“Justice Denied”: Pardon of Child Defiler Sparks Outrage and Grief… Mother Cries for Help as Pardoned Offender Walks Free After Just a Year

“Justice Denied”: Pardon of Child Defiler Sparks Outrage and Grief
……. Mother Cries for Help as Pardoned Offender Walks Free After Just a Year

When Ms. Sara Kunda opened the door to visitors this week, her eyes told the story long before her words did a story of unbearable pain, betrayal, and a justice system that has failed her and her only daughter.

Years ago, Ms. Kunda’s young daughter was brutally defiled by a man known in the community as Kabinda. The case went to court, and justice seemed to prevail when the perpetrator was convicted and handed a 30-year prison sentence. But that promise of justice was short-lived.

On African Freedom Day, the convicted defiler was among those pardoned by President Hakainde Hichilema just a year and a few months into his sentence.

The mother’s face crumples in grief as she recounts the day she learned her child’s abuser had walked free.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she says, tears streaming down her face. “They said 30 years. We believed the nightmare was over.”

Instead, the nightmare has deepened. The child, now living with trauma-induced anxiety, no longer attends school. She battles severe emotional and physical complications, including vision problems and chronic pain that requires daily sanitary care a heartbreaking burden for a mother surviving on piecework.

“She can’t even look men in the face,” Ms. Kunda says. “She doesn’t sleep. She jumps when she hears footsteps.”

Despite multiple visits to the Department of Social Welfare, Ms. Kunda says no tangible help has been offered. She remains alone in her fight not only for her daughter’s recovery but now for her dignity as a mother who did everything right, only to see the system betray her.

Human rights advocate Remmy Kangwa, who visited the family, described the experience as “shattering.”

“I watched her cry and realized the person who could hear her pain the one with the power to make it right is the same person who set the abuser free,” Kangwa wrote in a now-viral social media post. “It broke me.”

Legal experts and women’s rights organizations are now questioning the criteria used in presidential pardons especially those involving convicted child sexual offenders.

“What message are we sending?” asked lawyer and child rights activist Angela Mumba. “That a child’s trauma is worth just one year of time served? That political symbolism on a national holiday overrides justice for victims?”

While Zambia’s constitution gives the president discretionary powers to issue pardons, critics argue such decisions must be guided by transparent standards, particularly when it comes to violent crimes against women and children.

Kangwa is now appealing to NGOs, churches, and individuals to step in where the system has failed. The child, he says, desperately needs to be placed in a special school where she can receive trauma-informed care and vision support. He has pledged to provide lenses to help prevent further vision loss but says more hands and hearts are needed.

“This girl deserves to know that not everyone is bad,” he said. “We have to show her that there is still good in this world.”

The call has gone out to the Vice President, who, as a woman and mother, may be uniquely placed to understand the gravity of the situation. Civil society organizations are demanding that presidential pardons be reviewed and that survivors’ voices be heard before such life-altering decisions are made.

For now, Ms. Kunda continues to cry out not just for her daughter, but for the kind of country she hoped Zambia could be.

“I want someone in power to look at my child and tell me if this is fair,” she says softly. “We are not animals. We matter.”

As the public reckons with the painful consequences of unchecked presidential powers, one child’s suffering stands as a haunting reminder: Justice delayed is one thing. But justice reversed? That’s a wound that may never heal.

*WINSTONE KABINDA WAS PARDONED ON MAY 22nd MAY 2020 BY PRESIDENT LUNGU NOT HH

At the time, Winstone Kabinda had been convicted of defilement.
His pardon was granted on May 22, 2020, prior to President Hakainde Hichilema taking office—President Hichilema only assumed the presidency in August 2021.

Suggestions that the current Head of State is tolerant of defilement are unfounded. President Hichilema has, in fact, adopted a strict approach to sexual offences.

A review of the most recent pardon list from May 2025 confirms that no individuals convicted of sexual offences were granted a pardon.

CHILESHE HAILS UPND’S FOUR YEARS IN POWER, CITING DEBT CUTS, JOBS, AND CDF GROWTH

CHILESHE HAILS UPND’S FOUR YEARS IN POWER, CITING DEBT CUTS, JOBS, AND CDF GROWTH

LUSAKA — United Party for National Development (UPND) Media Team Editor, Cosmas Chileshe, has hailed the party’s four years in government as a “firm foundation” for Zambia’s economic development, describing the period as “a step in the right direction” marked by significant gains in debt reduction, job creation, and constituency development.

Speaking on The Burning Issue programme on 5FM Radio this morning, Mr. Chileshe said the New Dawn administration inherited an economy “in a python of debt” but, under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership, “over 90 percent of the debt” has since been addressed.

He recalled that under the previous administration, a nationwide employment freeze left many graduates without opportunities.

“In just four years, the government has created jobs across the education, defence, and health sectors, and continues to employ more Zambians,” he said.

Mr. Chileshe also pointed to the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) increase from K1.6 million to K36.1 million per constituency, a change benefiting all 156 constituencies nationwide. “The CDF increment has transformed communities and improved lives,” he added.

On agriculture, he noted that despite challenges such as drought, the government’s medium- and long-term measures had contributed to a bumper harvest this year.

He further stated that Zambia had been positioned as a regional economic hub, with foundations in place that would yield even greater results beyond 2026.

“The economic fundamentals have been set. We have achieved about 90 percent of our promises,” he said, citing currency stability, restored investor confidence, and the reopening of previously liquidated mines.

Mr. Chileshe stressed that the UPND communication unit would continue to highlight government achievements so that citizens understand “the economy is on the right trajectory.”

Urging patience among Zambians, he said while progress had been made, some benefits would take more time to fully manifest. “With the leadership in place, we have laid the foundation, people will soon start seeing more results,” he said.

He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to economic growth, community development, and job creation, insisting that the New Dawn government had put the country “on a path of sustainable progress.”

SAMPA AND PF RECONCILIATION, AN IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS COME

SAMPA AND PF RECONCILIATION, AN IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS COME

Of course, there is still a lot to be resolved in the Patriotic Front (PF) imbroglio. There is also the sour taste in the mouths of non partisan Zambians disgusted with the United Party for National Development (UPND) government’s dirty hand in fomenting this sordid political scheme.

It is now up to the PF to deal with the intimate details of this saga, to find a resolution that will stand them in good stead to mount a 2026 electoral campaign as a more cohesive unit, within themselves, and in alliance with other opposition political parties.

The individual behind the troubles faced by the PF in the last four years is well known, despite the shield erected by a calvary of ruling party, civil service and security personnel proxies employed in executing the wicked scheme to deny Zambia the benefits of a truly multiparty democratic system.

Hopefully this belated maturity displayed by Miles Sampa will be duplicated in all the key protagonists in this PF drama. All of them need to deal with this matter as the most urgent current business of their political careers, because Zambia needs to reset its governance. The depths of ethnic, regional and political divisions that have emerged these last four years can no longer be ignored. And the responsible party is also well known.

But the Zambian Whistleblower is under no illusions that this expectation of sobreity and maturity also applies to Mafinga Member of Parliament, and the most lame pretender to the PF presidency, Robert Chabinga. For, Chabinga needs a special kind of treatment to exorcise him of what seems to be imbecilic foolhardiness and political recklessness.

The PF will be under the closest scrutiny they have ever been. All its presidential aspirants will be under a microscope for character traits, personal integrity and political morality. It is now time for all of them to do their individual best to galvanise grassroots members, so that they can have a part in selecting new leadership. The PF should avoid fragmenting into  manipulative enclaves, which would simply spell the total demise of the former ruling party.

There is also a word of warning here for officials in the judiciary and civil service who may be induced to frustrate the PF in its efforts to resolve its leadership wrangles. The nation has already witnessed the virtual conversion of the office of the Registrar of Societies into a UPND agency for destruction of opposition parties.

