NAMIBIAN MINISTER RESIGNS FOLLOWING ARREST AND SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS

NAMIBIAN MINISTER RESIGNS FOLLOWING ARREST AND SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS

By: The Namibian

Nambian Minister of agriculture, fisheries, water and land reform Mac Hengari has resigned from his position.

This follows rape allegations involving a 21-year-old woman, and his arrest.

Hengari early on Sunday confirmed to The Namibian that he had stepped down.

“I resigned as minister, but l cannot comment further,” he said.

Hengari’s resignation follows allegations that he raped the woman when she was still a minor.

National police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi on Saturday confirmed Hengari’s arrest, following an alleged attempt to bribe the woman to withdraw the case she opened against him last year.

“Hengari is indeed arrested after he attempted to bribe the victim to withdraw the case. That is what he was arrested for.

“That’s all I have for now,” she said.

The matter is currently under police investigation.

Police inspector general Joseph Shikongo this week confirmed that DNA samples were collected from both Hengari and the alleged victim for testing.

Sources familiar with the case say the test results are still pending.

Hengari was appointed to the Cabinet in March after president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah included him among her top-eight parliamentary candidates.

Several allegations first surfaced earlier this month, prompting calls from political commentators such as Rui Tyitendi, for Hengari to step down pending investigations.

AN  URGENT APPEAL TO THE GOVERNMENT OF ZAMBIA

AN  URGENT APPEAL TO THE GOVERNMENT OF ZAMBIA

By Carol  Lyambai

Warmest greetings to the esteemed people of Zambia, including:

– *His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema, the visionary leader guiding our nation towards progress and prosperity.
– *Our revered Traditional Leaders, the custodians of our rich cultural heritage and wisdom.
– *The Honorable Ministers, entrusted with the responsibility of shaping our nation’s future.
– *The esteemed Members of parliament, representing the voices of the people.
– *The dedicated Councilors, working tirelessly to improve the lives of our communities.
– *Fellow young and old Zambians, the backbone of our nation.

As a concerned young female Zambian citizen, I am compelled to bring to light the pressing issue of student dropouts from colleges and universities due to financial challenges. This crisis not only affects individuals but also hampers our nation’s progress and development.

*THE IMPERATIVE NEED FOR PROFESSIONAL COURSE

Supporting students in professional courses is crucial for Zambia’s growth and development. Some of the key areas include:

– *Information Technology (IT): Driving innovation, digital transformation, and economic growth.
– *Healthcare: Improving healthcare outcomes, reducing mortality rates, and enhancing the well-being of our citizens.
– *Engineering: Building infrastructure, driving industrialization, and creating employment opportunities.
– *Agriculture: Enhancing food security, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and increasing agricultural productivity.
– *Business and Entrepreneurship: Fostering innovation, creating jobs, and stimulating economic growth.

*THE CAUSES OF DROPOUT

– Financial constraints: Many students struggle to pay tuition fees, leading to dropout.
– Limited access to scholarships and bursaries: Insufficient funding opportunities hinder students’ ability to pursue higher education.
– High tuition fees: The cost of education is a significant barrier to access.
– Family responsibilities: Some students have to balance academic pursuits with family obligations.

*THE CONSEQUENCES

– Loss of potential talent and skills: Dropouts result in a loss of skilled workforce, hindering national development.
– Increased poverty and unemployment: Without education, individuals are more likely to experience poverty and unemployment.
– Slowed economic growth: A lack of skilled workforce slows down economic growth and development.
– Brain drain: Talented individuals may seek opportunities abroad, leading to a brain drain.

*A CALL TO ACTIONS

We urge the government to prioritize education and support students in need. Some potential solutions include:

– Allocating CDF funds to support students in professional courses
– Increasing scholarships and bursaries
– Collaborating with the private sector for sponsorships
– Implementing flexible payment plans

Together, let’s empower Zambia’s youth and build a brighter future!

“CHIPANDULE” CRIMINALS NABBED.

APRIL 27, 2025 – Police in Lusaka have apprehended four dangerous criminals belonging to a gang known as “Chipandule,” which has been terrorising members of the community in Matero and surrounding areas.

An intelligence-led operation was conducted by police officers in Matero between 20:00 hours on April 26, 2025, and 05:00 hours on April 27, 2025. The operation targeted criminal groups commonly referred to as “junkies.”

During the operation, an 18-year-old gang member, in the process of being apprehended, attempted to escape by climbing onto a roof, despite several police warning shots. Unfortunately, he was struck by an errant bullet and sustained an abdominal wound.

Police officers immediately rushed him to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), where he is receiving medical treatment. His condition is reported to be stable.

The four suspects have been identified as Joseph Banda, alias “Josalase,” aged 23; Prosper Mbewe, aged 24; and two male juveniles, aged 18 and 15.

In addition, a 47-year-old woman, the mother of two of the suspects, has also been apprehended for aiding and abetting the gang members by hiding them from the police.

The suspects have been on the police wanted list for various offences related to aggravated robbery.

Meanwhile, patrols were extended to Chunga, George, Desai, Soweto, Kachele, Kizito, and Lilanda compounds, where an additional 41 suspected “junkies,” including two females, were apprehended.

All suspects are currently in police custody and will appear in court soon.

The Zambia Police Service wishes to thank the residents of Matero and surrounding areas for their continued cooperation and support in making our communities safer.

LIVINGSTONE YOUTHS RESOLVE TO RALLY BEHIND HH BUT TELLS OFF GREEDY SERVING MP’S, MAYOR’S, AND DC’S THAT COME 2026, IT’S “KU WIRE.”

LIVINGSTONE YOUTHS RESOLVE TO RALLY BEHIND HH BUT TELLS OFF GREEDY SERVING MP’S, MAYOR’S, AND DC’S THAT COME 2026, IT’S “KU WIRE.”

United Party for National Development National Youth Chairperson Gilbert Liswaniso says youths in Livingstone and other parts of the Southern Province have resolved and declared to solely support the candidacy of President Hakainde Hichilema in 2026.

Speaking at a youth rally held at Livingstone’s Maramba Stadium, Mr. Liswaniso explained that President Hichilema has done his best and performed beyond everyone’s expectations in all his promises pledged before the 2021 elections. He stated that the head of state’s resolute and exceptional leadership during the two years plus in which the country experienced drought, threatening its food security, has given hope to young people that he is the right man to lead the country moving forward.

He assured President Hichilema that youths in the tourist capital are behind him and will mobilize themselves so that he can win the upcoming elections. However, Mr. Liswaniso did not hesitate to take a swipe at some cabinet ministers, MPs, mayors, and others serving in key government positions for neglecting UPND foot soldiers.

He told the rally that some people whom President Hichilema appointed have become too greedy and unsupportive to the party and warned that they should start eating their last meals in government, as youths will show them the exit door.

Sesheke Member of Parliament Romeo Kang’ombe urged UPND members to continue rallying behind President HH and not follow the so-called fake and confused alliances like Tonse. Mr. Kang’ombe said that as part of the mobilization of the party, logistical issues will be put in place to ensure smooth and well-coordinated campaigns are done in the run-up to elections.

WAVE OF DEFECTIONS STRENGTHENS SOCIALIST PARTY IN KANYAMA

WAVE OF DEFECTIONS STRENGTHENS SOCIALIST PARTY IN KANYAMA

Lusaka… Saturday April 26, 2025 – The Socialist Party (SP) witnessed a surge in support during a mobilization meeting held in Kanyama Constituency earlier today, as a prominent delegation from the Nalikwanda-UPND group and several bus drivers from Lusaka City Market and Lumumba Bus Stations officially joined the party.

