The Truth About White-on-White Violence vs. Black-on-Black Violence

The phrase “Black-on-Black crime” has long been used in U.S. media and politics as a way to stigmatize African Americans, often implying that violence within Black communities is somehow unique or abnormal. However, when we step back and look at the facts, the truth is clear: most violent crime is committed within racial groups, not across them. In other words, white-on-white violence is just as real as Black-on-Black violence—but one gets politicized and weaponized, while the other rarely makes headlines.

What the Data Really Shows

According to the U.S. Department of Justice and FBI crime statistics, about 80–85% of violent crimes involving white victims are committed by white offenders, while roughly 85–90% of violent crimes involving Black victims are committed by Black offenders. The numbers are strikingly similar. The reason is simple: most people live, work, and socialize in communities with people of their own race, which means crimes of opportunity—robberies, assaults, even homicides—are usually committed within the same racial group.

Put plainly: crime tends to be intraracial, not interracial. Yet only the term “Black-on-Black” has been turned into a talking point.

The Truth About White-on-White Violence vs. Black-on-Black Violence
Charlie Kirk and his killer

Nationwide — The phrase “Black-on-Black crime” has long been used in U.S. media and politics as a way to stigmatize African Americans, often implying that violence within Black communities is somehow unique or abnormal.

Why White-on-White Crime Is Ignored

You almost never hear politicians or commentators use the phrase “white-on-white crime.” This is not because it doesn’t exist—it absolutely does. In fact, because white people are the majority population in the U.S., the raw number of white-on-white crimes is far higher than Black-on-Black crimes. What’s different is how society talks about it. White-on-white crime is framed as “crime” or “domestic violence” or “gang activity,” while Black-on-Black crime is framed as a cultural failing.

This selective language is not accidental—it’s part of a long history of racialized narratives that present Black communities as inherently dangerous, while treating white communities as the “norm.”

The Role of Poverty and Segregation

According to the Pew Research Center, a deeper look into violence in any community is strongly tied to poverty, inequality, and lack of opportunity. High-crime neighborhoods—whether predominantly Black, Latino, or white—share common traits: underfunded schools, lack of jobs, weak infrastructure, and high poverty rates. For example, Appalachia, a mostly white region, has long struggled with poverty, addiction, and violence, yet rarely is this framed as “white-on-white crime.”

Labeling violence as racial instead of structural shifts blame from failed systems to entire communities of color, while masking the real drivers of crime.

The Political Use of “Black-on-Black Crime”

The phrase gained traction during the late 20th century, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s, when politicians pushed “tough on crime” policies. By emphasizing Black-on-Black crime, lawmakers justified harsher policing, mass incarceration, and surveillance in Black neighborhoods. Meanwhile, similar levels of intraracial crime among whites did not prompt the same policy or media response.

The result has been decades of stigma, where the struggles of Black communities are blamed on culture rather than conditions, and systemic violence against Black people (including police brutality) is dismissed by pointing to “Black-on-Black” statistics.

The Real Conversation We Should Be Having

Instead of weaponizing crime statistics, the focus should be on what they really show: violence is most often committed within racial groups, regardless of race. The real issue is not Blackness or whiteness, but poverty, segregation, easy access to guns, underinvestment in communities, and a justice system that fails to prevent cycles of violence.

Acknowledging white-on-white violence alongside Black-on-Black violence exposes the hypocrisy of how crime is discussed in America. If the concern is truly about saving lives, then the solution lies in addressing inequality, opportunity, and safety for everyone—without racially charged narratives.

NYC Black Police Officer Fired for Making Jokes About Charlie Kirk’s Murder

Tanisha Blanche, a police officer at an elementary school in Westchester County, New York, has been fired after posting Instagram stories that mocked and appeared to celebrate the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. Officials said her remarks violated school safety standards.

Blanche had been serving as a School Resource Officer at Somers Intermediate School in Westchester County. Following reports of Kirk’s fatal shooting at Utah Valley University, she shared multiple posts that drew immediate concern from parents and staff. Her account was later set to private, but screenshots of her posts spread online, according to the New York Post.

One post read, “Well, that white sniper was overqualified when he put that hole in your neck hunni bunni.” In another, she wrote, “Welp! That didn’t end well buddy,” alongside a video of Kirk.

She also criticized the reaction to Kirk’s death compared to a recent school shooting, writing, “Why y’all don’t have that same energy for the school shooting that took place yesterday, but y’all crying over the man that was ok with gun violence….Make it make sense.”

Parents and staff were alerted after screenshots of her posts began circulating. The district said Blanche was then quickly removed from her role. Police were also notified about her social media activity.

Somers Superintendent Adam Bronstein told families that Blanche’s comments glorified violence and broke the trust required of her position. He emphasized that student safety remains the district’s top priority and confirmed that Westchester County Police will assign a replacement officer.

Officials stressed that the removal was immediate to protect students and maintain confidence in the School Resource Officer program. Westchester County Police have not issued a public comment on the case.

Zimbabwe Churches Must Pay Licences For Music They Perform During Worship, Says ZIMURA

Zimura Says Churches Must Pay Licences For Music They Perform
The Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA) states that churches must obtain copyright licences for the copyrighted music they sing in services. The message was delivered on Burning Issues with Oscar Pambuka, where ZIMURA spokesperson Alexio Gwenzi explained why places of worship, cover bands and venues need licences before performing other people’s songs. According to the earGROUND TV interview, which premiered on 15 September 2025, Gwenzi said licensing is required by law and helps fund royalties for composers and publishers.

Gwenzi said in the interview: “If you are an organisation, whatever organisation that you are, if you are going to perform another person’s intellectual property, you are infringing on their copyright and you should pay for it.”

According to the earGROUND TV interview, the Zimura spokesperson added that some large churches already hold licences and gave Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa’s UFIC church as an example.

The law, the licences and the controversy
Gwenzi told Pambuka that ZIMURA is a non-profit collective management organisation which licenses “music users” and distributes royalties to rightsholders. He cited the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act [Chapter 26:05] as the legal basis for licensing. According to [Veritas], the Act provides for copyright and neighbouring rights in Zimbabwe.

Introducing his point, Gwenzi said: “We license any business that is using music to push their business… broadcasters, hotels, lodges, restaurants, boutiques and television stations. Anyone who uses music.” He said membership stands around 5,000 creators. [I cannot verify this]

The interview also revisited ZIMURA’s disputed cover band tariff. Earlier this year, ZIMURA defended a US$150 (R2,604) per-show composers’ fee for bands that mostly play other artists’ songs. According to reports from March 2025, Gwenzi argued bands should price shows to include the fee. Later, on in April 2025, the Ministry of Justice suspended the tariff pending review.

Gwenzi said: “We create tariffs and deposit them with the Ministry… once stamped, we implement.” He refused to name high-earning bands but claimed some “make US$2,000 (R34,735) in one night.”

Churches, radio plays and what artists actually get

Pressed on churches, Gwenzi said ZIMURA’s approach is respectful of worship spaces but firm on licensing. He said fees vary by organisation, typically US$30–US$100 (R521–R1,736) depending on size and use.

He added that registration for artists costs US$20 (R347) and brings benefits such as funeral cover and an incapacitation allowance. In the interview, he cited a US$500 (R8,679) support figure agreed by members.

Gwenzi introduced the royalties discussion this way: “We pay for usage of music. If your music is not being used, you can’t get anything.” He cited historical per-play radio figures “around 7–12 cents” and said one of the **highest earners received about US$5,000 (R86,787) in the most recent distribution.

