STANDOFF OVER BURIAL OF FORMER 6TH ZAMBIA’S PRESIDENT UNLIKELY TO STRAIN RELATIONS BETWEEN ZAMBIA AND SOUTH AFRICA

STANDOFF OVER BURIAL OF FORMER 6TH ZAMBIA’S PRESIDENT UNLIKELY TO STRAIN RELATIONS BETWEEN ZAMBIA AND SOUTH AFRICA

By Michael Kaluba

International Relations Expert Edgar Silwimba says the ongoing standoff over the burial of former President Edgar Lungu is unlikely to strain relations between Zambia and South Africa.

Mr. Silwimba says the issue has very little to do with Zambia-South Africa relations and is more of a domestic matter, with decisions being made at the family level rather than by governments.

He explains that the recent visit by South Africa’s minister of international relations and cooperation Ronald Lamola to Zambia, is a strong indication of the good standing between the two countries, and a clear sign that the South African government is not behind the controversial decision to bury Mr. Lungu in that country.

Mr. Silwimba adds that South Africa’s willingness to engage the Zambian government at such a difficult time is a sign of respect and diplomatic maturity, especially considering the awkward position the situation has placed that country in.

POLITICAL ANALYST WARNS AGAINST DIVISIVE AND TRIBAL POLITICS AMID EDGAR LUNGU’S PASSING

By Michael Kaluba

Political Analyst Francis Chipili has called on Zambians to unite in rejecting divisive and tribal politics, warning that the death of former president Edgar Lungu has exposed deep-rooted weaknesses in the country’s political and governance systems.

Mr. Chipili has described the current political climate as one marked by rot that, if left unchecked, could push Zambia toward irreversible ruin.

He has urged Zambians to safeguard the country’s long-standing reputation as a peaceful and respected nation on the global stage by rejecting any actions or rhetoric that threaten national unity.

Following the ongoing impasse between government and the Lungu family leading to the possibility of a burial in South Africa, Mr. Chipili says Zambia needs leaders who can rise above petty bickering and play their part in rescuing the country from divisive, regional, and tribal politics.

He has called for collective responsibility among citizens to protect and strengthen the peace and harmony Zambia has enjoyed for decades, stressing that anything that tarnishes the country’s image at home or abroad must be strongly condemned.

In this matter, Banda, a teacher at Matero Boys Secondary School, who also serves as a reverend at Reformed Church in Zambia, is facing one count of theft by public servant.

CHIEF CHIWALA CRIES FOUL OVER LAND GRABBING LED BY CARTELS IN GOVT DEPARTMENTS

By Raphael Mulenga

Senior Chief Chiwala of the Lamba-speaking people on the Copperbelt has raised concerns over rampant land grabbing of customary land, allegedly perpetrated by cartels working with officials from the ministry of lands, agriculture, and local councils.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Chief Chiwala accused the syndicates of blatantly disregarding the law and using forged documents to claim ancestral land.

He says this has led to prolonged court cases involving 21 of his subjects who face eviction while spending huge sums of money to fight for land seized without his knowledge or consent.

Chief Chiwala emphasized that he is not opposed to development, but condemns the fraudulent acquisition of land through illegal means.

The traditional leader further revealed that the cartels are issuing fake land titles in collusion with government officials, often bypassing community input during land surveys.

Meanwhile, Chieftainess Shimukunami of Lufwanyama District has accused the Lufwanyama town council of encroaching on over 700 hectares of customary land, further claiming that council staff have been harassing her subjects who have settled on the disputed land.

Lungu To Be Buried Tomorrow, No Body-viewing, Cameras Restricted

Lungu Buried Tomorrow, No Body-viewing, Cameras Restricted

On Wednesday morning, June 25, 2025, the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) and the family of former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu prepare to conduct a strictly private burial in South Africa. The Zambian government remains notably silent.

Sources close to the arrangement say no public body viewing will take place, and access to photographs will be restricted. Only a small circle is expected to access the body. Among those flown in for the private rites is Archbishop Alick Banda, a long-time clerical ally of the PF during its time in government.

PF Secures Grave for R66,000 Near Winnie Mandela’s Resting Place

The burial plot, reportedly costing 66,000 South African Rands, is located near the grave of South African icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. That detail, while symbolic, underscores the sharp divergence from Zambia’s state burial traditions.

If executed, this will mark the first time in Zambia’s democratic history that a former Head of State is buried outside the country. And crucially, not at Embassy Park, Zambia’s Presidential burial site, where Lungu’s grave remains unoccupied.

No government statement has been issued. Embassy Park has not been declared closed. There is no published burial program, no military parade, no public tribute. Just speculation and screenshots.
The PF’s confidence stems from a South African media statement, issued Monday by Minister of International Relations Ronald Lamola. While widely interpreted as a greenlight for burial, the statement is both respectful and careful.

“A state burial in Zambia represents the most fitting tribute,” Minister Lamola said, while also noting the legal obligation to honor the Lungu family’s private wishes.

No burial location or date is mentioned. No endorsement of a private South African burial is given. The message is diplomatically layered, not an approval slip.

Lungu himself, while in office, barred Hichilema from attending Kenneth Kaunda’s funeral in 2021. The irony is not lost on observers.

Lungu’s family insists on state honors while rejecting the authority of the state.

Zambia has not refused to bury Edgar Lungu.

BILL 7 –  A POLITICAL STRATEGY FAILURE A SELF CREATED MONSTER TO DESTROY UPND- KBN TV EDITORIAL

BILL 7 –  A POLITICAL STRATEGY FAILURE A SELF CREATED MONSTER TO DESTROY UPND

A KBN TV EDITORIAL

Having followed a number of stakeholder submissions, it’s clear that Bill 7, is not just a mistake, but a failure of political strategy, a disaster in waiting, a typical case of digging your own grave.

