Groom Sentenced to Life for R@p!ng Bride’s 9-Year-Old Relative at His Wedding Celebrations

Life Sentence for Groom Who Raped Bride’s 9-Year-Old Relative at His Wedding Celebrations

A 45-year-old man from Dennilton, Limpopo, has been sentenced to life in prison for raping his bride’s nine-year-old relative during his own wedding celebrations.

The High Court in Polokwane delivered the harsh sentence after the groom’s monstrous actions shattered what should have been a joyous occasion.

Brutal Attack During Wedding Celebrations
The horrific incident occurred on 24 December 2023 at the wedding ceremony where the man was the groom.

According to IOL, the victim, her mother, younger sibling, and two aunts—all part of the bride’s family—were offered a room to sleep in at the bride’s residence after the festivities.

Predatory Assault in the Dead of Night
In the early hours, the groom entered the room where the child was sleeping, carried her to an unoccupied bedroom, and raped her. The girl’s screams for help forced the attacker to flee.

Her mother found her naked and immediately reported the crime to the police, leading to the groom’s arrest.

Damning Evidence Secures Conviction
During the trial, state advocate Shirley Mawasha presented overwhelming evidence, including a J88 medical report, DNA evidence, and testimony from the accused’s uncle, who confirmed that the man had admitted to the assault and expressed remorse to him.

The prosecution argued that the accused had betrayed the family’s trust, exploiting his role as a protector.

“His actions turned a day meant for celebration into a horror, damaging the relationship between the two families irreparably due to his greed,” Mawasha said.

Court Condemns ‘Arrogance,’ Imposes Maximum Sentence
In delivering the judgment, the judge condemned the accused’s actions, stating that as a newlywed, he should have spent his first night with his bride, not committing an act “fit for movies, not real life.”

The court noted the accused’s “ruthless lack of conscience” and his continued arrogance despite DNA evidence linking him to the crime. The judge emphasized the need to protect society, particularly vulnerable groups, and to deter similar offenders.

In addition to life imprisonment, the court:
– Declared him unfit to possess a firearm,
– Added his name to the National Register of Sexual Offenders,
– Barred him from ever working with children.

YO MAPS SAYS HE ONLY FOUND OUT BUKATA CHANGED SCHOOLS AFTER TRYING TO PAY HER TUITION, HE NOW SEEKS PRIMARY CUSTODY THROUGH COURT

YO MAPS SAYS HE ONLY FOUND OUT BUKATA CHANGED SCHOOLS AFTER TRYING TO PAY HER TUITION, HE NOW SEEKS PRIMARY CUSTODY THROUGH COURT

A report by Diamond TV has revealed that singer Elton Mulenga alias Yo Maps has applied to the Lusaka Magistrates seeking primary custody of Bukata, citing her mother Mwizukanji Nakamba’s failure to co-parent.

A part of a circulating affidavit submitted to the court revealed a number of things Yo Maps complained about, including accusing Mwizukanji of trying to estrange and alienate his daughter from him.

The singer also highlighted how bad communication is from Mwizukanji’s end as he said in the affidavit that he had to get information about his daughter from rumours, gossip, and social media.

He gave one example among many others, he said he only found out that his daughter was transfered from Great North Road Academy without his consent after he tried to pay her school fees, an act he says embarrassed and scared him.

Yo Maps further added in the affidavit that despite requesting early for Bukata’s presence at her half-sister Tendai’s 5th birthday party, they were disappointed a day before the said birthday as after reaching out, he was unapologetically told Bukata was on her way to the Copperbelt.  All efforts to bring were futile, he said.

To support these claims and that of Ms. Nakamba is not allowing Bukata to spend time with her father on holidays, weekends, and events for no apparent reason, Yo Maps has submitted WhatsApp conversations as evidence.

Diamond TV, in its report, also revealed that Yo Maps’ wife told the court that her husband has been a responsible father to Bukata and that she assists him in ensuring that all child support expenses are paid.

In a 2023 interview with Diamond TV’s ON THE TABLE,  Mwizukaji told Chimweka that there was no relationship between Yo Maps and Bukata. She further added that she had to take the singer to court in order for him to pay for child expenses such as tuition.

“If I’m going to be honest, there’s literally no relationship. They don’t spend time, they don’t talk, they don’t do anything. They just show up on birthdays, deliver the cakes, and disappear,” Mwizukanji to Chimweka.

In recent weeks, Bukata has been spending quality time with her half-sister Tendai, stepmother Kidist Kiffle, and her father, Yo Maps.

For their beloved fans, this revelation opens up curtains to what really happens behind the scenes despite the two moms  smiling on selfies and the father having play time with his daughters.

Will Yo Maps get primary custody of his daughter Bukata? Their followers are eagerly waiting to see the outcome of this child custody legal battle and to finally see this years long conflict put to rest.

DJ Sumbody’s Family Slams Reports Linking Him to Drug Crossfire

The family of late South African music producer and entrepreneur DJ Sumbody has come out strongly against recent media reports claiming he was killed in a crossfire related to a missing drug cargo.

In a joint statement issued, the Sefoka family and the Be A Sumbody Foundation condemned the claims and labelling it as “false, irresponsible, and defamatory.”

“A Malicious Fabrication” – Be A Sumbody Foundation Responds
According to the media statement, the Foundation and family believe the report was not only unfounded but a direct attack on DJ Sumbody’s reputation.

“The article is a malicious fabrication that seeks to tarnish the legacy of the late Oupa ‘DJ Sumbody’ Sefoka.
The narrative peddled by Sunday World is not only baseless and defamatory but also displays a blatant disregard for journalistic ethics and the dignity of a man who dedicated his life to uplifting communities through music and empowerment.”

The family distanced themselves and DJ Sumbody from any involvement in illicit activity, describing the claims as part of a “calculated smear campaign.”

“DJ Sumbody Was a Visionary Leader”
The Be A Sumbody Foundation emphasized the late DJ’s contributions to South Africa’s entertainment and business landscape, describing him as more than just an entertainer.

“DJ Sumbody was a visionary leader who used his platform to uplift others, create economic opportunities, and inspire positive change,” they said.

The statement reiterated that his legacy continues through the foundation’s work in entrepreneurship, education, and community development.

Call for Media Accountability
In closing, the family and foundation called on journalists to uphold truth and ethics.

“We call on members of the media to uphold the basic principles of truth, fairness, and accountability.
We urge the public to reject this false and harmful narrative and to stand with us in honouring the life of a man who gave so much to so many.”

DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa Sefoka, was gunned down in November 2022. His murder remains unsolved.

EU begins rollout of new AI rules with tech giants split on compliance

As major tech firms respond to the EU’s new AI code, Europe is taking its first big step towards regulating powerful artificial intelligence systems.

The rules come into effect on Saturday, kicking off a voluntary compliance period for general purpose AI (GPAI) models – the systems behind tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

The EU is one of the first regions in the world to set clear rules for how powerful AI systems should work.

The full AI Act is not expected before 2026, but the European Commission has released a Code of Practice to get companies working towards the new standards now.

The code is not legally binding, but it sets out clear expectations: explain how models work, be transparent about training data, assess risks such as bias or misinformation, and help users understand how the technology operates.

Google announced on Tuesday that it would sign the code. Other companies, including OpenAI and French startup Mistral, have already done so.

“We will join several other companies, including US model providers, in signing,” said Kent Walker, Google’s president of global affairs.

But he also raised concerns that too many rules could slow innovation. “Over-regulation risks slowing Europe’s development and deployment of AI,” he said.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is refusing to sign. It argues that the code is too vague and goes beyond what the AI Act will require.