The interview also addressed leadership questions at ZIMURA. Gwenzi confirmed that Polisile Ncube-Chimhini remains Chief Executive while appealing a fraud conviction handed down in late June 2025. According to court records, Ncube-Chimhini was acquitted of forgery, convicted of fraud and has lodged an appeal.

Introducing ZIMURA’s stance, Gwenzi said: “She has led the organisation… we are in the High Court to appeal because we believe she should not have been convicted.”

Accountability questions remain
Pambuka pressed for numbers on annual collections and church tariff bands. Gwenzi said figures fluctuate and promised to provide specifics later. He also said most broadcasters pay, but “many owe” significant arrears to ZIMURA, which the organisation is pursuing.

PRETORIA HIGH COURT DISMISSES LUNGU FAMILY APPEAL BID WITH COSTS.Lungu family to pay  lawyer hired by the Zambian govt

PRETORIA HIGH COURT DISMISSES LUNGU FAMILY APPEAL BID WITH COSTS

The Pretoria High Court has dismissed, with costs, the Lungu family’s bid for leave to appeal.

The application sought to overturn an earlier court decision that ordered the repatriation of former President Edgar Lungu’s body to Zambia for a state funeral following his death on June 5, 2025.

In its ruling, the court says it is satisfied that no compelling reasons existed to grant leave to appeal, noting that the matter was so fact-specific that there was little to no prospect of a similar case arising in future.

The court has further ruled that there was no reason why costs should not follow.

The Lungu family had argued that the court failed to respect their wishes in its decision to repatriate the body.

Meanwhile, as the ruling was being delivered, the Zambian government and the Lungu family had already begun fresh talks to resolve the impasse over the burial site.

ZAMBIANS ARE ANGRY, READY FOR CHANGE – DOLIKA

ZAMBIANS ARE ANGRY, READY FOR CHANGE – DOLIKA

FORMER President Rupiah Banda’s niece, Dolika Banda, says Zambians are ready for change because they are angry and frustrated.

Meanwhile, Banda says Zambia’s democracy is currently at risk because the opposition is in total disarray, adding that she believes she is a credible opposition leader.

Speaking during a live stream with Linda Banks, Banda said the time you enter the political space does not matter if people are truly ready for change.

“We know the date of the election, for me it’s like an exam, right? We all know that the exam is coming on the 10th of July, and we are now in April or we are in February, even, Valentine’s Day and all of those celebrations. I know there are external factors involved; some of us are last-minute study people. Some of us are one-year in advance, you have studied”.

“My belief is this: if Zambia is ready for a change, and I believe Zambia is ready, not for a change of individuals necessarily, but for a change of the way we do things. For a change of the way we do our voting, a change of the way we do our finances, a change of the transparency issues, a change of behaviours with impunity,” she said.

“Our people are angry, they are frustrated, they are ready for change. And so if the people are truly ready for change, it doesn’t matter when you enter the fray, it does not matter when you enter the fray. I wouldn’t be doing this if I did not believe that there is an opportunity. And when we say people, remember we have a population of 22 million, and so it will be that some people are [ready], some people are not”.

Banda added that Zambia’s democracy was currently at risk because the opposition was in total disarray.

“And remember our opposition is in total disarray right now, total disarray. So democracy is at risk for this country at the moment. And I’m talking about the institution of democracy. I’m not talking about individuals; I don’t dwell on individuals, I talk about institutions and issues. If somebody doesn’t try to bring some semblance of order and honestly, our opposition, I try to look by the way and say who can I vote for?… And it’s not a true democracy when you don’t have a credible opposition, an opposing view. We have alliances right now,” she said.

When asked if she felt she was a credible opposition, Banda responded in the affirmative.

“I think so, yes I do. It’s like you can’t swim and you jump into a swimming pool with no armbands; you are going to drown, right?” responded Banda.

BINWELL MPUNDU DENIES SEDITIOUS PRACTICES CHARGES IN COURT

CELEBRATED and influential law maker Binwell Mpundu has pleaded not guilty to charges of seditious practices after allegedly making inflammatory statements linking Trevor Mwinde to the abduction of Hon. Jay Jay Banda

The case mirrors earlier convictions of former MPs Maureen Mabonga (Mfuwe) and Munir Zulu (Lumezi), who both lost their seats after facing similar seditious charges.

Prosecutors claim the independent lawmaker went further on December 29, 2024, urging fellow politicians to arm themselves for protection remarks authorities say threatened public order.

Appearing before Magistrate Webster Milumbe, Mpundu denied the allegations, and a not guilty plea was entered. His trial has been set for October 13, 2025.

## APPLICATION FOR LEAVE TO APPEAL JUDGMENT

**CORAM:** LEDWABA AJP, MUDAU ADJP et POTTERILL J (The Court)

**[1]** This is an application for leave to appeal against the judgment delivered by this Court on 8 August 2025. In its judgment, this Court upheld an application to repatriate for a state funeral and burial thereafter in the Republic of Zambia the mortal remains of the late former President of Zambia, Mr Lungu, in favour of the respondent.

**[2]** Section 17 of the Superior Courts Act 10 of 2013 (“the Act”) provides as follows: “(1) Leave to appeal may only be given where the judge or judges concerned are of the opinion that— (a) (i) the appeal would have a reasonable prospect of success; or (ii) there is some other compelling reason why the appeal should be heard, including conflicting judgments on the matter under consideration;…” As stated in *Ramakatsa and Others v African National Congress and Another,*¹ “…the merits remain vitally important and are often decisive.”

**[3]** The test for reasonable prospects of success is well established in that the applicant must convince the Court on proper grounds that there is a sound, rational basis for the conclusion that there are prospects of success on appeal.² In the context of section 17(1)(a)(ii) of the Superior Courts Act, a compelling reason for an appeal to be heard can include unique legal principles that a higher court should pronounce on.

**[4]** Turning then to the merits of the application, the applicants (“the family”) have a three-pronged approach. First, the contention was repeated that as heirs, they have exclusive burial rights in terms of the common law, which must be taken into account, considering the protections afforded by the Constitution.

Second, the family submitted that as the dispute between the parties arose in and is litigated in South Africa; the mortal remains of the late President Lungu is in South Africa; the programme in “FAA7” was drawn up by the Lungu family in South Africa; the relief is being sought before a South African court, consequently the South African legal system has the closest and most real connection to the dispute and the Court should have relied on South African law.

The attack further in this regard is that the Court erred in applying Zambian law to the dispute in circumstances where the Government of Zambia, as *dominus litis*, failed to place the Zambian law properly before this Court by way of expert evidence. In addition, this Court’s reliance on the decision of Kaunda as a source of Zambian law was incorrect because the late President Lungu was stripped of all his benefits as a former President during his lifetime.

Thirdly, it was argued that the order made by this Court is inconsistent with the terms of “FAA7” because any repatriation in terms of “FAA7” was to be carried out by the Lungu family by way of private charter. “FAA7” does not authorise any repatriation by the Government of Zambia, but the court ordered that the Government of Zambia should repatriate the body of the late President Lungu.

**[5]** The applicants’ counsel further argued that a contract cannot be concluded in respect of a corpse because it has no commercial value. This argument, in our view, is not relevant to the issues in this matter.

**[6]** The applicants further referred this court to the case of *Mohamed and Another v President of the Republic of South Africa and Others (Society for the Abolition of the Death Penalty in South Africa and Another Intervening).*³ *Mohamed* dealt with the removal by the government, whether by deportation or extradition, of a person to a foreign country for trial on an offence carrying a death penalty without the government first securing an undertaking from such a country that a death sentence will not be imposed or, if imposed, carried out, contrary to s 10 of the Constitution. The *Mohamed* case is distinguishable because it cannot be said that, on the facts of this case, it was necessary to first secure an undertaking from the Zambian government that their president will not speak at all events.

