Chawama Exposes UPND’s Adoption Fault Lines

🇿🇲 ANALYSIS | Chawama Exposes UPND’s Adoption Fault Lines

Chawama has become one of the most politically instructive constituencies of Zambia’s election year, not because of the opposition’s strength, but because of what the ruling party is now revealing about itself.

The January by-election was supposed to be a routine test of mobilisation in the capital. Instead, it ended in an upset. The seat was taken by the FDD’s Bright Nundwe under an opposition alliance arrangement, while UPND with Morgan Muunda failed to flip a constituency it had heavily contested.

Now, the aftermath has descended into open internal warfare.

At the centre is Timothy Kantenga, the party’s initially preferred candidate, and Muunda, an aspiring parliamentary figure who has publicly declared Kantenga “expelled” and blamed him for the loss. Kantenga has responded with a firm rebuttal, insisting Muunda holds “no constitutional authority” to expel anyone and that he remains “a committed and bona fide member” of UPND.

This is not simply a personal dispute. It is a symptom.

When Electoral Losses Become Internal Trials

Kantenga’s statement is notable for its political subtext. He rejects allegations of decampaigning, bribery, or sabotage, calling them “an attempt to shift blame following an electoral outcome.”

That line matters because it captures the instinct that often emerges inside governing parties: when a loss occurs, someone must be sacrificed.

Muunda’s accusations are sweeping. He claims Kantenga undermined the campaign in John Howard area, distributed inducements including a cow, blocked alliance figures such as Charles Milupi, and even sought adoption without a valid voter’s card as part of an alleged plot to disqualify UPND at nomination stage.

These are extreme claims. They also reveal the paranoia that adoption season produces.

In an election year, adoption is never just selection. It is survival.

Adoption Battles Are Becoming UPND’s Quiet Crisis

UPND’s strength since 2021 has been institutional discipline and a clear presidential centre. But discipline becomes harder when incumbency produces a crowded field of ambition.

Young aspirants want space. Long-serving MPs want continuity. Constituencies become battlegrounds before voters even arrive.

Chawama shows what happens when internal competition is not contained: party members begin litigating defeat through voice notes, factional blame, and public threats.

Muunda reportedly declared he would do “whatever it takes” to become the sole candidate in August. Kantenga, in contrast, urges unity and warns against “public confrontation” that erodes confidence.

This is the governing party’s adoption dilemma in miniature. What makes Chawama especially sensitive is location.

Lusaka is not a rural stronghold where party loyalty is inherited. Urban constituencies are transactional, impatient, and volatile. By-elections in the capital often expose mood swings before general elections.

A ruling party cannot afford to look unserious in Lusaka, not because Lusaka decides everything, but because it signals everything.

When candidates declare themselves winners, then dispute results, then accuse each other of sabotage, voters do not see strategy. They see disorder.

FDD did not win because it is suddenly dominant. It won because the opposition consolidated while the ruling party messed up with the adoption decision.

This is the irony of 2026 politics. UPND’s biggest threat may not be a single opposition figure, but internal erosion at the point of candidate selection.

Kantenga ends his statement by reaffirming President Hichilema as his “sole candidate” and signalling loyalty to the centre. But loyalty to the president does not automatically resolve constituency-level rivalry.

UPND’s challenge now is structural: can it run an orderly adoption process that protects legitimacy, rewards renewal, and avoids public implosions? Because every adoption dispute that spills into the open does something dangerous.

It turns a governing party into a collection of quarrelling aspirants. And Chawama is warning that the campaign is not only against the opposition.

It is also inside the house.

ACC DROPS FORFEITURE CASE AGAINST LUSAMBO PROPERTIES

ACC DROPS FORFEITURE CASE AGAINST LUSAMBO PROPERTIES

THE Anti-Corruption Commission has discontinued a forfeiture application against former Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo’s Chamba Valley properties.

The properties in question, located in Lusaka’s Chamba Valley, include a single-storey four-bedroom house, a guest wing, and an incomplete block of six flats.

In a notice of discontinuance filed before the Economic and Financial Crimes Court at the Lusaka High Court, the Commission did not state the reason for discontinuing the application.

In its application, the Commission had cited Mr. Lusambo’s wife Nancy, Mukuka Mukonge, and ZDA – Henan Guoji Development Company as interested parties.

In an interview with Diamond News, Mr. Lusambo’s lawyer Charles Changano welcomed the Commission’s decision, saying the matter had been awaiting judgement.

ELECTION BILL A UPND DRIVEN PROJECT – MAKEBI

ELECTION BILL A UPND DRIVEN PROJECT – MAKEBI

THE proposed Electoral Commission of Zambia electoral reform bill is a United Party for National Development project meant to deal with opposition political parties ahead of the August 13 general election, says Patriotic Front (PF) presidential aspirant Makebi Zulu.

In an interview with The Mast, Zulu said the ECZ was now interfering with political party operations by dictating how they should operated and who associated with.

Zulu said it was not the mandate of the ECZ to decide how a political party or movement should be registered for it to participate in elections.

“It is surprising that the ECZ has so much interest in political parties because in the past there were no problems. So what are they trying to do?” he said.

Zulu said despite ECZ disowning the leaked undemocratic bill, it had continued scheming on how it would help the UPND win the 2026 general election by manipulating the system.

He said the process was flawed and the UPND was trying to cover up the irregularities it was doing through ECZ.

“I am sure the ECZ is just targeting opposition political parties so that it can create confusion in political parties to reject participation as a result of the confusion,” Zulu said.

Recently, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro featured on Diamond TV, where he said political alliances should register with the Registrar of Societies if they wanted to contest an election.

Kasaro also advised candidates to only use campaign materials and symbols of the party under which they had filed nominations.

But Zulu said the move was targeting the opposition because the UPND was not comfortable with its fallen popularity and was scared of losing.

“This move is meant to disadvantage the opposition. This is wrong and should be condemned in the strongest terms,” he said.

ACC APPEALS ACQUITTAL OF LIVINGSTONE MAYOR MULEABAI

ACC APPEALS ACQUITTAL OF LIVINGSTONE MAYOR MULEABAI

The Anti‑Corruption Commission (ACC) has appealed against the acquittal of Livingstone Mayor Constance Muleabai on corruption charges.

The ACC has filed the appeal in the Livingstone High Court – Economic and Financial Crimes Division, raising six grounds of appeal.

Among the grounds, the Commission argued that the Subordinate Court erred in law by acquitting Ms. Muleabai when there was prima facie evidence that she had committed corruption.

A week ago, the Livingstone Magistrates Court acquitted Ms. Muleabai of two counts of corruption.

OPPOSITION UNITY CRITICAL TO CHALLENGE UPND IN 2026 SAYS FORMER LUANSHYA MP STEPHEN CHUNGU

OPPOSITION UNITY CRITICAL TO CHALLENGE UPND IN 2026 SAYS FORMER LUANSHYA MP STEPHEN CHUNGU.

FORMER Luanshya Member of Parliament Stephen Chungu has called on opposition parties to abandon the illusion that any single party can defeat the ruling UPND in the August 13, 2026 general elections.

In an interview in Luanshya, Mr. Chungu emphasised that even the main opposition Patriotic Front (PF) lacks the strength to win alone and must build alliances with other parties.

He expressed optimism that the ongoing confusion within the PF would be resolved, suggesting alternative pathways to get the party back on the ballot.

Mr. Chungu warned that time is running out for opposition forces to coordinate their efforts, insisting that while Zambians have faith in the opposition, unity is non-negotiable.

