NPA to Proceed with appeal despite Omotoso’s departure from South Africa

NPA to Proceed with appeal despite Omotoso’s departure from South Africa

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that it will move forward with its appeal following the acquittal of Timothy Omotoso, despite his departure from South Africa on Sunday, 18 May.

Omotoso, a controversial figure, left the country amid ongoing legal proceedings, but the NPA insists this will not derail their efforts.

According to NPA National Spokesperson Adv Mthunzi Mhaga, the South African legal system does not require the presence of an accused person for an appeal to proceed. The appeal will involve legal teams from both sides, the Registrar of the High Court, and the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) as the judiciary.

Mhaga emphasized that Omotoso’s departure does not classify him as a fugitive from justice, as there are no legal grounds to prevent his exit. However, his absence means he is no longer in the country to witness the appeal’s outcome, which may take time to resolve.

Should the SCA rule in favor of the NPA, the authority plans to utilize bilateral and international cooperation treaties, including extradition agreements with Nigeria and the Commonwealth Scheme, to ensure Omotoso is returned to South Africa to face justice

The NPA remains committed to pursuing the case, underscoring its dedication to upholding the law and seeking justice for all involved parties.

Pope Leo XIV inaugurated as first American pontiff in historic Vatican ceremony

Pope Leo XIV inaugurated as first American pontiff in historic Vatican ceremony

On May 18, Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, was formally inaugurated during a solemn Mass in St. Peter’s Square, marking a new chapter for the Catholic Church.

The Chicago-born pontiff, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, drew an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 pilgrims and dignitaries, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to the Vatican.

The liturgy, rich in tradition, saw Pope Leo XIV receive the pallium and the Ring of the Fisherman, symbols of his authority and connection to St. Peter. In his homily, the 67-year-old pope urged the Church to be a “leaven of unity” in a polarized world, emphasizing love and charity.

“The Church does not impose; it proposes,” he said, calling for renewed faith in a time of global division.

The ceremony, which included prayers at St. Peter’s tomb and multilingual Gospel readings, underscored the pope’s universal mission. As the 267th successor to St. Peter, Pope Leo XIV’s papacy begins under intense global scrutiny, with hopes his leadership will bridge divides within and beyond the Church

OPPOSITION MUST SEEK JUSTICE, NOT PUBLIC SYMPATHY – NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW

PRESS STATEMENT BY UPND MEDIA DIRECTOR, MARK SIMUUWE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OPPOSITION MUST SEEK JUSTICE, NOT PUBLIC SYMPATHY – NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW

18th May 2025

The United Party for National Development (UPND) is compelled to address the growing wave of misinformation and public lamentation being spread by certain opposition political leaders in response to the incarceration of some of their Members of Parliament and party officials. Let us be unequivocal—this is not a matter of political persecution, but a matter of law enforcement and justice.

We urge the opposition to stop appealing to public emotion and instead seek justice through the proper legal channels. The courtroom is where innocence is proven, not the streets, and certainly not through media campaigns aimed at stirring public sympathy. The attempt to rebrand individuals facing serious legal charges as political martyrs is both dishonest and a disservice to the Zambian people.

We must ask: among those facing legal action, who has been arrested or prosecuted without having committed an offence? The opposition has yet to provide a single credible example. They continue to cry foul without addressing the actual charges involved.

Consider former Kawambwa Central MP Nixon Chilangwa and Pambashe MP Ronald Chitotela. These individuals have serious charges tied to them to which they are serving sentences in prison resulting from their conduct at the time in government—such as the burning of a vehicle, believed to have targeted opposition voices. That matter was reported while they were in power, but deliberately ignored.

The case of former Petauke Central MP Emmanuel “JJ” Banda is also telling. JJ Banda was under lawful police custody, pretending to be ill and deliberately escaped. This is not a political issue; it is a criminal act and offense to escape from lawful custody. He is now a fugitive from justice.

The same applies to Mfuwe MP Maureen Mabonga, who is also facing the law after committing an offence. Yet, instead of dealing with the legal substance of the cases, the opposition seeks to paint a picture of persecution—ignoring the facts and hoping to generate sympathy rather than accountability.

We must emphasize: breaking the law is not excused by holding a political position. Members of Parliament are not above the law. They are sworn to uphold the Constitution, and that very Constitution binds every Zambian equally—whether an MP or an ordinary citizen. Those who break the law must answer to it, regardless of their title, tribe or political party affiliation.

There are countless ordinary Zambians serving sentences for offences they committed. Should we create a separate standard of justice for politicians? Certainly not. That would be the true betrayal of democracy.

To our colleagues in the opposition: it is time to abandon the politics of self-pity. The path to justice lies in the courts, not in playing the victim. Zambia is governed by the rule of law, and we will not bend that principle to accommodate political expediency.

Let every citizen, regardless of status, be held to the same standard. Let the opposition stop crying for sympathy and start engaging with the justice system in good faith. No one is above the law.

WHERE ARE THE K100, K50 NEW NOTES, KALABA DEMANDS ANSWERS FROM BOZ

WHERE ARE THE K100, K50 NEW NOTES, KALABA DEMANDS ANSWERS FROM BOZ

• Citizens First President Harry Kalaba challenges Government to update the nation on the status of the K100 and K50 notes

Lusaka – 18 May, 2025 – Citizens First (CF) wishes to challenge the Government through the Central Bank to update the nation on the status of the K100 and K50 notes which still remains undelivered three months after unveiling the new currency.

The nation will recall that on February, 11, 2025, Bank of Zambia Governor, Dr. Denny Kalyalya, announced the launch of new bank notes comprising K500, K200, K100, K50, K20, and K10.

However, to date, the Central Bank has failed to deliver the other two bank notes, raising questions about why the process to unveil the new notes was rushed when the authorities were fully aware that the other two notes would take long to be made available.

As Citizens First, we are particularly concerned with the information reaching us that the two notes in question, K100 and K50 may not be available until sometime in September of this year.

We therefore challenge the Central Bank to indicate the reasons for this unnecessary delay. In the same vein, the Bank of Zambia should also give definite timelines when the nation should expect the K100 and K50 notes to be in circulation.

Harry Kalaba

CYBERSECURITY LAWS NOT YET IN FORCE DESPITE PRESIDENTIAL ASSENT – DR KAABA

CYBERSECURITY LAWS NOT YET IN FORCE DESPITE PRESIDENTIAL ASSENT – DR KAABA

A Senior Research Fellow at the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research (SAIPAR) and a Senior Law Lecturer at the University of Zambia (UNZA), Dr. O’Brien Kaaba has clarified that the recently assented cybersecurity laws in Zambia are not yet in force, contrary to claims circulating on social media.

