WHY?

Because acknowledging this progress weakens their case for change in power. The easiest strategy in politics is to rename progress as failure, to minimise the gains, and to magnify every shortcoming until the full picture is totally lost.

Decide for yourself if this is failure or progress

IT WON’T BE SURPRISING IF DELIMITATION FAVOURS UPND STRONGHOLDS – MAKEBI

IT WON’T BE SURPRISING IF DELIMITATION FAVOURS UPND STRONGHOLDS – MAKEBI

PF presidential hopeful Makebi Zulu says it would not be surprising if the delimitation exercise favours most UPND strongholds.

Commenting on Lusaka Province UPND Chairman Obvious Mwaliteta’s remarks, who declared that he would contest the Kafue seat after delimitation, Zulu said it was mostly UPND members who were celebrating and looking forward to the exercise.

He, however, expressed hope that each of the 10 provinces would get seven constituencies.

“I would not be surprised if their constituencies favour them in their strongholds because they have been selfish. They have pursued personal interest or interest of the party more than the interest of the country. I say that because most of the ones that are celebrating and looking forward to [the delimitation exercise] are UPND members. So they know what’s going on. They know what’s going to happen.

So they can say whatever they have to say. But I’m hoping, or at least we’re hoping, that whatever the case, there should be equitable distribution of these constituencies. This is the way we are. We could at least allocate seven to each province, so that no region seems to be more favoured than the other. Because trust me, this process is likely to result in their regions having more constituencies than other regions which are not strongholds for UPND. I pray I’m proven wrong at some point,” Zulu said.

He also claimed that the entire delimitation process was botched.

“The whole delimitation is pretty much a botched process. What would have been expected and what we have been calling for right from the start is that prior to the so-called Act No. 13 of 2025, which was Bill 7 then, it should have been clear which constituencies are going to be subject of delimitation. Because for them to come up with a specific number as to the number of constituencies that were going to be subject of delimitation, it should have been known which constituencies those were going to be.

It wasn’t going to be about just shooting in the air. So in the same manner that this government is fond of rubber-stamping issues like they did where they set up a technical committee whose report they never took into consideration, just to try and sanitise the process, is the same process that they are undertaking right now. They already know the constituencies that are going to be subject of delimitation,” said Zulu.

I’M HAPPY THAT ELIJAH MUCHIMA HAS BEEN FIRED FROM HIS POSITION AS HEALTH MINISTER, SAYS CHIEF NYAKASEYA OF IKELENG’I

JUST IN; I’M HAPPY THAT ELIJAH MUCHIMA HAS BEEN FIRED FROM HIS POSITION AS HEALTH MINISTER, SAYS CHIEF NYAKASEYA OF IKELENG’I

Chief Nyakaseya of Ikeleng’i District in Northwestern Province has thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for firing Dr Elijah Muchima.

He says the people have been liberated because Dr Muchima will not be adopted to contest as area member of parliament for Ikeleng’i.

Last week, President Hichilema fired Dr Muchima as Health minister, along with his Small and Medium Enterprise counterpart, Elias Mubanga.

Muchima is the current member of parliament for Ikeleng’i Constituency under the United Party for National Development (UPND).

Commenting on the development in an interview, Sunday, Chief Nyakaseya apologised to President Hichilema for giving him a “wrong person in Ikeleng’i who failed to develop the area”. “The entire community has been liberated, we are slaves here. There’s no development here, we are behind, there’s nothing.

Archbishop Benjamin Phiri compromised by Hichilema- Sishuwa Sishuwa

Sishuwa Sishuwa Wrote;

I am surprised that Ndola Archdiocese Archbishop Benjamin Phiri today allowed a politician to use the pulpit for partisan interests or political agenda, less than a month after the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB), to which Archbishop Phiri is a core member,  wrote in the Pastoral Letter that no politician should be allowed to use the pulpit.

In addition to defying a collective position, Archbishop Phiri has allowed Hichilema to create a template whereby if the UPND presidential candidate is stopped from addressing the faithful using the pulpit in another parish, he will cry hatred. The @Pontifex and
@VaticanNews should take interest in the conduct of Archbishop Phiri. It undermines the standing of the ZCCB and the Catholic Church in general.

If individual leaders of the various opposition parties went to the Cathedral in Ndola to pray and request to be presented to the congregation like it was done today, will Archbishop Phiri allow this since the Catholic Church is known for its impartiality, fairness and consistency? Archbishop Phiri may be compromised or sympathetic to Hichilema but he should have respected the position that was stated by the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Delimitation meeting halts for 20 min after Lusaka leaders differ over dividing district

Delimitation meeting halts for 20 min after Lusaka leaders differ over dividing district
A PUBLIC consultation on constituency delimitation has evolved into a shouting chaotic scene leading to microphones being switched off in order to calm the situation as political leaders clashed over how Lusaka should be divided.

The meeting, convened by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) at the Lusaka New Government Complex this morning, is meant to gather submissions on proposed new constituencies in the capital.
Instead, it exposed deep divisions among councillors and members of parliament over representation in a city of more than two million people.

Participants demanded clarity on the total number of new constituencies ECZ intends to create in Lusaka.
At the centre of the confrontation was Kanyama Constituency, home to 526,418 people, the largest population among the seven constituencies under review.

Garden Park Ward 10 councillor Gerald Samboko rose to reject the Commission’s proposal to split Kanyama into two.
“Kanyama alone carries almost half of Lusaka’s population. Dividing it into two will not change anything. We need three constituencies,” he said, drawing murmurs and scattered applause from sections of the hall.

Across the room, other leaders shook their heads. Some demanded to know how many constituencies ECZ ultimately intended to create in Lusaka, arguing that without a clear figure the exercise lacked transparency.

ECZ electoral logistics coordinator Kendrick Sintufya attempted to explain that the capital’s population size had informed a proposal to create three additional constituencies by splitting Kanyama, Mandevu and Lusaka Central into two each, with every constituency comprising at least four wards.

“Lusaka has about 2.2 million people. That is why we proposed splitting Kanyama, Mandevu and Lusaka Central into two constituencies each,” he said.
Sintufya was interrupted repeatedly.
Meanwhile, Chilenje Ward councillor Reuben Mwenya protested, refusing to surrender the microphone, accusing fellow leaders of hijacking the process for personal political gain.

“These submissions have become personal. People are no longer speaking for the people but for individual interests,” Mwenya said, moments before the microphone was switched off while he was still speaking.

Within minutes, officials from the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) called for a halt to the public consultation on constituency delimitation as councillors and Members of Parliament moved toward the front, some demanding the moderator’s removal.
By the time proceedings were halted, no consensus had been reached on how Lusaka should be divided but the meeting was resumed 20 minutes later.

CF IS RISING, IT’S GETTING STRONGER EVERYDAY – KALABA

CF IS RISING, IT’S GETTING STRONGER EVERYDAY – KALABA

… those judging our strengths based on the previous by – election results are making a big mistake.

