Zambia’s Digital Finance Surges as Mobile Money Transactions Top K100 Billion in March

Zambia’s Digital Finance Surges as Mobile Money Transactions Top K100 Billion in March
……………….Historic milestone signals accelerated adoption of cashless platforms and strengthens fintech’s role in the national economy.

Zambia’s mobile money sector has reached an unprecedented milestone, with transactions exceeding K100 billion in March 2025 alone the highest monthly figure ever recorded, according to data released by the Bank of Zambia (BoZ).

The development marks a pivotal moment for the country’s digital financial ecosystem, reflecting the accelerated shift toward cashless, technology-driven financial services. Industry analysts attribute the surge to a combination of increased smartphone penetration, growing trust in digital platforms, and the expanding footprint of fintech solutions across urban and rural areas.

“This milestone is a clear indicator of Zambia’s digital transformation trajectory. It shows the public’s growing confidence in mobile money platforms for conducting everyday transactions,” said a fintech expert from the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA).

Mobile money has become a cornerstone of financial inclusion, especially for underbanked populations. From market vendors to SMEs and salaried professionals, users are leveraging mobile platforms for peer-to-peer transfers, utility payments, airtime purchases, merchant services, and even micro-loans.

Financial technology firms and mobile network operators have responded to the growing demand by diversifying their service offerings, enhancing user interfaces, and strengthening transaction security protocols. The sector’s growth is also being supported by government policies aimed at promoting digital finance and reducing reliance on physical cash.

Analysts forecast continued upward momentum, with projections indicating mobile money could surpass K1 trillion in cumulative transactions by the end of 2025, if the current trend holds.

As Zambia continues to position itself as a regional leader in digital finance, stakeholders anticipate heightened investment in fintech infrastructure, cross-sector digital partnerships, and broader efforts to bridge the digital divide.

LAUNCH OF THE MEDICAL OXYGEN CURRICULUM

LAUNCH OF THE MEDICAL OXYGEN CURRICULUM

This morning, the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, officially launched the Medical Oxygen Management and Maintenance Curriculum on behalf of the Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix C. Mutati.

This milestone marks a significant step in responding to the increasing demand for oxygen therapy, especially in managing conditions such as pneumonia, asthma, trauma, surgical procedures, and pandemics.

The newly launched curriculum is a testament to the relevance of Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training (TEVET) in addressing real-world challenges and empowering youth with practical skills for job creation and socio-economic development.

Through collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Health, PATH, and TEVETA, this specialized curriculum addresses gaps in the training of personnel in the installation, maintenance, and servicing of medical oxygen systems in health facilities. It equips healthcare workers with the skills needed to manage oxygen concentrators, PSA plants, gas pipelines, ventilators, and more.

Hon. Mutati emphasized that this initiative supports Zambia’s Vision 2030 goal of becoming a prosperous middle-income country by aligning skills training with national health and development needs.

We commend all stakeholders involved in this groundbreaking initiative and invite more partners to support efforts aimed at strengthening Zambia’s public health systems and enhancing emergency preparedness.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA SHOULD DEPOLITICIZE THE CIVIL SERVICE- Socialist Party

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA SHOULD DEPOLITICIZE THE CIVIL SERVICE

Lusaka, Tuesday- 29th April, 2025.

The Civil service is expected to be driven by informed professional decisions, these decisions are made by persons who are qualified in different areas. These professionals are expected to put the interest of the nation first in all they do.

The current administration under Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, promised that the civil service will be allowed to operate without politicizing it. Today, the case is difference.

Mr. Patrick Kangwa, Secretary to cabinet recently, sounded a warning to civil servants involved in politics to resign from the civil service, adding that the two, do not mix. This happened following several reported cases of district commissioners, permanent secretaries and other senior civil servants found actively politicking in favor of the Upnd.

He said drawing  government salary but hustling for their party on the side, is robbing the people of Zambia.

“You can’t eat from two pots!” That’s the hard truth from Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa, who has thrown down the gauntlet to civil servants moonlighting in politics—especially District Commissioners.

He said this at the First Senior Public Service Management Meeting of 2025. Mr. Kangwa didn’t mince his words. He warned that any government worker caught using public time and resources for political campaigns will face disciplinary action.

District Commissioners were singled out for skipping work in favour of party politics. Mr. Kangwa was clear: “If you want to be a politician, resign and join the fray like everyone else.”

We agree with the Secretary to the Cabinet. The Socialist Party has been speaking about this issue on several occasions.

During the Dilika ward by elections, Malan Zimba, a District Commissioner led a group UPND thugs during the campaigns and attacked us in magwero.
President Hichilema should learn from his Secretary to the Cabinet and stop this politicization of the civil service. It is Mr. Hichilema who is to blame. He publicly endorsed this!

We challenge government to state facts here. Our sources have informed us that DCs have been mobilized to go and roll out cash for work and social cash transfer in Lumezi Constituency ahead of the 26th June, 2025 by elections.

We challenge government to give the nation clarity if this is true or not. If this is true, we call on Secretary to Cabinet to act immediately, this amounts to corruption and looting.

LUMEZI TOWN COUNCIL SECRETARY CITE’S ABSENCE OF CBD AS A BARRIER TO DEVELOPMENT

Lumezi Town Council Secretary Mary Sinkala says the absence of a Central Business District (CBD) is hindering development in the area.

Ms. Sinkala said traditional leaders have since been engaged to help ensure that the district is allocated land for a CBD.

She said this when Eastern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Lewis Mwape addressed civil servants before touring Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mwape stated that the issue is receiving active attention from the government.

He also appealed to traditional leaders to be more receptive to the need for national development.

JOHNSON BALANCES WORLD CUP DREAM WITH FINAL EXAMS

JOHNSON BALANCES WORLD CUP DREAM WITH FINAL EXAMS

FAZ MEDIA

Zambia midfielder Jessica Choolwe Johnson has shared her experience of balancing two dreams involving leading the Copper Princesses to the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2025 and preparing for her final exams in May, next month.

The 15-year-old featured in four qualifying matches leading to Zambia’s back-to-back World Cup appearances, but is also high on preparations for her final exams at Kibworth Mead Academy in Leicester, United Kingdom.

Despite the demands of international football, Johnson told FAZ Media how she was juggling textbooks and training sessions in the middle of crucial home and away FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifier matches against Tanzania and Benin.

“It hasn’t been easy, but I am committed to doing well in both football and my studies. I know education is just as important as my football career and I am grateful to have the support of my family, my school, club and the coaches in Zambia to pursue both my dreams,” the Aston Villa youth midfielder told FAZ Media.

“Because my exams are next month, I brought my study books with me and always try to find time to go through my books. Right now, it’s about managing my time and staying focused. Football has taught me discipline, and I am applying that to my studies too.”

Johnson also shared her excitement of being part of a ‘special group of coaches and players to have led Zambia to historic qualification’ to the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup to be held in Morocco later this year.

“It’s a huge honour to help Zambia qualify again. Wearing the Copper Princesses’ national jersey means everything to me. I want to play at the highest level, but I also want to have a strong education behind me because I believe you can have both,” Johnson said.

Copper Princesses captain Mercy Chipasula praised Johnson’s willingness to adapt in the team at short notice.

