ZESCO CABLES INTERCEPTED IN MANSA
Police in Mansa have intercepted six sacks of ZESCO copper cables at Kampala Check Point along the Mansa Luwingu Road, in Mansa district.
And a Tanzanian national has been arrested in connection with the cables suspected to have been stolen from vandalised ZESCO installations in Kasama district, Northern Province.
Luapula Province Police Commissioner, Mwala Yuyi has disclosed to ZANIS that a ZESCO employee, Peter Sichinga reported to Mansa Central Police that he received a tip-off on the suspected stolen cables loaded on Likili Passenger Bus Registration number BCE 1010 travelling from Kasama to Kitwe via Mansa.
Mr Yuyi said following Simuchimba’s report, a team comprising Zambia Police Officers and ZESCO Personnel led by the Senior Security Officer in charge for Luapula ZESCO Region, Collins Chuma rushed to Kampalala Security check Point in Mansa where a Likili Bus driven by Tembo Richard was intercepted carrying the said cables.
“After a thorough search of the Bus, six sacks containing suspected ZESCO copper cables and assorted peeled and burnt ZESCO service cables were recovered whose value is not yet ascertained,” Mr Yuyi said.
The suspect has since been arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property.

THE GAME CHANGER: No Games. No Tricks. Just The Truth. Keith Mweemba Is Ready.
THE GAME CHANGER: No Games. No Tricks. Just The Truth. Keith Mweemba Is Ready.
By BaNkweto- Nkweto Tembwe
Let’s set the record straight: Keith Mweemba is not running a smear campaign. He’s running a campaign of accountability.
Calling out irregularities and demanding transparency at FAZ is not an attack — it’s leadership. The same institutions that blocked earlier meetings now want to twist the narrative when Keith insists on doing things right?
Mweemba walks the talk. He’s consistent, grounded, and firm in belief that leadership means being answerable. If something went wrong under the previous leadership, it must be addressed. Silence is not an option.
This is not about individuals. It’s about systems, integrity, and restoring faith in Zambian football.
Let the people decide, freely and fairly:
Keith Mweemba is not a project. He is a complete package. He’s played the game. He knows the pitch. Off the field, he’s a proven corporate leader. His football story is real, traceable, and respected.
He’s not chasing shadows, he’s chasing truth.
Now, the facts:
The FAZ Constitution is clear: Financial statements MUST be presented to the AGM. So why is Football House ducking and dodging?
Accountability is not harassment. It’s not a smear. It’s the law.
Mweemba is demanding what the Constitution demands. That’s not desperation, that’s leadership.
To those twisting the truth: Accountability builds trust…..Secrecy destroys it.
This election is not about who’s being “targeted.” It’s about who is ready to lead. Keith Mweemba is ready. And he’s not afraid of the truth.

Judgment day, High court to deliver verdict in Joshlin Smith case this morning
This morning, May 2, 2025, the Western Cape High Court in Saldanha Bay is set to deliver its verdict in the high-profile case of six-year-old Joshlin Smith, who disappeared in February 2024.
Her mother, Racquel “Kelly” Smith, along with Jacquen “Boeta” Appollis and Steveno van Rhyn, faces charges of kidnapping and human trafficking.
The State alleges Kelly planned to sell her daughter to a sangoma for R20,000, based on controversial witness testimony.
The defense argues the evidence is unreliable and insufficient. If convicted, the accused face life imprisonment. The case has sparked national concern over child safety in marginalized communities.

Trump threatens sanctions over Iranian oil deals, raising tensions with China
U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to nations and entities purchasing Iranian oil or petrochemical products, declaring they will face immediate secondary sanctions.
The announcement forms part of Washington’s ongoing “maximum pressure” campaign aimed at cutting off Iran’s vital oil revenues, which the administration accuses of fueling Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and support for regional militant groups.
The decision is expected to significantly escalate diplomatic friction with China Iran’s largest oil customer which imported nearly 90% of the country’s crude oil and condensate exports in 2023. Chinese imports hit a record high of 1.8 million barrels per day in March 2025, underscoring the scale of potential fallout from Trump’s latest move.

AfriForum repairs road outside US ambassador’s Pretoria residence in protest over ANC failures
Civil rights group AfriForum has repaired a pothole outside the American ambassador’s residence in Waterkloof, Pretoria calling the act a symbolic protest against what it says is the ANC-led government’s failure both in governance and foreign diplomacy.
The group likened the neglected road to the deterioration of South Africa’s relationship with the United States, blaming municipal and national negligence.
AfriForum has previously urged the US to impose targeted sanctions on ANC leaders rather than penalise ordinary citizens, and dismissed ANC claims that it was spreading misinformation abroad.
Orlando Pirates’ title hopes take a hit after shock home loss to Sekhukhune United
Orlando Pirates’ title hopes take a hit after shock home loss to Sekhukhune United
Orlando Pirates’ dreams of lifting the 2024–25 Betway Premiership trophy took a heavy knock on April 30, as they slumped to a surprise 1-0 defeat against Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium.
The result not only ended their impressive home run but also left them 12 points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who eased past Richards Bay FC with a 3-0 win on the same night.
A well-taken header by Tresor Tshibwabwa in the 57th minute rising highest to meet Keletso Makgalwa’s corner sealed the upset and exposed a recurring flaw in the Buccaneers’ setup, vulnerability at set pieces. It’s a weakness that has haunted them lately, most notably in their CAF Champions League semifinal exit just weeks earlier.
Pirates bossed possession and carved out chances, with Bandile Shandu fluffing an early opportunity and Relebohile Mofokeng coming close. But once again, their lack of clinical edge in front of goal proved costly. To compound matters, defender Nkosinathi Sibisi received a red card late in the match, ruling him out of the all-important Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs.
Now sitting on 48 points after 21 games, Pirates remain in second place, but Sundowns with 58 points from 23 have firmly taken control of the title race. Adding to the pressure, Sekhukhune United, tactically superb under Eric Tinkler, moved within two points of the Buccaneers and are now firmly in the hunt for a CAF Confederation Cup berth.
Fans didn’t hold back, flooding social media with criticism of the team’s mentality and coach Jose Riveiro’s lineup choices. Many questioned whether Pirates still have the grit needed to challenge at the top.
Despite the title challenge looking increasingly out of reach, the season is far from lost. With seven matches remaining including a must-win clash against Sundowns and the Nedbank Cup still on the table, Pirates have everything to play for. But if they hope to finish strong, fixing their defensive lapses and rediscovering their scoring touch will be non-negotiable.
The upcoming Soweto derby offers a shot at redemption and a chance to restore some pride in what’s qu

