Police clash with protesters over Kenyan blogger’s mysterious death in custody

Kenya’s capital was rocked by unrest on Monday as police twice fired tear gas at demonstrators marching toward Nairobi’s Central Police Station. The protests were sparked by the suspicious death of blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody, a case that has ignited national fury and revived memories of past state brutality.

Ojwang, arrested in Homa Bay on Friday, was reportedly detained for sharing what authorities described as “false information” about a senior police officer on social media. He was transported nearly 400 kilometers to Nairobi, where he later died in custody.

Police claim the blogger, Albert Ojwang, “hit his head against the cell wall,” but activists and rights groups have rejected this explanation, calling it deeply suspect.

“Until now they (Kenya Police) have not told us the truth. We know there were more injuries. They have decided to sacrifice junior officers. We want justice for Ojwang and many others who have lost their lives,” said Hussein Khalid of the Vocal Africa human rights group in an AP report.

Ojwang’s death has drawn comparisons to last year’s deadly crackdown during the 2024 finance bill protests, when multiple activists were killed or abducted by police. Though the proposed taxes were eventually scrapped, the economic strain and public discontent remain.

“Our demands are still not met. The joblessness they had last year is tenfold. The killings are still happening,” said Ndungi Githuku of the People’s Liberation Party. “So, nothing was resolved out of the protests that we had. We have freedom that is half baked. This country belongs to the rich, so it is time for the poor to rise. This is what is going to happen (on the anniversary) in a few days.”

Police Inspector-General Douglas Kanja announced that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation. Officers on duty at the time of Ojwang’s death have been suspended pending the outcome.

Still, many remain skeptical of the process and fear a cover-up. Amnesty Kenya issued a statement demanding transparency and accountability, stressing that the IPOA’s findings must be made public and any officers found culpable must face the law.

“We are in an era whereby speaking against the government is a crime, complaining against poor leadership and mismanagement of public affairs is a crime. I pity (Ojwang’s) 5-month-old baby and wife. I am protesting extrajudicial killings — one of us is all of us,” said activist Ouma Paul Oyao.

Calls for justice continue to grow online and on the streets. With tensions rising ahead of the anniversary of last year’s protests, activists are warning of a new wave of mobilization.

“This government is actually urging us to come out in the street again. They are saying they have not repented; they are saying that they will continue abducting and assassinating us. So, what we are saying (is) that it’s better to shout and die than to keep quiet and be gotten from our homes while we are quiet,” Githuku said.

ZELENSKY BEGS US, EU FOR HELP AS RUSSIAN BOMBARDMENT GETS OUT OF HANDS CONTINUOUSLY ACROSS UKRAINE CAN’T KEEP UP WITH.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine is begging the United States (U.S.) and member states of the European Union (E.U.) for help, calling for more international pressure to be placed on Moscow following another night of heavy Russian air attacks on the Ukrainian capital.

“Today is one of the largest attacks on Kiev. Odesa,  Kharkhiv, Dnipro region, and Chernihiv region were also targeted, relentlessly ’’ he wrote on the X platform.

These airstrikes had drowned out all efforts by the U.S. and other countries to achieve peace, he said. Zelensky called on the U.S., Europe “and others around the world who called for an end to the war’’ to take action before it’s too late explaining his country can’t withstand Russia’s constant strikes against the country.

The response to such Russian attacks must not be silence, he said.
There were fires in the capital with a number of buildings destroyed, and there were several injuries, he said.

The port city of Odessa was also hit hard, with two people killed and at least 10 others were injured after a drone strike, Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov wrote on Telegram.

The Ukrainian Air Force says Russia attacked its neighbour with 315 drones and drone dummies, two North Korean ballistic missiles and five cruise missiles.

In the Russian border region of Belgorod, a woman was killed in a Ukrainian drone attack, according to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkovy
There were also reports of injuries.

The Russian Defence Ministry reported that 102 Ukrainian drones were shot down over several Russian territories and the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which was annexed in 2014.

The information provided by the warring parties cannot be independently verified.

According to Russian media reports, one of the targets was a drone factory near the city of Yelabuga in the republic of Tatarstan.

Russia’s aviation authority placed temporary restrictions on take-offs and landings at 13 airports during Monday night and Tuesday morning, including the airports of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

“THE ECL LEGACY WILL LIVE ON,” GIVEN LUBINDA

Pretoria. Tue. June 10, 2025/Smart Eagles

In an emotional speech at the memorial service of late President Lungu in Pretoria,  South Africa this morning, PF Vice President Hon. Given Lubinda expressed pain that despite building roads, ECL was not allowed to jog on them by the current regime.

He said that despite ECL building airports, he was not allowed to fly out to seek medical attention and that despite him building markets, he could not be allowed to go to the market.

Lubinda in near tears lauded ECL for his amazing character that was non reactionary and absolutely resilient.

He said the former President should have been given the dignity and respect he deserved after serving the nation with diligence and passion.

“We waited for the announcement of his death. It did not come from the head of state nor from the government.  It came from his daughter. Why? Hon. Lubinda asked, perturbed.

Hon. Lubinda thanked the late former President ECL for having being a wonderful leader and thanked his wife, Mrs Esther Lungu, for having allowed him to serve the nation.

” We are sorry this has happened, “.he said.

“My dear President,  Friend and Leader, you achieved.

You have gone devoid of hate . Your spirit will flourish. Farewell, my president . The fight has just begun.” He said .

“President Lungu said i tell you to never lose Hope” – Family Spokesperson

“President Lungu said i tell you to never lose Hope” – Family Spokesperson

Tuesday, June 10, 2025

Pretoria, South Africa

In a deeply moving ceremony held in Pretoria this morning, dignitaries, family, friends, and members of the Zambian community gathered to pay tribute to the late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. The occasion was marked by emotion, fond memories, and a central message that echoed throughout the memorial: “Don’t lose hope.”