“Jessica inspires all of us. She’s always focused, always asking questions and always improving. She proves that with the right mindset, you can chase more than one dream at the same time,” Chipasula said.

Katuba Resident Backs Women’s Village Banking with Financial Pledge

Katuba Resident Backs Women’s Village Banking with Financial Pledge

In a move expected to inject fresh momentum into grassroots financial inclusion, Chooma Mwachikoka, a notable resident and entrepreneur in Katuba Constituency, has pledged ongoing financial contributions to women-led village banking cooperatives in the area.

Mr. Mwachikoka made the announcement during the handover of certificates to 25 women’s cooperatives recently recognized for their active participation in village banking. He stated that he will personally top up savings during each cooperative’s end-of-cycle cash-out process, with the goal of amplifying the impact of these community-based savings and lending schemes.

“Village banking has proven to be a vital tool for financial independence among women,” Mwachikoka said. “By committing to these top-ups, I hope to strengthen their financial base and encourage more women to participate in cooperative savings models.”

Village banking, a form of informal financial service built on group savings and micro-lending, has gained popularity in rural Zambia as a means of fostering entrepreneurship and resilience among women.

The initiative comes at a time when the government is scaling up access to economic empowerment programs through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC).

Mwachikoka urged women in Katuba to formalize their cooperatives to better access public and private sector funding, highlighting the government’s commitment to gender-responsive economic initiatives under the UPND administration.

Local observers say the pledge could provide a model for public-private synergy in rural economic development. Analysts note that such interventions though small in scale can significantly enhance capital liquidity for women entrepreneurs operating in low-income settings.

The certificate handover event also spotlighted the growing momentum of women’s cooperatives in Katuba, as community-led financial solutions continue to bridge the gap left by limited formal banking infrastructure.

Missing officers found dead in Gauteng river

A cloud of grief hangs over South Africa following the grim discovery of five bodies in the Hennops River in Centurion.

Among them, three have been confirmed as the missing young South African Police Service (SAPS) Constables Cebekhulu Linda (24), Keamogetswe Buys (30), and Boipelo Senoge (20), who disappeared on April 23 while en route to their deployment in Limpopo.

The constables were last seen refueling at an Engen garage near the Grasmere toll plaza. Traveling in a Volkswagen Polo hatchback from Bloemfontein, they failed to reach their destination, sparking a widespread search and a R350,000 reward offer from SAPS for any information.

After days of intensive operations, SAPS’s search and rescue team recovered five bodies from the Hennops River, near the N1 highway. Three were identified by their families as the missing officers. The remaining two bodies, including a female, remain unidentified pending forensic confirmation.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola addressed the nation with the somber news, vowing to uncover the truth. “We are heartbroken to confirm that three of the bodies are those of our missing officers. We will not rest until justice is served,” he stated.

The investigation, still ongoing, is exploring potential links to hijacking and kidnapping. Security experts have warned against speculation, while SAPS continues to gather evidence, including the whereabouts of the missing vehicle.

The tragedy has stirred national mourning, with an outpouring of grief and tributes on social media.

As forensic teams work to determine the cause of death and identify the other two bodies, SAPS urges anyone with information to come forward. The nation remains united in mourning and in its call for answers.

ZAF raises over K300 million from Kingsland City housing project!

Zambia Air Force has generated more than K300 million from the sale of houses in the Kingsland City housing development project in Lusaka. The revenue comes from the sale of 116 homes out of a total of 400 constructed under the Public Private Partnership model.

Brigadier General John Mulenga, Chairman of the ZAF Projects Limited Board confirmed that title deeds are being issued to buyers who have completed their payments. He made the remarks during an official tour of Kingsland City led by Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma, Lands Minister Sylvia Masebo and Green Economy and Environment Minister Mike Mposha.

NAQEZ PROPOSES NATIONWIDE STRIKE OVER UNFULFILLED TEACHER UPGRADES

NAQEZ PROPOSES NATIONWIDE STRIKE OVER UNFULFILLED TEACHER UPGRADES

The National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) is left with no option but to propose a nationwide industrial strike in response to the government’s continued failure to fulfill its solemn promise of upgrading all deserving teachers to higher salary scales.

In the last three years, the Republican President, the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Education have made repeated public assurances that over 40,000 teachers would be moved into appropriate salary brackets. Yet today, those promises remain unfulfilled  –  leaving teachers disheartened, disrespected and demoralised.

This betrayal has far-reaching consequences. It is not only a slap in the face of our dedicated educators but a serious threat to the quality of education in Zambia. When teachers are denied their due, learners suffer and the entire nation is pushed backward.

In the week that ended yesterday, Republican President Hakainde Hichilema reminded the nation by saying, “Education is number one … Without education, the country is dead.” We fully agree with this profound truth, but if education is indeed the lifeline of the nation, then its heartbeat  –  the teacher  –  must not be suffocated by injustice and neglect.

NAQEZ, like teacher unions and other stakeholders, has made every effort to engage Government through dialogue, but these efforts have been met with silence and inaction. It is now evident that only firm, coordinated industrial action can compell the government to act.

We, therefore, call upon all teacher unions to begin mobilising their members in accordance with Sections 76, 77 and 78 of the Industrial and Labour Relations Act. The time for patience has expired. The time for action is now.

Teachers have been stretched to their breaking point. They have been used, ignored and denied justice for far too long. Their sacrifices are the backbone of Zambia’s development  –  they deserve more than empty promises.

While NAQEZ understands the implications of a national strike, we believe that such action is now inevitable and indeed necessary, if justice is to be delivered to our hardworking teachers.

Enough is enough. No teacher must be left behind.

KAWANA DEFENDS HH’s LEADERSHIP AMID OPPOSITION CRITICISM

KAWANA DEFENDS HH’s LEADERSHIP AMID OPPOSITION CRITICISM

Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana, has expressed disappointment over claims by opposition political parties that President Hakainde Hichilema is “working hard doing the wrong things.”

Mr. Kawana said in an interview in Livingstone that such claims are unsurprising, as the opposition is accustomed to doing the wrong things to the extent that when someone does the right thing, they perceive it as wrong.

He stated that, contrary to these claims, President Hichilema is working diligently to correct past wrongs and restructure the debt accumulated by the previous regime.

Mr. Kawana said that  to ensure all Zambians benefit from the national resources, President Hichilema reintroduced free education and reinstated meal allowances for university students.

He further noted that, due to President Hichilema’s efforts, the country’s economy, which was previously in decline under the Patriotic Front (PF) government, is now experiencing positive growth.

Mr. Kawana advised opposition political parties to learn from President Hichilema’s hard work, emphasizing that the era of embezzling public funds is over.

He assured Zambians that the country is on a path to greatness under President Hichilema’s leadership and dedication.

Is the Deregistration of NAQEZ Legally Justified or a Threat to Civil Society? Did NAQEZ Act Ultra Vires?

Is the Deregistration of NAQEZ Legally Justified or a Threat to Civil Society? Did NAQEZ Act Ultra Vires?

