PRESIDENT HICHILEMA LEADS NATIONAL THANKSGIVING FOR GOD’S BLESSINGS, RAINFALL, AND THE FARMING SEASON

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA LEADS NATIONAL THANKSGIVING FOR GOD’S BLESSINGS, RAINFALL, AND THE FARMING SEASON

…FORECASTS ABUNDANT HARVEST

This afternoon, President Hakainde Hichilema led the nation in a heartfelt thanksgiving ceremony, expressing gratitude for God’s blessings, the rainfall, and a fruitful farming season, while urging the country to boost food production.

Delivering an inspiring address, the President underscored the sovereignty of God over Zambia and commended farmers for their abundant harvests in the previous season.

“So far, it is the Lord who has brought us this far, and we will continue to place our faith in Him. God will guide us to where we need to be.

“We gather today to thank God for His mercy, and for the rains He has bestowed upon us,” he stated.

President Hichilema expressed appreciation to God for guiding the nation safely through the recent drought.
He acknowledged that, under God’s guidance and through cooperation between government, the church, and civil society, the country was able to feed its people, with no loss of life to hunger

He reflected on the drought, describing it as a wake-up call for the government to embrace new approaches.

“When the drought struck, we declared a national emergency. It taught us valuable lessons, particularly the need to diversify our energy sources, moving beyond reliance on hydroelectric power to alternatives like solar. God has blessed us with rivers, lakes, and underground water, which we must now use to advance irrigation agriculture. We cannot define our agriculture solely by rainfall,” he said.

The President highlighted the New Dawn UPND administration’s vision to support year-round food production through irrigation farming.

He called on citizens to seize the opportunities presented by government initiatives such as the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP), the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), and the Enhanced Agriculture Support Program to engage in agriculture and food production.

President Hichilema also encouraged Zambians to shift their focus from spending to investing, avoiding unnecessary expenditures and instead channeling resources into future-yielding investments.

He reiterated the importance of national unity, stressing that Zambia’s progress is greater when united.

“We can achieve so much more when we are together than when we are divided. Let us stay true to the motto: One Zambia, One Nation,” he declared.

The President also thanked the church for organizing the thanksgiving prayers.

The event was attended by First Lady Mutinta Hichilema, Vice President Hon. Mutale Nalumango, and several Cabinet Ministers.

ZRA Cracks Down on Shell Companies in K100 Billion Illicit Flow Scheme

ZRA Cracks Down on Shell Companies in K100 Billion Illicit Flow Scheme

The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has wrapped up investigations into 326 cases of suspected illicit financial flows (IFFs), a massive surge from only 17 cases in 2023. Of these, 240 are linked to shell companies entities that exist on paper but are often used to launder money and dodge taxes.

ZRA Director of Investigations Patience Siame revealed the figures during a high-level Tax Symposium organized in partnership with the Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD). Siame described the situation as a growing threat to Zambia’s economic integrity and a clear sign of sophisticated abuse within the business environment.

“In just two years, we’ve traced over USD $5 billion in illicit flows. These are not isolated cases they are well-organized schemes exploiting gaps in tax and financial systems,” Siame said. “It’s a wake-up call to tighten oversight and enforce transparency.”

To close the loopholes, ZRA has rolled out a suite of digital tools aimed at modernizing tax enforcement. These include mandatory electronic tax clearance certificates for all international money transfers, as well as a tracking system for import and export proceeds to monitor compliance more effectively.

A cornerstone of this digital shift is smart invoicing, a system designed to detect invoice manipulation one of the most common tactics used in tax evasion. By leveraging these technologies, ZRA aims to increase real-time oversight and reduce fraudulent reporting.

ZRA Commissioner General Dingani Banda emphasized that data and technology are now central to tax administration. “We are using advanced analytics to identify patterns, streamline processes, and improve accuracy,” he said. “Our goal is to boost revenue collection while ensuring fairness in the system.”

Banda reiterated the Authority’s 2025 target of collecting K156 billion in domestic revenue, stressing that broadening the tax base especially within the private sector is essential. “Every kwacha recovered from illicit flows represents money that can fund schools, hospitals, and roads,” he said.

CTPD Board Chairperson Brian Mwiinga commended ZRA for opening the space for civic engagement and dialogue with the business community. “Tax policy must not be developed in isolation. Businesses and civil society must both be part of shaping an inclusive and accountable system,” Mwiinga said.

As Zambia intensifies its fight against corporate tax abuse, the message to the business sector is clear: compliance, transparency, and cooperation are no longer optional they are the new standard for doing business in a digitally driven economy.

Zambia Must Cut Dependency on Donor Aid, Embrace Self-Reliance—Haabazoka

Zambia Must Cut Dependency on Donor Aid, Embrace Self-Reliance—Haabazoka

Economist and former Economic Association of Zambia (EAZ) president Dr. Lubinda Haabazoka has issued a bold call for Zambia to enact legislation limiting donor funding tied to external conditions, warning that continued reliance on foreign aid undermines the country’s sovereignty and self-development.

In a strongly worded statement titled “Reclaiming Our Sovereignty and Resources: A Call for Self-Reliance,” Dr. Haabazoka emphasized that while the fight against corruption must remain a national priority, the larger issue is Zambia’s overexposure to conditional aid and exploitation of its mineral wealth by foreign investors.

“We are constantly paraded as thieves over amounts of money that are equivalent to the value of one tipper of sugilite,” he said. “Yet we welcome foreign investors with open arms, allowing them to extract our resources and return with crumbs that come with strings attached.”

Haabazoka argued that Zambia’s development must be anchored in its own resources, warning that foreign direct investment (FDI) without strict value-retention policies only deepens dependency and underdevelopment. “In countries like China and Russia, you cannot just donate without approval. Here, we have become too comfortable receiving without questioning,” he said.

He referred to this phenomenon as the “donor curse,” a concept likened to the well-known “resource curse” in economics, where abundant natural wealth paradoxically fuels poverty and corruption. “Donor dependency stifles local innovation and independent thinking. It has created a dangerous comfort zone that weakens our national resilience,” he explained.

Dr. Haabazoka further called the ongoing decline in donor support a “blessing in disguise,” saying it offers Zambia a unique chance to reset its economic compass. “Now is the time for drastic measures. We must begin to fully account for our natural and human resources. Aid has never been a key variable in any of the national development models I’ve created,” he stated.

The economist noted that many African countries, including Zambia, have sufficient untapped potential to drive their own growth if the right policies are implemented and enforced. “We must wake up and embark on a painful but rewarding journey of self-driven development. Just as our anthem says, we must be strong and free not perpetually beholden to donors.”

Dr. Haabazoka was careful to separate his argument from any defense of mismanagement, stating unequivocally that corruption remains one of Zambia’s most pressing threats. “Corruption must be dealt with decisively. Those who steal from the public must face the harshest penalties possible because corruption is the enemy of progress,” he affirmed.

As Zambia faces mounting scrutiny over the misuse of aid including the recent withdrawal of $50 million in annual U.S. health assistance Dr. Haabazoka’s remarks come as a timely provocation, urging policymakers to rethink the nation’s financial and development trajectory.

“Twasebana pafula we have been embarrassed too much,” he said. “It is time to reclaim our dignity and build a nation that stands on its own.”

