Girl Friend’ Can Inherit – Court

‘Girl Friend’ Can Inherit – Court
By Dickson Jere

A Nigerian – married man – had a girlfriend whom he looked after, including paying for her flat in Kabwata. He later took her to his family and went through a purported traditional marriage with her while he was still married to his wife. He had three Children with the same woman before he died.

His wife – whom he married under statutory marriage – was appointed Administrator of her late husband estate. She then distributed some of the properties leaving out the girlfriend and the three children. She claimed she did not know of their existence and testified that she had lived with her husband since they got married in 1971.

The girlfriend sued his wife who was the Administrator, claiming that she was also entitled to the estate as second wife or dependant, including her children. She testified that he had stopped her from working so that she can remain at home where he provided everything for her.

After hearing the case, the High Court ruled she was not his second wife as he was already married under statute when he purportedly married her in the village. Therefore, there was no marriage between the two even though they even lived together in the Kabwata flat.
However, the Court ruled that she was nevertheless entitled to 10% of the estate as a “dependant” since he maintained her.

This prompted his widow to appeal to the Supreme Court, arguing that a “mistress” cannot inherit from the estate of the deceased. She argued that the law on ‘dependant’ was meant for only close relatives who were maintained by the deceased.

The Supreme Court, having heard the appeal, held thus;

“In our view, this evidence clearly established that the deceased was living with the Respondent (girlfriend) and that he actually maintained her,” the Judges noted.

The Court looked at the definition of “dependant” under the Intestate Succession Act, which states that dependant is a “person who was maintained by that deceased immediately prior to his death” and lived with that person.

“We uphold the learned trial Judge that the Respondent was a dependant within the meaning of section 3 of the Act,” the Judges ruled, adding that parliament would have limited the definition if that was the intention.

The Court also ordered that children from the girlfriend should also inherit equally from the estate of the deceased with his other children from his wife.

Case citation- Oparaocha v Murambiwa – (2004) ZR 141(SC).

Lecture Notes;

  1. This case dealt with definition of dependant under the Intestate Succession Act and the Court ruled that the term goes beyond relatives so long as you can prove that you were maintained by the deceased and lived with him. Or alternatively, you were a child whose education was dependant on the deceased.
  2. This case also underscores the legal principle that once married under the Act, and you contract a second marriage even under customary law, that second marriage is invalid.

Peter Mutharika’s 2025 presidential bid confirmed: Collects nomination papers

On Sunday, 15 June 2025, the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officially unveiled the nomination form for its presidential candidate, His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

This announcement was communicated through the party’s official Facebook page, marking a definitive moment in Malawi’s political calendar as the country heads toward the 2025 general elections.

Airtel Malawi
The submission of the nomination form signals the DPP’s confidence in the leadership of its former president and ex-head of state, who served from 2014 to 2020.

Professor Mutharika’s return to the political frontline has been the subject of speculation for months, with some viewing it as a strategic move to consolidate the party’s base and reclaim lost ground.

The timing of the nomination, exactly a year after the 2024 Tonse Alliance’s midterm turbulence, underscores a calculated effort by the DPP to present a familiar and tested alternative to the ruling coalition.

Critics, however, have raised questions about Mutharika’s age and whether he embodies the generational change many Malawians have been calling for, especially given the recent deaths of prominent politicians and rising youth activism.

Nevertheless, his loyalists argue that his experience, international stature, and understanding of Malawi’s economic challenges make him a stabilizing force amid the country’s ongoing social and financial uncertainty.

The release of the nomination form on social media also reflects the party’s attempt to modernize its communication strategy, reaching both its grassroots supporters and tech-savvy urban voters.

In terms of internal party dynamics, this development suggests that the DPP has managed to overcome factional tensions and unify around its most recognizable figure.

The post has already sparked heated debates online, with supporters praising the return of “APM” and detractors warning against recycling old leadership.

Going forward, all eyes will be on how the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) responds to this nomination and whether other parties will accelerate their own internal processes to catch up.

The DPP’s formal endorsement of Mutharika now sets the stage for a highly contested election, likely to be shaped by themes of legacy, renewal, and economic recovery.

Trump told Israel not to assassinate Iran’s supreme leader  Ayatollah Ali Khamene

US president Donald Trump rejected a plan by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to assassinate Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, three sources have told CBS, the BBC’s American news partner.

in a conversation reportedly happened after Israel launched its strikes on Iran on Friday, Trump told Netanyahu that assassinating Khamenei was not a good idea, the sources said. Trump has not commented publicly on the report.

During an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu did not directly confirm or deny a report from Reuters that Trump had vetoed a plan to killed the ayatollah.

“There’s so many false reports of conversations that never happened and I’m not going to get into that,” the Israeli prime minister said.

“But I can tell you I think we do what we need to do. We will do what we need to do and I think the United States knows what is good for the United States and I’m just not going to get into it.”

Beyoncé’s Foundation Awarding $10K Grants to Black-Owned Salons and Barbershops

Beyoncé, her mom Tina Knowles, and her BeyGOOD Foundation have all partnered with her haircare brand Cécred to award $10,000 grants to salon and barbershop owners across the U.S.

The program aimed to support licensed hairstylists, barbers, and cosmetologists who faced financial struggles and needed help growing their businesses. The Cécred x BeyGOOD fund accepted applications from experienced beauty professionals with proof of shop ownership or lease agreements for chairs, booths, or suites. It focused on those with at least two years in the industry who needed financial help.

This second round awarded 37 grants from a $500,000 fund, expanding the program beyond its earlier five-city limit. Finalists who didn’t receive grants still gained access to group coaching and support for Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification.