He urged opposition leaders to set aside personal egos for the sake of the nation.

And Political analyst Friday Mwanza reinforced the call for unity, stating bluntly that no opposition party currently has the capacity to defeat the UPND on its own.

He lamented that opposition parties are expending energy fighting each other rather than focusing on their common rival as the election approaches.

Mr. Mwanza appealed to opposition leaders to convene urgently and resolve their differences before the August polls.

HICHILEMA’S SOFT POWER DIPLOMACY

HICHILEMA’S SOFT POWER DIPLOMACY

By Kellys Kunda

Zambia has just sent an assortment of items to flood-hit Mozambique.

She joins other regional nations such as South Africa whose helicopters have been in the country airlifting flood victims.
Not too long ago, Zambia dispatched an aircraft to neighboring Botswana full of medicines – part of the consignment was a donation while the other was for sale, according to reports.
And remember when Malawi lost her Vice President?

It was Zambia who sent her helicopters on a mission that found the wreckage and airlifted the body.

Soft power diplomacy has been on full display under Hichilema.
It’s been an active foreign policy that has allowed the country to be fully engaged in regional affairs.

It has demonstrated that Zambia can provide leadership in the region.

Such an image is not only prestigious in foreign affairs, most importantly, it gives a country influence.

And influence is important for purposes of shaping regional and international affairs.

Aren’t we tired of watching helplessly as the west creates the world in its own image?

Of course we are. It’s therefore refreshing that we can participate in regional humanitarian efforts that earn us a place at the table of influential nations.

Of course, Zambia doesn’t set out on humanitarian activities to attract attention or make a name for herself.

However, the world takes note and when her delegate rises at the UN or indeed at any other international forum to speak, the world must pay attention.

The world must pay attention because Zambia doesn’t just speak, she acts.

For those of you currently in foreign missions, Zambia’s soft power reputation must be one of your selling points as you embark on economic diplomacy.

SUB SABALA DENIES CLAIMS 408 EMPIRE ATTEMPTED USE OF JUJU

By: Sun FM TV Reporter

Copperbelt-based artist Sub Sabala has dismissed claims that 408 Empire music group attempted to use juju for fame protection, stating the suggestion was never endorsed by the team.

The claims stem from statements attributed to Y Celeb in his Behind the Scenes song, where he reportedly said that one of the group members proposed visiting a witch doctor a notion that allegedly made him Sense Danger.

In an interview on Sun FM TV’s Zed Urban, Sub Sabala refuted the allegations, questioning why a self-proclaimed “super government” would record a song discussing such matters.

Sub Sabala explained that Ray Dee, one of the group members, merely raised the idea out of fears he had heard circulating in the music industry, but the group did not act on it.

He further criticized Y Celeb, claiming the solo artist was attempting to shape the public image of 408 Empire despite already having a successful solo career.

LASER LOCK-ON BLUNDER! US MILITARY ZAPS ‘MYSTERY DRONE’ TURNS OUT IT WAS A PARTY BALLOON

In an eye-popping mix-up straight out of a comedy sketch, the US military reportedly fired high-energy laser weapons at what was first believed to be foreign surveillance drones near the southern border only to later discover the “threat” was nothing more than a party balloon.

According to a CBS report, advanced laser systems were deployed after the unidentified objects triggered security concerns, sparking fears of possible foreign drone activity in sensitive airspace. With tensions already high over border security and aerial incursions, the response was swift and decisive.

But the drama quickly deflated.

After the lasers locked on and brought down the objects, investigations revealed the airborne suspect was not cutting-edge spy tech — but an ordinary celebratory balloon drifting across the sky.

The incident has raised fresh questions about aerial threat detection and the challenges of distinguishing between genuine security risks and harmless floating decorations in increasingly crowded airspace.

USS George H.W Bush aircraft carrier targets Middle East.

In a dramatic escalation of tensions with Tehran, the Pentagon is prepping the USS George H.W. Bush carrier strike group for possible deployment to the Middle East, in a stark signal of US readiness for conflict

The move comes as President Donald Trump ratchets up pressure on Iran, warning that the United States stands ready to take military action if Tehran does not abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions. Administration officials say the deployment would send a powerful message of deterrence and readiness to back words with force.

Sources say warships, fighter jets, and support vessels tied to the George H.W. Bush fleet are being readied for rapid movement into the region, as diplomats scramble to avert a crisis.

Trump’s tough rhetoric has alarmed allies and adversaries alike, with fears growing that a misstep could plunge the region into a wider conflict.

With the world watching, Washington’s next move could reshape the future of Middle East peace or spark a major confrontation.

Israel Showcases Air Defense Power with Advanced “David’s Sling” Test

Israel’s Ministry of Defense, in cooperation with the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and defense firm Rafael, announced the successful completion of a new and highly complex test of the David’s Sling air and missile defense system.

The latest trial simulated multiple, simultaneous threats, including guided missiles, cruise missiles, attack drones, and unmanned aerial vehicles. According to officials, the system performed flawlessly and is now fully ready for operational integration.

Notably, the test incorporated real-world operational lessons drawn from recent conflicts, allowing the system to be refined under realistic combat conditions rather than theoretical scenarios. David’s Sling serves as Israel’s mid-layer defense, bridging the gap between Iron Dome (short-range threats) and the Arrow system (long-range ballistic missiles).

Each interceptor is estimated to cost around $700,000, significantly cheaper than the US-made Patriot interceptor, which can exceed $6 million per shot—highlighting Israel’s focus on cost-effective defense.

Defense analysts suggest the accelerated upgrade reflects preparations for emerging threats, particularly coordinated missile strikes and swarm-style kamikaze drone attacks. The test underscores Israel’s strategy of advancing defensive technology to counter increasingly complex threats while reducing both casualties and long-term defense costs.

IPID Investigator Nomsa Masuku Broke Down And Cried During Her Testimony At The Madlanga Commission.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Investigator Nomsa Masuku broke down and cried during her testimony at the Madlanga Commission on Thursday.

Masuku who was investigating the alleged killing of Emmanuel Mbese whose body was dumped in dam in Nigel,  told the commission this case which involved SAPS officers, EMPD officers and civilians linked to private security companies made her and her family become targets.

Masuku described a series of threats that began during sensitive investigations involving law enforcement officials.

Masuku detailed that the threats were not abstract, they were specific, planned and communicated to her through intermediaries who warned her that arrangements were being made to harm her.

She mentioned three prominent incidents which she claims were meant to take her out.

The first incident where she would recieve death threats direct, the second incident was the shooting of her son who was driving her around and when her vehicle was shot at while she was driving but she survived.

“At one point, I was informed that individuals were allegedly planning a hit. Someone who knew me contacted me privately, warning that although my name was not mentioned directly, the description matched mine. The department was notified, and investigators in my office were instructed to carry firearms due to the seriousness of the threat,” she said.

Masuku said the threats did not stop. She explained that investigators often receive threats but must still report for duty the next morning. In her case, the danger moved beyond intimidation.

“My son was shot and became wheelchair bound. Luckily he survived, but his life changed permanently. He was left wheelchair-bound for a period,” she said.

Masuku told the commission he is now trying to walk again.

She became emotional while recounting that moment, thanking God that he did not lose his life.

“My son was targeted because he had taken it upon himself to drive and accompany me during the height of the threats. He would take me to work, to police stations and to court appearances, tryi

Report Alleges Iranian Diplomats Used Diplomatic Privileges to Smuggle Cash to Lebanon

An investigative report claims that senior Iranian diplomats allegedly exploited diplomatic passports and immunity to transport large sums of US dollars into Lebanon, with the funds reportedly intended to support Hezbollah amid mounting financial pressure.