According to Kanyama Constituency Chairperson Brighton Bilumba, the group, led by Denny Kawanga, defected to the SP citing dissatisfaction with the UPND) government.

Mr Kawanga blamed the current administration for unfulfilled promises, worsening hunger, and rampant youth unemployment.

Meanwhile, Bilumba disclosed that Kawanga also hinted at the possibility of 313 more individuals preparing to switch allegiance to the Socialist Party.

He emphasized that all new members were being encouraged to undergo political education and training to fully integrate with the party’s ideology and strengthen the movement ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The defectors expressed eagerness to meet with the SP’s national leadership, including party president Dr. Fred M’membe and National Youth Chairman Kelvin Kaunda.

Mr Bilumba stated that the spirit of revolution was alive and growing, and that the call for justice, equity, and peace was resonating across Kanyama and beyond.

He concluded by asserting that socialism was the future of Zambia, with the Socialist Party and a united opposition firmly setting its sights on victory in the upcoming 2026 elections.

POLITICAL HISTORIAN WARNS TONSE ALLIANCE INSTABILITY COULD JEOPARDIZE 2026 POLL BID

POLITICAL HISTORIAN WARNS TONSE ALLIANCE INSTABILITY COULD JEOPARDIZE 2026 POLL BID

Historian Dr. Eustone Chiputa has cautioned that internal instability within the Tonse Alliance could threaten its ability to effectively participate in the 2026 general elections.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Dr. Chiputa has observed a growing trend of alliance members prioritizing personal political ambitions over collective goals, citing the increasing number of breakaway parties and rising mistrust among members, as key indicators that the alliance is struggling to maintain unity.

He has compared the Tonse Alliance to other coalitions like the United Kwacha Alliance -UKA, which has experienced similar factionalism, noting that many political players seem convinced that only their respective leaders can truly represent the alliance’s vision.

He has called on senior political figures, particularly those from the former ruling party, to take on the role of mediators and help rebuild cohesion within the alliance by fostering compromise and a shared sense of purpose.

Meanwhile, former Patriotic Front-PF Secretary-General Davies Mwila has offered a contrasting view, claiming the Tonse Alliance may actually serve as a lifeline for the embattled PF whose ongoing internal wrangles are unlikely to be resolved before the 2026 elections.

Shishuwa’s Poisoned Pen is a Clear Indication of a Scholar Turned Political Mercenary

Shishuwa’s Poisoned Pen is a Clear Indication of a Scholar Turned Political Mercenary

By Abuild Mubanga

There comes a time in every nation’s journey when its people must stand up to protect truth from propaganda, scholarship from political pollution, and hope from those determined to poison it.

Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa, once a respected academic voice, has sadly become nothing more than a hired pen for political losers, economic plunderers, and bitter elites desperate to return Zambia to the days of plunder and impunity.

His latest article, _“The fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it,”_ is a malicious distortion of Zambia’s political and economic reality, laced with bitterness, conjecture, and an obvious agenda to discredit a President who has chosen the difficult road of national reconstruction over populist deception.

To claim that Hakainde Hichilema “fooled” Zambians into believing he was a reformist is not just an insult to the President—it is an insult to the millions of voters who overwhelmingly chose him in 2021.

*These were not gullible fools; they were citizens tired of a corrupt regime that brought Zambia to its knees through theft, violence, and economic sabotage.*

HH did not rise by deceit—he rose on the promise of restoring dignity, cleaning the rot, and placing the country back on the path of economic sanity. And that is exactly what he has been doing.

Yes, the road has been tough. But governance is not a fairy tale—it is a complex balancing act, especially when you inherit a nation that was bleeding on every level. HH has worked to stabilize the currency, attract credible investment, restructure Zambia’s debt, restore rule of law, and ensure peace.

He has done this without violence, without censorship, and without the dictatorial tendencies that defined the PF government—yet Shishuwa dares to brand him a despot. What hypocrisy!

It is under HH that defamation of the president was repealed—a brave democratic step no previous government ever attempted. It is under HH that freedom of expression has flourished. It is under HH that no journalist has been killed, beaten, or hounded out of the country.

Political parties operate freely. Opposition leaders like Fred M’membe and Sean Tembo insult the President daily with zero consequences—and yet somehow, we are supposed to believe we are under dictatorship?

Shishuwa’s biggest crime is intellectual dishonesty. He deliberately overlooks the global economic realities—from the COVID-19 aftershock to the Ukraine-Russia war—and pretends HH’s government should have reversed all PF damage in under four years. That is not analysis. That is activism—paid activism with a bitter taste of sour grapes.

He cries about corruption, yet under HH, even UPND-aligned officials have been arrested, suspended, or investigated. That’s a break from the PF tradition where corrupt ministers were shielded by State House. The Anti-Corruption Commission is working, the FIC is unshackled, and the judiciary is freer than ever before.

But Shishuwa wants you to believe that nothing has changed—because in his world, change must mean his preferred tribe, friends, or class benefiting.

He dares speak of fear, yet it is PF that ran the country on fear. Remember gassing, hacked body parts, and markets burnt for political gain? Today, Zambia is calm. Markets are being rebuilt, schools are receiving desks, and CDF is empowering communities like never before.

The UPND government is building—not stealing—and that alone is a revolution in Zambia’s public service culture.

*The truth is this: Hichilema is not afraid of losing power—he is afraid of leaving Zambia in the same mess he found it in. And that fear is noble.*

He is not panicking—he is working. He is not desperate—he is deliberate. Deliberate in growing agriculture. Deliberate in stabilizing power generation. Deliberate in enhancing accountability. Deliberate in protecting democracy from both the PF vultures and pseudo-intellectuals like Shishuwa, who have sold their conscience to the highest bidder.

Dr. Sishuwa, if you have personal grief, take it up with God. Do not package political vendetta as academic critique. We know you. You never write about PF criminality, never question Edgar Lungu’s return, You only bark at HH because you know he will never use the state to shut you up—yet that freedom is exactly what proves he is not the dictator you paint him to be.

Zambia is not a failed state. It is a state recovering from failure. A failure authored by the very people Shishuwa defends. And Hakainde Hichilema is not the failure—he is the reformer. He is not the threat—he is the shield. He is not the panicked man—he is the adult in the room.

Zambians must ignore the Shishuwas of this world. They are not prophets. They are not patriots. They are polished mercenaries in academic robes.

Let them write their bile. Let HH continue to build. Because when the dust settles, history will not remember the bitter scribblers—it will remember the brave reformers.

And on that note, President Hakainde Hichilema will be remembered as the man who chose the harder path—and walked it with purpose.

How Can Magistrate Chibwili Demand to Be Excused From Munir Zulu’s Petition?

How Can Magistrate Chibwili Demand to Be Excused From Munir Zulu’s Petition?

Chibwili’s Plea to Escape Scrutiny Is an Admission of Guilt

Accountability Is Not Optional: Chibwili Must Answer for Zulu’s Jailing

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

It is both outrageous and absurd that Chief Resident Magistrate Davies Chibwili — the very man behind Munir Zulu’s controversial and questionable imprisonment — is now pleading to be removed from the Constitutional Court proceedings. How can a magistrate who presided over a matter riddled with allegations of illegality and constitutional violations suddenly claim innocence and demand to be “struck out” of a process that directly questions his own conduct?

Chibwili was no passive actor; he was the architect of Munir Zulu’s incarceration. It was under his authority and direction that Zulu was convicted and jailed, despite widespread concerns about bias, procedural irregularities, and a blatant disregard for the core principles of justice. Now, as the legitimacy of his actions is challenged, he seeks to distance himself from the consequences? It is an insult to the intelligence of the Zambian people.

