Cassie to be the star witness in Diddy’s trial

Cassie Ventura, who dated music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs for over a decade, is expected to be a key witness in his upcoming federal trial, scheduled to begin later this month. Her testimony is anticipated to be among the most critical, given her long relationship with Diddy and her involvement in several legal developments surrounding the case.

In November 2023, Cassie filed a civil lawsuit against Diddy, accusing him of rape, human trafficking, and other crimes. The lawsuit was the first to publicly allege so-called “freak offs,” with claims that Diddy arranged sexual encounters between Cassie and male prostitutes while he watched. Diddy’s legal team initially dismissed the suit as a “shakedown,” but he settled the case just one day later for an undisclosed amount.

Though the NYPD stated at the time that Diddy was not the subject of an investigation, additional lawsuits from other alleged victims soon followed. Not long after, federal agents raided Diddy’s properties in Los Angeles, New York, and Miami. Reports indicate that Cassie has been cooperating with federal authorities, raising the possibility that her input helped secure warrants for the raids.

In May 2024, surveillance footage emerged showing Diddy physically assaulting Cassie in a hotel hallway. The video, published by CNN, depicts Cassie attempting to leave the hotel room before Diddy follows her and violently throws her to the ground. The prosecution and defense have since debated the admissibility and interpretation of the footage, with Diddy’s team calling in expert witnesses to challenge its accuracy.

Among four alleged victims expected to testify at the trial, Cassie is the only one scheduled to appear under her real name. Jury selection begins tomorrow, with opening arguments set to follow next week.

pastor Chris urges his congregants to ignore medical advice against taking of salt

Lagos-based pastor, Chris Oyakhilome, has stirred up controversy again after asking his congregants to ignore medical advice against taking of salt.

While preaching to his church members today May 4, Oyakhilome played some documentaries to them showing white doctors denouncing claims that salt is not good for the body.

While harping on all they have said, Oyakhilome argued that many people have d!ed from stroke and other diseases because they listened to their doctors advice not to take salt.

‘’We listen to the so called professionals and many have d!ed listening to them. Think how many people have suffered strokes and all kinds of ailments because they listen to their doctor. Think of how many people have been afraid of salt. In fact they have eliminated salt from their food.

I thought so myself too but this is why I talk to you about praying in tongues. From praying in tongues , the spirit of God talks and guides me. I speak in tongues and solutions come.

You have to let others know. You need salt , more salt than less salt. All the sick people being treated in the hospital, they are giving them salt but they don;t know. They repackage it and sell it to you in different forms.”

He recounted how God used salt to heal people. He went on the read the bible passage, Mark 9: 50 in which Jesus said Salt is good and that people should have some salt and have peace with one another.

His message has sparked a conversation online. While some agree with him, others argue that such message will could cause a medical crisis as some people may jjst ignore their doctors’ advice and start taking in salt.

Trump has clarified that he is not pursuing a constitutionally prohibited third term in offic

U.S. President, Donald Trump has clarified that he is not pursuing a constitutionally prohibited third term in office, despite previously floating the idea in public remarks.

In an interview aired on Sunday, May 4, on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump told moderator Kristen Welker, “This is not something I’m looking to do,” when asked about the possibility of a third term. He added, “I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody — ideally a great Republican — to carry it forward.”

Trump’s comments come amid speculation triggered by his own musings on the subject during recent rallies. While the U.S. Constitution limits presidents to two terms, Trump’s occasional comments suggesting a third term have drawn concern and criticism from opponents.

The interview was recorded during Trump’s visit to the University of Alabama, where he delivered a speech to graduating students at Coleman Coliseum ahead of the school’s commencement ceremonies.

Harry Kane wins his first trophy as Bayern Munich clinch 34th Bundesliga title

Bayern Munich have been crowned Bundesliga champions for a record-extending 34th time after Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw by Freiburg on Sunday.

The result sealed the title in dramatic fashion, despite Bayern’s own 3-3 draw against RB Leipzig on Saturday.

The Bavarians had come back from two goals down to lead 3-2 in Leipzig, only to concede a stoppage-time equaliser. That outcome meant second-placed Leverkusen had to secure all three points at Freiburg to keep the title race alive — but they too faltered, effectively handing Bayern the title.

The triumph marks a major milestone for English striker Harry Kane, who finally lifts his first major club trophy after several near misses during his career at Tottenham Hotspur. Since joining Bayern last summer, Kane has played a key role in their domestic campaign, contributing significantly with goals and leadership.

This latest Bundesliga crown reinforces Bayern’s dominance in German football, coming as their 12th consecutive league title in what has become an era of sustained success.

Though this season saw moments of inconsistency, Bayern’s depth, experience, and resilience ultimately proved decisive in a title race that lacked serious contenders down the stretch.

Brazilian Police arrest two in connection with an alleged plot to detonate explosives at Lady Gaga’s free concert

Brazilian authorities have arrested two individuals in connection with an alleged plot to detonate explosives at Lady Gaga’s free concert on Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, on Saturday, May 3 — the largest show of her career, attended by over 2 million fans.

The suspects were taken into custody hours before the performance, and the event proceeded without incident, leaving many questioning the seriousness or immediacy of the threat. Brazilian police later stated they withheld public information about the arrests to prevent panic and misinformation.

A spokesperson for Lady Gaga said the singer and her team were only made aware of the alleged plot through media reports the following morning. “

Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks,” the statement read.

The team also emphasized that they had worked closely with law enforcement during the planning and execution of the concert and were confident in the safety protocols.

The performance featured Gaga’s biggest hits — including “Born This Way,” a song embraced as an LGBTQ+ anthem — and took place under tight security, with 5,200 military and police officers deployed across the beach.

According to the Brazilian Justice Ministry and state police, the alleged plan was orchestrated by a group promoting hate speech, particularly targeting LGBTQ+ individuals.

Authorities said the group aimed to carry out an attack using homemade explosive devices and Molotov cocktails as a “collective challenge” to gain notoriety on social media. The group reportedly used violent online content to recruit teenagers under the guise of being “Little Monsters,” a nickname for Lady Gaga’s fans, in an effort to lure them into networks associated with extremism and self-harm.

Brazilian Police arrest two in alleged plot targeting Lady Gaga concert in Rio

One of the arrested individuals, described as the group’s leader — was apprehended in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul on charges of illegal weapons possession. A teenager was arrested in Rio de Janeiro on charges related to child pornography. Authorities did not detail their specific roles in the plot or how Lady Gaga’s concert became the group’s target.

As part of the investigation, raids were conducted at the homes of 15 suspects across several Brazilian states. Phones and electronic devices were seized, though police did not confirm recovering any actual explosives.

Despite the alleged threat, there was no disruption to the concert itself. Lady Gaga later expressed her gratitude to fans on Instagram, saying, “Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show – the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special. I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you

ONLY UNEMPLOYED COMPLAINING ABOUT K400 M-MEAL – MILUPI
… if you are in town, and you have no employment, there are real issues there

Infrastructure and Housing minister Charles Milupi has said that the only people complaining about high mealie-meal prices are the unemployed in towns because no one who is employed can complain about buying a 25kg bag of mealie-meal at K400.

And Milupi said the closure of the Millenium Challenge Corporation by the United States of America (USA) will affect planned works on four major roads across several provinces in the country.

Milupi also said that Zambians were heavily taxed, but the government could not reduce the taxes now as that would affect revenue generation in the country.

In an interview with Daily Revelation yesterday, Milupi said the price of mealie-meal was high because the price of maize …

SWEDISH EMBASSY SPONSORING CONFUSION IN ZAMBIAN MEDIA- MLC

SWEDISH EMBASSY SPONSORING CONFUSION IN ZAMBIAN MEDIA

THE Confusion seen in Lusaka during the World Press Freedom Day
celebrations was sponsored by the Swedish Embassy.

