ZAMBIA’s PATH TO JUSTICE LIES IN UNITY says Dr. M’membe in Sabbath Message

ZAMBIA’s PATH TO JUSTICE LIES IN UNITY

….says Dr. M’membe in Sabbath Message

Lusaka… Saturday April 26, 2025 — In a statement delivered on the Sabbath, Dr. Fred M’membe, has extended warm greetings to the nation, once more calling on all progressive forces to unite in the struggle for justice, equity, and human dignity.

Speaking on behalf of the Socialist Party, Dr. M’membe addressed comrades in opposition politics, the labour movement, the Church, student bodies, and the business community.

He described the day as one of “rest, reflection, and renewal,” and emphasized the need for solidarity among all who seek a better Zambia.

Dr. M’membe lamented the current state of the nation, asserting that widespread poverty, unemployment, and hopelessness were not coincidental, but rather a direct result of “reckless mismanagement” and “anti-poor governance” of President Hakainde Hichilema and the ruling UPND.

He called out the regime for betraying the people it had vowed to uplift.

Despite the challenges, Dr. M’membe urged citizens not to allow dissatisfaction or despair to create divisions.

He stated that unity was not a luxury but a necessity, and warned that without tolerance and cooperation among progressive groups, the nation would remain “fragmented and weak in the face of tyrænny.”

He stressed that only a united front, based on mutual respect and shared purpose, could dismantle oppressive systems and lead Zambia toward a future of dignity, self-reliance, and economic justice.

Concluding his address, Dr. M’membe reminded the public that “true power lies in the collective will of the people,” and that the people were looking for leadership that unites rather than divides.

He expressed confidence that, through solidarity, the country would overcome its current challenges.

LUNGU CALLS FOR CEASEFIRE, APPOINTS LUBINDA TO ACT AS TONSE ALLIANCE CHAIRMAN

LUNGU CALLS FOR CEASEFIRE, APPOINTS LUBINDA TO ACT AS TONSE ALLIANCE CHAIRMAN

Fellow countrymen, women and the youths,

As my Bemba brothers say, “imiti iipalamene taibula kushenkana”, meaning, ‘the trees that grow together will inevitably rub each other.’

Over the past few days, the country has been subjected to minor political machinations. But let me remind you that Tonse Alliance is intact. The Alliance was born from a collective desire to offer you, the people of Zambia, firm and grounded hope and stability that generations to come will appreciate and applaud.

Countrymen, women and youths, allow me to speak as Patriotic Front President and Tonse Alliance Chairperson. Allow me to address a few issues that have been raised and discussed in the public domain concerning the Patriotic Front senior leaders and Tonse Alliance.

The Patriotic Front party is a member and anchor party of the Tonse Alliance, and if the party leaders are seen galvanizing other political parties, that does not mean the Alliance agreement is set aside. The Tonse Alliance cannot start to target the Patriotic Front senior members with disciplinary action in such a disrespectful manner without my guidance. Without PF, Tonse Alliance would not be as strong and feared by our opponents as it is. Tonse is strong because of the strength of PF, and it is for this reason the Alliance keeps attracting other partners as it has.

Fellow politicians in Tonse or outside Tonse, as we have agreed as opposition that we have one enemy, let us never give our enemy any chance to continue destroying our Zambia and the lives of our citizens. What Zambia needs today is a united opposition that will address the humongous challenges that Zambia is going through.

In view of the aforementioned, allow me to set the record straight. In my absence, Hon. Given Lubinda, who is the PF Vice-President, will act for and on behalf of the Patriotic Front and myself as Tonse Alliance Chairperson, he will continue to garner more support from all other opposition political parties for the Tonse Alliance.

In this regard, all communiques will come through the acting Chairperson, Hon. Lubinda, and all members are reminded to respect the structure and integrity of the anchor party and the Tonse Alliance.

Zambia is at the crossroads, therefore, unity and respect are our greatest strengths. Our goal is the same: to serve and uplift the people of Zambia.

I am now calling for an immediate ceasefire to all these little issues in Tonse and hereby revoke all disciplinary letters that have been issued to PF senior leaders or any other Tonse Alliance members. In the same vein, I have since directed our PF Party Secretary General to immediately convene a Central Committee meeting that I will co-chair.

Let us not be distracted by minor differences or disagreements. Instead, let us deepen our collaboration, support one another, and guard the unity we have built.

The challenges before us demand our full attention. Our citizens are looking up to us not for conflict, but for leadership, compassion, and solutions.

To all members of the opposition, let this be our call to stand together not in competition, but in service to our great nation. When we respect each other, listen to each other, and stand side by side, we become the change our people are yearning for.

We may be tested, yes, but we are not falling. Our roots are deep. Our resolve is strong. And our path ahead is clear.

Together, we believe. Together, we serve. Together, we will build the Zambia we all deserve.

Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu
Sixth President of Zambia
PF Party President/ Tonse Alliance Chairperson

DR. M’MEMBE PAYS TRIBUTE TO POPE FRANCIS

DR. M’MEMBE PAYS TRIBUTE TO POPE FRANCIS

…Hailing Him as a Champion of the Poor and a Model Christian Leader

Lusaka… Friday April 25, 2025 – In a heartfelt tribute following the passing of Pope Francis, Dr. Fred M’membe, President of the Socialist Party, expressed deep sorrow and profound gratitude for the Pope’s lifelong dedication to justice, humility, and reform within the Catholic Church.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1CocS8u389/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Dr. M’membe thanked Pope Francis for his courage in standing up for the poor, refugees, and the voiceless around the world.

He praised the Pope’s unwavering faith, humility, and kindness, calling him a man of peace and a true example for world leaders.

Expressing sadness at the Pope’s absence, Dr. M’membe noted that the Church had lost a vital voice who had led it boldly on the synodal path and had fearlessly denounced injustices, particularly modern-day slavery and violations of human rights.

He also acknowledged the Pope’s passionate call for environmental protection and support for “our common home.”

Dr. M’membe described Pope Francis as a shining example of Christian living, commending his simple lifestyle and rejection of materialism and the “false gods of capitalism and consumerism.”

He shared his personal admiration for the Pope’s writings, stating that he had found great comfort in the Pontiff’s words.

He went on to thank the late Pope for his efforts to reform the Catholic Church, describing them as necessary and long overdue.

According to Dr. M’membe, the Pope’s legacy would live on through his teachings of love, respect, and kindness.

He concluded his tribute by pledging to remember the Pope’s deep faith, great humility, and immense humanity, and he humbly asked the Pope to continue praying for him and his family.

Dr. M’membe ended his statement by wishing Pope Francis eternal peace.

ZAMBIA DESERVES LEADERSHIP, NOT LOYALTY CULTS — SAYS DR. MUSONDA

ZAMBIA DESERVES LEADERSHIP, NOT LOYALTY CULTS — SAYS DR. MUSONDA

Lusaka… Friday April 25, 2025 — Dr. Joseph Musonda, the Information and Publicity Chairperson of the Socialist Party National Youth League, has criticized recent remarks made by Dr. Nevers Mumba in defense of President Hakainde Hichilema, describing them as misguided and dismissive of legitimate political dissent.

Dr. Musonda took issue with Dr. Mumba’s characterization of opposition politics as being driven by “hatred,” stating that such a view was “intellectually lazy and politically dangerous.”

He argued that dismissing opposition critique as mere hatred was an attempt to suppress democratic accountability and ignore the frustrations of ordinary Zambians.

He emphasized that leadership was not about being loved or popular, but about delivering results and being accountable to the people.

Dr. Musonda stated that love is not a requirement in leadership — but that justice, results, and accountability are.

Citing the economic hardships facing the country, including the high cost of living and youth unemployment, Dr. Musonda questioned why public dissatisfaction with the UPND administration had grown, even among its former supporters.

He suggested that the root of this disillusionment might lie in unfulfilled promises, elite capture of public institutions, and a growing gap between government and citizens.

Dr. Musonda also challenged Dr. Mumba’s argument that President Hichilema inherited a struggling economy, saying that leaders are not elected to lament the past but to solve problems.

He called on political leaders to stop “moralizing the public’s frustration” and instead focus on meaningful solutions.

Highlighting the historical importance of holding leaders accountable, Dr. Musonda maintained that critique was not a sign of hatred but of patriotism.

He insisted that the role of the opposition was not to admire the President, but to question and challenge government policy while offering alternatives for national progress.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Musonda reminded the public that President Hichilema’s legacy would ultimately be shaped not by admiration but by the expectations he met — or failed to meet — in the eyes of the people.

“Zambia deserves leadership,” he stressed, “not loyalty cults.”

