Njobvu calls for the dismissal of Information minister for alleged tribal talk
…as he maintains RTSA boss should go if HH is a serious President
By Francis Chipalo
Democratic Union (DU) leader Ackim Antony Njobvu has challenged President Hakainde Hichilema to prove the Zambian people wrong that he does not condone tribalism by firing Information and media minister Cornelius Mweetwa.
And Njobvu has maintained that Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) CEO, Amon Mweemba should equally be fired for alleged tribal talks to allow for an investigation into his leaked audio conversation with regards recruitment systems at the agency.
Mweemba has however been quoted in the media that he will not resign as he was quoted out of context over his conversation.
But speaking Monday night on Millennium TV, Njobvu said if the President is really committed about fighting tribalism, he should not hesitate in getting rid of Mweetwa and Mweemba.
“Mweetwa should also be fired because he is on record saying he was sponsoring Chishimba Kambwili to be saying what he was saying which landed him in prison, but yet him is freely roaming the streets,” Njobvu said.
Njobvu stated that with both Mweetwa and Mweemba still holding on to their positions, nothing can be done on allegations against the duo.
“They have to be fired so that investigations and legal proceedings against them can be instituted because we cannot have some people being sent to prison whilst others remain despite committing similar offenses,” he said.
Njobvu said tribalism is a serious parasite affecting national development.
“I think that is the reason why this government has failed to address some of the challenges this country is facing because they have not been employing people on merit, but tribe,” he said.
Meanwhile, Njobvu accused the judiciary of being selective in the application of justice. He argued that the law seems to be applied only to those in the opposition, and has since called for a level playing field.
Breaking News: Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Announce Withdrawal from ICC
Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger declared on Monday, September 22, that they are withdrawing from the International Criminal Court (ICC) with immediate effect.
The coordinated announcement, made in Bamako, Niamey and Ouagadougou, marks a joint decision by the three members of the Alliance of Sahel States, all currently led by military leaders.
In a statement, the three governments accused the ICC of applying “selective justice” and serving as an instrument of “neocolonial repression.”
The move comes months after the bloc announced plans to create its own Criminal and Human Rights Court and a regional high-security prison to handle terrorism and serious crimes in the Sahel.

AFTER BEING RELEASED FROM JAIL HE WENT STRAIGHT HOME AND KILLED HIS FATHER.
Tension high in Nyamache, Kisii County, following the lynching of a man by villagers just days after release from prison. The man is accused of killing his father during a domestic altercation at their home.
Authorities reported that the incident took place when 32 year-old Enock Obwaya assaulted his father, 80 year-old James Obwaya.
Witnesses stated that Enock repeatedly struck his father on the head with a club while his mother attempted to intervene. Her cries for assistance went unheard as the elderly man fell to the ground with serious injuries.
Investigations have since indicated that Enock had been released on bail just two days ago, after facing assault charges at the Ogembo Law Courts.
James, his father, was a crucial witness in that case.
Police suspect that resentment over the ongoing legal matter was the motive for the deadly assault.
Local noted that Enock seemed to be bitter with his father even after his release from prison.
They remarked that the murder and subsequent lynching signify a troubling trend in the region.

George Zinn, 71, was charged with four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor Monday after investigators found more than 20 images of kids as young as 5 years old, at least partially naked and “posing” in a “sexual” way, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Tuesday.
“Zinn admitted that he gets sexual gratification from viewing and sharing child sexual abuse material images with others, and that his preferred victim age is 5 to 12 years old,” the agency alleged.
Zinn, who is a political “gadfly,” is also facing a charge of obstruction of justice after he allegedly admitted to screaming that he shot Kirk on a Utah college campus Wednesday in a bid to help the actual shooter get away.
He was quickly taken into custody at Utah Valley University with that detention paving the way for the child porn charges, the sheriff’s office said.
The alleged senior citizen sick was initially hauled off to campus police headquarters, where he refused to cooperate, but was soon taken to the hospital for a medical problem, authorities said.
He ‘fessed up to not being the shooter there, and investigators successfully requested if they could take a look at his phone.
As he handed it over, Zinn admitted to state and federal agents that he uses the electronic device to check out inappropriate images of children, the sheriff’s office said.
“Those Agents did see several images on the phone of prepubescent girls scantily dressed,” the agency said.
A search warrant was obtained Monday that led investigators to find the 20-plus illicit images and “several very disturbing graphic sexual text threads in which Zinn shared images with other parties,” according to authorities. Zinn is being held in county jail.
TRUMP TO TELL OF GLOBALISTS TODAY FOR RECOGNIZING PALESTINE STATE ST UN ASSEMBLY.
US President Donald Trump will hit out at “globalist institutions” and criticize the recognition of a Palestinian state by Western allies in a speech to the United Nations, the White House said yesterday. Trump is set to deliver the first speech of his second term to the UN General Assembly on Today Tuesday, as the annual diplomatic gathering is dominated by Israel’s war in Gaza. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump would tout “the renewal of American strength around the world” in his address.
“The president will also touch upon how globalist institutions have significantly decayed the world order, and he will articulate his straightforward and constructive vision for the world,” she added.Trump has repeatedly criticized the UN and other multilateral institutions as part of his “America First” policy, and either cut funding for or withdrawn from a number of UN bodies.
Trump will meanwhile hold a “multilateral meeting” with the leaders of key Muslim countries at the UN assembly, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, Leavitt told a briefing. The move comes after several Western governments recognized a Palestinian state, angering Israel.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who will speak at the UN on Friday, has vowed to expand Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank after the recognitions.
Trump himself opposed the moves by Britain, Canada and Australia to recognize the state of Palestine, which France is due to follow on Monday.
“The president has been very clear he disagrees with this decision,” Leavitt said, noting that he had publicly done so with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a UK state visit last week.
“Frankly, he believes it’s a reward to Hamas. So he believes these decisions are just more talk and not enough action from some of our friends and allies, and I think you’ll hear him talk about that tomorrow” at the UN, she added.Trump will also meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN gathering, Leavitt said, as Kyiv seeks Western-backed security guarantees to prop up an elusive ceasefire with Russia.
In addition, the US president will meet Argentinian counterpart and key ally Javier Milei, a day after the US Treasury said it was mulling an economic lifeline for Argentina as it battles to calm jittery markets.

BILL 7: THE POISONED CHALICE THAT THREATENS ZAMBIA’S DEMOCRACY
By Brian Matambo – Lusaka, Zambia
On Sunday, 21 September 2025, the Emmanuel Mwamba Verified show exploded with one of the sharpest warnings yet on the dangers of President Hakainde Hichilema’s Bill 7.
The guest was State Counsel Musa Mwenye, a man whose pedigree is unrivalled: former Solicitor General, former Attorney General, former President of the Law Association of Zambia, and former Anti-Corruption Commission Board Chair. What he said was nothing short of a bombshell.