“This code introduces a number of legal uncertainties for model developers, as well as measures which go far beyond the scope of the AI Act,” said Joel Kaplan, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, in a LinkedIn post.

Meta has had other run-ins with Brussels. It recently pulled all political ads from its European platforms rather than comply with new EU rules on online campaigning.

Some of Europe’s largest firms have also voiced concern. Earlier this month, companies including Airbus and Lufthansa asked Brussels to pause its AI plans, warning that the bloc risks falling behind in the global race for tech leadership.

Google echoed those concerns. “Departures from EU copyright law, steps that slow approvals, or requirements that expose trade secrets could chill European model development and deployment,” Walker said.

Despite pushback from industry and political pressure from abroad, the Commission is holding firm. The compliance period begins this weekend, showing that Brussels plans to press ahead with its approach to AI governance.

Hopewell Chin’ono Shares Update on Walter Mzembi’s Health

Former Foreign Minister Walter Mzembi is reportedly fighting for his life at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals after collapsing while in custody at Harare Remand Prison.

Award-winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono shared the update on Friday, 1 August 2025, stating that Mzembi is seriously ill with an enlarged heart and swollen feet. According to Chin’ono, prison officials confirmed that the former minister collapsed last week inside the remand facility.

Doctors treating him are said to be deeply concerned about the shortage of drugs and proper medical equipment, which is hampering their ability to give him adequate care.

“Doctors, concerned about the lack of drugs and equipment at Parirenyatwa, have informed me that Zimbabwe’s former Foreign Minister, Dr Walter Mzembi, is currently hospitalised there. He is seriously ill with an enlarged heart and swollen feet, and he also collapsed in prison last week, according to a prison official,” part of Chni’ono’s update reads.

Mzembi, who was arrested on 14 June after returning from Zambia, is facing charges related to his time as Tourism Minister over a decade ago. Before his arrest, he had spent seven years in exile, living between Eswatini, South Africa, and Zambia. He was also Robert Mugabe’s final Foreign Minister, serving right before the late president was ousted in the 2017 military coup led by Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Despite the severity of his illness, Chin’ono’s post has sparked mixed reactions online.

While some people expressed sympathy and called for better treatment, others were unmoved, viewing Mzembi’s condition as a result of the very system he once served.

Here are some of the reactions:

@Tawi0047Tawi:

In order to think he had repented enough, he was actually going back again to reconcile so that he could eat again? Being swallowed by his greediness? He is a ZANU PF man after all. He is the system, he is anti-people.”

@ibbosnr:

Do you people have no compassion whatsoever? Those individuals directly responsible will have to answer for this, in addition to the masters and mistresses of cruelty and sadism at the heart of this state.

@Madiba115:

Drugs are never found at this hospital. You get there, a note is left at the bes “relatives to buy, relatives to take samples to Lancet” Who is supplied with drugs from NatPharm? Private pharmacies and surgeries? So what is National about it?

@21gunzandroses:

What you do unto others will be done until you as well; there is no escape from karma, regardless of money or status, it’s only a matter of time. HH and Lungu scenario is a good case study.

South Africa’s Deputy President is under scrutiny after his wife received diamond gift from jailed gem dealer

South Africa’s Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, is under scrutiny after failing to declare a diamond gift received by his wife from a jailed gem dealer.

The controversy adds to mounting pressure on President Cyril Ramaphosa to address corruption within the ruling African National Congress (ANC), especially among key government figures.

Defending himself on Friday, August 1, Mashatile claimed he was unaware that the gem had come from Louis Liebenberg, a dealer currently imprisoned on charges including theft and money laundering. He said the diamond was handed over to authorities once the origin was discovered.

“I asked my office to check the present. We later found out the donor was someone we weren’t comfortable with,” he said. “The gift wasn’t for me; it was for my wife. But I don’t want her accepting anything from someone whose integrity is in question.”

On Thursday, Parliament’s ethics committee fined Mashatile 10,000 rands (approximately $550) for not disclosing the gift. The exact value of the diamond remains unknown.

President Ramaphosa, who has recently taken action against other officials accused of misconduct, stated that Mashatile must account for his actions. “We will need to wait for him to provide answers to all these questions,” he told reporters.

The deputy president is also facing criticism for not declaring a luxury home in Cape Town reportedly valued at over a million dollars. He denied ownership of the property, saying, “That house is owned by my son-in-law. So, what’s the problem?”

YO MAPS INSULTS A SOCIALITE WHO HAS ACCUSED HIM OF MAKING MWIZUKANJI SUFFER AND ONLY WANTING BUKATA AFTER HEARING HER SPEAK “FLUENT BRITISH ENGLISH

YO MAPS INSULTS A SOCIALITE WHO HAS ACCUSED HIM OF MAKING MWIZUKANJI SUFFER AND ONLY WANTING BUKATA AFTER HEARING HER SPEAK “FLUENT BRITISH ENGLISH

Opinions have been floating since the news of Zambian music superstar Yo Maps applying to the Lusaka Magistrates seeking primary custody of Bukata spread yesterday.

One opinion by a socialite named Steven Kaliangu struck a nerve, prompting the singer to forget about professionalism when responding as one insult slipped off his tongue.

Steven Kaliangu’s opinion started with him talking about how personal business shared on Facebook becomes everyone’s business, hence advising people to limit what they share.

The socialite then went ahead to talk about how baby mamas suffer a lot due to bad things said mostly by irresponsible baby daddies who before pregnancy chase pleasures but later fail to take responsibility – only to come in after the child grows wanting to be part of a life they did not want to be part of.

The socialite whose article featured Bukata’s picture explicitly sided with Mwizukanji in the custody battle.

He would then say, “Mwizukanji suffered a lot because of Maps for Bukata. She’s just potent. Otherwise, if it was others, they would have given up.”

He also claimed to have followed this drama since inception before saying Mwizukanji deserves custody. “Not what ba Mulenga is trying to do after bamvela ati Bukata can speak fluent British English,” he added.

The socialite went to the comment section to reaffirm his position as he said that regardless of the fact that Yo Maps pays child support, he still doesn’t deserve to have custody of Bukata.

In a comment radiating anger, Yo Maps responded to the said comment, “Steven Kaliangu, so we should just pay child support and school fees, but we should never have access to the child? Musula obe boi.”

The legal custody battle of Bukata is ongoing, but Yo Maps has a question, should he just pay child support without having access to his daughter?

Vice-president of France’s National Assembly files complaint for racial hatred

Nadège Abomangoli, vice-president of France’s National Assembly and an MP, has filed a complaint for racist and sexist hatred after receiving an anonymous letter questioning her legitimacy as a black woman in office – the latest in a string of such incidents targeting left-wing lawmakers of colour.

Abomangoli, who is an MP with the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) party, has filed a complaint with the Paris public prosecutor, her lawyer Chirinne Ardakani has said.

The complaint was made on the grounds of “insulting a person holding public authority, or alternatively, a public insult of a racist and sexist nature”, Ardakani said in a statement.

The letter arrived on 11 July at Abomangoli’s parliamentary office in the Palais Bourbon. It included what Ardakani described as “outrageous, openly racist and sexist remarks” aimed at her “in the exercise of her duties as Vice-President of the National Assembly and MP for the 10th constituency of Seine-Saint-Denis”.

According to the statement, the letter said: “First black woman vice-president – I get shivers of discomfort. Decolonialism does not make you legitimate” and “I am a white man. My surname Jourdain is far more deserving of your position than you are.” Another part read: “A black woman has no business in this role. Leave. You don’t belong here. Or anywhere.”