CHILANGA COUNCIL HANDS OVER NEARLY K2.5 MILLION CDF EMPOWERMENT GRANTS

CHILANGA COUNCIL HANDS OVER NEARLY K2.5 MILLION CDF EMPOWERMENT GRANTS

The Chilanga Town Council has handed over nearly K2.5 million Constituency Development Fund (CDF) empowerment grants to 62 local groups, with each group receiving K40,000.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata, who was represented by Lusaka Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Alex Mapushi, encouraged the beneficiaries of the grants to utilise the grants wisely and become self-sustainable.

“It is important that our beneficiaries are educated before receiving the grants in order to ensure that they don’t misuse the grants but make a profit,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ms. Mulyata has announced the council’s launch of a key road rehabilitation project that will be done at the cost of over K3.2 million, adding that road rehabilitation is expected to boost trade and improve access to essential services.

Zambia Makes History with 41 Tourism Operators at Africa Travel Indaba 2025

Zambia Makes History with 41 Tourism Operators at Africa Travel Indaba 2025

Zambia has made a bold statement on the continental stage by registering a record-breaking 41 tourism operators for the 2025 Africa Travel Indaba, Africa’s leading tourism and travel trade show.

Organized by the Zambia Tourism Agency (ZTA), the country’s participation in this prestigious event, held from 12th to 15th May in Durban, South Africa, marks a significant leap in promoting Zambia as a competitive and attractive destination.

The Indaba is a premier annual event that brings together tourism professionals, international buyers, media, and exhibitors from across the world. It serves as a strategic platform for showcasing Africa’s rich travel offerings, while this year’s theme emphasizes sustainable and responsible tourism a message that aligns well with Zambia’s push for eco-conscious and culturally respectful tourism growth.

ZTA Chief Executive Officer Matongo Matamwandi described this year’s participation as a milestone, expressing both excitement and regret. “Having 41 co-sharers at the Zambia stand is a record breaker, but it is unfortunate that we had to stop some co-sharers from traveling with us due to limited space,” he said. The overwhelming interest is a strong indicator of the growing confidence within the sector.

This year’s participation has also seen a remarkable inclusion of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), a development Matamwandi highlighted as crucial for the sector. “We are excited to have a number of SMEs participate and gain exposure by meeting international buyers and showcasing their businesses to the world,” he said. For many of these operators, the Indaba offers a rare opportunity to access global markets and scale their businesses.

In addition to promoting Zambia’s wide array of natural and cultural tourism products, ZTA is using the platform to market the upcoming Zambia Travel Expo (ZATEX) 2025, which is scheduled for June 5th to 7th at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka. The Agency hopes this back-to-back engagement will keep Zambia on the radar of international buyers and media throughout the year.

With a national target of attracting 2.2 million international tourist arrivals in 2025, the increased participation at Indaba is seen as a step in the right direction. “The increase in the number of Zambia’s tourism operators is an encouragement to us all to be ambassadors in promoting Destination Zambia to the world,” Matamwandi noted. He emphasized that it is such initiatives that will drive the country toward achieving its ambitious goals.

SOUTH AFRICA CRITISES US PLANS TO ACCEPT WHITE AFRICANERS AS REFUGEES

SOUTH AFRICA CRITISES US PLANS TO ACCEPT WHITE AFRICANERS AS REFUGEES

(BBC)  South Africa has criticised the US as reports emerge suggesting Washington could receive white Afrikaners as refugees as early as next week.

A document seen by the BBC’s US partner CBS describes the potential resettlement as a “priority” for President Donald Trump’s government, however the timing has not been publicly confirmed by the White House

In a statement published on Friday, South Africa’s foreign ministry described the purported move as “politically motivated” and designed to undermine South Africa’s “constitutional democracy”.

In February, Trump described Afrikaners as victims of “racial discrimination” in an executive order, opening up the prospect for them to resettle in the US.

The South African authorities said they would not block the departures of those chosen for resettlement, but said they had sought assurances from the US that those selected had been fully vetted and did not have pending criminal charges.

BISHOP SIAME URGES CITIZENS TO MAKE SUSTAINABLE CHOICES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION

BISHOP SIAME URGES CITIZENS TO MAKE SUSTAINABLE CHOICES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION

…Real change for the environment starts with us, not with politicians—let’s take action to recreate a sustainable earth.

Dr. Rodwell Siame, Bishop of the United Church of Zambia (UCZ) Lusaka Presbytery, has encouraged citizens to make deliberate, thoughtful choices that promote environmental sustainability and help mitigate climate change.

Dr. Siame emphasized that expecting politicians alone to solve environmental issues is futile, stressing the essential role of individual responsibility.

Addressing the congregation at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka during a thanksgiving service for God’s favor, rainfall, and the farming season, Dr. Siame reminded attendees that citizens share blame for the harmful impacts of climate change now facing the country.
“As citizens, we must act responsibly. We ought to be mindful of how our actions contribute to climate change. It’s time to change our behavior and the way we care for Mother Earth,” he said.

He further explained that many negative effects of climate change are self-induced, resulting from the choices and actions of citizens.

“Those of you entrusted as civil servants, you have a duty to uphold. Yet, some continue to allocate plots in areas that shouldn’t be developed. We must transform our conduct as a people,” he added.

Bishop Siame stressed that the responsibility to restore and sustain the earth falls on everyone, to safeguard its future for generations to come.

Zambia is only beginning to recover from a severe drought that threatened food security and led to an energy crisis.

Despite these climate challenges, the nation’s economy saw 4% growth—a result commended by economists and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In gratitude for the recent favorable rainy season, the church and government have organized thanksgiving prayers nationwide to honor and thank the Lord.

President Hakainde Hichilema accompanied by the First Lady is also attending the thanksgiving service.

I have not seen a cent – Jerusalema co-singer Nomcebo Zikode cries

The global success of Jerusalema, a song that united millions across borders during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been marred by a revelation from its lead singer, Nomcebo Zikode, who says she has not received any payment for her contribution.

The track, produced by Master KG and performed by Zikode, became a viral anthem in 2020, sparking dance challenges, flash mobs, and international acclaim.

It topped music charts in over ten countries, was streamed more than 500 million times on YouTube, and gained millions more listens on platforms like Spotify. Yet despite the song’s widespread commercial use and immense popularity, Zikode revealed on Instagram that she has not earned a single cent.

“I still have not seen a single cent… I am still fighting for my rights,” Zikode wrote in a post that has reignited public scrutiny over how artists are compensated.

She described her emotional turmoil, stating, “It has broken me,” while emphasizing her resolve to continue advocating for fairness: “We cannot continue excusing the exploitation of artists in this beautiful country.” Her remarks have drawn global support, with fans and fellow artists amplifying her call for justice under the hashtag #JusticeForNomcebo.

Mother gets facelift done by plastic surgeon son for an unbelievable fee

As her 69th birthday draws near, Linda Truesdale is feeling more confident and has a new look thanks to a gift from her son, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Carl Truesdale.

Linda told People that she had been asking her son for years if she needed a facelift and was always told, “Mom, you don’t need anything.”

But after losing weight, moving across the country, and generally reaching a point in her life when she ultimately made the decision to “cut the cord to a lot of unnecessary things,” Linda considered having surgery again.

She recounted, “Carl was like, ‘Well, mom, you think you’re ready?’ and at first I said, ‘Yeah, but let’s just kind of take baby steps’.” That’s how her two-part transformation journey began.

The mom’s goal was to adjust the changes that had developed in her face because of her age. Linda didn’t want to look totally different, even though Carl, who is popular in the industry and online for his age-reversing effects, promised to make his mother look as young as the day he was born.

According to her, she was 31 years old when she gave birth to her son. She thought it would be better if she looked 40.