LUSAKA, MONDAY, FEBRUARY, 23,2026 [SMART EAGLES]

CITIZENS First President Harry Kalaba says the opposition party is getting stronger everyday and those judging its strengths based previous by – elections will get the greatest shock after the August 13 general elections.

Speaking when he interacted with Lusaka based Constituency structures at the party secretariat this morning, Mr. Kalaba said CF is rising and stands ready to contest this year’s elections.

He said CF is a party built on the dreams, the aspirations, and the collective will of the Zambian people.

“We have made great strides in the past three years, but there is still much to be done. Together, we will rise to the occasion and deliver the change that Zambia deserves, thank you, and may the people of Zambia embrace the message of hope and unity that CF represents. Let us go out and win, not just for us, but for all Zambians who believe in a better tomorrow,” He said.

” … as we prepare for the most important moment in our nation’s democratic journey—the elections of August 2026. This is a defining time for our party, the Citizens’ First (CF), and for our beloved Zambia. It is a time to renew our commitment to the people, to the values that brought us together, and to the vision we have for a better Zambia. I want us to focus on key areas that will help guide us to victory, to peace, and to a brighter future for every Zambian citizen,” He said.

Mr. Kalaba said over the past three years, CF has been the fastest-growing political force in Zambia.

He said this is a result of the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice of all Zambians.

” Our work is far from done. We must ensure that our presence is felt across Lusaka and throughout the nation. Take, for example, the example of Chawama, where we participated in the recent by-election. We have shown that we can win hearts and minds. But our goal now is to stay in touch with every community in Chawama, to engage every voter in all four wards, and to keep expanding our base. CF must grow stronger in Lusaka, in every province, and in every constituency,” Mr. Kalaba adds.

And Mr.Kalaba said the CF is a party that welcomes all Zambians who share its vision for a better future, regardless of party affiliation, tribe, or background.

“The time for division is over. We must work alongside anyone and everyone who is committed to the cause of change and to ensuring that Zambia gets a fresh start. Our focus should be on building a united Zambia where everyone’s voice is heard. Let’s set aside partisan differences and come together for the good of all Zambians,” He said.

“We have a responsibility to lead by example. CF must be seen as the party of peace, the party that preaches love and unity. As Zambia turns 62 years old this year, we must remember that we cannot preach unity while continuing to dwell on past wounds. We must go out to our fellow citizens and show them the way forward—a way of peace, reconciliation, and hope. The people of Zambia deserve a better future, and CF is the party that will provide that. We are a party that stands for peace, progress, and the prosperity of all Zambians. Let’s spread love in our communities, reject violence, and commit to a peaceful election season,” Mr. Kakaba said.

Mr. Kalaba also urged Zambians to secure and protect votes during the August elections.

“The path to victory is not just about getting to the polls; it’s about protecting the vote. As we prepare for the election, let’s remain vigilant and ensure that our votes are not only counted but are protected. We must create community-based first-line defenses that will serve as the initial responders to any election irregularities. This is an opportunity we cannot afford to let slip away. Our collective vigilance will ensure that the voice of the people is heard loud and clear. Every vote counts, and we must protect every single one,” He said.

” I want to remind you all that the CF has met all the electoral requirements, and we are fully prepared for the elections. We are ready to lead Zambia into a new era. However, we must also be open to collaborations and partnerships. Other political parties will approach us with a desire to join hands for the betterment of Zambia. We must be open and welcoming to these parties and encourage cooperation. Let us extend the olive branch to those who want to join our mission of creating a better Zambia. In particular, we must reach out to those who did not vote in the 2021 elections and remind them that their vote matters. This time, their vote will be a vote for change, for hope, and for the CF,” Mr. Kalaba said.

“In the coming days and weeks, you will hear announcements about other parties that are aligning with CF. This is part of our strategy to strengthen Zambia’s democracy, to form a broader alliance that reflects the desires of the people, and to ensure that we defeat a government that seeks to rule with an iron fist rather than leading with the people’s mandate. This is our chance to reclaim Zambia’s future and ensure that we never return to the days of repression,” He said

LOADSHEDDING HAS ALWAYS BEEN POLITICAL – Energy Expert Andrew Kamanga

‎LOADSHEDDING HAS ALWAYS BEEN POLITICAL

‎‎ENERGY expert Andrew Kamanga says the issue of loadshedding has now become a political issue.

‎Speaking during the Center for Trade Policy and Development (CPTD) podcast on Wednesday evening, Kamanga said the country had always had loadshedding even during the time of MMD under Rupiah Banda and PF under Edgar Lungu.

‎“What is important, we are coming from the background of loadshedding, which l think a lot of people may not be happy about. It has become a political debate. But we always had loadshedding, whether it was during MMD time of Rupiah Banda they had to import using a ka power ship. Even the time of PF under Edgar Lungu, we did have loadshedding,” said Kamanga.

‎It is true that Zambia faced the problem of loadshedding during the previous administrations, particularly under Banda and Lungu.

‎It was especially acute at one stage of Lungu’s reign actually when Zambians experienced longer hours of blackouts. And even then the matter of blackouts was political, something the current President Hakainde Hichilema exploited upon in lambasting how visionless the administration of Lungu was. The President actually wondered how countries that were situated in deserts had power throughout while a country like Zambia which had  a lot of water was bogged in darkness.

‎However, it is common knowledge to everyone now that Zambians experienced some of the worst blackouts under President Hichilema’s own administration, so much so that at one point the most that Zambians experienced in terms of electricity supply was 3 hours.

‎The situation has somewhat changed drastically in the last three hours where people are having so much electricity in their homes, whereby the complaints are now being directed towards the issue of electricity units finishing quickly and the units now becoming more expensive.

‎Some have asserted the the drastic change in electricity supply fortunes is on account of the upcoming general elections in August 2026. Whether that’s the the the main issue or not, at least an effort has been made by the government to respond to people’s cries. And we hope the same will be sustained now and after the elections.

CHITALU CHILUFYA BACK IN THE PF PRESIDENTIAL RACE.

CHITALU CHILUFYA BACK IN THE PF PRESIDENTIAL RACE.

The Patriotic Front Central Commitee unanimously elected to restore Dr. Chitalu Chilufya into the Central committee ahead  of the PF convention next week.

This means Dr. Chilufya will now legally participate in all party activities in line with party constitution.

What seemed as a high mountain to climb shocked many party functionaries after his reinstatement was put to a vote where he got 29 votes against 4 where 2 abstained.

According to a statement issued by PF spokesperson and Chairman for information, ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba the PF has readmitted Dr Chitalu Chilufya clearing the way for him to rejoin the race as he contends to take over the PF.

Dr. Chilufya has so far excited the former ruling party rank and file with his mature and exemplary behaviour in his campaigns, exhibiting high restraint and non provocative.

Dr Chitalu Chiluya who is Mansa member of parliament and former Minister of Health who fell out of favor after the PF lost elections and was expelled out the central committee for not attending meetings.

