Kudos to President Hichilema and the family of late former president Edgar Lungu- Sishuwa Sishuwa

Kudos to President Hichilema and the family of late former president Edgar Lungu

By Sishuwa Sishuwa

I am delighted that the family of late former president of Zambia Edgar Lungu and representatives of President Hakainde Hichilema have ironed out their outstanding differences and struck an agreement on the transportation of his remains from South Africa to Zambia next Wednesday, on his funeral programme, and on the date of burial – 23 June.

I particularly commend former first lady Esther Lungu, family spokesperson Makebi Zulu, and former minister of mines Richard Musukwa for their decisive role in securing this desirable outcome.

I further commend President Hichilema for finally stepping up to provide the required leadership on this critically important matter; Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa for his exemplary dedication, professionalism and conduct throughout the difficult negotiations; and Northmead Assembly of God Church Bishop Joshua Banda for what he did yesterday!

Oh, how invisible the works of some people among us! Their real honour comes by way of knowledge of the truth, the whole story that they know and with an inner smile, they narrate it fully to no other but their conscience.

One day, the full account of the behind-the-scenes story that produced this extraordinary conclusion shall be told. When that happens, we may come to learn that what we know about people is only what we think we know about them.

It is rarely the truth. If we knew the truth, our relationship with them would dramatically be different.

My fervent prayer is that all parties in this matter will hold to their agreements and the guarantees they have given each other for the betterment of Zambia.

HH hails Malawi’s former President Bakili Muluzi for breaking impasse on Lungu’s funeral

After a battle between the Zambian government and the family of the late former president Edgar Lungu, the burial date has finally been set.

Durung negotiations facilitated by Malawi’s former President, His Excellency Dr Bakili muluzi, the two sides agreed on Saturday that the government will fly late president Lungu’s body from Johannesburg to Lusaka next week Wednesday, June 18. Burial will take place on Monday, June 23, 2025.

In a message, the Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema thanked Dr Bakili Muluzi for his unwavering support and prayers during efforts to break the impasse, which has been hanging for some days.

SEER 1’S COMMENTARY ON ECL’S DEATH DANGEROUS AND DIVISIVE — MMD

SEER 1’S COMMENTARY ON ECL’S DEATH DANGEROUS AND DIVISIVE — MMD.

By Rev Vernon Daka
MMD Deputy National Treasurer

My concerns are valid and may reflect the thoughts of many Zambians who are troubled by the public commentary of Seer 1, especially concerning the recent death of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu (ECL). Let me address this in a clear and detailed manner.

My Critical View on Seer 1’s Commentary on ECL’s Death,
The passing of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has deeply affected the nation. It is a moment for mourning, reflection, and unity. However, the public statement made by Seer 1 (Andrew Ejimadu), a controversial figure who presents himself as a man of God, I feel has caused further division, confusion, and emotional distress—especially among Zambians still grappling with grief.

1. Seer 1’s Core Mistake: Taking Political Sides
A person who claims to speak for God must reflect God’s character—righteousness, impartiality, compassion, and truth. However, Seer 1 has used this solemn moment not to encourage healing, but to push a political narrative and attack certain individuals. He has taken sides publicly, blaming some and excusing others, without full context or moral balance. This is not the role of a prophet or spiritual leader, especially in a foreign land.

God’s servants are called to mediate peace, not stir tension. A true prophetic voice brings the nation together—Seer 1 did the opposite.

2. Lack of Spiritual Sensitivity
Instead of helping Zambians mourn and seek God’s direction during a national crisis, Seer 1 turned a sacred moment into a spectacle. Death—especially of a national leader—is not a time for self-promotion, political endorsement, or divisive commentary. Seer 1 has trivialized a national tragedy, showing spiritual immaturity and a lack of reverence.

3. Abuse of Influence and Misinformation
Seer 1 is not Zambian, yet he wields influence over a section of Zambians, especially youth who follow him on social media. That influence carries spiritual and ethical responsibility, which he has abused. By spreading unverified, biased, and emotionally manipulative messages, he is fueling confusion, resentment, and division—at a time when Zambians need clarity, comfort, and unity.

4. Undermining Zambian Sovereignty
Seer 1 is a foreigner. While Zambia is a peaceful and tolerant nation, he has overstepped boundaries. He is meddling in internal affairs, making political statements that could incite public unrest or influence national sentiment in ways that are neither healthy nor respectful. Zambia must protect its sovereignty—foreign nationals should not be allowed to interfere in sensitive state matters, especially in such a divisive tone.

5. Exploiting the Name of God
Perhaps the gravest mistake is that Seer 1 continues to speak “in the name of God,” while violating biblical principles:

God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33).

Woe to those who say, “Thus says the Lord,” when the Lord has not spoken (Ezekiel 13:6).

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God (Matthew 5:9).

Seer 1 has brought confusion, accusation, and division—not peace.

A Word to the Zambian People
Zambians must not take this lightly. The spiritual manipulation of a grieving nation is dangerous. This is not just about politics—it is about the soul of the nation.

Let us:

Be discerning about who we listen to.

Protect national peace and sovereignty from foreign interference.

Honor the dead with dignity.

Seek God’s wisdom, not sensationalism.

Hold spiritual leaders accountable, especially when they mislead or exploit.

Final Word
Seer 1’s appearance during this time of national mourning is not a prophetic act—it is a reckless misuse of spiritual authority and a violation of Zambia’s peace. Zambians must guard their minds, protect their hearts, and pray for unity, truth, and healing.

Let the Church, traditional leaders, and all responsible citizens stand up and reject voices that divide, regardless of how popular or powerful they may appear.

“Refrain from using the death of ECL”- Council of Churches in Zambia

“Refrain from using the death of ECL”

By Caren Mwaka

The Council of Churches in Zambia -CCZ- has called on political players to refrain from using the death of former president EDGAR LUNGU for selfish motives.

CCZ General Secretary, EMMANUEL CHIKOYA says the council has noted attempts by politicians to exploit the grieving period of Mr. LUNGU for personal or partisan gain.

In a statement issued to ZNBC News, he has appealed to politicians to prioritise the nation over political interests, noting that true leadership is demonstrated by putting people first especially during times of national grief.

And Father CHIKOYA has also urged government and the LUNGU family to expeditiously reach an agreement concerning funeral and burial arrangements.

LUNGU FAMILY REACHES DEAL WITH STATE AFTER CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP ALICK BANDA AND PRESIDENT MNANGAGWA MEDIATE

LUNGU FAMILY REACHES DEAL WITH STATE AFTER CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP ALICK BANDA AND PRESIDENT MNANGAGWA MEDIATE

By  Thumelo  Sibusinso , Pretoria South Africa

In an unexpected turn of events marked by spiritual diplomacy and political negotiation, the family of former President Edgar Lungu has finally agreed to return his body to Zambia and allow the government to take part in the funeral arrangements. The breakthrough was made possible through the joint efforts of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Catholic Archbishop Dr Alick Banda, ironically the same cleric once branded “Lucifer” by segments of the UPND government due to his outspoken criticism of their leadership.

Archbishop Banda, despite past political friction, stepped forward as a critical bridge builder in the negotiations, leveraging his close relationship with the Lungu family and his moral authority within the Catholic Church. Alongside President Mnangagwa’s regional stature and personal rapport with the Lungu household, the two managed to broker a delicate ceasefire after weeks of deadlock.

For weeks, the standoff over the late president’s body had raised public concern, with the family reportedly refusing to involve the government in any funeral arrangements. The government of Zambia had tried and failed to break the impasse, exhausting both diplomatic language and backroom threats.