Winners also received free business tools and resources through the National Minority Supplier Development Council, according to Black Enterprise.

The foundation highlighted the impact of hairstylists in their communities, calling salons “sacred spaces” for self-expression. Earlier, the fund launched $130,000 in cosmetology scholarships during Cécred’s February 2024 debut as part of its ongoing mission to uplift beauty professionals and future entrepreneurs.

Trump Now Says That He Will Stop Deporting Illegal Immigrants who Work on Farms

After days of deploying troops to Los Angeles to deal with immigration riots, President Trump is now saying that he plans to ease his administration’s strict deportation policies to address a growing farm labor shortage caused by mass immigration raids. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he is considering changes to protect undocumented workers in agriculture, hospitality, and leisure industries—sectors he acknowledged have been hit hard by the deportation of long-term employees. The statement marks a significant shift in tone from his prior hardline stance on undocumented immigrants.

USA Today reports that Trump’s comments follow reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have recently expanded arrests to include non-violent undocumented workers, not just those with criminal records. “Our great Farmers and people in the Hotel and Leisure business have been stating that our very aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long-time workers away from them,” Trump wrote. He acknowledged that these workers are often irreplaceable and have contributed decades of labor.

While Trump blamed the labor shortage on President Biden’s “open borders policy,” critics pointed out the contradiction in his message. “Step 1: Trump creates a problem. Step 2: Blames it on Joe Biden, who isn’t even president. Step 3: Posts a rant about his solution — which doesn’t actually offer a solution,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal posted on X. She added, “Yes, our country and economy rely on immigrants. How is he just figuring that out?”

Trump said he is working on an executive order that will take a “common-sense” approach to the issue. “We can’t take farmers, take all their people and send them back because they don’t have maybe what they’re supposed to have,” he said during a White House event. He added that many of these workers “have turned out to be great,” despite lacking legal status.

Roughly 42% of U.S. farm workers between 2020 and 2022 were undocumented, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Yet under Trump’s second term, ICE has ramped up deportations to 3,000 arrests per day, more than triple earlier quotas. The crackdown has triggered chaotic scenes across the country, including tactical raids on restaurants and farms in California.

Adding to the controversy, the Trump Organization itself has a history of employing undocumented labor. A 2019 Washington Post investigation found that at least 48 current and former Trump property employees—including housekeepers, waiters, and landscapers—were undocumented. Despite the crackdown, Trump’s latest remarks suggest a softening of that policy when business interests are at stake.

Elon Musk Threatens to Sue Black Congressman For Calling Him a “Thief” and a “Nazi”

Elon Musk has threatened to sue former congressman Jamaal Bowman after Bowman called him an “incompetent thief” and a “Nazi” during a CNN interview. Musk’s response comes amid ongoing criticism of his leadership and actions.During a segment on NewsNight with Abby Phillip, Bowman stated, “The American people don’t trust Elon Musk. He’s incompetent. He’s a thief. He’s a Nazi.” Phillip quickly distanced herself from Bowman’s remarks, clarifying that his views were his own.

According to Atlanta Black Star, Republican political operative Thomas Hern reacted on X, suggesting a lawsuit was likely. He posted, “Jamaal Bowman just called Elon Musk an ‘incompetent thief’ and ‘Nazi.’ A lawsuit waiting to happen.” Musk responded a day later, saying, “I’ve had enough. Lawsuit inbound.”

Musk’s supporters, including Utah Senator Mike Lee, urged him to take legal action, with Lee saying, “Defamation against conservatives can’t go unaddressed.” Podcaster Ian Miles Cheong also demanded an apology from Bowman, arguing that such comments could damage Musk’s reputation.

It’s unclear whether Musk will proceed with a lawsuit or what damages he might pursue. The controversy adds to Musk’s ongoing challenges, including scrutiny over his management of Tesla and other ventures. Critics have also pointed out Musk’s past actions, such as a gesture resembling a Nazi salute.

Some have questioned Musk’s commitment to free speech, pointing out his past defense of others’ right to speak freely despite harsh criticism. Critics have pointed out the seeming contradiction between Musk’s free speech advocacy and his threat to sue Bowman.

VIDEO: Alleged shooter performs unhinged dance as he gets ‘excited about Jesus’

The man suspected of killing two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses was caught on video dancing as he said he was “excited about God.”

In a 2021 video unearthed by Blue Georgia, Vance Boelter could be seen giving a speech to a church in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“And I’m just as excited about Jesus!” Boelter shouted. “And when I get excited, and when I get excited, I want to dance. I want to dance. And what Jesus did for me, Oh, Jesus is God! Almighty God! He saved my life! Woo!”

“I’m excited about God!” he continued. “Oh, I want to want to love God. Because he’s coming again and he’s excited. And he’s got plans. He has plans and purposes. And the design for each one of you. And for me!”

Speaking on Meet the Press on Sunday, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) linked the shootings to Boelter’s religious ideology.

“It was politically motivated, and there clearly was some through line with abortion because of the groups that were on the list and other things that I’ve heard were in this manifesto,” she said.

‘No Kings’ protests held across U.S. as Americans reject Trump’s leadership style

In an extensive show of dissent, Americans from coast to coast flooded streets, plazas, and parks on Saturday to protest President Donald Trump’s leadership, denouncing what organizers call a drift toward authoritarianism.

Branded under the slogan “No Kings,” the protests unfolded in hundreds of cities and towns, blending urgent calls for democratic values, immigrant rights, and civil liberties. The movement’s message was clear: the United States rejects the notion of a monarch-like presidency.

“Today, across red states and blue, rural towns and major cities, Americans stood in peaceful unity and made it clear: we don’t do kings,” said the No Kings Coalition in a statement released after the demonstrations.