Mwenye reminded viewers that the Constitutional Court has already spoken clearly: the process leading to Bill 7 is unconstitutional. He tore into the Ministry of Justice for attempting to bulldoze constitutional changes without the broad-based consultation that has defined Zambia’s tradition since the days of the Chona and Mvunga Commissions. In his words, process is what protects content. Without consultation, without legitimacy, any amendment is nothing more than an illegal shortcut to entrench power.
He drew a chilling comparison. Apartheid was legal. Slavery was legal. But both were illegitimate. In the same way, a constitution pushed without the people is not only illegitimate, it is dangerous.
ISAAC MWANZA ENTERS THE DEBATE Then came a call that electrified the broadcast. Civil society activist Isaac Mwanza dialled in. He declared himself one of those who supports constitutional amendments to clean up the many flaws in the current law. Mwanza argued that there is a difference between making a new constitution and amending an existing one. He insisted that amendments must begin with proposals on the table, which can then be discussed. In his view, the Constitutional Court confused constitution-making with constitution-amending. He accused the judges of overreaching by demanding a wholesale consultative process for every amendment.
Mwanza’s challenge was sharp, but Musa Mwenye’s reply was even sharper.
MWENYE: WOULD YOU EAT RICE WITH POISON DROPS? Mwenye fired back with a metaphor that stunned listeners. “If I give you a bowl of rice with carrots, peas and beef, but I add two drops of poison, would you eat it?” he asked. Bill 7, he said, is exactly that poisoned chalice. It may contain some clauses that look progressive, but hidden within are toxic provisions designed to tilt the playing field and secure political advantage for those in power.
He warned that Zambians must not be fooled. Increasing nominated MPs from 8 to 10, handing the Electoral Commission the authority to allocate proportional representation seats without clarity, extending Parliament’s life by 90 days during which MPs do nothing but continue to get paid, and manipulating delimitation without transparency all point to one thing: power grab.
COURT DECISION CANNOT BE DEFIED Mwenye was categorical. The Constitutional Court ruling on Bill 7 is binding. To attempt to reintroduce the bill in Parliament without correcting the process is to spit in the face of the rule of law. “When government disobeys a judgment, it leads in promoting anarchy,” he said. It sends the message that ordinary citizens need not respect courts either, and it tells investors they cannot rely on Zambian law to protect their investments.
DEMOCRACY UNDER DIRECT THREAT The State Counsel went further. He accused the government of sowing the seeds of democratic regression. “If we are not careful, our democracy may be endangered,” he said gravely. He reminded MPs that one day they too may fall out of favour with the very government they are defending, and only the courts will stand between them and persecution. If the precedent of ignoring judgments is set today, tomorrow no one will be safe.
THE VERDICT Bill 7 is not just another amendment. It is a direct assault on the foundation of Zambia’s democracy. It is a cynical attempt to bend the Constitution to the will of a few. It is, in the words of Musa Mwenye, a poisoned chalice.
Zambians have seen this before. We endured the one-party state. We fought for multiparty democracy in 1991. We know the pain of living under unchecked power. Bill 7 drags us back towards that abyss.
The question now is simple: will Zambians swallow the poison, or will they reject it and defend the democracy that generations before us bled to deliver?

GUEST OPINION | Can Lungu’s Body Be Exported Like Frozen Fish?
The claim that Edgar Lungu’s body has been flown from South Africa to Spain is more fiction than fact. In the funeral industry, we know this much: a body cannot just leave a country like frozen tilapia wrapped in a carton. Human remains require layers of paperwork such as death certificates, embalming certificates, export permits, and airline approvals. Even for ordinary citizens, this takes days, thousands of dollars, and clearance from multiple authorities.
Now add the word “President” to that process. A former Head of State’s body is not family property alone, it is national property. Moving such remains is not only a medical issue, it is a matter of state protocol. South Africa cannot allow a presidential body to vanish under the cover of darkness without Zambia’s consent. Airlines, airports, and customs would all demand clearance at the highest level. Suggesting otherwise insults the intelligence of two governments.
And why Spain? That question alone exposes the absurdity of the rumour. Spain has no diplomatic or cultural link to Zambia that would justify receiving Lungu’s remains. For a European state to accept the body of an African former president without bilateral agreements would invite international uproar. No embassy would risk being complicit in such a move. It would be a diplomatic scandal of the highest order.
We must separate grief from governance. Families grieve in private, but when the deceased is a former president, the body belongs to the Republic. It carries history, dignity, and security implications. A Head of State’s remains are treated with the same seriousness as state secrets. You cannot export that in the cargo hold of a passenger plane without the world knowing.
Those who peddle these stories forget how repatriation really works. Even for ordinary Zambians abroad, paperwork delays and costs often frustrate families. Airlines insist on zinc-lined coffins. Customs officials inspect and stamp every document. The idea that a former president’s body could leapfrog these systems, without a trace, is nothing more than political theatre.
So let us be clear: Edgar Lungu’s body cannot be hidden, smuggled, or exported like a commodity. Rumours may trend, but reality is heavier than hashtags. The question before us is not whether Spain has received ichitumbi, but whether Zambia will preserve dignity, protocol, and honour in laying to rest the man who once held its highest office.

ENERGY EXPERT WARNS PARTIES AGAINST UNREALISTIC PROMISES ON ELECTRICITY AND FUEL AHEAD OF 2026 ELECTIONS.
By: Thomas Afroman Mwale
Energy expert Borniface Zulu has cautioned political parties against making unrealistic promises on electricity tariffs and fuel prices as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.
Mr Zulu warned that overpromising, particularly on lowering energy costs without a clear technical and financial roadmap, could have long term negative impacts on investor confidence, public trust, and overall sectoral growth.
He emphasized that while energy remains a vital pillar of Zambia’s development agenda, it is frequently misunderstood and misrepresented during election campaigns.
In a statement, Mr Zulu described promises of cheap electricity and lower fuel prices as politically appealing but economically unsound urging both the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) and opposition parties to anchor their manifestos in real time data and expert consultation rather than populist rhetoric.
He has therefore advised political leaders to avoid politically motivated energy subsidies, invest in expanding the country’s strategic petroleum reserves, and enhance public awareness on the true cost of energy. #SunFmTvNews

Malawi Civil Society Warns Parties Against Premature Election Victory Claims
By: Zodiak online
The Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum (CSEIF) in Malawi has cautioned political parties and candidates from the September 16 general election against declaring themselves winners before the official results are released.
Speaking at a press briefing in the capital, Lilongwe, CSEIF Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe said it was worrying that both the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) had already announced victory for their leaders. He warned that such statements could fuel political tension and confusion among the public.
CSEIF has since called on the Malawi Electoral Commission to continue handling the vote-counting process with transparency, noting that Malawians are anxiously awaiting the official outcome. #SunFmTvNews

NDINE EMMA SAYS FOR OVER 2 YEARS MATERO ARTISTS WERE BUSY TO FEATURE ON HIS ALBUM “MITH” UNLIKE CHEF 187
While featuring on Diamond TV’s ON THE TABLE with Chimweka, 24 year-old rapper Ndine Emma opened up about why no artist from Matero featured on his album MATERO IN THE HOUSE(MITH) when Chef 187 from Kopala did on two songs.
