🧊 Frozen at 68: Edgar Lungu’s Birthday in a Fridge
Amb. Anthony Mukwita reflections
Author of Against All Odds: Edgar Lungu’s Rough Journey to State House
Preview for 11 November 2025.
Tomorrow, Edgar Chagwa Lungu would have turned 68. Instead of cake and his famously awkward funky chicken dance beside doting wife Esther Nyawa Lungu, he lies frozen in a South African morgue—boxed in a commercial fridge roughly 6 feet long, 2.5 feet wide, and 2 feet deep. A coffin of cold steel. A cage of bureaucracy.
About half a year after his death, Zambia’s sixth president remains unburied. His restless spirit circles between Lusaka and Pretoria, trapped in a diplomatic tug-of-war that has robbed him of rest, and robbed Zambia of closure. No dignity.
Born to Padule Saili Lungu and Tasila Jere, Edgar rose from Chimwemwe’s dust to command a nation and occupy State House.
He built roads, hospitals, and hope. He gave jobs to rivals, corn to the hungry, and dignity to the poor through an enhanced social cash transfer.
Edgar laughed easily, danced clumsily, and once ate a mango on the street, joking, and “I don’t think anyone wants me dead.” But death came. And now, it lingers.
His widow Esther pleads, “He is my man, my hubby. I want to bury him.” But the state insists on full honours.
Why now? Why the sudden embrace of a man they once barred from travel?
Like Emperor Henry IV, denied burial for political reasons, Edgar Lungu’s fate echoes history’s cruellest ironies. He preached unity, prayer, and peace.
Yet in death, he is denied all three. “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.” — Desmond Tutu.
Let this birthday be a turning point. Not for pomp. Not for politics. But for peace. Lest we forget as Rudyard Kipling once said.

A tear-jerker for a nation waiting to bury its son. MHSRIP—not in a fridge.
Mumbi Phiri Urges Makebi Zulu to Lead a Disciplined and Respectful Campaign
Lusaka | November 10, 2025
Former Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy Secretary General, Hon. Mumbi Phiri, has commended PF Presidential aspirant, Hon. Makebi Zulu, for the overwhelming support he continues to receive from the youth, describing it as a clear sign of acceptance and confidence in his leadership.
Speaking shortly after Makebi Zulu filed in his expression of interest to contest the party presidency, Mrs. Phiri urged him to remain steadfast in his leadership and uphold the values of discipline and respect throughout his campaign.
“Makebi, what you are witnessing here today is an acceptance from the youths. So go and lead a disciplined youth and a respectful campaign,” she said, drawing cheers from the crowd.
“If you see me insulting another leader especially your fellow aspirants chase me because politics of insults have not place in our campaign”
The atmosphere at the PF Secretariat was electric, with hundreds of supporters mostly young people chanting slogans and singing solidarity songs in support of Zulu’s bid for the party presidency.
Mrs. Phiri, known for her strong stance on intra-party unity and integrity, emphasized that the PF’s strength lies in its ability to maintain order and mutual respect even amid competitive internal politics.
“Our party must show the nation that democracy and discipline can coexist. Let this contest unite us, not divide us,” she added.
Hon. Makebi Zulu, a prominent Lusaka lawyer and former Eastern Province Minister, has emerged as one of the leading contenders in the race to succeed former President Edgar Lungu as PF President. His campaign has so far drawn significant attention, particularly from the youth, who view him as a symbol of generational renewal within the party.
The PF is expected to hold its elective general conference soon, where members will elect a new president to lead the party ahead of the 2026 general elections.
OVER 13 ARRESTED AFTER CHINGOLA RIOT DURING PRESIDENT HICHILEMA’S VISIT
By Joseph Kaputula
Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu has disclosed that more than 13 people have so far been arrested in connection with the riotous behavior that occurred on Saturday in Chingola district on the Copperbelt.
President Hakainde Hichilema was on Saturday forced to cut short his address to marketeers at Chiwempala grounds in Chingola after some agitated residents began throwing stones during his speech.
Addressing the media in Lusaka this morning, Mr. Mwiimbu says the suspects will be charged in accordance with law, emphasizing that the Zambia Police Service and other security wings will take decisive action against the perpetrators.
Mr. Mwiimbu has condemned the incident as unacceptable, warning that government will not tolerate acts of lawlessness that endanger public safety.
He has further revealed that security assessments suggest the riotous behavior may have been orchestrated by unknown individuals, whose motives are yet to be established.
Mr. Mwiimbu has since commended President Hichilema for exercising restraint by directing security personnel not to open fire on the unruly crowd, despite the provocation.
HH URGES UPND MEMBERS TO INTENSIFY MOBILIZATION EFFORTS ON THE COPPERBELT
Kitwe… Monday November 10, 2025 – President Hakainde Hichilema has called on members of the UPND to embark on intensive mobilisation efforts across the Copperbelt Province and beyond, saying the party must be strengthened to sustain the government’s ongoing development agenda.
Speaking during a meeting at Nkana Cricket Club in Kitwe yesterday, the President addressed thousands of UPND members drawn from all ten districts of the Copperbelt.
He said he was overwhelmed by the massive turnout and the show of love and support from the people.
President Hichilema reminded party members that for the UPND government to continue implementing key development programmes – including free education, students’ meal allowances and loans, the reopening of mines, increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF), and enhanced Social Cash Transfer – the party must remain strong and united.
He urged members to immediately begin grassroots mobilisation and recruit more people into the UPND, adding that the ruling party was the vehicle that brought them into government in August 2021.
The Head of State also encouraged citizens to acquire National Registration Cards (NRCs) and voter’s cards, and to confidently speak about the government’s numerous achievements on various platforms.
President Hichilema said the party was determined to entrench the UPND as a national party of choice, describing the Kitwe event as the launchpad for renewed mobilisation efforts across the country.