U.S., Ukraine sign pivotal deal on critical minerals access
The United States and Ukraine have signed a major economic cooperation agreement granting Washington preferential access to Ukraine’s rich deposits of critical minerals, including rare earth elements, lithium, and graphite.
The agreement was signed in Kyiv by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Ukrainian Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. It establishes the United States-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund, a joint initiative aimed at supporting Ukraine’s post-war recovery while helping the U.S. reduce its dependence on Chinese mineral imports.
Under the deal, Ukraine will retain ownership of its mineral resources and maintain control over extraction operations. The fund will be co-managed on equal terms by both nations. In return, the U.S. will channel investments into Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts, with future military assistance potentially contributing to the fund’s balance.
WE ARE ON COURSE TO REDUCING THE COST OF LIVING – PRESIDENT HICHILEMA
WE ARE ON COURSE TO REDUCING THE COST OF LIVING – PRESIDENT HICHILEMA
April 1,2025
President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to reducing the cost of living and the cost of doing business in Zambia.
Speaking during the 2025 International Labour Day celebrations at Kaole Stadium in Mansa, President Hichilema said his administration has heard the concerns of citizens and is implementing practical solutions.
He announced that the recent reduction in fuel prices will lower production costs and help bring down the prices of essential commodities.
“We are on course to reduce the cost of living, and fuel reduction is just the beginning,” he said.
The President paid tribute to Zambian workers for driving the economy to grow by 4% despite last year’s severe drought.
He stressed that the economic growth achieved in a difficult year is a testament to the resilience and unity of both employees and employers.
The head of state has commended teachers, nurses, drivers, and other workers for their dedication in keeping the country running during hard times.
He also warned that employers who deny workers the right to unionize will not be tolerated under his administration.
President Hichilema said government will continue strengthening social security and has directed NAPSA to extend waivers to people affected by the drought.
“I have directed NAPSA to extend tax waivers so that our people can recover from the drought’s effects,” he said.
He emphasized that national events will continue to be celebrated across all provinces because Zambia is more than just Lusaka.
The President further urged all employers to comply with the newly approved minimum wage for bus and truck drivers.
Labour Minister Brenda Tambatamba said reforms are underway to improve the lives of workers.
And ZCTU President Blake Mulala has called for continued support of the fight against corruption.

“WEAKENED” OPPOSITION SEEK AUDIENCE WITH HH
“WEAKENED” OPPOSITION SEEK AUDIENCE WITH HH
A KBN TV EDITORIAL
When an advert went out on Tuesday announcing a joint press briefing by the opposition, the nation was gripped with great expectation about some potential big news they could have been waiting for to get a sense of direction as they count down to the elections next year.
The anxiety heightened even more as the joint briefing was called against the backdrop of an audio that threatened to tear the opposition unity apart. Although cracks linger, parties demonstrated resilience and a firm resolve to rise above setbacks.
However, after listening to yesterday’s briefing, it was very clear that the opposition didn’t have a punch of the much anticipated breaking news! They delivered nothing exciting to the itching ears of their supporters. A commendable show of unity and solidarity but one that lacked the message!
Instead, they gathered to remind President Hakainde Hichilema about his offer to dialogue.
Good as it may sound, the opposition that gathered as a collective, may have taken a dangerous sloppy political path that could potentially delay their progress even further.
By calling for dialogue 15 months before the general elections with a man who has been averse to the idea, the opposition demonstrated weakness, and HH should be feeling like he got them right in the spot he wanted them to be, intentionally or inadvertently – begging him for an audience.
Dialogue is good, but there is nothing that stops political strategists on the side of HH to milk that call for dialogue to his maximum advantage should he choose to meet the opposition after all, he would be the host and fully in charge.
He would control the flow, dictate the terms and later send the opposition away without according them any meaningful opportunity to present their grievances and dialogue.
Truth be told, if HH wanted dialogue, he would have done so over an inclusive economic recovery plan including the IMF bailout plan and handing back KCM to the limping Vedanta.
He would have initiated dialogue when several stakeholders including CSOs, Church Mother bodies, LAZ, the Media and political parties objected the enactment of Cyber Crimes laws.
He would have called for dialogue when the nation objected the infamous constitutional amendments which are showing signs of going ahead at whatever cost.
He would have called for dialogue when the nation was plunged into perpetual darkness which has now become a norm due to endless loadshedding with no solution in plain sight.
Today, there is irrefutable evidence that President Hichilema has shown unrelenting conviction to go ahead with whatever he sees necessary regardless of who opposes him. Not even the Americans could talk him out of assenting to the Cyber crimes laws.
It’s therefore surprising that the opposition chose to ignore what they already know about HH and still went ahead to beg him for an audience he has denied them for nearly four years.
At such a critical moment, the electorate are looking for an alternative leadership they can look upto in the same light they looked at the UPND as a Government in waiting prior to the 2021 general elections.
If we were to be brutally honest with each other as citizens, Zambia has more pressing issues than to try and prove a point that HH doesn’t keep his word using the dialogue line he uttered at the late Nawakwi’s funeral.
That’s an act of preaching to the converted. Zambians already know the list of promises that HH has walked away from.
Why would anyone want to punish his reputation over the dialogue you know he might not be willing to give? Even if he called for it, he might be the only one emerging to benefit from it politically and not necessarily to offer the nation a chance for solutions.
Infact, the dialogue might as well be a united opposition “endorsing” the leadership and candidature of HH. It’s all about PR optics and the opposition is playing right into the script.
By the time the opposition emerge from the dialogue venue, they won’t be able to manage or control the UPND propaganda that could follow.
Clearly, HH has managed to get the opposition where he wanted them to be – weak and begging him for an