So, at 68, she had her first surgery, a lip lift combined with an upper eyelid lift (also known as a blepharoplasty). She was conscious throughout the two-hour procedure, but under a numbing local anesthesia.

“I’m the type of person that wants to see it,” she explained.

Linda recovered from the surgeries almost completely, but she did have some minor issues after failing to follow the “doctor’s orders,” which included avoiding salt and keeping her head elevated.

“One night I ate half a bag of kettle-cooked potato chips and I went to pick up something off the floor,” she explained, describing how she developed post-operative swelling. However, she was back to normal within approximately two weeks, and that was about the only issue she faced.

She waited for almost four months before having a deep-plane facelift to correct her “drooping” neck, jowls, and chin line. Linda’s surgery was done in seven hours (she was not awake this time around, though she wished she had been), and there were few difficulties.

She said, “I really expected more pain. There was just one area near my hairline where he did the upper brow lift that was tender. It felt like when you get your hair braided or get a weave, and they pulled too tight.”

She declared, “If he could do any kind of surgery on me that I needed, I would go to Carl,” joking that she would get her hips done by Carl if she could.

However, she admitted that the night before the surgery, she felt a bit anxious: “I’m thinking, okay, we’re getting ready to do this thing; what if something happens to me? How is my son going to survive that? So I had some sleepless hours the night before, and just prayed about it. But, I believed that he could do this.”

Carl, on the other hand, said, “Of course, every patient matters deeply to me, but there’s something unique about operating on your own mother. As I worked, I kept thinking, ‘This is the person who gave me life,’ and I found myself wondering if my anatomy mirrors hers. That said, I followed the same protocols I do for all my patients. The only difference? Instead of going home to recover, she healed in my back house — with her son checking in on her every step of the way.”

He shared the video of her transformation on TikTok, and it has received over 78,000 likes.

One comment read, “She already couldn’t brag about her doctor son enough, now she ain’t gonna ever hush up. Big ups to you bro. What a beautiful moment with your mom and great marketing tool for your business.” Another wrote, “What a beautiful lady. It’s not looking young but healthy, clean, confident… she looks AMAZING. I wonder how old is the lady? Beautiful!”

Linda is now filled with enthusiasm as she looks forward to the future.

She remarked, “I feel better when I look in the mirror. I was at Lowe’s the other day, and this woman walked up to me and said, ‘Oh my God, you have absolutely beautiful skin. What do you do?’ It’s just good to be able to make people feel good when they see you.”

Carl usually charges $60,000-$120,000 for full facial rejuvenations, but his mother’s procedures were 100 percent free. “What I paid was giving birth to Carl,”‘ Linda said with a laugh. “That was a gift to mom.”

“How do you charge the woman who gave you life?” Carl added.

Amber Heard has announced the birth of her twin babies

Amber Heard has announced the birth of her twin babies, a daughter named Agnes and a son named Ocean, marking a significant milestone in her growing family.

The actress, already a mother to four-year-old daughter Oonagh Paige, shared the news on Instagram on Sunday, May 11, in celebration of Mother’s Day 2025.

“Mother’s Day 2025 will be one I’ll never forget,” Heard wrote. “This year I am elated beyond words to celebrate the completion of the family I’ve strived to build for years.” She went on to officially introduce the twins, saying, “Today I officially share the news that I welcomed twins into the Heard gang. My daughter Agnes and my son Ocean are keeping my hands (and my heart) full.”

Reflecting on her journey to motherhood, Heard added, “Becoming a mother by myself and on my own terms despite my own fertility challenges has been the most humbling experience of my life. I am eternally grateful that I was able to choose this responsibly and thoughtfully.”

The announcement comes as a rare personal update from the actress, who has largely kept her private life out of the public eye since her highly publicized legal battles with ex-husband Johnny Depp. While she had revealed in December that her family was growing, she had not disclosed that she was expecting twins.

Qatari royal family set to gift Donald Trump a $400 million luxury Boeing 747-800 aircraft

The Qatari royal family is reportedly set to gift U.S. President Donald Trump a luxury Boeing 747-800 aircraft, estimated to be worth $400 million.

According to sources cited by ABC News and The New York Times, the aircraft, which is 13 years old, will be transferred to the U.S. Air Force and upgraded to meet military specifications for presidential transport. It is expected to be designated as a future Air Force One.

The Qatari royal family, one of the wealthiest in the world with an estimated net worth of $335 billion, is behind the gift—believed to be the most valuable foreign donation ever made to the U.S. government. The move is already drawing scrutiny over its legality and implications.

Reports state that once Trump leaves office, the aircraft will be donated to his presidential library, allowing him continued access to it as a private citizen.

To preempt legal challenges, Trump’s legal team, including attorney general Pam Bondi and top White House lawyer David Warrington, have reportedly prepared legal documentation asserting that the gift is “legally permissible.”

They argue it does not violate U.S. laws prohibiting federal officials from accepting gifts from foreign governments, nor does it breach constitutional provisions against foreign influence.

The development comes as Trump prepares for a diplomatic tour of the Middle East, with Qatar among the countries on his itinerary. The president has previously voiced the need for a new official aircraft.

Vladimir Putin has proposed direct negotiations with Ukraine to end the ongoing conflict

Russian President, Vladimir Putin has proposed direct negotiations with Ukraine to end the ongoing conflict but made no mention of a 30-day ceasefire plan supported by European leaders and the United States.

Speaking from the Kremlin early Sunday, Putin suggested that talks resume in Istanbul on May 15, saying, “We propose to the Kyiv authorities to resume the talks that they broke off in 2022, and, I emphasise, without any preconditions.”

Russia and Ukraine previously held negotiations in Istanbul during the early stages of the war, but those talks failed to produce a truce. Putin added that he would speak with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to seek support in facilitating the new round of talks.

“I am committed to serious negotiations with Ukraine,” he said, stressing the need to address what he described as the “root causes” of the war — grievances often linked to Russia’s long-standing objections to Ukraine’s Western alignment.

While expressing openness to a new ceasefire agreement during the proposed talks, Putin sharply criticized what he called Western “ultimatums” and “anti-Russian rhetoric.” He did not directly acknowledge the ceasefire proposal presented just hours earlier by Ukraine and the leaders of France, Germany, Britain, and Poland.

The European leaders, joined by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, had urged Moscow to accept a 30-day unconditional ceasefire starting Monday, warning of additional sanctions if Russia failed to comply.

French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking during his return from Ukraine, cautioned that Putin’s offer could be a tactic to “buy time.” He emphasized that “an unconditional ceasefire is not preceded by negotiations, by definition.”

The ceasefire initiative has gained broad international backing. “We have just now… decided to support a ceasefire which will begin next Monday, without any preconditions,” Macron said during a press conference in Kyiv. The announcement followed a joint meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

The leaders also held a video conference with counterparts from around 20 other nations in the pro-Ukraine coalition. In the event of a ceasefire violation, Macron warned that “massive sanctions” were being coordinated between the U.S. and Europe.

U.S. President Donald Trump responded on his Truth Social platform, calling it “a potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine” and promised to continue working with both sides. Though previously criticized for his stance toward Moscow, Trump has recently expressed frustration with the war’s prolonged nature and signaled impatience with Putin.

British Prime Minister Starmer echoed the growing alignment among Western powers, saying the Kyiv talks showed “absolute unity across a whole range of countries around the world, including the United States.”