According to the report, several high-ranking Iranian officials are accused of carrying cash-filled suitcases on commercial flights to Beirut, allegedly bypassing inspections at Rafic Hariri International Airport through diplomatic channels. The funds were reportedly aimed at restoring Hezbollah’s liquidity after recent Israeli strikes damaged key positions and disrupted financial routes through Syria.

The investigation names at least six senior figures, including former ambassadors and a former secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, as being linked to the alleged operations. The report suggests the cash transfers were part of a broader effort to stabilize Hezbollah’s finances during a period of severe strain.

Separately, the US Treasury recently announced sanctions on a Lebanon-based gold exchange company, Jood SARL, which US officials identified as a key mechanism allegedly used to convert Hezbollah-linked gold assets into cash.

The Iranian government has not publicly responded to the allegations.

OUR JAILED FRIENDS WON’T BE RELEASED IF WE DON’T WORK HARD – DAVIES  MWILA

OUR JAILED FRIENDS WON’T BE RELEASED IF WE DON’T WORK HARD – MWILA

FORMER PF Secretary General Davies Mwila says the Brian Mundubile led Tonse Alliance should work hard in the general elections to ensure its incarcerated members are released.

Speaking when some party leaders met the PF Kitwe District leadership, Mwila advised PF faction Information and Publicity Chairperson Emmanuel Mwamba to stop causing confusion within the party.

He added that Mwamba risked not coming back if the UPND won the August polls.

“Emmanuel Mwamba, leave our daughter alone, let her mourn the father, we’ve not buried ECL please. That propaganda will not help you. At a later stage, Tasila will respond so you leave it at that. And this issue of trying to bring confusion with people, it will not help you.

I have responded for the first time because Mwamba is out of the country, how is he going to come back when we fail to win back power? I’m in Zambia, I’m enjoying, because when you are in your country, you enjoy. If you are in another country, you can eat meat but you will remember home. So that confusion he’s bringing, he won’t come back, he will be there for good,” he said.

Mwila advised the party leadership to work hard.

“We have friends who are in jail, when we work hard they will be released, if we don’t work hard they won’t be released. So colleagues I want to encourage you that continue working hard. The task ahead of us is huge, you know how campaigns are if you saw [what happened] in Kasama, we are beating the [UPND], that’s the indicator. When you see them losing the Chawama by-election then in the general elections it will be whitewash. When you see them winning how they won in Kasama, I know what they did, they can’t beat us in a general election especially here, we are guaranteed victory. Let’s just work hard and be determined, you will find that we will be back in government,” Mwila said.

Meanwhile, Mwila said those who were unpopular were bringing confusion in the party.

“When you go to Eastern Province, it’s Mundubile, you go to Luapula, it’s Mundubile, in Northern he’s like a child, now those of you who are unpopular why are you bringing confusion? When God chooses that this one will be president then that’s it. Who knew that Edgar Lungu would be president? Who knew the (Fredrick) Chiluba would be president?

Chiluba stood against Humphrey Mulemba and Authur Wina but Chiluba won. Brian Mundubile has been chosen by God and I can tell you that no one will stop his movement. Brian Mundubile as Tonse Alliance president is very geared, very committed, very strong and he’s not shaking,” said Mwila.

“Even us as supporters we should not be shaken, they will come to shake you but they won’t manage because they are only surviving on propaganda…. We are strong on top there, so we are not being shaken. This other group, we have a by-election in Serenje, they went and brought a political party called Exodus and that’s how our people chased them that ‘the party we know is FDD under Tonse Alliance’.

We are going to have one or two additional constituencies, we expect to win all the constituencies in Kitwe and moreover Kitwe is the headquarters for BM8 that’s what I know. Politics starts in Kitwe because it has more numbers of constituencies than any other district”.

DALITSO LUNGU TO APPEAL COURT’S FORFEITURE OF VEHICLES AND PROPERTIES

DALITSO LUNGU TO APPEAL COURT’S FORFEITURE OF VEHICLES AND PROPERTIES

Dalitso Lungu will challenge a High Court ruling that ordered the forfeiture of over 70 vehicles and 21 properties to the state, his lawyer has said.

Charles Changano, representing the son of former president Edgar Lungu, said his client will appeal the decision, arguing that the State failed to prove any crime was committed.

On Monday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court ruled that the vehicles and properties, valued at over K23 million, were tainted and proceeds of crime.

Justices Anne Malata-Ononuju, Pixie Yangailo and Ian Mabbolobbolo ordered the forfeiture of the assets, which included a filling station among other properties.

However, Mr Changano insists his client had provided a legitimate explanation for the source of his wealth.

“Dalitso explained that the source of the properties was his father, former president Edgar Lungu,” the lawyer said.

The case is part of ongoing scrutiny of assets acquired by individuals connected to the previous administration.

The appeal, when filed, will test whether the court’s findings that the properties were proceeds of crime can withstand legal challenge at a higher court.

I’LL ENACT LAW REQUIRING PARTIES TO DISCLOSE SOURCES OF CAMPAIGN FUNDS – MUNDUBILE

I’LL ENACT LAW REQUIRING PARTIES TO DISCLOSE SOURCES OF CAMPAIGN FUNDS – MUNDUBILE

TONSE Alliance faction president Brian Mundubile says he will enact a law that will compel political parties to disclose their campaign funding sources and set limits on expenditure to prevent corruption.

Mundubile adds that all Tonse Alliance campaigns rely on contributions from ordinary members, who provide vehicles, food and water to support the alliance.

Last week, Minister of Information and Media Cornelius Mweetwa said President Hakainde Hichilema would mobilise resources locally to fund his election campaign.

In an interview, Mundubile said the strength of a political party lies in its supporters, noting that campaigns backed by membership contributions go a long way.

“One day I look forward to the time that we’ll enact a law that will compel political parties to disclose their funding. It’s important that like other countries do, they actually put a ceiling on how much a political party can put in its campaigns. This is meant to stop corrupt activities behind campaigns. When you enact a law that puts a ceiling on how much you can employ on campaigns, it helps the country, it helps the Zambian people because then you don’t have people coming in to fund these elections and later dictate policies of that particular country.

Many countries have failed to develop because of that, so when we hear that the President will fund [his campaigns] using his money and we see how well funded the recent campaigns have been, look at the money that went into Chawama, look at the money that went into Kasama, look at the money that went into Petauke, the money that went into Lumezi, Kawambwa and all these places. You clearly see that there is a lot of money that is employed in these campaigns, then one wonders where this money is coming from,” Mundubile said.

“So, as president of the alliance, we’ll endeavour to enact laws that will ensure that elections are not funded by people who will later come and begin to demand policies that favour them and not the Zambian people. That of course raises a number of questions because campaigns are very expensive as it were, if one says he’s going to fund the campaigns with his own money then you begin to wonder because it’s a lot of money.

The strength of a political party is based on the supporters. If one should say the campaigns will be supported by the supporters of the party then yes because when you have membership it goes a long way. But if a single person says I will fund the campaigns, then it raises a lot of questions”.

And commenting on social media allegations that his campaigns were funded by Agro Fuel owner Shashikant Patel ahead of the August general elections, Mundubile refuted the reports.