Yesterday’s launch of a coalition against Bill 7 by the Oasis Forum, is yet again another test case for the UPND administration to demonstrate its respect for democracy and the views of both ordinary citizens and stakeholders.

It’s worth noting that an endless list of stakeholders have raised concerns about Government’s determination to ignore advice and push through with Bill 7 using a process shrouded in secrecy.

The consultative process route they have chosen lacks transparency and accountability as it has been carried out selectively and behind closed doors.

As the coalition pointed out yesterday, it’s a mockery to democracy for the Minister of Justice to travesty the country alone, spending millions of public resources in holding consultative meetings with a few handpicked individuals and hoping to convince the citizenry of wide consultation.

Adopting such a process in the absence of an approved and participatory clear roadmap is not only a mockery, but it’s an insult to the collective wisdom of citizens.

To assume a superior posture and think that the Government will impose its undemocratic, treacherous, ill informed and lopsided process is not only dangerous, but suicidal for a Government desperate to win a second term of office.

The UPND can’t expect that the very people whose views they are so arrogantly and deliberately disrespecting will wake up early on August 13 next year to 8vote them back into office, that’s an impossibility, not the Zambians we know!

Bill 7 must be called out for what it is: a scheme to champion a narrow partisan agenda using women and youth opportunities as a smokescreen.

During a recent Members of Parliament workshop on Bill 7, the convenors failed to produce a delimitation report and show it to the honourable members of Parliament.

It’s deception of the highest order  to pretend to be marketing a delimitation process when you know the real intention and motivation is to serve your partisan interests to increase parliamentary seats from perceived strongholds.

If it’s not true that Government is banking on Bill 7 to bolster its chances to increase its numbers in parliament, we challenge the UPND administration and the Electoral Commission of Zambia to publish the delimitation report for the proposed 55 new constituencies.

It’s not true to claim that the delimitation report is a preserve of the Electoral Commission Zambia. It belongs to the people of Zambia, to the voters.

Unless the UPND administration are telling us that all MPs are under a spell of “Do as I say” and their ability to think independently has been suspended, we don’t see them reasonably voting for a Bill that has been rejected by their constituents.

Bill 7 if not withdrawn, is another self created animal joining a list of things working against the UPND’s fast dwindling popularity.

PF SAYS BURYING ECL IN SOUTH AFRICA AIMED AT PREVENTING NATIONAL UNREST

Patriotic Front (PF) Central Committee member Ephraim Shakafuswa has justified the family’s decision to inter the late former president Edgar Lungu in South Africa, rather than repatriating his body to Zambia.

He emphasized that while the decision has sparked considerable debate, it was made with Zambia’s stability and unity in mind.

Meanwhile, PF officials, leaders of opposition political parties, and Lusaka Archbishop Alick Banda have arrived in Pretoria to pay their final respects, joining mourners ahead of Mr. Lungu’s burial.

CLERGYMAN APPEALS TO HH TO GO WITH THE DEMANDS OF THE LUNGU FAMILY

CLERGYMAN APPEALS TO HH TO GO WITH THE DEMANDS OF THE LUNGU FAMILY

….so that the remains of former President Edgar Lungu would be repatriated back to Zambia

Lusaka… Monday June 23, 2025

A Lusaka based clergyman has called on President Hakainde Hichilema to heed to the Lungu family’s demands in order to repatriate the remains of the former Head of State.

Apostle Christopher Kunda of Presence of God Ministries in Lusaka, says it will not be right to have the former Republican President burried in a foreign country.

Apostle Kunda said it is not too late to negotiate with the family of Dr. Edgar Lungu to have his remains repatriated back to Zambia for a befitting send-off.

“My humble appeal to our Republican President Hakainde Hichilema is that, Mr President hear the demands of the Lungu family so that his remains would be brought back to Zambia. It would not be wise to have his remains buried in another country. I believe that if you Your Excellency (HH) listen to their (Lungu family) demands, we will sort out this matter and bury our President in Zambia and in dignity,” he said.

“It will not be well to bury President Lungu in South Africa. We will be laughed at by the outside world for failing to resolve such a matter of allowing a former Republican President buried in another country. I have friends who are already calling me that what is happening in your country. This is the time to resolve this impasse.”

Apostle Kunda said if the two parties agree, the government can facilitate the repatriation of the remains back to Zambia for a dignified send-off.

South Africa says allowing Lungu’s burial is not to disrespect Zambian government

South Africa says allowing Lungu’s burial is not to disrespect Zambian government

THE South African government says its decision to allow former president Edgar Lungu’s family to bury the former head of state in that country should not be seen as being disrespectful to the Zambian government and the nation at large.

According to that country’s department of international relations and cooperation spokesperson Chrispin Phiri, the South African government had no choice but to allow the Lungu’s to go ahead with their burial arrangements as they were residents of South Africa.

“But this also comes on the back of us having legal obligations to honour the family’s wishes, as they are resident in South Africa,” said Phiri.

“It should not be seen in any way as us not wishing to respect the Zambian government’s wishes or as being disrespectful to the Zambian nation as well.”

He added that South Africa had sent its minister of international relations and cooperation Ronald Lamola to convey that country’s condolences to President Hakainde Hichilema on the passing of Lungu.

Phiri said the visit was also aimed at Lamola acknowledging that his country was well aware of the importance of burying the former president in his country of birth.

“That was precisely the purpose of minister Ronald Ozzy Lamola’s visit to Lusaka, to firstly share the country’s condolences on the passing of President Lungu and also to say that South Africa does acknowledge the importance of a nation burying its former president,” he said.

According to reports, Lungu who died on June 5 this year, is scheduled to be laid to rest in South Africa tomorrow.

Let Us Mourn, But Let Us Also Remain Vigilant

Let Us Mourn, But Let Us Also Remain Vigilant

By Abraham Simpamba

Fellow citizens,

We bow our heads, our hearts are torn,
For Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, a father we mourn.
A leader, a patriot who lived to teach,
That the Constitution is sacred  beyond power’s reach.

