SEAN TEMBO EXPLAINS  HOW FORMER PRESIDENT LUNGU APPROVED TONSE ALLIANCE COUNCIL OF LEADERS LIST

SEAN TEMBO EXPLAINS  HOW FORMER PRESIDENT LUNGU APPROVED TONSE ALLIANCE COUNCIL OF LEADERS LIST

He shares…..

ABOUT THE TONSE ALLIANCE LIST

By Sean Tembo – PeP President & TONSE ALLIANCE Spokesperson

I wish to confirm that the list of the TONSE ALLIANCE expanded Council of Leaders that was unveiled yesterday was finalized as far back as January 2025, just before ECL travelled to South Africa.

ECL instructed me to include the unveiling of the expanded Council of Leaders, as an agenda item for the Council of Leaders meeting that was scheduled for Wednesday, 12th February 2025, as he was expecting to be back from Johannesburg by that time.

When it later turned out that our TONSE ALLIANCE Chairman would be in South Africa for a prolonged period of time, l was personally worried that the operations of the TONSE ALLIANCE might be undermined due to the under-representation of the Patriotic Front in the Council of Leaders.

Sometime in March 2025, during one of my several telephone conversations with ECL, while he was in Johannesburg, l requested him if we could add a few more PF members to the TONSE ALLIANCE Council of Leaders, as a temporary measure as we awaited the unveiling of the full expanded Council of Leaders, once he returned to Zambia.

ECL asked me if l have specific names in mind, from the expanded list, whom we can add for the time being, and l said that l did. I proceeded to give him the following names;

1. Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya
2. Hon. Mumbi Phiri
3. Hon. Miles Sampa and;
4. Hon. Davis Mwila.

ECL gave me the go-ahead to add these four individuals to the TONSE ALLIANCE Council of Leaders, but further guided that they should just be ordinary members for the time being, and that their positions will only be announced during the unveiling of the entire expanded Council of Leaders.

I proceeded to add the said Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya, Hon. Mumbi Phiri, Hon. Miles Sampa and Hon. David Mwila to the Council of Leaders, as instructed by ECL. Suffice to mention that, subsequent to the inclusion of the four additional members to the TONSE ALLIANCE Council of Leaders, Hon. Given Lubinda and Hon. Raphael Nakachinda started fighting me, saying that l should not be engaging with ECL directly to discuss TONSE ALLIANCE matters, and that l should only engage ECL through the two of them.

I got the feeling that my two colleagues wanted to be the exclusive representatives of PF in the TONSE ALLIANCE, and that they did not want any further PF members to be added to the TONSE ALLIANCE Council of Leaders. However, such exclusivity is contrary to the vision that ECL had for TONSE ALLIANCE. ECL wanted all the vibrant PF members to be added to TONSE ALLIANCE, and given positions, so that they can quickly start the work of mobilizing for the 2026 general elections.

On 3rd June 2026, during a telephone conversation in which we were discussing the eligibility matter that l had taken to the Constitutional Court, ECL instructed me to start preparing for a TONSE ALLIANCE Council of Leaders meeting scheduled for Thursday, 12th June 2025, at which the main agenda item was the unveiling of the TONSE ALLIANCE expanded Council of Leaders.

He told me that he had completed his treatment and was just awaiting to undergo a minor medical operation that was scheduled for the following day, 4th June 2025, and that he would travel back to Lusaka over the weekend.

I did not want to call him on 4th June 2025, because l did not know what time he would be done with his operation. I however knew that he would call, as soon as it was convenient to him.

When news of ECL’s untimely demise broke, l was on my desk at home, working on the agenda items for the TONSE ALLIANCE Council of Leaders meeting that he had instructed me to tentatively schedule for 12th June 2025. I must say that l have never been more shocked in my life. I however apologize to anyone who was offended with how l expressed my grief. With how l cried so had. It was uncontrollable.

Anyway, let me end by affirming that during the entire time that the TONSE ALLIANCE expanded Council of Leaders was being drafted and finalized, Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba was the sole coordinator of this activity. Others were consulted, including myself, but Chris was at the center. Until the very final amendment was done to include Hon. Miles Sampa, subsequent to the reconciliation.

I therefore wish to affirm that the list of the TONSE ALLIANCE expanded Council of Leaders that was released by Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba yesterday, is the final list that was approved by our beloved late Chairman, His Excellency Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu. May His Soul continue to Rest in Eternal Peace.

Thank you.

SOUTH AFRICAN NGO DEMANDS INVESTIGATION INTO EDGAR LUNGU’S DEATH

SA NGO DEMANDS INVESTIGATION INTO EDGAR LUNGU’S DEATH

Lobby group Progressive Forces of South Africa is demanding an investigation into circumstances surrounding the death of former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

Lungu died at the Medforum Hospital in Pretoria on June 5 this year and it was reported at the time that he had succumbed to cancer.

At the moment there is a protracted court battle between the incumbent Zambian government and the late Lungu’s family, this as the Zambian government wants Lungu’s corpse to be repartited to Zambia for a state funeral, while the family wants Lungu to be buried in Johannesburg, South Africa.

PFSA spokesperson Bonang Seboloane led a delegation of civic members to the SAPS Gauteng Provincial Head Office in Johannesburg on Monday to hand in a memorandum of demands addressed to Acting Minister of Police Professor Firoz Cachalia and Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni, wherein the Minister and the Commissioner are called upon to investigate Lungu’s death.

“There are allegations that former President Lungu didn’t die of poisoning; that he was actually poisoned and that the South African government had a hand in his death together with agents of the Zambian government,” said Seboloane.

“Member of the Patriotic Front in Zambia (Lungu’s political party)Raphael Nakacinda said Lungu was poisoned with the help of the South African government and Lungu’s daughter Tasila Lungu Mwansa has also indicated that her father was poisoned,” said Seboloane.

