Anderson Kambela Mazoka Eternal Rest Date: 12 /07/2025
President Hakainde Hichilema State House Lusaka, Zambia
By Timmy
Dear President Hichilema,
As I rest in my eternal slumber, my heart swells with pride knowing that you have taken up the mantle of leadership, not just of the United Party for National Development (UPND) but of our great nation, Zambia. I am writing to you today to let you know that I am proud of the man you have become and the leader you have proven yourself to be.
I have watched from above as you have navigated the challenges of leading our party and our country. I have seen the struggles you faced in the five past general elections, where despite winning, you were denied victory through unfair means. I have witnessed your courage in the face of adversity, as you were put in prison and taken to court on trumped-up charges, including the treason case.
But I want you to know, Mr. President, that I am proud of the way you have conducted yourself throughout these trials. Your resilience, your determination, and your commitment to our party’s ideals have been an inspiration to me. And now, as President of Zambia, I am proud of the way you are leading our country, working tirelessly to promote economic development and good governance.
Do not worry, Mr. President, that you may not be doing the right thing. I can assure you that you are. You have achieved and done more than I could have ever imagined. Your leadership has brought hope and optimism to the people of Zambia, and I am confident that you will continue to make a positive impact on our country.
As you face the challenges that lie ahead, I want you to know that I am always watching over you. I have seen the accusations and opposition that you are facing, but do not lose focus. You are on the right path, and I am proud to have played a part in shaping the leader you have become.
I can now rest in peace, knowing that the people of Zambia made the right choice in electing you as both the UPND party leader and the President of this nation. Your dedication to our party’s principles and your commitment to the people of Zambia are an example of the legacy I left behind.
Keep pushing forward, Mr. President. You are making me proud, and I know that our country will be in good hands with you at the helm.
“This letter is a work of fiction, and if Anderson Mazoka were alive, this is what he might say to President Hakainde Hichilema”.

“A Story of Courage and Sacrifice: Keith Mweemba’s Unwavering Support for President Hakainde Hichilema”
By Timmy
In April 2017, a pivotal moment in Zambia’s history, President Hakainde Hichilema’s lawyer, Keith Mweemba, stood tall in the face of adversity. As the opposition leader’s legal representative, Mweemba bravely navigated the treacherous waters of Zambia’s justice system, determined to protect his client’s rights.
A Difficult Time
The year 2017 was a challenging period for President Hichilema and his lawyer, Keith Mweemba. The ruling party at the time sought to intimidate and silence the opposition, and Mweemba’s representation of Hichilema made him a target. Despite the risks, Mweemba remained steadfast, refusing to back down in the face of intimidation.
A Threat to Life
As Mweemba himself revealed in court, his life was in danger. He was being trailed by unknown individuals, and his safety and that of his family were at risk. Yet, he continued to represent President Hichilema with courage and conviction.
A Sacrifice for Justice
Keith Mweemba’s dedication to his client’s case was unwavering. He put his life on the line to ensure that President Hichilema received a fair trial, despite the government’s efforts to silence him. Mweemba’s sacrifice was not in vain, as his efforts helped to protect President Hichilema’s rights and pave the way for his future success.
A Legacy of Courage
Today, we remember and celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of Keith Mweemba. His unwavering commitment to justice and his client’s rights is an inspiration to us all. We honor his legacy and acknowledge the important role he played in shaping Zambia’s history.

IMMIGRATION OFFICERS INJURED IN GEORGE COMPOUND ATTACK AS DEPARTMENT CONDEMNS OBSTRUCTION DURING CLEAN-UP OPERATION
THREE Immigration Officers were injured and a government vehicle damaged when a group of unruly residents violently confronted law enforcement officials during a clean-up operation in George Compound, Lusaka, on Friday, 11th July 2025.
The officers, under the Lusaka Regional Immigration Office, were in the process of apprehending a suspected prohibited immigrant when members of the public began demanding the release of the suspect and the situation quickly escalated as stones were hurled at officers, resulting in injuries and property damage.
Immigration Chief Public Relations Officer Namati Nshinka says the George Compound incident formed part of a broader operation covering multiple Lusaka areas, including Comesa, Kanyama, Garden House, Garden Chilulu, Chamba Valley, and Mungwi Road.
He says A total of 45 suspected illegal immigrants comprising 29 Burundians, 13 Tanzanians, and 3 Congolese were apprehended after failing to present valid immigration documents.
The Department of Immigration has strongly condemned the attack in George Compound, emphasizing that any obstruction or assault on officers carrying out their lawful duties is a serious offence.
Meanwhile Kalomo Magistrate Court on Thursday, 9th July 2025, convicted 58-year-old Francois Sengimana Ngange, a Namibian-based Congolese refugee, for aiding and abetting illegal entry into Zambia.
He was fined K80,000 or, in default, sentenced to nine months of simple imprisonment.
Zambia’s Solar Shift: Luapula 50MW Solar PV Plant on Course for December Target
Zambia’s ambitious agenda to reach 1,000 megawatts (MW) of solar electricity by year-end is gaining momentum, aiming to reduce the energy gap hindering economic growth.
The Luapula Solar PV Power Plant, located in Mabumba Chiefdom, Mansa District, is a strategic project expected to inject 50MW of solar energy into the Zambian grid upon completion.
Wholly owned by ZESCO Limited, the national power utility, the plant will support the economic development of Mansa District and Luapula Province.
“This project brings an additional 50MW to the Zambian grid, addressing the energy deficit caused by last year’s drought,” says Eng. Brian Kanyanga, Head of Renewables at ZESCO.
The project is crucial for the region’s economic growth, particularly farming and mining. “Mansa and Luapula Province are growing rapidly, and we need energy to support these economic activities,” Eng. Kanyanga added.
The solar plant has achieved 30% of groundwork and is expected to be completed by December 2025.
“We’re responding to the Presidential call for a 1,000MW solar explosion, diversifying the energy mix, and driving economic growth,” Eng. Kanyanga said.
Supporting Musonda Falls Hydropower Station
The Musonda Falls hydropower station has historically done the heavy lifting of supporting the electricity needs of the province, releasing 10MW into the national grid and supporting the economic life of Luapula Province.
Local economic expansion and the risks posed by hydropower have necessitated the urgency for more reliable energy.
“Musonda Falls hydropower station is strategically placed mainly to support the agriculture activities in Mansa. We have Mansa Sugar, we also have mining activities,” says Eng. Peter Chamfya, Chief Operating Officer at ZESCO Limited.