But even as tears fall upon our land,
A shadow creeps with a hidden hand.
Bill 7 approaches, cloaked in calm,
Yet beneath its robe lies quiet harm.

Why now  in this season of sorrow?
Why thrust the blade before tomorrow?
What truth hides in this parliamentary show,
While a grieving nation is told not to know?

They whisper of new constituencies sweet on the tongue,
But where are the maps? Where are they drawn?
Where is the report the people must see?
Or is secrecy now the price of democracy?

A secret map is a loaded gun –
Once fired, the damage cannot be undone.
Lines carved in darkness can cut us away,
While our democracy quietly fades away.

We must not let grief become our blindfold,
We must not let silence be bought or sold.
Let us rise and echo Dr. Mwelwa’s cry:
“Before you touch the Constitution, touch the sky!”
“Touch the truth! Touch the people’s cry!”

To the Honourable Members — stand and decide:
Will you sell your honour or walk with pride?
Do not gamble with our children’s fate,
Do not lock the door when it’s far too late.

Demand the maps. Demand the facts.
Demand the hearings before they act.
Do not let Bill 7 pass in disguise,
Or tomorrow, you’ll meet your people’s eyes.

To the Zambian people: stay awake, stay strong.
We can mourn and march at the same time along.
Let no one steal your voice in this hour of pain,
Let no one draw your future with a secret chain.

Together we can. Ichalo Bantu!

United Capital Fertilizer Zambia Ignites First Boiler at Urea Plant – Marking The First Major Step Toward Commissioning

United Capital Fertilizer Zambia Ignites First Boiler at Urea Plant – Marking The First Major Step Toward Commissioning

Lusaka, Zambia – 20 June 2025

United Capital Fertilizer Zambia has reached a critical milestone in the construction and operationalisation of its ammonia and urea fertilizer plant, with the successful ignition of the first of three industrial boilers. This moment marks a key transition into the pre-commissioning phase of the plant and reflects significant progress on the journey to full-scale fertilizer production.

The ignition ceremony was a moment of pride and precision as engineers, technicians, and project managers witnessed the controlled ignition of Boiler One. The Boiler is now operational and supplying heat to the kilns, initiating the crucial drying process. This step is essential in removing all residual moisture from the kilns, ensuring that once coal is introduced, combustion will be efficient and uninterrupted.

This first boiler ignition is not just a technical achievement but a symbol of the plant’s growing readiness. Heating the kilns in stages over several months helps protect the equipment and allows the systems to gradually adapt to optimum operational temperatures. The safe and successful performance of this process is a major indicator that the plant is nearing readiness for commissioning.

Furthermore, Deputy Group CEO of Wonderful Group, Mr. Roy Mwamba, confirmed that Boiler Two is expected to be ignited in the coming weeks, further accelerating the momentum toward full operational capacity.

With this milestone, the plant now sits at 88% overall completion, with final stages including system testing, quality control checks, and full integration of the production line well underway.

Once fully operational, the plant will significantly add to the ongoing efforts to make Zambia self-sufficient in fertilizer production, removes reliance on imports, and enhance support for the country’s agriculture value chain.

This achievement reflects United Capital Fertilizer Zambia’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and long-term national impact in the agricultural sector.

Zambia’s Solar Shift: Mailo Solar Power Plant Injects 25MW into the Grid …And toasts successful pre-commissioning tests

Zambia’s Solar Shift: Mailo Solar Power Plant Injects 25MW into the Grid …And toasts successful pre-commissioning tests

Mailo Solar PV Power Plant located in Mailo Chiefdom in Serenje District has attained a significant milestone by injecting 25 Megawatts (MW) of solar energy into the Zambian electricity grid.

This achievement is another testament to the country’s concerted efforts to diversify its energy mix, assure resilience and attain energy security—an agenda vigorously pursued by President Hakainde Hichilema.

The 110MW solar plant, conceptualized through a partnership between Solar Century Africa and ZESCO Limited, sits on 204 hectares of land in Chief Mailo’s chiefdom. The project, which broke ground in July last year, has rapidly developed, with the first phase of work completed and tested in May this year.

“In terms of the timelines, we are planning to start clearing the site for phase two in July, which will take two months” says Solar Century Africa Project Manager, Eng. Gondai Moyana.

Beyond the 25MW in the first phase of the Mailo solar plant, the developers have already set their eyes and hands on achieving the next 35MW and then 50MW.

“Construction will start around September while completion of mechanical works and testing will be done by April to May next year. Soon after that, we will start the third phase of 50MW, which is likely to take a little bit longer because it will be the biggest portion of the project. Commissioning [of the 50MW] will be around 2027,” he added.

ZESCO is at the forefront of providing solutions to the current electricity challenges. The national power utility is aggressively seeking out private and public sector collaborations to address the energy deficit.

“Mailo Solar power plant is critical in our current situation and the future,” says Eng. Brian Kanyanga, Head of Renewables at ZESCO. “It will contribute to lessening the burden on our [hydro] power plants.”

The successful completion of the first phase of the Mailo Solar Power Plant demonstrates the trust and confidence the private sector has placed in ZESCO an implementing partner.

As more private sector players join the energy sustainability race, ZESCO ensures that the right technical soundness during development and before a project can release its electrons into the national grid.

“Not only have we verified the designs, but we have also contributed to grid integration to make sure that this plant seamlessly integrates into the national grid. As you know, solar is intermittent, so we need to make sure that the technology we are bringing on board does not destabilize the plant while we enjoy the benefits that come from it,” Eng. Kanyanga added.

With the target to reach 1,000MW of solar electricity by year-end to improve the national electricity supply, Zambia’s “Solar Explosion” story is on course and in full swing.

Democrats respond to Trump’s ceasefire announcement

Some US Democrats have been reacting to Trump’s claim of a ceasefire with mild praise.