He will now mount a strong candidature at the general conference.

“Now am geared to take over the leadership of Patriotic Front and the central committee vote is a mock example that i have a majority vote of people that believe in my leadership and think I am best placed to become President ahead of 2026 elections.

“Some people used to think I am a weak contender, but my grassroot approach has put my name ahead of everyone and come 28th February its Dr Chitalu Chilufya they are voting for.” said Dr. Chilufya.

And Dr Chitalu chilufya has thanked the Central committee in an exclusive interview Diggers Newspaper for magnanimously admiting him back.

“I dont want to say much but i am very grateful to the 29 out of 33 that voted for me, and also to the 2 that voted against, in a democracy its healthy and shows that people can rise above pettiness.

SUNDAY  CHANDA COMMENDS GOVERNMENT ON SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMME; KANCHIBIYA RECORDS POSITIVE RESULTS

MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT COMMENDS GOVERNMENT ON SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMME; KANCHIBIYA RECORDS POSITIVE RESULTS

As Member of Parliament for Kanchibiya Constituency, I wish to commend the Government of the Republic of Zambia, under the leadership of His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema, for the continued implementation and expansion of the National School Feeding Programme across the country.

In Kanchibiya, the programme is working well. We have recorded improved school attendance, reduced absenteeism, and enhanced learner participation across many of our primary and secondary schools. Learners are more focused, teachers are reporting better classroom engagement, and school environments have become more stable and conducive to learning.

The School Feeding Programme has brought tangible relief to vulnerable households in our constituency. For many families, the assurance that their children will receive a nutritious meal at school has encouraged consistent enrolment and retention. Hunger is no longer a daily obstacle to learning for many of our pupils.

In collaboration with the District Education Board Secretary’s (DEBS) Office in Kanchibiya, we are now taking deliberate steps to strengthen and sustain this progress. We plan to support selected primary and secondary schools with sustainable production units, including school-based agricultural projects, to supplement the School Feeding Programme. These production units will enhance food security at school level, promote practical learning in agriculture, and reduce long-term dependency on external food supplies.

This initiative will not only reinforce the feeding programme but also instill entrepreneurial and agricultural skills among learners, aligning education with productivity and community development.

The School Feeding Programme, alongside free education, infrastructure development, desk provision, and teacher recruitment, continues to transform Zambia’s education sector. It is clear that this Government’s investment in education is yielding measurable results.

As your Member of Parliament, I remain committed to working closely with Government, the DEBS Office, school management teams, and community stakeholders to ensure accountability, sustainability, and expansion of these programmes.

Education remains the greatest equalizer. By nourishing our learners today, we are securing Kanchibiya’s and Zambia’s future.

ACC’S ANNOUNCEMENT THAT UPND MINISTERS INVESTIGATED OF CORRUPTION HAVE BEEN CLEAR HARD TO BELIEVE – PHIRI

ACC’S ANNOUNCEMENT THAT UPND MINISTERS INVESTIGATED OF CORRUPTION HAVE BEEN CLEAR HARD TO BELIEVE – PHIRI

POLITICAL Analyst, Bizeck Phiri says the recent announcement by the Anti-Corruption Commission clearing all Cabinet Ministers who were investigated by the commission has raised concerns.

The ACC recently concluded that Ministers from the United Party for National Development government who were facing corruption allegations had no cases to answer.

But Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Prof. Phiri said the declaration does not appear to be in tandem with previous findings from the Financial Intelligence Centre and trends reflected in the Corruption Perceptions Index.

“Such an announcement from ACC could be a sign of a lack of separation of powers and continued government involvement in the justice system,” alleged Prof. Phiri.

He warned that without genuine separation of powers, the justice system risks continued manipulation and may appear to favour certain groups.

Prof. Phiri has since called for strengthened institutional independence, emphasising that allowing the judiciary to operate freely is essential for it to function effectively.

Sishuwa Sishuwa’s  academic credentials are often overshadowed by his deep-seated hatred of Hakainde Hichilema- Chilufya Tayali

DR. SHISHUWA SHISHUWA NEEDS A LECTURE — HERE IS ONE FROM ME
========================
People say, “BaShishuwa Shishuwa balisambilila” (educated), but his academic credentials are often overshadowed by his deep-seated hatred of Hakainde Hichilema, allegedly because he was not appointed after supporting him when he was in opposition.

Dr. Shishuwa Shishuwa appears unable to accept the reality that President Hichilema is a duly elected Republican President, rather than the leader of a little-known socialist party.

Despite his academic accolades, Dr. Shishuwa seems unable, or unwilling, to distinguish between a petty politician using the pulpit of the Catholic Church for partisan purposes and a Republican President formally addressing citizens in church.

But if I can help Ba-Harvard guest lecturer, when the Catholic Bishops in Zambia issued a pastoral directive stating that political leaders should not be allowed to use the pulpit for political agendas, they did not imply that the Republican President is barred from addressing the public at Church gatherings.

That directive was meant to prevent partisan campaigning within sacred spaces, not to silence the Head of State acting in his official, constitutional capacity.

What must be emphasized—and which many critics, like Dr. Shishuwa, fail to grasp—is the fundamental difference between an ordinary politician and a sitting Republican President.

With all the education that BoShishuwa possesses, one would expect that he knows the Republican President is not merely another politician. He is the embodiment of executive authority under Zambia’s Constitution and the foremost symbol of national unity.

By long-established protocol and political convention, the President is a guest of honour at public functions held within the Republic, including those convened by faith-based institutions such as the Catholic Church.

To suggest that recognizing the President at such an event amounts to violating a pastoral directive is to deliberately blur the line between partisan politics and state authority. No serious democracy operates on such a confused premise.

Therefore, the Church did not invite a politician to campaign before the faithful. Rather, it formally recognized the Republican President in his capacity as Head of State. This distinction is crucial and must be understood in its proper context.

Furthermore, to propose that the Vatican should “chide” Benjamin Phiri for formally recognizing a sitting Head of State is absurd on multiple levels.

Firstly, BoShishuwa must know that the Vatican does not micromanage routine pastoral or protocol decisions of diocesan bishops, especially where no doctrinal violation or canonical abuse has occurred.

What is truly at stake here is not Church doctrine, pastoral consistency, or Vatican authority. It is this hatred of President Hichilema that leads to the refusal to accept President Hichilema’s constitutional legitimacy.

Anyway, BoShishuwa, allow me to say this: academic critique demands precision, restraint, and fidelity to institutional facts—not emotional tantrums.

In sum, it is not Bishop Phiri who owes an explanation to Rome. It is Dr. Shishuwa who owes the public a more honest, constitutionally literate, and intellectually disciplined argument.

UPND ALLIANCE NOT SHAKEN BY NEW GROUPINGS – MILUPI

UPND ALLIANCE NOT SHAKEN BY NEW GROUPINGS – MILUPI

UPND Alliance chairperson Charles Milupi says the coalition is not shaken by the formation of opposition groupings ahead of the August 13 general elections.