The output is, however, insufficient, bemoans Eng. Chamfya:
“But the major challenge we have is that the power is still not enough. Much as we upgraded the power station, the power is still not enough. We are going to put a high voltage line which will come from Kasama to support the mining business in Luapula” he added.
That’s where 50MW solar energy comes in to complement the hydroelectricity, combining to energize and unlock Luapula’s manganese mining potential and ultimately boosting President Hakainde Hichilema’s energy diversification mix agenda, which assures resilience and energy security.
Gabon’s President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has been seen wearing a “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) cap upon returning from a trip to the United States.
This followed a visit on July 7, 2025, where he met with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss trade and investment opportunities.
The meeting with President Trump was particularly was about Gabon’s mineral resources like manganese and oil.
The sight of Nguema wearing the MAGA cap sparked varied reactions on social media platforms.
On X, some users criticize it as a symbolic misstep, suggesting it prioritized U.S. interests or appeared as a publicity stunt, while others noted it as a lighthearted or controversial gesture.
No official statement from Nguema himself or government confirms the intent behind wearing the cap.
The context of his U.S. visit focused on economic partnerships, with Nguema emphasizing Gabon’s resource wealth and inviting U.S. investment to counter China’s influence.

The growing war between Attorney General Pam Bondi and top FBI officials Kash Patel and Dan Bongino over the transparency of the Jeffrey Epstein files led one former top DOJ official to rip into the entire crew.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s “The Weekend,” ex-acting United States Assistant Attorney General Mary McCord expressed outrage at the internal battle at the DOJ that has led the FBI’s Kash Patel and Dan Bongino to reportedly call for Bondi’s firing.
Speaking with the hosts, McCord expressed genuine alarm that the war between the officials is putting the country at risk.
“How serious a rift is this and what do you make of the deputy FBI director, according to sources ,demanding that the attorney general be fired and he didn’t show up to work yesterday?” host Jonathan Capehart asked.
“He’s not a serious person,” McCord shot back.” He came into this job with a serious mission, he has no relevant experience to be the FBI deputy director and I think that’s now showing. “
“You know, there are certainly times in my long tenure at the Department of Justice when there are differences between leadership of the Department of Justice and leadership of the FBI,” she added. “We have disagreed on various things, but you don’t do this; you don’t go out in public and demand resignations. You don’t have public spats like this. You you deal with those things like adults who are doing serious work, which is law enforcement and protecting national security in this country.”
“The conspiracies about it and the reason that this is so annoying to the MAGA base is all just such a sideshow. and then to have that boil over into this very public spat, I mean, I think it just shows us all how dangerous this crew that is leading the Department of Justice and the FBI,” she charged.
MAGA fans rained down boos Friday night on a Fox News anchor who asked the audience to clap if they’re satisfied with the conclusion of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
The Department of Justice under Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that after an exhaustive review of the sex trafficking case, they found no evidence of any alleged “client list” or that Epstein blackmailed elites.
That conclusion came after Bondi publicly said the Epstein files were “on my desk for review” in response to questions about whether the DOJ would release a list of Epstein’s clients. She later walked that statement back to insist she was referring to the case file in general
MAGA fans have turned on Bondi over the case, and that trend continued Friday night as Fox News host Laura Ingraham spoke at a Turning Point USA event.
Speaking at the Student Action Summit, in Tampa, Florida, Ingraham acknowledged that “we’re not going to like everything” and said “a lot that’s kind of bubbling under the surface.”
“I know you know what I’m talking about,” she said, before asking the crowd a slate of questions. “How many of you are satisfied — you can clap — satisfied with the results of the Epstein investigation. Clap.”
The audience unleashed loud boos. No one clapped.
“Ok, I told you to clap! You guys weren’t listening,” Ingraham joked, pointing a finger at the crowd and laughing. “I’m not going to grade you on a curve.
“We’re not satisfied!” a young attendee can be heard shouting.
“I was going to get to that,” the Fox News host replied. “How many of you are not satisfied?”
The auditorium erupted into applause.
“Now this is going to be ‘Who’s off the island first,’ right?” she said with another laugh. “Who’s going to be voted off the island first?! I don’t know what to believe on that.”
Ingraham said she’s been in Washington, D.C., long enough to know reports of infighting are often blown out of proportion.
“All these people are friends of mine. I want to get the family back together,” she said. “Lord knows we have enough on the outside coming at us.”
Ingraham said she adores both Bondi and Dan Bongino, the deputy FBI director, but urged the Trump administration to be more “clear” in its messaging.
“Don’t exaggerate what you don’t got,” she said. “And don’t overpromise and underdeliver. It’s probably pretty important that we remember that lesson right now.”
As the fallout over the Trump administration’s handling of files related to Jeffrey Epstein continues, Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly confronted FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino in what The New York Times reported was an “angry face-to-face confrontation.”
“It erupted into an angry face-to-face confrontation at the White House on Wednesday, when an irate Ms. Bondi accused Mr. Bongino of leaking information to the news media in the presence of the F.B.I. director, Kash Patel, the White House chief of staff Susie Wiles and one of her deputies, Taylor Budowich,” wrote New York Times reporter Glenn Thrush on Friday.
Bondi, Bongino and Patel all signed off on a recent report that concluded Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide, and that no evidence existed that he maintained a client list of powerful individuals for blackmail purposes. The report was contrary to many theories around the disgraced financier, including those pushed by Bondi, Bongino and Patel themselves, as well as by others in Trump’s cabinet, including Vice President JD Vance.
The blowback to the report has been swift, particularly among Trump’s most loyal supporters, many of them directing their anger directly at Bondi, though Bongino and Patel have not been spared from MAGA scorn either.
Bongino reportedly took the day off Friday out of growing frustrations over how the Epstein case was handled, and is even considering quitting over the matter, CNN reported. And now, those growing inter-agency tensions include multiple heated confrontations between top leaders at the Justice Department and the DOJ.
“Mr. Bongino, during another confrontation within the past week, told Ms. Bondi she had overhyped the likelihood that a review of the case undertaken by the Justice Department and FBI this year would reveal a list of Mr. Epstein’s sex-trafficking clients, and possibly raise questions about his 2019 death by hanging in custody, which was ruled a suicide,” Thrush wrote.
The blowback has only heated up since the DOJ and FBI report leaked on Monday, with the Trump administration continuing to spark fury among its base for continually shutting down further inquiries into the matter. Longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon even saw a revolt of sorts on his far-right podcast War Room earlier Friday, with guests accusing Trump of having “become the deep state.”
Thousands of Arsenal fans have signed an online petition aimed at blocking the club’s move to sign Noni Madueke from Chelsea.