High level envoys including former Vice President Enock Kavindele and others were dispatched in a last ditch effort to negotiate. However, they reportedly returned empty handed, save for a few mobile phones purchased in South Africa, without securing the body or any formal agreement from the family.

One source familiar with the failed mission remarked, “They went with hope and came back with shopping bags. Not even a signed note. The family was firm, and the government’s silver had dried.”

Despite the government’s earlier frustrations, Archbishop Banda and President Mnangagwa’s involvement brought a different tone, one rooted in spiritual appeal, kinship, and regional brotherhood. Their approach succeeded where political muscle had failed.

Even with this progress, the Lungu family has not opened the door without caution. They have placed firm conditions on the government’s participation, including guarantees that the funeral will be free from political grandstanding, that the family’s wishes will be honoured, and that the ceremony will be conducted with dignity and respect befitting a former head of state.

The government has yet to issue a formal response to the conditions, but sources at State House indicate that consultations are ongoing and a mutual understanding is within reach.

Former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu Deserves a Dignified State Funeral- LAZ

**DR. EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU DESERVES THE HIGHEST HONOUR AND STATE FUNERAL AS FORMER PRESIDENT: A PLEA TO THE FAMILY TO ALLOW THE PROTOCOL FOR STATE FUNERAL TO TAKE ITS FULL COURSE IN RESPECT OF HIS FUNERAL AND BURIAL**

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) joins the entire country in expressing its grief and sorrow at the passing of the Sixth President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, on 5th June 2025 in South Africa. It is for this reason that on 11th June, 2025, the LAZ President led Council Members in paying their respects and signing the book of condolences at Belvedere Lodge in Lusaka.

Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu was a senior member of the Legal Profession and was given the huge responsibility and privilege, to serve the people as President of the Republic of Zambia, the highest office of the land.

LAZ has keenly followed the recent developments and public discourse regarding the late former President’s funeral arrangements. Unfortunately, there is no legislation to guide the nation in balancing private interests and state protocols in times such as these. However, it is our considered view that, having held the office of President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu ceased to be an ordinary or private citizen and a state funeral is the least we owe him as a society.

We are reminded by the comments, albeit in passing, of the High Court Judge in the case of The People Vs. The Secretary To The Cabinet, Ex Parte Kawische Kaunda 2021/HP/0768, which opined that a former President is not an ordinary person, and hence entitled to a state funeral, which is a public funeral ceremony, observing the strict rules of protocol, held to honour people of national significance.

The family remains a critical stakeholder regarding the funeral arrangements of the former President and is concerned, correctly so, about the feelings and customs of the society, as the custodians of the wishes of the deceased, but the State has a crucial role to play and the citizens at large have a legitimate interest to be

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PATRIOTIC FRONT CALLS FOR DIGNIFIED MOURNING AND NATIONAL UNITY
LUSAKA, ZAMBIA

June 14, 2025

My fellow citizens,

WE continue to stand together as a nation united in grief. On Thursday, we heard the unifying words of His Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema, as he called upon us all to embrace peace, love, and unity during this difficult time of mourning for our former Sixth Republican President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

I speak today, not merely as the Leader of the Opposition, but as the President of the Patriotic Front, to stand in solidarity with President Hichilema’s profound and timely message as we mourn a leader who served our nation with dedication.

This isn’t a moment for partisan divides, but for remembering what truly binds us as Zambians: our shared humanity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to peace and stability. For the Patriotic Front, this loss is particularly profound, but I urge all our members to recognise our former President was a leader for all Zambians, transcending political affiliations.

President Hichilema rightly urged us to embrace the bereaved family and all citizens. In times of profound sorrow, political lines must dissolve, giving way to empathy and shared grief. We extend our deepest condolences and collective strength to the bereaved family; we feel this pain acutely and stand with all Zambians in mourning.

His Excellency also made a crucial point: political differences should never translate into enmity. This principle, which my party and I have always championed, must guide us now more than ever. Robust debate and diverse perspectives are hallmarks of a healthy democracy, but these must never descend into hatred or animosity. We may disagree on policy, but we must never lose sight of our shared identity as Zambians working towards a common future.

We wholeheartedly echo the President’s firm declaration that government will not allow lawlessness and anarchy. As leaders, it’s our collective responsibility to ensure peace prevails and the rule of law is upheld. All citizens must play their part in maintaining order and demonstrating respect for our institutions. Violence and disruption have no place in a democratic Zambia, especially during national mourning.

To our supporters, Patriotic Front members, and all Zambians, I implore you: heed these calls for calm. Let’s channel any sadness, frustration, or anger into constructive avenues. Let’s show the world that Zambia is a mature democracy, capable of navigating challenging times with grace, dignity, and unity. Let’s mourn our former President with the dignity and respect he deserves, remembering his legacy as a president for all Zambians.

This is a time for reflection, healing, and reaffirming our national values. Let us stand together, hand in hand, as one people, one Zambia, one nation. Let us honour the memory of the Sixth Republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu by upholding the principles President Hichilema has so eloquently articulated: peace, love, and unity.

May God bless the bereaved family, may God bless the Patriotic Front, and may God bless our beloved Republic of Zambia.

Thank you.

President Hichilema Apologizes  to African Delegates for Delay in ECL’s Burial Plans

By: Sun FM TV Reporter

President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed disappointment over the politicization of former President Edgar Lungu’s funeral, calling for unity and responsibility during the national mourning period. He emphasized that the focus should be on giving the late 6th Republican President a dignified send-off, rather than using the occasion to advance political differences and rivalry.

The president urged Zambians and political stakeholders to allow the burial to proceed respectfully, reserving discussions on national matters for a more appropriate time.

President Hichilema made these remarks after signing the book of condolences in memory of President Lungu at Belvedere Lodge in Lusaka.

Earlier, President Hichilema confirmed that the late former President Edgar Lungu will be buried in Zambia, following ongoing discussions regarding funeral arrangements.

Speaking when he met with the special envoy from Zimbabwe, the Vice President, Constantino Chiwenga, at State House, President Hichilema acknowledged the challenges in reaching an agreement with Mr. Lungu’s family on a burial date, but emphasized that government is hopeful that an official arrangement will soon be finalized and announced.

The president stressed that his priority is to engage in positive dialogue rather than conflict, ensuring that discussions respect the wishes of Lungu’s family while maintaining national unity.

He has since apologized to African delegates for the delay in finalizing the burial program.

ZIMBABWEAN President Emmerson  Mnangagwa has described Zambia’s late sixth President Edgar Lungu as not only a fellow statesman but also a personal friend and former university colleague.

Speaking shortly after signing the book of condolence at the Zambian Embassy in Harare yesterday, President Mnangagwa took a moment to recall the roots that connected him to the late former president, as law students at the University of Zambia where both pursued legal studies, long before presidential convoys and State House doors opened.

Dressed in black suit with the Zimbabwean flag scarf tightly wrapped around his neck as usual, the Zimbabwean leader said Lungu will be remembered in Zambia and beyond as a soft-spoken yet firm leader who prioritised peace and regional integration throughout his tenure.

He also emphasised that the late Lungu’s foresight and approach to diplomacy made him a valuable partner in cross-border cooperation and development initiatives.

“We have lost one of our illustrious leaders in the region. He was committed not only to providing leadership to the people of the Republic of Zambia, but to the rest of the region. He was one of us,” President Mnangagwa said.

Lungu died on June 5, in South Africa and his remains are yet to be repatriated for his final rest in Zambia.

The Speaker also shared a personal tribute, revealing that Mr. Lungu was not just a national figure but also a personal friend and colleague.

She recalled their time working together on legal cases before both entered the political arena.