“We are asking the SAPS to investigate this matter so that we can clear our name as South Africans,” she said.

There’s confusion, anarchy and tribalism in Tonse Alliance – PF Cadre Ibrahim Mwamba

There’s confusion, anarchy and tribalism in Tonse Alliance – Ibrahim Mwamba

PF cadre Ibrahim Mwamba has revealed that there is confusion, anarchy and tribalism in the Tonse Alliance as spokesperson Sean Tembo and his team do not want Given Lubinda elected as Tonse Alliance presidential candidate because of his tribe.

Mwamba stated that there was anarchy and confusion as all the leaders want to be presidents.

In an interview, Mwamba said there were also two splinter groups that have emerged within the alliance.

One of the groups includes Lubinda, Raphael Nakacinda, New Congress Party (NCP) president Peter Chanda, Cosmo Mumba and other PF cadres.

The other camp has Mundubile, Sean Tembo, Mumbi Phiri, Chanoda Ngwira, Mutotwe Kafwaya and Kelvin Bwalya Fube (KBF) and Chris Zumani Zimba.

It is believed that Sean Tembo’s group does not want to be led by either Lubinda or Nakacinda because of their tribes.

Mwamba said the Tembo group is arguing that they cannot be led by a Lozi or Tonga.

“Sean Tembo is selfish and people feel that Lubinda, as a Lozi man can’t lead. People are fighting Nakacinda and Lubinda. They believe only an easterner or Bemba can lead,” he shared.

“Mundubile wants to be president, everyone wants to be president. All these leaders want to be president. Even when they don’t like Nakacinda or Lubinda, those are the people ECL believed in.”

This came to light after Tembo with his camp failed to hold an illegal Tonse Alliance council of leaders meeting yesterday after some PF cadres disrupted it.

Mwamba said it was illegal for the PeP leader to attempt to have a meeting at his private residence.

“The Tonse Alliance recognises PF to chair or call any meeting. Zumani is just a Tonse member. We need to respect what ECL loved. You can’t hold a meeting at someone’s house. It is called unlawful assembly,” said Mwamba…https://kalemba.news/politics/theres-confusion-anarchy-and-tribalism-in-tonse-alliance-ibrahim-mwamba/

What magic is in Bill 7 that the President  do that to himself?- Laura Miti

Laura Miti writes….

We keep hearing popup statements that Bill 7 is going back to Parliament.

Sounds like the nation is being primed to expect the Bill’s retabling.

All I know is that, for that to happen without the promised meaningful consultation of citizens on what they want to see in their Constitution, President Hichilema would have to be prepared to go completley against his word.

If Bill 7 goes back to Parliament without the consultative steps the President categorically promised  to multiple groups that he, himself, invited to State House, he would have to not be believed  when he speaks to the nation.

Beyond the face to face baritone promise made to a room full of people, deferment of Bill 7until full consultation was announced, on the Kateks’ behalf, on the famous Orange Headed Paper,

Maybe the President’s people should read the second paragraph of the statement below, then give it to the President to re-read it.

Together they should then have a one agenda meeting – What did we promise the nation?  If they can still force Bill 7 through after that, ninshi batidoba.

What a huge risk to take – to lose the gravitas of your word, as leader.

The question would  be why? What magic is in Bill 7 that the President  do that to himself?

VETERAN POLITICIAN CONCERNED ABOUT CONTINUED ILLEGAL FUNDING OF FIRST LADY’S OFFICE

VETERAN POLITICIAN CONCERNED ABOUT CONTINUED ILLEGAL FUNDING OF FIRST LADY’S OFFICE

By Nelson Zulu

Veteran politician Akashambatwa Mbikusita Lewanika says it is illegal for government to continue allocating resources to the operations of the office of the first lady because it is not constitutionally recognized.

Dr. Lewanika tells Phoenix News that the practice of budgeting for the office has been ongoing, with allocations totaling K3 million in 2024, K2.3 million in 2025, and an estimated K1.8 million in 2026.

He has opposed constitutionalizing, formalizing, or funding the first lady’s office separately from the President’s office, arguing that it would institutionalize a non-existent office in the constitution.

Dr. Lewanika is of the view that this practice is like legalizing corruption and has called for principled treatment of the matter, regardless of the first lady’s occupant.

He hopes the UPND administration will review and rectify the budgetary treatment of the first lady’s operations, aligning public spending with constitutional provisions and redirecting funds to needy areas.

Tonse Alliance Meeting Disrupted, Key Decisions Delayed

Tonse Alliance Meeting Disrupted, Key Decisions Delayed

By Mark Ziligone

Confusion marred the Tonse Alliance Council of Leaders meeting, which was scheduled to take place today but was disrupted by unknown individuals.

The Council leaders had gathered at the residence of Alliance Spokesperson Sean Tembo, where the disruption occurred. Mr. Tembo explained that the individuals objected to the meeting being held at his home, despite clarifications that the official venue was a lodge.

As a result, the meeting was adjourned, but Mr. Tembo confirmed it will be reconvened, citing the critical and sensitive nature of the agenda items. With less than ten months to the 2026 General Election, the Alliance is yet to agree on a Presidential Candidate and finalize the unveiling of new Council members.

Earlier, New Congress Party Leader Peter Chanda attributed the confusion to a lack of communication regarding the change in venue, which he said contributed to the misunderstanding.

UPND LEADERS CAUTIONED AGAINST PUBLIC REBUKE OF OFFICERS AFTER MATAMBO’S POLICE CRITICISM

By Joseph Kaputula

Former Transport and Communication Minister Dr. Brian Mushimba is urging UPND leaders to handle matters more formally after Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo publicly criticized a traffic police officer for mounting a roadblock early in the morning.

In a widely shared video, Mr. Matambo is seen expressing concerns that officers were causing unnecessary delays on Copperbelt roads.