Such remarks, Ardakani said, “deny Ms Abomangoli the legitimacy to hold one of the highest institutional offices – that of Vice-President of the National Assembly – under a mandate granted by the French electorate, solely on the basis of her skin colour and gender”. She said the letter was “an attack on her dignity and the respect due to her office”.

The comments, she added, are “laden with xenophobic and misogynistic stereotypes” and are “unquestionably intended to denigrate and stigmatise the vice-president – both for who she is and what she represents”. ‘Broader and repeated pattern’

Abomangoli is not the only left-wing MP of colour to face such abuse. Ardakani said the message reflects “a broader and repeated pattern” of targeting black and minority lawmakers in France.

LFI MPs Carlos Martens Bilongo and Aly Diouara have both reported frequent racist threats since being elected.

On Tuesday, Diouara’s lawyer announced that seven people will go on trial in December at the Paris criminal court. The trial follows a complaint Diouara filed after being harassed online following his election.

In November 2022, a far-right MP from the National Rally party was suspended from parliament for 15 days after making racist remark about Bilongo during a legislative session.

In 2020, the ultra-conservative magazine Valeurs Actuelles published a fictional story portraying black MP Danièle Obono as a slave. The magazine later apologised but denied the accusation of racism, saying the article was “a work of fiction … but never nasty”.

The story drew condemnation from across the political spectrum, including President Emmanuel Macron.

In 2013, a far-right French newspaper caused uproar with a headline comparing the then-justice minister Christiane Taubira to a monkey. Taubira, who was born in French Guiana, chose not to file a legal complaint, but the incident led to protests against racism.-RFI

University of Edinburgh Opens up About its History of Involvement in Slavery in New Report

0

The report by University of Edinburgh brings to light a minimum of £30 million received over the years from donors involved with transatlantic slavery. Few days ago, I chanced upon the UK Guardian newspaper’s view on this issue, and agree with their statement that institutions with centuries of power and influence behind them have a responsibility to be open with their links to slavery. University of Edinburgh’s report on its history of involvement in slavery is indeed part of a belated reckoning by UK institutions with this shameful past, but it is better late than never. Recently, there was a publication regarding US institutions such as Harvard as well on their links to slavery. As academia begins to open up gradually to this reality, it is reasonable to believe it will go beyond academia in due time.

August 1st which is designated to be Emancipation Day commemorates abolishment of slavery by Britain. The nation is credited for its abolition campaigns but the wealth and power it accumulated came from slavery through its colonies. Just as other Western nations, the UK made great wealth from slavery too and did not decide to abolish it because they had develop a sense of morality but by factors in play which they could not control. One of these factors was the Black enslaved people’s zest for freedom – most notably the successful Haiti Slave Revolt. Haiti was at the time France’s most profitable colony due to the plantations run by slave labour. The slave revolt had such a knock-on effect in that era that made slavery abolition inevitable and Haiti became the first nation to abolition slavery. We are always reminded by history that oppressors never grant freedom on a silver platter and that only the oppressed will the true power to emancipate themselves.

The reality often overlooked is that slavery changed our world. It can be said that its impact on some lives had been enriching as equally as it has been devastating for others. And the sad part is that its effects linger on till this day.

While researching for my documentaries on slavery, I realised what transatlantic slavery did to Africa really goes deep. Diversity, considered strength became Africa’s curse. Since different cultures of Africa at the time saw themselves as separate units, conflicts were easily fuelled between these cultures in order to get the war captives sold as slaves for the new world plantation labour. This took a life of it’s own and became uncontrollable, entire communities were wiped off because they could not defend themselves against bigger rival states. Attack became a mode of defence for some of the smaller states too who began attacking other weaker communities for European weapons to defend themselves. It is sad to see African states haven’t learned from this past and have remained divided as ever to their own disadvantage. Making it easier to be used against each other again and exploited. When it is obvious they only stand a chance working effectively together.

Manpower was immense capital in the past, and young Africans were enslaved to produce wealth on a large scale for their Western “owners”. They benefitted from this whiles many lives were destroyed. The practice was draining African states of needed human resources to such a degree that even some local leaders who were also involved began to worry. The sick system of slavery became a monster on its own even at times turning against leaders not/no longer in favour of the practice. This was due to the opposition faced from elites (local and foreign) who benefited from the system of slavery, and will do anything to keep it going for their parochial interest. We can notice parallels of this in our modern societies – those who benefit from the sick systems now do everything to maintain them.

The world needs face up to the painful history of transatlantic slavery. Millions of human lives were lost due to this, and it made the Western world the dominant power it is today. At what cost? African lives. If this is what it means to be great, no wonder the world is such a mess. Africa on the other hand was robbed of its human capital for centuries setting it back several years.

The trauma, distrust, power structures, and social disintegration left behind by slavery still lives on in African societies. The same collaboration that existed between foreign and local players in that era is still at play today with the current African political establishment as present day participants. African states have now been hijacked by self-seeking politicians similar to those past elites who benefited from the slave trade. They only come to power to serve their own interest and not the nation’s interest. Making it hard for the nation and its people to make meaningful progress. Politics has become a business venture, individuals go into it to be rich. Akin to a shady money doubling scheme reserved mainly for the rich to invest in order to increase their wealth exponentially at the expense of the people. The nation is lucrative for only family, friends and political associates. The rest of the masses are left on their own to feed from the crumbs left over from their table. They still run the resources of their countries to the benefit of other foreign nations instead. Made possible by the one-sided agreements often sealed by corruption. One might ask; Do we really have countries now? Nations at the mercy of thieves.

The West continues to reap the dividends of the destruction caused by chattel slavery and colonialism while the vast majority of Africans and the diaspora suffer the consequences in many ways, including unfair systems that end up also destructive to the planet. By coming to terms with the scale of these historical injustices, maybe then can we start a meaningful conversation and begin to heal our world.

South Sudan turns US deportations to its diplomatic advantage

0

South Sudan has reportedly signalled a willingness to accept more deportees from the United States – in a move that could serve as diplomatic leverage in its tense relationship with Washington.

Officials in Juba have opened the door to receiving more migrants who are being expelled from the US under newly expanded deportation powers, according to a report published this week by Politico.

Many of the deportees are not of South Sudanese origin.

In return, it reportedly hopes to see a softening of US sanctions and improved economic cooperation.

Last week, South Sudan took in eight deportees, including only one of its own nationals, following a six-week legal dispute in the US.

The others – originating from countries such as Vietnam, Cuba, and Myanmar– were rejected by their home governments and ultimately rerouted to South Sudan via Djibouti, under a new US Supreme Court ruling allowing third-country deportations.

US to revoke all visas for South Sudanese amid row over repatriations Political trade-off

In private diplomatic communications seen by Politico, South Sudan has linked its cooperation on deportations to several key demands: lifting a travel ban on its citizens, unfreezing a New York-based bank account, encouraging US investment in mining and energy sectors, and – most controversially – removing sanctions on high-ranking officials such as Benjamin Bol Mel, now South Sudan’s second vice-president.

Juba is also pressing Washington to take a more conciliatory stance on Riek Machar, the country’s first vice-president, currently underhouse arrest amid accusations of plotting a rebellion ahead of the 2026 elections.

The US has called for Machar’s immediate release and a return to direct political dialogue.

The proposed deal highlights the geopolitical trade-offs in US immigration policy.

As Politico puts it, some nations see “aggressive US immigration policy as an opportunity to push their own demands”.

South Sudan is not alone – similar arrangements are being explored with Eswatini and Rwanda, with the US reportedly in talks with up to 15 African nations.