Her comments come as the country continues to honor the memory of Dr. Edgar Lungu, who passed away on June 5, 2025, in Pretoria, South Africa, and whose contributions to Zambia’s political and legal landscape remain widely recognized.

Vice President Mutale Nalumango has questioned whether it is treasonous for the family of the late former President Edgar Lungu to demand a state funeral without the presence of the Head of State.

Speaking during a question-and-answer session in Parliament, Mrs. Nalumango emphasized that the matter at hand is serious.

She urged Zambians to use Mr. Lungu’s funeral as an opportunity to unite the country, rather than allowing political divisions to overshadow the occasion.

The veep further stated that Mr. Lungu should be mourned with dignity, without political differences taking precedence.

She also clarified that, despite political disagreements with the sixth Republican President, the government never wished him harm.

Mrs. Nalumango was responding to Matero Member of Parliament Miles Sampa, who asked whether the government would honor the Lungu family’s demand that President Hichilema should not be present near the late President’s remains.

GOVERNMENT POLICY ON NATIONAL MOURNING

201. Mr Lufuma asked the Vice-President:

(a)whether there was any Government policy on national mourning; and

(b) how many days were applicable to each personality who qualifies for national mourning, by category.

Mr E. C. Lungu: Mr Speaker, there is a Government policy in place on national mourning and it is categorised into two, namely, State funeral and official funeral.

Mr Speaker, the days which are applicable to each personality who qualifies for national mourning, by category, are as follows:

(i) State Funeral

Personality Period of Mourning

Current Personality Former Personality

President 7 days 5 days

Vice-President 5 days 3 days

Chief Justice 3 days 1 day

Speaker of the

National Assembly 3 days 1 day

Cabinet Ministers 3 days 1 day

(ii) Official Funerals

Personality Period of Mourning (Current Personality only)

Deputy Minister 1 day

Secretary to the Cabinet 1 day

Attorney-General 1 day

Ambassador/High Commissioner 1 day

I thank you, Mr Speaker.

Mr Lufuma: Mr Speaker, correct me if I am mistaken. In the recent past, there was an ambassador who passed away and a period of national mourning was declared yet, from the hon. Minister’s explanation, this person did not qualify for a State funeral. Could he, please, clarify.

The Vice-President (Dr Scott): Mr Speaker, the answer to that question was very explicit. There are five categories of office holders who are entitled to State funerals and this does not include ambassadors. For official funerals, there are four formal office holders entitled to State funerals. This is the information that we have and it is what we have given out.

I thank you, Sir.

Mr Mwiimbu: Mr Speaker, can His Honour the Vice-President explain to me, to this House and the nation the distinction between a State funeral and an official funeral, and whether, during the mourning period, solemn music is supposed to be played on all radio and television stations in Zambia.

The Vice-President: Mr Speaker, the only information I can give, since it was not related to the question, is that, when I get my five or three days mourning period, depending on whether I am in office or not, I will not object to people playing music on the radio.

I thank you, Sir.

Laughter

Mr Deputy Chairperson: Order!

The question is about the difference between official and State funeral. You may want to clarify that.

The Vice-President: Mr Speaker, I thought there were two questions and answered one, as you would have ruled …

Laughter

The Vice-President: … had you thought of it. However, …

Mr Deputy Chairperson: You can give a bonus answer.

The Vice-President: Mr Speaker, I am afraid that the bonus answer is that I do not know.

I thank you, Sir.

Laughter

Mr Chisala (Chilubi): Mr Speaker, may I learn from His Honour the Vice-President whether the Government is considering extending official funerals to Back Benchers, Permanent Secretaries and District Commissioners, since they are also leaders.

The Vice-President: Mr Speaker, we, certainly, have not got round to considering that particular issue yet. When we have solved the problem of unemployment, we will turn our attention to that. Meanwhile, there is nothing under consideration in that line.

I thank you, Sir.

Professor Lungwangwa (Nalikwanda): Mr Speaker, I am sure that His Honour the Vice-President has, in his official or individual capacity, attended official and State funerals. Has he cared to find out what the distinction is between the two?

Interruptions

Mr Deputy Chairperson: Order!

The impression I get is that the question has already been answered. However, His Honour the Vice-President may respond.

The Vice-President: Mr Speaker, I answered the same question to my ability, which was very limited, it so happens, and it remains limited, unless the hon. Member wishes to send me a note telling me what the difference is.

I thank you, Sir.

Why Are We Living With Threats Every Day? Can’t We Engage Without Threats?

Why Are We Living With Threats Every Day? Can’t We Engage Without Threats?

By Dr Lawrence Mwelwa

Every day now, it feels like threats have become the government’s favourite language. We hear them at funerals where we should find comfort, we hear them in press briefings where we expect truth, and we hear them even from leaders who should unite, not divide.

Is this what freedom looks like — living in fear of arrest if you speak up, of losing your job if you disagree, of being humiliated if you ask questions?

A healthy nation does not threaten its people into silence; it listens, it debates, it persuades. We must ask ourselves: can’t we engage without threats? Can’t leaders defend their ideas with facts and dialogue instead of intimidation? Zambia is bigger than fear.

We are one people — not enemies. It is time to lower the fists and open the doors for honest conversation. Only then will peace, dignity and true democracy live among us again.

NJOBVU CALLS FOR LEGAL REFORMS AMID FUNERAL CRISIS FOR LATE PRESIDENT

NJOBVU CALLS FOR LEGAL REFORMS AMID FUNERAL CRISIS FOR LATE PRESIDENT.

Democratic Union (DU) President Ackim Anthony Njobvu has called for urgent legal reforms in the wake of what he termed a “national embarrassment” surrounding the funeral of Zambia’s late sixth Republican President. Speaking in the aftermath of the President’s televised national address, Mr. Njobvu welcomed the call for unity but criticized both its timing and content.

Mr. Njobvu expressed disappointment that President Hakainde Hichilema’s address came several days late, following the announcement of the former President’s passing. “That message was overdue,” he said, adding that it should have been delivered immediately after the news of the former President’s death to provide leadership and clarity to the nation during a time of mourning.

While the message of unity was described as “welcome,” Mr. Njobvu felt that the President should have used the opportunity to give the nation clear direction regarding the funeral arrangements. He questioned why, with the official seven-day mourning period nearing its end, there was still no confirmed plan on the repatriation or burial of the late leader.

The DU leader raised particular concern about the legal vacuum surrounding the entitlements and protections of former Presidents in Zambia. He attributed the current confusion to outdated laws that were not enacted in good faith. “Some of these laws were enacted by MMD not to serve the nation, but to bar Dr. Kenneth Kaunda from returning to politics,” he said.

Njobvu emphasized that successive governments have failed to revise or repeal these laws, leaving the country vulnerable to legal and diplomatic embarrassment. He explained that the ongoing standoff between the government and the late President’s family over funeral arrangements is a direct consequence of these problematic legal provisions.

He further noted that the government, while following existing laws, appears insensitive due to the absence of humanitarian engagement. “Certain instances do not require strict application of the law. Sometimes you must engage on humanitarian grounds and reach a compromise,” he stressed, adding that such a move would have helped the nation save face before the international community.

The opposition leader cautioned against blaming the current administration entirely, stating that the problem is structural. However, he emphasized that the state must now act responsibly to correct the situation by engaging the family meaningfully and respectfully, with the aim of reaching consensus on how to proceed.

Mr. Njobvu also took issue with the President’s mention of enforcing the law and bringing perpetrators to book in the same unity message. “That should not have come from the President. His role at this time is to serve as a father figure, to calm tensions, not to issue what sounds like threats,” he said.

