ZAMBIA RANKS THIRD AMONG WORLD’S SAFEST COUNTRIES

ZAMBIA RANKS THIRD AMONG WORLD’S SAFEST COUNTRIES

May 7,2025
Lusaka – In a remarkable achievement, Zambia has climbed the global safety ranks, securing the third position among the world’s safest countries, according to the latest Global Peace Index.

This remarkable milestone highlights the country’s commitment to peace, public security, and good governance under the leadership of the United Party for National Development (UPND).

The report underscores Zambia’s political stability, peaceful transitions of power, and significant strides in curbing political violence as key factors behind this success.

Under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration, the country has seen a strengthened focus on maintaining law and order, fostering national unity, and promoting peaceful coexistence among diverse communities.

One of the standout achievements noted is Zambia’s ranking as the second-lowest country worldwide in terms of terrorism threat, a statistic that has attracted the attention of investors, tourists, and migration experts alike.

The country, which is home to one of the world’s seven natural wonders, the majestic Mosi-oa-Tunya, now ranks higher in safety than countries like France, China, India, and Thailand.

The 2025 Global Safety Report also highlights Zambia’s comparatively lower crime rate than some Western nations, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia.

This accomplishment is attributed to the country’s effective policies in crime prevention and community engagement initiatives championed by the current administration.

In Africa, Zambia is the third safest country, following Mauritius and Ghana, which occupy the first and second spots respectively.

Namibia and Morocco complete the continent’s top five safest nations.

The recognition also emphasizes Zambia’s economic growth and social development, which have played crucial roles in promoting safety and security.

President Hichilema and the UPND government continue to focus on sustaining this positive trajectory by further strengthening public institutions, enhancing community policing efforts, and maintaining zero tolerance towards political violence.

These deliberate measures reflect the administration’s commitment to creating a safe, peaceful, and prosperous Zambia for all.

MAN CLAIMS TO BE YO MAPS’ FATHER DESPITE THE SINGER REVEALING HE’S A DOUBLE ORPHAN

MAN CLAIMS TO BE YO MAPS’ FATHER DESPITE THE SINGER REVEALING HE’S A DOUBLE ORPHAN

Several clips of a man claiming to be the Zambian superstar Yo Maps’ father are making rounds on social media. The man claims that Yo Maps’ mother took him away whilst he was working in Solwezi in 1999 and living in Luanshya.

Whilst on the Kenny T 1 ON 1 podcast last week Thursday, singer Yo Maps gave a tough revelation of his upbringing as he said his mother and father passed away when he was young and added that he never saw his father. The singer also added that his blood relatives had abandoned him for over 20 years.

Everyone was in shock when videos of a man only identified as Wilton Mulenga alias Bashi Bianca from Mpika went viral as the man made claims that he is Yo Maps’ father and contrary to the singer’s revelation on the interview, his mother is also alive in Chipata.

Mr. Wilton Mulenga also said that he named the singer after his favourite renowned British singer and songwriter Elton John before smiling, saying his son has turned out to be a musician just like his favourite artist.

In dismissing allegations of only wanting to know him because he is now famous and rich. Mr Wilton Mulenga said he never knew where he was and it was only in 2023 that he found out Yo Maps was his son Elton Mulenga.

The person who made efforts to find the father, said Mr. Wilton Mulenga’s efforts to reach the singer in 2024 prove futile as the singer can’t be reached through strange numbers.

Social users are highly skeptical as they have made assertions that the man is mistaking the singer for another Elton Mulenga further starting that this case is similar to that of Lucky Dube while others have said the man is just trying to get money from the singer.

Yo Maps is yet to make a statement but from his interview, he made it clear that he wants nothing to do with his blood relatives as the whole entire 20 years he was living with his adopted parents, no one from his bloodline cared to reach out until when he became famous. Could the singer’s father be alive?

Mfuwe MP Maureen Mabonga’s seditious case set for judgement today

Mfuwe MP’s seditious case set for judgement today

LUSAKA Senior Resident Magistrate, Trever Kasanda will today at 09:00 hours deliver Judgement in a matter where Mfuwe member of Parliament, Maureen Mabonga is facing two counts of seditious practices.

Mabonga pleaded not guilty to two counts of Seditious prac

tices contrary to the laws of Zambia.

It is alleged in count one that Mabonga on a date unknown but between May 25 and 28 2024 in Lusaka uttered seditious words.

“Do you want us to be moving with guns? Start killing each other? Is this where we are going? Is this what we want as Zambians? Because we can do it,” Mabonga was cited.

“Today it is Jay Jay that has been abducted. Tomorrow it is another person and you want us to sit back and relax… After all, you got power. We don’t understand why people are still bitter. Country men and women we are going to fight if it is the fight they want we are going to fight and we are ready to fight.”

These remarks were among other words uttered were deemed tto incite violence or any offence prejudicial to public order or in disturbance of the public peace.

Earlier, the court found her with a case to answer and put her on defence after the state proved their case beyond reasonable doubts.

Mabonga in her defence explained that she never committed any crime by defending her fellow opposition leaders from threats allegedly issued by the ruling United party for national development (UPND).

She said she watched the videos on Facebook where former president, Edgar Lungu was allegedly being attacked and insulted by cadres.

Mabonga explained that the disrespect was not only smeared on the former president but also on other PF members of parliament such Mambilima Member of Parliament, Jean Chisenga, Petauke member of Parliament Emmanuel Jay Banda among others.

Mabonga said it was such issues that made her decide to be part of the PF members who organised to have a press conference and discuss the mentioned issues.

She said her utterances and comments at the said press conference, led to her charges of sedition and eventually, into the matter before the Lusaka Magistrate Court.

Mabonga further explained that in the charge relating to count one, she was responding to the threats that were issued by the UPND from Western and Southern provinces.

“My words were not seditious and I didn’t intend to promote any violence, I intended to bring out these issues to the attention of the nation and the law enforcement agencies,” she said.

She said as a Member of Parliament, she has been receiving information from people and cadres from PF who felt that they were being suppressed.

“UPND cadres had called PF criminals, I was trying to bring that out, I didn’t intend to promote ill will, I intended to bring all these issues to the attention of the authorities and the law enforcement agencies and the nation at large,” said Mabonga.

She added that was an MP, representing a section of society, therefore she had a right to speak for and on behalf of the said people.

Mabonga emphasised that she was a calm person by nature and everyone around her was safe.

Zambian Parliament: UPND Faces Uphill Battle to Pass Constitutional Amendment

Uphill Battle to Amend the Constitution.

Zambian Parliament: UPND Faces Uphill Battle to Pass Constitutional Amendment

Current Parliamentary Composition

As of 2025, Zambia’s National Assembly comprises 167 seats, with the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) holding 93 seats . The main opposition, the Patriotic Front (PF), has 55 seats, while independent members and smaller parties hold 14 seats, and 1 seat remains vacant .

Constitutional Amendment Requirements
To pass a constitutional amendment, Zambia’s constitution mandates a two-thirds majority (111 votes) in the National Assembly . The UPND’s current 93 seats mean they require an additional 18 votes to secure passage.

Challenges for the UPND
1. Opposition Resistance:
The PF has historically opposed amendments perceived as consolidating executive power, as seen in their rejection of the 2020 “Bill 10,” which failed with only 105 votes .

2. Independent MPs:
While 12 independents could theoretically bridge the gap, past trends show they rarely align uniformly with the ruling party .

3. Floor-Crossing
Controversies: Recent attempts to declare PF seats vacant over alleged “crossing the floor” were dismissed by the Speaker, who ruled such decisions fall under judicial—not parliamentary—authority .