“It’s not like I didn’t try. I did try to like reach out to certain artists, but I think kapena benze busy, mwaiziba?” Ndine Emma told Chimweka.
He went on to say that unlike his failed over two-year pursuit to get top Matero artists on his album, it was easy to get Chef 187 as he is usually just one call away.
“With Chef 187, it was just easy, like I could call him right now, and if he’s free, he could come through here, mwaizibaka yakwati tiyeni tichaye ko ka interview bakamba, bazabwela. He’s always that guy for me, like he always comes through, like every time I need him,” said the rapper.
Despite that, he acknowledged that music is demanding compared to content creation. He therefore said it was easy to do a skit interview with Bobby East than it was to get him to feature on his song.
He added that he also wanted Slapdee on his smash song Sangakane off the album but said he might have been busy at the time he was recording the song in 2023.
Ndine Emma acknowledged the fact that Chef 187, being his idol and not Matero rappers, could have also played a role in failing to secure a verse from the artists.
“It does play a big role actually, I could feel it, but I don’t care. You can’t force it on someone, man! Even Mbappe is from France, but his idol is from Portugal,” he said.
He further said he loves the all, and they are his idols, but he has to choose one, and in that case, it would be Chef 187.
Ndine Emma told Chimweka that he saw no reasons to get entangled into the Lusaka vs. Kopala beef, as he was young and watching SpongeBob at the time.
Ndine Emma released his first 14-track studio album Matero In The House on August 30th 2025 and questions poured in after noticing that it didn’t feature top Matero artists despite it being themed on the famous Lusaka township but now they know why.
A 35-year-old man, Donnie Ray Birchfield Jr, has been arrested in South Carolina for allegedly keeping four vulnerable adults locked in the basement of his home for several years while spending their money.
According to People, police began looking into Birchfield after an unreported death at his Lancaster home in July raised suspicions. Investigators say the deceased woman and her husband were under his care but lacked proper medical treatment and showed signs of abuse.
Further investigation revealed two more women in the house — both allegedly held against their will. One of them is said to have lived there since 2015, the other since 2024.
According to warrants, Birchfield controlled his victims’ eating, bathroom use, and communication. He is also accused of strangling one of the women during assaults and threatening her by claiming he knew how to dispose of a body.
Authorities say he spent thousands of dollars from his victims’ bank accounts this year alone, including more than $11,000 to pay off personal debts.
“He’s a sick person to do something like that,” a neighbor, Darryl Evans, told WSOC-TV.
Birchfield has been charged with exploitation of vulnerable adults, false imprisonment, domestic violence, and financial fraud. He is being held without bail at the Lancaster County Detention Center.
A hilarious video has gone viral showing a bride hilariously struggling to get into a car on her wedding day.
Dressed in a tight corset gown with a voluminous skirt, she found it nearly impossible to sit down normally.
The moment quickly turned chaotic as several people jumped in to help, pulling her arms and legs in a bid to fit her into the vehicle.
The whole scene looked more like an emergency rescue than a romantic send-off. Many viewers have since questioned the practicality of modern wedding fashion.
Despite the ordeal, the bride eventually made it into the car, laughing along the way. The lighthearted moment added unexpected comedy to an otherwise glamorous day.
A Nigerian pastor has sparked online debate after a video surfaced showing him distributing bras to female church members who attended service without wearing one.
In the viral clip, the pastor held up several bras and instructed an usher to hand them out to the women in question.
He emphasized the importance of modesty in his church, stating that all attendees must dress decently.
To enforce this, the pastor appointed an usher as a “disciplinarian” tasked with addressing cases of indecent dressing.
He claimed the move was in response to a complaint from a male church member who said he was distracted during service.
The pastor made it clear that those unwilling to follow the church’s standards should consider worshiping elsewhere.
“If you can’t change through this church, look for another church. Somebody reached out to us last week that the guy was distracted. There are people that are coming from their house. They are looking for where God will help them,” he said.
There is a list of obscure banned baby names doing the rounds online, and people can’t believe some of the inclusions.
You may be a fan of using safe, recognised names for babies that have spanned generations, but the majority of people nowadays try to be as different as possible with their newborns.
Long gone are the days of ‘Jessica’, ‘Rebecca’ and ‘Jonathan’, and hello to the days of ‘X Æ A-12’ and ‘Zuma Nesta Rock’.
While naming your child after your favourite actor or sports star may seem appealing at first, the reality is that you can’t name your child anything you want.
Names in the UK that are banned include the likes of ‘King’, ‘Cyanide’ and even ‘Martian’ for their own reasons, but mostly to avoid clashing with official titles or to avoid the child being ridiculed by others.
The list of names in the US, though, is a lot more specific and includes more examples that would give you a chuckle.
It depends from state to state across the pond, though the majority forbids any numbers, symbols, obscenities or official titles, but a state like Arizona is quite relaxed when it comes to bizarre names and features like this.
All a name needs is standard characters, and for it to be short enough to fit on legal forms.
That means that Hulk is still on the table, for those wondering.
Most symbols are banned in states, though, such as ‘@’ or ‘#’, with numbers also forbidden in certain places – this is why Elon Musk was forced to change his son’s name just a month after his birth due to the law in California stating that ‘names must only use the 26 alphabetical letters of the English language’.
But specifically, ‘1069’ is banned throughout the US for one reason after the likes of North Dakota and Minnesota ruled names out which consisted of numbers on their own due to the confusion it would cause for legal and administrative systems.
The man to blame is named Michael Herbert Dengler, after he tried to change his name to 1069 back in 1976 for what was noted as personal and philosophical reasons.
Courts denied his wishes, even after he suggested using ‘One Zero Six Nine’ instead.
It marked a milestone for US naming laws, as the nation now restricts names similar to this one.
In case you were wondering, having no name at all is also illegal – but if you want to see the full list of banned names in the US, then scroll further.
According to USBirthCertificates.com, here are the 11 names definitely banned in the USA”

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has allegedly ordered the arrest of radio presenter Penny Ntuli after a viral video showed her twerking on the N3 highway, dangerously close to speeding trucks.
The clip, which sparked widespread outrage, appeared to show Ntuli dancing near heavy traffic in an attempt to distract truck drivers.
According to reports circulating on social media, President Ramaphosa described the act as “shameless” and “reckless,” and allegedly demanded immediate legal action.
Ntuli later issued a half-apology, directed not to critics but to truck drivers who may have been distracted. Her response has drawn mixed reactions, with some saying she should face charges regardless of the apology.
Police have not yet officially confirmed the President’s involvement but said the matter is under investigation.
A new controversy has erupted online after a mother revealed that both she and her daughter are expecting children by the same man.
The revelation was made through an Instagram post on the account @DanisWing, which featured baby bump photos of the mother, daughter, and the man involved.