Cities like New York, Seattle, Denver, and Atlanta saw tens of thousands gather, many waving American flags, chanting slogans, and brandishing signs such as “fight oligarchy” and “deport the mini-Mussolinis.” Atlanta’s event quickly hit capacity with thousands more rallying outside, while Seattle drew over 70,000 attendees, according to local officials.

Trump remained in Washington, D.C., presiding over a military celebration for the Army’s 250th anniversary, which coincided with his birthday. Just miles away, demonstrators in Logan Circle chanted “Trump must go now” and cheered as a golden-toilet caricature puppet of the president was wheeled through the crowd.

Demonstrations were mostly peaceful but not without incident. In Los Angeles and Portland, tensions flared as police deployed tear gas and crowd-control projectiles after events formally ended. In Salt Lake City, a downtown shooting during a march left one person critically injured and three people in custody, including the suspected shooter, AP reported.

Police Chief Brian Redd said the motive was unclear, noting, “The shooter appeared to be walking alongside the group of thousands who were marching.” Authorities are investigating whether the incident was politically driven.

In Culpepper, Virginia, a driver rammed his SUV into a dispersing crowd. The 21-year-old behind the wheel was arrested and charged with reckless driving.

Despite moments of unrest, the energy at many rallies was defiant and creative. In California, demonstrators waved upside-down American flags, raised Trump piñatas wearing crowns, and danced to music, including a remix of “Y.M.C.A.” featuring the lyric change: “young man” to “con man.” A Bolivian immigrant, C.C. Téllez, declared, “If there was space for me, I think there’s a way for everybody else to belong here as well.”

In Austin, Texas, state troopers locked down the Capitol grounds following a “credible threat” to lawmakers planning to attend. One suspect was later detained. Still, the rally went forward, opened by “War Pigs” blaring over loudspeakers.

Melissa Johnson, who drove 90 minutes to attend the protest in Jackson, Mississippi, said, “We are losing the thread of democracy in our country.” Protesters there waved signs, wore tinfoil crowns, and invited drivers to “Honk if you never text war plans.”

Emotions ran high. Tony Cropper, who traveled from Tennessee, said, “To see so many folks out here that aren’t black or brown fighting for the same causes… makes me very emotional.”

Elsewhere, like in Charlotte, marchers carried a giant Mexican flag and shouted, “No kings. No crowns. We will not bow down.” For many, the event was about reclaiming democracy and resisting fear.

Peter Varadi, a former Trump supporter, now marched with a combined U.S.-Mexican flag: “I voted for Donald Trump, and now I regret that… They’re coming for everybody.”

Even late into the evening, downtown areas remained crowded. Vendors, many immigrants themselves, sold food as music played. But calm turned chaotic outside a federal building when police moved in on horseback, using batons and wood rods to clear the area.

In Portland, police labeled protests outside a federal immigration office a “riot” and used tear gas, flash bangs, and rubber bullets. At least two were detained.

Mike Pence hits Trump for using military on protesters while pardoning J6ers

Former Vice President Mike Pence slammed his former boss, President Donald Trump, for using the military on anti-ICE protesters despite pardoning the January 6 rioters.

“FBI director, Kash Patel, warned to U.S., to L.A. protesters, rather, he said, hit a cop, you’re going to jail,” CNN’s Dana Bash told Pence on Sunday. “This is from a director who supported the president pardoning all the rioters, including the ones who beat up police officers who are defending the Capitol, defending you on January 6th.”

“It’s a correct statement,” Pence replied. “We simply cannot allow or stand by while people in the midst of protests, assault, law enforcement officers.”

“It’s one of the reasons I thought the president was wrong,” he added, “to pardon people who assaulted police officers on January 6th.”

Rand Paul likens Trump birthday stunt to ‘Soviet parades’

0

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) slammed the military parade held on President Donald Trump’s birthday.

During a Sunday interview on NBC, Paul was asked about Saturday’s parade.

“I just never liked the idea of the parade because I grew up in the 70s and 80s and the only parades I can remember are Soviet parades for the most part or North Korean parades,” Paul replied. “You know, dipping the girl and kissing the girl in New York, and a ticker-tape parade. But we were rejoicing in the end of the war, and we were rejoicing in our soldiers coming home.”

“We never glorified weapons so much,” he continued. “And I know he means well. I don’t think he means for any of this to be depicted in another fashion, but I’m just not a big fan.”

“And then there is the cost. I mean, we’re $2 trillion in the hole. And just an additional cost like this, I just, I’m not for it.

Lindsey Graham urges ‘Trump to go all in’ on Iran

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) encouraged President Donald Trump to use “military action” to help Israel “finish the job” of destroying Iran’s nuclear facilities.

“So the worst possible outcome for the world is for the Iranian nuclear program to survive,” Graham said Sunday on Face the Nation. “How do you destroy their program? Through diplomacy, I prefer that, or through military action.”

“I would urge President Trump to go all in to make sure that when this operation is over, there’s nothing left standing in Iran regarding their nuclear program,” he continued. “If that means providing bombs, provide bombs, if that means flying. Whatever bombs, if it means flying with Israel, fly with Israel.”

“The worst possible outcome for the world is to take the Iranian nuclear program on and leave it standing.”

‘Iran tried to assassinate Trump twice’- Netanyahu

Fox News host Bret Baier challenged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after he claimed that the assassination attempts against President Trump were orchestrated by Iran.

“These people who chant death to America, try to assassinate President Trump twice, killed 241 of your Marines in Beirut, killed and injured thousands of American soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, try to bomb a restaurant in Washington, D.C., chant death to America, burn the American flag,” Netanyahu told the Fox News host on Sunday.

