CIVIL SOCIETY CONCERNED AT RECENT REVELATIONS EXPOSING ALARMING WEAKNESSES IN ZAMBIA’S CORRUPTION FIGHT

CIVIL SOCIETY CONCERNED AT RECENT REVELATIONS EXPOSING ALARMING WEAKNESSES IN ZAMBIA’S CORRUPTION FIGHT

A Consortium of 11 Civil Society Organizations on governance has expressed concern and outrage at recent revelations that expose alarming weaknesses in Zambia’s fight against corruption.

Consortium Chairperson Isaac Mwanza says these developments severely undermine public confidence in the country’s key governance institutions and is not helping President Hakainde Hichilema to advance his commitment that there shall be no sacred cows in the fight against corruption.

Mr. Mwanza cites an independent audit which has revealed that the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency -ZAMMSA- procured essential drugs at an outrageous 1,600% markup without any attempt to negotiate prices.

He says this development constitutes an abuse of public resources, particularly in a sector as vital as health care, stating that these are funds not only sourced from Zambian taxpayers but also generously contributed by cooperating partners who support Zambia’s health system.

Mr. Mwanza adds that the procurement of life-saving medicines at such inflated prices is not merely irresponsible but is morally reprehensible.

He says what is further disturbing is the disclosure by the former director general of the Anti-Corruption Commission -ACC- that an accused person in a corruption case, was allowed by the commission to surrender only K23 million out of a suspected K60 million in exchange for becoming a state witness.

The consortium is urging President Hakainde Hichilema to reflect deeply on the damaging impact these reports have on the public perception of his administration and to immediately order the public release of the ZAMMSA audit report.

The consortium has also called out the ACC for its discreditable handling of cases and continued demonstration of bias and inefficiency, calling for urgent reforms, as the commission in its current form appears compromised and ineffective.

Pay Him 60 Months Salary – Court

Pay Him 60 Months Salary – Court

By Dickson Jere

A Zambian Expert – with BA in Science and Physics as well as MA in Science and Management – was employed by Africonnect Zambia Limited in 2015 on Permanent and Pensionable contract. He was “Head of Enterprise Provisioning & Support”. He did a fantastic job and the company even gave him a meritorious award of excellence for his performance.

But then, the company decided to reassign him a new role – “Head of Infrastructure & Governance” – which he was not qualified for. However, he was promised that he would be trained as he required new skills and competence. Out of his six planned training sessions, only three were conducted. In 2020, the company decided to dismiss him for poor performance.

As expected, he sued in the High Court, demanding for an allay of damages including for unfair, unlawful, wrongful dismissals and redundancy. The company insisted that he was fired for poor performance and failure to meet targets.

The Judge analysed the evidence and determined thus;

“I am satisfied that the Respondent having reassigned the Complainant to a new role which he was not adequately qualified for, it had a duty to ensure that the Complainant gets adequate training for the said position,” the Judge said.

“The reason for the dismissal therefore cannot stand,” he said, adding that the dismissal was unfair and ordered damages of three years salary.

“The actions of the Respondent amount to gross misbehavior and the Complainant, like any other employee, must be protected from such whims and caprices of powerful employers such as the Respondent…” the Court said.

The Judge further found that the dismissal also met the threshold for unlawful termination and therefore ordered a further one year salary with all otter pecks as damages to be paid the employee.

On wrongful dismissal, the Court also found that the dismissal perfectly fits  legal definition of being “wrongful termination” and ordered another one year salary with all pecks as damages.

“It has been established that the Respondent failed to provide the requisite training as well as working skills for the Complainant to discharge this new assignment,” the Judge observed.

On redundancy, once again, the Judge found that the dismissal amounted to redundancy and ordered further damages of two months pay for every year served and other benefits that he was entitled to as compensation.

“Thus, notwithstanding the fact that he continued working in the said new role amounts to redundancy,” the Judge said.

He, however, threw out claims for loss of earnings and mental distress for lack of adequate evidence.

Case citation – Eddie Nyimbwa v Africonnect Zambia Limited- Comp No. IRLK/250/2020 and Judgement delivered last month June 2025.

Lectures Notes;
1. This is an interesting case. Rarely do Courts order damages for unlawful, unfair and wrongful dismissal and then add redundancy, which is a totally different aspect of the law. The total 60 months salary as damages is also one of the rarest if not the first in our jurisdiction.

MWAKA HALWIINDI ARRESTED

SUPER model Mwaka Halwiindi spent the larger part of last evening using her mouth to answer police questions over viral porno videos that she featured in.

This is after two weeks of netizens and journalists querying the police on why Mwaka had not been arrested almost immediately the videos leaked.

A fortnight ago, the model went viral after she was seen in a video devouring the alleged reproductive organs of Kazadi like a famished child clinging to its mother’s breasts, almost swallowing the entire milked properties.

Days later, Mwaka was seen in different videos, bouncing and grinding on different baby making hosepipes.

Around 17:00 hours yesterday, police finally found transport to apprehend Mwaka and booked her into Chilenje police station together with her companion, David Kazadi who was couriered all the way from Livingstone.

Later after quizzing the duo,  police moved Mwaka to Kabwata police station while Kazadi was left locked up at Chilenje police station.

According to sources at Chilenje police station, Mwaka was warned and cautioned for production of obscene material, contrary to Section 177 of the Penal Code Act, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia and so was Kazadi.

Both are yet to be formally charged.

Meanwhile, Kazadi opted to remain silent, despite understanding the charge as told by his lawyer, Simon Mwila.

SCHOOL COMMITMENT FORM LAUNCHED TO PROMOTE DISCIPLINE AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN SCHOOLS

Lusaka-July 15th, 2025.

By Jack Makayi

The Minister of Education Hon. Douglas Siakalima has launched the Secondary School Commitment Form, a transformative initiative aimed at improving discipline, accountability, and learner performance in Zambian schools.

The Honourable Minister of Education Mr. Douglas M. Siakalima MP, who was represented  by the Permanent Secretary for Administration, Dr. Kelvin Mambwe, described the new form as “a symbol of our shared responsibility to shape a disciplined generation”, emphasizing that the responsibility of education lies not only with schools and government, but with the entire community.