The post sparked outrage across social media, with many users flooding the comment section in disbelief and criticism.
Despite the backlash, the mother expressed joy over the situation and shared her excitement about the upcoming births.
“My daughter and I are welcoming two littles by same man and we can’t wait for their arrival. This love is unmatched,” the post reads.
REVEALED: REPORTS RASHFORD WAS DROPPED TO THE BENCH AGAINST GETAFE AFTER ARRIVING 2 MINUTES LATE FOR A MORNING MATCH MEETING!
AFTER scoring a brace and being named man of the match in the 2-1 defeat of Newcastle United in the Champions League Marcus Rashford was expected to start for Barcelona against Getafe Sunday.
But the England 🏴 striker was dropped to the bench after arriving late for a team meeting.
According to those close to the development, Rashford was reportedly two minutes late to a team Sunday morning meeting.
It was said to have been caused by the 27-year-old still needing to electronically fill out information the club requests each day when they join up with the team.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has a strict rule concerning late coming which sees stars falling short dropped from the starting XI.
Last week. Raphinha was dropped from the starting XI after arriving late for an activation meeting.
Raphinha made up for the error coming off the bench to bag a brace in the 6-0 battering of Valencia.
It has been reported that Jules Kounde and Inaki Pena have suffered a similar fates in the past against the strict Flick.
The on-loan from Old Trafford Rashford did come off the bench at half time to provide an assist for the third goal as Barcelona beat Getafe 3-0.
The man who replaced Rashford in the starting line up Ferran Torres scored twice with Dani Olmo completing the rout.
In December, 2022 Erik Ten Hag dropped Rashford after the forward missed a team meeting after allegedly oversleeping.
These are aspects of discipline we do not see from behind the scenes and some mangers despite the talent can release a player in order to drive standards up.
Ruben Amorim may be singing from that sort of hymn book.
The Manchester United boss once declared that he would play his GRANDFATHER over a fit Rashford.
Germany have given us a chilling update on Russia’s recent attacks on nearby nations.
Despite Vladimir Putin and co. claiming that they are not preparing for a war with NATO – an intergovernmental military alliance between 32 member states – their use of drones and fighter jets in the likes of Estonia, Romania and Poland has worried Western nations.
As well as all of this, Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine is showing no signs of slowing down, despite attempts from not just Donald Trump, but key NATO leaders such as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
However, claims from Germany’s surgeon general have pointed towards the number of injured troops that would be involved in a battle with the nation would be too big a risk to take.
Europe are now preparing for a potential war with Russia, learning from the nation’s war with Ukraine.
Speaking about what a war with Ukraine would entail, surgeon general Ralf Hoffmann explained, per Metro: “Realistically, we are talking about a figure of around 1,000 wounded troops per day.”
The exact number, though, is dependent on the intensity of a battle and the military units which would be involved.
NATO has increased its military spending in response to the threats, with some nations even reconsidering the reintroduction of conscription, including medical services.
“The nature of warfare has changed dramatically in Ukraine,” he said of the shift from gunshot injuries to burns that are caused by machine-related warfare such as drones.
“The Ukrainians often cannot evacuate their wounded fast enough because drones are buzzing overhead everywhere,” Hoffman further explained.
He spoke of the need for long-term stabilisation of soldiers in need of medical attention at the frontline, as Ukrainian soldiers have spoken about the area labelled the ‘kill zone’, just five miles either side of the frontline where unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operate.
He spoke of the need for transport options for troops, with the German military looking to invest in hospital trains, buses and methods to expand medical evacuation by air.
Hoffman also explained the need for Germany to prioritise initial treatment on the frontline before being transported back for care, which would require thousands more German hospitals.
It comes after three Russian MiG-31 drones entered Estonian airspace without permission on 19 September for 12 minutes before being forced to leave.
The UN Security Council is set to discuss the incident later today (22 September) and NATO 4 consultations too.
Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov claimed to reporters: “We never heard in the Estonian statement that they have objective monitoring data (to back up their claim).
“That is why we consider such words to be empty, unfounded and a continuation of a completely reckless pattern of escalating tensions and provoking a confrontational atmosphere.”
The FBI has confirmed it’s taking viral conspiracy theories about Charlie Kirk’s assassination seriously, including reports of hand gestures allegedly being made just before the MAGA supporter was killed
On 10 September, conservative activist Kirk was fatally shot in the neck during an event in Utah.
According to FBI Director Kash Patel, security agents have been pursuing every possible lead to confirm details related to the campaigner’s death.
In a post shared to Twitter, Patel, 45, wrote that the full weight of America’s law enforcement agencies were ‘actively following the evidence that has emerged’, explaining their efforts were extending beyond ‘initial findings’.
“We are examining every facet of this assassination,” he continued.
Patel confirmed that his agents were ‘meticulously investigating theories and questions’ surrounding the assassination, including the location where 22-year-old suspect Tyler Robinson is alleged to have taken the shot, its angle, and the bullet impact.
Experts are also looking into how the weapon was transported to the building, which overlooked Utah Valley University, and whether the shooter had accomplices.
Any visitors to the alleged shooter’s residence in the hours and days leading up to 10 September were being probed too.
Online sleuths had previously examined footage, claiming some people at the Prove Me Wrong event were making what appeared to be ‘signals’ just moments before the Turning Point USA founder was shot.
One of these was a man standing near the 31-year-old in a white baseball cap, who CNN Politics named as Kirk’s friend and Christian radio host, Frank Turek.
The outlet said there was no basis to the claims that the bystander was making hand gestures.
Turek’s team has also cleared up he conspiracy theory, writing on Twitter: “The viral accusations against Dr. Frank Turek are categorically false. Dr. Turek was at Utah Valley University as part of Charlie Kirk’s team, standing with him as a close friend and mentor.”
American actress Angelina Jolie has said that she no longer recognises her country, expressing concern over threats to free expression while promoting her latest film at Spain’s San Sebastián Film Festival.
Her remarks come amid growing concerns about freedom of speech in the United States, following President Donald Trump’s crackdown on critical media and the recent suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s show over comments about the killing of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.
“I love my country, but I don’t at this time recognise my country,” Jolie said when asked if she feared for freedom of speech in the US. “Anything, anywhere, that divides or, of course, limits personal expressions and freedoms and, from anyone, I think is very dangerous,” she added.
“These are very, very heavy times we’re all living in together.”
Jolie, 50, was in San Sebastián to promote Couture, directed by French filmmaker Alice Winocour, which is competing for the festival’s top prize, the Golden Shell.
She plays Maxine Walker, an American film director facing divorce and serious illness while navigating Paris Fashion Week and embarking on a romance with a colleague, played by French actor Louis Garrel.
The Oscar-winning actress, honoured in 1999 for her role in Girl, Interrupted, said she related personally to the struggles of her latest character.
Jolie underwent a double mastectomy in 2013 and later had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed to reduce her high genetic risk of cancer, which claimed the lives of her mother and grandmother.