He suggested that such statements should have come from ministers or spokespersons, leaving the President to focus on healing and leadership. Njobvu also called on other political leaders, particularly in the ruling UPND, to avoid issuing statements that could further divide the country during this emotional period.

Turning to the future, Njobvu urged Parliament to revisit and amend laws governing the benefits and treatment of former Presidents. He proposed that once a leader leaves office, they should be barred from re-entering politics if they are to retain their benefits, thereby reducing politically motivated legal disputes.

He underscored that such laws must be designed to serve all Zambians equally, rather than targeting individuals or political opponents. “We forget that political power is temporary,” he said. “We must pass laws that serve citizens, not political interests.”

Mr. Njobvu concluded by stating that the situation offers a vital learning opportunity for the country. “We have lost a national leader under painful circumstances. The least we can do is ensure his legacy is honored with dignity, and that our laws are never again used as instruments of division or confusion.”

As the nation awaits a resolution to the standoff, calls for legislative reforms and responsible state conduct continue to grow louder. The late President, who served the country at its highest level, remains in a legal and diplomatic limbo a scenario many Zambians believe should never be repeated.

MUVOMBO CALLS FOR NATIONAL UNITY AND CONSTITUTIONAL RESPECT AS ZAMBIA MOURNS FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU

MUVOMBO CALLS FOR NATIONAL UNITY AND CONSTITUTIONAL RESPECT AS ZAMBIA MOURNS FORMER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU

Lusaka, 14th June 2025
Reported by: Wagon Media News Desk

As the nation continues to mourn the passing of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, Winter Muvombo, Managing Director of the Muvombo Development Initiative, has called on Zambians to embrace unity, forgiveness, and constitutional order during this solemn time. Speaking at Belvedere Lodge in Lusaka, the official venue for national mourning, Muvombo signed the Book of Condolence and offered a moving tribute to the late leader’s legacy.

He highlighted President Lungu’s significant contributions to national development, particularly in the area of infrastructure. Road construction projects under his administration, Muvombo noted, not only transformed the country’s landscape but also created jobs and stimulated economic activity. He further praised Lungu’s leadership during difficult periods between 2015 and 2020, and especially commended his peaceful handover of power in 2021 — a gesture that strengthened Zambia’s democratic credentials.

“President Lungu will be remembered for his industrious service to the nation and his commitment to peace,” Muvombo stated. “He set an example by gracefully accepting the outcome of the 2021 general elections, a hallmark of true statesmanship.”

Muvombo appealed to all Zambians, regardless of political affiliation, to use this moment of national mourning as an opportunity to reflect, reconcile, and reinforce the spirit of unity. He stressed that African funerals are more than ceremonies — they are pivotal moments for healing and national introspection.

“This is not the time for division or blame,” he said. “It is a time to come together, to reflect on the path forward, and to reaffirm our shared identity as one nation.”

He called on political and civic leaders to actively engage with the Lungu family and ensure the late president is given a dignified state funeral. Muvombo emphasized that the involvement of the sitting President in such events is not optional but a constitutional obligation that signifies respect for the office and for national unity.

Responding to public concern over the withdrawal of Lungu’s retirement benefits, Muvombo explained that the decision was consistent with constitutional provisions, not political maneuvering.

“The Constitution is clear: a former president who returns to active politics forfeits certain benefits,” he said. “This is about respecting the rule of law, not targeting individuals. Our democracy is built on the foundation of constitutionalism, and we must uphold it without fear or favor.”

He clarified that the constitutional basis for revoking benefits does not prevent the state from honoring President Lungu with a state funeral, as the two matters are governed by different legal provisions.

Muvombo concluded with a strong appeal to the media to play a positive role in promoting peace and national cohesion.

“We urge the media to highlight the values of unity, dignity, and service that President Lungu represented,” he said. “Let us remind ourselves and each other of the importance of working together beyond political divides.”

“Let us honor his memory not only with words, but with actions that strengthen our democracy and bring our people closer. That is the legacy he would have wanted — a stronger, more united Zambia.”

SPEAKER DEMANDS STATEMENT ON POOR NETWORK

SPEAKER DEMANDS STATEMENT ON POOR NETWORK

SPEAKER of National Assembly Nelly Mutti has directed Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati to deliver a ministerial statement next Wednesday on the poor Airtel network and the measures being taken to resolve the problem.

Ms Mutti said there is need for the nation to be informed about the reasons behind the network provider’s poor services and the actions being taken to address the issue.

Ms Mutti said this when she responded to Moomba Member of Parliament Fred Chaatila, who raised a question about the services of Airtel on urgent matters without notice in Parliament yesterday.

Ms Mutti said Mr Mutati should also brief the House on the ministry’s progress in installing communication towers in rural areas to improve connectivity.

“This matter is affecting everyone, we need to know why the services are so poor and what is being done to ensure the service provider comply with stipulated guidelines,” she said.

And Vice-President Mutale Nalumango has called on the nation to prioritise tree-planting initiatives as a crucial step in combating deforestation and promoting environmental sustainability

PF Chipangali MP  Declines to Sign ECL’s Condolence Book, Citing Personal Grief

Chipangali Member of Parliament Andrew Lubusha says he will not sign the book of condolences for the late former President Edgar Lungu, insisting that a son does not sign a condolence book for his own father.

Mr. Lubusha explains that his absence from recent parliamentary proceedings is a direct result of the ongoing mourning period, stating he will not attend Parliament until after the burial of the late Head of State.

AGROECOLOGY COORDINATOR OUTRAGED BY GOVERNMENT’s INABILITY TO PURCHASE MAIZE FROM PEASANT FARMERS

AGROECOLOGY COORDINATOR OUTRAGED BY GOVERNMENT’s INABILITY TO PURCHASE MAIZE FROM PEASANT FARMERS

Lusaka… Saturday June 14, 2025 – The Socialist Party (SP) has criticised the Zambian government’s recent announcement regarding its inability to purchase all maize produced by peasant farmers during the 2024–2025 farming season.

Mr. Graster Mundi, the National Coordinator for Agroecology and a member of the Socialist Party’s Central Committee, described the statement made by Minister of Agriculture Reuben Mtolo Phiri as both “saddening and frightening.”

Mr. Phiri, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Chipata Central in Eastern Province, had earlier revealed that the government lacked sufficient funds to procure the entire maize harvest from farmers.

In his reaction, Mr. Mundi expressed disappointment that such a declaration was made at a time when the nation should be celebrating a bumper harvest, which he attributed to favourable rains in the previous season.

He disclosed that those most likely to be excluded from the government’s maize purchase programme were small-scale farmers, particularly from rural constituencies such as Chipata Central – ironically represented by the same minister.

Mr. Mundi stated that his concerns extended beyond the mere purchase of maize.

He criticised the broader agricultural system, highlighting issues related to production, marketing, and the lack of autonomy for peasant farmers.

He noted that farmers, despite their hard work, were being told by the Head of State to strive harder to improve their livelihoods, while the government continued to expose them to exploitative market forces.

He further lamented the absence of value addition initiatives in the agricultural sector, accusing successive governments of failing to promote local processing and packaging of produce such as cotton, groundnuts, and sunflower.

“In Chipata Central, where the Minister himself is the MP, how many peasant farmers are actually benefiting from processing and selling their produce locally or internationally?” Mr. Mundi questioned.

He warned that abandoning this vital segment of the economy would make poverty eradication impossible.

He reaffirmed the Socialist Party’s position, saying that under the leadership of party President Dr. Fred M’membe, the approach to agriculture would be fundamentally different.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mundi emphasized that the party would ensure that no valuable produce from provinces such as Eastern would leave unprocessed and that value addition would become a key pillar of agricultural development.