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Makebi Zulu delivered a heartfelt eulogy that resonated with the legacy of a man remembered not only for his leadership, but for the strength and comfort he offered in life’s most trying moments.

“We are gathered here in remembrance and to honour him,” Mr Zulu began, acknowledging the presence of dignitaries and the community at large. “Our heartfelt appreciation goes to everyone who made this sacred occasion possible.”

One of the most touching moments came as Mr Zulu recalled a Scrabble game shared with the late President and family members. He recounted how the word “hope” became more than just a game answer it became a mantra for President Lungu, and now, a part of his enduring legacy.

“That thing which you never lose is hope,”

Mr. Zulu quoted, recalling the words of the former President during that simple but meaningful moment.

Mr. Zulu also reflected on the many challenges President Lungu faced, including health struggles and the journey from Zambia to South Africa for medical treatment. Despite adversity, the late President remained unwavering in his optimism. “We have always managed,” President Lungu once said, according to Hon. Zulu, in response to concerns about financial and logistical challenges. “Don’t lose hope.”

In an emotional tribute, Mr. Zulu extended gratitude to those who supported the President during his final days. He thanked Dr. Joe and the medical team, family members, and Zambian officials who made the journey possible, despite facing consequences for their actions.

“To those who helped him reach South Africa we know some of you were fired for doing the right thing. But know this: you gave him hope. And for that, we are grateful.”

Mr. Zulu’s speech was punctuated with appreciation for everyone from the President’s caregivers to his political allies, naming several by name, including former diplomatats.

As the ceremony concluded, Mr. Zulu reminded all in attendance that President Edgar Chagwa Lungu lives on through the values he embodied chief among them, hope.

“Let the Zambians know that there is still hope,” he said.

“And President Edgar Chagwa Lungu thanks them for giving him an opportunity to serve. But still says to them: that thing which you never lose is hope. Let’s not lose hope.”

The tribute was not only a remembrance of a man but a rallying call to the nation to carry forward his enduring message one that continues to inspire long after his passing.

Denied Access 3 Times to a Facility You Built Lord, Why?

Pretoria, South Africa – June 10, 2025

Acting Patriotic Front President Hon. Given Lubinda this afternoon delivered a raw  impassioned eulogy that left the congregation visibly moved.

Fighting tears, Hon. Lubinda questioned the silence and perceived neglect that surrounded President Lungu’s passing especially the repeated denial of medical attention at a facility President Lungu himself helped establish during his time in office.

“Denied access three times to a facility you built Lord, why?” Hon. Lubinda cried.

“Why was he not allowed to seek critical attention? Why?”

Hon. Lubinda condemned the delays and lack of official communication from the government regarding President Lungu’s death. He pointed out that, unlike previous presidents whose deaths were announced promptly and officially, news of President Lungu’s passing was initially left to his daughter, Hon. Tasila Lungu Mwansa, to confirm.

“We waited from 9 until 15:30 for the rumor to be confirmed. And it wasn’t by the incumbent president. It wasn’t by a senior government official. It was by his daughter. Why?” he asked.

Hon. Lubinda also drew attention to President Lungu’s treatment after leaving office, recalling how his home was once surrounded by police, and his gate broken down by officers who once saluted him as Head of State.

“Everything was done to him. He did not fight back. That man! God, thank you for giving us him,” he said.

“If we cannot learn from a man like President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, we run the risk of learning from lesser people.”

The acting PF president made an emotional appeal to the nation and its leadership to honor President Lungu’s final wishes and uphold the dignity he was denied in life and, now, in death.

“Please, I beg you give him the dignity he asked for. He does not deserve to be denied even in death.”

Hon. Lubinda’s eulogy, marked by questions of justice, dignity, and reconciliation, ended with a call for national unity in honoring a man he described as resilient, humble, and devoted to Zambia.

“Those who loved him in life honor him by loving one another. And those who failed him, let this be a moment of reflection. He ran his race, and he ran it well.”

The Zambian diaspora expressed solidarity, with many agreeing that President Lungu’s legacy must be respected and his memory preserved with dignity and fairness.

President Lungu served as Zambia’s sixth president from 2015 to 2021. His contributions to infrastructure, health, and regional diplomacy remain a significant part of Zambia’s recent history.

His Excellency Amb. George Twala, former South African High Commissioner accredited to the Republic of Zambia ( 2019-2023) gave a moving and insightful Tribute

Edgar Lungu was doing very fine, he was doing well when I met him on 17th May 2025- Amb. George Twala

I had an opportunity to meet President Edgar Lungu when I accompanied Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa for his interview.

I had a rare opportunity to take the pictures during their interview. I’ve learnt that those were the first public pictures since Janyary 2025 and probably the last.

President Lungu said, Dr. Sishuwa was his fiecest critic but had turned out to be his good friend.

He said Dr. Sishuwa was doing to his succesor what he did to him. He said: “I’ve learnt that Dr. Sishuwa speaks for the country, speaks for the people and that Dr. Sishuwa loves Zambia just as much, if not more than, those that rule it.”

President Lungu said, on reflection, a leader must listen more to his critics than he listens to his praise singers.

“I wish when I occupied the office, I should have listened more to my critics, than I had listened to others.”

He also bemoaned that Zambia’s foreign policy in recent years had veered more to the West and its footing could no longer be remembered as anchored in pan-africanism.

He hoped that future leaders will restore Zambia’s strong pan-african stance.

I found that these were raw reflections of a man, who walked the path of power, who remained a patriot to the end.

I must say he credited his family as a cornerstone of his life. He expressed this with deep passion recognizing how resolute and steadfast his wife, the former First Lady, Mama Esther Lungu, the children were to him.

He described them as the honour of his life.

