HH commissions Phase 1 of the Kazungula Water Supply Project

By Angela Limwanya

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has commissioned phase one of the Kazungula Water Supply and Basic Sanitation Project in the Southern province.

The project is valued at about 12-million Euros, with financing from the governments of German and Zambia, through the SADC Water Fund.

President HICHILEMA says the project will improve access to water for residents, who previously had supply for only four hours a day.

He said the New Dawn administration has placed water, sanitation and hygiene services at the heart of its development agenda.

President HICHILEMA says these services are essential not only for public health and dignity, but also for economic transformation and poverty reduction.

The President said this in Kazungula, during the commissioning of the project, in a speech read on his behalf by Water Development Minister, COLLINS NZOVU.

And SADC Executive Secretary, ELIAS MAGOSI said the project brings dignity to the people of Kazungula.

Meanwhile, KFW Development Bank Office Director, CONNY TITTMANN said the project responds to climate change and can run completely off grid using solar energy.

Speaking at the same event, Chief SEKUTE, of Kazungula district, said the project is a clear and tangible reflection of government’s commitment to inclusive development.

Last month President Hichilema was in Masaiti District where he commissioned the $490m Kafulafuta dam which aims at improving access to clean water for Ndola, Luanshya, Masaiti, and Mpongwe. districts.

Ukrainian president, Zelensky has expressed deep concerns about the current state of his country amidst tensions with Russia.

Zelensky continued his commentary on Social media platforms, updating the world about the ongoing battles in his country.

This time, the Ukrainian president claim Russia has launched a new attack on his country which has so far left many in critical condition.

According to him, the Russia military has launched over 400 drones and 40 missiles to distract Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president revealed the aftermath have left Ukraine in rescue missions and emergency operation to attend to victims.

“Today, rescue and emergency operations continued all day across various regions and cities of our country.

Over 400 drones, more than 40 missiles were launched by the Russians. 80 people were injured, and some may still be under the debris. And unfortunately, not everyone in the world condemns such attacks. This is exactly what Putin exploits. He is buying himself time to keep waging war.”

President Zelensky went on to accuse Russia of disturbing the world’s Unity with continues unprovoked attack on his country.

He called for pressure to be mounted on Russia to put a stop to the ongoing war by taking steps to accept the ceasefire terms in the ongoing negotiation.

“The Russians constantly try to drive wedges into the unity of the world in order to prevent stronger pressure for their war. We must clearly see the task at hand. Diplomacy must work, security guarantees must be ensured, and peace must be established. For that, initial steps are needed, particularly a ceasefire. Pressure must be applied on Russia to make that happen and to stop the attacks.”

According to the report, Nigeria and Chad topped the list at an average of 55 years. South Sudan follows with an average life expectancy of 58 years, alongside the Central African Republic and Lesotho, both also recording 58 years.

Australian TV reporter shot by LA Police with rubber bullets while covering the protests in L.A.

Australian TV reporter Lauren Tomasi who happens to be a U.S. correspondent for Nine News suffered rubber bullet shots in the recent LA riots.

The reporter was struck in the leg by a rubber bullet fired by a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer while covering protests against immigration raids in downtown Los Angeles.

The incident, captured live on camera, occurred near the Metropolitan Detention Centre during clashes between protesters and authorities.

Agencies included in the riot are the LAPD and National Guard troops deployed by President Donald Trump.

Tomasi was reporting on the escalating situation, noting the LAPD’s use of rubber bullets and horseback patrols, when an officer appeared to aim and fire at her, leaving her with a bruise but no serious injuries.

She continued reporting, stating, “I’m good,” despite the pain. Nine News condemned the incident.

The new agency emphasized the dangers journalists face, while Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade called for journalist safety.

Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to seek an explanation from U.S. authorities.

California files lawsuit against Trump for deploying 2,000 National Guard troops to protect ICE agents in LA riots

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has announced that the state will file a lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging President Donald Trump’s deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles amid protests over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

According to Bonta, the administration trampled California’s sovereignty by federalizing the state’s National Guard without Governor Gavin Newsom’s consent. He also called the action “unlawful” and “unprecedented.”

The lawsuit is set to be filed in federal court and will seek to nullify Trump’s order which mobilized the troops to protect ICE agents and federal property during demonstrations that erupted Friday in response to immigration sweeps across Los Angeles County.

Bonta also argued that local law enforcement had the situation under control, stating, “I spoke with local authorities yesterday, and they confirmed they had what they needed.”

He described the federal intervention as an escalation of initially scattered protests into broader unrest, asserting, “This was not inevitable.”

Drake owns enough clothing to fill an entire basketball court

After recently opening up his Instagram comments to the public again, Drake wants to show all his followers the extent of his flexes.

Drake may be one of the most successful artists of the modern era, but he can still relate to plenty of quotidian moments. Have you ever been looking for one specific shirt, but can’t find it amid your closet, drawers… Or massive basketball court?

Well, if not, you’re not alone. The 6ix God recently took to Instagram to show off his massive T-shirt collection. With all the racks and tables in mind, it’s enough to fill a whole basketball court. There are also plenty of other items in view, such as many pairs of shoes, jackets, sweatshirts, and more.

Since Drake recently made his Instagram comments public again, there were more fans than usual reacting to this under the post. It’s an odd post to make as one of your first since the change, but it makes sense as a massive flex.

Of course, this shouldn’t come as much surprise to anyone who keeps up with the Toronto superstar’s many fit pics, looks, and style choices. He’s always doing something notable with his clothing, so he’s got to have a sprawling selection to work with on any given day.

Elsewhere, we’re sure that some of these pieces will make an appearance during Drake’s upcoming U.K. and Europe tour, which he will embark on alongside PARTYNEXTDOOR. The $ome $exy $ongs 4 U duo has been dominating 2025 so far, and we’re sure this will extend that success.

This also joins Drizzy’s three-night headlining slots at London’s Wireless Festival, a historic occasion for the shindig’s 20th anniversary. Those distinct sets will feature PND and Summer Walker, “the Mandem” (possibly many U.K. collaborators), and Burna Boy and Vybz Kartel. For those curious, that will go down from July 11 to July 13.

However, other fans are more concerned with Drake’s disappointing absence from one of 2025’s most anticipated hip-hop projects. Many fans wanted him to connect with Lil Wayne again on his comeback album Tha Carter VI, but that didn’t pan out. It turns out that earlier reports of a possible collaboration didn’t manifest. Hopefully they have another collab in the near future.

Drake’s dad, 70, is facing criticism after being spotted with his 19-year-old partner

Memphis, TN – Dennis Graham, the 70-year-old father of global rap superstar Drake, is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. The former musician was recently spotted in public with his 19-year-old partner, whose identity has not been fully disclosed, igniting a firestorm of criticism across social media and entertainment circles.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing Graham and the young woman at a high-end restaurant in Memphis last weekend, appearing affectionate and unbothered by the attention. Photos circulating on platforms like X show the couple holding hands, with Graham sporting his signature flashy style and the teenager dressed in a trendy, form-fitting outfit. The stark age gap—over five decades—has fueled heated debates online, with many labeling the relationship “inappropriate” and “predatory.”

“Drake’s dad is 70 dating a 19-year-old? That’s just wild,” one X user posted, echoing a sentiment shared by thousands. Others defended Graham, arguing that consenting adults should be free to date without judgment. “Age is just a number. Let them live,” another user countered.

This isn’t the first time Graham, a Memphis native known for his vibrant personality and occasional music collaborations with his son, has courted controversy. However, the significant age difference has drawn comparisons to other high-profile figures whose relationships have sparked similar debates. Critics point to the power dynamics at play, given Graham’s wealth, status, and industry connections as Drake’s father.

Neither Graham nor Drake has publicly addressed the backlash. Sources close to the family claim Graham is “living his life” and dismisses the criticism as “noise.” Meanwhile, fans of Drake are speculating whether the rapper will reference the drama in his upcoming music, as he’s known for weaving personal and family matters into his lyrics.

