FODEP WARNS KAMWBILI’S ARREST MAY APPEAR POLITICALLY MOTIVATED

FODEP WARNS KAMWBILI’S ARREST MAY APPEAR POLITICALLY MOTIVATED

By Joseph Kaputula

The Foundation for Democratic Process-FODEP has warned that recent arrests of political figures, such as that of former Information Minister Chishimba Kambwili, risk creating a public perception that state institutions are being used by the ruling party to silence opponents.

On Wednesday, Mr Kambwili was arrested while in prison prior to his release yesterday for illegal entry into Zimbabwe, an offence reportedly committed in December last year.

Reacting to the arrest, FODEP Executive Director Elijah Rubvuta argues that even if an arrest is legally justified, the way the public perceives the justice process is equally important.

Mr Rubvuta has called for a consistent, transparent and fair application of the law to preserve public confidence and protect democratic norms, noting that a robust democracy depends not only on strict legal compliance but also on adherence to the spirit and purpose of the law.

Acting PF president Given Lubinda says as Zambia gets closer to 2026 general elections, more opposition political parties leaders will be taken to prison on “trumped-up” charges.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Revelation on Wednesday over the upholding of an 18-months  prison conviction of Raphael Nakacinda by the Lusaka High Court, Lubinda said more people would be sent to prison for simply resisting the “bad”  governance of the UPND government.

“For members of the Patriotic Front and all peace loving Zambians, this is actually confirmation of what l have been saying that as we get closer to elections in 2026, more and more

Opposition being destabilised for failing to get organised – Fr Mukosa

By Mubanga Mubanga

Social teacher Fr Mukosa Chewe says the opposition political party are not getting organised, the more reason the government is destabilising them.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Revelation on Wednesday, on the state of opposition political parties currently, Fr Mukosa who is a Catholic parish priest at St Francis of Assisi Kapesha in Mansa, said the opposition were not getting organised.

“You can’t go to the ruling party, and tell them ‘please stop destabilising the opposition’. If you are my opponent, my role  is to destabilise you. And that is quite natural, humanly speaking. Because when you get destabilised,  then l can thrive right? Who doesn’t want to win elections? So they will always destabilise the opposition if they have

CITIZENS FIRST ACCUSES GOVERNMENT OF VIOLATING FREEDOM OF WORSHIP

CITIZENS FIRST ACCUSES GOVERNMENT OF VIOLATING FREEDOM OF WORSHIP

Citizens First Party President Harry Kalaba has condemned the decision by the Zambia Police Service to block Independence Eve overnight prayers at the OYDC in Lusaka.

Mr. Kalaba says the action, which stopped hundreds of worshippers led by Apostle Sunday Sinyangwe, was a clear violation of citizens’ rights to freedom of worship and assembly.

He dismissed a statement from State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka, who said President Hakainde Hichilema did not instruct the police to block the prayers, describing it as an afterthought meant to manage public backlash.

Mr. Kalaba said it was inconceivable that the police could move to stop such a significant Christian gathering without clearance from higher authorities, adding that the incident reflects what he termed a worrying state of governance under the UPND administration.

He further stated that the decision to block the prayers on the eve of Independence Day goes against the spirit of freedom and dishonors the sacrifices of Zambia’s founding fathers.

Mr. Kalaba noted that Apostle Sinyangwe’s “Standing in the Gap” overnight prayers have become an annual tradition, bringing Christians together to pray for the nation and seek solutions to challenges such as corruption, high cost of living, and unemployment.

He added that the President’s call for investigations into the incident was not enough, saying decisive action should have been taken, including suspending officers involved pending investigations.

https://youtu.be/Y6tzZtpBlMA?si=ycRBdeR_fVGD_WnM

Mr. Kalaba has since demanded that State House updates the nation on the outcome of the investigations and disciplinary measures taken against those responsible.

He has urged President Hichilema to demonstrate true Christian leadership by ensuring that citizens are allowed to worship freely without intimidation or interference from state agencies.

Esther Lungu  loses appeal to stop State from taking over K66 million flats

Esther Lungu loses appeal to stop State from taking over K66 million flats

THE Court of Appeal has ruled that forfeiture proceedings against former First Lady Esther Lungu  relating to the K66 million worth luxurious flats were properly commenced before the Economic and Financial Crimes Division (EFCC) of the High Court.

The judgment  delivered on Thursday addressed preliminary issues raised in Lungu’s appeal, dismissing four of her five grounds and upholding one on merit.

The second ground of appeal, which contended that proceedings were improperly commenced by originating notice of motion, was dismissed.

The court stated, “We actually did find that forfeiture proceedings, similar to the one at hand, were properly commenced by originating summons. We still stand by that position. Further, there is no need to prove that the property is tainted before an application is made under Section 29 of the Forfeiture of Proceeds of Crime Act. That fact should be proved by evidence during those proceedings.”

The third ground partially succeeded, leading to the expungement of certain bank statements used as evidence.

The court noted that the state had presented bank documents, including Lungu’s ZANACO account number and Ester Lungu Foundation Trust accounts at FNB, without testimony from a bank official, violating Section 5 of the Evidence (Bankers Book) Act.

“No bank official gave evidence to prove these documents as original and correct,” the judgment stated.

Other objections regarding affidavits and exhibits were rejected.

Orders 38 and 39 of the Rules of Supreme Court were deemed inapplicable, and statements by officials were allowed under Order 5 Rule 18 of the High Court Rules.

The ruling was delivered by a panel of judges, Chalwe Mchenga, Petronella Ngulube, and Yvonne Chembe, who concluded that only the third ground had merit, ordering the expungement of the specified exhibits.

All other grounds, including claims of being denied the right to be heard and constitutional references, were dismissed.

The court will now proceed to hear the main appeal application against the forfeited properties .

Campaigning from church is not wrong – Kings

RASPY voiced gospel singer Mumbi Chisenga popularly known as Kings Malembe Malembe says as he seeks public office next year, and will utilise church platforms to campaign.

Appearing on Power FM yesterday, Kings stated that there was nothing wrong with politicians sharing their vision with church members as long as their messsge was sober.

He argued that nowhere in the Bible does it say campaigning from church is a sin, adding that the practice is acceptable as long as church leaders approve of it.

The former “son of the house” further explained that the church was one of the most powerful platforms where one could interact with potential voters.

“For you to disseminate information, you go to where people are. The church is one of the places where people are, if people are in the bar then follow them and buy them some beer,” said Kings.

“If you say you are using the church, you want them to go to who. Church is where you find a lot of people. Most people who say you are using the church once used the church. Church is where sober people are and that’s where you can share your information.”

He explained that contrary to what is known out there, church goers were not the most vulnerable consumers of information.