“I want to state that there is no truth in that and the people quoted and the company’s name, I have never had any personal engagement with them, I have never met them before. What is important to note is that people must understand that Zambians are awake, Zambians will only follow a leader that is focused, a leader that they feel will bring development to this country. A leader that they feel will unite this country, so people should desist from creating stories on account of the growing popularity of the alliance.

The alliance relies on its support from contributions of ordinary members, ordinary members of the alliance contribute their vehicles to be used by the alliance, they contribute food, they contribute water and so on. So, it must be understood very clearly that this alliance draws from pro-poor policies, it’s the strength of this alliance, [that’s] why it’s unstoppable because it is anchored on the support of its membership,” said Mundubile.

“So, ignore all social media stories alleging that there are some big funders behind us, we don’t have that money, you would have seen it. What we have is just the people’s support, and not the money that they think we have. I think I wouldn’t delve into how the President wants to fund his campaigns, because then I’ll be feeding into the people that are speculating.

You know the UPND is the party in power, the time HH was elected into power, they were sowing cash everywhere, so I’m not surprised to hear that he will fund the campaigns with his own money. So, this time around if he is funding with his own money so to speak and it’s a lot of money, we have seen a lot of money spent in these campaigns”.

Mulenga Kapwepwe bemoans forfeiture of Dalitso Lungu’s property

Author and daughter of the late Vice President in the UNIP
government, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe, Mulenga Kapwepwe has
bemoaned the property forfeiture involving the late former
President Edgar Lungu’s son Dalitso.

Speaking when she featured on the popular evening livestream
Emmanuel Mwamba Verified Kapwepwe acknowledged that while she
had not read the full judgment, she condemned the way Dalitso’s
property was taken by the state.

Her strongest criticism was directed towards the Forfeiture of
Proceeds of Crime Act itself, saying it has loopholes
subjecting it to abuse.

She described the law as a “shishita law” a deviation from the
norm ‘one who alleges should prove’ and a shortcut that
transfers the burden of proof from the state to the citizen.

She is of strong view that property should only be forfeited
upon conviction, not on suspicion or speculation.

She warned that when laws allow the state to grab property
without following a high benchmark standard it can be easily
weaponized, adding that when laws are partial they eventually
affect everyone.

She raised red flag pointing out that public institutions such
as the judiciary, and law enforcement agencies, risk being
drawn into partisan fights.

Be that as it may, from the outset, she described the current
state of Zambia as distressing and alarming.

She lamented what she views as a fading line between government
and public institutions, warning that once the state becomes
captured by partisan interests, the republic itself is
weakened.

In her overall assessment, Zambia is leaning toward what she
described as a kakistocracy a system where the least qualified
occupy critical positions.

Kapwepwe echoed sentiments by Ghanaian President John Dramani
Mahama who said Africa needs strong institutions.

She also commented on what she called the growing toxicity in
public discourse, warning against tribal polarization and the
normalization of hatred as part of the national discourse.

She said Zambia’s diverse cultural heritage should be a source
of pride and unity, not division.

Politically, she disclosed that she has been approached “from
many angles” with offers ranging from running mate to vice
president and even president.

While she stopped short of declaring political intentions, she
emphasized that leadership is a “sacred covenant” rooted in
service, not title.

She acknowledged that politics is a “very dirty game,” yet
posed a powerful question: “If we all sit back, who is going to
fight for this country?”

Mulenga Kapwepwe is an award-winning author and playwright.
Mukenga’s creativity was encouraged by her father, former vice
president of Zambia, Simon Kapwepwe who was an author himself.

She began writing her own plays early on in her career with a
lack of formal theatre education. Mulenga’s passion is
preserving the history and culture of her people.

In 2016, she co-founded the Zambian Museum of women’s history,
an initiative to spotlight Zambian women who have contributed
to the country’s traditional and contemporary history.

She believes African proverbs are life hacks, and so should be
preserved and passed on to generations.

Mulenga sits on many boards and chairs many art and literary
institutions in Zambia. She also owns a football academy for
women, some of whom have gone on to play for the Zambian
women’s football team.

UPND HAS FAILED YOUTHS, MUST GO – MUDOLO

UPND HAS FAILED YOUTHS, MUST GO – MUDOLO

THE United Party for National Development has failed youths and must step aside to allow new leadership that would prioritise young people and empower them so they should contribute to the country’s economic emancipation, Willah Mudolo has said.

Mr Mudolo, the presidential aspirant for the August general elections says the challenges facing the youth were not a reflection of their ability or ambition but of government failure.

“Zambia’s youth are not failing. The UPND government is,” Mr Mudolo said. “No young nation can advance under the weight of outdated thinking and broken systems.

.

Our task is clear: to reform institutions, modernise governance, and lead with clarity of purpose so that national progress becomes inevitable, not aspirational.”

Mr Mudolo, the South Africa-based Zambian business mogul and philanthropist said many young Zambians were educated and skilled but remained excluded from economic opportunities.

“Many young people are educated but unemployed, skilled but locked out from access to needed funding, ready to work but denied opportunity. This government has had time. It has had power. And it has achieved nothing for the youth. It has failed them,” Mr Mudolo said.

Mr Mudolo said the August 13 general elections would mark a decisive change in leadership and direction, promising that he would introduce a modern and coordinated national youth policy that would place young people at the centre of the economy.

“Under my leadership, Zambia will have a modern, coordinated national youth policy that moves young people from the margins to the centre of the economy linking education to jobs, skills to industry, innovation to funding, and talent to real opportunity,” Mr Mudolo said.

He stressed that young people would be active participants in governance rather than passive observers.

“Youth, you are not spectators. You are decision-makers,” he said. “You will have access to training, capital, markets, and the tables where decisions are made. And with that access comes real responsibility in building this nation.”

Mr Mudolo also criticised what he described as the tokenisation of young people during election campaigns.

“Young people are not a box to tick during campaigns. You are the workforce. You are the innovators. You are God’s blessing and Zambia’s future,” he said.

UPND TENSIONS SURFACE:KANTENGA DANIES UNDERMINING CAMPAIGN, REJECTS REMOVAL CLAIMS

UPND TENSIONS SURFACE:KANTENGA DANIES UNDERMINING CAMPAIGN, REJECTS REMOVAL CLAIMS

Lusaka, February 12th February 2026

By Jack Makayi

Timothy Kantenga has dismissed claims that he has been expelled from the United Party for National Development (UPND), maintaining that he remains a committed and bona fide member of the ruling

In a statement issued Thursday, Mr. Kantenga challenged remarks attributed to Mr. Morgan Muunda regarding his alleged expulsion and his purported role in the recent Chawama parliamentary by-election.

He stated that Mr. Muunda does not possess constitutional authority within the party to expel any member, emphasizing that issues of membership and discipline are governed by established party structures and procedures.
“As of now, I remain a committed and bona fide member of the ruling United Party for National Development, ” Mr. Kantenga said.

He further denied allegations that he undermined the party’s campaign or worked against its candidate during the Chawama by-election. Mr. Kantenga described claims that he engaged in decampaigning, voter bribery or any form of sabotage as false and unsupported by evidence.

“At no point did I engage in decampaigning, voter bribery, or any conduct intended to sabotage the party’s electoral prospects, “he said,  adding that attempts to blame him for the by-election outcome were unfair and misleading.

Mr. Kantenga noted that election results are influenced by multiple factors and called for reflection and unity rather than public accusations. He urged party members to resolve any internal differences through appropriate party channels.

He also dismissed allegations concerning his eligibility to participate in party processes, stating that his voter’s card is valid and that he intends to vote for President Hakainde Hichilema in the August 13, 2026 General Elections.