Madueke, 23, has recently emerged as a surprise target for the Gunners as manager Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his attacking options. Reports suggest Arsenal have already submitted a £50 million offer after agreeing personal terms with the England international.
The club’s hierarchy have done their due diligence, consulting people who have worked with Madueke, and appear convinced he’s worth the investment. However, many supporters strongly disagree.
According to the Mirror, a fan using the name Blaze Fifty launched a ‘#NOTOMADUEKE’ petition on change.org, which has already attracted over 2,000 signatures since Wednesday.
In the petition, Blaze Fifty wrote:
“Arsenal fans deserve better. We are so close to success and instead of capitalising on the squad we have, it seems we’re taking two steps back just like in the last three transfer windows.
We can surely do better than Madueke and [Viktor] Gyokeres. Show some ambition—repay the fans for the way we’ve backed the club for the past two decades.”
While many Arsenal fans have voiced support for the petition, rival supporters have taken the opportunity to mock the club’s fan base as negotiations continue.
“They could be anybody from any clubs,” one rival fan posted on X. “Any genuine fan would back the club’s choices.”
Another pointed out: “This is the same team that’s been crying out for a backup for Bukayo [Saka], and now suddenly Madueke isn’t good enough. Which top player is going to come and be a backup to Bukayo anyway?”
Some Arsenal fans themselves expressed embarrassment over the petition. One wrote: “Absolutely disgraceful behaviour. We really are the worst fan base in the world.”
Meanwhile, Madueke is currently with Chelsea at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The Blues will be aiming for their second Club World Cup title when they face European champions Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.
Senegalese Prime Minister Sonko criticises President Faye
I saw Levy Mwanawasa become his own man and proceeded to persecute Frederick Chiluba who had nominated him, appointed him and campaigned for him.
The similar case of Felix Tshisekedi and Joseph Kabila..
Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has publicly criticized President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, marking a rare instance of open dissent within the country’s top leadership.
Speaking at a Pastef party meeting, Sonko accused the president of lacking authority and failing to defend him amid public attacks. He claimed that the presidency is not doing enough to support government reforms and expressed frustration over limited power to govern effectively.
Sonko, who had designated Faye as the party’s presidential candidate in 2024 after his own legal disqualification, now appears to question the leadership dynamics. “I am calling on President Faye to assume his responsibilities—this laissez-faire cannot continue,” Sonko said
Napoli have reportedly rejected a fresh €75m bid from Galatasaray for the signing of Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, despite the Turkish giants meeting the official release clause in his contract.
Nigerian sports journalist and transfer insider Onyebuchi Onokala, also known as Buchi Laba shared the transfer update.
He said Napoli are actively working to push the Super Eagles striker towards a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia instead.
Onokala wrote: “Napoli officially turns down Galatasaray €75m third offer for Victor Osimhen. The official Release clause Figure.”
“Victor James Osimhen says YES to Galatasaray and wants to continue with the Turkish team,” Onokala added.
The 26-year-old Nigerian had earlier given his approval to a permanent transfer to Galatasaray, following a successful loan spell, and has no interest in a switch to the Middle East.
According to Onokala, Napoli’s refusal to accept Galatasaray’s offer, despite it matching the contractual clause, is a deliberate strategy to frustrate the deal as they wants to push him to Saudi Arabia.
Justin Bieber has released his most personal album yet.
On Friday, July 11, Def Jam dropped SWAG, the 31-year-old pop star’s seventh studio album and his first in four years. Across its 21 tracks, Bieber delves into everything from his mental health battles to recent strains in his marriage.
The project features appearances from Sexyy Red, Dijon, Lil B, Gunna, Cash Cobain, 2 Chainz, comedian Druski, and more. It follows 2021’s Justice.
Among the album’s standout moments is “Walking Away,” where Bieber seems to reference tensions with wife, Hailey Bieber:
“Days go by so fast, don’t wanna spend them with you So tell me why you’re throwing stones at my back You know I’m defenseless… Girl, we better stop before we say some s–t We’ve been testing our patience I think we better off if we just take a break.”
But he makes it clear their love remains strong, singing later:
“Baby, I ain’t walking away You were my diamond Gave you a ring, I made you a promise I told you, ‘I’d change’… And baby, I ain’t walking away.”
The album also nods to Bieber’s viral run-in with paparazzi last month—when he snapped, “I’m a dad. I’m a husband. I’m standing on business.” That line inspired track 16, “Standing on Business,” which features a playful appearance by Druski.
Bieber worked on SWAG in Iceland earlier this year. Last week, he teased the release by sharing the tracklist and a black-and-white billboard in Reykjavik. On Instagram, he posted intimate family photos with Hailey and their 10-month-old son, Jack.
“My forever n always,” he captioned one shot of him hugging Hailey.
The album arrives amid a turbulent stretch for Bieber. A 2023 documentary claimed financial stress drove him to sell his music catalog for $200 million in December 2022 after his Justice tour fell apart. An audit later revealed he owed former manager Scooter Braun over $8 million. Last week, Bieber finalized a settlement, agreeing to repay Braun and other debts.
Bieber and Hailey, who married in 2018, welcomed Jack in August 2024. While sources told US Weekly that Bieber has been “difficult to deal with” during this period, Hailey has reportedly held their family together. Still, the couple has continued to publicly praise one another.
“I’ve done a lot of dumb things, but the smartest was marrying Hailey,” Bieber told Vogue.
Hailey added, “I’ve learned so much from Justin… he’s had to face the most scrutiny of any person I know. He told me, ‘Baby, I’ve been here before. You’re not going to win. There is no winning.’”
SWAG marks another chapter in Bieber’s eventful career, which began when Braun discovered his YouTube videos in 2007.
Now 31, Bieber has won dozens of awards—including Grammys, Billboard, and American Music Awards and continues to open up through his music.
This is the moment a dead man’s life savings are dropped from a helicopter as strangers rush to grab handfuls of the money.
The extraordinary scene saw $5,000 worth of cash fall from the sky over mourners saying their final goodbyes to carwash owner Darrell Thomas.
Footage shows the moment the aircraft flies over the funeral ceremony, where Darell, from East Detroit, was laid to rest after dying from Alzheimer’s aged 58.
Known for his generosity, Darrell’s final wish was to shower his guests in cash as they made their final goodbyes.
The helicopter is seen releasing dollar notes and rose petals over a crowd of funeral guests.
Hundreds of notes are seen floating in the air before falling to the ground.
Shocked onlookers can be seen gazing up at the sky, as others scramble to get their hands on some of the money.
“Let me get out and get that money,” a child is heard shouting off-camera, while others are heard laughing and cheering.