Meanwhile, the President expressed gratitude for the warm reception from the people of the Copperbelt, saying he was leaving the province encouraged by their support and commitment.
CHULUMANDA, LUNGU IN A PLOT TO ISOLATE M’MEMBE FROM OPPOSITION ALLIANCE
As Zambia heads toward the 2026 General Election, efforts to forge a united opposition front continue to face turbulence amid deep-seated mistrust and clashing political ambitions.
Sources close to the ongoing negotiations among opposition parties have revealed an emerging rift involving George Chulumanda and Muhabi Lungu of the Zambia We Want (ZWW) Party, who are reportedly strategising to sideline Socialist Party leader Fred M’membe from any potential opposition coalition.
According to the sources, the two political figures are working to ensure that Mr. M’membe does not become the presidential candidate for any alliance that includes ZWW. They are said to believe that M’membe, if elected, could adopt an authoritarian leadership style—an assessment that has shaped their quiet campaign to block his rise within opposition ranks.
“The two have agreed to frustrate any manoeuvres that could lead to M’membe emerging as the preferred opposition presidential candidate in 2026,” one source claimed.
Instead, Mr. Chulumanda and Mr. Lungu are reportedly positioning Dr. Kapembwa Simbao, ZWW’s president, as the alliance’s ideal choice for presidential candidate—or at least as a running mate to anyone except M’membe.
The insiders further disclosed that the duo welcomed Robert Sichinga’s departure from ZWW to the Socialist Party, describing it as “good riddance” and “removal of excess baggage.”
They also dismissed Richwell Siamunene’s involvement in party affairs, particularly his offer of his residence for secretarial operations, as inconsequential.
Political observers warn that if such internal manoeuvres persist, the Socialist Party and its leader may enter the 2026 polls appearing fragmented and disorganised, not because of public rejection, but due to mistrust within the opposition camp.
As Zambia’s opposition continues to wrestle with competing egos and ideological differences, the question remains whether unity against the ruling party can withstand the personal rivalries threatening to undo it from within.
NDC FACTION PRESIDENT AND UPND ALLIANCE MOBILIZATION CHAIRMAN JOSEPH KASONDE JOINS CITIZENS FIRST PARTY
… says the decision reflects his conviction that the Citizens First is the best party to offer and deliver to the aspirations of the New Zambia.
… President Saboi Imboela to entirely lead the NDC while he joins CF as a member.
LUSAKA, MONDAY, NOVEMBER, 10, 2025 SMART EAGLES)
NATIONAL Democratic Congress faction president and UPND- Alliance mobilization chairman Joseph Kasonde has joined the Citizens First Party led by Harry Kalaba.
In a statement made available to Smart Eagles in Lusaka today, Mr. Kasonde said the decision has been reached in the spirit of renewal and national service.
Mr. Kasonde said the Citizens First is the best party to offer and deliver to the aspirations of the New Zambia because of its emphasis on the the well being and social economic development of the Zambian citizens and uniting the country as a whole.
“After extensive data collection, analysis, interpretation, and wide consultation across our party structures, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the UPND Alliance, has resolved to pull out from the UPND Alliance and support the Citizens First (CF) Party President Harry Kalaba,” Mr. Kasonde said.
“This decision has been reached in the spirit of renewal and national service. It reflects our conviction that the Citizens First Party is the best party to offer and deliver to the aspirations of the New Zambia with their emphasis on the the well being and social economic development of the Zambian citizens and uniting Zambia as a whole. Zambia is too divided,” he said.
And Mr. Kasonde adds that the NDC faction has parted ways with the UPND Alliance respectfully, without bitterness, name-calling, or hostility adding that he remains grateful for the cooperation and goodwill extended to his faction during the period of collaboration.
“We have chosen to work with CF President Harry Kalaba because we see in him a principled, visionary, and patriotic and experienced leader. We pledge our total support and commitment to working and pushing the CF agenda for a new political path — Party, the MPs, the Mayors, and the Councillors — signaling a new beginning and renewed hope for our country,” Mr. Kasonde said.
“The NDC faction is happy to announce that as we come to CF, we shall allow President Saboi Imboela to lead the NDC while I join CF as a member,” He said.
“The NDC has existed as a 2 faction party following the resignation of our former President Dr Chishimba Kambwili who moved back to PF in 2020. With the split of the NDC, the faction which I lead remained with the UPND Alliance where Dr Chishimba Kambwili had taken us. Since then, the NDC has played its critical part with diligence, mutual respect, and loyalty in advancing the collective goals of the UPND Alliance,” He said.
Judge Anne Mary Kachenga Malata Ononuju denies bail to Raphael Nacinda
Judge Anne Mary Kachenga Malata Ononuju has ruled on the bail application made by Patriotic Front Secretary General, RAPHAEL NAKACINDA.
This follows an appeal against the confirmation of Mr. NAKACINDA’s conviction on charges of alleged criminal defamation of President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA.
Lusaka High Court Judge, ANNIE ONONUJU, has made a ruling after hearing the bail application and denied it claiming that the apoeal had little chance of success.
Mr. NAKACINDA’s lawyer, JONAS ZIMBA, argued that the defence had presented convincing legal grounds warranting the granting of bail.
Mr. NAKACINDA filed for bail following the High Court’s decision to uphold his 18-month custodial sentence handed down by the Subordinate Court for the repealed criminal defamation of President HICHILEMA.
In upholding the sentence, Judge ONONUJU ruled that although the Defamation of the President Law has since been repealed, it was still in effect in January 2022, when Mr. NAKACINDA was arrested.
Mr. NAKACINDA was convicted for alleging that President HICHILEMA had been summoning judges to his residence to influence their decisions in PF legal matters following the 2021 general election.