He also stressed the importance of food sovereignty and peasant self-determination as essential components of national development.

“I’ve Really Learnt a Lot in Opposition – If We Win Power Again, I Won’t Use a V8,” Says Ghanaian Politician

“I’ve Really Learnt a Lot in Opposition – If We Win Power Again, I Won’t Use a V8,” Says Ghanaian Politician

Henry Kwabena Kokofu, a prominent figure in Ghana’s political landscape, has sparked conversation with a humble reflection on leadership and public service.

Speaking about the lessons he’s learned while his party has been in opposition, Kokofu made a striking promise: if his party regains power, he will not use a luxurious Toyota Land Cruiser V8 – a vehicle often associated with government privilege and extravagance in many African countries.

The V8, widely used by senior government officials across the continent, including in countries like Zambia, Ghana, and Nigeria, has become symbolic of elite status and political comfort. Kokofu’s remarks challenge that tradition, offering a rare acknowledgment of how power can distance leaders from the daily realities of ordinary citizens.

“I have really learnt a lot in opposition,” Kokofu said. “If we win power again, I won’t use a V8.”

His comments are being interpreted as a critique of political excess and a signal that public officials should prioritize humility and accountability.

In countries where economic hardship is widespread and public trust in government is often strained, statements like these can resonate deeply with citizens who feel alienated by the lifestyles of those in power.

While some have welcomed Kokofu’s statement as a sign of changing political culture, others remain skeptical, viewing it as political rhetoric aimed at winning votes.

Nonetheless, his words highlight a growing call across Africa for a new kind of leadership – one that is less about status and more about service.

Messi set to start as Inter Miami opens Club World Cup campaign

Messi set to start as Inter Miami opens Club World Cup campaign

Lionel Messi is set to lead Inter Miami in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off tonight, June 14, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

The tournament, expanded to 32 teams, features Inter Miami in Group A against Al Ahly (Egypt), Porto (Portugal), and Palmeiras (Brazil). Messi, a three-time Club World Cup winner with Barcelona (2009, 2011, 2015), is expected to start in the opener against Al Ahly, despite recent concerns after he requested a substitution in Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Colombia on June 10.

No injury has been confirmed, and the move may have been precautionary. Inter Miami qualified as the host nation’s representative after winning the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, a decision that sparked controversy since they didn’t win the MLS Cup.

The team has struggled in 2025 under new coach Javier Mascherano, with a shaky MLS start and a Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal exit

Messi, at 38, remains the team’s cornerstone, with 20 goals and 16 assists in just 19 MLS games last season, but he’s shown frustration with the squad’s inconsistency and lack of depth.

Key players like Jordi Alba, Yannick Bright, and Gonzalo Luján are out injured for the opener, and no new signings were made, leaving the roster thin.

PASTOR FLEES AFTER VICTIM DIES DURING PRAYERS

Saturday, June 14,,2025

Kanyama Police Station, through Kanyama West Police Post, received a report of a sudden and unnatural death today, Saturday, June 14, 2025, at approximately 1710 hours. The report was made by Mr. Elias Mwanza, aged 48, of Kanono Area, Kanyama West Compound in Lusaka. He reported that his son, Mr. Oscar Mwanza, aged 25 of the same address, had died unexpectedly at their residence around 1600 hours.

According to the initial statement, the deceased had been complaining of painful legs for the past two weeks. In seeking spiritual healing, Mr. Mwanza invited a local pastor identified as Mr. Trust Moyo, believed to be between 25 and 35 years old, and affiliated with Zioni Church located near Yellow Shop in Kanyama Compound.

It is alleged that during the prayer session, the said pastor instructed the family to provide a mixture of eggs and Coca-Cola, which was administered to the deceased. In addition, the pastor placed a stone on fire and, upon heating, used it to apply pressure to the deceased’s legs. Immediately after this act, the deceased screamed, collapsed, and became unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the incident, the pastor allegedly fled the premises through a window and is currently on the run. His whereabouts remain unknown.

Police officers visited the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation. The body of the deceased has since been transported to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary and is awaiting a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

An inquiry file has been opened, and investigations into the matter are actively ongoing. Members of the public with information on the whereabouts of the suspect are urged to report to the nearest police station.

Trump to host military parade amid ‘No Kings’ protests

US President Donald Trump will preside over a huge military parade in Washington on his 79th birthday Saturday, as nationwide “No Kings” protests underscore America’s deep divisions over his second term.

Trump’s long-held dream of a parade will come true as nearly 7,000 troops plus dozens of tanks and helicopters rumble through the capital in an event officially marking the 250th anniversary of the US army.

The army says the event could cost up to $45 million.

At the same time, protests by the so-called “No Kings” movement are expected across the United States against what organizers say is a Trump personality cult.

Organizers said the rallies would be the largest since Trump returned to office in January, adding that they were “rejecting authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics, and the militarization of our democracy.”

Thousands more demonstrators are expected to turn out in Los Angeles to protest against Trump’s deployment of troops in America’s second-largest city following clashes sparked by immigration raids.

Trump says the Washington parade will be “like no other” — but has promised to use “very big force” if protesters attempt to disrupt the spectacle.

The highly unusual show of US martial might meanwhile comes a day after Trump boasted about how Israel had used American military equipment in its strikes on Iran’s nuclear program.

  • Rain on Trump’s parade? –

But the parade may face disruption from another source — the weather. Thunderstorms could hit Washington on Saturday when the parade is taking place.

The US army said on Friday that the weather was being “closely monitored and taken into consideration, but at this point nothing has changed.”

Trump meanwhile said he wasn’t bothered. “It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t affect the tanks at all, it doesn’t affect the soldiers. They’re used to it. They’re tough,” he said.

The rare military parade is the largest in the United States since the end of the Gulf War in 1991.

Nearly 7,000 soldiers will march past, wearing uniforms dating back through US history to its independence from Britain.

More than 50 helicopters will also be involved including Apache gunships and Chinook and Black Hawk transport choppers.

Around 150 military vehicles — including 28 Abrams battle tanks and 56 armored vehicles — will rumble past too.

The parade is meant to end with a parachute display as members of the army’s Golden Knights team jump in and present Trump with a US flag.

The route will take them past historic landmarks including the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, ending up near the White House.

Trump has been obsessed with having a parade since his first term as president when he attended France’s annual Bastille Day parade in Paris at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron in 2017.

  • ‘Vulgar display’ –
But Trump’s opponents accuse him of using the event to feed his ego.

“No Kings” organizers said they expected millions of people in more than 1,500 cities to take part in the protests.

They said it was a “direct response to Donald Trump’s self-aggrandizing” parade, “funded by taxpayers while millions are told there’s no money.”

California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who slammed Trump for sending National Guard troops into Los Angeles without his consent, said it was a “vulgar display of weakness.”

“It’s the kind of thing you see with Kim Jong Un, you see it with Putin, you see it with dictators around the world,” Newsom said on Thursday. “To fete the Dear Leader on his birthday? What an embarrassment.”

In Los Angeles, where organizers said they expected 25,000 people to protest against Trump’s immigration policies, there would be one huge balloon of Trump wearing a diaper and another of him wearing a Russian military uniform.

Minnesota lawmakers shot in their homes in ‘politically motivated assassination’

0

Two Minnesota lawmakers were ambushed in their homes overnight by an assailant dressed as a police officer.

Minnesota state senator John Hoffman (DFL) in Champlin and Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman (D) in Brooklyn Park have been identified as the victims.

Hortman and her husband died from their wounds, while Hoffman and his wife are in the hospital, officials said.

Governor Tim Walz (D) called in a “politically motivated assassination.”