Rwanda in ‘initial’ talks to receive migrants deported from the US

Meanwhile, revelations of a $500,000 contract between Juba and the Washington-based lobbying firm Scribe Strategies & Advisors – aimed at overturning the travel ban and mending bilateral ties – have triggered backlash at home.

Critics, including civil society leader Edmund Yakani, have demanded transparency over the motivations and implications of accepting deportees with no ties to South Sudan.-RFI

Report reveals multi-million dollar scheme to sell access to Trump

Explosive new financial disclosures reveal how wealthy elites are literally buying face time with Donald Trump, according to a New York Times report Saturday.

A figures, shared in filings by MAGA Inc., a super PAC funding much of Donald Trump’s political machine, exposes a stunning pay-to-play scheme operating at the highest levels of American government. The donor list reads like a who’s who of crypto moguls, influence peddlers, and favor-seekers—all willing to write massive checks for a seat at Trump’s table, the Times reported.

MAGA Inc. raked in a jaw-dropping $177 million in just the first half of 2025, with many top donors scoring coveted invitations to exclusive dinners at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

Eric Schiermeyer, a crypto entrepreneur, ponied up $1 million for a Mar-a-Lago dinner in March where he pitched a government-backed cryptocurrency called “USA Token” that would be distributed to every American—with his company handling the lucrative contract, the report stated.

“I was able to say my piece, and the idea is clearly making the rounds, so mission accomplished from my view,” Schiermeyer boasted to the Times.

The donor roster also features several individuals who mysteriously landed plum administration appointments shortly after cutting checks. Surgeon Anjani Sinha donated $1 million in February and was promptly nominated as ambassador to Singapore—though his confirmation hearing saw Sinha struggling to answer basic questions about the country he was supposed to represent.

Energy investor Cody Campbell paid $500,000 and secured a spot on the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, while finance executive Josh Lobel bought his way onto the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board for $250,000.

Perhaps most disturbing is the case of Elizabeth Fago, who contributed $1 million and attended an April dinner with Trump. Just three weeks later, her son Paul Walczak—a healthcare executive who had pleaded guilty to tax fraud—received a presidential pardon.

An unnamed White House official claimed the pardon wasn’t about the money: “He spoke directly to a mother who pleaded for her son, and when you’re talking to a mother pleading for her son, that’s a pretty powerful thing,” the official told the Times.

A MAGA Inc. spokesperson told the Times, “President Trump values his supporters and donors, but unlike politicians before him, he cannot be bought and works toward the best interest of the country.”

Business leaders warn of Trump-induced economic crash

As fallout continues from the latest jobs report that showed a dramatic slowdown in job growth, business leaders are warning that the current market slowdown is “only the beginning,” and that the impacts of President Donald Trump’s tariffs are already well underway, Politico reported Friday.

“Inflation and price increases are coming,” said Greg Ahearn, president and CEO of the Toy Association, speaking with Politico. “Layoffs have already been occurring, and supply is going to be lower as we head into the holiday season. These are all happening.”

Trump unveiled the latest tariff rates on Thursday, set to go into effect on Aug. 7, with tariff rates as high as 50% on major trading partners. Among countries hit with the top rate of 50% is Brazil, with imported Brazilian coffee representing 33% of all coffee consumption in the United States.

“I think most people believe wholeheartedly that the impact of these tariffs is going to be felt in the months ahead,” Ahearn said. “And the reason why is that production and manufacturing and the goods as they flow through the supply chain takes time.”

Another cause for concern among business leaders was the unpredictable nature of the tariffs, with among the United States’ largest trading partners – Canada, China and Mexico – still negotiating with Trump as of Saturday, just days before tariffs are set to take effect.

Doubt also exists among business leaders regarding countries that Trump has already reached a trade agreement with, many of which are only verbal or exist solely on a single letter, with no clear commitments from both parties.

“If you’re a business and you’ve got global supply chains and you’ve got to make investments, it really matters that some countries are still in negotiations and certain countries are not in negotiations,” said Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic adviser at the financial services company Allianz, speaking with Politico.

“Where are Mexico and Canada gonna end up? We seem to know Vietnam, but do we really know Vietnam? It’s not clear yet.”

Insider tells of frantic Trump call after latest Epstein accusation

0

President Donald Trump called a friend within the last two days to vent about rumors that he ordered Jeffrey Epstein killed in his jail cell, his biographer said Saturday.

Michael Wolff, who wrote the Trump White House exposé “Fire and Fury,” said on the Daily Beast’s podcast that he’d spoken to the person who received the call.

“Yesterday, I had a conversation with someone who talks to Trump frequently. And this person had a conversation with Trump in the last 48—slightly, possibly more—hours, and it kind of gave me a chill,” Wolff said.

“So Trump called up this person and said, ‘They say I killed Epstein. I didn’t have Epstein killed,’ And then this person said, ‘Well, do you think he was killed?’ And then Trump said, ‘A lot of people wanted him dead.’”

Many conspiracy theorists believe that Epstein, who committed suicide in his cell before his trial for multiple sex crimes including trafficking underage girls, was deliberately killed.

It ties into the belief that Epstein had information that would link many powerful people to his sick antics.

Last month, Trump’s Attorney General Pam Bondi sparked outrage among his MAGA base when she announced that Epstein did die of suicide and that he left behind no files identifying associates.

Three Arrested for Alleged Plot to Kill Inkosi ya Makosi M’mbelwa V

Police in Mzimba have arrested Masabani Jere, aged 63, along with Smart Nyirenda (42) and Muva Nkhata (54), for allegedly conspiring to assassinate Inkosi ya Makosi M’mbelwa V, the Paramount Chief of the Ngoni people.

According to Maria Banda, Mzimba Police Spokesperson, the trio was apprehended following an intelligence-led operation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which led to the recovery of a revolver and ammunition at Jere’s residence. Police suspect Jere, a key figure in the ongoing Inkosi Mzikubola chieftaincy dispute, to be the mastermind behind the plot.

Banda confirmed that the suspects appeared in court today and have been charged with conspiring to commit a felony, while Jere faces an additional charge of illegal possession of a firearm.

She added that the motive behind the conspiracy remains unclear, but the suspects are alleged to have recruited another individual to carry out the attack.

All three are currently remanded at Mzimba Prison as police investigations continue.

Half of Young Malawians Unemployed, Many Eyeing Emigration – Afrobarometer Survey

A new Afrobarometer survey has revealed alarming levels of youth unemployment in Malawi, with half of the country’s young population out of work and many contemplating emigration in search of better opportunities.

The report shows that 53% of Malawians aged 18 to 35 are unemployed but actively seeking jobs. Only 3% are in full-time employment, while 5% work part-time.

Faced with limited job prospects, a majority—61%—say they would prefer to start their own business, while 18% expressed interest in public sector employment.

The survey also exposes a growing trend among the youth to consider leaving the country. One in two young Malawians have thought about emigrating, driven largely by economic hardship. Of those considering migration, 56% are motivated by the search for better job opportunities, and 33% by the desire to escape poverty.

South African man sentenced to life imprisonment for hacking his girlfriend to d3ath

A South African man, Thabo Samuel Segale, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal m8rder of his 24-year-old girlfriend, Amogelang Princess Mpete.

The sentence was handed down by the Mogwase Regional Court on North West on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in a statement said the court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

The incident occurred on the evening of 10 July 2019, at the deceased’s parental home. Evidence presented in court revealed that Segale and Mpete were in a romantic relationship.