Justice demands full transparency and accountability, especially from those entrusted with judicial power. Chibwili cannot hide behind the excuse of merely “performing a judicial function” when it is precisely his conduct during that function that is under intense scrutiny. If he genuinely believes his actions were lawful, fair, and impartial, he should welcome the opportunity to defend them before the Constitutional Court. His plea to be excused only deepens suspicion over the integrity of the entire process.

Equally troubling is the State’s simultaneous push to shield Chibwili by arguing that only the Attorney General should answer to Zulu’s petition. This maneuver exposes a dangerous alliance aimed at protecting those who abuse their judicial authority. If the judiciary is truly independent and confident in its processes, why scramble to prevent scrutiny?

The truth is undeniable: a magistrate cannot preside over a deeply questionable case, jail a sitting Member of Parliament on shaky grounds, and then disown personal responsibility when legally challenged. Davies Chibwili must face the very justice system he is sworn to uphold. To allow otherwise would set a dangerous precedent — one where judicial officers can trample on citizens’ rights with impunity and then hide behind technicalities when held to account.

This case is no longer just about Munir Zulu. It has evolved into a critical test of Zambia’s commitment to the rule of law, judicial accountability, and the protection of fundamental human rights. It raises the critical question: will Zambia allow those who wield state power — in the courts, in Parliament, or in the Executive — to act without fear of being held answerable when they cross the boundaries of legality?

Zambians are watching. They are awake, alert, and asking the hard questions. They will not be fooled by cowardly technicalities or legal gymnastics designed to protect those who betray their oath to deliver justice impartially and fearlessly.

Accountability is not optional. It is the very foundation of a functioning democracy. Davies Chibwili must not be excused. He must answer fully, openly, and without manipulation.

Justice must not only be done — it must be seen to be done.

MILUPI SAYS OPPOSITION ALLIANCES ‘A MIXTURE OF TOXIC INDIVIDUALS’

MILUPI SAYS OPPOSITION ALLIANCES ‘A MIXTURE OF TOXIC INDIVIDUALS’

Alliance for Democracy and Development (ADD) president Charles Milupi says opposition alliances are a mixture of toxic individuals with nothing to offer to Zambians.

Mr. Milupi, who is also Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, said in an interview yesterday that opposition alliances lack credibility and a vision for the country.

He said it is clear that the alliances are only driven by a desire to get into power and not to serve the people of Zambia.

“They are a mixture of toxic individuals with nothing in common apart from wanting to get into State House. I don’t think it is a good recipe for leadership,” Mr. Milupi said.

PAUL MOONGA RESIGNS FROM SOCIALIST PARTY, JOINS UPND CITING LACK OF LEADERSHIP IN OPPOSITION

PAUL MOONGA RESIGNS FROM SOCIALIST PARTY, JOINS UPND CITING LACK OF LEADERSHIP IN OPPOSITION

Lusaka, April 25 — Prominent Socialist Party (SP) member and former National Management Committee official Paul Moonga has resigned from the opposition party, citing lack of leadership within the opposition and applauding President Hakainde Hichilema’s governance particularly the decentralisation agenda, increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF), and free education policy.

Mr. Moonga made the announcement at the United Party for National Development (UPND) Anderson Kambela Mazoka Party Secretariat, where he was officially received by UPND Lusaka Provincial Chairperson Obvious Mwaliteta.

In his remarks, Mr. Moonga said his decision to join the UPND was based on both political and spiritual convictions and referenced Romans 13 from the Bible, stating, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.” He described his political shift as being “born again” into the UPND.

“This is a great day for me, April 25. I am being politically born again in the UPND. I’ve been involved in politics from the grassroots to the national level. I joined Fred M’membe’s Socialist Party hoping to add value, but it is run by a small clique with undemocratic tendencies,” Mr. Moonga charged.

He said the ruling party’s successes particularly the increase in CDF from K1.5 million to K36.1 million have brought visible development to the nation. He also highlighted the government’s free education policy and expansion of skills training facilities as key motivators for his defection.

Calling for a more constructive opposition, Mr. Moonga urged fellow political actors to provide checks and balances based on ideas rather than obstructionism.

And receiving Mr. Moonga, Mr. Mwaliteta praised the move, calling it a significant boost for UPND’s structures. “Today is a special day for Lusaka Province as we welcome a very renowned individual, Paul Moonga. We believe he will bring invaluable political experience to help grow the party from grassroots to national level,” he said.

Mr. Mwaliteta also reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting digital rights through newly enacted cyber laws, saying these are necessary to uphold moral standards and promote responsible online conduct. He further noted the government’s achievements in debt restructuring and restoring investor confidence.

He said the bar for the presidency has now been raised so high that opposition parties are struggling to find suitable candidates, attributing this to President Hichilema’s success in ending political violence and caderism.

The defection marks a significant political realignment, with Mr. Moonga calling on others from the Socialist Party and Tonse Alliance to follow suit for the sake of national unity and development.

“By working together, we’ll build the nation together,” Moonga declared.

Stand Up for Zambia! Say No to Undemocratic Constitutional Amendments- Socialist Party

Stand Up for Zambia! Say No to Undemocratic Constitutional Amendments.

Zambia, wake up! The clock is ticking toward the 2026 elections and behind closed doors, there are moves underway that could change the very soul of our nation, “our Constitution”. Are we going to stand by silently while our democratic foundation is quietly dismantled?

According to the Zambia Governance Foundation (2023), a significant number of citizens feel alienated from key governance and decision-making processes. That’s not democracy. That’s a red alert.

As the National Women’s League of the Socialist Party, we say a resounding NO! This isn’t just about legal jargon or distant politics, this is about the Zambia we are building together and it’s under threat right now. It’s about our future, our right to choose and our voice as a people.

The current government’s push to amend our Constitution, especially with elections around the corner, raises serious concerns. Let’s be clear, a Constitution is not a tool for political maneuvering, especially not on the eve of a national vote. It is the supreme law of the land, the guardian of our rights and freedoms. Changing it without genuine, widespread consultation is not only irresponsible, it is undemocratic.

As legal expert Mwenda (2018) rightly puts it, “Constitutions derive their legitimacy from the broad participation of the citizenry in their making and amendment.” So we must ask, where is our participation now?

One of the most alarming aspects is the suspicious timing. Why now, when we are just months away from casting our votes? It reeks of an attempt to rewrite the rules just before the final whistle. This move breeds deep distrust and undermines the very essence of democracy. As women, we often feel the brunt of broken systems first and we recognize this for what it is, a power grab dressed as reform.

History has shown us again and again that last minute constitutional changes often serve narrow political interests. As the Zambia Governance Foundation (2023) warns, “Excluding citizens from constitutional reforms risks producing outcomes that favor political elites rather than the nation as a whole.”

Consider the impact on our 2026 elections. Could these amendments pave the way for unfair practices, mute dissent or weaken independent institutions like the Electoral Commission? As political commentator Michael Ignatieff once said, “Constitutions are not meant to be changed like the weather.”

This is not about minor tweaks. It’s about core principles, our right to freely and fairly choose our leaders. If we allow these changes to go through unchallenged, what will stop future governments from doing the same?

We, the National Women’s League of the Socialist Party Zambia, stand united in our opposition to this clear attempt to manipulate our Constitution for short term political gain. We call on every Zambian, men, women, youths and elders to rise up and say NO to this assault on our democracy.