MAKEBI ZULU APPLAUDS SANGWA’S PUSH FOR CONSTITUTIONALISM, CIVIC AWAKENING
Prominent lawyer and Patriotic Front (PF) presidential contender Makebi Zulu has applauded Constitutional Lawyer and State Counsel John Sangwa SC’s effort to reawaken civic consciousness at a time when many citizens feel marginalised and disenchanted.
Speaking when the two held a consultative meeting, Mr Zulu expressed satisfaction with Mr Sangwa, who has taken the initiative to mobilise citizens under a new movement dedicated to advancing constitutionalism, accountability, and meaningful change in anticipation of the 2026 general elections.
He said the deliberations focused on the growing national sentiment that Zambia requires a renewed trajectory, one anchored in the rule of law, economic revitalisation, and a government that genuinely serves its people.
Mr Zulu said the two took particular interest in understanding the movement’s vision and underlying motivations.
He applauded the effort to reawaken civic consciousness at a time when many citizens feel marginalised and disenchanted.
Mr Zulu said that over recent months, they have received an overwhelming number of appeals from citizens across the country urging them to consider offering themselves for higher leadership in 2026.
He said in response, his team has embarked upon a broad-based consultation process involving stakeholders, opinion leaders, civil society representatives, and ordinary citizens.
Mr Zulu said the undertaking is not driven by personal ambition, but by a sincere commitment to listen, to understand the prevailing concerns and to explore how they might collectively restore hope and dignity to the nation.
Mr Zulu said the engagement with State Counsel Sangwa formed part of the wider consultative effort.
He said it is evident that Zambia requires a unity of purpose among all who are committed to justice, fairness, and economic empowerment for our people.
Mr Zulu said that whether through political parties, civic movements, or citizen-led initiatives, the call for genuine transformation is growing louder by the day.
He said as the consultations progress, his team remains firmly guided by the principle that leadership must be rooted in service, not self-interest, in listening, not imposition, and in the restoration of public confidence in the institutions, not their erosion.
Mr Zulu reiterated to Zambians that his team is listening.
He said together they shall forge a new path, one that restores prosperity, integrity, and enduring hope for our beloved country.
YOUTH ACTIVIST URGES PF MEMBERS AND ZAMBIANS TO SUPPORT MZ FOR PF PRESIDENCY
Copperbelt… Monday November 10, 2025
Copperbelt youth activist Ian Sinkala has called on all members of the Patriotic Front (PF) and well-meaning Zambians to rally behind Mr. Makebi Zulu as the next President of the PF and potential Republican President of Zambia.
Mr. Sinkala said Mr. Zulu has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, integrity, and commitment to national development, traits that are essential for steering the country forward.

Mr. Sinkala appealed to all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, to recognize and support capable leaders like Mr. Zulu who have the nation’s best interests at heart.
“Zambia deserves a leader who listens, who acts, and who inspires hope. Mr. Makebi Zulu is that leader,” Mr. Sinkala concluded.
Kenyan Lawyer Calls for Fresh Elections in Tanzania, Questions Legitimacy of 98% Victory
By: Ntv Kenya
Prominent Kenyan lawyer Kibe Mungai has called for fresh elections in Tanzania, saying there is “no legal or political basis” for the government to continue following the country’s disputed polls that gave President Samia Suluhu Hassan a 98 percent victory.
Speaking when he appeared on NTV’s Morning Cafe, Mungai, an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, argued that for electoral justice to be achieved, “there must first be justice.”
He added that the only way for President Suluhu to prove the legitimacy of her overwhelming win is to allow a repeat of the elections under fair and transparent conditions.
Mungai’s remarks come amid growing concerns from opposition groups and civil society organizations over alleged irregularities in Tanzania’s last general elections.
Observers from international watchdogs, including the African Union (AU) and Commonwealth, previously raised questions about transparency and the political environment surrounding the polls.
BREAKING: The Trump regime has removed a memorial honoring fallen Black soldiers who helped liberate Europe in WWII!
As part of their relentless war on Black history and purging all evidence of any accomplishment by anyone who wasn’t a white man, Pete Hegseth’s Pentagon has removed a two-panel memorial from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg, after complaints by the Heritage Foundation, a racism factory masquerading as a think tank.
“One of the two panels described how a million African-Americans volunteered for service during World War II, but had to fight against both the enemy and racism on their own side, including segregation within the army itself that confined many to supporting roles,” notes military history blogger @ChrisO_wiki. “A second panel was dedicated to telephone engineer George H. Pruitt, who died on June 10, 1945, while trying to save a comrade who had fallen into a river.”
It is beyond disgraceful that the Trump admin would demean the sacrifice of the brave Black Americans who risked their lives to liberate Europe from men like Pete Hegseth and the fascist devils at the Heritage Foundation. We cannot allow them to rewrite our history to suit their racist narrative.- Occupy Democrats
REMOVE HH WITH VOTES NOT STONES – DAVIES … the stoning of Hichilema in Chingola must be condemned by all Zambians
The stoning of President Hakainde Hichilema by Chingola residents must be condemned in the strongest terms by all Zambians, says former PF secretary general Davies Mwila.
And Mwila said he has finally decided to back Brian Mundubile ahead of his fellow PF presidential competitor Brian Mudolo to take over as the PF’s president.
Speaking with Daily Revelation yesterday on the stoning incidence of President Hichilema by Chingola residents on Saturday, Mwila said the country had other presidents like Edgar Lungu and Rupiah Banda who eventually lost power, but were never https://dailyrevelationzambia.com/remove-hh-with-votes-not-stones-davies-the-stoning-of-hichilema-in-chingola-must-be-condemned-by-all-zambians/
🇿🇲 CONTEXT | Chingola Violence, Presidential Warning, and the Emerging Narrative
President Hakainde Hichilema has issued his strongest warning yet following the violent unrest in Chingola. Speaking to UPND officials in Kitwe, he said he had previously exercised restraint but would not tolerate repeated provocations. He stressed that some of the individuals behind Saturday’s attack may be planning similar disruptions ahead of the 2026 polls. His message was clear.