“Spiritual people are not vulnerable, they will draw the line between the truth and the lies. It’s not wrong to campaign in church. What’s wrong to say is castigating your friends. But if you are given 10 minutes to talk and you are guided that’s fine,” stated Kings.

Malembe Malembe is Lupososhi member of parliament aspirant and the constituency has a population of over 79,000 people.

Judge Who Heard ECL Case Embroiled in Corruption Allegations Again

A High Court Judge, Aubrey Ledwaba who presided over a South African High Court case regarding the burial of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu has been accused of corruption again.

An explosive allegation was made at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry that a R2.5 million bribe was paid to secure bail for murder-accused Katiso “KT” Molefe, with some reports linking Acting Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba to the claims.

Ledwaba has since strongly denied receiving any money and has asked for an opportunity to present his side of the story to the commission.
He has been accused of corruption in previous instances.
Chief Justice of South Africa is Mandisa Maya has been forced to respond;

“This testimony, an allegation yet to be tested and proved at this stage, still has the potential of damaging the integrity of the Judiciary and we reiterate a plea which the Judiciary has issued on numerous previous occasions – that any person who has evidence of a Judge’s promptly lodge a complaint against that Judge with the Judicial Conduct misconduct must
Committee (JCC) of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).”

“The JSC is the constitutional
body with the lawful mandate to investigate any alleged misconduct by a Judge and, in terms of the provisions o he Judicial Service Commission Act 9 of 1994, recommend the
suspension of the Judge to the President who is the functionary with the power to suspend a Judge in terms of the Constitution.”

In April 2021, while being interviewed for a position on the Supreme Court of Appeal, Ledwaba was questioned by the Judicial Service Commission about his decision in 2019 to seal President Cyril Ramaphosa’s CR17 campaign bank records.

Ledwaba, then the Deputy Judge President, granted Ramaphosa’s request to keep the bank statements sealed from the public.

Former President Jacob Zuma and other critics suggested this decision helped hide alleged “bribes” and fostered a narrative of “judicial capture”.

In Zambia, a recording emerged of President Hakainde Hichilema’s associate, an expelled member of parliament for Mafinga Constituency in the north of the country,Robert Chabinga, who government has made and recognised as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and as Acting President of the largest opposition party in Zambia, was caught in a recording with a Cabinet Minister stating that he had traveled to South Africa to among other things, bribe the judges handling the matter regarding the disputed burial of Zambia’s Sixth President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

It is unkown if the lawyers for the Lungu family of the late President pursued the corruption allegations against Judge Ledwaba.

He ruled against the family twice.

We Are Not Free Anymore — But We Will Be Again- Thandiwe Ketiš Ngoma

We Are Not Free Anymore — But We Will Be Again

By Thandiwe Ketiš Ngoma

On the eve of our 61st Independence anniversary, my heart is heavy.

Tomorrow, we will raise our flag, but beneath its colors, our nation is bleeding. This was meant to be a time of celebration, a moment to honor the courage of those who fought to break the chains of colonial rule. Yet today, instead of pride, I feel sorrow, because in truth, we are right back where we started.

Only this time, the chains are not made of iron. They are made of power, fear, corruption, and silence.

We have leaders who behave like masters, and citizens who are treated like subjects. Our institutions no longer serve the people; they serve those in power. The same intimidation our forefathers faced under colonial administrators now comes from our own government, armed not with whips, but with laws, commissions, and regulations that muzzle truth and silence dissent.

Our media is being hunted.
Our journalists are being summoned.
Our voices are being tamed by fear.

We fought the empire, but now we have become our own colonisers. The oppression we once resisted has been repackaged in local accents and national colors.

So, as the flag rises tomorrow, I will stand in respect, but I will also bow my head in mourning, because sixty-one years later, Zambia is not truly free.

Independence was never meant to be a holiday; it was meant to be a promise, and that promise has been broken.

Yet even as I grieve, I do not despair, because the spirit of 1964 still burns within us. The courage of our ancestors still whispers in our hearts, reminding us that freedom is never granted; it is claimed.

We are ripe for our Second Independence Struggle, and this time it will not be a struggle of guns or blood, but of truth, courage, and conscience.

Come 2026, the people of Zambia must rise again, not in violence, but in unity, to reclaim our voice, to reclaim our dignity, and to reclaim the Republic our heroes envisioned.

The chains have changed, but the fight remains the same, and this time we will not stop until every Zambian is truly free.

LUBINDA DIRECTS PF AND TONSE ALLIANCE MEMBERS TO WEAR BLACK ON INDEPENDENCE DAY IN SOLIDARITY WITH DETAINED OPPOSITION LEADERS AND LATE FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU

PRESS STATEMENT
23 rd OCTOBER 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Desecration of democracy in Zambia .

From the office of Acting PF President/Tonse Chairman, Hon Given Lubinda

To Fellow Tonse Alliance Leaders,
Members of Central Committee,
PF MPs, Mayors, Council Chaipersons & Councilors,
PF Provincial Leadership,
PF District Leadership,
PF Constituency Officials,
PF ward and branch officials.

I Greet you all in the name of our Lord Jesus.
Allow me to remind you that “it’s darkest before dawn”.

As a Christian Nation, we serve a faithful God and hope is on the way for Zambia.

Tomorrow marks our 61st Independence Day of our Republic – a day our forefathers won to mark political liberation from British colonial rule on 24th October, 1964.

Sadly, modern  Zambia under the UPND government has witnessed rampant deterioration in terms of democracy and good governance since 2021. For the past four years, our cherished principles of separation of powers as well as rule of law are both politically compromised and practically damaged.

Under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema, it is now common knowledge that most of our PF leaders, members and those associated with PF are either in courts, incarcerated and  languishing in prisons and  their freedoms taken  away which our forefathers fought for. The latest incarceration of our PF and Tonse Alliance SG, Hon. Raphael Nakachinda is louder and visible for everyone to see.

Sad enough, tomorrow will be the first independence celebration for Zambia that shall be commemorated by our people without any living Former President following the death of Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu in South Africa on 5th June, 2025. This must make us both sorrowful and morally ashamed.

Make no mistake we are determined and shall continue to stand in solidarity with the Men and women whose freedoms have been taken away by the UPND administration.

We wish to therefore direct all members of the party and Tonse Alliance across the country that  tomorrow on  independence day as a sign of solidarity for our leaders and in memory of our freedom fighters, let us wear black,it can be a t-shirt,a suit, chitenge, scarf, what ever is black let us put on,  in solidarity of our gallant Men and Women languishing in prisons dotted around the country

This must also be done in Memory of our sixth Republican President Mr Edgar Chagws Lungu who we are yet to put to rest.

May God bless you all in anticipation for our 2026 Political Freedom

Hon. Given Lubinda

USA  lawmaker warns Zimbabwe against extending Mnangagwa’s term

A senior United States lawmaker warned Zimbabwe’s president against extending his rule beyond constitutional limits after the ruling party resolved to keep him in power until 2030.

