Rudy Giuliani suffering from fractured vertebrae after traffic accident

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani reportedly suffered fractured vertebrae and other injuries after being involved in a traffic accident.

According to a statement signed by Michael Ragusa, Giuliani’s head of security, the incident occurred on Saturday after the former mayor “was flagged down by a woman who was the victim of a domestic violence incident.”

“Mayor Giuliani immediately rendered assistance and contacted 911. He remained on scene until responding officers arrived to ensure her safety,” the statement said. “Following this, while traveling on the highway, Mayor Giuliani’s vehicle was struck from behind at high speed. He was transported to a nearby trauma center, where he was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg.”

“The mayor is in great spirits. He’s a beast. He survived 9/11,” Ragusa told the New York Post.

Zimbabwe GDP jumps 7%

Zimbabwe’s economy registered strong growth in the second quarter of 2025, with gross domestic product (GDP) rising 7,01 percent compared to the previous quarter, according to figures released by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat).

The quarterly GDP stood at ZiG18,8 billion, up from ZiG17,5 billion in the first quarter. Year-on-year, output expanded by 11,04 percent, more than double the 5,10 percent growth recorded in the first three months of the year. ZimStat said the second quarter results marked the country’s strongest quarterly performance since before pandemic.

Mining and quarrying contributed the largest share of output at 14,9 percent, followed closely by manufacturing at 14,6 percent. Agriculture accounted for 12,2 percent, while wholesale and retail trade and financial services contributed 11 percent and 10,3 percent, respectively.

Firm global commodity prices and record gold deliveries—exceeding 11 tonnes in the quarter—helped propel mining. The ramping up of production at Dinson Iron and Steel Company’s plant also added to growth. Manufacturing gained from rising capacity utilisation in food processing, cement production and textiles, while agriculture benefitted from favourable rainfall and state-backed input schemes.

Economist Gladys Shumbambiri-Mutsopotsi described the figures as proof that policy interventions were beginning to pay off.
“This 7 percent growth rate is not just a number; it reflects an economy that is finding its rhythm,” she said.

Banker Raymond Madziva said the rebound was strengthening confidence in financial markets.
“The positive GDP trend gives confidence to lenders and investors. It also signals that Zimbabwe’s risk profile is gradually improving,” he said.

Analysts, however, warned that sustaining the momentum would require addressing structural weaknesses.
“The numbers are encouraging, but they should not lull us into complacency,” said economist Tinevimbo Shava. “Energy supply, infrastructure gaps and governance in State-owned enterprises must be tackled if this growth is to continue.”

Walter Mandeya of Trigrams Investments added that the recovery must translate into tangible benefits for citizens.
“This is a positive development, but it must cascade further to individuals. A much better picture is when this GDP growth rate leads to job creation, stability in prices, or the availability of basic goods,” he said.

The upbeat report provides a boost to the Government as it prepares the 2026 National Budget, with policymakers expected to focus on expanding renewable energy, strengthening the investment climate and deepening mineral beneficiation.

Chiwenga secures India vehicle production deal

Zimbabwe has made significant strides at the India-Africa Business Conclave, which concludes today, with Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga leading a delegation that secured landmark partnerships set to boost the country’s industrial and agricultural sectors.

A highlight of the conclave was the signing of a full assembly agreement between Willowvale Motor Industries and Indian vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland, a global specialist in trucks and buses. The partnership, which initially began in 2021 but stalled, was renewed in 2024 and is now poised to commence operations by January next year. The agreement is expected to revitalize Zimbabwe’s automotive industry, create jobs, and strengthen local manufacturing capabilities, in line with government efforts to promote economic self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imports.

“Zimbabwe and India’s economic cooperation continues to grow from strength to strength,” said VP Chiwenga. “This is a landmark achievement, an example of how strategic partnerships create value chains, jobs and growth. We are seeking partnerships to grow our economy through value chains and beneficiation, leveraging our comparative advantage as an investment destination of choice.”

The conclave also highlighted significant opportunities in Zimbabwe’s sugar industry, with Platinum Crest Agro Ventures expressing interest in a US$170 million integrated sugar production project. The initiative is designed to cover the entire value chain and is expected to transform the sector, increase productivity, and create economic opportunities for local farmers. “This facility is poised to become one of the largest and most advanced sugar factories in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa,” said Platinum Crest director Nitin Kadam, noting the project reflects Indian industry’s confidence in Zimbabwe’s potential.

In addition, VP Chiwenga welcomed Naveen Jindal, Chairman of the Jindal Group, for discussions on ongoing energy projects with the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA). Jindal and ZESA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the refurbishment of Hwange Units 1 to 6, a project that could add up to 800MW to the national grid. Mr Jindal emphasised that the collaboration aims to benefit both the country and local communities through corporate social responsibility initiatives.

At the conclave, VP Chiwenga addressed a country session advocating for increased investment in Zimbabwe and engaged with potential investors, outlining the nation’s strategic vision for industrial growth and economic development. The agreements and discussions secured at the event mark a significant step forward in strengthening Zimbabwe’s industrial, agricultural, and energy sectors while fostering deeper India-Africa economic cooperation.

Mnangagwa leaves Rome, off to Chinese Anniversary

President Mnangagwa is expected to arrive in Beijing today ahead of the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and World Anti-Fascist War commemorations set for Wednesday.

He will join 26 other Heads of State and Government, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, at Tiananmen Square for a military parade and related events hosted by China. The commemoration marks the 1931–1945 conflict in which an estimated 35 million Chinese were killed or wounded, with Japan surrendering in September 1945.

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to China, Abigail Shoniwa, said Mnangagwa is among a select group of African leaders invited, underscoring the depth of ties between Harare and Beijing. “China was with us during our liberation struggle and trained some of our liberation fighters, among them the President. Our relationship has grown stronger over the years,” she said.

While in China, Mnangagwa will also hold bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping to deepen co-operation across politics, trade, security, culture, and international coordination — pillars of the Five-Star Ironclad partnership framework established last year.

China is Zimbabwe’s top trading partner and largest investor, with cumulative investments exceeding US$4,4 billion and bilateral trade reaching US$3,8 billion in 2024, up 24 percent year-on-year. Major projects include the Hwange Units 7 and 8 expansion, Kariba South Hydro Power Extension, airport upgrades, and the new National Pharmaceutical Warehouse.

Mnangagwa is also expected to meet Chinese companies with interests in Zimbabwe. Last month, the two countries signed a US$55 million Economic and Technical Co-operation Agreement and exchanged letters for food assistance worth US$6,9 million.

China’s Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei said the war’s legacy continues to inspire liberation movements worldwide, adding that Beijing remains committed to global peace, development, and inclusive economic growth.-The Herald

Fake lawyer with ‘10-years experience’ arrested

The Zone XI Police Headquarters has arrested a suspected fake lawyer identified as Emmanuel Odeh, parading himself as a qualified attorney for almost 10 years mostly in Lagos and Abuja.

In a statement released on Saturday, August 30, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Ade Ogunyemi, disclosed that Odeh was arrested by operatives of the X-Squad Section of the Zone, led by ACP Akinloye Oyegade at a court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while appearing as counsel for a client on Thursday, August 28.

“Emmanuel Odeh was arrested on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at a court premises in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while standing as a legal representative for an unsuspecting client. ACP Oyegade stated that the self-acclaimed lawyer had been under investigation for impersonation and fraud.

Investigations revealed that the suspect operated under the name A O EMMANUEL, LEGAL PRACTITIONER AND PUBLIC CONSULTANT,” the statement partly read.

Ogunyemi said the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone XI Headquarters, Osogbo, Emuobo Ekokotu, urged Nigerians to always verify the authenticity of legal practitioners before engaging their services.

“Victims of such impostors risk losing their hard-earned money, suffering inadequate legal representation, having their cases compromised, and even facing damage to their reputation,” he said.

He warned that the police will not hesitate to bring impersonators to justice.

“This incident should serve as a deterrent to criminal-minded individuals who falsely present themselves as lawyers in order to exploit innocent citizens. The long arm of the law will always catch up with them,” Ekokotu stated.

The police imagemaker added that the suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed.

Trump seen heading to golf course after #TrumpIsDead trends

US President, Donald Trump was seen leaving the White House on Sunday morning, August 31, in golf attire before heading to his country club in Northern Virginia, following days of online speculation about his health.