CHIPANGALI COUNCIL RECEIVES ADDITIONAL FUNDS TO BOOST COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

CHIPANGALI COUNCIL RECEIVES ADDITIONAL FUNDS TO BOOST COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Chipangali Council Chairperson Maxson Nkhoma says Chipangali Town Council in Eastern Province has received supplementary funding for the Cash for Work programme and Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

In an interview, Mr Nkhoma said the development will steer service delivery and implement community projects, including the loan component of CDF.

He disclosed that the local authority recently received 5 Million Kwacha to pay workers under the Cash for Work programme, in addition to the 4.7 Million Kwacha received last month.

Mr Nkhoma confirmed that the new funding will allow the council to clear outstanding payments for workers who had not been paid due to funding delays.

The Council Chairperson revealed that an additional 10.3 Million Kwacha has been allocated for CDF, with a significant portion directed towards loans and enhancing service delivery through community projects in various wards across the district.

He urged residents to remain patient, reassuring them that council officers are working tirelessly to begin processing payments next week.

The Chairperson commended the central government for prioritising funding to Chipangali District, ensuring the success of both the Cash for Work programme and CDF initiatives.

Mr Nkhoma called on council officers to uphold the highest standards of accountability and integrity when managing these funds to foster public confidence in the local authority.

MTN has confirmed it recently experienced a cyber attack

MTN Nigeria has confirmed it recently experienced a cyber attack but assured customers, partners, and stakeholders that its core infrastructure remains secure and that Nigeria was not affected.

In a statement released on Thursday, April 24, the telecommunications company revealed it detected unauthorized activity within its network systems and responded promptly to isolate and contain the breach.

Chief Executive Officer Karl Toriola said that early investigations show the attackers tried to disrupt services but failed to compromise critical systems, including customer data and core operations. “We take cybersecurity very seriously and have robust systems in place to detect, isolate, and neutralize threats,” Toriola stated. “Although this attack attempted to breach our defenses, our security protocols worked as intended, and our core infrastructure remains secure.”

While the company did not provide details on the nature or origin of the breach, cybersecurity experts have pointed to the growing threat landscape facing telecom operators in Africa, driven by rapid digital adoption and a vast user base. A source within MTN confirmed that Nigerian operations were unaffected, reinforcing confidence in the integrity of the local network.

The attack comes as Nigeria continues to advance its digital transformation agenda, a shift that places increasing cybersecurity demands on service providers. MTN said it is working closely with cybersecurity experts and authorities to investigate the incident and strengthen its defense systems against future threats.

Transgender inmate sues President Trump

0

A transgender prisoner who murdered a baby is suing US President Donald Trump for alleged s£xual ass@ults caused by his ‘transphobic and extremist rhetoric’.

Autumn Cordellionè, who was born Jonathan C. Richardson, claimed in a new complaint that the president has emboldened her fellow prisoners to assault her, after she took hormones to become a trans woman while in jail.

Cordellionè, who uses she/her pronouns, said in her handwritten complaint that she has been ass@ulted and r@ped multiple times while inside Westville Correctional Facility (WCA) in Indiana.

The inmate is currently serving 55 years behind bars after strangling her stepdaughter to de@th in 2001.

Cordellionè had expressed that she wanted to transition genders in 2020.

The trans woman said they started after being transferred to the facility from New Castle Correctional Facility (NCN) where she was kept in ‘protective custody’.

After being transferred to WCA, an all-male prison, other inmates and prisons employees allegedly stabbed her and sexually assaulted her.

In her complaint, she said that one of the offenders said: ‘Trump’s president now, and we won’t even get in trouble for f you trannies up.

‘We’re patriots and even if you tell on us, Trump will pardon us and probably give us a medal.’

She is seeking $3.5 million in damages from the president, alleging that two members also said similar things during the alleged assaults.

Cordellionè said in her complaint that she was warned that if she ‘snitched’ on her alleged attackers they would know as the ‘staff are on their payroll’.

When she tried to report the attacks she claimed she was told by the unit team manager that: ‘I’ve seen your case on the news, and I personally don’t think us tax payers should have to pay for your surgery.

‘God doesn’t approve of transgenders and gays, so what do you expect to happen when you dress like a woman and have t*** in a male facility.’

Cordellionè was convicted of killing her 11-month-old stepdaughter by strangling her to death in September 2001.

Cordellionè was in charge of his stepdaughter while the victim’s mom was away for the day.

The killer initially told police that she found the victim in a crib and she had vomit coming from her mouth.

Cordellionè later admitted she was fussy and she had tried to calm her down. It was determined the little girl died from manual strangulation.

While behind bars, Cordellionè told a correctional officer, ‘well all I know is I killed the little f*king btch.’ In 2002, Cordellionè was sentenced to 55 years in prison.

A White House spokesperson said: ‘President Trump has vowed to defend biological women from gender ideology extremism and restore biological truth to the Federal government.’

China has condemned US deep-sea mining plan ‘violates international law’

0

China has condemned a new executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump that accelerates the approval process for deep-sea mining permits, calling the move a violation of international law and a threat to global interests.

“The U.S. authorisation… violates international law and harms the overall interests of the international community,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun during a press briefing on Friday. The statement followed Trump’s Thursday directive aimed at expediting the issuance of licenses for seabed mineral exploration and commercial recovery, both within U.S. waters and in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

The order tasks federal agencies with fast-tracking the review and approval of seabed mining projects and explicitly calls for the United States to become a global leader in deep-sea resource extraction, positioning the move as a strategic counter to what the administration described as China’s “growing influence” over seabed mineral reserves.

The deep ocean floor is rich in valuable minerals and rare earth metals, sparking growing interest from both private companies and national governments. However, large-scale commercial exploitation has remained limited due to regulatory uncertainty. Since the 1990s, the United Nations-affiliated International Seabed Authority (ISA) has been developing a legal framework for deep-sea mining in international waters, but the United States is not a party to the treaty that created the ISA and does not recognize its jurisdiction.

Beijing, which has so far refrained from initiating deep-sea mining operations while awaiting the ISA’s regulatory framework, criticised the Trump administration’s unilateral move. “These orders once again expose the unilateral approach and hegemonic nature of the United States,” Guo added.

The executive order is part of a broader set of policies under Trump’s second term that seeks to assert American dominance in critical resource sectors, often in direct opposition to multilateral consensus and international governance structures.

“Last time I smoked with Snoop Dogg I lost my ability to see” – Singer Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran has just shared a hilarious but shocking moment with none other than the OG himself, legendary rapper, Snoop Dogg.

The British singer took to TikTok, posting a video of himself hanging out with the rapper, who was casually rolling one. The caption? “Last time I smoked with Snoop I lost my ability to see

Yep. Temporarily blind. That’s how strong Snoop’s stash was.

This isn’t Ed’s first run-in with legendary smokers either. He once admitted that Burna Boy is one of the “heaviest” smokers he’s ever met in the studio.

Let’s not forget — Snoop once told fans he was quitting smoking… only to later reveal he was talking about firewood stoves, not weed.

Judge blocks Trump’s order for election reform

A United States federal judge has partially blocked an executive order signed by President Donald Trump aimed at imposing sweeping election reforms, marking another legal hurdle for the Trump administration’s agenda.

Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly on Thursday issued a preliminary injunction halting the enforcement of a key provision in the order that would have required voters to present proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote at the state level. The executive order, signed in late March, targeted mail-in voting procedures and threatened to withhold federal funding from states that failed to comply.

In her 120-page ruling, Kollar-Kotelly wrote that the plaintiffs — including the Democratic Party — are “substantially likely to prevail” on the merits of the case. “Our Constitution entrusts Congress and the States — not the President — with the authority to regulate federal elections,” she stated.

However, the judge did not block another portion of the executive order mandating that states impose a deadline for receiving mail-in ballots to coincide with the closing of polls on Election Day.

While U.S. citizenship is a requirement to vote in federal elections, most states allow for various methods of verification and do not universally require voters to provide documentation proving their status. Critics of the executive order have argued that it represents a federal overreach and risks disenfranchising voters.

Legal scholars, including UCLA law professor Richard Hasen, have criticised the measure as an “executive power grab,” warning that it could impact millions of voters and undermine the decentralized nature of the U.S. electoral system. In a blog post, Hasen described the order as “dangerous,” particularly in light of Trump’s continued claims of election fraud following his loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election — claims that have been widely discredited.

Since returning to the presidency on January 20, Trump has issued numerous executive orders, many of which have faced immediate legal opposition. On the same day as Kollar-Kotelly’s ruling, another federal judge blocked a separate Trump directive attempting to cut federal funds to “sanctuary cities” that offer protections to undocumented immigrants.