I will do everything to ensure President Lungu is on the ballot in 2026- Miles Sampa
I have today stepped down as PF President and endorsed President Edgar Chagwa Lungu for 2026 under PF ticket, declares Miles Sampa this afternoon.
PF REUNITES AS MILES SAMPA BACKS LUNGU FOR 2026, BUT CHABINGA STILL OUT IN THE COLD
it was all smiles at the pf secretariat as sampa and lungu’s camps hugged it out — except for robert chabinga, whose expulsion still holds firm.
Lusaka, May 1st — In a dramatic turn that surprised no one and thrilled many in the Patriotic Front, Miles Sampa and Edgar Lungu buried the hatchet today at the PF Secretariat in Lusaka. Sampa officially threw his weight behind former President Edgar Lungu as the PF’s 2026 presidential candidate, marking a moment of unity in a party long divided.
But while party bigwigs smiled for the cameras, one man was notably missing from the group hug — Robert Chabinga, whose expulsion remains very much intact. As PF sails toward 2026 with renewed unity, it seems Chabinga will need his own political lifeboat.

Time’s Up: Where Are the 156 Ambulances, Mr. Nicholas Phiri?
Time’s Up: Where Are the 156 Ambulances, Mr. Nicholas Phiri?
By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma
The clock has struck. The calendar reads 1 May 2025. And the question Zambians are asking loudly and rightfully is this: Where are the 156 ambulances, Mr. Nicholas Phiri?
You, Mr. Phiri—the Permanent Secretary for Technical Services at the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development—made a public, unapologetic pledge. If the ambulances were not delivered by May 2025, you would resign. You were not coerced. You were not misquoted. You made that promise to the Zambian people of your own volition. Now the deadline has arrived, and the ambulances are nowhere to be seen.
This is not politics. This is about principle.
This moment is not about scoring points. It is about demanding accountability from public servants who believe they can make promises without consequence. You made a time-bound commitment tied directly to your own integrity. The date is here. The delivery is not. So where is your resignation?
The Zambian people are not fools. They have seen this tactic before—bold pronouncements made for headlines, only to be quietly forgotten when the moment of reckoning arrives. But this time, the people are holding you to your word.
These ambulances were not just vehicles. They were symbols of hope in a collapsing healthcare system. Communities across the country are still carrying pregnant women in wheelbarrows and rushing the injured in makeshift transport. You knew the urgency. You understood the stakes. You made the promise anyway.
Now, you owe the people more than silence.
No one is interested in excuses. Procurement delays? Save them. Political blame games? We have heard them all. If you knew the system would not meet the deadline, then you should not have made the commitment. But you did. And now the nation is watching.
Mr. Phiri, either the ambulances arrive today, or you must honor your word and resign. No speeches. No vague statements. No spin. Just action.
This is not merely about ambulances. This is about trust, credibility, and the integrity of leadership. If public officials are allowed to make promises without accountability, the erosion of governance will continue unchecked. The people are done tolerating leaders who talk big and deliver little.
Let it be clear: the Zambian people are not distracted. Health workers are not amused. Families losing loved ones due to delayed emergency responses are not patient. You made a commitment tied to the lives and well-being of millions—and you failed to deliver.
Your time is up.
So again we ask, without ambiguity: Will you deliver the ambulances, or will you deliver your resignation?
The people are watching. And this time, they will not forget.
Nevers Mumba’s Hypocrisy on Opposition Unity – A Misguided and Politically Compromised Statement
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: May 1, 2025
RE: Nevers Mumba’s Hypocrisy on Opposition Unity – A Misguided and Politically Compromised Statement
We have taken note of recent remarks made by MMD leader Nevers Mumba, in which he attempted to advise opposition political alliances UKA and Tonse on matters of unity and leadership. It is both laughable and deeply hypocritical for Dr. Mumba—a known ally of the ruling UPND regime—to position himself as a voice of reason for the opposition.
Dr. Mumba’s statements are not only politically misplaced, but they serve as a veiled extension of the ruling party’s propaganda machine. His alignment with UPND is well-documented, and his credibility as a neutral player in Zambia’s political space is nonexistent. Therefore, he has no mandate—formal or moral—to comment on the inner workings of opposition coalitions that he neither supports nor understands.
It is particularly shameful that he would dismiss Dr. Fred M’membe’s valid concerns about the ruling party’s desperate attempts to fracture and frustrate emerging opposition unity. These comments reveal more about Dr. Mumba’s priorities—protecting the establishment—than they do about fostering genuine democratic progress.
UKA and Tonse are not answerable to political actors who have chosen to side with a government failing to deliver on its promises. We remain committed to building a broad-based, accountable, and people-driven movement to rescue Zambia from economic decay, political repression, and elite-driven manipulation.
We urge Dr. Mumba to focus his energy on addressing the growing dissatisfaction within the UPND and to stop masquerading as a neutral elder statesman. He has made his political bed—it is time he lies in it.