“I give extremely high marks to this national security team and President Trump for managing this crisis,” Brett McGurk, former President Joe Biden’s Middle East coordinator, shared in an interview with CNN.

“But now let’s follow through. There’s a chance for diplomacy here,” he added.

“I’m glad that President Trump isn’t escalating further” Congresswoman Sara Jacobs wrote on X.

“But that doesn’t change the fact that bombing Iran was reckless, unconstitutional, and hurts US credibility to negotiate a permanent, verifiable deal.”

Israel agrees ceasefire after ‘eliminating Iran’s nuclear and missile threat’

The Israeli government says it agreed to the ceasefire proposal after “achieving the objectives” of its attacks on Iran.

According to the statement, Israel has removed Iran’s “dual immediate existential threat” from nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

It also says Israel has “inflicted severe damage on the military leadership, and destroyed dozens of central Iranian government targets”.

The statement goes on to say that Israeli forces, in the last day, have “severely struck government targets in the heart of Tehran, eliminating hundreds of Basij operatives” – a militia the Iranian government often uses to suppress protests – and “eliminating another senior nuclear scientist”.

“Israel thanks President Trump and the United States for their support in defence and their participation in eliminating the Iranian nuclear threat,” the statement adds.

AFRICAN POLITICIANS RELY ON WHATSAPP—BUT PEGASUS SPYWARE PROVES IT’S FAR FROM SAFE
………Digital Surveillance, Ignorance, and the New Age of Political Espionage in Africa

In an age where cyber warfare and digital surveillance shape modern politics, many African leaders continue to place their trust in popular foreign-owned apps like WhatsApp and Gmail for state communication. This dependence, while convenient, is proving to be a dangerous gamble.

Despite growing global awareness about digital espionage, a surprising number of African ministers, government officials, and even presidents rely on platforms that are vulnerable to sophisticated spyware like Pegasus, developed by the Israeli cyber-intelligence firm NSO Group. Ironically, many of these leaders publicly express fears of being spied on yet continue using the very tools that make them most vulnerable.

Lets try to breakdown things alittle, What Is Pegasus Spyware?

Pegasus is not just another computer virus. It is military-grade surveillance software sold exclusively to government agencies, allegedly for combating terrorism and serious crime. However, it has been repeatedly exposed as a tool used for political repression, targeting journalists, opposition leaders, human rights defenders, and diplomats worldwide.

Once installed on a smartphone, Pegasus gives the operator complete, remote access to the device without the user’s knowledge or consent. The spyware can:

1. Read encrypted messages from apps like WhatsApp, Signal, Gmail, Telegram, and iMessage

2. Record conversations by activating the microphone and camera

3. Access stored files, call logs, and real-time GPS locations

4. Collect browsing history, contact lists, passwords, and even keystrokes

5. Operate in stealth mode, leaving little or no trace of its existence

Even more alarming is that Pegasus doesn’t need any action from the target to be activated.

How Pegasus Infects Smartphones

Unlike older forms of malware that rely on users clicking on malicious links, Pegasus can infect devices through zero-click attacks, meaning no interaction is needed.

Here are the main methods used:

A. Zero-Click Exploits: The spyware can be injected through a missed call on WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Signal. Even if the user doesn’t answer, the spyware silently installs itself.

B. One-Click Phishing: In other cases, the victim receives a deceptive link via SMS or email. Clicking the link gives attackers full access.

C. Network Injection: When users connect to insecure or manipulated Wi-Fi or mobile networks, attackers can force spyware into the phone.

D. Compromised Software Updates: In rare but sophisticated cases, spyware has been delivered through fake or hijacked system updates.

These advanced techniques allow Pegasus to bypass even the latest mobile security defenses.

How to Know If Your Phone Is Infected

Spyware like Pegasus is designed to avoid detection. However, cybersecurity experts note certain symptoms that may indicate infection:

1. Unusual battery drain even with minimal use

2. Phone overheating or slow performance

3. Background noise during calls

4. Camera or microphone turning on by itself

5. Unexpected restarts or shutdowns

6. High data usage without explanation

7. Apps behaving strangely or crashing often

Most dangerously, many infected users report no symptoms at all, a silent invasion.

How to Check and Remove Spyware

If you suspect Pegasus or any spyware is on your device, here’s what to do:

1. Disconnect from the internet immediately.
2. Avoid logging into sensitive accounts from the suspected device.
3. Back up important data, but do not sync with cloud services.
4. Perform a factory reset. While Pegasus is resilient, this may remove some spyware.
5. Update your phone’s operating system. Security patches often fix known vulnerabilities.
6. Change all passwords from a clean device.
7. Avoid reinstalling suspicious apps or clicking links from unknown senders.
8. Seek professional cybersecurity help if you are a public figure or high-risk target.

Amnesty International’s Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT) is a specialized tool that can help detect traces of Pegasus, though it requires technical skills to use.

The Bobi Wine Case: How Pegasus Silenced a Movement

A well-documented case of Pegasus abuse occurred in Uganda. Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, became a symbol of youth-led political change as he challenged President Yoweri Museveni’s long-standing regime.

Ahead of the 2021 elections, Bobi Wine’s phone was reportedly infected with Pegasus. According to investigations, the spyware allowed state security to monitor his communications in real-time. Key campaign strategies were exposed. Coordinators were arrested before rallies even began. Protest logistics were thwarted.

Bobi Wine later said, “I was fighting an enemy who was already inside my house. Every message I sent, every call I made—they were already watching.”

The African Blind Spot: Digital Illiteracy in High Office

Despite growing evidence, many African leaders continue to use insecure platforms to handle sensitive government matters.

“Most politicians still believe WhatsApp is ‘safe’ because it’s encrypted,” says a Lusaka-based cybersecurity consultant. “They don’t understand that if Pegasus is on your phone, it bypasses encryption and it reads messages before they’re even encrypted.”