Mr Milupi, who is Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, has described opposition alliances as disorganised assemblages centred on power rather than ideas.

In an interview, Mr Milupi said most opposition alliances are “in complete disarray” because they are congregating around individuals seeking political office instead of building consensus on national development priorities.

His remarks come amidst the confusion in Tonse Alliance.

Tonse Alliance members include Christian Democratic Party, Patriots for Economic Progress, New Era Democratic Party, Zambia Republican Party, Patriotic Front, Zambia Must Prosper, and Forum for Democracy and Development.

Ichabaiche Movement for Good Governance, led by Nkana Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu, has also joined the grouping.

But Mr Milupi said the UPND Alliance remains confident of victory in the forthcoming general elections.

“It won’t work; I know what it takes to form an alliance. The first step is to have a set of ideas around which you congregate,” he said.

“Reform Is Working. Now Comes the Payoff.” – HH

“Reform Is Working. Now Comes the Payoff.” – HH

By Digest Reporter.

LUSAKA, In a calm but confident address to Parliament on Friday, Hakainde Hichilema made his clearest case yet that Zambia’s reform agenda is beginning to yield results, while candidly acknowledging that many citizens are still waiting to feel meaningful relief in their daily lives. Reporting on the application of national values and principles, the President framed his leadership as a deliberate shift from rhetoric to delivery, arguing that institutional repair, not quick fixes, is the surest path to lasting progress.

Mr. Hichilema pointed to concrete gains: the return of more than 2.5 million children to school under free education, a forty-fold increase in the Constituency Development Fund since 2021, expanded access to clean water and health services, and the recruitment of tens of thousands of teachers and health workers. These, he said, are no longer policy intentions but visible changes. He pointed at classrooms with desks, clinics within reach, safer markets, and communities with new economic activity as evidence.

The President placed equal emphasis on governance and civic responsibility. Paying taxes, rejecting political violence, and respecting the rule of law were described as acts of patriotism essential to sustaining democracy. He cited the sharp reduction in cadreism and faster prosecution of corruption cases alongside record asset recoveries as evidence that the state is enforcing accountability rather than merely promising it.

On the economy, Mr. Hichilema struck a note of cautious realism. Inflation is easing, the kwacha has strengthened, and investment is rising, he said, but he conceded that household pressure remains high.

His assurance to citizens was that macroeconomic stability, now largely secured, will increasingly translate into lower costs of living, higher incomes, and broader opportunities particularly as local-content rules and procurement reforms steer growth toward Zambian businesses.

With general elections approaching in August, the President closed with an appeal for restraint, unity, and peaceful political competition. It was a speech aimed less at applause than at reassurance: that Zambia is moving, steadily and deliberately, in the right direction.

For supporters, it affirmed a reform agenda taking root; for skeptics, it offered a detailed account of what has changed and a clear promise that delivery, not slogans, will remain the measure of leadership.

Njobvu slams Hichilema’s leadership, calls address to Parliament “lacking substance”

Njobvu slams Hichilema’s leadership, calls address to Parliament “lacking substance”

The President of the Democratic Union (DU), Ackim Antony Njobvu, has criticised President Hakainde Hichilema, accusing him of failing to deliver on key campaign promises and describing his leadership as ineffective.

Speaking during a Monday morning appearance on Crown TV’s Royal Breakfast Show, Njobvu alleged that President Hichilema “chanced” the presidency and has since struggled to translate campaign commitments into tangible results for citizens.

Njobvu further argued that claims portraying Hichilema as one of Africa’s best-performing leaders do not reflect the lived experiences of ordinary Zambians. He said many citizens continue to face economic hardships, questioning the basis upon which the President receives praise from both local and international voices.

According to the opposition leader, if government achievements were genuinely impactful, citizens would already be experiencing meaningful improvements in their daily lives. He alleged that individuals publicly commending the President are likely benefiting directly from the current administration.

Njobvu also linked what he described as leadership shortcomings to the historical roots of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), claiming the party’s original vision was shaped by its late founder, Anderson Kambela Mazhoka, rather than the current leadership.

He cautioned the ruling party against what he termed attempts to silence dissenting voices, warning that limiting political space and failing to accommodate opposing views could have negative consequences for democratic governance.

Meanwhile, Njobvu described President Hichilema’s recent address to Parliament as lacking substance, arguing that the speech focused more on self-praise than on practical solutions to challenges affecting the country, including economic pressures and social concerns.

The opposition leader maintained that national addresses should prioritise clear responses to issues affecting citizens, stating that Zambians expect measurable progress and policy direction rather than political messaging.

Government officials had not immediately responded to the remarks at the time of publication.

ZAWAPA DISMISSES PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S ADDRESS AS RHETORIC WITHOUT ACTION

ZAWAPA DISMISSES PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S ADDRESS AS RHETORIC WITHOUT ACTION

By Pride Nyirenda

ZAWAPA spokesperson Dr. Elias Kalinda says the Zambia Wake-up Party is dissatisfied with the presidential address delivered by Hakainde Hichilema, describing it as disconnected from the real challenges facing ordinary Zambians.

In a statement issued to RoanFM News, Dr. Kalinda says that although the President spoke about morality, unity, and democracy before the Parliament of Zambia, his administration has failed to effectively address corruption, economic hardship, and rising youth unemployment.

He adds that calls for national unity are meaningless as long as inequality continues to widen, with many citizens struggling to afford basic necessities and access essential services, particularly in rural communities.

Dr. Kalinda observes that Zambia needs decisive action rather than repeated promises, stressing that Zambians are demanding accountable leadership and development that delivers tangible improvements to their daily lives.

20 COPPERBELT TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS ENDORSE HH

Kitwe-22nd February, 2026

By Mukuka Nawa

Twenty colleges and universities on the Copperbelt Province this afternoon endorsed the candidature of President Hakainde Hichilema for the August 2026 General elections during a vibrant meet-and-greet event held at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

The colourful gathering brought together thousands of students who were represented by their respective student union presidents. The student leaders said their endorsement was based on the significant reforms undertaken in the higher education sector under President Hichilema’s leadership.

Among the twenty institutions that endorsed the President were Copperbelt University, Mukuba University, and Northern Technical College, among others across the province.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the union presidents said they were endorsing President Hichilema because of the reforms in the higher education sector, which include sponsorship for vulnerable students through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) skills training programmes and bursaries administered under the Higher Education Loans and Scholarship Board.

They said many students from disadvantaged backgrounds have been given an opportunity to pursue tertiary education due to the expanded bursary schemes and skills training initiatives. The student leaders further noted that through various government interventions, institutions have been equipped with necessary training equipment, improving practical learning and overall academic standards.

In his response, President Hichilema accepted the endorsement and expressed gratitude to the students for their confidence in his leadership.

He said no one wants to go backwards but forward, emphasizing the need to safeguard the progress made in the education sector.