However, Dr. Mushimba says while acknowledging Mr. Matambo’s genuine concerns, he is suggesting that a more effective approach would be to engage the traffic police’s central command, which instructs officers on roadblock placements.

He has told Phoenix News that the increasing number of roadblocks and speed traps nationwide are part of the traffic police’s design and implementation.

Dr. Mushimba adds that criticizing an officer publicly, as Mr. Matambo did, could be demotivating.

KINGDOM HALL CHURCH ELDER CHEWS WIFE OF FELLOW CHURCH LEADER

KINGDOM HALL CHURCH ELDER CHEWS WIFE OF FELLOW CHURCH LEADER

A 19-year-old marriage of a devout Jehovah’s Witness couple has collapsed in the Matero Local Court after a Kingdom Hall elder was exposed for bedding the wife of his own “brother in faith,” Kalemba reports.

Truck driver Offrin Muyaya, 44, told Magistrate Harriet Mulenga that his wife, Mildred Kunda, had confessed to an adulterous affair with none other than Angel Simwanza, a respected elder in their congregation. Muyaya said the betrayal was so painful that he had no choice but to dissolve a union that had produced four children.

According to testimony heard by the court, Mildred admitted the affair, explaining that five years of “bedroom starvation” while her husband was away on long-haul jobs drove her into Simwanza’s arms. She told the court that the elder’s generosity went beyond spiritual guidance, as he set aside his Awake! and Watchtower magazines to give her a “pleasure-filled paradise” experience.

Kalemba further reports that guilt later consumed Mildred, prompting her to confess both to her husband and before a shocked Kingdom Hall congregation. Muyaya, however, rejected biblical calls for forgiveness and instead rushed to court to end the marriage.

In her judgment, Magistrate Mulenga granted divorce without compensation but rebuked both parties. She condemned Mildred for her choices, especially with a church leader, and scolded Muyaya for neglecting his wife. “What shocks me even more is the role of your church. How can a leader who preaches against adultery be the very one committing it? I honestly fear for the congregants,” she said.

The court ordered Muyaya to maintain the couple’s four children with K2,500 per month starting at the end of October.

Joseph Kabila: From Exile to a Death Sentence

Joseph Kabila: From Exile to a Death Sentence

In May 2025, former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila resurfaced after two years abroad when he flew into Goma, a city then under rebel control. His return drew large crowds of loyalists who described it as “a father coming back to his children,” while critics in Kinshasa revived allegations of his links to the M23 rebel movement.

By June, the Congolese Senate had stripped Kabila of his immunity, clearing the way for legal proceedings. He denied the charges, accusing the justice system of being politically manipulated. His allies framed the process as an attempt to silence him, while government officials insisted he had “nothing to offer the country.”

The standoff came to a climax on 30 September 2025, when a military court in Kinshasa convicted Kabila in absentia. He was sentenced to death on charges of treason, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The court accused him of backing M23’s insurgency in eastern Congo, which displaced thousands and destabilized the mineral-rich region.

At the time of sentencing, Kabila’s whereabouts remained unknown. His party condemned the ruling as politically motivated, while international observers warned the verdict risked intensifying tensions in the DRC’s already volatile east.

What began as a dramatic homecoming in May ended just four months later with the weight of a death sentence — a turn of events that underlined how Congo’s political rivalries and security crises remained deeply entwined.

From exile to a death sentence in just four months — Joseph Kabila’s story has taken a dramatic turn. What do you think this means for Congo’s future?

CHINESE WOMAN CONVICTED AFTER ‘WORLD’S BIGGEST BITCOIN SEIZURE

CHINESE WOMAN CONVICTED AFTER ‘WORLD’S BIGGEST BITCOIN SEIZURE

A Chinese national has been convicted following an international fraud investigation which resulted in what’s believed to be the single largest cryptocurrency seizure in the world.

The Metropolitan Police says it recovered 61,000 bitcoin worth more than £5bn ($6.7bn) in current prices.

Zhimin Qian, also known as Yadi Zhang, pleaded guilty on Monday at Southwark Crown Court of illegally acquiring and possessing the cryptocurrency.

A second person appeared in court on Tuesday to admit to their role in the scheme.

Malaysian national Seng Hok Ling, of Matlock, Derbyshire, pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court of entering into a money laundering arrangement on or before 23 April 2024.

According to the charge, he had been dealing in cryptocurrency on Qian’s behalf, “knowing or suspecting his actions would facilitate the acquisition or control of criminal property by another”.

Between 2014 and 2017 Qian led a large-scale scam in China which involved cheating more than 128,000 victims and storing the stolen funds in bitcoin assets, the Met said in a statement.

It said the 47-year-old’s guilty plea followed a seven-year probe into a global money laundering web which began when it got a tipoff about the transfer of criminal assets.

Qian had been “evading justice” for five years up to her arrest, which required a complex investigation involving multiple jurisdictions, said Detective Sergeant Isabella Grotto, who led the Met’s investigation.

She fled China using false documents and entered the UK, where she attempted to launder the stolen money by buying property, said the Met.

“By pleading guilty today, Ms Zhang hopes to bring some comfort to investors who have waited since 2017 for compensation, and to reassure them that the significant rise in cryptocurrency values means there are more than sufficient funds available to repay their losses,” said Qian’s solicitor Roger Sahota, of Berkeley Square Solicitors.

On Tuesday, the Court heard that confiscation proceedings had begun in an effort to retrieve more than £16.2 million from Ling, with the figure to be adjusted to reflect cryptocurrency rates when he is sentenced in November.

Some reports have suggested the UK government will seek to retain the seized funds. The BBC has approached the Treasury and the Home Office for a response.

Reforms to crime legislation under the previous Conservative government aimed to make it easier for the UK authorities to seize, freeze and recover crypto assets. The changes would also allow some victims to apply for the release of their assets held in accounts.