Donald Trump will not get a front-row seat at Pope Francis’ funeral according to the Vatican protocol

0

US President, Donald Trump will not get a front-row seat at Pope Francis’ funeral, according to the Vatican protocol.

Top world leaders will set foot in Rome on Saturday to join tens of thousands of Catholic mourners at the Pontiff’s carefully orchestrated funeral.

Despite being one of the first heads of state to confirm his attendance at the historic memorial, Trump is expected to be moved to the third-tire row of dignitaries.

Foreign dignitaries will be seated in a block to one side of Francis’ coffin while archbishops, bishops, patriarchs, and cardinals will be seated opposite them. However, Vatican protocol suggests that when Trump arrives at St Peter’s Basilica on Saturday morning he might not even be placed in the second row.

Delegations from around 130 countries, including 50 heads of state and 10 reigning monarchs are making their way to Rome for the Pope’s funeral following his death on Monday.

“However, a good time for our president to get to know the leaders of certain Third World countries.” Trump claimed the situation would have been different if he were president, adding: “If I were president, they wouldn’t have sat me back there – and our Country would be much different than it is right now.:”

He concluded: “In real estate, like in politics and in life, location is everything.” The Pope’s funeral will mark the biggest gathering of world leaders since Trump’s January inauguration.

The seating arrangements could create diplomatic awkwardness, Catherine Pepinster, a former editor of The Tablet and a commentator on the Catholic Church told The Telegraph.

She explained: “One of the interesting aspects of a ceremony such as this is that the Holy See has diplomatic relations with countries such as Russia and Iran, which may mean that world leaders who would not usually meet, would encounter one another in Rome, either the night before the funeral or at the actual ceremony.”

Football legend Luis Figo has reportedly left his family home and is living apart from his wife’

0

Football legend, Luis Figo has reportedly left his family home and moved into a rental property, and is living a ‘separate life’ from his wife Helene Svedin.

This comes after he attended the Laureus Awards in Spain earlier this week, where he named the ‘best’ things in his life, in which he named his daughters Daniela, Martina, and Stella, but not his wife.

Over the years, he has attended the award ceremony in the company of Svedin, but this year he was pictured leaving his new residence alone in Madrid.

It is thought that the former Real Madrid and Barcelona star has lived there for around a month now, according to El Confidencial.

Spanish outlet Vanitatis has reported that both Figo and his wife Svedin are now ‘leading separate lives’. There is however no official confirmation of a separation between the two.

Spanish publication Marca adds that Figo had already left his family home on a short-term basis for two weeks three years ago.

The Portuguese legend is thought to have stayed at the Wellington Hotel, owned by a friend, before returning to his family home in Salamanca, Madrid.

Marca adds that Figo had been linked to model Claudia Bavel, who previously claimed to have had a relationship with his former team-mate Iker Casillas.

Figo, Bavel, Casillas and fellow Real Madrid star Michel Salgado in fact attended a winery together, though the former has categorically denied any reports of a relationship, describing such claims as ‘garbage’ and threatening legal action for defamation, according to Marca.

Svedin, meanwhile, has been in Mallorca, according to her Instagram, rather than at the Laureus awards with her husband.

Figo and Svedin have been together since 1996, after meeting at a dinner party during his first year at Barcelona.

The couple dated for five years before tying the knot, two years after the birth of their eldest daughter, Daniela.

Svedin has been competing in dressage for a number of years, and reportedly trains non-stop with her horse, Raio.

Figo is regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation, featuring for Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter, and won the Ballon d’Or in 2000.

Namibia to Offer Free University and College Education from 2026

Namibia to Offer Free University and College Education from 2026

Namibia is taking a bold step toward accessible education. Starting in 2026, students at public universities and technical colleges will no longer have to pay tuition or registration fees.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the country’s newly elected and first-ever female head of state, made the announcement during her State of the Nation Address on Thursday.

“I am pleased to announce that from the next academic year, commencing 2026, tertiary education will become 100% subsidised by the government,” she said.

This move comes as a major win for young Namibians. While the government already offers free primary and high school education, families still cover other costs like uniforms, books, and hostel fees. The new policy will now extend financial relief to higher education, too.

“We have heard your cries,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.

Namibia faces serious challenges with youth unemployment and poverty. With over two million people under the age of 35 in a population of just 3 million, the government hopes this investment in education will help open doors and create opportunities.

The plan will cover all seven of the country’s government-run vocational training centres, as well as its two public universities.

Godongwana won’t resign despite VAT u-turn and political pressure

Godongwana won’t resign despite VAT u-turn and political pressure

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has rejected calls to resign following the government’s dramatic reversal of a planned 0.5% increase in Value Added Tax (VAT), initially slated to take effect on May 1.

The about-face, confirmed on April 24, came in the wake of mounting political backlash and legal threats from within the ruling coalition and opposition parties. The Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) led the charge, arguing the VAT hike would hit low- and middle-income households hardest during a period of economic strain.

“My job is to introduce money bills, nothing says they must be popular,” Godongwana said, defending his position and emphasizing his constitutional mandate to propose necessary fiscal measures, even when unpopular.

Despite fierce criticism from the EFF who labeled Godongwana’s handling of the budget a “threat to South Africa’s economy” he retains the backing of the ANC, and there is currently no sign of an impending Cabinet reshuffle.

Analysts warn the reversal may undermine confidence in the government’s fiscal discipline, complicating future efforts to implement tax reforms and narrowing the space for policy manoeuvring ahead of national elections.

Zelenskyy asks Ramaphosa to help return Ukrainian children allegedly abducted by Russia

Zelenskyy asks Ramaphosa to help return Ukrainian children allegedly abducted by Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to assist in securing the return of thousands of Ukrainian children allegedly abducted by Russia during its ongoing war in Ukraine.

During a high-level visit to South Africa the first by a Ukrainian head of state to South Africa, Zelensky handed over a list of 400 missing children, part of what Kyiv describes as a broader campaign of forced deportations from Russian-occupied territories. According to Ukrainian authorities, over 19,500 children have been taken to Russia, Belarus, or other Russian-held regions, with only 1,284 recovered to date.

“I really hope President Ramaphosa will help us bring them back,” Zelensky said at a joint press briefing, urging his counterpart to support the international coalition working to reunite these children with their families. He added that many of those still in captivity face harsh and inhumane conditions.

Although South Africa has not formally joined the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, the country has engaged in behind-the-scenes diplomacy. South Africa has reportedly participated in indirect negotiations involving Qatar and the Vatican, both of which have been instrumental in past mediation efforts.

Zelensky’s visit was unexpectedly cut short following news of a large-scale Russian missile barrage targeting Kyiv, prompting his immediate return to Ukraine.

Thousands gather for historic funeral of Pope Francis

Thousands gather for historic funeral of Pope Francis

St. Peter’s Square is filled with more than 200,000 mourners today as the world bids farewell to Pope Francis. Known as “The People’s Pope,” the late pontiff is remembered for his humility, compassion, and tireless advocacy for the poor and marginalized.

The funeral service, led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, reflects Pope Francis’ own wishes for simplicity. Gone are the grand rituals of past papal funerals, replaced by a modest ceremony that mirrors the values he upheld throughout his papacy.

In a historic break from tradition, Pope Francis is set to be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore just outside the Vatican walls. He becomes the first pope to be buried there since the 1600s and the first in more than a century to be laid to rest outside Vatican grounds.

World leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Prince William attend the service, joining clergy and laypeople from across the globe. Many speak of a pope who transformed the Church with his openness, warmth, and fearless leadership on issues like climate change, economic inequality, and human rights.

As the Church enters a nine-day period of mourning, preparations begin for the upcoming conclave, expected to convene in early May to elect a successor. Pope Francis’ legacy as a bridge-builder, reformer, and servant of the people continues to resonate far beyond the Vatican walls.

KAMANGA DEMYSTIFIES CLAIMS THAT FAZ JOB IS FULL TIME

…as he targets completing job in final term

Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Andrew Kamanga has reaffirmed his commitment to driving transformation within Zambian football, citing key reforms, decentralisation efforts and strategic successes as pillars of his leadership.

Speaking on the popular Kenny T One on One Podcast, Kamanga reflected on a tenure defined by system-building and future-focused governance, setting the tone as he seeks re-election at the FAZ elective Annual General Meeting on May 9, 2025 in Kabwe.

“It’s been an exciting journey,” Kamanga said.

“Football has its challenges, but as president, I have always understood my role which is to provide vision, strategic oversight and ensure execution is carried out by the secretariat, led by the General Secretary as CEO (because) my role is non-executive.”