ERB EXTENDS EMERGENCY TARIFF RELIEF, BENEFITING HOUSEHOLDS AND SMALL BUSINESSES
ERB EXTENDS EMERGENCY TARIFF RELIEF, BENEFITING HOUSEHOLDS AND SMALL BUSINESSES
Lusaka, May 1 (Astro TV) – Zambia’s Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has extended the emergency electricity tariff structure introduced earlier by Zesco Limited, delivering relief to over half a million households and thousands of small businesses amid economic pressures linked to the ongoing power crisis.
According to official figures, 537,496 residential customers — representing 56% of Zesco’s total consumer base — received tariff reductions of up to 20%. The adjusted tariff structure notably preserved the “lifeline” tariff for the most vulnerable households, with reductions of 20% and 5% applied to tariff bands R1 and R2 respectively.
“The emergency tariffs ensures that electricity remains affordable for ordinary Zambians,” said Zesco in a communication issued in November, 2024 following the granting of the initial emergency tariffs application. “Low to middle-income households have been shielded from the full brunt of the emergency pricing.”
In the commercial category, 14,172 small enterprises — including barbershops, welders, salons and market vendors — also benefited from a 15% reduction under the C1 tariff band. The measure is seen as a key – intervention to cushion small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from rising operational costs triggered by inflation and reduced business activity.
“This tariff relief offers a lifeline to SMEs, which are critical to job creation and economic resilience,” said an analyst from a local business chamber.
Additionally, essential public services and infrastructure — including government hospitals, clinics, schools, old people’s homes, orphanages, street lighting and traffic signals — were exempted from the emergency tariffs altogether. This exemption is intended to safeguard basic services such as water pumping, sanitation, and healthcare during the ongoing energy crisis.
The ERB says the emergency tariffs are part of a broader strategy to manage Zambia’s power deficit while minimising social and economic disruption.

KASEMPA POLICE INVESTIGATE MURDER ARISING FROM “KIKONDO” (MOVING COFFIN) PRACTICE IN NYOKA CHIEFDOM
May 01,2025-Kasempa Police Station is investigating a tragic incident involving the unlawful killing of a male adult believed to have been buried alive following a suspected practice of “Kikondo” (moving coffin) in Shapela Village, Nyoka Chiefdom of Kasempa District.
The incident occurred on April 30,2025, between 10:00 hours and 18:00 hours, and was officially reported to the police at 15:00 hours by Chief Nyoka, Mr. Subakangu Shadrick, aged 49, of Mwepu Village.
Preliminary investigations reveal that on April 29, 2025 around 09:00 hours, the deceased male person, Allan Mewa, aged 22, drowned in a shallow stream known as Mushingashi while fishing. His body was retrieved by fellow fishermen and arrangements were made by family members to bury him in Nyoka area.
However, during preparations for burial, a mob from the village, acting against the counsel of Chief Nyoka who had advised that the death be treated as natural, forcefully initiated the traditional practice of “Kikondo.” This practice is erroneously believed to reveal individuals responsible for deaths through witchcraft.
The coffin, allegedly moving on its own under spiritual influence, was led by the mob and directed to the residence of Mr. Bowas Ludiya, aged 62, who was both the grandfather to the deceased and Headman of Shapela Village. The mob accused him of causing his grandson’s death, citing past disputes over fish and his alleged reputation for practicing witchcraft.
The mob physically assaulted Mr. Ludiya and forcibly took him to the graveyard where preparations to bury the young man were underway. In a horrifying act, the mob buried Mr. Ludiya alive by placing the coffin of the deceased Allan Mewa on top of him and covering the grave.
Kasempa Police officers who responded to the report found that both bodies were still in the same grave. They have since directed that the grave be marked for possible exhumation. A docket for murder has been opened and investigations have been launched, though no arrests have been made yet as both families have since deserted their homes.
It is important to note that this is the second such incident reported in Kasempa District involving the burial of an individual alive due to Kikondo practices. This deeply disturbing trend must be stopped.
The Zambia Police Service strongly condemns these unlawful, inhumane, and barbaric acts. No individual has the right to take the law into their own hands regardless of cultural beliefs or suspicion of witchcraft. Such actions constitute serious criminal offences under the laws of Zambia.
The Provincial Police Command is making arrangements to immediately deploy officers to camp in Nyoka Chiefdom. The deployed officers will not only assist with ongoing investigations but will also undertake extensive community sensitization to educate residents about the dangers and illegality of mob justice and harmful traditional practices such as Kikondo.
The Zambia Police Service appeals to members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police. Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of suspects involved in this incident is urged to report to the nearest police station.

