Electoral Timelines Shift as Economy Stabilises and Opposition Realigns

🇿🇲 MORNING WIRE | Electoral Timelines Shift as Economy Stabilises and Opposition Realigns

Zambia opens the weekend with movement across three critical fronts shaping the 2026 election environment: electoral administration, opposition realignment, and economic credibility.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has adjusted key nomination timelines just days before formal candidate filings begin, while opposition figures continue repositioning within a fragmented political landscape. At the same time, government has seized on fresh International Monetary Fund (IMF) findings as evidence that its economic recovery programme is beginning to produce measurable stability.

Together, the developments point to a political season increasingly defined by process, timing, and institutional control rather than campaign rhetoric alone.

🟣 ECZ Reschedules Parliamentary Nominations

The Electoral Commission of Zambia has rescheduled parliamentary nominations for the 2026 general elections from May 18 to May 20, following requests from political stakeholders seeking more time to conclude adoption processes.

ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis said nominations for council chairpersons, mayors, and councillors will now take place on May 21 and 22, while presidential nominations remain unchanged between May 18 and 22.

The adjustment reflects mounting pressure within political parties as internal adoption disputes and alliance negotiations continue approaching the nomination deadline. Across several parties, candidate selection processes remain incomplete, contested, or legally challenged.

Speaking in Choma, ECZ Vice Chairperson Vincent Mukanda confirmed the Commission acted following stakeholder requests for revised dates.

The change is administrative, but politically significant. Nomination periods compress party tensions into legal deadlines. Once the filing window opens, unresolved disputes begin carrying electoral consequences.

🔵 Mundubile Switches Ticket, Faces Fresh ECZ Processing

Former Brian Mundubile has shifted his presidential ambition from the Forum for Democracy and Development to the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP), triggering a fresh compliance process with the ECZ.

Mundubile had already preprocessed his 1,000 supporters under the FDD ticket. However, the switch automatically invalidates that earlier exercise.

Zaloumis previously clarified that presidential candidates changing sponsoring parties must undergo a new preprocessing process because supporter verification is tied both to the candidate and the sponsoring political formation.

The development introduces fresh pressure on timelines. Presidential preprocessing is not symbolic paperwork. It is a legal threshold. Candidates must demonstrate verifiable organisational backing before proceeding to formal nomination.

Mundubile’s switch also reflects a wider trend within the opposition landscape, where movement between parties continues outpacing ideological consolidation. Alliances remain fluid. Structures remain unsettled.

🟢 IMF Findings Strengthen Government’s Economic Narrative

Meanwhile, President Hakainde Hichilema has welcomed the latest IMF assessment of Zambia’s economy, describing it as independent confirmation of disciplined economic management under his administration.

The IMF mission, led by Edward Gemayel, concluded a two-week visit to Lusaka and reported continued progress in restoring macroeconomic stability.

Among the key findings, inflation declined to 6.8 percent in April, returning within the Bank of Zambia’s target range. Gross international reserves rose to US$6.4 billion, equivalent to 4.4 months of import cover, while Zambia recorded a primary fiscal surplus of 3.1 percent of GDP in 2025.

The Fund also stated that debt restructuring agreements now cover approximately 94 percent of the restructuring perimeter.

President Hichilema said the progress provides ā€œa foundation for stability on which families can plan, traders can price and farmers can invest.ā€

The findings strengthen government’s core political argument ahead of the elections. Stability first. Recovery second. Growth thereafter.

But the IMF also warned of continuing pressures, including instability linked to Middle East tensions and rising fuel costs. Government acknowledged those concerns and says mitigation measures remain in place.

🔴 Church Mourns Archbishop Mpundu

The Catholic Church in Zambia is mourning the death of Emeritus Archbishop Telesphore George Mpundu, a prominent cleric widely respected for his interventions on governance, justice, and national affairs.

Archbishop of Lusaka Alick Banda announced the passing in a formal notice issued Friday, describing Archbishop Mpundu as a courageous voice who spoke consistently on truth, justice, and social responsibility.

Mpundu served as Archbishop of Lusaka from 2006 until his retirement in 2018 and previously led the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops across multiple terms.

His death comes at a politically sensitive period for the country, with the Church remaining one of Zambia’s most influential moral and civic institutions.

THE LAMP IS BM8 AND TONSE SYMBOL!

THE LAMP IS BM8 AND TONSE SYMBOL!

The BM8/ECL Movement wishes to reaffirm to the people of Zambia that our mission to rescue this Country from economic hardship, broken promises and growing suffering remains firmly on course.

The decision to stand on the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) as the new Special Purpose Vehicle does not in any way change the resolve of Hon Mundubile to rescue the people from failed promises and untold hardships.

Over the last several months, what has resonated across the Country is not merely a political party symbol, but the leadership, message and vision represented by Brian Mundubile, BM8 and the Tonse Alliance.

Zambians have embraced a leadership project anchored on unity, economic restoration and restoring dignity to struggling citizens abandoned by empty promises.

The sustained State sponsored manoeuvres aimed at frustrating the FDD, which had initially been selected as the Alliance SPV, have only exposed the growing fear within those in power.

However, no amount of intimidation, administrative manipulation or political engineering can stop a determined people from demanding change.

The adoption of NRPUP as the new SPV is therefore a strategic administrative adjustment and not a departure from the Tonse vision. The mission remains the same: to unite the people of Zambia and deliver a Government that understands the daily pain of ordinary citizens.

ZambiansĀ  facing unbearable mealie meal prices, escalating fuel costs, expensive electricity, joblessness and collapsing living standards continue to look to TONSE for the solution

Zambians are no longer voting based on party certificates and technicalities. They are voting for hope, competent leadership and economic relief. They are voting for a leadership that listens to their cries and understands the suffering in homes, markets, farms and bus stations across the Country.

The Tonse Alliance remains united, focused and unstoppable. The spirit of change sweeping through the nation cannot be blocked by procedural obstacles or political games.

The people have already made their decision, and that decision is Brian Mundubile.

One People. One Purpose. One Destiny.