On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, the Zambian media, as always, turned up countrywide to celebrate the day under the theme “Reporting in the Brave New World –
The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”

This year, the media in Lusaka had two marches, one organised by the MLC and its usual national local organising committee of the World Press Freedom Day whose members selected from among the Zambian media sector.

Another march was a march sponsored by the Swedish Embassy and BBC Media Action against statutory media self-regulation which saw Swedish funded media NGOs, media owners and some freelance journalists break away from the usual WPFD organised march.

This has never happened in Zambia where journalists have two marches going the opposite direction in in one city, and issuing contradictory statements on the state of the media and its
journalists.

The Swedish Embassy-BBC Media Action funded march was proposing that the Zambian media and journalists go against their unanimous decisions made at their 2019 first and second Insaka held in Lusaka in which journalists chose to be regulated by a law the journalists would have developed instead of waiting for Government to do so.

At the first Insaka (Conference), journalists unanimously voted to have the Zambian media space regulated by a statutory self-media regulation law formulated by journalists for journalists.

And it was at this function that delegates appointed a Technical Working Group
(TWG) to come up with a layman’s statutory self-regulation media bill to be called the Zambia Media Council (ZAMEC) Bill, which now has been dubbed the Zambia Institute of Journalism (ZIJ) Bill.

The TWG appointed at the Insaka to come up with this draft bill comprised under the auspices of the Media Liaison Committee (MLC) comprised MISA Zambia, Zambia Union of Broadcasters and other Information Disseminators (ZUBID),
Bloggers of Zambia, Zambian Bloggers Network, Media Network on Child Rights and Development (MNCRD), Zambia Institute of Independent Media Alliance (ZIIMA), Panos
Institute Southern Africa, and the Zambia Media Women Association (ZAMWA).

Others were Mthoniswa Banda Consultancy (MB Zambia), BBC Media Action, Zambia Institute of Mass Communication (ZAMCOM), Zambia Community Media Forum (ZaCoMeF), Suma Systems, Press Association of Zambia (PAZA) and the Free Press Initiative (FPI).

The second Insaka held in August 2019 validated the proposed Media Self-Regulation Bill before it was given to Government to take it to parliament. This is the media bill which is now being called the Zambia Institute of Journalism Bill (ZIJ).

The change of name was
necessitated by advice received from legal drafters at the Ministry of Justice of the existence of other statutory regulation media laws such as the ZNBC and IBA Acts.

This ZIJ Bill developed and approved by the Insakas is the media bill that the Swedish Embassy is against and the same bill that the Swedish Embassy using the BBC Media Action is funding free-lance journalists and Swedish fund dependent NGOs to oppose and create division in the Zambian media fraternity.

Their march past in Lusaka where the Swedish Ambassador was sharing the same podium with Swedish funded NGOs is evidence enough of who the masters are and who the puppets
are.

But since the MLC and the media appointed Technical Working Group have a mandate from Zambian journalists, journalists’ unions, media associations, Editors’ Forum and the academic, these disturbances and divisions in the media fraternity being caused by the
Swedish Embassy will not go unnoticed and unchallenged.

The MLC is therefore writing to the owners of this Swedish money, the Swedish Government and copying the Zambian Foreign Affairs Minister, to take note of these foreign sponsored divisions and chaos in the Zambian media and online space as sponsored by the Swedish
Embassy led by Ambassador Johan Hallenborg.

The MLC will also be writing to the Director of Immigration and copying the Minister of
Home Affairs and Internal Security to look into the inimical media activities of BBC Media Action led by its Country Director Soren Johansen, who is Danish and is in Zambia on a work permit issued to him by the Immigration Department.

The MLC has always noted with concern the media destabilisation activities of BBC Media Action since it came into Zambia in which its parasitic behaviour has led to the weakening of established media organisation and diverting of media support funds from donor agencies.

This includes taking away funding from the umbrella bodies like the Zambia Community Media Forum (ZaCoMeF), including MISA Zambia, Panos Institute-thereby weakening the bargaining power of these media entities in Zambia.

The MLC has been open to internal discussions within the media sector on the ZIJ Bill and has always extended invitations to media owners and media NGOs who still have an input or reservations with this media bill to come forth and help improve this piece of legislation before it is taken to parliament.

The MLC is however opposed to foreign sponsored divisions and chaos in the media sector as being demonstrated by the Swedish Embassy using Swedish money.

The media in Zambia has always remained united in matters of press freedom and media professionalism even when the divide between state-owned and private-owned media was wide and evident because of media ownership and control.

The MLC will therefore not
standby while a foreign Government divides the media fraternity with impunity.

STOP REFERRING TO YOURSELF AS HONORABLE, YOU ARE JUST A CANDIDATE, AND DON’T USE PERSONAL MONEY TO BRING DEVELOPMENT – Laura Miti lectures Macky 2

“MPs cannot bring development. That is the role of the Executive wing of government at Central and Local Government.”

“MPs duty, in our system, is to pass laws and hold central government to account for the way it governs and manages resources.”

“What I don’t know is whether parliamentary candidates genuinely do not know these facts, or they choose to lie to constituents.”

“….wherever you go, the lament from citizens is that “we don’t see the MP”, but It’s not the MP’s face people want, it is the promised boreholes, bridges, dip tanks and roads.’

“Unfortunately, the now elected person cannot deliver on any of that, from their pocket, unless she or he is a dollar billionaire. Then, they do not have any real say on what money goes from the Treasury to their Constituency.”

“The other ….problem with Mr Kaira’s campaign borehole is how he refers to himself on the ‘vote for me’ poster as “Honourable.”

“Now, not even elected MPs should address themselves as Honourable outside the House business. But we love titles, even candidates are Hon.”

“One would have hoped a new generation of MPs would change a few things, but hey.”

ROBERT CHABINGA’S PARLIAMENTARY DIPLOMATIC INDISCIPLINE IS TOO GRAVE TO BE TOLERATED- Mutotwe Kafwaya

ROBERT CHABINGA’S PARLIAMENTARY DIPLOMATIC INDISCIPLINE IS TOO GRAVE TO BE TOLERATED.

Mutotwe Kafwaya writes

And sadly HH is quite. I don’t know whether HH found it acceptable that Chabinga would call out diplomats in the manner he did in his presser.

Let me be clear, I stand with the diplomatic corps.

Because of the image that Zambia has created in the eyes of the global community, USAID has given a lot to Zambia, this is similar to what DFID has done and Japaigo too.

Remember the donations that we received from the international community during the period of the declaration of draught as a national disaster. Americans donated, the people Burundi donated; to mention but just two.

I also have in mind the Kenneth Kaunda Wing of the Mulungushi International Conference Centre – a donation from the Chinese people.

All the good will that Zambia has built in the internetional community cannot be crushed by Robert Chabingas diplomatic indiscipline. In a normally functioning society, a member of one legislature cannot exercise diplomacy beyond sister legislative organs of other countries.

To see Robert Chabinga, a member of the National Assembly of Zambia castigating diplomats in the manner he did during his presser is embarrassingly painful. This so not only to the speaker of National Assembly of Zambia but also to the President of the Republic of Zambia as it is to all well meaning and patriotic Zambians.

It is embarrassing to the speaker because it shows that the speaker is presiding over a house of indisciplined members of parliament who have no capacity to draw diplomatic boundaries. This level of indiscipline also reflects the quality of orientation and capacity building that members of of the National Assembly of Zambia are granted.

But it is also embarrassing to the president of Zambia as it shows that any person in the country, and from any arm of government can come up with foreign policy and pronounce it as Chabinga did, and the state would remain indifferent as it has over Chabingas foreign policy pronouncement.