Kamanga explained that his leadership style had prioritized institutional integrity and sustainability, distancing himself from operational control and focusing on reform-driven leadership.

He noted that the first change under his administration was constitutional reform aimed at revamping the electoral structure and introducing provincial football governance.

“Today, football is run across all 10 provinces. We empowered the provincial structures to manage their own AGMs. That decentralisation has been a game-changer; it has helped ensure that FAZ is truly national in nature, and not just centrally driven.”

On the pitch, Kamanga pointed to a clear blueprint: rebuilding from the grassroots.

“Between 2016 and 2021, we invested in grassroots football, supported clubs with equipment and grants. Super League clubs moved from K200,000 to over K1 million in minimum support,” the FAZ boss said.

Despite early struggles with the senior national team including missing three consecutive AFCONs, Kamanga shared Chipolopolo’s comeback to the biggest continental showcase,  the U20 Africa Cup victory in 2017, the FIFA U20 World Cup quarterfinal milestone, and a dominant women’s football trajectory culminating in Zambia’s first-ever Women’s World Cup appearance in 2023.

“We have now qualified for two straight AFCONs with the men’s team. All our national teams have qualified for CAF tournaments, and the U17 girls could qualify for the World Cup again this weekend,” Kamanga said, referencing the Copper Princesses’ crucial second leg against Benin in Togo on Saturday.

He described his first term (2016–2021) as a foundation-building phase, and the second term (2021–2025) as “taking the structure up to roof level.”

He now calls on FAZ councillors to complete the structure by supporting a vision for a financially independent, tournament-winning FAZ.

Kamanga also addressed misconceptions surrounding his position.

“Many think the FAZ presidency is a full-time job. It’s not. The secretariat runs day-to-day operations. Our job is strategic, just like a board chair in a company.”

As part of his continued contribution to football and governance, Kamanga revealed plans for an upcoming book focused on the intersection of football and business as a reflection of his experience and passion for building football systems that endure beyond personalities.

The President is not legally obligated to declare assets-Musa Mwenye

Former Anti-Corruption Commission Chairperson MUSA MWENYE says the President is not legally obligated to declare assets.

Mr MWENYE says the current legislation does not require the sitting President to disclose personal assets.

He  said this during his presentation of “Asset Declaration in Zambia: A Tool for Prudent Financial Management,” at the 2025 Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) annual conference.

Mr. MWENYE also clarified that under existing laws, a President is neither obligated to declare assets nor to undergo a lifestyle audit while in office.

He said according to him, the only requirement to declare assets arises at the nomination stage before elections.

Mr. MWENYE  stressed that implementing clear legal guidelines would strengthen accountability and promote transparency in public service, furthering the fight against corruption.

Mining Exploitation and Energy Failure Threaten Zambia’s Future

Mining Exploitation and Energy Failure Threaten Zambia’s Future

Zambia’s energy sector is spiraling into collapse, and at the core of this crisis is an unchecked mining industry that bleeds the nation dry while leaving its citizens in darkness. The country, once hailed as a rising copper powerhouse, now faces chronic power shortages and environmental destruction all sacrificed at the altar of mineral exploitation.

As ordinary Zambians endure daily blackouts, the mining industry enjoys uninterrupted electricity to sustain its operations. Over 50% of Zambia’s electricity is consumed by mining companies, yet these same corporations contribute less than 6% to the national tax base.

This lopsided energy arrangement exposes the government’s blatant prioritization of foreign profit over national welfare.
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/162Z8dD3iU/

Hydropower, which supplies 85% of Zambia’s electricity, is no longer sustainable. Prolonged droughts linked to climate change, compounded by overuse by mining operations, have drained key reservoirs like Lake Kariba.

Despite this, the government continues to neglect renewable energy investments, leaving the country vulnerable to deeper blackouts and economic stagnation.

The mining sector has not only drained energy resources but poisoned the land and water in its wake. The 2025 toxic spill in the Kafue River, caused by reckless mining waste disposal, dumped over 50 million liters of sludge into one of Zambia’s key water sources. Crops failed, fish died, and thousands were exposed to contaminated water,  yet no meaningful accountability followed.

Towns like Kabwe remain environmental crime scenes. Once a mining hub, Kabwe now ranks among the most polluted places on earth, with generations of children suffering irreversible lead poisoning. The legacy of mining in Zambia is not development it’s disease, displacement, and death.

Government complicity is evident in its refusal to regulate or confront powerful mining conglomerates. Secret mining agreements, royalty holidays, and political donations have created an unholy alliance between public officials and foreign investors. Meanwhile, Zambia’s environmental laws are poorly enforced and regularly bypassed through corruption and weak governance.

Energy reform has become nothing more than donor rhetoric. While international partners call for investment in solar, wind, and decentralized energy systems, Zambia remains trapped in outdated hydropower dependency and continues subsidizing electricity for mining companies. Citizens are told to “conserve power,” while mining giants receive uninterrupted supply.

The Environmental Protection Fund, designed to hold mining companies accountable for ecological damage, remains largely dormant  underfunded, unmonitored, and ineffective. When disasters occur, as with the Kafue River spill, the public pays the price while corporations walk away untouched. The state has effectively surrendered its power to regulate.

Without urgent reforms, Zambia is on a collision course with environmental and economic ruin. The country must end the parasitic relationship with extractive industries that enrich a few while impoverishing the many. Investment in clean energy, enforcement of environmental laws, and transparency in mining agreements are not optional they are survival.

As Solomon Mwampikita of the Centre for Trade Policy and Development warns, “If Zambia fails to break free from the grip of mining and energy injustice, we will inherit nothing but contaminated rivers, infertile lands, and a broken nation.” The choice is clear: act now or perish in silence.

POLICY ANALYST WARNS WEAK FISCAL OVERSIGHT COULD DERAIL ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC GROWTH GOALS

POLICY ANALYST WARNS WEAK FISCAL OVERSIGHT COULD DERAIL ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC GROWTH GOALS

A Policy Analyst Dr. Kelvin Chibomba has cautioned that Zambia may struggle to meet its economic growth projections without the implementation of strict fiscal discipline measures.

Dr. Chibomba warns that unchecked administrative spending and poor oversight, both threaten to erode the progress made through ongoing debt restructuring efforts, re-enforcing concerns raised on Wednesday by the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants-ZICA around the impact of Zambia’s debt restructuring.

ZICA highlighted that the overall impact of the positive steps in public debt renegotiation remains minimal, citing rising administrative expenditures, such as those flagged in the auditor general’s report on the Constituency Development Fund-CDF, as potential deterrents to investor confidence and sustainable growth.

Dr. Chibomba has urged the government to reinforce transparency and accountability by strengthening monitoring systems, through rigorous project selections, real-time expenditure tracking, and regular performance audits to prevent resource leakages and ensure tangible development outcomes.

He has further stressed that local revenue generation, critical to economic stability, must be rooted in credible fiscal management, value addition and private sector development, contending that national goals can only be achieved through clear reporting standards and robust enforcement mechanisms.

YOUR SURROGATES DIRECTLY REPRESENTS WHO YOU’RE! HOW THE POST’S RECKLESS CAMPAIGN COST MAGANDE A CHANCE TO RULE ZAMBIA

YOUR SURROGATES DIRECTLY REPRESENTS WHO YOU’RE! HOW THE POST’S RECKLESS CAMPAIGN COST MAGANDE A CHANCE TO RULE ZAMBIA

Late Ng’andu Peter Magande is probably Zambia’s best finance minister ever. Magande oversaw Zambia’s biggest economic transformation post – independence. Hon Magande is a president that Zambia never had!

But what happened?

Following the sudden death of former President Levy Mwanawasa in August of 2008, Magande emerged as one of the frontrunners in the succession battle, after all, he was seen as that pivotal point for Zambia’s economic transformation under Mwanawa.

Magande’s main rival was then vice-president Rupiah Banda, who only two years before 2008, was safely at his farm in Chipata, licking his wounds having retired from active politics as one of the most visible UNIPISTs.

Rupiah Banda was largely seen as an accidental vice president after Mwanawasa got upset with the Bemba of Lukashya constituency for rejecting Lupando Mwape who at the time was one the staunchest Mwanawasa loyalists, and often excessively so!

Although it was the first time the MMD party was electing a president outside the traditional national conventions, the succession battle was not expected to be so vicious given that it was a contest between ‘brothers.’

However, the world forgot about the other ‘stakeholders’ outside the National Executive Committee of the MMD – The mighty Post Newspapers!

