STAUNCH UPND MEMBER APPEALS FOR TEMPORAL RELEASE OF JAILED PF MEMBER

STAUNCH UPND MEMBER APPEALS FOR TEMPORAL RELEASE OF JAILED PF MEMBER

GEORGE MTONGA says FORMER Minister Nickson Chilangwa went to prison and the Luapula expo died. When you render justice the deeds of a man and that of his crime must be taken into account.

For the crime vs what Nicholas did for Luapula,  i do think he deserves a chance to bury his wife.

Again this is not the law neither is it a right, its a burden of request placed on the conscience of the nation and its leaders.

In my world, given my values and considering the crimes he is in prison for and the deeds he has done, i would grant him that time to mourn his wife. If at all just attend the burial.

When Chiefs Choose Sides: Why the Endorsement of HH by Southern Province Traditional Leaders Is a Dangerous Precedent- Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

When Chiefs Choose Sides: Why the Endorsement of HH by Southern Province Traditional Leaders Is a Dangerous Precedent

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

I recently watched a video broadcast by ZNBC in which several traditional leaders from Southern Province openly endorsed President Hakainde Hichilema’s candidature for the 2026 General Election. I was not only disappointed; I was alarmed. This public show of political allegiance by custodians of our culture is not a benign gesture. It is a breach of constitutional principle, a distortion of tradition, and a troubling threat to the health of Zambia’s democracy.

1. A Clear Violation of the Constitution

Let us begin with the law. Article 168(2) of the Zambian Constitution is unequivocal:

> “A chief shall not be partisan and shall not participate in partisan politics.”

This is not a suggestion. It is a legal directive. The Constitution explicitly bars traditional leaders from participating in politics, precisely to preserve their impartiality and protect their role as non-partisan guardians of unity. Chiefs are not politicians. They are entrusted with the sacred responsibility of serving all their subjects, regardless of who they vote for.

Endorsing a sitting President who is seeking re-election is not a passive act. It is active political participation. It is partisan. And it violates not only the Constitution but also the public trust.

2. Erosion of Cultural and Moral Authority

Traditional leaders derive their legitimacy from moral neutrality and cultural continuity. When they wade into political waters, they muddy that legitimacy. They stop being symbols of unity and become agents of division.

What message does it send to their subjects who support other parties? Are they still welcome in the palace? Are their voices still valid? The chieftaincy cannot function as a neutral arbiter while wearing the campaign colors of a political party.

This endorsement is not only divisive; it is corrosive. It erodes centuries of respect and credibility that traditional institutions have painstakingly built. Chiefs are supposed to be the last refuge of fairness, not the front line of electioneering.

3. Dangerous Political Consequences

The political ramifications are even more troubling. Coming from a region that is often simplistically portrayed as a political stronghold of one party, such endorsements reinforce dangerous narratives of ethnic or regional loyalty. They deepen the perception of tribal politics and threaten national cohesion.

Worse still, they create undue influence over voters. In many rural areas, the word of a chief carries enormous weight. When a chief endorses a candidate, it can feel like a command rather than a choice, particularly in communities where questioning traditional authority is culturally taboo.

This undermines the principle of free and fair elections. It compromises the integrity of the vote. And it sets a disturbing precedent where traditional leadership is used as a political tool rather than a unifying force.

Conclusion: Chiefs Must Choose Culture or Campaigns

This is more than a single political endorsement. It is a test of our democratic maturity. Do we want a Zambia where every institution is politicized, or do we want spaces that rise above the noise of election cycles?

Our traditional leaders must decide who they are: custodians of heritage or participants in political theatre. They cannot be both.

If we allow this trend to go unchecked, we risk turning the chieftaincy into an arm of political parties. In doing so, we destroy one of the few remaining pillars of non-partisan unity in this country.

Zambia does not need chiefs who campaign. Zambia needs chiefs who counsel, who unify, who protect, and who lead all of us.

Let them return to that calling before it is too late.

PRICES OF GOODS AND SERVICES TO GO DOWN – FATHER  FRANK BWALYA

PRICES OF GOODS AND SERVICES TO GO DOWN – FRANK BWALYA

May 19,2025

The United Party for National Development (UPND) Presidential Support System Media Director, Frank Bwalya, has urged the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) to ensure that suppliers of goods and services reduce prices following the Kwacha’s appreciation against the US dollar.

Speaking to the media at the Anderson Kambela Mazoka House, Mr. Bwalya stated that it would be unfair for suppliers to continue charging high prices, as this would amount to consumer exploitation.

He emphasized that the government remains optimistic about protecting citizens from unjustifiably high prices of goods and services, given the positive economic developments.

Mr. Bwalya pointed out that the government has implemented various measures to facilitate a reduction in commodity prices, particularly following the Kwacha’s gain against major global currencies.

He noted that the improved power supply should also prompt mealie meal producers to lower their prices, expressing confidence that they would respond positively.

Mr. Bwalya further stressed that while commodity prices typically rise when fuel prices increase, the recent reduction in fuel prices should logically result in price cuts by suppliers.

He reflected on the challenges faced by the UPND government in controlling high commodity prices in its early days, attributing the difficulties to the inherited debt burden but expressing optimism about future price reductions.

Mr Bwalya has called on producers of goods and services, who are usually quick to increase prices, to avoid raising the cost of essential commodities during this period of economic improvement.

Mr. Bwalya concluded by highlighting that President Hakainde Hichilema remains committed to ensuring a steady supply of medicines in health facilities and dismissed opposition claims as malicious propaganda aimed at undermining government efforts.

ZESCO Projects Load Shedding Relief by August 2025 Amid Rising Water Levels at Kariba Dam

ZESCO Projects Load Shedding Relief by August 2025 Amid Rising Water Levels at Kariba Dam

Siavonga, Zambia – May 19, 2025

ZESCO Limited has announced a cautiously optimistic outlook for Zambia’s ongoing load shedding crisis, citing improving water levels in Lake Kariba as a key factor expected to boost electricity generation in the coming months.

Speaking during a media briefing held at the Kariba North Bank Power Station in Siavonga, Senior Manager Christopher Singogo said that while ZESCO has not yet declared an official end to load shedding, projections indicate a potential improvement by August 2025. The optimism is driven by increasing reservoir levels resulting from seasonal rainfall and strategic efforts to secure power imports.

“The situation remains delicate, but the signs are encouraging. With higher water inflows and enhanced resource management, we are hopeful of reducing the intensity of load shedding by the third quarter,” Mr. Singogo said.

ZESCO has been operating under severe constraints due to drastically reduced water levels in Lake Kariba, largely attributed to persistent droughts and the El Niño weather phenomenon. This has forced the utility to cut generation at Kariba North Bank Power Station to an average of 343 megawatts (MW) in the second quarter of 2025, far below its total installed capacity of 1,080 MW.

The station’s actual output has plummeted over the past two years, with ZESCO reporting just 214 MW generated in 2024—down from 386 MW in 2023. In extreme cases, only one of the plant’s six turbines is operated at partial capacity to conserve dwindling water resources.