Qian had help from a Chinese takeaway worker named Jian Wen, who was jailed for six years and eight months last year for her part in the criminal operation.

Wen, 44, laundered the proceeds from the scam and moved from living above a restaurant to a “multi-million pound rented house” in north London, said the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) earlier this year.

She also bought two properties in Dubai worth more than £500,000, the CPS said.
The Met said it seized more than £300m worth of bitcoin from Wen.

Chinese media outlet Lifeweek reported in 2024 that investors, mostly between 50 and 75 years old, had poured “hundreds of thousands to tens of millions” of yuan into investments promoted by Qian.

Some of the victims, including business people, bank employees and members of the judiciary were reportedly urged to invest with Qian’s scheme by friends and family.

The investors reportedly knew little about Qian, who was described as “the goddess of wealth”.

“Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are increasingly being used by organised criminals to disguise and transfer assets, so that fraudsters may enjoy the benefits of their criminal conduct,” said deputy chief Crown prosecutor, Robin Weyell.

“This case, involving the largest cryptocurrency seizure in the UK, illustrates the scale of criminal proceeds available to those fraudsters.”

Monday’s conviction marks the “culmination of years of dedicated investigation”, which has involved the police and Chinese law enforcement teams, said Will Lyne, the Met’s Head of Economic and Cybercrime Command.

Qian is being held in custody ahead of sentencing, which will take place on 10 November – as part of a two-day sentencing hearing at which Seng Hok Ling has also been asked to appear.

UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis said the conviction sent a “clear signal” that UK wasn’t a “safe haven” for criminals.

“Money laundering erodes trust, undermines our economy, and fuels the rise of serious organised crime,” he said in a statement.

The BBC has contacted the Chinese embassy in the UK for comment.

DRC’s Kabila Sentenced to Death in Absentia

⬆️ Regional Briefing | DRC’s Kabila Sentenced to Death in Absentia

A military court in Kinshasa has sentenced former Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Joseph Kabila to death in absentia for war crimes and treason, marking an extraordinary turn in the country’s turbulent politics.

The 54-year-old, who ruled Africa’s second-largest nation for nearly two decades, was convicted on charges of supporting the M23 rebel movement that has devastated eastern Congo. The indictment lists crimes against humanity, treason, murder, torture, and sexual violence. Kabila rejected the case as “arbitrary” and accused the courts of being used as “an instrument of oppression.” His current whereabouts remain unknown.

The verdict follows months of mounting tension between Kabila and President Félix Tshisekedi. Once uneasy allies, their political relationship collapsed, culminating in Kabila’s exile in 2023. In April this year, Kabila returned briefly to the eastern city of Goma then under M23 control, claiming he wanted to help mediate peace. Instead, he is now cast as the architect of the rebellion. Senators stripped him of his immunity earlier this year, clearing the way for his prosecution.

The implications are seismic. Kabila is no ordinary defendant; he is a former head of state who inherited power after his father’s assassination in 2001 and remained in office for 18 years. His conviction underlines both the fragility of DRC’s institutions and the explosive politics surrounding the M23 insurgency.

Eastern Congo remains one of the world’s deadliest conflicts. The M23 rebellion has seized swathes of North Kivu, including Goma and Bukavu, and two airports critical for supply lines. The United Nations and several Western governments point to Rwanda as the real backer of M23, accusing Kigali of deploying thousands of troops across the border to secure control of Congo’s mineral-rich east. Rwanda denies the charge, insisting its role is defensive.

A ceasefire announced in July has failed to stop the fighting. Instead, the region remains on edge, with civilians paying the highest price. Reports of mass killings, rape, and displacement dominate the landscape, even as Kinshasa now escalates the legal war by going after its former leader.

Regionally, the verdict raises new questions. Will this ruling inflame old ethnic and political divisions inside DRC? Could it destabilize relations with Rwanda further, risking a wider war in the Great Lakes region? And what precedent does it set for prosecuting former African leaders accused of atrocities?

For now, Kabila’s sentence is symbolic. He is not in custody, and his support base, though fractured, still holds influence in Congolese politics. But the message is unmistakable: the DRC government wants to close the chapter on the Kabila era, even if it means rewriting the balance of power in the east.

A military court in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has sentenced former President Joseph Kabila to death in absentia.

Lieutenant General Joseph Mutombo Katalayi, who presided over the military tribunal, said on Tuesday that Kabila was convicted of various crimes, including treason, crimes against humanity, murder, sexual assault, torture and insurrection.

Kabila, who served as president from 2001 to 2019, had left the DRC in 2023 but recently visited the east of the country in an area controlled by the M23 rebel group.

The former president went on trial in absentia in July for his alleged support for the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, who seized large swaths of territory in the eastern DRC this year.

Kabila had previously denounced the case against him, calling the courts “an instrument of oppression”.

There was no immediate information about Kabila’s whereabouts after the military court’s verdict.

Illegalities and Thuggery have no place in the Patriotic Front- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Illegalities and Thuggery have no place in the Patriotic Front

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba Wrote;

What happened today is unfortunate.

A series of events where a Tonse Alliance Meeting occurred today, youths from the Patriotic Front stormed the meeting and disrupted it and the Zambia Police was called in to restore order, presents a picture of leadership failure.

My strong views on these matter are;

1. The Convening of Tonse Alliance Meeting without proper procedure was an act of illegality and indiscipline. Order and discipline forms the bedrock of any functional organisation, any revolutionary entity or formation presenting itself as an alternative leadership to the UPND.

2. The unleashing of youths from the Party Secretariat to go and disrupt another illegal meeting was another act of gross indiscipline. This was also utter failure to learn from the past where brutal force and thuggery reigned, and Zambians punished the Patriotic Front for allowing terror and political violence  to resolve issues.