Potential Outcomes
– Failure: Without securing 18 extra votes, the bill will likely fail, mirroring the PF’s 2020 defeat.
Negotiations: The UPND could lobby independents or smaller parties, but polarization makes this difficult .
-Political Fallout: A failed amendment may fuel accusations of UPND overreach, while success could trigger protests .

Recent Developments

The UPND gained the Pambashe seat in a February 2025 by-election, slightly improving their numbers .

The Lumezi Constituency by-election (scheduled for June 2025) following Munir Zulu’s conviction could further shift dynamics .

Conclusion
Given the UPND’s slim margin and opposition cohesion, the amendment’s passage appears unlikely unless unprecedented cross-party support emerges. Historical precedent and current tensions suggest a protracted legislative battle ahead.

CYBER CRIME: TRIBALISM INCLUDING COMMENTS LIKE; “WE CAN SEE FROM THE SURNNAME AS THEY COMMENT” TO LAND OFFENDERS IN JAIL FOR LIFE

CYBER CRIME: TRIBALISM INCLUDING COMMENTS LIKE; “WE CAN SEE FROM THE SURNNAME AS THEY COMMENT” TO LAND OFFENDERS IN JAIL FOR LIFE

Tribalists face life imprisonment under cyber law

THE era of using social media to stir ethnic tension, promote hate or spread fear may be nearing its end, as the refined cyber law introduces strict penalties, including life imprisonment for such conduct.

On this one, not even a fine can save you because upon conviction, the only punishment you get is an orange suit, bald head and some overcooked cabbage and beans for life.

The Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025, under Section 24, criminalises the use of digital platforms to incite ethnic division, support terrorism or recruit individuals into extremist activities.

Individuals found guilty of such offences risk spending the rest of their lives behind bars.

The law targets a growing trend where online platforms, once meant for connection and expression are being misused by some sewer mouthed individuals like ‘Why Me’ to spread harmful content that threatens national unity.

Using Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp or any other digital platform to pit one ethnic group against another, ridicule communities or make posts that glorify violence and inspire fear among citizens will definitely send you to jail forever.

Under Section 24(1)(b) of the Act, it is an offence to use a computer or internet service to incite or attempt to incite ethnic divisions among the people of Zambia.

The law extends to those committing the offence of encouraging terrorism or enticing individuals to join or finance terrorist groups whether within or outside the country.

“A person commits an offence if that person uses a computer or computer system to—
(a) incite, urge, teach or train any person in or out of the Republic to commit or participate in the commission of a terrorist act or an offence under the Anti-Terrorism and Non-Proliferation Act, 2018; (b) incite or attempt to incite ethnic divisions among the people of the Republic; (c) encourage, entice, induce or motivate any person in the Republic to join a terrorist group or to commit or participate in the commission of an offence in relation to financing of terrorism under the Anti Terrorism and Non-Proliferation Act, 2018,” reads Section 24, subsection (1).

Subsection (2) states that “a person who contravenes subsection (1), commits an
offence and is liable, on conviction, to imprisonment for life.”

PROPHET AMATA ASSURES PF OF 2026 VICTORY BY WORD OF MOUTH

By Henry MWENJENGA

Usually prophets including profits use their spiritual dreams to see what is ahead but for PROPHET Isaac Amata who is from Nigeria, this is not the case.

In 2021, he assured PF of victory and last week he did the same.

According to his games, Amata has seen in his spiritual voice that PF will come back in 2026.

What he doesn’t disclose is the fact that PF currently has no leader but he has been advising Jean Kapata to keep showing up at PF faction events in case his dream comes true.- Koswe

Given Lubinda says the explanation by government distancing itself from Chabinga was cosmetic, a PR stunt

ARREST CHABINGA FOR SEDITION

…as Given Lubinda says the explanation by government distancing itself from Chabinga was cosmetic, a PR stunt, a slap on the wrist and a smokescreen to hoodwink the diplomatic corps and the nation at large and what he did was a crime.

By: Daily Nation Newspaper

Robert Chabinga, who threatened to forcibly remove President Hakainde Hichilema from office for allegedly collaborating with the opposition, should be arrested for sedition, Patriotic Front (PF) acting president Given Lubinda has demanded.

Mr. Lubinda said the government’s reaction to Mr. Chabinga’s actions was cosmetic and would not suffice. He charged that the explanation was nothing but a PR stunt and a slap on the wrist.

He emphasized that what Mr. Chabinga did was a serious crime and required serious action.

“CHABINGA ABOVE THE LAW?” – MWANZA SLAMS SELECTIVE JUSTICE

“CHABINGA ABOVE THE LAW?” – MWANZA SLAMS SELECTIVE JUSTICE

The Civil Society Consortium has unleashed a firestorm against Patriotic Front (PF) faction leader Robert Chabinga, accusing him of hiding behind political connections to escape prosecution for inflammatory remarks that would land any other Zambian behind bars.

Consortium Chairperson Isaac Mwanza issued a damning statement yesterday, charging that Chabinga’s insulting comments against former President Edgar Lungu and foreign diplomats constitute a clear violation of Section 71 of the Penal Code, which criminalizes degrading speech against foreign dignitaries.

“Justice must be blind not blinkered by party colors,” Mwanza declared. “Chabinga’s reckless utterances meet the threshold for prosecution, yet he remains untouched while others are jailed for far less.”

The condemnation comes just days after blogger Elias Musyani and Hon. Munir Zulu, MP for Lumezi, were imprisoned for criminal defamation highlighting what critics say is a dangerous pattern of selective justice by the Hichilema administration.

“We are not calling for Chabinga’s imprisonment,” Mwanza clarified, “but we reject the State’s hypocrisy in jailing dissenters while shielding loyalists. This two-tier justice system is an insult to our democracy.”

Chabinga’s position as a staunch ally of the ruling UPND and a controversial PF faction head has drawn increasing scrutiny. His recent vitriol directed at diplomatic representatives has been branded not only irresponsible but damaging to Zambia’s global standing.

“As a senior MP on the Standing Orders Committee, Chabinga should exemplify integrity not recklessness,” Mwanza added. “His rise to power was riddled with questionable legitimacy, and now his unchecked arrogance is staining the reputation of Parliament.”

The Consortium has renewed calls for the immediate repeal of criminal defamation laws, but says if the law must exist, it must apply to all equally regardless of political alignment.

“Zambia must choose: uphold justice for all, or protect the powerful few,” Mwanza warned.

As opposition figures rally behind the statement and public frustration grows, the silence from State House is deafening.

Project 2026 and Beyond- On Making Zambia a Power Exporter and an Electricity Hub- Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Project 2026 and Beyond- On Making Zambia a Power Exporter and an Electricity Hub

Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba Wrote;

Zambia has coal deposits whose reserves can power major power stations for the next 200 years.

Further Zambia has many potential sites for more hydro power stations especially in the northern and Northwestern circuits.

Our shift for power baseload will be to coal as technology  now exists that mitigates greenhouse emissions from power plants.

Renewable sources of power such as solar and wind will be complimentary to the hydro and coal power stations producing power.

Our goal is to produce 10 000 megawatts in the next two-five years that will make Zambia an immediate electricity regional hub and major exporter of power to both the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP) and East Africa Power Pool (EAPP).

Another matter, we will replace charcoal used in households (to stop the wanton cutting down of trees) with coal briquettes.

We will immediately renegotiate exploitative tariffs that Independent Power Producers (IPP) such as Maamba Collieries rip-off from ZESCO and the milking using low rates offered through Bulk Supplier Agreements granted to firms like CEC.

Further the new phenomenon that has created middlemen known as power traders ripping off snd sidelining, ZESCO role as an importer and exporter will be reviewed.

Africa has a serious deficit of electricity with over 640 million Africans have no access to energy, corresponding to an electricity access rate for African countries at just over 40 percent, the lowest in the world.