Some magistrates and judges already have their names pending for future inquiries because of their handling of cases involving the PF. Zambians will be watching. Recent examples have proved that officers of the courts cannot hide behind “doing our job” if they are found to be part of weakening the country’s democratic institutions, of which opposition political parties are an acceptable and key part.

We shall all see if, perhaps, the PF leaders have learnt some painful lessons in the last four years, which can finally help make this new process a fruitful one.

Dr. Grieve Chelwa is great evonomist; I have nicknamed him “Komboni economist”.

Imperialism has its theories, theoreticians, and the media to disseminate them. The people dominated by imperialism must also have their theoreticians among the ranks of the intellectuals; first of all, economists  – those with a political sense, not economists, to serve the transnational corporations.

Economists must develop ideas based on profoundly scientific foundations and human experience and convey them to the people.

Today, economists of the people must be political economists; and politicians must be politicians with  – if it is possible  – a maximum of knowledge. Today, that is really the basis on which the fate of humanity depends, the basis on which our struggles are being carried out.

The politicians who do not understand, or do not want to understand, or who do not strive to understand economics, are not worthy of exercising their duty.

Pretoria High Court to hear Lungu family appeal today

Pretoria High Court to hear Lungu family appeal today

THE Pretoria High Court in South Africa is today scheduled to hear an application by former first lady Esther Lungu and seven others seeking leave to appeal against the ruling that authorised the repatriation of late former president Edgar Lungu’s remains to Zambia.

Last Friday, the Pretoria High Court ordered that Lungu’s body be repatriated to Zambia for a state funeral and burial at Embassy Park.

The judgement turned the South African Court into a pool of ear perforating Nkana Stadium insults coming from Lungu’s elder sister, Bertha, who opposed the decision.

A few hours after the Intercity bus terminus behaviour unleashed by ‘mbuya’ Bertha, the Lungu family filed an application for leave to appeal, stating that the court had erred in its ruling.

The hearing is scheduled for 09:00 hours before three judges.

A notice issued by Justice Potterill’s chambers and addressed to the legal teams for both sides earlier this week confirmed today’s date for the hearing and directed that any further documents, apart from possible heads of argument, be filed no later than Wednesday, 13th August 2025, at 15:00 hours.

Chikankata MP wonders where Zambia would be if current development started in 1964

Chikankata MP wonders where Zambia would be if current development started in 1964

CHIKANKATA constituency member of parliament Jacqueline Sabao, has expressed regret over lost time and opportunities to achieve greater development for the nation.

Speaking when she commissioned the Chikani Boarding School yesterday, which was funded by the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), Sabao contemplated Zambia’s developmental path since independence.

She expressed her conviction that if the country had been able to maintain the current pace of progress over the years, it would have achieved far greater milestones and would have become an enviable and prosperous nation.

Sabao reiterated that when she sits down to reflect, she only starts imagining how this country would have been heaven on earth.

“If only development in the country started in 1964 like it is now, Zambia would have achieved a more impressive milestone,” she said.

Sabao lauded the UPND administration’s significant strides in the country, citing Chikankata constituency as a major beneficiary.

She revealed that in just four years of the UPND being in office, the government has overseen the completion of over 50 developmental projects in the region, a clear demonstration of their commitment to accelerating economic and social growth.

“If this level of development had begun in 1964, we would have witnessed an unparalleled transformation. Just in the four years that UPND has been in power, we have achieved greater things,” she said.

In their five year term, the UPND administration has overseen numerous developmental projects including, free education, creation of jobs, infrastructure development, construction or improving of roads among others.

IMF SAYS ZAMBIA’S ECONOMY HAS IMPROVED BUT POVERTY LEVELS REMAIN HIGH

IMF SAYS ZAMBIA’S ECONOMY HAS IMPROVED BUT POVERTY LEVELS REMAIN HIGH

INTERNATIONAL Monetary Fund executive director for Zambia says Zambia’s economy has stabilized, with average per capita income growth of about 2 percent over 2022–24, supported by continued reform efforts.

Inflationary pressures are gradually subsiding. In 2024, real GDP growth is estimated at 4 percent well above earlier projections underpinned by stronger mining and services performance and prioritizing electricity access to productive sectors.

The authorities’ commitment to reform is yielding dividends: macroeconomic stability is improving, fiscal consolidation is progressing, and reserve buffers are strengthening.

However, poverty and inequality remain high, and the economic outlook is vulnerable to external shocks, climate events, and domestic political pressures ahead of the 2026 elections.

Government makes funeral benefits a legal right for workers’ families

Government makes funeral benefits a legal right for workers’ families!

Government has replaced the discretionary model for worker death benefits with a legally guaranteed right to funeral expense reimbursement.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has acknowledged that the reform is a major step towards enhancing social security and promoting fairness and dignity to workers and their families.

Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa, during a media briefing yesterday, announced that cabinet, at its 15th meeting on August 11, 2025, chaired by President Hakainde Hichilema, approved the issuance of the Workers’ Compensation (Funeral Expenses Reimbursement) Order, 2025, to provide for the payment of funeral expenses reimbursement to families of workers who die during the course of duty.

The new regulations establish funeral reimbursement as a legal obligation, and not goodwill, when tragedy strikes.

Under the previous system, families of workers who died on the job facefd the indignity of essentially requesting charity from the compensation board.
Cabinet has also approved an adjustment of medical examination fees at the Occupational Health and Safety Institute, through Workers’ Compensation (Pneumoconiosis) (Charges and Fees) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025.
The fees were last revised in 2021, and rising costs have been affecting service quality and sustainability.

With Zambia’s mining, construction, manufacturing, and agriculture sectors expanding and novel workplace hazards emerging, the measure will help the institute remain robust, modern, and effective in preventing occupational diseases and injuries.

The issuance of the statutory instrument will, therefore, ensure the sustainability of the operations of the Occupational Health and Safety Institute in the provision of quality services, leading to reduction of occupational diseases and injuries as well as compensation premiums.

President  Hichilema meet a bipartisan delegation of U.S. Congressmen and Congresswomen in Livingstone

President Hakainde Hichilema writes…

Honoured to have met a bipartisan delegation of U.S. Congressmen and Congresswomen in Livingstone today, where we engaged in open and constructive dialogue on a range of matters of mutual interest.

Our discussions covered key areas including trade and investment, the strength of our bilateral relations, and opportunities to deepen cooperation across various sectors of human development.

We reaffirm our commitment to fostering a dynamic and enduring partnership, one that is rooted in people-to-people, business-to-business, and government-to-government collaboration, for the shared prosperity and well-being of the citizens of both our nations.

Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia.

African Union urges adoption of world map showing continent’s true size

The African Union has backed a campaign to end the use by governments and international organisations of the 16th-century Mercator map of the world in favour of one that more accurately displays Africa’s size.

Created by cartographer Gerardus Mercator for navigation, the projection distorts continent sizes, enlarging areas near the poles like North America and Greenland while shrinking Africa and South America.

is not,” AU Commission deputy chairperson Selma Malika Haddadi told Reuters, saying the Mercator fostered a false impression that Africa was “marginal”, despite being the world’s second-largest continent by area, with 54 nations and over a billion people.

Such stereotypes influence media, education and policy, she said.
Criticism of the Mercator map is not new, but the ‘Correct The Map’ campaign led by advocacy groups Africa No Filter and Speak Up Africa has revived the debate, urging organisations to adopt the 2018 Equal Earth projection, which tries to reflect countries’ true sizes.

“The current size of the map of Africa is wrong,” Moky Makura, executive director of Africa No Filter, said. “It’s the world’s longest misinformation and disinformation campaign, and it just simply has to stop.”