Foreign policy is key policy and must not be left to chance.

Yes Chabinga may have declared his open support for HH in spite of being an opposition member of parliament.

Yes HH may have encouraged Chabinga to be strong at Kasama airport in view of the disorganisation of the largest opposition political party in the country.

Yes the association of HH and Chabinga may be indisputably strong. But Chabingas proximity to the so called community house should not offer him a passport castigate diplomats in the fashion he did as this is ditrimental to the whole nation at large. It is worse that HH has decided to remain mute over Chabingas remarks as though he approves of them.

I strongly urge the president to take a position and clear the air as far as Chabingas rantings against diplomats is concerned. Zambia needs sustained support from the global community.

Our country is bigger than anyone of us. Let systems work.

Restoring EVERYTHING PATRIOTIC.

REAL CHANGE WON’T WAIT—YOUNG LEADERS LIKE MULAZA KAIRA AREN’T ASKING FOR PERMISSION TO DELIVER

REAL CHANGE WON’T WAIT—YOUNG LEADERS LIKE MULAZA KAIRA AREN’T ASKING FOR PERMISSION TO DELIVER

The FOX Newspaper | Editorial

In response to Laura Miti’s recent reflections on Mulaza Kaira’s entry into politics, it’s important to set the record straight—not with malice, but with clarity, conviction, and a dose of reality.

Yes, we agree: our political system has long been plagued by performative leadership and token promises. But to paint every effort by a young aspirant with the same old brush is to miss a historic shift in the making.

Hon Mulaza Kaira, known to many as Macky 2, is not just offering symbolism—he’s showing what leadership looks like before power is handed over. A borehole today isn’t a bribe; it’s a signal that he doesn’t believe in waiting until elections are over to start acting. It’s a message that service doesn’t begin with swearing in—it begins with showing up.

The claim that MPs cannot bring development is technically correct—but practically misleading. The tools of development may reside in government departments, but the spirit of development lives in leaders who inspire action, demand results, and mobilize resources both in and out of Parliament.

Young leaders aren’t naive about the Constitution. We know the role of MPs. But we also know the role of influence. And that’s what a committed MP does—they influence, they advocate, they unlock progress. They don’t hide behind technicalities.

If politics is to evolve, then it must allow room for fresh energy, fresh ideas, and yes—fresh approaches. It’s not about titles like “Honourable.” It’s about honouring the people, even before the ballot speaks.

So let’s not discourage genuine acts of goodwill from aspiring leaders. Let’s not mistake initiative for ignorance. What we’re witnessing is not the recycling of old habits—it’s the birth of a new era, where young leaders are stepping up, speaking out, and yes—starting now.

Because real change won’t wait.

PS KAWANA POINTS TO MUNIR ZULU’S SENTENCE AS WARNING AGAINST ONLINE MISCONDUCT

PS KAWANA POINTS TO MUNIR ZULU’S SENTENCE AS WARNING AGAINST ONLINE MISCONDUCT

By: Sun FM TV Reporter

Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has underscored the importance of the newly enacted cyber law, emphasizing its necessity in addressing the growing misuse of digital platforms across the country.

Speaking during a town stakeholders meeting in Livingstone, Mr. Kawana said the law is a crucial step toward restoring order and responsibility in the cyberspace.

He added that the cyberspace has seen a decline and a surge in harmful and misleading content.

The PS noted that online platforms are increasingly being used to spread false information, harass individuals, and incite unrest.

He cited the recent sentencing of former Lumezi Member of Parliament Munir Zulu, who was handed an 18-month prison term, as a reminder of the consequences of online misconduct.

Mr. Kawana also added that while cyberspace is valuable for communication and business, it has been dangerously unregulated for too long, adding that the new law is meant to strike a balance between freedom of expression and accountability for one’s actions online.

Zambia Urged to Shift from Political Talk to Wealth Creation — Dr. Lubinda Haabazoka

Zambia Urged to Shift from Political Talk to Wealth Creation — Dr. Lubinda Haabazoka

Renowned economist and former EAZ President, Dr. Lubinda Haabazoka, has called on Zambians to shift national discourse from politics to economic empowerment, innovation, and technology-driven development. Fresh from an international think-tank event, Dr. Haabazoka emphasized the urgent need for mindset transformation and structural economic reforms to harness the potential of Zambia’s youthful population.

“Artificial intelligence is not here to replace workers. It’s here to stay, but it will create structural unemployment. This means we need to begin studying more in areas like IT, blockchain, and other emerging skills,” Dr. Haabazoka said.

Highlighting global trends, he pointed to the rise of network states digital nations built on blockchain technology where individuals can trade, collaborate, and even pay taxes in crypto-based systems. He expressed a desire to bring such innovations to Zambia, citing the country’s political stability and youth demographics as major advantages.

“In Zambia, we’re not having the right conversations. Almost every table we sit at, we talk politics. Meanwhile, peers across the globe are busy building the future.”

Dr. Haabazoka challenged both aspiring entrepreneurs and capital holders to foster a culture of trust, discipline, and mutual support, noting the absence of robust angel investment mechanisms in the country.

“Those with surplus should be willing to help those with deficit start businesses. But for that to happen, we must become more trustworthy, hardworking, and goal-driven.”

He also criticized the nature of content consumed on social media, urging a shift toward value-based mentorship, business insights, and innovation-driven dialogue.

“We need more business mentors on social media—not just political critics or socialites discussing nonsense all day. We are what we consume.”

On leadership aspirations, he noted a growing trend among youth wanting to enter politics without building strong economic foundations first.

“You can’t be broke and aspire for office you’re not Jesus Christ. You’re a human being with material needs.”

He concluded by encouraging a spirit of love, entrepreneurship, and support for local businesses, emphasizing that wealth creation is a collective responsibility.

“Let’s not despise those who have money, let them inspire us. Money is not the root of evil. The lack of it is.”

President Hichilema Champions Agricultural Revival in Luapula, Urges National Unity Against Poverty

President Hichilema Champions Agricultural Revival in Luapula, Urges National Unity Against Poverty

President Hakainde Hichilema has declared Luapula Province a model for national agricultural transformation, citing its abundant natural resources and strategic potential to drive economic growth. Speaking during a tour of the Green 2000 farm in Kawambwa district last week, the President underscored the urgency of leveraging agriculture to combat poverty and unlock opportunities for Zambia’s youth.

“Every province must have a functional farming block, but Luapula stands out. Here, water, fertile soils, and soon, reliable power are already in place. We don’t need costly dams—this province can thrive through river-run irrigation with minimal investment,” President Hichilema asserted. He emphasized that the Green 2000 farm exemplifies how targeted agricultural projects can deliver jobs, financial returns, and business opportunities, particularly through initiatives like the Outgrower Scheme.

The President highlighted the paradox of Zambia’s resource wealth juxtaposed with widespread poverty. “God gave us tremendous resources, yet our people languish in abject poverty. We are stepping on riches but failing to harness them. This is a national shame we must resolve,” he declared, addressing both local and national audiences.

Contextualizing his vision for Luapula, President Hichilema praised the Outgrower Scheme, which empowers local communities by integrating them into commercial farming value chains. “This concept ensures our people gain skills, earn livelihoods, and move away from idleness. Luapula’s headmen are already onboard—now we urge the youth to prioritize work over beer,” he stated, calling for a shift in mindset to catalyze development.

The President’s remarks resonated with broader national themes of collective responsibility. “Change cannot happen alone. We need everyone—government, traditional leaders, and citizens—to unite in rebuilding Zambia,” he said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth.