That evening, Segale visited her home, where they were seated in the dining room with Mpete’s seven-year-old child and her 12-year-old sibling.

Mpete reportedly asked Segale to leave as it was late and the family needed to sleep.

Enraged by suspicions of infidelity, Segale’s behaviour became erratic and violent. He proceeded to fetch a pickaxe from another room and viciously attacked Mpete in full view of the children.

She attempted to flee with the children to another room but was unsuccessful. Eventually, she managed to escape through a window, but Segale chased her outside and struck her on the head with the axe, fatally wounding her. He then fled the scene.

Police were called to the scene, and a m8rder case was opened. Segale was arrested the following day, denied bail, and remained in custody until the finalisation of the case. He pleaded guilty to the charge of m8rder.

During sentencing proceedings, the State submitted a Victim Impact Statement (VIS) compiled with the assistance of Court Preparation Officer, Gift Tapa, detailing the severe emotional and psychological trauma suffered by the two children who witnessed the attack.

In aggravation of sentence, Advocate Sicelo Moselakgomo described the attack as a savage and premeditated act, committed in a manner that “shocks the conscience of any civilized society.”

He stressed the need for a sentence that not only reflects public outrage but also affirms the sanctity of life and ensures public protection.

The court concurred, noting the serious and prevalent nature of such crimes within the jurisdiction, and accordingly sentenced Segale to life imprisonment, while also declaring him unfit to possess a firearm.

Welcoming the outcome, Dr Rachel Makhari, Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, commended the collaborative efforts of the South African Police Service, the prosecution team, and all stakeholders involved.

She emphasised that the outcome serves as a strong deterrent to perpetrators of gender-based violence, and reaffirms the NPA’s commitment to securing justice for victims of such heinous crimes

Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe has been sentenced to 12 years of house arrest

Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe has been sentenced to 12 years of house arrest after being found guilty of procedural fraud and witness bribery, making him the first former president in the country’s history to face a criminal conviction.

The ruling was delivered by Judge Sandra Heredia of Bogotá’s 44th Criminal Court on Friday, four days after she declared Uribe guilty of the charges. He was acquitted on a separate count of allegedly bribing a prosecutor.

Uribe, 73, who served as president from 2002 to 2010, has denied any wrongdoing. His defense has announced plans to appeal the verdict.

The case stems from a legal battle that began in 2012 when Uribe accused Senator Iván Cepeda of attempting to link him to the creation of a paramilitary group. Cepeda denied the accusation. In a twist, the Colombian Supreme Court launched an investigation in 2018 into Uribe for alleged witness tampering.

After years of legal proceedings, the Colombian Prosecutor’s Office formally charged Uribe in May 2024 with procedural fraud, bribery in criminal proceedings, and bribery. His trial lasted 67 days before concluding this week.

Uribe’s claims of innocence were echoed by political allies, including former President Iván Duque and other members of the opposition. Meanwhile, figures aligned with the current government hailed the ruling as a victory for justice.

Senator Cepeda, who has been at the center of the case, welcomed the outcome but noted that legal steps remain. “There is still a long way to go,” he said.

Rapper Tory Lanez must pay Megan Thee Stallion’s legal fees after mocking her lawyer

Tory Lanez has been ordered by a Florida federal judge to cover Megan Thee Stallion’s legal fees following his misconduct during a deposition in her defamation lawsuit against blogger Milagro Gramz.

The April 9 deposition, conducted via Zoom from prison, reportedly turned chaotic as Lanez mocked and insulted Megan’s lawyer, interrupted questioning, and refused to answer basic inquiries. His behavior led the court to issue sanctions and require him to pay attorney fees related to that session.

According to court documents and AllHipHop reports, Lanez missed an April 30 deadline to explain why he shouldn’t be held in contempt. As a result, the judge not only imposed financial penalties but also ruled that a magistrate judge will oversee all future depositions to maintain order. Megan’s legal team is now seeking the appointment of a special master—also at Lanez’s expense—to supervise any upcoming testimonies.

This legal setback is part of Megan Thee Stallion’s broader defamation case against Milagro Gramz, whom she accuses of spreading damaging and false information about her mental health, drug use, and personal life—allegedly with the involvement of Lanez and his father.

In a related ruling, Gramz was previously fined $5,000 for delaying access to her social media accounts during a court-mandated forensic investigation.

The ongoing court battle stems from the fallout of the 2020 shooting incident in which Megan was injured and Lanez was convicted. The latest decision adds to the Canadian rapper’s growing list of legal troubles.

Tennis legend Novak Djokovic has officially become a co-owner of French football club Le Mans FC

Tennis legend, Novak Djokovic has officially become a co-owner of French football club Le Mans FC, newly promoted to Ligue 2.

The club announced the high-profile acquisition on Friday, revealing that Djokovic’s investment comes as part of a broader group of stakeholders that includes former Formula 1 drivers Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen.

The strategic investment is spearheaded by OutField, a Brazilian-led international consortium co-founded by Pedro Oliveira. Other key figures involved include Georgios Frangulis, CEO of the global health-food brand OakBerry.

In a statement, Le Mans FC described Djokovic as “the most successful player in history,” adding that his mental strength, competitive mindset, and unique approach to excellence will offer “considerable added value” to the club’s culture and vision.

The club also noted the significance of bringing in Massa and Magnussen — veterans with 15 and 10 seasons in F1 respectively, highlighting their role in helping to bridge the worlds of football and motorsport, a dynamic the club says is “a distinctive strength of the Le Mans brand.”

This marks Djokovic’s latest off-court venture, as he continues to diversify his interests in the world of sports and business.

Le Mans FC, which has had a turbulent history in French football, is set to kick off its Ligue 2 campaign on August 9 with an away match against Guingamp.

Olympic athlete Sha’Carri Richardson arrested over alleged domestic v!olence

0

Olympic sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was reportedly arrested on Sunday, July 28, at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, USA following an alleged domestic violence incident involving her boyfriend and fellow sprinter, Christian Coleman.

According to The Athletic, the 25-year-old was taken into custody after a confrontation at a TSA security checkpoint, where surveillance footage reportedly showed Richardson shoving Coleman multiple times as he attempted to walk away. She was arrested for fourth-degree domestic violence assault.

Coleman ultimately did not press charges and “declined to be a victim,” according to the report.

Richardson was held at the SCORE South Correctional Facility in Des Moines, Washington, for nearly 19 hours before being released on Monday, official records show.

The incident comes as both athletes are competing in the 2025 U.S. Track and Field Championships. Richardson clocked a time of 11.07 seconds in the preliminary round of the women’s 100-meter race on Thursday, advancing to the semifinals. As the defending champion in the event, she already holds a bye to the upcoming World Championships.

Richardson and Coleman have reportedly been in a relationship for over two years, though they only made it public in February.

This is not the first time Richardson has made headlines outside the track. In 2023, she was removed from an American Airlines flight following an argument with a flight attendant. In a series of Instagram stories at the time, she claimed she was unfairly targeted during the interaction, which began when the attendant asked her to end a phone call and demanded to see that her phone was in airplane mode.

As of now, Richardson has not issued a public statement regarding the latest incident

Fake doctor accused of causing the deaths of multiple patients sentenced

A 27-year-old man in Uganda has been sentenced to two years in prison after he impersonated a doctor and killed three patients from botched surgeries that he performed.

Per the Monitor, Francis Taulula was convicted after he pleaded guilty to forgery, uttering false documents, and obtaining registration by false pretence. Taulula was handed the punishment after he reached a plea bargain which saw him admitting to the crimes.

During his appearance in court, Taulula confessed to doctoring academic documents to secure work in the health system under false pretenses.