This digital illiteracy at high levels of power is creating national security risks, as confidential state communications may already be in the hands of foreign or domestic adversaries.

A Wake-Up Call

In the digital age, your smartphone is your most powerful tool and your greatest weakness.
For African leaders still conducting cabinet discussions on WhatsApp and sending sensitive emails via Gmail, the warning is clear: You are vulnerable.

Pegasus spyware has exposed the continent’s blind spot one that can no longer be ignored.

Until real digital reforms are made, African politics will remain at risk of being manipulated not just by votes or violence, but by invisible code hiding in a smartphone pocket.

Cape Town seeks to evict Congolese refugees demanding resettlement in Canada

Cape Town seeks to evict refugees demanding resettlement in Canada

The City of Cape Town has filed court papers to evict approximately 264 refugees from tented camps in Paint City, Bellville, and Wingfield, Maitland, where they have resided since 2020.

The group, primarily from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi, demands resettlement in Canada, rejecting local reintegration or repatriation to their home countries due to fears of violence and xenophobia.

The refugees were relocated from a city centre church protest during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, alongside the Departments of Home Affairs and Public Works, cites unlawful occupation and unsuccessful reintegration efforts as grounds for eviction under “Operation New Broom” to reclaim public spaces.

While some refugees accepted alternative housing or repatriation, others remain steadfast, claiming reintegration aid, such as R2,000 per family, is inadequate.

Refugees argue the South African government placed them in the camps and failed to provide viable solutions.

The UNHCR and city officials state international resettlement is not feasible. Meanwhile, South Africans on social media question why taxpayers should fund foreign nationals’ relocation abroad.

As tensions rise, the refugees await a court ruling, insisting they have nowhere safe to go.

Another Rumour, Paul Kagame is Seriously Ill

Another Rumour, Paul Kagame is Seriously Ill

It’s Season 4 of the “Kagame Is Dead” rumours, and like the previous three instalments, the suspense is high, the cast is familiar, and the script is getting more outrageous with each act.

For over a week now, President Paul Kagame has not been seen in public, fuelling speculation that the long-serving Rwandan leader may be gravely ill or even dead.

Unlike neighbouring South Sudan, where the presidency swiftly quashes death hoaxes about Salva Kiir, the Rwandan establishment at Village Urugwiro has once again chosen silence—a gesture many now read as calculated, if not contemptuous.

There has been no official denial or comment from the government.

This isn’t new. Kagame’s invisibility has previously triggered regional gossip, most memorably in January 2014, when wild reports about his death gripped media outlets and social networks.

A fake Facebook post was said to have started the rumour, but it quickly caught fire, with Rwandan exiles and hostile Congolese citizens carrying coffins in mock funerals.

As an editor in Kigali back then, I handled stories from the presidency. The mood inside the establishment didn’t support the fevered speculation. Yet, outside, even relatively informed agitators like the Kampala-based blogger Tom Voltaire Okwalinga (TVO) believed they had confirmed Kagame’s death. His argument was simple: you can’t hide the death of a sitting head of state.

Kagame later appeared at a military event and quipped about his rumoured demise. That humour, however, has not returned this time—at least not yet.

The last time Kagame was publicly active was on June 6, 2025, when he posted Eid al-Adha greetings on X. Days before that, he had wrapped up a state visit to Algeria, touring the National School of Artificial Intelligence in Algiers. Since then—nothing.

The vacuum has emboldened his critics and turned cyberspace into a theatre of speculation.

Himbara Unleashed

David Himbara, Kagame’s former economic advisor turned fierce critic in exile, has dominated the rumour mill with a series of biting blog posts. Once an insider at the highest level—principal private secretary and later head of strategy in Kagame’s presidency—Himbara now brands Rwanda a “ridiculous” state where “a head of state disappears and no explanation is given.”

“Rwanda is a joke,” he writes, adding that Prime Minister Édouard Ngirente is a mere figurehead, while cabinet affairs minister Ines Mpambara allegedly answers to First Lady Jeanette Kagame.

According to Himbara, Jeanette is today’s Kanjogera—the scheming power behind the throne.

To cap his disdain for Kagame’s Kigali, Himbara penned a deeply sarcastic open letter wishing Kagame a “speedy recovery,” signing off as a concerned former strategist despite “past battles” marked by “state violence” against him.

But Himbara’s core message isn’t sentimentality—it’s succession. In his assessment, Rwanda is on autopilot, and the man most likely to be parachuted in to stabilise the regime is Donald Kaberuka, the former finance minister and ex-AfDB president, now running the Kigali-based advisory outfit SouthBridge.

To Himbara, Kaberuka is more than a potential technocratic successor; he is Kagame’s long-time enabler and financial fixer. From helping launder Congo’s looted resources during Rwanda’s DR Congo incursions, to allegedly siphoning off donor aid, Himbara paints Kaberuka as the regime’s go-to man for credibility and cover.

He goes as far as suggesting Kagame could “engineer a coup against himself” to reintroduce Kaberuka as a stabilising force.

From Epitaphs to Deepfakes

While Rwanda’s silent corridors hum with mystery, its neighbours—particularly the Congolese—are not holding back.

In Goma and Bukavu, online platforms are littered with satirical eulogies, memes, and mock obituaries for the Rwandan leader. Some are celebratory, others conspiratorial, a few bitterly poetic.

Simon Pierre Gahamanyi, a Rwandan exile and well-known anti-Kigali voice, has spun the tale even further. In his version, Kagame died long ago, replaced by a body double, complete with high-tech voice synthesis.

He claims Kagame’s daughter Ange once harboured presidential ambitions but was sidelined by infighting after her father’s alleged passing.

Gahamanyi asserts that Rwanda’s ruling elite, too fractured and paranoid to trust a successor, chose collective rule—keeping their positions but abandoning the idea of an official presidency.

In this shadowy drama, Ange married hastily when it became clear her father was dying, her dreams of statecraft dashed.