**[7]** This Court is satisfied that on the merits there are no reasonable prospects of success. As for the application of Zambian law, the Court considered that the deceased was on a temporary visit to the Republic for medical reasons. The main parties to the dispute are peregrini. The Kaunda decision is a leading case in Zambia dealing with state burials. The argument that the deceased was stripped of his benefits is of no moment. He remains a former state president with attendant burial benefits at state expense upon death.

The allegation that the respondent failed to place expert evidence of Zambian law before this Court is without merit, as the Attorney General is an expert in Zambian law. The mere fact that “FAA7” records that the parties will consult and agree as to who will speak at all events does not vitiate the consensus that was reached. Conflicts and disagreements about burial rights are a common feature in our courts. Some disputes regarding burial rights are settled after parties have reached agreements. This is common, although a corpse has no commercial value.

**[8]** The argument was that this matter raised unique constitutional issues and points of law as to whether the constitutional and common law rights of a spouse and children of the deceased, who are his or her heirs, may be trumped by a state pertaining to the remains of the deceased. Furthermore, for a Foreign State to assert a right of burial under its own laws, not South African law, are compelling reasons for the Supreme Court of Appeal to pronounce on. We are satisfied that no compelling reasons exist to grant leave to appeal simply because the matter is so fact specific that there is very little to no prospects that the same set of facts will confront a Court again.

**[9]** There is no reason why costs should not follow the result.

**[10]** In the result, the following order is made:

1. The application for leave to appeal is dismissed with costs, which includes the employment of two counsel on Scale C.

UPND HAS SENSED DEFEAT IN MPULUNGU… hence resorting to violence to instill fear in citizens  – KALABA

UPND HAS SENSED DEFEAT IN MPULUNGU  – KALABA

… hence resorting to violence to instill fear in citizens.

MBALA, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2025 [SMART EAGLES]

CITIZENS First party President Harry Kalaba has strongly condemned the UPND attack on his team in Mpulungu’s Chibulula ward which is scheduled to hold a ward by election on 18th September 2025.

Speaking when he featured on Luswepo radio in Mbala last night, Mr. Kalaba described the attack as unfortunate adding that UPND has sensed defeat hence resorting to violence.

Mr. Kalaba said the UPND’s resort to violence in by elections is aimed at instilling fear in citizens so that there is voter apathy.

” UPND has sensed defeat in Mpulungu and resorting to violence so that they instill fear in citizens and lead to voter apathy. The UPND is a violent party and that is embedded in their blood,” Mr. Kalaba said.

“We were just passing in Chibulula ward as we carried out our campaigns and they began throwing stones at us in the presence of the Northern province Minister Mr. Leonard Mbao who is also Mpulungu member of parliament. They were throwing stones so that they scare CF members, they have sensed defeat hence resorting  to violence, ” the CF leader said.

The CF leader adds that the UPND has been winning by election because  of vote buying and deception citing the tendency of distribution  fertilizer and paying of social cash transfer in areas holding elections.

” … that is not genuine victory, paying social cash transfer and distributing fertilizer in areas having by elections. This is all aimed at deceiving voters and making them to vote for the UPND. They are failing to pay farmers but busy wasting tax payers money in by elections, ” he said.

And Mr. Kalaba said President Hichilema’s lies will be his own undoing ahead of next year’s elections.

” President Hichilema talks alot and does nothing,  his lies will be his own undoing. People have lost interest and fatigued with the UPND leadership because of their lies. Zambians need leadership that will take care of them because the UPND leadership is a missed call,” Mr. Kalaba said.

DOLIKA BANDA: FROM BOARDROOM TO BALLOT BOX

DOLIKA BANDA: FROM BOARDROOM TO BALLOT BOX

By Brian Matambo – Lusaka,

BANKER STEPS INTO POLITICS

On EMV Tonight, Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba hosted a long-anticipated guest: Dolika Banda, a seasoned banker, financial analyst, and former director at the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

For decades she worked in global finance, seated at some of the world’s most influential boards. Now she is turning her attention to the presidency of Zambia in 2026.

ROOTS AND RESILIENCE
Banda’s story is deeply Zambian. She recounted a childhood shaped by loss when her father died in a car accident, and her upbringing under the guardianship of her uncle, the late President Rupiah Banda, and his wife Hope. Sent to boarding school in England at the age of 10, she learned resilience early. Racism and bullying toughened her spirit, but RB’s advice guided her: “The only way you can compete is to be better than them intellectually.”

Her career began at Barclays Bank, where she was first tested in unpaid internships that she turned into stepping stones. She went on to study in Cambridge, later working for Barclays, Citibank, and finally the IFC where she rose to Director for Africa and Latin America in financial markets.

A CRITIQUE OF ZAMBIA’S LOST PATH
Asked about Zambia’s current state, Banda was candid. She lamented how Zambia moved from being one of Africa’s most industrialized economies in the 1960s to one of the poorest today. “Every province had an economic hub, but mismanagement, whether by neglect or naivety, eroded that progress,” she said. She argued that leadership failures, not just external shocks, undercut Zambia’s promise.

On the Bretton Woods institutions, she drew from her experience: “IMF and World Bank are not inherently evil, but Zambia often approaches them from a position of desperation. We need to negotiate harder, put our people first, and stop confusing poverty reduction with true development.”

VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Banda called for bold ambition. Zambia’s GDP hovers under $30 billion, yet she believes the country should target $80 to $90 billion within a decade. Her strategy centers on mining, agriculture, and tourism, sectors she says can lift millions out of poverty if Zambians themselves are given ownership stakes. “Our economy is literally owned by foreigners,” she stressed, calling for stronger policies to retain proceeds locally.

She also highlighted the demographic dividend of Zambia’s youth, urging investment in entrepreneurship, technology, and practical education rather than empty rhetoric. “We need to scale what young people are already doing, from coding to agribusiness, and give them access to finance and markets.”

POLITICS AND PERIL
Ambassador Mwamba pressed Banda on why she was venturing directly for the presidency instead of beginning with a parliamentary seat. Her answer was simple: “When your moment is your moment, you cannot be intimidated. This journey has started, and I will give it my best possible chance.”

She acknowledged the risks, including arrests, brutality, or smear campaigns, but framed her decision as an act of love for Zambia. She invoked noblesse oblige, the moral duty of the privileged to serve. “I could live anywhere in the world, but I choose Zambia. I do not want to be an economic refugee anymore. This country deserves better.”

UNITING A DIVIDED NATION
On tribal divisions and toxic politics, Banda warned against top-down manipulation. “In our homes, we are united. My own family is mixed across tribes. Yet political elites have turned identity into a weapon.” She called for deliberate inclusivity in appointments and policy, echoing Kenneth Kaunda’s “One Zambia, One Nation” as a blueprint to restore unity.

A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS
The broadcast revealed a woman who has lived the global financial system yet remains deeply rooted in Zambia’s soil. Her candidacy adds a new dimension to the 2026 elections: a leader who blends international expertise with a determination to restore Zambia’s dignity.

As Ambassador Mwamba concluded, the numbers watching across TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and X kept climbing. It was clear that Banda’s entry into the political arena had struck a chord. Whether she secures a party vehicle, runs independently, or joins an alliance, her name is now firmly in Zambia’s political vocabulary.