CHIPATA PENTECOSTAL PAPA DEFILES CONGREGANT WHILE WIFE PREACHES
CHIPATA PENTECOSTAL PAPA DEFILES CONGREGANT WHILE WIFE PREACHES
POLICE in Chipata have separated a Pentecostal religious dramatist with an appetite for children from his carolite creams, pointy open heeled Papa shoes and anointing oil for allegedly defiling his 15 year old congregant as his wife was preaching to his followers.
34 year old Papa running under the stage name, Prophet Victor Raphael Kalima is said to have tossed aside his cheap Kamwalaish looking self styled swag to offload his sexual desires on his 15 year old congregant under his roof.
In an interview with Kalemba, Eastern Province police commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident happened on April, 27 2025 around 13:00 hours in Hillsview compound and the report was made yesterday.
Mweemba disclosed that the self styled prophet who owns Christ Grace Ministry in Motel Compound started by brewing an ungodly suggestion via a phone call as revealed by the little girl where he invited her to go to his home.
This allegedly happened while his wife was busy in front of their small crowd.
Trusting that it was her own spiritual father that invited her home, the minor decided to ignore her spiritual father’s wive’s sermon in church and quickly booked a motorbike straight to the accused’s place in Hills View Compound.
In no time, the child arrived at the Papa’s house where she was immediately served with chocolate ice cream which the minor rejected stating that she was not a fan of chocolate.
Upon her refusal, prophet Kalima decided to give her water and later undressed and caressed her before taking away her innocence.
“She later found herself naked. That was how he sent a K50 to her Airtel money account and she went home, because of her fear to contract the virus and to become pregnant, she decided to report to her guardian who advised her to call him and they recorded the conversation,” Mweemba told Kalemba.
After the phone call, the aunt decided to call the child’s mother who reported the matter to the police.
After a Police medical report form was issued, the girl was found with swollen and painful private parts and was referred to Chipata Central Hospital for medical examination.
“The arrest was made. More updates to follow as investigations have been instituted,” he said.

ConCourt rules prison laptop ban unconstitutional in win for inmates’ education
ConCourt rules prison laptop ban unconstitutional in win for inmates’ education
South Africa’s Constitutional Court has ruled that banning personal laptops in prison cells is unconstitutional, affirming inmates’ right to further education.
The case, brought by inmate Mbalenhle Ntuli, challenged the Department of Correctional Services’ policy as a violation of the right to education.
The court found the ban overly broad and detrimental to rehabilitation. While prisons may still impose reasonable restrictions for security, the ruling emphasizes that educational access behind bars is a right, not a privilege.
The decision is seen as a potential step toward broader prison reform.

SADC commences withdrawal of SAMIDRC from the Eastern Democratic
Republic of the Congo (DRC)
01 May 2025, Gaborone, Botswana: The Southern African Development Community
(SADC) has officially commenced with the withdrawal from the Eastern DRC as of 29
April 2025.
The withdrawal is being conducted by road, transiting through the Republic
of Rwanda to the respective Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs).
This action is in accordance with the directive of the Extraordinary Summit of SADC
Heads of State and Government held on 13 March 2025, which announced the
termination of the SAMIDRC mandate and endorsed the phased withdrawal of the
Mission.
The decision is further supported by the outcomes of the engagement held in Goma,
DRC, on 28 March 2025, between the Chiefs of Defence Force of the Troop
Contributing Countries (TCCs) and the leadership of the Alliance Fleuve
Congo/Movement of 23 March (AFC/M23).
As part of this process, SADC is withdrawing its troops, together with their military
equipment, from Goma and Sake through a designated route via Rwanda.
SAMIDRC was deployed on 15 December 2023, with troops from the Republics of
Malawi, South Africa and the United Republic of Tanzania.
The Mission was mandated to support the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) in restoring peace and stability in the eastern part of the country.
However, the security environment in the region has significantly deteriorated since
the beginning of 2025. The withdrawal of FARDC from several frontline positions left
SAMIDRC forces increasingly vulnerable. As a result, on 28 January 2025, M23/AFC
forces captured the city of Goma, which remains under their control, along with the
town of Sake.
SADC reaffrms its continued commitment to regional peace and security and remains
engaged in supporting diplomatic and political efforts towards a sustainable resolution to the conflict in Eastern DRC

Thabo Bester could benefit from laptop ruling, Constitutional Court’s decision stirs public outrage
The Constitutional Court has ruled that prisoners have the right to use personal laptops in their cells for educational purposes, striking down the Department of Correctional Services’ (DCS) blanket ban as unconstitutional.
While hailed as a step forward for rehabilitation, the April 30 judgment has stirred controversy particularly around convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester, who could now benefit from the ruling.
The court upheld a November 2023 Supreme Court of Appeal decision, finding that the DCS policy infringed on inmates’ constitutional right to further education. The ruling allows prisoners enrolled in recognized educational programs to use personal, offline-only computers in their cells. The DCS has one year to amend its policies accordingly.
Bester, notorious for his crimes and his dramatic 2022 escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre, has long pushed for access to a laptop.
He filed a High Court application in November 2024 and later approached the Constitutional Court after his complaints were dismissed. While there’s no confirmation that Bester will receive a device, the ruling provides a legal pathway should he enroll in an accredited course.
However, his past use of technology behind bars has sparked public concern. In 2023, parliamentary inquiries revealed Bester used a laptop and cellphone while incarcerated to defraud victims, despite being enrolled in a distance learning program. Critics argue he exploited weak oversight and could do so again.
In response, the DCS has pledged to implement strong safeguards, including limiting devices to offline use, verifying study programs, and conducting regular inspections. Spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo emphasized that security would not be compromised.

Stop Twisting the Archbishop’s Words: A Call for Media
Integrity
A disturbing trend has emerged from the United Party for National
Development (UPND) Media Team, the deliberate misrepresentation of Archbishop Alick Banda’s words during Mass for the late Pope Francis on
Friday April 25th, 2025 at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus.
It is being widely circulated that the Archbishop “commended” President
Hakainde Hichilema for his display of statesmanship.
This assertion is not only
misleading but borders on a dangerous distortion of a sacred moment meant for praying and remembering the late Pope Francis.
Let us be clear; at no point in his homily did Archbishop Banda issue a
commendation.
Yes, there was a handshake between him and the President, but a handshake, with absent sincere dialogue and contrition, is not a symbol of reconciliation; it is an empty gesture.
A handshake alone does not erase months, even years, of tension, antagonism, or political abuse directed at the
Church and its leaders.