The 79-year-old president wore golf shoes, black pants, a black pullover, and a white “USA” hat as he boarded a black SUV. His motorcade arrived at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia, shortly after 10 a.m.

The sighting comes after Trump took a brief hiatus from public appearances, prompting rumors on social media — including trending hashtags such as #TrumpIsDead and #WhereIsTrump — suggesting he was seriously ill or had died.

On Truth Social, Trump shared a post about playing golf with former NFL coach Jon Gruden, calling him “a really nice guy, and true character!” It remains unclear whether the photo shared with the post was taken on Sunday.

The speculation began when the White House released a blank schedule for the Labor Day weekend and the president had not been seen publicly since a Tuesday cabinet meeting. Trump was also seen golfing on Saturday with his granddaughter, Kai, further dispelling rumors of ill health.

Putin and Zelensky and I will meet together- Trump

US Leader, Donald Trump says a trilateral meeting between himself, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “will happen” — but likely not before the war continues “a little longer.”

He dismissed the possibility of a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelensky but insisted a three-way summit would take place with his involvement.

“A tri would happen. A bi, I don’t know about, but a tri will happen,” Trump told the Daily Caller. “But you know, sometimes people aren’t ready for it.”

Trump has separately met with both Putin and Zelensky to hear their conditions for ending the war. Ukraine has shown support for a U.S.-backed cease-fire proposal, but Russia has rejected making concessions and has refused to recognize Zelensky as a legitimate leader, citing the suspension of elections in Kyiv due to the invasion.

Moscow has suggested lower-level talks before a potential summit, but Zelensky dismissed the idea, calling it another stalling tactic as Russia continues drone and missile attacks across Ukraine.

Trump emphasized his relationship with Putin as a possible way to push for a meeting but added, “Maybe they have to fight a little longer” before peace talks can progress. He compared the situation to children fighting on a playground before being ready to stop.

The war, now in its third year, has become Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War II, with estimated casualties reaching 1.4 million, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. This includes about 250,000 Russian soldiers and 100,000 Ukrainian troops, with thousands more killed each week.

While Trump has ruled out sending U.S. troops to Ukraine, he suggested post-war air support could be considered to bolster Kyiv’s defense.

NYIRENDA DARES UPND TO RELEASE PF AND FACE THE REAL GIANT

NYIRENDA DARES UPND TO RELEASE PF AND FACE THE REAL GIANT

Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy Secretary General Brenda Nyirenda has accused the UPND government of clinging to power by suppressing the opposition, saying the ruling party is only secure because it has caged the PF.

Responding to former Southern Province Minister Dr. Edify Hamukale who claimed there was no national push to unseat President Hakainde Hichilema because economic fundamentals were improving, Nyirenda dismissed the remarks, insisting UPND’s comfort is artificial.

“They are not battling real competition. They are wrestling with small opposition fragments while blocking the true giant. Release the PF, then they will see the political ground shake,” Nyirenda charged.

She accused the ruling party of using legal and administrative tricks to bar PF candidates from elections, warning that Zambia risks sliding into a one-party state.

“Zambians deserve democracy, not stage-managed politics. The UPND must face the PF in a fair contest if they dare,” Nyirenda said.

TWO YEARS IS ENOUGH FOR ME – NJOBVU

TWO YEARS IS ENOUGH FOR ME – NJOBVU

While others have struggled to deliver their campaign promises, Democratic Union president Ackim Antony Njobvu says he can easily transform Zambia in less than five years.

The outspoken politician says two years is enough for one to lay a strong foundation for tangible development and progress.

And Njobvu says leadership is not about holding on to power, but service to the people. He says vision and integrity is key.

“I don’t care about elections but I care for the future of our children. If you give me the mandate in 2026, I will not seek another term,” read a Facebook post on his page.

The DU leader has recently been calling for a complete overhaul  in Zambian politics, stating that it is time for vibrant and energetic minds to take charge of the country’s affairs.

Njobvu has emphasizesd that next year’s elections presents an opportunity for Zambians to retire current leaders to the madalaz league.

GAWA UNDI PROPOSES INTRODUCTION OF SOME FORM OF GRATUITY FOR CHIEFS PAID BETWEEN 3 TO 5 YEARS.

GAWA UNDI PROPOSES INTRODUCTION OF SOME FORM OF GRATUITY FOR CHIEFS PAID BETWEEN 3 TO 5 YEARS.

By: Sun FM TV Reporter

Kalonga Gawa Undi of the Chewa-speaking people has urged government to provide more funding to the Office of the Chief to enhance effective and efficient service delivery.

Speaking at the Kulamba Traditional Ceremony, the Gawa Undi appealed for an upward adjustment of subsidies paid to chiefs and proposed the introduction of gratuities for traditional leaders between three to five years.

He explained that such support would help office bearers sustain themselves once they leave office.

The traditional leader further emphasized the need for collaboration with local authorities in the implementation of development projects. He also raised concerns over the rate at which customary land is being converted into state land, calling for greater consideration and protection of traditional land ownership.

Meanwhile, President Hakainde Hichilema has announced that government will, in the next national budget, increase allowances for chiefs and their retainers.

President Hichilema reiterated that government regards traditional leaders as key partners in national development.

And Eastern Province  Minister Peter Phiri Thanked President HICHILEMA and his Counterpart Lazarus Chakwera for Gracing the Event.

VALDEN FINDLAY SAYS ECONOMY IS VERY BAD

He writes:

Respect

If there has ever been a time to respect small business owners, it is now. The deck is absolutely stacked against you.

Abnormal interest rates, fees upon fees,  taxes upon taxes, difficulties in getting any capital, competition from foreign entities, weakened economy, political uncertainty, high unemployment leading to so many dependents, no tangible framework for SME support and very little foreign direct investment.

Applaud yourselves. You are amazing and you should be celebrated for every sacrifice you are making for yourselves, your families, your loved ones and your country at large.

I know how hard it is. I know how many sleepless nights it take when things are just refusing to add up. Keep up with the same spirit. We all need you. Whether we acknowledge it or not. Happy Weekend.

JUDGE CONCEPTOR CHINYANUWA ZULU: A BETRAYAL OF JUDICIAL ETHICS AND PUBLIC TRUST- Prof. Proud Moonga, PhD

EDITOR’S CHOICE- JUDGE CONCEPTOR CHINYANUWA ZULU: A BETRAYAL OF JUDICIAL ETHICS AND PUBLIC TRUST

By Prof. Proud Moonga, PhD, Lecturer, University of Michigan, USA

In recent weeks, I have written extensively about the growing crisis within Zambia’s judiciary. I have specifically raised concerns about the conduct and integrity of Chief Justice Mumba Malila, who continues to portray Zambia abroad as a thriving democracy while overseeing an alarming erosion of judicial independence at home. The contradiction is not only disturbing, it is dangerous.

Now, Judge Conceptor Chinyanuwa Zulu has become another troubling figure in this pattern of judicial failure. In the matter involving the Patriotic Front (PF), both parties reportedly agreed to a consent judgment since April 2025, a perfectly legitimate and routine legal resolution. Yet, Judge Zulu has thus far refused to endorse it. What is she waiting for? Who is she waiting for? Why ignore a settlement mutually agreed upon by the parties involved?

This isn’t the first time we have seen this kind of behavior. Judge Chocho, too, once granted a stay after a questionable PF conference, only to reverse it two days later. That decision paved the way for Miles Sampa to act unilaterally, in what many believe was a politically engineered operation. The judiciary’s inconsistency in these matters only serves to deepen public distrust, and it raises a serious concern: Is the bench still independent, or is it merely an extension of the executive?

Let me make one thing clear: I am neither PF nor UPND. I speak not as a partisan, but as a Zambian deeply alarmed by the dangerous direction in which our democracy is heading.

Zambia’s hard-earned multiparty democracy is under attack not from outside forces, but from within. For the first time since the reintroduction of multiparty politics in 1991, we are witnessing a ruling party that appears committed to dismantling the largest opposition party in Parliament, with judicial aid and legislative silence. This is not just undemocratic, it is unprecedented.

A vibrant opposition is not a nuisance in democracy, it is its lifeblood. In any true multiparty system, the opposition exists to hold the government accountable, to represent alternative voices, and to offer citizens a meaningful choice in governance. When the opposition is weakened, co-opted, or destroyed, democracy itself is suffocated. The line between government and opposition becomes blurred, and with it, the accountability and transparency that are the foundation of democratic life.