However, a significant development came with the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) increasing Zambia’s water allocation for 2025 to 13.5 billion cubic meters, up from 8 billion in the previous year. This move is expected to bolster generation capacity as the reservoir gradually recovers.

ZRA Public Relations and Communications Manager Selusiwe Moyo emphasized that water conservation remains the top priority: “Our immediate focus is on rebuilding reservoir levels before increasing water allocations to both Kariba North and Kariba South power stations.”

Built in the 1950s as a joint venture under the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, the Kariba Dam remains a linchpin of regional power supply and a symbol of post-independence cooperation between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

As the country waits for more favorable conditions, ZESCO is managing generation carefully to ensure long-term sustainability. While full recovery is contingent on continued rainfall, the forecast offers a measure of hope for millions affected by power shortages.

KITWE RECEIVES K1.8 MILLION UNDER THE COMPULSORY SCHOOL FEEDING INITIATIVE.

Kitwe District Education Board Secretary Christopher Nyungila, has disclosed that the district has received a total of K1.8 million meant for the procurement of food supplies under the compulsory school feeding initiative for the first quarter of 2025.

He further stressed that the funds, if prudently utilized, will go a long way in reducing the high absence rate among learners in school, often triggered by hunger as most children are sent to school on an empty stomach.

Mr. Nyungila, added that his office will not hesitate to evoke the law on teachers found mismanaging food supplies meant for children.

And Mr. Nyungila, also emphasized the importance of community involvement in the implementation of the feeding programme, urging parents, guardians, and local leaders to take an active role in monitoring the distribution and usage of the food supplies which he said, would enhance transparency and accountability in schools.

He further reaffirmed his office’s commitment towards ensuring that no child in the district is denied access to quality education.

Mr GUNTILA’s Brother, MUNTANGA has told the Lusaka High Court that when the two met for lunch on the day he was allegedly murdered, he complained that he was stressed and he wished for protection.

MUNTANGA has testified that Mr MULEYA mentioned that the Accountant was pushing him to approve the purchase of vehicles, which were excessively priced.

The witness has told Judge VINCENT SILOKA that the deceased disclosed to him that he had further discovered that the suppliers of the same vehicles were linked to the Accountant.

MALAWIAN EDUCATION MINISTRY CRITICIZED FOR MOVE TO INTRODUCE TROUSERS FOR GIRLS IN SCHOOLS

In neighboring Malawi, a heated debate has erupted over a long-pending issue regarding female students in public primary schools being allowed to wear trousers.

The country’s Parliamentary Committee on Education has taken a strong stance, criticizing the Ministry of Education for its continued silence and inaction on the matter.

Committee Chairperson Brainax Kaisi expressed disappointment, stating that despite the issue being raised almost a year ago, the Ministry has yet to make a formal decision.

Plans are now underway for the committee to summon ministry officials to explain the delay.

Education analyst Wesley Mwambakulu has also voiced concern, describing the Ministry’s quiet stance as troubling.

Meanwhile, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Christopher Kapachika Banda, has asked for more time before issuing a statement.

Supporters of the proposal argue that allowing girls to wear trousers would be a progressive step especially during cold weather and would promote comfort and dignity in the classroom. However, not everyone agrees.

Some groups within Malawi have voiced cultural and religious concerns, fearing the change might conflict with traditional values.

Proposed Constitutional Amendments Key in Social and Economic Development — Minister Mbangweta

*Proposed Constitutional Amendments Key in Social and Economic Development — Minister Mbangweta*

Mongu, 19 May 2025 — Western Province Minister Hon. Kapelwa Mbangweta(MP) this morning featured on Radio Liseli’s breakfast show, where he discussed the government’s proposed constitutional amendments and their potential impact on citizens in Western Province and the nation at large.

During the live program, Hon. Mbangweta outlined the key objectives of the proposed amendments, citing enhanced political representation, equitable resource distribution, and strengthened governance as central goals.

He stressed the significance of revising constituency boundaries in line with the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s delimitation report, describing it as a critical step toward effective public service delivery in expansive provinces like Western.

“Smaller and well-defined constituencies will help bring government services closer to the people, and this will certainly steer development nearer to all,”

He further welcomed the proposed reservation of parliamentary seats for women, youths, and persons with disabilities, calling it a progressive move toward inclusive governance.

“This guarantees that marginalized groups will no longer be left out of the decision-making process. It will promote inclusive development.”

Addressing the proposal that requires ministers to vacate office 90 days before a general election, the Minister said the amendment aims to ensure fairness in the electoral process.

“It levels the playing field and prevents the abuse of public resources during the election period, giving all a fair ground.”

Other matters raised during the discussion included the inclusion of Members of Parliament in council decision-making, the clarification of timelines for hearing election petitions, and the removal of term limits for mayors and council chairpersons to align with other elected offices.

Hon. Mbangweta urged the public to remain engaged and informed as the co

The absence of his lawyer left the court with no option but to reschedule the delivery of the final ruling.

The atmosphere outside the courtroom was one of solidarity, as fellow students, alumni, and loved ones stood by Banda during this unexpected delay. The new date for the judgement is 29th May 2025.

Supporters expressed continued hope for a fair outcome and pledged to remain by Banda’s side throughout the process.

Frank Bwalya challenges Producers to cut prices

By Mark Ziligone (ZNBC)

UPND member FRANK BWALYA has urged producers to ensure fair pricing of goods and services following reductions in fuel prices and load shedding.

Mr. BWALYA says producers should demonstrate the same urgency they implement when increasing prices, by lowering them now that their cost of production has reduced.

He told journalists at a press briefing in Lusaka today that it would be disappointing if companies failed to respond positively to the improved economic climate.

Mr. BWALYA noted that the country has recorded a good harvest this year, which should further contribute to the availability and affordability of mealie meal.

He further commended Government’s efforts to distribute farming inputs on time, adding that the timely support to farmers is critical for agricultural productivity and price stability.

Another Fight Breaks Out at a Beyoncé Concert

Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” tour continues to draw massive crowds — and, unfortunately, a fair share of drama — as yet another fan fight broke out during her recent stop in Chicago. The Grammy-winning superstar was performing at Soldier Field earlier this week when a brawl erupted among concertgoers during her emotional gospel-country ballad, “II HANDS II HEAVEN.”

The show had already been delayed by nearly two hours due to severe weather in the area, but once Beyoncé finally hit the stage, she delivered an electrifying performance packed with hits from her latest country-inspired album. However, while she sang the soothing ballad about faith and grace, chaos was unfolding just beneath her, as a group of fans began physically fighting near the stage.

Video footage from the concert shows chairs being tossed aside as two individuals grapple with each other while others — some wearing cowboy hats and western-themed outfits in honor of the tour’s aesthetic — attempt to intervene. At one point, a person appears to strike another on the head, escalating the scuffle before the individuals finally stumble apart. It’s unclear if security removed the parties involved or if any arrests were made, but Beyoncé remained unfazed and kept performing as if nothing had happened.

This is not the first time tensions have flared in the crowd during the “Cowboy Carter” tour. On opening night at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, a fight broke out when a woman allegedly knocked a cowboy hat off another concertgoer. That minor incident quickly escalated into pushing, shoving, and even kicking — with cowboy boots flying. The altercation gained widespread attention on social media and raised concerns about fan conduct at her shows.