Luapula Province, long overlooked despite its agricultural and hydrological potential, now emerges as a testing ground for Zambia’s agrarian revival. With the Green 2000 farm as a flagship project, the government aims to replicate its success nationwide, turning farming blocks into engines of job creation and poverty alleviation.

As the tour concluded, local headmen pledged to mobilize youth participation, signaling a renewed hope for Luapula’s future—and a blueprint for national progress.

“COMPLETING KAWAMBWA DISTRICT HOSPITAL IS MY RESPONSIBILITY, AND I WILL ENSURE IT IS DONE” – HH

“COMPLETING KAWAMBWA DISTRICT HOSPITAL IS MY RESPONSIBILITY, AND I WILL ENSURE IT IS DONE” – HH

While addressing the people of Kawambwa District in Luapula Province, His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the nation, with particular emphasis on the completion of Kawambwa District Hospital.

Once completed, this facility will provide essential healthcare services closer to the people of Kawambwa and surrounding communities, reducing the need for long-distance travel for medical care, enhancing maternal and child health services, and boosting emergency response capabilities.

Government, through the Ministry of Health remains steadfast in its efforts to revive stalled projects, complete ongoing constructions, and ensure that every Zambian, regardless of geographic location, has access to quality healthcare.

This is more than a pledge. It is a commitment already in action.

DON’T ACCEPT STATUTORY REGULATION…we have enough laws and bad laws for that matter- Dr M’membe

DON’T ACCEPT STATUTORY REGULATION

…we have enough laws and bad laws for that matter, says veteran journalist Dr M’membe

Lusaka… Sunday May 4, 2025 – Veteran journalist Dr Fred M’membe has called on the media industry in the country not to accept any statutory regulations, saying there are enough laws that govern the industry.

Dr. M’membe, who was also The Post Newspaper Proprietor, says the media industry is not like other professional bodies such as law, medicine and others that need regulation, saying the media survives under freedom of expression.

He bemoaned that the Cyber Crimes laws that have come in unfortunately weigh in heavily on journalists.

He said this yesterday during the World Press Freedom Day commemorations in Lusaka.

“No statutory regulation… Don’t accept that. Journalism is not like any other professional, it’s not like law, medicine – it can’t be regulated the same way. Media survives under freedom of expression! What is needed is not media regulation, we have enough laws and bad laws for that matter. As a journalist, you are not exempted from the Seditious laws, and now there are Cyber Crimes that have come in and they weigh very heavily on you. And they want to add another Act to that. There should be no manipulation that shoul make you accept that,” he urged.

“It’s sad that some of the colleagues we trained at The Post Newspaper at a high cost, today they have become Judas Iscariot. It’s not out of principle, but for a few pieces of coins. But you have to understand that Judas Iscariots will always be there and they have to be fought. Christ had a Judas, who are we not to have Judas. I didn’t know until this morning that some of my colleagues at The Post have joined the crusade for statutory regulation.”

Meanwhile, Dr. M’membe has indicated that the environment at the moment is not condusive for media houses to operate and make money due to the advent of online publications.

He said it is very difficult at the moment for a media outlet to make money and pay worker’s salaries unlike some time back before the advent of social media.

Dr. M’membe, who is also Socialist Party President, expressed concern that journalists are still dealing with issues his generation dealt with some 30 year ago.

“I spent 27 years in the media, I have been a reporter, a photojournalist, I have designed pages. I have been a sub-editor, editor in chief, managing director of media institutions. I have worked internationally, I have received many media awards, I am a cardinal of press freedom. My commitment to the media is permanent! It’s sad for me that today we are dealing with issues we dealt with 30 years ago,” he disclosed.

“I was one of the founders of MISA (Media Institute of Southern Africa), as a regional body and also establishing MISA in Zambia. The building where MISA is operating from today, we raised the money for it. We had partners who supported us and am glad the Swedish Ambassador is here. They have been with us for a long time. They supported MISA as a regional body they have been with us supporting the media, please continued doing so and we are grateful.”

UPND NOT THREATENED BY PF RECONCILIATION

UPND NOT THREATENED BY PF RECONCILIATION

By Nelson Zulu

The ruling UPND says it is not threatened by the recent reconciliation between the two opposition Patriotic Front factions ahead of the 2026 elections.

Matero Member of Parliament Miles Sampa last week announced that he is stepping aside from his position as Patriotic Front faction President to allow former President Edgar Lungu lead the party, in a move aimed at reconciling the two factions of the former ruling party and endorsed the former Head of State as the 2026 presidential candidate.

But UPND Deputy Spokesperson Elvis Nkandu has described the endorsement of Mr. Lungu as the 2026 presidential candidate by Mr. Sampa as political drama.
He has expressed confidence in the ruling party’s prospects, stating that the UPND sees no threat in the reunion of the factions led by Mr. Sampa and Mr. Lungu.

Mr. Nkandu has highlighted the ruling party’s strong record of development achievements nationwide, saying that voters will opt for continuity over fragmented alliances that lack substance and a clear developmental agenda.

WE’RE NOT HAVING THE RIGHT CONVERSATIONS IN ZAMBIA – ALMOST EVERY DISCUSSION IS ABOUT POLITICS

WE’RE NOT HAVING THE RIGHT CONVERSATIONS IN ZAMBIA – ALMOST EVERY DISCUSSION IS ABOUT POLITICS

Economist Dr Lubinda Haabazoka writes…

I just came back from an amazing event full of global thinkers, and I must admit—I’ve really missed platforms that offer such high-quality knowledge sharing.

One of my key observations is that the discourse in our country needs to evolve. We tend to focus too much on politics rather than on topics that can help us create wealth and support those in need.

Here are some interesting points I took note of:

Artificial intelligence is not here to replace workers. It’s here to stay, but it will create structural unemployment. This type of unemployment occurs when jobs are available in specific fields, but the workforce has different qualifications. This means we need to begin studying more in areas like IT, blockchain technology, and other emerging skills that support this growing industry.

In Zambia, we’re not having the right conversations. At almost every table where Zambians gather, the topic is politics. I’m guilty of this too. But at the event, I met young people—and peers my age—actively working on introducing cutting-edge technologies across continents. A notable team I met is developing a concept called network states. A network state exists in the cloud, built on blockchain technology. It enables sectors where people can trade, carry out cross-border transactions, and create new products and services. Even tax authorities can benefit by gaining access to crypto-based transactions within these domains. This is game-changing, and my dream is to bring these innovators to Zambia to explore the possibilities of building this here.

Zambia has incredible potential, especially with its young population, but we need a mindset shift. Believe me, the future of the world is in Africa. The USA, Europe, and much of Asia are facing a crisis of overproduction. Africa, on the other hand, still has room to grow. We have many opportunities, particularly in politically and economically stable countries like ours. What we lack is the right mindset to recognize and turn opportunities into tangible solutions. I often receive business proposals from youth, but we may lack structured mechanisms for funding such innovation. We don’t have enough angel investors. We need a serious conversation: those with surplus should be willing to help those with deficit start businesses. But for that to happen, we must become more trustworthy, hardworking, and goal-driven.

We need more business mentors on social media, not just political critics or socialites discussing nonsense all day. We are what we consume. The kind of information we expose our kids to shapes who they become. When I asked my average class where they see themselves in the near future, most said they want to be “Presidents.” Honestly, it’s better to be a successful businessperson who can afford to create impact than to spend your life moving from rally to rally. Once you’re successful, then you can venture into social work or politics through philanthropy or service. You can’t be broke and aspire for office—you’re not Jesus Christ. You’re a human being with material needs.

Finally, let’s love one another and help each other create wealth. Let’s support each other’s businesses. When you support a Zambian-owned business, you’re creating employment. But Zambian businesses must also operate efficiently to earn that support. Let’s not despise those who have money—let them inspire us! Money is not the root of evil. The lack of it is.