MALANJI APPEALS AGAINST HIS 4 YEAR JAIL TERM

MALANJI APPEALS AGAINST HIS 4 YEAR JAIL TERM

Former Foreign Affairs Minister JOSEPH MALANJI has appealed against his four year jail term for possession of properties deemed to be proceeds of crime.

Mr. MALANJI has raised 13 grounds in the appeal filed in the LUSAKA High Court.

And, Mr. MALANJI has opposed the application by the State for the forfeiture his two helicopters and other properties deemed to be proceeds of crimes.

Mr. MALANJI has asked the LUSAKA High Court to dismiss the application by the state to forfeit his helicopters and three house in LUSAKA’s Silverest area deemed to be proceeds of crime.

He has argued that the state’s application is legally unsustainable because he has appealed against his conviction for possession of properties deemed to be proceeds of crime.

Mr. MALANJI also wants the court to determine whether his properties can be forfeited without resolving the interest of third parties.

The state has cross appealed against the jail terms of Mr. MALANJI and former Secretary to the treasury FREDSON YAMBA for proceeds of crime and wilful failure to follow procedure in the disbursement of public funds.

In the Cross Appeal, Director of Public Prosecutions- DPP- GILBERT PHIRI has raised three grounds of appeal, countering the decision of the lower court

Mr. PHIRI has contended that the trial court erred by sentencing Mr. MALANJI and Mr. YAMBA for four and three years respectively as their case had aggravating factors.

He has further argued that the lower court erred in law by acquitting Mr. Malanji on five counts where he was cited of possessing Gibson Royal Hotel in Kitwe, deemed to be proceeds of crime.

MUMBI PHIRI ENDORSES DOLIKA FOR PF PRESIDENT

MUMBI PHIRI ENDORSES DOLIKA FOR PF PRESIDENT

Former Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary General Mumbi Phiri has accused the current PF leadership of being selfish and failing to provide direction as the party heads towards the next elections.

Speaking in a live phone conversation streamed on Facebook, Phiri said she has lost confidence in the present PF leadership, describing them as individuals only interested in personal gain rather than the future of the party.

She expressed support for little-known politician Dorika Banda, who has declared her intention to contest the presidency.

Phiri said Banda’s bold decision gave her comfort, arguing that new leadership is necessary if Zambia is to move forward.

Phiri further criticised the PF’s record in government, claiming that years of disorganisation and poor governance left the country in crisis.

She pointed to cases where former leaders left office only to face jail while appearing to have amassed great personal wealth, which she described as evidence of selfishness and looting.

Political observers note that several former PF leaders, including Joseph Malanji and Bowman Lusambo, have been associated with immense personal wealth, with some described as billionaires after leaving office.

Despite this, their continued push to return to political power has raised concerns among critics who argue that their ambitions appear driven more by self-interest than by service to the public. Analysts warn that this persistence reflects a pattern where leaders, even after amassing great fortunes, still seek further opportunities to exploit state resources.

Phiri added that the decline of the PF has left some leaders attaching themselves to any presidential aspirant in order to remain politically relevant.

Her endorsement of Dorika Banda now raises questions about the positions of senior PF figures such as Raphael Nakachinda and Given Lubinda, who are seen as central to the party’s current leadership structure.

Malawi Votes: 7.2 Million Voters Head to the Polls

⬆️ REGIONAL BRIEF | Malawi Votes: 7.2 Million Voters Head to the Polls

Malawi heads to the ballot today in a high-stakes election that could redefine the country’s political and economic trajectory. More than 7.2 million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots across 28 districts, in an election that spans presidential, parliamentary, and local council races.

Out of the 7,203,390 registered voters, women make up the majority at 4.1 million, compared to 3 million men. Polling stations open at 06:00 hours and close at 16:00 hours, with voting taking place across an area of 118,484 square kilometres and a population now estimated at 22.2 million.

Seventeen candidates are contesting the presidency. But two names dominate the ballot: incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and former President Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). This is their fourth direct clash at the polls. Mutharika first defeated Chakwera in 2014, won again in 2019 before that result was annulled, and finally lost to Chakwera in the historic 2020 rerun.

Today’s contest is framed as a referendum on Chakwera’s turbulent first term. His administration came in on the back of the “Tonse Alliance” wave, promising a break from corruption and economic stagnation. Yet the years since have been marred by soaring inflation, food and fuel shortages, and allegations of graft.

The dissolution of Cabinet on the eve of the election only heightened the drama, signalling both urgency and fragility at the top.

For Mutharika, at 84, this may be his last attempt at a political comeback. He is betting on public frustration with economic hardship to tilt momentum back toward his party. But critics argue he too has baggage, with memories of corruption scandals under his administration still fresh.

Beyond the two front-runners, former President Joyce Banda and economist Dalitso Kabambe may not win outright, but they could complicate the numbers in a tight race where a runoff is almost certain. Under Malawian law, a candidate must secure more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a second round.

Parliamentary and local council contests also matter. Malawians will elect 229 MPs and 509 councillors, shaping the balance of power in governance and development planning. Strong turnout in rural districts where agriculture remains the lifeblood could determine not just the presidency but also the complexion of Parliament.

Key issues driving the vote include food security, job creation, corruption, and the cost of living. With inflation still above 20 percent and recent climate shocks devastating crops, many citizens say they will vote with their stomachs first. Youth voters, restless and digitally connected, form another decisive bloc demanding jobs, accountability, and inclusion.

This election is not just about who governs Malawi. It is about whether the country’s democratic institutions so celebrated in 2020 after the annulment of a flawed election can once again deliver credibility under immense pressure.

STOP ALARMING THE NATION, MMD TELLS OFF NEVERS MUMBA

STOP ALARMING THE NATION, MMD TELLS OFF NEVERS!

……If there was no confusion in 2021 under this same Constitution, where will the confusion come from in 2026?*

By Staff Reporter

The Opposition Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) has taken a swipe at its embattled former president, Dr. Nevers Mumba, warning him to stop alarming the nation with reckless and misleading statements.

In today’s News Diggers, Dr. Mumba claimed that failure to amend the Constitution would have a “devastating impact” on the 2026 elections. But Operation Save MMD spokesperson, Mr. Muyoche Mulondiwa, dismissed the remarks as baseless and self-serving, stressing that Dr. Mumba has no authority to speak for the party, having exhausted his two five-year constitutional terms.

“Since 2022, whatever Nevers Mumba has been saying is nothing but his personal opinion. He must stop misleading the public by pretending to speak for the MMD. If there was no confusion in 2021 under this same Constitution, where will the confusion come from in 2026?” charged Mr. Mulondiwa.

He further cautioned that a man who parades himself as a statesman should know better than to misinform and alarm Zambians just to remain relevant in the headlines.

DOLIKA BANDA SPEAKS OUT ON LUNGU FAMILY ORDEAL

DOLIKA BANDA SPEAKS OUT ON LUNGU FAMILY ORDEAL

Brian Matambo – Lusaka, Zambia

A HEAVY HEART ON LUNGU’S BURIAL
During her appearance on EMV Tonight, presidential aspirant Dolika Banda was asked a sensitive question: how she felt about the ongoing treatment of the late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu and his family, months after his passing on 5 June.

Banda was unambiguous on this subject. She described the prolonged burial dispute as a painful national embarrassment and called for leadership to rise above politics. In her words, “If the institution closest to the deceased insists on a particular way, then give them the leeway. The state has already demonstrated its intention to honor him, but we cannot keep a soul in limbo for months. This puts Zambia in a very bad light.”