Beyoncé, known for her commanding presence and professionalism, has not publicly commented on the fights, and her team has yet to address any changes to crowd management. Despite the sporadic violence, her tour has been praised for its stunning visuals, genre-blending sound, and her bold exploration of country and Americana themes — all while celebrating Black Southern culture.

With dozens of shows still left on the tour schedule, fans are hoping future concerts can stay focused on the music, not mayhem. As Beyoncé herself sings in the tour’s anthem, “This ain’t Texas” — but the saloon-style energy some fans are bringing might just say otherwise. Here’s to hoping concertgoers can hold onto their cowboy hats and keep their hands to themselve

Drake Eats $1 M Maple Leafs Loss, Cites “Justin Bieber Curse” After Game 7 Rout

Justin Bieber was in attendance with his wife, Hailey, as Drake’s hometown Toronto Maple Leafs were eliminated from the playoffs.
Drake blamed the “[Justin] Bieber curse” on his Instagram Story, Sunday, after losing a $1 million bet on the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team lost in a 6-1 blowout at the hands of the Florida Panthers. Drake shared his betslip on social media, earlier in the day. He picked his hometown team to win on the moneyline in one bet and for them to win by 2 or more goals in a smaller gamble.

Panthers winger Brad Marchand was key to the team’s success, recording a goal and two assists in the contest. It marked his fifth time beating the Maple Leafs in a Game 7 elimination game, having done so with the Boston Bruins in 2013, 2018, 2019 and 2024 before last night, as noted by ESPN. “I grew up a Leafs fan. I enjoy playing against the Leafs. I enjoy interacting with fans. Like, it’s fun. It’s not something I’ll forever get to do,” he said afterward. With their win, the Panthers are advancing to the Eastern Conference finals against the Carolina Hurricanes

Justin Bieber was actually in attendance during Sunday’s game as an avid Maple Leafs fan. He reflected on the loss in a post on Instagram afterward. He wrote: “I don’t remember a time in my life when I haven’t been obsessed with the leafsssss. This year we made it farther than we have in so long and im happy about that. I can be patient cuz I know this is the team to do it.”

Before his Toronto Maple Leafs bet, Drake made headlines over the weekend for teaming up with Kai Cenat to announce a new music video for his song with PartyNextDoor, “SOMEBODY LOVES ME.” He originally released the track on his latest album, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U.

During a livestream, Cenat revealed he’s offering $15k to 20 fans who provide him with short clips of ideas they have for the music video. Sharing the clip of Cenat on Instagram, Drake wrote in the caption: “CALLING ALL VI$$$IONARIES.”

Diddy’s ex Misa Hylton explains why she was in court to support their son during s33x trafficking trial

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ ex Misa Hylton took to social media to make it known that family comes first after she turned up in court to support their son Justin Combs during his father’s sex trafficking trial.

In a lengthy post on Instagram on Saturday, Hylton, who dated Combs in the early 1990s, explained why she showed up in court to support their son Justin. Photos that were shared online showed the 52 year old using a walker as she arrived at the Manhattan Federal Court.

“God is good all the time!” she wrote. “Yes, I’m good everyone I’m on my healing journey. When I suffered my injury I had chosen to heal privately but when my son said ‘Mommy I need you’ I was right there for him walker and all. I’m a MOTHER FIRST, FOR REAL and I am my son’s strength and that’s just what it is. Plain and Simple,” she added.

“To all of my temporarily disabled and disabled people, don’t ever be ashamed of your condition or the need to use the medical tools created to assist in your healing or the way you need to move around in this world,” she wrote. “If you have God in your heart, pray for us all. Be kind, use critical thinking and hold your head high.”

Combs, 55, and Hylton were romantically involved in the early 1990s, and she gave birth to their son Justin in December 1993. Despite splitting not too long after welcoming their son, Combs and Hylton have had a cordial relationship, and they have been photographed at many events, PEOPLE reported.

This also isn’t the first time Hylton has touched on Combs’ legal woes. Following the March 2024 raid of the Bad Boy Records founder’s Los Angeles home by Homeland Security agents, she took to Instagram to condemn the “overzealous and overtly militarized force” that was used against Justin, 31, and his brother Christian. The pair were at home at the time of the raid, and they were handcuffed.

“[The force] used against my sons Justin and Christian is deplorable. If these were the sons of a non-Black celebrity, they would not have been handled with the same aggression,” she wrote alongside a video showing Justin and Christian in handcuffs during the raid. “The attempt to humiliate and terrorize these innocent young BLACK MEN is despicable!”

Hylton also offered words of support to Combs’ ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura after CNN shared a March 2016 video of him allegedly assaulting her in a Los Angeles hotel. “I am heartbroken that Cassie must relive the horror of her abuse, and my heart goes out to her. I know exactly how she feels, and through my empathy, it has triggered my own trauma,” she wrote.

She added: “These young people were raised by women that want the best for them – we put God and education first and have always been united in our mutual effort to support their dreams. Two of the youngest do not have their mother here and it has been our duty to support them.”

Hylton also said Combs “needs help” and she was “praying that he truly does the personal work and receives it.”

Diddy’s twin daughters attend prom in style amid his sex trafficking trial

The twin daughters of embattled music executive Sean “Diddy” Combs took a breather from their father’s high-profile sex trafficking trial as they attended prom in matching red dresses.

Per TMZ, Jessie and D’Lila Combs attended the Saturday event that took place at the Harbour House in downtown Los Angeles with their dates. The pair also entered and exited the venue in a conspicuous style as their dates carried them inside and when they were leaving.

And though the 18 year olds reportedly arrived at their prom an hour late, they told photographers that the party doesn’t begin until they’re in the building, adding that they were saving best for last. Combs shares the twins with deceased model and actress Kim Porter.

Combs’ sex trafficking trial is currently ongoing in New York, and the 55-year-old’s family have been supporting him as he fights to clear his name.

Hylton also stated that “whoever doesn’t understand that just simply isn’t in alignment with me or anything that I’m about in life.” “I’m cool with that. I have a purpose filled life that I live daily. I make impact. I’m not concerned with insecure people attempting to project their insecurities on to me. EVER,” she continued.

Elsewhere in her lengthy post, Hylton touched on her injury and shared words of encouragement to people suffering with disabilities.

The pair were at home at the time of the raid, and they were handcuffed.

As previously reported by Face2Face Africa, Combs was arrested by federal agents in September 2024 and charged with sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation to engage in prostitution. Combs, who entered a not-guilty plea, is being held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. The Bad Boy Records founder is additionally facing multiple sexual assault lawsuits.

Combs is accused of orchestrating “Freak-Offs,” described as elaborate, produced sex performances that he directed, recorded, and sometimes participated in.

Combs’ legal woes started after CNN shared a video of him assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura at a Los Angeles hotel in 2016. The rapper and music executive had initially denied allegations of rape and abuse from Cassie. But he later issued an apology on social media after the circulation of the video.

The 55-year-old could be sentenced to life in prison if found guilty of the charges.