The ceremony was held near Gratiot Avenue and Connor Street, East Detroit, where Darell’s business, Airport Express Lube and Service, is located.
Traffic came to a standstill as stunned drivers stopped their cars to get their hands on some of the showering money.
While police officers were informed about the petal drop, they said they were unaware cash would also be dropped.
Darell’s son Smoke told local news it was his father’s dying wish to give back to his community by “showering the streets” with money.
A staggering $5,000 was dropped in total, Darell’s niece, Crystal Perry confirmed, with Smoke contributing some of his own money to the drop in honour of his late dad.
Smoke told locals news: “Detroit, y’all might not know who my father was, but he was a great father.
“Among his community he was a legend, and he blessed everyone – and that was his last blessing to everyone. That’s all it was.”
Lisa Knife, an employee at the car wash, said “everybody got a little bit” of the money. There was no fighting, none of that. It was really beautiful.”
A baby girl grew a “micropenis” after laying on her father’s chest in a bizarre case medics say should serve as warning to thousands of new parents.
According to Swedish medics, the case involved a baby girl who lay down on her father’s bare chest. This is an important part of newborn care called skin-to-skin contact, and which has several health benefits.
However, in this case the father was using a testosterone gel product, an artificial version of the male s£x hormone. This is a drug commonly prescribed to help men combat low energy and lagging s£x drive as they age, colloquially called the “manopause”.
By laying his daughter on his bare chest the man unknowingly exposed her to abnormally high levels of testosterone.
This led to profound changes to her genitalia, with her clitoris growing longer—looking like a small penis—and her labia closing over resembling a male scrotum.
Local media described this a “micropenis”.
The concerned parents of the girl, who was at this point 10-months old, took her to medics who quickly uncovered the source of the problem via blood tests.
Thankfully, after the man stopped accidently exposing the girl to his testosterone gel her genitalia shrank down.
Professor Jovanna Dahlgren, an expert in paediatric endocrinology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, said the case, which occurred eight years ago, was part of a half-dozen similar incidents she cited in her warning.
Talking to the Swedish newspaper Göteborgs-Posten, Professor Dahlgren said she wanted to raise awareness of the dangers hormone treatments posed to children as more and more parents are taking them.
“I don’t think people always understand how potent these treatments are,” she said. “The parents become completely desperate when they understand what has happened.”
She added there had been another case where a 10-year-old boy developed breasts after being exposed to a female s£x hormone treatment his mother was taking.
The warning comes amid a booming industry of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), with a number of private firms marketing the hormone to men.
A high-ranking Ukrainian spy, reportedly involved in multiple operations inside Russia, was gunned down in a brazen daylight attack on the streets of Kyiv.
Chilling surveillance footage shows Col. Ivan Voronych, a senior officer in Ukraine’s Security Service (SSU), crossing a street in the Holosiivskyi district when an armed assailant ran up and shot him multiple times at close range before fleeing. The attacker, believed to have used a silenced pistol, was seen sprinting through a parking lot outside Voronych’s apartment building moments before firing five fatal shots.
“With five shots at close range while leaving his apartment at 8 a.m., the enemy killer did his dirty work,” said Roman Chervinsky, a former Ukrainian intelligence officer, who noted Voronych had been actively fighting Russian aggression since 2014.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1943695783934431547
Voronych, who led high-level special operations, counter-terrorism, and security missions, was found with multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced dead at the scene. A fellow officer quickly blamed Russia for orchestrating the assassination.
Ukraine’s Security Service confirmed a criminal investigation has been opened. “The Security Service and the National Police are taking comprehensive measures to establish all the circumstances of the crime and bring those responsible to justice,” a spokesperson said.
The assassination comes nearly three months after Russian General Yaroslav Maskalik was killed in a car bombing outside his Moscow home, following a deadly Kremlin strike on Ukraine. Since the war began in 2022, both Ukraine and Russia have engaged in a shadow war of targeted killings against each other’s military and intelligence figures.
Although Pedophiles are judged and sentenced to face punishment for their crimes, some still come back stronger even after that. Perhaps, it’s time other reforms need to be considered.
In a landmark ruling, a court in Madagascar has sentenced a man to surgical castration and life imprisonment with hard labor for the rape and attempted murder of a six-year-old girl in 2024.
The case took place in Imerintsiatosika, a municipality 30 km west of the capital Antananarivo.
The punishment is the first of it kind to have been imposed in the country, following the adoption of a controversial law in February 2024.
The law, passed by Madagascar’s parliament, permits surgical or chemical castration for individuals convicted of raping minors aged 10 and under, prompted by a rise in such cases.
The convicted man’s sentence was announced on July 10, 2025, by Attorney General Didier Razafindralambo, who described the decision as “a strong and significant response from the justice system” intended to scare potential offenders.
Former First Lady ESTHER LUNGU has told a South African court that two days before her husband’s death, he complained about the ill-treatment he was subjected to by the Government.
Ms Lungu said at the time, the sixth President, Edgar Lungu, was sedated by medical personnel so that they could insert a ventilator.
She said Mr Lungu repeated his wish that, in the event of his death, the people who made his life difficult, even preventing him from seeking medical care, should not be anywhere near his body.
Ms Lungu said it was her late 68-year-old spouse’s wish that President Hakainde Hichilema should not preside over his funeral.
“I personally spoke to the late President Lungu on 3 June 2025 for the last time, shortly before he was sedated in order to insert a ventilator.
“Among other things, he complained about the ill-treatment that the Applicant (the State) had subjected him to, repeated his wish that if he died, the Applicant should be nowhere near his body or funeral, and stated that he had also shared this wish with the Zambian researcher, Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa, when they met on 18 May 2025. This was a deeply traumatic experience culminating in a painful farewell.
“The late President Lungu did not awake again after that and passed away on 5 June 2025 in the hospital where he was being treated,” Ms Lungu submitted before the Pretoria High Court.
“I pause at this juncture to highlight that the late President Lungu was a deeply religious man, devoted to his faith, who regularly attended church and often sought counsel from bishops and spiritual leaders during times of personal and political hardship.”
She added that “in our private conversations, he confided in me on more than one occasion that he would not be afforded a dignified send-off in Zambia befitting his position as a former Head of State by the State or the President.
“His desire to be mourned and buried in the absence of the current President was therefore not only personal and spiritual but also grounded in his well-founded fear of continued disrespect and dishonour,” Ms Lungu submitted.
Mr Lungu died in South Africa on 5 June 2025 while seeking medical attention in the neighbouring country, where he is said to have “fled” to in January.
The widow added that shortly after her husband’s death, there were several discussions between her family and the Zambian Government to finalise the late President’s burial arrangements.