“Any suggestion that I sought adoption with the intention of disqualification is baseless and illogical, “he said.

Mr. Kantenga reaffirmed his endorsement of President Hichilema as his sole candidate for the 2026 elections and said his focus remains on strengthening the party in Chawama ahead of the polls.

He called on party members and supporters to remain calm and prioritize unity and development over personal disputes, warning that internal conflicts risk eroding public confidence in democratic leadership.
The statement was issued on February 12, 2026.

RESPECTED AUTHOR MULENGA KAPWEPWE GIVES VIEWS ON THE STATE OF THE NATION ON EMV

RESPECTED AUTHOR MULENGA KAPWEPWE GIVES VIEWS ON THE STATE OF THE NATION ON EMV

By Brian Matambo | 11 February, 2026

Respected author and daughter of the late Vice President in the UNIP government, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe, Mulenga Kapwepwe featured on the popular evening livestream Emmanuel Mwamba Verified and spoke on a wide range of issues, offering her prognosis on the state of the nation.

Kapwepwe, a seasoned playwright, cultural activist, and firm defender of tradition, did not approach the discussion as a partisan figure. She spoke as a custodian of memory and values, grounded in Zambia’s founding ethos, yet clearly troubled by the present trajectory of the country.

From the outset, she described the current state of Zambia as “distressing” and “alarming.” Her concerns were not emotional outbursts but structured reflections rooted in governance, law, and institutional decay. She lamented what she sees as a blurring of lines between government and state institutions, warning that once the state becomes captured by partisan interests, the republic itself is weakened.

In a moment that has since drawn national attention, Kapwepwe addressed the legal cases involving the children of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. She referenced the property forfeiture involving Dalitso Lungu and acknowledged that while she had not read the full judgment, she was aware that an appeal was being pursued. However, her sharper criticism was directed at the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act itself.

She described the law as a “shishita law” – a shortcut that shifts the burden of proof from the state to the citizen. In her view, property should only be forfeited upon conviction, not on suspicion or speculation. She cautioned that laws that allow the state to seize property without meeting a high evidentiary threshold can easily be weaponized, and that when laws are unfair, they eventually “come for everyone.”

Her remarks were widely interpreted as a critique of what she termed a growing “politics of retribution” in Zambia. She expressed concern that institutions of the state, including the judiciary and law enforcement agencies, risk being drawn into partisan battles.

On the sensitive burial dispute involving late president Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who has remained in a mortuary for months, Kapwepwe appealed to both law and humanity. Using a proverb, she stated, “You don’t fight over something that is not yours,” arguing that burial rights fundamentally belong to the family. She pointed out that even under South African legal principles, the order of burial preference rests with the spouse and children before others. She questioned what would be lost by allowing a family to bury their own, suggesting that humanity should guide such decisions.

Beyond the legal and political tensions, Kapwepwe also focused on the moral and institutional health of the nation. She expressed alarm at the erosion of professionalism in the civil service, arguing for a return to meritocracy rather than appointments based on loyalty or political contribution. In her assessment, Zambia is drifting toward what she described as a kakistocracy – a system where the least qualified occupy critical positions.

She also addressed the growing toxicity in public discourse, warning against tribal polarization and the normalization of hatred as part of the national lexicon. For Kapwepwe, Zambia’s diverse cultural heritage should be a source of pride and unity, not division.

On her own political future, she made a notable admission. She revealed that she has been approached “from every direction” with offers ranging from running mate to vice president and even president. While she stopped short of declaring political intentions, she emphasized that leadership is a “sacred covenant” rooted in service, not title. She acknowledged that politics is a “very dirty game,” yet posed a powerful question: “If we all sit back, who is going to fight for this country?”

Observers have noted that Kapwepwe is widely believed to be associated with leading 2026 presidential candidate Makebi Zulu, although she did not confirm any formal alignment. Her emphasis on constitutional order, institutional restoration, and ending political vengeance mirrors themes increasingly prominent in opposition discourse.

As a respected author and defender of culture, Kapwepwe’s voice carries weight beyond partisan lines. Her appearance on EMV was not merely commentary. It was a sober intervention by a figure rooted in Zambia’s founding tradition, now urging a return to principle, professionalism, and humanity.

Whether she ultimately enters the political arena remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that her words have entered the national conversation at a time when the country stands at a crossroads.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PATRIOTIC FRONT FAITHFUL

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PATRIOTIC FRONT FAITHFUL

By Bwembya Mwaume

Fellow Patriotic Front members, we have reached a decisive moment in the life of our party. This is no longer a season for polite silence or diplomatic ambiguity. It is a moment that demands clarity. The PF is facing what can only be described as its own Solomon Test. The question before us is straightforward: who truly wants to preserve the party, and who is prepared to divide it in order to advance personal ambition?

In the biblical account, the true mother was revealed by her willingness to protect the child rather than see it destroyed. Today, the PF is that child. And unfortunately, there are individuals who seem prepared to fragment it if that guarantees them control over a portion of it. When leaders sidestep established party procedures, create parallel centers of influence, or align externally without transparent consultation, it is not innovation, it is self-interest dressed as strategy.

Leadership is not proven by how quickly one positions themselves for the presidency. It is not proven by mobilizing temporary loyalties or projecting authority over structures that were never constitutionally transferred. Leadership is proven by loyalty to party organs, respect for institutional processes, and discipline under pressure.

Barely days after launching what appears to be a self-driven campaign to project control over PF structures, Brian Mundubile and his team now find themselves confronting a political reality they may have underestimated. The Patriotic Front is not a personal enterprise that can be taken over by declaration. It carries a historical and ideological DNA rooted in the legacy of President Michael Chilufya Sata and President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. Its structures were built through sacrifice, grassroots mobilization, and collective discipline,  not through pronouncements.

The recent welcome extended to Hon. Makebi Zulu by PF structures in Kasama has clearly unsettled certain quarters. Instead of responding with political maturity, what followed were attempts to “fire” or dissolve structures that were never under their authority in the first place. Those structures belong to the Patriotic Front. They had not defected. They had not joined any parallel arrangement. They simply exercised their right to engage within the party framework.

This is precisely what many of us have warned about: no individual can seize PF structures and convert them into a personal campaign machinery. The party’s foundation is institutional, not individual. What we are now witnessing signals visible cracks in the narrative of control. When legitimate party engagement creates panic, it exposes weakness rather than strength.

The maneuvers involving the Tonse Alliance have further amplified these concerns. Alliances are not inherently problematic in politics. However, bypassing your own house while claiming to represent it raises legitimate questions. Acting first and consulting later does not demonstrate unity; it creates confusion. Presenting unilateral decisions as collective direction weakens trust.

And when these actions are questioned, attention is redirected toward the Acting President. But shifting blame does not eliminate responsibility. If unity is truly the objective, why undermine the very structures designed to preserve it?

Those who have resorted to suspending, isolating, or attempting to intimidate others simply for engaging politically do not demonstrate strength , they expose insecurity. Leadership is not threatened by dialogue. Leadership is not shaken by consultation. Leadership does not panic when members exercise their political rights within the party framework.

It is deeply ironic that some of the loudest voices today are complaining about not being consulted when they were removed from MCC WhatsApp groups. Yet those same individuals did not consider consultation necessary before publicly attacking party leadership or engaging external formations. They did not brief their committees when aligning themselves with uncertain political pathways. Consultation cannot be selective. Accountability must be mutual.