Her clarity and compassion on the matter won her praise from many viewers who felt she had spoken the truth where others had remained silent.

UNCERTAIN FOOTING ON WORKING WITH PF
When asked about collaborating with the Patriotic Front or other opposition parties, Banda’s response was less definitive. She emphasized the importance of “shared vision and alignment,” but stopped short of committing to work with PF or openly backing an opposition front.

Her phrasing left some observers wondering whether she is still weighing her options. This perception has been fueled by speculation that she may be positioning herself for possible cooperation with the ruling UPND.

POLITICAL RUMOURS AND UNFINISHED DEALS
The speculation is not without precedent. Rumours earlier this year suggested that Banda would be unveiled as president of the People’s Alliance for Change (PAC). That transition did not materialize, and Andyford Banda retained the PAC presidency. Allegedly, sources close to the process hinted that UPND may have stepped in with an offer, altering the outcome.

These developments raise questions about where Dolika Banda intends to anchor her political journey. While she has been vocal about national unity and economic transformation, her choice of political vehicle remains an open question.

POSITIONING FOR 2026
On one hand, Banda demonstrated empathy and courage by tackling the sensitive Lungu burial issue directly. On the other hand, her ambiguity on whether she would align with PF or any other opposition party leaves her next steps unclear.

Whether her strategy is to keep doors open until the political landscape settles, or whether she is quietly negotiating with the ruling party, remains to be seen. What is certain is that her name is now firmly in the political conversation ahead of 2026.

LIVINGSTONE MAYOR’S CORRUPTION TRIAL TAKES DRAMATIC TURN AS ACC CLOSES CASE

LIVINGSTONE MAYOR’S CORRUPTION TRIAL TAKES DRAMATIC TURN AS ACC CLOSES CASE

By: Augustine Kapambwe

The corruption trial of Livingstone Mayor Constance Muleabai has taken a dramatic turn after defence lawyers successfully discredited the testimony of the State’s final witness, prompting the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to close its case.

Testifying before Magistrate Kasanda, ACC officer Mweemba Syadunka conceded under cross-examination that he could not prove the K180,000 allegedly withdrawn by State witness Monde Sumbwa ever reached the Mayor.

He further admitted that WhatsApp exchanges between the two did not explicitly reference money, nor was there any evidence linking Ms. Muleabai to an interest in Zamnuka Farms Limited.

Both the Prosecution and Defence have been granted five days to file written submissions. A ruling on September 29, 2025, will determine whether the Mayor has a case to answer or will be acquitted.

Ms. Muleabai faces two counts of corrupt practices with a private body under the Anti-Corruption Act. She is accused of soliciting K120,000 and receiving K180,000 in exchange for waiving property-rate arrears owed by Zamnuka Farms Limited.

LUBINDA STOLE 300, 000 DOLLARS DONATED BY LATE EDGAR LUNGU’S FRIENDS FOR THE FUNERAL  –  PF

A section leader of PF Brian Mundubile has accused another section leader of the PF Given Lubinda as having stolen 300, 000 dollars meant for Edgar Lungu’s funeral.

Mundubile also says Raphael Nakacinda stole 150, 000 dollars.

“There is hunger at the PF secretariat and I am tired of people calling me Honourable, Honourable asking for money and yet uyu Lubinda and Nakachinda stole money from businessmen who contributed for Edgar’s funeral,” lamented Mundubile.

OUR ADVICE TO ANTONIO MWANZA

OUR ADVICE TO ANTONIO MWANZA

By Koswe Editors

Dear Antonio Mwanza. Please ignore this picture of yours but focus on our EDITORIAL.

We have noted that you own a political party. This is very good. You are among the few not young people with a bit of hope to Zambians especially after Hakainde Hichilema is done with his last term in 2031.

Our advice to you now is that don’t mix with these very bitter and dying old politicians living in their 11th hour.

Believe us, trust us or not but as Hichilema will be sworn in come 2026 for his second term, M’membe would have lost half his teeth due to age, Kalaba will be looking forward to Bushiri for life miracles, Sean Tembo will be truly retired by Maza comedy.

Others calling themselves ichabaiche, will be without salt. Politics is about time. Short term and long term.

For now, focus on growing your party, mobilising resources and also ensuring that you are socially, economically and politically stable.

But if you want to lose your salt, join these bitter and sadistic old faces and see how you will last for weeks only.

If you play your cards well, you can even have one or two councillors or an MP and that would be a bargaining tool for you.

Anyway, for us, we were there when Elias Chipimo got on the political scene and many called him Obama and we are seeing a lot of male boys swinging their tails as possible presidents and while ambitions must be allowed, you got to manage the same or you risk burying your head in the sand like an ostrich in the desert looking for water.

Look around this country and ask yourself who will be President of Zambia after Hichilema in 2031 and if you can’t see anyone, then Antonio, grow your part with respect, not pompous and talking anyhow or anywhere. As a politician, when you talk, people must listen and not them saying aba nabo so ni njala ya munyokola.

All things being equal, you were going to represent Munali constituency one day but seems Thomas Sipalo is ahead of you as he looks focused on the same.

KATOTOBWE STANDS WITH LUNGU FAMILY AMID NATION’S GRIEF OVER DELAYED BURIAL

KATOTOBWE STANDS WITH LUNGU FAMILY AMID NATION’S GRIEF OVER DELAYED BURIAL

….as he graces the official launch of Fr. Nicholas Mubanga’s book “Extracted From The Heart”

Kitwe… Monday September 15, 2025 (SMART EAGLES)

Luapula Constituency PF Member of Parliament Eng. Chanda Katotobwe says the demise of the late 6th Republican President, Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, and subsequent events, which have resulted in the remains of the late President being in a mortuary pending unresolved burial for over three months is extremely grave and unprecedented in our country.

Eng Katotobwe noted that while the widow Esther Lungu, former First Lady, the children , late President Lungu’s relatives, the people of Zambia continue mourning, this weighs heavily on the nation.

He has assured the former First Lady and the Lungu family that he sincerely stands with them during this trying, traumatising moment for the family.

He said this in Kitwe during the official launch of “Extracted From The Heart” book authored by Fr. Nicholas Mubanga.

Meanwhile, Eng Katotobwe said the book beautifully contains both deep thought/details and deep inspiration in simplified easy reading for all.

“I’m not only delighted but profoundly humbled and privileged to stand here as Guest of Honour in front of distinguished, eminent, accomplished women and men, brothers and sisters from all walks of life,” he said.

“When I first heard the title of ba Fr. Nicholas book “Extracted From The Heart” I thought to myself this is going to be very deep or extra ordinary inspiration. Knowing ba Father, I further realised that this book shall beautifully contain both deep thought/details and deep inspiration in simplified easy reading for all, which is a hallmark of ba Fathers books.”

He described Fr. Mubanga as an extraordinary personality..

“Ba Father is a man who wears many hats – priest, lawyer, teacher, philanthropist, author – and somehow manages to wear all these hats with extra ordinary grace. Ba Father writes that he draws his wisdom from philosophers, mothers, teachings of Christ, and yet introduces novelty wisdom, and all this is wrapped up in one volume – that one volume is Fr. Niko,” he added.

“This evening, as we celebrate the audacious achievements of our Fr. Nicholas, we also carry in our hearts a shared deep sorrow and grief.  The demise of our late 6th Republican President, Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, and subsequent events, which has resulted in the remains of our late President being in a mortuary pending unresolved burial for over three months is extremely tragic. While the widow ba mama Ester Lungu, former First Lady, the children , late President Lungu’s relatives, the people of Zambia continue mourning, this weighs heavily  on our nation. To ba mama Ester Lungu and ECL family,  I say with all sincerity we stand with you.”