In his keynote speech he highlighted that,
“This initiative is more than just a document, It reflects a national commitment to quality, inclusive, and value-based education—anchored on mutual respect, collaboration, and clear expectations.”

The form defines roles and commitments for;
Teachers – to manage learner behavior professionally. Learners – to show respect and remain focused on their education. Parents and Guardians – to support and guide their children in partnership with schools. School Leaders – to handle disciplinary cases transparently and fairly.

The speech stressed that no learner should be expelled or transferred on disciplinary grounds unless procedures outlined in the form are followed. Schools will now be required to check disciplinary records before accepting transferred learners.

He further emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to overseeing implementation and providing policy support, noting that provinces and districts must:

Ensure all secondary learners sign the form include all stakeholders in its rollout, use it to guide regular reviews of learner conduct and academic.

ZAMBIA A DARK NATION FOR ALMOST TWO STRAIGHT YEARS- LOADSHEDDING MUST COME TO AN END – ZIGCLAP

ZAMBIA A DARK NATION FOR ALMOST TWO STRAIGHT YEARS- LOADSHEDDING MUST COME TO AN END

Zambia can’t normalize loadshedding in the 21st century.

Zambians and businesses have endured the worst power supply in the nation’s history.  It is almost two years of national darkness.

It is highly unacceptable that a nation at 61 years old can take the people for granted for such a long time, the people’s endurance has been stretched way too far.

It is highly immoral for Zambia to continue exporting electricity to the neighboring countries while suffocating citizens, small and medium scale farmers, entrepreneurs and industries.

Zambia needs electricity of a minimum 16 to 18 hours daily of predictable schedules. That is not a favor the people are asking for.

NIGERIAN PRESIDENT TINUBU RECEIVES REMAINS OF FORMER PRESIDENT BUHARI IN KATSINA AHEAD OF FINAL RITES IN DAURA

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday received the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina.

President Tinubu arrived at the airport from Abuja at 1:42 p.m. and inspected a guard of honour before the Nigerian Air Force plane conveying the remains of his predecessor landed at exactly 1:51 p.m.

Former President Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, President Buhari’s wife Aisha, and other family members accompanied President Buhari’s remains to Nigeria.

President Tinubu, along with Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Umaru Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, Prime Minister of Niger, Ali Lamine Zeine, former President of Niger, Issoufou Mahamadou, and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, received the casket of the late president at the foot of the aircraft.

A joint team of military pallbearers comprising nine senior officers laid the casket, draped with the Nigerian flag, on a trolley. The team included Major-General Mohammed Usman, Major-General Oluwafemi Williams, Major-General Shuaibu Nudu, Rear Admiral Suleiman Dahun, Rear Admiral Jonathan Ajodo, Rear Admiral Samuel Ngatuwa, Air Vice Marshal Adeniyi Herbert Amesinlola, Air Vice Marshal Idi Sanni, and Air Vice Marshal Obinna Obiabaka. Major General Mike Alechenu coordinated the team.

The pallbearers wheeled the former leader’s casket in a slow march, in sync with the hymn “God Be With You Till We Meet Again,” passing through a full military guard of honour comprising six officers and 96 soldiers drawn from the Nigerian Armed Forces.

President Tinubu and others walked behind the casket trolley in a solemn procession. The pallbearers escorted the casket into a waiting military hearse for the one-hour journey to Daura, where funeral prayers and the burial ceremony would take place.

The state funeral featured full military honours, including a 21-gun salute.

Uganda men in joy as court legalize polygamy; women are now asking for polyandry

The Constitutional Court of Uganda has ruled that men can legally marry multiple wives, rejecting a challenge from the Women’s Pro Bono Initiative (WPI).

The decision came after the Women’s Pro Bono Initiative (WPI) challenging the practice of men marrying more than one woman.

The advocacy group argued that polygamy is degrading, harmful, and discriminatory toward women, but the court found insufficient evidence to support their case, affirming the practice under customary and Islamic laws.

The decision has ignited heated discussions across social media, with some Ugandan women now advocating for the right to polyandry—allowing women to take multiple husbands—to achieve gender equality in marriage laws.

Critics of the ruling argue it perpetuates patriarchal norms, while supporters maintain it aligns with cultural and religious traditions.

An urgent Message to Hichilema on the illegal and unconstitutional process to amend the Republican Constitution- Rev Godfridah Sumaili

An urgent Message to His excellency, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr Hakainde Hichilema on the illegal and unconstitutional process to amend the Republican Constitution.

Mr President, as a citizen endowed with the rights to defend and protect the Constitution of this country, l feel duty bound to remind you, Sir, that you are the number one custodian of the Constitution of this country. And that you publicly stood before the people with the holy Bible in your hand and swore that you would protect and defend the Constitution!

Mr President, l noted with dismay that you commended the recent ruling by the Hon Madam Speaker where she totally disregarded the Constitutional Court Judgement. I will not comment further on the Speaker’s ruling because the matter is now before the Constitutional Court.
But allow me, Your Excellency, to humbly appeal to you that you should listen to the voice of all stakeholders and withdraw Bill 7 from Parliament because the appropriate Court has categorically declared that Bill 7 is illegal and unconstitutional for want of the laid down processes and procedures. If this Bill is not withdrawn, the precedent being set will undermine the authority of the Judiciary and will threaten the rule of law which you have always passionately preached.

You are aware, Mr President, that Article 1(1&2) clearly provides that any act or omissions that contravenes any part of the Constitution is illegal and any law or practice that is inconsistent with any constitutional provision is null and void to the extent of that inconsistency.

I need not remind you, Sir, that the Republican Constitution which is the will of the people, is binding on all citizens including the Presidency and all state organs!

Your Excellency, one of your core responsibilities under the Constitution is to report to the National Assembly on the progress made in the application of the values and principles specified under Part II of the Constitution. Article 8 of the Constitution obliges you, Mr President, to report to the people of Zambia through Parliament on the National Values and Principles which include Constitutionalism, good governance and integrity which should apply to:
(a) interpretation of the Constitution;
(b) enactment and interpretation of the law; and
(c) development and implementation of state policy.