Dr. Kaaba said that while the laws received Presidential Assent in April 2025, they require a formal Commencement Order before taking effect.

He explained that the Cybersecurity Act requires a Commencement Order issued by the President, while another cybersecurity-related law requires a commencement order from the relevant Minister.

The Legal Expert said as of now, no Order has been signed, meaning the laws remain inactive.

He further noted that recent arrests related to cyber offenses in Zambia have been based on the 2021 Act, which remains in effect until the laws officially come into effect

The Legal Expert said this in a Policy Brief dubbed The Cyber Crimes and the Cyber Security Acts: The Good and the Bad presented during a Roundtable Discussion at the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research (SAIPAR) Muna Ndulo Campus in Lusaka.

President Hakainde Hichilema assented to the Cyber Security Act No. 3 of 2025 and the Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025 on 8th April 2025, with the laws set to come into force upon the issuance of the commencement orders.

The new legislation is intended to repeal and replace the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act No. 2 of 2021.

Dr Kaaba highlighted the justification for cyber regulation, citing the exponential growth of computer technology and the increased penetration of the internet, which have drastically transformed human interactions and opportunities.

He noted that many government services, commerce, and routine communication now rely heavily on cyberspace, but this digital landscape also presents significant risks, with criminals exploiting online platforms to advance their own goals.

Dr Kaaba pointed out that while social media has allowed people to express themselves in ways conventional outlets could not, it has also become a space where offline harm is replicated.

He stressed that regulation is necessary to mitigate such risks while ensuring the enjoyment of human rights online, necessitating the criminalisation of certain harmful cyber activities.

He referenced Article 25(1) of the African Union Convention on Cyber Security and Personal Data Protection 2014, which calls for states to adopt legislative measures that criminalise acts affecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of digital systems and data.

He emphasised the importance of balancing state intervention with the protection of human rights, as outlined in Article 25(3) of the Convention.

The Cyber Crimes Act criminalises various forms of misconduct in cyberspace, including unauthorised access to computer systems, data interference, cyber fraud, child pornography, online human trafficking, and cyber terrorism.

Dr Kaaba noted that these provisions align with international standards, such as the Council of Europe’s Convention on Cybercrime (Budapest 2001) and the African Union Convention on Cyber Security and Personal Data Protection 2014, which similarly prohibit a range of cyber offences.

Addressing concerns about surveillance, he highlighted provisions in the Cyber Security Act that require electronic communication service providers to equip their systems with monitoring capabilities, facilitate real-time interception of communication, and store call-related data.

While recognising surveillance as a necessary tool for national security and crime prevention, Dr Kaaba cautioned that it must be proportionate and precisely targeted to avoid infringing on human rights.

He cited a 2023 resolution by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which encourages the use of privacy-enhancing technologies and discourages measures that weaken encryption or promote mass surveillance unless such actions are justified under international human rights law.

Dr Kaaba reiterated the importance of finding the right balance between effective cyber regulation and safeguarding individual freedoms, urging policymakers to ensure that security measures do not override citizens’ fundamental rights.

Zesco Board Chairperson Vickson Ncube says the power utility company is beginning to see positive outcomes from the emergency electricity tariff adjustment, noting an improvement in cash flow.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Ncube has acknowledged that the initial impact of the tariff hike was minimal due to the constrained availability of power in the country.

He however explains that as power supply gradually stabilises, the benefits of the emergency tariffs are expected to become more evident, and ultimately generate much-needed revenue for the utility

Mr. Ncube has also highlighted the importance of implementing cost-reflective tariffs in Zambia, stressing that such a move is crucial to attracting meaningful investment in the energy sector.

He has further stated that achieving cost-reflective tariffs should be a priority and must happen sooner to ensure the sustainability of the sector.

GOV’T HAS NOT DOWNPLAYED DRUG THEFT SCANDAL – MILUPI

By Angela Muchinshi,

18th April 2025

UPND Alliance chairperson Charles Milupi says the revelations recently made by the US Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales are not corruption but pure theft.

Last week, Gonzales announced that the US government would cut K1.4 billion worth of aid to Zambia’s health sector because government had failed to act on the theft of American donated medicines, which found themselves in private pharmacies, instead of benefitting citizens for free.

On Monday, former president Edgar Lungu said it was an insult to over 19 million citizens who entrusted the UPND government with power, for them to shamelessly downplay the serious revelations made by US Gonzales.

He said despite President Hakainde Hichilema’s promise to fight corruption, it had worsened under his watch, urging…

UPND GOVT BREAKS FREE FROM IMPORTED DRUG DEPENDENCE

May 18,2025

Zambia has sealed a historic partnership to start producing its own essential medicines locally, marking a groundbreaking move poised to revolutionize healthcare in the country.

The partnership follows a landmark agreement between the Zambian government and Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited, one of India’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Akums has chosen Zambia as the first country outside India to host its state-of-the-art drug manufacturing plant, a joint venture that marks a significant step towards self-sufficiency.

This strategic partnership will drastically reduce Zambia’s dependency on imported medicines, cut costs, address frequent shortages, and ensure rural communities have better access to life-saving drugs.

The plant will manufacture about 150 essential medicines and medical supplies locally, resulting from high-level meetings held in New Delhi between Zambia’s Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, Siazongo Siakalenge, and Akums founder Sandeep Jain.

Deputy Secretary Siakalenge expressed optimism about the project’s impact, stating that close to 150 different products will be produced in Zambia, making the country almost self-sufficient in the acquisition of such drugs and medicines.

This transformative step aligns with the United Party for National Development (UPND) government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the healthcare system under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership.

President Hichilema has consistently prioritized healthcare, championing initiatives that aim to make healthcare accessible and affordable for all Zambians.

The funds for the project have already been secured, and construction of the factory is set to commence in September this year.

Once operational, the facility will alleviate the burden of imported medicines, foster local production, and contribute significantly to the national healthcare agenda.

This development symbolizes not just progress but a resilient vision for a healthier Zambia, driven by the UPND government’s commitment to putting healthcare first.

Zimbabwe Tops World Beer Drinking Countries List

Zimbabweans consumed a staggering 2.66 million hectolitres of lager beer in 2024, marking a notable increase from previous years, according to newly released figures from Delta Corporation, the country’s leading beverage manufacturer.