Kendrick Lamar’s “GNX” wins Album of the Year at the 2025 BET Awards

Kendrick Lamar remains one of the best artists in the world, so it should come as no surprise that he would win big at the BET Awards.
Kendrick Lamar and Drake were both nominated for Album of the Year at the BET Awards. Of course, Drake was nominated for $OME $EXY $ONGS 4 U, his collaborative album with none other than PartyNextDoor. Meanwhile Kendrick was nominated for GNX.

Overall, it was clear that GNX was going to come out victorious. At the end of the day, it was one of the best albums of 2024. Furthermore, the album has had huge staying power. So much so that it is the frontrunner to win a Grammy in 2026.

Perhaps the coolest part of Kendrick winning this award is the fact that he showed up for it. The artist hasn’t been to the BET Awards in some time, but he showed out for the occasion. Below, you can watch his speech, in which he thanked BET for always doing right by the culture.

Furthermore, Kendrick’s speech consisted of a not-so-shameless plug about his Grand National Tour with SZA. Of course, this is one of the biggest tours in the history of hip-hop. During the speech, the artist asked fans to come and support himself and SZA.

SZA was also in attendance at the awards show, which was beautiful to see. Numerous artists showed up for the event this year, and that is really amazing to see. It puts a great spotlight on the event, and with this being the show’s 25th anniversary, it’s clear that this was particularly special.

We are about three hours into the event, and only a few awards have been given out. It remains to be seen how this will be figured out as the night goes on. Regardless, we will continue to watch along with the event and bring you the biggest updates.

TikToker goes viral for claiming Harriet Tubman did not exist

Some Black TikTokers have claimed that Harriet Tubman wasn’t a real person. As reported by The Root, a content creator named Ce Chronicles alleged in a since-deleted video that famed abolitionist Tubman was actually a U.S. government spy called Araminta Ross.

The TikToker also claimed that abolitionist Sojourner Truth was also a spy and that her name was also fake.

“They want us to look up and idolize these people, oh well, they look like just like me so I must look up to them.’ Stop that sh*t immediately,” she said.

Interestingly, other Black social media users threw their weight behind her, with some even questioning the truth about the Underground Railroad.

“Hear me out, that shit does not make sense. Why would you be taking slaves underground in tunnel,” one user questioned in a video.

“Harriet Tubman wasn’t even her name. I keep telling y’all America is a stage. These people are playing characters. Everybody for some odd reason has to change their name,” another added.

But here are the facts, per historians. Even though it is true that Tubman’s birth name wasn’t “Harriet Tubman”, she was indeed a real person. Born Minty (Araminta) Ross in 1822 to a family of slaves, Tubman was a key figure of the Underground Railroad, a large movement in North America consisting of several individuals who worked together to aid slaves in their escape from their captors.

Tubman and her two brothers escaped from slavery after the death of their owner in 1849. After one of her brothers had second thoughts about their escape and returned, Tubman joined them. She, however, escaped again, this time using the secret network of the Underground Railroad. Tubman traveled by the light of the North Star, using night-time cover to avoid those who hunted her.

A large portion of Tubman’s family was enslaved in Maryland. She worked to free them with the help of some abolitionists in the region in 1850. She then went on several other journeys to help free slaves escape north and onward to Canada, which had also abolished slavery. Word of Tubman’s daring exploits began to spread, gaining her the nickname “Moses” from abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison who compared her to the Hebrew prophet of the Bible.

Genealogist and historian Walt Way shared historical records and newspaper clippings to prove to Ce Chronicles and others that Tubman existed.

Eminem Wanted Mariah Carey To Play His Mom In ‘8 Mile’

Eminem reportedly wanted Mariah Carey to play the role of his mom in 8 Mile.

According to Damizza, who produced records for Carey and became head of various Hip Hop focused radio stations, Em courted the legendary pop singer for the role.

Damizza detailed to the TFU Podcast how Eminem wanted to meet Carey for the film.

He said his initial reaction was: “I’m not getting in the middle of that. I know how this ends.”

He also revealed that Carey initially turned down the offer of a meeting before finding out about the movie.

Damizza then detailed the meeting: “The first thing out of [Eminem’s] mouth is, ‘I want you to play my mother.’”

The producer revealed Carey’s reaction: “Her insecurities kicked in big time.”

He then claimed that the professional meeting led to a brief romantic relationship between the two music icons: “It was her chasing him, not him chasing her. Next thing I know, we are at Eminem’s house… and they disappear. The second they went into his room, literally, I was like, I’m going back to LA. There is no point of me being here. It went from business to fucking”.

It has long been speculated that Eminem and Carey dated briefly in 2001, something she has long denied.

Eminem made his most public claims about their relationship on 2009 diss track “The Warning” which was a response to Carey’s single “Obsessed” which most people believe is about the rapper.

On the track, he rapped: “Wow Mariah, didn’t expect you to go balls out / Bitch shut the fuck up ‘fore I put all them phone calls out / You made to my house when you was Wild’n Out before Nick / When you was on my dick and give you something to smile about.”

Em also claimed: “Listen, girly, surely you don’t want me to talk about how I nutted early / ‘Cause I ejaculated prematurely / And bust all over your belly and you almost started hurling / And said I was gross, go get a towel, your stomach’s curling.”

Carey of course did not appear in 8 Mile and the role of Eminem’s mother in the film was played by Oscar winner Kim Basinger who won wide acclaim for her performance.

Nigeria’s public debt projected to exceed $100 billion as Tinubu requests for new loans

As President Bola Tinubu sets out for another loan to improve Noheria, experts have projected that Nigeria’s public debt will exceed $100 billion

This comes as Tinubu seeks legislative approval for new external and domestic loans totaling approximately $24 billion.

The administration justifies the borrowing as essential to address Nigeria’s infrastructure deficit, stimulate economic growth, and fund critical sectors such as agriculture, health, education, and security.

In a letter to the National Assembly, Tinubu stated, “In light of the significant infrastructure deficit and the paucity of financial resources amid declining domestic demand, prudent economic borrowing is essential to close the financial shortfall.”

The loans are also intended to stabilize the naira and enhance job creation, according to the presidency.

The IMF has also raised alarms, projecting that Nigeria’s debt service-to-revenue ratio could approach 100% by 2026 if current trends persist, leaving little room for social spending.

President Tinubu’s administration inherited a debt of ₦87.38 trillion in June 2023. The debt has overseen a rapid increase of ₦56.6 trillion in borrowing.

The new loan request, comprising $21.5 billion, €2.2 billion, 15 billion Japanese yen, and a €65 million grant, is expected to push the debt to ₦162.03 trillion (approximately $100 billion at current exchange rates) if approved.

Additionally, Tinubu has requested ₦757.98 billion in domestic bonds to address pension liabilities and $2 billion in foreign currency-denominated instruments to diversify funding sources.

Nigeria threatens to close 34 foreign embassies in Abuja for failing to pay ground rent for over a decade; Zambia and Russia included in list

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has threatened to shut down 34 foreign embassies and diplomatic missions in Abuja due to unpaid ground rents.

According to the FCTA, some of these rents dates back to 2014, totaling ₦3,662,196 ($2.3 million at current exchange rates).

On May 26, FCTA ordered the revocation of 4,794 property titles, including those of diplomatic missions, for non-payment of ground rent for a period of 10 to 43 years.

President Bola Tinubu granted defaulters a 14-day grace period, which expired on June 9, 2025, to settle their dues or face closure.

The FCTA’s Director of Land, Chijioke Nwankwoeze, stated that embassies could also face penalties of ₦2 million to ₦3 million, depending on the property location.

The defaulting embassies include those of Ghana, Thailand, Côte d’Ivoire, Russia, the Philippines, Netherlands, Turkey, Guinea, Ireland, Uganda, Iraq, Zambia, Tanzania, Germany, DR Congo, Venezuela, South Korea, Trinidad and Tobago, Egypt, Chad, Sierra Leone, India, Sudan, Niger, and Kenya, with debts ranging from ₦150 (India) to ₦1,189,990 (Zambia).

Some embassies have disputed the claims. The German Embassy stated that all financial obligations for its premises were settled as of December 2024 and no formal demand was received from the FCTA.