“I protected those who disturbed us yesterday. Baleichindika. They should not extend their luck.” He added that his instruction in 2021 to avoid revenge still stands.
The police response has intensified. Three additional suspects were arrested on Sunday, bringing the total to five. Inspector General Graphel Musamba said law enforcement will pursue all those involved until “all perpetrators are brought to book.” He reminded the public that peaceful expression is protected, but violence is criminal. Reinforcements have now been deployed across Chingola.
Local market leaders have moved to distance the community from the incident. Several market committees in Chiwempala apologised publicly on Sunday. Their statements expressed regret and assured authorities that traders “do not support violence against any leader.” They called the behaviour of the rioters unacceptable and said the disruption was “not representative of Chingola residents.”
These apologies suggest internal pressure to protect the district’s image.
The Law Association of Zambia has also condemned the violence. The association warned that attacks on a Head of State “amount to a direct assault on national order.” It urged political actors to avoid exploiting the incident and called for an investigation that protects due process.
LAZ underlined that democratic dissent must never translate into physical harm. Their position adds a legal framing to what has been an emotionally charged national conversation.
Notably, voices within the Patriotic Front have also rejected the riot. PF’s Willah Mudolo said the party “does not celebrate violence” and urged supporters to avoid actions that place citizens at risk. His statement is significant because online celebrations have largely come from PF-aligned pages. The separation between official PF voices and the wider online ecosystem is becoming clear.
The reactions on social media remain polarised. Sections of the opposition base have celebrated the disruption, posted memes, and invoked Tanzania-style uprisings. Others have claimed that the riot reflects copperbelt frustrations. Yet many Zambians condemned the conduct. Some of the strongest criticism came from neutral users who warned that “no leader deserves stoning” and that Zambia must “not turn political anger into national chaos.”
Security analysts believe the incident had elements of coordination. The group that stoned the President, the group that looted shops, and the group that pursued the motorcade appeared to operate in sequence. Their path from Chiwempala Market to the landing zone indicates prior familiarity with the movement patterns of presidential visits. Several commentators with experience in crowd control say the behaviour was not spontaneous.
The underlying tension remains unchanged. Illegal mining networks, informal groups displaced by recent policing of the copperbelt, and political actors seeking campaign momentum all have stakes in amplifying disorder.
President Hichilema’s warning suggests the state views Saturday’s incident not as an isolated fracas but as a test of the security environment heading into the 2026 election cycle.
The situation in Chingola now sits at the intersection of law enforcement, politics, economic grievance, and online mobilisation.
WHY GIVEN LUBINDA IS THE STRONG CANDIDATE FOR PF PRESIDENT
Augustine Mwewa writes……..
Given Lubinda’s impressive track record as a leader, including his 20 years in Parliament where he managed Kabwata constituency exceptionally well, makes him a strong contender for PF President.
His role in managing the transition after ECL’s passing showcases his leadership skills and ability to navigate complex situations.
The late President ECL’s decision to appoint him Vice President after Inonge Wina stepped down highlights the potential he saw in Lubinda.
As a leader, he’s not tied to tribal affiliations, which could be a significant advantage for PF. He’s known for commanding respect, believing in hard work, and avoiding useless handouts. He believes in discipline and accountability, which serves him well in leadership roles.
Lubinda has been tested, remaining strong and committed to PF even after the 2021 defeat, while others left the party. His tenure as Justice Minister was marked by notable achievements, including the removal of the discriminatory Parentage clause, showcasing his commitment to fairness and equality.
With his calm and composed nature, Lubinda is well-positioned to handle the presidency effectively, making him an attractive choice for PF President. His experience, leadership skills, and vision for the party and the country make a strong case for his candidacy.

FORMER MINISTER ATTRIBUTES STONING OF PRESIDENT HICHILEMA TO INCREASED HUNGER LEVELS IN THE COUNTRY
By Nelson Zulu
Former Labour minister Fackson Shamenda says the stoning of President Hakainde Hichilema on Saturday in Chingola on the Copperbelt by an angry mob is due to increasing hunger levels in the country.
In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Shamenda says while the act is worrying, the government must ascertain the root cause and take a deep reflection on how it is running the affairs of the country.
He has noted that the incident marks an unprecedented development in the country’s political history and signals growing frustration among citizens and is urging the government to keenly listen to the concerns being raised and take corrective measures.
Mr. Shamenda also warns that such occurrences, if left unaddressed, could set a dangerous precedent for the future, especially that the country is already in the election mood.
Meanwhile, Former Defence minister Richwell Siamunene has blamed the Chingola incident to lack of preparedness from the President’s security personnel.

The President reminded party members of the struggles they endured while in opposition and urged them not to take the nation’s peace for granted.

He further urged UPND members across the country to work hard ahead of next year’s general elections by mobilizing support, registering as voters, and recruiting new members.
The Head of State said the party must go flat out and turn up in large numbers on election day to continue driving Zambia’s development agenda.
Meanwhile, several UPND members have condemned the Chingola incident and called for an end to acts of hooliganism and violence within the party. [ Diamond TV ]

UPND has no time to waste on buying CF members – Elvis
By Mubanga Mubanga
UPND deputy spokesperson Elvis Nkandu says his party has a lot of things to think about than wasting time buying Citizens First (CF) members.
And Nkandu has distanced himself and the UPND from the confusion allegedly happening in the Socialist Party, and has advised the party to put its house in order.