Polish Prime Minister Tusk described the atmosphere as a turning point, adding, “For the first time in a long time we had a feeling that the whole free world is truly united.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also backed the proposed truce, calling for its unconditional implementation as a pathway to meaningful peace negotiations.

Meanwhile, the symbolic display of unity came just one day after Putin presided over a military parade in Moscow marking 80 years since the defeat of Nazi Germany. He had previously declared a unilateral three-day ceasefire for the event, though reports from Ukrainian forces suggested fighting continued at normal intensity during that period.

Why do we demonize second wives when Solomon and Joseph were not sons of first wives?- Nollywood filmmaker, Aniebiet Francis

ollywood filmmaker, Aniebiet Francis has asked why second wives are demonized when two prominent figures in the Bible, Solomon and Joseph, were not the sons of first wives.

“Grab your seats let’s talk about something very sensitive. Why do we demonize second wives when Solomon, David’s heir was not the son of David’s first wife and Joseph was the sons of Jacob’s second wife? Don’t you think that God wouldn’t have made the sons of these women prominent in the genealogy of Jesus, if He was so judge-mental of their positions in their marriages? As you are coming to support or counter this post, please come with Bible references. I won’t condone any tantrums here,” she wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday.

Pope Leo XIV calls for peace in his first Sunday address to Catholics

Pope Leo XIV called for an end to war as he greeted crowds from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica on Sunday, May 11, marking his second official public appearance since becoming the head of the Catholic Church.

“Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday!” proclaimed the first American pontiff, addressing tens of thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square. The crowd cheered, applauded, and waved flags in celebration.

The Chicago-born pope spoke passionately about global conflicts following a prayer to the Virgin Mary, referencing the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II—a conflict that claimed 60 million lives.

“In today’s dramatic scenario of a third world war in tatters, as repeatedly stated by Pope Francis, I also address the powerful of the world, repeating the ever-timely appeal: No more war!” he urged from the balcony.

Echoing the sentiments of his predecessor, Pope Francis, he called for a “genuine, just and lasting peace” in Ukraine and expressed deep sorrow over the violence in the Gaza Strip, calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

“Humanitarian aid must be provided to the exhausted civilian population and all the hostages must be freed,” he added.

Leo’s appearance drew a massive crowd eager to catch a glimpse of the new pope, born Robert Francis Prevost, who spent much of his life as a missionary in Peru.

Chosen as the 267th pope during a secret conclave, Leo has been entrusted with healing divisions within the Church, reviving faith among the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics, and addressing pressing modern-day challenges.

In an address to cardinals on Saturday, the 69-year-old pontiff described himself as a “humble servant of God… and nothing more than this,” and an “unworthy successor” to St Peter.

Sunday’s gathering was filled with pilgrims from around the world, bearing flags and Catholic symbols. Priests, nuns, and youth groups mingled in the square, with some playing guitars and singing as they waited.

Among the faithful was Alejandrina Espinosa, 59, of the Quechua community in Peru, who wept upon hearing of Leo’s election.

“He stole our hearts, because he awakened Christianity. The pope turned his work towards the forgotten, desolate peoples,” she said. “I hope that this pope can unite all religions to save the world, because humanity is living a humanitarian crisis. We are killing each other.”

Earlier in the day, Pope Leo celebrated mass at the altar near the tomb of St Peter, located deep beneath the basilica in the Vatican Grottoes.

A group of 49 Afrikaner refugees is scheduled to depart South Africa on Sunday, May 11, 2025, under a contentious U.S. refugee resettlement program initiated by US President Donald Trump.

This follows his February executive order granting refugee status to Afrikaners, citing “unjust racial discrimination” and referencing the Expropriation Act of 2024.

The group is expected to land at Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C., on Monday, May 12, possibly via a chartered flight, though flight clearances remained unresolved as of Thursday.

U.S. officials, including a deputy secretary of state, are expected to welcome them, with resettlement plans spanning Minnesota, Idaho, and Alabama. The Department of Health and Human Services will provide housing and integration assistance.

Lusaka… Sunday May 11, 2025 — The Socialist Party (SP) Youth League has accused the government of using the recent arrests by the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) and police as a public relations exercise aimed at diverting attention from alleged corruption within the ruling UPND.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Youth League Secretary, Stanley Muba’sa, the arrests were described as an attempt to project a false image of accountability following revelations made by the United States Ambassador to Zambia, Michael Gonzales.

The ambassador had previously raised concerns about the looting of medical drugs, a revelation that, according to Muba’sa, has embarrassed and exposed the Zambian government.

Mr. Muba’sa said the fight against corruption in Zambia could not be genuine until President Hakainde Hichilema publicly declared his assets and dismissed senior officials implicated in serious scandals, including Solicitor General Marshall Muchende.

He further stated that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had failed to provide findings on these issues and had not named ministers suspected of wrongdoing.

According to the Socialist Party Youth League, the government was thrown into panic following the US ambassador’s remarks, holding as many as 33 meetings without taking action to halt the alleged looting.

Mr. Muba’sa likened the lack of access to life-saving drugs due to corruption to crimes against humanity, equating it to terr0rism and műrd£r.

The statement condemned ZAMRA for trying to restore public confidence through arrests that were not targeting the actual culprits.

It further asserted that both the US and the Zambian public had lost trust in the government, contending that any visible actions were only meant to intimidate political opponents rather than address real issues such as the rising cost of living.

Mr. Muba’sa called on ZAMRA not to allow itself to be used by politicians to protect those within the current administration.

He insisted that the institution should pursue the actual perpetrators involved in the theft of US-donated medical supplies.

“The fight against corruption turned into a fight for corruption,” Muba’sa stated, pointing to what he called the President’s failure to act decisively against those within his inner circle accused of misconduct.

IT CANNOT BE BUSINESS AS USUAL – MUSOKOTWANE

IT CANNOT BE BUSINESS AS USUAL – MUSOKOTWANE

The Government of The Republic of Zambia (GRZ) remains committed to the implementation of sound economic policies that balance growth with fiscal responsibility. We are cognisant of the tight fiscal space at a time when the development needs of our people remain constant & in some cases are scaling-up, hence our steadfast resolve to ensure that resources from the treasury & development partners are utilised in the most prudent manner.

“It cannot be business as usual, this is why we have instituted measures to ensure that laws & all attendant regulations that govern financial management & public procurement are applied, failure to which there will be swift consequences for perpetrators of financial & supply mismanagement,” Finance & National Planning Minister Dr SITUMBEKO MUSOKOTWANE, MP, has warned.

“Looking at this report (April, 2025 budget releases), I am happy that since 2021 & despite adding more than 85,000 new employees across public entities, we seem to have maintained our promise that salaries for public officials will never delay beyond the month-end as was customary in the past,” observed Dr MUSOKOTWANE, adding that, “it also seems that this is the first time in decades that all Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) arrears have completely been liquidated as early as April. We will continue on this path.”

The Minister was commenting as he reflected on the April, 2025, budget releases. Further, he indicated that the GRZ will continue to eliminate the ‘deep-vein’ inefficiencies in some public sector entities so that development efforts eventually get more concentrated on investment in the economy, job-creation for youths, growth, growth & more growth which will result in wealth creation for the country & elevating fellow citizens from poverty.

UPDATE ON APRIL 2025 BUDGET IMPLEMENTATION

In April 2025, the Ministry of Finance & National Planning released K23.5 billion to finance public service delivery. Of this amount, K8.5 billion went to transfers, subsidies & social benefits, K3.5 billion to the implementation of various developmental programmes & general operations, K1.2 billion was spent on capital expenditure, K4.6 billion for the public service wage bill, & K5.7 billion was spent on debt service (domestic & external) & arrears.