Ghana’s High Commission noted it had not been officially notified but would liaise with Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to resolve the issue. Sierra Leone’s embassy said it was unaware of the debt and would verify the claim.

YOU CAN’T RESPECT PRESIDENT HH AS A PERSON, RESPECT HIS PRESIDENCY – NKANDU TELLS OPPOSITION

YOU CAN’T RESPECT PRESIDENT HH AS A PERSON, RESPECT HIS PRESIDENCY – NKANDU TELLS OPPOSITION

Lusaka/ Monday, 9 June

United Party for National Development (UPND) Deputy Spokesperson Elvis Nkandu has issued a stern warning to the opposition regarding their continuous abuse of President Hakainde Hichilema.

Mr. Nkandu emphasized that the presidency is an institution deserving of respect, irrespective of personal opinions about the individual in office.

He pointed out that while in the opposition, President Hichilema faced significant scrutiny and harsh criticism. Many chose to mock and belittle him, neglecting the fact that such behavior undermines both the individual and the dignity of our political system.

“It is essential to recognize that while we may have differences in perspective, we must not allow personal grievances to cloud our respect for the presidency itself,” Mr. Nkandu stated.

He highlighted the importance of establishing a standard for political discourse that refrains from personal attacks or disrespect.

“We urge those who continue to express disdain towards President Hakainde Hichilema to reconsider their approach immediately,” he charged.

Furthermore, the UPND Deputy Spokesperson cautioned those attempting to advance their agendas through disrespectful rhetoric during this period, especially as the nation mourns its sixth Republican President, Mr. Edgar Lungu.

“We strongly caution you: do not mistake our current silence for weakness. We choose to withhold our responses not out of an inability to defend our stance and President Hakainde Hichilema but as a measure of respect for the late President, Dr. Edgar C. Lungu. His contributions to our nation should be honored with dignity and grace as we transition into this new era,” he affirmed.

Mr. Nkandu concluded by stating that it is the responsibility of all citizens to engage constructively, fostering an environment where leadership can thrive. “Respect for the presidency is not merely about the individual; it is about the integrity of our democratic systems and the future of our beloved country.”

UPND WARNS PF LEADERS AGAINST HIJACKING STATE FUNERAL FOR POLITICAL GAIN

UPND WARNS PF LEADERS AGAINST HIJACKING STATE FUNERAL FOR POLITICAL GAIN

Lusaka, 09, June 2025 — The United Party for National Development (UPND) Lusaka Province has cautioned against attempts by internal Patriotic Front (PF) factions to hijack the funeral of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu for political maneuvering, warning that the solemn occasion must not be turned into a battleground for PF succession politics.

Speaking after signing the book of condolences at Belvedere Lodge, the official government-designated funeral venue, UPND Lusaka Province Chairperson Obvious Mwaliteta expressed concern that some PF leaders were exploiting national grief to assert dominance within the opposition party.

“This moment is about mourning the loss of a former Head of State, not jostling for political positions or misleading the public for factional advantage,” said Mr. Mwaliteta. “What we are witnessing from some PF leaders is an attempt to reposition themselves for power under the guise of paying tribute to President Lungu.”

Mr. Mwaliteta condemned what he called a growing trend of PF internal leaders using the funeral to stage public appearances, issue conflicting statements, and stoke confusion warning that such actions disrespect both the late president’s legacy and the dignity of the state funeral process.

He also called on President Lungu’s family to take the lead in guiding funeral arrangements, urging them not to allow political opportunists to speak on behalf of the bereaved household or the former president’s legacy.

“This is a time for unity and reflection, not a platform for PF factions to campaign. The family should lead and not let politics override tradition and dignity,” he said.

The UPND Provincial Chairperson also dismissed recent claims that government had sidelined the PF or failed to comply with constitutional provisions in organizing the state funeral.

He noted that President Hakainde Hichilema and his administration responded with honor and respect immediately upon learning of Lungu’s passing, and all necessary state protocols have been upheld.

“The funeral has been accorded with full honors as befits a former president. Any claims to the contrary are false, politically motivated, and meant to provoke national discontent,” he said.

Mr. Mwaliteta accused some PF leaders of attempting to use his death to regain visibility and influence.

He urged all political players to avoid inflammatory statements and divisive conduct during the mourning period, calling for restraint, dignity, and respect for the bereaved family and the nation.

Enough Is Enough: We Will No Longer Tolerate the Abuse of President Hichilema- Matambo

Enough Is Enough: We Will No Longer Tolerate the Abuse of President Hichilema- Matambo

He writes…….
Beloved Citizens,

We can no longer stand idly when our Republican President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema is subjected to relentless abuse.

Despite being abused and arrested over 17 times on flimsy charges during his time in opposition, he chose the path of peace, unity, and love, even extending kindness to those who wronged him.

It is appalling that some individuals who abused him while he was in opposition continue to insult him even after he assumed the presidency. They blame him for everything, including natural disasters like the drought that hit our country last farming season, which is beyond his control.

https://www.youtube.com/live/HQL0P708cHI?si=IOYGaiVGX2d6_rOX

Despite the daily barrage of insults and abuse, President Hichilema has guided us to refrain from retaliating. However, this restraint should not be misconstrued as weakness.

After the 7-day National Mourning for our 6th Republican President, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, we will no longer tolerate this nonsense. The abuse of President Hichilema must end.

We will continue to stand in solidarity with our president, and we know that God will continue to guide and protect him, just as He has done so  through previous numerous assassination attempts.

We would like to encourage our Republican President Mr Hakainde in Philippians 4:13  “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Hon. Elisha Matambo

MOURN ECL WITH DIGNITY -KAVINDELE

MOURN ECL WITH DIGNITY -KAVINDELE

Former Vice President Enoch Kavindele has urged Zambians to mourn the late former President Edgar Lungu in a dignified manner.

Mr Kavindele says that the late President Lungu served his time as a leader and peacefully handed over the instruments of power to President Hakainde  Hichilema, a sign that another elected leader had to govern the country.

The former Vice President condemned those politicising former President Lungu’s funeral, stating that it was wrong to claim that President Lungu was only a leader of a particular political party.

ZANIS reports that speaking after signing in the book of condolence at Belvedere Lodge in Lusaka, Mr Kavindele stated that the whole nation has lost a man who served in the office of president, hence needs to be mourned by all Zambians.

“For only a section of political parties to claim that only they should be in-charge of the funeral is very wrong, we are being denied an opportunity to mourn a former President,” Mr Kavindele said.

He noted that President Lungu’s death was sudden as the nation was not aware of his medical visit to South Africa, but only to be informed of his passing on June 5th 2025 is heartbreaking for the country.

Meanwhile, United Party for National Development (UPND) Media Consultant, Oliver Shalala stated that politicians should respect one another especially in such a solemn moment when the country is mourning a man who dedicated his life to politics.

MY WALK WITH EDGAR- Sakwiba Sikota

MY WALK WITH EDGAR

By Sakwiba Sikota, SC

The loss of the Sixth Republican President Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu has hit every person in Zambia. The United Liberal Party, of which I am president, has already put out a message of condolences to the bereaved family, party and nation.

This piece is not a formal but individual reflection on someone I had a very long and personal relationship. It is recollections of some of the interactions I had with the dearly departed Edgar Chagwa Lungu .

THE BEGINNING OF THE WALK WITH EDGAR

I first came across sixth Republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu in 1982 when he was still commonly called, “Edgar”.

To the end of his life I would refer to him as “Edgar” whenever we were alone or with his wife Esther. When in public or formally addressing him I would refer to him as “Your Excellency” or “Mr. President”. This is how comfortable we were with each other and how I recognized that my private relationship should only be shown when only in his presence or that of his wife.

His accepting me to call him Edgar in private also shows that the title of President did not go to his head and he realized that it is not the title but how you interact with people that makes you what you are.

Riches and fame cannot surpass a good soul. What he had in abundance was a good soul.

I first got acquainted with Edgar in 1982 when he was a learner Legal Practitioner at the Law Practice Institute and I was lecturing at the National Institute of Public Administration.