The record-breaking consumption underscores a growing national appetite for lager, especially among younger, urban drinkers. Delta attributes the surge in demand to its expanded production capacity and the establishment of more efficient distribution networks, which have allowed the company to maintain a consistent beer supply across all provinces.

Among the wide array of lager brands produced by Delta, Carling Black Label led the charge, selling over one million hectolitres and securing its position as the most popular lager in the country. The brand’s dominant performance highlights shifting consumer preferences and deepening brand loyalty in a competitive market.

Industry experts say the rise in beer consumption mirrors broader socio-economic changes in Zimbabwe. These include marginal improvements in disposable incomes within certain urban segments and a cultural shift toward social drinking as a lifestyle trend.

“We are seeing a lifestyle change, especially in urban areas, where lager is becoming the beverage of choice,” noted one market analyst. “It’s no longer just about the drink – it’s part of the social identity for many young adults.”

In response to this growing demand, Delta Corporation has pledged continued investment in brewing infrastructure and product development. The company has also hinted at plans to diversify its product offerings to retain market dominance and respond to evolving consumer tastes.

With beer consumption on the rise and competition intensifying, Delta’s proactive approach suggests the country’s beverage industry is poised for further growth in the coming years.

Omotoso banned from South Africa for five years after deportation

Omotoso banned from South Africa for five years after deportation

Nigerian Televangelist Timothy Omotoso has been banned from re-entering South Africa for five years following his deportation today, Sunday.

The Department of Home Affairs confirmed that Omotoso was declared a “prohibited person” under the Immigration Act, citing his unlawful presence in the country after his acquittal on multiple criminal charges.

Omotoso, leader of Jesus Dominion International Church, was acquitted on April 2, 2025, by the Gqeberha High Court of 32 charges, including rape, human trafficking, and racketeering. The court cited prosecutorial mishandling and insufficient evidence as reasons for the acquittal.

Despite the acquittal, the Department of Home Affairs maintained that Omotoso’s continued stay in South Africa was unlawful. He was arrested on May 10 in East London after the Minister of Home Affairs rejected his application to overturn the prohibited person status.

Omotoso was released from custody on May 12 pending a High Court review of his prohibited status. However, he opted for voluntary deportation and departed South Africa today, May 18 via OR Tambo International Airport, escorted by immigration and police officials.

Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza stated that Omotoso is barred from re-entering South Africa for five years and must apply for reconsideration after this period.

Danity Kane Dawn Richard testifies she witnessed Diddy be@t Cassie

Singer Dawn Richard testified on Friday, May 16, in a federal courtroom that she personally witnessed Sean “Diddy” Combs ass@ult Cassie, and said the music mogul regularly engaged in violent behavior.

Richard, a former member of Danity Kane, was called to the stand in Diddy’s ongoing criminal trial, where prosecutors questioned her about a specific incident in 2009 involving the Bad Boy Records founder and singer Cassie Ventura.

According to Richard’s testimony, the ass@ult took place inside Diddy’s Los Angeles home. She told the jury she saw Diddy attack Cassie, k!cking her and attempting to strike her with a skillet filled with eggs. Richard said Cassie fell to the ground and curled into a fetal position while Diddy continued to kick her in the head and body, then dragged her across the room.

Richard described hearing glass shattering and yelling, adding that she was frightened for both Cassie and herself.

She also testified that after the incident, Diddy threatened her and another bandmate, warning them not to speak about what they had witnessed. “He said it was in our best interest not to talk,” Richard told the court. “He said, ‘Where I come from, people go missing if they talk.’”

Her testimony echoed claims Cassie made on the witness stand earlier in the trial, in which she described repeated abuse by Combs. It also aligns with allegations Richard made in a civil lawsuit filed in November 2024 against Diddy.

The judge dismissed the jury and Richard for the weekend. Her testimony is scheduled to continue Monday morning.

82-year-old entertainment mogul David Geffen files for divorce from his 32-year-old husband

Entertainment mogul David Geffen has filed for divorce, seeking to end his marriage to David Armstrong also known as Donovan Michaels, just one month short of their two-year anniversary.

Geffen, 82, submitted the petition with the assistance of high-profile divorce attorney Laura Wasser, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. The couple, who married nearly two years ago, did not have a prenuptial agreement in place.

Armstrong, 32, is a former go-go dancer who used the stage name Donovan Michaels. The pair’s relationship had raised eyebrows due to their 50-year age gap, and news of their divorce has come as a surprise to many.

Despite Geffen’s substantial fortune, estimated by Forbes at $8.7 billion, legal experts suggest Armstrong may not walk away with a significant settlement. Geffen, who retired over 15 years ago, reportedly has no earned income and relies on investments such as stocks and equities. Under California law, dividends and gains from separate property remain separate in divorce proceedings, meaning Armstrong may have limited access to Geffen’s wealth.

While Armstrong is entitled to spousal support, the duration will be brief. In California, support is typically granted for half the length of the marriage, which in this case would be approximately one year. The exact amount was not disclosed in the divorce documents.

Geffen has agreed to cover Armstrong’s attorney’s fees and will provide spousal support, according to the filing. Known for his philanthropy, Geffen has donated extensively to education, the arts, and healthcare over the years.

UN humanitarian chief dismisses US alternative aid plan for Gaza

The United Nations has a working aid plan and supplies ready to go, said its humanitarian chief on Friday, dismissing alternative proposals from the U.S. and Israel.

Tom Fletcher, the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, urged on X for rapid, safe, and unimpeded access to starving civilians in Gaza, calling for parties to stop wasting time on alternative aid distribution models.

The UN has voiced firm opposition to the plan, citing concerns over its impartiality, neutrality, and independence.

“We have the people. We have the distribution networks. We have the trust of the communities on the ground. And we have the aid itself -160,000 pallets of it- ready to move. Now,” Fletcher said on X.

Commenting on the proposed alternative model, he said, “let’s not waste time”, emphasizing that the UN has an established and reliable plan already in place.

Israel halted the entry of goods and supplies into Gaza on March 2, following the expiration of the first phase of a January ceasefire agreement with Hamas. It resumed attacks on Gaza on March 18, which have so far killed 3,131 Palestinians.

According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), all 2.1 million Palestinians in Gaza are at risk of famine, with one in five facing starvation.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee recently announced an alternative aid plan designed to serve around 1.2 million people — about 60 percent of Gaza’s population — through four distribution centers inside the enclave.

The operation would be managed by a newly established private entity, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, and secured by U.S. contractors, with the Israeli military guarding the perimeter.