“The Applicant’s (Zambian Government’s) affidavits do not accurately reflect these discussions.
“It will be clear to the Honourable Court that no final agreement was reached with the family regarding the funeral proceedings or where the late President Lungu would be laid to rest, as the Applicant kept changing positions.”
Ms Lungu said her family accepted and respected Mr Lungu’s wishes and, upon his passing, began planning for a private burial.
But an impasse arose between the Lungu family and the Zambian Government regarding the burial of Mr Lungu.
The family accused the Government of not being sincere with the burial “agreement”, especially regarding the deceased’s wish that Mr Hichilema should not preside over the funeral.
“During the late former President Lungu’s time in South Africa, he was open and consistent in expressing his wish that, upon his death, the current President should be nowhere near his funeral or body.
“These intentions were communicated on numerous occasions to me and other family members. His reasons were rooted not only in his personal mistreatment, compromised safety, and medical care but also in the principled rejection of a ceremonial burial by a government that had, in his view, forsaken and persecuted him in life.”
Ms Lungu added that it was also specifically stated by Mr Lungu to his lawyer, Makeni Zulu, in April/May of 2025, when he was already severely ill, that he did not want the State or, alternatively, the current President to preside over his burial proceedings if he died.
“He stated that it was immoral and disrespectful to subject a person to rites they did not believe in during their lifetime, at their funeral, and worse still, to have a perceived enemy superintend over their funeral as if they were spoils of war,” she added.
The former First Lady said Mr Lungu went to South Africa to flee from being “persecuted” by the State.
Ms Lungu added that it is undesirable for herself and her children to continue residing in Zambia on a permanent basis.
“It is glaringly clear that the conduct of the Zambian Government has fallen far short of what could be described as honourable or lawful.”
Ms Lungu also criticised the Zambian Government’s decision to sue her grieving family and prevent it from burying Mr Lungu’s remains.
“Rather than treating the late President Lungu with the dignity befitting his status, or showing compassion to his family, the Government has, regretfully, acted with political vindictiveness and disregard for basic human rights,” she added.
The family insists that the Zambian Government has not stated where Mr Lungu should be buried, because the law in South Africa gives the next of kin the right to decide.
This is in a case where Zambia’s Attorney General, Mulilo Kabesha, has filed a lawsuit seeking to have Mr Lungu’s remains repatriated back to Zambia for a State funeral and burial.
The Benefits Were Revoked, Not Suspended! Here Is the Evidence
….evidence speaks louder than the denials. The benefits were not suspended. They were revoked and revoked immediately…..
PRETORIA, 11th July, 2025
New evidence has emerged directly contradicting the Zambian Government’s claims that late President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s presidential benefits were merely “suspended.”
Mrs. Esther Lungu, widow of the late President, here being referred as respondent 1, has filed a powerful response in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, where the Zambian Government is seeking to block the burial of the former Head of State in South Africa.
Central to her argument is an official government letter dated 30 October 2023, which she has attached as Annexure EL10 and its contents are damning.
According to the letter, signed by a senior Government official Dr Oliver Mubita Kalabo, the revocation of benefits was “with immediate effect” and left no room for ambiguity. The letter states unequivocally:
“In addition, the Office of the Sixth President Is closed with Immedlate effect and all staff assigned to that Office will be redeployed. Further, take note that Government will no longer provide security, accommodation, transport and other requirements as the law provides, to a Former President..”
The language used “withdrawing all of the benefits” is far more definitive than a suspension and amounts to a full revocation under the provisions of the Benefits of Former Presidents Act.
Notably, the Act makes no provision for suspension of benefits; it either provides or does not, and it explicitly excludes the restoration of benefits once withdrawn under specified circumstances.
Mrs. Lungu’s court filing further asserts that this act of revocation had real consequences for her husband. Paragraph 3.21 of the affidavit states:
“As a result of the complete and final revocation, the late former President Lungu lost all state-provided benefits and was reduced to the status of an ordinary private citizen… he was further subjected to gross abuse of human rights including public vilification, significant and unlawful restrictions on his freedom of movement, infringement of his right to assembly and deprivation of his right to life by prohibition of access to medical care.”
The government’s claim that the benefits were “only suspended” appears increasingly untenable in light of the documentary evidence now before the South African court.
One thing is clear: The evidence speaks louder than the denials. The benefits were not suspended. They were revoked. And now, the world is watching.
This affidavit was filed in response to the Zambian Government’s application seeking the following relief:
2.1.1 That the Applicant is entitled to repatriate the body of the late President Edgar Lungu for purposes of a state funeral and burial at Embassy Park in Lusaka, Zambia.
PLEASE SIT DOWN, Dr Sishuwa tells Mwiya Musokotwane, the Minister of Finance’s Son
Sishuwa Sishuwa tweets…
Mwiya Musokotwane, I seek your indulgence to write a few paragraphs so that we can put context to how we got here for the benefit of informed public debate and interested readers. As you know, the public issues I comment on do not benefit me personally in any way. If anything they bring huge risks but I do what I do for reasons that I have previously stated here: https://diggers.news/guest-diggers/2023/06/14/why-i-do-what-i-do/
Now let us start.
On 8 July, I wrote and posted a letter to Hichilema in which I discussed real threats to my life and expressed my disappointment with Hichilema’s presidency on several public issues. Here is the link to the post. https://x.com/ssishuwa/status/1942584154584916146
The following day, 9 July, one of Hichilema’s self-confessed and most vociferous supporters, Laura Miti, dismissed the threats on my life as unfounded and falsely claimed, without offering any supporting evidence, that I have previously published similar claims against other Zambian presidents, so she was tired of me singing the same song. Here is the link to Laura’s post – though she reportedly posted a longer version on Facebook where I do not have any account. https://x.com/LauraMiti/status/1942860504042528975
Here, I should briefly pause to explain why I use the word ‘falsely’. As you may know, I have been a regular commentator on Zambian politics since 2009, and my commentaries are in the public domain. Not once since then have I published anything stating that Rupiah Banda, Michael Sata or Edgar Lungu was after my life. Anyone making a claim to the contrary should provide evidence in form of my published statements that Banda, Sata or Lungu were after my life. So, in addition to dismissing my concerns without talking to me, Laura falsely attributed a position to me and proceeded to characterise what I had said as delusional using that misrepresentation of historical record.
For reasons that I have stated previously (see here: https://x.com/ssishuwa/status/1778471670979707050), I chose not to engage Laura because I saw her effort as a deliberate attempt to distract attention from the issues I had raised in the letter by turning me into the subject. In recognition of her right to free speech, which includes understanding and tolerating those who speak confidently even on matters they least understand, I only said the following in response to her post:
“Like any other person, you have the right to express yourself in any way, and I fully support this right.” Here is the link to the post. https://x.com/ssishuwa/status/1942869111190745513
Enter Distant Relative.