Elections: Why Mundubile And Kalaba Merge Is  Unlikely

Elections: Why Mundubile And Kalaba Merge IsĀ  Unlikely

…….Kalaba came third behind late President Edgar Chagwa Lungu of the Patriotic Front. Can Kalaba agree to be running mate to Mundubile?……..

At this point, political parties with considerably size of following (supporters) are likely not willing to join any alliance at the moment.

For instance, Brian Mundubile, Harry Kalaba , are originating from the same region. This on itself kills off the idea of having a presidential candidate and his running mate from one region.

Also, between Mundubile and Kalaba, the former Foreign Affairs minister has more experience than Mundubile in terms of contesting the presidential race. During the 2021 elections, Kalaba came third behind late President Edgar Chagwa Lungu of the Patriotic Front. Can Kalaba agree to be running mate to Mundubile?

Mundubile and Makebi Zulu is a probable because the two are from two different regions, Luapula and eastern provinces.

MAKENI CONSTITUENCY REJECTS MARK SIMUUWE’S CANDIDACY

MAKENI CONSTITUENCY REJECTS MARK SIMUUWE’S CANDIDACY

The recent primary elections in Makeni Constituency have revealed a stark divergence in electoral preference, with Robinson Kambeu emerging as the clear victor over Mark Simuuwe and Evans Kaliko.

Results show that Simuuwe failed to capture the imagination or mobilize the electorate effectively, even falling behind his fellow contender, Evans Kaliko. This electoral tumble suggests fundamental challenges in Simuuwe’s campaign strategy, message resonance, or grassroots organization within Makeni Constituency.

The clear preference for Kambeu, and to a lesser extent Kaliko, indicates a desire for different leadership or political direction among the primary voters.

Cumulatively, across all seven votes cast in the constituency primary and its wards, the picture solidifies. A total of 28 votes were cast. Robinson Kambeu amassed 16 votes (approximately 57. 1%), Mark Simuuwe received 5 votes (approximately 17. 9%), and Evans Kaliko secured 7 votes (approximately 25%).

While Kambeu’s overall percentage is lower than in the initial constituency snapshot, it still represents a commanding lead.

The significant difference between Kambeu’s cumulative votes and Simuuwe’s (16 versus 5) underscores the magnitude of Simuuwe’s underperformance.

Moreover, Simuuwe’s total vote count is less than that of Evans Kaliko, who, despite not winning, achieved a more respectable showing. This deficit for Simuuwe is evidence of his tumble in Makeni.

Diffikot has become Difficult to Understand…

By Gregory Mofu

Diffikot has become Difficult to Understand…

I still remember the first time I watched Thomas Sipalo, famously known as ā€œDiffikot ā€, on TV alongside Bikiloni. Back then, he was simply one of those comedians who could make an entire family laugh from the living room. Years later, the man has managed to do something many comedians fail to do turn popularity into political relevance.

The self-proclaimed ā€œKomboni Presidentā€ built his brand around speaking the language of ordinary people. From comedy skits to social commentary, Difficult positioned himself as the voice of the compounds, the youths and the everyday hustlers who often feel ignored by mainstream politics.

In the 2021 elections, he shocked many people when he ran as an independent candidate for Munali Constituency and came out second with over 30,000 votes, narrowly behind the current area MP and Cabinet Minister, Mike Mposha. For many people in Munali, he stopped being just ā€œthat funny guy from TVā€ and became a serious political force.

In recent months, he appeared to be building even more momentum as an independent aspiring MP for Munali. His grassroots appeal was growing rapidly, especially among the youths and komboni residents who see him as one of their own. Rumours even started circulating that the pressure was becoming too much for the current area MP, forcing talk that Mike Mposha had abandoned Munali and would attempt to contest in Malambo in Eastern Province where he comes from. Whether true or not, the mere existence of such rumours showed how politically dangerous he had become.

Then suddenly, over a week ago, rumours started emerging that he had quietly applied to contest on the UPND ticket in Munali. Interestingly, around the same time, his usually busy social media platforms went unusually quiet. For a man who practically lives online, that silence was louder than a PF cadre with a megaphone in 2021.

Then yesterday came the plot twist.

UPND unveiled its ā€œ2026ā€ platform where citizens were being asked to vote for who they wanted to stand on the party ticket in various constituencies. And there it was. Under Munali Constituency. Thomas Sipalo himself.

Now personally, like many Zambians, I have absolutely no problem with anyone joining any political party. That is democracy. Politics is about interests, strategy and survival. Even football players transfer clubs every season. Nobody owns anyone politically.

But politics is also about integrity and honesty with the people who support you.

If you spend months building support as an ā€œindependent people’s candidateā€, mobilizing citizens around the idea that you are outside the system and would be an Independent MP for all, then later decide to join Party A or Party B, basic morality demands that you at least tell your supporters openly. Not leave them doing detective work like DEC investigators trying to track a fertilizer contract.

The issue here is not that Diffikot joined UPND. The issue is that many people supported him precisely because they believed he was remaining independent. In politics, perception matters. Silence also communicates.

Ironically, the man who calls himself the ā€œKomboni Presidentā€ has now put himself in a very difficult position. Because in Zambian politics, people can forgive almost anything except feeling like they were used as stepping stones.

Still, one thing cannot be denied which is Thomas Sipalo has achieved something remarkable. From making people laugh to becoming one of the most talked about political figures in Munali, the man has shown that influence from the streets can compete with established political structures.

The only question now is whether Munali fell in love with Diffikot the Independent… or Diffikot the politician.

Trump Freezes Taiwan Weapons Deal After Closed-Door Clash With Xi — Beijing Warns of Military Conflict

Trump Freezes Taiwan Weapons Deal After Closed-Door Clash With Xi — Beijing Warns of Military Conflict

One of the most explosive issues behind the closed-door summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping was Taiwan — a topic Xi reportedly described as China’s ā€œthickest red line.ā€

During the summit in Beijing, Trump signaled a major shift in tone compared to previous U.S. administrations. Speaking afterward, he openly stated:

ā€œI’m not looking to have somebody go independent.ā€

The remark was widely interpreted as a warning toward Taiwan not to push toward formal independence under his watch.