Gregory Meeks, ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Washington was watching developments closely after ZANU-PF adopted a resolution Saturday to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term by two years.

The plan was endorsed Saturday at the movement’s annual conference in the eastern city of Mutare, where delegates instructed the government to begin drafting legislation to amend the Constitution, Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi told party delegates.

I’ll sing for any politician, just show me the money – Chester

I’ll sing for any politician, just show me the money – Chester

KNOWN for his catchy hits and energetic stage presence, popular Zambian musician Chester Morepower, real name, Moses Ng’andwe, has added his tenor voice to what critics say artistes are ‘sell outs’ when they sing for politicians.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/14NomteswNM/

Chester’s remarks follow the recent releases of Yo Maps’s campaign song for President Hakainde Hichilema, “Aleteka”, which brought the debate of is it right for artistes to utilise their skills for politicians.

Well, with bold confidence and no regrets, Chester asserted that he is not in the music business to play politics, but to put food on the table.

According to him, his loyalty lies not with political party colours, but with the colour for money presented.

He was speaking when he appeared on Joy FM yesterday.

“I’ll sing for any political party because kulaba ukunfwana (there is an agreement). It depends on how much they are paying and if they can manage, I’ll sing, if not then I won’t,” he stated.

Chester explained that musicians like anyone else, work for money and when a politician hires an artiste to perform, it’s simply a business deal, not a political statement.

“People need to understand that we don’t do it because we support one side or another. We do it to survive. The life of a musician is not easy, it’s not just about fame but about making a living,” Chester stressed.

He added that refusing offers from politicians could burn bridges and create unnecessary enemies in a tough industry where opportunities are already hard to come by.

Chester also took aim at fans and fellow artistes who judge musicians based on who they have worked with politically.

“Understand that today, someone can support Yo Maps and support Chile One tomorrow

It’s the same people because we all share the same fans. Even the politicians use the same people. What matters is how you convince them to support you,” Chester shared.

He said no artiste should be treated badly just because they once worked with a certain political party in the past and were against the current.

Chester noted that he is unapologetic about releasing a politically themed song in the past, stating he will do it again without shame, if the deal is right.

The musician is one of the masterminds behind the 2021 campaign song “Alebwelelapo,” which featured popular artistes like Rich Bizzy, Shenky, Kadaffi and late Dandy Crazy, for the Patriotic Front during election campaigns.

“I don’t regret doing a song for a politician. There are new artistes doing the same thing. That tells you it’s not wrong,” he said.

“Just because I sang for someone before doesn’t mean l have joined their side forever, let’s stop dividing people because we are all Zambians.”

Chester made it clear that if a political party brings a fair offer, he will be ready to hit the studio no matter who they are.

Low Voter Registration: What Does It Mean for 2026?

⬆️ ANALYSIS | Low Voter Registration: What Does It Mean for 2026?

Zambia stands at a crossroads once again. With less than a year to the 2026 general elections, the latest voter registration figures from the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) have raised serious political and democratic questions. The numbers are worryingly low. Lusaka Province, with millions of residents, has recorded fewer than 10,000 new voters. Muchinga stands at just under 4,000. Central Province has barely crossed the 5,000 mark. In a country of over 18 million people, these figures are not just technical, they are political.

To understand what this means, we must return to Zambia’s electoral history. The 1991 elections marked a political rebirth. Citizens, frustrated by the one-party rule of UNIP, registered in record numbers. The surge came from urban and industrial provinces: Lusaka, Copperbelt, and Southern. These new voters propelled Frederick Chiluba and the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) to power, ending Kenneth Kaunda’s long rule. The wave was both moral and generational, fuelled by the hunger for political freedom and economic change

Twenty years later, in 2011, another voter surge emerged. This time, frustration targeted the MMD government, accused of enriching elites while leaving the poor behind. Commodity prices were rising, unemployment deepened, and the slogan “more money in your pockets” became the battle cry of Michael Sata’s Patriotic Front. The urban working class, street vendors, and youth registered in large numbers. Their collective anger toppled a two-decade-old government.

Then came 2021, when new voters again altered Zambia’s political map. After years of corruption, political violence, and state capture, the electorate demanded sanity. Young voters, first-time registrants, and middle-class professionals came out in huge numbers, many voting not for policy, but for peace. They were tired of fear. They voted to end thuggery, abuse, and intimidation. The result was a landslide. Hakainde Hichilema’s victory was not only about promises, it was about restoration.

But now, the silence at registration centers tells a different story. The ECZ’s sluggish figures may not be purely administrative. They mirror a larger national sentiment: voter fatigue, political apathy, and disillusionment. When people believe their vote will not change much, they stop showing up. The 2021 voters, the most decisive in a generation still hold the balance of power. Many of them remain loyal to the UPND, not out of deep conviction, but because they see no credible alternative. For now, they are observing rather than mobilizing.

Yet, the low registration numbers also signal danger for the ruling party. In democracies, fatigue often precedes revolt. When people withdraw from civic participation, they create space for populism. That vacuum can be filled by movements like John Sangwa’s MNR or revived opposition figures looking to rebrand themselves as reformers. If rural areas record higher turnout than urban centers in 2026, the UPND may retain power through its countryside advantage, but it would be a victory without the enthusiasm that brought it to office in 2021.

Opposition parties see a different story. The Socialist Party’s leadership has called the current registration exercise “political sabotage.” Their argument is that the ECZ has failed to raise public awareness, provide adequate logistics, or ensure fair access. While that may sound like political rhetoric, the figures give their claim some weight. A national voter registration drive producing fewer than 10,000 new voters in Lusaka is not a mere oversight, it reflects either poor planning or weak political will.

The implications are profound. Without a broad voter refresh, 2026 risks becoming a contest fought on the same old voter roll, a roll that favours incumbency. The 2021 vote was largely urban and youth-driven. Unless the current apathy is reversed, rural voters may once again dominate the numbers. This could cement UPND’s control.

In short, low voter registration is not a sign of stability, it is a warning light. It shows that democracy is breathing, but not running. Unless the ECZ restores public confidence, and unless the opposition provides a compelling alternative, Zambia risks walking into 2026 not as a vibrant democracy, but as a fatigued one.

HH ORDERS PROBE INTO CANCELLATION OF PRAYER NIGHT BY POLICE

STATE HOUSE DISPELS CLAIMS PRESIDENT HICHILEMA BANNED APOSTLE SUNDAY SINYANGWE’S “STANDING IN THE GAP” OVERNIGHT PRAYER

Details in the statement 

We have received reports that the Zambia Police stopped hundreds of Christian worshippers, led by Apostle Sunday Sinyangwe and his Nigerian counterpart, from holding an overnight vigil at the OYDPC, allegedly acting on instructions from the Head of State.