On 9 June,@LankyObserver, who is a good friend, communicated with me to establish the facts around the very recent attempt on my life. After telling him that I had noted a few cars trailing me a few times beforehand, I explained to him that a trusted friend of mine recently asked me to pick them up from their airport. I normally avoid moving at night but made an exception on condition that he would drive on our way back home. Once on the highway, we experienced a scary incident around 8pm when two cars, both without number plates, sandwiched mine between them and almost crushed it. The one in front abruptly stopped and the one behind us came speeding at us. Fortunately, I was not driving. My friend who was driving managed to avoid hitting the one in front and escape though the one behind hit our car, causing a dent. We reported the incident to the nearest police station after which we went to the hospital.
A police officer told us the event was not a typical car hijacking incident as we had thought. They said car hijackers usually want the car and would not do anything that would destroy it. They suggested the idea was probably to induce an accident and then if we survived, set the car and the occupants in it ablaze. It was a terrifying moment, and police are still investigating the matter to try and see if they can use road cameras to identify the faces of the culprits. This explains why I did not go into much detail in the letter, but since Distant Relative made an effort to communicate with me, I shared with him further details. Although my main concern was the life of my rather innocent friend, I expressed my concern that had I died, no one would have known that it was me in the car or that it was my car, especially if it was burnt to ashes! I probably would have simply been another crime statistic, and UPND supporters may have been quick to point to high crime in South Africa!
I later learnt that following our conversation, Distant Relative, without my knowledge, went to X where he posted the following:
“If a person tells you their life is in danger and your response is to call them delusional, it signals a lack of empathy. Don’t wait until the worst happens to them. It’s how families lose people & wonder what they missed.” Here is the link to the post. https://x.com/LankyObserver/status/1942927427325542516
Based on the above abbreviated context, you will notice that Distant made the post above after he had the benefit of additional insight and was indirectly responding to Laura’s earlier dismissal of my fears. In response to the same post, you, Mwiya Musokotwane, posted the following, without any communication with me:
“Normal people lodge these very serious allegations with the police and provide evidence and witnesses to demonstrate said seriousness. In the absence of that;(sic) the direction of these increasingly serious allegations appears to be libelous.” Here is the link to your post. https://x.com/mwiyas/status/1942930467826577632
Your post is problematic for several reasons.
First, you jumped into something that was not directed at you. Why? I made it very clear in my letter that I do not want third parties to respond to the contents of my letter. If you read my letter, you would have noted this point and respected my desire to engage with the person I had addressed it to. Again, I ask: why did you feel the need to respond to a matter that was addressed to a very specific recipient? If you did not read my letter, then you should have stayed away from the discussion since it would mean that you lack the required knowledge and understanding that should inform your opinion on the subject.
Second, you implied that I am not part of what you consider to be “normal people” since I have not reported anything to the police nor presented evidence or witness testimony in support of what I stated in the letter. You never bothered to ask if I had reported anything I had said to the police. You simply assumed and concluded that I had not done so before writing my letter and therefore went against what “normal people” do. I do not know when you, Mwiya Musokotwane, obtained the medical qualifications devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of deleterious mental conditions to pronounce yourself authoritatively on my mental state – even in the absence of a physical examination. The last time I checked, you were an economist! However, if you are now a qualified psychiatrist, then please accept my congratulations for your additional achievement as well as your remarkable capacity to diagnose someone’s condition remotely.
Thirdly, like Laura and other supporters of the establishment, you never bothered to establish if I am okay before you resorted to trafficking in assumptions. Your primary interest was not my welfare but the possible harm to the reputation of Hichilema or those whom you felt I may have defamed in my letter. In exhibiting this conduct, you ironically demonstrated the importance of the very point that Distant Relative was making. You could not even pretend that you care for the life of another person, a fellow citizen. Your immediate and overriding concern was the false assumption that I was making potentially libelous allegations, which you did not even disclose, against those for whom you care.
After all this, you turn around and say, “Dr Sishuwa, let us have respectful, constructive and objective dialogue”. You even have the audacity to claim that you care for Zambia! Where is your expressed outrage against the corruption, tribalism, authoritarian tendencies, the constant lies, and careless debt contraction of Hichilema’s regime? Where is your stated outrage against those in power today who are condemning Zambians to 17 consecutive hours of darkness through load shedding, who are robbing the poor of their dignity through policies that favour foreign commercial interests, who are making a kill through stinky oil deals (brokered in UAE soon after the election in 2021) with their local business associates even when they order the petroleum products at prices that are way cheaper than that what they sell, at inflated rate, to the poor consumer in Zambia, and who are violating the Constitution and have no respect for court rulings?
Argh, Mwiya Musokotwane! There is a lot of rot in this regime, like the one before it, and people like you who pretend that you care for Zambia make my blood boil! Please pause for a moment and seek to understand the gravity of the issues you are commenting on before you do.
LUNTE Member of Parliament Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya writes::::
WHO DID ECL OFFEND KANSHI?
—————————-
But give Edgar Chagwa LUNGU a dignified send off – the loud cry of UPND government.
Even in campaigns now, no more using of PF regalia. Even alliance members with NCP who are PF must not use PF regalia. This is how far it has reached.
I remember HH as president, addressing the media – and he told them; next time you chose a president, be careful!
Edgar’s PF was accused of having borrowed 20 Billion United States Dallars. After a review of numbers, it turned out to have just been over $12Billion.
But many of those on the opposite side of the political isle to Edgar’s PF labeled his party as a criminal organization. And some of them never tire in calling us criminals, masholi and so on.
Does this mean that Edgar presided over an organisation of criminals? Was he therefore considered as a chief criminal?
Could it be have been the reason his party would be given away to whoever government wished and office bearers changed at the Registrar of Societies without regard to party internal processes?
When it’s members asked the Vice President officially, she’d state in broad day light; on the floor of the house where she transacts official business that “being in opposition you have to be strong.”
The illegal changes of office bearers of Edgar’s PF at the governments Registrar of Societies is politics in this regard.
This is where politics have now reached.
Operations of government departments have been made to join politics. Those who watch actions of the police will inform you that some people commit similar offenses but only those carefully selected are arrested and those others are left alone to enjoy life.
The police cannot accept reports when certain names are reported for alleged offenses.
In some cases even for offenses committed jointly, one male would be arrested and one female left alone to keep enjoying life unhindered. It’s totally deplorable!