Fara Ndiaye, co-founder of Speak Up Africa, said the Mercator affected Africans’ identity and pride, especially children who might encounter it early in school.
“We’re actively working on promoting a curriculum where the Equal Earth projection will be the main standard across all (African) classrooms,” Ndiaye said, adding she hoped it would also be the one used by global institutions, including Africa-based ones.

Haddadi said the AU endorsed the campaign, adding it aligned with its goal of “reclaiming Africa’s rightful place on the global stage” amid growing calls for reparations for colonialism and slavery.
The AU will advocate for wider map adoption and discuss collective actions with member states, Haddadi added.
The Mercator projection is still widely used, including by schools and tech companies. Google Maps switched from Mercator on desktop to a 3D globe view in 2018, though users can still switch back to the Mercator if they prefer.

On the mobile app, however, the Mercator projection remains the default.
‘Correct The Map’ wants organisations like the World Bank and the United Nations to adopt the Equal Earth map. A World Bank spokesperson said they already use the Winkel-Tripel or Equal Earth for static maps and are phasing out Mercator on web maps.

The campaign said it has sent a request to the UN geospatial body, UN-GGIM. A UN spokesperson said that once received it must be reviewed and approved by a committee of experts.- Reuters

ILLEGAL MINING REQUIRES A MULTI-FACETED APPROACH- HON. LUFUMA

ILLEGAL MINING REQUIRES A MULTI-FACETED APPROACH- HON. LUFUMA

‎Minister of Defence,Honourable Ambrose Lwiji Lufuma, has called for collaborative efforts from all stakeholders to combat illegal mining across the country.

Speaking during the Stakeholders Meeting on Illegal Mining as a threat to National Security at Army Headquarters in Lusaka, today, Mr Lufuma said collaboration between government agencies, mining firms and local communities will promote responsible resource management.

“We have witnessed explosive growth of illegal mining sites for minerals in Muchinga, North-Western, Southern, Northern, and Western Provinces, hence the need to strengthen law enforcement, community engagement and promote sustainable mining practices,” Hon Lufuma said.

Hon Lufuma highlighted that illegal mining disregards safety regulations, endangering lives, and contributing to social instability in affected communities as evidenced in some countries within the continent.

“If left unchecked, the growing illegal mining activities will erode national security, social and environmental fabrics as well as pose a significant threat to the economy of the nation through mineral externalization”, he added.

“The solutions from this meeting will empower President Hakainde Hichilema, cabinet and parliament to make decisive action in curbing illegal mining activities and enable the nation reap benefits from the mineral endowments across the country,” he noted.

‎And Zambia Army Commander, Lieutenant General Geoffrey Choongo Zyeele noted that despite mining being a pillar of economic growth and revenue generation, illegal mining has turned it into a serious national security concern.

‎Lt Gen Zyeele also added that illegal mining has facilitated illicit financial flows, money laundering and cross-border smuggling.

‎He further called on stakeholders to unite for a multi-sectoral response that demands stronger regulation, better economic alternatives for vulnerable communities and enhanced capacity for law enforcement.

Iran visit by SANDF chief draws fire; Ramaphosa says he was not informed

General Rudzani Maphwanya, Chief of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), has drawn criticism after visiting Iran and making statements expressing political solidarity with the country.

According to reports, Maphwanya said South Africa and Iran share “common goals,” voiced support for oppressed populations worldwide, and condemned Israeli actions in Gaza.

His comments have prompted backlash. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and the Ministry of Defence emphasized that foreign policy is the prerogative of the President and does not reflect official government positions.

The Democratic Alliance has called for Maphwanya to be court-martialed for breaching military neutrality.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office described the visit as “ill-advised,” noting it could complicate diplomatic efforts with the United States.

According to presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya, the President was not aware of Maphwanya’s visit.

Maphwanya is expected to provide explanations to DIRCO and the Ministry of Defence upon his return.

EX-ADB VEEP URGES ZAMBIA TO LEVERAGE RARE MINERALS FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH

EX-ADB VEEP URGES ZAMBIA TO LEVERAGE RARE MINERALS FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH

Former Africa Development Bank (ADB) Vice President Professor Steve Kayizzi-Mugerwa has urged Zambia to take advantage of rare minerals, including those used in electric motor vehicles, to advance its economy.

The Professor said the discovery of rare minerals shared between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo is a landmark for economic turnaround.

He made these remarks in Lusaka when he delivered a keynote address titled ‘Africa Looking Ahead: National Visions, Binding Constraints and Structural Transformation – Essay in Honour of Professor Manenga Ndulo.

This was during the Manenga Ndulo Conference on Economic Development, hosted by the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research under the theme Honouring a Laureate of African Economics, Professor Manenga Ndulo.

The event was supported by the Government of Ireland through its International Development Programme.

Professor Manenga Ndulo is regarded as one of Africa’s most respected economists and public intellectuals.

He has mentored generations of scholars and policymakers in Zambia, shaping the country’s economic thought and regional development practices.

The two-day conference celebrated his enduring legacy in economics, policy reform, and academic excellence, bringing together leading voices to honour his contributions and chart the future of African economic development.

Meanwhile, Professor Mugerwa emphasised the importance of national visions for development, noting that good aspirations and language alone will not create impact unless implemented effectively on the ground.

He stressed that African countries have agency and their success depends on internal impetus rather than external forces.

Professor Mugerwa shared experiences on the need for agricultural recovery, diversification, and infrastructure development to strengthen economic foundations.

He discussed challenges such as infrastructure deficits, corruption, financial management issues, and technical skill shortages in Africa.

Professor Mugerwa pointed to the significance of a government role in enabling private sector growth, which is critical for structural transformation and job creation in Africa.

He also addressed climate change implications, the need for better financial planning for infrastructure maintenance, and the importance of higher education in fostering innovation and economic progress.

On structural transformation, Professor Mugerwa observed that Africa’s manufacturing sector’s share of value added has not significantly changed in decades, with services growing in importance but insufficient to fully drive economic transformation.

He highlighted the vast financial needs for Africa’s development — estimated at around one trillion US dollars annually — and the limited domestic financial contribution, pointing to the need for substantial investment and innovative financing mechanisms.

The conference further explored issues relating to Africa’s industrial policy, regional integration, urban-rural disparities in housing, and the role of higher education and private sector participation in sustaining economic development.

Professor Mugerwa underscored the complexity of Africa’s development challenge but also the opportunities afforded by its youthful population, natural resources, and emerging value chains.

He further honoured the legacy of Professor Manenga Ndulo and looked towards pragmatic steps to secure Africa’s economic future amid global shifts and challenges.

Professor Mugerwa included a call to action for research, innovation, governance reform, investment in skills, and regional cooperation to unlock the continent’s potential and structural transformation.

Deported dangerous US criminals will never enter South Africa- Eswatini

Deported dangerous US criminals will never enter South Africa, says Eswatini

The Eswatini government has assured South Africa that five dangerous criminals, recently deported from the United States, will not cross the border.

The men, from Laos, Jamaica, Cuba, Vietnam, and Yemen, were sent to Eswatini after their home countries refused to accept them.

Convicted of serious crimes including murder, child rape, robbery, and assault, their arrival last month raised security concerns in South Africa.

Eswatini officials confirmed the men are held in secure units at Sidwashini maximum-security prison, about 30 km from the South African border, and pose no threat to public safety.

The kingdom has also committed to repatriating the deportees within 12 months through the International Organisation for Migration.

South African experts, however, warned that porous borders could allow the men to enter the country, prompting the Presidency to summon Eswatini’s High Commissioner for clarification. Authorities emphasized vigilance and assured citizens of continued border security.

Widow confesses to hiring hitmen to kill her husband

A North West widow is on trial alongside three co-accused for allegedly orchestrating the murder of her husband, with court testimony revealing she sought to have him killed months before the attack.