Per capita consumption of energy in sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) is 180 kWh, compared to 13,000 kWh per capita in the United States and 6,500 kWh in Europe.

PARENTS SHOULD BE ARRESTED FOR NEGLIGENCE SIMON  MWEWA  LANE APPEALS

PARENTS SHOULD BE ARRESTED FOR NEGLIGENCE MWEWA APPEALS

CHITAMBALA Mwewa a property manager of Simoson building has appealed for authorities to arrest and charge the parents for negligence.

According to Mwewa in developed countries the parents of the three children who perished in a house fire should have been subjected to intense questioning on why that tragedy happened.

“Leaving little children locked up in a house is negligence. In other countries the parents would have been arrested and charged with ‘Negligence’ but in Zambia we ignore that fact.

The fire department needs to inform the public on what actaully caused the fire. Had there been an adult present, the story would have been different. The parents were at fault” – says Mwewa

Zambia’s New SOE Policy 2024, A Pathway to Efficient Public Sector Investment

Zambia’s New SOE Policy 2024, A Pathway to Efficient Public Sector Investment

The Government of Zambia has unveiled its Revised State-Owned Enterprise Policy (2024), signaling a decisive shift toward strengthening governance, improving performance, and maximizing returns from state-owned enterprises (SOEs). This strategic policy update comes at a time when most SOEs are grappling with high debt burdens, weak capital bases, and ineffective oversight frameworks.

State-Owned Enterprises play a pivotal role in bridging market failures and delivering critical public goods. From railways to utilities, SOEs underpin Zambia’s socio-economic infrastructure. However, despite efforts through the 2012 SOE Policy and the formation of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) in 2014, operational inefficiencies and governance deficits have persisted.

According to the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, the revised policy addresses key structural weaknesses in Zambia’s SOE landscape. It introduces a more robust governance and regulatory framework designed to enhance transparency, accountability, and financial viability. Notably, the policy clarifies roles among shareholder ministries, holding companies, and boards of directors a long-missing piece that often blurred accountability lines.

The policy’s core objectives include:

Strengthening SOE oversight and corporate governance.

Aligning SOE performance with national development goals.

Reducing fiscal risk to the Treasury through better financial management.

Promoting private sector participation and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs).

Implementation will be guided by clearly defined performance targets, legal compliance standards, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) benchmarks. The IDC, acting as the Government’s investment arm, will play a central role in managing SOE shareholding interests, alongside strategic ministries.

Economic analysts have welcomed the revised policy as a long-overdue reform that could unlock efficiency and value in Zambia’s public sector. However, the policy’s success hinges on political will, professional management, and the discipline to avoid undue interference in SOE operations.

As Zambia positions itself for economic recovery and investor confidence, this new policy may well determine whether SOEs become national assets or liabilities in the years ahead.

ZAMBIA MUST ACT NOW OR RISK ECONOMIC RUIN – IMF DEPUTY CHIEF

ZAMBIA MUST ACT NOW OR RISK ECONOMIC RUIN – IMF DEPUTY CHIEF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a stern warning to Zambia, urging the country to strengthen its economic defenses or risk being overwhelmed by future shocks. During an official policy address in Lusaka, IMF Deputy Managing Director Dr. Nigel Clarke declared, “Prepare or perish,” as he outlined Zambia’s urgent need to build stronger fiscal and monetary buffers.

Dr. Clarke, speaking at the Intercontinental Hotel, stressed that Zambia’s path to resilience lies in preparation and strategic planning. “Building economic resilience is among the most important things that Zambia is working towards,” he said, referencing repeated global disruptions including droughts, rising commodity prices, and tightening financial conditions.

Among the IMF’s key recommendations were four pillars: the accumulation of strategic reserves during stable periods, sustainable debt management, strengthening foreign exchange reserves, and diversifying energy sources to reduce vulnerability to natural disasters. Clarke emphasized that without these buffers, Zambia’s economy remains exposed to frequent external shocks.

He cited Zambia’s 2024 drought response as a successful case of buffer utilization, where targeted social support was rolled out without undermining macroeconomic stability. However, he warned that such interventions are only possible if the country builds adequate reserves and reduces dependency on external bailouts.

Zambia’s ballooning foreign debt, which reached $21.6 billion by the end of 2024, remains a significant threat to economic stability. Clarke called for fiscal responsibility and forward-looking reforms to create space for counter-cyclical policy actions in times of crisis. “Debt down, reserves up,” he advised a simple but urgent formula for stability.

The IMF also urged Zambia to accelerate diversification of its energy mix, particularly as climate volatility continues to impact hydropower generation. Clarke noted that physical and economic resilience are intertwined and must be addressed together through smart investment and policy discipline.

As Zambia pushes through debt restructuring talks and battles ongoing energy shortages, Clarke’s message resonates as a cautionary call: survival in today’s global economy demands not only hope, but hard-nosed preparation. Without buffers, Zambia risks reliving crisis after crisis. With them, it can weather any storm.

I USED TO MOVE FROM ONE HOUSE TO THE NEXT JUST TO EAT AFTER MY MOTHER DIED SAID YO MAPS ON LOSING PARENTS AND HIS ADOPTION

I USED TO MOVE FROM ONE HOUSE TO THE NEXT JUST TO EAT AFTER MY MOTHER DIED SAID YO MAPS ON LOSING PARENTS AND HIS ADOPTION

After his mother’s death, Yo Maps and his only sister where at a crossroads as family members scrambled for the sister who would relocate back in Kasama with an uncle leaving Yo Maps rejected as the relatives felt they had enough boys and couldn’t take one more.

Yo Maps would become a nomad, moving from one house to another just to eat. The singer would not see his sister until 19 years later further revealing that at the request of his adopting parents when he started making money, he took her to study nursing at Lusaka Apex Medical University and is currently working.

The singer would later find himself in Chiyuni at his cousin’s in-laws’ place. At this point, Yo Maps had started a mini business of putting songs in memory cards. He further added that it was during this period that he started making beats on a computer outside the family shop in the village.

The singer’s troubles were far from over as the farm he was staying at was part of a property dispute as the owner had died. Hence, they were, from time to time, told to vacate the premises.

“That’s how he took me from Chiyuni. Took me to Chibombo, and I started living with them. He introduced me to his wife, right now, she’s my mom(laughs). That’s how we started living together, from that time until today,” recounted Yo Maps on being saved from family wrangles by a stranger. “His name is Muyunda Mundia, I’m Elton Mulenga. He’s Lozi, I’m Bemba,” added the singer.

A man who would occasionally visit the shop Yo Maps Yo was recording songs from a computer and a microphone while charging to put music in people’s memory cards would get acquainted to the young Elton Mulenga hence seeing it befitting to rescue him from the family troubles in Chiyuni and moved to Chibombo allowing Yo Maps to have a family.

The singer was easily accepted and integrated into the family –

GOODBYE CIVIL SERVICE – Dr. Gabriel Bwalya Nsofwa

GOODBYE CIVIL SERVICE
By Dr. Gabriel Bwalya Nsofwa

To those who disseminated falsehoods about me during my tenure in government, which led to my transfer to Mongu District – a decision I subsequently rejected, culminating in my resignation – I am pleased to announce that I have received formal confirmation from the government accepting my resignation. I am relieved that this response has arrived, as I am now at liberty to pursue other endeavors.

Be advised, however, that the principles of reciprocity and divine retribution dictate that the measure with which you treat others will be applied to you in equal measure. Your actions will inevitably yield consequences.