“By the plea bargain agreement dated July 29, 2025, entered between the state, represented by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and the convict, which plea bargain agreement has been endorsed by this court, I hereby sentence the convict,” the trial Chief Magistrate, Ronald Kayizzi, said.

Besides his prison sentence, Taulula must also reimburse the government over $5,000 that was paid to him during the period he falsely worked as an intern at a hospital in the East African nation. The money, which he received as a monthly allowance, is to be refunded after his release and in two years.

Taulula is said to have used false documents to gain internships and perform surgeries. He also attempted to receive full certification as a doctor by submitting false documentation.

“He used forged degree certificates and transcripts from Mount Kenya University and even impersonated a Gulu University student. This was not only a violation of the law, it cost lives,” the chief magistrate said.

Taulula is said to have performed three botched surgeries that took the lives of three patients, identified as Harriet Atugonza, Scovia Atuhura, and Gladys Pifua.

“Some of these procedures were conducted without specialist supervision. Atuhura bled to death after a negligent intervention. Pifua died from a post- surgery infection, while Atugonza suffered aspiration during an operation, deaths that were all preventable,” Prosecution led by Ms Terpista Nam said, per the Monitor.

Chief Magistrate Kayizzi also said that Taulula had to be punished in order to serve as a deterrent to others.

“He impersonated a doctor, operated on innocent patients and left behind a trail of pain and grief. This court must send a strong signal that such deception, especially in the medical field, cannot go unpunished,” said Chief Magistrate Kayizzi.

DA Warns Johannesburg Unready for G20 Summit

Johannesburg is set to make history as the first African city to host the G20 Summit on 22-23 November 2025, bringing together leaders of the world’s major economies. However, with less than three months to go, the Democratic Alliance (DA), a key opposition party in Gauteng province, has raised serious concerns about the city’s readiness for this global event.

At a media briefing on Thursday, DA provincial leader Solly Msimanga highlighted a range of unresolved issues plaguing Johannesburg. “Streetlights are still a mess, potholes everywhere, we still have streets that are littered and those that have freshwater and sewer flowing. We still have hijacked buildings and issues of security,” Msimanga said. He questioned the city’s ability to present itself as a “world-class African city” to international delegates.

The DA’s concerns echo earlier warnings from local voices. In March 2025, President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed disappointment with Johannesburg’s state, urging officials to address crumbling infrastructure, water and electricity outages, and rampant crime. Posts on X have also reflected public frustration, with users describing the city as “filthy, broken, and unsafe” and questioning its suitability to host the summit. Some have even called for the event to be relocated to Cape Town, which is perceived as better managed under DA governance.

Despite these challenges, the South African government and local partners like Jozi My Jozi (JMJ) remain optimistic. A budget of R691 million (approximately $38.7 million) has been allocated for summit preparations, with efforts underway to improve key routes and infrastructure. JMJ, in collaboration with the Gauteng Provincial Government and the City of Johannesburg, is working to showcase the city’s cultural heritage and promote sustainable practices during the event.

The G20 Summit, themed “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” is a critical platform for South Africa to advocate for African development and global economic cooperation. However, the DA’s warnings highlight the urgent need for Johannesburg to address its infrastructure and safety issues to ensure a successful event that reflects positively on the city and the continent.

Justin Timberlake Reveals Lyme Disease After Tour Criticism

Justin Timberlake has disclosed that he has been battling Lyme disease, following criticism from some fans over his “low energy” performances during his recent ‘Forget Tomorrow World Tour’. The 44-year-old singer, who completed 121 shows, shared his diagnosis on Instagram, explaining the toll the condition took on him.

Lyme disease, caused by bacteria transmitted through tick bites, can lead to fatigue, nerve pain, and joint discomfort, according to Mediclinic. Timberlake said the diagnosis helped him understand the physical and mental challenges he faced on stage. “I was shocked for sure. But, at least I could understand why I would be onstage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or just feeling crazy fatigue,” he wrote.

The tour faced challenges, including cancellations in February and December 2024 due to health issues, with Timberlake citing the flu for one abrupt cancellation. Fans in Romania and Ireland expressed disappointment, with some, like TikTok user @amelissaofficial, calling his performances “sub-par” and criticising his stage presence

Despite the setbacks, Justin Timberlake said performing brought him joy that outweighed the physical strain. He expressed gratitude to his fans, family, and wife Jessica Biel, who supported him alongside their children, Silas and Phineas. Other celebrities, including Alexis Ohanian, Bella Hadid, and Avril Lavigne, have also been diagnosed with Lyme disease.

Timberlake’s revelation underscores the importance of empathy, as he noted: “You never know what someone is going through.”

Zelensky Demands Regime Change in Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on allies to push for “regime change” in Russia following a deadly overnight attack on Kyiv that killed seven people, including a six-year-old boy. The Russian drone and missile strikes reduced parts of a nine-storey apartment block in the capital’s western suburbs to rubble, wounding dozens, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Speaking virtually at a conference marking 50 years since the Helsinki Accords, Zelensky warned that without regime change in Moscow, Russia would continue to destabilise neighbouring countries even after the war ends. “If the world doesn’t aim to change the regime in Russia, Moscow will still try to destabilise,” he said.

The attack involved over 300 drones and eight cruise missiles, with Kyiv as the primary target, Ukraine’s air force reported. One missile tore through a residential building, leaving debris and personal belongings scattered, as rescuers searched the wreckage. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, confirmed the deaths, noting the young boy died in an ambulance.

Meanwhile, Moscow claimed to have captured Chasiv Yar, a strategically vital town in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, a claim denied by Ukrainian forces. A Ukrainian army spokesperson called Russia’s statement “lies,” asserting control over the town. Chasiv Yar’s capture would aid Russia’s advance toward key Ukrainian strongholds like Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, as Russia prioritises control of Donetsk, which it claimed in 2022.

The strikes follow US President Donald Trump’s recent ultimatum for Russia to halt its nearly three-and-a-half-year invasion within 10 days or face sanctions. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga urged stronger measures, stating on X that it was time to make Russia “feel the pain and consequences” of its actions.

Russia, which denies targeting civilians, has not responded to the Kyiv strike or Zelensky’s remarks. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously called for Zelensky’s removal, questioning his legitimacy.

WHAT IS THE OBSESSION WITH WANTING TO SEE THE BODY OF PRESIDENT EDGAR C LUNGU- UMODZI KUM’MAWA

WHAT IS THE OBSESSION WITH WANTING TO SEE THE BODY OF PRESIDENT EDGAR C LUNGU

KUM’MAWA DEVELOPMENT COALITION aka UMODZI KUM’MAWA is increasingly getting worried and concerned regards the issue of our late 6th President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu who is an Easterner.

We were reluctant to comment on this matter because we know the matter is before the South African High Court in Pretoria and we hoped that everyone will wait for the courts guide regards the way forward and bring settlement and end to the matter.

However, Government’s continued change of position on this matter has worried us and we thought of putting a clear and categorical stance forthwith as custodians of the interests of the people of Eastern Province.

Firstly, why has Government insisted on wanting to see the body,  Yet the President has stated on several times that he knew and confirmed the death of Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu the very morning he died in South Africa. What’s the purpose of sending people to go and view the body? Is this some sort of diabolical actions? Could there be some sort of witchcraft involved? In our dialect we ask, mulibe umfwiti umu?

The other concern is, why has President Hichilema sent a delegation without consulting stakeholders from Eastern Province or better still involve our Traditional leadership from the province knowing too well that Edgar comes from Eastern Province? What are they hiding? Does it mean that Edgar Lungu has no parents? We ask this due to the fact that there has been no transparency whatsoever.