“Meal allowances, bursaries, skills training and other student support programmes are here to stay,” he said.

“But for those to happen consistently, we need active leadership with foresight in power.” he added.

The Head of State urged students to remain resolute in the pursuit of their studies and to focus on excellence, discipline and innovation.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and quality education, stating that investing in education remains central to Zambia’s development agenda.

SOMALILAND OFFERS US ACCESS TO MINERALS AS IT PUSHES FOR RECOGNITION

AS the breakaway region of Somaliland continues to seek international recognition, it said on Saturday that it was willing to give the United States access to its minerals and military bases.

In December, Israel became the first and only country to recognise Somaliland‘s independence since it declared its autonomy from Somalia in 1991.

“Our friends, if it’s Israel or the United States, explore the potential of minerals that we have, particularly the rare earth and the strategic minerals, which we know are becoming very important for the US,” said Khadar Hussein Abdi, Somaliland’s Minister of the Presidency.

In an interview with the AFP news agency, he said the territory would “agree on something with the United States. “

Officials say the territory’s natural resources include lithium, coltan, and other sought-after materials, although independent confirmation is lacking.

In recent weeks, Somaliland’s leader, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, had already suggested granting Israel privileged access to its mineral resources.

Meanwhile, Hussein Abdi said he could not rule out the possibility of also allowing Israel to set up a military presence.

Mogadishu, which considers the region part of Somalia, has denounced Israel’s recognition as an attack on its territorial integrity, a position backed by most African and Arab leaders.

Analysts suggest Israel recognised Somaliland because of its strategic location across the Gulf of Aden from Yemen.

That country’s rebel Houthi’s have often attacked Israeli assets in the region, in solidarity with Palestinians.

But Hussein Abdi denied this saying the acceptance of Somaliland was “not shaped by military or security” but “by the fact that Israel has recognised an existing state”.

He said two countries that acknowledge one another “have the potential to agree on a number of strategic issues”.

WE ARE WORRIED THAT THE 5 MILLION CONDOMS AT NC’WALA IS NOT FOR HIV AWARENESS BUT PROMOTING PRE-MARITAL SEX – MAYAMBU

BATTLE Cry for Zambia Founder, O’Brian Mayambu, has criticised the public announcement that five million condoms have been set aside for distribution during the N’cwala Traditional Ceremony, describing the move as a sign that Christian values and principles are not being upheld in the country.

Apostle Mayambu argued that although authorities have indicated that the condoms are intended to help curb the spread of HIV, the manner in which the announcement was made sends a wrong moral message to the public.

He said that publicly associating such a large quantity of condoms with a traditional ceremony could be interpreted as promoting immoral activities, rather than encouraging responsible behaviour.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Apostle Mayambu said if health authorities are serious about reducing HIV infections, they should intensify awareness campaigns that promote abstinence, fidelity and moral responsibility, especially among young people.

“Abstinence is the most certain way of ensuring that the HIV virus is not transmitted,” said Apostle Mayambu.

He further called for a balanced approach in the fight against HIV, urging stakeholders to uphold cultural and Christian values while addressing public health concerns.

Mexican tourist town erupts into war as cartel fights government

Mexican tourist town erupts into war as cartel fights government

A major security crisis has unfolded in the resort city of Puerto Vallarta after Mexican forces carried out a military raid in the state of Jalisco targeting the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Authorities say cartel boss Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes was killed during the operation. The CJNG…considered one of Mexico’s most powerful and heavily armed drug organizations…allegedly responded with coordinated violence across the area.

Armed gunmen reportedly blocked roads, set vehicles on fire and clashed with security forces, while residents and foreign visitors were urged to remain indoors. The U.S. State Department advised tourists in the region to shelter in place after reports that some travelers were temporarily trapped in hotels and nearby neighborhoods.

Mexican defense officials stated the military came under attack during the raid and returned fire, killing several cartel members. The violence highlights the scale of the confrontation between the Mexican state and organized crime groups that control key trafficking routes along the Pacific coast.

Puerto Vallarta is normally one of Mexico’s busiest international holiday destinations, making the clashes particularly alarming for both locals and the tourism industry.

Ayatollah picks successors amid U.S-Israel assassination fears

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly prepared contingency plans and identified three possible successors in the event he is assassinated or dies, as tensions with the United States and Israel intensify.

According to senior officials, authority has also been distributed across multiple layers of the political and military command structure to ensure the Islamic Republic can continue functioning even if communications are disrupted during a conflict.

The preparations highlight Tehran’s concern about potential targeted strikes on senior leadership figures as regional confrontations, proxy clashes and military threats continue to escalate across the Middle East.

Khamenei, who has led Iran since 1989, holds ultimate control over the armed forces, judiciary and key state institutions. Any sudden power vacuum could risk internal instability, making succession planning a critical national security priority.

Bellarmine Mugabe’s Lawyer Speaks After Court as Case Postponed

Bellarmine Mugabe’s Lawyer Speaks After Court as Case Postponed

Speaking to the media after today’s brief court appearance at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court, the lawyer for Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and his co‑accused, Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze, said the defence could not comment in detail on the allegations because police investigations are still ongoing and the full docket has not yet been provided to them.

He confirmed that additional charges, including defeating the ends of justice and unlawful possession of a firearm, have been added to the original attempted murder count.

The lawyer also said the bail application was not heard today because authorities are still finalising verification processes with agencies such as the Department of Home Affairs and other bodies, and the defence team needs to consult further with their clients before taking the next legal steps.

Today, Mugabe, 28, and Matonhodze, 33, appeared briefly in court on charges of attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with a shooting at a Hyde Park residence last week in which a 23‑year‑old gardener was critically injured. The matter was postponed, and the pair will return to court on 3 March 2026 for a formal bail hearing.

Makhubele, who joined the MKP in 2024 and became an MP in January 2025, was appointed chief whip in May 2025. However, she was removed from that role eight months later as part of broader changes within the party’s caucus.

She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in Parliament while reaffirming her commitment to national development and addressing socio-economic challenges.

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze appeared before the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg facing serious criminal charges that have gripped public attention.

The two are charged with attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, and unlawful possession of a firearm. However, in a dramatic twist, the alleged firearm at the centre of the case has not been recovered, raising further questions as investigations continue.

The brief court appearance drew intense interest as proceedings outlined the weight of the accusations against them. Authorities have indicated that investigations remain ongoing, particularly regarding the missing weapon.

The case has now been postponed to allow for further inquiries, with both accused expected to return to court as the matter unfolds.

Mexico Explodes Into Chaos After Major Cartel Boss Takedown — Burning Cars, Highway Blockades, Shootouts and Fear Grip Cities as Authorities Warn of Power Struggles and Possible Escalation

Mexico Explodes Into Chaos After Major Cartel Boss Takedown — Burning Cars, Highway Blockades, Shootouts and Fear Grip Cities as Authorities Warn of Power Struggles and Possible Escalation

Mexico is facing a tense wave of violence following a major security operation targeting one of the country’s most feared cartel figures. While authorities view the operation as a significant blow to organized crime, the aftermath has exposed the dangerous reality of cartel retaliation.