Look at our Parliament today. Many PF MPs, particularly those aligned with Robert Chabinga, now sing in harmony with the ruling party. The current Leader of the Opposition, who should serve as the nation’s democratic watchdog, appears instead to act as an informal government spokesperson. This collapse of opposition function strikes at the heart of democratic principles and betrays the very citizens who voted for balance, not a monologue

More worrying is that this dismantling of democracy is being aided by the very institution tasked with upholding the Constitution, the Judiciary. Instead of acting as a check on executive overreach, it is behaving like an accomplice. In a healthy democracy, the judiciary defends the rule of law without fear or favor. In Zambia today, we must ask: who is the judiciary really serving?

We cannot afford to be silent. When the judiciary begins to tilt toward executive interests, when opposition voices are suppressed, and when the democratic process is manipulated for political expediency, every citizen loses. Today it may be the PF. Tomorrow it could be any other group that dares to challenge those in power. That is why this is not a partisan fight, it is a fight for the survival of our democracy.

Zambians must now decide whether we are willing to watch our democratic institutions be hollowed out from the inside, or whether we will stand up to defend the values that have long set us apart in the region: pluralism, constitutionalism, and the rule of law.

If we fail to act now, Zambia may soon become a democracy in name only, a state where elections still happen, but choice, freedom, and justice are illusions.

RESPONSE TO MR. VALDEN FINDLAY’S ARTICLE ON THE ECONOMY

RESPONSE TO MR. VALDEN FINDLAY’S ARTICLE ON THE ECONOMY

By Timmy

We wishes to acknowledge the concerns raised by Mr. Valden Findlay regarding the state of the Zambian economy. While it is the democratic right of every citizen to express an opinion, it is equally important to place facts on the table and give the people of Zambia the full picture of where we are as a nation.

Since President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND government took office in 2021, Zambia has recorded historic progress across multiple fronts that directly impact businesses, families, and future generations. To suggest that “no tangible framework for SME support” exists under this administration is not only misleading, but it also dismisses the concrete achievements made to date.

Debt Restructuring – This government successfully negotiated one of the most complex debt restructuring deals in Zambia’s history, unlocking fresh confidence in our economy and laying a solid foundation for growth. Without this achievement, the small businesses Mr. Findlay refers to would be operating under even more difficult conditions.

Access to Finance for SMEs and Farmers – Through initiatives such as the Sustainable Agriculture Financing Facility (SAFF), CEEC loans, and CDF expansion to K36 million per constituency, Zambian entrepreneurs and small-scale farmers are, for the first time in decades, accessing structured and transparent funding opportunities.

Tax and Business Environment – The New Dawn government has systematically reduced unnecessary levies, abolished fuel and solar duties, scrapped off death penalties on overburdening households (like PAYE bands), and introduced free education which, in the long run, reduces pressure on family finances.

Job Creation and Human Capital Investment – Over 80,000 jobs have been created across sectors including teaching, health, defense, ZNS, ZAF, and police. These are not political gimmicks but tangible opportunities for families to regain dignity.

Stability and Rule of Law – Unlike the past, where uncertainty and corruption crippled investor confidence, Zambia today is being recognized internationally as a beacon of stability. IMF, World Bank, AfDB, Eurobond relief, and bilateral deals with Tanzania, Angola, and China are a clear testimony that the international community sees Zambia as a safe destination for investment

It is therefore unfair and inaccurate to reduce the government’s achievements to a blanket statement of “a weakened economy.” Yes, challenges remain  global interest rates, climate shocks, and post-pandemic recovery have affected every nation. But what matters is leadership, and under President Hichilema, Zambia has chosen a path of reform, stability, and long-term growth.

This legacy being built today is not just about statistics; it is about transforming lives. Free education, bursaries, access to healthcare, electricity expansion, bumper harvests, and fair maize prices are all evidence that Zambia is moving in the right direction.

The President has repeatedly said: “We inherited a broken economy, but we will fix it brick by brick, policy by policy.” Today, every honest Zambian can see that rebuilding is happening, and it is happening fast.

To our fellow citizens: let us celebrate progress where it is due, critique constructively, and above all, unite in building the Zambia we deserve.

President Hakainde Hichilema is not just governing he is building a legacy of reform and resilience that will be remembered in history.

Don’t forget to share, comment, and like our page to spread the truth about the progress Zambia is making under the New Dawn Government.

REV NDHLOVU: ONLY UNITY CAN SAVE ZAMBIA’S DEMOCRACY

REV NDHLOVU: ONLY UNITY CAN SAVE ZAMBIA’S DEMOCRACY

By Brian Matambo – Lusaka, Zambia

The EMV program hosted by Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba featured Reverend Dr. Japhet Ndhlovu, former General Secretary of the Council of Churches in Zambia. The discussion offered a sober reflection on Zambia’s democratic trajectory as the nation prepares for the 2026 elections, focusing on the shrinking of civic space, questions over institutional independence, and the urgent call for national unity.

Dr. Ndhlovu, a veteran of the 2001 Oasis Forum that successfully blocked a third term amendment, warned that the promises of wider freedoms made in 2021 have been replaced by fear and restrictions. “The space for democratic expression has been shrunk,” he said, noting that citizens live in “a spirit of fear” as restrictive laws and selective enforcement target dissenting voices.

ELECTORAL COMMISSION UNDER SCRUTINY
Ambassador Mwamba raised strong concerns over the independence of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ). He played a video clip of Hon. Miles Sampa, Member of Parliament for Matero and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, who argued that the Commission has been deliberately sidelining the Patriotic Front in by-elections. “They want a competition without opponents and then they celebrate that they are popular,” Sampa said.

In another video clip played during the show,  Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba questioned whether ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis would ever be in a position to declare President Hichilema a loser, given her political background.

Dr. Ndhlovu responded with urgency. “Civil society and opposition parties must not wait until crisis point,” he said. “They should camp at the ECZ now with specific demands for continuous registration, fairness, and neutrality. If institutions lose perceived independence, elections will not be credible, and instability will follow.”

THE “JOHN THE BAPTIST” CALL
Towards the end of the broadcast, an anonymous caller delivered what many considered the defining intervention of the evening. The caller insisted that Zambia needs a “John the Baptist” type of leader in the interim to shepherd the opposition alliance toward unity and eventually help identify the next presidential candidate.

“My comment is that the opposition needs a John the Baptist type of a leader in the interim who will lead the opposition alliance in the process of uniting the opposition and eventually finding the next president,” the caller said. “President Hakainde Hichilema, through what he calls imingalato, has continued to toy with the largest opposition party, effectively making him the enemy of democracy in this nation. The opposition should know that the strangulation of the Patriotic Front is the strangulation of democracy. There is no other way but unity in this regard. Reverend Ndhlovu, a legend of advocacy, please fly to Lusaka and come and give guidance to the opposition.”

The same caller raised one of the most sensitive questions facing the nation: the government’s legal action against former First Lady Esther Lungu in a South African court, which halted the burial of her late husband, President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. “The government and its supporters now claim it is the Lungu family delaying the burial, when in fact it was the state that stopped it,” the caller said. “Meanwhile, the President goes around making it appear as if the government is innocent. Can we invoke Exodus 22:22-24 as God’s promise to the widow?”

Dr. Ndhlovu described the spectacle as “an embarrassment to the nation” and urged both sides to engage in dialogue that would allow a dignified and respectful burial. He warned against a culture of political retribution that undermines national unity and Zambia’s international image.

ANALYSIS: A NATION AT A CROSSROADS
The program highlighted key themes that will define Zambia’s political climate in the coming year. Institutions tasked with safeguarding democracy are increasingly seen as compromised. Civic organizations that once spoke boldly, such as during the Oasis Forum era, have grown quieter. Fear is palpable among citizens, many of whom hesitate to speak openly, even on anonymous platforms.

Yet the discussion also offered a roadmap. Rev. Ndhlovu emphasized that opposition parties must seize the moment by uniting behind one credible candidate and by demanding electoral fairness well before polling day. “Ten presidential candidates will only deliver victory to the ruling party,” he cautioned. “The opposition must present one standard-bearer with national legitimacy.”

He further argued for systemic reforms to devolve power away from the presidency and into strong, independent institutions, citing judicial and electoral practices in Kenya as examples that Zambia could follow.

The EMV program made clear that Zambia stands at a crossroads. A weakened ECZ, the burial dispute of a former president, silenced civic voices, and the concentration of power in the presidency all pose serious risks to democratic stability.