OPPOSITION TO FIELD ONE CANDIDATE IN LUMEZI
OPPOSITION TO FIELD ONE CANDIDATE IN LUMEZI
…as they condemn UPND for undermining democracy over Munir Zulu case
Lusaka… Wednesday April 30, 2025 — A coalition of opposition leaders and the civil society has accused the UPND government of orchestrating a calculated erosion of Zambia’s democratic values, warning that the recent treatment of Lumezi Member of Parliament Munir Zulu is indicative of a broader strategy to manipulate parliamentary representation and consolidate unchecked power.
Speaking during a joint press briefing on Tuesday, leaders from various opposition parties—including Fred M’membe – SP, Sakwiba Sikota, SC-UKA/ ULP, Ernest Mwansa, SC-ZWW, Given Lubinda-Tonse/ PF, Chishala Kateka-UKA/ NHP and Nkandu Luo-Tonse/ PF —described Hon Zulu’s arrest and subsequent legal troubles as politically motivated.
Bishop Trevor Mwamba-UNIP, Jackson Silavwe-GPZ, Peter Chanda-NCP, Thomas Zulu-Gen Z, Muhabi Lungu-ZWW, and Marian Mwango-SP formed part of the speakers.
They asserted that the ruling party is using state institutions to “steal seats they failed to win in the general election.”
“There is a disturbing trend here,” charged Dr. M’membe. “From Kwacha to Kabushi, to Kawambwa, Pambashe, Petauke which was narrowly rescued and now Lumezi! We are witnessing the abuse of legal and parliamentary procedures to dislodge opposition MPs and tilt the numbers in Parliament.”
At the centre of the latest storm is the handling of Munir Zulu’s seat.
The opposition has taken issue with the Speaker’s directive to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to begin the process of declaring the Lumezi seat vacant, despite the fact that Hon Zulu has not exhausted the legal channels available to challenge his conviction and sentencing.
“This is a direct assault on due process,” read Dr. M’membe. “No citizen, regardless of political affiliation, should be stripped of their seat without the benefit of a fair hearing. This is not justice; it is expedience masquerading as law.”
The opposition leaders argue that the ruling party’s endgame is to create an artificial majority in Parliament, enabling it to push through constitutional amendments without broad consensus—a move they warn would severely compromise Zambia’s democratic framework.
“If this continues,” warned Dr M’membe, “we will respond decisively. Lumezi will be the line in the sand. We will unite behind a single candidate and ensure the UPND suffers a humiliating defeat there. Let that be the message going into 2026: Zambia will not tolerate authoritarianism.”
The group further reiterated its willingness to engage in national dialogue, but took issue with what they see as President Hakainde Hichilema’s insincerity.
“We have asked for dialogue several times. We are not desperate to meet him, but we will not allow him to later claim we refused,” said Dr. M’membe. “Let him name the place, the time, and we will be there. But he must stop misleading the nation with empty rhetoric. Anasheko ubufi.”
In closing, the leaders called for urgent national introspection.
“Democracy is not just about elections. It’s about fairness, compromise, and justice. What’s happening now undermines all of that. Zambians are suffering. They want solutions, not schemes. If this trend is not arrested, our democracy is in serious peril,” they said.

PS KAWANA DISMISSES PF FACTION CLAIMS THAT PRESIDENT HICHILEMA IS DELIBERATELY WORKING TO DESTROY THE NATION
PS KAWANA DISMISSES PF FACTION CLAIMS THAT PRESIDENT HICHILEMA IS DELIBERATELY WORKING TO DESTROY THE NATION
By: Sun FM TV Reporter
Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has dismissed claims by the Patriotic Front (PF) faction that President Hakainde Hichilema is deliberately working to destroy the nation.
Mr. Kawana stated that the Head of State is not doing anything wrong and described the opposition’s accusations as disappointing, though not surprising. He added that it is ironic for the opposition to make such claims, given their own track record of wrongdoing while in government.
He further noted that President Hichilema has made significant efforts to restructure the debt accumulated by the PF, which was allegedly misappropriated under the pretence of investing in institutions such as ZESCO and Zambia Railways where no tangible investments were made.
The Permanent Secretary has since urged opposition parties to acknowledge the progress made by the current government and give credit where it is due, instead of spreading falsehoods about the President.