KTSP reported that police were responding to the shooting at Hoffman’s home when they got a call of a similar attack at Hortman’s home. Responding officers saw the suspect, who fired at them before escaping.

They said he was wearing a vest, taser, and badge and impersonating a police officer, according to Chief Mark Bruley of the Brooklyn Park Police. ‘No question, if they were in this room, you would assume they were a police officer.'”

Police have issued a warning to residents to remain in their homes as a manhunt ensues.

Walz announced in a press conference that Melissa Hortman and her husband died from their wounds in what he called a “politically motivated assassination,” and that Hoffman and his wife are at the hospital.

At the press conference it was reported that there was an exchange of fire between the assailant and police before he escaped from Hortman’s home.

It was also noted that the assailant left on foot and, in his car, police found list of lawmakers they believe the shooter was targeting.

“When we did a search of the vehicle there was a manifesto that identified many lawmakers and other officials, we immediately made alerts to the state, who took action on alerting them and providing security where necessary,” Police Chief Mark Bruley told reporters.

According to Tom Hauser of KSTP, “Gov. Walz activated the Emergency Operations Center as lawmakers across the state, including members of Congress, have been put on alert. A news conference scheduled for 9 a.m. I’m told multiple victims at both shooting locations. Still working to confirm conditions.”

MAGA fans spin wild conspiracy that Democrats had Minnesota Democratic lawmakers shot

Hours after it was reported that a Minnesota Democratic lawmaker and a member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party were ambushed and shot in their homes, supporters of Donald Trump leapt into action by suggesting the Democratic party was behind the “targeted” shooting.

Early Saturday, Democratic House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark were shot and killed in their home after police responded to a similar shooting of DFL State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, both of whom survived.

With a manhunt underway seeking the assailant who was dressed as a police officer and left behind a manifesto in his car that included a list of other lawmakers who appear to be future targets, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt posted a statement from Donald Trump on X about the tragedy.

“I have been briefed on the terrible shooting that took place in Minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack against State Lawmakers. Our Attorney General, Pam Bondi, and the FBI, are investigating the situation, and they will be prosecuting anyone involved to the fullest extent of the law. Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God Bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place!” Trump reportedly said.

On X, where the statement was posted, MAGA supporters had their own ideas about why the two Democrats were shot.

The theory goes that both Hortman and Hoffman voted against their party and, therefore, were targeted for retribution.

In the responses to Leavit, X account, Global Report, wrote, “State Rep. Melissa Hortman and State Sen. John Hoffman, shot at their homes last night, recently opposed party lines. Hortman backed repealing free healthcare for undocumented immigrants; Hoffman joined Senate Republicans to pass it. “

That led to a flurry of agreement among MAGA X users that Democrats are willing to murder their own for not toeing the line.

American Deplorable wrote, “@DNC obviously.”

MAGA fan Mirthful Moments, added, “The two just happened to vote against free healthcare for illegal aliens last week Just a coincidence?”

“NO coincidence, “George Gipson replied. ” Most likely an illegal or a far left disgruntled Democrat who didn’t like free healthcare being voted against by one of their own. Anyone with common sense should have that scenario as their first thought until proven otherwise.”

“This is the direct result of the dem politicians’ violent and hateful rhetoric. Rep Hortman has just voted to end benefits to illegals in MN,” suggested Beatrice.

RubyTubee wrote, “Probably a lunatic Democrat…”

JCom added, “Both lawmakers recently crossed party lines to vote against healthcare for illegals. Walz and the D party and their media need a new narrative after LA and the hearing yesterday. Just saying. Common sense. Sad what the D party and MSM have caused our country to become. For God’s sake have someone look at the Smith-Mundt revision to make the media start telling the truth again and stop the lies and bias. None of this happens with a free and fair media.”

Trump gushes about Putin after his ‘happy birthday’ phone call

0

Donald Trump says Putin called him “to very nicely wish [him] a Happy Birthday.”

Trump on Saturday took to his own social media site, Truth Social, to spill the details about a purported call with the Russian leader.

“President Putin called this morning to very nicely wish me a Happy Birthday,” Trump wrote, adding, “but to more importantly, talk about Iran, a country he knows very well.”

“We talked at length. Much less time was spent talking about Russia/Ukraine, but that will be for next week,” Trump added. “He is doing the planned prisoner swaps – large numbers of prisoners are being exchanged, immediately, from both sides.”

Trump concluded:

“The call lasted approximately 1 hour. He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end.”

Trump family member ties president to political assassination

President Donald Trump is “directly” responsible for what Governor Tim Walz said is a politically motivated assassination, according to a member of the Trump family.

A man over the weekend allegedly posed as a police officer and fatally shot a Democratic state lawmaker in her home. According to the Associated Press, the same suspect also shot and wounded a second lawmaker, who could still live.

Mary Trump, a trained psychologist and the president’s niece, weighed in on the recent attacks:

“As you may have heard two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses were shot in a targeted and politically motivated attack. State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark were assassinated. State Seator John Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times and there is still hope that they will survive,” Mary Trump wrote.

She added, “These attacks are the direct result of the dangerous political climate Donald Trump has created, purposefully and maliciously, driven by his need for division and retribution, and his thirst for power.”

“Such incidents make even more urgent the need for us to protest while also increasing the need for us to keep ourselves and each other safe,” Trump’s niece added.

‘They Treat You Like God’: Pitso Mosimane Says He’s ‘More Appreciated’ Abroad Than in South Africa

‘They Treat You Like God’: Pitso Mosimane Says He’s ‘More Appreciated’ Abroad Than in South Africa

Veteran South African football coach Pitso Mosimane has opened up about the level of recognition he receives at home compared to abroad, particularly during his time coaching Al Ahly in Egypt.

“I Am Loved, But I’m More Appreciated Abroad”
In a candid interview with SuperSport TV, Mosimane admitted that while he does feel loved in South Africa, he believes his contributions to football are more valued outside the country.

“I think I am more appreciated a little bit outside than in my country, but yes, I am loved in the country,” he said.

“In Egypt, They Treat You Like God”- Pitso Mosimane

Pitso Mosimane, who enjoyed immense success with Egyptian giants Al Ahly, explained how the level of admiration he experienced in North Africa far exceeds what local coaches receive at home.

“You see, every time I move around, people give me respect, and I am humbled. It is the game of football that has given me that chance,” he reflected.

“But in Egypt, it is another story, and that is [Al Ahly], the biggest club, one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Pitso Mosimane on Local Clubs and Public Reception
The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach drew comparisons between the treatment of coaches in South Africa and Egypt, suggesting that in Mzansi, even high-profile figures from top clubs often go unnoticed.

“Look, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are big in the country, we all know that, but the coach of Orlando Pirates and Chiefs can pass [in town] and it is okay.”

“In Egypt, if you coach Al Ahly, you don’t pass, they stop you and they treat you like God,” Mosimane concluded.

Social Media Reacts
Mosimane’s remarks have sparked a flurry of reactions on social media.

@TakuraChamuka;

Some very confusing statements by the great coach. I think he has been shown great love and support.

@dyanieric;

Makhala njalo! He’s never coached my team so why would I care about him, he’s appreciated in Chloorkop and that should be enough.

@Mtolosam;

Okay guys can we agree to hugging him when we see him😂

Wicknell Chivayo Beats Africa’s Richest Man After Splashing US$60 Million

Wicknell Chivayo Named One of Africa’s Top Philanthropists After Giving Away $60 Million

Controversial Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has landed a spot among Africa’s top philanthropists, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Nigerian billionaires Tony Elumelu and Aliko Dangote.