“The Kagame you see is a double,” he says. “The generals are all killers. Each fears the other. That’s why there’s no new president.”

He also suggests that the regime may fake Kagame’s death—or resurrection—to avoid political concessions under pressure from US President Donald Trump, who is reportedly pushing for Rwanda’s withdrawal from eastern Congo.

A Distraction or a Deception?

Roger Rachidi, a Congolese political commentator, sees the Kagame death rumours not as truth or hoax, but as manipulation.

He argues that the Rwandan regime itself may be fanning the speculation to derail recent diplomatic gains between Kinshasa and Washington, including pressure to withdraw Rwandan troops and M23 affiliates from Congolese territory.

“It’s a smokescreen,” he says. “The regime is orchestrating false rumours to stall diplomatic pressure and sabotage DRC-USA progress.”

In this reading, Rwanda’s silence isn’t incompetence—it’s strategy. By letting the rumour mill spin, Kigali keeps everyone guessing and off-balance, including regional powers and donors.

The Verdict?

Whether Kagame is ill, resting, tactically absent, or something more dramatic, what’s undeniable is the extent to which his person has become the axis of the region’s political and psychological balance. Cue when Ugandans went ballistic with rumours of his death at the height of Rwanda-Uganda tensions in the pandemic stream.

In his absence—real or perceived—the country appears suspended in uncertainty, and the region enters a cycle of speculative frenzy.

And in this speculative theatre, everyone has a role: the bitter exile, the fallen insider, the suspicious neighbour, and the grieving daughter who may—or may not—exist in the corridors of power.

Until Kagame reappears, jokes, or waves off the noise, Season 4 continues. Whether it’s drama or deception, Rwanda’s silent stage keeps everyone watching.

WHY ENALA PHIRI WAS DROPPED AS COPPER QUEENS ASSISTANT COACH

WHY ENALA PHIRI WAS DROPPED AS COPPER QUEENS ASSISTANT COACH

At the 2024 COSAFA Women’s Championship, Copper Queens assistant coach Enala Phiri engaged in a public spat with then stand-in head coach Florence Mwila. The clash was so bad that Mwila has since refused to work with Enala.

When coach Nora Hauptle took firm charge of the team in February 2025, she wanted to appoint her own assistants not those assigned to her by the FA. Her due diligence help her establish which coaches would be worthy her plans.

The FA insisted that at least two local coaches should be part of the technical bench.

Then came Charles Halubono and Enala Phiri who were then deployed to the team. Both eyed the same job but fell behind her during interviews.

So, when Nora took over she knew exactly what she walked into. Nora has found it untenable to work with Enala partly because of her poor emotional intelligence.

In addition to emotional outbursts and superiority complex, Nora, although truant herself, believes Enala is divisive and may not be a good addition to promoting team spirit.

According to those close to Nora, Enala has been inciting some senior players to frustrate her work.

The defeat suffered against Botswana and South Africa were not seen as isolated based on her assessment.

Enala, who is believed to have some level of influence on some senior players, was fingered deploying underhand methods to frustrate Nora.

Generally, those who have worked with Enala say she is disrespectful to authority and often thrives on threatening other coaches or even her employers to an extent of undermining her collaborators.

Under coach Nora, Enala sees herself as the most qualified coach who should be in charge of the team, not otherwise.

Yesterday, Enala who enjoys some peculiar relationship with some individuals seen as close to the current FAZ leadership had an article published on social media using her blogger allies suggesting she was sidelined because she was too qualified than the head coach.

In essence, Nora believes Enala was not part of the Copper Queens technical bench to foster unity, but division.

In Nora’s view, going with Enala to the WAFCON 2025 had the potential to create a toxic environment on the technical bench and eventually in the team.

So, Nora made a decision and asked the FAZ secretariat through the office of the technical director to re-assign her as her services with the Copper Queens were not needed at the moment.

Enala recently signed a contract with Konkola Blades Queens FC after leaving ZISD FC midway through the season last year.

EDITOR’S NOTE: You may have better qualifications on the job, but a poor attitude undermining authority can be your undoing.

Floyd Shivambu slams Malema’s tight grip on EFF

Floyd Shivambu slams Malema’s tight grip on EFF

Former EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu has once again criticised Julius Malema’s leadership style, saying the Economic Freedom Fighters functioned as a “one-man show” during his time in the party.

Shivambu says the organisation’s direction, public image, and internal operations were tightly controlled by Malema, leaving little room for other leaders to contribute meaningfully.

“One person decided the character, content, and direction of the organisation,” Shivambu said. “Even when I had better explanations at press briefings, he would insist on being the only one to speak even on issues he didn’t fully grasp.”

Shivambu reflected on his 11 years in the party, claiming that despite his senior role, he was sidelined publicly.

“The only time I’d speak at a press conference was when a journalist asked if I was planning to contest him. Then I’d be forced to answer.”

Dismissing the notion that he was merely echoing Malema’s views, Shivambu said:

“That’s not true. For a large part of the EFF’s life, we gave it ideological direction. But its operational structure was far too centralised to be truly democratic.”

He also blamed this centralisation for the EFF’s failure to attract strong leadership at local, provincial, and national levels.

“Just look at the composition of the caucuses it’s hard to find depth. That’s the result of one person trying to control everything.”

Zelensky question Putin why he’s condemning US’s strike on Iran when Moscow continues to strike Ukraine

Ukrainian president, Zelensky has sent another interesting message to Russia after Putin critisize recent action taken by the United States.

According to him, Russian leaders should be the least to critisize the recent strike on Iran because of their own history of strikes.

Zelensky argued that there was lots of critisms from Russia after the US strike but have been silent about their own actions towards Ukraine for over a year now.