M23 rebels expel civilians to Rwanda

Thousands of people believed to be illegals from Rwanda were expelled by the M23 from the key major town of Goma on Saturday.

On Monday, the M23 spokesperson, Willy Ngoma, presented 181 individuals claiming they were Rwandan subjects who were illegally in Goma.

Also presented were thousands of women and children believed to be family members of the culprits. According to witnesses, they were carried in trucks and their documents, issued by the Congolese authorities, were burned to ashes. The group claimed that the documents were bogus.

The majority of the families are from the Karenga region, located in North Kivu, which had been under the control of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).

Both Kigalia and M23 accuse the Congo government of supporting the FDLR, which has also committed numerous atrocities in the region.

According to some sources, most families lived in a displacement camp in Sake, a few kilometers from Goma.

Some 360 people were repatriated on Saturday into Rwanda, according to Eujin Byun, a spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees [UNHCR].

For decades, mineral-rich eastern Congo has been ripped apart by violence from government forces and different armed groups, including the Rwanda-backed M23, whose recent resurgence has escalated the conflict and worsened an already acute humanitarian crisis.

The rebels are supported by about 4,000 troops from neighboring Rwanda, according to U.N. experts.

And Mundubile says Lungu is not vengeful, saying he can quickly help President Hichilema if he apologised and asked for assistance so that he can do something that will add to his legacy.

Meanwhile, Lukashya PF MP George Chisanga says the jailing of Mfuwe MP Maureen Mabonga and her Lumezi counterpart, Munir Zulu, was conveniently timed when the UPND tabled constitutional amendments.

Addressing the media, Saturday, Mundubile said by now President Hichilema was wondering how Lungu and the PF managed to do what they did, saying it was a bit late to admit that leadership was hard.

“I’m sure in the President’s eyes now he looks at president Lungu as a hero. Lungu is like a mentor to President Hakainde Hichilema because he is now saying leadership is not easy after recording so many failures. There’s been failures in the agricultural sector, failures in the health sector, failures in the economy, in the mining sector. So you can imagine coming to admit that leadership is not easy when there’s been no appreciable progress made in the sectors I have just stated. But if you go back he’s now looking at president Lungu and wondering how he managed to do for instance the 400km township roads on the Copperbelt,” Mundubile said.

“He’s wondering how ECL managed to do the L-400, where all these township roads were done. He’s now wondering how ECL managed to do the decongestion programme. He’s also surprised that ECL was able to construct three big airports, in Ndola, Lusaka and Livingstone. He’s actually amazed that ECL was able to do the Kazungula bridge, Kafue gorge lower, Kafulafuta dam. So he’s saying how on earth did ECL and the PF do all these things. But to come and admit a few months before the elections, it’s a bit too late”.

And Mundubile said Lungu was not vengeful as he would quickly help President Hichilema if he apologised and asked for assistance so that he could do something that would add to his legacy.

“I sympathise with the UPND, they should not think words alone can pacify the situation. Words alone will not bring down the cost of living. President Hakainde Hichilema has a few months to rectify the situation before they leave government because obviously as head of state he needs to leave a legacy, he need to be remembered for something, four years down the line, there’s absolutely nothing to remember the President for. The only thing the Zambians will remember HH for is high cost of living. So he’s got a couple of months now to quickly adjust and do something for the Zambian people,” he said .

“President Lungu is not vengeful, I know that if President Hichilema picked a phone and apologised to his brother and asked him what he can do in the remaining months just to try and save his face, at least do something that will add to his legacy, president Lungu will be very quick to assist his brother so that he does not walk away from presidency with a bad record”.

He also alleged that the Electoral Commission of Zambia was making excuses to conduct voter registration in areas that were not UPND strongholds.

“MPs have found in the constituencies that are in the none-UPND strongholds ECZ is apologising at every juncture. It’s either something is not working, cameras are not working. There’s been one complaint too many especially from the PF strongholds, MPs under Tonse have brought reports that ECZ is being very deliberate, they don’t want to register voters in non-UPND strongholds. So we are here, MPs for Tonse to sound a warning to ECZ that ensure that you do a diligent job. The same equipment you’re sending to other provinces where you think other parties are stronger should be the same equipment you send to areas where [our] MPs are coming from,” said Mundubile.

“Why is it that these equipment are only breaking down in certain areas? ECZ, as MPs we want to speak without fear, we want to send this warning to ECZ. You want to rig the elections right in the face of the Zambian people? You must do an honest job, you must act above board. MPs are complaining, it can’t be a coincidence. You’ve been to other parts of the country for the past three years, you’ve only gone to some of our constituencies now and you’re rushing through this particular process. That’s not acceptable”.

Meanwhile, Lukashya PF MP George Chisanga said the jailing of Mabonga and Zulu were conveniently timed when the UPND had tabled constitutional amendments.

He said the absence of the two parliamentarians was deliberately intended to tilt debate of the amendments in favour of the UPND as they would have more numbers.

“We express our anger and disappointment because yesterday was another dark day in the constitutional democracy of this country. The nation is aware that the Mrs Mabonga and Mr Munir Zulu’s jailing were conveniently timed at the time when the UPND had tabled constitutional amendments on the floor of the house. As we return to parliament we will consider the controversial constitutional amendments that have been proposed by the UPND government. The absence of these two members is deliberately intended to skew the debate in favour of the UPND because indeed in their absence the numbers of those who are opposed to the constitutional amendments in the house begins to reduce. We cannot divorce what transpired yesterday and what transpired in the case of Munir Zulu to the fact that this is a timed arrangement to make sure that we reduce our capacity in providing opposition to the constitution amendments,” Chisanga said.

“Mrs Mabonga joins the queue of other PF leaders who have been victims of injustice and victims of selective application of the law since the UPND took over power in 2021. It’s a clear fact that honourable Mabonga was merely responding to provocative statements that have become an order of the day by the UPND officials and cadres which are targeted at the PF.

There’s a long queue of senior leaders and cadres of the UPND who have committed serious crimes and complaints have been filed but nothing has happened to them, they have not been arrested, no prosecution up to date. The case of Jay Jay still remains an ugly example of the misapplication of the law”.

He said at the rate the country was moving, all MPs in the opposition who would exercise their freedoms of speech and expression would be jailed.

“At the rate the country is moving, many if not all MPs in the opposition and other leaders who choose to exercise their freedoms guaranteed for citizens by the constitution especially the freedom of expression, assembly and speech will end up being jailed by this authoritative regime. The ugly face of police conduct yesterday within the premises of the court when the opposition leaders wanted to state their views on Mabonga’s verdict is a clear testimony of what this government has resolved to do in its treatment of the opposition,” said Chisanga.