In those moments I didnt see a politician, but I saw a father, a husband, a believer, a humble   man with a rare task and privilege to lead the country.

A TRIBUTE TO MY HEROE AND MENTOR , HIS EXCELLENCY PRESIDENT DR EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU

A TRIBUTE TO MY HEROE AND MENTOR , HIS EXCELLENCY PRESIDENT DR EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU.

By PF  MCC Nathan Chanda Bwalya

H.E Dr. Edger Chagwa Lungu my Heroe and mentor gone at time when needed the most!

It is with profound sorrow and pain that l join the Lungu family,  the rest of the country and the PF family in mourning the passing of our Sixth Republican President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who has died in South Africa.

The pain of losing a personal friend and political ally who loved so much is anguishing and beyond one’s comprehension.

I had the honour and privilege of serving closely with President Lungu during his presidency, particularly as Mayor of Luanshya and Chairperson of one of the most important  Provinces in the country Copperbelt at a tender age.

I came to know President Lungu officially through late President His Excellency Michael Chilufya Sata may his soul rest in eternal peace at kabelenga Presidential guest house in Ndola. When he introduced me to him saying “this young man Nathan Chanda has done alot for this party and we need to do something for him. I was suppose to appoint him Deputy Minister but bring him to Lusaka we see what we can for him.”  By then Dr Lungu Minster of  Justice and Defence and  Secretary General of PF party,

We tried to meet President Sata but because of unforseen occurrence just after weeks we lost him and that how Dr Lungu assumed the Presidency of PF later been elected Republican President. Thats how we started working together very closely by then l was just Provincial Youth Chairperson Copperbelt.

President Lungu has an accomplished lawyer was wise, an intelligent and generous leader who carried himself with humility. His down to earth and listening attitude made him more acceptable and loved by many of our people.

Because of my royalty, hardwork, courage, disciplined,  honest, commitment and dedication to duty gained me favour and love.

He was more than a parent and became my biggest supporter , counselor, defender and mentor whom l used confined in .

We have lost an asset stateman, a gallant man, a unifier who used to bring people together with Mr Sata’s spirit of ubuntu, love and forgiveness. He taught me to rise above the challenge, above petty differences and act in the best interest of party as Provincial Chairman and the district of Luanshya our country at large as Mayor.

He also gave me an opportunity of serving as  youngst member of the Central Committee which l will for ever be great full and cherish.

As we mourn our beloved leader as a country we must unite and show love for one another. We owe it to President Lungu who has left a big gap, to his memory and to the dream he never stopped believing in a modern, industrialised peaceful and united Zambia of justice, equity, and shared prosperity. Where people live in harmony honouring the supremacy and faithfulness of the Almighty God , through whose providentail goodness we remain a Christian nation under the motto of One Zambia One Nation

My deepest  thoughts, sympathy, prayers and heartfelt condolences are with Mrs Esther Lungu, Children, the bereaved family, friends, the Tonse/PF family and indeed the entire nation.

This is a big loss and impact of your loss and my relationship can not be articulated with mere words but who are we for  indeed death is a mystery.

We thank God almighty who gave President Edgar Chagwa Lungu to us as a gift. For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven, a time to be born, and a time to die.

You are gone but your  legacy lives aluta continua!

May the soul of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu rest in eternal peace.

Healing Requires Truth: Confronting the Injustices Against Former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu

Mr. President, You Failed Your Brother. You Drove Him to His Grave.

Mr. President,

Zambia stands wounded.

Not only by the death of a former Head of State, but also by the chilling silence that surrounded the slow, public erosion of his dignity. We mourn the passing of our sixth President, His Excellency Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu. But mourning alone will not suffice. Healing cannot begin until we, as a nation, find the courage to speak the truth, no matter how uncomfortable or politically inconvenient.

Mr. President, this is the truth.

You did not simply fail your predecessor.
You mistreated your brother until the very end.
You broke him systematically, publicly, and with frightening persistence.

What the late President Lungu endured in his final years was not the result of political rivalry or ideological difference. It was cruelty: deliberate, targeted, and inhumane.

Where he should have found rest and reflection, he found torment.
Where he should have been honored, he was humiliated.
Where he should have been protected, he was pursued.

And the most heart-wrenching and disgraceful act of all was that you denied him the opportunity to travel to South Africa for a critical medical review, not once, not twice, but three times. Let that truth settle for a moment.

How can a fellow human being, let alone a former President of the Republic of Zambia, be denied access to the healthcare he needed? What kind of leadership sees vulnerability and responds with vindictiveness? Denying a man the right to seek medical treatment is not merely a political decision. It is an inhumane act.

Yet you did not stop there.

You completed the humiliation when you stripped him of his security detail, exposing a former Commander-in-Chief to the very dangers your office is mandated to shield him from.

Why, Mr. President?
Why would you deliberately leave a man who once held the reins of our national defense vulnerable and unprotected?
What threat did Edgar Chagwa Lungu pose to you that justified violating the constitutional protections owed to a former Head of State?

This was not a security adjustment. It was a calculated act of degradation, a political punishment meant to diminish him publicly and psychologically. And you, Mr. President, allowed it through deliberate silence.

Zambians have not forgotten the images of Dr. Lungu being harassed while jogging. The surveillance. The media attacks by state-aligned platforms. The whispers and slander designed to chip away at his legacy. The cloud of legal threats that hung over him. A campaign of persecution that drove him into political exile within his own country.

Let us say it without fear.
You mistreated him to the grave.
His death was not merely a medical event. It was the culmination of sustained psychological warfare. He died not only with illness in his body, but with pain in his heart—pain inflicted by the very government that should have treated him with honor.

To those now speaking out, do not be afraid.
You are not traitors.
You are patriots.
You are truth-tellers.
And Zambia needs you now more than ever.