Hon. Chitalu Chilufya has been clear: the Patriotic Front remains intact, and members must not be misled into following factions operating outside recognized party structures. The official PF framework remains legitimate and functional. What we are witnessing in certain quarters is not reform, it is desperation, including attempts to dissolve structures that do not legally belong to them.

Let it be stated clearly: all remaining presidential aspirants are free to interact with PF structures across the country without fear or favor. Engagement is not rebellion. Dialogue is not disloyalty. No member should be intimidated for operating within the constitutional framework of the party.

The truth many are hesitant to confront is that impatience for personal ascendancy is beginning to overshadow commitment to collective survival. Some appear willing to destabilize the PF rather than submit to a structured and transparent process. That is not courage. That is ambition without restraint.

As we move toward 2026, credibility is already being measured. Members are watching closely. They can see who is defending the institution and who is maneuvering around it. They can see who respects party organs and who treats them as obstacles.

The Patriotic Front is bigger than any single ambition. It was built through sacrifice. It survived because of discipline. And it will remain relevant only if we reject attempts to personalize it.

This is the Solomon Test. If you truly love the PF, you will protect it, even when it demands patience and humility. If you are prepared to fracture it for personal positioning, history will record that choice accordingly.

The future of the Patriotic Front will not be secured by those chasing control. It will be secured by those defending its foundation

IT IS NOT TRUE THAT WE ARE SIDELINING CHIEFS IN NORTHERN PROVINCE – MPUNDU

IT IS NOT TRUE THAT WE ARE SIDELINING CHIEFS IN NORTHERN PROVINCE – MPUNDU

THE Northern Provincial Administration has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with traditional leaders, following recent sentiments attributed to Senior Chief Mwamba alleging, a lack of collaboration between his office and the provincial government.

Provincial Permanent Secretary, Bernard Mpundu, says the administration noted the concerns “with serious concern” but moved to clarify what it described as misconceptions regarding the relationship between the New Dawn Government and traditional leadership in Kasama District.

“While the provincial administration holds the Senior Chief in the highest esteem as a key stakeholder in the governance system, the Provincial Administration wishes to dispel the notion that there is a disconnect between the New Dawn Government and the traditional leadership,” said Mr. Mpundu in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today, by Northern Province Principal Public Relations officer Sandra Mulenga.

He emphasized that since assuming office, President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration has institutionalized an “open door” policy aimed at fostering engagement with chiefs across the country.

Mr. Mpundu said  traditional leaders have consistently been included in development discussions and decision-making processes.

He underscored that that the Provincial Administration remains guided by President Hichilema’s directive to work closely with chiefs, whom he has described as primary custodians of land and community welfare, stating that suggesting otherwise overlooks existing consultative channels designed to enhance cooperation.

Mr. Mpundu said provincial authorities have worked with representatives from various chiefdoms to identify and fund projects such as clinics and schools that directly benefit local communities and the ongoing feeder road maintenance and rural electrification projects as outcomes of high-level consultations aimed at opening up chiefdoms for trade and investment among other projects.

He has since reiterated government’s support for traditional ceremonies, describing them as important platforms for dialogue and national unity and that financial and moral support for such events has remained consistent.

Mr. Mpundu further said the Provincial Administration remains ready to meet Senior Chief Mwamba, to address any specific communication gaps that may have arisen.

WESTERN PROVINCE SOLIDLY BEHIND BALLY’S PEOPLE CENTERED LEADERSHIP
—————————————————-
There’s talk on the streets, people in Western Province are talking and expressing themselves freely, it’s about the peaceful atmosphere and improvement in their lives.

That single mother in Nalikwanda and that grandmother in Liuwa are singing songs of joy as their children are back in school together with over two million learners nationwide, as a result of President Hichilema’s free education policy.

People are talking about Bally’s people centered leadership that places high premium on citizens’ wellbeing, his tireless  efforts to bring prosperity to all citizens and unifying the country as One Zambia One Nation One People.

More so, the national cake is now being distributed equitably to all ten provinces of Zambia without leaving anyone behind.
This is why people in Western Province are talking openly about Bally and his servant leadership that speaks to the aspirations of all citizens, by implementing policies that impact positively on their lives.

Western Province which was previously famous for the title of least developed province in Zambia, is now enjoying a fair share of the national cake, as CDF is indeed a game changer, devolution is taking development to the doorsteps of the citizens in communities, thus bringing positive change and improving their lives.

It’s for these reasons the people of Western Province were the first to endorse President Hakainde Hichilema’s 2026 candidature to renew his mandate for another 5 year term, and have since vowed to rally solidly behind his leadership and never experiment with national leadership or go back to cadersism and political violence of the past.

THERE’S SELECTIVE JUSTICE IN CORRUPTION CASES UNDER UPND – ACTION AID

THERE’S SELECTIVE JUSTICE IN CORRUPTION CASES UNDER UPND – ACTION AID

12th February 2026

ACTIONAID Country Director Faides Tembatemba says there is selective dispensation of justice in corruption cases under the UPND government.

Meanwhile, Tembatemba has urged the government to be transparent in the manner it utilises property that is forfeited to the state.

On Monday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court, High Court Division, ordered the forfeiture of about 71 vehicles and 21 properties belonging to former president Edgar Lungu’s son, Dalitso. Justices Anne Malata-Ononuju, Pixie Yangailo and Ian Mabbolobbolo forfeited the vehicles and properties worth over K23 million, which included, among other things, a filling station, to the state.

Commenting on this in an interview, Wednesday, Tembatemba said there was much energy focused on the opposition with regards to the corruption fight….

UPND RESPONDS TO ACTIONAID’S CLAIMS ON ALLEGED “SELECTIVE JUSTICE”

UPND RESPONDS TO ACTIONAID’S CLAIMS ON ALLEGED “SELECTIVE JUSTICE”

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has taken note of the statement issued by ActionAid Zambia Country Director, Ms. Faides Tembatemba, alleging that there is “selective justice in corruption cases under UPND.”

As a party and government committed to the rule of law, transparency, and accountability, we wish to state that such claims must be supported by verifiable facts and empirical evidence, not broad, political statements.

If ActionAid believes there is selective justice, we challenge them to clearly indicate:

• Which specific individuals involved in corruption have allegedly not been pursued;
• The public offices they held;
• The amounts of money allegedly stolen;
• Where and how these acts occurred.

Once such credible information is provided, the relevant investigative wings of the State, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), and the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), will not hesitate to act. The New Dawn Administration has demonstrated political will in fighting corruption regardless of region, status, or affiliation.

It is important to clarify what is meant by “selective justice.” The opposition has previously used similar rhetoric, at times claiming that certain regions are being targeted or that some serving public officers are being shielded. We now hear the same narrative from ActionAid. Zambians deserve clarity. If there are public officers currently serving who are involved in corruption, ActionAid must provide specifics so that due process can take its course.

We expect externally funded institutions like ActionAid to maintain credibility by issuing substantiated, research-based statements. NGOs of repute are known for publishing verifiable findings grounded in empirical research, not political commentary. Speaking is important, but so is responsibility.

Let it be clear, ActionAid is not an investigative body and does not possess forensic criminal investigative authority. Zambia has constitutionally mandated institutions tasked with investigating and prosecuting corruption. These institutions operate independently and within the confines of the law.

We urge ActionAid and other civil society organisations to contribute constructively to national development by providing evidence-based research rather than rhetoric that risks sowing seeds of discord and mirrors opposition political messaging.

The fight against corruption under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership remains firm, consistent, and anchored in the rule of law, not political convenience.