Pray well, guys.

GOVERNMENT URGED TO BE TRUTHFUL WHEN DISCUSSING ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC SITUATION

GOVERNMENT URGED TO BE TRUTHFUL WHEN DISCUSSING ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC SITUATION.

By: Sun FM TV Reporter

Economist Yusuf Dodia has urged leaders to be truthful and transparent when discussing Zambia’s economic situation.

In an interview, Mr. Dodia acknowledged that the country has made some progress in addressing poverty but emphasized the need for honesty in economic discourse.

He pointed out the inconsistency between government officials warning about unsustainable debt while ordinary Zambians continue to struggle with the rising cost of living.

Mr. Dodia stressed that the cost of living is increasing daily and urged leaders to be candid about the state of the economy, noting that the worsening situation has fueled public frustration.

He further remarked on the inconsistency among officials, with some discussing debt restructuring while others insist that everything is fine, despite widespread economic hardships.

He emphasized that only truthfulness can lead to meaningful solutions.

WE’VE NOT GIVEN TAX HOLIDAYS TO MINES, ZAMBIA WOULD COLLAPSE IF WE DID – KABUSWE

MINES and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe says government has created a “deal room” to connect mining licence holders with investors. Kabuswe says Zambia has not granted tax holidays to mining companies, warning the country would collapse if that were the case.

Speaking on the Hot Seat radio programme, Thursday, Kabuswe said the deal room would serve as a platform for negotiations, bringing together those who hold licences and those with the capital to develop them. He also warned that government would not support suppliers who delivered substandard goods to mining firms. “We have now formed what is called a deal room where those with licences and those with capital are brought together.

WHO WAS PAUL MUSHINDO?

WHO WAS PAUL MUSHINDO?

Many Zambians have been asking about Paul Bwembya Mushindo after a University in Chinsali was named after him. He is little known outside his native land and tribe.
But this excessively moderate man is a colossus among the pioneer Zambian ministers of the church, educationists, writers, and politicians and was honoured by King George of England in 1947 for his contribution to society.

Rev Mushindo was a quiet achiever who dedicated his life to the service of the church and his nation and was instrumental in the formation of the United Church of Zambia.
He was also instrumental in the unification of the protestant churches soon after the country’s independence.

A teacher, politician, author, and minister of the Church of Scotland, Rev Mushindo had seemingly endless energy combining all his demanding duties with the mammoth task of translating the Bible from English to Ichibemba, which took 53 years.

He was a very principled man and Zambians will be surprised to learn that he spent over 30 years without wearing any shoes.
He was born in 1896. Both his mother and father were members of the Bemba royal family.

His father Mr Mushindo the first was a nephew of Chiti Kafula, one of the important members of the Bemba royal household.

His mother, Kapolyo Mwaba was the daughter of Chief Mwaba Kabundi of the Ngulube clan in the Bemba district of Nkulungwe.

Like many Zambians who went to school in his time, Rev Mushindo graduated as a teacher and taught at the Church of Scotland school at Lubwa Mission near Chinsali Boma and at Shiwa Ng’andu where he met Sir Stewart Gore-Browne, a colonial settler who genuinely and steadfastly supported African advancement and emancipation.

While working as a teacher, he proceeded to Livingstonia, the present day Malawi where he studied theology and qualified as Minister of the Church of Scotland.

Sir Gore-Browne encouraged many Africans to take an active part in politics and supported their education. He was responsible for the sponsorship of Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula’s studies at Makerere University in Uganda. It appears Sir Gore-Browne’s influence led Rev Mushindo to develop interest in politics.

Rev Mushindo was appointed a member of the Northern Rhodesia African Representative Council for the Northern Province in 1944 and later became its chairperson. During debates in the council, he consistently opposed the establishment of the federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

In 1950, he joined the Chairperson of the African Welfare Societies late Donald Siwale in advocating African rule in Northern Rhodesia.
Rev Mushindo spoke on many other subjects that affected the livelihood of the people of his area. For example in 1948, he called on the government to establish a secondary school in Northern Province and campaigned for better prices for African foods and for an increase in the size of land allocated to peasant farmers.
He was the voice of the voiceless which made him an important figure for the people of Northern Province.

Rev Mushindo was ordained Minister of the Church of Scotland in 1947. His additional pastoral duties did not slow him down and Audrey I Richards who knew the Reverend well says in his preface to Mushindo’s  book, a Short History of the Bemba: “From 1926 onwards, he was headmaster at Lubwa and was at work at his school from 07:00hr to 12:30 and then after an hour’s rest, he would spend from 13:30hr to 17:30hr on the translation of the Bible. A heavy day I think.”
The translation of the Bible which was led by Reverend Robert McMinn started in 1913 at Mpandala and was only completed in 1966 at Lubwa.

It is incredible that Rev Mushindo had time to write  books despite his heavy days. He wrote three Bemba titles, Imilumbe Nenshimi (Riddles and Folktales), Amapinda Mulyashi (Proverbs in Conversations), and Ulubuto Mumfifi (Light in Darkness) and two English titles, A Short History of the Bemba and the Life of A Zambian Evangelist: the Reminiscences of Reverend Paul Bwembya Mushindo.

Historian Andrew D Roberts describes Rev Mushindo’s A Short History of the Bemba as a ‘very important source for Bemba history up to the death of Chitimukulu Chitapankwa (1883).’
“Mushindo gives much information not given by other writers, which no longer survives in Bemba oral traditions. His account of the Ngoni wars is particularly valuable in this respect, and on the whole it seems more accurate than the other published versions.
In writing my own account of Bemba history, I have depended heavily on Mushindo’s work to amplify, correct, or confirm my own records of oral traditions especially for events on eastern Bembaland,” says Roberts.

Another writer Audrey I Richards describes the book as “the fullest version of Bemba traditions to be written by a Mubemba and the people of Zambia will be grateful to Mushindo for writing down these traditions before the old men and women who could remember the past had died one by one, taking their memories with them.”

Rev Mushindo was able to collect the traditions of the Bemba because he spent his childhood in the royal palace of two Chitimukulu; Sampa and Makumba.
His works made him a venerable figure among the missionaries and the people alike were called upon to lead prayers and deliver historical accounts at many important functions.

When Sir Stewart Gore-Browne died in 1967, Rev Mushindo was asked to say the closing prayer at the funeral which was attended by first republican President Kenneth Kaunda and several ministers.

In 1971, at the accession ceremony for Chitimukulu Bwembya, Rev Mushindo became the first Christian Minister to be asked to speak at the traditional rites.

It was a great expression of the respect that the Bembas had for his knowledge of their traditions and history as it was also a confirmation of his aristocratic ancestry.
All that time, Rev Mushindo walked and cycled barefoot. Nobody remembers the exact date when he stopped wearing of shoes, but the incident which led him to stop wearing shoes is well remembered and collaborated by many who lived with Rev Mushindo.

One day, it happened that while at Mpandala working on the translation of the Bible in the 1940s, a hawker passed through Rev Mushindo’s office selling some merchandise which included a pair of shoe. Rev Mushindo bought without knowing that it was stolen somewhere. A few days later, the hawker was arrested and he revealed that he had sold the shoes to the Reverend. The hawker was taken to Mpandala where Rev Mushindo was found wearing the shoes. After hearing the story and the confession of the hawker, Rev Mushindo took off the shoes and handed them back to the owner and, vowed never to wear shoes again. He stuck to this decision until his dying day. That’s how principled, Rev Mushindo was. Eddie Mulenga Ndota, nephew of Ms Theresa Mwila Mutunga Mushindo, remembers Rev Mushindo as a strict disciplinarian but at the same time a very kind man who highly valued education.