Here’s what we recommend:

1. Demand public hearings and open consultation on any constitutional changes.

2. Push for independent legal review of all proposed amendments.

3. Mobilize civil society and media to educate and inform the public.

4. Stay vigilant and vocal, don’t wait until the damage is done.

Do not be fooled by rushed justifications or sweet sounding speeches. This is about protecting our collective future, our right to vote and our democratic freedom.

Stand with us. Demand transparency. Make your voices heard. Our Constitution and our democracy are not up for sale or manipulation.

Let our collective NO be thunderous and unmistakable! For the love of Zambia, for the sake of our democracy and for the future we all deserve, we must reject these amendments now!

NAKACINDA FAILS TO TAKE FRESH PLEA IN SEDITION CASE

NAKACINDA FAILS TO TAKE FRESH PLEA IN SEDITION CASE

PF faction Secretary General Raphael Nakacinda yesterday failed to take fresh plea in the matter in which he is charged with sedition.

This follows after the court was informed that Nakacinda’s lawyers of Messrs. Makebi Zulu Advocates were undisposed. In this matter, Nakacinda is facing one count of seditious practices. It is alleged that Nakacinda, a former minister of water development and sanitation, on August 21, 2024, uttered seditious words:

“The UPND government is undertaking genocide against its own citizens. The government imported mealie-meal and maize contaminated with aflatoxins which caused the death of dogs and an uncertain number of Zambian citizens which is yet to be established,” when he featured on Millennium Radio.

He further says that the country needs cyber laws to clean up the cyber space of any illicit content.

Dr Mumba adds that every civilised nation in the world has cyber laws which protects them, emphasising that they are important for a country like Zambia.

FDD APPLAUDS FARMING SUCCESS URGES GOVERNMENT TO ADDRESS MISUSE OF PUBLIC FUNDS

THE Forum for Democracy and Development has hailed the 2024-2025 farming season as a game-changer for Zambia, citing impressive maize fields across various parts of the country.

FDD Chairperson for International Relations, Anthony Chibuye, expressed admiration for the country’s agricultural progress, particularly in Luapula, Northern, Central, and Copperbelt provinces.

Mr. Chibuye attributed the success to the hard work and resilience of Zambian farmers, emphasising that consistent high production in the agricultural sector would significantly boost the country’s Gross Domestic Product.

However, he cautioned the government against allowing excessive maize exports, warning that this could compromise national food security.

Meanwhile, Mr. Chibuye criticized the government’s use of the Constituency Development Fund, alleging that funds were being misused for personal gain rather than for productive purposes. He urged the UPND administration to revise CDF guidelines to prioritise investments in productive sectors such as agriculture.

Mr. Chibuye also condemned the alleged abuse of government resources under the cash-for-work program, citing reports of fake names being paid for work that was never carried out. He stressed the need for greater transparency and accountability in public spending, warning that such practices undermine the country’s efforts to combat corruption.

UPND’s Popularity in Barotseland reduces further, Claims Western Province PF’s Bright Kufuka

UPND’s Popularity in Barotseland reduces further, Claims Western Province PF’s Bright Kufuka

By Barotseland Watchdog

Western Province Patriotic Front (PF) Chairperson Bright Kufuka has declared that the United Party for National Development (UPND) has suffered a significant loss of popularity in Barotseland, also known as Western Province.

According to Kufuka, the decline is attributed to the UPND’s lack of political will to bring meaningful development to the region.

Kufuka revealed that the PF, in collaboration with the Tonse Alliance, is intensifying its efforts to mobilize and penetrate Western Province.

He said the goal is to build on the development agenda initiated by the PF, which, according to Kufuka, has been lacking under the current UPND administration.

“The UPND has failed to deliver tangible development projects to the people of Western Province, beyond completing some infrastructure projects that our party started,” Kufuka claimed.

“We are confident that our development agenda will resonate with the people of Barotseland once again. We are not happy with substandard work our friends are doing like 1X3 classrooms they are building.”

Kufuka expressed disappointment that the UPND has not fulfilled its promises to the people of Barotseland, particularly regarding the completion of King Lewanika University and the upgrade of Lewanika General Hospital.

“We had hoped that the UPND would honor the people of Barotseland by completing these projects, given their long-standing support for the party,” Kufuka said. “However, it seems that the UPND is not committed to delivering on its promises.”

Kufuka emphasized that the PF/Tonse Alliance will prioritize the completion of King Lewanika University and the upgrade of Lewanika General Hospital once they return to power.

“These projects will be among our top priorities, and we will ensure that they are completed to benefit the people of Barotseland,” Kufuka stated.

The PF’s renewed focus on Western Province could have significant implications for the 2026 general elections. With the UPND’s popularity waning, the PF may see an opportunity to regain lost ground in a region that has historically been a stronghold for various political parties.

Vedanta is considering New York as one of the options to list KCM, as the Zambian unit is known, the sources said.

They said the discussions were at an early stage and a timeline had yet to be finalised.

Vedanta Resources, is considering a US public listing for its Zambian unit Konkola Copper Mines as one of its options to try to raise about $1-billion for mine development, three sources familiar with the details, told Reuters.

The miner, owned by Indian billionaire Anil Agarwal, has hired Barclays and Citigroup to advise on the plans for an initial public offering, said the sources, who declined to be named due to sensitivity around the discussions.

DEFENCE PERMANENT SECRETARY COMMENDS ZAMBIA NATIONAL SERVICE

DEFENCE PERMANENT SECRETARY COMMENDS ZAMBIA NATIONAL SERVICE

LUSAKA, Zambia, Saturday 26th April, 2025
Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Mr. Maambo Haamaundu has commended the Zambia National Service (ZNS) for the role it has played in stabilising the supply of mealie meal on the market.

Mr. Haamaundu says ZNS’s decision to offload its Eagle Mealie Meal on the market has helped keep the price in check and make it available to the common Zambian.

Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on the ZNS Commander Lieutenant General (Eng) Maliti Solochi II in Lusaka, Mr. Haamaundu said if ZNS didn’t participate in the supply of mealie meal, the price of food would have gone up.

“If ZNS was not in the maize business, the price of mealie meal would have not been in the reasonable range. Your involvement has kept the price of mealie meal in check,” said Mr. Haamaundu.

The Permanent Secretary also commended the Zambia National Service for setting up milling plants in Choma, Mpika and Lusaka.

He said the investment in milling plants is a forward-thinking plan which should be encouraged because ZNS is now involved in various stages of the maize value chain.

Mr. Haamaundu urged the ZNS to invest more in storage facilities to avoid wastage of harvested crops.

And the Zambia National Service Commander Lt Gen (Eng) Solochi thanked government for supporting the transformation of the service.

Lt Gen Solochi said ZNS has grown with the opening of new directorates and units which cater for all avenues of life such as research, agriculture, health, infrastructure development and many others.

“Since government changed the position from ZNS Commandant to ZNS Commander, we have developed the Zambia National Service in all spheres. At first, we were only limited to one discipline because a Commandant has a particular field but now we are operating in various disciplines,” said Lt Gen Solochi.

He asked for the Ministry of Defence to continue supporting the ZNS as it plays its developmental and security roles in the country.

Unjust Dismissal: A Blatant Attack on Zambia’s Public Workers

Mr. Paul Kasonde’s Unjust Dismissal: A Blatant Attack on Zambia’s Public Workers

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

I read the news from News Diggers with a heavy heart, but more than that, with anger and disbelief. What has become of Zambia’s public service? How has it come to this — where the very core principles that should guide public servants, such as fairness, professionalism, and adherence to procedures, are so recklessly discarded for political expediency?

The story of Paul Kasonde, former Manager for Aviation Security (AVSEC) at Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL), is a glaring example of the erosion of justice in Zambia. Kasonde, who has now filed a lawsuit seeking damages for unfair dismissal, was fired for performing his duties in full compliance with the law. His “crime”? Clearing former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s departure at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) without subjecting him to full security screening.