Trump also questioned the cost of defending Taiwan militarily, complaining that the United States would have to travel ā€œ9,500 milesā€ to fight a war he says he does not want. Instead, he stressed that he wants ā€œChina to cool downā€ and reduce military pressure around the island.

Behind closed doors, Xi Jinping reportedly delivered a direct warning to Trump, insisting Taiwan remains a non-negotiable ā€œcore interestā€ of China and demanding that Washington fully respect the One-China principle.

But the biggest shock came aboard Air Force One on the return flight.

Trump confirmed he still has NOT approved a massive U.S. weapons package for Taiwan worth up to $20 billion, including Patriot air defense systems and advanced missile technology already backed by Congress.

When asked if he would sign off on the deal, Trump responded:

ā€œI may do it. I may not do it.ā€

He added that he would first speak with ā€œthe people running Taiwanā€ before making a final decision.

The revelation triggered backlash in Washington after Trump admitted he discussed Taiwan weapons sales directly with Xi Jinping during negotiations in Beijing — something previous U.S. administrations traditionally avoided under longstanding security assurances to Taiwan.

Analysts now believe Trump may be using Taiwan as leverage in a broader geopolitical bargaining game:

• Pressuring China for massive trade concessions and economic deals
• Pressuring Taiwan to increase defense payments and shift more semiconductor production into the United States
• Avoiding direct military confrontation with Beijing while still keeping leverage on the table

Meanwhile, members of both parties in Congress are now pressuring Trump to immediately approve the weapons transfer, warning that delaying military support could weaken deterrence and encourage Beijing to escalate pressure against Taiwan.

As tensions rise across the Indo-Pacific, the Taiwan issue is once again emerging as the most dangerous flashpoint between the world’s two largest powers.

TRUMP TELLS REPORTERS HE WON’T SAY WHETHER US WOULD DEFEND TAIWAN — REVEALS XI ASKED HIM DIRECTLY

President Trump refused to commit publicly on defending Taiwan when pressed by reporters.

ā€œI don’t want to say that. I’m not going to say that,ā€ Trump stated.

He continued: ā€œThat question was asked to me today by President Xi. I said, ā€˜I don’t talk about those.ā€™ā€

When asked if Xi specifically inquired about sending troops, Trump replied: ā€œHe asked me if I’d defend them. I said, ā€˜I don’t talk about that.ā€™ā€

Trump is sticking to strategic ambiguity on Taiwan, refusing to tip America’s hand even after direct talks with the Chinese leader.

Moroccan Tycoon Dumps French Plant to Chase African Boom

Moroccan billionaire Anas Sefrioui has dramatically pulled out of the French cement market after selling his only plant in France — a bold move signalling his growing confidence in Africa’s booming construction sector.

The business magnate is now doubling down on his African empire through CIMAF, one of the continent’s fastest-growing cement and industrial networks, with operations stretching across several African nations. Industry insiders say the strategic exit from Europe reflects shifting global investment trends, as African infrastructure, housing and mega development projects continue to surge.

Sources close to the deal say Sefrioui sees Africa as the future growth engine for cement demand, driven by rapid urbanisation and expanding economies.

Analysts believe the move could strengthen CIMAF’s dominance in key African markets while positioning the Moroccan tycoon as one of the continent’s most influential industrial power players.

MYSTERY TRIP! MNANGAGWA VANISHES, SPOTTED WITH LUKASHENKO IN SECRET MINSK TALKS

BREAKING: MYSTERY TRIP! MNANGAGWA VANISHES, SPOTTED WITH LUKASHENKO IN SECRET MINSK TALKS

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has sparked intrigue after quietly slipping out of the country, only to surface in Belarus in high-level talks with strongman leader Alexander Lukashenko.

A photograph published by Nashaniva shows the two leaders locked in discussions in Minsk today, raising questions back home after Mnangagwa’s unexplained midweek departure. Notably, there were no customary airport send-offs or official statements, fueling speculation over the secrecy of the trip.

According to reports, the meeting focused on strengthening bilateral ties and advancing a strategic cooperation roadmap stretching from 2026 to 2030. While officials have since described the visit as a ā€œshort working trip,ā€ the lack of transparency surrounding his exit has drawn public attention.

With Zimbabweans left in the dark, Mnangagwa’s sudden disappearance and reappearance abroad has only deepened the air of mystery around his latest diplomatic move.

Putin to Visit China Days After Trump-Xi Summit

Putin to Visit China Days After Trump-Xi Summit

Vladimir Putin is set to visit Beijing next week for a one-day trip, coming just days after the closely watched summit between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump.

The rapid back-to-back diplomacy is drawing global attention, as Beijing increasingly positions itself at the center of major geopolitical negotiations involving Washington, Moscow, and the Middle East crisis.

Analysts say the visit could further highlight China’s growing role as a strategic power broker between rival global blocs.

Michael Carrick is close to being appointed Manchester United’s head coach on a permanent basis after being offered a two-year contract

Michael Carrick is close to being appointed Manchester United’s head coach on a permanent basis after being offered a two-year contract.

Talks are underway between the club and Carrick to extend a contract that was due to expire at the end of the season, and the 44-year-old is set to sign a two-year deal, with the option of a third.

Negotiations are also taking place with Carrick’s coaching staff, and all of Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion are expected to sign new contracts to stay at the club.

United have won 10 of Carrick’s 15 Premier League games in charge, and the football leadership team recommended his appointment as permanent head coach this week

Carrick said on Friday that his future would become clear ā€œpretty soonā€. His achievements have earned recognition from the chief executive, Omar Berrada, and the director of football, Jason Wilcox, who want him to stay on.

ā€œThere’s two games to go; apart from that there’s not much else to say,ā€ a smiling Carrick said. ā€œThe situation is pretty clear for us all. Same as in preparing for the game. It’s a unique football club, a special club.

