruling party are proof that the PF remains politically valuable and still commands the attention of the Zambian people.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1bHoXsGDfR/

Speaking during an interview on Diamond TV last night, Nakacinda said Zambians are currently enduring a high cost of living, persistent load shedding, and high fuel prices, challenges that have created widespread frustration.

However, he argued that the opposition, including the PF, has unfairly been painted as disorganised when in reality, it remains the only viable political alternative.

“The only reason why PF is in so much attack, is because there is value in Patriotic Front,” Nakacinda said.

“You know, there’s a saying that if you see some animals fighting, they may not be fighting if there’s nothing valuable there.”

Nakacinda revealed that the perceived leadership vacuum within the Tonse Alliance, should not be mistaken for failure but rather seen as part of a process of internal reorganisation.

According to him, Zambians are beginning to reflect on the decision to vote PF out of power in 2021, realizing that much of the condemnation against the former ruling party was a result of heavy propaganda.

JUSTICE MUST TRANSCEND POLITICS, SAYS SP YOUTH CHAIRMAN

JUSTICE MUST TRANSCEND POLITICS, SAYS SP YOUTH CHAIRMAN

Lusaka… Tuesday October 7, 2025 – The Socialist Party’s Lusaka District Youth Chairman, Paul Mulenga, has urged Zambians to uphold justice as a principle rooted in equality and impartiality, emphasizing that it must be applied without political bias or favoritism.

Speaking on the importance of fairness in Zambia’s governance and legal systems, Mulenga said that justice should serve all citizens equally, regardless of their political affiliations.

He stressed that when individuals seek assistance – whether legal, financial, or otherwise – such requests should be considered based solely on merit and necessity, not on political connections.

Mr. Mulenga stated that prioritizing political loyalty over genuine need undermines the very foundation of justice.

He warned that such practices could lead to a divided society where access to resources and support depends on party allegiance, resulting in feelings of exclusion among those outside the favored political groups.

This, he said, could erode public trust in both governance and the justice system.

He further explained that being Zambian should represent a shared national identity that transcends party lines.

According to him, every citizen deserves fair treatment under the law, regardless of their political beliefs.

He added that the nation’s strength lies in unity and mutual respect, calling for concerted efforts to build a society where justice serves everyone equally.

Mr. Mulenga emphasized that institutions, policies, and decision-making processes must be designed to ensure transparency and fairness.

He noted that from the grassroots level to the highest offices, citizens should hold leaders accountable for maintaining an equitable system free from political manipulation.

Meanwhile, Mulenga reaffirmed the need for Zambians to view justice as a unifying force.

By ensuring impartiality in the country’s systems, he said, Zambia could create an environment where every citizen feels valued and empowered to contribute to a just and equitable society for future generations.

CONSIDER ZMP OR FDD FOR SPECIAL PURPOSE VEHICLE, SIWILA URGES PF

CONSIDER ZMP OR FDD FOR SPECIAL PURPOSE VEHICLE, SIWILA URGES PF

Lusaka… Tuesday October 7, 2025 – Former Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy National Youth Chairman, Benja Siwila, has urged the PF leadership to urgently identify another opposition political party as a special purpose vehicle to strengthen coordination and participation in national political activities following the withdrawal of Pastor Peter Chanda and his New Congress Party from the Tonse Alliance.

Mr. Siwila said the decision by Pastor Chanda’s party to prematurely exit the alliance should not discourage the opposition but rather serve as an opportunity to re-strategize and realign with other like-minded political movements that share the vision of offering credible checks and balances to the current administration.

He emphasized that the opposition landscape still has several viable partners, even within the Tonse Alliance, with valid documentation and shared political values.

Among these, he cited Zambia Must Prosper, led by Kelvin Fube Bwalya, and the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) under State Counsel Chifumu Banda, as examples of potential partners that could work effectively with the PF toward common national objectives.

Mr. Siwila stressed that while the Patriotic Front continues to address its ongoing legal battles, it remains crucial for the party to actively participate in upcoming by-elections as part of its broader mobilization and rebuilding efforts ahead of the 13th August, 2026 general elections.

He further called on the PF leadership and members to stay united and focused on strengthening grassroots structures, rebuilding public confidence, and consolidating alliances that will position the opposition as a credible alternative in the next electoral cycle.

“The PF must not allow internal challenges or alliance setbacks to derail its mission. The goal is to keep mobilizing, keep engaging, and ensure that we remain a formidable political force ready for 2026,” Mr. Siwila stated.