Fan Rejects Usher’s Viral Cherries Stunt During Performance

Afan rejected being fed cherries during one of Usher’s recent public performances. Clearly, the singer did not expect that reaction, but it turned out that the female admirer was allergic to fruit.

The interaction happened at Usher’s recent show at The O2 in London. During the performance, the Love In This Club hitmaker continued his tradition of walking through the audience and handing out cherries to women.

However, during his interaction with this fan who had tattooed the singer’s name on her arm, the cherry-feeding attempts did not produce the result he intended to achieve.

A video of the moment on social media captured the female fan whispering a word to the singer. When he tried once more to offer the fruit, she refused again, explaining that she was allergic to the fruit.

“Oh shit, you’re allergic to cherries, damn! We almost had an emergency in here,” Usher said while apologizing and hugging the lady, and continued the show.

In a previous performance, Usher stepped forward to a female fan, held out two cherries, and dangled them over her mouth. The lady spontaneously and seductively eats the fruit in front of him.

The fan was later identified as Jimalita Tillman, who had travelled to London to watch the celebrated performer part of his massive ‘Past Present Future’ tour.

Last month, streaming platform BET+ announced that it will release a film that catalogues various performances by R&B star. Titled Usher: Rendezvous in Paris, the project was scheduled to arrive on May 8, 2025, as a collaboration between Sony Music Vision and BET+.

The film was reportedly put together when the award-winning artiste staged his week-long sold-out concert at La Seine Musicale in Paris, during the Paris Fashion Week.

According to the brains behind the production, audiences could expect stunning visuals, never-before-seen costumes, and an immersive light and effects show that brings Usher’s 30-year music catalogue to life.

Rendezvous in Paris features live renditions of Usher’s top hits such as Yeah, My Boo, U Got It Bad, and others. It would also include some behind-the-scenes pictures of his performances.

In a statement following the announcement, Usher stated: “I’m happy to be partnering with BET+ to bring the celebration of my 30-year career to you, the fans, to enjoy from the comfort of your homes.”

PRESIDENT OF SOUTH AFRICA COURTS ELON TO MEND TIES WITH TRUMP

PRESIDENT OF SOUTH AFRICA COURTS ELON TO MEND TIES WITH TRUMP

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa is flying to D.C. this week hoping one man can patch things up with  Trump: Elon.

Relations between the U.S. and South Africa have tanked.

Trump cut aid in February, granted refugee status to white South Africans over “racial discrimination” (which South Africa calls nonsense), and fumed over the country’s land reforms and its genocide case against Israel.

Add tariffs and tension, and the bromance is dead.

Enter Elon—South African-born, Trump-adjacent, and possibly Ramaphosa’s last best hope.

The plan?

Offer Tesla lower import tariffs if Elon builds EV chargers in South Africa, where fewer than 1,000 electric cars sold last year. (Compare that to America’s 1.4 million.).

Also up for discussion: Starlink.

Elon:

“Even though I was born in South Africa, the government will not grant
@Starlink
a license to operate simply because I am not black.

This is a shameful disgrace to the legacy of the great Nelson Mandela who sought to have all races treated equally in South Africa.”

Tagging along is Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen, worried Trump will axe South Africa’s duty-free farm exports.

That would hammer an industry worth $2 billion and spike already brutal unemployment.

So yes, Ramaphosa’s bringing data, trade proposals, and Elon’s name to the table.

If charm doesn’t work, maybe capitalism will.

Ramaphosa admits ANC faces uphill battle to regain public trust

Ramaphosa admits ANC faces uphill battle to regain public trust

President Cyril Ramaphosa has conceded that the African National Congress (ANC) is grappling with serious challenges in regaining the trust of South Africans ahead of the 2025 local government elections.

Addressing the ANC Northern Cape Provincial Executive Committee during an induction session on May 16, Ramaphosa stressed the urgency of reconnecting with communities and directly addressing their concerns.

He acknowledged that the party’s declining support at the polls reflects growing public frustration with poor service delivery, high unemployment rate, persistent poverty, and a string of corruption scandals.

The ANC, which has governed since the advent of democracy in 1994, suffered a major blow in the 2024 general election, with its parliamentary majority plunging to 40%, pushing the party into a coalition government for the first time.

Ramaphosa urged ANC branch leaders to anchor themselves in local communities and to serve with integrity. He also issued a stern warning against the appointment of unqualified individuals to government positions, cautioning that such practices further undermine the party’s credibility.

“The road to renewal starts with accountability and genuine service to the people,” Ramaphosa said.

EIGHT MAZABUKA UPND OFFICIALS SUSPENDED  FOR ENDORSING HH & NKOMBO AS THEIR PREFERRED 2026 CANDIDATES

KANGAROO COURT SUSPENDS EIGHT MAZABUKA UPND OFFICIALS WHO ENDORSED HH & NKOMBO AS THEIR PREFERRED 2026 CANDIDATES

In-fighting has seemingly engulfed the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) in Mazabuka.

The latest allegations as gathered by Byta FM News indicate that attempts were made by a faction to use maximum force on the District Disciplinary Committee to suspend six district officials.

This is after the said official endorsed President Hakainde Hichilema and Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament, Gary Nkombo to recontest their seats in the 2026 elections.

According to UPND Mazabuka District Acting Secretary, Ronald Mwiinga (see attached video) some members in the Executive Committee harassed him at night for refusing to sign suspension letters for the six officials.

He has named one of the individuals who stormed his residence with the suspension letters as Mazabuka Central Ward Councilor, who is also District Youth Vice Chairperson for Administration, Chrisphine Hamangaba.

Others are, Kaonga Ward Councilor who is also District Youth Vice Chairperson for Politics, Clifford Joleya, as well as District Executive Committee Vice Treasurer, Augustine Shabalima.

Meanwhile, Mwiinga says the District Disciplinary committee found the six officials accused of foul conduct had no case to answer and had already submitted their findings to the Provincial Executive Committee.

But UPND Mazabuka District Vice chairperson political Clifford Joleya refuted claims by Mwiinga, describing them as baseless and unfounded.

He has since challenged that the matter be reported to police.

In another development, UPND Mazabuka District Chairperson, Wilfred Mulomba, was over the weekend assaulted at church by cadres over allegations of misappropriating K20,000 meant for youths during a recent presidential visit to Monze.

Meanwhile, the UPND in Mazabuka has suspended eight district officials for six months.

This follows their participation in a press briefing where they endorsed Hichilema and Nkombo as their preferred candidates for 2026 just after the Mazabuka Central MP was fired as Minister of Local Government and Rural Development.

HH CAN’T BE ALLOWED TO RULE BEYOND 2026 – KALABA
… His administration has proved to be the very definition of failure

Hakainde Hichilema’s misrule and corruption riddled government must never be given another chance to see the light of day in State House after the 2026 general elections, says Citizens First (CF) leader Harry Kalaba.

And Kalaba has stated that if voted into office next year, his party would restore public trust and investor confidence by rooting out corruption and strengthening accountability in state institutions.

In a write up shared with Daily Revelation over the weekend, Kalaba argued that President Hichilema’s administration had proved to be the very definition of failure, where donor money was being cut from the country’s already meagre resources owing to his failure to fight corruption in the country.