We wish to categorically state that His Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema, issued no such directive. The President would never prevent Christians or any faith group from holding prayers, especially during this sacred period marking the 61st Independence Anniversary of our nation, or indeed any other period.

The President deeply regrets the incident and has directed an immediate investigation to establish the facts and ensure accountability

President Hichilema is a devout Christian who holds his faith with utmost sincerity and respect. He reaffirms his Government’s unwavering commitment to freedom of worship and peaceful coexistence among all Zambians.

The President calls on all Christians and people of faith not to be distracted, but to continue praying for the country’s peace, unity, and prosperity.

Zambia remains a nation of faith, anchored in love, mutual respect, and the enduring spirit of “One Zambia, One Nation.”

Apostle Sunday Sinyangwe  is a PF Cadre- Apostle Enock Chinyama

Reflection by Apostle Enock Chinyama

When I heard that the police had stopped Apostle Sunday Sinyangwe’s overnight prayer last night, I was not shocked.

It simply reminded me that men of God should not align themselves directly with political parties — as Sinyangwe has done with the PF. Servants of God must remain neutral and devoted to the Kingdom, not to political systems.

If you are attacked or opposed while standing neutral, take heart — it is the work of God refining your calling.

Interestingly, while Sinyangwe’s vigil was stopped, Prophet Joshua Iginla from Nigeria was holding his service peacefully at Woodlands Stadium. This should open our eyes.

Let the church in Zambia awaken and separate itself from political garments. Today you may be in good terms with the current government, but that may not always be the case tomorrow. Our loyalty must remain to God alone.

Cops corner PF cadre who’s been on a 10-year run for murder

Cops corner PF cadre who’s been on a 10-year run for murder

AFTER a decade of evading justice, PF cadre Barnabas Kaoma, said to be part of a violent gang that murdered a UPND official in 2015 has finally been arrested and charged with murder.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1PzbaWKFAe/

Kaoma, who has been on the police wanted list for 10 years is believed to have been part of a notorious gang of PF cadres that attacked and killed Grayzer Matapa, who served as UPND Munali Constituency chairperson.

The incident, which took place in February 2015, remains one of the darkest episodes of politically motivated violence in Lusaka’s Mtendere Township.

According to eyewitnesses at the time, Matapa was cornered by a group of PF cadres armed with knives, screwdrivers and other sharp objects.

He was brutally stabbed multiple times and left for dead on the roadside.

His killing was widely condemned by human rights defenders and political observers who described it as a barbaric act of political intolerance.

Despite several arrests made in connection with the murder back then, Kaoma managed to disappear and fled, trying to evade capture.

Police sources have told Kalemba that Kaoma was recently tracked down and taken into custody and has since been charged with murder.

During the funeral procession, President Hakainde Hichilema joined mourners as opposition leader at the time, to pay his last respects.

The solemn farewell however, quickly turned violent after heavily armed police officers disrupted the procession, allegedly because the coffin was not being transported in a vehicle.

When the mourners refused to abandon their traditional walk to the cemetery, police fired tear gas into the crowd.

In the confusion that followed, the coffin carrying Matapa’s body was damaged beyond repair.

ON THE CONSTITUTIONALITY OF EMOLUMENTS FOR THE TECHNICAL COMMITTEE ON CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT

ON THE CONSTITUTIONALITY OF EMOLUMENTS FOR THE TECHNICAL COMMITTEE ON CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT

PUBLIC STATEMENT

It has come to my attention that the Technical Committee appointed to guide the ongoing constitutional amendment process may have commenced its work without the prior determination of its emoluments by the Emoluments Commission, as required under Article 232 of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 2 of 2016.

Article 232 of the Constitution is explicit — the Emoluments Commission is the only body mandated to determine, upon recommendation by the relevant authority, the emoluments for public officers and members of commissions appointed under the Constitution.

At present, however, the Emoluments Commission is not fully operational:

• Two members of the Commission are out of the country seeking medical attention;

• One member was removed and has not yet been replaced; and

• The Secretariat, which is responsible for facilitating meetings of the Commission, is out of station on official duty.

Given this situation, the Commission cannot form a quorum to transact business or make any valid determination of emoluments. Therefore, no lawful decision could have been made concerning the remuneration or allowances of the Technical Committee on the Constitution.

If the Committee has nonetheless been allocated or is receiving emoluments, then such action would amount to a violation of Article 232 of the Constitution, and therefore constitute an illegal and unconstitutional act.

This would mark the first time in Zambia’s constitutional history that a constitution-making body has been appointed and operationalized without prior determination by the Emoluments Commission, thereby undermining the integrity, transparency, and legality of the process.

Accordingly, I call upon the Secretary to the Cabinet and the relevant authorities to urgently clarify the following matters in the interest of constitutional accountability and public trust:

1. Has the Emoluments Commission formally met and approved emoluments for the Technical Committee on the Constitution?

2. Was a recommendation submitted to the Commission by the appointing authority in accordance with Article 232?

3. If not, under what authority were the emoluments for members of the Technical Committee determined and disbursed?

4. Has the Commission, as currently constituted, been able to form a quorum to transact such business?

The Constitution belongs to the people of Zambia. Any process that seeks to amend it must strictly adhere to the principles of legality, transparency, and constitutionalism.

I therefore urge the Secretary to the Cabinet to publicly clarify whether the Emoluments Commission was duly consulted and whether Article 232 of the Constitution has been complied with in the establishment and operation of the current Technical Committee on Constitutional Amendment.

HH UNDETERRED – MWEETWA

HH UNDETERRED – MWEETWA

GOVERNING United Party for National Development (UPND) chairperson for information and publicity Cornelius Mweetwa says President Hakainde Hichilema remains undeterred in building a better future for the people of Zambia.

He said the President is focused despite criticism from opposition leaders, many of whom, he says, are the same individuals who left the economy broken through corruption and reckless borrowing.

Mr Mweetwa, who is Minister of Information and Media, said President Hichilema and his administration is working tirelessly to boost local agriculture, bring down food prices, create more jobs, and grow the economy to put money in people’s pockets.

“We know that citizens are still experiencing challenges. We know the cost of living is hitting hard, and the historic drought has caused load-shedding, which disrupts lives and businesses. These challenges test us, but they won’t defeat us. We see the struggle, we feel your frustration, and we are taking action,” he said.

In a statement, Mr Mweetwa said the New Dawn administration is implementing an ambitious and unparalleled economic transformation agenda.

He added that the Government remains committed to driving reforms and development that will uplift the lives of all Zambians.

if Netanyahu f**ks up the Gaza deal, Donald Trump will f**k him.”- US official

US President Donald Trump will “f**k” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if the Israeli leader jeopardizes the Gaza ceasefire deal, a US official said, according to a Channel 12 report.