What is particularly outrageous here is the fact that VIP facilitation procedures, which are clearly outlined and universally known, exempt former presidents from routine security checks. This is not some vague, open-ended guideline — it is a well-established and respected protocol followed in countries that understand the importance of honoring former leaders. In Zambia, this should have been no different. Yet, here we are, watching as a dedicated and law-abiding public servant is ruthlessly punished for following the very procedures that he was hired to enforce.

The question must be asked: Why was Mr. Kasonde fired for doing his job? Why should a professional, simply carrying out his duties with integrity, be stripped of his livelihood? Was this really about security? Or is this yet another political attack aimed at punishing anyone, regardless of their professional conduct, who is even remotely associated with Edgar Lungu?

This is not just about one man’s wrongful dismissal. It is a wake-up call to every civil servant in Zambia: Your career, your future, can be obliterated not because you’ve broken any law, but simply because of the political affiliations of the person you happen to serve at any given moment. Is this the Zambia we are building? A country where loyalty to political parties trumps adherence to laws, regulations, and the principles of justice?

The sad reality is that we are creating a climate where public workers are not safe — where doing your job, following the law, and maintaining professional standards are no longer enough to protect you from political retribution. If this continues, Zambia will become a society where public servants live in constant fear of losing their jobs simply for carrying out their professional responsibilities in line with established procedures. Is this the kind of country we want?

Today, it is Paul Kasonde. Tomorrow, it could be anyone — any dedicated public servant who dares to do their job with honesty, integrity, and professionalism. Where does it end?

The injustice done to Mr. Kasonde is not just a personal betrayal. It is an outright assault on the very integrity of Zambia’s public service. We cannot, under any circumstances, allow the weaponisation of state institutions for political score-settling and vendettas. If we do, we destroy the very foundation of our democracy. The rule of law, fairness, professionalism, and the protection of civil servants’ rights must be at the heart of any truly democratic society. The politicisation of public service undermines the trust the Zambian people have in their own government, and that is a danger we cannot afford.

As I reflect on this, my frustration grows. We are not simply witnessing the victimisation of one individual, but the beginning of a deeply worrying trend. We are allowing public servants to be punished for doing their jobs — for following procedures — and for serving the country, even when those they serve are politically unpopular. This is a violation of justice that we cannot — and should not — tolerate.

Paul Kasonde deserves to be reinstated. He deserves justice, not only for himself but for every public worker who has the misfortune of working in a climate of fear and political persecution. But even more than that, Zambia deserves better. We deserve a public service that is insulated from political manipulation — where merit, integrity, and professionalism reign supreme.

We must not allow intimidation and political retaliation to replace fairness, integrity, and service. Public servants should not have to fear for their jobs when they are doing their duty in accordance with the law. If we allow this kind of victimisation to continue, we are sentencing our public service to a future of fear, dysfunction, and corruption.

This is a call to action — for Mr. Kasonde, for all civil servants, and for Zambia. We must stand up for the rights of our public workers, demand justice, and protect the integrity of our institutions. The future of our nation depends on it.

Pope Francis buried at Santa Maria Maggiore in historic break from tradition

Pope Francis buried at Santa Maria Maggiore in historic break from tradition

Pope Francis was laid to rest today in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, departing from centuries of Vatican tradition that saw his predecessors interred in St. Peter’s Basilica.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who died on April 21, chose the site out of personal devotion to the Virgin Mary and as a reflection of his lifelong commitment to humility.

The funeral, held earlier in St. Peter’s Square, drew thousands of mourners from around the world, including heads of state, clergy, and the faithful. Following the ceremony, his remains were transported to Santa Maria Maggiore, where he was buried near the icon of Salus Populi Romani a symbol he visited more than 100 times during his papacy.

“His decision to be buried here speaks to his profound Marian devotion and his desire to remain close to the people,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, said during the burial rites.

The tomb, as requested in the pope’s will, is modest, underscoring the simplicity that defined his 12-year leadership of the Catholic Church.

Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome’s largest Marian basilica, dates back to the 5th century and houses some of the Church’s most revered relics. Pope Francis’s burial is expected to turn the basilica into an enduring site of pilgrimage, further solidifying his legacy as a pontiff who favored accessibility over grandeur.

As Catholics worldwide mourn a pope known for championing the marginalized and calling for unity, the Church now turns its attention to the upcoming conclave, expected to begin in the coming days.

American pastor Josh Sullivan returns to the US after harrowing kidnapping and rescue in South Africa

American pastor Josh Sullivan, who was kidnapped at gunpoint during a church service in Motherwell, Gqeberha, South Africa on April 10, 2025, has safely returned to the United States after a dramatic rescue.

Sullivan, 45, a missionary from Tennessee, USA was freed on April 15 in Gqeberha following a “high-intensity shootout” where South African police, led by the Hawks unit, killed three of his captors.

Sullivan was found unharmed in a vehicle at a safe house and has since expressed gratitude for his survival, attributing his strength to his “personal relationship with Jesus” and the prayers of people worldwide. He described the experience as the “worst” of his life but is now focused on healing, asking for privacy as he reunites with his wife, Meagan, and their children.

The US Embassy commended the South African authorities for their rapid and coordinated efforts in the rescue operation. The rescue team, which included specialized police units, was able to locate the safe house in a matter of days after Sullivan’s abduction, responding quickly to leads that led to the suspects’ hideout.

Three captors were killed during the operation, and several others are under investigation.

Sullivan, who moved to South Africa in 2018 to establish a church for Xhosa-speaking communities, plans to eventually share his “miraculous” story. He expressed deep gratitude for the support he received during his ordeal and hopes to continue his missionary work when he feels ready.

South Africa and Tanzania strengthen ties as agricultural import ban is lifted

South Africa and Tanzania strengthen ties as agricultural import ban is lifted

Tanzania has lifted its import ban on South African agricultural products, marking a significant step in enhancing trade between the two nations.

Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, hailed the decision as a victory for diplomatic efforts and a boost for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The move follows months of negotiations to resolve trade barriers affecting South African exports like citrus and avocados.

The announcement coincides with Tanzania’s 61st anniversary of unification. Lamola called the agreement a win for both economies, opening new opportunities for South African farmers. Tanzania’s growing demand for quality produce offers valuable potential for exports.

Experts caution that continued investment in infrastructure and compliance with standards will be crucial for fully realizing the benefits.

KAMANGA SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT: FAZ PRESIDENCY NOT A FULL-TIME JOB AS HE EYES FINAL TERM COMPLETION

KAMANGA SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT: FAZ PRESIDENCY NOT A FULL-TIME JOB AS HE EYES FINAL TERM COMPLETION

IN a revealing and purpose-driven conversation on the Kenny T One on One Podcast, Football Association of Zambia President Andrew Kamanga shed light on what has truly defined his tenure vision, reform, and legacy-building. With the 2025 FAZ elective Annual General Meeting set for May 9 in Kabwe, Kamanga isn’t just seeking re-election he’s seeking to finish what he started.

Picture this: a man standing at the top of a structure he’s spent nearly a decade building laying brick by brick, policy by policy. Kamanga paints his journey not as one of personal glory, but as the architect of a football system designed to stand long after his presidency.

“It’s been an exciting journey,” Kamanga reflected. “Football has its challenges, but as president, I have always understood my role to provide vision and strategic oversight. Execution is the job of the secretariat, led by the General Secretary as CEO.”