Having established a culture of cosy personal ties with late Mwanawasa, The Post’s professional lines became so blurred that it felt entitled in participating in choosing Mwanawasa’s successor! The newspaper, using its influence at the time, decided that Magande was the anointed heir to the throne (total insanity!)

In a pursuit of its selfish interests which were largely commercially driven, The Post launched a vicious campaign to stop RB from challenging Magande for the MMD presidency. When it became clear RB was unyielding, The Post launched one of the most vitriolic personal attacks against RB’s candidature. Some of the editorial comments were utterly insultious, and whoever stood in the way of the newspaper’s unprofessional conduct was annihilated, pulverized to pulp.

The old man was subjected to all manner of abuse including being body-shamed! It was a very unfortunate period for journalism. A highly derogatory moniker, “nyama soya,” was coined by the newspaper in it an attempt for desecrate RB’s character. The man was even insulted for his choice of wife even when the newspaper very well the old man was a widower!

Magande was consummate professional, all-embracing, non-tribal, a highly decent man – he was an embodiment of a true gentleman. But he was politically naïve.

Despite being a decent man who enjoyed the support and love of his fellow cabinet ministers, Magande failed to rein in the senseless and rapid excesses of his backers, The Post.

We knew Mr Magande was not one who could lacerate a competitor’s character; Magande was not one who could disrespect another person’s family, later on, his wife, but he missed one key life’s lesson; he failed to stop The Post’s toxic approach towards his campaign.

Without his realisation, Magande was being viewed as a ‘project’ of The Post. And as expectedly, the MMD shareholders – the NEC inevitably started considering the newspaper’s uncouth campaigns against RB as the work of Magande, or at the very least, had his full blessings.

As campaign surrogates, The Post represented Hon Magande and all his hopes and dreams were shuttered by the newspaper’s misplaced and uncouth campaign tactics.

Despite some of the attacks resonating well with some of the readers of The Post, Magande’s rating among his cabinet colleagues plummeted and was humiliated on the election day, effectively extinguishing what seemed to be a rising decent political life. The will of the real owners of the MMD – the National Executive Committee eventually carried the day .

The format could have evolved over the years but the pitch has stayed the same.

Today, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is in an election mood and the top three contestants are without doubt brothers. In fact, after having evaluated their campaign manifestos, we have failed to see anything that fundamentally distinguishes Mr Adrian Kashala’s promises from what incumbent Mr Andrew Kamanga is doing. As general secretary, Mr Kashala was always seen as Mr Kamanga’s strongman.

We have equally failed to discern anything that fundamentally distinguishes Mr Keith Mweemba’s campaign promises from what Mr Kashala is offering or what Mr Kamanga is doing in the office. But we’re just counsellors and lovers of the beautiful game.

In a country that has adequately failed to deal with consistent high poverty levels and lack of opportunities, any semblance of a power battle at any level becomes a currency for the many desperate souls. Today, we have all manner of insults and character assassinations being orchestrated by individuals extremely peripheral to the determination of the next President.

We know desperation can inspire people to do the unimaginable like an SDA member attempting to influence the election of the next Pope!

An impression is being painted that the contest for the FAZ boss is more ferocious than the war between Sudanese chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his nemesis Hemedti of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. We don’t hold that view.

The battle appears hotter among the opportunistic supporters than the candidates themselves. Today, some supporters appear assets, but the Magande-The Post failed relationship of convenience provides some strong lessons from history.

We leave it for now but as history has shown, ultimately, the shareholders will determine their next FAZ president devoid of external influence, real or perceived.

Look out for part II as we wonder what will remain of football journalism after 9 May. Enjoy your Friday mates!- The Vital

DEFEATING HICHILEMA IS A MUST – Fred M’membe

DEFEATING HICHILEMA IS A MUST

It is clear that Mr Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND are well aware that a heavy electoral defeat awaits them next year.

They know that it’s only a matter of time before they are out of power. This is why they are desperate in their attempts to destroy the unity that is being built among the opposition political parties.

Mr Hichilema and his league are determined to create an illusionary narrative that the opposition political parties of this country can never work together. They are cheating themselves that they cannot be defeated in the elections next year. Let them believe their own lies, they’ll be shocked!

But we would like to remind them that the opposition political parties of this country, anchor their hope for victory in the millions of frustrated and disappointed masses. This is what will help them attain victory and deliver a unified, visionary, democratic and inclusive governance system. We shall seek unity with all progressive forces until Mr Hichilema leaves office.

Luckily for us, as opposition political parties, our people know and understand the usefulness of their votes. They clearly know the practicality, importance and transformation that a vote brings to their societies. So, for Mr Hichilema to think that they will manipulate their way to victory like they did last time is nothing but being delusional.

Let Mr Hichilema and his league know that no matter how hard they try to alter the narrative on the ground, and heighten propaganda activities against the opposition in an effort to support his re-election bid, it’s too late. Nabaya kale aba!

No amount of misinformation, disruptive, brutal and malicious political antics will rescue them. The people are awake and in due course, the people shall triumph.

Fred M’membe
President of the Socialist Party

Given Lubinda is Acting President  of PF on my behalf and he will lead Tonse Alliance- Edgar Lungu

PAUL MOONGA RETURNS TO UPND, PRAISES PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S FREE EDUCATION AND CDF INITIATIVES

ROUTE RECALCULATED – PAUL MOONGA RETURNS TO UPND

……….Cites HH’s Progressive Policies
After what seems like a scenic tour through Zambia’s major political parties, Former Patriotic Front (PF) and Socialist Party (SP) Central Committee Member, Paul Moonga, has rejoined the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), marking yet another shift in his political journey.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka on Friday, Moonga said he decided to return to UPND because of President Hakainde Hichilema’s impressive policies, including free education and the increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

“I have made this decision because I believe in President Hichilema’s vision for Zambia. Initiatives like free education and the CDF increment are making a real impact on the ground,” he said.

Moonga’s political map has seen several recalculations: once a staunch UPND member, he abandoned the party in April 2015 to join the then-ruling PF. After PF lost power in 2021, he shifted allegiance to the Socialist Party. Now, in 2025, he’s circled back to UPND, calling it “home.”

“There is too much bickering and witch-hunting in the opposition. I am not part of that which is why I am here today,” he added.
He also revealed that he left the Socialist Party due to its lack of inclusiveness and internal structure.

With this latest move, Moonga reaffirms his status as one of Zambia’s most consistent political turncoats, Consistently inconsistent.

Meanwhile, Socialist Party leader Dr. Fred M’membe posted “We wish Mr Paul Moonga, who has rejoined the UPND, well in his political future”.
We thank him for the period he spent with us.

RESPECT LUBINDA SAYS ECL AS HE FIRES ZUMANI ZIMBA, removes him as a Consultant for Tonse Alliance and as co-administrator of his official Facebook page

RESPECT LUBINDA SAYS ECL AS HE FIRES ZUMANI ZIMBA

Friday 25th April 2026

..ECL cracks whip, removes Zumani Zimba as a Consultant for Tonse Alliance and as co-administrator of his official Facebook page…

Former President Edgar Lungu, who is also Tonse Alliance Leader has cracked the whip to forestall discipline in the party and to halt divisions emerging in the alliance partner, Tonse Alliance where the PF is a anchor party.

President Lungu has emphasised that he appointed PF Vice President,  Hon. Given Lubinda as Acting President of the Patriotic Front, to guide during the period of his absence.

He has also emphasised that by extension, Hon. Lubinda will act as Tonse Alliance leader in his absence.

This is in light of seemingly acts of indiscipline associated with scandalisation of senior leaders of the Patriotic Front Acting President,  Hon. Given Lubinda and Secretary General, Raphael Nakacinda.

[quads id=15]

The former President has also halted all disciplinary processes and action commenced after a leaked audio disparaging him and the Alliance from juniors members of a third party.

The disciplinary process was initiated by Tonse Alliance Spokesperson and PeP President, Mr. Sean Tembo without his knowledge or consent.

President Lungu has called for unity in the PF and called for an urgent sense of purpose with its alliance partners.

He has reminded all leaders at every level to focus on the immediate agenda of strengthening mechanisms to wrestle power from the UPND to set Zambia on the path of sustainable development.

He has also called for an Extraordinary Central Committee Meeting scheduled for Saturday that will be co-chaired by himself by remote conferencing and by Acting President Hon.Given Lubinda.

Airport Corporation fires employee who cleared Lungu’s departure without security check

A former Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) manager has sued the corporation, seeking damages for unfair dismissal following an incident in which former president Edgar Lungu was cleared at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) without undergoing full security screening.