Sir, it is in view of the foregoing, that it is expedient that the illegal, unconstitutional and infamous Bill 7 be withdrawn.
If the disregard for the Judicial authority remains unchecked, Zambia risks long term institutional damage. Sir, Governance should never be driven by political expediency or hidden agendas at the expense of Constitutional Principles and Discipline.

Respectfully l submit,

Rev Godfridah Sumaili( Mrs)

Ban  of  use of PF regalia in the Mfuwe by-election campaigns is illegal and unconstitutional- CCMG

THE decision by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to ban the use of the Patriotic Front (PF) regalia in the Mfuwe parliamentary by-election campaigns is illegal and unconstitutional, the Christian Churches Monitoring Group (CCMG) has said.

CCMG was reacting to the ECZ’s ban on the use of PF regalia by the National Congress Party (NCP), a party under which the Tonse Alliance is fielding a candidate in the Mfuwe parliamentary by-election.

Programme director Peter Mwanang’ombe said the ECZ’s decision was a source of concern because it lacked any legal backing.

“The Christian Churches Monitoring Group, CCMG, expresses concern over the statement attributed to the Electoral Commission of Zambia, ECZ, to stop the New Congress Party, which is in an alliance with the Patriotic Front, PF, and other parties under the Tonse Alliance, from using PF regalia during the Mfuwe parliamentary by-election campaigns. This is not supported by any clear legal provision and is a misinterpretation of the Electoral Process Act,” Mwanang’ombe said.

He said it was important for Zambians and the ECZ, in particular, to know that there was no provision of the law that stopped alliances from using an agreed regalia.

Mwanang’ombe urged ECZ to familiarise itself with the law that governed elections in Zambia to avoid creating unnecessary conflict when it knew too well that alliances were permissible in Zambia.

“It is important to note that there is no provision in the Electoral Process Act that prohibits a political party, whether part of an alliance or not, from using regalia belonging to another party during campaigns. Section 2 of the Electoral Process Act defines campaign material to include manifestos, clothing and any items depicting symbols or pictorial images of a candidate,” Mwanang’ombe said.

“This definition clearly encompasses party regalia and does not place any restriction on who may wear it. Furthermore, Section 29 (3) of the Electoral Process Act deals specifically with the distribution of campaign material, while Section 29 (4) narrows its focus to candidates or political parties contesting the election,” he said.

There was no legal basis on which ECZ could block political parties in an alliance from using any regalia of a member party as a show of unity in a campaign for support.

“However, these sections still do not provide a legal basis for prohibiting the use of regalia by allied parties supporting a common candidate. Currently, political alliances are recognised, and it is common practice for alliance members to support one candidate. It follows, therefore, that members of such alliances have the right to wear their respective party regalia in support of that candidate, as a show of unity and political collaboration,” Mwanang’ombe said.

He said ECZ’s statement was misguided and lacked legal grounding and urged it to reconsider its position.

“CCMG urges the commission [ECZ] to reconsider its position and uphold the freedom of association and expression, and the spirit of democratic participation and alliance-building,” Mwanang’ombe said.

HICHILEMA MUST REVISIT MINING CONCESSIONS – Dr Fred M’membe

HICHILEMA MUST REVISIT MINING CONCESSIONS

The solutions to Zambia’s problems lie within the framework and borders of this country, and we have regularly illustrated how this can be done.

We have on several occasions advised Mr Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND government on the urgent need for them to pay a lot of attention to the taxation of our mines. Clearly, we are losing out so much, and it’s sad to watch. We definitely need to get our act together and get fair taxes from our minerals.

There was absolutely no need for Mr Hichilema and the UPND government to be in a rush to give away our minerals to foreign transnational mining corporations for next to nothing. All these mining firms like Anglo American, Anglovaal, Glencore, Vendanta and other mining corporations are interested in our minerals because there are huge profits to be made now, and in the future.

Yet when we advise Mr Hichilema and his league to revisit the mining concessions and tax waivers to improve dollar inflows to the treasury, and the economy at large, they never take our advice or act on it. They know it all and continue to pursue impractical and irresponsible policies.

But here is the reality:

Do you know that US$2 billion of tax waivers per annum can employ 3 million farm workers? This is the reality on the issue of tax incentives. Do you also know that it takes 180 pounds of copper to make a Tesla or other electric vehicle? This is five times the amount of copper needed to make a combustion engine motor vehicle. And it takes 450 pounds of copper to build a normal house, once you include electric appliances, wiring and fixtures. If you put solar panels on it that will take another 100 to 150 pounds of copper wiring. A solar farm used to generate energy requires five times the copper it takes for an equivalent natural, coal, or nuclear power plant.

Truth is, if we are going to turn our cars into electric vehicles, we are going to need a lot more copper over the next ten years. If we are going to build houses for all the millennials – the largest generation on the planet – we are also going to need a lot more copper. If renewables, such as wind and solar power, are used to build those things and supply energy then we will still need a lot more copper.

Under these circumstances, it does not and will never make sense to give tax breaks and other unnecessary incentives to transnational mining corporations. Yet we want to be visiting Western capitals with a begging bowl for help as though we can’t think, plan and see. Why would we do that? The UPND has certainly not acted wisely on this matter. And we can think of no reason why a government would do this, unless it was acting out of ignorance or corruption, or both.

But by so doing, Mr Hichilema and the UPND government are depriving Zambians to improve their well being; through the provision of improved salaries, infrastructure, social amenities, education, health and so on and so forth.

We again ask Mr Hichilema to heed our call, and act on these solutions with immediacy.

LUBINDA ACCUSES PRESIDENT HICHILEMA OF HYPOCRISY OVER LUNGU FUNERAL CONTROVERSY

LUBINDA ACCUSES PRESIDENT HICHILEMA OF HYPOCRISY OVER LUNGU FUNERAL CONTROVERSY

By: Sun FM TV Reporter

The Patriotic Front (PF) has accused President Hakainde Hichilema of hypocrisy following his remarks that he limited international travel out of respect for the funeral of late former President Edgar Lungu.

At a media briefing, acting PF president Given Lubinda argued that the president’s decision to end the national mourning period contradicted his stated intention to honor the late leader.