We are concerned as a Province because this is not the first time this is happening to the peole of Eastern Province.  First it was the late Suzgo Nyika where Government sent authorities to go and exhume his body. This is so worrying and we feel targeted as a Province.

In our view, Government should have allowed the court process to finish and allow it to give us the people a direction against forcing unhead of things like wanting to see the body. We all know that the funeral rights are an exclusive right for the family in this case the Lungu family and no third party should  impose themselves in anyway for any reason, diabolical or otherwise.

We therefore appeal to President Hakainde Hichilema and Government to leave the Lungu family alone to mourn their departed one. And we ask them to respect the wishes of the former Head of State regards how he wished to be burried.

We want also to put it on record that as people of Eastern Province, we wholly and steadfastly so, stand with the Lungu family and say hands off the body of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

ACC A TOOTHLESS  ‘BULLDOG’ – KALABA

ACC A TOOTHLESS  ‘BULLDOG’ – KALABA

THE Anti-Corruption Commission is a toothless institution that is incapable of fighting corruption because it is under the supervision of a leader, President Hakainde Hichilema who has no desire to fight the scourge other then use it as a tool for political vengeance against his political foes, Harry Kalaba has said.

Mr Kalaba, the leader of Citizens First says it is not surprising that the ACC is refusing to name and shame corrupt Ministers in the UPND administration because the management at the institution is scared of losing their jobs.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, Mr Kalaba said the ACC had lost its credibility because it had opted to protect politically connected individuals instead of serving the interests of the public.

“The ACC is afraid of President Hakainde Hichilema. They cannot name the corrupt ministers because they know that if they do, they will be fired. They are just watching corruption happening in broad daylight,” he said.

Mr Kalaba, who served as Foreign Affairs Minister under the Patriotic Front administration before resigning on grounds of corruption in government, said it was ironic that an institution mandated to fight graft was now acting as a shield for suspected plunderers and looters.

He said the ACC’s failure to act decisively was undermining public confidence in the fight against corruption.

“How can we fight corruption when the people entrusted to lead that fight are compromised? We are losing billions of Kwacha through corrupt procurement deals and abuse of office, yet no one is being held accountable,” he said.

Mr Kalaba challenged the ACC to publish the names of ministers under investigation if it wanted to restore public trust.

Last year, the ACC revealed that several serving ministers in the UPND administration were under investigation but refused to name them, citing fears that doing so could compromise ongoing inquiries.

But Mr Kalaba has insisted that the failure by ACC to name and shame corrupt Ministers was just an excuse, saying Zambians deserve to know who is plundering public resources.

“This is taxpayers’ money. The people have a right to know who is stealing from them,” he said.

AIPAC Calls on President Hichilema to Suspend Ministers and Solicitor

AIPAC Calls on President Hichilema to Suspend Ministers and Solicitor General Under Investigation

2 August, 2025

The Action Institute for Policy Analysis Centre (AIPAC) appreciates and welcomes the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) response on its investigations into the Solicitor General and some unnamed Cabinet Ministers over corruption allegations. AIPAC is appealing to President Hakainde Hichilema to put those Ministers on leave and the Solicitor General to facilitate smooth investigations.

While in Opposition, His Excellency President Hichilema promised Zambians that individuals appearing before law enforcement agencies over corruption allegations should be suspended to allow the agencies to do their jobs without intimidation and to enable whistleblowers to come forward and provide evidence.

Furthermore, AIPAC notes that it is a widely accepted international best practice and a principle of good governance and accountability that individuals holding public offices who are under investigation by law enforcement agencies should be removed or suspended from their positions to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of the investigative process.

This approach is essential for upholding the rule of law, preventing potential interference with investigations, and maintaining public trust in institutions.

AIPAC is concerned that the fight against corruption efforts in Zambia has seen a worrying trend, with numbers indicating a drop in effectiveness. According to recent reports, corruption remains a significant challenge, with many Zambians expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s efforts to combat it.

For instance, a recent survey by Afrobarometer revealed that 63% of Zambians believe that the government is handling the fight against corruption poorly. It is against this backdrop that AIPAC believes that decisive action is needed to demonstrate the government’s commitment to fighting corruption.

The suspension of the Solicitor General and Cabinet Ministers under investigation would be a crucial step in this direction. By taking such action, President Hichilema can reassure Zambians that his administration is serious about fighting corruption and upholding the rule of law.

AIPAC believes that this move would be in line with the President’s previous statements and would help to restore public trust in the government’s anti-corruption efforts.

It is imperative that the fight against corruption is accompanied by fact-based evidence of dropping those who are committing corruption in this administration. The public expects tangible results and concrete actions, not just rhetoric. AIPAC urges President Hichilema to take bold steps to address corruption and ensure that those implicated in corruption scandals are held accountable.

The President must restore donor and public confidence towards his stance on the fight against corruption. Corruption is a cancer that has plagued our nation for far too long, and it is high time it is fought to the letter. AIPAC believes that with decisive action, Zambia can make significant strides in combating corruption and promoting good governance.

YOUTHFUL LEADERSHIP HAILED AS MP ANNOUNCES PRESIDENTIAL BID

YOUTHFUL LEADERSHIP HAILED AS MP ANNOUNCES PRESIDENTIAL BID

Lusaka… Saturday August 2, 2025 – Aspiring Lusaka Mayor Simon Mulenga Mwila has applauded Hon. Binwell Mpundu, Independent Member of Parliament for Nkana, for a courageous decision to contest the 2026 presidential elections.

In a public statement, Mwila commended Hon. Mpundu for launching his campaign under the Ichabaiche movement, saying the move signaled more than just a personal ambition — it represented a bold call for generational change and the rise of youthful leadership in Zambia.

He expressed enthusiasm over the growing involvement of young leaders in the country’s political landscape, describing it as a refreshing shift from traditional norms.

Mr. Mwila stated that the long-held belief that “youth are the leaders of tomorrow” was outdated, asserting instead that young people are “stakeholders of now” whose voices and energy must be recognized and counted in today’s governance.

Addressing Hon. Mpundu directly in his message, Mwila praised the MP’s decision as visionary and urged him not to be distracted by criticism.

He emphasized that history is shaped by those who act with courage rather than hesitation, suggesting that leadership demands conviction and a strong sense of duty –qualities he believes Mpundu has already demonstrated.

Mr. Mwila further stated that Zambia was ready for fresh ideas and forward-thinking leadership, stressing the need for a new generation to take its rightful place at the national decision-making table.

EMERGENCY TARIFF RENEWAL WORRIES MANUFACTURERS

EMERGENCY TARIFF RENEWAL WORRIES MANUFACTURERS

The Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) has expressed worry over the recent renewal of emergency electricity tariffs, describing the move as unsettling and poorly timed for the industrial sector.

ZAM President Ashu Sagar stated that the decision—made without consultation—has disrupted pricing structures for manufacturers already grappling with high production costs and energy insecurity.

He said the tariff, initially introduced to cover imported power, appears no longer justified given improvements in hydroelectric generation and the rollout of solar installations.

Mr. Sagar said the lack of dialogue and transparency surrounding the renewal has shaken business confidence, particularly among manufacturers who rely heavily on consistent energy pricing to maintain operations.

He urged the Energy Regulation Board and ZESCO to engage more proactively with industry stakeholders before implementing such cost-altering measures, warning that sudden changes “further erode margins and weaken productivity.”