In an X post, Zelensky wrote:

“After the strikes on Iran’s nuclear program facilities, there was a lot of uproar from Moscow — the Russian leadership performatively condemned the “missile-and-bomb” actions. Today, Moscow is silent after the Russian army carried out a completely cynical strike using Russian-Iranian Shahed drones and missiles against civilian infrastructure in Kyiv and other cities and communities of ours. In Kyiv alone, 5 apartment buildings were damaged — ordinary residential homes. So far, 6 people have been reported killed. Another person was killed in Bila Tserkva, Kyiv region, where a Shahed struck a hospital. My condolences to all their families and loved ones.

Rescuers are currently clearing the rubble and providing assistance wherever it is needed. The strike damaged sites in four regions. In total, 352 drones were launched, including 159 Shaheds just overnight, along with 16 missiles. Preliminary reports indicate that ballistic weapons from North Korea were also used. A large number of drones and missiles were shot down by our air defenders — but not all.”

He went on to advice all neighboring countries within Russia, Iran and North Korea should think carefully about whether they could protect lives if the ongoing conflicts continue to excalate,

And everyone in countries neighbouring Russia, Iran, and North Korea should be thinking carefully about whether they could protect lives if this coalition of murderers persists and continues spreading their terror. Today, during my visit to the United Kingdom, I will be discussing this very issue with our partners — our defense, which must become the foundation of a much stronger collective security. We will also be negotiating new and powerful steps to increase pressure on Russia for this war and to put an end to the strikes.”

Zelensky revealed Ukraine is preparing a joint defence decision with UK and European Union

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated that Ukraine is working on a joint defense initiative with the United Kingdom and the European Union.

In an X post, Zelenskyy referenced preparations for “joint decisions for defense” with the UK and EU, notably excluding mention of the United States.

This aligns with broader European efforts to bolster security cooperation in response to Russia’s ongoing aggression and shifting transatlantic dynamics, particularly following the U.S. suspension of military aid to Ukraine.

Sources highlight intensified UK-EU defense collaboration since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

A new UK-EU defense and security treaty, announced in aims to enhance cooperation on Ukraine support, military mobility, and countering hybrid threats, though it lacks a substantive framework for defense industrial integration.

The EU has also committed significant military support to Ukraine, including €11.1 billion through the European Peace Facility by January 2025, with plans to double heavy caliber ammunition deliveries later.

Additionally, Ukraine has been involved in EU defense initiatives, such as training missions under the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), with over 70,000 Ukrainian troops trained since 2022.

All this could mean that Zelenskyy’s statement refers to ongoing negotiations to deepen Ukraine’s integration into European defense frameworks, potentially involving joint procurement, industrial cooperation, or security commitments.

Iran says America and Israel have now crossed the red line

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has responded to the recent attackaumched on Iran’s nuclear facilities by the United States.

The minister stated that the United States and Israel crossed a “very big red line” by attacking three Iranian nuclear facilities—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfaha.

This follows U.S. military strikes, confirmed by President Donald Trump, which targeted these sites, with Israel launching coordinated attacks starting weeks ago .

Iran condemned the strikes as a violation of international law, including the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and vowed to respond by all means necessary.

Araghchi accused the U.S. of betraying diplomacy and warned of “everlasting consequences,” while heading to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Iran has already retaliated with missile strikes on Israel, targeting sites like Ben Gurion Airport, with further escalation feared as the conflict enters its second week.

Iranian Foreign Minister visits Putin in Moscow to discuss issues surrounding U.S’ airstrikes on Iran

0

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has paid an official visit to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The pair met in Moscow on June 23, 2025, following United States’ airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

The meeting focused on coordinating Iran’s response to the strikes, which both leaders condemned as illegitimate and a violation of international law.

Araghchi delivered a letter from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, seeking stronger Russian support amid escalating tensions with the U.S. and Israel.

Putin emphasized Russia’s efforts to assist Iran but stopped short of committing to military aid, citing Russia’s ongoing involvement in Ukraine.

The talks underscored the strategic partnership between Tehran and Moscow, with Iran expecting Russia to play a role in multilateral forums like the U.N. Security Council.

Iran warns that it would k!ll 50,000 American soldiers in revenge for Trump’s actions

Iran has issued a stark warning, vowing to target up to 50,000 U.S. soldiers in retaliation for recent American airstrikes on its nuclear facilities.

The threat comes after President Donald Trump, in a fiery post on Truth Social on June 22, 2025, called for regime change in Tehran, amplifying fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East.

Anchor Mehdi Khanalizadeh, speaking on Iranian state TV, warned of severe consequences, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said diplomacy is off the table until Iran responds.

State media and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared U.S. troops and assets in the region “legitimate targets.”

“The 40,000 – 50,000 American Soldiers in the region are now legitimate targets. Every American Citizen & Soldier is a legitimate target. Even the Presidency of Trump will not be in existence,” Mehdi said on live TV.

“The President or the United States, the man in the Oval Office chose to receive the coffins of 40,000 – 50,000 U.S. soldiers in Washington,” he continued.

The U.S. strikes, dubbed Operation Midnight Hammer, hit Iran’s key nuclear sites—Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan—on June 21, 2025.

Trump claimed the attacks “completely obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capabilities, a move he said was necessary to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

The operation involved 125 aircraft, including B-2 bombers dropping massive bunker-busting bombs, and submarines launching Tomahawk missiles, according to the Pentagon.

Some prisoners reportedly fled after Israel struck Iran’s famous Evin prison known for holding political and foreign nationals

Israel hasconducted airstrikes targeting Tehran’s Evin Prison, a notorious facility known for holding political prisoners, dissidents, journalists, and foreign nationals.

The Israeli military, as confirmed by Defense Minister Israel Katz, struck the prison’s entrance gate and nearby administrative buildings, causing significant damage, including a gaping hole in the entrance and partial collapse of perimeter walls.

The IDF stated the strike was part of a broader campaign targeting “regime targets and agencies of government repression” in Tehran, aimed at undermining Iran’s oppressive infrastructure.