DEBT & OTHER LIABILITIES

In line with the GRZ’s commitment to reducing its indebtedness, a total sum of K5.7 billion was paid, of which, K4.2 billion was for servicing domestic debt, K1 billion for external debt, & K443.1 million went towards dismantling arrears owed to various suppliers of goods & services.

A few days ago, Zambia & India Exim Bank signed a bilateral agreement to restructure US$ 335 million debt. The step demonstrated our success in engaging creditors in a transparent & collaborative manner & signaled a strong vote of confidence in Zambia’s economic reforms. The terms agreed upon are designed to support our country’s recovery, reduce debt servicing pressures, & allow us to refocus resources towards priority sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure development, & economic growth enhancing interventions.

The reduced monthly debt repayment obligations also clearly reflect the benefit of mitigated debt servicing pressures as a result of the restructuring process. We reiterate the GRZ’s unwavering commitment to honoring debt obligations & maintaining a transparent & constructive relationship with creditors. We will continue to work together to advance sustainable development.

TRANSFERS & SUBSIDIES

The Treasury also disbursed a total of K8.5 billion towards transfers & subsidies in April 2025. Notable items under this category included:

1) K3.1 billion for FISP, being the final balance to completely liquidate arrears relating to the 2024/2025 farming season under both the e-voucher & the direct input supply modes. As a result, no supplier of farming inputs should remain owed by the GRZ for the 2024/2025 farming season;

2) K270 million was disbursed under the Ministry of Community Development & Social Services to liquidate arrears relating to the Food Security Pack. The programme aims to empower the vulnerable but viable small-scale farmers with seed & fertilizer supplies;

3) K2 billion went to the Social Cash Transfer (SCT) to ensure that all eligible beneficiaries under this programme, including those under the drought-response Emergency Cash Transfer, are paid in full for March & April 2025;

4) K333.3 million was disbursed for the Cash for Work programme in an effort to augment the empowerment of households in various communities affected by the 2023/2024 drought;

5) Further, K1 billion was released under the Constituency Development Fund category to facilitate the continued implementation of community projects, skills development bursaries, as well as grants & loans for eligible beneficiaries;

6) K783.5 million was disbursed as school grants to support the seamless implementation of the free education policy. This early disbursement is in line with the GRZ’s commitment to ensure adequate preparation for learners as schools reopen this month for Term II; &,

7) K933.7 million was also released to support the operations of various Grant Aided Institutions in the public Service, including Local Authorities through the Local GRZ Equalisation Fund. A further K100 million went towards the payment of pension benefits under Local Authorities Superannuation Fund (LASF) in an effort to reduce vulnerability among retirees.

GENERAL OPERATIONS

The Treasury released K3.5 billion to facilitate general operations of the Central GRZ. Notable items under this category included:

1) K944.9 million for the procurement of Drugs & Medical Supplies to enable adequate stocking of medicines in various public health facilities across the country;

2) K120.4 million for the on-going geological mapping exercise which is being undertaken by the Ministry of Mines to ensure a comprehensive mapping & geo-location of the country’s mineral & water resources; &,

3) K100 million, being part payment towards the mobile registration exercise for National Registration Cards (NRCs) – a prerequisite for the forthcoming voter registration exercise related to next year’s general elections.

CAPITAL EXPENDITURE

The Ministry of Finance & National Planning released a sum of K1.2 billion towards on-going capital expenditure projects, of which, K543.5 million was for road infrastructure, K265.4 million for public university & school infrastructure, & K402.1 million was for other infrastructure projects being implemented in various GRZ institutions.

THE WAGE BILL

The Treasury released K4.6 billion for the Public Service Wage Bill for April, 2025, to meet costs relating to remuneration of various public service workers. As indicated by the Minister, the GRZ is pleased that the measures put in place since 2021, have resulted in salaries for public officials not being delayed beyond the month-end, as was the case in the past.

Drugstore Crackdowns and Donor Pressure. Is ZAMRA Targeting Symptoms While Ignoring the Disease?

Kumwesu In-Depth analysts:
Drugstore Crackdowns and Donor Pressure. Is ZAMRA Targeting Symptoms While Ignoring the Disease?

The recent arrest of several individuals operating unauthorized drugstores in Lusaka has sparked a mix of approval, curiosity, and quiet outrage. The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA), acting with unusual speed and resolve, has intensified its clampdown on illegal pharmaceutical outlets a move that follows closely on the heels of a damning revelation by the U.S. Embassy, which led to a suspension of funding to Zambia’s Ministry of Health.

On the surface, this may appear to be an overdue intervention aimed at restoring order in a loosely regulated pharmaceutical sector.

However, an in-depth look reveals a more troubling narrative: a systemic failure, misplaced accountability, and international embarrassment that is now being managed with reactive optics rather than genuine reform.

The United States, one of Zambia’s largest health sector donors through programs like PEPFAR, recently flagged serious irregularities in the Ministry of Health’s drug supply and procurement system. Reports of stolen, diverted, or expired medicines, along with a surge of counterfeit drugs on the informal market, have significantly eroded donor confidence.

The U.S. Embassy’s decision to suspend funding wasn’t made lightly it reflects a loss of trust not just in the system, but in the ability of Zambian authorities to uphold transparency and accountability.

This international pressure clearly jolted ZAMRA and the Ministry of Health into action. Yet the timing raises legitimate questions: why now? And more importantly, why are the first targets the end-users, the small-scale sellers and not the upstream culprits?

Illegal drugstores don’t operate in a vacuum. Their existence points to a much bigger and more dangerous problem: a porous and corrupt pharmaceutical supply chain that allows regulated medicines to end up on street corners, market stalls, and makeshift shops.

The medicines these traders sell from antibiotics to contraceptives to controlled painkillers don’t fall from the sky. Many are originally part of public or donor-funded stock meant for government clinics and hospitals. Somehow, they leak out diverted by insiders, sold off by rogue employees, or misappropriated during transport.

ZAMRA’s silence on how these drugs exit the formal system and reach unauthorized sellers is deafening. The public deserves answers:

Who are the suppliers behind the scenes?
Are there investigations into government storekeepers, procurement officers, or health center managers?

What reforms are being put in place to seal the leaks?

By focusing on the low-level vendors many of whom are economically vulnerable and unaware of full legal requirements, ZAMRA risks appearing complicit in protecting the bigger actors who benefit from the black market.

There is no doubt that illegal drug sales pose a serious health risk. Poor storage conditions, unqualified dispensers, and expired drugs can lead to treatment failure, drug resistance, and even death. A strong regulatory framework is essential.

But the current crackdown seems more concerned with restoring public image and appeasing donors than genuinely fixing the health system. Arrests and press releases may win headlines, but they don’t rebuild trust or restore health access.

Ironically, many communities rely on these illegal outlets because formal healthcare facilities are chronically understocked or out of reach. If public clinics had sufficient stock, staffed pharmacies, and community health outreach, the demand for illegal outlets would naturally decline.

The root of this issue also lies in Zambia’s overreliance on donor funding. As long as the health sector depends on external financing, accountability will always be driven by outside pressure rather than internal reform.

It is telling that this wave of enforcement only began after the U.S. Embassy raised concerns and suspended funding. If Zambia hopes to reclaim sovereignty over its health systems, it must do more than react to embarrassment it must institutionalize transparency, enforce procurement laws, digitize supply chains, and invest in capacity building.