HOW CHILUBA BUGGED MWANAWASA’S PHONE
HOW CHILUBA BUGGED MWANAWASA’S PHONE
The personal and professional relationship between President Frederick Chiluba and his Vice-President Levy Mwanawasa kept on deteriorating leading to the latter’s resignation in July 1994. Mwanawasa felt Chiluba was deliberately alienating him so as to force him to quit his position because the MMD government had departed from the promises it made to Zambians and was now embracing corruption and bad governance.
According to Mwanawasa, it was during this time of strained relations between him and the President that signs of poor governance began to emerge. He observed that the government was increasingly becoming less accountable and transparent, almost as if it was reneging on the very principles that defined the MMD. He was not consulted on major issues, he said. He noticed that people like Michael Sata and Vernon Mwaanga were emerging more powerful. He was being sidelined:
“I was there merely to warm the seat because shortly before and after the elections, I was extremely popular, as I had played a very pivotal role in the fight [to return to multiparty politics]. People loved me because of the many court cases I handled during this fight; I obtained many court injunctions. I got the impression that President Chiluba was not giving me the boot because the government would become unstable as I was very popular.
Anyway, the poor governance continued. One time [in June, 1994], President Chiluba went out of the country for about three weeks and I was
left as acting President. During this period, the then Director-General of Medical Stores, Dr Kamanga, came to me and said, ‘I have received many instructions from the Minister of Health, Mr Michael Sata, that I should employ his relative.’ He showed me a note in which he was instructed to employ this relative to a senior management job.
He said, ‘I am not prepared to give him this job because he is not qualified.’ I said, ‘You don’t have to give him the job if he is not qualified.’
Later, I received information that Sata gave instructions to whoever was permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health to pay rent for his offices in Farmers House. Mr Sata was in arrears so the ministry was instructed to pay rent for him. There were a few other directives. I said, ‘What should we do now?’ I said, ‘This is bad.’ I reported the matter to the late justice Robert Kapembwa who was chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission [ACC]. I said, ‘I am not a policeman, but investigate this matter. It appears there is corruption here.’ All in all, there were five counts.
So he investigated. I asked him later what he had found. He said, ‘Out of the five counts, we have found four good ones and we have referred them to the DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions]. The DPP was taking long. So I phoned Dr Ludwig Sondashi, who was the Minister of Justice. I said, ‘What is the position on the case of Sata because I am told the Director of Public Prosecutions has been asked for his fiat?’
The DPP wrote to Dr Sondashi, saying that out of these counts, there were about two or three good ones and I have given authority for Mr Sata to be arrested and charged.’ When Dr Sondashi received that letter, he sent me a copy.
At that stage, the stage was set for Sata to be arrested. I can’t remember if the ACC went to him or not, but at the time President Chiluba came back in the country. And it appears that justice Kapembwa briefed him about the matter.
At the same time, I asked for permission that I wanted to tour Luapula Province. So I went on a tour of Luapula Province. On the last day of my tour [July 1, 1994], President Chiluba decided to go to Ndola and in his delegation he took Sata.
On arrival at Ndola International Airport, he was quoted as having said that, ‘I won’t permit quarrels in my Cabinet. I go out for only two weeks and I find that they are even arresting each other.’ He said a lot of things in Ndola. I heard this on radio and I was furious. I decided that when I went back to Lusaka, I was going to tender my resignation.”
At that time, Dr Sondashi was in Livingstone. He telephoned Mwanawasa and told him that he would resign too. He wanted to join Mwanawasa at a press conference so that they could resign together.
Mwanawasa did not favour the idea. He said, ‘Look, we can’t do that. Let it not seem as if we had made a pact. If you want, you announce your resignation in Livingstone and I will announce mine in Lusaka, but let me begin the show.’
Using a helicopter, Mwanawasa started off for Lusaka from Luapula. But before he left, he phoned President Chiluba, asking him when he would arrive in Lusaka.
‘Tonight,’ he replied.
‘Can I come and see you?’ Mwanawasa enquired.
‘Okay’, answered President Chiluba.
In the evening, Mwanawasa went to State House. He began to complain to the President about what the President was saying against him. But before he could continue, Chiluba said, ‘I know you have come to tell me that you are resigning. You have been talking with Sondashi.’
Mwanawasa said, ‘Mr President, when I was talking with Sondashi, we were just the two of us. I was alone in the room and I know that Sondashi was alone in his room. You know that I want to resign, yes, it’s true. We discussed this matter. I can’t imagine that you have been bugging my phones.’
Then he said, ‘Yes, I go out of the country, then you arrest one of my trusted ministers!’ Chiluba went on to say a lot of other things that disconcerted Mwanawasa.
Mwanawasa replied, ‘I didn’t arrest him. I referred him to the law enforcement agency because what he was doing is contrary to what
we told the people. We told the people that we will run a transparent government. But this minister is engaging in corruption. As far as I am concerned, there was justification for taking him to ACC.’
Then Chiluba softened. He said, ‘You see, mwaiche wandi [my young man], you and I have gotten on very well. There are times when you have come to my house [official residence] with your family and we have dinner together. We are a family. Sometimes, there are prob- lems which come in between but tulibaume [we are men]; we should learn to resolve them.’
Mwanawasa said, ‘Mr President, I am resigning because you can’t take a man in your delegation who has committed offences and when you arrive in Ndola you start making statements as if I am in the wrong.’
Mwanawasa recounted what ensued later in these words:
We talked and I realised that if I persisted in saying that I am resigning, he was going to issue a statement immediately that I have fired him and the effect of my resignation will not be understood because I will be a fired person. So I said, ‘Okay, Mr President, I have understood what you have said. I will think about it. I will come and see you tomorrow.’
I went home and the following day [July 3, 1994], I called my secretary and dictated a statement of resignation. I told her to come with a type- writer to my residence. So she typed the letter at Government House. Then I instructed my private secretary, Jeston Mulando, to call for an immediate press conference. I also asked him to arrange to deliver to State House my letter of resignation. So as I was addressing a press conference, my letter of resignation was delivered to President Chiluba. I told the press, ‘As I am speaking to you, I have already tendered in my resignation letter.’ And I gave my reasons for the resignation.