Correspondent Barak Ravid, speaking in Hebrew on the network, says that a US official told him, “Netanyahu is walking a fine line with President Trump. If he keeps going, he’ll f**k up the Gaza deal. And if Netanyahu f**ks up the deal, Donald Trump will f**k him.”

The remark reflects growing frustration in Washington with recent political moves in Israel, particularly the Knesset’s vote yesterday to advance a bill to annex parts of the West Bank, which reportedly stunned US officials.

The source told Ravid that’ll US Vice President JD Vance, who was visiting Israel at the time, was shocked by the decision and believes that Israel is acting in an “unsupervised” manner. Netanyahu updated Vance about the Knesset vote during the vice president’s visit, assuring him that it was merely a “preliminary vote” and would “go nowhere,” the public broadcaster Kan reported.

Vance responded, “This cannot happen while I am visiting here.”

According to the Channel 12 report, Netanyahu had been warned by American officials that the vote could provoke a backlash and destabilize ongoing negotiations with Hamas.

Your baby bump may be fueling infections – Dr Mujajati

Your baby bump may be fueling infections – Dr Mujajati

PREGNANCY is often described as one of the most beautiful and transformative periods in a woman’s life, but according to Dr Aaron Mujajati, expectant mothers should also be aware of an often-overlooked health threat, the Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).

“Your baby bump may be fueling infections and not many women know this,” warned Dr Mujajati, highlighting how the physical and hormonal changes that support pregnancy also increase vulnerability to UTIs, especially between the 6th and 24th weeks.

He explained that as the uterus grows, it puts pressure on the bladder and the ureter (the tube that carry urine from the kidneys), which can slow the flow of urine.

At the same time he said, pregnancy hormones relax muscles in the urinary tract, making it easier for bacteria to multiply and harder for the body to flush them out.

“This combination of slowed urine flow and relaxed muscles creates the perfect environment for bacterial infections,” Dr Mujajati said.

According to him, UTIs during pregnancy aren’t just uncomfortable but can be dangerous if left untreated.

Infections that begin in the bladder can travel to the kidneys, potentially leading to fever, back pain, and in severe cases, complications for both mother and baby.

“Some women don’t even have symptoms which is why we routinely screen for UTIs during prenatal visits. It’s about early detection because prevention and prompt treatment are key,” Dr Mujajati said.

He stated that UTIs in pregnancy can often be prevented through simple but effective lifestyle habits, such as staying well-hydrated, urinating regularly and completely especially before and after sex, maintaining proper hygiene by wiping front  to back and wearing loose, breathable cotton underwear to reduce moisture buildup.

“Something as simple as drinking enough water and not holding your urine can go a long way,” he said.

Dr Mujajati advised pregnant women to watch out for signs of a UTI, such as burning or pain during urination, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, frequent urges to urinate with little output, and lower abdominal discomfort.

He emphasised that early treatment with pregnancy-safe antibiotics is usually effective and prevents further complications.

“Understanding the risks and being proactive can help ensure a safer pregnancy for both mother and child,” added Dr Mujajati.

UNZALARU THREATENS TO BLOCK NEW STUDENTS OVER UNZA’S K1.3 BILLION DEBT CRISIS

UNZALARU THREATENS TO BLOCK NEW STUDENTS OVER UNZA’S K1.3 BILLION DEBT CRISIS

THE University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union has threatened to block the admission of new students for the next academic year unless the government urgently resolves the university’s persistent financial and governance challenges and settles a staggering K1.3 billion debt owed to staff.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka, UNZALARU President Andrew Phiri said the union’s demands, which include the full settlement of terminal benefits and timely payment of salaries, must be met by December 31, 2025.

The University of Zambia currently owes both serving and retired employees approximately K1.3 billion in terminal benefits alone, comprising K532 million under ZSIC superannuation and K773 million in gratuities and pensions, with some arrears dating back to April 2016.

Mr. Phiri expressed deep concern over the university’s failure to make timely salary payments, clear accrued personnel emoluments, and remit statutory contributions to NAPSA and NHIMA. He attributed the long-standing crisis primarily to inadequate government funding for an institution of UNZA’s size and national importance, which has also negatively impacted infrastructure development and maintenance.

He noted that office space, lecture theatres, laboratories, and student accommodation remain insufficient and in a deplorable state.

Despite these issues, UNZALARU commended the government for increasing the 2026 national budget allocation to UNZA from K233.7 million to K308.5 million and allocating K150 million to the university education budget for personnel emoluments.

The union is urging the Ministry of Finance and National Planning and the Ministry of Education to act decisively. Beyond the debt settlement and timely payments, UNZALARU also demanded a substantial increase in the university’s grant, timely release of monthly grants, and the immediate suspension of the newly established “top heavy” UNZA organisational structure.

Zambia-Mozambique Plan Joint Power Project to Boost Regional Energy Security

⬆️ REGIONAL | Zambia-Mozambique Plan Joint Power Project to Boost Regional Energy Security

Zambia and Mozambique are exploring a joint electricity generation venture in Mozambique’s Tete Province, signaling a deepening of regional energy cooperation.

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo announced that his country’s Ministry of Energy will next month host its Zambian counterparts to assess joint investment prospects in the proposed Mphanda Nkuwa Dam on the Zambezi River.

The hydro project is projected to generate 1,500 megawatts of electricity, strengthening regional supply networks and supporting Zambia’s post-drought recovery.

“We are looking at ways to collaborate on power generation projects that will benefit both countries,” President Chapo said during a bilateral meeting with President Hakainde Hichilema at State House in Lusaka.

He added that Mozambique is also developing gas-fired power plants in Tete Province that could be opened to joint ventures.

Tete already houses the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Dam, one of southern Africa’s largest energy assets, which currently exports power across the region.

President Hichilema welcomed the initiative and emphasized the need to expedite the development of the Nacala and Beira transport corridors. He said improved regional infrastructure, including rail, roads, and oil pipelines, would reduce trade bottlenecks and integrate regional markets.

The Zambian leader also thanked Mozambique for supplying emergency power during Zambia’s drought-induced shortages earlier this year, saying the support helped cushion the country’s economy.

“We must safeguard our shared natural resources, including the Zambezi River, for the prosperity of our region,” President Hichilema said.

President Chapo arrived in Lusaka on Wednesday night and is scheduled to serve as the Guest of Honour at Zambia’s 61st Independence celebrations on Friday.

CAMEROON OPPOSITION LEADER TCHIROMA CALLS FOR PROTESTS IF PAUL BIYA IS DECLARED WINNER

CAMEROON OPPOSITION LEADER TCHIROMA CALLS FOR PROTESTS IF PAUL BIYA IS DECLARED WINNER

By: DW Africa

Cameroon’s Constitutional Council has postponed the announcement of the 2025 presidential election results to Monday, October 27, instead of the initially scheduled October 23.