Lubinda further criticized the government’s legal action involving Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha, who reportedly filed a lawsuit against the former First Family over the burial arrangements in South Africa.

Lubinda condemned the inclusion of South Africa’s Foreign Affairs Minister in the legal proceedings, calling it a national embarrassment. He urged the government to avoid inflammatory remarks and actions that could further strain relations with the Lungu family and undermine national unity.

The controversy stems from the decision by Lungu’s family to bury the former president in South Africa, citing a lack of government support and alleged breaches of funeral agreements. The PF maintains that the government failed to honor its commitments and mishandled the mourning process.

This dispute has sparked broader calls for legal clarity on state funerals and highlighted lingering political tensions between the ruling UPND and the opposition.

HYPOCRISY AND SELECTIVE ACTION IN THE FIGHT AGAINST MEDICAL CORRUPTION- Abraham Simpamba

HYPOCRISY AND SELECTIVE ACTION IN THE FIGHT AGAINST MEDICAL CORRUPTION

15th July 2025

Fellow Citizens,

We have taken note of the press release issued today by State House, claiming “decisive action” in addressing corruption within the medical supply chain. While the language is polished and the promises grand, the Zambian people are not fooled by well-scripted public relations stunts that are disconnected from historical accountability.

Let us remind the nation that this is the same President who remained completely silent during the notorious scandal involving over 40 containers of missing medicine a national embarrassment that occurred under the leadership of Sylvia Masebo at the Ministry of Health. To date, the Zambian public has received no clear answers, no arrests, no prosecutions, and certainly no genuine reforms related to that grave incident.

It is therefore the height of hypocrisy for State House to today posture as a champion of transparency and accountability.

KEY QUESTIONS THAT REMAIN UNANSWERED:

Where are the audit reports on the famous missing containers of medicine? Why was the Minister not suspended or investigated, but instead quietly reshuffled to the Ministry of Lands? Why did the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) suddenly go silent on the matter? What disciplinary action was taken against individuals within ZAMMSA and the Ministry who were allegedly involved?

This selective morality and convenient enforcement of accountability only when politically suitable continues to undermine public trust in governance.

Today’s press statement is not a sign of bold leadership it is a calculated afterthought, forced by growing public frustration and diplomatic pressure, particularly from the U.S. Ambassador, who publicly acknowledged holding over 30 meetings concerning mismanagement and corruption within the Ministry of Health.

REAL ACCOUNTABILITY REQUIRES:

Full disclosure and action regarding the infamous medicine container scandal. A comprehensive report and public review of Sylvia Masebo’s tenure at the Ministry of Health. Independent inquiries into past procurement irregularities and medical supply chain mismanagement. Political neutrality in investigations no protection for party loyalists.

THE PRESIDENT CANNOT CLAIM TO FIGHT CORRUPTION WHILE SHELTERING THOSE CLOSE TO POWER.

If the President is truly serious about cleaning up the rot, then he must begin by addressing the scandals that unfolded under his own watch not merely appointing task forces when public pressure becomes unbearable or when it is politically safe.

Zambians deserve more than politically convenient audits. They deserve justice, integrity, and leadership that is consistent, impartial, and fearless even when the accused sit within the ruling party.

This situation is no different from the gold scandal, which has vanished like vapor in the wind yet the very same people continue preaching “the rule of law.” It’s a shame, bane.

Until real action is taken, today’s press release remains what it truly is: damage control  not reform.

MAKEBI ZULU’S LAW PRACTICING LICENSE UNDER THREAT FOR REPRESENTING THE LUNGU FAMILY

BREAKING NEWS

MAKEBI ZULU’S LAW PRACTICING LICENSE UNDER THREAT FOR REPRESENTING THE LUNGU FAMILY

SOMEONE called DANIEL CHUNGU has lodged a quick complaint against Zambia’s renowned and most respected Lawyer MAKEBI ZULU to the Law Association of Zambia  seeking an investigation for speaking on behalf of his clients the Lungu family.

A DANIEL CHUNGU, says that the alleged misconduct relates to comments made by Mr. ZULU concerning the ongoing impasse over the burial site of the late Sixth President, EDGAR LUNGU.

CHUNGU accused Mr. ZULU of undermining constitutional authority by speaking on behalf of the Lungu family that President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA should be excluded from the State Funeral of Mr. LUNGU.

Speaking to the media after submitting the petition at LAZ House in LUSAKA on Monday, Mr CHUNGU said that Mr. ZULU should be subjected to disciplinary proceedings or be removed from the Roll of Legal Practitioners if found in breach of professional ethics.

He further alleged that Mr. ZULU had failed to produce legal documentation or testamentary evidence to support the family’s stance regarding funeral arrangements.

CHUNGU described Mr. ZULU’s remarks about President HICHILEMA’s exclusion from the funeral as unconstitutional, inflammatory, and reckless, particularly given that Mr. HICHILEMA is the incumbent Head of State.

ConCourt to Deliver Judgment on Petauke Central Seat Dispute

ConCourt to Deliver Judgment on Petauke Central Seat Dispute

The Constitutional Court of Zambia is scheduled to deliver judgment on Thursday, July 17, 2025, in a case challenging the decision to declare the Petauke Central parliamentary seat vacant.

The case was brought before the court by Isaac Mwanza, Executive Director of the Zambian Civil Liberties Union, who sued the Attorney General, Speaker of the National Assembly, and the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ). Mwanza argues that the National Assembly exceeded its authority by declaring the seat vacant a role he says is reserved for the judiciary.

The seat was declared vacant on the grounds of a breach of the Code of Conduct, as outlined under Article 72(2)(c) of the Zambian Constitution. However, Mwanza contends that only a judicial tribunal appointed by the Chief Justice or a court of law can determine such a breach.

Citing the Chishimba Kambwili case, Mwanza argues that the Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, acted outside her constitutional mandate by assuming judicial powers. In that earlier case, the court criticized similar actions by a previous Speaker.

In response, the Attorney General and the Speaker defended their decision, saying the Member of Parliament violated the 2024 Standing Orders of the National Assembly, which they argue constitute the prescribed Code of Conduct. The ECZ stated that it merely acted upon notification of the vacancy and played no role in the decision to declare the seat vacant.