By Joe Prince Makungu – The VOICE

The Government has NOT publicly provided a detailed LEGAL JUSTIFICATION for the recent deregistration NOTICE issued to the National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ). Consequently, the LEGALITY of this move remains a matter of SPECULATION and growing concern within legal, academic and civil society circles.

Did NAQEZ Act Ultra Vires?

The term ULTRA VIRES refers to actions taken BEYOND the jurisdiction or legal powers/ authority granted to an organization by its constitution, laws or governing statutes.

At present, there is no publicly available evidence suggesting that NAQEZ acted ultra vires. The organization seemed to have been operating within its established mandate of ADVOCACY for quality education, policy dialogue and representation of educators’ interests.

Its recent call for a nationwide teachers’ STRIKE, though controversial, arguably falls WITHIN the legitimate scope of civil society’s rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly, as enshrined pursuant to Articles 20 and 21 of the Zambian Constitution and in accordance with Zambia’s obligations under international human rights instruments.

Furthermore, Article 118(2)(e) of the Zambian Constitution mandates all authorities to promote alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, implying that deregistration should only be used as a LAST resort, not the first step.

Unless the government can clearly DEMONSTRATE that NAQEZ violated provisions of the NGO Act, breached its own constitution, or engaged in prohibited activities such as inciting violence or participating in PARTISAN politics, any claim that NAQEZ acted ULTRA VIRES remains legally unsubstantiated.

CRITICISM of government policy or peaceful mobilization of professional stakeholders does NOT in itself constitute reasonable grounds for deregistration.

LEGAL CONCERNS AND DUE PROCESS OF LAW

The primary concern is the apparent lack of DUE PROCESS in the deregistration action. Even if the government believes NAQEZ VIOLATED legal provisions, it remains bound by constitutional and administrative law principles to:

☑️Clearly inform the organization of any alleged violations;
☑️Offer an opportunity for the organization to be heard through a fair and impartial process;
☑️Provide written reasons for its decision;
☑️Allow for an appeal or judicial review.

FAILURE to observe these procedural steps raises the risk of arbitrary administrative action, which could be CHALLENGED in the courts as unconstitutional.

CONCLUSION

In the ABSENCE of official documentation outlining the legal grounds for deregistration, the government’s action against NAQEZ appears legally QUESTIONABLE. There is no public indication that the organization acted OUTSIDE its legal mandate. On the contrary, the LACK of transparency and DISREGARD for due process of law could be viewed as ULTRA VIRES on the part of the regulatory authorities themselves.

The IMPLICATIONS are serious. This move may send a chilling MESSAGE to other CIVIL SOCIETY organizations that SPEAKING OUT against government policy, even lawfully — could result in PUNITIVE action. Such a precedent undermines Zambia’s stated commitments to democratic governance, transparency and FREEDOM of expression.

As the situation evolves, attention now turns to the government’s NEXT steps. Will it provide a credible LEGAL BASIS for deregistration? Will NAQEZ seek legal redress? And will civil society, regional bodies and international observers rally to DEFEND the rule of law and constitutional freedoms?

Ultimately, how NAQEZ is treated will serve as a LITMUS TEST for Zambia’s commitment to DEMOCRATIC values. In a functioning democracy, the VOICE of CIVIL SOCIETY is not a threat, but a necessary force for progress.

UPND Government Reaffirms Commitment to Energy Mix and Sustainability Amid Power Challenges

UPND Government Reaffirms Commitment to Energy Mix and Sustainability Amid Power Challenges

Lusaka, Zambia – April 29, 2025 — The United Party for National Development (UPND) government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to energy diversification and sustainability, as the nation continues to face critical power supply challenges.

Speaking during a media briefing at Anderson Kambela Mazoka Party Secretariat, UPND Chairman for Energy and ZESCO Board Chairperson, Eng. Charles Kaisala, said that the current sector efforts align with the party’s manifesto to provide a stable and eco-friendly energy system.

ZESCO has also launched a hybrid three-tier generation model to inject 270 megawatts into the grid through a mix of utility-funded and micro-generation projects, with ongoing diversification at Kariba and Kafue Gorge including coal power initiatives.

Eng. Kaisala says infrastructure upgrades are also a priority, with key interconnectors being revamped to enhance Zambia’s regional energy trade potential. These include the Tanzania-Zambia interconnector with World Bank support, as well as enhanced connectivity to Angola, the DRC, Zimbabwe, and Malawi—positioning Zambia as a regional energy hub.

He said despite these developments, ZESCO continues to face financial headwinds, including over $800 million in legacy debt, largely owed by state-owned enterprises such as Konkola Copper Mines (KCM).

Eng. Kaisala, however, said to address this, the government is considering debt-to-equity swaps and restructuring agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

He further stressed the need for cost-reflective tariffs to ensure sector sustainability and attract further private investment. However, he assured the public that tariff reforms would be implemented with sensitivity to protect vulnerable households and ensure equitable access to power.

Eng. Kaisala said the UPND government remains resolute in its ambition to create an energy-secure, self-reliant Zambia through renewable expansion, infrastructure modernization, financial reform, and enhanced regional integration, the administration aims to eliminate load shedding and transform Zambia into a reliable net energy exporter within the region.

He noted that the electricity sub-sector remains a key pillar of Zambia’s development, but acknowledged that the country has been grappling with reduced power generation due to prolonged drought conditions.

“With approximately 84% of electricity sourced from hydropower, the country remains vulnerable to rainfall variability affecting water reservoirs such as the Kariba Dam and Kafue Gorge,” Eng. Kaisala said.

He said to mitigate the electricity deficit, which has seen the country producing 330 megawatts against a national demand of 1,330 megawatts, the government had been spending about $60 million monthly on imports.

However, Eng. Kaisala said this cost has been cut to around $20 million due to better planning and alternative sourcing, primarily from Mozambique, saving Zambia nearly $45 million each month.

He said the government has adopted a prudent water usage strategy alongside accelerated investment in renewable energy due to limited water reserves that could only sustain maximum production for two months.

Eng. Kaisala further highlighted current initiatives that have brought an additional 105 megawatts from projects in Ndola and other regions, while rooftop solar systems and hospital solarization programs are being rolled out under the Presidential Solar Initiative.

Luapula Province has been earmarked as a strategic region for energy expansion, with plans to develop green cities backed by a $45 million clean energy investment.

PRESIDENT HARRY KALABA’S SUCCESSFUL VISIT TO THE COPPERBELT PROVINCE, A BOOST FOR THE GROWTH OF CITIZENS FIRST

PRESIDENT HARRY KALABA’S SUCCESSFUL VISIT TO THE COPPERBELT PROVINCE, A BOOST FOR THE GROWTH OF CITIZENS FIRST

The Copperbelt Province witnessed a major milestone for the growth and consolidation of the Citizens First (CF) Party as President Harry Kalaba undertook a highly successful working visit from Saturday, 26th April to Monday, 28th April 2025.

His visit, packed with strategic engagements, re-energized the party’s structures and inspired confidence among the grassroots and leadership alike.

President Kalaba’s trip was crowned by a momentous occasion on Monday, 28th April — a significant day in Zambia’s history — when he officially welcomed Mr. Misheck Mwewa, the UPND Lufwanyama District Presidential Campaign Coordinator, into the ranks of Citizens First.