He was jovial and easy going making it easy for him to strike up friendships. What was also clear was that he had a very sharp mind.

When he was in the legal department of ZCCM and I was with then Chilanga and Company he would let us have some legal instructions from the mining conglomerate.

When he was contemplating stopping being in house counsel and going into private practice he asked me what I thought as I had been in private practice since 1983. I encouraged him to take the plunge which he did and joined Andrea Masiye and Co.

In 1995 I went with Edgar and also Late a Josephine Nyirongo, the then Treasurer of the Law Association of Zambia, on a seven week program in six different States in the USA to work in various different types of State legal aid systems. Edgar was a stand out participant during our tour. Edgar was already my friend but that seven weeks of close daily (and nightly) interaction cemented our bond even further.

In 1996 Edgar asked me to help him campaign in the Chawama Constituency election where he stood as an independent candidate. I donated a very modest sum to his campaign and once or twice actually went out on the stomp with him in Chawama.

Edgar therefore gave me my first taste of politics by inviting me to be part of his campaign. It was also his first. It was an impressive baptism as he came in second to soon to become Vice President Christon Tembo.

This result was impressive when you took into account that he was the only independent in a field of five candidates where all his opponents were sponsored by political parties.

He managed to get 20% of the vote compared to Christon Tembo’s 55% because of how he easily interacted with the constituents. As one of his foot soldiers i observed how he walked through Chawama casually chatting with the voters he came across.

After this I got the feel for active politics and got involved in the formation of the United Party For National Development (UPND) in 1998. I was the UPND’s first Legal Chairman. I called upon Edgar and invited him to be in the legal subcommittee of UPND that I formed. He therefore agreed to be a committee member in the committee his Chawama campaign foot soldier (Saki) chaired.

As we went towards the 2001 election the elections committee of UPND decided to adopt someone else as the candidate despite of the work Edgar had done in Chawama. Edgar at the last minute stood as an independent but did not do as expected due to his late entry into the race.

After the Gabon football disaster I got instructions to represent the families of the fallen football heroes. It was a large number of people to deal with. I asked if he would be interested to take on the case together with me and he accepted.

I am glad he accepted because any lawyer will tell you that class action suits are the hardest to manage and run. His people and communication skills came in very handy to a very volatile set of clients. The majority were fine but the very vocal minority needed the tact and skill of Edgar to manage.

There would be immense drama and Edgar would manage to handle the unruly ones amongst them. One day a small number of the group brought a small coffin and left it at our offices.

Edgar said we could turn this spiteful act into a source of relief for someone. Edgar learnt of an indigent family who had lost a child and suggested we donate it to them. We did and this simple act by Edgar eased the burden for a grieving family. Edgar took ‘making lemonade out of lemons’ to a brand new higher level.

We were both operating from the city centre which was increasingly not conducive to business as parking was a headache and petty crime was spiraling. I decided to seek offices out of town and found flats at Addis Ababa Drive around about that were being sold.

I invited Edgar and four other law firms to join me in acquiring the property and moving out of Cairo Road. We formed a special vehicle company to acquire the building and have punctured the myth thatZambians cannot work in partnership together. Mr. Masiye, Speaker Nellie Mutti, Sixth Republican President and myself have been together for over years.

Clearly Edgar was someone willing to work with others. When he went into government and thought he would not have enough time to attend to the property company we formed, Edgar gave me power of attorney limited to the affairs of the property.

Over the years he was comfortable to just receive reports as to what was happening in the company. This showed he had faith in humanity and did not feel only he had the answers.

When I lost my father Edgar dealt with the settlement of dads estate as he was already known by my father and my siblings. He provided the legal service on the basis of being practically family.

In the 2016 Petition Edgar asked me to be in his legal team because we had worked together on different cases over the ages and he was comfortable that he would get commitment and professionalism. What was good about working for him as his lawyers is that although he was a very intelligent lawyer (who graduated with a merit from UNZA) he did not pretend to be a know it all but, he listened to his lawyers advise.

When the Dan Pule and three others eligibility case was commenced Edgar felt comfortable to give me instructions to be in his legal team for the same.

Inspite of Edgar being head of State at the time of the case, it was clear that he did not put any pressure on the judges presiding on the case as he genuinely did not know in what direction they would rule.

UKA was an idea centered on bringing like minded opposition parties to work together. From the time Edgar came back into active politics he made this his passionate dedication and desire. He therefore linked up with Chishala Kateka and late Edith Nawakwi who were of a similar view and desire.

Chishala and Late Edith had both separately discussed the idea of opposition unity but did not let out that Edgar was part of the scheme. Infact when Chishala first approached me in March 2022 Edgar was in retirement and had not come back to active politics.

The first formal meeting when the original UKA members met was at late Edith Nawakwi’s residence. Edgar, although acknowledged by all of us as being of a different status to us insisted that we feel free to interact with him without holding back simply because he was a former President.

Some took this to be open liscence and we had a constant struggle to try to keep some in proper line. Edgar was willing to give us room to try and counsel and guide some of our colleagues.

Edgar initially showed tolerance towards some who spoke out of turn and allowed us to try and counsel them. Edgar was very accommodating and tolerant but at some stage he felt he could no longer take what he referred to as “the little girl”. We tried our best to counsel the”little girl” but this proved very difficult. On this task I must admit that I failed Edgar on the mission of mellowing certain characters; not from lack of trying but because of dealing with one or two very complex characters.

The day before Edgar left for South Africa I had agreed with him that we would meet to discuss the happenings in PF, TONSE and UKA. He told me he would be going to the airport for a flight to South Africa to try and get some treatment. What is striking is that he said to me, “I know the State will not allow me to board the plane and leave as they always do, so I will drop in to see you on my way back from the airport after they turn me back.

Edgar thought they would scuttle his trip out for his medical as they always did but, his team managed to outsmart the State machinery and he slipped out of the country. It was however too late for the doctors to do a full remedial job to restore his health.

This was the last interaction I had in the walk with Edgar my friend, professional colleague, co counsel, lawyer, client, family friend, candidate I was foot soldier for, business partner, principal who gave me Power of Attorney, recruit into UPND, committee member in my sub committee, the person who nominated me to chair the UKA project, advisor; but most of all MY PRESIDENT.

In the end it is inescapable that, as Edgar leaves me and all of us and walks away to our Lord in Heaven, Edgar is still PRESIDENT.

MAY HIS EXCELLENCY DR. EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU FINALLY BE ALLOWED TO REST IN PEACE

IF KAUNDA LED A NATION AT 40, TASILA AT 40 CAN LEAD HER FATHER’S FAREWELL !- Nachilima Cleopatra Chisala

IF KAUNDA LED A NATION AT 40, TASILA AT 40 CAN LEAD HER FATHER’S FAREWELL !

By Nachilima Cleopatra Chisala

If Dr. Kenneth Kaunda could become President of Zambia at 40, then surely Hon. Tasila Lungu Mwansa, at the same age, is more than capable of making decisions concerning her father’s funeral.

It is both ironic and hypocritical for a government that claims to champion women and youth participation to disregard the voice of a woman and youth leader when it matters most.

Leadership is not a reserve for a particular gender or age. Tasila is not a minor. She is a grown, elected representative and deserves the respect and authority to take charge of her late father’s funeral proceedings.

Let us not pick and choose when women and youth can lead. If we want true inclusivity and empowerment, we must trust women and youth with responsibility, even when the moment is emotionally charged and politically sensitive.

Tasila has earned that right, by her age, by her position, and by her family role.

Let women lead.

Let the youth lead.

And let Tasila Lungu Mwansa  lead.!

A HAPPY PENTECOST SUNDAY

Zambian Community in South Africa to Honour Late President Edgar Lungu with Memorial Service

Zambian Community in South Africa to Honour Late President Edgar Lungu with Memorial Service

Pretoria, South Africa – June 9, 2025

The Zambian community in South Africa will tomorrow hold a memorial service in honour of the late former President of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu, celebrating his life, leadership, and contributions to the nation and its diaspora.