Kalaba stated that it made sad reading that President Hichilema’s own State House officials were now being mentioned as interfering in the procurement of public goods and services.

Kalaba said more puzzling was President Hichilema’s silence over the recent revelation by former Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA ) director general Victor Nyasulu that he received phones calls from the President’s aides, Dr Lawrence Mwananyanda and Professor Roma Chilengi, about procurements

Amos Chanda’s Misplaced Confidence in President Hichilema Is Detached from Reality and an Insult to Zambians”- PF

“Amos Chanda’s Misplaced Confidence in President Hichilema Is Detached from Reality and an Insult to Zambians”

Issued by: Patriotic Front (PF) Media Directorate

The Patriotic Front (PF) wishes to respond, with great concern and clarity, to the remarks made by Mr. Amos Chanda during his appearance on Diamond TV, where he expressed an unrealistic and misguided confidence in President Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election chances in 2026.

Mr. Chanda, a former press aide to President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, has now taken a shameful detour to now speak glowingly of a President he once opposed, defended the arrest of, and labeled unfit for leadership. This hypocritical shift does not reflect political maturity—it reflects opportunism of the highest order.

Let us remind Mr. Chanda and the UPND government that governance is not about optics or hollow television appearances—it is about delivery. And on that front, the UPND has failed lamentably. Since forming government, President Hichilema and his team have run on a platform of broken promises and mass deception. The cost of living is unbearable. Youth unemployment is at record highs. The kwacha is losing value daily. Fuel prices have hit the ceiling. Farmers are suffering. Teachers and health workers remain underpaid and neglected. Is this the victory Mr. Chanda sees coming?

We challenge Mr. Chanda: instead of indulging in elite fantasies, take a walk through the compounds of Kanyama, Chawama, Misisi, Kalikiliki, and Chibolya. Go to the rural parts of Eastern, Northern, Luapula, and Muchinga provinces. Speak to the struggling marketeers, unemployed graduates, and civil servants. You will find not hope—but betrayal. Not excitement—but anger. The so-called “New Dawn” is now a long, dark night for the majority of Zambians.

Mr. Chanda also seems to forget that it was these same UPND leaders who ridiculed and insulted President Lungu’s projects, only to shamelessly commission them today as their own. The soon-to-be-commissioned 102-million-litre fuel reserve—one of the largest in the region—was conceived, designed, and built under President Lungu. It is a PF legacy. It is vision. It is planning. It is delivery. And it stands in contrast to the UPND’s lack of any tangible infrastructure success three years into office.

Furthermore, Mr. Chanda should not pretend to speak on behalf of Zambians. He has no electoral constituency, no grassroots following, and no political mandate. His political commentary does not reflect the sentiments of the people, but rather the self-preserving acrobatics of a man desperate to stay relevant in circles of power.

Let it be known: the people of Zambia did not vote for the UPND to inherit PF’s projects. They voted for economic emancipation, jobs, affordable food, and justice. Today, they have received none of that. Instead, they are told to clap for IMF conditionalities, jobless statistics, and soaring prices.

Conclusion:

As the Patriotic Front, we reaffirm that the people of Zambia will not be fooled twice. We are on the ground, and we see the tide turning. The hunger, frustration, and anger cannot be ignored. Come 2026, no amount of television commentary, PR spin, or sugar-coated lies will save the UPND. The people are ready. The people are watching. And the people will speak—decisively.

HICHILEMA’S WORKING VISITS TO BLOW MORE HOT AIR- Fred M’membe

HICHILEMA’S WORKING VISITS TO BLOW MORE HOT AIR

Mr Hakainde Hichilema has commenced a week-long working visit in Southern Province.

Provincial Minister Mr Credo Nanjuwa was recently quoted by the media saying that Mr Hichilema, who will be in the province till May 24, 2025 is expected to officiate at key functions, and engage with local communities, with scheduled stops in Choma, Namwala and Kalomo. Mr Nanjuwa emphasized that the visit includes community engagements and a major political rally, dubbed the “Mother of All Rallies,” scheduled to take place on May 23, 2025 in Choma.

We would like to understand what exactly Mr Hichilema does as President, apart from moving from place to place posturing about achievements when the ground is screaming the opposite of what he claims. What are these community interactions all about even when people are hungry and hurting? How can he interact with people who can hardly feed their families, isn’t that a mockery?

Mr Hichilema is interacting with people whose lives are ruined by load shedding, high electricity tariffs, high food prices, high fertilizer prices, high mealie meal prices, unstable fuel prices, unemployment and high cost of living among many. How is he doing it? We would like to know. Isn’t he just piling up more promises on the already unfulfilled ones, or lying and manipulating the people with the same exaggerated claims of accomplishments?

We have said it before that true success is easy to see and feel on the ground. So, amidst all this hardship courtesy of the UPND government, Mr Hichilema even has the guts to transport people from all over the province to their so-called “Mother of All Rallies”, which will be held in Choma? For what really? What are they trying to prove and to whom exactly? Gathering hungry and frustrated people to come and listen to more lies, deceit and manipulation. Muleufwilako abantu uluse!

How can a country progress when its leader is ever on the move blowing hot air under the guise of interacting with communities? Busy moving around to irritate people with additional empty talk, exaggerations and insincere promises. What kind of leaders are these? Were they voted in power for interactions or solving the problems that people are facing? When does the leader of this country even work or sit down to seriously think through the numerous political, economic and social problems affecting this country?

Mr Hichilema has deceived himself into thinking that those photos of hired crowds of people and the headlines that will accompany them mean anything to the suffering masses of this country. People are no longer interested in staged images and messages from the people who have lied to them before, and are now afraid to admit or face the truth about their own lies. People know Mr Hichilema for who he truly is and are just waiting for the next Election Day to sort out this mess once and for all.

Let them cheat themselves, but the reality is, things on the ground are getting worse for them. Yabeja makani!

Why do presidents fail?

By Sishuwa Sishuwa

No leader in competitive multi-party democracies gets elected to power on the promise of delivering failure. Yet even those who promise progressive change and structural reform generally end up failing once in office. Why? How do presidents make decisions on key national issues? What drives, influences, or constrains their actions?

Yesterday, I interviewed former President of Zambia, Edgar Lungu, as part of the fieldwork research for my next book, Why Presidents Fail: Presidential Power and Decision-making in Zambia under Edgar Lungu.

The book draws on interviews, newspaper accounts, and archival sources to provide a critical evaluation of his seven-year presidency on a range of issues. These include constitutional reform, democratic institutions, the management of ruling party cadres, anti-corruption, national unity, the economy, foreign policy, and the key players and institutions during the presidential transition process.

Understanding the factors that shape presidential decision-making is essential to strengthening democracies and avoiding the pitfalls of the past. I am grateful to former president Lungu for the meeting and not dodging uncomfortable questions.

Is an HH–ECL Meeting on the Cards?…could be a ‘Heal Zambia’ Game Changer- Amb. Anthony Mukwita

Is an HH–ECL Meeting on the Cards?