Iranian authorities, via the judiciary’s Mizan news agency, reported the situation was under control and measures were taken to ensure prisoner safety, though state media acknowledged damage and casualties.

There have been reports claiming that hundreds of the political prisoners escape, but the exact number of the people in reports remain unverified.

The strike carried symbolic weight, as Evin is a potent symbol of Iran’s domestic repression, criticized globally for human rights abuses, including torture and arbitrary detention.

Israel’s targeting of the prison was described as a message against Iran’s regime, though the IDF emphasized precision to avoid harming prisoners, focusing on outer walls.

U.S. House of Representatives officially bans the use of WhatsApp on all official devices

0

United States house of Representatives have announced a ban of WhatsApp on all government-issued devices.

The communicue, issued today June 23, cited cybersecurity concerns as the reason for their decision.

The House’s Office of Cybersecurity deemed WhatsApp high-ris citing a lack of transparency in data protection, absence of stored data encryption, and potential security risks.

Staff were instructed to remove WhatsApp from mobile, desktop, and web platforms and use alternatives.

Some alternatives suggested are Microsoft Teams, Amazon’s Wickr, Signal, Apple’s iMessage, or FaceTime.

Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, disagreed with the decision, emphasizing that WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption offers stronger security than some approved apps.

US calls on China to speak to Iran not to close Strait of Hormuz because it’ll disrupt global oil flows

1

The U.S. has urged China to dissuade Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil trade route.

Iran is angry and threatening to close the strait with their decision taken following U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that closing the strait would be “economic suicide” for Iran, as it heavily relies on oil exports, with nearly 80% going to China.

The strait handles about 20% of global oil consumption, and any disruption could spike oil prices and destabilize economies, particularly affecting China, India, and Japan.

Iran’s parliament approved a resolution to close the strait, but the final decision rests with its Supreme National Security Council.

Analysts warn that while Iran could disrupt shipping, the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain could swiftly counter any blockade, though some suggest the market underestimates the potential duration of disruptions.

China, a key Iranian ally, is unlikely to support actions that harm its oil supply, and Beijing has called for a ceasefire in response to U.S. actions.

Israel Defense Force confirm fresh attack on Iran’s Basij headquarters and 5 other Iranian facilities today

0

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has provided a major update on their recent strike against Iran.

The Israel Defense Force revealed they conducted strikes on June 23, 2025, targeting the Basij headquarters in Tehran, among other sites in Iran.

Confirming this in an X post, IDF Claim they hit the Basij headquarters, Evin Prison, the “Destruction of Israel” clock in Palestine Square, and the Internal Security Headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The Basij, a paramilitary volunteer militia under the IRGC, is often used for internal security and suppression of dissent in Iran.

The Israeli military confirmed that they have damaged operations in the six places they struck.

These strikes were part of a broader Israeli operation targeting Iranian military and regime infrastructure, including nuclear facilities, missile bases, and other security-related sites.

The conflict continues to evolve, with both sides exchanging missile strikes and Israel claiming to have degraded Iran’s military capabilities significantly.

Vladimir Putin says there was “no justification” for the US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites, labelling the attack as “unprovoked aggression”

0

Russian President Vladimir Putin sharply criticized the United States for its recent bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities, calling the attacks “absolutely unprovoked aggression” with “no basis or justification.”

The remarks came during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi at the Kremlin on Monday, two days after U.S. forces targeted three key Iranian nuclear sites Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

Speaking directly to Araqchi, Putin expressed solidarity with Iran, stating, “The absolutely unprovoked aggression against Iran has no basis and no justification whatsoever.”

“For our part, we are making efforts to assist the Iranian people. I am very glad that you are in Moscow today; this will give us the opportunity to discuss all these pressing issues and think together about how we could get out of today’s situation.”

Araqhchi, in response, thanked Russia for its stance, emphasizing the strategic partnership between the two nations.

“Russia is today on the right side of history and international law,” he said, adding that Iran was acting in “legitimate self-defense” following the U.S. strikes.

He also conveyed greetings from Iran’s Supreme Leader and President, underscoring the close ties between Moscow and Tehran.

The U.S. strikes, which President Donald Trump described as a “spectacular military success” that “completely and totally obliterated” Iran’s nuclear enrichment capabilities.

Democrats call for the impeachment of President Trump after the US bombed three Iranian nuclear sites

0

Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has demanded the impeachment of President Donald Trump following the U.S. bombing of three Iranian nuclear facilities on June 22, escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Ocasio-Cortez called the strikes a “grave violation of the Constitution,” and condemned the operation as impulsive. She also warned it risks entangling the U.S. in a prolonged conflict.

She wrote that the attack provides grounds for Trump to be impeached since his actions could launch a war.

The U.S. operation, named “Midnight Hammer,” targeted Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear facilities, with B-2 stealth bombers deploying “bunker-buster” bombs.

Trump hailed the strikes as a “spectacular military success” that crippled Iran’s nuclear program, but Iranian officials downplayed the damage, insisting their nuclear activities remain peaceful.

The attack marks a sharp escalation in U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict, fueling fears of a broader regional war.

Shivambu accuses MK Spokesperson of drug abuse

Shivambu accuses MK Spokesperson of drug abuse

In a fiery eNCA interview today, Monday, former MK Party Secretary-General Floyd Shivambu unleashed a barrage of accusations against party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela, alleging substance abuse and always drunk.

Shivambu described Ndhlela as a “fool” who is “always on drugs and high on alcohol,” escalating tensions within the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

The allegations form part of Shivambu’s broader claims that members of Jacob Zuma’s inner circle are siphoning off party funds, reportedly embezzling R7 million monthly.

The interview, which aired this afternoon, June 23, has sparked intense debate, with social media platforms buzzing with reactions.

Some users condemned Shivambu’s remarks as defamatory, while others called for investigations into the serious claims.

The MK Party has yet to issue an official response to Shivambu’s accusations.