“He was soft spoken but emphatic and what ever he said sank into one’s mind. He educated many people from his own extended family and that of his wife from his meagre earnings as a minister of the church,” recounts Mr Ndota. Mr Ndota said Rev Mushindo did not forget the incident of the stolen which he even made as his main theme in many of his sermons. He always warned people against stealing saying in Bemba: Nga waiba ilaya lika kulaya umweo, Nga waiba akaputula kakakuputula umweo, Nga waiba insapato shikakusapulula umweo. (If you steal a shirt it will steal your spirit, if you steal a short, it will break your spirit, and if you steal shoes, they will desecrate your spirit).

Rev Mushindo retired as Minister of the Church of Scotland in 1965 but volunteered to continue evangelising in order to help the growth of the United Church of Zambia.
He set up temporary residence at Mulashi Primary School which lies about three kilometers from Mpika town along the Great North Road.

It was while he was cycling back from an evangelisation trip back to Malashi that he was killed in a hit and run road accident in December 1972.

The car that killed Rev Mushindo was driven by a white couple who have never been found up to date.

He is buried at the Lubwa cemetery where all the pioneers of the Church of Scotland Mission and School at Lubwa are buried.

Even Zuma Was Better, Malema slams Trump as ‘Enemy of Africa’ at EFF Rally

Even Zuma Was Better, Malema slams Trump as ‘Enemy of Africa’ at EFF Rally

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema launched a scathing attack on U.S. President Donald Trump during a fiery address at the party’s Workers’ Day rally held on May 1, 2025, at the Zinniaville Sports Ground.

Malema branded Trump “the most illiterate president” and “an enemy of Africa,” condemning the American leader’s decision to cut financial aid to South Africa earlier this year. The aid suspension, announced in February, followed South Africa’s stance on land expropriation and its legal challenge against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

Calling the move imperialist, Malema accused U.S. of deliberately destabilizing African nations, particularly those showing solidarity with Palestine. He argued that the U.S. punishes countries that champion sovereignty and social justice.

“The U.S. doesn’t want African leaders who stand up for their people,” Malema said, citing the Democratic Republic of Congo’s turmoil as a consequence of foreign interference and mineral exploitation.

In a striking comparison, Malema declared, “Even Zuma was better than Donald Trump,” referring to former president, Jacob Zuma.

Malema’s remarks drew loud cheers from the crowd, reinforcing the EFF’s vocal opposition to Western influence on African affairs.

Trump criticised after posting AI image of himself as Pope

Trump criticised after posting AI image of himself as Pope

(BBC) US President Donald Trump has attracted criticism from some Catholics after posting an AI-generated image of himself as the Pope.

The picture, which was shared by official White House social media accounts, comes as Catholics mourn the death of Pope Francis, who died on 21 April, and prepare to choose the next pontiff.

The New York State Catholic Conference accused Trump of mocking the faith. The post comes days after he joked to reporters: “I’d like to be Pope.”

Trump is not the first president to be accused of making a mockery of the Catholic faith. Former US President Joe Biden caused outrage a year ago when he made the sign of the cross at a pro-abortion access rally in Tampa, Florida.

Christians and Muslims do not  worship the same God –  Catholic Priest

American Catholic Cardinal Raymond Burke, the former head of the highest court at the Vatican, has said that despite what some people claim, it’s not true that Christians and Muslims worship the same God.
—-
“I hear people saying to me, ‘Well, we’re all worshiping the same God, we all believe in love.’

But I say stop a minute and let’s examine carefully what Islam is, and what our Christian faith teaches us both.”

“In other words, fundamentally Islam is, Sharia is their law, and that law, which comes from Allah, must dominate every man eventually.”

“And it’s not a law that’s founded on love. To say that we all believe in love is simply not correct. We do not worship the same God, which is why Muslims seek to convert Christians to Islam and Christians seek to convert Muslims to faith in Jesus,”

KABANANA FAMILY ATTRIBUTES  FIRE THAT KILLED THREE CHILDREN TO LIGHTNING THAT IGNITED ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT

By: Sun FM TV Reporter

The family of three children who died in a tragic house fire in Lusaka’s Kabanana Township, has attributed the cause of the inferno to a lightning strike that led to an electrical short circuit during a rainstorm.

Family representative Emmanuel Chobwe told Sun FM TV News that the children’s father, Emmanuel Phiri, had left them at home to pick up his wife, who was stranded in heavy traffic in Chazanga Compound.

It was while he was in Chalo Banthu, Chazanga, that he received a distress call from a neighbor informing him that his house was on fire.

Mr. Chobwe dismissed allegations of parental negligence, instead citing poor road conditions as the main reason for the delayed response from the fire brigade.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, confirmed the incident and  identified the Deceased victims as Nathan Phiri, aged 7; Emmanuel Phiri Jr., aged 4; and Subilo Phiri, aged 2.

Meanwhile, Seventh-day Adventist Lusaka North District Pastor Wonder Hamukandi described the loss as heavy and called on Zambians to keep the bereaved family in their prayers.

Tanzania’s central bank  has prohibited the use of foreign currency for local transactions

Tanzania’s central bank said in a statement late Friday that it has prohibited the use of foreign currency for local transactions and payments.

The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) said under regulations issued by the government in 2025, pricing and payment for all goods and services within the country must be made in Tanzanian shillings.

The statement, signed by BoT Governor Emmanuel Tutuba, said the regulations also specify transactions that are permitted to be conducted in foreign currency.

It said foreigners, including tourists, are required to exchange foreign currency at commercial banks or exchange bureaus in Tanzania. They can still pay with bank cards or other digital methods.

The BoT also urged the public to report any violation of these regulations to the central bank through the Financial Intelligence Unit, the police, or any other law enforcement authority for appropriate action.

McKenzie demands answers on foreign staff in sports arts and culture entities

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has launched an inquiry into the employment of non-South Africans within his department’s entities, raising debates over job prioritization and immigration.

On May 2, McKenzie sent letters demanding details about foreign staff, including their names, nationalities, work permits, duration in South Africa, and critical skills.

This follows claims from parliament’s portfolio committee that entities like the Robben Island Museum favored foreigners for jobs. McKenzie clarified the audit would apply to all department entities to verify employment practices. “I was told there were no foreigners employed, but concerns raised here show otherwise,” he said, reaffirming his focus on reducing unemployment by prioritizing local hires.

A longtime immigration control advocate, McKenzie gave a three-day deadline for responses. Supporters praised his stance, echoing his “South Africans must come first”

But critics warn the move could stoke xenophobia, accusing him of scapegoating immigrants.

The audit’s findings may influence future hiring policies, as the department balances job protection with inclusivity.

FARMERS’ TOBACCO SOAKED AS RAINS HIT NAMBOARD SHEDS — TBZ PROMISES URGENT ACTION

FARMERS’ TOBACCO SOAKED AS RAINS HIT NAMBOARD SHEDS — TBZ PROMISES URGENT ACTION

Chipata | May 4, 2025

A storm of concern has hit Chipata’s tobacco marketing season as a group of local farmers faces major losses after their tobacco, left unattended for nearly two weeks, was soaked during heavy rains yesterday at the Namboard sheds.

The matter, now drawing attention from both farmers and civic leadership, has prompted a swift response from Chipata Mayor George Mwanza, who confirmed that his office had spoken directly with the leadership of the Tobacco Board of Zambia (TBZ).

“We have just spoken to the leadership of TBZ to engage their local coordinating team at the Chipata Floors to ensure that the farmers whose tobacco was brought to the sheds at Namboard 1–2 weeks ago, but had not yet been attended to, are assisted immediately,” Mayor Mwanza said in a statement shared with Fox Newspaper. “It is unacceptable for farmers to suffer due to inefficiencies. Their tobacco was soaked because no one had moved to buy or secure it in time.”