3. The release of the so called list purportedly approved by the Late President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, is a clear abuse of his name, an act of utmost disrespect to his previous authority and his memories. Dwelling on this list or its substance or its merit is a futile exercise as it is bogus, fraudulent and should not attract any further attention.

Until we demonstrate maturity, leadership and direct our energy and focus on the vision to emancipate this country, our efforts will remain futile, and our actions will be betrayal and an act of irresponsibility to Zambians who are looking to us to provide national solutions and to provide alternative leadership.

Had UPND Become So Unpopular That Only Bill 7 Can Save Them? – Dr Mwelwa

Had UPND Become So Unpopular That Only Bill 7 Can Save Them?

By Dr Mwelwa

Bill 7 was deferred on the President’s own word — announced in a formal statement from State House. What changed? Why are we suddenly hearing whispers of its return without the promised national consultation?

Had UPND become so unpopular that the only way to keep power is through constitutional manipulation? Is this the desperate fallback of a government that fears the people’s verdict in 2026?

Will MPs be so shallow as to forget the Orange Headed Paper that carried the President’s categorical promise of consultation? Do they not realize that if they pass Bill 7 now, they are merely being used to serve one man’s agenda?

Is Parliament, the supposed guardian of the Constitution, so weak that it will allow itself to be reduced to an extension of State House? Will MPs not see that they are trading their dignity for crumbs of political favor?

What magic is in Bill 7 that makes the President willing to risk his credibility, his integrity, and his legacy? Is it worth losing the trust of citizens to force through a law they rejected?

Will MPs ignore history? Did the one-party state not fall when it tried to bend the Constitution to the will of one leader? Did Zambia not rise in 1991 because citizens rejected manipulation of their collective destiny?

Will MPs go home to their constituencies and tell farmers, bus drivers, civil servants, and marketeers that they voted for hunger budgets and then amended the Constitution to tighten the noose further? What answer will they give?

If Bill 7 is alive again, then what was the point of the consultations with churches, civil society, and ordinary citizens? Were they just a performance to buy time? Is the President ready to be remembered as the man who made promises he could not keep?

Bill 7 is dead — the nation buried it when it was deferred for consultation. To force it back is to dig up the grave and mock the people. Will MPs be complicit in such mockery?

When the final vote comes, will our Parliament stand as patriots, or will it kneel as pawns?

ON THE STATE OF AFFAIRS IN THE TONSE ALLIANCE AND A CALL FOR POLITICAL SOBRIETY- KBF

ON THE STATE OF AFFAIRS IN THE TONSE ALLIANCE AND A CALL FOR POLITICAL SOBRIETY

By Kelvin Bwalya Fube

Dated: 30th September 2025 | Lusaka, Zambia

Fellow citizens, distinguished compatriots within the Tonse Alliance, and particularly the youthful vanguard of our movement:

In light of recent developments within our political alliance, and in recognition of the fragile moment we currently occupy, I feel compelled both as a patriot and as a senior member of the Tonse Alliance to offer a word of clarity, a voice of reason, and a call to collective responsibility.

Let me begin by commending the leadership who, despite the prevailing tensions and emotional undercurrents, chose dialogue over discord by attending the Council of Leaders (COL) meeting convened to chart the way forward in this post-Lungu dispensation. Your commitment to the ideals of democratic engagement and institutional continuity is both timely and commendable.

The meeting was, at its core, a solemn exercise in introspection and strategy an honest effort to confront internal contradictions and recalibrate our collective vision following the untimely passing of our founding Chairperson, the late Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu (ECL). His absence has undoubtedly created a vacuum politically, ideologically, and emotionally but his legacy should inspire, not divide us.

Regrettably, what was meant to be a constructive and solution-driven platform was marred by unruly elements, primarily from within the youth ranks, who saw fit to disrupt a sacred space for leadership consultation. This behavior, which I unequivocally condemn, reflects not the revolutionary zeal of progressive youth but the manipulated energies of those serving narrow partisan interests many of whom, I must say with great concern, appear to have been co-opted by external actors, including some from the Patriotic Front.

To the youth of Tonse I urge you: do not allow yourselves to be weaponized in political games that ultimately undermine your own future. The urgency of this moment demands discipline, restraint, and maturity. Agitation without direction is not activism; it is sabotage.

Let it be clearly understood: the Tonse Alliance remains intact, resilient, and fundamentally committed to democratic ideals. We are fully engaged in crafting a clear and inclusive roadmap towards the 2026 General Elections, and we shall do so through structured dialogue, consensus-building, and strategic foresight not through populist disruption or emotional blackmail.

To the broader Zambian public: your concerns have not fallen on deaf ears. We are aware of the growing demand for transparency, accountability, and direction from within our ranks. These demands are valid, and they shall be addressed. The process of internal realignment is already underway, and as leaders, we are approaching it with both urgency and humility.

Our message is simple but resolute: Tonse believes in unity and unity shall prevail. We will not allow temporary storms to derail a long-term vision for national transformation. Let us recommit ourselves to the original values upon which this Alliance was built: inclusivity, justice, integrity, and national renewal.

In closing, I appeal to every member of this alliance and especially to our young people to act with political sobriety and a deep sense of historical responsibility. Let us allow leadership to lead. Let us not tear down what we have so laboriously built.

Let wisdom rise above emotion. Let dialogue eclipse disruption. And let unity remain our enduring compass.

May peace, purpose, and progress guide us all.
God bless the Tonse Alliance.
God bless our Republic

PF Fights Spill into Tonse, Alliance on the Brink

⬆️ BUILD-UP | PF Fights Spill into Tonse, Alliance on the Brink

What should have been a press conference at Sean Tembo’s residence turned into a street battle. Suspected PF cadres stormed the property, dispersing journalists, tearing down the briefing setup, and forcing Tembo himself into hiding. The police intervened late, but the message was already clear: the Tonse Alliance is not only fractured, it is now fighting in public view.