“We call upon all the members of the Tonse alliance, the Zambia we want, and by extension the United Kwacha Alliance or at least the remnants of what has remained in it to unite around an ideology and a philosophy that’s going to turn the tables in this nation and restore it to its past years of glory. What we are going through is nothing else but gangsterism. We have replaced the constitution, rule of law by the rule of giants or the rule of savages. You cannot expect any better when you have a country where if your allegiance is to the UPND you can commit any manner of offence and nothing is going to come as consequences”.

And PF deputy secretary general Brenda Nyirenda said by now Zambians were feeling sorry for having voted out the PF, who had a heart for the people.

“Zambia needed to change leadership so that the people can taste the other type of leadership before they can make the right decision. When you have a good leader in power it’s very easy for you to abuse him, to throw a lot of mud at him. I think today every Zambian in their home when they sit and ask themselves questions as to what they did to the PF, I’m sure every home is now saying we are sorry that we removed PF, people who had a heart, people who loved the country to the core,” said Nyirenda.

“It’s only 11 months before parliament is dissolved, by May we will have been dissolved, there will be no MP, no president, we’ll be getting into an election. And today parliamentarians are being arrested and being sent to jail, this means that in the next 11 months we still have to spend colossal sums of money to replace those MPs, who does that? Who makes such a decision? In a home you know that there’s no food for the children and you start spending money on a Mercedes Benz, where is the heart of a leader”.

Power Trading, Open Access and Energy Sector Diversification in Zambia

Dr Lubinda Haabazoka writes:

Kindly enjoy as my piece is coming later.

Power Trading, Open Access and Energy Sector Diversification in Zambia

Zambia is currently facing one of the most critical energy crises since independence, driven by climate-induced droughts and an overdependence on hydropower. These challenges have exposed structural weaknesses in the electricity supply system. In response, the country has initiated bold reforms, including market liberalization, increased private sector participation, and energy diversification. Central to this transformation are regulated open access and the promotion of power trading as both a long-term strategy and a short-term solution.

The energy sector is highly capital-intensive, and before funding projects, investors conduct rigorous due diligence—assessing sovereign risks and vetting Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and traders. Negative public discourse or political interference can jeopardize funding by damaging the reputation of companies engaged in critical negotiations. Reckless statements—particularly from political actors—not only harm individual firms but also undermine the broader goal of universal energy access.

This week a power trader Greenco helped zesco , without them the transaction wouldn’t have happened . With their help in the renewables $70m was raised to set up a 100 MW solar power plant in Zambia. Imagine if a week before this, bad news concerning this company happened? There was going to be no funding.

As EAZ President, I helped lobby to have open access so that anyone with power could use existing infrastructure to sell power either within Zambia or Abroad. This exists in many countries and is an exciting market that creates a new industry like you never imagined. The end winners are the consumers!

As someone often engaged by international stakeholders for investment insights, I am increasingly frustrated by the frequency of avoidable concerns raised from abroad. It is imperative that we, as a nation, exercise caution and foster a cooperative environment that builds investor confidence and supports national development.

Understanding Power Trading

Power trading refers to the buying and selling of electricity between producers, suppliers, and consumers—domestically or across borders. It facilitates optimal use of available resources, helps stabilize national grids, and creates a competitive market that encourages investment and innovation. Private power trading, a subset of this market, allows non-governmental entities such as Independent Power Producers (IPPs), power traders, and private utilities to directly participate in electricity commerce.

Types of Private Power Trading

  1. Bilateral Power Sales – Direct Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with large consumers (e.g., mines).
  2. Wheeling and Open Access – Transmission of power via public infrastructure to third-party customers.
  3. Retail Power Supply – Direct sales to end-users in deregulated environments.
  4. Cross-border Private Trade – Export/import of electricity across countries under regional frameworks.

Zambia’s Energy Reform Trajectory

 Historical Context: From Monopoly to Mixed Market

  • 1994: National Energy Policy introduced, initiating energy sector liberalization.
  • 1995: Enactment of the Energy Regulation Act and the Electricity Act.
  • 1997: Establishment of the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to regulate the sector.
  • These reforms broke ZESCO’s monopoly and allowed private sector participation.
  • Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) began serving major clients like mines.

 Legal and Regulatory Milestones

  • Electricity Act No. 11 and Energy Regulation Act No. 12 enacted in 2019:
o Enabled open access to the national grid.
o Allowed multiple players to be licensed for generation, transmission, and distribution.
  • Electricity (Open Access) Regulations of 2024:
    o Operationalized open access.
o Permitted large consumers to purchase power directly from IPPs and power traders.

 Strategic Role of Power Trading in the Energy Crisis

  • In 2024, structured imports and private procurement:
    o Helped reduce load-shedding.
o Relieved pressure on ZESCO’s limited capacity.
o Ensured stable supply to priority sectors (e.g., schools, hospitals, households).
  • Power trading is now a core component of Zambia’s energy security.

 Balancing Liberalization with Public Utility Health

  • Open access reforms must not weaken ZESCO, which remains central to the national grid.
  • Critical measures to maintain balance:
o Regulated wheeling charges to protect infrastructure usage.
o Structured import coordination to ensure national demand is met efficiently.
o Equitable supply allocation between public and private actors to avoid market distortion.

Energy Diversification: A National Imperative

Overdependence on hydropower has proven to be Zambia’s Achilles heel. Diversifying the energy mix to include solar, wind, thermal, and regional imports is not just aspirational—it’s a necessity. Power trading enables this diversification by introducing new players and supply channels into the national grid.

IMF Staff Completes Mission to Zambia

May 16, 2025

●Yet, spending pressures are emerging in 2025 due to rising debt service and social spending needs.

●a slow recovery in electricity generation and electricity shortages could undermine the rebound, underscoring the need for sustained reforms in the energy sector.

●new spending needs.

●Structural reforms in the energy sector, governance, public procurement, and the business environment should be accelerated to unlock Zambia’s growth potential and support job creation.

The IMF team had productive discussions with the Zambian authorities on economic performance and policies underpinning the Fifth Review under the IMF Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement.

Zambia’s recovery is gaining pace, with growth set to strengthen in 2025. Sustaining progress in a volatile environment requires stronger buffers and accelerated structural reform implementation.