The welcoming ceremony was held at St Mary’s Mission Catholic Hall in Kabundya Ward, Lufwanyama District, and marked a major step forward in strengthening CF’s presence and momentum in rural Copperbelt.

Prior to the Lufwanyama event, President Kalaba was in Kitwe on Saturday, where he attended a wedding ceremony for the son of our National Chairlady, Madam Faith Munthali. His presence at this family occasion reflected the party’s spirit of unity and solidarity.

On Sunday, President Kalaba featured live on Radio Chimwemwe, accompanied by Deputy National Chairman John Mulenga and National Mobilization Chairman Henry Chilombo.

During the program, they discussed important national and regional issues affecting the Copperbelt and Zambia at large, further demonstrating CF’s commitment to addressing the real concerns of our citizens.

Earlier in the day, the President attended two church services — first at Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Luanshya and later at Chifubu Parish in Ndola — reaffirming the party’s connection to the spiritual and moral fabric of the nation.

We wish to highly commend all Copperbelt-based Members of the Central Committee and party structures for their unwavering commitment to the revolutionary struggle for a better Zambia.

Your dedication and sacrifice continue to drive the Citizens First vision forward.

The success of this Copperbelt visit is a clear testament that Citizens First is not just growing — it is solidifying its place as the hope of the Zambian people.

WORLD IS READY FOR A BLACK POPE– GHANAIAN BISHOPS

WORLD IS READY FOR A BLACK POPE– GHANAIAN BISHOPS

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra held a Requiem Mass at the Holy Spirit Cathedral on Friday to honour the late Pope Francis, uniting clergy, religious leaders, and faithful in prayer for the departed pontiff.

Footage shows clergy, religious leaders, and members of the Catholic community gathering to pay their respects and offer prayers for the repose of the late pontiff’s soul.

The Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, praised the late Pope’s humility.
“You chose the name Francis, not for grandeur, but for mission — the pledge to rebuild Christ’s church through simplicity, solidarity with the poor, and reverence for creation,” he noted. “The world mourns, African bishops, Bosnian Muslims, climate scientists, street children, indeed, all Catholics, each saying, thank you Francis for showing us that the gospel is not primarily a rule book, but a story of divine love. Francis, sail on, good shepherd.”

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described Pope Francis as a ‘unifier’ and ‘compassionate leader’.

“President John Mahama also wishes to establish on behalf of the government and people of Ghana that we consider the passing of the Pope as the passing of a champion for Africa. He was a chief advocate for the continent,” he explained.

Bishop Joseph Kwaku Afrifah-Agyekum of Koforidua highlighted the Pope’s unifying role and environmental stewardship, calling him “a simple man who lived a life of humility” and noting that his leadership set an example for all pastors.

Following the moving addresses, the Most Reverend Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi shared his thoughts on his friend and compatriot Cardinal Peter Turkson, a potential papal contender who could make history as the first African Pope.

“He taught me scripture for many years when he was made a bishop, and I was made a bishop, he was then the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, a position that I now hold,” he explained. “He taught me the ABCs of what to do as a bishop. And we had very, very good relationship.”

Rev. Gyamfi noted that Turkson and the departed pontiff had ‘similar qualities’.

“He is a holy man. He’s very intelligent, he’s sensitive to the needs of other people, and he will go to all extent to help the other person. Very, very wonderful similarities between him and Pope Francis, so I will not be surprised if he’s even found to be a worthy successor by the Cardinals,” he said.

“The Church is ever ready for whomever the Holy Spirit chooses for us,” he said. “The world is ready for a black Pope.”

Pope Francis, the first pontiff from the Global South, passed away on Monday from a stroke and heart failure at the age of 88. It followed a lengthy battle with pneumonia and prolonged hospitalisation earlier this year.

Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires. He became a cardinal under Pope John Paul II in 2001, and succeeded Benedict XVI in 2013. His tenure saw him focus on issues like social justice, climate change, migration and the most marginalised people in society, although he saw some criticism across the spectrum for either not going far enough – or even going too far.

Conclave, the secret vote of cardinals to choose the next pope, will begin next month, with key figures from the Global South – notably in Asia and Africa – believed to be in the running.

Diddy’s high-profile federal trial begins May 5 in New York

Diddy’s high-profile federal trial begins May 5 in New York

The high-profile federal trial of US music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is set to begin on May 5, 2025, at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse in Manhattan.

Jury selection will open the proceedings, with opening statements expected around May 12. A federal judge denied the defense’s request to postpone the trial by two months, keeping the schedule unchanged.

Combs, 55, faces serious federal charges, including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transporting individuals for prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty to all five counts. Prosecutors estimate their case will last about three weeks, while the defense anticipates wrapping up within a week.

Although cameras are barred from federal courtrooms, the trial is expected to attract significant public and media attention due to Combs’ prominence in the entertainment industry.

Bishop T.D. Jakes steps down as Head Pastor of The Potter’s House, passes baton to daughter and son-in-law

T.D. Jakes steps down as Head Pastor of The Potter’s House, passes baton to daughter and son-in-law

Bishop T.D. Jakes, the dynamic founder of The Potter’s House, announced on April 27, 2025, that he is stepping down as senior pastor of the megachurch he founded in 1996.

The transition, scheduled for July 2025, will see his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and son-in-law, Touré Roberts, take over as senior pastors of the 30,000-member congregation.

Jakes, 67, will continue to serve as chairman of the church’s board and as a spiritual advisor, ensuring continuity for the Dallas-based ministry. The decision, described as years in the making, was expedited by a health scare in November 2024, when Jakes suffered a major heart attack during a sermon and underwent emergency surgery. “I didn’t want to leave the church without a clear plan,” Jakes told congregants, stressing the importance of prepared leadership.

Church members expressed mixed emotions. “Bishop Jakes is a legend; no one can replace him,” said longtime member Marla Evans. Others highlighted Sarah Jakes Roberts’ increasing leadership role, especially during her father’s recovery, as evidence of her readiness. “She’s been guiding us with strength and grace,” said Deacon James Carter.

Jakes, a globally renowned preacher and author, is also shifting his focus to new endeavors, including a podcast collaboration with iHeartMedia titled My Next Chapter. Under its new leadership, The Potter’s House aims to uphold its influence as a spiritual cornerstone in the community and beyond.

NO TONSE ALLIANCE MEMBER SHOULD BE REMOVED OR SUSPENDED FROM THEIR POSITIONS, BEFORE FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU RETURNS TO ZAMBIA—DAN PULE

NO TONSE ALLIANCE MEMBER SHOULD BE REMOVED OR SUSPENDED FROM THEIR POSITIONS, BEFORE FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU RETURNS TO ZAMBIA—DAN PULE

A very warm good morning fellow members of the TONSE ALLIANCE Council of Leaders.