Hours later, Kelvin Bwalya Fube (KBF) tried to steady nerves, calling for calm and insisting that Tonse remained intact. His words, however, could not erase the images of cadres overrunning an alliance meeting. If anything, his statement confirmed what many already fear: that PF’s unresolved wars have spilled over and turned Tonse into an arena of disorder.

At the heart of the chaos is a question PF itself refuses to answer: who is really in charge? On paper, Robert Chabinga is the party president. His claim is not rhetoric; it is backed by recognition from the Registrar of Societies. In law, his word carries weight. Yet in practice, Raphael Nakacinda controls the Secretariat, Given Lubinda carries the “acting president” tag, and other factions are busy mobilising resources abroad. The result is a political organism with too many heads, none of which can deliver cohesion.

The South Africa trips, the expulsions of senior members like Davies Mwila, and the parallel meetings show a party tearing itself apart while projecting strength to the outside. PF cadres themselves now act like enforcers of whichever faction pays or commands them at the moment. It is a dangerous descent into lawlessness, and Tonse partners are learning the hard way that PF’s internal demons will not be contained.

Analytically, this is about more than disorder. PF has been unable to manage succession since the court closed the Lungu chapter. His death left a vacuum, and every faction now sees itself as the custodian of his legacy. Lubinda is blocked by tribal arithmetic, Nakacinda clings to procedure, Chabinga cites paperwork, while others push for an outsider like Willah Mudolo. The contradictions are so deep that even the alliance itself cannot provide a rescue platform.

The danger for Tonse is that it becomes collateral damage in PF’s survival struggle. Sean Tembo’s calls for order are met with violence. Smaller alliance partners like PEP and NCP are drowned out by PF’s loud and divided centre. Instead of providing the unity and strategy needed for 2026, Tonse is being hollowed out by PF’s inability to decide who leads.

The question Zambians must now ask is simple: can a party at war with itself, and dragging its alliance into the mud, credibly present itself as an alternative government? If PF cannot govern its own house, it cannot govern a nation. Until PF resolves its identity crisis between Chabinga’s legality, Lubinda’s symbolism, Nakacinda’s machinery, and outside names being floated; the alliance will remain a theatre of confusion.

The storm has broken. What happens next will determine whether Tonse survives as a serious contender, or whether it becomes another casualty of PF’s violent national identity.

SIMUUWE CALLS ON THE CLERGY TO PROMOTE UNITY, NOT FUEL DIVISION

PRESS STATEMENT

For Immediate Release
30th September, 2025

SIMUUWE CALLS ON THE CLERGY TO PROMOTE UNITY, NOT FUEL DIVISION

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has taken note of the remarks issued by the Archbishop of Lusaka, Most Rev. Dr. Alick Banda, on the Feast of the Holy Archangels and subsequent headline report in the Daily Nation Newspaper dated September, 30, 2025.

While we acknowledge the important role of the Church in fostering unity and dialogue, we wish to respectfully remind the Archbishop that the role of the clergy should be to unite the country, reconcile communities, and call for justice, not to promote division and hegemony.

As UPND, we firmly believe that Zambia’s democratic journey requires responsible leadership from every sector. President Hakainde Hichilema has consistently demonstrated unwavering commitment to the rule of law. Time and again, he has publicly reaffirmed that any individual who breaks the law will face the consequences on their own. It is therefore important for faith leaders to stand on the side of justice and unity, not to camouflage division as the only solution.

It is also worth noting that during the previous Patriotic Front regime, when violence, injustice, and the loss of innocent lives were rampant, Archbishop Banda did not issue the same strong condemnations. In fact, he attempted to persuade then-opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema to resign from politics, even as he was unjustly detained for more than three months.

Such actions raise concerns about selective moral judgment, which is contrary to the expectations of a clergy whose duty is to shepherd unity and peace.

We also appeal to the Daily Nation Newspaper to play its part in strengthening national cohesion. As a responsible media house, it should focus on framing headlines that promote unity and accountability rather than sensationalizing isolated incidents in ways that project division. Journalism must serve the public good, not political agendas or headlines that sow discord.

The UPND administration remains steadfast in promoting dialogue, peace, and justice. We urge Archbishop Banda and all faith leaders to join in building consensus, reconciling differences, and speaking truth to power in ways that heal and unite our people, not divide them.

As a nation, we must reject divisive politics and recommit ourselves to the founding values of “One Zambia, One Nation.”

⬆️ NEWS FLUSH: Confusion Rocks Tonse Alliance as PF Cadres Disrupt Meeting

Confusion has engulfed the Tonse Alliance after suspected Patriotic Front cadres stormed a press briefing led by alliance spokesperson Sean Tembo, forcing police to intervene.

The briefing, scheduled for late morning at Palm Valley Resort, was meant to announce resolutions of the council of leaders. It was abruptly moved to Tembo’s Ngwerere residence after the initial venue was overrun. Even there, journalists were blocked from entering, and some reported threats of violence.

The meeting had drawn senior opposition figures, including MPs Brian Mundubile and Mutotwe Kafwaya, as well as former PF officials Chris Zumani Zimba, Mumbi Phiri, and KBF. At the same time, another faction aligned with Given Lubinda held a parallel meeting at the PF Secretariat.

Witnesses said the cadres were mobilised by rival factions to disrupt Tembo’s gathering, underlining the deepening fractures within the alliance.

Police eventually deployed a CDF van to the scene, securing the premises and dispersing the group.

By broadcast time, Sean Tembo had not issued a statement on the incident. The unfolding drama exposes widening cracks in the Tonse Alliance, which is yet to consolidate leadership following the death of Edgar Lungu in June.