To the UPND Party and government, I offer the following remarks: Throughout my tenure while you were in opposition, I made considerable sacrifices on your behalf, enduring hardships, risking my livelihood, and imperiling the well-being of my family. These efforts ultimately contributed to your ascension to power. Rather than acknowledging and rewarding my dedication, you opted to penalize me, precipitating my premature departure from office. I must express my profound disappointment and disillusionment with this ungrateful response. Please be aware that the positions you currently occupy are transitory and ephemeral. The judgment of posterity will ultimately prevail, and divine justice will be served.

Fortunately, I have successfully transitioned to a new role, thanks to the benevolence and kindness of others. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my new employers, whose generosity and compassion have been a source of immense comfort and solace. As a devout individual, I find solace in the biblical maxim that all experiences, regardless of their inherent nature, can be transformed into catalysts for personal growth and development.

My motivation for sharing these sentiments is not to elicit sympathy or pity, as I am presently in a stable and secure position, thanks to the intervention of benevolent individuals. Rather, I aim to caution the UPND Party and government against the practice of penalizing and marginalizing those who have made significant sacrifices on their behalf. This paradoxical behavior, wherein individuals who have demonstrated loyalty and dedication are discarded in favor of those who have disparaged and reviled you, is both confounding and distressing. As a devout individual, I am confident that divine justice will ultimately prevail, and that the Almighty will vindicate those who have been wronged.

I find immense comfort and solace in the biblical affirmation that God is faithful to those who have been called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ. This unwavering faithfulness has been a source of sustenance and inspiration throughout my journey. Shalom! Sola Deo Gloria: to God alone be all the glory.

RTSA BANS DRIVING SCHOOL INVOLVED IN CORRUPTION OF ISSUING DRIVING LICENSES

The Road Transport and Safety Agency is alarmed by the high road traffic fatalities in Zambia.

RTSA Chief Executive Officer Amon Mweemba says the numbers are unacceptable, attributing them to increased vehicle numbers.

Speaking during a quarterly press briefing, Mr. Mweemba revealed 8,000 accidents and 498 deaths in the first quarter of 2025.

To combat this, RTSA has introduced AI-powered cameras to detect traffic offenses and instantly charge violators.

In another development, the agency has also banned a driving school embroiled in a corruption scandal involving license issuance.

Mr. Mweemba disclosed  that several RTSA officers face suspension pending investigation.

ONLY FAZ PRESIDENT CAN CHAIR AGM – TEDDY  MULONGA

ONLY FAZ PRESIDENT CAN CHAIR AGM – MULONGA

By Cecilia Nayame

FORMER Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Teddy Mulonga says the only person mandated to chair the FAZ elective annual general meeting (AGM) is the incumbent president as prescribed by the constitution.

And Mulonga has called for amendment of the FAZ constitution to align some articles within the required standards.

Mulonga said in an interview yesterday that no other member of the association was allowed to preside over an AGM apart from the president.

He said in the absence of the president, the association’s vice president was legally mandated to take over duties of the president.

“So the question of who presides over the meeting (AGM) for the Council, it’s only the incumbent president not anybody else…in the absence of the incumbent, then the vice president of the association takes over,” Mulonga said.

He quoted Article 38, subsection five of the FAZ constitution which stipulated the chairman’s role during an AGM.

He said in a case where the AGM is deferred to a later date and having the mandate of the executive expired, the incumbent was still at liberty to chair the meeting within his capacity.

“In this case, we are talking about a meeting which was deferred, my request to the councillors is to remember what we are dealing with here, a deferred AGM.

“The meeting was deferred not because the mandate for the old executive had expired, no, but because somebody outside went and brought in an injunction. So when the meeting is deferred, it does not mean the chairmanship has changed…it’s important to always get back to the constitution and read what it states,” he said.

Government, through the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) has directed FAZ general secretary Reuben Kamanga to chair the AGM set for this Friday at Misuku Lodge in Kabwe because Andrew Kamanga’s tenure, who is the incumbent president has come to an end.

And Mulonga has urged councillors not to allow any situation that would jeopardies the running of football in the country.

He said it was important for councillors to remain firm as they go for the AGM.

“My plea to the councilors is that they should not allow any situation that will jeopardies football in this country.  Like I said, football has been set by rules, played by rules and also lost by rules. It’s a game for all of us and it must be protected by all of us,” he said.

Mulonga said football was a unifying sport which needed to be protected by all well-meaning Zambians.

“Football is the biggest unifier we have at the present moment. When the Zambia national team is playing, they do not play as an individual but as a team and we need to take a leaf from that,” he said.

Mulonga also said it was important to protect the pride of players especially those who are abroad.

“When they [Zambia national team] win, we all rejoice as Zambia. So don’t jeopardies the Barbara Banda girls who are doing very well outside there,” he said.

Mulonga appealed to the incoming FAZ executive to continue building on the successes made towards improving the sport in the country.

“Whoever is coming into FAZ they should build on the successes and correct things. They should take their role seriously especially when dealing with issues concerning the association,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mulonga said it was important for the new executive to work within the confines of the FIFA statutes to avoid abrogating the FAZ constitution.

“FIFA does not accept any decisions made from outside FAZ council. Football is very democratic,” he said.

Lusaka lawyer Keith Mweemba, former FAZ vice president Emmanuel Munaile and former FAZ general secretary Adrian Kashala are challenging incumbent president Andrew Kamanga for the FAZ presidency.

Zambia’s Fertilizer Deal with OCP Africa, A Boost for the Ordinary Zambian

Zambia’s Fertilizer Deal with OCP Africa, A Boost for the Ordinary Zambian

Zambia’s latest Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with OCP Africa, signed on May 6, 2025, is more than a high-level agreement it’s a turning point for thousands of ordinary Zambians whose lives depend on agriculture. The partnership promises affordable fertilizer, new jobs, and a stronger path to food security.

At the core of this agreement is the construction of a 600,000-ton-per-year fertilizer blending plant, along with green ammonia production and a secure phosphate supply. These initiatives will drastically reduce Zambia’s dependence on imported fertilizer, cutting costs for farmers and ensuring year-round access to high-quality inputs

For many small-scale farmers, fertilizer prices have been a major barrier to productivity. Imported products are often expensive and not suited to specific soil needs. Through this MoU, local production will allow for customized blends that match Zambia’s diverse soil types boosting yields and saving farmers money.

The impact goes beyond crops. With more than 1,000 direct jobs expected from the new plant and supporting facilities, the agreement opens doors for rural youths, skilled technicians, transporters, and agro-dealers. It’s an opportunity to link agriculture to employment in a meaningful way.

“This isn’t just about fertilizer; it’s about people,” said IDC CEO Cornwell Muleya. “It’s about turning plans into real impact for families and communities across Zambia.” He emphasized the urgency of implementation and IDC’s commitment to transforming promises into progress.

And Minister of Agriculture Reuben Mtolo Phiri echoed the sentiment, calling the deal a “milestone” for sustainable agricultural development. He highlighted the inclusion of a national soil mapping program, which will support precision farming and ensure that farmers apply the right fertilizer at the right time.

In addition to infrastructure and inputs, the agreement includes training and knowledge exchange through demonstration farms and capacity-building programs. Zambian farmers will learn new techniques, backed by Moroccan agricultural expertise, to improve crop care and maximize harvests.

This partnership supports Zambia’s broader Vision 2030 goal of becoming a regional agricultural powerhouse. By making farming more productive and less dependent on imports, the country is taking clear steps toward food security, export potential, and industrialisation.

For the everyday Zambian, especially those in rural areas. This MoU offers hope. Hope for better harvests, decent jobs, lower costs, and a future where agriculture is not just survival, but a pathway to prosperity.