In view of the recent ‘family differences’ that have been taking place in the Alliance, largely due to the absence of both the Chairman and myself as Vice Chairman, l had the opportunity to engage the Chairman last evening, and he guided as follows;

1. There should be no attempt to amend the TONSE ALLIANCE Constitution before the Chairman returns to Zambia;
2. No member of the TONSE ALLIANCE should be removed or suspended from their positions, before the Chairman returns to Zambia. Specifically, Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba has not been removed or suspended from his position. His status in the TONSE ALLIANCE remains unchanged;

3. Tonse Alliance should remain united and be focused on our main objective of bringing change to Zambia by winning the 2026 General and Presidential Elections. To demonstrate unity, there should be no parallel communication platforms established, as this may promote factionalism and confusion. Specifically, there should be only one ALLIANCE leadership WhatsApp group And all members of the Council of Leaders must revert to the original WhatsApp group.

4. Lastly, the TONSE ALLIANCE Chairman and 2026 Presidential Candidate and I send our warm wishes to all the members of the TONSE ALLIANCE as well as the general citizenry.

God bless you all, God bless our beloved Zambia, God be with our beloved ECL,  our winning 2026 Presidential Candidate.

SEAN TEMBO  ISSUES FRESH THREATS

Sean Tembo Wrote;

INTERNAL NOTICE

29th April 2025

Good morning Colleagues,

Regrettably, it has come to my attention that there are some elements in the TONSE ALLIANCE Council of Leaders (CoL) who have started drafting a parallel TONSE ALLIANCE Constitution to replace the existing constitution, under the disguise that the TONSE ALLIANCE Chairman, His Excellency Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, has given such instructions.

I wish to confirm that the TONSE ALLIANCE Chairman has not issued any such instructions, and any Colleagues advancing such an agenda of illegally replacing the TONSE ALLIANCE Constitution are merely promoting anarchy within the Alliance, for their own selfish motives.

I am further aware that some of the leaders who are bringing anarchy in the TONSE ALLIANCE have a long history of fanning anarchy in various political parties including MMD and PF.

However, be rest assured that such anarchist behavior shall not be tolerated here in the TONSE ALLIANCE, even if it may have been tolerated in the MMD and PF. Here in the TONSE ALLIANCE, we thrive on discipline and good order.

Kindly be advised accordingly.

Thank you.

Cracks Widen in Tonse Alliance as Leaders Clash Over WhatsApp Groups and Leadership Roles

Cracks Widen in Tonse Alliance as Leaders Clash Over WhatsApp Groups and Leadership Roles

… Zumani Zimba Falls Out of Favor — Fired as Consultant, Locked Out of ECL Page

Fresh divisions have erupted within the Tonse Grand Alliance, exposing the deepening rifts among its leadership, with senior figures expelling each other from internal communication platforms and leadership reshuffles further fueling tensions.

Former President Edgar Lungu Lungu has also removed former State House Special Assistant for Politics, Zumani Zimba, from his role as Tonse Alliance Consultant. In addition, Zimba has been stripped of administrative rights to Lungu’s official Facebook page.

The power struggle has been extended into the Alliance’s internal communications. Acting President Lubinda has instructed Nakacinda to establish a new WhatsApp group for the Council of Presidents (CoP), deliberately excluding Zumani Zimba.

This has triggered immediate backlash, with Sean Tembo issuing a stern warning that joining the new group would be considered an act of “gross indiscipline.”

Tembo, has maintained that all communication should remain on the original WhatsApp platform he administers, and issued an “Internal Notice” demanding that defectors return within 24 hours or face disciplinary measures.

He has stated that the creation of parallel communication platforms undermines unity and contravenes the directives of Alliance Chairman Edgar Lungu.

Internal Notice Excerpt:

“The act of creating parallel platforms and encouraging members to leave the official blog amounts to misconduct and indiscipline… Non-compliance may attract disciplinary action from the Adhoc Disciplinary Committee,” Tembo warned.

Last week, former President Lungu quashed disciplinary actions that had been initiated against faction PF Acting President Given Lubinda and Tonse Alliance Secretary General Raphael Nakacinda.

The charges, brought forward by PeP President and Tonse Alliance Spokesperson Sean Tembo, stemmed from the duo’s controversial meeting with Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M’membe.

Leaked audio recordings has intensified suspicions, capturing two Socialist Party officials discussing Dr. M’membe’s growing influence within the Alliance.

This internal chaos lays bare the fragile state of the Tonse Grand Alliance, which continues to be rocked by internal rivalries and mistrust, even as it prepares for a critical electoral season.

As leadership factions intensify their maneuvers for dominance, the future cohesion of the alliance appears increasingly uncertain.

Sean Tembo has warned anyone joining the new Tonse WhatsApp Group directed by Lubinda as an act of indiscipline

BE ALERT; SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITIES

Last week and in a bold move, to forestall discipline and unity in the Tonse Grand Alliance, President  Edgar Lungu quashed the so called disciplinary processes that were raised against Patriotic Front Acting President, Given Lubinda and Secretary General, Raphael Nakacinda.

The disciplinary  actions were raised by PeP President  and Tonse Alliance Spokesperson, Sean Tembo against the duo for meeting Socialist Party President , Dr. Fred Mmembe.

The duo were accused of plotting against the former President as revealed by details of a leaked audio where two junior officials in the Socialist Party were caught discussing the chances and good prospects of their President in the Alliance.

President Lungu proceeded to appoint Lubinda as Acting President of Tonse Grand Alliance.

President Lungu also removed former State House Special Assistant for Politics, Zumani Zimba as Consultant for Tonse Alliance.

Zumani Zimba was also removed as Adminsitrator for Edgar Lungu’s official Facebook page.

And Lubinda directed Nakacinda as Secretary General of Tonse Grand Alliance to form a new WhatsApp Group for the Council of Presidents (CoP) excluding Zumani Zimba.

This was to secure grip of the Alliance and its internal mechanism.

Now Sean Tembo has warned anyone joining the new WhatsApp Group directed by the Acting President of Tonse as an act of indiscipline.

Sean Tembo has instead directed that all Presidents and officials return to his old WhatsApp groups.

Below is the “Internal Memo” over the WhatsApp Group.

INTERNAL NOTICE

Good evening Colleagues,

I have noted with regret that four (4) members of the Council of Leaders (CoL) have exited this official CoL group in preference for a parallel group that has been established by some unscrupulous and indisciplined members.

I have further noted that there are some members of the CoL who are influencing their colleagues to leave this platform in preference for a parallel platform.

May it be known to all men and women on this platform that the TONSE ALLIANCE Chairman, His Excellency Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, has always emphasized the need for unity and harmony within the TONSE ALLIANCE.

May it be further known to all men and women in the Council of Leaders that the act of creating parallel platforms and encouraging members to leave the official blog to a parallel blog amounts to misconduct and indiscipline.

In the premises above, l wish to direct, as l hereby do, that everyone who has since exited this official group, in preference for a parallel group, must return to this group within 24 hours from issue of this notice.

Any non-compliance to this directive may attract disciplinary action from the Adhoc Disciplinary Committee. Please further note that the TONSE ALLIANCE is a disciplined political movement, and any acts of indiscipline shall receive appropriate reproach and action, in accordance with prevailing statutes.

This notice has been issued in consultation with the TONSE ALLIANCE Chairman.

Thank you.

SOUTHERN PROVINCE ELECTORATE RETHINKING LOYALTY TO UPND

SOUTHERN PROVINCE ELECTORATE RETHINKING LOYALTY TO UPND

Monze… Monday April 28, 2025 – As Zambia edges closer to the pivotal 2026 general elections, fresh political undercurrents are emerging from the UPND’s traditional stronghold in Southern Province.