Visibly moved, she said she often thought of her mother while making the film. “I wish she was able to speak more as openly as I have been, and have people respond as graciously as you have, and not feel as alone,” Jolie said.
“There’s something very particular to women’s cancers, because obviously it affects us, you know, how we feel as women,” she added.
Hamas militant group has reportedly sent a letter directly to US President Donald Trump, offering a 60-day ceasefire in exchange for the release of half the hostages held in Gaza.
According to reports, the letter is currently with Qatari officials and is expected to be delivered to the White House this week. Qatar has frequently acted as a mediator in past ceasefire talks between Hamas, Israel, and the United States.
Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff previously said negotiations collapsed in June, accusing Hamas of showing “a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza.”
The development comes as Trump meets with foreign leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where calls for peace have grown louder. On Sunday, the United Kingdom, Canada, Portugal, and Australia formally recognized a Palestinian state. More than 145 countries worldwide already do so.
Trump has opposed the move, arguing that recognition “emboldens extremists and rewards Hamas,” the group behind the October 7, 2023, attacks on southern Israel that triggered the war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also condemned the recognition, saying:
“I have a clear message to those leaders who recognize a Palestinian state after the terrible massacre on October 7th, 2023: You are giving a huge reward to terrorism. And I have another message for you: It will not happen. A Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan River.”
The Trump administration has already tightened restrictions, announcing last month it would deny or revoke visas for Palestinian officials and diplomats unless they “completely reject terrorism” and stop pushing for unilateral recognition.
Forty-eight hostages remain in Gaza, though fewer than half are believed to be alive. Recently, Trump issued what he described as his “last warning” to Hamas, demanding the return of the captives.
American tv host, Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show, which was abruptly suspended last week after his comments on Christian activist Charlie Kirk’s shooting sparked backlash, is set to return on Tuesday.
According to CNN, Disney, parent company of ABC, said the pause was to “avoid inflaming a tense situation” and that talks with Kimmel have since taken place.
The suspension had stirred controversy, with critics accusing the government of pressuring broadcasters. Trump had hailed the removal as “Great News for America,” while even some of his allies, including Senator Ted Cruz and broadcaster Tucker Carlson, raised concerns.
Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé has been crowned the winner of the 2025 Ballon d’Or, football’s most prestigious individual award, at a glittering ceremony in Paris on Monday night.
The French international capped off an extraordinary 2024/25 season with 35 goals and 16 assists in all competitions, playing a decisive role in PSG’s historic campaign. His brilliance helped the club achieve a long-awaited first UEFA Champions League triumph, while also securing the Ligue 1 title and the Coupe de France to complete a famous treble.
Dembélé’s win is especially remarkable given the adversity he faced earlier in his career, battling persistent injuries and inconsistency that once threatened his potential. At 28, he has now reached the pinnacle of world football, fulfilling the promise many saw in him as a teenager.
The PSG star finished ahead of Barcelona’s 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal and other elite nominees, cementing his place among the game’s greats. His triumph not only adds to his personal legacy but also reinforces PSG’s growing global dominance, with the French champions also recognized as the Best Team of the Year at the ceremony.
PRESIDENT HICHILEMA MEETS GLOBAL INVESTORS, HIGHLIGHTS ZAMBIA’S GROWING INVESTMENT APPEAL
Lusaka… Monday September 22, 2025 – President Hakainde Hichilema has said Zambia remains an increasingly attractive destination for international investment, following a high-level courtesy call by global investors led by First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Chief Executive Officer Tristan Pascall.
The delegation also included representatives from Bank of America, Barclays, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, and Morgan Stanley, among others.
The President explained that the visit demonstrated both the investors’ commitment to their current portfolios and their confidence in Zambia’s economic outlook.
He added that discussions had centered on expanding opportunities in key sectors such as energy, mining, agriculture, tourism, water, logistics, technology, and digital services.
According to Mr. Hichilema, Zambia continues to stand out as a market defined by stability, predictability, and an improved operating environment–qualities that he said are attracting growing global interest.
He further emphasized that Africa should not be viewed as a single, uniform investment space but as a continent made up of diverse nations offering unique opportunities.
Zambia, in particular, was highlighted as a country with distinct prospects that investors could pursue with confidence.
The President expressed gratitude to the international delegation for choosing Zambia as a destination for meaningful business and investment, noting that such partnerships were essential in driving the nation’s development agenda.
THE Patriotic Front (PF) has announced that it will hold a general conference before the end of the year.
Speaking at a media briefing following their Central Committee meeting, party secretary general Raphael Nakacinda said late President Edgar Lungu’s family will be updated on the stages of preparation for the conference.
He said a committee will be set up to spearhead the preparations, adding that the conference will be held as soon as possible.
“Let me emphasise, we will not delay the conference because we have work to do afterwards as we focus on the 2026 elections,” he said.
Mr Nakacinda further said the PF remains the biggest political party and will participate in the 2026 general election.
“We have also resolved to work with like-minded partners within the opposition family, those who believe that the UPND is inimical to the interests of this country. With such groups, we will cooperate, collaborate, and work together until we achieve the aspirations of the Zambian people,” he said.
Mr Nakacinda also announced that the Central Committee ratified various appointments aimed at enhancing preparations for the forthcoming general conference.
MWANAKAMPWE RECOUNTS 2017 TORTURE ORDEAL: “PF POLICE BROKE MY TESTICLE, LOCKED ME IN A MORTUARY ”
CENTRAL Province Permanent Secretary Milner Mwanakampwe has recounted the pain and torture he endured in 2017, when, as the then Youth Chairman for Central Province, he found himself caught in a politically charged moment.
This was during the period when President Hakainde Hichilema, then the main opposition leader, was arrested and detained at Mukobeko Maximum Prison on treason charges. Mwanakampwe’s experience under that tense political climate has now come to light as he recalls the difficult moments he lived through.
During a recent interview with Diggers Life, Mwanakampwe shared how he was tied upside down and tortured until one of his testicles was broken. He says that one of his testicles remains broken to this day, and the ordeal also left one of his ears completely impaired.
He narrated how he spent the night in the mortuary from midnight to 05:00 hours, with the doors locked and the lights off, swallowed by an oppressive darkness. He recalled rats scurrying across the cold floor and how every rustle made him flinch, as if the dead around him were coming back to life.
Mwanakampwe began his story by explaining that the ordeal started in March 2017 after he travelled with HH to Western Province for the Kuomboka Ceremony and then to Limulunga.
“Kuomboka, we are back from there, and as soon as we came back, we were on a road to Limulunga ourselves, with HH [and] his convoy. HH was vehicle number one, number two, number three. And then the President of the Republic of Zambia then, President Edgar Lungu, he was supposed to fly; he decides to drive, to follow his counterpart, to follow his friend, to follow his brother. Under normal circumstances, where there is a presidential motorcade coming, police are supposed to be stationed throughout that route, they call it routing. There was no routing, there was no policing there. We are there, and he comes and he overtakes us,” he recounts.