Mwanza emphasized the need for a “win-win” approach between buyers and growers. “The hardworking farmers should always be attended to quickly by their respective tobacco buying companies,” he said, calling on all stakeholders to respect the contributions of smallholder producers.

Following the Mayor’s intervention, TBZ has assured city officials that it is treating the matter with urgency and will ensure affected farmers are not disadvantaged.

This comes just days after the official opening of the 2025 Tobacco Marketing Season on April 22, with prices announced between 40 cents and $5.20 per kilogram—figures many farmers were optimistic about prior to the setback.

Farmers now await immediate remedial action, hoping that the damage will not cost them their anticipated earnings.

TBZ has committed to resolving the issue and ensuring the rest of the season proceeds smoothly.

Tonse Alliance Charts Strategic Path Ahead of 2026 Elections — Nakachinda

Tonse Alliance Charts Strategic Path Ahead of 2026 Elections — Nakachinda

The Tonse Alliance has announced a renewed strategic focus as it gears up for the 2026 general elections, following a high-level Council of Leaders (COL) meeting held on Saturday, May 3, 2025. The meeting was described as cordial and constructive, aimed at positioning the Alliance as a credible alternative to the current government.

Secretary General of the Alliance, Honourable Raphael Nakachinda, confirmed in a communiqué that the leaders deliberated on various matters affecting the Alliance and the country. He stated that the goal was to foster unity, strengthen internal structures, and respond to the public’s growing demand for change.

“One of the main outcomes was the resolution to harmonise the Terms of Reference of the Tonse Alliance with the Rules of Engagement of the anchor party, the Patriotic Front,” Nakachinda said. “This will create operational clarity and unity of purpose among all member parties.”

In a move to boost voter participation, the Alliance resolved to encourage all eligible Zambians especially first-time voters to acquire National Registration Cards and register to vote. Nakachinda noted that this aligns with ongoing registration drives by the Electoral Commission of Zambia and the government.

“The active participation of citizens is central to our democratic mission,” he added. “We are committed to empowering Zambians to take part in shaping the future of the nation through the ballot box.”

On the issue of the Lumezi by-election, the Alliance condemned the move as politically driven and reiterated its support for detained Lumezi lawmaker, Hon. Munir Zulu. Nakachinda said the Alliance will intensify its electoral preparedness while also pursuing justice for Zulu.

“This by-election is unnecessary and only serves political interests,” Nakachinda said. “We are committed to both contesting the seat and securing the freedom of Hon. Zulu, in partnership with other opposition forces.”

The meeting also emphasized the need for message discipline within the Alliance. Going forward, all public statements from Alliance representatives will require clearance from the Office of the Secretary General.

Nakachinda explained, “This is a vital step to prevent miscommunication, maintain consistency, and reinforce public confidence in our collective leadership.”

The Tonse Alliance has pledged to continue aligning its operations and policies to meet the aspirations of the Zambian people. The 2026 general elections are expected to be one of the most contested in Zambia’s recent history, with the opposition seeking to unseat the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).

As the election season intensifies, the Tonse Alliance’s ability to maintain unity, discipline, and strategic focus may determine its impact on Zambia’s political landscape. The latest resolutions signal a serious attempt to build momentum and present a formidable front ahead of 2026.

HH HEADED FOR A LANDSLIDE WIN ON THE COPPERBELT IN 2026 – MATAMBO

HH HEADED FOR A LANDSLIDE WIN ON THE COPPERBELT IN 2026 – MATAMBO

COPPERBELT Minister Elisha Matambo has told News Diggers that UPND will win the 2026 general elections with a huge margin in the province because the party has delivered on the majority of its promises.

In an interview, Wednesday, Matambo said the people of the Copperbelt were ready to vote for President Hakainde Hichilema in the upcoming general elections because of what he had done.

“People have come to understand that this power deficit is not about President Hakainde. They have also come to understand that it has made Zambians have another alternative of electricity away from hydro, and people have come to appreciate that.“

Zambian Post 3 May 2025

UPND may not achieve 50% + 1 in 2026 – Simutanyi

UPND may not achieve 50% + 1 in 2026 – Simutanyi

In a little over a year, the country will head to the polls to elect leaders who will govern the nation for the next five years. But whether the current leaders deserve re-election, despite many of their past promises still unmet, is a question best left to the voters.

Still, Neo Simutanyi, former Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Centre for Policy Dialogue and a seasoned political analyst, argues that UPND is unlikely to secure the 50 per cent plus one threshold in 2026. He argues that UPND’s major mistake is assuming that former president Edgar Lungu was the ruling party’s primary obstacle, and disqualifying him through the courts.

PF Ramps Up Mobilization in Matero Ahead of 2026 General Elections

PF Ramps Up Mobilization in Matero Ahead of 2026 General Elections

Lusaka Sunday, May 4, 2025

In a show of unity and renewed vigor, the Patriotic Front (PF) leadership in Matero Constituency held a major mobilization meeting on Saturday, aimed at preparing the grassroots for the upcoming 2026 general elections. The event, which took place at the PF Secretariat in Matero, was organized by the constituency’s party leadership in partnership with aspiring parliamentary candidate, Hon. David Kakoma.

The mobilization gathering brought together party members and officials from ward to constituency level, reflecting the party’s commitment to rebuilding its structures and strengthening its support base.

Speaking at the event, constituency leaders encouraged members particularly the youth and first-time voters to acquire their National Registration Cards (NRCs) and register to vote in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

Hon. David Kakoma, who has expressed interest in standing as PF’s parliamentary candidate for Matero in 2026, used the platform to deliver a strong message of party unity and forward-looking vision. He emphasized the importance of early preparation, grassroots engagement, and mass voter registration as key strategies in reclaiming Matero and reinforcing PF’s national presence.

“Our focus is on rebuilding from the ground up,” said Kakoma.

“The strength of any political movement lies in its people. That is why we are urging every eligible citizen in Matero to get their NRCs and register to vote. We must be ready, and we must be organized.”

Hon. Kakoma also reaffirmed his support for former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who has been declared the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections. He praised President Lungu’s leadership and legacy, pledging to mobilize maximum support for his presidential bid in Matero and beyond.

“The people of Matero know President Lungu’s leadership. They remember the development he brought and the policies that lifted lives. As a constituency, we are fully behind him, and we are ready to deliver a resounding victory,” he added.

Party leaders who addressed the gathering echoed Hon. Kakoma’s sentiments and highlighted the need for discipline, unity, and proactive engagement at all levels. They called on members to remain focused on the party’s vision and to counter misinformation through visibility and community outreach.

The event was marked by chants of solidarity, PF slogans, and renewed enthusiasm among attendees, many of whom expressed optimism about the party’s prospects in 2026. The PF in Matero has vowed to intensify its mobilization campaign in the coming months, including door-to-door outreach, community meetings, and youth-centered programs aimed at restoring confidence and trust in the party.

As the countdown to the 2026 general elections continues, the PF’s activities in Matero are seen as a litmus test for its broader national strategy. With a strong turnout and energized base, Saturday’s event signaled the party’s readiness to reassert its political presence and reconnect with the electorate.

Zambia Attracts Major Mining Investments as Sector Expands with Uranium, Copper, and Clean Energy Projects

Zambia Attracts Major Mining Investments as Sector Expands with Uranium, Copper, and Clean Energy Projects

Zambia’s mining sector is experiencing a surge in international interest and investment, as three major developments unfold, promising to bolster the country’s economic prospects and solidify its role in the global energy transition.