We must build a nation where justice is not selective, where leadership is not a license for revenge, and where those who have served, even if flawed, are treated with the human dignity every Zambian deserves.

Mr. President, this moment will follow you for the rest of your life and into history.
You failed Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
You failed the sacred brotherhood of leadership.
You failed the millions who believed your promise to unite, not divide.

Now he is gone.
A man of resilience.
A statesman.
A husband.
A father.
Silenced by a hostile political system. And yet, in death, his silence roars louder than the voices that tried to bury his truth.

Let this be a turning point, Mr. President, not just for you but for Zambia.
Let this be the last time that power is used as a weapon against a fellow citizen.
Let it be the final time a leader is punished simply for existing.

Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu deserved better.
Zambia deserved better.

And to you, Mr. President, history will remember.
It will remember how you treated your brother.

It will remember how you wielded power.
And it will remember that, in the end, you drove a former President to his grave not with violence, but with sustained cruelty and political indifference.

Let us rise from this darkness, not with vengeance but with courage.
Let us speak.
Let us mourn.
Let us never forget.

May his memory ignite the conscience of a nation and compel us never again to mistake power for purpose.

Sincerely,
Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

A Grieving and Awakened Zambian

A Plea for Sobriety

RAPHAEL NAKACHINDA’S BAIL SHOULD BE REVOKED

RAPHAEL NAKACHINDA’S BAIL SHOULD BE REVOKED

I am appealing to the government of Zambia to take serious interest in Raphael Nakachinda’s claims that former President Edgar Lungu was poisoned. Given that Nakachinda has been closely associated with the former president, such statements should be treated with the seriousness they deserve.

Nakachinda has gone further to make seditious remarks while in South Africa. President Lungu was visited during his stay there by high-profile leaders, including the current President of South Africa, the former president, and other dignitaries. So, at what point exactly was President Lungu poisoned?

If Nakachinda cannot substantiate these claims, then the courts should consider revoking his pending bail. He was previously arrested, tried, and convicted for seditious behavior and now he is repeating the same conduct. Has he learned any lesson? Is he remorseful? Absolutely not.

President Edgar Lungu is receiving state privileges as a former head of state not as a member of PF, the Tonse Alliance, or UKA. Therefore, individuals like Mr. Nakachinda,Sean Tembo and Mr. Lubinda should act responsibly. Making such inflammatory and unverified statements only serves to incite unrest and undermine national unity.

We had hoped that after losing power, the PF would reflect on its past arrogance and governance failures. But with every passing day, some of its members continue to prove to the nation that they were never suited for National leadership.

Under the PF administration, the kind of drama you’re displaying today would have landed many of you behind bars or worse, cost lives. We witnessed how the PF regime gunned down innocent citizens, including Mapenzi Chibulo, Vespers Shimuzhila, Nsama Nsama, Joseph Kaunda, and many others. When these citizens were killed in cold blood Mr. Given Lubinda was the justice Minister, Mr. Nakachinda was a minister and the duo didn’t do anything to save the victims. Whilst Mr. Nakachinda and Mr. Lubinda were senior government officials, the PF administration managed to hide the killer of Lawrence Banda.

If this were still your time, that Secretariat would have been shut down without hesitation. And yet, today, you have the audacity to treat President Hakainde Hichilema with disrespect, as though he were a fool.

PF, you are the last group that should speak on issues of justice. Your record speaks for itself you committed unspeakable acts in this country. However, this is a time of mourning. If you wish to play politics, at least wait until we have laid President Lungu to rest.Afterwards, we will respond case by case, with facts and evidence.

President Hakainde Hichilema has acted responsibly and respectfully by declaring national mourning for his predecessor. That should be commended.

Let me also remind those who are overly zealous—there will be no room for lawlessness. If anyone intends to cause disorder during the funeral procession, be prepared to watch it from behind bars. Let President Lungu be mourned with the dignity and honor of befitting a former president of the Republic.

ZAMBIA TWASEBANA – M’MEMBE

…as he calls for moral reawakening in governance

Lusaka…Tuesday June 10, 2025 – Socialist Party (SP) President Dr. Fred M’membe has called out the UPND government, accusing it of hypocrisy, arrogance, and a lack of accountability.

In a statement, Dr. M’membe expressed deep concern over a troubling pattern of governance under President Hakainde Hichilema.

Dr. M’membe said one of Zambia’s biggest challenges today is the hypocrisy embedded in the current government.

He lamented that this hypocrisy was often accompanied by arrogance and pride, creating an environment in which dissenting voices were silenced or dismissed.

According to the opposition leader, President Hichilema and his inner circle appeared to believe they were the only ones capable of rational thought or leadership.

He contended that others were expected to remain passive and silent, as though unaware of the challenges currently facing the nation.

Dr. M’membe accused the UPND leadership of engaging in acts he described as illogical and harmful, while simultaneously portraying themselves as victims.

He stated that the administration had fostered a political culture characterized not by accountability, but by lies, manipulation, deflection, and denial.

Even when faced with public criticism, Dr. M’membe emphasized that the government tended to deflect blame rather than respond with empathy, explanation, or apology.

He described this behavior as politically immature and damaging to the integrity of Zambia’s democracy.

Expressing disappointment, Dr. M’membe remarked that it was a tragedy for a hopeful nation like Zambia to be led by individuals who lacked basic human compassion and humility.

He warned that the leadership had become dangerously disconnected from the values of justice and truth.

Calling for change, Dr. M’membe appealed for “conscience leadership.”

He urged for the emergence of leaders who would act with compassion rather than cruelty and prioritize humility over what he described as excessive pride.

Meanwhile, Dr. M’membe called on divine intervention, praying that Zambia might be blessed with leaders who truly understand the weight of their responsibilities and lead with integrity.