Paul Kasonde, who held the position of Manager for Aviation Security (AVSEC), is also claiming damages for mental distress.

Mr Kasonde states that he was employed by the Zambia Airports Corporation as Manager AVSEC until his dismissal on February 10, 2025, after serving one year of a three-year renewable contract.

He submits that his efforts to appeal against the dismissal were unsuccessful, as the verdict was upheld.

According to Mr Kasonde, the events leading to his dismissal occurred on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at KKIA, when a security breach was allegedly recorded after Mr Lungu was cleared without passing through an Arch-Way Metal Detector by the security screening staff.

Following the incident, Mr Kasonde was charged and subsequently dismissed for failing to report irregularities or malpractice by a member of staff or customer to higher authorities.

[quads id=15]

He contends that, at the time of the incident, the procedures in place exempted the former president from airport security screening.

“As such, the fact that the former president did not pass through the Arch-Way Metal Detector did not constitute a security breach warranting formal reporting, as the VIP Facilitation Procedure in force exempted him from such screening,” he adds.

Mr Kasonde further submits that Mr Lungu had previously been facilitated through the same airport multiple times without undergoing security screening, and the corporation had never questioned or reprimanded him for it.

“Therefore, there was no evidence to support the charge or justify the dismissal, as no irregularities or malpractice occurred at the material time,” the plaintiff argues.

He adds that the VIP facilitation in question was carried out in coordination with security personnel from other state institutions—namely MrTrinity Mubambe, Officer-in-Charge of KKIA Protocol under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC), and Mr Mashala, Officer-in-Charge of KKIA Zambia Police Protocol—against whom no disciplinary action was taken by their respective superiors.

“This confirms that, unlike the Zambia Airports Corporation, the other state institutions involved in the VIP facilitation did not interpret the incident as a security breach, given the former president’s formal exemption from airport screening.

“Furthermore, other airport management staff were present and/or involved in the facilitation, yet no disciplinary action was taken against them. Therefore, the plaintiff’s dismissal was unfortunate.”

Mr Kasonde laments that he was unfairly and wrongfully dismissed.

“The plaintiff is at the prime of his career and belongs to a highly specialized profession in aviation security management, which has now been prematurely cut short.

“Due to the limited employment opportunities in the aviation and airports sector, the plaintiff has unjustly been plunged into destitution.”

He is now demanding payment of damages for unfair and/or wrongful dismissal, damages for mental and emotional trauma, and payment of all outstanding salaries and allowances.

Edgar Lungu begged me to join Tonse – Kalaba

Lungu begged me to join Tonse – Kalaba

CITIZENS First leader Harry Kalaba has shared that former President Edgar Lungu once turned to late FDD leader Edith Nawakwi to help him convince Kalaba into joining the Tonse Alliance some time back.

This came to light after the Citizens First party dumped the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) on Wednesday.

Kalaba, who was being asked whether his leaving UKA had to do with him wanting to join the Tonse Alliance stated that his departure had nothing to do with Lungu’s alliance but had everything to do with the growth of his party.

He said he was not sure if his party would join the Tonse Alliance as the party had been asked to join by Lungu even before they left UKA.

The opposition leader said he could not join Tonse at the time because UKA could not allow him to join another alliance.

However, Kalaba added that following his departure from UKA, now the ball is in his party’s central committee.

[quads id=15]

He said the reason the party had to leave UKA was because it wanted to focus on engaging more freely with other opposition political parties and Zambians which would help build the party.

“President Lungu once told president Nawakwi that talk to your brother I really want to work with him. I refused because I was with UKA.”

“And after we left UKA president Sean Tembo came to me to say president Lungu wanted to work with me through Tonse so I told president Sean Tembo to put the request in writing because it is not me to decide but the central committee,” he said.

Kalaba said he wants to focus on building the Citizens First party and be free in dealing with other political parties.

“Nothing should stop us from sitting down with PeP, nothing should stop us from sitting with president and our many other political leaders. This has freed us we now because we can work with all alliances that are existing in this country,” he added.

He added that his party would work with the Tonse Alliance but it remained reluctant on joining the alliance.

“I’m not sure if we will join Tonse. Our reason for coming out of the alliance is because we wanted to reorganise ourselves as a political party. We can still work with Tonse without us really joining them,” he said.

REMINDING SOMEONE OF THEIR LIES CANNOT BE A CRIME – EDWIN LIFWEKELO

REMINDING SOMEONE OF THEIR LIES CANNOT BE A CRIME

The UPND government must not be allergic to criticism but must be able to introspect and listen to different views  when it comes to governance matters.

Since Zambians have chosen democracy as a form of government, they must be ready to appreciate and demonstrate democratic tenets.

So far the route taken by the UPND government to devote their precious time playing blame games against the opposition PF is retrogressive and a sheer waste of time.

What is certain is that the UPND government has been in office for almost four years now and things on the ground still look uncertain as the promised good life for Zambians remain far fetched.

Apart from the rumours of zambia being the best performing economy in Africa which has no effect on the citizens, there is nothing which the New dawn administration can point a finger at that has elevated lives of Zambians.

We only hear of the chaotic CDF programs, the so called free education which without doubt has compromised the quality of education and the so called Recruitment of Nurses and Teachers which was made possible because of the PF developmental programs that put in place, Hospitals, Clinics, Police Posts, Stations and Houses for both Army and Zambia Police Service

[quads id=15]

The massive infrastructure programs undertaken by the former regime made it possible for the UPND government to employ nurses and teachers.

Government has a responsibility to accommodate and tolerate divergent views instead of gagging citizens using draconian laws such as  Seditious Practices, Proceeds of crime and hate Speeches and now cyber laws.

The UPND government are dragging civilisation 20 years backwards and instead of promoting and accelerating development, they are now making it  hard for our citizens to be economically independent  making them more poorer and poorer.

Every democratically elected government needs a responsible and serious opposition to ensure they are held accountable to the people who elected them into office.

Democracy recognises and accomodates different opinions.

To ceaselessly heap blame on PF for whatever is going wrong in the nation is being irresponsible on the part of government.

It is only fair that government concentrates its efforts in addressing the high cost of living, high cost of doing business, high rentals, costly electricity and fuel, the list is endless.

Democracy without accountability is illusory because social contracts made through campaign promises are being ignored with impunity as the electorates remain languishing in poverty and squalor.

Government must stop being vindictive by persecuting opposition leaders who are critical of its leadership.

Government must instead strive to regain its lost confidence of the majority poverty stricken citizens who had hope and confidence in the failed new dawn administration.

People have now realized that they were better off under the PF administration.

We are all yearning to bring civility to our Politics in Zambia without  doubt but we recognize that poverty levels among the majority Zambians in our communities has escalated to unprecedented levels.

We are all now certain that UPND had no plan for Zambians to alleviate poverty and address the high cost of living for our people other than themselves.
This the reason they are coming up with all sorts of draconian laws and ambiguous electoral reforms to de- franchise and intimidate Zambians.

Let us remain resilient and focused, it gets dark before dawn and Power belongs to the people.

To our opposition leadership, we are a mighty force, we may differ and have different views, it’s normal but let’s practice politics of purpose what unites us far outweighs our differences.

There is no need for disunity now and to throw the Newly born baby into hot water. I think we can do much better.

SEAN TEMBO  DENOUNCES  LUBINDA’S APPOINTMENT,DESCRIBES IT AS FALSE

By: Sun FM TV Reporter

The opposition TONSE Alliance has refuted claims published in today’s Daily Nation alleging that Hon. Given Lubinda has been appointed Acting Chairman of the Alliance and that exculpatory letters issued to him and Hon. Raphael Nakachinda have been withdrawn.

In a media notice released by TONSE Alliance Spokesperson Sean Tembo, the Alliance dismissed the report as baseless and misleading, urging members and the public to treat the claims as deliberate falsehoods.

Meanwhile Mr Tembo has announced that the Alliance disciplinary committee is set to hold a press Briefing today at 11:00hrs.

I’m not a praise singer or mushanina bwali -Nevers Mumba

MMD leader Nevers Mumba says the notion that he is a praise singer or mushanina bwali just because he doesn’t criticise government in public was wrong.

Dr Mumba said people should not expect him to criticise or condemn the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema publicly when his party is in an alliance with the UPND.

He revealed that he actually differs with President Hichilema and his administration sometimes when they meet to discuss national matters in private.

“We differ in our alliance and when we leave that table and we face the camera, we are a united force. We don’t agree on anything, no but you can’t belong to an army which has a general who says something different from the other general and expect to win a war. You have to be wise to convince your partners,” said Dr Mumba on the Hot FM’s Hot Seat this morning.