The Pretoria High Court in South Africa on Wednesday, August 13, heard a confession from accused Bafana Matotsoe, who claimed that in June 2022, Rebecca Mfolo, widow of the late Aubrey Mfolo, approached him to find a witchdoctor to kill her husband, citing marital problems. Matotsoe, a former taxi driver for the family, said that by September 2022, Mfolo called again, this time asking him to help arrange a hit.

According to the testimony, Matotsoe introduced her to co-accused Lucky Kudumane, who allegedly agreed to carry out the killing for payment. Kudumane then brought in others, including Sifiso Manana and a man named Lucas, who remains at large.

Matotsoe recounted that on January 10, 2023, Kudumane told him they were ready to act, with the deceased’s daughter allegedly agreeing to leave the gate and house unlocked. That night, Matotsoe said he dropped Kudumane, Sifiso, and Lucas at the victim’s Letlhabile home. The group allegedly tied up Aubrey Mfolo with masking tape, transported him to Letlhabile cemetery, and Lucas fatally shot him three times.

Rebecca Mfolo, in her own confession, said she hired the killers because her husband was abusive, possessive, and unfaithful, claiming he had impregnated another woman. She alleged years of physical and emotional abuse, including threats to set her alight, and said she had been forced to sleep separately with her children for safety.

Kudumane’s statement alleged that a woman named Dineo and Matotsoe approached him with the murder plot, stating Mfolo had previously sought hitmen but failed to agree on payment. On the night of the killing, the group reportedly gained entry to the house with the help of Mfolo’s 17-year-old granddaughter, who led them to the bedroom where the victim was sleeping.

The four accused face charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, while police continue to search for Lucas, who is still on the run.

SAD NEWS: ZAMBIAN BORN U.S AIRMAN DIES DURING PHYSICAL TRAINING

The United States Air Force has launched an investigation into the Aug. 4 death of an airman in California during a physical training assessment.

Airman 1st Class Syamukonka Moonga was conducting a PT test, which the service called “routine,” when he collapsed, the Air Force said in a statement.

Military training leaders and other airmen who were already at the scene — and then arriving medical personnel — began life-saving measures to try to revive Moonga, but were unable to save him.

The Air Force said it is now conducting a standard investigation into Moonga’s death to find out what happened.

“We mourn the loss of Airman 1st Class Moonga, a young airman with a bright future,” squadron commander Lt. Col. Jonathan Ely said in the statement. “His joy, kindness and enthusiasm will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with Syamukonka’s family, friends and fellow service members during this difficult time.”

Moonga is originally from Zambia. The page has photos posted July 12 of him in uniform, including his official military portrait and a photograph of him walking through downtown San Antonio, Texas, and a caption reading “Aim High Airman.”

A sergeant in the Marine Corps Reserve also died in June after collapsing during a physical fitness test. That death is also under investigation by the Marines.

Moonga was assigned to the 346th Training Squadron at Port Hueneme in California, where Naval Base Ventura County is located. The 346th provides training for vehicle maintenance and management airmen at Port Huaneme.

Thabo Mbeki declines invitation to National Dialogue Convention

Thabo Mbeki declines invitation to National Dialogue Convention

Former president Thabo Mbeki has declined an invitation to attend the inaugural National Dialogue convention at UNISA, Pretoria, scheduled to run from tomorrow, August 15–16, citing concerns over the event’s legitimacy.

In a letter from the Mbeki Foundation, chairperson Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi said the gathering was not officially convened by the recognised Preparatory Task Team (PTT) and described the branding of the event as the “first” national convention as misleading.

She criticised the absence of key inclusivity measures, such as simultaneous translation, and questioned whether the organisers represented the broad range of constituencies identified for the official process.

The withdrawal aligns with similar decisions by other legacy foundations and civil society groups.

Despite the criticism, Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who chairs the National Dialogue Inter-Ministerial Committee, has confirmed the convention will go ahead, insisting it remains an inclusive and citizen-led process.

U.S. Department of State report reveals that at least 20 died in zambia police cells in 2024 alone

20 DEAD IN POLICE CUSTODY AS TORTURE, KILLINGS CONTINUE
…….Zambia Faces Global Scrutiny as Justice System Fails Victims

A fresh wave of concern has emerged over extrajudicial killings in Zambia, with the latest U.S. Department of State report revealing that at least 20 such deaths were recorded in 2024 alone.

Though the number shows a decline from 2023, human rights observers warn that this is hardly cause for celebration.

The report details how suspects died while in police custody under suspicious and violent circumstances.

In one of the most harrowing cases, a male suspect detained at a police post in Mongu reportedly died after being tortured he never made it to the hospital alive.

Similar deaths occurred in Lusaka’s Matero and Kanyama police stations, where two suspects also died while in custody.

Police officers involved were arrested and charged with manslaughter, but as of year-end, none had been convicted a delay many see as symbolic of Zambia’s weak accountability mechanisms.

The Human Rights Commission (HRC), a constitutional watchdog, confirmed that it continues to receive alarming numbers of complaints involving torture, cruel treatment, and even fatalities in detention centers.

Reports emerged from multiple locations including Mansa, Nyimba, Chilenje, and Munali, where suspects were allegedly beaten, denied medical care, or held in degrading conditions.  https://share.google/5FcS8UkbcZitXe7pa

Despite public statements by the government promising reform and punishment for violators, the report makes it clear that impunity remains a chronic issue, particularly among security forces. Officers facing serious allegations are often suspended or transferred rather than dismissed or prosecuted.

“The culture of cover-ups and delayed justice sends a chilling message,” said one Lusaka-based human rights activist. “It tells victims and their families that accountability is optional and that’s terrifying in any democracy.”

The Police Public Complaints Commission reported a significant rise in misconduct complaints, many related to excessive force, unlawful killings, and abuse during arrests. However, a lack of follow-through in the justice system has left many cases unresolved, breeding growing public distrust in law enforcement.

Torture remains a recurring issue. The HRC documented several complaints of beatings in custody, including a case in Mansa where a man named Bunda Chama alleged he was tortured by four officers. Though he received medical attention, there was no update on any investigation or action taken against the officers involved.

Legal experts say current laws provide sufficient safeguards to protect suspects from abuse, including requirements for detainees to appear in court within 48 hours. However, widespread reports indicate this is rarely observed, with some detainees held for months without charge often longer than the maximum sentence for the alleged offense.

Civil society organizations are now calling for a complete overhaul of Zambia’s custodial oversight systems. They want independent investigations into custodial deaths, faster trials for implicated officers, and public reporting on police conduct. “You can’t say you respect human rights while people are dying in cells,” said one advocate.

Zim Coup Announcing pollice officer Arrested

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of Assistant Inspector Simbarashe Mandizvidza, who went viral after releasing videos claiming he had taken control of the police force.

Mandizvidza, described by authorities as a “rogue policeman,” is now facing both disciplinary action under the Police Act [Chapter 11:10] and criminal charges, including possible treason.

In a strongly worded statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said:

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police categorically disassociates itself from the treasonous social media videos and statements issued by Assistant Inspector Simbarashe Mandizvidza. The errant member has since been arrested and is now facing both disciplinary charges and criminal proceedings. The Commissioner-General of Police, Stephen Mutamba, assures the public that the ZRP will continue serving the people of Zimbabwe and the country’s leadership in line with its constitutional mandate.”

Mandizvidza’s arrest follows a series of videos in which he allegedly declared a takeover of the police and issued ultimatums, including ordering all Chinese nationals to leave Zimbabwe within 48 hours. In one recording, he warned that any attempt to arrest him could trigger conflict, saying:

“Hapana munhu anorowa, vanhu vachafamba zvakanaka, vagobuda. If you really love your country, support me.”