Discussions will continue towards reaching a staff-level agreement on the review, including to address new spending needs and allow Zambia to respond to emerging challenges while restoring debt sustainability.

Fund (IMF) mission team led by Ms. Vera Martin visited Lusaka from April 29 to May 13, and held productive discussions with the Zambian authorities on economic and financial policies that could underpin the completion of the Fifth Review under the ECF arrangement.

The visit also entailed discussions under the 2025 Article IV Consultation.

At the end of the mission, Ms. Vera Martin issued the following statement:

“The Zambian authorities and IMF staff have advanced the technical work and policy discussions as part of the Fifth Review under the Extended Credit Facility. Discussions will continue in the coming weeks to finalize the policies and reforms underpinning this review.

“Zambia’s economy has shown encouraging resilience despite economic shocks. Growth is expected to strengthen in 2025, supported by an anticipated rebound in agriculture and a pickup in mining activity.

However, a slow recovery in electricity generation and electricity shortages could undermine the rebound, underscoring the need for sustained reforms in the energy sector.

“The fiscal primary balance in 2024, estimated at 2.9 percent of GDP, outperformed expectations, marked by constrained financing and spending compression. Yet, spending pressures are emerging in 2025 due to rising debt service and social spending needs. Mobilizing domestic revenues, in the context of constrained financing conditions, remains critical to preserving fiscal and debt sustainability and safeguarding priority social and infrastructure spending.

“The authorities remain committed to improving public financial management and fiscal transparency, while enhancing tax administration. Reforms to reduce tax expenditures, to make the tax regime more progressive, and improve expenditure controls are essential to build additional fiscal resilience.

“Inflation is projected to gradually decline over the course of the year, reflecting expected easing in food and fuel prices. The Bank of Zambia should continue to maintain a data-driven and forward-looking monetary policy stance to bring inflation on a downward trend towards the inflation band while supporting macroeconomic stability.

“Given extremely high levels of global policy uncertainty, the external environment remains challenging, with downside risks to the growth outlook arising from subdued global demand, elevated commodity price volatility, and declining official development support. Continuing the reform momentum is essential to build resilience, create fiscal space, and crowd in private investment. Structural reforms in the energy sector, governance, public procurement, and the business environment should be accelerated to unlock Zambia’s growth potential and support job creation.

“During the visit, the IMF team met with His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema; Minister of Finance and National Planning, Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane; Governor of the Bank of Zambia, Dr. Denny Kalyalya; Secretary to the Treasury, Felix Nkulukusa; Deputy Governor, Dr. Francis Chipimo; senior government officials; representatives of the private sector, civil society organizations, and development partners.”

ZAMBIANS REJOICE OVER MFUWE MP MAUREEN MABONGA’S CONVICTION

ZAMBIANS REJOICE OVER MFUWE MP MAUREEN MABONGA’S CONVICTION

By Kalemba

Mabonga’s jailing sparks celebratory comments on Zambian social media space

The internet was yesterday awash with thousands of comments welcoming the jailing of Mfuwe PF member of parliament Maureen Mabonga who was condemned to eight months in prison for “tribal” talk.

Almost year ago, while being cheered on by her opposition counterparts, Mabonga suggested that Bembas and Easterners would triumph in a tribal war against UPND because a combination of two would outnumber law enforcement agents.

Mabonga was eventually arrested charged with seditious practices and after months of trial, she was convicted and sentenced to eight months simple imprisonment.

The presiding magistrate also fined the lawmaker K1,600 or spend an extra three months in jail.

As the news of Mabonga’s jailing spread across several online news platforms, sympathy for her was in short supply.

“She deserves it after those reckless remarks,” Sinkala Derrick commented on Emmanuel Mwamba’s page after he announced the verdict.

Malama Edwards, another follower of Emmanuel Mwamba wrote; “This should be life lessons to all political players that no one is above the law”.

Similar comments dominanted discussion around Mabonga’s jailing across several nes platforms.

“For me if a law maker is convicted I have no sympathy. I only Feel for innocent citizens who don’t enjoy any immunity. Those MP’s know that they are protected in parliament but they choose to speak in public,” Peter Schilima commented on Mwebantu.

Another user on Mwebantu, Victor Kawana Kawana wrote; “Cleaning up is not easy. All we want is sanity and responsibility. If this insanity is not tamed, our children will inherit huge problems.

Careless talk, can bring anarchy in the country which will be very difficult to nub.

Politicians across the divide have the responsibility to differentiate between careless talk and mature substantiated politics”.

But opposition figures condemned the jailing branding saying it was a sign of the shrinking democratic space in the country.

Nkana member of parliament Binwell Mpundu and his Matero counterpart took to social media to voice out.

Inside the court as the judgment was being delivered, several opposition figures including Socialist Party President Fred M’membe, Brian Mundubile and Stephen Kampyongo were present to offer solidarity.

In his judgment, Lusaka Senior Resident Magistrate, Trevor Kasanda advised Members of Parliament to exercise caution and responsibility in their public statement to avoid fostering hostility, inciting violence and disrupting peace in Zambia.

Magistrate Kasanda said the words of elected officials carry immense weight and have the power to shape public sentiment, influence governance and contribute to either unity or division.

The magistrate said after he found guilty in one count of seditious practices and sentenced her to eight months simple imprisonment.

Magistrate Kasanda also fined the law maker K1,600 in default to three months imprisonment if she fails to pay.

In this case, Mabonga on a date unknown but between May 25 and 28, 2024 in Lusaka uttered seditious words to which she said: “Do you want us to be moving with guns? Start killing each other? Is this where we are going? Is this what we want as Zambians? Because we can do it.

“Today it is Jay Jay that has been abducted. Tomorrow it is another person and you want us to sit back and relax… After all, you got power. We don’t understand why people are still bitter. Country men and women we are going to fight if it is the fight they want we are going to fight and we are ready to fight,” among other words to incite violence or any offence prejudicial to public order or in disturbance of the public peace.

Magistrate Kasanda said the words uttered by Mabonga are likely to cause violence and division in the country.

He said Zambia is a nation with 72 diverse tribes, spread across Zambia’s ten provinces, each contributing to the country’s rich cultural heritage and diversity and all tribes are equal.

“Zambia upholds the principle that all tribes are equal, regardless of population size. No tribe should be regarded as superior to another. Zambia has maintained a strong sense of national unity under the motto “One Zambia, one nation.”

“Let’s all be reminded that the Rwandan genocide stands as one of the darkest chapters in human history, unfolding between April and July 1994. Statements by leaders and policies exacerbated entrenched divisions and fostered animosity between the Tutsi and Hutu communities,” Magistrate Kasanda said.