“Do you want these people to have nuclear weapons and the means t

o deliver them to your cities?” the Israeli leader said. “Of course not. “So we’re defending ourselves, but we’re also defending the world.”

Baier seemed surprised by the claim.

“I want to talk about President Trump,” he replied. “You just said Iran tried to assassinate President Trump twice. Do you have intel that the assassination attempts on President Trump were directly from Iran?”

“Through proxies, yes,” Netanyahu insisted. “Through their intel, yes, they want to kill him. Look, he’s enemy number one. He’s a decisive leader.”

“He’s been very forceful,” he said ot Trump. “Look, they also tried to kill me, but I’m his junior partner.”

During the 2024 campaign, two U.S. citizens allegedly attempted to assassinate Trump. Law enforcement officials have not provided evidence connecting the attempts to Iran.

Roger Stone predicts third Trump impeachment

Roger Stone, a longtime adviser to President Donald Trump, warned that “Satanic” Democrats could take control of Congress in the midterm elections.

During a Sunday interview on Real America’s Voice, host Shemane Nugent told Stone that Republicans were in “spiritual warfare” with Democrats.

“We control the House of Representatives, I think now by two seats,” Stone noted. “So the House could flip back to the Democrats in the midterm election as repugnant an idea as that is.”

The Trump adviser predicted investigations and impeachment of the president if the Democrats were successful.

“But anybody who thinks that we will hold on to power forever, I think, misunderstands the dynamics here,” he explained. “These people are demonic. They are Satanic. There are no moderates in the Democrat [sic] Party. This is a radical clique of Marxists. And they are committed.”

“Be certain that we are doing God’s will,” he added. “Pray for the safety and the wisdom of our president and those he is surrounded around him.”

Stone also accused former special counsel Robert Mueller of giving his wife cancer.

“I’ve had as many as five miracles in my life in a short period of time,” he insisted. “My wife survived aggressive stage four cancer, which I think was a gift from Robert Mueller and his thugs.”

“I mean, two and a half years under intense pressure, that kind of stress triggers cancer, in my opinion, and the opinion of many doctors.”

GOP senator accused of ‘mocking’ the murder of two Dems

U.S. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), an ally to President Donald Trump, is in hot water over a social media post.

Lee on Sunday took to X and posted a photo of a man accused of posing as a police officer and shooting two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses.

Along with the image, Lee confusingly wrote, “This is what happens When Marxists don’t get their way.”

The comment seemingly contradicts a statement by the alleged shooter’s best friend, who suggested the suspect is a strong supporter of the president.

The statement didn’t sit well with numerous notable political experts and observers.

Podcast host Brett Meiselas said, “For a U.S. senator to be posting fake information like this after Democratic lawmakers were just shot is just so beneath contempt I don’t even know where to begin.”

“In a normal world this would be grounds for expulsion or censure at minimum but we live in hell so,” he added on Sunday.

Conservative anti-Trump activist Rick Wilson said, “The surgery to remove your sense of shame was a success. Congrats, I guess.”

Democratic pollster Matt McDermott said, “Yesterday, a Trump supporter went on an assassination spree targeting Democrats. Today, a GOP Senator mocks their murder.”

“This isn’t politics — it’s depraved moral rot,” the strategist added.

Matthew Gertz, a senior fellow at Media Matters for America, chimed in:

“This is an honest to god U.S. senator who either has had his brain broken by the internet or is posturing as such to appeal to the most dishonest, deranged, and/or stupid people online.

GOP strategist flags ‘very significant problem’ for Trump’s polling

Donald Trump’s polling is historically low, and his approval ratings are at 38%, which poses a “significant problem,” according to a GOP pollster on Sunday.

Mike Madrid, who served as the Golden State’s GOP political director before co-founding the group of current and former anti-Trump Republicans known as the Lincoln Project, has previously commented on Trump’s political tactics.

This weekend, however, Madrid struck a different tone than normal, insisting that the “momentum has shifted” due to recent events.

Among the developments cited were the tackling of a US senator at an immigration press conference, as well as intense protests throughout Los Angeles.

Another point highlighted by Madrid is, “Trump’s polling numbers hit a historic low.”

“38% is lower… than Trump was polling at the height of the pandemic in 2020,” he said. “Very significant problem.”

Why this matters, according to Madrid, is that the polling gives us an indicator of whether Americans will accept dictatorship.

He added that consumer confidence in where we’re heading also remains at a “historic low.”

“He does not have the support of the American people on his big beautiful bill,” Madrid said on Sunday. “This is an unpopular president.”

Alex Jones melts down over Minnesota shooter being ‘huge Trump supporter’

0

Noted right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on Sunday called the recent shootings of multiple Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota “false flags.”

At one point claiming he’s “not the conspiracy theory guy,” Jones says, “He’s wearing a plastic mask. If you can believe it’s him. This thing smells of some type of sophisticated operation.”

He then said, “I said, let me see who these two Democrat lawmakers are that got shot… And what did they know? What were they about to release on Tim Walz? How do we know that wasn’t a CCP operative with a rubber mask on, which they did.”

Jones went on to ask, “What did I tell you in the last six months?”

“False flag shootings on lawmakers, on homes, on illegal alien demonstrations, on black churches… And then I said they find a dead body of a MAGA supporter so that they can’t defend themselves. And here we are. He’s a huge Trump supporter,” he added.

Trump drops sweeping immigration effort in big cities

Donald Trump Sunday issued a sweeping immigration enforcement directive targeting big cities including Los Angeles and New York.

Trump over the weekend took to his own social media site, Truth Social, to make the declaration.