Authorities have not yet disclosed the full content of Mandizvidza’s videos but say his actions amount to a direct challenge to national security.

Zimbabwe govt creates database of retired professionals

0

The Government has developed a digital database of retired public sector professionals to harness their skills and experience for national development projects.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet briefing in Harare on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said the framework for the database has been completed, and the process of entering information on the professionals is underway.

Dr Muswere noted that the Ministry of Skills Audit and Development had also recently reviewed skills development policies, with the findings set to be presented to Cabinet.

“Review of skills development policies was undertaken and key findings will be presented before Cabinet in due course,” he said.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance human capital utilisation, including upskilling vocational training centre (VTC) staff in digital skills.

“Training of VTC staff in digital skills for the digital clinic for VTC for people living with disability in Harare, Mutare, Masvingo, Gweru and Bulawayo is underway,” Dr Muswere said.

The move is expected to provide Government ministries and agencies with access to a pool of seasoned professionals who can be deployed on key projects requiring specialised expertise.

Hunter Biden calls Melania Trump’s bluff on $1 billion Epstein lawsuit

Hunter Biden refused to apologize to Melania Trump after she threatened to sue him for $1 billion over the claim that she was introduced to President Donald Trump by sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In an interview earlier this month, Biden cited journalist Michael Wolff to suggest that Epstein had introduced Donald Trump to the future first lady. Attorneys for the Trumps demanded that Biden apologize and that the video be taken down.

“F— that. That’s not gonna happen,” Biden told YouTube host Andrew Callaghan this week. “The primary source was the interviews that Michael Wolff has been conducting, in which he has actually tapes of, I think, hours and hours and hours of interviews with Jeffrey Epstein directly.”

“And I don’t believe in guilt by association alone, but the connections have become — they’re so glaringly obvious that I think they’re trying to use other things to distract,” he continued. “And I also think they’re bullies, and they think that a billion dollars is going to scare me.”

“The fact of the matter is that if they’d like to go, I have this to say to them, if they want to sit down for a deposition and clarify the nature of the relationship between Jeffrey Epstein, if the president and the first lady want to do that, and all of the known associates around them at the time of whatever time that they met, I’m more than happy to provide them the platform to be able to do it.”

Biden speculated that it could cost over $1 million to fight the lawsuit.

Chicago Mayor Responds to Trump, Says He is “Small” and Intimidated by Intellectual Black Men

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has responded to President Trump calling him “incompetent” and criticizing his city and his leadership as mayor. He told reporters, “The President has always been intimidated by the intellectual prowess of Black men, and so of course he would speak in those petite and purile terms… because he’s small.”

According to Fox 32 Chicago, Trump sharply criticized the city of Chicago on Monday, calling it a “disaster” and signaling that the city could be next for a federal crackdown on crime. The remarks came as Trump announced a federal takeover of Washington, D.C.’s police force, citing rising violence and homelessness in the nation’s capital.

While addressing reporters, Trump singled out Chicago and New York City as cities that could face similar intervention if they don’t “get their act together.” He unleashed a personal attack on Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, labeling him “totally incompetent” and mocking his political ambitions. “We have a mayor there who is totally incompetent. He’s an incompetent man. And we have an incompetent governor there… Now I understand he wants to be president, but I noticed he lost a little weight. So maybe he has a chance. You never know,” Trump said.

Illinois Governor Pritzker responded on X, dismissing Trump’s authority to take over Chicago and taking a jab about the unsealed Jeffrey Epstein files: “Donald, thanks for the compliment! Let’s not lie to the public, you and I both know you have no authority to take over Chicago. By the way, where are the Epstein files?”

In addition to the aforementioned statement, Mayor Brandon Johnson also defended his administration’s crime reduction efforts. Johnson noted that homicides in the city have dropped by more than 30% and shootings have fallen nearly 40% in the past year alone. He accused Trump of cutting critical resources for violence prevention, including $158 million in recent funding and more than $800 million in anti-violence grants nationwide during his administration.

“If President Trump wants to help make Chicago safer, he can start by releasing the funds for anti-violence programs that have been critical to our work to drive down crime and violence,” Johnson said. “Sending in the National Guard would only serve to destabilize our city and undermine our public safety efforts.”

The war of words comes as Trump positions himself as a law-and-order candidate and signals willingness to use federal authority in major cities. Chicago, with its improved but still high-profile crime challenges, may soon find itself at the center of that fight.

Wendy Williams’ Latest Test Results Confirm Again That She Does Have Dementia

Wendy Williams has undergone a new round of cognitive testing this week, and according to People, the results reaffirm her original medical diagnosis. While the full test details remain private, sources say the former talk show host was again diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia — conditions she was first diagnosed with in 2023.

Earlier this month, Williams’ court-appointed guardian, Sabrina E. Morrissey, filed legal documents stating that medical specialists had evaluated Wendy’s neurological condition and decision-making abilities. Morrissey is requesting a pause in ongoing litigation with A&E over the documentary Where Is Wendy Williams? while those medical conclusions are considered.

Wendy’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, has been vocal about challenging the guardianship, pledging to hold those responsible accountable. Williams continues to fight for her independence, but it remains unclear how this latest confirmation of her diagnosis could impact that effort.

According to People, evaluators carried out an extensive series of medical and neuropsychological tests, as well as brain imaging scans, to reach their conclusions. These tests were reportedly thorough, covering multiple aspects of her health and cognition.

In March, Williams was temporarily released from the assisted care facility — which she once compared to a “luxury prison” in the documentary TMZ Presents: Saving Wendy — to take a separate set of tests. Sources at the time claimed she passed a capacity evaluation “with flying colors,” though it’s unclear if those were the same tests referenced in the new report.

Requests for comment have been sent to Tacopina, but no response has been received as of now.

Zimbabwe Workers Risk 5 Years in Jail For Striking – US State Department Report On Human Rights

US Report Says Zimbabwe Criminalises The Right To Strike
Zimbabwean workers who participate in strikes could face up to five years in prison, according to a damning US State Department report on human rights. The 2024 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices highlights severe restrictions on workers’ rights, including harsh penalties for industrial action.

The report, released on 12 August 2025, details how Zimbabwe’s government has tightened laws to suppress dissent, with amendments to the Labour Act imposing jail terms for illegal strikes. Trade unions have condemned the measures as an attack on fundamental freedoms.

“Criminalising the Right to Strike”
Quoting the report directly, the State Department stated:

“In July 2023, the president signed into law amendments that prescribed a sentence of up to five years in jail for organising any strike deemed illegal, which the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) decried as ‘criminalising the right to strike.’”

The law also forces workers into a 30-day reconciliation period before any industrial action, effectively stifling protests.

Labour rights groups say the government has intensified crackdowns on unions. In January 2023, Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe President Obert Masaraure and 15 teachers were arrested for allegedly planning an “unlawful gathering.” They were later acquitted in August.

Government Interference in Unions
The report accuses Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party of infiltrating unions to weaken opposition. Police and intelligence agents routinely monitor trade union meetings, while pro-government unions receive preferential treatment.

Freedom House’s Freedom in the World 2024 report noted:

“Freedom of association and collective bargaining are restricted, limiting workers’ ability to negotiate better conditions.”

Despite constitutional protections, authorities have blocked strikes in key sectors. In January 2023, health workers were barred from prolonged strikes after the government classified healthcare as an “essential service.”

Global Backlash Over Human Rights
In the UK, the State Department pointed to increasing antisemitic violence and free-speech restrictions, including censorship after the Southport attack and safe-access zones around abortion clinics. The case of Adam Smith-Connor, convicted for praying near a clinic, was highlighted as illustrative of broader concerns, according to The Guardian.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s government strongly rejected Washington’s findings. In a statement dated August 13 2025, it called the report inaccurate and deeply flawed. The Foreign Ministry accused the US of relying on discredited sources and ignoring transparent judicial processes. It highlighted UN praise for South Africa’s land expropriation law as a progressive step grounded in human rights.