ā€œImmensely proud to have come back and been a part of it, as a supporter and ex-player. As a pure supporter, to be in a position to come back and help and move forward was important. To make a big step, and back in the Champions League is good, we’re happy with the work we’ve done so far.ā€

Regardless of whether the contract has been signed, Carrick will address the supporters after Sunday’sthe match. ā€œThat’s important anyway – the supporters are a massive part of this club,ā€ Carrick said. ā€œWe thank them for the season and the support, the last four months for me personally. Regardless of that, for what we’ve gone through and that connection. The players have felt that.ā€

Petition demanding the removal of Kamuzu Day from Malawi’s public holiday calendar is rapidly gaining support

NATIONAL|| A petition demanding the removal of Kamuzu Day from Malawi’s public holiday calendar is rapidly gaining support, with more than 10,000 people signing within an hour of its launch.

The online campaign was initiated by Mwiza Nkhoma, a US-based Malawian Professor of History and African Culture, amid growing debate over the continued commemoration of former President, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.

The petition follows controversy surrounding this year’s Kamuzu Day events, after critics accused supporters of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) of disregarding established state protocol during official commemorations.

Nkhoma says Malawi should scrap Kamuzu Day and reinstate Freedom Day to honour citizens who fought for the return of democracy after decades of one-party rule.

ā€œWe have two defining struggles in our history, independence and the fight for multiparty democracy. We already celebrate independence. We must also recognise the sacrifices that brought freedom. Kamuzu Day can go,ā€ he said.

The campaign has reopened long-standing debate over Banda’s legacy. While some regard him as the father of the nation, others point to his three-decade rule as a period of repression marked by political killings, detentions without trial, and strict control over public life.

Human rights advocates have repeatedly cited abuses linked to Banda’s administration, including the operations of the Malawi Young Pioneers and the unresolved 1983 killing of four senior cabinet ministers and politicians, widely seen as one of Malawi’s most painful political tragedies.

As signatures continue to rise, the petition is stirring national debate over whether Malawi should continue honouring Banda with a public holiday or replace it with a day marking the country’s democratic liberation. #NyasaExpress

TRUMP TELLS REPORTERS HE CONFRONTED XI ON CYBER ATTACKS — ADMITS U.S. SPIES ā€œLIKE HELLā€ ON CHINA TOO

President Trump revealed he directly confronted Chinese President Xi Jinping over cyber attacks on the United States.

ā€œI did,ā€ Trump said when asked if he raised the issue. ā€œAnd uh, he talked about attacks that we did in China. You know what they do we do too. We spy like hell on them too.ā€

Trump continued: ā€œI told him, ā€˜we do a lot of stuff to you that you don’t know about.ā€™ā€

He described the back-and-forth: ā€œThe question was asked to me yesterday what about the fact that China’s spying in the United States. I said well one of those things because we spy like hell on them too.ā€

On Chinese infiltration of U.S. infrastructure: ā€œSo what about the fact that China is putting in U.S. infrastructure code that they could use if you ever decided to come. You don’t know. I’d like to see it but it’s very possible. And we’re doing things to them. A lot of stuff to you that you don’t know about.ā€

Trump made clear the game is mutual: ā€œYou do anything we probably do. But it’s a double action.ā€

TRUMP ON MARCO RUBIO’S VIRAL ā€œMADUROā€ NIKE TECH OUTFIT: ā€œI THOUGHT HE LOOKED VERY GOOD… I THOUGHT HE WAS OUTSTANDINGā€

President Trump weighed in on Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s now-famous gray Nike tech sweatsuit.

ā€œI see Secretary Rubio in the briefing room the other day, and what did you think?ā€ Trump said when asked about the outfit. ā€œYeah that’s it. I thought he looked very good in the outfit. I don’t know if I’d do it, but I thought he looked very good.ā€

Trump added: ā€œI thought he was outstanding.ā€

The lighthearted moment comes after Rubio appeared in the full Nike tracksuit, sparking massive online buzz and memes tying it to NicolƔs Maduro. Trump kept it positive and moved right back to business.

TRUMP ON IRAN’S LATEST PROPOSAL: IF THERE’S ANY MENTION OF NUCLEAR, I THROW THE LETTER AWAY

President Trump dismissed Iran’s latest proposal with zero tolerance for nuclear ambitions.

ā€œI looked at it, and if I don’t like the first sentence, I just throw it away,ā€ Trump said. ā€œIf they have any nuclear of any form, I don’t read the rest of their letter. It’s over.ā€

He continued: ā€œThey know it. Everybody knows it. They’re not in a good position right now. They’re in a very bad position.ā€

Trump made clear the standard: ā€œThey have to do the right thing. They know what the right thing is. And if they don’t, they know what’s gonna happen.ā€

He repeated his firm stance: ā€œIf there’s any mention of nuclear, it’s not happening. They can’t have nuclear. They can’t have a nuclear weapon. They can’t have anything having to do with nuclear. And they know that. They know that very well.ā€

2024, I was robbed of becoming President of this country- Julius Malema

ā€œ2024: I WAS ROBBEDā€

Julius Malema made one of his strongest statements during the discussion.

After raising concerns about election processes, voting systems and confidence in the electoral system, he declared:

ā€œ2024, I was robbed of becoming President of this country.ā€

He said he personally stood in a voting queue for hours and later claimed EFF representatives found alleged result discrepancies at a voting station capture process.

But he also made an important distinction:

ā€œIt’s not about what you know. It’s about what you can prove.ā€

That line may be the most important part of the conversation.

Because elections don’t only require votes.

They require trust.

And once trust starts being questioned, democracy itself becomes part of the debate.

South Africa, here’s the question:

Are people losing trust in institutions…

Or are political frustrations creating more suspicion?

ā€œSouth Africans Horrified After Brutal Murder Of Santie Bothma As Two Suspects Appear In Courtā€

The brutal murder of 54-year-old Santie Bothma has left many South Africans shocked and demanding justice after her body was discovered near Rustenburg in the North West.

According to reports, Santie Bothma was reported missing after leaving Sonskyn Retirement Village on 4 May 2026. Her body was later found dumped in bushes near Dinie Estate Road on 5 May. Police reports alleged that her throat had been slit in what many online are describing as another horrifying act of violent crime in the country.