“Our Nation’s ICE Officers have shown incredible strength, determination, and courage as they facilitate a very important mission, the largest Mass Deportation Operation of Illegal Aliens in History. Every day, the Brave Men and Women of ICE are subjected to violence, harassment, and even threats from Radical Democrat Politicians, but nothing will stop us from executing our mission, and fulfilling our Mandate to the American People. ICE Officers are herewith ordered, by notice of this TRUTH, to do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History,” Trump wrote.

“In order to achieve this, we must expand efforts to detain and deport Illegal Aliens in America’s largest Cities, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, where Millions upon Millions of Illegal Aliens reside. These, and other such Cities, are the core of the Democrat Power Center, where they use Illegal Aliens to expand their Voter Base, cheat in Elections, and grow the Welfare State, robbing good paying Jobs and Benefits from Hardworking American Citizens.”

Trump then continued:

“These Radical Left Democrats are sick of mind, hate our Country, and actually want to destroy our Inner Cities — And they are doing a good job of it! There is something wrong with them. That is why they believe in Open Borders, Transgender for Everybody, and Men playing in Women’s Sports — And that is why I want ICE, Border Patrol, and our Great and Patriotic Law Enforcement Officers, to FOCUS on our crime ridden and deadly Inner Cities, and those places where Sanctuary Cities play such a big role. You don’t hear about Sanctuary Cities in our Heartland!”

Trump added, “I want our Brave ICE Officers to know that REAL Americans are cheering you on every day. The American People want our Cities, Schools, and Communities to be SAFE and FREE from Illegal Alien Crime, Conflict, and Chaos. “Our Federal Government will continue to be focused on the REMIGRATION of Aliens to the places from where they came, and preventing the admission of ANYONE who undermines the domestic tranquility of the United States,” he concluded. “To ICE, FBI, DEA, ATF, the Patriots at Pentagon and the State Department, you have my unwavering support. HOW ISRAEL VS IRAN WAR IS FORCING TEHRAN TO HAVE FEW CARDS ON THE TABLE ALL BETTS COULD BE OFF

By CIC International Affairs.

HOW ISRAEL VS IRAN WAR IS FORCING TEHRAN TO HAVE FEW CARDS ON THE TABLE ALL BETTS COULD BE OFF.

The scale of Israel’s strikes on multiple, sensitive Iranian military and nuclear sites on Friday was unprecedented. It was the biggest attack on Iran since the Iran–Iraq War in the 1980s.

As expected, Iran responded swiftly , even as Israeli attacks on its territory continued. The unfolding conflict is reshaping regional dynamics, and Iran now finds itself with no easy path forward. The timing of the Israeli strikes was highly significant. They came at a critical point in the high-stakes negotiations between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s nuclear program that began earlier this year.

Last week, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a report accusing Tehran of stockpiling highly enriched uranium at levels dangerously close to weaponisation.

According to the report, Iran has accumulated around 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity. If this uranium is further enriched to 90% purity, it would be enough to build nine to ten bombs.

The day before Israel’s attack, the IAEA board of governors also declared Iran to be in breach of its non-proliferation obligations for the first time in two decades.

The nuclear talks recently hit a stumbling block over a major issue – the US refusal to allow Iran to enrich any uranium at all for a civilian nuclear program.

Iran has previously agreed to cap its enrichment at 3.67% under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, a nuclear deal between Iran, the US and other global powers agreed to in 2015 (and abandoned by the first Trump administration in 2018). But it has refused to relinquish its right to enrichment altogether.

US President Donald Trump reportedly urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to attack Iran last week, believing he was close to a deal.
But after the attack, Trump ramped up his threats on Iran again, urging it to agree to a deal “before there is nothing left”. He called the Israeli strikes “excellent” and suggested there was “more to come”.

Given this context, it is understandable why Iran does not view the US as an impartial mediator. In response, Iran suspended its negotiations with the US, announcing it would skip the sixth round of talks scheduled for Sunday.

Rather than compelling Iran to agree to a deal, the excessive pressure could risk pushing Iran towards a more extreme stance instead.
While Iranian officials have denied any intention to develop a military nuclear program, they have warned that continued Israeli attacks and US pressure might force Tehran to reconsider as a deterrence mechanism.

On several occasions, Trump has insisted he is not seeking “regime change” in Iran. He has repeatedly claimed he wants to see Iran be “ successful ” the only requirement is for it to accept a US deal.

However, in Iran’s view, the US proposal is not viewed as a peace offer, but as a blueprint for surrender. And the fear is this would ultimately pave the way for regime change under the guise of diplomacy.

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei responded to the latest US proposal by insisting that uranium enrichment remains a “red line” for Iran. Abandoning this right from the Iranian perspective would only embolden its adversaries to escalate their pressure on the regime and make further demands such as dismantling Iran’s missile program.

The fear in Tehran is this could push the country into a defenceless state without a way to deter future Israeli strikes.
Furthermore, capitulating to the US terms could ignite domestic backlash on two fronts: from an already growing opposition movement, and from the regime’s base of loyal supporters, who would see any retreat as a betrayal.

In this context, many in Iran’s leadership believe that giving in to Trump’s terms would not avert regime change – it would hasten it.
Caught between escalating pressure and existential threats, Iran finds itself with few viable options other than to project strength. It has already begun to pursue this strategy by launching retaliatory missile strikes at Israeli cities.

This response has been much stronger than the relatively contained tit-for-tat strikes Israel and Iran engaged in last year. Iran’s strikes have caused considerable damage to government and residential areas in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Iran sees no alternative but to push forward, having already been drawn into open confrontation. Any sign of weakness would severely undermine the regime’s legitimacy at home and embolden its adversaries abroad.