AFRICA BAR ASSOCIATION RECEIVES PF PETITION

AFRICA BAR ASSOCIATION RECEIVES PF PETITION

The Africa Bar Association has acknowledged receipt of a petition by the Patriotic Front.

Responding to Patriotic Front Chairperson for Information and Publicity, the Africa Bar Association Vice President, Rudolf Ezeani stated that the organisation had received the petition and it was under consideration.

“Dear Sir”

“This is to acknowledge your email and its attachment.”

“We shall review same and give it the necessary attention.”

Best regards

“Rudolf Ezeani”
VICE PRESIDENT (ADMIN) and Executive Director.

Amb. Mwamba, in his capacity as Chairperson for Information and Publicity of Zambia’s Patriotic Front (PF), formally petitioned the African Bar Association (AfBA) on January 30, 2026, bemoaningb the breakdown of judicial independence in Zambia.

In his letter addressed to AfBA President, High Chief Ibrahim Eddy Mark, he raised several concerns.

He stated that the Zambian Judiciary was colluding with the Executive to undermine democratic governance and the Rule of Law.

He specifically names Chief Justice Dr. Mumba Malila, accusing him of failing to safeguard the principle of separation of powers and failure to protect judges from external pressure.

The complaint cites the dismissal of three Constitutional Court judges and rulings that barred former President Edgar Lungu from future elections as evidence of clear bias.

He also highlights the shrinking democratic space and the “barbaric” treatment of political figures like Emmanuel “Jay Jay” Banda and the failure to grant due process to political prisoners where the law was being used to punish them.

Mwamba stated that the Party has written to SADC and may write to other international bodies to alert them of the threats against Democracy in Zambia as the country goes to elections in 2026.

The African Bar Association (AFBA) is the premier regional voice for the legal profession in Africa, to unite individual lawyers, national legal associations, and corporate entities. It acts as an instrument of justice to advance the rule of law, support legal processes in international disputes, and promote, maintain, and defend human rights.

The AFBA works as an agent of change to combat unethical laws, focusing on fostering a judiciary that serves the people.

Trump pushes for U.S. drone base in Nigeria

President Donald Trump reportedly supports establishing a U.S. drone facility in Nigeria as part of broader counterterrorism efforts.

The move comes alongside the deployment of 200 American troops for a training mission to assist Nigerian forces against Islamic State-affiliated groups.

Recent violence in northern Nigeria, including coordinated attacks killing nearly 200 people, has accelerated U.S.-Nigeria military cooperation.

While the Nigerian government emphasizes that the mission is focused on training and intelligence, a permanent drone base could mark a significant expansion of the American security footprint in West Africa.

STAKEHOLDERS PUSH FOR REFINEMENTS TO ELECTORAL BILL TO ENSURE A FAIR DEMOCRATIC PROCESS

STAKEHOLDERS PUSH FOR REFINEMENTS TO ELECTORAL BILL TO ENSURE A FAIR DEMOCRATIC PROCESS

VARIOUS stakeholders are calling for refinements to the Electoral Process Amendment Bill of 2026 to ensure a fair democratic process.

Speaking during a stakeholder submission meeting organized by the Electoral Commission of Zambia in Lusaka this morning, a representative of over 10 Civil Society Organizations, Hellen Mwale, has warned that removing the statutory 3-month campaign period could create uncertainty and undermine predictability in electoral contests.

Ms. Mwale says the civil society organizations want a retention of a clear timeframe or inclusion of safeguards to prevent arbitrary scheduling.

She further raised concerns about proposals to remove the official mark on ballots and restrict signing of party adoption certificates to party secretaries general, citing security and administrative questions.

And Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities- ZAPD- Director General Frankson Musukwa noted that while the bill has progressive aspects, it does not sufficiently address systemic barriers excluding persons with disabilities from effective participation in elections..

Meanwhile, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro reiterated the commission’s commitment to a transparent consultation process.

PAUL O’SULLIVAN TELLS MPS HE TRAINED PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA AS A POLICE RESERVIST IN THE 1990s

PAUL O’SULLIVAN TELLS MPS HE TRAINED PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA AS A POLICE RESERVIST IN THE 1990s

By Anele Dlamini

#SDN, 11 February 2026

CAPE TOWN: Forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan has told Parliament that he once trained President Cyril Ramaphosa as a police reservist in the late 1990s, as he appeared before an ad hoc committee probing alleged corruption and interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system.

Testifying before Members of Parliament, O’Sullivan recounted how he became involved with the South African Police Service after moving to the country as a tourist and investor. He served as a reservist and later completed a three-month trainers’ course, which enabled him to lecture recruits and reservists at a police training centre.

According to O’Sullivan, Ramaphosa voluntarily enrolled in the police reservist programme around 1997, at a time when he was a businessman and not yet serving in public office. “One of our students was Cyril Ramaphosa, who is today the president of South Africa but then he wasn’t even a politician,” O’Sullivan said. He told the committee he lectured on criminal law, police administration, crime investigation and the drafting of sworn statements and that one of the modules included the Constitution’s Bill of Rights.

He said the constitutional component was particularly significant, as the Constitution had only come into effect in 1996. O’Sullivan explained that he sought guidance from a constitutional lawyer to better understand the new legal framework, emphasising that police trainees needed to appreciate citizens’ rights and the ethical obligations of law enforcement.

He maintained that his instruction focused specifically on the Bill of Rights and police ethics rather than the full Constitution, adding that Ramaphosa had endorsed the quality of the training at the time.

Pressed further by MPs about his academic background, O’Sullivan acknowledged he has no formal tertiary qualifications. In an exchange with ActionSA MP Dereleen James, he described himself as “completely unqualified” in law or engineering, but said he holds O-level and A-level school qualifications obtained decades ago.

The parliamentary committee continues its investigation into allegations of criminality and misconduct within the police service and broader law enforcement structures.

Kim is the second child of Ko Yoong Hui and Kim Jong II.

He succeeded his father, Kim Jong Il, in April 2012 after his father died in 2011.

Since then, Jong Un has been the Supreme Ruler of North Korea, and his power is such that he acts according to his wishes as everyone follows his commands, regardless of the outcome.

Malawi receives US$28m global support to combat hunger, malnutrition

Malaw Government has received US$28 million global support towards 2025/2026 Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme.

Malawi has secured the global support through World Food Program (WFP).

The support comes as about 4 million Malawians are in a dire need of food experience in 2025/2026 consumption year.

This is due to the impact of climate related shocks which that affected agricultural production and household food security across the country.

In response to the state of national disaster WFP, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Luxembourg, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, countries have contributed US$28 million to support the vulnerable and the most affected by Hunger.

Botswana pivots from diamonds to critical minerals amid revenue drop

Botswana pivots from diamonds to critical minerals amid revenue drop

Botswana, Africa’s largest diamond producer, is rethinking its economic strategy as diamond revenues fell to USD 785 million in 2025-26, a 59% drop from historical averages. Rising stockpiles and the growth of lab-grown diamonds are prompting the government to explore nearly 70% of its unexplored territory for critical minerals like copper and cobalt.

The government aims to diversify the economy, reduce dependence on diamonds, and create new sources of revenue to safeguard economic stability. Officials highlight that high-value minerals are in growing global demand, driven by green technologies, electric vehicles, and renewable energy sectors.

The U.S. has expressed interest in partnering for mineral exploration, signaling broader international attention on Botswana’s strategic resources. Analysts suggest that this shift could position Botswana as a key player in global critical mineral supply chains, while also attracting foreign investment and technology partnerships.