Last week, CF secretary general Vincent Chintu accused the UPND of planning to undermine CF through sponsored defections and inducements.
Chintu alleged that the party had received credible information that the UPND had intentions to start buying their party’s provincial and district chairpersons across the country.
“The CF wishes to alert it’s members and the general public to a coordinated scheme sanctioned and financed by State House aimed at distablising the party’s growing momentum ahead of the 2026 general elections,” Chintu said.
But in an interview with Daily Revelation over the weekend, Nkandu who is also Sports minister said the UPND had no intentions whatsoever
UPND POINTS TO ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION AS KEY TO RE-ELECTION
By Lukundo Nankamba
UPND Media Director Mark Simuuwe, says the positive economic transformation under the new dawn administration is reason for the public to maintain support ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Speaking to Phoenix News in an interview, Mr. Simuuwe highlights that despite Zambia going into default mode in 2020,the country under the UPND regime became the first country under the G20 common framework to succeed in debt restructuring.
He has further cited significant achievements under the UPND government such as infrastructure, education, social programs, health and recruitment among others.
Mr. Simuuwe says the party is likely to secure a re-election next year through its growing strength as witnessed in the recently held by-elections.
While acknowledging that the economy is faced with challenges, Mr. Simuuwe is of the view that the overwhelming economic transformation demonstrates why people will vote for the party again.
Former Botswana President Ian Khama describes Tanzanian Samia Suluhu as ILLEGITIMATE PRESIDENT.
“The recent election in Tanzania and from what transpired, the killings around the election… I for once do not recognise the person who was inaugurated as the President of Tanzania. She is an illegitimate president.”
https://youtu.be/rMloDlnXyrM?si=p3uNB62H3aanO7CS
“It is totally unacceptable when an African leader, in order to stay in power, will resort to killing his or her own people. In order to stay in power, they will rig an election, as if they are God’s gift to their country.”
“When you have a country with millions of people, for any leader to think they are the only ones who can be president is pathetic.”
Malawi’s delays to remit to Zambia 40 percent or about K53.9 billion ($30.8 million) of the total cost of 200 000 metric tonnes (MT) of maize have held up inflow of the grain into the country.
In a written response to The Nation enquiry on the status of the maize imports meant to fill a national deficit of 800 000 metric tonnes (MT), Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development spokesperson Arnold Namanja said authorities are still working on arrangements, including processing of a down paymet
In total, Malawi is to pay about K134.8 billion ($77 million) for the maize deal which President Peter Mutharika sealed with his Zambian counterpart Hakainde Hichilema mid last month and was formally signed on October 22 2025 in Lilongwe by the two countries’ ministers of Agriculture.
Mutharika, speaking on arrival in Lilongwe from Mangochi on October 29, indicated that the maize would start arriving in the country from Friday, October 31 2025.
But Namanja said: “The ministries of Agriculture, Justice and Treasury together with the National Food Reserve Agency [NFRA] are currently working on finalising the requisite paperwork, identifying transporters, and putting in place the required logistical processes to facilitate the smooth delivery of the maize.
“According to the agreement, the Government of Malawi is required to pay 40 percent of the total contract value before the maize is uplifted into the country.”
Namanja said various stakeholders, including cooperating partners such as the World Bank are working to finalise the 40 percent transaction to enable the maize deliveries to start.
But for the four million Malawians hit by acute food insecurity this year, help cannot come soon enough as government struggles to mobilise resources.
During the launch of the 2025-26 Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme in Machinga on November 1 2025, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Roza Fatch Mbilizi said total requirements for the food security cluster stand at K168.82 billion ($96.42 million), but only K46 billion ($26.18 million) had been mobilised.
“The plea of the government is that we need to fill up this deficit to make sure that this programme runs smoothly. It’s a six months programme and we know that our donors will be forthcoming,” she said.
On how the available money will be used, Namanja said stakeholders are working closely and swiftly to ensure efficient utilisation to support the importation process.
“It is the wish of the government that this process of negotiations and documentation is accelerated so that maize deliveries can commence.
“This coordinated approach will guarantee timely delivery of the maize and adequate stock levels in the Strategic Grain Reserves [SGR] to meet national food security needs during this lean season,” he said.
The maize deal, signed on October 22 in Lilongwe, is aimed at stabilising the price of maize in the country and provide as relief to four million Malawians facing hunger as per the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (Mvac) data.
The lean period will cover six months from October 2025 to March 2026, according to Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma).
Meanwhile, Dodma is drawing 25 982.24MT from the SGR under NFRA which it has started distributing to those in need.
State produce trader Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation is also scheduled to draw 10 000MT from the SGR for price stabilisation while NFRA is expected to continue buying maize from mega farmers and others locally to supplement the Zambia imports.

ANC confirms Mchunu’s willingness to step aside from organizational duties
The African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu expressed his willingness to step aside from organisational responsibilities following the announcement of a judicial commission of inquiry by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The party said Mchunu continues to cooperate with both the Madlanga Commission and the ANC Integrity Commission, describing his actions as “in line with the movement’s values of accountability, discipline and respect for due process.”
The ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) reviewed Mchunu’s case and, consistent with party policy, agreed that while Mchunu remains on special leave from his Cabinet duties, he will still perform organisational tasks within the party.
The ANC said it will continue to monitor developments, and that the NEC will revisit the matter should new developments arise.
This decision follows explosive allegations made publicly by KwaZulu‑Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who on 6 July 2025 accused Mchunu and other senior law‑enforcement officials of colluding with business people and interfering in investigations including the disbandment of the multi‑agency “Political Killings Task Team” that was investigating politically motivated murders.
Critics of the ANC say that allowing Mchunu to remain in organisational roles while under such serious scrutiny appears to contradict the so‑called “step‑aside rule” which expects members facing serious allegations to relinquish their responsibilities.