GOVERNMENT DENIES TRAVEL BAN ALLEGATIONS ON LATE PRESIDENT LUNGU, SAYS PRESIDENT HICHILEMA HELD NO GRUDGE

GOVERNMENT DENIES TRAVEL BAN ALLEGATIONS ON LATE PRESIDENT LUNGU, SAYS PRESIDENT HICHILEMA HELD NO GRUDGE

MOMBASA, KENYA – June 9, 2025

The Government of the Republic of Zambia has dismissed allegations that it imposed a travel ban on the late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu prior to his death in South Africa, clarifying that no such restriction was ever in place.

Speaking during a media engagement on Monday evening in Mombasa, Kenya, Chief Government Spokesperson and Minister of Information and Media, Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa, categorically refuted the claims, branding them as false and misleading.

“At no time did the Government place a travel ban on the late former President Edgar Lungu,” said Mweetwa. “These allegations are not only unfounded but are intended to mislead the public and politicize a solemn moment.”

Mweetwa further clarified that President Hakainde Hichilema had no personal grudge against his predecessor, contrary to widespread speculation by some Patriotic Front (PF) members.

“President HH holds no grudge against the late former President Edgar Lungu. On the contrary, he has maintained the dignity of the office and shown utmost respect to the former head of state,” Mweetwa affirmed.

Addressing additional accusations that the government had stripped the late President of his benefits, Mweetwa cited Chapter 15, Section 5 of the Laws of Zambia, which provides that a former president who re-enters active politics forfeits the benefits accorded to retired heads of state.

“When the late President Lungu announced his return to active politics, the law took its course,” Mweetwa explained. “It is not a matter of political persecution but of legal procedure.”

He also emphasized that President Hichilema has not interfered with or lifted the immunity of his predecessor, marking a departure from precedents set by previous administrations.

“President Hichilema is the first serving President of Zambia who has not lifted or tampered with the immunity of a former president,” he said. “It is grossly unfortunate that some leaders can lie through their teeth about the Government withdrawing the late President’s entitlements.”

Mweetwa concluded by dismissing ongoing speculation suggesting that former President Lungu died from suspected poisoning. He urged the media and public to disregard such claims being peddled by some opposition figures, labeling them as “irresponsible and insensitive.”

The government has since called for calm and unity during this period of national mourning, warning against politicizing the passing of a former head of state.

Lungu is the first former president who had his immunity not tempered with or lifted

Today, the Minister of Information and Media and Chief Government Spokesperson Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa MP held a press briefing on Government position concerning the death of the former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu

Below are the highlights:

✅ Government is actively engaging with the family of the late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu in order to ensure that protocols and actions to be taken are in line and in sync with that of family.

✅ This is to ensure that the late President gets a befitting and dignified send-off.

✅ It is  regrettable that some leaders in the Patriotic Front are turning the funeral into a political fiesta making it a platform for political squabbles and finger pointing.

✅ The Patriotic Front leaders are using the death of the former President as a political springboard in order to gain political relevance.

✅ Having done or not done one or the other thing is now not the right thing to do adding that all responsible leaders presently are called to provide leadership to the country in line with our established norms and practices as a christian nation.

ALLEGATIONS THAT FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU WOULD NOT HAVE DIED IF HE WAS NOT DELAYED TO BE EVACUATED FOR MEDICAL ATTENTION ABROAD

✅ Indicated that  at no time did Government  place a travel moratorium or ban on former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

✅ It is an absurdity that the Patriotic Front can admit that the former President was having a medical condition for a while yet when Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana indicated to the nation that he was aware that the former President had a condition and that he was undergoing chemotherapy, legal process were planned against him.

ALLEGATIONS THAT GOVERNMENT WITHDREW ENTITLEMENTS FOR THE FORMER PRESIDENT

✅ Indicated that at no time did Government withdraw any entitlements that were properly accruing to  the late former President Edgar Lungu.

✅  Noted that it is grossly unfortunate that some leaders can lie  through their teeth about Government withdrawing entitlements of the late former President Edgar Lungu.

✅ Stated that when former President Edgar Lungu decided to retire from active politics,he put in writing to the Secretary to Cabinet indicating that particular move and from that date therefore the benefits and entitlements that the law confers to him were given to him.

✅ However, according to chapter 15 section 5 of the laws of zambia which stipulates that a former president who retires from active politics and decides to come back to active politics will have their benefits accruing to them as former head of the republic of  Zambia be forfeited.

✅ In this regard, the former President enjoyed all the benefits until the time he decided to go back to active politics at the insistence of some of his supporters within the Patriotic Front.

✅ It  is at that time that the law kicked in to withdraw those entitlements that the law confers to a former president.

✅The Former late  President is the first former president who had his immunity not tempered with or lifted.

✅  In this regard, President Hakainde Hichilema is the first serving President of Zambia not to lift the immunity or remove the presidential immunity of his predecessor.

✅ Meanwhile. the Minister indicated that allegations of possible poisoning without prejudice to possible findings has got nothing to do whatsoever with the government of the Republic of Zambia.

✅ Dismissed allegations that Zambian authorities and or agents stormed the medical facility in South Africa demanding to repatriate the body of former President Edgar Lungu.

✅ Indicated that if such an occurrence took place, Government is not aware and did not give blessings to anyone.

✅ Allegations by the Patriotic Front are highly misplaced and misrepresenting the true Zambian way of handling grievances.

✅ The Minister has since encouraged local and international media not to take a number of what leaders from the PF are saying as the actual  truth.

✅ We cannot therefore, entertain a situation where statements are made in order to promote anarchy in the nation.

✅ The Chief Government Spokesperson has since called upon all citizens to remain calm and give former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu a befitting dignified send-off.

WHY HAS THE LUNGU FAMILY ALLOWED PF MEMBERS TO DISRESPECT HIM IN HIS DEATH??

WHY HAS THE LUNGU FAMILY ALLOWED PF MEMBERS TO DISRESPECT HIM IN HIS DEATH??