The court is expected to address two critical questions: Did Parliament overstep its constitutional role, and does Article 72(2)(c) refer to the Standing Orders or the Parliamentary and Ministerial Code of Conduct Act?

Mwanza is seeking a declaration that the actions of the National Assembly were unconstitutional and illegal, citing Article 72(2)(c) and Article 119 of the Constitution, as well as provisions of the Parliamentary and Ministerial Code of Conduct Act and the Electoral Process Act.

The outcome of the case is expected to set an important legal precedent regarding the separation of powers and the proper process for disciplining Members of Parliament.

PRESIDENT  HICHILEMA LAUNCHES SWEEPING REFORMS TO CLEAN UP MEDICAL SUPPLY CHAIN, DISSOLVES ZAMMSA BOARD AND INTRODUCES TOUGH ANTI-THEFT MEASURES

PRESIDENT  HICHILEMA ANNOUNCES MEASURES AIMED AT ERADICATING CORRUPTION IN MEDICAL SUPPLY CHAIN.
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

STATE HOUSE

PRESS RELEASE

Date: 15th July, 2025, Lusaka.

DECISIVE ACTION TO ERADICATE CORRUPTION IN MEDICAL SUPPLY CHAIN WITH SWEEPING REFORMS

The President’s commitment to cleaning up the medical supply chain remains steadfast. Last year, the President commissioned a comprehensive independent forensic audit of the sector, one of several decisive measures to tackle long-standing, systemic issues that he described as “cancerous” and rooted in historical theft of medicines.

The audit was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), a globally respected accountancy firm. In line with the President’s principles of transparency and accountability, preliminary findings were shared with cooperating partners at State House at his own invitation.

The President reiterates that there shall be no sacred cows, anyone found wanting will face the full force of the law.

While the President’s decision to engage an external auditor initially met hostility from opposition quarters, who are ironically now citing its findings, he stood firm in prioritising integrity over partisanship.

We wish to make it clear that:

• The matters identified in the audit are currently under investigation by relevant law enforcement agencies.

• Relevant departments are cooperating fully with these agencies to ensure a thorough, impartial, and just process.

• Everyone remains innocent until proven guilty, and findings will be made public once investigations and due process have concluded.

In response to preliminary audit findings, swift and decisive actions have already been taken, including:

NO ONE IS ABOVE THE CONSTITUTION…as LAZ challenges Speaker over Bill 7

NO ONE IS ABOVE THE CONSTITUTION

…as LAZ challenges Speaker over Bill 7

Lusaka… Tuesday July 15, 2025 – The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has taken legal action against Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, over her handling of the controversial Bill No. 7 of 2025.

According to a statement issued by activist and Socialist Party member Mr. Thompson Luzendi, LAZ had filed a petition challenging the Speaker’s decision to allow the continuation of a legislative process that had already been declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court.

Mr. Luzendi stated that this action by LAZ served as a vital reminder that Zambia remains a constitutional democracy, not a space for “political convenience.”

Mr. Luzendi commended LAZ and the legal team representing them for what he described as a principled and moral stand in defense of the rule of law.

He emphasized that this was more than a legal battle–it was a fight to restore constitutional integrity and safeguard the democratic framework of the nation.

The Constitutional Court, in a ruling delivered on 27 June 2025, had declared the process surrounding Bill No. 7 illegal, citing lack of public consultation and violations of Articles 1, 2, 5, and 79 of the Constitution.

That judgment, Mr. Luzendi asserted, was final and binding.

Despite this, on 9 July, Speaker Mutti ruled that Parliament could proceed with the bill if the Minister of Justice chose to reintroduce it.

Mr. Luzendi described the Speaker’s decision as unconstitutional, defiant, and a dangerous precedent.

He argued that such actions undermined the authority of the judiciary and threatened the constitutional order of the country.

He further stated that the Speaker, like all public officers, was bound by the Constitution and had no authority to override court rulings.

Mr. Luzendi warned that ignoring such judgments weakened the separation of powers and could push the nation toward what he termed “constitutional collapse.”

According to Mr. Luzendi, by taking the matter to court, LAZ was stepping in where Parliament had failed, acting to protect the Constitution from abuse.

He expressed deep appreciation for the lawyers involved, praising them for defending democracy in a climate where silence and fear had become tools of suppression.

He reaffirmed that Zambia was a nation of laws, not individuals or positions of power.

No Speaker, Minister, or political party, he said, could lawfully ignore a ruling from the Constitutional Court.

Mr. Luzendi called on the court to reassert its authority and urged all citizens, civil society actors, and institutions to recognize the gravity of the moment.

He insisted that Bill No. 7 must not proceed illegally and that Speaker Mutti should be reminded her powers were not absolute.

Meanwhile, Mr. Luzendi expressed hope that this legal challenge would be remembered not merely as a clash between law and power, but as a moment where principle triumphed over political manipulation.

Comparing the fate of Bill 7 to that of the previously defeated Bill 10, Mr. Luzendi called for it to be “thrown into the dustbin of history.”

A New Generation for a New Zambia and Why Binwell Mpundu is the Change We Need

A New Generation for a New Zambia and Why Binwell Mpundu is the Change We Need.

In 1991, Zambia made a historic shift. The youthful Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) rose from the frustration of years under UNIP and ushered in a wave of fresh energy and reform. That moment symbolized the power and potential of youth-led leadership. But somewhere along the way, that youthful revolution got comfortable.

Many of those young leaders of 1991, once the face of change have clung to power, directly or indirectly, by conveniently switching camps from one ruling party to another. The same old political DNA has remained in charge, recycled and repackaged under different banners. MMD-PF-UPND, look around and you’ll note that some faces are have worn all 3 colors; Blue, Green and now Red.

Today, Zambia stands at another critical crossroads. With a struggling economy, growing debt, youth unemployment, and a shifting global order, our nation needs more than recycled slogans. We need bold, exposed, and intellectually grounded leadership UNTAINTED by the ghosts of political complacency.