M’MEMBE CHALLENGES 2026 BUDGET, QUESTIONS ACCOUNTABILITY AND LEAKAGES

M’MEMBE CHALLENGES 2026 BUDGET, QUESTIONS ACCOUNTABILITY AND LEAKAGES

Lusaka… Tuesday September 30, 2025 – Socialist Party (SP) leader Dr. Fred M’membe has raised concerns over Zambia’s 2026 National Budget, questioning the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and protection of public resources.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/17DDga3ENz/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Dr. M’membe said civil society and Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) reports had shown that Zambia loses up to $3.5 billion annually through illicit mining, mis-invoicing, and financial leakages.

He wondered why the 2026 Budget failed to outline clear mechanisms for recovering these funds or preventing future losses, noting that the amount was equivalent to 42 percent of the 2025 Budget and could fully fund education, health, and social protection..

He also questioned the government’s decision to allow mining firms to collect a $1 billion advance payment for future gold sales without securing advance royalties, taxes, or an escrow account.

According to him, this left Zambia exposed in the event of company sales or bankruptcies.

Referring to the suspension of taxes on copper concentrate worth about $217 million, Dr. M’membe observed that the move coincided with delays in civil servants’ salaries.

He asked how the government could speak of “discipline” while granting tax holidays that weakened the Treasury and disadvantaged workers.

The opposition leader further highlighted the Ministry of Health’s write-off of K129 million in expired drugs, questioning what procurement reforms and accountability measures had been included in the 2026 Budget to prevent similar waste.

On the reported $80 million mistaken payment by ZESCO to a Chinese company, he demanded clarity on whether the money had been recovered and who, if anyone, had been disciplined over the incident.

Dr. M’membe also expressed concern that over 90 percent of Zambia’s copper exports were fueling the profits of First Quantum Minerals.

He argued that the 2026 Budget should have included transparent reporting of mining companies’ declared earnings compared to the taxes they paid locally.

While acknowledging the government’s stated success in raising domestic revenue to 22–23 percent of GDP, he asked what benefit higher taxes brought if billions continued to leak through corruption, illicit flows, and secretive contracts.

He pointed out that K92.6 billion (36.6 percent of the budget) was being consumed by debt servicing, yet no parallel recovery plan was proposed to claw back stolen or leaked funds.

Instead, he argued, citizens were being taxed more heavily while social spending was cut to cover debt obligations.

On agriculture, Dr. M’membe noted that the allocation of K9.2 billion to the Farmer Input Support Programme was described as “record-breaking,” but questioned what guarantees existed that it would not repeat past failures, including late delivery of inputs, poor targeting, and political interference.

Finally, he challenged the government’s claim that the 2026 Budget was the “most credible.”

He asked whether quarterly disbursement reports, procurement contracts, and mining royalty receipts would be opened to the public and civil society to allow independent verification of performance.

Meanwhile, Dr. M’membe emphasized that without addressing these issues, Zambia risked mobilizing more revenue only to lose it through the same systemic leakages and governance weaknesses.

MAGISTRATE ORDERS CASE TRANSFER IF ARRESTING OFFICER FAILS TO PRODUCE WITNESSES IN NAKACINDA TRIAL

MAGISTRATE ORDERS CASE TRANSFER IF ARRESTING OFFICER FAILS TO PRODUCE WITNESSES IN NAKACINDA TRIAL

By Nelson Zulu

Lusaka Magistrate Mwandu Sakala has directed that the seditious case against Patriotic Front-PF- faction Secretary General Raphael Nakacinda be handed over to a criminal investigations officer if the arresting officer fails to summon witnesses at the next court sitting.

The directive was issued following a request for an adjournment by State Prosecutor Changwa Jere, who informed the court that the arresting officer was unwell and therefore unable to appear or summon the required witnesses.

Mr. Nakacinda is facing one count of seditious practices under section 57(1)(b) of the penal code.

The charge stems from remarks he allegedly made during a radio appearance on august 21, 2024, in which he accused government of committing genocide by importing maize and mealie-meal allegedly contaminated with aflatoxins, substances said to be linked to the deaths of dogs and an unverified number of people.

And speaking to Journalists at the court premises, Mr. Nakacinda has called for calm amid the ongoing burial dispute of former president Edgar Lungu, saying there is light at the end of the tunnel provided talks are ongoing between government and the Lungu family.

POLITICAL ANALYST WARNS PF FACES 50% RISK OF NOT PARTICIPATING IN 2026 ELECTIONS

By Joseph Kaputula

Political Analyst Francis Chipili says there is a 50% chance that the Patriotic Front might not participate in the 2026 general elections.

According to Mr. Chipili, the PF has become too entangled to effectively contest in the 2026 general elections and is urging the party to strengthen partnerships with other political parties while accusing it of patronizing the political parties.

Mr. Chipili says the former ruling party’s internal entanglements and misunderstandings may not be resolved before the elections next year.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Chipili has also cited the ongoing legal battle between the Given Lubinda-led faction and Robert Chabinga faction as a significant obstacle.

However, PF Secretary General Raphael Nakacinda says the former ruling party has made genuine attempts to form alliances and has expressed confidence in the PF being stable, citing the victories it has secured in some by-elections.

PROFESSOR JONES KASONSO’S ENDLESS CONDEMNATION QUESTIONED

PROFESSOR JONES KASONSO’S ENDLESS CONDEMNATION QUESTIONED

By Chilufya Kasonde

Professor Jones Kasonso, a Zambian academic based in the United States, has in recent times positioned himself as one of the most outspoken critics of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND). From the comfort of his chair abroad, he has persistently condemned nearly every decision and policy made by the government, presenting himself as an ever-ready commentator on Zambia’s economic and social challenges.

While criticism is an important part of democracy, Kasonso has been accused of taking it too far, reducing himself to an “armchair critic” who has offered little in terms of tangible solutions. Instead of engaging constructively, his voice has largely been one of condemnation—claiming that Zambia’s economy is collapsing and that the people are suffering under the current administration.