Rev. Dr. Japhet Ndhlovu’s intervention was a clarion call. Government must govern with honesty and fairness. Civil society must recover its prophetic voice. And opposition leaders must unite to give Zambians a credible alternative.

“Unity is critical,” Dr. Ndhlovu concluded. “The people must be able to rejoice under governance that allows everyone to thrive, not one that rules through fear and division.”

… am I being punished because I’m a “North-Eastern Rhodesian-NER?”- Former ZAMMSA director general Victor Nyasulu

Former Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) director general Victor Nyasulu has demanded that the Law Enforcement Agencies which arrested him must immediately take him to court as it has been almost four months now since they effected the arrest.

And Nyasulu has questioned whether the fixation on him by the government is on account of him being a “north-eastern Rhodesian” or because the single procurement they have focused on involved local suppliers, while paying a blind eye to the three which were given to foreign firms.

UPND INTRODUCES NEW LAW TO TAX THE POOR FAILING TO MAKE PROFITS IN BUSINESS CALLED MINIMUM ALTERNATIVE TAX: AN ASSAULT ON ZAMBIA’S SMALL BUSINESSES AND HARD-WORKING CITIZENS- Kasonde Mwenda C -EFF President

Urgent PRESS STATEMENT

UPND INTRODUCES NEW LAW TO TAX THE POOR FAILING TO MAKE PROFITS IN BUSINESS CALLED MINIMUM ALTERNATIVE TAX: AN ASSAULT ON ZAMBIA’S SMALL BUSINESSES AND HARD-WORKING CITIZENS- Kasonde Mwenda C -EFF President

30th August 2025

The Economic Freedom Fighters strongly condemn the UPND government’s reckless and utterly insensitive introduction of the Minimum Alternative Tax (MAT) — a so-called revenue measure that is nothing short of an assault on Zambia’s entrepreneurs, small businesses, and the backbone of our rural economy.

This legislation is not only thoughtless and ill-conceived, but outright heartless. By slapping a blanket 1% tax on gross turnover, regardless of profit or loss, the government is targeting those who toil day and night to put food on the table — from the smallholder farmer with rotational crops to the corner shop owner grappling with ever-rising costs.

Take the example of an ordinary Zambian in agriculture, who rotates crops but depends on maize as the mainstay. In years of low rain or market shocks, profits vanish, yet the MAT forces them to pay tax on every kwacha earned, even if the harvest barely breaks even or runs at a loss. Is it just to tax a struggling farmer while letting multinational mining giants off the hook with tax breaks as they cart away Zambia’s mineral wealth

We, the Economic Freedom Fighters, recognize that expanding the tax base is crucial for our country’s future. But expansion must not come at the expense of the very Zambians whose sweat fuels this nation. It is an insult to ask local businesses, who already face high costs and market challenges, to shoulder even more—while the mining sector is granted undeserved concessions and outsized profits. This is a textbook example of misplaced priorities and government incompetence.

The unintended consequences are already clear:
• More rural poverty and hunger as smallholder farmers pay taxes even in bad years;
• Plummeting morale among small business owners, leading to closures, job losses, and worsening economic hardship;
• A hostile environment for genuine economic diversification, with only the big players benefiting and ordinary Zambians pushed to the margins.

This is a failure of leadership, vision, and empathy from the UPND government — a government that promised economic growth and inclusive prosperity but instead delivers policies that stifle the hardworking masses.

Under an EFF-led government, policies would put the Zambian business owner first. We would create a thriving business environment for small and medium enterprises, remove punitive taxes like MAT on turnover, ensure sector-sensitive tax measures, and hold multinational mining companies truly accountable.

EFF believes in empowering Zambians, supporting innovation, and protecting the engine of non-mining growth—the farmer, the trader, the manufacturer.

Zambia’s economic liberation will not come from squeezing the lifeblood out of its SMEs and smallholder farmers. It will come from visionary leadership that protects and uplifts its people, unlocking the entrepreneurial spirit of our nation.

We call for the immediate revocation of this damaging piece of legislation. Let us create a Zambia where sweat and effort are rewarded—not punished.

Wherever we want to go our feet will take us there.

CF officials unleash on Muhabi: Let him debate with us instead not Kalaba

Citizens First ( CF) national mobilisation chairman Henry Chilombo has told Zambia We Want (ZWW) spokesperson Muhabi Lungu that party leader Harry Kalaba is fully occupied with the greater responsibility of preparing the party for a decisive victory in the 2026 general elections.

And national youth chairman Maxwell Chongu said the opposition political party leaders must watch Lungu closely saying he may just be a UPND surrogate they had been looking for all this while posing a threat to opposition unity ahead of 2026.

In response to Lungu’s recent challenge for a public debate with Kalaba, Chilombo said if Lungu wanted a debate, he could have it with him as the national mobilisation chairman.

Zambian Lives at Risk: The Peril of a Government’s Dismissive Stance

Zambian Lives at Risk: The Peril of a Government’s Dismissive Stance.

The alarming health alert which was issued by the United States government, which led to the immediate evacuation of its personnel from Kitwe, Chambishi, and surrounding areas, has cast a harsh light on a painful truth. While the U.S. acted swiftly to protect its citizens from a toxic mine spill, the Zambian government’s response has been marked by a dangerous and dismissive stance , raising a critical question: is the health of Zambians less important than that of foreign nationals?

The crisis began in February 2025 when a tailings dam at Sino Metals Leach Zambia burst, releasing a torrent of highly acidic and toxic waste. The sheer scale of the disaster was staggering, with an estimated 1.5 million liters of effluent poisoning the Mwambashi River, a tributary of the vital Kafue River, which is a key water source for a significant portion of the country. This catastrophic event was a clear and present danger to aquatic life and the livelihoods of communities downstream.
Initially, the government, through the Zambia

Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), acknowledged the spill and issued an environmental restoration order. However, a full six months later, an independent assessment revealed the situation was far more dire than initially reported. The spill was estimated to be 30 times worse, with about 1.5 million tons of toxic sludge containing dangerous levels of arsenic, cyanide, and uranium. The U.S. Embassy’s health alert was based on these new findings, which also warned that the contaminants could become airborne, posing an even wider threat.

Instead of heeding the U.S. warning and issuing a national health alert, the Zambian government chose to dismiss it as unfounded. The Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, and the Minister of Water Development, Collins Nzovu, publicly stated that the water was safe and met international standards. In a now-infamous and deeply concerning act, some officials appeared on state media, drinking water from the affected area in a misguided attempt to prove their claims. That was not a moment of reassuring leadership but a painful display of disregard for public safety. The dismissive stance by UPND on the matter, puts political image before the well-being of the people, and has created a perilous situation.

When a foreign entity provides an evidence-based warning and takes decisive action, while your own government responds with shallow acts of defiance, it erodes trust and sends a clear message that citizens’ lives are secondary. The government’s failure to inform and protect its people is not just a policy misstep; it is a profound betrayal of its most basic responsibility.

The Sino Metals spill is more than just a mining accident; it is a life-threatening health crisis that has been dangerously downplayed. By failing to act decisively and transparently, the government has placed countless Zambian lives in jeopardy. Communities along the affected rivers are not just statistics; they are families who deserve a clear plan for clean water, proper medical testing, and assurance that their government values their health and safety.

The government must urgently come forward with a comprehensive plan to protect its people, hold the polluting company accountable, and ensure that such a disaster never happens again. It is a time for genuine leadership, not political theatrics. As the “Struggle Continues,” the plea from Zambians is clear: our lives matter too. It is time for the government to take responsibility and act accordingly.

RESPONSE TO REV. NDHLOVU, UPND HAS RESTORED ORDER, UNITY, AND THE RULE OF LAW

RESPONSE TO REV. NDHLOVU, UPND HAS RESTORED ORDER, UNITY, AND THE RULE OF LAW

By Tobbius C. Hamunkoyo-LLB

Rev. Ndhlovu’s call for unity is welcome, but it must be grounded in truth. Under PF, Zambia was at its lowest point, cadres controlled bus stops and markets, police officers were beaten in public, and violence became a daily tool of politics.

Whole regions were mocked and discriminated against, corruption scandals multiplied, and the Kwacha collapsed to record lows. Opposition leaders, journalists, and civil society could not freely operate, while ordinary citizens lived in fear of abductions, gassing, and harassment by political thugs. That was the Zambia PF left behind.