The solemn event will take place on Tuesday, 10th June 2025, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, located at the corner of Nana Sita and Bosman Streets in Pretoria, beginning at 10:00 hours.

The announcement inviting all Zambian nationals living in South Africa reads:

“Peace and goodness in the Lord! The Memorial of our late Former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu will be held on Tuesday, the 10th of June 2025 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Pretoria.”

Among the late president’s many legacies, Zambians abroad will be reflecting deeply on his instrumental role in the actualization of dual citizenship a long-standing aspiration of the diaspora that became reality during his tenure. Under President Lungu’s leadership, Zambia operationalized provisions which allowed Zambians in the diaspora to legally reclaim and retain their Zambian nationality even after acquiring citizenship in other countries.

This progressive move strengthened ties between Zambia and its diaspora, unlocking economic, professional, and cultural opportunities for thousands of Zambians living abroad. It also empowered many to contribute more meaningfully to the country’s development without fear of losing their national identity.

President Lungu, who served as Head of State from 2015 to 2021, was widely regarded as a leader who upheld Zambia’s Christian character and emphasized national unity. His presidency oversaw major infrastructure projects, judicial reforms, and efforts to decentralize governance.

Tomorrow’s memorial is expected to draw hundreds of mourners, including diplomats, clergy, former officials, and ordinary citizens. The service will not only be a time of prayer and remembrance but also a moment to reflect on the enduring legacy of a leader who touched the lives of many at home and abroad.

May His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu rest in eternal peace.

Lungu was poisoned, Nakachinda tells international media

Lungu was poisoned, Nakachinda tells international media. Lungu was being treated in South Africa.

Nakachinda is basically accusing the South African government of poisoning Lungu.

The article below has been published in South Africa’s biggest daily newspaper: the Star.

Former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has died at the age of 68, with his final days clouded by political tension, medical struggles, and serious allegations of state-sponsored persecution.

Lungu passed away on Thursday in a South African hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.

However, the official silence on the cause of death and mounting accusations from his political allies have sparked a storm of controversy, including claims that the former head of state may have been poisoned to prevent him from contesting the 2026 presidential elections.

Lungu, who served as Zambia’s sixth president from 2015 to 2021, had announced a political comeback in late 2023 after years of relative quiet following his electoral defeat to current President Hakainde Hichilema (popularly known as HH).

But what began as a bid to return to the ballot box quickly turned into a contentious and, some claim, dangerous standoff with the ruling administration.

A Contested Comeback

Lungu’s return to politics was met with immediate resistance from the Hichilema-led government.

In December 2024, the Constitutional Court ruled that Lungu was ineligible to contest again, arguing that his first, partial term from 2015 to 2016 counted as a full term under Zambia’s constitutional two-term limit.

Lungu’s legal team and supporters decried the judgment as politically motivated, pointing to his widespread popularity among grassroots voters and within opposition coalitions as a threat to the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).

But critics say the court ruling was just the beginning of a broader campaign to shut Lungu out of national politics.

Stripped of Protection and Benefits

Soon after his political re-entry, Lungu was stripped of all retirement benefits typically afforded to former heads of state.

These included state-provided security, official transportation, medical support, and diplomatic privileges. The government justified the move by citing a legal provision that bars retired presidents from engaging in politics if they wish to retain those benefits.

While technically legal, the action had far-reaching consequences for Lungu’s safety and well-being. Without state protection, his movements were left exposed.

More alarmingly, his access to healthcare, particularly urgent specialist treatment, was severely limited. Sources within the Patriotic Front (PF), Lungu’s party, say repeated requests for travel permits to receive medical care abroad were delayed or denied.“He was denied not only political freedom but medical care too,” said a senior PF official.

“When it became clear that he needed to leave for urgent treatment, the government stalled. That decision may have cost him his life.”

Allegations of Poisoning

With the cause of Lungu’s death yet to be officially confirmed, speculation is growing that he may have been deliberately poisoned. Though no forensic evidence has been made public, the PF is calling for an independent international investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

His daughter, Tasila Lungu-Mwansa, confirmed in a public statement that her father had been unwell for weeks and had travelled to South Africa under medical supervision. However, she also alluded to the family’s belief that his condition may have been the result of “external interference” — a veiled reference to suspected foul play.

PF leaders have taken a more direct stance. “This was not a natural death,” said Brian Mundubile, a close ally of Lungu. “We believe this was orchestrated to eliminate him politically and permanently.”

Restricted Movement and Surveillance

Beyond the courtroom and hospital bed, Lungu’s daily life was increasingly policed. Police were reportedly stationed outside his home, monitoring his activities and restricting public engagements.

Even routine morning jogs and Sunday church services were flagged as political activity and discouraged or blocked by law enforcement.“It was humiliation, plain and simple,” said one family confidant. “He was a former president being treated like a common criminal just for exercising and praying.”

Human rights activists and opposition figures have condemned the government’s treatment of Lungu as not only unconstitutional but dangerous for Zambia’s democratic fabric. “What happened to President Lungu sets a dangerous precedent,” said a representative of the Zambia Human Rights Commission.

“If a former president can be silenced this way, what protection exists for the ordinary citizen?”

THE FUNERAL MUST BE MOVED FROM  THE PF SECRETARIAT…( Large  crowds without proper sanitation are causing a health risk…)- Thomas Sipalo

THE FUNERAL MUST BE MOVED FROM  THE PF SECRETARIAT…( Large  crowds without proper sanitation are causing a health risk…)

Yesterday, I joined thousands of Zambians at the PF secretariat to pay my respects to our late President ECL.

While the unity and turnout were truly inspiring, I was dismayed by the sanitation challenges at the venue. The limited toilet facilities are struggling to cope with the large number of mourners, creating unhygienic conditions that pose serious health risks.

Furthermore, the large number of parked cars is causing inconvenience to nearby businesses, including the fueling station opposite. It’s concerning that while some leaders are telling mourners to remain at the PF secretariat in protest with limited sanitation facilities they  easily sneak out to  access better sanitation facilities at home, leaving the majority of mourners to endure the poor conditions.

To avoid potential health implications, I strongly believe that the funeral ceremony should be relocated to a more suitable venue, such as Belvedere Lodge, where sanitation and hygiene can be better managed as suggested by Govt.

Alternatively, if the mourners aren’t comfortable with Belvedere Lodge, the ceremony could be moved to a bigger place with mobile toilets provided to cater to the large number of people.

Let’s prioritize the health and comfort of our people during this difficult time. I urge the relevant authorities and senior party leaders to put their ego aside and take immediate action to address this pressing issue.
I remain,
Thomas Sipalo,
Komboni President.

PF Warns Against Insults to Late President ECL, Vows to Honor His Legacy with Dignity

By: Sun FM TV Reporter

The opposition Patriotic Front (PF) has issued a strong warning to individuals insulting the late former President Edgar Lungu, calling for an immediate end to what they describe as hypocritical attacks on his legacy.

Speaking at the PF secretariat, acting party president Given Lubinda criticized political figures who, during Lungu’s presidency, refused to acknowledge him and even accused him of corruption, only to now attempt to rewrite history.

Lubinda emphasized that while the government has declared a seven-day national mourning period, the PF’s mourning began the moment President Lungu passed away and will continue undeterred.

Lubinda has directed all PF members to continue using the PF secretariat and party offices nationwide as official venues for mourning and funeral-related gatherings, ensuring that Lungu’s contributions to Zambia are remembered with dignity and respect.

In whatever circumstance God himself saw it fit to that a man needs a woman and also cursed him with an everlasting morning urge for the rest of his life to remind him of his sacred natural duty of procreation. What is fame of kingdom without the descendants okay what is a king without a heir ? But the basic question first is who to be the queen.

In new life of the King lion of TikTok things are abit different.. perhaps you another structure in the kings court was to be instituted to handle his affection lifestyle away from social media but the king being the king he had all the time to search more over his lifestyle he can’t trust anyone just like that. Lungu Was Subjected to Humiliation Until His Death – Nakacinda

Patriotic Front Secretary General Raphael Nakacinda has alleged that former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu might still be alive today if the current administration, led by President Hakainde Hichilema, had not delayed or obstructed his access to medical treatment.