…could be a ‘Heal Zambia’ Game Changer

By Amb. Anthony Mukwita | 19 May 2025

My morning coffee is brewing, the bacon and eggs are sizzling—it’s a good and blessed day, just to wake up and breathe.

I hope the same for you, good people.

Then my phone pings. A headline from the Daily Nation catches my eye: President Hakainde Hichilema may be considering reconciliation with Zambia’s sixth president, Edgar Chagwa Lungu. I say to myself, “What a wonderful day.” HH WILLING TO CONSULT ECL.

Two living presidents. One divided country. A handshake after years of political acrimony and friction? What could possibly go wrong?

Zambia, a nation of abundant resources yet mired in poverty, could only benefit from such a moment of unity. Love and peace have never been en£mies of progress.

Let me be clear: I’m a nobody in the grand scheme of things and I have no horse is in this race.
I’ve simply been lucky enough to serve my country in high office—perhaps where better men could have been chosen.

But I do know this: no country moves forward when its leaders are at w@r. Economic growth, job creation, poverty reduction—they all stall in times of political conflict.

It’s a zero-sum game. I’ve learned this not just in politics or diplomacy, but in marriage too—21 years and counting with the same wonderful woman E that picks me up every time I fall and I fall a lot. Love wins.

So if presidential spokesperson Clayson Hamasaka’s statement in today’s Daily Nation is a genuine signal from President Hichilema, we could be on the cusp of something positively transformational for Zambia.

I say, forget the cynics. I’m an incurable optimist—my glass is always half full that’s the way I roll.
Imagine a Zambia without political vendettas and knives out, without unnecessary arrests or suppressive laws.

A Zambia where public rallies are normal, where political opponents are not enemies, and where development resumes without fear or favour.

We sit on riches—copper, cobalt, manganese—but we don’t own or benefit from them fully. That’s not just an economic tragedy; it’s a leadership one. And such wealth cannot be harnessed in a climate of animosity.

End the cyber laws. Bring back civil liberties. Let’s just live and let live.

As I often say: war benefits arms manufacturers; prolonged court battles benefit lawyers. Peace, on the other hand, benefits the people.

I’ve studied diplomacy and communication at the highest level, worked in it, and won international recognition. I don’t claim to know everything, but I do know this—Zambia doesn’t need more toxicity. We need healing.

Personally, I miss my former boss, President Lungu. But more than that, I’d love to see him share a glass of champagne—or mabisi—with President Hichilema. Zambia is big enough for both leaders.

This goes beyond politics for me. I have a wife. I have sons. They shouldn’t suffer because of their father’s political past.

If we don’t break the cycle of hate now, it will haunt generations. As they say, hate begets hate. My son could end up hating those who hate me—and so the cycle continues.

If Clayson’s words are indeed sincere, then let the healing begin. Let’s choose love over war.

Mistakes have been made—on both sides. But only sober, selfless leadership can mend broken bridges. If ECL and HH sit down and talk openly, there’s nothing they cannot work through.

Or maybe, just maybe, I misread the Daily Nation.
For now, I’ll return to my coffee and jazz. But I remain convinced of one thing: poverty is real, and we cannot f!ght it with hate.

Imagine a Zambia where Fred M’membe, Harry Kalaba, and KBF can thrive side by side. What’s wrong with that?

In the land of plenty, fools should not die of hunger. And in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

The lips of the wise bring life; fools perish for lack of wisdom.

UPNDS FAILURE IS WORSENING ON A CONTINUOUS BASIS- HON. MUTOTWE  KAFWAYA

LUNTE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT HON. MUTOTWE L. KAFWAYA WRITES::::

UPNDS FAILURE IS WORSENING ON A CONTINUOUS BASIS.

I read a very depressing cabinet decision, communicated by the Chief Government Spokes Person concerning the surrender of VIP and VVIP lounges at selected airports in Zambia.

Can UPND ever run anything to the satisfaction of people?

UPND has failed to run some VIP and VVIP lounges at Kenneth Kaunda, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe and Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula international airports. They have decided to give them out to the private sector for management.

UPND believes doing so will create competitiveness and customer satisfaction and ensure attainment of international standards in service delivery. This is as has been communicated.

Now, the terminals have been built for UPND. They have also been furnished for them. The only thing they have to do is to place competent Human Resources to run the lounges. They have failed to do this simple act. Instead they are privatization them.

What will UPND ever be able to run. Anyway we have overrated UPND long enough. A government that has failed to run the registrar of societies to the satisfaction of some opposition political parties.

UPND is responsible for our economy.
They are responsible for our land.
They are responsible for our water resources. They are responsible for our mineral resources. They are responsible for country.

Should it surprise anyone that UPND wanted to give away Six Million Hectors of land to a foreigner? Basically privatizing land the same way they have privatized the Lusaka Ndola Road constructed with Zambian peoples money.

Should it surprise anyone that UPND gave away 51% shares of Mopani to a foreigner for nothing – no ngwee – free free free? Foreigners walked away with control.

The other mine given to a broke investor who would start looking for money from the Zambian financial market.

This failure is beyond abnormal.

Restoring EVERYTHING PATRIOTIC.

Response to Mark Simuuwe: Justice Must Be Blind, Not Guided by the Executive’s Hand

SIMUUWE TAUGHT A FEW LESSONS

Response to Mark Simuuwe: Justice Must Be Blind, Not Guided by the Executive’s Hand

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

Mark Simuuwe, the United Party for National Development (UPND) Media Director, recently told the opposition to “stop weeping” over the arrests of its members. His remarks are not only cynical and condescending; they are a dangerous deflection from the serious erosion of our democratic institutions. His words are an insult to every Zambian who values justice, and they expose a government that would rather weaponize the law than uphold it.

Let it be made unmistakably clear: no citizen is above the law, but no government is above scrutiny. When arrests and prosecutions disproportionately target opposition leaders while ruling party elites enjoy immunity and invisibility, we are not witnessing justice. We are witnessing political warfare disguised as legal process.

Simuuwe wants us to believe these arrests are clean and apolitical. But Zambians are not gullible. We see the pattern. Opposition voices are gagged, harassed, and dragged through the courts, while UPND allies enjoy untouchable status. This is not law enforcement; it is selective persecution. And it reeks of a regime that fears dissent more than it fears corruption.

Let us not sugarcoat the truth: the judiciary today is compromised. When judges rule in favor of the Executive with suspicious consistency, when bail is denied to political opponents but granted swiftly to ruling party cadres, when courtrooms become rubber stamps for State House, we are not operating in a democracy. We are living in a constitutional hostage situation.

Mr. Simuuwe references the Constitution, yet he conveniently ignores Article 118, which guarantees an independent and impartial judiciary. But what good is a constitutional guarantee when it is trampled daily by an Executive that treats justice like a personal tool of revenge?

If the UPND truly believes in the rule of law, let them prove it.

Let opposition leaders be treated equally before the law, not as targets of political cleansing.

Let judicial processes be free from interference, not guided by party interests.

Let the courts serve the people, not protect the powerful.

Let us be very clear. Mocking citizens and leaders who demand fairness is not bold leadership. It is arrogance born of unchecked power. It is a page torn from the playbook of every fallen regime that believed it could silence the people forever.