Today, under UPND, things are different. Cadres have been removed from markets and bus stops, law and order has returned, and the police now operate without cadre interference.

There is no longer violence against officers or the humiliation of state institutions by political thugs.

Tribalism has been addressed through inclusive appointments, with all tribes represented in government, and no group being victimized.

President Hakainde Hichilema has deliberately chosen unity, showing that Zambia belongs to all 73 tribes equally. This is a sharp contrast to PF’s divisive politics of hate and exclusion.

Opposition leaders such as Sean Tembo, Harry Kalaba, Fred M’membe, KBF, and Saboi Imboela can now hold press briefings and conferences without cadres storming the venues to beat them up.

Public gatherings are no longer disrupted by political thugs, and opposition leaders walk home freely after criticizing government. Under PF, such freedoms were almost impossible, with opposition rallies banned, radio stations threatened, and the media silenced.

Today, civic space has been restored, and Zambians can express themselves without fear of violence. This is the essence of democracy, and it is one of UPND’s greatest achievements in only four years.

Yes, challenges remain, but the truth is clear, PF left behind violence, corruption, division, and economic collapse, while UPND is rebuilding the country on the pillars of peace, unity, and fairness. Zambia is no longer a country of cadres and fear, but one where citizens, regardless of tribe or political party, can enjoy their rights. If unity is to save our democracy, let us acknowledge honestly that PF destroyed that unity, and it is UPND that is now restoring it.

RESPONSES TO THE PRESS QUERIES ON ALLEGATIONS OF NEPOTISM, FAVORITISM
AND INSTITUTIONAL SABOTAGE.

RESPONSES TO THE PRESS QUERIES ON ALLEGATIONS OF NEPOTISM, FAVORITISM
AND INSTITUTIONAL SABOTAGE.

Responses to your press queries dated 14th August, 2025 from News Diggers and 19th August,2025 from Muvi TV, regarding allegations of Nepotism, Favouritism, and Institutional Sabotage.

For the sake of consistency and clarity, management has decided to provide
one consolidated response to both media houses.

In responding, we wish to reiterate that the Office of the Public Protector
remains guided by its constitutional and statutory mandate, and by the
principles of integrity, impartiality, and accountability. Our responses will
therefore address each of the issues raised, in the order they were presented

1. Favoritism- That certain Members of staff have been placed on “holding’’
for extended periods undermining the institution’s ability to carry out its
mandate.

ANSWER: The Office would have appreciated you providing the details of the affected Officers to enable it provide an appropriate response.

2. Nepotism – That individuals related to you have been appointed to key and
junior positions.
ANSWER: The allegation of nepotism is not just untrue but also unfounded and
malicious. Note that the Office of the Public Protector does not appoint its staff.

All members of staff are appointed by the Civil Service Commission through Public Service Management Division.

The Office of the Public Protector does not have authority to employ, promote, transfer or dismiss its members of staff.

The said powers are vested in the Civil Service Commission and the Public Service Management Division.

Therefore, all members of staff of the Office of the Public are employees of the Civil Service Commission. You may wish to refer your query to the appointing authority.

3. Sexual Harassment Cases – That Chief Administrator Mr. Kebby Hakalima and Senior Human Resource Officer Mr. Malama Chishala were suspended in February 2025 following sexual harassment complaints supported by evidence, but no disciplinary action was taken.

ANSWER: To start with, I wish to state that the Office of the Public Protector has a zero-tolerance policy to Sexual Harassment matters. When these allegations came up, the Office called for a meeting with all members of staff requesting them to submit complaints.

However, the complaints that were received were anonymous which made it difficult to institute disciplinary action as no one
came forward to formally complain or willing to give evidence to that effect.

The Office took the following immediate measures:

1. Realising the sensitive nature of the allegations, the knowledge gap that
officers may have, and the difficulties that one may have to open up to
fellow members of staff of issues of victimization, the Office engaged the
Gender Division at Cabinet Office.

A Gender expert came and had
engagements with all Officers at the Office of the Public Protector.

The meeting was attended by all members of staff and senior Management.

The said Expert made an invitation to any one who may be a victim of any
form of gender or sexual harassment to engage her in Confidence.

The Office never received any further feedback from the Expert.

2. The Office developed and drafted standard operating procedures for the
OPP

3. The Office developed and drafted the Code of Conduct for the OPP.

4. The Office has continued to engage female members of staff to come
forward with evidence against the mentioned individuals.

Lastly, I wish to state that there are various reasons that affect the performance of any government institution.

The above allegations have no bearing on the performance of this institution.

The Office of the Public protector, like any other government institution, grapples with insufficient funding, staffing levels, infrastructure and many other related issues that affect the performance of the institution.

You may wish to look at the Parliamentary report of the
committee on cabinet affairs on the review of the management and
operations of the office of the public protector presented to parliament, that
highlighted some of the challenges faced by the office of the public protector in relation to its performance.

RESPONSE TO DR. MBITA CHITALA’S CALL FOR A NATIONAL CONSULTATIVE CONFERENCE

RESPONSE TO DR. MBITA CHITALA’S CALL FOR A NATIONAL CONSULTATIVE CONFERENCE

By Tobbius C . Hamunkoyo-LLB

This is a long article, written to fully and honestly address the issues raised by Dr. Mbita Chitala. To every genuine Zambian who wishes to understand the truth about where our country has come from, where it is now, and where it is going, I encourage you to patiently read through this response.

I begin by appreciating Dr. Mbita Chitala’s consistent engagement with matters of national importance. As a veteran of Zambia’s political life, his voice is valuable in shaping national debate.

However, in order to move forward constructively, we must all commit to truthfulness, honesty, and historical accuracy. When we speak of governance challenges, we must not erase or sanitize the past.

Dr. Chitala calls for a National Consultative Conference (NCC) to address Zambia’s current challenges. While national dialogue is healthy in a democracy, his submission falls short because it overlooks the reality of where our nation was in 2021 and the progress made since then.

For such a call to carry credibility, Dr. Chitala and others who served under the Patriotic Front (PF) must come with clean hands and acknowledge the destruction that PF left behind.

It is a notorious fact that the PF administration left Zambia on the verge of collapse. It presided over unprecedented levels of corruption, with billions of kwacha lost through inflated contracts, ghost suppliers, and outright theft of public resources. The Honeybee scandal, the fire tender scandal, and the misuse of Eurobond funds stand out as painful examples. Reckless and non-transparent borrowing ballooned Zambia’s debt to unsustainable levels, pushing the country into default in 2020. This crippled the economy and deprived ordinary citizens of essential services.

It is also undisputed fact that under PF, the rule of law collapsed. Political violence, police brutality, cadreism in bus stations and markets, and media intimidation became the order of the day. State institutions were captured and turned into political weapons, used to persecute opponents while shielding corrupt officials. To make matters worse, the economy suffered heavily, inflation soared, the kwacha collapsed, and unemployment rose sharply. PF politics was also characterized by tribalism, favoritism, and divisive rhetoric, which eroded the unity of our country.

This is the Zambia that the UPND inherited in 2021, a country bruised, divided, and bankrupt. Against this background, the UPND administration under President Hakainde Hichilema has made significant progress in four years. While challenges remain, the nation is far better off today than it was under PF.

On the economic front, Zambia has successfully restructured its $13.03 billion external debt, restoring international financial credibility. Inflation, which had once soared uncontrollably, has been reduced, and while the kwacha still faces global  in the economy.

The UPND has also restored the rule of law and freedoms. Cadres have been removed from bus stations and markets, giving traders space to conduct business freely. Citizens now enjoy freedom of expression, association, and assembly without fear of political violence. The judiciary, police, and investigative wings have been allowed greater independence, unlike in the PF era when they were heavily politicized.

In the fight against corruption, the UPND has shown commitment by prosecuting high-profile cases and beginning to recover stolen assets. Procurement systems have been tightened to prevent abuse. This stands in sharp contrast to the impunity that flourished under PF.

One of the most transformative reforms has been the increase of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) from K1.6 million under PF to K36 million per constituency. This has decentralized resources in an unprecedented way, enabling youths, women, and community groups to access loans and grants that are creating jobs and businesses across the country.

In education and health, progress has been remarkable. Over 45,000 teachers and 16,000 health workers have been recruited in four years, the largest recruitment drive in Zambia’s history. The free education policy has lifted the burden off poor families and boosted school enrolment. Health facilities across the country are also receiving more staff and supplies than before.