Two suspects, identified as CornĆ© Engelbrecht (22) and Roelien Hattingh (34), were arrested and later appeared before the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court facing charges including murder, robbery, hijacking and defeating the ends of justice.

The suspects remain in custody and are expected back in court on 1 June 2026 as investigations continue.

The case has triggered emotional reactions across social media, with many South Africans saying violent crime is spiraling out of control and leaving communities living in fear. Others questioned how vulnerable people, including elderly residents, continue becoming targets despite ongoing promises from leaders to fight crime.

Many citizens are now calling for tougher sentencing, faster investigations and stronger policing to deal with violent criminals terrorising communities across the country.

Some are asking:

How many more families must suffer before South Africa finally wins the battle against violent crime?

Trump Signals Cautious Approach on Taiwan Policy After Beijing Summit

Trump Signals Cautious Approach on Taiwan Policy After Beijing Summit

U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington is not seeking to support formal Taiwanese independence, while also questioning the scale of potential U.S. military involvement in a future regional conflict.

Speaking to Fox News after his May 15 summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, Trump said the United States wants stability in the region and urged both sides to avoid escalating tensions.

ā€œI’m not looking to have somebody go independent,ā€ Trump said, adding that the U.S. should carefully consider its role in overseas conflicts.

Trump also said no final decision has been made regarding future arms sales to Taiwan.

The comments came after Xi Jinping reportedly warned that the Taiwan issue remains one of the most sensitive areas in U.S.-China relations.

For decades, U.S. policy toward Taiwan has remained intentionally ambiguous, balancing unofficial ties with Taipei while formally recognizing Beijing’s position under the ā€œOne Chinaā€ policy framework.

Taiwanese officials later thanked Washington for what they described as continued American support and cooperation.

Brown Mogotsi Arrested After Alleged Staged Assassination Attempt In Vosloorus

North West businessman Brown Mogotsi has been arrested for allegedly staging an assassination attempt in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.

Mogotsi has been charged with defeating the ends of justice.

His arrest came shortly after he delivered testimony before the Madlanga Commission.

According to National SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, a multidisciplinary SAPS team executed a J50 warrant of arrest on Friday evening.

Mathe said the case emanates from the alleged staging of an attempted assassination on Mogotsi’s life in Vosloorus.

ā€œPreliminary investigations have revealed that the firearm used in the commission of the crime has also been linked to other serious and violent crimes, including cases of murder and attempted murder,ā€ Mathe said.

Mogotsi is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 18 May 2026.

The arrest marks a major development in a case that has attracted significant public attention due to Mogotsi’s links to testimony before the Madlanga Commission.

Police previously indicated that if investigations found that the alleged assassination attempt had been staged, a charge of defeating the ends of justice could follow.Ā

The matter remains under investigation.

TRUMP SIGNALS NEUTRAL STANCE ON TAIWAN SECURITY AFTER XI MEETING — HOLDS OFF ON BILLIONS IN WEAPONS APPROVALS

President Trump told Bret Baier he is signaling a ā€œneutralā€ stance on Taiwan security following his high-stakes meetings with President Xi.

When asked if the people of Taiwan should feel more or less secure, Trump replied: ā€œNeutral.ā€

He confirmed U.S. policy remains unchanged: ā€œNo, nothing’s changed.ā€

Trump emphasized his desire to avoid conflict: ā€œI’m not looking to have somebody go independent and we’re supposed to travel 9,500 miles to fight a war. I want them to cool down. I want China to cool down.ā€

On pending weapons sales, Trump said: ā€œI haven’t approved it yet. We’re going to see what happens. I may do it. I may not do it.ā€

He added that keeping things as they were would likely be acceptable to China: ā€œIf you kept it the way it was, I think China will be okay with it.ā€

China Rejects Nvidia Chips Even After US Approval

🚨 China Rejects Nvidia Chips Even After US Approval

Donald Trump says China decided not to buy NVIDIA H200 chips even after the US approved the sale.

Trump admitted that China wants to build its own semiconductor industry instead of depending on American companies like NVIDIA.

What does this mean?
For years, advanced chips were one of America’s biggest pressure tools against China.

But now China seems more focused on becoming fully independent instead of relying on US technology.

Trump also hinted that NVIDIA already has technology more advanced than the H200, showing how fast the AI chip race is moving.

This is bigger than business.
The US tried to use chips as leverage… but China may be choosing self-reliance instead.

❓ If China no longer depends on American chips, has the US lost one of its strongest bargaining tools?

TRUMP URGES TAIWAN CHIP MAKERS TO MOVE TO AMERICA — AIMS FOR 40-50% OF WORLD CHIP BUSINESS BY END OF TERM

President Trump called for immediate action on semiconductor manufacturing.

ā€œI would like to see everybody making chips in Taiwan come into America,ā€ Trump said. ā€œTo be honest with you, I think it’s the greatest thing you can do.ā€

He acknowledged the tensions: ā€œIt’s a heated situation. There is no question about it.ā€

Trump highlighted ongoing moves: ā€œAs you know, we have massive amounts of chip companies now from Taiwan already coming in.ā€

He set a bold target: ā€œWe expect to have 40% to 50% of the world chip business by the end of my term.ā€

Chips are critical for AI, defense, and future technology, with Taiwan currently dominating global production — a key factor in regional tensions with China. Trump is pushing to bring this vital industry home to secure America’s technological edge.

WHITE HOUSE DEBUNKS FAKE NEWS CLAIMS — PRESIDENT TRUMP DOES NOT DRINK ALCOHOL, NEVER HAS

The White House slammed media insinuations that President Trump was drinking alcohol during a toast with President Xi in Beijing.

Steven Cheung stated clearly: “The insinuation here is false by suggesting that he would somehow compromise himself for a toast. President Trump doesn’t drink alcohol.”

It is a well-known fact that Trump has refused to ever drink alcohol because of his brother Fred’s death due to alcoholism.