Speaking in the wake of Lungu’s passing, Nakacinda claimed that the late president was “subjected to humiliation until his death,” citing restrictions that allegedly prevented him from seeking timely medical attention abroad.

“Had the current Zambian regime not prevented him from accessing treatment earlier, President Lungu would still be with us,” Nakacinda stated.

Former President Lungu died last week while receiving medical care in Pretoria, South Africa, for a recurring condition known as achalasia a rare disorder that causes narrowing of the esophagus and interferes with swallowing.

ANALYSIS: The Democracy question after Edgar Lungu
…who becomes the black Moses?

ANALYSIS: The Democracy question after Edgar Lungu
…who becomes the black Moses?

Amb. Anthony Mukwita wrote:

8 June 2025

Zambia is mourning.

We are draped in black not just in fabric but in spirit, following the passing of our sixth Republican President, His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

At only 68, just a breath away from 69, he leaves behind his wife Esther, his children—and, figuratively, 20 million broken hearts and dreams.

His successor, President Hakainde Hichilema, has—as our guidelines demands—declared seven days of national mourning. Flags are at half-mast. Guns will fire salutes.

And all our foreign missions are bathed in solemnity, saluting the life of a man who governed in turbulent times yet never lost the common touch.

But amidst the mourning, there is murmuring.

The kind that asks: What now? What happens after the final trumpet fades?

After the casket is lowered and the wreaths wilt?
This is not just about saying goodbye to ECL—it’s also about searching for who will pick up the mantle of meaningful opposition, the very heartbeat of any true democracy.

Because let’s be honest: democracy without opposition is like trying to grow a flower without rain. Nothing grows.

Under Lungu’s watch from January 2015 to August 2021, it was the then-opposition UPND and Don H that kept the government on its toes.

Now the script has flipped, and with ECL gone, the stage lights dim on a once mighty PF. Who now will carry the fire?

A MAN CALLED ZAYELO THE HOMBRE OF KABWATA

Enter Given Lubinda —the seasoned statesman who has taken up the PF’s reins. Calm in public, strategic in private, Lubinda has emerged as a dignified mourner-in-chief.

He’s urged the rank and file to grieve in peace, not protest. And they’ve listened, perhaps because they know the man they mourn would’ve wanted nothing less than peace.

Still, the looming question persists: Is he the next Capo dei Capo?
Zambia heads into another election cycle within a year. While Hichilema enjoys his incumbency advantage, the opposition space is stirring.

If Lungu was our reluctant King, who will be the next knight?

Kelvin Fube Bwalya —KBF

KBF—sharp-tongued lawyer, slick dresser, and fearless debater—has emerged as a contender.

He’s got jokes and legal muscle in equal measure. Some say he’s one of Zambia’s finest lawyers. Others say he’s the political comeback kid.

Either way, he’s not to be ignored. From the northern bloc, he brings not just wit, but votes.

Fred M’membe —the Editor-Turned-Politician
Then there’s Dr. Fred M’membe. The man behind The Post—a newspaper many of us feared, worked for, admired, or all.

A socialist, a visionary to others, M’membe blends intellect with grit. He’s got fundraising muscle, political scars, and the courage to square off with any regime. Politics, for him, is not theatre—it’s war service.
He doesn’t lay down the arms.

Harry Kalaba —the Diplomatic Warrior

Harry Kalaba’s name still rings with potential. In 2021, he ran a distant but respectable third, outshining veterans who had campaigned for decades.

He’s youthful, articulate, and battle-tested. His time as Foreign Affairs Minister gave him global footing; his campaigns give him grassroots pull. If wisdom came in a bottle, Kalaba’s would be aged and bottled at source.

While others stay and make political statements for one reason or another, Kalaba traverses the hills and rivers of Zambia campaigning for a vote and creating facial political recognition.

National facial recognition is crucial in a presidential political race, it could make or break one and Kalaba knows this.

Brian Mundubile —the Calm Strategist

Mundubile is a quiet force. I first met him in 2005 when he was a businessman with a voice deep enough to wake sleeping voters. He is deliberate, calculating, and deeply spiritual.

A man of the cloth and the Constitution. His political rise under Lungu was not accidental. He’s respected in Parliament and in the pews. That calm could be just what Zambia needs in chaotic times.

Now, let me confess: this list isn’t from some Harvard study. It’s just me, thinking out loud, from the heart. Who among these—or perhaps someone unknown—will emerge to keep the balance, to keep the ruling party honest? Can we find another ECL?

Someone with humility, a good laugh, and enough courage to walk into the fire and not flinch?

Lungu was a paradox—tough yet tender, commanding yet compassionate.

I knew him personally. He could break into a grin mid-argument and offer you tea mid-dispute. That’s not politics, that’s being human.

And politics, at its best, must be humane.

He built roads, airports, bridges, power dams—and hearts. His legacy isn’t just concrete; it’s in the conversations he left behind, the dignity he carried even when critics barked the loudest. He didn’t shout back—he listened.

Given Lubinda put it aptly when he said Lungu must be mourned in peace. I echo that. So did the economist Lubinda Haabazoka, who called for calm reflection and respect for the former First Lady Esther Lungu. We need that now more than ever.

Because when all is said and done, Zambia must remain what it has always been: the last bastion of peace on a noisy continent.

A place where even in mourning, we dance a little, cry a little, and still offer each other nshima with kindness.

May Edgar Chagwa Lungu rest in eternal peace. And may his memory remind us that opposition is not just politics—it’s patriotism with a conscience, it grows democracy.

MINISTER JACK MWIIMBU RISKS GOING TO JAIL WARNS KBF

MINISTER JACK MWIIMBU RISKS GOING TO JAIL WARNS KBF

By Tony Nkhoma
MINISTER of Home Affairs Jack Mwiimbu is not a principled man and must resign or else he will be jailed in future, Zambia Must Prosper (ZMP) leader Kelvin Fube Bwalya  has warned.

In a stern warning, Bwalya wondered what had changed with Mwiimbu for him to support a bill which was more evil than the Bill 10 which did not pass in Parliament.

He reminded Mwiimbu to recall that he had joined in the celebrations at Community House when Bill 10 failed to go through in Parliament.

“Let me remind senior lawyers within UPND [United Party for National Development]. If they still want us to respect them as members of the Bar, the honourable Jack Mwiimbu, State Council, minister of home affairs, there are clips of you when you were in opposition. You were Mwiimbu, fighting for the Zambians when Bill 10 was in the process. You were saying, no, you’re on the side of the people,” Bwalya said.

He wondered why Mwiimbu was now not with the people but instead supporting the suspicious Constitution (Amendment) Bill N0. 7 of 2025 which Zambians had rejected.

Addressing the media in Lusaka Thursday, Bwalya said Mwiimbu was a pretender because he was on record saying the Constitution could not be amended without consultation with the people.

Government says they are determined to give Edgar Lungu a dignified send off with military honours

Government says they are determined to give Edgar Lungu a dignified send off with military honours – Government

GOVERNMENT has revealed that late former president Edgar Lungu, shall be given a dignified send off with military honours and a cortège.

The full military honours include the presidential gun salute, guard of honour and fly past.

According to Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe, President Hakainde Hichilema is saddened by the death of his predecessor, adding that the Head of State had to make a statement immediately he learnt of the demise of Lungu on Thursday.

“The manner in which an announcement is made is not the issue, Facebook is one of the quicker ways of communicating. The President also through secretary to the Cabinet  made a statement and remember that there are processes that need to be undertaken to verify and that may have been the issue because the President cannot comment or react before the information is verified,” he said.

Haimbe advised the nation to focus on mourning the late former president in a respectful way that will in turn give dignity to the funeral.

“We need to focus on a proper send off for our former Head of State instead of focusing on what happened when he was alive. We must focus on sending President Lungu in a befitting way, let’s not focus on people asking questions and making statements that bring about division,” he said on Diamond TV’s Costa programme.