DISMISSING MYTHS, DEFINING LEADERSHIP

There’s a common misconception that the FAZ presidency is a hands-on, full-time job. Kamanga demystified this notion with clarity: “Our job is strategic, just like a board chair in a company. Day-to-day operations are managed by the secretariat.”

It’s this non-executive, reform-centered approach that Kamanga says sets his leadership apart. From the get-go, he zeroed in on transforming governance structures beginning with the constitution itself.

“The first step was constitutional reform,” Kamanga noted. “We introduced provincial governance and empowered local structures to run their own AGMs. This decentralisation made FAZ truly national, not just Lusaka-centric.”

BUILDING FROM THE GROUND UP

If the first term was about laying the foundation, the second term, according to Kamanga, is “taking the structure up to roof level.” The vision? A self-sustaining, performance-driven FAZ.

From the grassroots to global stages, Kamanga recounted the journey with pride:

The resurrection of Chipolopolo, qualifying for two consecutive AFCON tournaments after a string of painful misses.

Zambia’s U20 Africa Cup triumph in 2017.

Reaching the quarterfinals of the FIFA U20 World Cup.

A flourishing women’s program culminating in a historic FIFA Women’s World Cup debut in 2023.

Ongoing hopes with the Copper Princesses eyeing another U17 World Cup qualification.

“Between 2016 and 2021, we focused heavily on grassroots football supporting clubs with grants and equipment. Today, Super League clubs are receiving over K1 million in support, compared to K200,000 before.”

LOOKING AHEAD: A LEGACY IN MOTION

With elections looming, Kamanga isn’t campaigning on promises he’s campaigning on progress. He urges FAZ councillors to help “complete the structure” and build a legacy of financial independence and continental glory.

Not one to rest on laurels, Kamanga also hinted at a post-FAZ project a book capturing the intersection of football and business, inspired by his experiences steering one of Africa’s most complex football institutions.

“This is about systems that last beyond personalities,” he said. “We must think beyond today. That’s how we build enduring success.”

As the sun sets on his second term, Kamanga’s story reads less like a politician’s pitch and more like a builder’s blueprint drawn in sweat, strategy, and the unwavering belief that Zambian football’s best days lie ahead.

COPPER PRINCESSES SEAL SECOND CONSECUTIVE FIFA U17 WOMEN’S WORLD CUP QUALIFICATION  IN STYLE

COPPER PRINCESSES SEAL SECOND CONSECUTIVE FIFA U17 WOMEN’S WORLD CUP QUALIFICATION  IN STYLE

The Zambia U17 Women’s National Team has booked their ticket to the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2025 after overpowering Benin 4-1 at Stade de Kégué in Lomé, Togo.

The Copper Princesses produced a fearless and dominant performance at a rainy Stade de Kégué to secure a 4-1 victory (6-2 aggregate) in the third round, return leg qualifier match.

Captain Mercy Chipasula was the star of the show early on, scoring twice inside the opening 10 minutes to stretch her goal tally to five goals in four qualifying matches.

Chipasula opened the scoring in the 4th minute, curling in a stunning goal directly from a corner that left Benin goalkeeper Larissa Saizonou with no chance.

Just four minutes later, she doubled the lead with a spectacular free-kick, similar to the one she scored in front of home supporters at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium in Ndola to put Zambia firmly in control of the tie.

Benin momentarily threatened a comeback when Ismath Kouta pulled one back in the 14th minute, reducing the scoreline to 2-1.

However, Carol Kanyemba’s lasses remained composed and continued to push forward while keeping their defensive shape led by Precious Mwape, Gift Chimba, Lweendo Hanongo and Faith Kaunda.

In the second half, substitute Victoria Mbali extended Zambia’s lead in the 80th minute after a brilliant setup by Ruth Mukoma. Moments later, roles reversed as Mbali turned provider for Mukoma, who fired home Zambia’s fourth goal in the 82nd minute to seal the win.

Benin’s hopes further dimmed after Deo-Gratias Ebi was sent off in the 74th minute following a second yellow card, leaving them a player short for the remainder of the match.

Coach Carol Kanyemba’s side showed maturity, tactical discipline, and attacking flair throughout the tie to send a strong message ahead of their second consecutive World Cup appearance, having made their first and Zambia’s second in 2024.

MWALE URGES MASS MOVEMENT TO UNSEAT UPND GOVERNMENT

MWALE URGES MASS MOVEMENT TO UNSEAT UPND GOVERNMENT

Lusaka… Saturday April 26, 2025 – Mr. Faston Mwale, the Deputy General Secretary for Political Affairs of the Socialist Party, has declared that the ruling UPND does not deserve a second term in office.

Mr. Mwale criticized the UPND for squandering its four years in power, contending that the party had failed to deliver on its promises of building a better Zambia.

According to Mr. Mwale, the UPND had not only failed to live up to its commitments but had also transformed into “an inept and corrupt group.”

He stated that Zambia was now facing alarmingly high poverty rates, with six out of every ten citizens living below the poverty line and nearly half of the population trapped in extreme poverty with little hope of improvement.

Mr. Mwale argued that the UPND government was facing a crisis of moral legitimacy, given the worsening material conditions experienced by the majority of the population.

He challenged the administration for persistent corruption, economic exploitation, political oppression, and the brutal suppression of constitutional freedoms, which he said had created fertile ground for the emergence of a mass political movement.

He further stated that the UPND was reacting to its own failures by enacting cyber laws aimed at criminalizing dissent and attempting to amend the constitution to consolidate its hold on power.

Mr. Mwale warned that these actions would only serve to galvanize opposition forces and lead to the formation of a strong, multi-faceted mass movement committed to restoring democracy, good governance, and civil liberties in Zambia.

Mr. Mwale called on all progressive forces—including opposition political parties, trade unions, student organizations, academics, businesspeople, civil society groups, traditional leaders, and religious institutions—to unite and mobilize for change.

He asserted that, despite the UPND’s efforts to suppress dissent, a united front for progressive social change was inevitable.

In conclusion, Mr. Mwale maintained that the UPND was a failed project incapable of addressing critical national challenges such as corruption, the high cost of living, load shedding, and soaring fuel prices.

He urged Zambians to unite and ensure that the UPND was voted out in the next general elections.

FIVE LUMEZI COUNCILLORS ENDORSE UPND CANDIDATE AND PRESIDENT HICHILEMA

FIVE LUMEZI COUNCILLORS ENDORSE UPND CANDIDATE AND PRESIDENT HICHILEMA

Five of the nine Patriotic Front (PF) councillors for Lumezi Constituency, including Lundazi Council Chairperson Emmanuel Miti, have pledged their support to the UPND candidate ahead of the forthcoming Lumezi Parliamentary by-election.

The councillors have also endorsed President Hakainde Hichilema ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Speaking during a press briefing held at Country 24 Lodge in Lundazi District, all the councillors cited the developmental policies of the UPND government aimed at uplifting rural communities and the lack of direction in their political party.

The Patriotic Front councillors who declared their support include Blaston Ngoma of Kamimba Ward, Alick Banda of Lumimba Ward, Fackson Sakala of Chibande Ward, Samuel Nkhoma of Kapangala Ward, and Emmanuel Miti, who is also Lundazi Council Chairperson.

Blaston Ngoma said he chose to support the UPND candidate because of the equal distribution of resources regardless of political affiliation.

He called on all opposition Members of Parliament to appreciate the good works of the UPND government.

Mr Ngoma added that President Hichilema has shown a genuine commitment to supporting the people of Eastern Province.

Emmanuel Miti from Kazembe Ward said he was pleased that President Hichilema introduced free education, allowing many children to return to school.