He found Mabonga guilty and convicted her accordingly

In her mitigation, through his lawyers, Leon Lemba and Norman Siwila, she begged the court for leniency on basis that she was a first offender who can only be fined.

She also showed remorse and pledges to abide by the guidance of the court.

However, Kasanda said Mabonga incited men, women and cadres to rise and cause violence in the country which is against the law.

“I have heard what Counsel has said in mitigation, and I have considered that the convict is a first offender, I will exercise leniency but inorder to deter the would offenders I have to pass a sentence, the words that she uttered carries weight as a law maker, and such words should not be said by the leaders. I will fine you 4,000 penalty units in default to three months imprisonment and further sentence you to eight months simple imprisonment,” Magistrate Kasanda ruled

Zambia’s Energy Future Hinges on Power Trading and Open Access – Dr. Lubinda Haabazoka

Zambia’s Energy Future Hinges on Power Trading and Open Access – Dr. Lubinda Haabazoka

Amid one of the most crippling energy crises in Zambia’s post-independence history, prominent economist and energy policy strategist Dr. Lubinda Haabazoka is urging for a national business consensus to accelerate reforms in the energy sector. His focus: unlocking power trading and open grid access as cornerstones for investment, innovation, and long-term sustainability.

A former president of the Economics Association of Zambia (EAZ), Dr. Haabazoka is positioning the country’s energy landscape as a high-potential investment corridor. He argues that liberalized power systems can create a robust business ecosystem, one capable of attracting global capital, building local entrepreneurship, and boosting regional trade.

“Zambia’s energy future lies in expanding and refining ongoing reforms. Deepening support for power trading, open access, and diversification are not just strategies they are business imperatives that determine our development trajectory,” Dr. Haabazoka stated in a policy brief shared this week.

The country’s energy insecurity caused by climate-induced droughts and an overdependence on hydropower has severely impacted industrial productivity, disrupted small businesses, and heightened investor risk perception. However, this crisis is now catalyzing bold legal and policy reforms, opening the sector for private sector participation and competition.

One of the landmark reforms is the Electricity (Open Access) Regulations of 2024, which permits large consumers to procure power directly from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and licensed power traders. This reform redefines the business model of electricity in Zambia from a state-controlled utility monopoly to a diversified, investor-driven marketplace.

Dr. Haabazoka, who was instrumental in lobbying for open access during his tenure at EAZ, sees this shift as a foundational pillar for new capital flows. “Allowing producers to trade electricity using national infrastructure opens up an entirely new market. It decentralizes control, stimulates innovation, and ensures price competitiveness all of which benefit the consumer and business community,” he noted.

Evidence of investor confidence is already emerging. Just this week, a private developer secured $70 million in financing to build a 100 MW solar power plant in Zambia. This deal highlights the scalability and viability of energy ventures under the new regulatory regime.

“Now imagine if a week before this deal, political noise or negative press about Zambia’s energy landscape surfaced? That funding would have vanished. Reputation is currency in the global capital market we must protect it at all costs,” warned Dr. Haabazoka, emphasizing the impact of political risk on investor sentiment.

A growing roster of energy firms africa GreenCo, CEC Plc, EnPower, Lunsemfwa Hydro, and Maamba Collieries are now actively engaged in bilateral energy sales, regional exports, and diversified supply models. Their presence signals that Zambia is fast becoming a regional energy hub with scalable export potential.

However, Dr. Haabazoka cautions that liberalization must be carefully managed to avoid destabilizing state assets. “ZESCO remains a national asset. We must adopt a hybrid approach that safeguards public infrastructure while enabling a competitive market. That’s the formula for resilience and sustainable business growth,” he explained.

He called on Zambian entrepreneurs to recognize energy not only as a consumption cost but as a strategic investment opportunity. “From rural solar mini-grids to cross-border power trading platforms Zambians must take the lead. We cannot outsource this revolution. It must be Zambian-owned, Zambian-built, and Zambian-driven,” he said.

Dr. Haabazoka also addressed the importance of political discipline, particularly in managing public statements around energy deals. “Every reckless utterance adds sovereign risk. The energy sector is no longer just about electricity it’s about GDP growth, job creation, and national competitiveness,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Dr. Haabazoka teased plans to explore nuclear energy as a future export commodity. He believes Zambia has the potential to monetize atomic power not just for local use but for regional trading, positioning the country as an energy exporter and forex earner.

“Let’s power Zambia’s future together. Let’s create a billion-dollar energy economy driven by innovation, investment, and inclusion,” he concluded.

TRADITIONAL LEADER CALLS FOR WITCHCRAFT TO BE CRIMINALISED

TRADITIONAL LEADER CALLS FOR WITCHCRAFT TO BE CRIMINALISED

A traditional leader from Mazabuka’s Chivuna area has urged the government to criminalise witchcraft, citing concerns over its increasing prevalence in the community.

Zone 16 senior headman, Raymond Mwiinga, stated that acts of witchcraft in the area had reached alarming levels.

Mwiinga alleged that the current law provided protection for those engaged in witchcraft by preventing accusations against them.

He explained that people in Zone 16 were no longer afraid to engage in such practices, raising concerns over its impact on society.

Meanwhile, Headman Bbiliki from the same area issued a warning to residents involved in witchcraft, stating that they risked being chased if found guilty of practising it.

He emphasised that witchcraft was detrimental to development, as it created confusion within the district.

ZIMBABWE HAILS ZAMBIA’S LIBERATION SUPPORT, CHAMPIONS DEVOLUTION AT 45TH INDEPENDENCE COMMEMORATION IN LUSAKA

ZIMBABWE HAILS ZAMBIA’S LIBERATION SUPPORT, CHAMPIONS DEVOLUTION AT 45TH INDEPENDENCE COMMEMORATION IN LUSAKA

Lusaka, Zambia – 17 May 2025

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to the Republic of Zambia, Her Excellency Mrs. Charity Charamba, has paid tribute to Zambia’s unwavering support during Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, describing the country as “a true ally in freedom” and reaffirming the deep-rooted bond between the two nations.

Speaking at a luncheon in Lusaka to mark Zimbabwe’s 45th Independence Anniversary, Ambassador Charamba praised Zambia’s historic role in providing sanctuary, resources, and solidarity to Zimbabwean freedom fighters during the war for independence.