“We will give our late President a dignified send off like late President KK’s (Kenneth Kaunda) which was what all of us Zambians appreciated, with military honours and cortège. Let’s not enter into political discourse. If we are to send him in a dignified way then we should be able to unite even when we are coming from different political backgrounds.”

He added that the Secretary to the Cabinet will  give the nation more updates on the funeral arrangements either before the remains are repatriated to Zambia or after it is in the country.

LET’S MOURN ECL IN PEACE, LET’S HONOUR HIS LEGACY

Sinkamba Peter

LET’S MOURN ECL IN PEACE, LET’S HONOUR HIS LEGACY

ECL was a humble person, naturally. He was a peaceful person, naturally. Thus, his presidency was a humble one. And his presidency was a peaceful one. Peace is his legacy.

Save for some overzealous characters- the so called commanders- who took advantage of his humbleness to reign terror in isolated scenarios. Nonetheless, the list of such characters is nothing to write home about at macro level.

Because he was a man of peace, it goes without saying that let’s mourn him in peace. There is no need for extremism on both sides- government and family.

From press and social media postings, the sticky issue, which may degenerate into chaos is on the role of government involvement in the funeral programme. From reports sighted, family wants to take a leading role in the funeral programme. And I see no problem with that.

To demonstrate my point, let me unpack this myth called “funeral programme” for our beloved late President.

He died in South Africa. His remain are still in South Africa. Essentially, the family has this far handled all issues concerning persevation of the remains. There is no evidence to show that government has played a part on this sub-component of the funeral programme. There is also no evidence to show that government is paying for the upkeep expenses of the widow. There is also no evidence to show that government is paying for the expenses of the mourners grieving with the widow in South Africa. Therefore, it goes without saying that the family is taking a lead and meeting the expenses of this sub-component of the funeral programme.

Second sub-component is repatriation of the remains. Government has offered to transport the remains back home. The family also offered to do so. I am not clear the final decision on this issue.

However, I think that this issue is a simple. If the South African government is requested to do so, I do not think that they would decline to help in this regard. I also do not think that such a gesture by the South African government would be contentious. I think that both the family and government would welcome it.

The question is: who will approach the South African government to do so? Mind you, the South African government is alive to the acrimonious relationship between the Lungu family and the Zambian government. So, in line with the Vienna Convention, the South African government will watch from the terraces unless and until directly requested to do so by the Zambian government. Due to the mistrust existing between the Zambia government and the Lungu family, it only makes sense that a neutral person of entity repatriates the remains back home.

The next sub-component of the funeral programme is arrival of the remains. As former CiC of the armed forces, naturally the defence forces are obliged to receive the remains of their former Commander. I have not seen or heard any statement from the family that excludes defence and security personel from being involved in the funeral programme. Thus, this sub-component of the programme does not appear to me to be contentious. The defence and security personnel will therefore perform their welcoming rituals per their military tradition without any hullabaloo.

The next sub-component is storage of the body. Will it be taken to a mortuary or lie in state at his residence? As indicated above, there is mistrust between government and family. Therefore, the family may choose to keep the body at his residence or other neutral venue in agreement with the family. I presume that the embalming of the body in South Africa was top class. So keeping it at home or other non-refridgerated place, for a day or two, ought not be an issue.

The next sub-component is burial day. The defence and security personnel may take up this sub-component, to deliver the remains from his home or whatever mutually agreed upon venue, for church service. Traditionally, church service for former presidents is held at Anglican Cathedral. This is so because the Anglican Cathedral was from the 1960s the largest and most central church in Lusaka. So most government related church programmes have been held there. But Anglican Cathedral is no longer the largest church premise in Lusaka . Several other churches@, even bigger, have since been constructed and are operational. Therefore, any big church of choice by the family can serve the purpose. After all, there is no law that prescribes the Anglican Cathedral as the sole venue for such programmes.

The next sub-component is directing the church programme. Since this is a quasi-military funeral, the defence and security personnel can sit down with the family to agree on the church programme. After all, no church programme for any funeral in Zambia is drawn without consultation or in agreement with the family.

The last component of the funeral is burial. Again, this is quasi-military funeral. So from whatever church, the military takes over up to Embassy Memorial Park where the military rituals will take place.

Personally, I dont think that there is a problem. There is no need for hotheading. Let’s follow the steps outlined above. And we will bury our beloved 6th President peacefully, in honour of his peace legacy.

GOVERNANCE EXPERT CALLS ON CHURCH TO INTERVENE IN STANDOFF OVER LATE FORMER PRESIDENT LUNGU’S FUNERAL

GOVERNANCE EXPERT CALLS ON CHURCH TO INTERVENE IN STANDOFF OVER LATE FORMER PRESIDENT LUNGU’S FUNERAL

By Patricia Mbewe

Governance and elections expert Stanley Mhango is calling on the church to intervene in the current standoff between the family, party members, and other stakeholders over the funeral proceedings of the late former president Edgar Lungu.

A standoff has arisen between the government and former president Edgar Lungu’s family over funeral arrangements, following the government’s move to repatriate his remains to Zambia which the family has rejected, requesting that the government refrain from involvement in both the repatriation and funeral rites, citing the late president’s personal wishes.

Mr.  Mhango is urging the church leadership to play a pivotal role in guiding the nation during this sensitive period, promoting peace, and fostering unity.

He has told Phoenix News that the church, as moral custodians, is uniquely positioned to provide counsel and support while appealing to all parties involved to exercise restraint, understanding, and a spirit of compromise.

Mr. Mhango has further appealed to president Hakainde Hichilema to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the standoff as the country awaits the repatriation of Mr. Lungu’s remains from South Africa.

Bill 7 says by-elections will only be held for independent candidates

Bill 7 says by-elections will only be held for independent candidates

THE proposed Constitution Amendment, Bill 7 of 2025 wants to change how by-elections are done in Zambia and will only allow them to happen when an independent Member of Parliament (MP), mayor, council chairperson or councillor leaves office or dies.

Right now, if an MP, mayor, council chairperson or councillor loses their seat by resigning or dying, a by-election is held so that people can vote for someone new.

But if Bill 7 is passed, by-elections will only happen if the person who left the position was an independent candidate, meaning someone who didn’t belong to any political party.

According to the proposed amendment to Article 266 of the Constitution, the new definition of a by-election will be, “an election to fill a vacancy in the office of an independent Member of Parliament holding a constituency-based seat, independent mayor, council chairperson or councillor.”

For candidates who belonged to a political party, the party will have to just choose someone else to replace their candidate, which will require no voting or by-election as the replacement will finish the rest of the term in Parliament

The new Bill also says the Speaker of the National Assembly must write to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) within seven days after a seat becomes vacant.

The political party will then be given time to submit the name of the new person taking over the seat.

“Where a vacancy occurs in the National Assembly for a Member of Parliament, the Speaker shall, within seven days of the occurrence of the vacancy, inform the Electoral Commission of the vacancy in writing, and the political party that sponsored the member who held the seat shall elect another person to replace that member to assume that seat in the National Assembly,” reads the Bill, aimed at amending Article 72 of the Constitution of Zambia.

The replacement must meet all the normal requirements to be an MP under Article 70 and will serve for the rest of the Parliament’s term.

In short, this Bill wants to cut down the number of by-elections and save money, especially for positions that were held by people from political parties.

Another part of the new Bill says that no seats can be filled in the last six months before a general election.

“A vacancy shall not be filled within the one hundred and eighty day period that precedes a general election,” reads the Bill.

If passed, the changes will only apply to seats held by party sponsored candidates and independents will still face by-elections if they lose their seats…https://kalemba.news/politics/bill-7-says-by-elections-will-only-be-held-for-independent-candidates/

Let Us Not Be Hypocritical About Dignity

Let Us Not Be Hypocritical About Dignity

While calls for a dignified and respectful funeral for the late Sixth Republican President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, are indeed noble and necessary, they ring hollow without an honest reflection on how he was treated in his final years.

It is public knowledge that President Lungu our former Head of State and Commander-in-Chief was subjected to repeated political humiliation, unlawful harassment, and systematic character assassination. Despite the constitutional guarantees accorded to former presidents, he was denied his full benefits, his security was stripped, and his public appearances were routinely disrupted by State machinery.