In its latest report titled “Giants of Generosity: Africa’s Top Philanthropists Shaping the Continent’s Future,” Fortune Afrika placed Chivayo in the top five biggest givers on the continent, ranking him second only to Elumelu. The report highlights Chivayo’s staggering US$60 million in donations during 2024, making him the largest individual donor in Southern Africa.

Wicknell Chivayo Named One of Africa’s Top Philanthropists
Unlike Elumelu and Dangote, who give through structured foundations focused on entrepreneurship, education and health, Chivayo takes a more informal and unpredictable approach. He gives directly, without a registered charity or official channels, favouring musicians, footballers, churches, and content creators in Zimbabwe.

More than 150 vehicles, including luxury models, were reportedly handed out in 2024 alone, on top of large cash gifts.

“Wicknell represents a rising class of African philanthropists who operate outside Western models, focusing instead on direct impact,” said Fortune Afrika.

A New Kind of Philanthropy?
Chivayo’s methods have sparked both admiration and controversy. Supporters say he’s changing lives fast and visibly. Critics argue that his giving is flashy, unaccountable, and driven by ego or political motives. Still, the numbers don’t lie: with over $60 million donated in just one year, he now sits above even Aliko Dangote on Fortune Afrika’s latest philanthropy ranking.

Dangote, through his foundation, continues to pour vast resources into health, education, and disaster relief across Africa, but in 2024, it was Chivayo’s unconventional generosity that grabbed the spotlight.

Chivayo’s inclusion in the top philanthropists list is a rare moment of positive international recognition for a Zimbabwean businessman.

DStv Loses 1.2 Million Subscribers In Just 12 Months, Blames Powercuts & Inflation

MultiChoice loses 1.2 million DStv subscribers across Africa in 1 year, blames financial woes
Satellite broadcaster MultiChoice has lost a staggering 1.2 million DStv subscribers across Africa in just one year. The company is pointing fingers at widespread economic hardship and rising costs of living.

“We experienced significant financial disruption for economies, corporates and consumers across sub-Saharan Africa,” the company said in a statement posted on 12 June 2025.

This marks one of the biggest subscriber drops in the pay-TV giant’s history.

South Africa hit hard by price hikes
Out of the 1.2 million drop, 589,000 subscribers were lost in South Africa, where DStv increased prices by an average of 5.7% on 1 April 2024. MultiChoice cited “ongoing macro-economic pressure” and the rise of streaming alternatives as key reasons.

“Combined with the impact of structural industry changes in video entertainment such as the rise of piracy, streaming services and social media, this has materially affected the overall performance of the MultiChoice Group,” the statement read.

The remaining 591,000 losses came from across the rest of Africa, including Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia.

“Extreme power disruptions in countries like Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi, and ongoing fuel and electricity issues in Nigeria, have affected subscriber activity,” said MultiChoice.

With prices up by as much as 31% in some regions, many customers are walking away.

Customers speak out on social media
Disgruntled former users are flooding X (formerly Twitter) with comments.

Leonard Makombe wrote:

“Interesting that they heap all on ‘pressures on consumer spend’ without looking at what they have done to retain the current subscribers.”

Brian Mandipaza added:

“I’m among the 1.2 million subscribers they lost. I am not going back unless they introduce pay per view or something more flexible.”

Another user, Kudzanai Sharara, quipped:

“They should add poor performance by Manchester United.”

Others accused the company of being out of touch.

@patand1624 said:

“Their content is old, too repetitive especially any channel that is not sport… we are being scammed.”

“They don’t cater for all Africans. It’s either South African or American content,” posted @06_chirasha. “I have to go to YouTube to watch my Zim content.”

Showmax rises but DStv stumbles
Ironically, while DStv’s subscriber base shrinks, Showmax is growing fast. The streaming service saw a spike in users following its relaunch in February 2024. However, discontinued products like Showmax Pro and diaspora packages affected year-on-year revenue reporting.

Walter Mzembi Arrested Days After Secret Mnangagwa Meeting

Walter Mzembi Arrested Days After Secret Mnangagwa Meeting

In a dramatic twist, former Foreign Minister Walter Mzembi was arrested on Friday, 13 June 2025, just two days after he made headlines for meeting President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House.

Mzembi is now expected to appear in court, where the magistrate will either cancel the warrant or order that he be held in custody until his trial concludes.

Mzembi, who has been in exile since 2018, was picked up on an outstanding arrest warrant after skipping court during his corruption trial seven years ago. His sudden return and high-profile meeting with the President had already sparked outrage, especially since he was still officially a fugitive.

Cancer, Exile and a Quiet Return
Mzembi fled Zimbabwe in 2018, claiming he needed urgent cancer treatment in South Africa. At the time, he was facing charges of criminal abuse of office. He later alleged he was being politically targeted following the fall of former President Robert Mugabe in the 2017 military coup.

From South Africa, Mzembi moved to Zambia, where he lived in quiet exile—until he quietly resurfaced in Harare on 11 June 2025 for a surprise meeting with Mnangagwa at State House.

The Corruption Charges
Back in 2019, the courts issued a warrant for Mzembi’s arrest after he failed to appear in court. He was accused of converting US$2 million worth of television screens, meant for public viewing zones during the 2010 World Cup, to personal use.

The National Prosecuting Authority even said it would ask Interpol to track him down, but there’s little evidence those efforts were seriously followed up, especially since Mzembi continued moving freely between Zambia and South Africa, which are both Interpol member states.

Zimbabweans React After Walter Mzembi is Arrested: “It’s All a Script”
After ZimLive broke the story of his arrest, Zimbabweans took to social media to share their thoughts. While some were surprised, many were deeply sceptical. Some claimed the arrest was just political theatre—a staged act to make the government look tough on corruption while quietly welcoming Mzembi back into the fold. Others said he had been misled into thinking he would be forgiven.

Here are some of the comments:

@DrNoma99:

That was the agreement – we will catch you a bit to save face, pretend we are prosecuting you then we will release you. The admission is complete.

@VMusinachirevo:

Everything is rehearsed, we are following a written down script, the arrest is just a procedure to clear him of the charge at the courts, then boom, he gets a ministerial position, and the grooming of him to succeed Mnangagwa starts.

@Ishmaelmandinye:

Mnangagwa, stop it. Kusvoresa ma courts netupolitics twemahumbwe nxaa. Zimbabweans no have respect for these courts because of bogus judges and their bogus judgements nxaa

Bill Cosby is Facing a Foreclosure Lawsuit and Has Quietly Listed His NYC Townhouse for $7M

Bill Cosby has quietly listed his Upper East Side brownstone for just under $7 million while he continues to fight a foreclosure lawsuit related to the property. The lender claims Cosby and his wife owe millions, but they dispute these allegations. The four-story home, located on East 61st Street, includes six bedrooms, a private elevator, and a formal dining room with a fireplace. Cosby and his wife, Camille, purchased the home in 1980. The brownstone later became the New York residence of their son, Ennis, who was murdered in 1997.

According to the New York Post, CitiMortgage has filed a foreclosure lawsuit in Manhattan Supreme Court, stating that the Cosbys defaulted on a loan from 2010. The lender claims the couple owes over $4.2 million in unpaid principal, interest, and fees. However, Cosby’s legal team argues that the debt was miscalculated and overstated.

The property was quietly listed this week. It is situated on a historic block near Second Avenue, and viewings are by private appointment only.

This isn’t the only legal issue involving Cosby’s real estate. Another foreclosure case involves his larger Manhattan home on East 71st Street. First Foundation Bank claims the couple defaulted on a $17.5 million loan for the 12,000-square-foot Beaux-Arts mansion, which they reportedly bought in 1987 for around $6 million.

Both foreclosure cases remain active in court, but only the East 61st Street brownstone is currently on the market.