ZAMRA’s efforts to regulate the sector are not in themselves wrong but they are incomplete and misdirected. A true reform strategy should:

Identify and prosecute the suppliers who leak drugs into the black market.

Audit the Ministry of Health’s procurement and distribution system.

Offer transitional support to informal sellers willing to legalize.

Reinforce public trust through transparency and community engagement.

Until then, this crackdown remains a symbolic gesture chasing shadows while the disease festers at the heart of the system.

PRESS STATEMENT

MINISTER OF ENERGY URGES TRADITIONAL LEADERS TO GIVE UP LAND FOR SOLAR ENERGY INVESTMENT

Minister of Energy,  Makozo Chikote, has called on traditional leaders across the country to support the government’s efforts in promoting renewable energy by making land available for the development of solar power plants in their chiefdoms.

Mr. Chikote noted that the construction of solar energy projects presents a timely opportunity to diversify Zambia’s energy sources, reduce the electricity deficit, and unlock socio-economic benefits at the local level. He emphasised that solar plants will not only improve electricity access but also create employment opportunities and foster rural development.

“I urge our esteemed traditional leaders to take advantage of this opportunity by availing land for solar projects. These investments will drive development in their chiefdoms, provide clean energy, and create much-needed jobs—especially for our youth,” said Mr. Chikote.

He reiterated the government’s strong commitment to expanding access to alternative energy sources, which is in line with the broader national energy mix strategy. The Minister added that the government remains focused not only on addressing the electricity shortfall but also on delivering meaningful job creation across the country.

“As part of this agenda, we continue to encourage private sector investment in renewable energy across all provinces. The participation of traditional leaders is key to ensuring that communities benefit directly from these developments,” he said.

Mr. Chikote further reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to meeting the presidential directive to add 1,000 megawatts of electricity to the national grid by 2025.

“In line with President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision, the Ministry of Energy is working tirelessly to meet the 1,000-megawatt target by the end of 2025. This can only be achieved through collaborative efforts involving government, the private sector, and our traditional leadership,” he said.

He concluded by calling on all stakeholders to seize the opportunity to reshape Zambia’s energy future and contribute to sustainable, inclusive development.

SIALUBALO BREATHS FIRE, NO FREE RIDE, CDF BENEFICIARIES MUST PAY BACK LOANS

SIALUBALO BREATHS FIRE, NO FREE RIDE, CDF BENEFICIARIES MUST PAY BACK LOANS

Mpika – Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Gift Sialubalo, MP, has issued a stern reminder to beneficiaries of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) empowerment loans, emphasizing that the funds must be repaid in full to ensure the program’s long term success and sustainability.

Speaking during a CDF monitoring tour in Mpika District, the minister made it clear that the loans are not grants or handouts, but revolving funds intended to empower communities and stimulate local economic activity.

“A loan is a loan and must be paid back. When you don’t pay, you are blocking someone else from benefiting. This fund is meant to uplift many lives, and it can only do that if it is respected and treated with accountability,” Hon. Sialubalo said.
The Minister expressed concern over reports of delayed or non-repayment by some beneficiaries and warned that continued defaulting could jeopardize the future of the CDF loan scheme in various constituencies.

He urged local authorities, Ward Development Committees, and CDF technical committees to enhance public sensitization efforts and ensure that all loan terms are clearly communicated and understood before disbursement.

“CDF loans must be used for the intended purposes whether it’s farming, small scale businesses, or vocational projects. Misusing or defaulting on these funds undermines the spirit of community development and empowerment,” he added.

The monitoring exercise forms part of a broader government initiative to promote transparency, track impact, and strengthen accountability mechanisms around the CDF implementation process nationwide.

The CDF loan facility is one of the key pillars of Zambia’s decentralization strategy, designed to reduce poverty, promote entrepreneurship, and build self-reliant communities.

Niger Escalates Nationalization of Uranium Mines, Seizes Equipment from French-Owned Orano

Niger Escalates Nationalization of Uranium Mines, Seizes Equipment from French-Owned Orano

Niamey, Niger – May 10, 2025

JubaGlobal News Network

In a bold move to assert control over its natural resources, Niger’s military-led government has intensified its nationalization efforts by seizing equipment from the offices of Orano, a French state-owned nuclear fuel company. The raid, conducted on May 5, 2025, targeted Orano’s subsidiaries—Somair, Cominak, and Orano Mining Niger—in the capital, Niamey, with security forces confiscating items, including mobile phones. The operation marks a significant escalation in Niger’s campaign to end French exploitation of its uranium mines, highlighting deepening tensions between the West African nation and its former colonial power

Raid and Arrest Amid Nationalization Push

The raid follows Niger’s December 2024 seizure of operational control of the Somair uranium mine in the northern Arlit region, where Orano holds a 63.4% stake and the Nigerien state owns 36.6%. Reports indicate that Orano’s local director, Ibrahim Courmo, was arrested during the Niamey operation, though the government has not officially confirmed his detention. Orano expressed concern, stating it has been unable to contact its representative and has “very limited” information due to losing operational control of its subsidiaries last year.

Niger’s actions are part of a broader strategy to nationalize its uranium industry, a critical sector for the world’s seventh-largest uranium producer, which accounts for approximately 5% of global output. In June 2024, the military junta revoked Orano’s operating license for the Imouraren mine, one of the world’s largest uranium deposits, citing the company’s failure to resume development by a stipulated deadline. The government has since declared the mine “returned to the public domain,” signaling its intent to prioritize national interests over foreign concessions.

Defiance Against French Influence

Since the July 2023 coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, Niger’s military leadership, under General Abdourahamane Tiani, has pursued an anti-Western agenda, expelling French troops and reviewing foreign mining agreements. The junta has accused France of exploiting Niger’s resources while leaving its population—70% of whom lack electricity—impoverished. Niger’s uranium has historically fueled 15–17% of France’s nuclear reactors, critical for its energy sector, yet locals argue the country reaps minimal benefits from these operations.

The government has instructed foreign companies, particularly French firms, to comply with new mining regulations aimed at increasing state revenue and control. In September 2024, Niger established the Timersoi National Uranium Company (TNUC) to oversee its uranium assets, further solidifying its nationalization efforts. The raid on Orano’s offices underscores Niamey’s determination to enforce these laws, with authorities ignoring Orano’s attempts to negotiate, including proposals to airlift 1,150 tonnes of stranded uranium concentrate valued at $210 million.

Geopolitical Shifts and Regional Implications

Niger’s actions reflect a broader regional trend of rejecting Western influence, as seen in neighboring Burkina Faso and Mali, both of which have also expelled French forces and aligned with Russia and China. Analysts suggest that Russian and Turkish firms may soon vie for Niger’s uranium concessions, with Minister of Mines Colonel Abarchi Ousmane indicating openness to new partners in November 2024. This shift comes as France’s influence in the Sahel wanes, compounded by its failure to recognize Niger’s junta, which has fueled hostility toward French entities like Orano.

The nationalization push has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters argue it will enable Niger to fund development projects, improve infrastructure, and reduce dependency on foreign powers. However, critics warn that the move could destabilize the mining sector, deter investment, and exacerbate economic challenges in a country where poverty remains rampant. Orano, which has operated in Niger for over 50 years, has vowed to defend its rights in national or international courts while expressing regret over the impact on employees and local communities.