Now, let’s talk about Binwell. Young, outspoken, and deeply grounded in the issues that matter, Mpundu has proven himself where it counts (in Parliament.) His contributions are not just noise; they’re loaded with depth, relevance, and foresight. Whether questioning policy inconsistencies, defending the the freedoms and dignity of ordinary citizens, or pushing for equitable development, he has consistently been one of the few MPs speaking truth to power.

When the political elite left him out of adoption for the Nkana seat, many thought it was the end of the road. But the people had other plans. Mpundu went independent and still emerged victorious, this is a testament to his connection with the grassroots and the trust the people have in his leadership.

Now, he he must step forward and offer Zambia something different, a new chapter.

This isn’t just about one man. It’s about a new breed of politicians who are more globally aware, tech-savvy, economically literate, and less weighed down by political patronage. Mpundu represents a generation that understands the geopolitical shifts reshaping Africa’s position in the world from BRICS to global energy transitions, from digital economies to climate diplomacy.

Our current challenges demand new thinking. The old tools have failed. What Zambia needs now is a president with the courage to challenge convention, the intellect to engage on global platforms, and the HUMILITY to listen to the people.

Binwell Mpundu won’t just run for president. Mpundu will lead a generational transition.

Come 13th August 2026, I would love to see him on the ballot!!!

Let’s hand over power to a new generation.

Binwell Mpundu 2026.

Kwacha Appreciation Marks a Critical Turning Point – Consolidating Gains for Sustainable Growth

Kwacha Appreciation Marks a Critical Turning Point – Consolidating Gains for Sustainable Growth

By Dr. Lubinda Haabazoka
Economist

The recent appreciation of the Zambian Kwacha represents a pivotal moment in the country’s macroeconomic trajectory. After a prolonged period of currency volatility, rising inflation, and constrained fiscal space, the upward movement of the local unit signals early recovery and growing investor confidence. More importantly, it provides a window of opportunity for Zambia to reinforce stability, implement structural reforms, and rebuild economic resilience.

From its peak levels of depreciation earlier in the year, the Kwacha has appreciated by over 20% against major trading currencies. This performance is primarily underpinned by improved foreign exchange liquidity, enhanced mining sector inflows, and investor optimism driven by the country’s progress on debt restructuring and macroeconomic reforms. The appreciation is further supported by the Bank of Zambia’s consistent monetary stance and government efforts to contain non-essential public expenditure.

Macroeconomic Transmission Effects Already Underway

The appreciation of the Kwacha has already begun transmitting positive effects through key macroeconomic channels:

1. Foreign Trade and Import Costs
A stronger currency directly reduces the Kwacha cost of imports, particularly fuel, pharmaceuticals, capital equipment, and inputs critical to agriculture and manufacturing. For an economy with high import dependency, the reduction in import bills will ease pressures on firms’ cost structures and help reduce cost-push inflation in coming months.

2. Debt Servicing and Fiscal Relief
Zambia’s external debt portfolio is largely denominated in foreign currencies. Currency appreciation, therefore, lowers the local currency burden of external debt service, freeing up fiscal space for social and capital expenditures. This is a critical development in restoring budget credibility and supporting growth-enhancing investments.

3. Household Welfare and Real Incomes
As businesses replenish inventories at more favourable exchange rates, a reduction in retail prices for imported consumer goods is expected within the next one to two months. Lower inflation will help restore household purchasing power and mitigate real income erosion, particularly among low- and middle-income groups.

4. Market Sentiment and Capital Flows
Exchange rate stability has improved investor sentiment, reducing currency risk premiums and enhancing Zambia’s attractiveness to both portfolio and direct investors. This can support the recovery of capital markets and improve access to foreign investment financing, especially in infrastructure, manufacturing, and renewable energy.

Commendation of Macroeconomic Policy Coordination

The performance of the Kwacha is a direct reflection of effective policy coordination between fiscal and monetary authorities. The Ministry of Finance has exercised fiscal restraint and demonstrated transparency in public accounts, while the Bank of Zambia has maintained a tight monetary policy stance consistent with inflation targeting and currency stability.

The recent restructuring of external debt under the Common Framework has also played a vital role in restoring credibility with creditors and multilateral institutions, thereby improving access to concessional financing and reducing exchange rate speculation.

Furthermore, enhanced mining sector compliance with export proceeds repatriation requirements has significantly improved foreign exchange availability.

A Strategic Call for Reserve Diversification Through Gold

While the current appreciation is a positive development, it is critical that Zambia uses this opportunity to build long-term buffers against future external shocks. One strategic recommendation is the accelerated accumulation of gold as part of the country’s foreign reserves.

Gold serves as a countercyclical asset and a hedge against global financial volatility and currency devaluation. With over 500 artisanal and small-scale gold mining licenses issued, Zambia is well positioned to enhance its gold reserve strategy. The Bank of Zambia should strengthen its domestic gold purchasing program, ensure transparent pricing mechanisms, and invest in local refining capacity to retain more value within the domestic economy.

Incorporating gold reserves alongside traditional foreign currency holdings can significantly enhance reserve adequacy, increase monetary policy flexibility, and reduce dependence on a single commodity or bilateral currency support.

The Outlook: Managing Expectations and Institutionalizing Stability
While the appreciation of the Kwacha is promising, policymakers must manage expectations prudently. Short-term gains can only be sustained through continued policy consistency and institutional strengthening.

The following areas are critical going forward:

– Maintaining fiscal discipline and avoiding election-related expenditure overruns.

– Deepening domestic revenue mobilization without stifling productive sectors.

– Promoting local content and export diversification, particularly in agriculture, tourism, and services.

– Accelerating structural reforms in public procurement, energy pricing, and state-owned enterprises to enhance fiscal space and efficiency.

– Ensuring monetary policy remains forward-looking, guided by inflation and exchange rate dynamics rather than political pressures.

Responsible Pricing and Ethical Business Practice

I urge the private sector to respond responsibly to the macroeconomic improvements. As new inventories are procured at a stronger exchange rate, businesses must revise their pricing models downward to reflect reduced costs.

Maintaining prices at artificially high levels while exchange rates improve undermines consumer welfare and erodes trust in the private sector. Business ethics must align with national development goals.