The video shows Trump participating in the formal toast with a glass in hand, as is customary in such diplomatic settings, but the substance was not alcohol — consistent with his long-standing personal rule.

SpaceX Reportedly Picks Nasdaq for Potential Blockbuster IPO

SpaceX has chosen Nasdaq as the listing venue for its initial public offering and aims to price shares as early as June 11, with trading to begin June 12 under the ticker SPCX, according to people familiar with the matter.

The move positions the company for what could rank among the largest U.S. IPOs on record.

Reports point to a possible valuation near $1.75 trillion and fundraising of up to $75 billion, driven by growth in Starlink satellite services and launch operations.

SpaceX has not issued an official statement. The timeline remains subject to regulatory filings, market conditions, and final approvals.

If completed on this schedule, the offering would mark a significant step for the privately held rocket and satellite firm.

Elon Musk broke down the high-stakes math of his decision-making at the helm of Tesla and SpaceX.

ā€œTesla this year will do over $100 billion in revenue, so that’s $2 billion a week,ā€ Musk said. ā€œIf I make slightly better decisions I can affect the outcome by a billion dollars. The marginal value of a better decision can easily be in the course of an hour $100 million.ā€

He explained the need for balance: ā€œIf you look at it in absolute terms, I would never get any sleep. I’d just keep working and work my brain harder, trying to get as much as possible out of this meat computer.ā€

Musk added: ā€œSlightly better decision could be $100 million impact for Tesla or SpaceX for that matter… the marginal value of time can be 100 million dollars an hour at times or more.ā€

On avoiding burnout: ā€œIf I’m depressed I make worse decisions… If you have zero recreational time then you make worse decisions.ā€

CRYING STEVE COHEN BLAMES REPUBLICANS FOR ā€œSILENCINGā€ BLACK VOTES AFTER REDISTRICTING FORCES HIM OUT

Democrat Rep. Steve Cohen announced he won’t run for re-election after Tennessee’s redistricting, then immediately played the victim card.

ā€œThese districts were drawn to beat me! They were drawn to defeat me!ā€ Cohen whined.

He claimed he’s ā€œnot a quitterā€ but can’t possibly represent areas outside his Memphis comfort zone: ā€œI can’t represent counties all the way to Williamson County that have nothing in common with Memphis.ā€

Cohen spent the rest of the clip listing his supposed accomplishments in Memphis while insisting the maps were engineered against him and somehow ā€œsilencing the black vote.ā€

The long-time Democrat who represented the district for years now cries foul because new maps reflect population realities instead of preserving his safe seat. Typical: when Democrats lose their gerrymandered advantages, it’s suddenly racism and voter suppression.

Cohen’s exit shows voters and fair maps are finally catching up. No more automatic wins for career politicians who treat districts like personal fiefdoms.

Archbishop Emeritus Mpundu Dies

ARCHBISHOP TELESPHORE MPUNDU DIES

The Catholic Church in Zambia is mourning the death of former Archbishop of Lusaka, Most Rev. Telesphore George Mpundu, who died on May 15, 2026.

In a statement issued to the faithful, clergy and religious communities, Metropolitan Archbishop of Lusaka Most Rev. Dr. Alick Banda announced the passing of the Emeritus Archbishop with ā€œdeep sorrow.ā€

Archbishop Mpundu was a prominent religious figure in Zambia who was widely loved and appreciated by many people, including Catholics across the country, for his humility, wisdom and fearless voice on national issues.

Born on May 21, 1947, at Kapatu Mission, Archbishop Mpundu was ordained to the priesthood in 1972 before being installed as Bishop of Mbala, now Mpika Diocese, in 1987.

He served as Bishop of Mbala for 19 years before being appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Lusaka in 2004. In 2006, he became Archbishop of Lusaka, a position he held until his retirement in 2018.

During his episcopal ministry, Archbishop Mpundu also served several terms as President of the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB). He was respected for his strong advocacy on governance, social justice and national affairs, often speaking boldly on matters affecting the nation.

Archbishop Banda described the late cleric as a courageous shepherd who guided the faithful with compassion and wisdom while standing firmly for truth and justice.

The Archdiocese of Lusaka has directed all parishes and religious communities to offer Masses of Suffrage for the repose of Archbishop Mpundu’s soul.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.

MUNDUBILE SWITCHES POLITICAL PARTY, TO UNDERGO FRESH PREPROCESSING EXERCISE

MUNDUBILE SWITCHES POLITICAL PARTY, TO UNDERGO FRESH PREPROCESSING EXERCISE

Former Mporokoso member of Parliament Brian Mundubile has switched from standing on the Forum for Democracy and Development FDD party ticket to National Reconciliation Party for
Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) as an aspiring candidate for the August 13, 2026 General election.

This means that Mr. Mundubile will need to present 1000 supporters at a go to be processed by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) before filling in his nomination.

Mr. Mundubile had his supporters preprocessed by the Commission as an FDD Presidential aspiring candidate but his move to switch has automatically nullified the prepocessing earlier done.

In response to a query by Diamond News,  the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis earlier clarified that presidential candidates who paid nomination fees and had their 1,000 supporters preprocessed under one political party, but later decide to contest under another party, will be required to undergo a fresh preprocessing exercise.

Ms. Zaloumis said the supporters initially preprocessed were tied to the original candidate and party.

ECZ MANOEUVRES WILL NOT STOP TONSE PAMODZI COALITION!- Elias Kamanga

ECZ MANOEUVRES WILL NOT STOP TONSE PAMODZI COALITION!

By Elias Kamanga

The recent actions and pronouncements by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) are increasingly raising serious concerns among citizens who believe the institution is slowly drifting away from its duty of neutrality and fairness ahead of the August 13 Polls.

The latest announcement by ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis that political parties forming alliances after the close of pre-nominations will be required to submit a fresh list of 1,000 supporters is clearly a calculated attempt to frustrate the growing support for Tonse/Pamodzi Coalition.

What makes the situation even more suspicious is the sudden and confusing shift in nomination dates for Parliamentary and Local Government candidates. Only yesterday, ECZ itself communicated that nominations would take place on 25th May, but the Commission has now abruptly changed the dates to 20th May.