In several regions, suspected cartel members launched coordinated revenge attacks that included burning vehicles, blocking major highways, and engaging in armed confrontations with security forces.

The violence forced some businesses to close temporarily, disrupted travel, and left residents living in fear as authorities urged communities to remain cautious.

Experts say these violent reactions are often triggered when powerful cartel leaders are removed. Instead of immediate stability, criminal organizations can fragment, leading to internal power battles or territorial fights with rival groups. This power vacuum can temporarily increase violence as factions compete for control of lucrative drug trafficking routes.

At the same time, Mexican security forces continue broader operations targeting drug networks, weapons smuggling, and increasingly sophisticated trafficking methods used by cartels. The government insists that sustained pressure is necessary to weaken organized crime, even though short-term instability may follow.

The unfolding situation highlights Mexico’s ongoing struggle against powerful criminal organizations — a battle that affects public safety, economic stability, and regional security.

👉 Do you believe targeting cartel leaders is the right strategy, or does it risk creating even more violence?

Mutsvangwa Provokes Zanu PF Hardliners After Publicly Praising Geza

Mutsvangwa Provokes Zanu PF Hardliners After Publicly Praising Geza

Tinashe Sambiri– ZANU PF National Spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa has sparked a storm within the party after publicly praising the late war veteran Blessed Runesu Geza, a figure known for both his role in ending Robert Mugabe’s rule and for openly criticizing President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

His comments during a press conference last week have drawn sharp condemnation from party hardliners who say Geza’s legacy is being politicized.

Speaking at the press conference, Mutsvangwa said he would have attended Geza’s funeral in Sanyati on Monday, 16 February, if he had not been away in Mombasa, Kenya.

“Geza was very active in the fight against usurpation of power and attempts to set up a dynasty in the First Republic,” he said.

He added that Geza played a key role in mobilizing leaders against the G40 faction.

“Geza is the one who brought me into the fight against the G40s. I have a lot which I can talk about, Geza.

There were attempts through a clandestine operation to arrest Cde Mahiya and Matendadama, and they were provided with a hiding place at Geza’s farm in Sanyati. For us, Geza is a comrade we walked with during that difficult time of safeguarding the permanent Zimbabwe revolution.

I definitely would have been available at his funeral for personal reasons, personal bonds, and for the things we did together when we worked against the G40.
He was at the forefront.”

Mutsvangwa also praised the Geza family for their contributions to the liberation struggle, noting that three of Blessed’s siblings served as commanders.

He highlighted that ZANLA commander Josiah Magama Tongogara named one of the camps in Mozambique after Pessintine Geza, a heroic member of the clan killed during the liberation war, and said Blessed’s brother, Sam Geza, was among ZIPA leaders who returned from Mozambique in 1975 to revive the fight.

However, Mutsvangwa’s comments drew sharp criticism from ZANU PF hardliners.

One senior party official said: “Mutsvangwa is glorifying a man who publicly attacked our current leadership. Praising Geza now undermines party unity and will not be accepted by loyal members.” Another hardliner added, “ Geza may have played a role in 2017, but elevating him now is political revisionism. Mutsvangwa is stirring factionalism.”

Geza’s funeral  received little attention from senior ZANU PF officials, and he was not declared a national hero, a decision many say reflected his outspoken stance against the current leadership.

“ONLY MANDELA & MBEKI IMPROVED SA”- Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi

🔥 NDLOZI’S BOMBSHELL: “ONLY MANDELA & MBEKI IMPROVED SA!” 🔥

Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has ignited fierce debate after declaring that, by the numbers, only two post-apartheid presidents truly improved South Africa’s fortunes, Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki.

Citing GDP growth, debt levels, jobs and crime statistics, Ndlozi argues that while F. W. de Klerk presided over sluggish 1.2% growth and a staggering murder rate of 69, Mandela boosted growth to 3% and cut debt. Mbeki, he says, outperformed them all with 4.3% growth, sharply reduced debt-to-GDP at 23%, over half a million new jobs per year, and the lowest murder rate in the democratic era.

By contrast, Ndlozi claims the Jacob Zuma and Cyril Ramaphosa years saw rising unemployment, ballooning debt and stagnation.

“At this rate,” he warns, “Ramaphosa could finish worse than De Klerk.”

His verdict? “Fact: Mbeki is the best president.”

McQUEEN ZAZA CONFIDENT SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE WILL ACCESS EDGAR LUNGU’s BODY AMID POISONING INVESTIGATIONS.

McQUEEN ZAZA CONFIDENT SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE WILL ACCESS ECL’s BODY AMID POISONING INVESTIGATIONS.

By: Thomas Afroman Mwale

Legal expert McQueen Zaza says he is confident the South African Police Service will be granted access to the Body of the Late former President Edgar Lungu to determine whether allegations that he was poisoned are true or not, claims his family has denied.

Mr Zaza explains that it is important to establish the truth behind former President Lungu’s death to provide closure.

He reveals that SAPS investigations commenced after incarcerated PF Secretary General  Raphael Nakachinda publicly suggested in a media interview that Mr Lungu could have been poisoned   a statement he says was not disputed by the Lungu family.

He states that the Lungu family’s silence on the allegation, including that of their spokesperson Makebi Zulu, fuelled the matter and prompted SAPS to commence investigations.

Speaking on SABC’s Channel Africa, the legal practitioner further referenced the investigation to alleged remarks by Dr Canisius Banda, who is said to have claimed that Mr Lungu was chemically assassinated at the hospital, allegations he says raised alarm and led SAPS to now seek access to the body.

Mr Zaza says since the former President’s death, the Zambian government has not been granted access to his remains and expressed confidence that the process will establish the truth behind Mr Lungu’s Death.

I Helped Lungu Secure Over One Million Votes Otherwise It Could Have Been A Disaster – Chris Zumani Zimba

By Current Zambia

Mundubile-led Tonse Alliance faction Secretary General, Chris Zumani Zimba, has disclosed that he played a key role in helping former President Edgar Lungu secure at least one million votes in the last general election, attributing this to his strong political strategies.

Zimba explained that when he was engaged as a consultant, he was candid with the President and the PF Central Committee about an impending political earthquake. He said his frank assessment unsettled some senior Patriotic Front (PF) members, but President Lungu appreciated his honesty and later appointed him as Political Adviser.

According to Zimba, despite the difficult political climate and widespread public dissatisfaction, his strategic input helped reduce the margin of defeat, with President Lungu ultimately losing by about one million votes.

He was responding to remarks by former PF president Miles Sampa who blamed him for the party’s loss, insisting instead that his involvement prevented an even worse outcome for the former ruling party.