The agriculture sector has also seen improvements, with timely distribution of inputs under FISP being prioritized despite global challenges. Government is promoting diversification beyond maize, with increased investment in irrigation and cash crops to secure long-term food security and export surplus to Congo DR our potential market.

Infrastructure development continues but with more focus on sustainability. Unlike PF’s debt-driven approach, the UPND is targeting economic roads, rural electrification, and renewable energy projects to reduce load-shedding. At the same time, Zambia’s international standing has improved, attracting investment and development partnerships that had been lost due to PF’s reckless governance.

Dr. Chitala’s concerns about poverty, unemployment, and high cost of living are valid,  these are real struggles citizens face daily. However, to suggest that Zambia today is worse than under PF is to ignore the catastrophic mess PF left behind. It is misleading and unfair to compare today’s Zambia with an imagined version of PF governance that never existed.

If Dr. Chitala genuinely seeks dialogue, he must also acknowledge these truths. National reconciliation requires honesty. It requires that those who served in PF admit the failures of that regime, even as they call for improvements today. Only then can such calls inspire credibility and unity.

In conclusion, the UPND has not solved every problem in four years, no government can. But it has moved Zambia from the ruins of corruption, debt, and lawlessness towards a path of recovery, stability, and hope. The focus now should be on consolidating these gains, accelerating job creation, and lowering the cost of living.

Dr. Chitala’s experience is valuable, but his message must be grounded in truth. Zambia cannot afford selective memory. We must build on the progress of today, not romanticize the failures of yesterday.

UNDERSTANDING THE CRITICISM OF PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA

UNDERSTANDING THE CRITICISM OF PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA

By Timmy

In the current political landscape of Zambia, President Hakainde Hichilema often faces intense scrutiny and criticism. While debates around leadership are common in democratic societies, it’s crucial to explore the underlying reasons for the vitriol directed at President Hichilema, focusing on the motivations of his detractors.

A significant number of critics are former associates within the United Party for National Development (UPND) or members of the previous government. Their criticism often stems from personal grievances or a sense of betrayal rather than a genuine policy disagreement. Many of these individuals may feel threatened by the success of a leader they once worked with but could not support effectively in achieving common goals. Their inability to meet the targets set during their tenure reflects poorly on their dedication to national progress, often leading to resentment towards a current leader who is successfully navigating these challenges.

Furthermore, there are political figures who, motivated by past affiliations with the previous government, utilize their platforms to undermine President Hichilema, often driven by self-interest rather than a commitment to national welfare. This behavior is indicative of a broader trend where political loyalty is overshadowed by personal gain.

It is essential to recognize that criticism from those who prioritize personal agendas can cloud public discourse. The attacks on President Hichilema often do not represent the views of the larger Zambian populace, many of whom appreciate his commitment to national development and integrity. Understanding the motivations behind these criticisms can foster a more balanced perspective, allowing for constructive dialogue about Zambia’s future.

The animosity directed at President Hakainde Hichilema often reflects personal grievances of those who feel threatened by his leadership rather than legitimate policy critiques. As Zambians, it is vital to focus on what truly matters: the nation’s progress and development.

A PROFESSIONAL RESPONSE TO MR. CHITALA’S NCC CALL

A PROFESSIONAL RESPONSE TO MR. CHITALA’S NCC CALL

By Timmy

The recent article published on Zambia Whistleblower, titled “Chitala is Offering UPND Chance to Hear People’s Voice”, seeks to portray the government of President Hakainde Hichilema as dismissive of national concerns. Nothing could be further from the truth.

We wish to place the record straight for the benefit of the Zambian people.

1. On Governance and Rule of Law

Mr. Chitala alleges that since 2021 Zambia has experienced “political fragmentation, abuse of office, and a breakdown of the rule of law.” Yet, under President Hichilema’s leadership, the opposite is true. Institutions of governance have been strengthened, the judiciary has operated independently, and citizens today enjoy more freedom of expression than at any time in the last decade. The President has repeatedly emphasized the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law as the cornerstone of governance.

2. On the Economy and Cost of Living

Yes, Zambians are feeling the global economic pressures. But the government has been consistent in tackling the debt crisis it inherited, stabilizing the currency, and putting in place long-term solutions that will grow jobs, increase food production, and lower the cost of essentials. Today, international partners are working with Zambia because they see a government that is serious about transparency, accountability, and responsible economic management.

3. On Corruption and Nepotism

The UPND government came to power on a promise to fight corruption and end cronyism. Unlike in the past, when corruption was swept under the carpet, today investigative wings are free to act without political interference. Stolen public assets are being pursued, and a new culture of merit-based appointments is being entrenched across public service.

4. On the Call for a New Constitution

The administration is not opposed to constitutional reforms. What the government has insisted on is that any amendment process must be inclusive, transparent, and not rushed. This is why wide consultation is being prioritized—to avoid the mistakes of past regimes that pushed partisan constitutions. President Hichilema’s pledge is to deliver a people-driven constitution that will stand the test of time.

5. On National Unity and Security

Mr. Chitala’s call for unity is welcome but let us acknowledge progress. Tribalism, nepotism, and provincialism have no place in the new Zambia. The President has consistently appointed Zambians from all regions to key positions, proving that inclusivity is not rhetoric but practice. The professionalization of the defence and security services is ongoing, ensuring that loyalty is to the Constitution, not to partisan interests.

Zambia does not need rhetoric designed to discredit progress. What the nation needs is for all stakeholders including elder statesmen like Dr. Chitala to acknowledge the gains being made while contributing constructively to dialogue. The government remains open to engagement through established democratic platforms, but it rejects attempts to mislead the public with claims that are inconsistent with the reality on the ground.

President Hakainde Hichilema was elected by the Zambian people on the promise of change and that change is happening. Slowly but surely, Zambia is on the right path: towards stability, opportunity, and unity.

We urge citizens to continue participating in national debates with facts, not fear. Together, we are building a better Zambia.

RESPONSE TO Mr. KASONDE MWENDA C.  ECONOMIC FREEDOM FIGHTERS (EFF)

RESPONSE TO Mr. KASONDE MWENDA C.  ECONOMIC FREEDOM FIGHTERS (EFF)

By Timmy

We acknowledge the concerns raised by Mr. Kasonde Mwenda regarding the introduction of the Minimum Alternative Tax (MAT) by the United Party for National Development (UPND) government. At the outset, it is crucial to reiterate that the UPND administration, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema, remains firmly committed to fostering an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient economy one that uplifts smallholder farmers, entrepreneurs, and all citizens alike.

The introduction of the Minimum Alternative Tax is a carefully considered measure designed not to burden our hardworking citizens, but to enhance the fairness and efficiency of Zambia’s tax system. MAT targets economic activities that often benefit from tax exemptions or avoidance, ensuring everyone makes a fair contribution to national development. This is essential for sustaining public services, infrastructure development, and poverty alleviation programs that directly benefit the most vulnerable including rural farmers and small business operators.

It is important to clarify that the MAT is not intended to tax losses but to create a balanced revenue framework that reduces the dependency on debt and volatile revenues. The UPND government understands the challenges faced by small-scale farmers and businesses, and has simultaneously implemented complementary support policies, including subsidized inputs, access to credit, and market facilitation initiatives to reduce costs and encourage profitability.

Moreover, the government continues to engage with all sectors to ensure tax policies reflect economic realities and promote diversification beyond mining. We recognize the importance of multinational companies paying their fair share, and the Ministry of Finance is actively reforming tax administration to bring transparency and equity across all industries.

The UPND government stands for economic justice, job creation, and empowering every Zambian to thrive. Our reforms aim to build a robust economy that is less dependent on a single sector and more inclusive of smallholders and SMEs.

We call on all Zambians, especially our supporters, to engage constructively by sharing their views, and contributing to a national conversation on how best to build the future we all deserve.

Together, under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership, we will continue working tirelessly to create a Zambia where every citizen’s hard work is rewarded and where prosperity is shared by all.

MALAWI GOES AHEAD OF ZAMBIA :Thom Mpinganjira Becomes the First Malawian Billionaire in US Dollars

MALAWI GOES AHEAD OF ZAMBIA

Thom Mpinganjira Becomes the First Malawian Billionaire in US Dollars

Malawian banking titan Thom Mpinganjira has crossed an extraordinary milestone, officially becoming the country’s first billionaire in US dollars after a meteoric surge in FDH Bank shares catapulted his fortune to 1.12 billion.