Conclusion: Staying the Course

The appreciation of the Kwacha is a strong signal that Zambia’s economy is stabilizing. It is a result of deliberate policy choices, international cooperation, and market discipline. However, sustaining this momentum requires continued focus, prudent leadership, and a long-term vision.

Zambia is at a strategic inflection point. With the right mix of fiscal prudence, monetary discipline, strategic reserve management, and responsible private sector behaviour, we can convert current gains into a foundation for sustained, inclusive, and resilient economic growth.

“President Hakainde’s Economic Vision Bears Fruit: Kwacha Appreciation an example of UPND’s Effective Leadership”

By Timmy

The recent appreciation of the Zambian Kwacha is a significant milestone in the country’s economic journey, and it’s a direct result of the effective leadership and vision of President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND government.

The Kwacha’s 20% appreciation against major trading currencies is a testament to the government’s commitment to macroeconomic stability, fiscal discipline, and structural reforms. The Bank of Zambia’s consistent monetary stance and the government’s efforts to contain non-essential public expenditure have also contributed to this positive development.

The UPND government’s efforts to improve foreign exchange liquidity, enhance mining sector inflows, and promote investor optimism have paid off. The recent restructuring of external debt under the Common Framework has also played a vital role in restoring credibility with creditors and multilateral institutions.

The appreciation of the Kwacha has already begun to transmit positive effects through key macroeconomic channels, including reduced import costs, debt servicing relief, and improved household welfare. This is a clear indication that the UPND government’s policies are working to improve the lives of Zambians.

As we move forward, it’s essential to maintain fiscal discipline, deepen domestic revenue mobilization, and promote local content and export diversification. The importance of effective policy coordination between fiscal and monetary authorities cannot be overstated.

The UPND government’s commitment to building long-term buffers against future external shocks, such as accumulating gold as part of the country’s foreign reserves, demonstrates its vision for a sustainable and resilient economy.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) Media Team, led by Media Director Mr. Mark Simuuwe has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of New Labour Party (NLP) President Frasier Siwale, who died aged 60 at Lusaka’s Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital.

Mr. Simuuwe, who was in China as part of a delegation accompanying UPND Secretary General Batuke Imenda, said he received the news of Mr. Siwale’s death while on official duty abroad. He described Mr. Siwale as a courageous and principled leader whose voice shaped Zambia’s democratic space.

“I was deeply saddened to learn of Mr. Siwale’s passing while away in China. He was a bold, outspoken leader who championed justice, even in the face of adversity. His passing is not only a loss to his family and party, but to the entire democratic movement in Zambia,” Mr. Simuuwe said.

Frasier Siwale led the New Labour Party, which was an alliance partner of the UPND, particularly during the push for democratic reforms and the struggle against the excesses of the previous regime. His steadfastness and fearlessness earned him respect across the political divide.

OC WENT AS AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT, HE WENT TO FETCH GREENER PASTURE – CQ ON OC’S MOVE TO USA AND HIS DECISION TO REMAIN

OC WENT AS AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT, HE WENT TO FETCH GREENER PASTURE – CQ ON OC’S MOVE TO USA AND HIS DECISION TO REMAIN

Veteran Zambian artist CQ Muzukulu opened up about his best career moments touring the USA with OC Oscillation and JYC, and getting paid 17,000 USD at one particular show which was more than their usual 1,000 USD paycheck while featuring on Kenny T 1 ON 1 podcast hosted by Kenny T.

When this six months, twenty-five(25) states USA tour, which the singer described as the best moment in his singing career, ended, they came back to Zambia.

The singer told Kenny T after he queried about OC remaining in the USA, “We stayed for a bit then OC just said hmm mune, kulya twafuma kulya, I think ekuli program.”

The two would converse about how OC Oscillation left Zambia at a time he was becoming a mainstream artist. CQ said people have different dreams, and for him, he chose to visit the USA from time to time and not become an illegal citizen in that country as it is not the nicest thing.

“Who is illegal?” Kenny T asked CQ. The singer responded, “Like, OC went as an illegal immigrant, like he went to fetch greener pasture. So, you become an illegal whilst you push, so in the process of pushing, you run away from police, you run away from all these immigration officers.”

CQ further highlighted that he did not fancy that idea of constantly running away when one just saw a police car until one got the right documentation. Hence, unlike OC Oscillation, he chose to stay and renew his visa before going back.

The singer would say that he took a couple more trips to the USA for shows in 2014, but since OC’s departure, they have not met, but they still talk.

“Now, he’s established now. He’s big now, he runs the USA, he knows his ways about. He’s not like a small boy, now he is like a big boy,” added the singer.

CQ would finally tell Kenny T that OC Oscillation is now in Hollywood pursuing an acting career, and he is also continuing with his music career.

OC Oscillation is one of the best artists to come out of Zambia. His ability to evolve and not only survive but succeed in different environments is something young people would do great to learn from the singer and actor.

NACHULA CONFIDENT AS COPPER QUEENS GEAR UP FOR NIGERIA REMATCH

NACHULA CONFIDENT AS COPPER QUEENS GEAR UP FOR NIGERIA REMATCH

Copper Queens winger Racheal Nachula says Zambia’s confidence is sky-high heading into Friday’s quarterfinal clash with Nigeria at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024.

Zambia finished second in Group B without losing a single match and collecting seven points. The focus now shifts to Friday’s crunch tie against the record champions Nigeria, in a rematch of the 2022 bronze medal match where Zambia won 1-0.

“My teammates and I are very happy because we managed to come second in our group stage and of which our group I think it was very tough. Three teams from our group have qualified to the quarterfinals and that shows that our group was very tough and strong,” Nachula said.

“As Copper Queens, we know that Nigeria is one of the best teams in Africa and I think Copper Queens also we are also one of the best teams in Africa. We can conquer each and every team and we are not scared of any team, like we cannot be scared of Nigeria.”

She said the team’s mentality is solid and their preparation has been focused on executing coach Nora Häuptle’s plans.

“All we need is just to work extra hard and be focused and also maintain the instructions that we have been given by our coach and we are going to play the game according to our coach’s plan,” Nachula said.