Global Attention and Future Uncertainty

Niger’s seizure of Orano’s equipment has drawn international scrutiny, with the European Union and France expressing concern over the loss of a key uranium supplier. In 2022, Niger provided over a quarter of the EU’s uranium, making it the bloc’s second-largest source after Kazakhstan. The ongoing export blockade, exacerbated by Niger’s closed border with Benin, has already forced France to rely on alternative suppliers like Canada and Kazakhstan, though EU imports from Russia have controversially risen by 70% since 2023.

As Niger moves to assert sovereignty over its uranium wealth, the raid on Orano’s offices signals a new chapter in its quest for economic autonomy. Yet, with 1,150 tonnes of uranium concentrate stranded and financial strains mounting at Somair, the path forward remains uncertain. The international community watches closely as Niger navigates this high-stakes gamble, balancing national pride against the risks of isolation and economic disruption.

It’s not too late for HH to ‘love back’ USA
…and get a shot at saving 1.3 mln Zambian lives after the fact

By Amb. Anthony Mukwita

11th May 25

There’s been a raft of mixed reactions since America’s Ambassador to Zambia H.E Michael Gonzalez announced that Uncle Sam was icing $50 million of its health aid package to Zambia last week amidst accusations of theft.

I was among the first people as an International Relations analyst that got into the cross-hairs of this raging debate, as Amb. Gonzales stated that up to 1.3 million Zambian lives hang in balance as a result of the annual aid freeze. He wept.
In a top news interview on the widely followed Diamond TV interview on Friday, I opined that the number of lives at risk were way way too many to just look the other way.

I said in diplomacy, from my education and actual practice, the door is never closed, it could be re-opened anytime for a better solution, meaning that President HH had an opportunity to revisit whatever differences he has over this sensitive matter with Uncle Sam.

I still stand by my opinion as a trained diplomat because like I said during the interview, diplomacy is all about ‘talking and talking and talking and talking’ until two sides of differing parties agree on everything or make concessions.

I believe today like I believed yesterday that if the Don HH put on his white gloves today, he could sit with Uncle Sam rep Gonzales and bring back that K1.4 billion to Zambia and save 1.3 million lives.
Reconciliation is what my entire life as a diplomat, an Editor in Chief, a business partner and family man, anyone that knows me beyond political lenses will attest to this. I don’t mind losing a battle of right or wrong if it leads to serenity.
In fact dozens of my columns always end with ‘make love not war’ and I add, ‘no one wins when everyone is losing’ in the game of governance and economic development.

Let’s face it, Zambia is a poor rich country (64% poor people out of 20mln), it needs aid from Uncle Sam and other partners before it gets its economic house in order sooner rather than later but in the interim, we have people depending on aid from abroad for health reasons.

We are caught between a hard place and a hard place.

SO WHAT MUST ZAMBIA DO?

In a stand-off like the one we are in with Uncle Sam, my advice which maybe counts for nothing is that the Don H has a key to unlock the life saving aid back on track, he is the boss.

Seas part when he gives the word, he has shown that he can do it when he puts his mind to it, for some of us, we just pen ops-eds, the heavy-lifting is left to those that call the shots, the mighty elected.
The gun manufacturer does not want a war to end because it ices his profits just like big Pharma does not want a cure to terminal diseases because if a cure is found they don’t make money.
A political identity benefitting from the Don H does not want to see a reconciliation with ECL.

A cash-hungry lawyer does not want a rich client to settle a case because she stops getting paid.

But when discussing resolutions in diplomacy, we inevitably have to discuss what went wrong, like I said candidly on Diamond TV, it doesn’t mean we concentrate on apportioning blame. Only God can judge me now.

Ba PK Chishala the professor of Zambian folklore music once crooned, “abatoba amayanda ilingi fipuba fye…ilingi in ba chibombebombe ilingi in ba jeneral worker. Bakaboyi batoba amayanda bengi ye. Bwana talipo kasahala kaletoba…”
So we have a choice as a nation, do we continue fighting or reconcile and make love not war? What’s your position?
I always say ‘make love not war’ and my appeal to Don HH and all you out there that are more intelligent than I am, ‘war, what it is good for? Absolutely nothing.”
Ba Don H can make some decisive decisions and save the 1.3 million Zambians that risk the ‘sound of silence’ or in English ‘death.’

If he just acts on the concerns the Americans have raised we can be good again, a win win for both, I am not talking total compromises.
That is what I was labouring to say in my interview on Diamond TV, reconciliation, not escalation.

I have no doubt the Don wants to end the impasse ahead of the 2026 polls, he gains an easy 1.3 million votes in my view if he saves these lives and wins back love from the USA.

The makers of “We are the World”, Quincy Jones ‘et al’ had a placard outside the studio for all the mega stars such as the King of pop Michael Jackson and others—leave your ego at the door.

‘Ine nalanda kwena epompelele’ and in my view, ‘I am the most flawed man on earth right now’ so you can take my two ngwe with a bucketful of salt but I still believe that only the Don H can stop the rot right now because he is the Don.

Also just remember the words of Henry Kissinger, ‘it’s a dangerous thing to have America as an enemy but yet even more fatal to have America as your friend.’
The divisions in Zambia today are so many they sit in households.

Let’s think of the people that could die if this dog fight doesn’t end when the answer lies in a peaceful end. No one wins when everyone is losing.
Listen to the most flawed man in Zambia. Me.

UKA IS NOT BREAKING APART, WE’RE PLANNING FOR 2026 WITH MAJOR PARTIES – KATEKA

11 May 2025

UNITED Kwacha Alliance (UKA) member Chishala Kateka says the alliance has been engaging with opposition parties such as Zambia We Want, UNIP, Socialist Party and Tonse alliance, to work out a solution for 2026.

In an interview, Wednesday, Kateka, who is also New Heritage Party president, said for UKA to actualise its plans for Zambians, it needed to get into government, hence the alliance’s decision to link itself to other opposition parties.

“[As] UKA, in order to do what we set out to do, we need to get into government, we need a platform upon which we can take the solutions that we have for Zambia and for Zambians and actualise them.

I NEVER DESTROYED MMD! -Says Dr NEVERS Mumba

I NEVER DESTROYED MMD! -Says Dr Mumba

…..as NW Province gives him a thunderous welcome…

MMD Leader Dr Nevers Mumba last Thursday made a rebuttal to the false claims advanced by his political opponents that make him the subject of blame for the Party’s dwindled fortunes.

The vilified cleric wondered how he “destroyed “ MMD when he was out of the country serving as a Diplomat at the time MMD lost Power to the Patriotic Front in the 2011 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.

In his stump speech delivered to delegates who were in a frenzied mood, Dr Mumba invited comparisons with the late 2nd Republican President Frederick Chiluba stating that only him and the late President were voted for overwhelmingly for the position of Party President.

“No other President has ever won by 70% and above other than Mr Chiluba and myself,” said Dr Mumba amidist loud cheers from the audience, which was momentarily flashing the Party Symbol.

He went on to recount the many Bye Elections that were won under his leadership, a development which unsettled his enemies and brought about a hostile takeover of the Party, which was only given back to him four years later after a Court intervention.

Meanwhile, there was a scramble for Positions as an overwhelming number of delegates including the Youths, Women put themselves forward to contest for various positions in the Provincial Party Structure.

The  well attended Provincial Conference ended with the election of the New Provincial Executive Committee which received its matching orders from the Party President.

The MMD Leader who is on a Countrywide tour is expected to complete the last tranche of his tour after covering five more Provinces.