Zambians are watching. We will not be silenced. We will not be intimidated. And we will not let this nation slide quietly into authoritarianism under the guise of law and order.

What the people want is simple: justice without bias, leadership without arrogance, and democracy without deception. If Mr. Simuuwe and the UPND cannot understand that, then they have already failed the Zambian people. History will remember them not as defenders of justice, but as the architects of betrayal against a free nation.

Bob Sichinga on the lamentations of the ZRA boss

Sichinga on the lamentations of the ZRA boss

By Daily Revelation Editor

Former Commerce minister Bob Sichinga says the UPND government’s economic policies are crippling the economy, leading to reduced economic activity and a decrease in revenue generation.

Sichinga’s remarks follow the lamentations from the country’s main revenue collector, Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) director general Dingani Banda, who mourned recently about the narrow tax base despite the country’s rich mineral resources.

The fact that this country is not able to get enough from its main export earner, the mines, has continued to defy wisdom. One would have thought that as a nation, we would have by now put in place systems that would have already been in overdrive oiling the country’s revenue collections from mining.

It’s understood that the government is on a policy drive to attract more investment in the mining sector to reach the targeted 3 million tonne output by 2031. However, there is a way in which the government could work out a win-win situation where increased investment goes hand in hand with sustainable development and increased revenue collection for the country. This is especially against the backdrop where the copper prices have for some time now been enjoying some of the best prices on the international market.

There was no need on the part of the government to reduce the mineral royalty tax from 6 percent to 3 percent, as even at that same 6 percent threshold, the mining companies were still going to remain profitable. At that same margin, many more could have actually come onto the market. It is not a good idea to always want to listen to the cries of the same people who are making a kill from mining and selling our precious resource

We would expect that instead of lamenting, Banda should be urging the policy makers in the administration he is serving to work towards creating an enabling environment where the country should begin to earn more from its mineral wealth. Rather than backtracking on the15 percent export duty on precious stones and metals for instance, Banda should be encouraging Musokotwane to actually scale up the percentage beyond the 15 percent they reversed.

But as we seek to find ways of increasing revenue collections, we must be a country that should learn to take care of the little we have. It is stated in the Holy Scriptures that, “Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”

Which brings us to the other point Sichinga raised, where he questioned the government’s rationale behind increasing expenditure on the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) without identifying the revenue source

CSO-DEBT ALLIANCE URGES TAX REFORMS TO BOOST DOMESTIC RESOURCE MOBILIZATION

By Chamuka Shalubala

The Civil Society Organization-CSO Debt Alliance is calling for urgent tax reforms to broaden Zambia’s tax base and reduce the country’s reliance on external borrowing.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Alliance Coordinator Elijah Mumba has stressed the importance of integrating more economic players into the tax system to enhance government revenue collection and generate sufficient domestic resources.

Mr. Mumba has warned that without significant improvements in domestic resource mobilization, Zambia risks increasing its debt burden amid diminishing prospects for external financing.

He is of the view that as the global financial landscape evolves, Zambia may be compelled to seek more external financial support unless proactive steps are taken to strengthen internal revenue generation.

He adds that there is a need for sustainable economic policies, emphasizing the need to reduce dependency on borrowing by investing in long-term fiscal resilience and accountability.

DR. M’MEMBE CALLS FOR POLITICS GUIDED BY CHRISTIAN LOVE AND DUTY

DR. M’MEMBE CALLS FOR POLITICS GUIDED BY CHRISTIAN LOVE AND DUTY

Lusaka… Sunday May 18, 2025 — Socialist Party (SP) President Dr. Fred M’membe has emphasized the critical role of love as both a spiritual and civic duty.

Speaking from a place of deep personal faith, Dr. M’membe

stated that love should not be seen merely as an emotion but as a guiding principle that shapes one’s religious devotion and political commitments.

He noted that within the Catholic Church, the faithful are called to love one another in the same way Christ has loved humanity.

This call to love, he said, extends beyond the Church pews and into the halls of political power, where leaders must serve with compassion, justice, and humility.

Dr. M’membe further urged citizens to hold priests in high esteem, referring to them as shepherds of the faith.

He said they are entrusted with the sacred duty of guiding souls and reminding believers of their higher calling.

Even in times of disagreement, he encouraged approaching clergy with respect and unity, recognizing the spiritual bond that ties the Christian community together.

He also stressed that political engagement is not only a right but a responsibility of every Catholic.

According to Dr. M’membe, the teachings of the Catholic Church affirm the importance of active citizenship and participation in governance.

He maintained that faith and politics are not separate domains but are inherently connected through a shared commitment to the common good.

Dr. M’membe called on citizens to lead with love in all areas of life — in the Church, in communities, and in political spheres — asserting that such an approach reflects the light of Christ and advances the cause of justice and compassion in society.

FDD CALLS ON HICHILEMA TO REVIEW PERFORMANCE OF UPND LEADERS

The Opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) in Southern Province has urged President Hakainde Hichilema to evaluate the performance of United Party for National Development (UPND) Members of Parliament during his working holiday in the region.

FDD Youth Chairperson Jappi Siang’andu said the President should use the opportunity to analyse the effectiveness of civic leaders, expressing concern that many Members of Parliament, Mayors, and councillors are underperforming.

Siang’andu charged that UPND MPs have lost popularity due to their performance.

President Hichilema is currently in Southern Province, where he is expected to spend a week visiting Choma, Namwala, and Kalomo districts.

IBA RENEWS NINE BROADCASTING LICENCES AND EXTENDS “COOLING OFF” WINDOW PERIOD

LUSAKA, 19th May 2025

The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has renewed broadcasting licences for nine (9) stations after meeting the prescribed conditions.

The stations granted licence renewals are:

i. Kabangabanga Community Radio (Solwezi)
ii. Mpika Community Radio (Mpika)
iii. Mwinilunga Community Radio (Mwinilunga)
iv. Maranatha Community Radio (Kabwe)
v. KNC Radio (Kabwe)
vi. Q FM (Lusaka)
vii. Zambezi FM Radio (Livingstone)
viii. Sun FM (Ndola), and
ix. Muvi TV – Terrestrial (Lusaka).

These renewals follow applications submitted by the respective stations to seek a new mandate to provide broadcasting services.

A radio broadcasting licence has a lifespan of five (5) years, while a television broadcasting licence is valid for ten (10) years.

Furthermore, the IBA has extended the “cooling off” window for radio and television stations to temporarily switch off broadcasting equipment from midnight to 06:00 hours, up to 30th September 2025.

The extension aims to mitigate operational costs arising from the ongoing power challenges due to load management.

This measure follows consultations with broadcasters and intends to support them in managing the increased costs associated with the current power deficit.

The initial cooling-off window ended on 31 December 2024. However, the Board extended the opportunity to 31st March 2025.

After reassessing the situation, the Authority has resolved to extend the measure for a second time until 30th September 2025, thereby ensuring continued support to broadcasting stations.

The Authority is confident that this measure will offer much-needed relief to broadcasting stations amidst power challenges.