How the ANC navigates Mchunu’s case may serve as a litmus test of its ability to uphold ethical leadership while preserving party unity.
King Misuzulu weds Queen Nomzamo in historic Zulu royal ceremony
The traditional wedding of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and Queen Nomzamo kaMyeni is currently underway at the KwaKhangelamankengane Royal Palace in Nongoma, KwaZulu‑Natal, marking a landmark cultural moment for the Zulu nation.
Following months of legal and traditional uncertainty, the ceremony drew dignitaries, royal family members, and large numbers of community participants.
Among the notable attendees is EFF leader Julius Malema and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, who joined in celebrating the historic union.
Convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester has launched a fresh legal bid demanding improved prison conditions, arguing that his current treatment is unconstitutional, according to City Press.
Bester who infamously faked his death to escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre in 2022 is challenging the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) in the Johannesburg High Court.
He claims his status as a sentenced inmate should be reviewed and that he should be granted rights similar to those awaiting trial, including contact visits with family and legal representatives, report City Press.
The man known as the “Facebook R*pist” was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2012 for rape, robbery, and the murder of his girlfriend, model Nomfundo Tyhulu. His dramatic escape drew national attention when a body later identified as Katlego Bereng Mpholo was found in his burned cell. Bester was captured nearly a year later in Tanzania together with his partner, Dr Nandipha Magudumana.
This is not Bester’s first complaint about his treatment. Previously, he alleged he was kept in near-solitary confinement at the Kgosi Mampuru II C-Max facility, claiming harsh conditions affected his mental health.
The DCS has dismissed his latest claims, insisting Bester receives standard treatment for a maximum-security inmate. The department emphasised that solitary confinement is not practised in South Africa and said high-security prisoners are housed individually as a matter of routine, not punishment.
Officials further argued that strict security is necessary due to Bester’s proven ability to orchestrate sophisticated escape plans. “Thabo Bester enjoys the same privilege as other inmates,” a DCS spokesperson maintained.
While Bester fights for what he describes as more humane treatment, he still faces a separate criminal trial. He and several co-accused including Magudumana are due to appear in the Free State High Court in February 2025 on charges ranging from murder and fraud to violation of a corpse and escape from lawful custody.
Jacob Zuma Foundation condemns upcoming trial of Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla as political persecution
The Jacob Zuma Foundation has issued a strongly worded statement condemning what it calls the “renewed abuse of state power” against former President Jacob Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, ahead of her trial scheduled for tomorrow at the Durban High Court.
The foundation alleges that Zuma-Sambudla faces politically motivated charges of terrorism, incitement to public violence, and related offenses stemming from her social media posts during the July 2021 unrest in South Africa. Those riots erupted following former President Zuma’s imprisonment for contempt of court, resulting in more than 350 deaths and billions of rand in damage.
“The State’s case against Ms Zuma-Sambudla rests on a bizarre premise: that her social media posts somehow ‘incited’ unrest,” the statement reads. It claims her posts were reactive commentary during a period when millions of South Africans were expressing anger over her father’s imprisonment. The foundation argues that the charges represent an attempt to “criminalise freedom of speech and suppress political expression,” pointing to liberation-era slogans such as “Amanda!” and “Azishe!” as part of South Africa’s historical struggle lexicon.
The statement also references the prior legal battles of Zuma-Sambudla’s brother, Duduzane Zuma, highlighting failed prosecutions related to alleged “state capture” and a car accident, portraying these cases as part of a long-standing campaign against the Zuma family.
Prosecutors, however, maintain that Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla’s posts were linked to the violent unrest of July 2021 and argue that her trial could set a legal precedent for social media accountability in incitement cases.
The trial of Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla is scheduled to commence tommorow, 10 November 2025, placing South Africa once again at the center of a high-profile legal and political debate involving the Zuma family.
The high-stakes trial of Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former president Jacob Zuma, begins today at the Durban High Court, bringing renewed focus to the painful legacy of the July 2021 unrest.
Nearly four years after the riots that left more than 350 people dead, Zuma-Sambudla faces charges of incitement to commit terrorism and public violence over social media posts made during the chaos.
The Jacob Zuma Foundation has condemned the trial of Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, calling it “political persecution” and part of a campaign to harass the former president’s family.
Prosecutors argue her posts on X (formerly Twitter) fuelled violence and encouraged lawlessness as unrest swept through KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng following Zuma’s imprisonment for contempt of court.
Evidence under scrutiny includes messages praising unrest hotspots and sharing shutdown calls under the hashtag #FreeJacobZuma. The National Prosecuting Authority has described its case as “watertight.”
Her legal team, led by Advocate Dali Mpofu, strongly disputes that view. Zuma-Sambudla has pleaded not guilty, insisting her posts were political commentary being unfairly weaponised against her. Her lawyers argue the charges are politically motivated and aimed at targeting her father and the MK Party, where she now serves as a Member of Parliament. The MK Party has echoed that sentiment, accusing the state of “persecution.”
The case unfolds against the backdrop of the devastating 2021 unrest, one of the most violent periods in post-apartheid South Africa. The riots caused massive destruction, with damages estimated at R75 billion, exposing deep economic inequalities and public frustration.
The trial, set to run until 21 November 2025, is expected to test the NPA’s ability to prosecute complex, politically sensitive cases. It is believed to be the first time in South Africa that an individual faces terrorism-related charges based solely on social media activity. The court will need to determine whether Zuma-Sambudla’s posts can be directly linked to acts of violence and whether they demonstrate criminal intent.

In a recent emotional statement, Cardi B compared her relationship struggles with Offset to the public love between Rihanna and A$AP Rocky. She said, “Sometimes I get jealous of Rihanna — her man loves her openly and takes care of their kids. Offset would deny me faster than Peter denied Jesus.”