“And a week and two days, some few days later, they come, instead of sending a call-out, they come to break President Hichilema’s house. Every one of us who was there, including Honourable Nkombo, who came a little bit later, was badly beaten, badly beaten, and I’m saying badly beaten. In the morning, President Hichilema gives himself; he’s taken to prison. And back here in Kabwe, he is brought to Mukobeko. Now you should know, when he was brought to Mukobeko, I live in Kabwe, he is my president. I was the Provincial Youth Chairman for the province, meaning the coordination of visits, the coordination of where the wife and the family should sleep was in my hands, okay? That was in 2017″.
He recounts how, in early August, he was offered a ministerial position by the then PF government, along with two vehicles for his wife.
Mwanakampwe said he politely rejected the offer, telling them he would only accept if the President at the time, Edgar Lungu, first released his brother, Hakainde Hichilema, from prison.
“Earlier in or about August 4th, I received a gentleman from OP who tells me President Lungu wants to appoint you as Minister of Commerce. He comes home and he tells me we have bought two vehicles for your wife, and we will give you two vehicles. They are already in your name. Then I told them, with due respect, the best that I can do is go and tell His Excellency the President that I have accepted to be appointed, but the first thing that he should do is to release his brother from Mukobeko because he has not done anything, before then, he can forget. That was 4th,” he said.
“On 7th of August, I received three former ministers. Two of them are in jail now, some of them I will not mention names. Two of them are in jail. I received them, they come home unexpectedly and they tell me the President wants you to work with him, and you must defect today. And I tell them, I don’t defect, you tell the President that I already gave my position, that as long as his brother is in prison for an offence that he never committed, because he was not the driver of the vehicle, number one, number two, why hasn’t the driver of the first vehicle been arrested? Why hasn’t ’t the driver and the occupant of the second vehicle been arrested? You come for the third vehicle, the fourth vehicle had the Vice President of UPND then, Dr GBM. Why hasn’t he been picked? And you want me to work with people who are holding on to the President over a traffic offence? You can, with humility, go and tell him that I do not work like that. I may be starving, if you think I’m starving, but I would rather starve with dignity than go and eat with my conscience that is killing me. I would not do that”.
Mwanakampwe said on August 8, he was warned that President Lungu considered him to be “too cheeky”.
He added that later that same day, his Provincial Secretary warned him that police were looking for him and had been instructed to arrest him for a murder he knew nothing about.
“Then on the 8th, I received one of the directors from OP, and I’m told the President feels that you are too cheeky. And basically from there, then, I say, if I’m too cheeky, I’m sorry, because I’m stating nothing but the truth. Mr Hichilema has shaped me in terms of who I believe I should be. Now, to betray him at such kind of a critical and defining moment… The same day, there came a story that they wanted to go and paint a cell at Mukobeko where he was. I went there with the wife and the current Attorney General, I went there. And, yes, State Counsel Kabesha was using the law, but look, I am a youth chairman, and my president should be given a cell that has fresh paint, and I said no to this. If you do that, all of us you’ll lock, all of us here. Then in the evening, my provincial secretary then calls me and said I have a leakage for you. I’m told the policemen from C1, they call it C1, are looking for you, and they’ve been instructed to arrest you. What have I done? That you have killed someone? So, on a Thursday, they are supposed to come for me. I’m told I’ve killed someone. I don’t know who this person is,” he said.
“I go to Mukobeko to see the President. They knock me out. I didn’t see him that day. On a Saturday morning, the wife, myself, and the wife’s big sister, Aunty Beatrice, we go to Mukobeko, we see the boss. Then I tell the boss, boss, today I’ll be arrested, I have that feeling. There has been a chronology of issues, but I didn’t want to bore him. What was happening outside was we needed to provide leadership at that stage, when people were running away, when people were betraying him. We needed someone who would be firm and look up to God for prayers and provide strength to the family. And true to my word, in the morning we come from Mukobeko to a radio station, I had a programme. From there I drive to church with my son. Then I see people coming, I told myself let me be just strong. They get into church. In the midst of the sermon, I sat next to a very senior guy, a Commissioner General of one of the institutions. I see him walk out, back, then he tells me police are looking for you outside”.
He recalls that intelligence officers picked him up from church and accused him of being the last person to speak with a woman who had died.
“Now, I didn’t realise that the whole bench in front of me were intelligence police officers, and behind me, I’m slightly picked. I go outside, what have I done? I’m told, you’ll answer where you are going. They drove me to division headquarters and they showed me a number. Do you know this number? I said, I don’t know. I check in my phone, yes, you have been communicating with this lady, and you’re the last person to communicate with this lady, and she is dead, so you have to tell us who killed this lady. I said, oho my God, is that so? Then I asked them, now you know what, you have arrested me, my son has remained alone at church, he’ll be waiting, please take me back to church. I tell my son to walk back home. We got back to church, they were dispersing. I tell my son I have been arrested. He said, so they want to kill you, they want to kill President HH. This is a 5-year-old boy, and he told them, as long as God lives, 5 years old, you’ll never find peace,” he recounts.
“So, I said, are you going to allow me to pray? One of them asked me, you pray to who? And they sent me to the vehicle and we drive. One of the gentlemen, who was, I think, a bit kind to me, I discovered I wasn’t being arrested by police officers, I discovered it was Zambia Army, I discovered it was Zambia National Service, I discovered it was ZAF, and one gentleman from police intelligence. So this General, General Phiri to be precise, says, ‘imwe musiyeni apempele.’ (Let him pray).
I prayed that God have it your own way. If my time to go has come, allow us to go, but you’re God and you still remain God. And we drove. So when we reached Ulemu, that’s when I knew the giganticness of the matter, the number of vehicles I found waiting for me. So we drove all the way into Lusaka. The current First Lady contacted the lawyers quickly, Hon Jack Mwiimbu, Mulambo Haimbe, Martha Mushipe, Gilbert Phiri and Keith Mweemba. All of them went to Central Police”.
Mwanakampwe further recounts being blindfolded, beaten and electrocuted in a mortuary.
“Before I knew it, they diverted me from Central Police, locked me at Kabwata. Midnight they came for me and blindfolded me, and they started driving me the whole way, wherever they were taking me, maybe for two hours. Then finally they stopped and we started going down, and a gentleman called Col. Simukoko asked me, ‘Now, you’re in the world of the dead.’ I realised we were in a mortuary. No, I wasn’t blindfolded; they had untied me by that stage. I realised I was in a mortuary. They told me we’re pulling down the fridges of the dead bodies, and they told me if you don’t tell us about HH, where his money comes from, the farms that you promised people in Lusaka West, you met these people at this hotel which is at Levy at Stay Easy to be precise, you and Chief Mukuni and Chief Hamusonde, you met people there, you paid them and you bought them farms in Lusaka West, so you have to tell us. So now I asked them, ‘How can you speak to me like that? I have not been to Stay Easy in a very long time.’ Then I’m told, ‘No, no, no, you met at Stay Easy,’” he narrated.