The delay comes amid growing political tension and claims by opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary that he, not longtime leader Paul Biya, won the vote.

Earlier this week, the country’s electoral body dismissed eight petitions challenging the polls, citing a lack of sufficient evidence and jurisdiction to nullify the results.

Tchiroma has since urged Cameroonians to take to the streets in protest if what he described as “falsified and distorted results” are declared in Biya’s
favor.

A Peruvian bishop named Ciro Quispe López has quit his post after a big scandal involving secret affairs and money misuse. The Vatican looked into the case after serious complaints. The issue has shocked many in Peru and raised questions about power and trust inside the Church.

A Peruvian bishop, Ciro Quispe López, 51, has resigned after being accused of having 17 secret mistresses. López was the bishop of Juli in Peru, a respected position in the Catholic Church. His resignation came after a Vatican investigation revealed the women nearly fought each other when they found out about his affairs.

Paola Ugaz, a Peruvian journalist, said in an interview with The Times, “A nun who was one of Quispe’s lovers was jealous of a lawyer the bishop was also seeing and sent information about his affairs to a third lover who got into a fight with the lawyer.”

Ugaz added, “It was a real soap opera but also lifted the lid on a serious abuse of power. Many of the 17 women were too scared to come forward because they were frightened of him”, as mentioned in the report by DailyMail.

Messi signs new Inter Miami contract

0

Lionel Messi has signed a contract extension with Inter Miami that will keep him in Major League Soccer until the end of the 2028 season, the club announced on Thursday, October 23.

In a video posted on Inter Miami’s X account, Messi was seen signing the new deal while seated at a table inside the under-construction Miami Freedom Park stadium, accompanied by the caption: “He’s Home.”

“It makes me really happy to stay here and to continue with this project that, besides being a dream, has become a beautiful reality, playing in this stadium, at Miami Freedom Park,” Messi, 38, said in a club statement. “Since I arrived in Miami, I’ve been very happy, so I’m truly glad to keep going here.”

Club co-owner David Beckham described Messi’s extension as a testament to his “commitment to the city, to the club, to the game.” He said, “He’s still as committed as he’s ever been and he still wants to win. As owners to have a player that loves the game as much as he does, and who has done as much for the game in this country and to inspire the next generation of young talent as he has, we feel very lucky.”

Messi’s previous contract was due to expire at the end of the 2025 MLS season, and a renewal had long been expected after club sources confirmed last month that an agreement was in place.

The new deal ensures Messi will continue playing well beyond the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament kicks off on June 11 and concludes with the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.

Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 following a brief and difficult spell at Paris Saint-Germain. Before that, he spent nearly two decades at Barcelona, where he won 10 La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies after coming through the club’s youth academy.

With Argentina, Messi has scored 114 international goals and won the World Cup in 2022, along with Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner could make history by playing in a sixth World Cup, potentially alongside long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo. He is also just three goals shy of Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 career World Cup goals.

Messi led Argentina to the top of the South American qualifiers for next year’s finals, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals.

In Major League Soccer, Messi’s impact has been transformative. He was named the league’s Most Valuable Player for 2024 despite Inter Miami’s playoff exit, and in 2025, he became the fastest player in MLS history to reach 40 goals.

This season, he guided Miami to a third-place finish in the Eastern Conference, capping the regular season with a hat-trick in a 5–2 win over Nashville SC to claim the MLS Golden Boot with 29 goals in 28 matches.

I never supported my daughter marrying Ned Nwoko – Regina Daneils Mom

The drama between Ned Nkwoko and his youngest wife continues to unfold after an alleged abuse.

An old interview of Regina Daniels’ mom has surfaced on the internet once again, hours after her daughter, in a circulating video, said she was no longer happy in the marriage because her billionaire husband laid his hands on her several times.

When the 59-year-old senator married 18-year-old Nigerian actress, Regina Daniels, it generated conversations, and the one thing that trended the most was that her mother pushed her into the marriage for generational wealth.

Recently, the actress was outside her matrimonial residence in her pajamas, claiming that her husband abused her.

The husband debunked this statement and said she has been abusing drugs in their house for months now, and anytime she overuses, she reacts weirdly.

After their marriage in 2019, her mother granted an interview with BBC Africa to clarify so many things she had heard about her daughter’s marriage to a man old enough to be her father and her involvement in persuading her daughter to marry him quickly.

Her mother revealed that she was the last person to know that her daughter was in a relationship with the Billionaire, and Regina started talking back at her when she tried to question her choice.

She decided to shield her daughter as every good mother would do.

The mother revealed that Ned Nwoko married her daughter before revealing his political side to the family, so she didn’t push her daughter for wealth.Family games

In March 2025, she came out that if anyhting happened to her daughter, Nigeria should hold Ned accountable.

Wife discovers mistress’ message telling ‘stingy’ hubby to increase payment per round

Wife discovers mistress’ message telling ‘stingy’ hubby to increase payment per round

A LUSAKA man, that can be easily identified as a successful economist in his nine-year-old marriage due to his short hands in giving, has instead been discovered to be a Father Christmas outside his home sharing more than just cash but his serial impregnating machine.

However, his run to imitate the flashing of cash like Nigerian billionaire Ned Nwoko to his side chicks has been spoiled by a message from his side chick who was requesting for him to increase the amount he spent on her per round of entering her cave of sweetness.

The message landed in the hands and sight of devoted pregnant wife, 30-year-old Rabecca Maela, a beauty therapist from Matero East, who had had the phone of her 40-year-old husband, Elisha Silungwe.

According to Maela, she found messages from a female contact saved in her husband’s phone, boldly demanding that Silungwe should stop showing up with pocket change and start paying K300 per round, or risk never seeing the mistress again.

Maela lamented that her husband seems to hold a PhD in chasing anything in a skirt, with zero regard for age, dignity or commitment.

“ Four days ago, I found a text from a lady and responded pretending to be my husband. The lady started complaining that he only calls her whenever he wants some good sex and started asking if he has a k300 for per round. She then added that whenever they meet, he goes with less money,” Maela revealed.

“But whenever it’s time to pay bills, my husband doesn’t pay on time. The only thing he is good at is buying relish and mealie-meal because he loves nshima.”

She also revealed that Silungwe has never supported her financially, not even a coin for her hair or lotion and now, despite being heavily pregnant and facing complications, he still shows no sign of concern.

“This man once tried to rape my young sister when I went for work. Am tired of this marriage, I would rather be pregnant and happy than staying with someone and end up regretting it.”

These reasons, however, were the final nail in the coffin for Maela, who told the Matero Local Court that she has had enough and is now ready to close this chapter and move on with her life.

In his defense, Silungwe flatly dismissed accusations of infidelity brought against him, refusing to accept the ending of the marriage.

“My wife is just short-tempered and she likes proving me wrong in most cases. And as for those messages, I don’t even know that girl she was chatting with.”