Moreover, Tehran is betting on Trump’s aversion to foreign wars. Iranian leaders believe the US is neither prepared nor willing to enter another costly conflict in the region – one that could disrupt global trade and jeopardise Trump’s recent economic partnerships with Persian Gulf states.

Therefore, Iran’s leadership likely believes that by standing firm now, the conflict will be limited, so long as the US stays on the sidelines. And then, Iran’s leaders would try to return to the negotiating table, in their view, from a position of strength.

UK and Zimbabwe signal new chapter in relations after decades of tension

UK and Zimbabwe signal new chapter in relations after decades of tension

The United Kingdom and Zimbabwe are taking cautious steps toward renewing ties after years of strained relations, marked by a historic visit from UK Minister for Africa, Lord Collins of Highbury, to Harare on June 11.

The first such visit by a UK cabinet minister in seven years, it signals a potential thaw in a relationship long marred by colonial legacies and political disputes.

Lord Collins met with President Emmerson Mnangagwa to discuss cooperation in key areas like mineral value addition, clean energy, and agricultural SMEs, aligning with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 development goals.

The talks reflect Mnangagwa’s ongoing push for international re-engagement since taking office in 2017, following decades of isolation under Robert Mugabe’s rule.

The UK, a former colonial power, has responded positively, recently lifting sanctions on several Zimbabwean individuals and entities and supporting Zimbabwe’s bid to rejoin the Commonwealth, contingent on democratic reforms.

Tensions between the two nations peaked in the early 2000s over Zimbabwe’s controversial land reforms, which saw white-owned farms seized, leading to economic collapse and UK sanctions.

National mourning period has been extended for nine days

SECRETARY to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa says President Hakainde Hichilema will president over the funeral of his predecessor, Edgar Lungu, whose national mourning period has been extended for nine days.

But during the same briefing, family representative lawyer Makebi Zulu said it was the late Mr Lungu’s wish that his predecessor, Mr Hichilema should not be allowed to attend his funeral.

After protracted negotiations regards the repatriation of Mr Lungu’s remains from South Africa, Mr Kangwa said Government and the Lungu family reached an agreement.

“In accordance with the family’s wishes and the dignity benefiting the service of the sixth President our nation, a state funeral shall be held and shall be presided over by the President of the Republic of Zambia,” Mr Kangwa said at a joint pressing briefing in South Africa.

He added that Mr Hichilema has also officially extended the mourning period for Mr Lungu by nine days from today until June 23, 2025.

Mr Kangwa also clarified that the Zambia Government granted passage of Mr Lungu, who died on June 5, to attend medical attention in South Africa.

“The Government of the republic of Zambia officially granted passage for the sixth President to come to South Africa for treatment,” he said adding that efforts were also made to support the deceased while he sort medical attention abroad.

“Efforts were made to support the President while he was in South Africa, however with the history and relationships, this did not come to pass,” Mr Kangwa said.

He thanked the South African Government for facilitating medical care and all those who supported the negotiation process, which included traditional leadership and the clergy.

Mr Kangwa also thanked Zambians for their unity, compassion and patience during this mourning process, adding “let us come together as One Zambia, One Nation”.

Earlier, Mr Zulu said it was Mr Lungu’s settled wishes that in the event of his death, those who never showed any interest of his welfare while he was alive should not be allowed to pretend to be interested in his welfare in death.

He said the deceased’s specific wishes and those of the family included that he should be repatriated back home in the same manner he had travelled to South Africa, namely privately.

“Secondly, his body should lie in state at his personal residence in Chifwema prior to burial. Thirdly, in the event that he is accorded State funeral, his successor should not be allowed to attend it,” the lawyer said.

The other wish is that Archbishop Alick Banda be requested to preside over the church service that maybe held in Mr Lungu’s honour.

“Following his death, the family has been engaging in protracted negotiations with the Hichilema administration which it requested to guarantee that the wishes of the former President will be honoured”.

Mr Zulu stressed that the negotiations were never about pending matters in court relating to any of the members of the family or associates of Mr Lungu.

He said the two parties agreed to honour some undertakings, including private repatriation of the body.

“That the body of the late Mr Lungu shall be transported together with the family from South African to Zambia on Wednesday using a private charter”.

On arrival, it will be received by family members in Lusaka and given full military honours, to be conducted at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport.

It was agreed that the body shall be taken to the funeral house in Chifwema, and will later be moved to Mulungushi International Conference Centre, Thursday, June 19.

From Thursday to Saturday, members of the public will be paying their last respects from the conference centre from 09:00 to 16:00, after which the body be returned to Chifwema, every day.

“The State funeral to host foreign signatories to be held at Mulunshushi International Conference Centre on Sunday, June 22,” Mr Zulu said.

On Monday, there will be a valedictory session to be held at Supreme Court for the late lawyer, to be followed by a church service in the Lusaka show grounds to be graced by Archbishop Banda.

“The body shall always be accompanied by a relative, the aide de camp, and the former president’s personal physician”.

He added that acting Patriotic Front (PF) president Given Lubinda will representing the PF during the period.

“The family is proceeding based on the guarantees given by the Government that they will not deviate from the agreement,” Mr Zulu said.

He also apologise for the inconvenience and pain caused by the protracted negotiations.

Lungu Family Refutes Allegations of Demanding Court Case Withdrawals Before Releasing Body

Lungu Family Refutes Allegations of Demanding Court Case Withdrawals Before Releasing Body

The family of the late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has strongly denied widespread claims suggesting they demanded the withdrawal of all court cases involving family members or associates as a precondition for releasing his body for burial.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Makebi Zulu dismissed the allegations as false and misleading.