SOME INDIVIDUALS IN PF WITH PRESIDENTIAL AMBITIONS ARE CREATING CONFUSION IN THE TONSE ALLIANCE
SOME INDIVIDUALS IN PF WITH PRESIDENTIAL AMBITIONS ARE CREATING CONFUSION IN THE TONSE ALLIANCE.
By Chishala Chilufya: Political & Social Analyst.
It is very unfortunate, that some elements with insatiable presidential appetite within PF have not stood down on their ambitions disregarding the unanimous decision to field ECL.
Some known individuals in the PF who have presidential ambitions are creating confusion in the Tonse Alliance by holding dark corner clandestine meetings to undermine the PF leadership led by Edgar Lungu.
As the nation may recall that during the memorial service for the late President Michael Chilufya Sata the founder President for Patriotic Front at embassy park the Presidential burial site on the 28th October 2023, President Edgar Lungu announced his coming back into active politics, during that occasion President Lungu outlined the way he wanted to participate in politics, he didn’t hide, he was very clearly categorical that he is going to work with all political parties, CSOs and like minded individuals who are progressive regardless of the region, ethnicity and tribe.
After the contested and erroneous ruling by the Constitutional Court that President Lungu was ineligible to contest the 2026 general elections, President Lungu told the Zambian people and the world that he has a PLAN B.
Please allow him to unveil PLAN B to its fullest fruition in the interest of the Zambian people at the appropriate time.
In politics you don’t allow your opponent to know your plans, if your opponent knows your plan then it ceases to be a strategy and would not achieve its objective.
The confusion in the Tonse alliance is being created to frustrate President Lungu by few individuals in the PF who have Presidential ambitions. They want President Lungu and other opposition political party Presidents who are for the progressive ideas to lose focus.
This is the third time we are seeing the Zambian people coming together regarding their ambitions to work together. This happened during colonial time to obtain Independence and the second time was in 1990 to introduce Multipartism from a one-party state.
Those people who are good students of history can tell us as a nation on how presidential candidates were chosen, they did come straight from political parties or founder leaders of political parties.
Presidents are chosen by the people. Alliance Presidents from Tonse Alliance should have open-minds that the 2026 Presidential candidate can come from any of the Alliance Presidents, inside members or from outside.
The Tonse Alliance draft Constitution is not a legal document it is just a guiding paper which proposed how the Alliance can function in the interim. Nothing is cast in concrete on a stone like the 10 commandments, everything can be adjusted to make the Alliance effective and accommodate everyone progressively.
The draft Constitution cannot be used to start undermining each other.
The majority Zambian people want to support the Tonse Alliance, but the behavior of individuals in the Alliance is not attractive.
It the collective humble expectation of many Zambian to all the leaders in Tonse Alliance to learn to embrace each other and work together, regardless of background, region, ethnicity and tribe. It is no doubt that Patriotic Front is the leading political party in the Tonse Alliance but, PF should not hold a sense of unfettered entitlement.
This battle is for everyone regardless of how small, and in so doing PF must remind themselves what they went through before and after the 2021 General Elections that is a very good lesson and experience to learn from.
To other leaders in the Tonse Alliance, do not use social media to fight your differences in the Alliance. All the positions you are occupying are just for the interim purpose.
The position of the Chairperson and the Secretary General in the Tonse Alliance is for the Patriotic Front. These positions also are for the interim. President Lungu appointed Patriotic Front vice president Honorable Given Lubinda as a chairman to Act on his behalf because the vice chairman who is Professor Dr. Danny Pule is currently abroad.
This time around it’s not only politicians who are going to decide the next President of Zambian, but the people themselves will have a bigger say because they are the greatest stakeholders.
We are 73 ethnic groupings, 10 provinces, 20 million plus Zambians, all these people have a share to decide who will be our next President. PF presidential aspiring candidates should not be jittery for positions let’s wait for the right time to come. Leadership comes from God.
Lastly, show maturity, unity, togetherness and love these things will make people start believing in PF and subsequently Tonse Alliance as we rally behind our sole 2026 presidential candidate Dr Edgar Lungu.
This time around Region and Ethnic Politics is not going to work, Zambians have learnt a bitter lesson.
Zambia’s Media Warned – Embrace AI with Ethics or Watch Press Freedom Crumble
Zambia’s Media Warned – Embrace AI with Ethics or Watch Press Freedom Crumble
Zambia’s media industry has officially been put on notice: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic buzzword it’s here, embedded in newsrooms, shaping narratives, and threatening to bulldoze journalistic integrity if left unchecked.
At a tense pre-commemoration conference for World Press Freedom Day held at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana didn’t sugarcoat his message. Delivered on his behalf by HR Director Bernard Domingo, his remarks were a direct call-out to media houses riding the AI wave without a compass.
“When misused, AI doesn’t just misinform it manipulates, surveils, and shreds the fabric of editorial independence,” Kawana warned. “This is not a tech experiment it’s a battle for the soul of journalism.”
In a media landscape already suffocating under political pressure, economic instability, and shrinking newsroom budgets, the arrival of AI is both a potential lifeline and a loaded gun. The risk? Newsrooms surrendering their credibility to algorithms that value clicks over truth, speed over depth, and data over conscience.
MISA Zambia Chairperson Lorraine Mwanza didn’t mince words either. “AI is not just a tool anymore it’s a weapon,” she said. “It can be used to streamline investigations, but without ethical boundaries, it will distort reality, erode public trust, and drown out independent journalism.”
Mwanza urged media institutions to stop dragging their feet and invest in ethical AI training, digital literacy, and capacity building. “The media cannot afford to be ignorant or arrogant about the risks. We are already seeing headlines rewritten by machines with zero regard for truth,” she added.
This year’s World Press Freedom Day, themed “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media”, comes at a time when many Zambian outlets are quietly integrating AI tools without public transparency or internal guidelines.
The message from the conference was clear: adapt with ethics or perish with irrelevance.
As AI continues to upend global information flows, Zambia’s media has a choice take control, set the standards, and lead responsibly. Or keep sleepwalking into a digital apocalypse where truth is optional, accountability is dead, and the press becomes a puppet of algorithms.
The countdown has begun.