Namibia’s Swakop Uranium, one of Africa’s prominent uranium producers, is exploring a strategic partnership with Zambia to tap into the country’s untapped uranium reserves. In early April, the company’s Executive President, Mr. Irvine Simataa, led a delegation that met with Dr. Hapenga Kabeta, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development.

The meeting focused on potential Greenfield mining opportunities, with both parties expressing optimism about future collaboration. If successful, the partnership would unlock new investment streams and diversify Zambia’s mineral output beyond copper, signaling a significant step forward in nuclear energy development and clean power solutions.

Canadian mining giant Ivanhoe Mines has officially launched exploration activities in Zambia following a new agreement with the government. Known for its large-scale, sustainable mining operations across Africa, Ivanhoe aims to uncover new deposits of copper and other critical minerals essential for the clean energy economy.

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, announced the agreement during a tour of major mining sites in the Copperbelt. “This partnership represents a multi-billion-dollar opportunity for Zambia and reaffirms our commitment to becoming a hub for critical minerals,” Kabuswe stated.

Meanwhile, in Central Province’s Mumbwa District, Sinomine Kitumba Minerals has commenced operations on a $600 million open-pit copper mine. The project includes an integrated 50-megawatt solar power plant and is expected to create 2,500 jobs while producing 50,000 tonnes of refined copper annually.

“This launch brings us closer to our target of producing 3 million tonnes of copper annually by 2031,” said Minister Kabuswe during the inauguration. The project is anticipated to be a model for environmentally responsible mining, aligning with Zambia’s push for renewable energy in mining operations.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Media, Thabo Kawana, emphasized that mining remains a pillar of Zambia’s economy, contributing significantly to GDP, exports, and employment. He outlined key reforms including:

Enactment of the Mineral Regulation Commission Act. Introduction of the Geological Development Bill.

A nationwide aerial geological survey initiated in 2024 to boost investor confidence.

Additionally, over 250 gold and non-gold cooperatives have been licensed, and new mineral trading centers are under construction in Mumbwa and Rufunsa to support the growth of small-scale and artisanal mining.

With strategic partnerships forming, new mines launching, and reforms taking root, Zambia is positioning itself as a key player in Africa’s mining future. These developments underscore the country’s commitment to harnessing its mineral wealth sustainably, while attracting global investors eager to support the transition to a greener, more resilient global economy.

“From Taxation to Transformation – How Zambia Can Make Its Budget Work for the People”- George N. Mtonga

“From Taxation to Transformation – How Zambia Can Make Its Budget Work for the People”

By George N. Mtonga, MBA

Zambia’s budget has grown in recent years, with over 80% of it now funded by domestic taxes. This is, by all accounts, a milestone worth noting. It signals that Zambia is inching toward greater fiscal independence and away from external aid dependency. But beneath this surface of progress lies a deeper, more troubling reality—60% of our population remains trapped in poverty.

This contradiction poses a critical question: How can a nation collecting enough in taxes to fund its own budget still leave the majority of its citizens behind?

The answer lies not just in how much we collect, but how we spend it.

1. **Education: The Equalizer We Continue to Underfund**

If we are serious about breaking the cycle of poverty, education must be more than a line item—it must be a national priority. Zambia cannot afford to treat education as a privilege when it is the most powerful tool for social mobility and economic participation.

That means increased investment in teacher training, infrastructure, digital literacy, and vocational education tailored to the job market. It means ensuring that a child in Kalabo has the same quality of education as one in Lusaka. Without this, we are not building an equitable future—we are entrenching inequality.

2. **Healthcare: Productivity Begins with Well-being**

A nation cannot prosper if its citizens are too sick to work or too burdened by medical bills to save or invest. A healthy population is a productive population. More funding must go toward rural clinics, maternal care, mental health, and affordable medication. The COVID-19 pandemic reminded us that public health is not a luxury—it is national security.

When families spend less on treating preventable illnesses, they can invest more in their futures. Health is not a cost; it is a foundational investment in human capital.

3. **Private Enterprise: The Engine of Job Creation**

The government cannot hire everyone. Zambia must become a country where starting a business is not a privilege of the elite, but a pathway out of poverty for the average citizen. That means cutting red tape, improving access to credit, and investing in entrepreneurial training—especially for youth and women.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) account for over 70% of employment in many developing economies. If we are to grow our tax base *without* taxing the poor even more, we must support the very businesses that can absorb labor and stimulate local economies.

4. **Fiscal Policy with a Human Face**

Zambia’s budget should be a tool of justice, not just arithmetic. It must reflect the aspirations of a country trying to rise. That means allocating resources not based on political mileage, but based on measurable impact on poverty reduction. The wealth must *trickle down*, not by rhetoric, but by design.

This is not a call for populist spending or reckless subsidies. It is a call for *targeted, smart investments* that create a multiplier effect: an educated child today becomes a tax-paying entrepreneur tomorrow; a healthy farmer today grows into a local supplier tomorrow.

5. **Accountability and Efficiency**

Finally, none of this will matter if we continue to lose billions to corruption and mismanagement. The more efficient our institutions become, the more each tax kwacha can do. Public trust in taxation only grows when citizens see results that improve their lives.

Zambia is at a crossroads. We can continue collecting taxes and applauding the numbers, or we can align those resources with the real needs of our people. The choice is ours. Let us not mistake fiscal progress for economic justice. Until the 60% are part of the growth story, the budget is not truly working.

**Because progress isn’t just about raising revenue—it’s about raising people.**

THE BETRAYAL OF MILES SAMPA: MAY 1, 2025, MARKS THE  END OF A POLITICAL CAREER

THE BETRAYAL OF MILES SAMPA: MAY 1, 2025, MARKS THE  END OF A POLITICAL CAREER

By Timmy

In a striking parallel to the biblical story of Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus Christ, Miles Sampa’s recent decision to hand over the Patriotic Front (PF) party presidency to Edgar Chagwa Lungu (ECL) on May 1, 2025, at the PF Secretariat in Lusaka, may prove to be a fatal blow to his political career. While some might see this move as a gesture of goodwill, it is crucial for Sampa to understand the true implications of his actions.

As news of the handover spread, many PF party members celebrated, showering Sampa with praise, hugs, and kisses. However, these displays of affection are nothing but crocodile tears. Behind the façade of gratitude lies a different reality—one where Sampa’s political fate is all but sealed.

The Writing on the Wall

Sampa must wake up to the harsh truth: the same individuals who are currently celebrating his decision are the ones who will ultimately bring about his downfall. The actions he has taken, particularly handing over power back to ECL, will not earn him favor within the party. Instead, it will be seen as a betrayal, signaling that his services are no longer needed.

A Lesson from History

The story of Jesus Christ and Judas Iscariot serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of betrayal. Judas, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, betrayed him with a kiss, sealing his fate. Similarly, Sampa’s handover of power, though celebrated by some, marks the beginning of the end for his political career.

The End of an Era

May 1, 2025, will be remembered as the day Miles Sampa self-sabotaged his political future. The praise and accolades he received are not signs of love or appreciation but rather indicators of his impending doom within the party. Sampa must recognize that his actions have consequences and that his time in the PF is drawing to a close.

A Harsh Reality

Sampa’s decision to step down and hand over power to ECL will not be forgiven or forgotten. The PF party members who are celebrating his move are merely biding their time, waiting for the perfect moment to ensure that Sampa pays for what he has done. The end of his political career is near, and there’s little he can do to alter this course.

Miles Sampa’s political career effectively ended on May 1, 2025. The betrayal he has committed against the PF will not be overlooked, and his fate will serve as a cautionary tale for those who would seek to follow in his footsteps experciary people like chambinga they are next on the pf plan B list.