And in his ruling, senior magistrate Lewis Mumba noted that Maela’s emotions were high, and reminded both the couple of the true essence of marriage.

“I understand you are pregnant and maybe that’s why you seem emotional. Marriage is a union that should bring happiness, not misery. I am not concluding this matter today. I will give you a few days to attempt reconciliation. However, if nothing changes, I shall grant you a divorce,” he stated.

The matter was adjourned, and judgment was reserved for October 31, 2025.

Kabwira said, one of the agendas of the meeting was to understand where things went wrong for them not to win the election.

She also noted that lack of voter protection to fully protect MCP votes during the election played a part for them to lose the election.

“As a party we are disappointed that we are now in opposition, that’s why we are doing a post-election postmortem analysis to understand where things went wrong and how we can bounce back into Government in 2030” Said Kabwila.

WHO TO REVISE AZITHROMYCIN GUIDELINES AMID RISING ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE CONCERNS IN AFRICA

WHO TO REVISE AZITHROMYCIN GUIDELINES AMID RISING ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE CONCERNS IN AFRICA

By: MBC Digital

World Health Organization (WHO) says it plans to revise its guidelines on the mass distribution of the antibiotic azithromycin in Africa after new research showed limited benefits from treating only infants and raised concerns about growing antibiotic resistance.

Azithromycin is commonly used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, strep throat, ear and intestinal infections.

Earlier trials, including one in Malawi (MORDOR trial), showed that giving all children under five two doses of azithromycin yearly reduced child deaths by 13.5 percent.

However, a new study found no significant impact when only babies were treated.

WHO says the new recommendations, expected next year, will aim to balance saving lives and preventing drug resistance.

This comes as WHO recently warned that antimicrobial resistance is on the rise globally, driven by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in humans and
animals.

American OF Content Creator,Rubi Rose, says she can’t fathom why she has no man with her hot body

There are men chasing women every day to start life with them, but American OF content creator, Rubi Rose, is not one of those women.

The beautiful lady is surprised by how men are not chasing her at the age of 28 when she thinks she is in her prime.

On her Snapchat story, she posted a video one morning without makeup, and she looked amazing as she recorded herself, but noticed there was no man in her life.

She has many EXes, but the reasons why they all fell out are unknown to date.

Since 2014, she has been involved in romantic relationships with at least 10 celebrities.

  • Playboi Carti (2014–2017)
  • Ian Connor (2015)
  • Jacob York (2015–2016)
  • 21 Savage (2016)
  • Soulja Boy (2016)
  • Lil Yachty (2016–2017)
  • Lil Tjay (2020)
  • DDG (2020–2021)
  • Lil Baby: She revealed in an interview that she hooked up with rapper Lil Baby.
  • French Montana (2023)
  • Druski (2024)

Druski recently stated in an interview that she couldn’t afford Rubi because of her expensive taste, and now he has learned his lesson and will prepare before getting into a relationship with someone of that caliber.

The reactions her post generated suggest that she has been involved with too many men, and that’s unhealthy for her body. And also her type of content is a huge factor to consider because it is not always about looks, decency counts.

White farmer jailed for murder in South Africa complains about being in prison with black inmates

One of the men implicated in the brutal murder of two women who were shot and then fed to pigs on a Limpopo farm has complained about life behind bars, saying he is struggling because he is imprisoned with black inmates.

In letters written to his family and friends, Adrian Rudolph De Wet described his time in prison as unbearable and claimed that he faces threats of rape and death from other inmates. “Sometimes I wish I could not wake up. My life in prison is not easy because I am mainly the only white person in the prison, with other thousands of black inmates. There is one guy who is my friend here; he protects me from inmates who try to r@pe me or murd3r me,” he wrote.

The letters were read aloud at the Polokwane High Court, where De Wet’s employer, pig farmer Zacharia Olivier, is currently on trial alongside another farmworker, William Musora, a Zimbabwean national. The three men were arrested and charged with multiple offences, including murder and attempted murder, following the deaths of Maria Makgato and Lucadia Ndlovu, who were reportedly scavenging for expired food meant for Olivier’s pigs when they were shot and thrown into a pigsty.

De Wet later turned state witness against his former boss and colleague. During Wednesday’s court session, Olivier’s lawyer, Jacobus Venter, presented De Wet’s letters and used them to question his credibility and motives.

However, prosecutors objected to selective quoting from the correspondence, prompting the judge to rule that the letters be read in full to provide complete context. One of the most striking passages revealed remorse from De Wet over his actions. “There are people who want to see me dead in this prison. I wish we had listened to your advice. You warned us to stop shooting at the people who come to steal at the farm, but we never listened,” he wrote.

The disturbing revelations in court added new layers to a case that has shocked South Africans with its brutality.

“I haven’t had s£x in over three years,” Khloé, 40, then confessed, to which Huck replied, “This gummy is perfect for you.”

He couldn’t hide his shock at her confession, though, as he pressed for details.”You’re really not dating anyone, Khlo? There’s no one on your roster?”

“Nope,” she said, and then he asked if there was anyone she’s “DMing,” which she also denied.

“No. Not anyone I’m texting. I don’t have any person’s phone number,” Khloe said.

Khloe’s best friend Malika Haqq noted that Huck was in “disbelief” at the revelation, especially when Khloé said, “I don’t even have nud£s.”

In a confessional, producers asked Kourtney, 46, what she thought about Khloé opting to stay single.

“I think while you have young kids, if there’s no one worth your time, focus on your kids,” Kourtney said, approving of her sister’s decision.

Kim, on the other hand, tried to get Khloé out there, producers noted, to which Kourtney said, “No, f** that.”

Khloé has been open about her desire to stay single while her kids — daughter True, 7, and son Tatum, 3, who she shares with ex Tristan Thompson — are young.

“My kids are…my top priority,” she said during a January episode of her podcast, Khloé in Wonder Land. “And I don’t care about dating. I don’t know what will happen in a couple years or next year, I don’t know, but I’m not dating. I don’t care to.”

“My focus is on just my kids,” she continued. “To me, I think it’s the smartest thing.”

She and Thompson dated on and off from 2016 to 2021, and, prior to that, she was married to Lamar Odom from 2009 to 2016. The Good American founder has not been linked to anyone romantically since her split from Thompson.

Kanye West Warns Kim Kardashian To Stop Allowing Tiktok And Disney From Using North West

Award-winning rapper Kanye West has called out his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, for allowing their daughter to be on social media, moving like an adult.

This comes after North West, their 12-year-old daughter, has been constantly dressing like an adult with heavy chains, piercings, and temporary tattoos on her body.

Her new lifestyle makes her look like a woman, which she is not, making Kanye West angry.
He has come to warn the mother of his kids to stop antagonizing his commands because even though Kim has custody, their children are his, too.