When Levy Mwanawasa died, Hon Jazzman Chikwakwa and Leslie Mbula as family elders took charge of the funeral and any public engagements. There was order.

When FTJ died, Hon BY Mwila, as  the Uncle took charge, there was order and When Michael C Sata died, his Uncle Hon AB Chikwanda took charge, and there was order.

When KK died, his eldest son Amb Panji Kaunda took charge, and there was order while James Banda senior, the young brother to President Rupiah Banda took charge when RB died and there was order.

Now, today, we have a serious power vacuum. No central command center. All and sundry are an authority on their own. Too many spokespersons. No elders to take charge, what have we seen total disorder.

HAIMBE CONDEMNS CRITICISM OF GOVERNMENT OVER ECL’S DEATH AS MORALLY WRONG AND DIVISIVE

HAIMBE CONDEMNS CRITICISM OF GOVERNMENT OVER ECL’S DEATH AS MORALLY WRONG AND DIVISIVE

By: Sun FM TV Reporter

Foreign Affairs Minister Malambo Haimbe has slammed all criticism questioning the government’s role in the passing of former President Edgar Lungu, describing such inquiries as morally inappropriate and divisive.

Speaking on Diamond TV’s Costa programme, Mr. Haimbe emphasized that this is not a time for finger-pointing or speculation, but rather a moment for unity.
He stated that it is improper to engage in discussions about whether the government provided sufficient support to Lungu during his illness, insisting that such matters should only be addressed at a later time.

He stressed that, for now, the government’s priority is the official mourning period.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that President Lungu receives a dignified and respectful burial.

He expressed deep sorrow over the loss and cautioned against politicizing the situation, warning that it would only deepen national wounds.

Mr. Haimbe further emphasized that the focus must remain on unity, not controversy, as division during this period could jeopardize the peace and harmony needed most at this time.

Produce “Why Me”

State House rogue media led by Koswe and affiliated media such as CIC and Kalemba, have in the last few days been giving detailed accounts of how Francis Kapwepwe also known as “Why Me”, was lured and abducted from Harare or Chirundu last week and how the Zambia Police have his phones and how he is confessing about his sponsors.

The notorious team from Zambia Police Service Headquarters Criminal Investigations Department is said to have abducted Why Me last week.

But in interview with Mufken Radio Station, Zambia Police Service Spokesperson,  Rae Hamoonga has expressed ignorance about the operation or the capture of Why Me.

This is after information emerged that Why Me may have died after succumbing to serious inquires arising from beatings and extensive torture.

Those that live with Why Me in Harare Confirmed the abduction and that international and diplomatic procedures for his extradition were not followed. This was yet another abduction like they attempted to extradite former Petauke Central Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Jay Banda from Harare.

This matter is so serious that it’s imperative that the Zambia Police comes out clean, makes full disclosure and produces Why Me.

Remember the biggest crime is usually, not the actual crime, but the subsequent cover up…they say don’t move the bodies from the crime scene.

Whatever case the Zambia Police are investigating against Why Me, they have no right to torture him or take his life.

Further tt’s not the official duty of Mr. Rae Hamoonga to participate in a cover-up or shield or distance the officers involved in the operation that could have turned into a criminal undertaking.

Japheni Mwakalombe Slams Thomas Sipalo: “Your Agenda Is Exposed and Shameful”

Japheni Mwakalombe Slams Thomas Sipalo: “Your Agenda Is Exposed and Shameful”

Former Copperbelt Minister and senior Patriotic Front (PF) official, Ambassador Japheni Mwakalombe, has launched a scathing attack on comedian-turned-social commentator Thomas Sipalo, accusing him of exploiting the national mourning of the late President Edgar Chagwa Lungu for political gain.

In a blistering statement issued Monday evening, Ambassador Mwakalombe did not mince his words, branding Sipalo’s recent comments on sanitation concerns at the PF Secretariat as “reckless, opportunistic, and clearly choreographed to serve political masters.”

“This is not public health advocacy it is veiled sabotage,” charged Mwakalombe. “Mr. Sipalo has shamelessly chosen to politicize a sacred moment. The question must be asked: whose script is he reading from?”

Sipalo had earlier taken to social media, raising alarm over poor sanitation and calling for the temporary closure of the PF Secretariat amid the surge of mourners visiting to pay their respects. His remarks, however, have drawn fury from the PF leadership, who view them as an attack on their dignity during a time of collective sorrow.

Mwakalombe accused Sipalo of “virtue-signaling” and attempting to scandalize the Secretariat without offering any constructive input.

“Where was his concern when he could have helped by donating mobile toilets or offering logistical support?” asked Mwakalombe. “His concern is not with the people it is with pleasing his political sponsors.”

The former minister further warned that calls to close the Secretariat, echoed by some online platforms such as Koswe, are part of a broader campaign to “delegitimize and suppress public mourning.”

“These are not genuine mourners,” Mwakalombe said. “They are mouthpieces for a government narrative desperate to silence the will of the people.”

He also declared that the PF Secretariat will remain “the political and spiritual heart” of the mourning process, stating bluntly:

“Let it be known: we will not surrender sacred ground to veiled threats masked as concern.”

Mwakalombe urged mourners to remain focused and “unmoved by the noise,” calling for unity and continued respect for the memory of former President Lungu.

“Respect is not given lightly, it is earned. And in his passing, President Edgar Chagwa Lungu deserves nothing less than the unwavering solidarity of the people he served.”

OMCAZ CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT AUDIT OF $800 MILLION FUEL DEBT ACCRUED UNDER PF

OMCAZ CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT AUDIT OF $800 MILLION FUEL DEBT ACCRUED UNDER PF

The Oil Marketing Companies Association of Zambia-OMCAZ has called for an independent audit into the $800 million debt owed to Oil Marketing Companies to verify its authenticity.