The book launch was held on Saturday evening, 14th September, 2025, at Lunte Lodge in Kitwe.

The other speakers were Fr. Brian Mulenga from Mufulira, Fr Salangeti, and Prof Muyunda Mwanalushi.

Others present at the colourful event were Hon. Kampamba Mulenga, former Luanshya Mayor Nathan Chanda, Hon. Micheal Katambo among others dignitaries

ZAMBIA AND ZIMBABWE DEEPEN ENERGY COOPERATION DURING BILATERAL TALKS

ZAMBIA AND ZIMBABWE DEEPEN ENERGY COOPERATION DURING BILATERAL TALKS

By Dennis Sikazwe Jr

Zambia and Zimbabwe have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector following high-level talks held on 10th September 2025 in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Mid-Term Review of the 18th Session of the Zambia–Zimbabwe Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC), a key bilateral platform for advancing mutual interests between the two countries.

Zambia was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, and the Minister of Energy, Hon. Peter Chikote. Zimbabwe was represented by its Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Hon. Professor Amon Murwira.

The meeting centered on identifying practical strategies to improve energy collaboration, with particular emphasis on cross-border power trade, infrastructure development, and joint investment opportunities. Both parties underscored the importance of enhancing energy efficiency and security as a catalyst for economic growth and regional integration.

Speaking after the talks, the ministers described the engagements as positive and forward-looking, noting that Zambia and Zimbabwe share not only geographical proximity but also a common vision for sustainable energy development.

The two governments pledged to fast-track ongoing projects, including initiatives in hydroelectric power generation and transmission, to ensure that both countries benefit equitably from shared natural resources such as the Zambezi River.

The Mid-Term Review of the JPCC continues to provide a vital framework for collaboration in various sectors, including trade, agriculture, health, and infrastructure, with energy emerging as a top priority in the face of rising demand across the region.

By reinforcing cooperation in the energy sector, Zambia and Zimbabwe aim to strengthen bilateral relations while contributing to the broader objectives of regional integration under the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

HH Tackles Land Corruption

HH Tackles Land Corruption
By Dickson Jere

The President has taken on issues of corruption at Ministry of Lands and pledged to end the vice with the introduction of digital platforms that will replace face-to-face interaction with people.

In his speech to Parliament, President Hakainde Hichilema said every Zambian must be given an opportunity to own land and all those who were allocated farmland in resettlement areas and farming blocks should be given title deeds.

“In order to eliminate inefficiencies, human interference, and corruption in our land administration, we are rolling out a comprehensive digitization program that includes mapping all land parcels,” the President said.

“We are introducing land access windows, tailored for small-scale farmers, entrepreneurs, cooperatives, and investors to ensure equitable distribution and use of land across sectors,” he said.

He noted that 70% of our own land is under customary system and urged the traditional leaders to help formalize customary land transactions and align their alienation of land to match with national use plans.

“Land titles will assure security of tenure, unlock access to credit, stimulate rural enterprises and empower families to pass down wealth across generations,” the President said.

He noted that there has been delays in disposing off land disputes due to the lack of capacity at the Lands Tribunal.

“We will significantly strengthen the lands tribunal by increasing budgetary support and decentralizing its operations,” the President told Parliament.

This part of the speech was good music to my ears. The President speech in this aspect captured what I have been calling and advocating for. These are the reforms we need and not that proposed Bill 13 that would have worsened the situation at the Ministry of Lands to give powers to Registrar to cancel titles.

If I was debating the Presidential Speech in Parliament, I would make the following proposals;

1. Government should immediately table the Bill pursuant to Article 233 of the Constitution to operationalize the Lands Commission, which Will then be established in all provinces to cater for land administration and alienation.

2. Bring a Bill that will transform the entire Lands and Deeds Registry into a digital registry and make sure that all digital titles match the situation on the ground in terms of allocation, land size and all.

3. Lands Tribunal should be given timelines in which to dispose off land disputes so that disputes do not unnecessarily take long. This has been the main complaint of many Zambians.

4. We need national Indaba with all chiefs to discuss the land tenure system as well as alienation of land in customary areas. We need to find ways of giving titles even “customary titles” with well marked diagrams so that each person knows the actual land size and boundaries. This can be given by the chiefs themselves and such should be recognized as valid proof of ownership.

Well done President and I hope with this speech on land, the proposed Bill 13 can now be rested and allow for thorough reforms as announced by the President in Parliament.

UPND Alliance Seeks Fresh Blood

⬆️ BUILD UP | UPND Alliance Seeks Fresh Blood

The ruling UPND Alliance is entering a new phase of expansion. Spokesperson Leslie Chikuse has confirmed that ten political parties have signaled their intention to join the coalition, which already counts eleven members around President Hakainde Hichilema.

“We are about 11 members in the UPND Alliance as we speak today. We have another 10 that have already declared their willingness to join, although they are still going through the formalities of concertizing their membership,” Chikuse told reporters.

This is both continuity and renewal. Since its formation in 2020, the alliance has been both a platform for partnership and a revolving door. Some parties, like Kelvin Bwalya Fube’s Zambia Must Prosper and Kaluba Simuyemba’s Movement for Change and Equality (M4CE), have exited. Yet others see value in attaching themselves to the ruling party ahead of 2026.

Chikuse admits this churn is part of the democratic process. “Of course, in a democracy, you lose some members and then you receive others. That is part of renewing partnerships,” he said.

But the new membership drive comes with caution. Chikuse warned that those seeking entry should come with “the heart of the Zambian people,” not with personal conditions or positional bargaining. “Let’s not have people coming with conditions such as demanding to be Speaker or threatening to leave if they are not given positions. The focus should be on national issues such as lowering the cost of living and addressing the country’s debt obligations,” he stressed.

The wider context matters. With the 2026 elections inching closer, alliances are once again becoming political currency. For UPND, more partners expand legitimacy and broaden its footprint across regions. For smaller parties, joining an alliance already in power offers visibility and access they may not command alone.

Still, history shows alliances rarely hold under pressure. The PF once commanded a broad coalition only to fracture in government. The UPND Alliance itself has weathered exits and quiet discontent since assuming office. The task now is whether Hichilema’s coalition can transform numerical growth into genuine stability.

The coming weeks will be telling. Chikuse revealed that the alliance leadership will soon meet the ten interested parties to formalize discussions.

“The moment they join, they will be treated like any other member. There is nothing like ‘new’ members once you are in, you are part of the alliance,” he insisted.

For now, the ruling alliance appears to be on a recruitment drive, but the bigger test will be unity when electoral battle lines harden.

GOVERNANCE ACTIVIST URGES OPPOSITION TO PUT HOUSE IN ORDER FOR 2026 ELECTIONS

GOVERNANCE ACTIVIST URGES OPPOSITION TO PUT HOUSE IN ORDER FOR 2026 ELECTIONS

GOVERNANCE activist Reuben Lifuka is calling on opposition parties to get their houses in order and prepare for the 2026 general elections.

Mr. Lifuka is concerned that the opposition, particularly the Patriotic Front-PF, is far from ready to compete effectively in the elections and hopes the former ruling party will soon identify and rally behind a leader who can ensure a strong opposition.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Lifuka is of the view that the UPND government has contributed to the instability of the main opposition by not providing a conducive environment for opposition party mobilization.

He says the UPND government has continued using the police to deny permits to the opposition to hold rallies, thereby stifling their ability to engage with supporters.