According to Socialist Party (SP) General Secretary Dr. Cosmas Musumali, the electorate in the region — long considered an unshakable bastion for the ruling party — is growing increasingly disillusioned with their UPND representatives at both parliamentary and local government levels.

In a statement, Dr. Musumali contended that voters from Itezhi Tezhi to Maamba, and from Kalomo to Chirundu, are beginning to voice frustrations against “selfish” and “uncaring” councillors and Members of Parliament.

“The voices are getting louder and louder,” Musumali said, suggesting that the UPND leadership in the region has taken voters for granted since ascending to power in 2021.

Dr. Musumali emphasized that a “quiet, diligent revolutionary work” being undertaken by opposition forces in the province was beginning to bear fruit.

“The UPND vuvuzelas are still dreaming of an ‘unshakeable home ground,’ but a new reality will soon shake and wake them up,” he added, saluting the efforts of Socialist Party leaders in the province.

Southern Province has, in recent past, been the bedrock of UPND support, often delivering overwhelming margins for the party.

However, growing complaints about economic hardships, limited development, and unfulfilled campaign promises have left the ruling party vulnerable — even from within.

Bootlickers Are Incapable of Objective Thought: Dr. Elias Munshya, A Case Study in Hypocrisy- Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

Bootlickers Are Incapable of Objective Thought: Dr. Elias Munshya, A Case Study in Hypocrisy

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

In every society, there are individuals who, when presented with the opportunity for personal advancement, are willing to abandon principle for proximity to power. In contemporary Zambia, few exemplify this betrayal more starkly than Dr. Elias Munshya, a figure who has demonstrated that a bootlicker cannot, and will not, engage in objective discourse.

When positioned outside the corridors of influence, Dr. Munshya was among the most vocal critics of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Bill. He strongly argued that the proposed legislation posed a grave threat to freedom of expression, infringed upon the right to privacy, and opened the door to authoritarian abuse. At that time, he presented himself as a principled advocate for the rights and liberties of ordinary Zambians, warning of the dangers of unchecked state surveillance. His voice resonated with many who feared the erosion of fundamental freedoms.

However, upon his appointment as a diplomat under the UPND government, Dr. Munshya’s stance shifted dramatically. Today, he openly supports the very same law he once vehemently opposed, praising it as a “progressive tool for national stability.” This reversal occurred after the strengthening of the law. He is now in support of the very dangers he previously decried. His transformation from a vocal critic to a steadfast defender of the law is not just surprising; it is indicative of a man who has abandoned any pretense of ideological consistency in exchange for political rewards.

Such a transformation cannot be characterized as growth or evolution based on new information. Rather, it represents a clear case of political expediency and unprincipled self-preservation. It is, in essence, pure and unfiltered bootlicking. The line between conviction and opportunism is so thin in Dr. Munshya’s case that it is all but invisible.

An individual who subordinates principle to personal ambition cannot be engaged in meaningful or objective conversation. Their allegiance is no longer to truth, to justice, or to the public good; it lies solely with those who secure their personal advancement. Objective dialogue requires integrity, consistency, and courage — virtues that those who practice bootlicking inherently lack. To converse with such individuals is futile, as they cannot be trusted to offer honest analysis or insight; they will always parrot whatever narrative benefits their position.

Engaging such individuals is akin to debating a weather vane: their direction is dictated entirely by the prevailing winds of political advantage. They shift without hesitation to accommodate whatever suits their interests in the moment. They are not participants in honest discourse; they are mouthpieces for those in power. In this case, Dr. Munshya has traded the pursuit of truth for the pursuit of comfort and power.

Dr. Elias Munshya’s complete reversal on the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act is not merely a personal failing; it represents a broader warning about the erosion of integrity among those who aspire to public office. When loyalty to truth is replaced by loyalty to political patronage, the entire democratic fabric is placed at risk. This shift from principled opposition to sycophantic support for an oppressive law undermines the very notion of public service. Leaders are supposed to act in the interest of the people, not to secure personal privileges.

Zambia must remain vigilant against individuals who abandon principle at the first opportunity for personal gain. This is not just a cautionary tale about Dr. Munshya, but a reminder for all Zambians: political expediency often trumps the pursuit of justice, and those who promise change can become the architects of their own betrayal. True leadership demands steadfastness, not opportunism. It requires individuals who are willing to stand for what is right, even when it is not politically advantageous.

A free and just society cannot be built on the shifting sands of self-interest. It requires men and women whose convictions withstand the tests of time, circumstance, and political pressure. Those who bend to power at the first opportunity cannot be trusted to uphold the values of democracy and freedom. They will always prioritize their own advancement over the greater good.

Dr. Munshya’s conduct serves as a reminder: those who bend to power will ultimately betray the people when it matters most. His actions stand as a cautionary tale to all who place their own ambitions ahead of their country’s well-being. If we are to protect Zambia’s democratic ideals, we must reject such opportunistic behavior at every level and demand leaders who uphold their principles, no matter the cost.

PANICKING: Under Pressure Kamanga Fails To Respond To Keith Mweemba On Clandestine Attempt To Hide FAZ Financial Report; Resorts To Smear Campaigns

GUEST ARTICLE: [LONG READ] PANICKING: Under Pressure Kamanga Fails To Respond To Keith Mweemba On Clandestine Attempt To Hide FAZ Financial Report; Resorts To Smear Campaigns

By Augustine Mukoka

Andrew Kamanga is feeling the heat. His chances of getting a third term are diminishing by the day. That’s why instead of addressing issues raised on FAZ constitution breaches, he has resorted to a smear campaign against his strongest challenger, Keith Mweemba.

Kamanga’s response to Keith’s clarion call to councillors not to join the crusade by the FAZ Secretariat to abrogate the constitution speaks of a man under intense pressure to save his hold on power.

How a man who has previously claimed football is only 2 percent of what he is worth or does would be this desperate is not only shocking but telling.

Through the rogue outlet known as Zambia Whistleblower allegedly operated by Thomas Zgambo and a certain John Phiri, Kamanga exposes his hidden agenda to undermine the FAZ constitution as long as he gets a third term.

While Kamanga is abusing the FAZ constitution, he wants the likes of Keith and others to be campaigning in silence and ignore his constitutional mischief which is being carried out by FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga and Deputy General Secretary John Msimuko.

It’s unsurprising that even one of his chief supporters Oliver Sepiso Shalala is publicly rejecting Kamanga’s rebuttal to Keith’s clarion call as it is laced with falsehood.

In the last 72 hours, Kamanga has written two articles for the rogue publication – Zambia Whistleblower. Today, Kamanga has published a statement under his campaign team. That means a series of three articles published by Kamanga against one press statement by Keith.

To one of those articles on the rogue Zambia Whistleblower, Shalala responds,

“Please avoid always dragging the state into this topic. There is no state-sponsored or UPND-sponsored scheme to remove Andrew Kamanga. I am in the thick of things with the UPND communication team. I would have known about this scheme.

“By you peddling this line, which is not proven, you are slowly alienating those of us in the UPND who support Andrew and you reduce his chances drastically.