Such inconsistent decisions create unnecessary confusion and appear designed to destabilize opposition preparations while giving advantage to those already in power.

Zambians are not blind to these manoeuvres.

Every election cycle, institutions meant to protect democracy are tested by political pressure, and unfortunately the current conduct of ECZ is beginning to erode public confidence in the credibility and independence of the electoral process.

It is encouraging however, to witness the unwavering determination within the Tonse/Pamodzi Coalition to honour the people’s overwhelming call for a united opposition.

The desire for change among citizens is stronger than intimidation, procedural tricks or administrative confusion. No amount of mingalatos will stop the momentum of a people determined to reclaim their future through unity and democratic participation.

ECZ CLARIFIES ON INCREASED POLLING STATIONS CONCERNS.

ECZ CLARIFIES ON INCREASED POLLING STATIONS CONCERNS.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), has clarified that the increase in the number of polling stations as indicated on its website does not mean that more voting centres have been created in different locations.

ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Brown Kasaro, said the increase in polling stations is not a result of delimitation, but a normal increase in voting rooms at various voting centres, a situation that is determined by the increased number of voters.

The Christian Churches Monitoring Group CCMG earlier issued a statement saying it has noticed a difference in the number of polling stations on the ECZ website and the polling district listing of 2025, with the new figure for polling stations indicating 13,529 up from 12,200 showing an increase of 1,329.

Mr. Kasaro, explained that polling stations are not necessarily separate physical locations, but voting rooms at polling or voting centres whose number is determined by the number of registered voters assigned to a particular voting or polling centre.

He said a single voting centre can have multiple polling stations operating within it, and that polling stations are not necessarily separate physical locations.

He said similarly, for the 2026 general llection, the increase from 12,152 polling stations to 13,529 polling stations does not mean the Commission has created new voting centres through delimitation.

He said the number of voting centres has remained the same at about 9,000 and that what has increased is the number of polling stations (voting rooms) within existing voting centres to accommodate the increased number of registered voters.

Mr. Kasaro, emphasised that this approach ensures that voters continue using familiar voting centres while enabling the commission to effectively manage the increased voter population and improve the voting process.

ECZ Adjusts Nomination Dates for 2026 Elections

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has revised the nomination dates for parliamentary and local government candidates ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis said the changes are meant to give political parties more time to finalize their preparations.

Aspiring Members of Parliament, who were initially set to file on 18th May 2026, will now file on 20th May 2026.

Aspiring local government candidates will file on 21st May 2026, while councillor nominations will take place over two days, 21st and 22nd May 2026.

The nomination period for presidential candidates remains unchanged and will run from 18th to 22nd May 2026.

CF NOT THREATENED BY MUNDUBILE, MAKEBI ALLIANCE – KALABA … But it’s good they have come together for opposition unity

I don’t view the alliance of Makebi Zulu and Brian Mundubile as a threat to me and Citizens First (CF), says CF leader Harry Kalaba.

And Kalaba said not even the UPND were a threat to his party.

Speaking with Daily Revelation yesterday over the coming together of Brian Mundubile’s Tonse Alliance with Makebi Zulu’s Pamodzi Alliance, Kalaba said he did not view the two as a threat, as politics was a competition, in which the CF would compete against the UPND and

MUNDUBILE COURTS DIASPORA, VOWS INCENTIVES IN FIRST 100 DAYS

*MUNDUBILE COURTS DIASPORA, VOWS INCENTIVES IN FIRST 100 DAYS*

By Tonse Alliance Staff Reporter

Hon. Brian Mundubile, leading presidential candidate in Zambia’s August 13 polls and President of the Tonse Alliance, has pledged sweeping incentives for Zambians living and working abroad, the so‑called diaspora, in his first 100 days in office once elected.

Speaking on the US‑based Political Podcast hosted by Aaron Ng’ambi, Mundubile said research shows the diaspora contributes about $200 million annually to Zambia through remittances and personal projects.

ā€œThat’s a lot of money that goes to relatives and local initiatives. Once elected, we shall give incentives to Zambians abroad in the first 100 days…we will help them double the investment into Zambia,ā€ he declared.

Mundubile promised priority access to prime land for diaspora citizens to build homes or rental properties, creating wealth and sustaining relatives back home.

He described as sad President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration of failing the diaspora by discarding policies introduced under late President Edgar Lungu, including dual citizenship and incentives that kept Zambians abroad connected to their homeland.

ā€œZambians abroad are dear to my heart. I have lived abroad, I have relatives there, and I want them to never lose touch with Zambia—because there’s no place like home,ā€ he said.

Turning to governance, Mundubile decried rising graft under the UPND, citing the farewell statement of US Ambassador Michael Gonzales, who condemned corruption and inertia.

He pointed to 61 missing trucks of medicine at ZAMSA, the controversial 51 percent Mopani mine share transfer without parliamentary approval, and Financial Intelligence Centre reports of billions illicitly leaving Zambia totalling to almost $10billion under Hichilema.

Mundubile compared this to the Edgar Lungu era, saying graft has worsened under Hichilema: ā€œECL must be turning in his frozen grave in Pretoria and we mourn.ā€

He also lamented the unresolved burial of former President Lungu, nearly a year after his death, calling it a national heartbreak for widow Esther Lungu and millions of Zambians that loved the president.

On policy, Mundubile vowed to open opportunities for youths in mining, agriculture, and tourism, sectors he said could anchor Zambia’s economic revival. His campaign gained momentum Wednesday when senior counsel Makebi Zulu formally joined his ticket, following WOZA’s endorsement, making the Tonse Alliance the largest opposition coalition with 23 parties and 10 NGOs.

Mundubile’s campaign remains under strain, however, with his passport and three phones still held by police since March 19, a matter flagged by Amnesty International, the UN, and Human Rights Watch.