Father has been arrested for the r3pe and m8rder of his 4-year-old daughter in South Africa

A father, Ethan Watson, has been arrested for the r3pe and m8rder of his 4-year-old daughter, Nikita, in South Africa.

The man and his wife appeared before the Protea Magistrates’ Court in Soweto, Johannesburg on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

The father was charged with m8rder, r3pe, compelled r3pe, child abuse and assault, whilst the mother of the deceased was charged on a separate docket, with failure to immediately report a s3xual offence against a minor child.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Regional spokesperson, Gauteng Division, Johannesburg, Phindi Mjonondwane, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

Police had on August 6, responded to a complaint of the father who was physically abusing his child in Eldorado Park community.

On arrival at the scene, they were pointed to a backyard shack that was closed. Upon entering, police found a man with a little boy and a little girl.

They noticed that the girl who was sleeping in the bed had head injuries, bruises and swollen eyes.

The man who introduced himself as the father of the children could not give a clear explanation about what happened to the girl.

The police arrested the father and rushed the girl to a nearby medical care centre for treatment where she succumbed to her injuries on August 8.

“The father was arrested on Wednesday, 06 August 2025, following a report to the Eldorado Park South African Police Service (SAPS) after a video in which the child can be heard screaming as he is assaulted went viral,” the statement read.

“Following further investigations, the mother was also arrested. It is alleged that the mother of the deceased knew about the s3xual assault but failed to report to the authorities, as per duty in terms of the S3xual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Act 32 of 2007.

“A neighbour is said to have heard the deceased child screaming from the couple’s home and, on arrival, found the father allegedly beating the child and captured the incident on a phone.

“The video was circulated, leading to SAPS being summoned to the scene. They were both remanded in custody until August 18, for them to apply for bail.

“The recent spike in parents facing allegations of k!lling and abusing their children is of grave concern to the NPA, and we remain resolute in our efforts to promote children’s rights and safety. Our children are dependent on us to be their voice, and we will stop at nothing to ensure that justice prevails.”

Husband suffocated to de@th by 100kg wife after she fell out of bed on top of him

A man’s life has been cut short after his 220lb wife lost her balance and fell on him in a tragic accident.

The tragic events occurred on Monday, August 11, in Campanha on the outskirts of Porto, Portugal.

The 59-year-old was reportedly smothered to death after his wife fell out of bed and got wedged against a wall.

It was gathered that the woman stumbled as she got out of bed and crushed her partner, who had been lying on the floor.

Neighbours were alerted to the tragic situation by the woman’s screams after she became trapped between the bed and the wall.

They are said to have rushed to their help in the early hours of Monday morning, August 11. The neighbours managed to lift her off him, but he was already unconscious by the time firefighters and paramedics got there.

Efforts of medical responders to revive him after he went into cardiac arrest were unsuccessful.

The woman’s weight is believed to be a key factor in why she was unable to get up after getting trapped.

It took five men to lift her off her partner, Portuguese daily Correio da Manha has reported.

Portuguese cops have investigated, but determined it was a freak accident and ruled out foul play.

One source close to the investigation said: “It’s been categorised as an accidental asphyxia.

“It’s obviously a very unusual death but there was no criminal intent.

“It was a stumble by the woman as she got out of bed and tried to move closer to her husband who was lying on the floor that led to what happened.”

The dead man’s partner is understood to have been offered grief counselling.

They had lived together as husband and wife for several years, according to local media reports.

However, they had not been formally married.

Trump warns Putin that there will be ‘VERY severe consequences’ if Russia does not stop the war

0

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned President Vladimir Putin that there will be very severe consequences if Russia does not agree to stop the war in Ukraine after their meeting on Friday.

Trump made the warning against the dictator today, saying he was yet to be convinced he would be able to persuade Putin to stop killing civilians.

Mr Trump cautioned that if he ‘doesn’t get the answers’ he needs on Friday ‘then we’re not going to have a second meeting’.

Asked if Russia will face consequences in that scenario, Mr Trump said: ‘Yes, they will. There will be consequences.’

Asked if that would be sanctions or tariffs, Trump said: ‘I don’t have to say. There will be very severe consequences.’

But he hoped that there would be a ‘quick second meeting’ following the summit between Putin, Zelensky ‘and myself if they’d like to have me there’.

Describing the purpose of Alaska, Mr Trump said it was ‘to find out where we are and what we are doing’ before a ‘more productive meeting’ with the Ukrainian president.

It is hoped that this second summit would take place in a neutral European country.

It also emerged that Trump is planning to offer Putin access to rare earth minerals to incentivise him to end the war, including opening up Alaska’s natural resources to Moscow and lifting some sanctions.

It may also include giving Russia access to the rare earth minerals in the Ukrainian territories under their occupation, the Telegraph reported.

US vice president, JD Vance today said the US President had vowed that they would ‘bring peace to Europe’ in a speech at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.

He channelled the spirit of how America and Britain had brought peace by victory in World War Two after spending the week with Foreign Secretary David Lammy at Chevening House in Kent.

Describing what he and Mr Lammy had discussed, the Vice President said: ‘What we did is we worked on one of our most important shared security goals in Europe, which is the end of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

‘The President of the United States came in six months ago, and I just talked to him right before I came on the stage, and he said very simply that we are going to make it our mission as an administration to bring peace to Europe once again.’

Melania Trump threatens to sue Hunter Biden for $1 billion

US First Lady, Melania Trump, is threatening to sue Hunter Biden for $1 billion after he made the false claim that she was introduced to President Donald Trump by serial pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Trump’s lawyer demanded that Biden ‘immediately retract the false, defamatory, disparaging, and inflammatory statements made about Mrs. Trump.’

The younger Biden had parroted claims first made by Fire and Fury author Michael Wolff, who appeared on a Daily Beast podcast in late July, and said both Epstein and the president were involved with a ‘model agent’ who introduced Trump to the first lady.

The Daily Beast published Wolff’s claims in a story and has since apologized for it.

The 55-year-old son of former President Joe Biden made a follow-up appearance on Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan on August 5 and let the allegations rip.

‘They knew each other well, they spent an enormous amount of time together,’ Biden said of Donald Trump and Epstein. ‘According to his biographer, Jeffrey Epstein introduced Melania, that’s how Melania .. the first lady and the president, met.’

In a letter addressed to Biden and his longtime lawyer Abbe Lowell, the first lady’s lawyer Alejandro Brito called Biden’s comments ‘false, defamatory, and lewd.’

‘Given your vast history of trading on the names of others, including your surname-for your personal benefit, it is obvious that you published these false and defamatory statements about Mrs. Trump to draw attention to yourself,’ Brito wrote in a letter, first obtained by Fox News.

The letter was dated August 6 and gave the younger Biden until August 7 to comply.

As of Wednesday night, that specific episode of Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan remained on YouTube.

‘These false, disparaging, defamatory, and inflammatory statements are extremely salacious and have been widely disseminated throughout various digital mediums,’ the first lady’s attorney said.

‘Indeed, the Video has since been re-published by various media outlets, journalists, and political commentators with millions of social media followers that have disseminated the false and defamatory statements therein to tens of millions of people worldwide,’ he continued.

‘Consequently, you have caused Mrs. Trump to suffer overwhelming financial and reputational harm,’ Brito added.

The lawyer asked Biden to ‘immediately issue a full and fair retraction of the Video and any and all other false, defamatory, disparaging, misleading, and inflammatory statements about Mrs. Trump in as conspicuous a manner as they were originally published.’