Cardi also added, “You can’t stop a man like Offset from cheating. I regret the day I met him. Look at how A$AP treats his family — I get jealous.”

Burkina Faso Halts South African Coach’s Planned Events
Authorities in Burkina Faso have banned events that were set for November 8 by South African coach Nkulukeko, according to an official government source.
The government said the decision was made because the country currently has “more urgent priorities for its people.” No further details were provided about the nature of the events or future plans.
“Earlier today, we convened a consultative meeting with Constitutional Lawyer and State Counsel, Mr. John Sangwa, S.C., who has taken the commendable initiative to mobilise citizens under a new movement dedicated to advancing constitutionalism, accountability, and meaningful change in anticipation of the 2026 general elections.
Our deliberations focused on the growing national sentiment that Zambia requires a renewed trajectory one anchored in the rule of law, economic revitalisation, and a government that genuinely serves its people. We took particular interest in understanding the vision and underlying motivations of this movement, and we applaud the effort to reawaken civic consciousness at a time when many citizens feel marginalised and disenchanted.
Over recent months, we have received an overwhelming number of appeals from citizens across the country, urging us to consider offering ourselves for higher leadership in 2026.
In response, we have embarked upon a broad-based consultation process involving stakeholders, opinion leaders, civil society representatives, and ordinary citizens. This undertaking is not driven by personal ambition, but by a sincere commitment to listen, to understand the prevailing concerns, and to explore how we might collectively restore hope and dignity to our nation.
The engagement with State Counsel Sangwa formed part of this wider consultative effort. It is evident that Zambia requires a unity of purpose among all who are committed to justice, fairness, and economic empowerment for our people. Whether through political parties, civic movements, or citizen-led initiatives, the call for genuine transformation is growing louder by the day.
As these consultations progress, we remain firmly guided by the principle that leadership must be rooted in service, not self-interest, in listening, not imposition and in the restoration of public confidence in our institutions, not their erosion.
To the people of Zambia, we wish to reiterate, we are listening. And together, we shall forge a new path one that restores prosperity, integrity, and enduring hope for our beloved country.

ISSUED BY: GRAPHEL C. MUSAMBA INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE ZAMBIA POLICE SERVICE DATE: 9TH NOVEMBER, 2025
Acting Patriotic Front (PF) faction President Given Lubinda has officially filed his nomination to contest the party presidency ahead of the PF National Conference scheduled for November 2025.
Lubinda has since paid the required K200,000 nomination fee.
Lubinda becomes the latest aspirant to do so, joining others such as Lusaka lawyer Makebi Zulu, who is yet to file his nomination.
He says his filing reflects that his party is democratic
Recently, South Africa-based businessman Willah Mudolo also joined the list of presidential hopefuls after paying the K200,000 fee.
Other presidential aspirants who have already filed their nominations and been adopted by the party’s Central Committee include Brian Mundubile, Greyford Monde, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, Emmanuel Mwamba, Miles Sampa, Mutotwe Kafwaya, Dr. Chitalu Chilufya, Dr. Chishimba Kambwili, and Goodward Mulubwa.
The Patriotic Front is holding its national conference for the first time since the death of its former leader and sixth Republican President Edgar Lungu, who passed away on June 5, 2025.
Former President Lungu has not yet been buried due to an ongoing impasse between his family and the Zambian government.
⬆️ Zambia Confronts Political Upheaval After Stoning of President Hichilema in Chingola
Zambia is in its most serious security confrontation in years after President Hakainde Hichilema came under attack during a visit to Chiwempala Market in Chingola on Saturday. Stones were hurled at the Head of State. His tent was burned.
A police vehicle was torched. State intelligence units are now reviewing videos, photographs and digital communications to determine whether the incident was spontaneous or organised.
The gravity of the attack has cut across Zambia’s political divide.
Sunday Chanda issued the bluntest warning yet. “Such attacks must be condemned by every citizen,” he said, calling the stoning “a threat to the rule of law and the dignity of our nation.” He demanded a full, public investigation and a security overhaul, adding that “any imminent threat to the life of the President is intolerable and must attract swift and decisive consequences.”
John Sangwa echoed the alarm. He called the Chingola violence “a betrayal of the Republic’s founding values” and said it revealed “a deeper national crisis marked by the erosion of public trust and the weakening of state institutions.”
Sangwa urged the country to pull back from escalation as Zambia moves toward the 2026 elections, warning that political temper and institutional fragility are converging at a dangerous moment.
Civil society groups have also broken ranks with the street anger. The Governance and Development Advocates Zambia described the attack as “shameful and unpatriotic.”
Executive director Elias Mulenga said, “You don’t stone a nation’s peace. The Presidency symbolises the unity and dignity of every Zambian.” He urged police to track all participants and pressed youths to abandon “acts that endanger public order.”
Even within the opposition, condemnation has been direct. PF supporter Chomba Kaoma said, “If you cannot respect Hichilema as an individual, at least respect the office he holds.” Kaoma argued that the President “chose humiliation over bloodshed” when he refused to authorise force during the breach. He warned that citizens often “underestimate the extent to which the system can go when it comes to protecting the President.”
President Hichilema addressed the province hours later at a UPND fundraising dinner in Ndola, telling Copperbelt residents that Zambia must not “go back to thuggery.” He said the country is adjusting to a different way of governance, one based on order rather than patronage. “I know Zambians have not been used to this style of management,” he said. “But you will be okay. I can see where we are going.”
The President used a personal memory to underline the danger of political violence. He recalled being attacked in Ndola as an opposition leader when cadres stormed a radio station where he was being interviewed, forcing him to escape through a window. He said that history must not repeat itself.
Police and intelligence officers are under pressure to produce a credible investigation. Social media footage shows groups of youths throwing stones, burning property and shouting as the presidential protection unit attempted to extract the Head of State.