“BEYOND THE BURIAL: THE REAL STRUGGLE BEGINS”

“BEYOND THE BURIAL: THE REAL STRUGGLE BEGINS”

BY TIMMY

As I write this article, I’m reminded of the devastating situation I once faced same time back last year, where I lost everything in a house fire, albeit without the loss of life. Today, I’m compelled to highlight the struggles of a couple who lost their house and three precious children in a fire tragedy. The outpouring of support they’ve received has been heartwarming, and we appreciate the overwhelming response from well-wishers, including mental, spiritual, and financial help.

In our African culture, it’s common for communities to come together during funerals, offering support and condolences. And that’s exactly what has happened in this case. People have rallied around the family, providing assistance from the day of the funeral to the burial. May God bless those who have contributed in various ways.

However, as we all know, the real struggle begins after the burial. When the crowds disperse, and the immediate support fades away, the family is left to pick up the pieces. The emotional, mental, and financial stress can be overwhelming. That’s why it’s crucial that the support doesn’t end at the burial.

We urge those who attended the funeral, including politicians and high-profile individuals, to continue their support in the days, weeks, months and years ahead. Financial assistance, in particular, will be crucial in helping the couple rebuild their lives. The SDA Church and UPND’s efforts in taking over funeral responsibilities and providing support are commendable, and we hope others will follow suit.

The UPND’s donation of foodstuffs, assorted items, and commitment to covering funeral expenses, including burial logistics, is an example of their compassion and commitment to the community. The allocation of 60 buses to assist with transportation is also a significant gesture.

As we move forward, let’s ensure that the couple receives the support they need to heal and rebuild. Let’s show them that we care not just during the funeral but in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

May God bless this family and grant them strength during this difficult time.

Ugandan woman m8rders her husband and buries his body beneath the floor of their bedroom

A 43-year-old Ugandan woman is accused of m8rdering her husband and burying his body beneath the floor of their bedroom, a crime that has shocked a quiet rural community and unearthed a web of unanswered questions surrounding land deals, paternity, and hidden motives.

Sharon Nshemereirwe is alleged to have k!lled her husband, Beinomugisha, in their mud-and-wattle home in Kaniga I village, Buhweju district, Rwengwe subcounty.

According to police investigations, the motive remains unclear, but the details emerging from the case paint a grim picture of betrayal and concealed truths.

The disappearance of Beinomugisha initially prompted inquiries from friends and relatives.

Nshemereirwe reportedly told them her husband had gone to South Sudan for work.

“He got a construction job and is working hard for us,” she consistently claimed.

However, family members grew suspicious.

Investigators believe the murder occurred on the night of Thursday, April 13, 2025.

Nshemereirwe allegedly struck her husband in the head with a hammer while he slept. Afterward, she is said to have wrapped his body in bedsheets, a blanket, and a tarpaulin before burying him in a shallow grave dug under their bedroom floor. The burial site was then covered with more tarpaulin.

Before allegedly burying her husband, Nshemereirwe reportedly sent her 13-year-old son, Silver Beinomugisha, away for the day, instructing him to stay at the family’s roadside shop after school. Silver later told police he was told not to come straight home.

The silence surrounding Beinomugisha’s disappearance was eventually broken when Nshemereirwe reportedly confessed to the crime.

“I thought I could keep it to myself forever,” she allegedly told investigators. “But I broke down and told one of my siblings. I didn’t think they would tell.”

Following the alleged m8rder, Nshemereirwe reportedly locked the bedroom and began sleeping in the sitting room, meters away from her buried husband.

Further investigation revealed that five individuals were living in the home at the time: a two-week-old baby, Silver, a nine-year-old daughter with a mental disability, the deceased husband, and Nshemereirwe.

The case took another turn with the discovery of a 33-year-old woman, Caroline Kansiime, in the home when investigators arrived.

Nshemereirwe claimed Kansiime was a maid, but Kansiime said she was just visiting. She revealed she met Nshemereirwe through her sister in Kampala.

Kansiime also noted that Nshemereirwe was breastfeeding a three-week-old baby, claiming it belonged to one of her children but not specifying which one.

At Beinomugisha’s funeral, a relative, Federiko Mubangizi, claimed the baby was Nshemereirwe’s, alleging she concealed the pregnancy and later claimed the infant was abandoned by an in-law. Mubangizi pointed to a scar on Nshemereirwe’s stomach as evidence.

Local village chairperson Michael Tindyebwa said the late Beinomugisha had long doubted the baby’s paternity, leading to frequent arguments with Nshemereirwe. The couple had also reportedly fought over finances and a proposed land sale.

Frank Mukama, the local council chairperson for the area, urged police to thoroughly investigate Nshemereirwe and raised concerns about whispers that Beinomugisha had sold land shortly before his death. Tindyebwa confirmed the land sale but could not identify the buyer, raising Mukama’s suspicions.

Greater Bushenyi regional police spokesperson, Martial Tumusiime said Beinomugisha’s body was exhumed on April 31 following a court order, and a post-mortem examination was conducted.

Beinomugisha, a builder and businessman, is survived by eight children from three relationships. At the time of his death, he was reportedly helping to lay tiles at a local church.

POLICE PRESS STATEMENT: MURD£R INCIDENT REPORTED AT CHILENJE POLICE STATION

May 06, 2025

Chilenje Police Station, through Godfrey Miyanda Police Post, received a report of murd£r yesterday May 05, 2025 at approximately 18:45 hours.

The incident is reported to have occurred earlier the same day at around 17:30 hours.

The report was made by Mr. Saviour Kakoma, aged 34, of G-Greens Chalala, who reported on behalf of his friend, Mr. Innocent Ngoma of Plot No. 10622, Lilayi. The report stated that Mr. Ngoma’s live-in maid, Female/Memory Kazhila, aged 22, was allegedly st@bbed to de@th by another live-in maid, identified only as Female/Mary (other names unknown), following a dispute of yet-to-be-established in nature.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the decēãsed, who had worked for the Ngoma family for over four years, recently began sharing a bedroom with the suspect Mary, who joined the household on Saturday, May 03, 2025.

It is alleged that tensions may have arisen after the deceased confronted Mary over suspected bedwetting, though this is unconfirmed.

On the day of the incident, Mr. and Mrs. Ngoma had left for work, leaving the two maids and four children at home. A 12-year-old chïld reportedly noticed bløød seeping from the bedroom and inquired from Mary, who allegedly claimed it was from sl@ughtering a chicken.

However, upon entering the bedroom, the chïld found the deceãsed lying on the floor.

Police officers who responded to the scene found the decêased laying on her back, covered in a blanket. Physical inspection revealed deep cuts on the chest, right arm, and four incisions on the stomach, consistent with knïf£ wõunds.

The body was transported to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary, where it awaits postmortem examination and burial.

At this stage, no arrests have been made as the suspect, Mary, is currently on the run.

A manhunt has been launched, and we appeal to members of the public with any information on the whereabouts of the suspect to report to the nearest police station or contact the Zambia Police Service emergency lines.

The Zambia Police Service condemns in the strongest terms all acts of violence and reiterates its commitment to ensuring that the perpetrator is brought to justice.

US businessman sues Protea Hotel for fake dollars report to DEC, Illegal search

US businessman sues Protea Hotel for fake dollars report to DEC, Illegal search

A United States-based businessman, Zilani Mhango, has filed a lawsuit against Protea Hotel in Lusaka, alleging the hotel staff illegally searched his jacket in his absence, planted counterfeit US dollars, and subsequently made a false report to the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).

According to court documents filed in the Lusaka High Court, Mhango is seeking damages for breach of care, intentional distress, and inconvenience resulting from the hotel’s actions.

He claimed the hotel failed in its duty to safely store and return his jacket, which he had forgotten in his room 427, booked for three days after checking out on February 18, 2025.