“In UPND alliance we have problems amongst ourselves but we are mature enough to put it within ourselves. There’s no alliance that can survive without mutual respect.

He explained that some alliances were tearing apart because there is no mutual respect within their party.

[quads id=15]

“UKA died because they were together because of the hatred they had for President Hakainde Hichilema. One thing that people don’t know about hatred is that it propels your enemy to higher heights. Tonse is gone, Tonse is unredeemable. Some of us yes we are in politics but we are still preachers, I’m a pastor and I’m a Christian and the advice I give is honest,” he explained.

Dr Mumba added that the opposition have chosen to regard him as a punching bag simply because he is a pastor.

He said most people take advantage of his cleric role as they know that it is impossible for a clergy to respond to hate.

“We need to do politics with politicians who can think reason and unite this nation and the only way they can do that is through speech and behaviour towards others,” charged Dr Mumba…https://kalemba.news/politics/im-not-a-praise-singer-or-mushanina-bwali-nevers/

From Critic to Clarifier: The Evolution of Dr. Elias Munshya’s Stance on Zambia’s Cyber Laws

From Critic to Clarifier: The Evolution of Dr. Elias Munshya’s Stance on Zambia’s Cyber Laws
By George N Mtonga

In the evolving debate around Zambia’s cyber legislation, few voices have been as prominent—or as changed—as that of Dr. Elias Munshya. A respected legal mind and former Canada-based attorney, Dr. Munshya made waves in 2021 with a detailed critique of the Patriotic Front’s (PF) Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act. At the time, he expressed strong concern over the law’s vague language, expansive powers, and its potential to muzzle freedom of speech.

Fast-forward to 2025, and Dr. Munshya, now serving in diplomatic service as Zambia’s High Commissioner, has emerged as a defender of the revised cyber laws enacted by the UPND government. The laws, which include provisions that arguably go further than those of the 2021 Act, have been described by Munshya as a “clarification” and improvement of the previous framework. He now argues they provide necessary legal structure for Zambia’s evolving digital landscape.

This shift invites important reflection. What has changed between 2021 and 2025? Is it the law—or the lens through which it is viewed?

In 2021, Dr. Munshya’s caution was grounded in democratic concern. The law’s potential for abuse in the hands of a politically dominant regime was obvious to many legal scholars and activists. His legal analysis helped citizens understand what was at stake: a digital space vulnerable to censorship, surveillance, and selective enforcement.

[quads id=15]

Yet in 2025, under a new government—one he previously supported as a reformist ally—Dr. Munshya’s tone has softened. The same legal tools once criticized as overly intrusive are now endorsed as necessary instruments of governance. Though he urges citizens to read the law for themselves, the shift from critique to endorsement suggests a deeper recalibration—one that seems more political than legal.

It is neither cynical nor unpatriotic to raise this question: have the legal defects of the 2021 Act truly been corrected, or have they simply been normalized under a different political banner?

This change matters not because Dr. Munshya’s opinion alone sways policy—but because it reflects a broader trend where legal interpretation bends too easily to political convenience. Zambia’s democracy deserves consistency in principle, not selective silence when familiar faces hold the reins of power.

Dr. Munshya’s intellect is not in question. His patriotism is also clear. But when the same statute that once threatened freedoms is now recast as a progressive tool—without substantial redrafting or enhanced protections for civil liberties—it compels all of us to be more vigilant.

The task of democracy is not to defend power, but to challenge it—regardless of who wields it.

CHILUBA’S REBUTTAL TO MWANAWASA

CHILUBA’S REBUTTAL TO MWANAWASA

Chiluba held a different view. On July 28, 2002, he appeared on MNET’s Carte Blanche programme, complaining that Mwanawasa’s decision to prosecute him for corruption was the worst betrayal. He denied ever stealing government money. Chiluba was reacting to Mwanawasa’s statement in which he said should Chiluba return 75 percent of what he had stolen, he was ready to use his prerogative of mercy to pardon him. But Chiluba frowned upon this statement, vehemently denying that he had stolen anything.

In his own words:

His [Mwanawasa’s] turn-around is something I least expected. I only think it is a betrayal of my confidence. I can assure you that just as the sun rises from East and sets in the West, I did not steal anything. If they had dared and bothered to check thoroughly, they could have found that I did not steal anything. It is not being pardoned with malice that matters to me, it is justice that matters. President Mwanawasa should first let the State machinery go ahead and investigate me to prove whatever allegations levelled against me.
Let him investigate and then come and say, ‘You have been cleared on number 1, number 2, 3, 4, 5, 6…not cleared on number 7’, and then pardon. I am very certain and very, very sure that I was not involved in what the President has been talking about.”

Three days after Mwanawasa addressed the Special Session of Parliament, where he beseeched parliamentarians to lift Chiluba’s immunity so he could be prosecuted for corruption and theft, on July 13, 2002, Chiluba called for a press conference to respond to Mwanawasa’s allegations.
He said:

I am very scared that charges brought to seek removal of my immunity are an indicator of the slowly degenerating record of human rights observance. The revelations of corruption and plunder of national resources against me by President Mwanawasa are a mere figment of imagination and have no basis in fact or substance.

[quads id=15]

That is why I feel saddened that President Mwanawasa went to Parliament last Thursday with the express intention of inciting and inflaming the honourable members to remove my immunity. He presented to the House a travesty of charges to justify this very serious and onerous decision. I address you today because I feel aggrieved by the allegations levelled against me and the manner in which they have been handled. The President acted as prosecutor, jury and judge to determine that a prima- facie case has been established against me meriting the loss of my immunity without my being heard.

I am concerned that the inflammatory allegations of theft, corruption, carelessness and misuse of national resources have been deliberately fanned over some time to incense public opinion as to jeopardise any semblance of due process and the role of constitutional officers like the Director of Public Prosecutions and judiciary and Parliament.

Chiluba died believing that allegations of theft against him were made out of malice and in bad faith.

DP BACKS PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS

DP BACKS PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS

… AS JUDITH KABEMBA, DP PRESIDENT, APPEALS TO THE WELL-MEANING CITIZENS TO SUPPORT THE PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS.

Thursday, 24 April, 2025.

Democratic Party President, Judith Kabemba, has stated that Zambia has grown and developed, hence the need for certain Laws to be amended  tailored to meet the times and demands of citizens in order to develop and go forward. As noted by the Democratic Party, Ms Kabemba says the proposed constitutional amendments by the UPND administration have brought a lot of talk and this calls for curative measures by all interested stakeholders.

She says there is need for political stakeholders to put the people’s interest first for the development and health of the nation as she zeroed in on the provisions involving women, the marginalized and the vulnerable people. Ms Kabemba highlights that the constitution previously could not allow women to contest any electoral position, citing the first cabinet after the introduction of Multiparty Participatory in 1991. She notes that Zambia has undergone various constitutional amendments which led to significant changes since 1991 and these changes have impacted on the statutory bodies such as the Judiciary.

Ms Kabemba notes that today’s proposed constitutional amendments seek to enhance the representation of marginalized members of society, particularly the women, the youths and  people with disabilities in the National Assembly—hence the Democratic Party supports these proposals.

[quads id=15]

The DP President says for a long time now, women have been marginalized, yet they have immensely contributed to the development of the nation, and has since thanked the Republican President, Hakainde Hichilema and his government for the roadmap on constitutional amendments proposals. Ms Kabemba has implored the President to handle the constitutional amendments issue with a pure heart to enhance its purpose.

“And also the representation of women should be done with a pure heart, we know your intentions are good. However, Your Excellency, if you leave a particular Amendment open, it will defeat the purpose because another President will come up with a constitution which says people will be nominated by the President, and all they will do is nominate their friends”, she says.

Ms Kabemba has called on all women to arise and support one another and  defend themselves, noting that women have opportunities that are fronted before them and look at the big picture of supporting one another and begin to dresse issues affecting them.

M’MEMBE RALLIES CITIZENS FOR A JUST AND EQUITABLE ZAMBIA

M’MEMBE RALLIES CITIZENS FOR A JUST AND EQUITABLE ZAMBIA

Lusaka… Friday April 25, 2025 – Socialist Party (SP) President Dr. Fred M’membe has urged Zambians from all walks of life to unite and take a stand against growing economic challenges, political marginalization, and social inequality under the current government.

In a statement, Dr. M’membe said that the country was at a “critical juncture” and called out President Hakainde Hichilema and the ruling UPND for failing to fulfill their campaign promises.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/19114dYyBw/?mibextid=wwXIfr

He stated that under the UPND government, Zambians were grappling with rising living costs, increasing unemployment, and a shrinking democratic space.