According to Billionaires.Africa, Mpinganjira, who holds an indirect stake in FDH Bank, has seen the bank’s market value soar to 2 billion, thanks to a jaw-dropping 365% rally in share price in 2025.

What’s driving the surge? Record profits, swelling customer deposits, and shareholder-friendly dividends.

The leap places Mpinganjira ahead of long-time rival financier Hitesh Anadkat, firmly cementing FDH Bank’s status as one of Malawi’s most valuable companies.

For the man who spent over two decades building FDH from the ground up, this is more than a financial windfall, it’s the crowning achievement of a career defined by vision, grit, and relentless ambition.

Beyond FDH, Mpinganjira also owns Ekhaya Foods and Farms and recently acquired a commercial bank in Mozambique.

We are now food secure, enough to export to other countries – Hichilema

We are now food secure, enough to export to other countries – Hichilema

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says Zambia is now food secure and has enough food to export to other countries.

This comes after one of the worst droughts in the country’s history, which engulfed Zambia in early 2024 and led President Hichilema to declare a national emergency on February 29 last year.

Speaking during the Kulamba Traditional Ceremony in Katete yesterday, President Hichilema said he wanted the country to continue doing efficient agriculture that takes into account the negative effects of climate change.

He commended farmers for remaining resilient and producing a bumper harvest this year, even after a difficult farming season.

“We are now food secure. Agriculture is very important. We celebrate our farmers for working hard to feed our country.”

“We now are food secure and we have excess for export into our neighbouring countries. And we want to continue doing that. We want to continue doing our agriculture with efficiently higher yields productivity but also taking account of negative climate damaging activities,” he said.

He explained that farmers needed to embrace irrigation and water harvesting mechanisms to cushion the country against droughts.

“We want irrigation agriculture through water harvesting technology mechanisation to take root in our country, such that drought or no drought, we should have food for our people.”

“I want to indicate that we are conscious of climate change and we will work together to mitigate negative effects of climate change,” assured the President.

He urged citizens to stop harmful practices such as bush burning, warning that such activities damage the ozone layer and in turn affects the rainfall pattern.

Rwanda welcomes first group of migrants deported from US under new agreement

Rwanda welcomes first group of migrants deported from US under new agreement

Seven migrants deported from the United States arrived in Rwanda in mid-August, marking the first transfer under a controversial agreement between the two nations, Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo announced Thursday.

The deal, finalized earlier this month, allows Rwanda to accept up to 250 deportees as part of the Trump administration’s push to relocate undocumented migrants to third countries.

Makolo confirmed that the initial group of seven vetted migrants is being supported by an international organization, with visits from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Rwandan social services. “Three of the individuals have expressed a desire to return to their home countries, while four wish to stay and build lives in Rwanda,” she said, adding that those staying will receive workforce training, healthcare, and accommodation to aid their integration.

The agreement, which echoes a failed 2022 UK-Rwanda migrant deal, has drawn scrutiny from human rights groups. Critics warn that deporting migrants to third countries like Rwanda, which has faced allegations of human rights abuses, risks violating international law if individuals face potential harm. Rwanda, however, maintains it is a safe destination, citing its history of hosting refugees and its post-1994 genocide recovery under President Paul Kagame.

Rwanda is the third African nation, after South Sudan and Eswatini, to accept US deportees. The US has also secured a similar deal with Uganda, which stipulates that deportees must not have criminal records or be unaccompanied minors. Details of Rwanda’s arrangement, including any financial incentives, remain undisclosed, though a Rwandan official hinted at a US grant, according to Reuters.

The Trump administration defends the policy as necessary to address illegal immigration, particularly when home countries refuse to accept deportees. However, the secretive nature of these deals and Rwanda’s human rights record continue to fuel debate over the ethics and legality of third-country deportations.

Dana White confirms White House UFC event ‘is on’ despite people calling out ‘trashy’ event

Dana White’s White House UFC event is going ahead; despite the backlash it received online.

President Donald Trump’s plan for America’s 250th birthday isn’t going to be what most people expect.

Instead of white halls and luxury meals, it’s going to be a little more…violent.

Gone are the days where presidential events included speeches and maybe some soft jazz or an orchestra.

Instead, what people can expect is two men fighting to the teeth via a televised scrap.

Independence Day in 2026 will see a UFC event out on the White House grounds, as Trump promised to organise something for everyone to enjoy.

His decision to host a UFC fight at the White House has left people divided on how to feel.

Some think it’s a ‘trashy’ event, whilst others believe it to be different and exciting.

On 12 August, the UFC’s president and CEO Dana White shared it is ‘definitely going to happen’ on 4 July 2026, as he told CBS: “I talked to [Trump] last night and I’m flying out there at the end of this month.

“I’m going to sit down and walk him through all of the plans and the renderings, and we’re going to start deciding what he wants and what he doesn’t want.

“But yeah, it’s definitely going to happen…July 4th, 250th birthday of the United States of America, live on CBS from the White House.”

However, commenters were vocal about their thoughts.

Taking to social media, one person said: “Welcome to modern day Rome. A new colosseum in the shape of an octagon.”

Another wrote: “You are turning the White House into a circus.”

A third added: “What classless person would disgrace the White House like this?”

Others were a bit more lenient with the plan, with one stating: “This is so awesome.”

Another said: “UFC at the White House is going to be one for the history books!”

Regardless of the backlash, White has stuck true to his plans, as he took to Instagram Live where he said he ‘got it done’ on 28 August and also promised to release more details about what the event will include.

“It was a great day. I’m about to take off here from Washington, D.C.,” White said in his video. “The White House fight is on. I will have more details on that in the next couple weeks. We got it done today.”

As per the plans, the White House will host a UFC event, with White telling The Wall Street Journal: “My Octagon is like 25,000 pounds.

“I don’t give a s**t if there’s only one seat at this thing. This is so monumental and historical and just such a cool thing.

“All I care about is the Octagon on the lawn and the fight happening with the backdrop being the White House and the Washington Monument.”

In light of South Park’s rampage against Trump, Redditors think this event might just lead to another episode in honour of the POTUS.

One person said: “That South Park episode bout to be fire.”

Others joked that the fight should involve world leaders, with one joking: “We want all the presidents and prime ministers from each country fighting each other. Winner gets true champion of the world.”

Someone else believes society began to decline as soon as Harambe died, stating: “If we could just go back and save that damn gorilla…”

If anything, it’s going to make for a very interesting time on social media.

McKenzie responds to criticism over support for late actress Nandi Nyembe

McKenzie responds to criticism over support for late actress Nandi Nyembe

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has pushed back against criticism that he neglected veteran actress Nandi Nyembe, who died on August 23 at the age of 75.

Nyembe, celebrated for her roles in Yizo Yizo, Zone 14 and Adulting, passed away after battling health and financial difficulties, sparking debate over how South Africa treats its arts legends.

McKenzie came under fire from the arts community and social media users, with the Unemployed and Unashamed Movement accusing him of failing to support Nyembe while she was alive. The movement demanded that he disclose government spending on her memorial and present a plan to assist struggling artists.

Responding on social media, McKenzie insisted he had offered direct support to Nyembe and her family. “Upon hearing of the dire situation of Nyembe, I immediately sent her R20,000. She thanked me profusely,” he said.

“Upon being notified of her death I took first flight out of Cape Town to visit the children. I was warmly received. The daughter seemed very concerned about the body of her mom at state morgue, I made a few calls and body was moved to mortuary that will bury her, without anyone asking me, I gave daughter another 10k for cakes and tea for guest who will visit house.”

“I offered my children’s money, not the department’s, to assist more. I can’t be told by people who only rock up when cameras are present,” McKenzie declared, dismissing accusations of neglect as “abuse and lies.”

The controversy has reignited calls for systemic reform in the creative sector. Siphesihle Shabalala of the Unemployed and Unashamed Movement said, “Mama Nandi died unemployed, unassisted, and unseen by the system. We demand policies that ensure artists can live off their legacies.”

Meanwhile, Jack Devnarain, chairperson of the SA Guild of Actors, highlighted Nyembe’s professional ethos. “She didn’t want handouts; she wanted a script,” he said, urging urgency in finalizing the long-delayed Performers’ Protection Amendment Bill, which could secure royalty rights for actors.