Court finds head teacher who gambled away  social cash transfer money guilty

A HEAD teacher in Mongu has been found guilty of theft after he squandered government funds meant for Social Cash Transfer beneficiaries on online sports betting.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/199n8MCKW7/?mibextid=oFDknk

Ernest Chilonga aged 42, who served as head teacher at Mulwa Primary School, was charged with one count of Theft by Public Servant contrary to Sections 272 and 277 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

According to court proceedings, Chilonga was appointed Pay Point manager for the Social Cash Transfer programme in September 2024.

On September 26, he withdrew K68,320 from Zambia National Commercial Bank of which K64,000 was for distribution to vulnerable households under the SCT programme, while K4,320 was his official allowance.

Instead of returning to school to carry out the disbursement, Chilonga booked into a lodge and began betting the government money through an online sports betting platform.

Within days, all the K64,000 had been lost.

He resurfaced on October 7, summoned the beneficiaries to the school, and claimed that he had forgotten the bag containing the money at home.

Moments later, he returned and told the gathering that his house had been broken into and the bag containing the funds had been stolen.

Following a full trial, which involved testimonies from five witnesses, Mongu Magistrate Maloti Phiri found Chilonga guilty on July 29, 2025.

The case was prosecuted by senior public prosecutor Grace Mulafulafu and sentencing has been reserved for August 8, 2025.

‘Struggling’ Americans are skipping meals — and blaming Trump: ‘shocking’ poll

With inflation and unemployment rising, a majority of Americans say President Donald Trump is to blame for increased prices and the high cost of living, as many turn to credit cards and other high-interest vehicles to pay for their purchases, a new poll finds. Some are skipping meals just to make ends meet, some spend time daily worrying about how they are going to pay their bills, and many are forced to turn to friends and family for financial support.

“American families are struggling financially, and 6 in 10 place blame on Donald Trump for driving up their cost of living,” reported progressive think tank The Century Foundation, with data from a Morning Consult poll that it sponsored. “More than half believe that billionaires, corporations, and congressional Republicans have made their lives harder,” while the “majority of voters feel the Trump administration’s actions are making their problems and anxieties worse—not better.”

Overall, a staggering four out of five Americans (83%) are concerned about the cost of groceries, including 46% who say they are “very concerned.”

Almost half (47%) worry about being able to pay their rent or mortgage, almost one in four say it would be difficult to pay for an unexpected home or medical emergency—and many would have trouble paying even a $500 expense.

“This financial insecurity is widespread across demographic and income groups—although it is more pronounced among groups such as younger Americans, Americans of color, women, and lower-income Americans,” the report stated.

For many Americans, anxiety about money is a daily experience, and a large majority worry that things are going to get worse.

“A shocking 1 in 4 Americans (24 percent) say they spend at least three hours on a typical day worrying about their finances and ability to afford basic necessities. More than 4 in 10 spend at least one hour per day,” according to the report. “While low- and middle-income Americans express the strongest financial concerns, one-third of those with incomes above $100,000 also spend at least an hour concerned about their finances on a typical day.”

President Donald Trump’s tariffs are a major concern for many Americans as well.

49% believe Trump’s tariffs will make the cost of goods made overseas more expensive, and nearly seven in ten say they believe Trump’s tariffs will increase prices.

The Century Foundation published a video detailing its findings.

Records buried on why Elon Musk sicced called the police on his neighbors

Texas officials are suppressing a journalist’s public records request into why tech billionaire Elon Musk called the police on his neighbors in the upscale Austin-area community of West Lake Hills.

According to Lauren McGaughy of The Texas Newsroom at KUT, “Elon Musk has called the cops on some of his neighbors in West Lake Hills, TX. So I asked for all police calls made from that address from the last few years. The sheriff wouldn’t give me the records.” Then, she said, two days ago, Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office stated in a filing that those records could not be released because there would be a “substantial risk of physical harm.”

This kind of stonewalling is unprecedented, McGaughy wrote.

“I have seen this exception [from the Texas Public Information Act] for elected officials like judges, who have come under attack. I have not seen it for a private businessman.”

Musk, who has been moving more of his operations from California to Texas in recent years, has taken an aggressive hard line against anyone who reveals information about his personal activity and movements, even when that information is legally supposed to be public.

In one of the most high-profile examples, after Musk took over the Twitter platform and renamed it to X, he banned an account that was tracking the movements of his private jet based on publicly logged flight plan information with the Federal Aviation Administration, and then proceeded to ban a cohort of journalists who had done nothing more than report on the controversy about it. Trump’s FAA this year changed the rules to prevent this information from being trackable altogether.

More broadly, any attempt by reporters to detail the identities of people working under Musk’s Department of Government Effiency (DOGE) task force have been met with fury from Musk’s supporters, with a recent deep dive into how DOGE employee Luke Farritor dismantled the U.S. foreign aid system sparking fierce debate online about whether he has a right to operate outside of the public eye.

Trump stuns with shocking nuclear announcement after Russia threat

President Donald Trump traded nuclear threats with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev via Truth Social Friday.

“Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump wrote.

“Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

On Thursday, Medvedev sent a message to Trump “to remember that Moscow possessed Soviet-era nuclear strike capabilities of last resort after Trump told Medvedev to ‘watch his words.”

Reuters reported, “Trump, in a post on his Truth social network in the early hours of Thursday, singled out Medvedev…for sharp criticism after Medvedev said that Trump’s threat of hitting Russia and buyers of its oil with punitive tariffs was “a game of ultimatums” and a step closer towards a war between Russia and the United States.”

Nobel-winning economist Paul Krugman warns US faces Venezuela-style collapse under Trump

Nobel Prize-winning economist turned political commentator Paul Krugman tore into President Donald Trump on MSNBC for firing the nation’s chief labor statistics analyst for reporting weak jobs numbers — and told anchor Ari Melber this is the same blueprint that ends up driving authoritarian countries into economic collapse.

This comes at the same time Trump is ramping up threats and attacks on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, an official he originally appointed, for not lowering interest rates because the administration’s tariffs are undoing progress on inflation, sparking additional fears the president could derail independent monetary policy.

“We’re not yet in recession territory, but we’re definitely losing steam,” Krugman, a frequent critic of Trump, said in response to the numbers. “And this is a not good picture. This is not what you want to see happening.”

“[And] Trump sort of crashes out, shoots the messenger,” replied Melber. “We don’t have any modern precedent for that. It’s reminiscent of bigger problems in controlled or autocratic countries and economies. Put that in context for us. And why would that affect — why would that be bad for, say, an average person in the economy?”

“Well, the thing to remember is that this agency, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is not a household phrase, but it is absolutely critical,” said Krugman. “Basically, everything that we know about what’s happening to the economy in the last couple of months comes from the BLS. They do the surveys that tell us how many people are unemployed. They do the surveys that tell us how many jobs companies are creating. They produce the inflation numbers. So all of that comes from them. And it’s — first of all, it’s critical for, you know, for all of us to understand what’s happening, but also how the government itself makes decisions. It’s how the Federal Reserve makes decisions.”

“If you start to corrupt those numbers, if you start to report those numbers as being what makes the president look good instead of what’s actually happening, then bad things start happening,” Krugman continued. “How does someplace like Venezuela get to hyperinflation? … someplace like Argentina get hyperinflation? And an important part of that is that they start ordering the statistical agencies to, you know, report nothing but puppies and rainbows. And so they go plunging ahead. And by the time they finally start, if they ever do, to admit that maybe, maybe we have a problem here, you’re up at 80 percent inflation, right?”

“This is the playbook,” he added. “We’ve seen it many, many times. And now I have to say, faster even than I expected, it’s come to America.”