SABOI’S EXPULSION HISTORY, MY FOCUS IS HOW WE’LL GET RID OF THIS GOVT – Sakwiba Sikota

SABOI’S EXPULSION HISTORY, MY FOCUS IS HOW WE’LL GET RID OF THIS GOVT – SAKI

UNITED Kwacha Alliance Chairperson Sakwiba Sikota says the expulsion of Saboi Imboela from the alliance is a thing of the past, and that he is now concentrating on important matters of the state.

On Wednesday, Imboela dismissed her expulsion from the alliance, stating that Sikota lacked the authority to expel her.

Imboela has also purportedly expelled and retired Sikota from UKA in both “public and national interest due to his worrisome behaviour and failure to help the Alliance have proper documents, governance, leadership and direction”. Reacting to this, Sikota said his primary focus was on how the opposition would get rid of the current government.

“Right now, I’m concentrating on important matters of the state, as to how we’ll get rid of this government” he said.

SDA LEADER DEFENDS PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S SUPPORT

SDA LEADER DEFENDS PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S SUPPORT

Seventh Day Adventist Church Southern Zambia Union Conference President VANNY MUNYUMBWE says assumptions that President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA is favouring the SDA church compared to other denominations are illogical and unfair.

Dr. MUNYUMBWE says President HICHILEMA is a member of the SDA and helps the church as a member.

He said in an interview that people need to accord the President the privileges of every church member to support the congregation in any way he can.

Dr. MUNYUMBWE adds that it is not right to say that the President must do for all churches what he does for the SDA because he has proved that he considers all churches as one.

Meanwhile, Dr. MUNYUMBWE has dismissed allegations that the SDA did not accept a donation from a church member based on political affiliation.

He says the committee of elders only guided that the donation be made after the donation of the President in line with state protocol.

Lusambo loops Mutati into his defence

Lusambo loops Mutati into his defence

JAILED former Lusaka province minister Bowman Lusambo has listed Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati as a to witness to help weave him out of this protracted legal battles.

Lusambo hopes Mutati’s court testimony will help solidify his innocence claims in a case where he is being prosecuted on two counts of possession of properties reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime.

The Bulldozer is already on his defence on the case but says he will call four witnesses to prove his innocence.

Through his lawyer, Charles Changano, the former Kabushi lawmaker informed the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court that h4 wanted Mutati to come and testify before court.

He said the summons are not yet served, but he will serve on him to come to court and testify.

According to court documents, Lusambo on a date unknown but between May 1, 2015 and December 31, 2021 in Lusaka, jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown, allegedly possessed property number F/609/E/44/B/9, comprising of a single storey four (4) bedroom dwelling house, guest wing, gazebo and a car shed located in Chamba Valley-Lusaka, property reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime.

In count two, it is alleged that Lusambo on a date unknown but between May 1, 2015 and December 31, 2021 in Lusaka, jointly and whilst acting together with others unknown did possessed an incomplete block of six (6) flats, constructed on property number F/609/E/50 in Chamba Valley Lusaka, properties reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime.

Meanwhile, a defence witness, Kapumba Franklin Zimba,46, an Evaluation Surveyor in private practice said Lusambo’s house was over valued, it was supposed to be K8.8 million and not K13.5 million as government surveyors put it.

Zimba said the print out of the house by government surveyors from the Ministry of land relied upon had a mistake.

He said according to the government report, the extent for farm 609 which the subdivision Lusambo has title to the land extent is stated as 0.8920 hectors.

Zimba stated that he found out that Lusambo’s farm 609 in Chamba Valley where his house is, holds an hector of 0.0892 and not 0.8920.

He said the government surveyors omitted a zero in front of eight and put zero at the end.

“I established that there was an error in the measurements by the government surveyors, so where you have an error in hectors it means what you have as market value is fraud.”

“In this particular case the error in the land estate has been overstated meaning the market value of the property has also been overstated,” he said.

He said to cure the error that everyone was operating on, he indicated the property number of Lusambo’s farm where he holds time, and also the three additional property numbers the development was carried out.

And when asked in cross examination if he found any errors or flaws in the manner government surveyors arrived at the reinstatement value. He responded in the negative.

“As I indicated earlier, I was supposed to bring four witnesses but only managed to bring one, I apologize, I want to summon and bring my witness, Felix Mutati, I failed today, but I will try, we are asking for an adjournment,” Changano said.

The court granted an adjournment and set June 2, 2025 for continued defence.

CSOs IN KITWE CALL FOR TWO-TERM LIMIT FOR MPs

CSOs IN KITWE CALL FOR TWO-TERM LIMIT FOR MPs

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Kitwe District on the Copperbelt Province are calling for a constitutional amendment to limit Members of Parliament (MPs) to a maximum of two terms in office.

The organisations argue that such a move would enhance democratic governance, promote leadership renewal, and prevent the consolidation of power by long-serving lawmakers.

Speaking to Mafken News, Democratic Governance and Human Advocate (DEGHA) Programs Officer Victor Chilufya emphasized the urgency of the proposal, saying that limiting the tenure of MPs would help usher in fresh perspectives and strengthen public accountability.

Echoing similar sentiments, Change Mindset Zambia Executive Director Geoffrey Musonda, highlighted the broader benefits of leadership renewal.

Zambia needs a leadership disruption – DU

Zambia needs a leadership disruption – DU

By Francis Chipalo

The Democratic Union (DU) says there is need for a disruption of leadership in Zambia, and has since challenged the country’s youth to rise to the occasion and take charge.

Meanwhile, the DU states that the biggest opposition the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) will face in next year’s much – anticipated general elections are the Zambian people themselves.

UPND media director Mark Simuwe, at a recent briefing confidently stated that President Hakainde Hichilema will easily scoop next year’s elections as there is currently no opposition worth challenging him and the UPND.

Simuwe further challenged the opposition to give their manifestos to Zambians than being rhetoric.

But speaking in an interview, DU leader Ackim Anthony Njobvu claims that the UPND has become intoxicated with power and that they are headed for shock in 2026.

The opposition leader said majority of Zambians have suffered in the four years of President Hichilema’s reign.

He stated that claims that there is no opposition in the country are misplaced, saying that the biggest opposition HH will face are citizens.

“Need I remind them that what I led the Patriotic Front to lose in 2021 was as a result of a protest vote by Zambians who were tired with certain things like issues of cadres, and not that the UPND was a popular party because truth is they were not and even now UPND is not as popular as they claim,” Njobvu said.

Njobvu further said the UPND has struggled to deliver because they lost direction and chose persecuting their opponents.

He further called for civility and issue – based politics.

“Instead of them focusing on national development they just keep on fighting and persecuting opponents at the expense of the Zambian people,” he said.

Njobvu also said the political status in Zambia can only change by getting rid of recycled leaders.

“We need to civilize our politics and get rid of these old folks so that they can go and rest, but for that to happen, there is need for a disruption, something new needs to happen and these changes can only be made by the youth of this country,” he added.

Meanwhile, Njobvu stated that the disunity among the opposition is a source of concern.

“The challenge is that the UPND has been very brutal on both the opposition and ordinary citizens and they have made the opposition to be fighting amongst themselves, denying Zambians an alternative voice,” Njobvu said.

Njobvu added; “we have so many challenges in this country to do with the welfare of citizens and what does this government start thinking about is themselves by bringing constitutional reforms based on nothing but their own selfish interests”.

The outspoken politician  called for unity among young people, adding that it is time for the youth to take charge of running the affairs of the nation and that 2026 elections presents that opportunity.