CITIZENS FIRST PARTY STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S ADDRESS TO THE FIFTH SESSION OF THE 13TH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

CITIZENS FIRST PARTY STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S ADDRESS TO THE FIFTH SESSION OF THE 13TH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

The Citizens First Party, under the leadership of President Harry Kalaba, has taken note of the address by His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema to the National Assembly on Friday, 12th September, 2025.

While we recognise the importance of the occasion and the breadth of issues covered, we believe that the speech was long on self-praise but short on addressing the real hardships that ordinary Zambians are facing today.

President Hichilema spoke of “consolidating economic and social gains”, yet the lived reality is that the cost of living remains unbearable for millions of households, unemployment continues to bite the youth, and loadshedding has crippled small businesses. A true consolidation of gains must be reflected in the lives of citizens, not just in statistics read in Parliament.

President Kalaba has repeatedly emphasised that Zambia needs a people-centred economic transformation—one that ensures food security, affordable energy, accessible healthcare, and meaningful jobs. The CF Party maintains that agricultural surpluses and mining expansions are commendable on paper, but without deliberate policies to reduce poverty and empower communities at the grassroots, such growth will remain elusive to ordinary citizens.

We further note the President’s assurances on good governance, decentralisation, and the fight against corruption. However, these promises ring hollow when citizens continue to witness selective justice, slow delivery of services, and widening inequality. President Kalaba has consistently argued that good governance must not be about speeches, but about action that restores trust between government and its people.

As Citizens First, we reaffirm our commitment to providing an alternative government that places citizens at the centre of national development. We will continue to engage Zambians with policies that prioritise affordable food, jobs for the youth, stable energy supply, and a governance system that is fair, transparent, and accountable to the people.

The time has come for a leadership that not only counts economic gains but ensures that every household, every farmer, every worker, and every youth feels the impact of those gains. Citizens First stands ready to provide that leadership.

POLICE UNCOVER MASSIVE STOCK TH£FT SYNDICATE IN NAMWALA

POLICE UNCOVER MASSIVE STOCK TH£FT SYNDICATE IN NAMWALA

Namwala…. Tuesday September 16, 2025

POLICE in Southern Province have unearthed a large-scale stock theft operation in Namwala District, where more than 130 stolen cattle were slaüghtered and secretly buried to conceal evidence.

The breakthrough followed a tip-off from members of the public, leading officers to two farms where the remains of the animals were discovered buried in over 15 pits.

According to Southern Province Commanding Officer Auxensio Daka, 65 carcasses were recovered from the farm of Mr. Shepande Kalapula in Kawilizhi area under Chief Mukobela, while another 65 were found at the farm of Mr. Madilu Kalapula of Namisamu Fishing Camp.

“Ear tags found in some of the pits helped us identify 26 of the recovered animals as belonging to Mr. Benford Mwiya of Namwala District,” Mr. Daka said.

“Investigations are ongoing to establish the owners of the remaining animals.”

Police have since arrested 16 suspects, all of them related, in connection with the theft.

They face charges of stock theft and possession of property reasonably suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.

Mr. Daka described the case as one of the most serious stock theft investigations in recent years and praised the role of community members in alerting police.

“We urge cattle owners who may be missing animals, as well as any members of the public with relevant information, to come forward. Stock theft is a crime we treat with utmost seriousness, and we will ensure perpetrators are brought to justice,” he said.

Violet Ngalande Skeffa of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who was expected to contest the parliamentary seat for Ntchisi South, has officially withdrawn from the race, even though she met all the eligibility requirements.

POLICE FORCIBLY REMOVE GAMBIAN AUDITOR GENERAL IN RESHUFFLE ROW

POLICE FORCIBLY REMOVE GAMBIAN AUDITOR GENERAL IN RESHUFFLE ROW

POLICE have physically removed The Gambia’s auditor general, Momodou Ceesay, from his office after he refused to give up the post, in a government reshuffle carried out by President Adama Barrow.

Ceesay, who has spent almost three years as Auditor General in the West African state, says he had turned down Barrow’s recent offer to become Trade Minister.

Yet the President insists that Ceesay originally agreed, but later changed his mind.

The row has angered many Gambians, with some accusing the President of trying to replace Ceesay with someone who will shield him from corruption allegations.

The President has promoted the Director of Internal Audit, Cherno Amadou Sowe, to the post of Auditor General, but he has not reported to work following the public backlash.

On Monday, plain-clothes police were sent to the Auditor General’s office to arrest Ceesay and install his successor.

But Ceesay’s staff confronted the officers and stalled them, in scenes that were broadcast live on the social media accounts of local news outlets.

It was not until back-up forces arrived that the Auditor General was finally ejected from a press conference he was giving and escorted out of the complex to his lawyer’s office.

This action triggered a swift response from young people, who called on the President to reinstate Ceesay, and threatened to take to the streets in the outskirts of the capital, Banjul, until their demands were met.

“He refused your appointment. Now you forcibly remove him out of the office? Are the Gambian people not watching?” asked Gambian activist Kemo Fatty, expressing his fury in a clip which is circulating online.

“If the Auditor General does not return to office today, President Barrow will leave the State House today,” he threatened.

Fatty and another anti-corruption activist, Alieu Bah, were later arrested by police, as they gathered at the national audit office and prepared for a press conference.

In recent months, Barrow’s government has been rocked by numerous protests following an investigation by a local newspaper, The Republic, alleging that assets belonging to the disgraced former President Yahya Jammeh had been distributed among close aides of Barrow. He has denied any wrongdoing.

In a statement, Barrow’s office said the government remained “firmly committed to the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and the responsible management of public finances”.

Ceesay’s appointment as Trade Minister was “based solely on his qualifications and experience”, and was not intended “to interfere with the operations of the National Audit Office”.

Three accused in Ramaphosa farm robbery plead not guilty

Three accused in Ramaphosa farm robbery plead not guilty

The three individuals charged in connection with the robbery at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm have pleaded not guilty to all charges in the Modimolle Regional Court on Monday.

Immanuela David, along with siblings Froliana and Ndilinasho Joseph, are accused of theft, housebreaking, and conspiracy to commit housebreaking with intent to steal. David also faces a money laundering charge.

The alleged robbery took place in February 2020, when the trio reportedly discovered a large sum of cash hidden inside a couch at the farm.

The money was said to be part of a payment from a Sudanese businessman for buffalo bred on the property. The three were arrested in June 2022 following an investigation into the incident.

All three defendants denied any wrongdoing, setting the stage for a contested trial. The prosecution is expected to call multiple witnesses as the case unfolds.

DA calls on Cachalia to protect clinics and hospitals from Operation Dudula intimidation

DA calls on Cachalia to protect clinics and hospitals from Operation Dudula intimidation

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on Acting Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia to urgently deploy public order policing units to safeguard healthcare facilities and ensure that foreign nationals can access medical services without intimidation.

The appeal comes in response to reports that members of Operation Dudula have been blocking patients, particularly foreign nationals, from entering hospitals and clinics in provinces including Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

The DA condemned these actions as “despicable hindrance and intimidation” and warned that preventing access to healthcare could have serious public health consequences.

“Stopping communicable diseases demands that every sick person be treated in public health facilities. Healthcare is a right that belongs to us all, no matter where we come from,” the party stated.

The DA has submitted parliamentary questions to the Department of Health, seeking clarity on measures in place to protect patients.