Kanye and Kim were together from 2014 to 2022, and they had 4 children together. The children are North West(born June 2013), Saint West(born December 2015), Chicago West (born January 2018), and Psalm West (born May 2019).

Their union ended in 2022 after Kim filed for divorce, citing that West has so many unpredictable behaviors and he has Bipolar disorder, which causes him to act weirdly sometimes, and also his opinions on certain matters in the mainstream affect her.

After the divorce, Kim, having custody of the kids, has been allowing their first child to expose her body on social media with indecent dressing, with mini skirts, chains, and temporary tattoos.

Her recent appearance caused a heavy backlash for Kim for her poor parenting, and now Kanye has called her out for allowing all this to happen.

West has a say in the upbringing of their 4 children because he pays $200,000 as child support and bears 50% costs of their security, education, and medical bills.

The Rapper warned Kim to stop opposing every decision to protect their children and, most especially, stop giving TikTok and Disney because the exposure will ruin their peace of mind and force them to grow.

Kanye West also said he has been enduring the bad attitude of his ex-wife for a long while they were together, but anytime he spoke out, people considered him a crybaby.

Trump pardons founder of Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange

US President, Donald Trump has pardoned Changpeng Zhao, the co-founder of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, who previously pleaded guilty to a money laundering charge in 2023. Two sources familiar with the matter confirmed the decision.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt issued a statement asserting that Trump “exercised his constitutional authority by issuing a pardon for Mr. Zhao, who was prosecuted by the Biden Administration in their war on cryptocurrency.”

The statement further argued that the Biden administration’s sentencing of Zhao—who goes by the initials CZ—was excessively harsh, a view shared by the President and his top advisers following Binance’s months-long lobbying campaign for the pardon.

The pardon, which was first reported by The Wall Street Journal, could potentially allow Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, to operate in the U.S. once again.

Zhao was sentenced to four months in prison in May 2024 after pleading guilty to charges that he failed to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program. As part of a coordinated settlement with the federal government in 2023, Zhao stepped down as CEO of the exchange he founded in 2017 and agreed to pay $200 million in fines.

Binance itself agreed to pay more than $4 billion in fines and other penalties, admitting to engaging in anti-money laundering activities, unlicensed money transmitting, and sanctions violations.

Three prisoners arrested for threatening to kill former French President Sarkozy

Three inmates at Paris’s La Santé Prison have been arrested for allegedly making death threats against former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for corruption and money laundering linked to the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

The arrests followed the emergence of a video on social media showing prisoners shouting threats at Sarkozy.

“Three inmates at the Santé prison were taken into custody following threats being made upon the arrival of Nicolas Sarkozy,” a Paris prosecutor’s office spokesman confirmed on Thursday.

“An administrative search was carried out of their cells by the prison administration, during which two phones were seized,” the spokesman added, noting that a formal investigation had been opened into “death threats.”

The video captured one inmate shouting, “We know everything, Sarko… we know everything. Give back the billions of dollars.”

Following the incident, two police officers from the VIP Protection Service (SDLP) were assigned to the cell next to Sarkozy’s, where they will be stationed 24 hours a day to ensure his safety. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reportedly ordered the protective measure after the threats circulated online.

The threats, which quickly spread on social media, drew public outrage. Far-right politician Marine Le Pen commented on the situation, writing, “I have no doubt that some must be delighted by this situation. But I want to believe that millions of French people feel, like me, disgust.”

Sarkozy, 70, was incarcerated on Tuesday after his conviction for conspiring to accept illegal cash from Gaddafi to fund his 2007 presidential campaign. He is the first French head of state to serve prison time since Marshal Philippe Pétain, the World War II-era leader convicted of collaborating with the Nazis.

According to prison officials, Sarkozy is being held in solitary confinement in a 29-square-foot cell equipped with a bed, desk, shower, and TV. He reportedly spends most of his time alone and is allowed one solitary walk a day.

His wife, Carla Bruni, has already visited him in prison. Lawyers described Sarkozy’s nights as “frightening,” and his legal team has appealed the court’s decision to imprison him.

Sarkozy’s lawyer, Christophe Ingrain, said,

“He is taking it upon himself to ensure that no one can feel the indignation and anger he feels at suffering this injustice. Humanly, this is an extremely difficult ordeal.”

Sarkozy has also been convicted in two previous corruption cases, one involving attempted bribery of a judge and another tied to illicit campaign financing, and faces additional criminal inquiries.

Meanwhile, Carla Bruni is under investigation for her alleged role in “Operation Save Sarko,” a £4 million scheme aimed at preventing her husband’s imprisonment. She faces charges of witness tampering in an organized gang, which carry a potential 10-year prison sentence. Both she and Sarkozy deny any wrongdoing.

Oil Prices surge 5% following fresh US sanctions against major Russian energy companies Rosneft and Lukoil

Oil prices rose by 5% on Thursday, October 23 after the U.S. imposed sanctions on major Russian energy companies Rosneft and Lukoil over the war in Ukraine, extending gains from the previous session.

Brent crude futures were up $3.39, or 5.4%, at $65.98 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were up $3.31, or 5.7%, at $61.81. The futures had initially jumped by more than $2 a barrel immediately after the U.S. sanctions were unveiled, also gaining support from a surprise decline in U.S. crude stockpiles.

The U.S. sanctions mean that refiners in China and India, which are major buyers of Russian oil, will need to seek alternative suppliers to avoid exclusion from the Western banking system, according to Saxo Bank analyst Ole Hansen.

The impact of the sanctions on oil markets will heavily depend on the reaction from India and whether Russia can quickly find alternative buyers, noted UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo. India became the largest buyer of discounted seaborne Russian crude following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Industry sources indicated on Thursday that Indian refiners are likely to sharply curtail imports of Russian oil due to the new measures. Privately-owned Reliance Industries, the top Indian purchaser of Russian crude, reportedly plans to reduce or halt such imports entirely.

The U.S. said it was prepared to take further action as it called on Moscow to agree immediately to a ceasefire in Ukraine. This follows the United Kingdom’s sanctioning of Rosneft and Lukoil last week, and the EU’s approval of a 19th package of sanctions that includes a ban on imports of Russian LNG.

Despite the immediate price jump, some market scepticism remains over whether the U.S. sanctions will fundamentally shift the balance of supply and demand. Rystad Energy analyst Claudio Galimberti pointed out that almost all sanctions against Russia over the past three and a half years have largely failed to reduce the volumes produced by the country or its oil revenues.

Furthermore, oversupply concerns following recent OPEC+ production increases capped crude’s gains on Thursday, with UBS expecting Brent to remain between the $60 and $70 range.

On the demand side, U.S. crude oil, gasoline, and distillate inventories fell last week as refining activity and demand strengthened, the Energy Information Administration confirmed on Wednesday.