“Please for once listen to me and understand that you cannot deliver Andrew through the opposition element. Besides the majority opposition element is with one of the two contenders who are chasing Andrew behind.

“I know how you hate UPND and you may have good reasons but don’t use that hatred to hurt Andrews chances.

“Lastly am surprised but I thank you for unblocking me and allowing me to comment here for the first time since 2021.”

Kamanga’s mission is to brand Keith as a state-sponsored candidate so that football councillors shun him.

Kamanga thinks the way he became FAZ president through the help of the MMD government is the same way other people will take over from him. But unfortunately for Kamanga, he is even upsetting his strongest defenders like Oliver.

What Oliver should advise Kamanga is to respond to the issues Keith raised in the clarion call to FAZ Councillors instead of resorting to malice and falsehoods. The issues Keith raised can be summarized as follows:-

1. Breach of the FAZ Constitution

Asking councillors to sign a proposal outside the provisions of article 28 of the FAZ Constitution is illegal. Only FAZ Members (Clubs, officials & affiliated associations) & the FAZ Executive Committee have powers to make proposals for inclusion on the FAZ agenda, not the FAZ General Secretary. And these proposals have a timeline.

In the case of FAZ Members, their proposals must reach FAZ Secretariat 45 days before the AGM and such proposals must be communicated to all members 21 days before the meeting. There was no proposal to suspend the agenda 21 days before the March 29, 2025 AGM, so there can be no proposal to do so before the meeting on May 9, 2025.

2. Presentation of Financial Reports

These reports and other presentations are mandatory. The FAZ Constitution is categorical that the AGM must receive the presentation of the consolidated and revised balance sheet and the profit and loss statement and debate, approve, or disapprove the financial statements under Article 28.2 (i) (j).

By demanding the respect of the FAZ Constitution, how does Keith assume, in Kamanga’s view, the role of a state candidate. The FAZ Constitution gives Keith, his club (FC Muza) and other FAZ members the right to hold the FAZ Executive and the General Secretariat accountable.

Keith’s call genuinely serves the interests of FAZ. He wants councillors to understand their significant role in the management of football so that they uphold integrity in all decisions affecting Zambian football. Keith highlighted financial prudence as critical, insisting on transparent budgeting and spending practices.

Rather than respond to these very important issues, Kamanga has chosen to deflect councillors through petty and baseless articles that don’t make sense and makes no reference to the FAZ Constitution.

The guy is unfit to continue as FAZ president as he is not in the position to serve football, but himself. That’s why there is no record of him ever establishing his own football club.

When you work for Zambian football at grassroot level, it shows. Can Kamanga point to anything he worked on in Zambian football before politicians installed him as FAZ president? Nothing.

He was just a nomad, squatting at Power Dynamos, Kabwe Warriors and claims that he donated to City of Lusaka. Otherwise, there’s nothing showing he has built a football empire in Zambia.

Respect to Keith Mweemba!

UPND LUFWANYAMA PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN COORDINATOR DEFECTS TO CITIZENS FIRST PARTY

UPND LUFWANYAMA PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN COORDINATOR DEFECTS TO CITIZENS FIRST PARTY

… citing failed campaign promises amid economic challenges.

LUFWANYAMA, MONDAY, APRIL 28 2025 [SMART EAGLES]

Misheck Mwewa, the UPND Lufwanyama Presidential campaign coordinator has ditched the ruling party to join the Citizens First party.

Mr. Mwewa was received by CF President Harry Kalaba and senior party officials in Lufwanyama today.

Mr. Mwewa cited the failed campaign promises by the UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema as the reason for his defection.

Mr. Mwewa said it morally wrong for him to continue supporting the UPND when most of the things the UPND promised Zambians have not been fulfilled.

“At the moment I have no capacity to come and tell the people to support the UPND because most campaign promises have not been delivered and I have defected to CF because of these failed promises,” Mr. Mwewa said.

And addressing a well attended meeting,  Mr. Kalaba urged the people of Lufwanyama not to forget the many failed promises by the UPND especially the issue of fertilizer.

” When we form Government next year we will increase the number of bags of fertilizer because we value agriculture so much as a party. We will also work on major roads here in Lufwanyama and this the main reason I decided to drive here so that I appreciate the challenges, ” Mr. Kalaba said.

LONGWE URGES SP KABWATA LEADERSHIP TO CLOSE RANKS, RESIST UPND CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS

LONGWE URGES SP KABWATA LEADERSHIP TO CLOSE RANKS, RESIST UPND CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS

Lusaka… Monday April 28, 2025 – Socialist Party (SP) Member of the Central Committee in charge of membership recruitment, Horace Longwe, has urged the Kabwata Constituency leadership to embrace teamwork in their mobilisation efforts and to stand firm against the UPND’s proposed constitutional amendments.

Speaking when he met SP constituency leaders at Kamulanga Ward today, Longwe said it was only through unity and coordinated mobilisation that the party could build sufficient grassroots resistance to undemocratic reforms by the ruling party.

“We must work together if we are to mobilise effectively. By engaging residents in all five wards of Kabwata, we can build a strong movement to defend democracy and reject constitutional changes that do not reflect the will of the people,” Mr Longwe said.

He stressed that the role of the constituency executive was not merely administrative but was central to shaping political outcomes on the ground.

And speaking at the same meeting, fellow Central Committee member Joseph Chibanga called for a robust mobilisation drive across Kabwata.

He urged the local leadership to heighten political activities, raise awareness of the implications of the proposed amendments, and collaborate with other opposition forces to counter maneuvers by the UPND to prolong its hold on power.

“Our leadership at national level is committed to resisting these illegal and undemocratic proposals,” Mr Chibanga said. “We expect you at constituency level to match that commitment and join the fight.”

Mr Chibanga warned that failure to mobilise now would embolden the ruling party and set a dangerous precedent for the country’s democracy.

Also in attendance were Central Committee members Fletcher Kalobwe and Marian Mwango, who echoed calls for intensified grassroots engagement and vigilance.

The Socialist Party has maintained a strong stance against the UPND’s proposed constitutional changes, arguing that they are designed to weaken democratic institutions and entrench political power.

2026 is the key to unlock the mouth for both eating and talking- Hon. Mutotwe L. Kafwaya

Lunte Member of Parliament Hon. Mutotwe L. Kafwaya writes::::

STOP EATING AND STOP TALKING – leadership does not care.

Our economic and legal environments are speaking in clear terms.

The economics of our country Zambia today is such that leadership can export maize reserves when maize meal is excessively expensive. They can also export electricity when people are subjected to the experience of long hours of electricity load-shedding.

Resulting from that crippling electricity load-shedding, medium and small scale enterprises cannot operate optimally. Even large scale companies like Parmalat and Orca Deco would announce downsizing due to a bad economic environment.

Leadership does not care. If they did, practical steps would already be seen being done by now. Instead we are getting a promise of double the GDP should we give UPND a new lease of office in 2026.

But, if I may, there are questions to ask;

What has happened to the promise of cheap fuel?

What has happened to the promise of cheap maize meal?

What has happened to the promise of cheap fertilizer?

What has happened to the promise of no electricity load-shedding?