He said the administration had failed to deliver both dignity and hope to ordinary citizens.

Dr. M’membe emphasized that the Socialist Party could not remain silent in the face of “injustice.”

[quads id=15]

He called for action, organization, and unity among various sectors of society, including opposition political parties, the church, traditional leaders, labor unions, student movements, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens.

He stressed that the goal was not merely political competition but a broader purpose — restoring justice and equity in Zambia.

He said the movement must speak for the voiceless and defend the oppressed.

Referring to the struggles of specific communities, Dr. M’membe mentioned the marketeer in Chisokone, the peasant farmer in Chama, the miner in Chililabombwe, and the youth in Kanyama as examples of those who had been left behind by a system that served the interests of a few.

He also criticized “empty rhetoric” and superficial praise from foreign quarters, insisting that real leadership should be measured by the material well-being of citizens — through affordable food, access to education, meaningful employment, and a responsive government.

Concluding his message, Dr. M’membe declared that the time for action was now and called for the creation of a united front that would chart a new course for the nation — one that ensures no Zambian is left behind.

Hichilema won’t be president forever – Nevers Mumba

Hichilema won’t be president forever – Nevers

MMD leader Nevers Mumba says most opposition leaders in the country have only formed political parties because of the hatred they have for President Hakainde Hichilema and not that they want to serve Zambia.

Dr Mumba stated that such leaders only want to unseat President Hichilema because for them, the current President does not deserve to hold the highest position in the country.

He said such bitter politicians must remember that President Hichilema will not be President forever and therefore their hatred for him should not be their only manifesto.

“President Hakainde Hichilema will not be President of this country forever, so you can’t limit your worth as a political leader to a tenure of office of another man. Let Zambia be your goal to change this nation into a better nation.”

“We need to do politics with politicians who can think, politicians who can reason and unite this nation and the only way they can do that is through good speech and behaviour towards others,” charged Dr Mumba.

He added that the opposition is not impressive as they believe more in insults, anger and hate.

[quads id=15]

“This type of politics is gone. We have personalised our hatred against President Hakainde Hichilema. You form your entire political career on hate and all those who hate President Hakainde Hichilema clap for you when you speak. That’s not being a leader, no,” emphasised the former Vice President.

Dr Mumba further preached that there should never be a place of hate in the country as it is a Christian nation.

“It’s not all the time that you will have a president that you will like and our politics should not be based on hate,” he said during the Hot Seat breakfast show yesterday.

Meanwhile, Dr Mumba said that those complaining about the high cost of living must be fair enough to remember that the UPND found the Zambian economy in a deplorable state which they are slowly bringing back to normal.

He agreed that the economy was not in good shape but admitted that government was gradually resolving it through the many policies he said had been put in place.

“It’s not fair to say the economy was better in PF. Numbers don’t lie. UPND has reduced inflation from 21 to 16 percent. UPND is doing everything possible to grow the economy,” noted Dr Mumba…https://kalemba.news/politics/hichilema-wont-be-president-forever-nevers/

Zambian Journalists Slam “Bogus” Bill and Disown Media Liaison Committee: “They Don’t Speak for Us”

EDITOR’S CHOICE- Zambian Journalists Slam “Bogus” Bill and Disown Media Liaison Committee: “They Don’t Speak for Us”

Zambia’s media community is sounding the alarm over what they describe as a deceptive and dangerous attempt to hijack journalism under the guise of professionalism and they are not holding back.

In a blistering press briefing held in Lusaka, leading journalists and media advocates took aim at the proposed Zambia Institute of Journalism Bill, warning that it is nothing more than an assault on media independence.

At the center of the backlash is a little-known group calling itself the Media Liaison Committee (MLC) the same group aggressively pushing for the bill’s passage. But journalists across the country have made one thing absolutely clear, the MLC does not speak for them.

“Misinformation is dangerous. The Media Liaison Committee does not represent Zambian journalists. They represent themselves,” declared MISA Zambia Chairperson Lauren Mwanza Chisanga. “We will not allow any group to use false representation to legitimize control over our profession.”

Chisanga warned that the proposed law is a smokescreen designed to smother press freedom under a false banner of order and ethics. “There are already enough laws regulating the media. This bill isn’t about improvement, it’s about control.”

And journalist Francis Chipalo also took the opportunity to shift the spotlight to the real crisi, exploitative working conditions faced by media practitioners.

“Let’s be honest: the biggest threat to ethical journalism in Zambia is poverty,” Chipalo said. “We are paid poorly, irregularly, and treated like expendables. How do you expect a journalist living hand to mouth to uphold ethics?”

He continued, “How about addressing the exploitation in newsrooms instead of chasing shadows with this bill? A motivated, well-paid journalist is the foundation of a strong, ethical media, not more unnecessary frameworks.”

Chipalo challenged media owners to prioritize fair pay and improved working conditions.

“We are not your enemies. We’re your partners in national development. Start acting like it.”

The press briefing brought together a strong media front, including Charity M’tonga, Kalunga Mwape, and Jessie Bwalya all of whom denounced the bill and discredited the MLC’s claim to legitimacy.

“No one elected the MLC. No journalist I know recognizes them. They are pushing a bill we did not ask for, did not contribute to, and absolutely do not support,” Bwalya stated.

“This is a hostile takeover. They want to impose control from the shadows using borrowed voices. We are saying: enough.”

The journalists also expressed solidarity with civil society partners like Chapter One Foundation, Media institute of Southern Africa, PANOS, Free Press Initiative, and Catholic Media Services all of whom have rejected the bill as unconstitutional and anti-freedom.

“This bill criminalizes journalism. It undermines everything we’ve fought for. And it must be rejected by the media, by Parliament, and by the people,” M’tonga declared.

Journalists reaffirmed their unwavering support for the Media Self-Regulation Council of Zambia, the only body created by and for journalists, through a democratic and transparent process.

In their final message, the journalists sent out a clear and defiant declaration:

“We are not begging. We are demanding. Keep your hands off our profession. We will not allow ourselves to be regulated by proxies, opportunists, or puppets. We stand for truth. We stand for freedom. We stand for Zambia.”

GOVERNMENT URGES STAKEHOLDERS TO SHAPE ZAMBIA’S PRIORITIES FOR COP30

Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary Douty Chibamba has urged stakeholders to define Zambia’s priorities for COP30, scheduled to take place in Belém, Brazil, from 10 to 21 November 2025.

He stated this during the official opening of the People in Need SB62 and COP30 Capacity Building and Technical Workshop at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka.

Dr Chibamba, in a speech read on his behalf by Hedges Tembo, Chief Green Economy Officer at the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, highlighted the importance of the workshop as a preparatory platform for private sector and civil society organisations ahead of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body meetings in Bonn, Germany, in June this year.

He emphasised key outcomes from COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, which included an agreement to triple annual climate finance to $300 billion by 2035 and operationalising carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

He acknowledged Zambia’s progress in climate policies, such as the Green Economy and Climate Change Act of 2024 and the National Adaptation Plan, as well as the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure the country’s effective participation in international climate dialogues.

[quads id=15]

Dr Chibamba also commended organisations like ActionAid and FIAN International for their support and urged stakeholders to contribute actively to Zambia’s sustainable development and resilience-building initiatives.

People in Need Network (PIN) Zambia Head of Programmes Rajesh Rai highlighted PIN’s commitment to addressing humanitarian crises caused by conflicts, natural disasters, and pandemics through preparedness, rapid response, and recovery.

He elaborated on its climate resilience initiatives, which integrate adaptation and mitigation strategies aligned with green growth interventions and circular economy principles.

Mr. Rai underscored the importance of equipping civil society with tools and strategies to actively participate in climate negotiations and implement impactful solutions.

Zambia Climate Change Network (ZCCN) Board Chairperson Maggie Mapalo Mwape called for a united voice as Zambia prepares for climate action talks at the international level.

She described the workshop as a crucial step in building an inclusive and resilient Zambia in response to the climate crisis.

Ms Mwape highlighted the ZCCN’s mandate to amplify civil society and local community voices in shaping the country’s climate action agenda.

She thanked People in Need (PIN) for co-hosting the event and expressed gratitude to longstanding partners such as ActionAid, CARE Zambia, WWF, COMESA, and UNDP for their support.

She noted the significance of grassroots participation in ensuring the national climate narrative represents all regions of Zambia.

Ms Mwape emphasised that Zambia is not merely a victim of climate change but also a source of solutions, pointing to community-led reforestation and indigenous climate-smart agriculture.

She urged participants to deliberate and contribute to a position paper that would amplify Zambia’s voice at the international level.