PARLIAMENT DISSOLUTION SIGNALS START OF 90-DAY ELECTION RACE -MWANAKAMPWE

PARLIAMENT DISSOLUTION SIGNALS START OF 90-DAY ELECTION RACE -MWANAKAMPWE

Central Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Milner Mwanakampwe says the dissolution of Parliament by President Hakainde Hichilema marks the beginning of a critical democratic process and sets the stage for a fair and competitive electoral environment ahead of the August 13 general elections.

In a statement issued, Dr. Mwanakampwe said the official dissolution sends a strong message about the creation of a level playing field for all political players, including both established parties and new entrants.

He noted that the move effectively ushers in a 90-day race to State House, parliamentary seats, and local government positions across the country

ā€œIt is interesting to note that this is not about an individual’s physical or financial abilities, but a battle of ideas judged against our past and where we hope to see our communities 5 to 10 years from now,ā€ he said.

Dr. Mwanakampwe also paid tribute to outgoing civic leaders in Central Province, including Members of Parliament, mayors, council chairpersons, and councillors, for their service during the 2021–2026 term.

ā€œTo all our former elected leaders in Central Province, all we can say is thank you so much for your time, service and dedication to improving the lives of our people,ā€ he said, adding that they now have an opportunity to reflect on the impact of their decisions while in office.

As the country transitions into the official campaign period, the Permanent Secretary warned against political violence and lawlessness, stressing that Central Province will not tolerate any form of disorder.

ā€œCentral Province remains allergic to political violence and any form of lawlessness,ā€ he said. ā€œWith enough laws and manpower in place, any act of disregard to prescribed laws will be met with equal legal force as government has the duty to uphold the law and protect its citizens.ā€

Dr. Mwanakampwe further wished all aspiring candidates, both from the ruling party and the opposition, success as they prepare to contest for leadership positions at various levels.

The dissolution of Parliament is a constitutional requirement that precedes general elections and formally opens the campaign period, setting the tone for political activities in the lead-up to the polls.

Dr. CHIBANDA DENIES VOTE-BUYING ALLEGATIONS IN UPND OPINION POLL

By Respite Kaoma

United Party for National Development (UPND) 2026 Mufulira Central Constituency aspiring parliamentary candidate and former lawmaker, Dr. Evans Chibanda, has dismissed allegations that he mobilized and paid people to vote for him in a recent party opinion poll.

The opinion poll, which closed yesterday, was conducted to identify popular party candidates in various districts ahead of the adoption process. Voting was done through mobile phones using the *2026# platform.

Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, Dr. Chibanda said he only became aware of the exercise around 13:00 hours, making it impossible for him to mobilize supporters within such a short period of time. He maintained that participants used their own mobile phones to vote from different locations, including homes, bars, and markets.

Dr. Chibanda challenged those behind the allegations to provide evidence or report the matter to the police, stating that no complaints had been made regarding confiscated phones or any form of coercion. He further defended the poll process, describing it as a new and transparent approach to measuring public opinion within Zambia’s political landscape.

The former lawmaker said he would not respond further to what he termed baseless accusations, while referring to some of his competitors for the same seat as ā€œcry babies.ā€

LAZ URGES PRESIDENT HICHILEMA TO REJECT PUBLIC GATHERINGS BILL

LAZ URGES PRESIDENT HICHILEMA TO REJECT PUBLIC GATHERINGS BILL

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has called on President Hakainde Hichilema not to assent to the Public Gatherings Bill No. 71 of 2026, arguing that several provisions in the proposed law are unconstitutional and threaten fundamental rights and freedoms.

Parliament on Monday passed the Bill, which seeks to repeal and replace the Public Order Act, Chapter 113 of the Laws of Zambia.

However, LAZ president Arnold Kaluba said although the Bill contained some progressive provisions, it still retained serious structural defects that could negatively affect citizens’ freedoms, particularly ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In a statement, Kaluba said LAZ had consistently raised concerns over the discriminatory and unfair application of the Public Order Act and had expected the new legislation to fully comply with constitutional standards.

He explained that the association had made detailed submissions to the National Assembly during the legislative process, highlighting constitutional and human rights concerns, but those concerns were not sufficiently addressed.

Kaluba said while the Bill introduced some progressive measures compared to the existing law, it still maintained several problematic provisions, including a quasi-permit regime, the criminalisation of peaceful assembly, excessively broad discretionary powers of restriction, inadequate appeal mechanisms, discriminatory exemptions, and the failure to recognise spontaneous gatherings.

He warned that the shortcomings made the proposed legislation constitutionally deficient.

Kaluba further argued that Sections 6, 8 and 13 of the Bill effectively reintroduced a permit regime that had already been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in the landmark 1995 case of Christine Mulundika and 7 Others v The People.

According to Kaluba, those rights are further protected under Articles 20, 21 and 23 of the Constitution.

ā€œIn light of the foregoing concerns, LAZ respectfully calls upon His Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema, to withhold assent to the Bill, as several of its provisions are inconsistent with the Constitution,ā€ Kaluba said.

He added that the matter was especially important as the country prepared for the August 2026 general elections, stressing that further engagement and consultations should be undertaken before the Bill is presented for presidential assent.

SKY SHIELD: ISRAEL’S GIANT ā€œDRONE NETā€ WAR DEFENCE STUNS BORDER

SKY SHIELD: ISRAEL’S GIANT ā€œDRONE NETā€ WAR DEFENCE STUNS BORDER

In a dramatic new twist to the escalating conflict on the Israel-Lebanon frontier, the Israel Defense Forces has reportedly rolled out a colossal anti-drone defence system using massive mesh netting to protect troops, vehicles and military positions from deadly Hezbollah FPV drone strikes.

According to online military intelligence reports, nearly 158,000 square metres of protective netting have already been deployed with an additional 188,000 square metres expected soon. The combined coverage is believed to be roughly equal to 20 full-size football pitches.

While the system may appear surprisingly low-tech compared to sophisticated missile defences, military observers say the giant mesh barriers are proving highly effective against fast-moving first-person-view kamikaze drones increasingly used in modern warfare.

The move highlights growing fears over the expanding drone threat in the volatile Middle East conflict, where cheap unmanned aircraft are reshaping battlefield tactics at terrifying speed.