He also praised the positive impact of the Cash for Work Programme and the increased Social Cash Transfer.

Mr Miti highlighted the construction of the first-ever mini-hospital and new classroom blocks in the valley area by the New Dawn government.

Samuel Nkhoma, councillor for Kapangala Ward, revealed his total support for the ruling party, citing projects like the construction of health posts through Constituency Development Funds (CDF) and the free education policy.

Alick Banda of Lumimba Ward said the timely completion and quality of infrastructure projects influenced his decision to support the ruling party.

Eastern Province Minister Peter Phiri, who officially welcomed the councillors, expressed happiness over their support for the UPND.

Mr Phiri clarified that the councillors have not defected but are simply supporting the progressive works of President Hichilema and his government.

He emphasized that no well-meaning Zambian can ignore the benefits of free education introduced by the UPND government.

Mr Phiri, who also serves as Eastern Province UPND Chairperson, reiterated that President Hichilema loves and respects all citizens, including members of the opposition.

UPND denies hand in Tonse coup…..says SP should take responsibility in its nocturnal schemes

MEDIA STATEMENT

*UPND denies hand in Tonse coup…..says SP should take responsibility in its nocturnal schemes*

Saturday 26 April, 20025

THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has categorically dismissed allegations of destabilizing the opposition Socialist Party (SP), describing such as an attempt to clothe themselves after being caught pants down scheming to take over leadership of Tonse Alliance.

An audio has gone viral in which Akende M’membe, a senior member of the SP and also daughter of party owner Fred M’membe, and youth leader by the name of Kelvin were mooting to dislodge Tonse leader Edgar Lungu.

“The allegations are not only disingenuous but malicious and a plain vain attempt to drag us into their internal squabbles and schemes in which we absolutely have no interest. Ours is to serve the people to the best of our ability, having taken over a country whose economy was knocked to its knees by the Patriotic Front… It is the PF leadership and their collaborators who have converged on Tonse, trying to hoodwink Zambians once again,” Lusaka Province UPND chairman Obvious Mwaliteta said.

He said SP has failed to come clean on the schemes and has now resorted to scapegoating or at their regrettable best sucking in the ruling party.

The SP, he said, should just confess and seek forgiveness from their partners because the videos have exposed their evil plans, especially at a time the Tonse leader is receiving treatment in South Africa.

“That’s their own treachery hatched from their own factory. These diversionary tactics are old-school and fall short in a basic test of decency,” Mr Mwaliteta said.

He noted that the UPND cherishes an opposition that is fully and robustly involved in checks and balances and not one that is hellbent on a witch-hunt after being trapped in its own nocturnal schemes.

Mr Mwaliteta is proud that the UPND has stabilised the economy, improved governance and sanitised politics.

“The mines have been revived, Zambians are enjoying free education and the farmer is happier than ever before because of timely delivery of farming implements and inputs.

That’s our focus. We, therefore, are reluctant to engage SP whose ideologies, everyone knows, have been overtaken by time and are impracticable society,” he said.

He encouraged his party functionaries not to be distracted and Zambians not to be swayed by such naysaying zealots.

“Instead, join our leader and dear President Mr Hakainde Hichilema as he works day and night to bring Zambia to life once again. It may take a little long but a concrete foundation has been laid and it shall be well.

We urge all Zambians to support the President in every endeavour because he means well for us all,” Mr Mwaliteta said.

In Protection of Opposition Political Party Unity and a Defence of its accused members; a sad indictment against its own internal detractors- Muhabi Lungu

In Protection of Opposition Political Party Unity and a Defence of its accused members; a sad indictment against its own internal detractors.

By Muhabi Lungu

i. Opposition Unity an Absolute Necessity

While expressing their concerns on the proposed constitutional amendments, it was the three church mother bodies (the Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ), the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) and the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB), who introduced all of us to Psalms 133 verse 1, which proclaims… “Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in Unity” . This bold call and proclamation by our spiritual leaders was affirmed to the nation at the beginning of the Press Conference of 19th March 2025.

We, as a collective of opposition political parties and alliances, were specifically inspired to put aside our respective party agendas, stood up and rose to the identified challenge of pursuing a resolute stand against manipulation, oppression and injustice. A united front was birthed to stand tall against a planned usurpation of citizen’s powers, by an obstinate government, increasingly resentful of the very people that gave it an opportunity to govern.

The collective was inspired to ensure that matters of governance, particularly as it concerns the Constitution of the Republic, were done in a transparent and consensus based manner in which no single political party obtains an unfair advantage and malevolent leverage against the willful capacity of the governed.

No government should be allowed to put in place a system of supposedly ‘benign measures’, trickery intended to take away the fundamental right of Zambian citizens to legally change and throw out of office, its disrespectful governors. All effort must be made by every Zambian to ensure the protection of the inalienable right of a people to prevail against a deceitful and self-serving governing elite.

Since the referred to press conference, controversial governance issues, one after the other and like a ton of bricks, have been dropped on the heads of the Zambian people.  These have included the Cyber Security Act, the Cyber Crimes Act, the Media Regulations Bill as well as earlier issues on the disputed Census Report of 2022, and the “Creepy Friday the Thirteenth (13)” contentious proposed constitutional amendments.

It is against the backdrop of these circumstances, creating an existential crisis for the Republic that led to a consolidated resolve towards collective action by the opposition political parties. In this regard, all differences, perceived and real, between the TONSE and UKA alliances, The United National Independence Party (UNIP), the Socialist Party (SP), the People’s Alliance for Change, the Zambia We Want (ZWW) and other political players, had been put aside. This is a noble cause for which every member of the respective political parties should unreservedly support.

No matter what the odds of success maybe, we must ensure a spirited and unyielding defense of liberties and rights for the benefit of Zambian citizens and the future of its children. A cause which requires that individual self-interest and petty sibling type rivalries, such as those maliciously and falsely targeted at Raphael Nakachinda, Given Lubinda and Fred M’membe, be immediately vanquished and dismissed. This is absolutely important in order to prevent opportunistic  handlers from the UPND taking advantage of a contrived situation that they can fully exploit to their advantage and to our collective detriment. The stakes are simply too high to tolerate continued internal immature behavior.

ii. False Allegations of “Clandestine Meetings’ of treachery and betrayal.

In defense of the three colleagues mentioned above, I now reveal proceedings of an internal nature that should otherwise never be exposed to the public in such a brazen manner. However, I feel it a necessary slippery slop risk that must be taken in order for the public to fully understand what transpired. Due to my strong beliefs in upholding ethics, I take full personal responsibility if my colleagues wish to discipline me for such a breach of professional etiquette.

On Saturday 12th April, 2025 and as part of the regular meetings held by the opposition political parties, a specific agenda itemed meeting was hosted at a Residence of a Zambia We Want National Leadership Council (NLC) member. In attendance, were the following:

1. Bishop Trevor Mwamba
2. Sakwiba Sikota (SC)
3. Given Lubinda
4. Harry Kalaba

The first point to note is that, this was a meeting of a united front of opposition political parties rather than that of TONSE or UKA alliances. This is the reason I deliberately gave where the meeting was hosted. Regardless of these known facts, certain mischievous individuals deliberately described the gathering as an UKA meeting at which TONSE was supposedly “being sold to UKA.” In order to support this false narrative, social media and certain identified Facebook pages, untruthfully indicated that some of the individuals in the picture were “unknown people.” These unknown people obviously included Fred M’membe, Trevor Mwamba, myself and others, who did not belong to either of the two alliances and who were quite visible in the said shared pictures.

The second point to make is that all participants made it very clear that that members in attendance were in the meeting with the full approval of their respective political parties and supported by the respective heads of those institutions.