Mhango, who was in Zambia to attend the Nc’wala traditional ceremony and planned to visit his mother in Malawi, stated that he informed the hotel staff about the forgotten jacket and was assured it was safe.

However, upon returning to the hotel later that day to retrieve it, he was arrested and detained by DEC officers.

He alleged that the arrest was based on a false report from the hotel, claiming he was in possession of US$9,700 in counterfeit currency.

During his arrest, Mhango was allegedly searched without a warrant in the Shift Manager’s office, and various personal items were seized, including Zambian Kwacha, US dollars, Malawian Kwacha, credit cards, identification, and medication.

Mhango was subsequently detained at Ridgeway Police Post for three days.

He stated that the seizure of his medication endangered his health.

The lawsuit further claimed that the hotel’s false report defamed Mhango, lowering his reputation.

“The hotel ‘s report to DEC was false and as a result of the defendant ‘s breach of duty of care to safely store and return to the plaintiff his jacket which duty was owed to him by the defendant. The subsequent arrest and detention of the plaintiff was illegal and unlawful,” the documents filed in court read.

The defendant’s false report was defamatory to him as it was intended to lower his reputation in the eyes of the right thinking members of society,” read the document.

Following the intervention of his legal representatives, Mhango was released, and his belongings, including the jacket, were returned.

A certificate of handover from the DEC allegedly confirmed that the suspected dollars were, in fact, genuine.

Mhango believes that the hotel’s conduct in searching his belongings and planting the alleged counterfeit currency was unprofessional.

He is therefore seeking damages for unlawful detention, endangerment of his health, and the loss of the opportunity to attend the Nc’wala ceremony.

KAMANGA OPENS UP BURDEN OF FUNDING NATIONAL TEAMS OUTSIDE GOVT ARMBIT

KAMANGA OPENS UP BURDEN OF FUNDING NATIONAL TEAMS OUTSIDE GOVT ARMBIT

FAZ president Andrew Kamanga says he is happy that the financial investment Football House makes in supporting junior teams has repaid with qualification to major events.

Featuring on ZNBC TV on Monday Night, Kamanga thanked government for supporting the senior men and women’s national teams but stressed that FAZ still had to foot the bill for nine other national teams.

The FAZ chief revealed that FAZ had to source for funds for the various junior teams for men and women in their participation in various tournaments.

“First of all, I must state that thanks to government, they take care of the senior men’s team and senior women’s team. That is the obligation of government. However, we have under 15, which was never there for both men and women. We have got under 17, under 20, under 23 competitions,” he said.

“All these competitions FAZ has to pay today. We are proud, I have told you in 2022, we qualified to all competitions at both CAF. We have won more COSAFA competitions. But remember that when you compete in COSAFA, you don’t get prize money for it. You spend money to go into a competition even now.”

He added, “I will give you an example. The under 17 had to go to Morocco. Do you know how much we spent $150,000 on tickets? The under 20 are currently in Egypt. Do you know how much we have had to spend on tickets? A hundred thousand dollars. The women under 17, they have just qualified to the World Cup. Do you know how much we spent on the qualifiers?”

Kamanga said his executive took a deliberate step to invest in women’s football to reap benefits that has seen the Copper Queens qualify to two Olympics, FIFA World Cup, WAFCON bronze and back-to-back FIFA World Cup qualification for the under-17 girls.

“We found it (women’s football). But what did we do? We prioritized it. We invested more in women’s football. We started winning COSAFA, started going to the Africa Cup, we have gone to the Women’s Africa Cup three times. We have gone to the Olympics twice in 2020 and 2024.We have gone to the World Cup for the first time. Senior women in 2023. We went to the World Cup for the women under 17 last year. Last week they qualified again back to the U17 World Cup. Back-to-back appearances to the World Cup. Are you telling me that has come at a zero cost?” he said.

He also cited the grand steps made in bumping up sponsorship for the league that he found at a measly K7, 000.

“When I came, clubs were getting as low as K7, 000. I had to move that from K7, 000. We started with K200, 000. It went up to K400, 000. Today, it is K1.2 million,” he said.

Kamanga said his executive worked hard to rebound the Chipolopolo after having failed to qualify for three consecutive Africa Cup of Nations.
“We had to struggle to qualify; we actually missed out on the AFCON three times. However, we took a decisive decision that we were going to invest in the grassroots and invest in the junior teams. So the first four years, we spent a lot of time without producing results, which eventually started showing in the second term, which started in 2022,” he said.

“As a result, we qualified to the 2023 Africa Cup for men and also qualified to the 2025 edition. Therefore, you can clearly see that the work we did in the first term has delivered in the second term. So for me, I am very, very happy that we have built a strong foundation.”

Kamanga hailed the work done by various independent bodies in the electoral process.
“They operate independently and we don’t even have access to these committees. I cannot instruct them to remove somebody or add somebody. It is not even possible. You can even verify independently,” he said.

“I am very happy that the process started that way, and I am also even happier that, the appeals process was able to still accommodate the others to come back. It cannot be a dent on my profile because it that is for the electoral committee to explain, but I am just giving you the appreciation of why we have judicial bodies and how important they are.”

Expert slams Trump’s push to resettle white Afrikaners

An immigration law expert is suspicious of President Donald Trump’s reported new efforts to resettle white South Africans into the United States.

Trump signed a controversial executive order in February extending refugee status to Afrikaners, a move long desired by white supremacists and that appears to have been a pet issue of Trump’s longtime ally and South African immigrant Elon Musk, who has said that country’s government has enacted racist policies against the group responsible for Apartheid.

But a new report by The Lever suggests these efforts could be taking a dramatic new step, even as the Trump administration has essentially shut down the refugee resettlement program for everyone else.

“The first group of Dutch-descended Afrikaners is scheduled to arrive in the United States imminently, and they will be receiving emergency support from the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, according to the memo, which was signed by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy and Office of Refugee Resettlement assistant secretary Andrew Gradison,” reported Katya Schwenk.

American Immigration Council attorney Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, however, expressed doubts about this whole thing in a post on X.

“I am skeptical,” he wrote. “I don’t see how this is legally or even physically possible; the refugee resettlement organizations which are necessary to complete this process have been iced out completely and people would need to be screened by Refugee Officers before they could come.”

Trump’s executive order back in February raised eyebrows because it focused not just on South Africa’s new land expropriation policy, but on “violent attacks” on white farmers, which echoes longstanding white nationalist conspiracy theories pushed by Tucker Carlson and others on the far right that there is a plot to ethnically cleanse white people from the nation.

India launches strikes on Pakistan as Islamabad vows retaliation

India fired missiles at Pakistani territory early Wednesday in a major escalation of tensions between the nuclear-armed rivals, as Islamabad vowed retaliation.

The Indian government said it had attacked nine sites, describing them as “precision strikes at terrorist camps” in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, days after it blamed Islamabad for a deadly attack on the Indian side of the contested region.

Pakistan’s army said three locations had been targeted, citing two in Pakistani-run Kashmir and one in Bahawalpur, a city in the country’s most populous province of Punjab, bordering India.

AFP correspondents in Pakistani-run Kashmir and Punjab heard several loud explosions.

“We will retaliate at the time of our choosing,” said Pakistani military spokesman Lieutenant-General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, calling the strikes a “heinous provocation.”

India had been widely expected to respond militarily to the attack on tourists in Kashmir last month by militants which it has said were from Pakistani group Lakshar-e-Taiba, a UN-designated terrorist organisation.

The assault left 26 people dead.

New Delhi has blamed Islamabad for backing the attack, sparking a series of heated threats and diplomatic tit-for-tat measures.

Pakistan rejects the accusations, and the two sides have exchanged nightly gunfire since April 24 along the de facto border in Kashmir, the militarised Line of Control, according to the Indian army.