“We remember and honour Zambia not just as a neighbour, but as a comrade-in-arms—one that stood with us during our darkest and most defining moments,” said Ambassador Charamba. “Our shared history is the foundation of our enduring friendship and strategic partnership.”

She acknowledged the continued cooperation between the two countries through platforms such as the Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation and the Joint Defence and Security Mechanism, highlighting these as vital in strengthening peace, security, and economic collaboration in the region.

The event was attended by high-level dignitaries including the Guest of Honour, Honourable Felix C. Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science, who represented Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema. Senior officials from the United Party for National Development (UPND), including Secretary General Batuke Imenda and National Youth Chairman Gilbert Liswaniso, also graced the occasion.

In line with this year’s theme, “Zimbabwe at 45: Devolve and Develop Together Towards Vision 2030,” Ambassador Charamba spotlighted the central role of decentralisation in shaping Zimbabwe’s future. She described devolution as a transformative pillar of the country’s development model, aimed at achieving upper-middle-income status by 2030.

“Devolution is not just a policy—it is a people-powered strategy that allows every community to define and drive its development,” she said.

“Under the leadership of His Excellency President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe is empowering its provinces and districts to take charge of their own growth, ensuring no place and no citizen is left behind.”

Ambassador Charamba also addressed Zimbabweans in the diaspora, whom she described as the “11th Province,” calling on them to actively support the national development agenda. She urged them to seize emerging investment opportunities in agriculture, infrastructure, tourism, manufacturing, and renewable energy, particularly at the local level where impact is most immediate.

She highlighted how devolution is already delivering tangible results. In response to the El Niño-induced drought, food aid has reached rural households while urban families have benefited from targeted cash transfers. Major infrastructure projects—including the upgrade of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and the rehabilitation of the Harare-Chirundu Highway—demonstrate decentralised development in action.

Ambassador Charamba also celebrated broader national milestones, including a bumper wheat harvest, increased adoption of solar energy, and the establishment of innovation hubs through the country’s Education 5.0 strategy. All, she noted, reflect a decentralised, community-centric approach to national transformation.

In her address with a toast, Ambassador Charamba honoured the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema and reaffirmed the unbreakable friendship between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

“As we look ahead to Zimbabwe’s 50th year of independence, we do so with gratitude to Zambia for walking with us in the past, and with hope for a shared future of peace, prosperity, and people-driven progress,” she said.

ZAMMSA CLARIFIES HEALTH CENTRE KITS PROCUREMENT PROCESS

ZAMMSA CLARIFIES HEALTH CENTRE KITS PROCUREMENT PROCESS

The Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) has refuted widespread claims circulating on social media concerning the procurement of Health Centre Kits.

Senior Corporate Communications Manager, Bradley Chingobe emphasized that there is no scandal surrounding the process and clarified that the procurement has followed all legal and regulatory procedures in line with the Public Procurement Act.

Mr. Chingobe says contrary to the assertions that the tender was cancelled; it had instead reached the recommendation stage and was under review by the Agency Procurement Committee which raised concerns regarding the capacity of a newly established supplier.

He notes that Mission Pharma, a longstanding international partner known for reliably supplying Health Centre Kits to over 2,000 primary health facilities every two months, was retained based on its proven track record.

Mr. Chingobe further confirmed that the process was revised to reinforce compliance and ensure continued service delivery.

He notes that while the international component has been awarded based on supplier capacity and experience, the local tender remains open to Zambian-based manufacturers, in line with ZAMMSA’s local empowerment policy.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, fairness, and accountability, assuring the public that all decisions were made with the best interests of the health sector in mind.

Diddy Attorney Mentions His Possible Bipolar Disorder Amid S333x Trafficking Trial

Cassie took the stand again today amid her ex Diddy’s long-awaited trial for alleged sex trafficking and racketeering.

Diddy’s long-awaited sex trafficking trial continues, and today, Cassie took the stand yet again. The songstress was cross-examined by the mogul’s legal team. His defense attorney Anna Estevao appeared to insinuate that Cassie believes his 2018 alleged rape could have been related to bipolar disorder.

Cassie accuses Diddy of raping her in 2018 after they had a conversation at dinner about breaking up. She said he was acting “nice but strangely” at dinner, per TMZ. She said he “wasn’t in his right mind,” however, because of the alleged assault. Estevao asked Cassie if she thought this “could be attributed to his bipolar disorder.”

“I guess so,” Cassie responded. This is the first time Diddy’s defense has brought up the idea that he could have bipolar disorder.

During a past interview with Playboy, however, the mogul shared that he’s been called that in the past when revealing he went to therapy following his split from Jennifer Lopez. “I’ve been called bipolar — I’m not; I just have very drastic mood swings,” he said at the time.

This isn’t all that happened in court today amid Diddy’s trial, however. Cassie was also questioned about a man named Jonathan Oddi. During an interview with police in 2018, Oddi alleged that he was Diddy’s “sex slave,” and that he’d slept with Cassie over a dozen times.

An audio recording of Cassie was played aloud in court. In it, she threatened a DJ who she believed could have had footage of an alleged freak off filmed by Oddi. She confirmed it was her voice in the recording, telling the court she “didn’t trust” Oddi. He’s currently behind bars for his alleged role in a shootout with police at the Trump hotel in Miami.

LUMEZI MAN MAULED BY HYENA AFTER LATE-NIGHT JOURNEY FROM PIECEWORK

LUMEZI MAN MAULED BY HYENA AFTER LATE-NIGHT JOURNEY FROM PIECEWORK

A 26 year old man of Chizindile Village, Chief Zumwanda, in Lumezi district is battling for his life after being attacked by a Hyena.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba told Breeze FM News that Gladson Banda was attacked by the wild animal around 03:00hrs today near Chizindile Village in Lumezi district.

He was on his way home from the Sikatengwa area, where he had gone to do piecework.

Mr. Mweemba explained that the previous day, Gladson Banda and his friend, Derrick Muhoni, 25, of Chimongo Village, had travelled to Sikatengwa for a piecework job.

After completing their work late in the evening, Muhoni advised Gladson to spend the night and travel home the following day.

However, Gladson refused, saying he had money for transport and would return home immediately.

He managed to board a vehicle heading to Chitala and was dropped off there at around 02:00 hours. From Chitala, he began walking home on foot.

As he was few metres away from home, he was attacked by a hyena and was only saved by a brother who heard him crying for help.

Unfortunately, he had already sustained an open wound on the right side of his stomach that resulted in protruding intestines whilst his toes on his right foot were also bitten off.

He was taken to Lumezi district hospital and his condition is currently unstable.