Edgar’s party – regarded as a criminal organization. Edgar’s family has nearly all of them arrested including Edgar’s wife now widow in court.
Edgar didn’t even preside over the give away of 51% of a mine to some self – or whoever.
Neither did he president over the unconstitutional transfer of a road and toll gates to that so called concessionaire.
Edgar didn’t punish people by presiding over reckless export of electrify, not even maize.
But yet, his organisation was criminal!
Could they have been seeing him not only as having presided over a criminal organization but also a criminal family by those who call us masholi?
Edgar was being sought by government for investigations back home when he was sick; on a hospital bed in a foreign country. His lawyer told us so.
Edgar is now dead – he is no more, not to ever reappear in this life again. His family want to honour his wishes. The machinery which considered him to have presided over criminals want to give him a dignified send off. How ironic?
What is this new dignity about? Who is capable of giving dignity to Edgar? From where is this new conviction of dignity arising? What dignity is more important to Edgar than his own wishes? Whose dignity is in sight over there?
Edgar spoke of hypocrisy! This is the opposite of rectitude.
That machinery which labeled nearly everyone who associated with Edgar as a criminal, still ridicule him in death. This ridicule has extended to the floor of parliament.
As someone who loved and supported Edgar, I really feel the pain for him and his family and his party. While his family struggles to fulfill his wishes, I pray that his soul the Lord has taken.
May God help for his definition of dignity to be fulfilled.
On January 19th, 2025, former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu touched down at OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa not to red carpets, not to diplomatic courtesies, but to silence.
There was no official welcome from the Zambian Embassy. No state representation. Just a former Head of State abandoned, exiled in dignity.
That same morning, he fought to board the plane back home. Authorities tried to block his departure. The Aviation Security Manager who allowed him passage was immediately suspended, then dismissed punished for showing him mercy.
Captured in a haunting photo, President Lungu stands quietly outside the airport with his devoted wife, Mama Esther Lungu, and family spokesperson Hon. Makebi Zulu. No motorcade. No aides. Just luggage by their feet and a painful wait for a hired vehicle like ordinary exiles not the former First Family of a sovereign nation.
The man who once commanded fleets, ruled a nation, and stood tall on global stages reduced to a passenger with no place to return to.
CENTRAL PROVINCE UPND YOUTH CHAIRPERSON NTALASHA SUSPENDS FIVE MEMBERS FOR CRITICIZING PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA
12-07-2025
Central Province UPND Youth Chairperson, Mr. James Ntalasha, has suspended five youths from the Kabwe District for accepting payments from an opposition political party to publicly criticize Republican President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema.
This decision follows a video that emerged four days ago, circulating in opposition WhatsApp groups, in which the youths criticized the president without providing a proper analysis of a recent incident in Mufumbwe District.
Mr. Ntalasha emphasized that the UPND is an organized party founded on principles of discipline, unity, love, and respect. He underscored the importance of adhering to the party’s code of conduct, stating that indiscipline and bad behavior will not be tolerated.
The Provincial Chair made these remarks while addressing party members in Kabwe yesterday. He expressed that under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership, the party has made significant progress in its developmental agenda, ensuring that no constituency is left behind.
Notably, the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) has increased from K1.6 million in 2021 to K36.1 million in 2025, leading to a rise in developmental projects and empowerment programs, including loans, grants, and skills training for youths, men, and women.
Mr. Ntalasha further praised Kabwe Central Constituency Member of Parliament, Hon. CHRIZOSTER HALWINDI PHIRI, for effectively utilizing the Constituency Development Fund to construct and implement visible projects in the area.
He also pointed out that the UPND government has made substantial progress in employing teachers, improving access to free education for children, hiring health workers, and creating job opportunities for youths in various ministries, including Defence and Home Affairs.
Meanwhile, UPND Provincial Coordinator Mr. Mukubani reiterated that the UPND administration has provided opportunities for everyone, regardless of political affiliation, and condemned the five youths’ unconstructive behaviour. He urged the five individuals to redirect their energy toward promoting the achievements of the UPND.
UPND Kabwe District Chairperson, Mr. Richard Makonise, also condemned the youths’ actions, stating that they failed to follow proper protocol before speaking on camera, which is against the UPND constitution.
UPND MOURNS PASSING OF ALLIANCE PARTNER FRESHER SIWALE
Lusaka – July 11, 2025
The United Party for National Development (UPND) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mr. Fresher Siwale, a political ally and former colleague who worked closely with the party since upto date.
Lusaka Province UPND Chairman Obvious Mwaliteta, accompanied by Lusaka Province Youth Chairman Anderson Banda,District youth chairman Anthony Zimba and other party officials, visited the funeral house to pay their last respects. The visit was marked by a heavy sense of loss and grief among party members and mourners.
Speaking at the funeral house, Mr. Mwaliteta described the late Mr. Siwale as a principled and outspoken individual who stood for the truth at all costs. “We are saddened by the passing of Mr. Siwale.
He was our colleague from opposition update , and an alliance partner whom we struggled together with to achieve what we have today. We have lost one of us,” Mr. Mwaliteta said, visibly moved.
He added that the UPND family will always remember Mr. Siwale for his honesty, courage, and unwavering commitment to the ideals they shared.
The Provincial Chairman also conveyed a message of condolence from President Hakainde Hichilema, who expressed heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family on the untimely death of Mr. Siwale.
“This is not only a loss to the family but to the entire UPND and the political alliance that fought for change. Mr. Siwale’s contributions will not be forgotten,” Mwaliteta said.
PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA RESPONDS TO PUBLIC OUTCRY ON DRUG SHORTAGES AND HIGH PRICES
July 11, 2025
LUSAKA – President Hakainde Hichilema has acknowledged the cries of Zambians over drug shortages and high medicine costs, assuring the nation that his government has taken major strides to improve access to essential medicines across the country.
This is contained in a statement issued by Chief Communication Specialist Clayson Hamasaka. The President said drug availability in public health facilities has improved significantly, rising from 46% in 2021 to 80.5% in 2024. “We are committed to delivering quality healthcare to every Zambian,” he stated.
The President’s remarks come at a time when many citizens have been voicing frustrations over the unavailability of medicines in hospitals and the unaffordable prices in pharmacies..
This statement offers hope that those concerns are being addressed. “Stealing drugs undermines the health of our people,” President Hichilema warned, classifying drug theft as an economic crime that will face strict punishment.
The Head of State directed the Ministry of Health to maintain momentum in drug procurement and to equip rural health centers with diagnostic tools. He added, “We are here to serve 20 million Zambians who pay our salaries.”