“Let me make this clear: at no point were negotiations about any court cases concerning members of the Lungu family or the former president’s associates,” Zulu stated emphatically. “I’m certain the Secretary to the Cabinet can also confirm that such matters were never discussed. They never even came up.”

The denial comes in response to a wave of social media posts and commentary from pages aligned with the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), which alleged that the Lungu family had placed legal demands before agreeing to the release of the body for state funeral proceedings.

Mr. Zulu clarified that the family’s sole concern was to honor President Lungu’s legacy and ensure the nation had the opportunity to mourn its former leader with dignity.

“The entire process was driven by one thing: to uphold the wishes of the late President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, to honor his memory and family, and to allow the people of Zambia to grieve respectfully.”

The Office of the Secretary to the Cabinet has since affirmed the family’s position, stating unequivocally that discussions never touched on legal matters.

President Lungu, who passed away earlier this month, is set to be accorded a state funeral. Preparations are underway, with leaders across the political spectrum calling for national unity and decorum during this solemn period of mourning.

Between Duty and Dilemma, Why Makebi Zulu’s Role as Lungu’s Family

Between Duty and Dilemma, Why Makebi Zulu’s Role as Lungu’s Family Spokesperson Demands Reconsideration

By : Tobbius Hamunkoyo – LLB, Author , Scientist, political Analyst & Governance Advocate  ,15/06/25

In times of national mourning, words carry weight, and those who speak on behalf of the deceased must exercise utmost care, integrity, and respect, especially when the departed is a former Head of State.

The recent passing of former Republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has ignited scrutiny surrounding Snr Counsel Makebi Zulu’s role as the family’s official spokesperson, raising critical concerns about conflict of interest and ethical responsibility.

A Delicate Crossroad, Public Trust vs. Personal Ties

Since the announcement of President Lungu’s passing, public statements and accusations have flooded the airwaves, with Mr Makebi Zulu esq taking center stage as the family’s voice.

While his proximity to the Lungu family may lend him credibility in their eyes, it is precisely this closeness that raises ethical questions in the broader national discourse.

At the heart of this dilemma is the intersection between his legal profession, family ties, and public representation.

More critically, the fact that Mr Makebi Zulu’s younger brother, Caleb Zulu, a police officer, is among the accused in the unresolved murder case of the late Director General of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Guntila Muleya places him in a precarious position, the fact that he has not distanced himself from Caleb Zulu.

The case remains before the courts, and while the law presumes innocence until proven guilty, the optics of this situation are undeniably problematic.

Ethical Quandaries and Perception of Bias

It is a notorious fact that Lawyers, by virtue of their profession, understand that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.

Whether or not Mr. Zulu’s statements are intended to serve the best interests of the Lungu family, the question remains, can he truly speak objectively given his entanglement in another high-profile legal matter? can he?.

Beyond legal technicalities, perception is paramount. Public trust erodes when individuals positioned to serve justice appear to hold conflicting interests. While no one disputes Makebi Zulu’s competence as a good lawyer, his dual role as a political figure and family spokesperson risks distorting the delicate narrative unfolding around President Lungu’s legacy.

Unverified Claims and the Burden of Proof

The posthumous claims regarding President Lungu’s final wishes, particularly those allegedly directed at President Hakainde Hichilema and the current government, introduce another layer of contention.

Were these statements documented ?, were they witnessed by neutral parties? , or merely verbal accounts? Without clear verification, their credibility remains uncertain to many Zambians.

President Edgar Lungu spent his last days receiving medical care abroad in South Africa, making it crucial for any assertions regarding his final sentiments to be backed by tangible evidence rather than partisan interpretations as many may view them this way.

If these narratives are not substantiated, they risk deepening political divisions at a time when unity should be the prevailing theme.

Makebi Zulu’s Political Background and Influence

Makebi Zulu esq is not just a lawyer, he is a seasoned political figure who has held key government positions before.

He served as Member of Parliament for Malambo Constituency under the Patriotic Front (PF) government from 2016 to 2021 .

During his tenure, he was also appointed Provincial Minister for Eastern Province, a role that placed him at the forefront of governance and development initiatives.

His political career has been marked by strong advocacy on legal and governance matters. Even after leaving office, he has remained vocal in opposition and commenting on constitutional issues, recently warning against government attempts to expand presidential powers over parliamentary appointments.

His continued engagement in national discourse underscores his influence in Zambia’s political landscape.

Leadership Calls for Discernment, Not Dramatization

A moment of mourning should not be reduced to political chess. National healing requires figures in the legal, political, and social spheres to exercise discretion rather than sow discord.

Makebi Zulu esq, given his experience, should recognize the weight of his words and the potential consequences they carry, very important.

Grief should be solemn, not strategic. While the Lungu family has every right to determine who represents them, Zambia as a whole deserves space to honor the late President without being pulled into political entanglements or speculative statements.

A Time for Reflection, Not Rhetoric

If Makebi Zulu esq truly seeks to uphold integrity, both professionally and personally, stepping away from the spokesperson role would be ua wise and principled decision.

Leadership is not just about visibility, but about knowing when silence is the stronger stance.

As Zambia mourns its former President, let the moment be defined by dignity and facts, not factionalism.

Zambia Shakes as ECL’s Final Wish Gets Buried Alongside His Dignity- Linda Banks

WHAT IS GOVERNMENT AFRAID OF ?

Zambia Shakes as ECL’s Final Wish Gets Buried Alongside His Dignity

By Linda Banks

In a twist so petty it could make Shakespeare roll in his grave and Mugabe raise an eyebrow, the Zambian government is reportedly sweating bullets over the idea of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s remains taking a patriotic tour to his beloved Copperbelt and Eastern Province.