The former first son must also ‘immediately issue an apology for the false, defamatory, disparaging, misleading, and inflammatory statements about Mrs. Trump,’ Brito said.

The lawyer warned in the letter that if Biden didn’t meet the first lady’s demands ‘Mrs. Trump will be left with no alternative but to enforce her legal and equitable rights, all of which are expressly reserved and are not waived, including by filing legal action for over $1 Billion Dollars in damages.’

‘You are on notice,’ Brito concluded.

Her East Wing spokesperson Nick Clemens added: ‘First Lady Melania Trump’s attorneys are actively ensuring immediate retractions and apologies by those who spread malicious, defamatory falsehoods.’

‘The true account of how the First Lady met President Trump is in her best-selling book, “Melania,”‘ he added in a statement to the Daily Mail.

Russia has announced partial restrictions on voice calls made through WhatsApp and Telegram

0

Russia has announced partial restrictions on voice calls made through WhatsApp and Telegram, citing efforts to combat crime, state media reported on Wednesday, August 13.

The communications watchdog Roskomnadzor said the measure was necessary because the foreign messaging apps had become “the main voice services used for fraud and extortion, and for involving Russian citizens in subversive and terrorist activities.” Russian security services have repeatedly claimed that Ukraine uses Telegram to recruit individuals or carry out acts of sabotage within Russia.

Moscow is demanding that messaging platforms provide law enforcement access to user data, not only for fraud investigations but also for cases it labels as terrorism-related. The digital ministry said the restrictions would be lifted once the companies comply with Russian legislation.

Telegram, in a statement to AFP, said it “actively combats misuse” of its platform, including calls for sabotage, violence, and fraud, removing “millions of pieces of harmful content every day.” WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, condemned the move, with a spokesperson stressing that the app’s end-to-end encryption protects private communication and defies government attempts to compromise security.

“WhatsApp is private, end-to-end encrypted, and defies government attempts to violate people’s right to secure communication, which is why Russia is trying to block it from over 100 million Russian people,” the spokesperson said.

More than 100 million people in Russia rely on WhatsApp for calls and messages, and the platform expressed concern that the restrictions are aimed at forcing users toward services more susceptible to government surveillance.

Since its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has sharply curtailed press freedom and tightened controls over online speech.

Chelsea to donate portion of £11.4million Club World Cup bonuses to Diogo Jota’s family

0

Chelsea players will donate part of their Club World Cup bonuses to the family of the late Diogo Jota, who died last month aged 28.

Enzo Maresca’s 24-man squad for the tournament is set to receive a combined bonus of £11.4m for winning the competition.

But in an incredible show of class, Blues stars have opted to give up part of their bonuses to raise funds for the widow of Jota, who tragically was killed in a car crash with his brother Andre Silva and his three children.

It’s unclear what percentage of their bonuses players will donate to Jota’s family.

Each player is set to take home £475,000 for their role in winning the tournament.

But their total bonus was set to be reduced by tax and social security costs prior to their generous offerings to Jota’s family.

Liverpool is also set to immortalise their former Portuguese winger, who was a fan favourite, with a sculpture outside Anfield.

The Kop club will pay tribute to the late Jota ahead of their Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Friday with a minute’s silence.

The players will wear a tribute for their former team-mate in each game of the 2025/26 season in the form of a ‘Forever 20’ emblem on their shirts.

Jota’s No.20 shirt has been retired by the club across all levels in a touching tribute to Jota, who scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds.

FSG CEO Michael Edwards said of the decision: “As a club, we were all acutely aware of the sentiment of our supporters – and we felt exactly the same way.

“It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision and to ensure they were the first to know of our intention. I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual.

“Diogo joined us in 2020, he won us number 20, and he wore – with honour, distinction and affection – the number 20.

“As far as Liverpool Football Club is concerned, he will be forever our number 20.”

Church Mother Body Speaks Out on Lungu Burial Dispute

LUSAKA – The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) has broken its silence on the ongoing impasse over the burial of late former President Edgar Lungu, condemning remarks by Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha that the State could proceed with burial without the family’s involvement.

EFZ Board Chairperson, Bishop Paul Mususu, described the Attorney General’s position as “brutal” and warned that such an approach would be both immoral and inconsistent with Zambia’s cultural values.

He said that even after the court ruling allowing the body to be repatriated to Zambia, government must keep engaging the family to ensure a dignified process.

“Regardless of the court’s judgment on Friday or any other date, dialogue must continue,” said Bishop Mususu during Radio Christian Voice’s Chatback programme, where he discussed the “Role of the Church in the ECL Burial Impasse.”

The EFZ leader also lamented the level of mockery surrounding the burial dispute, urging citizens to maintain respect during the mourning period.

“We must return to our tradition of respecting the dead and resolving disputes after burial,” he said.

Bishop Mususu’s comments come as pressure mounts on government to find common ground with the Lungu family and uphold unity in the nation.

Plan B or Political Daydream? Dr. Zumani Zimba, You Failed ECL in 2021 Can You Defeat HH Now?

Plan B or Political Daydream? Dr. Zumani Zimba, You Failed ECL in 2021 Can You Defeat HH Now?

Tobbius Chilembo Hamunkoyo – LLB

As we watch the infighting from within the Tonse Alliance, allow me to respond to what Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba has written.

The public is, quite frankly, enjoying the drama of succession playing out in an alliance that believes it stands a chance of defeating the UPND in 2026.

The reality is that the UPND is now grounded , like it or not, it is scoring and winning on the political field, through CDF, cash for work , free education and other developmental milestones. Against this backdrop, these “Plan B” stories seem less like strategy and more like a political soap opera baba.

Dr. Zimba’s latest claims about a so-called “Plan B” for the 2026 presidential elections are not only speculative but dangerously misleading. Without a signed, documented, and formally adopted agreement, everything he is saying remains political gossip dressed up as fact.

We know that it is nothing more than a narrative aimed at creating false hope in the hearts of those desperate to see UPND unseated.

Let us remember this Dr Chris Zumani Zimba , the Tonse Alliance was a political alliance, not a personal or family trust. It was built by multiple stakeholders , political parties, civic organisations, and other interest groups, each with equal rights in decision-making. It was never created to be a family inheritance passed around like private property.

This raises a crucial question,  Does Mama Esther Lungu hold any official position in the Tonse Alliance or PF party? If the answer is “no,” then her presence in private discussions cannot give her legal or political authority to dictate leadership choices for the alliance in the absence of his husband. In my view political power is not transferred through marriage ties  it is decided through party and alliance constitutions.

And now, the public can begin to connect the dots. Dr. Zimba’s own revelations place Mama Esther Lungu at the very heart of the so-called “Plan B.” This sheds new light on her recent refusal to allow President Hakainde Hichilema to view her husband’s body and also to bury her late husband in south Africa privately. Many are now concluding that this is not simply about mourning , it appears there is political calculation at play. Chris Zumani Zimba has effectively confirmed that Mama Esther is central to the succession controversy and that her stance on the repatriation of ECL’s remains may be tied to these political manoeuvres. There must be something more to this than meets the eye.

Dr. Zimba’s romanticised story of private weekly meetings, secret candidate reviews, and confidential strategy sessions between himself and the late President is irrelevant in the absence of formal alliance approval.

It must be noted that in politics, a private conversation, no matter how serious, is not the same as a binding political decision. The alliance constitution, not your living room chats, decides leadership.

Now let us address the elephant in the room, Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba, you were the Presidential Political Adviser to Edgar Chagwa Lungu in 2021. You had all the instruments of state power ,the presidency, the government machinery, the ruling party structures, and an incumbent advantage. Yet, you still failed to defeat Hakainde Hichilema. You oversaw a campaign that lost not just the presidency, but also critical parliamentary seats.