OMCAZ president, Dr. Kafula Mubanga, states that parts of the debt appear questionable and require thorough scrutiny, proposing that the audit should involve the Zambia Revenue Authority-ZRA to verify the quantity of fuel imported, while Indeni and the Ministry of Energy should confirm the actual amount of fuel consumed.

Dr. Mubanga reveals that some of the fuel under scrutiny entered the country as bonded pron arrangement that exempted it from certain taxes, which he says, should not have been the case during the review period between 2019 and 2021.

He has also raised concerns about whether this fuel was ever received by TAZAMA, noting that the debt, originally contracted under the previous Patriotic Front-PF administration, stood at a principal of $250 million and has ballooned to over $800 million due to penalties and interests.

Dr. Mubanga has emphasized that no independent audit has yet been conducted to verify the legitimacy of the debt while acknowledging ongoing negotiations between the government and Oil Marketing Companies, most of which are multinational firms.

SIAVONGA TOWN COUNCIL AUDITOR UNBOTHERED AS K400,000 LEAVES COUNCIL ACCOUNT WITHOUT PROCEDURE

SIAVONGA TOWN COUNCIL AUDITOR UNBOTHERED AS K400,000 LEAVES COUNCIL ACCOUNT WITHOUT PROCEDURE

The Siavonga Town Council has landed itself in a boiling pot of financial stew after K400,000 waltzed out of the council account, allegedly for a water project  though the only thing flowing seems to be excuses.

As for procedures? Those were apparently left behind like unpaid electricity bills.

The internal auditor, who, when brought before the Parliamentary Committee on Local Government Accounts , arrived not with answers, but with the calmness of someone attending a spa appointment.

Rocking a sunshine-yellow jacket that screamed “positivity over paperwork,” she left MPs more stunned than a Zesco customer after 12 hours of load-shedding only to receive a full bill.

“I didn’t question the spending,” she said with the urgency of a snail on vacation.“The damage was already done.”And what about reporting to her supervisors? “No, I didn’t.

Despite witnessing other councils get grilled like roadside goat meat chopped, flipped, and seasoned with questions  the Siavonga team waltzed into the PAC hearing with no documents, no shame, and no sense of panic.

One might think they were attending a family gathering, not a parliamentary probe. And just when the room thought it couldn’t get more absurd, they presented receipts dated 6 June 2025 a full trip into the future  to explain spending that supposedly happened years ago.

Either someone has access to a time machine or the council’s new procurement system runs on science fiction.

So while taxpayers scratch their heads, wondering whether their money funded a phantom water project or just evaporated, the Siavonga auditor sits serenely, watching it all unfold unbothered, unprepared, and utterly unfazed. After all, it’s just another Tuesday in local government finance.

RESPONSE TO THE STATEMENT BY HON. JACK J. MWIIMBU, MINISTER OF HOME AFFAIRS AND INTERNAL SECURITY

RESPONSE TO THE STATEMENT BY HON. JACK J. MWIIMBU, MINISTER OF HOME AFFAIRS AND INTERNAL SECURITY
LUSAKA, 9 JUNE 2025

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

It is with a deep sense of disappointment and dismay that I respond to the press statement issued by the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Hon. Jack J. Mwiimbu, regarding the passing of our late former President, His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu

While the words of mourning and unity may appear noble on paper, they are nothing but a hollow display of hypocrisy coming from a government and a minister who stood by in silence, or worse, in complicity, as our former Head of State was subjected to humiliation, harassment, and total disregard.

Mr. Mwiimbu, where was your conscience when cadres, under the protection of your police, insulted and mocked President Lungu as he escorted his wife, Madam Esther Lungu, to the Drug Enforcement Commission? You said nothing. You did nothing. Your silence was deafening. Under your ministry, law enforcement officers stood idly by as the dignity of a former President was desecrated.

Where was your honour when one of your police officers chased former President Lungu from a Catholic bishop’s office in Kabwe during a peaceful and respectful courtesy call? That moment was not merely an insult; it was a calculated effort to publicly shame a man who once held the highest office in our land. And yet today, you speak to the nation about honour and respect.

Let us not forget that the cruelty went even deeper.

Your government denied President Lungu permission to travel for his routine medical reviews in South Africa. Not once. Not twice. But on three separate occasions. These were not leisure trips. They were essential medical visits. To deny a former Head of State access to medical care, fully aware of the consequences, was not only cruel—it was inhumane. How heartless must one be to place politics above someone’s health and well-being?

And now, you ask the nation to mourn with you.

Mr. Mwiimbu, it was under your leadership that President Lungu became the target of relentless political vengeance. He was hounded, monitored, restricted, insulted, and dehumanized. Even his right to move freely in the country he once led was turned into a political battleground. What he endured was state-sponsored persecution, and your ministry was at the centre of it.

Perhaps most disturbingly of all, you stripped him of his security. A man who once served as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces was left to walk without protection like an ordinary citizen. You deliberately exposed him to danger, despite knowing the risks. You failed to accord him the security, respect, and recognition that every former Head of State rightfully deserves.

Today, you speak of love, compassion, and unity. But where were these values when they truly mattered—when President Lungu was alive and being publicly ridiculed? You now speak of national healing, but healing does not begin with polished press statements. Healing begins with truth, accountability, and justice.

The UPND government failed to take care of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. That is an undeniable fact. You failed to protect him. You failed to respect him. You failed to honour him. Now, in his death, you attempt to wrap yourselves in the language of unity and virtue.

Let it be clear: we will not allow the memory of President Lungu to be rewritten by those who disrespected and persecuted him in life. His legacy is not yours to sanitize. His suffering is not yours to erase.

Today, we mourn, but not in silence. We mourn with voices lifted in truth and with the moral clarity that this nation so urgently needs. The people of Zambia must know what was done to him, and history must never forget.