Yes, you read that right. Apparently, even in death, ECL is considered too politically dangerous to be seen in Petauke. The man’s corpse has more clout than half the Cabinet combined, it seems.

Instead of seizing the moment to show maturity, statesmanship, and perhaps just a dash of basic human decency, the current regime appears to have opted for a different path: paranoia, pettiness, and the PR disaster of the decade.

Observers from around the region and the globe were on standby to witness a magnanimous moment, President Hakainde Hichilema rising above past tensions, extending a hand of national unity in death, and proving once and for all that Zambia’s democracy was bigger than its grudges.

But alas, what did we get instead? A move so tone deaf, so insecure, so politically twitchy it might as well have been crafted by a frightened intern with a vendetta. One can only wonder: What are they so afraid of? That even a casket bearing ECL’s name might spark a revolution?

To deny a man his final wish, especially one rooted in the soil of his origins, is not just cold but it’s suspicious. It raises questions, not only of respect and decency but of fear. If HH wanted to look generous, composed, and ready to lead a nation beyond ghosts of political rivalries, he’s missed a golden opportunity.

Instead, the optics are clear: the ghost of ECL still haunts State House and it’s apparently not welcome in Eastern Province either. A dead ECL is more dangerous to HH than a breathing one, his supporters will protest but time will vindicate this article. It’s not too late for the government to grant a man he’s dying wish!

The statement followed a phone call between the two leaders, though official details of their discussion remain undisclosed.

Trump emphasized the need for peace, writing, “Just spoke with President Putin. We both agree the war between Israel and Iran has to stop. Time for diplomacy!”

The call comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with Israel and Iran engaged in escalating military exchanges. South Africa reaffirms commitment to African peacekeeping as SANDF troops return from DRC

South Africa reaffirms commitment to African peacekeeping as SANDF troops return from DRC

Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga welcomed the first cohort of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members returning from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday.

The homecoming ceremony underscored South Africa’s steadfast commitment to fostering peace and stability across the continent.
Speaking at the event, Minister Motshekga emphasized the nation’s dedication to “silencing the guns” in Africa, a key pillar of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

“South Africa remains resolute in playing its role to ensure peace and security in conflict-affected regions,” she said. “Our troops’ efforts in the DRC reflect our unwavering support for regional stability.”

The SANDF contingent, deployed as part of the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC), has been instrumental in supporting efforts to curb violence in the volatile eastern region, where armed groups have long destabilized communities.

The returning soldiers were praised for their professionalism and sacrifice in challenging conditions.

Motshekga lauded the troops’ contribution to peacekeeping, noting that their work aligns with South Africa’s broader foreign policy of promoting African unity and conflict resolution. “We are proud of our men and women in uniform who serve with courage to bring hope to those affected by conflict,” she added.

The minister also reaffirmed South Africa’s ongoing collaboration with SADC and the African Union to address security challenges, signaling continued involvement in peacekeeping missions across the continent.

South Africa celebrates one year of GNU amid hope and hurdles

South Africa celebrates one year of GNU amid hope and hurdles

South Africa marks the first anniversary of its Government of National Unity (GNU), a coalition formed on June 14, 2024, after the African National Congress (ANC) lost its parliamentary majority in the historic May 2024 elections.

The GNU, comprising ten parties including the ANC, Democratic Alliance (DA), and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), was hailed as a bold step toward stability, but one year on, the nation reflects on a journey of cautious optimism tempered by challenges.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, re-elected under the GNU, has championed the coalition as a model of cooperation, emphasizing its commitment to economic growth, anti-corruption measures, and improved service delivery. “The GNU reflects the will of South Africans for parties to work together,” Ramaphosa said in a recent address.

Supporters, including ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, credit the coalition with averting economic collapse, while DA leader John Steenhuisen points to early gains in fostering investor confidence.

Yet, the GNU’s first year has not been without friction. Ideological differences, particularly between the ANC’s center-left policies and the DA’s pro-business stance, have sparked tensions, most notably over the 2025 budget and the National Health Insurance Bill.

With unemployment exceeding 33% and youth joblessness at 45%, critics argue the GNU lacks a cohesive plan to address South Africa’s socioeconomic woes.

As the nation commemorates this milestone, opinions remain divided. Some see the GNU as a pioneering experiment in inclusive democracy, while others, like EFF leader Julius Malema, warn of its fragility.

With a National Dialogue and institutional reforms on the horizon, the GNU’s ability to deliver tangible results will determine whether this coalition can endure and transform South Africa’s future.

Germany, France, and Britain Offer Immediate Nuclear Talks with Iran Amid Escalating Tensions

Germany, France, and Britain Offer Immediate Nuclear Talks with Iran Amid Escalating Tensions

In a bid to ease soaring tensions in the Middle East, Germany, France, and Britain have jointly offered to begin immediate negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, currently touring the region, made the announcement during an interview with German broadcaster ARD.

“We’re offering Iran immediate negotiations about the nuclear program,” Wadephul said. “I hope the offer is accepted.”

The outreach comes amid rising hostilities between Israel and Iran, following recent military escalations and fears of broader regional conflict. Wadephul emphasized that diplomacy remains the best path forward and warned that Iran must not pose a threat to regional stability, particularly to Israel or Europe.

He criticized Tehran for previously missing opportunities to engage constructively, but held out hope for renewed dialogue. “This is also a key prerequisite for reaching a pacification of this conflict that Iran presents no danger to the region, for the State of Israel or to Europe,” he stated.

The offer signals a renewed European effort to revive diplomatic channels as the international community watches the crisis with growing concern.