CYBER LAWS ARE NOT MEANT TO VIOLATE HUMAN RIGHTS, ZAMBIA POLICE ASSURES CITIZENS

Zambia Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi last week assured Zambians that the recently amended cyber laws are not meant to violate human rights but to defend them in the digital age.

Leading a session during the Lusaka forum organised by the Free Press Initiative under its Claim Your Space Freedom of Expression project implemented in partnership with Young Women in Action, Mr Chilabi emphasized that various laws, such as the Access to Information Act, exist to protect journalists, civil society organizations, and people living with disabilities.

He led an engaging discussion on law enforcement, surveillance, and their impact on freedom of expression, journalism, and activism.

The FPI engagements under this project aim to strengthen public understanding of Zambia’s cyber laws and digital rights.

He was in Zambia to perform at a private wedding of the daughter of emerald mining giant Grizzly Mining Chairperson Abdoulaye

This immediately attracted huge social media attention and fierce debate.

You see, Zambia is one of the poorest countries in the world and is ranked the sixth poorest countries  after Niger, Malawi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, and Somalia

But Zambia also makes it to another ranking.

It’s on top  of the most unequal country in the world, were there is a group of a few rich and extremely wealthy people living amongst some of the poorest people in the world.

An unequal country is one where there’s a significant disparity in income, wealth, resources, or opportunities among different groups within the population.

Zambia is therefore among the top six most unequal countries in the world, based on income distribution, alongside South Africa, Namibia, Colombia, Eswatini, Botswana, and Zambia.

These countries consistently rank at the top of list, measuring inequality using the Gini coefficient, which indicates the extent of income distribution within a country.

Zambia’s national poverty rate stands at 64.3%, with approximately 12.9 million people living on less than $2.15 a day.

ZAMBIA A WEALTHY COUNTRY

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia are often cited as among the wealthiest nations in the world in terms of resource endowment, specifically regarding minerals while.
The two countries depict the paradox of a rich country with a poor people.

its people remain amongst the poorest in the world.

GRIZZLY MINING

In this wedding, the brides father, Abdoulaye Ndiaye is the pioneering founder and
Chairman of Grizzly Mining Limited in Kitwe
Zambia.

Abdoulaye started his mining career in Zambia in
1972, hustling and trading emeralds in Lufwanyama, located in
Zambia’s Copperbelt Province.

The Senegalese
born mining executive and entrepreneur acquired
the Grizzly Mine twenty-five years later.

For nearly
thirty years, he has been leading the way at
Grizzly Mining, qualifying as a gemologist whilst
Grizzly Mining produced some of the world’s
largest high-grade emeralds.

Through the creation of employment for more than 4,000 workers at their mining operations

Grizzly Mining.

Employees of Grizzly Mining Limited engage in the production and processing, as well as grading, marketing, and supply of emeralds and beryl.

The company is best known as the source of some of the largest high-grade emeralds globally.

Abdoulaye was born in 1952, in the village of Médina Gounass, Senegal, where he attended an Islamic school.

His nickname “Gounass”, is from the town where he grew up.

Nearby Kagem and Grizzly have made Zambia topple Columbia as the largest producers of emerald in the world.

The mine produces approximately 60 million carats of emeralds annually.

The Kagem emerald mine next door, is considered the world’s largest single emerald mine.

It is estimated to produce approximately 25-30% of the world’s total emerald supply.

75% of the mine is owned by Gemfields Group and 25% is owned by the Zambian government through ZCCM-IH and IDC.

Gemfields is a foreign owned entity.

The major shareholders are include Assore Holdings Proprietary Limited, Rozendal & Associates Holdings Ltd, Ophorst van Marwijk Kooy Vermogensbeheer N.V., and Sean Gilbertson, the CEO.

LARGE-SCALE MINES IN ZAMBIA

Large-scale mines in Zambia are owned by foreign entities or multinational corporation.

When Zambia privatised the mines in the 1990s, it reserved an insignificant shareholding of 20% in legacy mines; Kansanshi Copper and Gold Mine, Konkola Copper Mines, Kagem, Luanshya Mines and Mopani Copper Mines.

However, Government holds no shareholding in mines like Kalumbila.

The Kalumbila Mine, also known as the Sentinel Mine, is 100% owned by First Quantum Minerals (FQM),

The Lumwana copper mine is owned by Barrick Gold based in Toronto, Canada.

It is operated by Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold.

Similarly over 95% of commercial farmers in Zambia are mostly foreigners or foreign entities.

Zambia, there are an estimated 740 commercial farmers, operating on land larger than 100 hectares. Additionally, there are approximately 400,000 medium-scale farmers (20-100 ha) and 1.6 million small-scale farmers.

This is the same story to industries and manufacturing entities.
Clearly this makesnZambia’s means of production to be in foreign hands and therefore its economy is mostly foreign-owned.

FACTORS

A combination of poor government policies, poor leadership, system of education, a well-entrenched neo-colonial system, lack of empowerment tools, corruption and other inherent factors prevent Zambians from owning these resources but participate as workers or by-standers.

Time to change is now.

MAN SUED BY LATE WIFE’S FAMILY OVER SECRET MEMORIAL AND TOMBSTONE UNVEILING

MAN SUED BY LATE WIFE’S FAMILY OVER SECRET MEMORIAL AND TOMBSTONE UNVEILING

A man of Lusaka has been sued by his late wife’s family for allegedly secretly organising a memorial service and tombstone unveiling for his spouse.

Dumisani Banda, the deceased’s brother, wants the court to prevent Edwin Makuya from holding any further memorial service and placing a tombstone on Sinazeni Banda’s grave.

Mr Banda wants the court to restrain Mr Makuya and the latter’s distant cousin, Jinga Zunda, from holding Sinazeni’s memorial service in the absence of the deceased’s parents.

He further seeks a declaration that Sinazeni’s grave and site does not belong to Mr Zunda but the plaintiff and his family.

Mr Banda also wants an order that Mr Makuya and his family cannot, without the involvement of the plaintiff’s family, hold a memorial service in future, or place a tombstone on Sinazeni’s grave or perform any ritual there.

He also wants damages for mental anguish and distress.

In a statement of claim before the High Court, Mr Banda explains that Mr Makuya was married to his late sister, Sinazeni, who died on February 2, 2022.

At the time of her death, Sinazeni was married to Mr Makuya, who later remarried after the former’s demise.

“During her funeral, it was decided that she would be buried at [Leopards Hill] Memorial Park and that family and friends should put money together to purchase the gravesite,” Mr Banda submits.

Sinazeni’s maiden family and her former school and university mates contributed most of the money to buy the gravesite at Memorial Park.

“Suffice to mention that her husband (Mr Makuya) then and his family also minimally contributed,” he submits.

When it was time to buy the gravesite, Mr Zunda and Mr Makuya, and the plaintiff’s brother Temba Banda, were tasked to manage the issue.

“When Mr Zunda and Temba reached Memorial Park, they were presented with a contract which was signed by Mr Zunda, and Temba was the witness.”

Mr Banda adds that sometime in February this year, he received a phone call from the deceased’s friend asking if the Banda family was aware of a memorial service and unveiling of Sinazeni’s tombstone.