If what has happened to these promises is what will happen to the new GDP promise, then I expect a contraction of GDP should we give UPND another term of office.

I say so because we are talking about the same party, the same political philosophy, the same set of leaders who have the same meaning to the word ‘promise.’

This can only change if they denounce their earlier promises and say that when they told us that the cost of living would improve, they actually meant that it would deteriorate further.

And so, for those who could barely afford before 2021 elections, leadership is saying to you that stop eating! And they don’t care. We know what they could’ve done if they cared.

What is worse is that you won’t just stop eating, but you also have to stop talking! If you don’t heed, the same leadership has created laws to ensure that your freedom of expression is limited. Those are your cyber laws. They are now in place.

Keep quite and sadly stay hungry – 2026 is the key to unlock the mouth for both eating and talking.

I am sorry, but that is where we are.

Restoring EVERYTHING PATRIOTIC.

Dr. Edgar Lungu Calls for Reflection and Unity on Kenneth Kaunda Day

Dr. Edgar Lungu Calls for Reflection and Unity on Kenneth Kaunda Day

Lusaka, April 28 2025

Zambia’s sixth Republican President and Patriotic Front leader, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, has called on Zambians to reflect on the values of unity and peace championed by the country’s founding father, Dr. Kenneth David Buchizya Kaunda, as the nation commemorates Kenneth Kaunda Day.

In a statement issued today, Dr. Lungu described April 28 as a significant milestone in Zambia’s history, reminding citizens at home and abroad of the sacrifices made by forefathers for the peace and unity the country enjoys today.

“On this Kenneth Kaunda Day, allow me to celebrate Dr. Kenneth David Buchizya Kaunda by reminding each and every one of us of his legacy and contribution not only to Zambia but the entire African continent,” Dr. Lungu said.

Reflecting on Zambia’s early days of independence, Dr. Lungu noted that the country was a fragile blend of over 70 ethnic groups. However, Dr. Kaunda’s leadership, under the banner of the slogan “One Zambia, One Nation,” successfully promoted unity over division.

Dr. Lungu further challenged the nation to introspect and assess whether Zambia is living up to the aspirations of Dr. Kaunda today.

“As we remember Dr. Kaunda, are we as a country reflecting his desire and aspirations? Where are we today on this matter? Let us objectively introspect and make the necessary changes, where need be, going forward,” he urged.

The former president also highlighted Dr. Kaunda’s pivotal role in supporting liberation movements across southern Africa, including efforts in Zimbabwe, Namibia, South Africa, Angola, and Mozambique.

Calling for tolerance and mutual respect, Dr. Lungu urged both ruling and opposition political leaders to emulate the spirit of Dr. Kaunda and other freedom fighters by promoting peace and unity amidst diversity.

“We can do better as political leaders for our people, because posterity will only judge us based on our actions, inactions, and deeds today,” Dr. Lungu emphasized.

He concluded his message by invoking Dr. Kaunda’s iconic rallying cry, “Tiyende Pamodzi ndi Mtima Umozi” (Let us walk together with one heart), encouraging citizens to hold fast to the unity for which many sacrificed their lives.

“May God bless Zambia and I wish you all a happy and very reflective celebration of KK on this KK Day,” Dr. Lungu said.

Kenneth Kaunda Day was declared a public holiday in Zambia to honor the memory of the country’s first president, who served from 1964 to 1991 and played a pivotal role in the nation’s independence and the broader African liberation struggle.

PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA COMMENDED FOR PROGRESS IN THE MINING SECTOR

PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA COMMENDED FOR PROGRESS IN THE MINING SECTOR

28th April 2026

The Zambian economy remains heavily reliant on the mining sector, which contributes approximately 80% to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It is, therefore, imperative to acknowledge and commend President Hakainde Hichilema and his administration for their commitment to revitalising this crucial sector as part of the government’s broader strategy to stimulate employment creation and expand business opportunities for Zambians.

Significant strides have been made in unlocking key national mining assets such as Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), Mopani Copper Mines, and Kansenseli Gold Mine, a development that is already boosting Zambia’s economic growth trajectory.

I wish to sincerely commend Vedanta Resources for the commendable progress recorded at KCM. The mine is now operating more effectively and efficiently. Notable achievements include a 20% salary increment for employees, improvements in working conditions, the creation of new jobs, and expanded business opportunities for local enterprises. Furthermore, Vedanta is honoring its $20 million corporate social responsibility (CSR) pledge by investing in health services, sports development, and community driven initiatives.

Similarly, Mopani Copper Mines is registering encouraging progress. Employees have benefitted from a 15% salary increase, timely payments are being made to suppliers and contractors, and new employment and business opportunities are being generated for Zambians.

These developments are critical to enhancing our country’s economic resilience and improving the living standards of our people. It is, therefore, essential that we continue to support the government’s efforts to revitalise and develop the mining sector, a critical component of Zambia’s future growth.

Zambia’s Energy Dreams: Big Promises, Dim Light

Kumwesu opinion | Zambia’s Energy Dreams: Big Promises, Dim Light

Another day, another power deal.
Another grand promise, another flickering bulb.

Zambia’s government announced it had secured a stunning 5,000 megawatts of clean energy investment from the UK-based Echo Eight Investments Limited, promising to end the country’s crippling load-shedding by December 2025.

A few months earlier, it was the 2,000 megawatts solar partnership with the UAE’s Masdar, hailed as the solution to our blackouts and a power import deal with Tanzania via the newly launched Zambia–Tanzania Interconnector project.

Yet, while ministers celebrate and newspapers splash bold headlines, most Zambians are still boiling maize by candlelight and charging phones at the nearest barbershop.

Let’s be honest: We have heard it all before.

Energy Minister Makozo Chikote says Echo Eight will deploy 5,000 megawatts “within six months” once approvals are in. Six months! In a country where building a single school takes years. Where approvals for even a small business stall endlessly in dusty government offices.

Yes, Echo Eight says they have capital ready. Yes, they promise patented 3D solar technologies and rooftop wind turbines. It sounds impressive almost too impressive. Skepticism is not cynicism; it’s experience.

After all, the Masdar deal, signed with great excitement in 2023, is still stuck at promises. No panels, no plants, no lights just press statements.

The government is good at signing papers. Not so good at building infrastructure.

They announce, they pose for photos, they assure “fast-tracking” for credible investors then the projects disappear into a swamp of red tape, inefficiency, and political forgetfulness.

Meanwhile, we, the people, wait.
And wait.
And wait.
Zambia’s energy sector doesn’t just need more megawatts. It needs a complete system overhaul cutting corruption, fixing broken institutions, enforcing accountability, and insisting on strict timelines.

Otherwise, these shiny new deals will fade like the others, leaving us in the dark.

With elections barely a year away, such big announcements are politically convenient. “We are ending load-shedding!” sounds great on a campaign poster. But Zambians are tired of promises that only burn out faster than the kerosene lamps we still use.

Real progress isn’t measured by how many MOUs you sign in London boardrooms. It’s measured by whether the lights come on at night in Chingola, Chipata, and Chalala.

Until then, excuse us if we keep our celebrations muted. We’ve been promised bright futures before and ended up sitting in the dark.