Tonse Alliance Set to Fail

UBZ President warns youth against “political deceptions,” urges support for Dr. M’membe saying he is the only candidate capable of delivering real and lasting change

Saturday, 21st February 2026

United for Better Zambia (UBZ) Party President Apostle Hector Soondo has warned young Zambians that the Tonse Alliance is set to fail, urging them not to fall for what he describes as political “deception” by Hon. Binwell Mpundu and the alliance.

Speaking to Hot Information newspaper on Saturday, Soondo said the Tonse Alliance, led by Apostle Pule and Mundubile, has been hijacked and is now being used as a tool by UPND to mislead voters and protect the ruling party.

“The alliance’s purpose has been hijacked. What was supposed to be a platform to remove UPND has become a scheme to confuse voters and safeguard those in power,” Soondo said.

He accused Mundubile’s faction of deliberately creating confusion within the alliance and predicted that the group would withdraw during the nomination stage, leaving voters stranded and disillusioned.

Soondo criticized Mpundu for aligning with MPs who supported Bill 7, calling the move a betrayal of his supporters’ trust.

“This is political cowardice. Zambians deserve leaders who fight for change, not those who compromise principles for convenience,” he said.

The UBZ leader called on Zambians to throw their support behind Dr. Fred M’membe of the Socialist Party/People’s Pact, describing him as the only candidate capable of delivering real and lasting change.

He stressed that meaningful reform will only come through the People’s Pact and M’membe’s leadership.

Soondo urged Mpundu to apologize to his followers, rethink his political choices, and warned young Zambians to remain vigilant against “empty promises and manipulative alliances.”

I CAN’T ACCEPT INTIMIDATING ME BY THE MAKEBI ZULU TEAM – MUSUNGA FRANCIS

I CAN’T ACCEPT INTIMIDATING ME BY THE MAKEBI ZULU TEAM – MUSUNGA FRANCIS.

As Provincial Chairman for the PATRIOTIC FRONT, for Luapula Province I am not happy and cannot tolerate intimidation remarks coming from some members of the team who accompanied PF Presidency Aspiring candidate, Hon Makebi Zulu, when they visited the area to come and sell their candidate for the forth coming General Conference, to elect the Party President after the death of the Party and sixth Republican President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who died last year 2025, on June 5, may his soul rest in peace.

Facts of the matter are that on Saturday, February 21, 2026, Hon Makebi Zulu and his team came to Luapula Province on a mission to come and visit all the twelve (12) Districts for the purpose of campaigning amongst our structures in the Province in readiness for the convention to elect the Party President which is coming soon.

In their planning to meet our structures, they left out some Districts and said they were not going to meet each and every District and rolled out how they were going to meet the Districts selected to be met.

When I reported to my District Chairmen in the Province, they did not accept the plan of meeting some Districts and leaving out some, more especially that as Luapula Province we always move as one.

In addition to this all the Districts in the Province have already decided to support Hon Brian Mutayalwa MUNDUBILE, as a result of this the chairmen of the Districts decided not to meet Hon Makebi Zulu and his team. When I reported back to MZ and his team that the District Chairmen had refused to meet them, they didn’t take it well and started to intimidate me, saying that I needed to be replaced as Provincial Chairman.

One thing they should understand is that as someone who superintends over the structures in the Province, I make some decisions in consultations with other members of the Province and District Chairmen and it is not a one man’s show, we work collectively. I am aware that of course there are some decisions I would be able to make alone, and some it’s a must that I should involve others, I should not bull doze things. The other thing you should not forget is that the Districts and others in the Province are the ones who gave me the mandate to become PF Provincial Chairman when they voted for me in February, 2021, there’s no way I should work alone without their help, we work hand in hand together and in unity.

A piece of advice to Hon Makebi Zulu and his team is that he should have the heart to be united to other contenders for us to defeat our common enemy who is HH and the UPND, more especially that he is young and has got many years ahead of him in which he can become President. Let’s try to think and have mercy for a lot of Zambians who are living in abject poverty and our dear friends who have been incarcerated in prisons.

As a result of this team’s intimidation I have decided to step down as PATRIOTIC FRONT Provincial Chairman for Luapula Province, I will concentrate on supporting Hon Mutayalwa MUNDUBILE. They are calling me to replace me, I pave the way and give them the freedom to replace me with someone they want, but of course I will continue to be a serious and staunch PF member.

To all Provincial delegates in Luapula Province who voted for me on February 28, 2021, I am very grateful and really appreciate you for the confidence you had in me and I pledged to work with you and from the start to now I committed myself to you and I want apologize to some of you I injured on the way, please forgive me. Thank you very much and God bless all of you.

I submit.

EDITORIAL: The Pulpit, The Presidency, & Politics of Suspicion

🇿🇲 EDITORIAL: The Pulpit, The Presidency, & Politics of Suspicion

We must be careful not to set fire to its own institutions in the heat of election season.

President Hakainde Hichilema attended Mass at St Joseph Cupertino Church in Chifubu, Ndola. He worshipped. He thanked the Catholic Church for its historic role in education, health, and community service. He invoked national blessing. There was no campaign slogan from the altar. No party regalia inside the sanctuary. No manifesto read between the readings.

Yet, within hours, a political storm was manufactured.

Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa publicly questioned why Ndola Archdiocese Archbishop Benjamin Phiri allowed “a politician to use the pulpit for partisan interests,” referencing a recent Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops pastoral letter discouraging partisan use of church platforms. He went further, tagging the Vatican and suggesting the Archbishop may be “compromised.”

The implication is serious. It suggests institutional capture.

But here is the deeper question: when does a sitting Head of State cease to be merely “a politician” and remain, constitutionally, President for all?

President Hichilema is not simply the UPND presidential candidate. He is the incumbent President of the Republic of Zambia. He is entitled, like any citizen, to worship. He is also received, by protocol, as Head of State. Churches have historically acknowledged Presidents in attendance without that recognition constituting endorsement.

To collapse the presidency into partisan identity is dangerous. If every public appearance by a sitting President is interpreted as a campaign act, then the office itself becomes illegitimate. That logic burns institutions.

The Catholic Church in Zambia has long prided itself on moral authority and political independence. It has criticised governments before. It has defended democratic norms. It has issued pastoral letters that have shaped national debate. That credibility is not so fragile that a presidential presence at Mass destroys it.

Moreover, precedent matters. Successive presidents have attended church services across denominations. They have been introduced. They have greeted congregants. No administration exists in a vacuum.

What would be more destabilising? A church that acknowledges the Head of State at worship, or a country where the President is treated as a partisan intruder in every civic space?

Dr. Sishuwa’s concern rests on consistency. If opposition leaders sought similar recognition, would they receive it? This is a fair institutional question. It deserves measured engagement, not public escalation to Rome.

But framing the incident as defiance of the bishops’ collective stance may overstate what occurred. Recognition of a President is not equivalent to ceding the pulpit for campaigning. Context matters.