Wednesday’s missile strikes are a dangerous heightening of friction between the South Asian neighbours, who have fought multiple wars since they were carved out of British colonial India in 1947.

For days the international community has piled pressure on Pakistan and India to step back from the brink of war.

“We continue to urge Pakistan and India to work towards a responsible resolution that maintains long-term peace and regional stability in South Asia,” US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce told reporters on Tuesday, hours before the strikes.

  • Insurgency –
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said India will “identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backer” who carried out the attack at Pahalgam in Kashmir last month.

Indian police have issued wanted posters for three suspects — two Pakistanis and an Indian — who they say belong to Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The Pakistani military has said it has launched two missile tests in recent days, including of a surface-to-surface missile with a range of 450 kilometres (280 miles) — about the distance from the Pakistan border to New Delhi.

India is set to hold several civil defence drills Wednesday preparing people to “protect themselves in the event of a hostile attack”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected in New Delhi on Wednesday, two days after talks in Islamabad with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Tehran has offered to mediate between the two nations, and Araghchi will be first senior foreign diplomat to visit both countries since the April 22 attack sent relations plunging.

Rebels in Indian-run Kashmir have waged an insurgency since 1989, seeking independence or a merger with Pakistan.

India regularly blames its neighbour for backing gunmen behind the insurgency.

  • ‘Act of war’ –
The strikes came just hours after Modi said that water flowing across India’s borders would be stopped. Pakistan had warned that tampering with the rivers that flow from India into its territory would be an “act of war.”
Modi did not mention Islamabad specifically, but his speech came after New Delhi suspended its part of the 65-year-old Indus Waters Treaty, which governs water critical to Pakistan for consumption and agriculture.

“India’s water used to go outside, now it will flow for India,” Modi said in a speech in New Delhi.

Florida Republican quits party

0

After 17 years on the Orlando City Commission representing a majority-Hispanic district, retired police officer and U.S. Marine veteran Tony Ortiz has changed his political party from Republican to Democrat, saying it is not the Republican party he “signed up with.”

Orlando Sentinel reported Tuesday that Ortiz’s decision was prompted by his opposition to GOP positions on issues such as immigration, banning books in schools, and eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. He formally filed the paperwork for this party switch on Monday.

“The Republican party is not the Republican party I signed up with,” he said. Earlier, he had described himself as a “Ronald Reagan Republican,” per the report.

Ortiz’s move from the political right to the left comes against the backdrop of a recent pattern in Florida where elected Democratic officials are leaving the party. For example, last month, the Senate’s leading Democrat, state Sen. Jason Pizzo, quit the party.

Before that, two state representatives elected as Democrats declared they were switching to the Republican party before the legislative session.

According to Otiz, his switch is due to “attacks on Medicaid expansion and the erosion of social safety nets” as well as “political theater used to target the LGBTQ+ community, punish public school teachers and erase inclusive history from classrooms.”

The Sentinel further reported that Ortiz has confirmed reports he is considering running for mayor, but added that his decision to switch parties is not linked to his mayoral aspirations.

Kenya’s cardinal to miss Pope vote because of ill health

Kenya’s cardinal to miss Pope vote because of ill health

By: BBC Africa

The Catholic Church in Kenya has responded to concerns that the country’s only cardinal will not be participating in the election of the next pope because he had not been asked to attend.

Following Pope Francis’ death last month, senior Catholic leaders, known as cardinals, who are younger than 80, are eligible to elect his successor.

They are due to begin meeting in the Vatican on Wednesday, but Kenyan Cardinal John Njue, 79, was quoted in a Kenyan newspaper saying that he had not been invited and he did not know why.
Catholic officials in Kenya later said that he had been invited but was not able to go because of ill health.

Columbia University to lay off some 180 researchers amid Trump squeeze

Columbia University said Tuesday it was laying off around 180 researchers amid a funding squeeze prompted by President Donald Trump’s move to strip the Ivy League institution of $400 million.

Trump targeted Columbia as part of his campaign against elite US universities he claims are hotbeds of anti-Semitic and anti-American sentiment, stripping them of funds and targeting their foreign students in response.

“Across the research portfolio we have had to make difficult choices and unfortunately, today, nearly 180 of our colleagues who have been working, in whole or in part, on impacted federal grants, will receive notices of non-renewal or termination,” said a memo signed by Claire Shipman, Columbia’s acting president.

“This represents about 20 percent of the individuals who are funded in some manner by the terminated grants.” The update did not specify which research projects would be affected.

Columbia said it would seek to continue engaging with the federal government to press for the reinstatement of the funds.

Along with Columbia, Trump has focused his ire on Harvard, where he has already frozen $2.2 billion in grants.

Trump had demanded that Columbia accept external oversight, but the school stopped short of that with measures it announced to placate Trump in March.

Trump is on a fierce offensive against many major US institutions, attacking not just academia but also the news media, big law firms, the courts and other centers of American power as he issues executive orders to an unprecedented extent. His goal is to bring to heel institutions he sees as too liberal, or “woke.”

Columbia’s student movement has been at the forefront of protests that have exposed deep rifts over the Gaza war.

Activists call them a show of support for the Palestinian people, while Trump condemns them as anti-Semitic, and says they must end.

The president cut $400 million in federal funding for Columbia — including research grants and other contracts — on the grounds that the institution had not adequately protected Jewish students from harassment.

Besides cuts to Columbia’s federal funds, with more threatened, immigration officers targeted a leader of the campus pro-Palestinian protests, Mahmoud Khalil.

Khalil, a US permanent resident with Palestinian roots and a graduate student at Columbia, was arrested by officers and has been held in Louisiana as he and his supporters fight the administration’s attempt to deport him on grounds he is hindering US foreign policy.

Zimbabwe war vets launch impeachment drive

A major political storm is sweeping through Zimbabwe’s corridors of power as a group of war veterans led by outspoken activist Blessed Geza has initiated an impeachment campaign targeting senior government officials accused of orchestrating a US$1.9 billion corruption scandal involving the controversial overvaluation of Kuvimba Mining House.

In what is being described as an unprecedented act of defiance from a faction once loyal to the ruling party, the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association has formally accused six high-profile officials of conspiring to fraudulently inflate Kuvimba’s value – creating a conduit for the looting of state funds.

Those named in the impeachment petition include businessman Kuda Tagwirei, CBZ Holdings chairperson Simbarashe Chinyemba, attorney Varaidzo Zifudzi, former Reserve Bank governor John Mangudya, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube, and Finance Ministry Secretary George Guvamatanga.

According to documents released by the association, the six allegedly collaborated to overvalue Kuvimba Mining House from US$1.5 billion in 2023 to US$5.4 billion in 2024, using CBZ Capital – a firm with conflicts of interest tied to the accused. This manipulation reportedly facilitated the payment of US$1.9 billion from the national treasury to acquire a 35% stake in Kuvimba, via a shadowy entity known as Pfimbi Resources, which the war veterans claim is connected to the First Family.

Speaking at a packed press conference in Harare, Geza minced no words:
“We cannot sit back while the legacy we fought for is looted by a corrupt elite. This is no longer just a criminal matter – it is a national betrayal. We are demanding accountability through constitutional means, starting with the impeachment of all those involved.”

The veterans allege that the roots of the scandal stretch back to the controversial Command Agriculture programme, under which military-linked assets such as Great Dyke Investments were unlawfully stripped from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces in 2019 at below-market prices. They claim the acquisitions were enabled through collusion, bribery, and political cover from the highest offices in government.

In a damning accusation, the group also named President Emmerson Mnangagwa as complicit in the scheme, asserting that the fraud could not have occurred without his knowledge and protection.