“So now the beating at that stage had become merciless. I was bleeding from both the nose and the ears. At one stage I don’t remember whether I had fainted, I don’t remember, but I could still hear the other one saying, ‘Gentlemen, this is not the way to treat a fellow human being.’ Then the gentleman called General Phiri, I suspect he was innocent because he kept on urging with them. Now at that stage they got those things they use which they put in your ears and it has electricity; it was electrocuting me. They tell me if you’re not ready to talk, we’re leaving you up here in the mortuary,’ and they locked me up in there and they left me in there. I suspect, it could have been 01, 02 hours; they switched off the lights, everything is off, and off they went. I shook, i prayed”.
Mwanakampwe said he was so terrified that he prayed to God to take his life.
“There are a lot of rats in that mortuary; every time you hear a rat passing you think there is a resurrection. If there was a time I asked God to kill me, it was that time. They pulled the fridges; there are trays there [mortuary], they pushed those trays out. Remember, there are rats. I was very scared. I used to think I was a strong guy, but I shook, I literally could feel myself shaking the hell out of myself. But then I said a prayer to God: God, I’ve asked you to kill me. If you don’t kill me now, then this won’t kill me, it’ll pass, and take care of my children, because you know how to take care of orphans. At that stage I was ready for anything, and I said, if dead bodies eat, let them swallow me now. But I realised I was talking to things, I was the only living thing there with rats. Yes, they removed the dead bodies and said, ‘You’re joining these if you don’t tell us the truth.’ So you have to tell us where HH’s funding comes from. Why is it that a gentleman called Obasanjo is coming, and at that time Madam Scotland had come the second time into Kabwe. Now, in their thinking, they thought money for funding comes through my account. They searched all my three accounts, the only money they found was K27,000, that was the cash in my lodge account, K27,000,” he recounts.
“They pushed me, you have to tell us to say HH is the one who gave you money which you bought the farms for soldiers in order to kill President Edgar Lungu, it’s HH who gave you money in order to kill Stephen Kampyongo, it’s HH who gave you money in order to kill President Rupiah Banda. I said, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about. So what do you want me to say? You want me to implicate a man who has never sent me to do such a thing? No. That you, you should say HH, Chief Mukuni, are the ones who gave me money to hire soldiers to kill President Edgar Lungu.’ I said, ‘You guys, you know what, put those words in my mouth. If I will be able to produce them on your behalf, you’ll be very lucky, but from my mouth, I’ve shut my mouth. I’ll die if you’re willing to kill me now.’ Because at that stage I asked God, ‘Take care of my children, I’m ready to meet you. Please God, you have delayed to kill me.’ Then I told that gentleman, Col. Simukoko, ‘You’re having a pistol there, you’re delaying to pull the trigger.’ I was beaten mercilessly”.
Mwanakampwe says that from there, he was taken blindfolded to meet president Edgar Lungu.
“In the morning, around 05:00 hours, a different team came, blindfolded me, and guess where they took me, to President Edgar Lungu. He asked me, in Bemba, that the men I sent didn’t tell me that I’m supposed to work with government. I’ll use his exact words: ‘Ulyakapala aba ku Mukobeko takafume, and we cannot allow him to be president, so iwe the best you should do is work with us, and nabakweba ifya ku landa balumendo (The man at Mukobeko will not be released. The best you should do is work with us. The gentlemen have told you what to say). One, he is the one who sent you, he is the one who gave you money. We shall buy you two houses in South Africa if you feel like you’re not comfortable here, we’ll give you everything.’ And surprise, surprise, the names of the most critical family members, they have them, ‘this one, this one, we shall take care of them if they are a burden,’” he recalled.
“I said to President Edgar Lungu, ‘You can kill me because I’ve not done anything wrong. If you want me to work with you, the best you can do is release your brother, because from the bottom of your heart you know your brother is innocent. The only crime he has committed is to compete for presidency in his home country. If you say that is a crime, or maybe it’s a crime, I’m ready to die for it.’ Then he said, ‘Get this dirty out of my face,’ and I’m blindfolded again as a ‘dirty.’ Then I told him, ‘Mr President, you should have been a bit kind to yourself. Did your people tell you that I’m coming from the mortuary? Because as a president, I should not have come from the mortuary straight to meet a king like yourself. You should have allowed me to take a bath’”.
Mwanakampwe says he was later taken to a garage behind police headquarters, where he was tortured and one of his testicles was broken.
“And I’m blindfolded, taken again to a place that I discovered was a garage kind of thing. That was when they took me back the second day; I think it’s located behind Police Service Headquarters, a garage kind of place. There is even a boardroom. I’m taken into that boardroom, then I’m told, ‘Here where you have come, your friends have made confessions already.’ There I find a panel of more than, I think, 20 guys, and I’m told, ‘All your friends have confessed everything, you have to confess.’ Then I asked, ‘What am I confessing?’ and these guys tell me, ‘No, the soldiers that you wanted to kill Edgar Lungu with have confessed that you’re the one who gave them money, it came from President Hakainde Hichilema and Chief Mukuni.
Even Chief Mukuni, we have nabbed him, and he has confessed.’ So I said, ‘That’s okay, if he has confessed, tell him that he is my father, I respect him, but I think what he is talking about maybe he is dreaming.’ Now they tie me upside down, hands in between, they tie you and they put some things on my testicles. One of my testicles was broken by PF police, to date, they broke [one of] my testicles. I’m a bit emotional, but that’s the price of leadership when you give leaders who have to survive by crook. After that, I fainted. They waited, they poured water, and they started beating again,” recalled Mwanakampwe.
“Then they told me, ‘We will stop beating you as soon as you accept to write.’ They write a statement for me, then they say, ‘All we want is a signature here.’ So I say, ‘These hands, you can break them and then use them, I’ll never sign anything.’ Imagine my lawyers are looking for me, they’ve hidden me in that garage and mercilessly tortured me. Then, ultimately, they bring this soldier, who I came to learn was Staff Sergeant Phiri. At that stage, he had also been resuscitated as well. They bring him and they tell him, ‘You, this one had accepted he gave you money.’ So Phiri says, ‘Is that so?
You’re very fair, let him tell you where he gave you money from.’ At that stage I told them, ‘I think you know what, you’re men of the law, but the instructions that you’re carrying here are all illegal.’ Again, that Sergeant was mercilessly beaten, he started hallucinating, and they rushed him to a hospital… Me, I have one ear to date that has completely been impaired. After that torture, they took me to Maina Soko to be stabilised, but look, I’m bleeding from the private parts, I’m bleeding from the ears…”.
After more than three months in jail and several court appearances, he was granted a nolle prosequi.
The family of former President Edgar Lungu has dismissed as fake news reports suggesting that his remains may have been secretly moved to Spain amid ongoing talks with the Zambian government over his burial site.
Family spokesperson Makebi Zulu said the family will not dignify such reports with a response.