Election season magnifies suspicion. Every handshake becomes theatre. Every hymn risks interpretation. But Zambia must resist importing hyper-partisan culture into sacred and constitutional spaces.

The Presidency is bigger than party colours. The Catholic Church is bigger than electoral cycles. If both are reduced to factional instruments, the casualty will not be political advantage. It will be national cohesion.

Zambia stands at a sensitive moment ahead of 13 August 2026. Institutions must remain intact. Churches must remain neutral. Presidents must remain presidents.

Faith should not be weaponised. Nor should the Presidency be trivialised.

The country deserves cooler heads.

FINANCE MINISTER WARNS CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT COULD REVERSE ECONOMIC GAINS

FINANCE MINISTER WARNS CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT COULD REVERSE ECONOMIC GAINS

By Chamuka Shalubala

Finance and National Planning Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane has cautioned that Zambia’s economy risks setbacks if there is a change of government in this year’s general elections.

Dr. Musokotwane says stabilizing the country’s economy requires a clear and disciplined vision including working in harmony with investors, a move he notes has been key to restoring confidence and driving growth.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Dr. Musokotwane argues that not all aspiring leaders possess the long-term policy direction currently being pursued by the UPND, which he says places emphasis on sustainable development rather than short-term gains.

Dr. Musokotwane states that should the UPND lose power, there is no guarantee that a new administration would maintain the same economic policies and fiscal discipline, thereby putting the country’s current gains at risk.

He adds that prudent financial management and fiscal discipline have enabled government to manage resources responsibly unlike spending beyond the country’s means thereby leading to unsustainable debt accumulation.

FORENSIC SCRUTINY FOLLOWS ALLEGED FIREARM DISCHARGE INVOLVING BELLARMINE CHATUNGA MUGABE IN SOUTH AFRICA

FORENSIC SCRUTINY FOLLOWS ALLEGED FIREARM DISCHARGE INVOLVING BELLARMINE CHATUNGA MUGABE IN SOUTH AFRICA

By Shepard Yuda

An alleged firearm discharge involving Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe in South Africa has triggered public debate, political commentary and intense online speculation. Yet beyond the noise lies a narrower and far more technical inquiry, one that will ultimately determine the trajectory of any legal process: what does the forensic evidence reveal?

In firearm-related incidents, public perception often forms rapidly. Scientific determination does not. Investigators must move deliberately through a chain of evidence that begins at the scene and ends, if necessary, in a courtroom. The core question is neither political nor social. It is evidential. Who discharged the weapon?

Scene Control and Evidence Preservation

The evidential strength of any firearm case is shaped within the first hours. Scene management is critical. Cartridge cases, potential bullet fragments, impact sites and the firearm itself, if recovered, must be secured, photographed and logged before contamination occurs.

Every individual who enters the scene becomes part of the evidential matrix. Improper handling of the weapon, movement of spent cartridges or delayed forensic attendance can complicate later reconstruction. In cases attracting media and public scrutiny, adherence to strict chain-of-custody protocols becomes particularly important, as defence teams often challenge procedural integrity before addressing substantive evidence.

Gunshot Residue: The Microscopic Indicator

One of the most significant forensic indicators in firearm investigations is gunshot residue, commonly known as GSR. When a firearm is discharged, a cloud of microscopic particles is expelled from the breech and muzzle. These particles typically contain lead, barium and antimony and may settle on the hands, sleeves and torso of the shooter, as well as nearby surfaces.

In assessing such evidence, forensic scientists do not merely ask whether residue is present. They evaluate distribution patterns, particle morphology and concentration levels. A high density of characteristic particles on the webbing of the thumb and index finger may carry different interpretive weight than isolated particles on clothing.

Timing is also decisive. GSR can diminish rapidly through normal activity such as washing, friction or environmental exposure. Conversely, secondary transfer is possible through close contact with a shooter or contaminated surface. The presence of residue, therefore, does not automatically confirm discharge, and its absence does not automatically exclude it. Interpretation requires contextual alignment with other evidential findings.

Ballistic Examination: Linking Weapon to Discharge

If a firearm has been recovered, ballistic analysis becomes central. Every firearm leaves unique microscopic markings on cartridge cases and bullets when discharged. These markings are produced by the firing pin, breech face, extractor and rifling inside the barrel.

Laboratory test fires allow forensic examiners to compare these microscopic signatures with recovered evidence. A conclusive match can establish that a particular weapon was used in the incident. However, ballistic comparison identifies the firearm, not the individual who fired it. That distinction remains critical.

Trajectory and Spatial Reconstruction

Beyond matching weapon to projectile, investigators examine the geometry of the event. Trajectory analysis reconstructs the angle and direction of fire. Using laser rods, string alignment or three-dimensional modelling, forensic teams determine shooter position, height and orientation at the time of discharge.

If allegations suggest firing into the air, trajectory evidence may reveal vertical patterns. If horizontal trajectories are identified, the question of endangerment becomes more significant. Distance determination may also be possible through examination of powder deposition patterns on impacted surfaces.

Such reconstruction transforms a static scene into a dynamic sequence of movement and positioning.

Fingerprints, DNA and Handling Evidence

Latent fingerprint analysis may establish whether an individual handled the firearm or associated components. Recovery of ridge detail from the trigger, grip or magazine can confirm contact.

Touch DNA sampling from high-contact areas may further strengthen evidential inference. However, forensic practitioners caution that handling does not equate to firing. Shared access to a weapon introduces interpretive complexity. Exclusivity of contact strengthens the evidential chain.

Digital Corroboration and Multimedia Authentication

Modern investigations rarely rely solely on physical evidence. Mobile phone footage, surveillance recordings and metadata often provide additional layers of corroboration.

Forensic video analysts examine footage for signs of editing, compression artefacts or time discrepancies. Acoustic analysis can estimate the number of shots and sequence timing. Digital evidence, when properly authenticated, can either reinforce or contradict physical findings.

Legal Threshold Under South African Law

Under South African criminal law, unlawful discharge of a firearm requires proof beyond reasonable doubt. Prosecutors must demonstrate not only that a weapon was fired but also that the accused individual discharged it and that the act was unlawful or negligent.

In cases involving prominent individuals such as Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, investigative procedures are likely to face heightened scrutiny. Defence counsel typically examine collection methods, laboratory protocols and expert interpretation in detail. Even minor procedural inconsistencies can become focal points in court.

Awaiting Verified Findings

At the time of publication, no official forensic conclusions have been publicly released. Until laboratory results and investigative findings are formally disclosed, assertions remain speculative.

Forensic science operates independently of public sentiment. It relies on microscopic particles, ballistic striations, spatial reconstruction and legally admissible interpretation. In firearm investigations, conclusions emerge from convergence. Residue patterns, ballistic matches, trajectory analysis, handling evidence and digital corroboration must align coherently.

As this matter develops, one question continues to anchor the investigation: who discharged the firearm?

The answer, if established, will rest not on commentary or conjecture, but on measurable, verifiable scientific evidence.