The war veterans have now called on Parliament to swiftly initiate impeachment proceedings against the named officials for “gross abuse of public trust, economic sabotage, and enabling grand-scale corruption.”

The petition has begun to gain traction among civil society organisations and opposition leaders, signaling a rare convergence of interests between political reformists and liberation war fighters – long considered pillars of the ruling establishment.

If Parliament acts on the motion, it could mark a watershed moment in Zimbabwe’s political landscape, testing the strength of democratic accountability in a nation long plagued by elite impunity and governance scandals.

“We Can Did It Too”: Zimbabweans React After Govt Official Suggests Copying Tanzania and Banning US Dollar

“We Can Did It Too”: Zimbabweans React After Govt Official Suggests Copying Tanzania and Banning the US Dollar

Zimbabweans are once again on edge after President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson, George Charamba, suggested the country could follow in Tanzania’s footsteps and ban the use of the US dollar.

Tanzania Bans the US Dollar
On 2 May, Tanzania officially outlawed the use of foreign currencies like the dollar and euro for buying goods and services within the country. All local transactions must now be done in Tanzanian shillings. The regulation, which came into effect on 28 March, also prohibits businesses from quoting or advertising prices in foreign currency or refusing to accept the local currency.

Reacting to the news, Charamba posted a message on his X account (@Jamwanda2) on 6 May, sharing the Bank of Tanzania’s statement and jokingly wrote:

“IF TANZANIA DID IT, WE CAN DID IT TOO!!!!!!

Reactions as Govt Official Suggests Copying Tanzania
His post sparked a flurry of reactions, with many Zimbabweans divided on whether such a move would work in their country.

Here are some of the reactions:

@njabulochitsiko:

That would be in contrast to public assurances by GoZ that Forex will be legal tender up to at least 2030, and also goes against current RBZ MPC plans to gradually improve the ZWG standing as a base currency for local transactions

@Washing96808543:

That will be a good start. We need our own currency

@BobbyDNdhlovu:

You obviously don’t understand what gives money value. You can never rig a currency

@TendayiManyange:

It won’t happen akoma bcoz there’re powerful politicians and their business accomplices benefiting from the suffering the USD is causing in society. We have been advocating for the removal of USD from domestic transactions but they won’t listen. It will not happen

@SiqokoqelaMpho2:

This would work big time. All the systems are already in place all it needs is implementation. Wealth and savings can only be achieved through Zimbabwe promoting it own currency.

Upgrade or downgrade? Black Coffee’s new girlfriend divides fans

Black Coffee’s pictures with his new girlfriend and Enhle Mbali divided fans on Twitter. His past relationship with actress Enhle Mbali was once the talk of Mzansi. Their union, which started with a fairytale wedding, sadly ended in a highly publicised divorce.

Fans closely followed their journey, admiring their stylish red carpet appearances and love for family. Even after the split, Enhle remained a strong and admired figure in the entertainment industry.

Black Coffee, a global music icon, kept his love life low-key for a while. Now, fans are buzzing again—this time, about his new romance.

Photos of him with Victoria Gonzalez have sparked debates online. On Twitter, one user compared Enhle and Victoria, asking if Black Coffee “upgraded or downgraded.”

The post went viral, with many people quickly jumping into the debate. Once again, Black Coffee’s love life is trending for all to see.

Black Coffee’s new girlfriend divides fans
Victoria Gonzalez, Black Coffee’s current flame, is undeniably stunning with an international charm. On the other hand, Enhle Mbali boasts natural elegance and timeless South African beauty.

Fans couldn’t resist comparing their looks, flooding timelines with hot takes and photos. Some praised Victoria’s chic European style. Others stood firm for Enhle’s African glow.

However, beauty is subjective and lies in the eye of the beholder. While the debate raged, others reminded fans of what truly matters—happiness.

Enhle seems focused on motherhood and her career. Black Coffee appears content and glowing with Victoria. No one truly knows what happens behind closed doors.

What matters is emotional peace, not public opinion. Twitter may ask if he upgraded, but love isn’t a competition. Each woman brings something special and unique to the table.

In the end, all three deserve peace, love, and joy. Let’s celebrate love instead of comparing women.

Fans divided

After @Buhlenomuhle shared pictures of Black Coffee’s new girlfriend and compared her beauty with Enhle Mbali, they divided fans. “Black Coffee with old girlfriend and new girlfriend! Upgrade or downgrade??” they said.

Fans came in numbers giving their opinion about Black Coffee’s love life.

@ScottNgiphile “She is in for money meanwhile the first one he hustled for it with her in the picture. Sad”

@MthunziLKDwanya “Impossible to tell, the inside will always out perform the outside particularly when you create and build – nothing that can ever be told from photographs. You have to be in it to tell ”

@Dr15_Odds “Obviously a downgrade. A woman that has given a man children is more valuable than a girlfriend that is yet to bear a child. By the look of things it doesn’t look like he’s going to succeed in getting her to give him babies.”

Trump administration offers unauthorized immigrants $1,000 to leave the country

The Trump administration has announced a new initiative offering $1,000 in financial assistance and travel support to undocumented migrants who choose to voluntarily leave the United States, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

In a statement, DHS described self-deportation as “the best, safest, and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest.” The program is being facilitated through the CBP One mobile application.

“If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest. DHS is now offering financial travel assistance and a stipend to support voluntary return through the CBP Home App,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Immigration enforcement remains a key focus of Donald Trump’s presidency and re-election campaign. However, officials acknowledge that deportations are expensive. DHS estimates the cost of arresting, detaining, and deporting a person without legal status at approximately $17,000.

The agency noted that the new stipend program costs significantly less and has already been used. “An individual who entered the country under the Biden administration recently took advantage of the initiative to return to Honduras on a flight from Chicago,” DHS reported. “Additional flights are scheduled in the coming weeks.”

Since Trump returned to office on January 20, his administration has deported approximately 152,000 people. That figure is lower than the 195,000 deportations recorded from February to April last year under the Biden administration.

Michelle Obama admits she’s in therapy

Former US first lady, Michelle Obama, has disclosed she’s in therapy and it’s helping her transition to what she thinks is going to be the ‘next phase’ of her life.

She revealed this on The Jay Shetty Podcast, where she was a guest alongside her brother, Craig Robinson.

During her interviews, she’s attempted to squash long-running rumors that she and her husband, former President Barack Obama, are divorcing.

Michelle discussed being an ’empty nester’ and admitting to getting ‘some help’ as she heads into her 60s.

‘At this phase of my life, I’m in therapy right now because I’m transitioning, you know? I’m 60 years old, I’ve finished a really hard thing in my life with my family intact, I’m an empty nester, my girls are in—you know, they’ve been launched,’ she said.

Michelle said that she’s got ‘other voices’ to talk to and a ‘new person that’s getting to know me’ as she works through things.

Being out of public service, she now finds herself in a situation where ‘every choice that I’m making is completely mine.’

‘I now don’t have the excuse of, “Well, my kids need this” or “My husband needs that” or “The country needs that.”‘

She says that therapy is a ‘tune-up for this next phase’ in an attempt to ‘unwind some old habits and ‘sort through some old guilt,’ along with focusing on her relationship with her mother.

‘So, I’m getting that tune-up for this next phase because I believe this is a whole ‘nother phase in life for me. And I now have the wisdom to know—let me go get some coaching while I’m doing it,’ she said.

Michelle encouraged anyone who needs mental health services to try and get access to a therapist.

‘I am an advocate of it. Everybody needs to find their form of it, the best way they can,’ she said.

Last week, Michelle set the record straight after speculation over the former first couple’s recent public appearances during a podcast with entrepreneur and investor Steven Bartlett.

‘If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it,’ she said, laughing.