If you could not defeat HH when you were sitting in State House with every tool of political mobilisation at your disposal, do you honestly believe you can beat him now, without power, without incumbency, and in a political environment where the UPND is more grounded, more organised, and delivering visible wins?

Your own submission confirms what the ruling party, through its Media Director Mark Simuuwe, has repeatedly said,  that today there is no opposition in Zambia capable of defeating Hakainde Hichilema. By publicly promoting speculative and divisive “succession dramas” instead of building real unity and strategy, you are not only weakening your own alliance, you are weakening democracy in the country. A strong democracy needs a strong and credible opposition, not one consumed by gossip and internal battles.

The truth is this, Without documented proof, formal endorsement from all Tonse Alliance members, and a concrete strategy that addresses why you failed in 2021, your so-called “Plan B” is nothing more than a political daydream. In my view, the Tonse Alliance is bigger than you, bigger than the Lungu family, and bigger than any secret wish ECL may have had.

Your narrative risks misleading the public, dividing your alliance, and all but guaranteeing an easy victory for HH in 2026 and claiming that UPND rigged some elections. If Tonse truly wants to compete, it must focus on unity, clear strategy, and constitutional processes ,not only in its alliance but also the country at large,  not whispered promises from a political adviser who already failed at the highest level.

Precedent, Lungu’s Burial Site and the Cost of HH’s Daily Trekking – Thandiwe Ketiš Ngoma

EDITOR’S CHOICE- Precedent, Lungu’s Burial Site and the Cost of HH’s Daily Trekking

By Thandiwe Ketiš Ngoma

In the heated debate over where the late President Edgar Chagwa Lungu should be buried, President Hakainde Hichilema and his supporters have argued that precedent and tradition dictate he must be interred at Embassy Park. They insist that all former presidents rest there; therefore, Lungu’s burial should be no exception, even though no law compels it.

But if precedent and tradition are to be treated as binding, then that same principle must apply to President Hichilema himself. The precedent for where Zambia’s sitting presidents reside is crystal clear. Since 1935, every head of state, including colonial governors and all six of Hichilema’s predecessors, has lived in Nkwazi House, the official presidential residence. This house was purpose-built for the presidency to avoid unnecessary costs and ensure state security.

If HH truly believes that precedent and tradition must be followed regardless of law, then he should have moved into Nkwazi House upon taking office, just as his predecessors did. Instead, he has chosen to remain in his private residence, creating massive and ongoing costs for taxpayers.

The Cost of Breaking Tradition

Unlike the burial of President Lungu, where, if his family chooses to lay him to rest outside Zambia, the state bears no expense, Hichilema’s choice to ignore the tradition of living in Nkwazi House is costing the public heavily every single day.

HH reportedly undertakes up to six trips daily between his private home and State House. The presidential motorcade collects him in the morning ( Trip 1), takes him to State House (Trip 2), returns him home for lunch (Trip 3), takes him back to State House afterwards (Trip 4), drives him home again after work (Trip 5), and then finally makes a last trip to return the convoy to its base (Trip 6).

Each journey burns through state fuel, requires multiple escort vehicles, and demands the deployment of police officers to line the route for presidential security. These operations are expensive, unbudgeted for, and entirely avoidable. Nkwazi House exists precisely to eliminate such wastage.

A Question of Lawfulness

Government expenditures must be grounded in law. When public funds are spent to support what is effectively the president’s private preference rather than an official requirement, this falls into dangerous territory. Whoever authorises such spending could be guilty of abuse of office. The president himself, as the direct beneficiary, risks being seen as complicit in misusing state resources, which is a serious charge both legally and ethically.

The cost does not stop with transport. Significant taxpayer funds have also been spent on security upgrades to the president’s private residence. Nkwazi House already has such measures in place; no additional expense would have been necessary had HH moved in.

If the argument is that Nkwazi House was in disrepair, then the Ministry of Works and Supply should have rehabilitated it as a matter of public duty for the benefit of the current and future presidents. Instead, the upgrades have been diverted to a private property, which creates an awkward legal and political risk. Future governments could claim the property as state-owned due to the public investment, or HH could face allegations of abuse of office after leaving power.

Precedent Cannot Be Selective

It is inconsistent to demand that President Lungu be buried at Embassy Park in the name of tradition while ignoring a much older and more established tradition of where the sitting head of state resides. If we are to hold one leader to precedent, we must hold all leaders to precedent.

Tradition, by its nature, cannot be selectively enforced. Either it binds everyone, or it binds no one. If HH is unwilling to follow the tradition of living in the official residence, it is hypocritical for him to demand that Lungu’s family should follow the tradition of burial at Embassy Park, especially when his own choice costs the public far more than the alternative.

Zambia deserves consistency. If precedent is to matter, let it matter in all things, not only when it suits political convenience.

ECL’S SECRET ‘PLAN B’ FOR 2026 PRESIDENTIAL SEAT EXPOSED!…Zumani Urges Tonse Alliance to Wait for Late President Lungu’s Final Wish

ECL’S SECRET ‘PLAN B’ FOR 2026 PRESIDENTIAL SEAT EXPOSED!
…….Zumani Urges Tonse Alliance to Wait for Late President Lungu’s Final Wish

As the nation continues to mourn the death of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, a dramatic political twist is unfolding his inner circle claims he left behind a carefully chosen successor for the 2026 elections referred to as “Plan B.”

Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba, Lungu’s former political advisor and Tonse Alliance national coordinator, says the former president had completed the selection of a presidential candidate and running mate before his death on June 5, 2025.

“Plan B is not a hoax but real and factual,” said Dr. Zimba. “ECL diligently worked on it for months before he passed. He knew what was at stake and was determined to protect the alliance and its legacy.”

Dr. Zimba claims the former Head of State worked through a systematic and confidential process from December 2024 to May 2025 to identify his successor, holding weekly review sessions at his residence and later from South Africa while receiving medical treatment.

Each session, Zimba says, involved analyzing profiles of proposed candidates from across political and civic sectors. Lungu’s wife, former First Lady Esther Lungu, was the only other person occasionally present during these confidential reviews.

“We would sit down weekly, just the two of us, going over names, strategies, and alliances. This was not guesswork ECL was deliberate and focused,” said Zimba.

The former president reportedly finalized both a presidential candidate and a running mate under what Dr. Zimba calls a “loyalty and capacity” framework to ensure continuity of vision and allegiance to the Tonse Alliance.

Even from South Africa, Lungu maintained weekly contact with Zimba, offering political guidance and confirming that the final decision had already been made and was ready to be revealed.

“He told me in April and again in early May that the decision was done. He had his candidates and was waiting for the right time to make the announcement,” Zimba stated.

Dr. Zimba says Lungu had planned to unveil the candidates upon returning to Zambia in June, within the Tonse Alliance framework. However, his death preempted that public declaration.

Now, Zimba believes the only people who can reveal Plan B are members of Lungu’s immediate family, whom he believes were entrusted with the final details of the plan.

“There is no need for infighting. Let’s first bury our leader and then allow his family to disclose his political will. If that happens, we must rally behind the candidate he chose,” Zimba advised.

Zimba also revealed that certain PF figures were upset after being left out of the selection process, resulting in internal tensions. “Some senior leaders never forgave ECL for relying on his advisor instead of consulting them,” he noted.

Despite the friction, Zimba emphasized that the Tonse Alliance constitution gave Lungu the authority to make the final decision, citing Article 11 and Appendix 1 of the alliance’s founding documents.

He urged all Tonse Alliance members to respect Lungu’s wishes and remain united as they await the announcement. “If the next candidate is chosen by ECL, we stand a strong chance of defeating HH in 2026,” he said.

“ECL remains our leader even in death,” Zimba concluded. “Tonse Alliance must win 2026 in his name, with his candidate, and for his legacy.”