Most disturbingly, he was reportedly blocked from traveling abroad for medical attention, a basic human right that even ordinary citizens are entitled to.

Today, those who presided over or remained silent in the face of such degrading treatment want to preach unity and national mourning. But dignity in death must be preceded by dignity in life.

You cannot strip a man of honor while he is alive and expect to clothe him with borrowed respect when he is gone.

If this nation truly believes in One Zambia, One Nation, then that spirit should have guided how we treated President Lungu all along not just in his death, but in his retirement and illness. Let this moment not become a political smokescreen, but a time for true introspection.

As Zambians, we are not against mourning what we reject is hypocrisy dressed as unity.

Russia Unveils Statue of Nelson Mandela, former South African Leader
After several months of negotiations, Moscow finally erected a memorable statue, honoring South Africa’s most revered political leader and reconciliatory hero, Nelson Mandela. The statue, located in an obscure corner in southwestern district of Moscow city, became a new symbol of friendship between Russia and South Africa, and possibly with other African countries.

On September 9, 2024, Moscow witnessed an important cultural and historical event – the unveiling of a monument to Nelson Mandela, symbolizing the recognition of his incredible contribution to the fight for human rights and the liberation from colonial oppression on the African continent.

The monument was created by the Russian Military-Historical Society with the support of the Moscow Government. The sculptor is Mikhail Baskakov. The monument is located at the intersection of Michurinsky Prospect and Ramensky Boulevard.

In honor of this event, the Russian-African Club of Lomonosov Moscow State University created a film that deeply reveals the life path and achievements of this legendary leader. The film is available on the YouTube channel in Russian, English, and French .

Zimbabwe’s Bedroom Crisis: 1 in 4 Married Women Say They’re Going Without Intimacy

“Too tired” husbands blamed for intimacy crisis in Zimbabwean bedrooms
A staggering 26% of married women in Zimbabwe say they had no sexual activity in the past four weeks, according to new findings from the 2023–24 Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS). The report highlights a widespread but often unspoken drought in Zimbabwean bedrooms, with nearly 1 in 4 women living in sexless marriages.

The ZDHS was implemented by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) with funding support from the Government of Zimbabwe, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GF).

“57% of women and 55% of men aged 15–49 reported having sex in the last four weeks. However, 26% of married women said they had no recent sexual activity—compared to fewer men in the same category,” the report states.

While much of the national conversation around marriage centres on finances and raising children, affection and intimacy are quietly vanishing from many homes.

The latest data suggest that husbands are increasingly distant—emotionally and physically—leaving their wives in sexually inactive relationships that often remain unspoken.

Stressed men, strained marriages
Marriage counsellors report a growing number of cases involving intimacy breakdowns. The most cited reason is stress, overwork, and fatigue—mainly among men.

Zimbabwean men, particularly in cities, are under mounting pressure to provide, manage side hustles, and endure long workdays. At home, many retreat into television, mobile phones, or silence, leaving little room for closeness with their spouses.

In many households, intimacy is treated as a low priority—something optional that can be delayed or skipped entirely. Experts warn that this mindset is slowly weakening the emotional bond between couples.

Beyond the bedroom: deeper social trends
The ZDHS findings highlight a range of social patterns that may be contributing to the lack of intimacy:

Only 16% of urban women and 4% of rural women have formally registered marriages, leaving many in informal unions with little structure or legal recognition.

10% of married women report that their husbands have more than one wife, with figures higher in provinces like Manicaland. Even in ostensibly monogamous unions, suspicion of infidelity is common.

The median age of first marriage for women is 19.4 years, while for men it is 24.9. These age differences can lead to diverging emotional and physical needs over time.

Marriage breakdowns are rising, with 12% of women listed as divorced or separated, more than double the rate for men. A lack of physical intimacy is frequently cited in counselling sessions as a contributing factor.

These patterns point to a broader emotional and cultural shift, not just physical fatigue.

Crisis or new normal?
Lack of intimacy is often the first sign of deeper emotional detachment. Many couples avoid the subject altogether, allowing resentment and loneliness to grow in silence.

With one in four women essentially in sexless marriages, experts are concerned that the emotional health of families is being undermined. Left unaddressed, such disconnection can lead to infidelity, divorce, or long-term emotional numbness.

What’s next for Zimbabwean couples?

Whether caused by economic exhaustion, shifting priorities, or unresolved conflict, the message is clear: Zimbabwean marriages are under emotional strain, and the bedroom is often the first place where this shows.

Counsellors are calling for honest conversations in households and communities, encouraging couples—especially men—to rethink their emotional availability and the value of physical connection.

As the country grapples with these findings, a key question emerges:

Are Zimbabwean marriages quietly falling apart behind closed doors—and who will speak up before more homes go cold?

“He’s Alive” – Ex Minister Attacked With Axe In Suspected Love Triangle

Shock as ex-minister survives brutal axe attack

Former Cabinet Minister and long-serving Binga South MP, Joel Gabbuza, is recovering in hospital after a suspected love triangle turned violent. The politician was reportedly attacked with an axe by a man who accused him of having an affair with his wife

False rumours of Gabbuza’s death had spread quickly. But his family says he is very much alive.

“He is receiving treatment at Hwange Colliery Hospital. His condition has improved from last night, he is now able to speak,” said his son in a brief telephone interview with CITE.

“We are making arrangements to transfer him to Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo,”
he added.

Love triangle suspicions behind the attack
Sources say the alleged attacker suspected Gabbuza of being romantically involved with his wife. The incident is believed to have occurred late on Friday, 7th June 2025.

Police have not yet issued an official statement. However, locals say the motive appears personal.

Unconfirmed reports indicate the attacker fled the scene. Authorities are believed to be investigating the incident.

Gabbuza’s long political career
Gabbuza’s political career spanned over two decades. He was first elected in 2000 as MP for Binga under the MDC banner. Following electoral boundary changes in 2008, he represented Binga South until his recall in October 2023.

Joel Gabuza was the Zimbabwe Minister of Water Resources and Development from 2009 during the Government of National Unity formed between the ruling ZanuPF and the opposition, and held office until 2013 when a new cabinet was appointed, and Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri was appointed as the new Minister of Water and Climate.

South Africans mock Afriforum As Donald Trump and Elon Musk Fight Gets Ugly
In a recent post on X, Donald Trump publicly debunked the rumours that there was white genocide in South AFrica. The American president in the past weeks had been very vocal about cutting funding to South AFrica because of the white genocide narrative.

President Cyril Ramaphosa even went to Washington DC to engage in talks with Trump. During the visit, the American president was adamant about his narrative and refused to consider alternative perspectives. He even started relocating some white Afrikaners to America.

However, Trump and Elon Musk are having a very public fallout, and the American president has changed his stance on the white genocide narrative. Trump posted on X:

There’s no WHITE GENOCIDE in South Africa

Mzansi Reacts
Many South Africans have been mocking Afriforum on social media after Trump’s statement.

Trump threatens LA protesters in overnight rant after sending in the troops

Hours after sending in federalized National Guard troops into Los Angeles to support DHS and ICE agents who have been taking part in highly militarized raids on businesses in California and snatching up immigrants, Donald Trump threatened the pro-immigrant protesters.

After days of raids, involving CS gas, “less than lethal” rounds fired at protesters, and use flash bang grenades that have infuriated Californians, Trump fell short of invoking the Insurrection Act but still sent in a reported 2,000 National Guardsman.

He then took to Truth Social, to warn protesters that they will not be allowed to wear masks in the same manner that ICE and DHS agents have done to protect their identities.

The president wrote, “Great job by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes and unrest. We have an incompetent Governor (Newscum) and Mayor (Bass) who were, as usual (just look at how they handled the fires, and now their VERY SLOW PERMITTING disaster. Federal permitting is complete!), unable to to handle the task.”

He then warned, “These Radical Left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will NOT BE TOLERATED. Also, from now on, MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide, and why??? Again, thank you to the National Guard for a job well done!”