Investigators are mapping digital activity to determine whether local criminal groups, political actors or paid agitators were involved.
The Chingola attack has become a national test. It raises questions about the stability of Zambia’s political environment, the capacity of the state to protect its institutions and the conduct of political actors in a season of rising tension.
As one senior official put it privately, “This was not hooliganism. This crossed into an assault on the state.”
This is an indisputable fact – President Hichilema’s greatest achievement has been on the economy.
Stopping the free fall it was in, and somehow managing to keep Zambia running, is something no one who stood in 2021, or is currently putting their hand up for 2026, would have achieved.
There is a paradox, though.
It is probably harder for a good part of everyday Zambians to get their daily plate of nsima under this government, than it was under President Lungu’s PF.
That is especially true, if one operates in the informal and semi formal economies in the urban areas.
This is the reason.
Under President Lungu, the government was borrowing like lenders were Santa. Most of that borrowed money was stolen, in the millions of dollars, by leaders and their connected.
The stolen money was then being thrown around, like happens to most money not worked for .
So, if you had a carwash, there were loads of cars for you to wash. If you had a bar, big buyers emptied your fridge, allowing whoever wanted to, to drink themselves motherless.
Builders were rolling in money from people who did not care if cement was stolen.
Houses in Salama area of Lusaka were in high demand, rented at thrice the market rate for connected men’s multiple girlfriends.
Yes, money felt easier to have.
But it was that money that sunk our economy. Had the PF stayed in power, and continued treating public money as though it came from a bottomless pit, we would have crossed over into a combination of Zimbabwe and Somalia.
A collapsed economy in which a few people are super wealthy and violently silence everyone else. Rough would not have begun to describe what life for ordinary citizens would have been.
With all that in mind, observing the absolute delight with which opposition leaders have responded to the riot by illegal miners in Chingola, yesterday, both amuses and disgusts me.
You see, most people in opposition, now, either created the mess we are in, or have absolutely no idea how to sort it out.
Back to this government.
That we have a country that has no idea the smokey engine it complains about could have been knocked, with vehicle on stones, is crazy.
That’s mostly the fault of the incompetent communication function President Hichilema holds on to, but hey. That has been said.
I will end by saying – there is a lot about HH’s presidency to criticise, and most of it is his politics.
Maybe, the people scrambling for State House can suggest they would do better on that count.
The economy though – banama. Put together – they are not half HH, and his Team, on the economy.
⬆️ BUILD UP | PF Endorsements, Factions, & Power Struggles
The Patriotic Front’s convention is gathering momentum on paper but fracture lines on the ground. The endorsement of Brian Mundubile by twenty-nine PF MPs was presented as a show of strength, but it has opened a deeper argument inside the party about legitimacy, timing and its unfinished history. The PF base is now split between those who see Mundubile as the is “incoming” party President and those who believe the MPs have forced a premature coronation. The leadership space has turned volatile.
Mundubile accepted the endorsement in a video released Saturday afternoon. His tone was confident. He pledged servant leadership, economic revival, restored civil service morale, protection for farmers and renewed opportunities for young people. He framed himself as the man who will “grow the PF” and restore stability. The message was polished and targeted. It was also immediately challenged by critics who asked why these promises never surfaced during the PF’s decade in power. The gap between his current posture and the PF’s past performance became the central line of attack online.
Kambwili drove that point home with characteristic bluntness. Asked to comment, he warned that “mpombo wibilima, ababilima tabaya,” a proverb implying that those who start early are often driven by fear rather than certainty. He labelled the endorsement “desperation,” arguing that genuine political capital is proven through patient, broad-based mobilisation, not early endorsements. His comments resonated with sections of the PF faithful who are uneasy about anointed favourites and fear a repeat of the 2014 succession turmoil.
Given Lubinda’s position has grown more fragile. Some of his allies argue that tribal bias has been weaponised to undermine him and that he has been pushed to the margins despite being the official acting president. They point out that his voice has been muted in the very process he is constitutionally supposed to guide. This perception has intensified internal suspicion that regions inside the PF are reorganising around identities, not principles. The silence around Lubinda’s authority has become part of the PF’s leadership crisis.
Mundubile, meanwhile, is using the advantage of motion. His schedule has been visible and deliberate. He has been meeting Catholic clergy. He has appeared at funerals, weddings and constituency events. He has maintained quiet but consistent outreach to provincial structures, especially in Luapula and Northern. The strategy signals an ambition to project inevitability while staying away from open fights. His supporters describe him as “the only candidate organising at constituency level.” His critics argue that visibility does not equal national reach.
The base remains unconvinced that any aspirant has a plan for the regions where PF collapsed. No contender has yet energised Southern, Western, North Western or large parts of Central Province. These blocs hold large numbers of voters. PF lost credibility there long before 2021 and has not rebuilt structures since. A candidate whose message cannot cross provincial borders enters 2026 with a mathematical disadvantage long before ballots are printed.
Inside the base, there is also unease about the return of Makebi Zulu, who has positioned himself as the defender of jailed PF figures. His supporters view him as the continuity link to the Lungu family. His critics accuse him of gaining political capital from the Lungu body saga and abandoning the family once he re-entered the PF race. The friction between the “green base” and the mainstream PF structures is now shaping online sentiment and offline alliances.
The convention now carries high stakes. It is no longer simply a leadership contest. It is an identity test. The PF must decide whether it wants a candidate of loyalty, a candidate of momentum, a candidate of mobilisation or a candidate with national reach. Each path carries risk. Each path reflects a different memory of the party’s past and a different hope for its future. What stands clear today is that the PF is racing toward its most consequential internal election since 2014, and the party’s centre is slipping faster than its leaders can hold it.