Mr. Lungu died in South Africa on June 5, 2025, and issues surrounding his burial site remain unresolved.
Although the Pretoria High Court ordered that his body be repatriated to Zambia for a state funeral, the Lungu family has appealed against the decision, arguing that it disregards the family’s wishes.
Their decision has stalled the repatriation process, even as formal talks with the Zambian government continue.
As of August 20, 2025, Mr. Lungu’s body was still being kept at Two Mountains Burial Services in South Africa.
In a letter to both the family and the Zambian government, the company confirmed that the late President’s remains have been in storage pending resolution of the dispute.
It further cautioned that while the body has been embalmed, extended storage could, over time, lead to certain signs of deterioration.
COMPOUNDS NOW GETTING OVER 10 HOURS OF ELECTRICITY DAILY
RESIDENTS of Kanyama, Mandevu and other low income communities are now getting a minimum of 10 hours of electricity supply per day, Energy minister Makozo Chikote has asserted.
Chikote highlighted government efforts to ensure that vulnerable areas receive fairer access to power amidst ongoing nationwide supply challenges.
He explained that government deliberately structured the power distribution schedule to prioritise densely populated communities, where many residents lack access to alternative energy sources.
The minister said this during a Diamond TV programme, ‘COSTA’ last evening.
According to Chikote, anyone could verify the improvement in electricity supply by simply calling residents in high density, low-income communities for feedback.
“In this same Zambia, you can call anyone from Kanyama, they will tell you. I get feedback. Call and ask them how much power they receive,” said Chikote.
“We need to agree that we have prioritised the less privileged areas where many of our people live and in those places, we are providing the much needed electricity.”
He stated that government is working tirelessly to manage the gap between constrained electricity supply and the demands of everyday people.
The minister also revealed that Zesco is currently facing financial challenges, which limits its ability to export electricity
He added that the government plans to introduce tariffs that reflect the true cost of electricity, aiming to boost the sector’s long-term viability and draw more investors into the energy market.
Chikote also acknowledged that some Zambians may feel the current system is unfair, particularly those in more affluent areas which are receiving fewer hours of power.
However, he maintained that the government’s focus is on protecting those who would be hit hardest by continuous blackouts.
“Citizens may feel cheated, but as government, we are committed to ensuring that we curb this vice,” added Chikote.
ZED FARMER APPEARS FOR MENTION AT KABWE MAGISTRATES COURT
The murder case involving Maria Zaloumis popularly known as Zed Farmer and four others is set to be committed to the High Court for plea on 6th October 2025 in Kabwe.
This comes after Zaloumis appeared before Magistrate Wamundila Liswaniso at the Kabwe Magistrates Court today.
Zaloumis, her partner Nathaniel Barthram, and three farm workers are facing murder charges in connection with the death of 22-year-old Enock Simfukwe Kasengele, who allegedly trespassed onto Zaloumis’ farm armed with acid, reportedly intending to harm her.
A viral video following the incident showed Kasengele allegedly being tortured by some of the accused.
A postmortem report confirmed that his death resulted from injuries sustained during that torture.
The Electricity Chessboard: A Political Gamble for Votes in 2026?
The government’s proclaimed prioritization of power supply to low-income areas, while on the surface a compassionate policy, is a carefully calculated political maneuver. This is not a selfless act of social justice, but a high-stakes gamble on the “electricity chessboard” with the 2026 elections in mind. The moves and counter-moves by the government and ZESCO reveal a narrative that is both contradictory and deeply cynical.
Minister Makozo Chikote’s claim of providing 10 to 12 hours of electricity daily to low-income areas is met with a cold, dark reality on the ground. The lived experience of residents in the compounds tells a very different story. The average Zambian in these areas is often receiving a paltry 3 to 5 hours of power supply a day, if they are lucky. This glaring disconnect between official statements and the reality for the common person is a powerful indictment of the government’s sincerity.
While the government seeks to win favor in the compounds, it has simultaneously increased the burden on residents in medium and high-density areas, who are now facing longer hours of load shedding. This is a classic political “two-edged sword.” The government is attempting to secure a large and influential voting bloc by offering a small concession, while hoping that the frustration of another, more economically stable group will not translate into a significant political backlash.
The government’s continued rhetoric about ZESCO’s financial challenges and the export of power by the Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) to the DRC adds fuel to the fire. The public rightly questions why a nation grappling with a crippling power deficit is still exporting electricity, even if it is through ZESCO’s infrastructure. This seems to be a clear case of prioritizing revenue and foreign obligations over the fundamental needs of its own people.
The people of Zambia are not naive. They are keenly aware of the political machinations at play. They know that a few months of slightly improved power supply before an election is not a solution to a long-term problem. It is a temporary bandage on a deep wound. The promise of long-term energy reforms, including cost-reflective tariffs and new investments, is met with skepticism when the immediate present is marked by an unequal and unpredictable electricity supply.
This situation has exposed the government’s vulnerability. By creating a divide in power supply, it has created a breeding ground for political opposition and public dissent. The public is watching, analyzing the actions of those in power. They are weighing the government’s claims against their daily lived experience of blackouts. They are witnessing how those in power prioritize their political survival over the well-being of the nation.
The government’s current energy policy is a high-stakes gamble for the 2026 elections. It is a bet that the goodwill earned from a short-term, and largely fictional, increase in power supply to low-income areas will outweigh the anger and frustration of all other households. But the people of Zambia are not a monolithic voting bloc to be swayed by a cheap political fix.
They are a nation of individuals whose livelihoods and aspirations are tied to a stable electricity supply. This “two-edged sword” election ploy may not just consume the hands holding it, but may also ignite a fuse of popular discontent that burns brighter than any light bulb, threatening to plunge the entire political landscape into darkness.

SASYDA CONDEMNS UPND’S MOVE TO RESTRICT MEDIA COVERAGE OF ASPIRING CANDIDATES
Lusaka…. Monday September 22, 2025
The Secretary General of the United Party for National Development (UPND), Batuke Imenda, has come under sharp criticism from the President General of the Southern African Students and Youth Development Association (SASYDA) Ibrahim Kabwe Mwamba, following his announcement to restrict media coverage of aspiring candidates within the party.
In a press statement released to Smart Eagles today, Mr. Mwamba described the move as “draconian and akin to North Korea’s style of governance, which has no place in a democratic Zambia.”
He emphasized that the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, assembly, and the press, and that no party official has the authority to dictate media coverage.
“This action seems particularly targeted at young people within the UPND who have challenged long-serving members of parliament, such as Mr. Jack Mwimbu, who has been in office since 2001,” Mr. Mwamba said.
“We urge all young Zambians to freely aspire to public office in the 2026 elections.”
Mr. Mwamba further encouraged youth to consider running as independent candidates if political parties continue to favor older politicians.
“With the numbers on their side, the youth of Zambia have the power to govern the country,” he said.
He concluded by urging Mr. Imenda and the UPND leadership to respect the democratic process and the fundamental human rights enshrined in the Constitution of Zambia.