The party emphasized that South Africa’s Constitution guarantees the right of every individual, regardless of nationality, to access healthcare services, including emergency and reproductive care.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema also joined the call for intervention, urging authorities to formally investigate Operation Dudula for actions that could inflame tensions in vulnerable communities.

As the situation unfolds, the DA is pushing for immediate police action to ensure healthcare facilities remain safe and accessible to all, warning that failure to act could endanger public health nationwide.

Fake Lawyer Who Swindled ‘Clients’ Out Of Over R1 Million Gets A 20-Year Prison Sentence

The courts have handed a man who masqueraded as a fake lawyer and swindled innocent people out of over R1 million a 20-year prison sentence.

A North West man has been handed a devastating twenty-year prison term for orchestrating a sophisticated fraud that saw him masquerade as a qualified legal representative and swindle clients out of a fortune exceeding R1 million.

Kagiso Josias Selomane, a 45-year-old from Rustenburg, was convicted on nine separate counts of fraud this week after a protracted legal process. His deceptive spree, which ran from 2011 to 2015, targeted vulnerable individuals seeking legal counsel in Rustenburg, other parts of the North West, and Johannesburg.

Details Of The Criminal Spree Exposed In Court
The court heard how Selomane’s scheme was brazen in its execution. He would approach potential clients, often those entangled in emotionally charged divorce or labour disputes, and offer his services as a lawyer. He demanded substantial upfront payments for legal services that he never intended to provide.

Selomane would even escort his victims to actual courthouses to perpetuate the lie. He would occupy empty courtrooms with them, fabricating entire proceedings.

He stated,

“He would sit with them in vacant courtrooms, pretending to represent them, and would later claim their case had been postponed. All of this was a complete fabrication; no such cases existed on the roll.”

Fake Lawyer Slapped With A 20-Year Prison Sentence
The intricate web of lies finally unravelled on 20 October 2015 when multiple victims, realising they had been duped, approached the authorities. During the trial, the State argued that the accused’s actions were calculated and malicious.

State Advocate Rodger Mareume was quoted in proceedings, emphasising that

“Selomane’s guilty plea was not a genuine display of remorse but a tactical move. He has not taken any steps to repay the victims he defrauded, showing a distinct lack of contrition for his actions.”

Passing sentence, Magistrate Samuel Mabogo focused on the deliberate and sustained nature of the crimes. The court also took into account Selomane’s previous convictions for fraud, which painted a picture of a repeat offender. While receiving individual sentences for each count, they will run concurrently, resulting in an effective twenty-year prison term. Selomane was also formally declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Cyril Ramaphosa has admitted that it pained him that the DA-led municipalities always outperform the ANC ones in delivering services

President Cyril Ramaphosa has admitted that it pained him that the DA-led municipalities always outperform the ANC ones in delivering services, urging party councillors to up their game.

Addressing the ANC’s roll call for councillors event at the FNB Stadium in Soweto, Ramaphosa told the party members to learn from other municipalities that are run in better ways than they are.

“I can name it here because there’s nothing wrong with competition. They are often DA-controlled municipalities. We need to ask ourselves, what is it that they are doing that is better than what we are doing?

“And there’s nothing wrong with us saying we want to go and see what Cape Town is doing. We want to go and see what Stellenbosch is doing,” he said.

He added that they should learn from their craft to move up the ladder, saying “We cannot forever stay at the bottom.”

“It hurts me deeply when I continue to see that our municipalities sometimes tend to move even backwards. And you are the people who can improve that. The audit outcomes are important.”

According to Ramaphosa, the Auditor General, told him that a number of the ANC-led municipalities’ financial statements were not even prepared at the council level but outside.

He emphasised that the ANC should deploy capable people to run local government.

“Our country is not short of people who understand numbers. It’s not short of people who understand accounting. Let us go and get people who understand accounting,” he said.

Meanwhile, ANC national chairperson, Gwede Mantashe, addressed his party’s council members, saying that while they are good at singing and creating noise, they are not good at managing councils.

“I know we have a lot of singing councillors but we have no councils. You all sing well but capacity dololo [nothing],” he told a rowdy crowd.

The announcement comes as Malawians prepare to vote tomorrow in presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections.

Meanwhile, President Chakwera has promised free nationwide internet access and free smartphones for all students if he is re-elected to office.

High Court Orders 159 Gamblers to Repay R13 Million Won From Betting Glitch

Court Orders 159 Gamblers to Return R13 Million Won From Betting Glitch

The Pietermaritzburg High Court has ruled that 159 gamblers must pay back R13 million they collectively won after exploiting a technical fault in an online betting game.

The case stems from December 2023, when players placed wagers on Betgames Instant Lucky 7, a lottery-style game offered by Hollywood sportsbook KwaZulu-Natal (Pty) Ltd.

Gamblers Exploited Glitch
According to IOL, the game, which was created by a third-party provider, allowed participants to place bets every 30 seconds.

A system glitch meant that the wagers were not deducted from players’ accounts, effectively letting them gamble without risking their deposits.

Punters quickly noticed the loophole and took advantage, with winnings ranging from R3,000 to nearly half a million rand.

One of the players, Nsikayesizwe Thobelani Gcabashe, told the court that he deposited R50 on December 28 and R850 the following day. Over four days, he placed 40 bets and won R443,700, which he later withdrew and transferred into his personal bank account.

Hollywood Demands Repayment
When Hollywood identified the error, the company contacted all winners, requesting they return the funds.

The gamblers refused, prompting Hollywood to approach the court. Judge Jacqueline Henriques initially issued a temporary order in January 2024 in favour of Hollywood, and this week, Judge Robin Mossop SC upheld the company’s claim.

Judge’s Final Ruling
In his judgment, Judge Mossop dismissed arguments by the players who insisted they had followed the rules.

“The respondents gambled for free.

“The wagers placed by the respondents through the impugned game were not valid. It must follow, therefore, that the respondents were not entitled to the winnings that they received from the impugned game and that they must be returned to the applicant,” he declared.

Judge Mossop further noted that the gamblers’ affidavits were nearly identical, differing only in the amounts won. However, he did not find evidence of a coordinated scheme to defraud Hollywood.

“The respondents are scattered all over the province and the country, and are not confined to a specific area, nor has any relationship been established that links them one to the other,” he explained.

Bank Accounts Frozen
The court also ordered several banks — including Capitec, Absa, African Bank, Discovery, and Nedbank — to freeze the accounts of the affected players until the funds are returned to Hollywood.

Italian man walked for 280 miles (7 days) to cool down after arguing with his wife

In 2020, an Italian husband stormed off on a 280-mile walk that lasted seven days to calm down after arguing with his wife, and was subsequently fined £365 for breaking Covid restrictions.

After an argument with his wife, a man in Italy went out to cool off not knowing he would end up walking 280 miles on foot.

The 48-year-old began his journey in Como, near Milan, and walked for over a week until he reached Fano, a coastal town on the Adriatic Sea.

He covered nearly 40 miles a day in cold weather, sleeping outdoors and relying on food and shelter from strangers.

Police eventually found him after a missing persons report was filed. Despite his long journey, he was reportedly in good health, just tired and cold.

While speaking to authorities, the man reportedly told them, “I came here on foot, I didn’t use any transport,” and noted that along his lengthy journey, “I met people who offered me food and drink.”

He told officers he never imagined he’d walk so far, but found the journey peaceful and therapeutic. His wife had to drive over 250 miles to pick him up.

Despite his attempts to explain the situation, police reportedly fined the man €400 ($485) for being out past the city’s mandatedCOVID-19 quarantine curfew.

They later checked the man’s ID in their database and learned that his wife had reported him missing.