Cosby, now 87, has faced growing backlash over the years. In 2015, he was arrested and charged with sexual assault for allegations made by multiple women, but his conviction was overturned in 2021. Despite the legal reversal, several women continue to accuse Cosby of sexual assault, all of which he denies.

Young Thug Wants To Quit Rapping To Make Streaming Money

Young Thug has joked that he wants to quit rapping to make the kind of money professional streamers bring in.

Appearing on Adin Ross’ Kick stream, Thugger found out that the controversial streamer was making millions of dollars appeared interested in a career change.

He said: “I’ma stop doing music and start streaming. I think I’m gonna stop. I’m telling ya, I’m done rapping and gonna start streaming.”

Thug then reasoned why he wanted to make the switch: “Y’all live a cool life. Y’all go everywhere everyday. Y’all got cats wondering around this bitch. Y’all got all types of crazy stuff.”

Ross also attempted to get Thugger to reveal the release date for his upcoming album Uy Scuti but was stonewalled by the Atlanta rap star.

Despite being coy about when the album is dropping, Young Thug has been rolling out the project and also been employing some unusual tactics.

Ahead of the release, select members of the press have been sent packages which when opened reveal a live spider.

Nicki Minaj Receives Apology From Shannon Sharpe After Diss Track

Nicki Minaj has received a lengthy apology from Shannon Sharpe after she dissed him on new Lil Wayne collaboration “Banned from NO”.

On the track, the Trinidad born rapper spat: “‘Bout to cop you slides, all you do is flip-flop / If I send a pic of Shannon, you ain’t that Sharpe.”

The line appeared to be a barb about the NFL legend turned media star commenting “Nicki who?” when a fan told him she wanted to appear on his Club Shay Shay podcast.

In a new episode of his Nightcap show, Sharpe apologized to Minaj and attended to explain the comment as a misunderstanding.

He said: “I used to go back and forth with people. I was talking about Nikki Haley. Nikki Haley said it’s really great for everybody of Black America, and I was like … ‘When has it ever been great?’”

Sharpe continued: “Nicki, I was not trying to be disrespectful. Of course I know who you are. I would be remiss to say that I thought you knew who I was, or that you knew anything about Club Shay Shay. I’m not that arrogant.

“Nicki, I apologize. I meant no disrespect. You’ll always have an open invitation if you ever want to come sit down and have a conversation. Even if you just want to have a private conversation on the phone or something. It won’t go any further between you and I.”

He concluded by saying: “That was not my intent, but intent only matters to me because clearly you’re still offended. So I apologize sincerely and hopefully we can move forward.”

On the track, Minaj also saved some venom for JAY-Z and the NFL for snubbing Lil Wayne at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show.

Minaj spat: “NFL, fire some n-ggas and then call us.”

The “Anaconda” rapper has been one of the most vocal critics of the NFL’s decision to overlook Wayne in favor of Kendrick Lamar.

Minaj appeared to specifically blame JAY-Z for the call, slamming him for working with the NFL: “One n-gga took a knee. The other n-gga took the bag. He gon get you ‘n-ggers’ in line every fkng time.”

Cardi B Wants To Make Her WWE Debut

Cardi B is desperate to make her WWE debut according to the company’s Chief Creative Officer, Paul “Triple H” Levesque.

Already announced as host of this August’s SummerSlam, Triple H spoke to Billboard about the prospect of the female MC getting physical in the ring.

He said: “I don’t know if anybody can control Cardi B, let me just start with that. So if she wants to, I think it’s going to be hard to talk her out of it. And then what can we expect? Who the hell knows. The one thing I know about Cardi is, whatever she’s going to do, is what she’s going to do. And you’re sort of kind of just hanging on to the tiger’s tail a little bit there. So she’s a lot of fun to work with. Has been so far with this.”

The wrestling legend continued: “She’s excited to do it. I think, as everybody knows, she’s a big fan and has, you know, talked a lot about the business over the years and all that stuff and comments on it a lot. So when you work with people like that, it’s exciting. We’ll see, we’ll see where that goes. But we’re thrilled to be working with her.”

Cardi was previously called out by former WWE Women’s Champion, Liv Morgan and her tag team partner Raquel Rodriguez who proposed taking on the “Bodak Yellow” superstar and Megan Thee Stallion in a two on two contest.

They said: “I would love to see Cardi and Meg The Stallion. I think Meg would be incredible. They’ve also been so active with us on Twitter and just responded to different things. Those two would be interesting to see in the ring. Us versus Cardi and Meg. Make it happen.”

Morgan later added: “That offer still stands for them if they want a shot at our newly-crowned championships. I’d love to beat them in my hometown.”

If Cardi did mix it up in the ring this summer, she would join fellow Hip Hop superstars like Travis Scott and Sexyy Red in getting physical with WWE superstars.

Judge halts Trump’s election order, rules it oversteps presidential power

A federal court has dealt a major blow to President Donald Trump’s controversial executive order aimed at reshaping the nation’s election rules, ruling it unconstitutional and a clear overreach of presidential authority.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Denise J. Casper blocked the March 25 directive, siding with Democratic attorneys general from several states who filed a legal challenge. Trump’s order sought sweeping changes to federal election procedures, including a mandate for documentary proof of citizenship to register, rejection of mail-in ballots arriving after Election Day, and tying federal election funds to compliance with these new restrictions.

“The Constitution does not grant the President any specific powers over elections,” wrote Judge Casper in her ruling, affirming the states’ likely success in challenging the legality of the order.

The court found that Trump’s attempt to impose uniform federal rules would place an undue burden on states, both logistically and financially. “The requirements would burden the States with significant efforts and substantial costs,” Casper noted, echoing arguments made by the plaintiffs.

Although the White House defended the order as a necessary safeguard—framing citizenship checks as a “commonsense” measure and claiming it would ensure “free, fair and honest elections”, the ruling emphasized that citizenship is already a requirement for federal voting, and voters must attest to it on registration forms.

“There is no dispute (nor could there be) that U.S. citizenship is required to vote in federal elections and the federal voter registration forms require attestation of citizenship,” the judge added.

The order also sought to bar states from counting any mail-in or absentee ballots received after Election Day, even if postmarked on or before that date, a practice currently allowed in 18 states and Puerto Rico. That portion of the directive was also blocked.

States like Oregon and Washington, which rely heavily on mail-in voting, filed separate lawsuits warning that the order risked disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of voters. Washington’s Secretary of State, Steve Hobbs, noted that in 2024, more than 300,000 ballots in the state were received after Election Day.

In their suit, the attorneys general argued that Trump’s directive “usurps the States’ constitutional power and seeks to amend election law by fiat.” Legal experts widely agreed, pointing to the Constitution’s assignment of authority over elections to the states, with Congress allowed to legislate on federal elections not the president.

“Free and fair elections are the foundation of this nation, and no president has the power to steal that right from the American people,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James, celebrating the ruling.

This marks the second judicial rebuke of Trump’s executive order. A federal judge in Washington, D.C., had previously blocked provisions involving the proof-of-citizenship mandate for federal registration.

Despite repeated claims by Trump about widespread voter fraud, including his persistent and unsubstantiated assertions that millions voted illegally in 2016 and 2020, investigations and studies have found that illegal voting by noncitizens is extremely rare and often the result of clerical errors.

The Department of Justice and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment, according to AP. During earlier court hearings, DOJ attorney Bridget O’Hickey defended the order, saying it was designed to replace inconsistent state rules with uniform federal standards. She also speculated that ballots received after Election Day might be vulnerable to manipulation, a claim the court appeared to dismiss, given existing safeguards like postmark verification.