This confirmation was necessary due to the fact that the previous joint press conference, on an important matter of the constitution, was nearly sabotaged by the unfortunate circulation of an advert, done by the opposition parties, but disrespectfully mutilated by known individuals, as FAKE. A legal threat towards court action was additionally communicated to the collective “if the TONSE Logo was not removed from the advert.”

This incident took all of us by surprise and subsequently had to involve all the heads of the various political parties in order for the Press Conference to proceed. After this unfortunate event, it had become a necessary requirement for members to assure each other that meetings were held  within acceptable approval processes of the respective institutions. Meanwhile and for the sake of continued unity, it was decided to cast a blind eye and ignore the exhibited irresponsible behavior of saboteurs towards its second press conference; for whatever their reasons may have been.

The third point to share is that one of the items on the agenda for the 12th April meeting, was a discussion towards the possibility of presenting a single candidate by all the opposition political parties with respect to the recently declared vacant seat of Lumezi. The proposed joint effort towards a greater consideration for Lumezi was due to the undeniable recognition that the primary objective by the UPND government, in nullifying the seat, was to increase their parliamentary numbers so as to support their constitutional agenda; hence the need to ensure the prevention of such insidious maneuvers through a defeat of the governing party when the bye-election is held.
After a progressive discussion, it was decided that another meeting, Chaired by UNIP’s Bishop Mwamba and  comprising of the Citizens First (CF), the PF/TONSE and the SP (parties that had recently participated in the by-elections)  be convened at which further possible progress could be made. Subsequently, and after consideration by the respective party executive committees, the matter would be re-tabled at an all opposition political parties meeting.

It is at the subsequent Troika meeting, which took place on Tuesday 22nd April 2025 that PF Secretary General Raphael Nakachinda and PF Vice President and acting President Given Lubinda were accused as “attending a clandestine meeting” and of betrayal to the Socialist Party. This meeting deliberated on a very important matter, which has previously been a thorn towards a consolidated working arrangement by the opposition; some encouraging progress was made.

Given the above circumstances, it is not at all surprising that the day after this achieved milestone, both UKA and TONSE received internal blows attempting to destabilize their existence. It is not hard to understand, why a leaked audio of an alleged private discussion was being used to implicate those who were not a party to the discussion. It is not a surprise that the Socialist Party was targeted as the villain, shortly after it wrote letters to various political parties, including the Zambia We want, UKA and Tonse, proposing a deeper working arrangement for a larger group of opposition political parties.

The fact is that none of the three individuals that have been mischievously charged, were anywhere near the leaked audio.  The audio, purported to be the primary evidence of treachery, does not incriminate any of the charged officers. It is also an established fact that all the meetings referred to by the various social media postings were sanctioned gatherings by the Heads of the respective institutions.  Sanctioned meetings, being held openly and attended by senior members of political parties cannot be categorized as clandestine.

iii. Conclusion

The narration as indicated above is a truthful account of events I have myself participated in. Accordingly, the process reveals sanctioned meetings that were held with the full approvals of all the respective Party and Alliance Heads. The primary objective was to consolidate effective working arrangements for the opposition political parties that are unrelated to any leadership contest.  In this regard, sufficient material evidence exists for the outright dismissal of any impropriety on the part of Raphael Nakachinda, Given Lubinda and Fred M’membe; provided that concerned individuals are interested in a truthful engagement.

As a realist, however, I do take cognizant of the fact that there are differing points of view and strategic objectives as well as undesirable agendas in each of our respective political parties. Within all our institutions, are those who firmly believe in opposition unity, are those who frown upon it with disdain, are those who wish to hijack the process for their own personal ambitions and are those tasked with infiltration and sabotage. All of us are fully alive to these realities.

We have to understand the difficulties of navigating these complexities and accept that the UPND, using government machinery, will do everything possible to ensure that opposition unity does not occur. If they succeed, it will be because certain elements within the opposition do not have the maturity, patience and fortitude to place and subordinate their personal interests to that of the whole. A successful outcome of creating instability and disunity in the opposition can only be to the advantage of the UPND; the sure winner can only be HH. The rest of us can only be losers. This would be a tragic outcome for Zambia; a crime unforgivable.

Let me end by quoting the Sixth Republican President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu in his statement issued earlier today and indicate that his words, I respectfully adopt as my own… “To all members of the opposition, let this be a call to stand together, not in competition, but in service to our greater nation. When we respect each other, listen to each other, and stand side by side, we become the change our people are yearning for”.

OPPOSITION UNITY WILL END HICHILEMA’s RULE- Fred M’membe

OPPOSITION UNITY WILL END HICHILEMA’s RULE, REECHOES SOCIALIST LEADER

Lusaka… Friday April 25, 2025 – Socialist Party (SP) President Dr. Fred M’membe has declared that removing President Hakainde Hichilema from power in next year’s elections is essential for the country’s progress.

Dr. M’membe has said the UPND is aware that a significant electoral defeat was looming, contending that the government was panicking and attempting to undermine the growing unity among opposition parties.

He suggested that the ruling party was trying to spread the narrative that opposition forces were too fragmented to pose a serious challenge—an assertion he dismissed as false and self-deceptive.

He emphasized that the opposition’s strength lies in the support of the millions of frustrated and disappointed citizens who are yearning for change.

According to him, this popular discontent would pave the way for a new government rooted in unity, vision, democracy, and inclusivity.

In a statement, Dr. M’membe stated that opposition parties were committed to forming alliances with all progressive forces until President Hichilema is unseated.

He expressed confidence in the electorate’s understanding of their voting power and said that any attempt by the ruling party to manipulate the outcome—as he alleged was done previously—would be futile.

Furthermore, Dr. M’membe warned the UPND that no amount of propaganda or political intimidation would be enough to sway the people, asserting that the population is now awake and ready for change.

He concluded with a bold declaration, that the time for the current government had already passed, and that, ultimately, the people would prevail.

Alliances that resort to open squabbles, public fights, and attacks on each other are bound to fail- Dr Nevers Mumba

Dr Nevers Mumba writes….

OUR COMMENT UNITY AND CONDUCT WITHIN POLITICAL ALLIANCES.

We believe that political alliances must handle internal conflicts with decency and maturity. Alliances that resort to open squabbles, public fights, and attacks on each other are bound to fail.

Constructive disagreement and respectful dialogue are essential for success. If we desire to govern, let us prioritize the Zambian interest over our narrow partisan or individual interests and work together with integrity.

Any alliance that ignores these principles will end up destroying and vandalising their own chances of political success,  and are no different from those soccer fans who vandalize and destroy their own stadium.

JOURNALISTS OPPOSE ZIJ BILL… describe it as ‘Brought In Dead(BID)

JOURNALISTS OPPOSE ZIJ BILL

… describe it as ‘Brought In Dead(BID)

By Ludia Phiri Ngwadzai

SELF Regulation Council of Zambia, says the Zambia Institute of Journalism Bill must not be supported as it does not mean well for the fraternity.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka , Thursday,Jessie Bwalya, Self Regulation Council of Zambia Committee Member, has described the bill as ‘brought in dead’ noting its selfish motive to the profession.

Ms. Bwalya added that the bill is meant to gag Media freedom and expression, hence the need not to sign it into law.

Speaking earlier, Charity Mtonga , a journalist, expressed gratitude that journalists are in support of the self- regulation which they have subscribed to.

And Media Institute for Southern Africa(MISA) Zambia Chairperson, Lauren Chisanga emphasized that the country has enough laws to regulate and support the media profession.

Ms. Chisanga has since reaffirmed continued commitment towards media self-regulation.