As tributes pour in for Nyembe, McKenzie has vowed to add

Ramaphosa launches G20 taskforce on global wealth inequality

Ramaphosa launches G20 taskforce on global wealth inequality

President Cyril Ramaphosa has launched a G20 experts taskforce to examine global wealth inequality, the first initiative of its kind within the grouping.

The six-member panel, chaired by Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, will investigate how widening disparities affect growth, poverty, and multilateral cooperation. The taskforce will present its recommendations at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg this November.

Ramaphosa said inequality “undermines dignity and the chance for a better future,” pointing to challenges exposed by the  pandemic and the rising cost of living.

Other members include Winnie Byanyima, head of UNAIDS, and renowned economist Jayati Ghosh, representing a diverse range of global expertise.

According to the World Inequality Report, the poorest 50% of the world held just 2% of global wealth in 2021, while the richest 10% controlled 76%, underscoring the urgency of the initiative.

UK govt bans over 100 jobs from foreign recruitment

The United Kingdom Government has unveiled sweeping new restrictions on overseas recruitment, blocking more than 100 occupations from being filled by foreign workers in a bid to reduce net migration.

The Home Office announced the decision in a statement on X on Saturday, August 30, describing it as part of efforts to prioritise British workers and reshape the country’s visa system.

“Cutting net migration means getting the fundamentals right. More than 100 occupations are no longer eligible for overseas recruitment – opening up more jobs for British workers. A fairer, skills-focused system is now taking shape,” the statement read.

UK bans over 100 jobs from foreign recruitment to curb migration

The move is the latest immigration reform under Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who came into office on July 5, 2024, after Labour’s landslide victory, replacing Conservative leader Rishi Sunak.

While ministers argue the changes will create opportunities for UK residents, critics have warned the restrictions could deepen labour shortages, particularly in sectors such as health and social care that have relied heavily on overseas staff.

The Home Office has yet to publish the full list of affected occupations.

US federal appeals court has struck down most of the tariffs imposed by Trump

A US federal appeals court has struck down most of the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, ruling they were illegal and beyond his presidential powers.

The decision, delivered in a 7-4 vote by the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, rejected Trump’s claim that the tariffs were justified under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

The judges ruled that the IEEPA does not grant the president authority to impose tariffs, describing the levies as “invalid as contrary to law.” They emphasised that setting tariffs remains a core power of Congress, noting that the 1977 law was not intended to give presidents unlimited authority over trade policy.

The ruling affects Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs, which applied broadly to countries worldwide, as well as tariffs placed on China, Mexico and Canada. It does not affect levies introduced under other authorities, such as those on steel and aluminium.

The decision followed lawsuits from small businesses and US states, who challenged the tariffs after Trump’s 2024 executive orders imposed a baseline 10% tariff on nearly all countries and additional reciprocal tariffs. The New York-based Court of International Trade had previously ruled the tariffs unlawful, but that ruling was stayed pending appeal.

Trump criticised the ruling on his Truth Social platform, calling the court “highly partisan” and warning that removing the tariffs would “literally destroy the United States of America.” He argued the tariffs were essential for economic strength and national security.

Lawyers for the administration had warned that overturning the tariffs could trigger a financial collapse similar to the 1929 stock market crash, arguing the levies were critical to protecting US security and foreign policy interests.

The ruling, which takes effect on 14 October unless overturned, is expected to be appealed to the US Supreme Court. The case could become a major test of presidential powers, as the top court has increasingly struck down sweeping executive actions not explicitly authorised by Congress. With six of its nine justices appointed by Republicans, including three by Trump himself, the Supreme Court’s eventual stance could reshape the limits of presidential authority on trade.

Trump administration’s deploys warships near Venezuela’s coast

A US guided missile cruiser, the USS Lake Erie, crossed the Panama Canal from the Pacific to the Caribbean on Friday night, August 29, as part of the Trump administration’s deployment of warships near Venezuela’s coast.

AFP reporters observed the 567-foot-long vessel, which displaces 9,800 tons, passing through one of the canal’s locks at around 9:30 p.m. local time before heading east toward the Atlantic. The ship had been moored for two days at the Port of Rodman near the Pacific entrance of the canal.

Washington has framed the naval deployment in the southern Caribbean, near Venezuelan territorial waters, as an anti-drug trafficking operation. US authorities have accused Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of leading a drug cartel and recently doubled the bounty for his capture to $50 million.

“I didn’t know the ship was going to pass… I was surprised,” said Alfredo Cedeno, a health technician who photographed the cruiser.

Caracas has responded by deploying 15,000 security forces to the Colombian border and announcing patrols of its territorial waters using drones and navy ships. Maduro also claimed he had mobilised more than four million militia members in response to what he described as US threats.

The deployment comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Caracas, but the US has made no public threat to invade Venezuela. Observers say the movement of the USS Lake Erie is intended to demonstrate US naval capability and readiness in the region while supporting anti-narcotics operations.

The cruiser, which is based in San Diego, California, is one of several warships the US has positioned near Venezuela, signalling a firm stance on drug trafficking concerns while testing Caracas’ military response.

Young Thug Continues To Defend Himself Amid Flurry Of Snitching Allegations

Young Thug and the YSL collective have been dominating headlines over these last couple of days thanks to a resurfaced police interrogation.

Young Thug is currently under an immense amount of fire right now. It all stems from a recently resurfaced audio clip from about two years ago. In it, the YSL boss appears to name drop Peewee Roscoe during a two-hour police interrogation. It’s been ringing of on social media these last two days with users labeling him a snitch.

It’s worth noting that Roscoe has been accused of allegedly shooting up Lil Wayne’s tour bus in 2015.

However, Thugger believes that people reacting negatively to it have it all wrong. “They didn’t play my interrogation video in court cause I helped my brada #Ratwhere?” he tweeted in an immediate response. That has done nothing to slow down the accusations, though, and it’s got a lot his affiliates involved, too. YSL Woody, Ralo, Peewee, and YSL Duke have since traded shots in some shape or form.

Outsiders like Charleston White and Wack 100 have also added their perspectives into the mix. In summary, they both believe that Young Thug ratted out Peewee. However, the latter has cleared him of any wrongdoing.

“That’s what you’re supposed to do. When you go in the interrogation room, that’s what you do. You tell ’em ‘We sold Dwayne Carter weed.’ What the fck is wrong with you? A statement is this right here…. He did what a tax-paying citizen do, a real street n***. He kept it silent, kept it overly real. Really, tried to pull me out the hole.”

Instead, he’s accused Gunna, Ralo, and Duke as the real rats.

Fat Joe calls himself the “realest rapper to ever live” after Tupac

Fat Joe made this wild remark on his podcast with Jadakiss, which recently hosted Ghostface Killah after releasing “Supreme Clientele 2.”

Fat Joe may still get some pushback from hip-hop peers every once in a while, but he also gets a lot of respect from the culture as well. However, many fans think he probably exaggerated his assessment of his status during a recent interview with Ghostface Killah on his podcast with Jadakiss.

For those unaware, GFK was on Joe & Jada to promote his new album Supreme Clientele 2, and during Joe’s introduction for Ghost, he made quite the bold claim. “I’ma admit something, I think I’m the realest rapper to ever live. If I keep it a buck with you, besides Tupac, I really believe that. But I want no beef with Wu-Tang Clan,” he remarked.

Whether or not you agree with Joey Crack’s assessment here, a lot of folks aren’t buying this one bit. Of course, there’s a difference between the perception of your “realness,” what that realness even is, and what you actually do in the streets. But in the replies down below, a lot of folks doubted this idea. We’ll see if he ever backs it up with receipts.

Elsewhere, Fat Joe spoke on alleged snitches and said he can’t support them. Still, he did give a shout out to the new Gunna album and brought up this discrepancy.

“My thing is now, you got some guys that are the hottest guys in the game. Rats,” Joe said. “Like I get a phone call from somebody. He says, ‘Yo man, you got to check this album out.’ […] Listen, ever since I assumed you a rat, your people ain’t f***ing with you no more. I’m off you no matter what you do. I never went to see this guy one time in my life after he ratted because he violated the code. I’ve been through this in my life. And so to see it so acceptable how everybody’s acting like, ‘Yo, it’s OK, it’s no problem, it’s good music. […] Let’s separate the art form from what it is.'”

Meanwhile, Fat Joe’s lawsuit for various alleged crimes is still a point of contention. We will see if he successfully disproves it or if it will come back to bite him in court.