“Nothing is going to disturb us. Nothing is going to disturb us mentally or physically. We are ready for Nigeria and I am sure it will be a good game,” she added.

Zambia’s win over Nigeria in 2022 remains a key point of motivation for Nachula and the Copper Queens.

“In the 2022 edition, we faced Nigeria in the third and fourth game and we came out third. We beat Nigeria and that also gave us motivation… no matter how big the team is, we can beat them because we are Copper Queens and we know what we are capable of doing,” she said.

“We are strong enough and we can conquer each and every team, whether in Africa or worldwide.”

The winner of the Zambia versus Nigeria quarterfinal will meet either South Africa or Senegal in the semifinals.

Ghana scraps fuel allowance for political appointees

Ghana scraps fuel allowance for political appointees.

By: Trt Africa

Ghana’s President John Mahama has issued a directive scrapping payment of fuel allowances to all political appointees.

It is an attempt by government to cut costs and channel public funds into priority areas, the president’s spokesman said on Tuesday in a statement.

Those expected to be affected by the directive include cabinet ministers and heads of public institutions picked by the president.

“The president believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” Felix Ofosu said.

President John Mahama was sworn into office in January after the gold- and cocoa-rich country experienced its worst economic turmoil in years. He won elections on a promise to “reset” Ghana.

Last week, the IMF said the West African country was making headway in its economic reforms and debt restructuring that the government embarked on since coming into office six months ago.

Kanye West responds to the backlash following his recent concert in Shanghai, China

Kanye West recently caused the cancelation of a Slovakian festival due to fans and artists speaking out against his inclusion.

It’s not often that Kanye West goes to the media to address reports on his many controversies, but here we are. Ye and his team issued a statement responding to negative reports about his Shanghai concert on Saturday (July 12), denying reports that he was late and addressing technical issues.

Many of the 70K-plus attendees took to social media with complaints and demands for a refund, some of which criticized the show’s set-up, sound quality, and lack of engaging performance. Reportedly, some of the crowd even chanted for refunds.

“To ensure the quality of the performance, Ye arrived at the stadium before 3:00 P.M. on July 12 (with surveillance footage available as evidence),” Kanye West’s team stated, according to AllHipHop. “The concert was originally scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM, but due to on-site equipment issues, troubleshooting and adjustments continued until 8:00 PM and still failed to reach optimal condition. Out of respect for the audience’s passion and anticipation, Ye made the decision to go on stage and perform despite the imperfect setup. Therefore, claims of Ye being late are entirely untrue.”

Throughout the show, Ye paused the performance thrice to deal with malfunctioning equipment and coordinate with staff. “Even in the midst of heavy rain, Ye insisted on returning to the stage promptly to continue performing — solely to offer the audience and fans his utmost sincerity and respect.” Also, an unauthorized track played after the show ended. “Ye was completely unaware of this and was shocked to learn of it,” the statement responded to that aspect.

“I love China. I love my Chinese fans. Your support is my greatest motivation. I promise to return your trust and love with even more perfect performances in the future!” Ye concluded the statement.

Elsewhere, Kanye West’s other controversies involve disturbing sexual misconduct allegations against him from a former Yeezy assistant and chief of staff. His team already denied the accusations and proclaimed they will fight this out in court. Meanwhile, new musical releases are on the way, including Bully presumably coming this month. We’ll see how all of these narratives evolve soon…

Boyfriend sets community ablaze after girlfriend dumps him

A 38-year-old man in Ghana is said to have set a neighborhood ablaze after his girlfriend broke up with him. Per Modern Ghana, the incident occurred in Kumasi, which is the capital city of the West African nation’s Ashanti Region.

The suspect, identified as Victor Antwi, is said to have gotten agitated after his girlfriend Gladys Sarfowaah, 25, decided to break up with him because of abusive and threatening behavior.

Residents said Antwi had subjected Sarfowaah to emotional abuse for a very long while, adding that he had also been persistently threatening her with a firearm from the initial stages of their relationship. Sarfowaah is said to have taken the decision to break up with him because she feared for her life.

But Antwi took issue with her decision, and he snuck into Sarfowaah’s home during a soccer match before setting the property ablaze. The fire, however, engulfed other homes and displaced families.

Antwi fled the scene in the wake of the incident, and he had not yet been arrested at the time of this report.

Ramaphosa fires minister of police over corruption and interference in police investigations

South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa has fired Police Minister Senzo Mchunu with immidiate effect.

The president announced that he has placed the police minister on an immediate leave of absence due to allegations of corruption and interference in police investigations.

The accusations, made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on July 6, 2025, claim Mchunu received payments from a corruption suspect.

It was claimed that he also orchestrated the disbandment of a task force investigating political killings,.

His alleged action is said to be one which uncovered links to politicians, police, and a drug cartel.

Ramaphosa announced a judicial commission, led by the deputy chief justice, to investigate these claims, with interim reports expected within three and six months.

Law professor Firoz Cachalia has been appointed as interim police minister. Mchunu denies the allegations, pledging cooperation with the investigation.

Opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters, criticized the leave of absence, calling for Mchunu’s dismissal.

Mchunu has already responded to the allegations which he denied and labeled them as baseless.

Kenya update visa requirement for all African nationals, Traveling to Kenya is now free, this is what you need to do

Kenya has officially removed visa requirements for most African nationals, effective July 14, 2025, to enhance regional integration and boost tourism.

Citizens from eligible African countries can enter Kenya without needing an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), lengthy forms, or visa fees, allowing stays of up to two months.

East African Community (EAC) members, including Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi, can stay for up to six months under existing regional agreements.

There is something interesting among the list though as Libya and Somalia are excluded from this waiver due to security concerns.

This policy aligns with the African Union’s push for visa-free travel to facilitate intra-African trade and mobility, following the lead of countries like Rwanda, Ghana, Benin, and Seychelles.

However, Kenya’s earlier attempt in January 2024 to introduce a “visa-free” policy with an ETA system was criticized as a bureaucratic barrier.

The critism has lead to a drop in its ranking on the 2024 Africa Visa Openness Index.

The new directive simplifies entry to address these issues and promote seamless travel.