Yet, some observers argue that if Professor Kasonso truly believes he is wise enough to steer the nation, then the most patriotic step would be to return home, roll up his sleeves, and contest the presidency. Others say he could channel his intellect into academia by serving as a lecturer at one of Zambia’s universities, shaping the next generation of leaders, or even invest his efforts into farming to contribute to the nation’s food basket.

Critics also argue that Kasonso, like many other Zambians in the diaspora, has fallen into the trap of political grandstanding while painting Zambia in a negative light before the international community. This, they say, amounts to a form of unpatriotism—condemning one’s country without offering practical contributions to its progress.

https://youtu.be/JFdJ0V5ksSE?si=mfVpXF8lmIzMNJdv

From the United States, where he reportedly enjoys the benefits of a developed economy, Kasonso continues to speak of Zambia’s hardships, seemingly disconnected from the day-to-day struggles of ordinary citizens back home. For many, this raises the question: is he truly concerned about the plight of the Zambian people, or is he simply playing to the gallery of discontent?

The truth is that Zambians are indeed facing economic challenges, and every voice matters in shaping solutions. But for those in the diaspora, patriotism demands more than just words—it calls for action. If Professor Kasonso truly wants to help, let him offer concrete solutions, come back home, and be part of the remedy rather than dwelling on criticism.

As some have rightly put it: Zambia needs problem-solvers, not just armchair commentators.

ZACA DESCRIBES 2026 PROPOSED NATIONAL BUDGET AS COUNTERPRODUCTIVE IN ADDRESSING ESCALATING COST OF LIVING

ZACA DESCRIBES 2026 PROPOSED NATIONAL BUDGET AS COUNTERPRODUCTIVE IN ADDRESSING ESCALATING COST OF LIVING

By Michael Kaluba

The Zambia Consumer Association-ZACA- has described the 2026 proposed national budget as counterproductive in addressing the escalating cost of living, financial inclusion and job creation and has warned of dire consequences for consumers.

ZACA Executive Secretary Juba Sakala tells Phoenix News in an interview that the proposed increase in toll fees for trucks will push the cost of goods even higher, as transporters will pass on the expense to producers and distributors, who in turn will push it onto consumers.

According to the budget, medium heavy vehicles with two to three axles will now pay K400 from K300 at the Michael Chilufya Sata toll plaza and K200 from K50 at all other plazas while heavy vehicles with four axles and above will pay K600 from K460 at the Michael Chilufya Sata toll plaza and K300 from K250 at other plazas.

The 2026 national budget, presented by Finance and National Planning Minister Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane last Friday, has also proposed an increase in levies on mobile money transactions, with the lowest bracket of between K1 and K150 rising from 16 ngwee to 32 ngwee, while transactions above K5,000 and K10,000 will now attract K8 from K3 previously.

Mr. Sakala says while government is seeking to raise revenue to fund the budget, it should have taken a more consumer-centered approach, contending that taxing mobile transactions heavily will slow job creation, make the business environment difficult, stagnate local economies and hinder both digital and financial inclusion.

PROFESSOR JONES KASONSO: A CRITIC WITHOUT A CAUSE

PROFESSOR JONES KASONSO: A CRITIC WITHOUT A CAUSE

Professor Jones Kasonso has become a case study in how political bitterness can consume even the most educated minds. Once a hard-core critic of Edgar Lungu and the Patriotic Front (PF), he positioned himself as a staunch supporter of the UPND in opposition.

Yet today, the very government he once defended has become the constant target of his venom, while he suddenly finds comfort in the same PF he once tore apart. The question then writes itself: is Kasonso destined to be a perpetual critic of whichever party is in power?

His recent condemnation of President Hakainde Hichilema’s meeting with traditional leaders reveals just how far his bitterness has gone. According to Kasonso, the President had “no right” to summon chiefs, describing the gathering as a parade of dignitaries too important to attend such a meeting. This argument not only reeks of contradiction but also exposes his selective reasoning. When previous administrations engaged chiefs for dialogue, he cheered. But when Hichilema does the same, it becomes an unforgivable crime.

Kasonso has also been relentless in attacking President Hichilema over diplomatic postings, accusing him of bias and tribal favoritism. He claims most beneficiaries of diplomatic appointments are the President’s tribesmates—an argument that has been widely dismissed as not only divisive but dangerous. Instead of recognizing Zambia’s need for professional representation abroad, Kasonso insists on reducing appointments to an ethnic equation, thereby undermining the very national unity he once claimed to defend.

The irony is glaring: Kasonso once railed against the PF’s culture of corruption, tribalism, and mismanagement. He championed the UPND as the alternative that could restore order. Today, he has conveniently forgotten his past words and has embraced the very PF he once denounced. His inconsistency makes it difficult to take him seriously—what guarantee is there that, should the PF return to power, he would not turn against them too?

What makes his current bitterness even more revealing is his open call for a change of government in 2026. Rather than providing balanced critique, he has now openly aligned himself with the PF’s desperate project to bounce back into power. For someone who once championed reform and renewal, this turnaround exposes not principled criticism but partisan bitterness masquerading as analysis.

What Zambia needs from intellectuals is not bitterness dressed as analysis, nor contradictions paraded as wisdom. We need voices that challenge with objectivity, that can hold leaders accountable without shifting goalposts depending on who occupies State House. Kasonso, sadly, has reduced himself to a political weather vane—forever spinning in the direction of opposition, regardless of the facts.

His attacks on President Hichilema, especially over engagements with chiefs, diplomatic postings, and his call for regime change, are not grounded in principle but in a compulsive desire to oppose. In the end, his commentary says less about the government’s shortcomings and more about his own loss of credibility.

Professor Jones Kasonso was once respected for his critical voice. But today, his bitterness, contradictions, and political flip-flopping have left him sounding less like an intellectual giant and more like a partisan heckler with a megaphone.