Botswana’s move reflects a wider trend in Africa: nations traditionally reliant on single-resource economies are seeking long-term resilience through diversification, innovation, and sustainable development.

Lawmakers accuse US Attorney General of cover-up in Epstein file controversy

Congressional Democrats on Wednesday accused US Attorney General Pam Bondi of engaging in a “cover-up” of the Jeffrey Epstein files and turning the Department of Justice into what they described as an “instrument of revenge” for President Donald Trump.

Bondi, testifying before the House Judiciary Committee, defended the DOJ’s handling of the release of the Epstein records, stating there are “pending investigations” in the case. She did not elaborate on those investigations during a combative hearing attended by several victims of Epstein, who died in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial for s3x trafficking underage girls.

Bondi’s deputy, Todd Blanche, has previously said no further prosecutions are expected in connection with Epstein, a wealthy financier with ties to prominent business leaders, politicians, celebrities and academics.

Committee ranking Democrat Jamie Raskin criticised the pace of the file release and the redactions made to the documents.

“You’re running a massive Epstein cover-up right out of the Department of Justice,” Raskin said. “You’ve been ordered by subpoena and by Congress to turn over six million documents, photographs and videos in the Epstein files, but you’ve turned over only three million.”

The Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed in November, required the DOJ to release all documents in its possession related to Epstein within 30 days, while mandating redaction of personally identifiable information about victims, who reportedly number more than 1,000.

The law states that powerful figures associated with Epstein could not be shielded “on the basis of embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity.”

Raskin argued that the names of Epstein’s “abusers, enablers, accomplices and co-conspirators” had nonetheless been redacted, “apparently to spare them embarrassment and disgrace.”

“Even worse, you shockingly failed to redact many of the victims’ names,” he added. Bondi responded that hundreds of attorneys spent thousands of hours reviewing millions of pages to comply with the law.

“If any man’s name was redacted that should not have been, we will, of course, unredact it,” she said. “If a victim’s name was unredacted please bring it to us and we will redact it. We were given 30 days to review and redact and unredact millions of pages of documents,” she said. “Our error rate is very low.”

During the hearing, Bondi repeatedly declined to directly answer certain questions from Democratic lawmakers. She refused a request to apologise directly to Epstein’s victims present in the room, though she expressed sorrow for their suffering.

Democrats also criticised prosecutions brought by the DOJ against Trump’s political opponents, including former FBI director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

“You’ve turned the people’s Department of Justice into Trump’s instrument of revenge,” Raskin said. “Trump orders up prosecutions like pizza and you deliver every time he tells you to.”

Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s former associate, remains the only person imprisoned in connection with the case. She was convicted in 2021 of s3x trafficking underage girls and is serving a 20-year sentence.

Trump has not been accused of wrongdoing in relation to Epstein, though scrutiny has intensified over past interactions between the two men. A 2019 FBI interview cited in the released files included remarks from Palm Beach’s then-police chief Michael Reiter, who said Trump called him in 2006, when s3x-related charges against Epstein became public, and stated: “Thank goodness you’re stopping him, everyone has known he’s been doing this.”

2026 World Cup Ticket prices soar as high as $143,750

Ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup have surged on FIFA’s official resale platform, with seats for several matches listed at multiples of their original face value, even though most tickets were only recently distributed following the close of the main sales phase in January.

Weeks after FIFA President Gianni Infantino warned that tickets appearing on resale sites would likely carry hefty markups, those concerns have materialized, including on world football’s own authorized exchange.

As of Wednesday, February 11, a Category Three seat located in the upper tier for the opening match between Mexico and South Africa at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium on June 11 was listed at $5,324. The original price for that ticket was $895.

Prices for the July 19 final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, were even higher. A Category Three seat was advertised for $143,750, more than 41 times its face value of $3,450. The lowest-priced ticket available for the final on the resale site stood at $9,775.

There have been rare instances of price drops. A ticket for Austria’s group-stage match against Jordan at Levi’s Stadium in California, the venue that hosted last Sunday’s Super Bowl, was listed at $552, below its original price of $620.

For many supporters, the soaring resale prices confirm long-standing concerns about speculative buying.

“These exorbitant prices unfortunately don’t surprise me. It reflects what we know and what we fight against: many people buy to resell,” said Guillaume Aupretre, spokesperson for the French national team supporters group Irresistibles Français, which counts nearly 2,500 members.

“In the end, who pays the price? The passionate fans who end up with outrageous offers. We would prefer that this benefit real fans who come to support their team, but unfortunately, that’s not the case.”

Despite the eye-watering figures, demand remains strong. FIFA has reported receiving around 500 million ticket requests, underscoring global interest in the expanded tournament.

Although the resale platform operates under FIFA’s official umbrella, the governing body states in its terms and conditions that it merely facilitates fan-to-fan transactions, charging a 15% commission and that sellers determine their own prices.

“Generally speaking, the pricing model adopted for FIFA World Cup 26 reflects the existing market practice for major entertainment and sporting events within our hosts on a daily basis, soccer included,” FIFA said in a statement.

“This is also a reflection of the treatment of the secondary market for tickets, which has a distinct legal treatment than in many other parts of the world. We are focused on ensuring fair access to our game for existing but also prospective fans.”

Resale markets are largely unregulated in the United States and Canada. In Mexico, reselling tickets above face value is prohibited, but only if the ticket was purchased in Mexico using local currency.

Ticketing has emerged as one of the most contentious issues surrounding the 2026 World Cup. Fan advocacy groups, including Football Supporters Europe, have accused FIFA of a “monumental betrayal” over pricing policies.

In response, FIFA introduced a limited allocation of $60 tickets for official supporters’ groups. Critics argue the measure falls short of addressing broader affordability concerns.

FIFA has been notifying applicants since February 5 about the outcome of the second sales phase, which concluded in January. A final “last-minute” sales window will run from April until the end of the tournament on a first-come, first-served basis.

During official sales phases, FIFA says it uses a “variable pricing” model, meaning prices can fluctuate depending on demand and availability for specific matches. However, it maintains that it does not employ automatic dynamic pricing adjustments.

Leaked documents suggest Russia is to export Su-57 stealth jets to Iran, Algeria, and Ethiopia

Recent Russian disclosures indicate that Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet export contracts are already signed, sparking speculation that Iran could be a buyer. Tehran, aiming to modernize its aging Cold War-era fleet, could dramatically shift the regional air balance with stealth aircraft capability.

As discussions on Su-35 deliveries continue and strategic ties with Moscow deepen, the potential introduction of fifth-generation jets into Iranian service raises pressing questions about deterrence, regional rivalry, and Middle East stability.

Israel remains the only Middle Eastern country currently operating fifth-generation fighters, highlighting the possible implications for regional military dynamics.

Olympics 2026 opening ceremony sparks “satanic symbolism” controversy

The 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy were expected to begin with celebration and spectacle, but the opening ceremony has instead ignited a wave of online debate. Social media users claimed a pentagram-like visual appeared during the show, accusing organisers of displaying satanic symbolism.

The reaction comes just two years after the Paris 2024 ceremony faced backlash over what critics called religious parody, raising fresh questions about how far artistic performances at global sporting events should go.

Commentators say Olympic opening ceremonies have increasingly become grand theatrical productions meant to showcase culture, technology and creativity…but critics argue recurring controversies risk overshadowing the athletes and the spirit of sport itself.

Observers are now debating whether organisers should prioritise neutrality and unity over provocative artistic expression at events watched by billions worldwide.