Let us honour President Edgar Chagwa Lungu not only in death, but in truth.

Police in Kenya suspended over the death of a man in custody for online post

0

The head of a police station in Kenya and all officers who were on duty when a man who had been detained for “false publication” died in custody have been suspended by the nation’s police chief.

The man in custody, Albert Ojwang was arrested for a post on X in the western town of Homa Bay and then driven 350km (220 miles) to the capital, Nairobi, said his father Meshack Opiyo to journalists.

“While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against a cell wall,” a police statement said.

He was rushed to hospital “where he was reportedly pronounced dead on arrival”.

Rights group Amnesty International’s director in Kenya said the death of Mr Ojwang was “very suspicious”.

In a statement about the death of the young man, Amnesty described him as a teacher and blogger, and the situation “raises serious questions that must be urgently, thoroughly, and independently investigated”.

Senior police officer Stephen Okal is quoted saying what happened in the cell was “an attempted suicide” by the Star newspaper.

For now, it remains unclear what the charge of “false publication” referred to, yet Mr Opiyo told online outlet Citizen Digital that the police officer said “Albert had insulted a senior person on X.”

A statement released by the police stated that officers were suspended to allow Kenya’s independent oversight body to conduct an “impartial investigation”.

The event is scheduled for Sunday, July 13, at MetLife Stadium, in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It would be the first-ever halftime show in a FIFA competition.

Sources say the show is produced in collaboration with the non-profit Global Citizen and will support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which aims to raise $100 million to support education efforts for children.

The FIFA Club World Cup would start June 14 at venues across the United States.

Doja Cat released her Scarlet album in 2023 and also performed at the Academy Awards ceremony. Tems, on the other hand, released her debut album, Born in the Wild, last year.

Prior to this, her inspiring single Me & U attained Gold certification in Switzerland after selling more than 15,000 digital copies.

Before this new milestone, Me & You, released on October 5, 2023, was ranked Most Inspirational Song At 2024 BET and also grabbed the Best Gospel/Inspirational award.

Me & U is described as a song that delves into the depths of self-discovery. Applying her translucent voice, the rendition has resonated with audiences worldwide.

The tune reached No. 34 on the UK singles chart and was also featured on former US President Obama’s 2023 playlist.

British soldier accused of rape in Kenya reportedly transferred back to UK

ABritish soldier who allegedly raped a woman close to a controversial army camp in Kenya has been transferred back to the UK, as investigations into the incident continue.

The alleged sexual assault unfolded back in May near the British Army Training Unit Kenya (Batuk) near the town of Nanyuki, 200km (125 miles) north of the capital, Nairobi, per the BBC.

The soldier in question was arrested and interrogated after the alleged incident, which occurred following a group of soldiers visiting a bar in the community.

UK police say an investigation is being carried out by the Defence Serious Crime Unit, which looks into crimes allegedly committed by British service personnel in the UK and overseas.

A statement also put out by the UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that a “service person” in Kenya had been arrested.

“Unacceptable and criminal behaviour has absolutely no place in our Armed Forces and any reporting of a serious crime by serving personnel is investigated independently from their chain of command,” the MoD said.

The alleged rape involving a soldier from the British base in Kenya comes after previous allegations that a soldier in Kenya played a part in the murder of a local woman back in 2012.

The local woman, Agnes Wanjiru, was 21 and a mother of one and was discovered in a septic tank near the Batuk base three weeks after she disappeared.

This discovery was allegedly made after she spent the evening with British soldiers.

According to the UK-based Sunday Times newspaper, in 2021, a British soldier was believed to have committed the murder.

Since then, the MoD revealed it was cooperating with a Kenyan investigation into the incident.

It was back in 1964 that the Batuk base was established, shortly after Kenya gained independence from the UK.

The UK military has an agreement with Kenya to deploy up to six army battalions a year for training periods at the site.

However, the conduct of some UK personnel at the camp is one that has had the British army facing a string of allegations.

A public inquiry set up by Kenyan MPs in 2024 heard details of the alleged mistreatment of local people by these British soldiers.

South Africa secures R26.5 billion World Bank loan to boost infrastructure

South Africa secures R26.5 billion World Bank loan to boost infrastructure

South Africa has secured a R26.5 billion loan from the World Bank. The funding aims to modernize Eskom’s electricity grid, support renewable energy integration, and improve Transnet’s rail and port infrastructure.

This initiative follows a 2024 World Bank loan tied to Eskom’s unbundling and a separate R18.85 billion African Development Bank loan to Transnet.

The loan is positioned as a crucial step in advancing economic recovery and structural reforms. However, with 20% of the national budget already devoted to debt servicing, experts caution that oversight and accountability will be critical to avoid repeating past mismanagement.

McKenzie proposes scrapping Black Economic Empowerment(BEE)  for empowerment bank to boost economic inclusion

McKenzie proposes scrapping BEE for empowerment bank to boost economic inclusion

Gayton McKenzie, leader of the Patriotic Alliance and Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, has called for the abolition of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) in favor of a new empowerment bank.

Speaking at the Black Business Council Summit, McKenzie argued that BBBEE has enriched only a small elite, failing to uplift the majority of Black South Africans.

His proposal involves creating a state-backed bank funded by a mandatory 1% turnover contribution from white-owned businesses and previously empowered individuals.

The bank would provide accessible loans to aspiring Black entrepreneurs, with strict accountability measures, including mentorship and proof of economic impact. “BEE has become a tool for the connected few,” McKenzie said. “This bank will fund real transformation from the ground up.”

Critics, however, question its practicality and McKenzie’s track record, citing controversies during his ministerial tenure. Others warn that scrapping BBBEE could disrupt existing transformation frameworks, while the proposed levy raises concerns about implementation and fairness.