President Hichilema also highlighted his continued concern for maternal and child health, recalling a tragic 2018 incident when a newborn died due to a lack of an incubator.
This announcement, coupled with increased pharmaceutical funding from K1.4 billion in 2021 to K4.9 billion in 2025, marks a renewed push to make medicines available and affordable for all Zambians.
Earlier this morning, the President held a Presidential stocktake meeting on drug availability in the country at State House.

ZAMBIAN TROOPS COMPLETE TRAINING AHEAD OF DEPLOYMENT TO CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC
The Eleventh Zambian Battalion (ZAMBATT XI) to be deployed in the Central African Republic under the United Nations Multi-Dimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) has completed it’s pre-deployment training at the Kenneth Kaunda Peace Training Center (KKPTC) in Lusaka.
The troops, who have completed three months of training, are now ready for deployment to the Central African Republic in the coming weeks
They will take over from ZAMBATT X which is almost completing its one-year deployment.
Speaking when he closed the pre-deployment training, Minister of Defence Mr. Ambrose Lufuma urged the troops be professional and continue with the good work the previous 10 battalions from Zambia did in the Central Africa Republic.
Mr. Lufuma said ZAMBATT XI must provide security to areas under its control and protect vulnerable people such as children, women and the elderly.
The Minister of Defence added that the situation in the Central African Republic is unpredictable and ZAMBATT must execute its mandate with alertness and knowledge gained during the training.
And Mr. Lufuma has assured the Zambia Army that government will help transform the Kenneth Kaunda Peace Training Center into a center of excellence.
Mr. Lufuma says the center needs more additional infrastructure and equipment before it can be transformed into a center of excellence.
And Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele said the ambush on Zambian troops in the Central African Republic a few weeks ago will not deter the Army from fighting to bring peace to that country.
In his message to the troops, Lieutenant General Zyeele said the death of a Zambian peacekeeper Corporal Stephen Sakachoma in the attack will not deter or weaken the resolve of the Zambian troops in contributing to peace building in the Central African Republic.
The Army Commander urged the troops to uphold United Nations policies especially zero tolerance against sexual offences.
Lieutenant General Zyeele said he will not hesitate to recall any soldier who is involved in sexual offences.
Meanwhile, KKPTC Commandant Brigadier General Telenkako Banda thanked Britain, France and the United States Governments for the support during the training.

LUSAKA WOMAN’S DEATH IN LODGE ATTRIBUTED TO SUSPECTED SUICIDE OVER UNPAID DEBTS, POLICE SAY
A 28-year-old woman who allegedly died by suicide after failing to repay debts has been put to rest.
Police investigations suggest that Thandiwe Mwale had been collecting money from various people under the pretext of saving it for interest.
In past instances when she defaulted, her husband reportedly stepped in to settle the debts.
However, in a recent default, no one came forward to assist her, leading to increased pressure and harassment from creditors, factors believed to have contributed to her depression.
In a statement, Assistant Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha said police in Lusaka received a report of suspected suicide involving Ms Mwale, whose body was discovered at a named lodge in Kamwala South.
“According to initial reports, on 8th July 2025, a housekeeper at the lodge alerted authorities after noticing that one of the rooms remained locked beyond the expected checkout time,” she said.
Ms Kaitisha added that on July 7, at 10:00 hours, Ms Mwale left her home and checked into the lodge, where she was later found deceased.
She said officers who visited the scene discovered that the room was locked from the inside.
“Upon forcing entry, they found three empty bottles of a poisonous substance, two bottles of beer, and a takeaway pack containing chicken and chips near the bed. The body of the deceased was later identified by her husband,” Ms Kaitisha said.
She added that the body was taken to the University Teaching Hospital, where a postmortem examination was conducted.
ILLEGAL MINING IN ZAMBIA: WHAT IS THE WAY FORWARD?
By Gregory Chisha
The phenomenon of illegal mining in Zambia reflects a complex web of socio-economic and political realities underpinning our nation’s mining sector. To truly understand its rise, we must interrogate: What circumstances have given birth to illegal mining? Who profits, and who pays the price? These questions anchor any meaningful discourse on the crisis.
Zambia’s mining industry, long the backbone of the national economy is rich with vast deposits of gold, copper, nickel, emeralds, manganese, and coal. Yet, for all its promise, the benefits of this mineral wealth rarely reach the grassroots. Instead, they are often captured by an elite minority: multinational corporations, politically connected individuals, and foreign interests. So, we must ask, whose interests are genuinely being served?
The rise of illegal mining is a direct reaction to systemic exclusion. Most illegal miners are unemployed citizens, former mine workers, or migrants driven by poverty and the absence of opportunity. Their participation in unregulated mining is not born of criminal intent, but out of economic desperation.
Compounding this is the state’s limited regulatory presence in remote mining areas. In such vacuums, sophisticated syndicates thrive, profiting heavily while local communities suffer environmental degradation, exploitation, and violence.
It is essential to recognize that the crisis extends beyond informal miners. Illegal mining is entangled with white-collar crime, illicit financial flows, and covert foreign interference. Networks of corruption allow stolen resources to evade state revenue systems, robbing Zambia of billions while impoverishing its citizens.
Ironically, millions of kwacha are spent combating illegal mining, funds that could be redirected to sustainable development. Yet this reactive approach does little to dismantle the root causes.
So, where do we begin?
1. Reframing the Narrative.
We must stop viewing illegal miners solely as criminals. Instead, we must pursue solutions that address the structural inequalities driving their actions.
2. Formalizing Small-Scale Mining.
The first step is to legalize and regulate small-scale mining. By bringing these operations into a transparent framework, the government can create employment, stimulate local economies, and ensure resource wealth is shared more equitably.
3. Ensuring Transparency and Competition.
Opening the mining sector to fair, competitive, and transparent participation, domestic and foreign alike is crucial. All players must comply with regulations that prioritize Zambia’s national interest. A well-regulated sector curbs syndicates and illicit financial flows while attracting sustainable investment.
4. Empowering Mining Communities.
Communities must be placed at the center of policy transformation. Mining proceeds should directly improve infrastructure, health services, education, and livelihoods in the areas bearing the weight of extraction.
5. Guarding Against Exploitation.
The government must remain vigilant against actors who seek to exploit state machinery under the pretext of fighting illegal mining. Mining policies must be economically transformative, environmentally sustainable, and people-centered.
In conclusion, Zambia must shift the conversation on illegal mining from criminalization to regulation, transparency, and equitable benefit-sharing. Only then can we safeguard our resources, uplift our people, and build a mining industry rooted in national dignity and development.
